Seeing several people GENUINELY think that Raeda and Huntlow aren’t canon PURELY because neither of them kissed like Luz and Amity did is REALLY SHOWING that people’s media analysis skills are getting worse 😐

TWEWY is a game with love its centre and I think any reading which insists Neku doesn't love all of his partners (just in a general platonic sense) will automatically result in the thematic messages being missed entirely

Beefleaf isn't canon. Mxtx has said she doesn't like to write another gay ship different from the main (she struggled with svsss)
I have heard about this! The content I saw was just so insistent about Beefleaf that I wondered if maybe I was misremembering and the "no same-gender side couples" thing applied to MDZS only. (I have gotten similar vibes from Moshang and from whatever Yue QIngyuan and Shen Jiu's ship name is, but I've now obtained Vol. 1 of SVSSS and plan to read it, so if those two aren't actually canon, don't tell me! It can be a surprise!)
The "no side couples"--or, in MDZS's case, "no queer characters AT ALL besides the protag, his love interest, and the disgraced goth weirdo who annihilates himself to resurrect the protag"--thing confuses me, because... I guess I don't get the point of it? I totally understand not having the bandwidth to develop more than one couple. The challenge of adequately building up other relationships fully independent of your main couple without detracting from the exploits of your protagonist and his love interest could be daunting, as would expanding the story's focus and juggling multiple equally-prominent lead characters for an effective ensemble piece. But here it seems like people picked up a vibe between the characters from what was already there in the text and then MXTX was like, "oh, no, they're not a couple! there's just the one couple!" and THAT I don't get. If she's disinterested in writing women, but has a cast of attractive men who are all obsessed with each other, why not toss a romance in there between some of the guys? Again, you can keep it entirely as-is and just toss a kiss in there or confirm in interviews that yes, they were in love, and you're so happy readers picked up on that even though you didn't get to tell their full story on the page.
I am extrapolating based on the Xiyao situation specifically, so maybe this doesn't apply to her other works! But it is a choice that confuses me. A couple doesn't have to be that developed; Xuanli certainly aren't, but their existence is a major plot point. I should think that the presence of other m/m couples would bolster the main couple, if anything, because it sets a precedent for them existing in their world. There are situations where adding an expressly romantic element would change something fundamental about the relationship, but there are just as many where the addition of a romantic element changes nothing or makes it make more sense (case in point: Xue Yang's freakout after killing Xiao Xingchen).
Like I said, I get not wanting to devote energy to it, and I also get that sometimes a work or performance is received by the audience in ways the artist didn't intend (this is the Destiel website, after all), but to make it a conscious choice to have One M/M Couple Only? Based on what I currently know, this perplexes me.

i have to try so hard not to get upset when i have conversations with my family about love and sexuality because i know they will never understand anything outside of amatonormativity but fuck it hurts
being told that i will never have a best friend who will want to be with me forever because 'everyone will eventually leave because everyone wants to fall in love and build a family' just gets to me even though i know there are people who want that but it's just so hard to remember when no one in my life does

maybe i am just an aromantic hag but god. i genuinely believe there are a Lot of character relationships that are infinitely more interesting and engaging when read platonicly rather than romantically, and it’s a shame that it often feels like there’s not much space in fandoms to talk about it or make art centered around it, lest your creations be put under the automatic “WOW CUTE SHIP!! ^_^” lens that some people just can’t fuckin turn off. shit sucks sometimes, man

Entertaining Highlights from Sasuke Retsuden:
Sasuke's cellmate Penzila, who is in jail for defrauding numerous rich women by marrying them to pay his gambling debts, implying that while he's a poor gambler he is an excellent flirt!
Sasuke's other cellmate Ganno, an elderly man who makes nail art with pine needles and juice made from his own feet.
Sasuke admonishing Sakura for “courting danger” as if she did not just rescue him from a poison attack he got from fighting with a dinosaur: “No need. Go back. It’s too dangerous.” “Dangerous?” Sakura got a very serious look on her face. “You think I can’t handle it?” “I know your strength and abilities. But I’m telling you that I can handle this by myself,” he replied.
Sasuke's response to being asked to pet the dinosaur he fought, which is much funnier in light of the fact he has one arm: “What? Me?!” Penzila firmly shook his head. “No, no, no, no! Absolutely not! I like my arm right where it is, thank you.” “Okay, Sasuke then,” Jiji said. “I actually need my arm too,” Sasuke