i appreciate the animorphs intros so much. sometimes i'll be halfway through a book and straight-up forget a character's name - like, i know the main character had a best friend but i completely skimmed over the fact that their name was george. and then i'll read the name george and go, "george? who's that? when was there ever a george?"

i never do that with animorphs because at the start of every single book, without fail, they're like, "my name is jake, and that's cassie, and that's rachel, and that's marco and tobias and ax. here's our main personality traits and roles within the group. we can morph into animals and we're fighting a war against evil aliens, let's go."

i know it's mainly a recap for the kids waiting a month between releases and the kids who picked the books up out of order. but even going through the pdfs one after the other, it's helpful. you really reinforce who these kids are and how they perceive each other. and it's a nice grounding point for a series that often swings very quickly into wild, weird, and traumatic.

you know you're always gonna come back to, "my name is --. i can't tell you my last name."

i guess this also explains why i like the leverage intro so much, huh?

My bud here asked a very important question: why Tobias stole a very sacred and important book?

The short answer is: because Tobias has a curse and he wanted to find a cure.

OMG HOW- calm down, first things first.

As I said before, when Alex and Elisa started to take their relationship more seriously, Alex would hang out in the Colony using a shrinking potion and preteding to be an imp. He was well accepted as one by Elisa's fellow imps and fairies and they never had many problems with his disguise.

But there was this one, powerful, envy fairy who took notice that something about Alex was... off.

She started to do her own investigations and ended up finding the truth out: Alex was no imp, but a human in disguise. Although, to her, this was actually very good news.

Why? Because this fairy - Irwalia - comes from a family that has been preaching an ancient propecy over a century now. Said prophecy omens that, one day, a being with the strongest of souls - a fairy soul - and the strongest of bodies - a human body - would be born to free the Colony from it's decades of war.

There are a lot of fairy families that preach this prophecy till this day, but all of them are taken as delusionals by most of the Colony's inhabitants. It's impossible to have a being that has a different soul from it's body, it just can't happen. But they hold onto their beliefs firmly regardless.

When Irwalia learned the truth about Alex, she couldn't help but be ecstatic: she had finally found a human inside the Colony's walls. And, if SHE was the one who discovered him first, then she must be the one meant to give birth to this prophetic child… right?

In a vengeful and spiteful spirit, Irwalia decided to not report Alex to the Colony's authorities, but instead take her anger out on what the human and his imp wife treasured the most: their only child.

Alex and Elisa didn't took long to find Toby, afterall she wanted to take her revenge in front of them...

Irwalia cursed Toby with something that not only breaked Alex's heart, but made the child defenseless if he ever encountered a human: if in close proximity to a human, Toby is completely unable to do any kind of magic.

This may not sound like a big deal, but imps, especially imp borrowers, take great advantage from their magic abilities to protect themselves from the sight of humans and their malicious intents. And, of course, Toby would never be able to obtain his full magic potential (which he has a lot of) around his own father.

Aside from all that, his hair is now bright blue, a side effect of the curse that makes it difficult for him to hide from humans and dangerous animals.

Toby grew up not being allowed to leave the Colony EVER because of his curse. So when he became an adult, after getting involved in a lot of trouble inside the Colony, being the little thief and vagabond that he is, he thought-

Unfortunately, he never had the chance to actually seek a cure for his curse in the book because he was discovered for his theft before that, yeah, it was all kind of pointless, he truly sucks at hiding.

Huh, I also wonder why it worked...

Y/N watched as a teenage girl walked up to the microphone. She clearly looked nervous, as had many other people coming up, but Y/N tried to make her feel as at ease as possible.

“Um…hey Y/N, my name is Elodie, and I just wanted to say how much I love your writing…” - Elodie

James quietly shut the door, once Logan and Alex were through, and didn’t try and push through the crowded room, they instead settled for a spot near the back where they could still see Y/N. They were sure that if people recognised them, they would be shunted towards the front or ushered backstage. They didn’t want that, they just wanted to stay inconspicuous at the back.

“Aww thank you Elodie, what was your question?” Y/N smiled reassuringly

“Um…well, for your book, ‘a sweet sting of salt’, I was just wondering if you had any inspiration for the character Tobias. While he isn’t the best character in the story, you said he was one of your favourite characters to write, and I was just wondering why?” Eloise asked

“Oh, that is a good question, thank you Elodie. Um… while the actions are obviously not based on him, a lot of Tobias’ so-called ‘good’ elements are actually based on my husband. So…okay I’m gonna hope that everyone has read the book, so I don’t spoil it,” she smiled “Um, so for those of you who are unaware, my husband is James Vowles, and he is the Team Principal of Williams, which is a motorsport for those who are very out of the loop. So I guess the main words I would use to describe both Tobias and James, other than loving because Tobias is definitely not, are logical, quiet, grounded, organised and productive.”

James smiles, watching his wife talk about something she was so passionate about.

“So for example, for logical qualities for Tobias and James in chapter 10, Tobias uses deductive reasoning, which I would like to say is James’ strong suit, however he sometimes misuses it, like deducing who ate the chocolate, the wife or the dog. Tobias uses it for more evil, using it for working out how to do the things he does. Maybe they are more evil and similar and similar.” Y/N pondered, garnering a small laugh from the audience

James stopped smiling, as he listened to his wife compare him to a literal murderer in her book. Logan and Alex were standing next to him, trying to avoid their laughs.

“Then for quiet, in chapter 16, James likes sneaking around and scaring the shit out of me when he gets back from the factory and from races to scare the shit out of me, and Tobias uses it for murder. Huh, maybe these 2 characters are closer together than I thought.” Y/N pondered, laughing as she saw her husband’s face

“Darling, I’m not a thief and a murderer. I honestly don’t know why you based Tobias off of me.” James tried to mediate.

However it was enough for Alex and Logan to burst out laughing, joining in with the rest of the crowd, who had discovered that James was there and found it very funny.

“I’m just saying you share similar qualities, more than I initially insisted. Are you sure you didn’t secretly murder someone?” Y/N tilted her head, as if genuinely thinking about the question

“Darling…” James tried to plead again

“ANYWAY - Then for grounded, in chapter 18…” - Y/N, moved on, continuing with her ideas.

“And during this safety car period, Alex, our camera man has gone for a wander and he has gone down to the Williams garage, and while we’re normally looking at the team principal or other important people, we have instead zoomed in on Y/N Vowles. Now for those who don’t know, she is a writer, and she seems pretty hard at work at this book on her laptop. Now that will be good news for anyone who reads her books, including me, she writes very good books, available at all the awesome book stores, and no she hasn’t paid us for that, we just think her books are amazing. Oh and she waved at us. Hi Y/N!” - Jolyon said from the commentary box

James smiled at the sight of Y/N on his screen. While this weekend had been very stressful, it was very nice having his wife be there for him in the garage and then back at the hotel rooms, even after all the late meetings. He watched as she smiled and waved at the screen, and he was unable to resist the temptation as he smiled at the picture and waved back, earning another laugh from the commentators.

“...as long as it’s not when I’m having a baby, or where I live, it should be okay, hit me!”  Y/N tried to put him at ease.

“Your schedule for this book tour is a little all over the place, if you don’t mind me saying, it was basically like the first 2 months of the year, and now there’s just kinda weeks off or even months off, and I was just wondering if there was any sense to the schedule.” Leo shuffled awkwardly, unsure of how she would react to the question.

“Ah, well there actually is. First off, I cannot tour every week of the year, because I think I would just simply die. But the reason I picked those weeks off is because if my husband again. Are you guys sensing a pattern here? I love James, and I really want to support him at all the f1 races. So those are the weeks I took off, basically. And second, Baby Vowles is due in 6 months, thanks guys!” Y/N laughed as she put down the microphone and walked off stage, laughing as the cheers from the crowd grew louder.

just wondering if you have any thoughts -- what do you think an animorphs crossover with [heist movie of choice] would look like? I feel like the requirements of leadership would make marco the leader? which might fuck up their social dynamics?

So. The issue I run into with this one: heist stories are all about competency. They're about the world's greatest thief teaming up with the world's smartest hacker and the world's fastest retrieval specialist to steal stuff.

Animorphs is a story about everyman characters: 4 C-average students, one middle school dropout, one cadet who slept or daydreamed through all his classes. The inciting incident is Jake not making the basketball team, unless it's Tobias following them because he doesn't have any friends, unless it's Rachel getting out of gymnastics in time to meet them because she sucks at gymnastics. They have no mentors, and (with the partial exception of Cassie and Ax) they have no relevant skills. Seeing them learn through doing is half the fun of the series. So, like, making Jake an ultra-clever mastermind and Rachel an ultra-graceful cat burglar just feels like it'd be making them out of character.

I can't believe we've reached the end of 2023. It was an up and down year for me personally. I've been struggling more with my health in these last couple of months with little answers as of now. But I'm grateful to be able to come here and interact with this fandom. I am so grateful to all the amazing people that are still here. We may be small, but this fandom has such heart. I have loved finding new people to follow and become friends with this year. I've loved hosting the book clubs and getting to know people and their MCs better through that. 2023 in the fandom is definitely one to remember.

I am proud of all the things I've written this year. It has been fun to continue exploring my OTPs. If I counted correctly, I shared 74 stories. It's not my most active year, but it's more than I thought I had.

Thank you to everyone who has ever supported me and my writing. I can't tell you how much it means to me.

Who are 10 characters you wished were LIs?

Oh babe I know there are people who have wandering eyes for the side characters in every book, but I am not one of those people 😂 There are a few that I wished were LIs, but I don’t think I’m gonna be able to give you 10. Lemme see who I can even remember 🤔

1. Carter Jackson — What can I say other than he as a character deserved better and we as readers deserved better?

2. Robin Flores — If I wasn’t numbering these for the sake of clarity, he’d be right up there next to Carter. I don’t think the implications of his treatment and him not being an LI are as insidious as the ones concerning Carter, but I do think I made it pretty clear that I wholeheartedly believe the story would’ve been a lot better if Robin was an option when TNA was releasing

3. Joaquin Morales — Fun, sweet, and sexy. Nothing more to say. He would’ve been a 10/10 LI

4. Tobias Carrick — I’m including him because he was also fun and sexy. But tbh I already had a hard enough time choosing between Bryce and Raf in OH, so I did not need another person added to that mix

5. Everett (the Thief captain from TE) — I’m including him because there was a point in the first few chapters or so of the book where I was wishing he was an LI because I wasn’t all that attracted to Griffin or Beckett. But Beckett grew on me and is actually still one of my favorite LIs. So I’m not really trippin about Everett anymore. He’s still hot though so he gets a spot

6. This dude in any story where he looks like this

This is basically just me trying to stretch the list a little longer, but he is also pretty hot. And I’m sure if they’ve used him as a background character in any single LI books, he probably would have been better than said LIs

Austin is called the Magician because street magic is his whole deal. Much like Sylvie, he is 100% human and does not have any real magic shit, but given that he is a) a really good liar and b) incredibly skilled at slight of hand, he is perfectly capable of convincing people that he has funky magic powers. “Magician” is also just what Tobias called him as a sort of friendly-teasing nickname when they first met several years before all the Moonstone stuff. They have also pulled off several heists together and Austin has enthusiastically helped Tobias with a LOT of arson.

Colin… the loml he’s such a strange little creechur. The number one thing to. Remember about Colin is that he is not human. Or a person, as he’ll tell you himself. The face he uses does not belong to him, and neither does his name. He’s a shapeshifter capable of turning into anyone in the world, as well as people he just makes up - which is why he actually has six different identities! “Colin” is just what he uses the most. If you ask why he chooses to present himself as a crust punk teenage boy he will not give you a straight answer. He also does not have anything close to a “true form,” unless you count the shapeless glitching void. Fun fact about Colin: he has existed for thousands, maybe millions of years. He spent a lot of his early life hiding and watching humans, and he only started actually interacting with people in Ancient Greece. He witnessed the first Olympics in person.

TOBIAS. The fucking guy ever (derogatory) (affectionate). Serial killer. Arsonist. Thief. Self-proclaimed janitor. Obvious theatre kid. Tobias made a name (lol) for himself by committing a LOT of very violent murders under the alias of “Nameless” and wearing a smiling Venetian mask (i have a pic for reference heehee)

he very specifically targets the rich and wealthy, especially those who bring harm to people with less. He refers to himself as a “janitor,” cleaning up the messes that nobody else is willing to deal with, and is all kinds of fucked up if you hadn’t previously guessed. After having a run in with a big bad guy and getting kidnapped aggressively hired by Moonstone, he got to be the main character for the first few months I had this paracosm, until eventually it stopped being an angsty violent drama and started being more like a sitcom where everyone is the main character at different points. He’s also british because of course he is (jack is as well but shhh)
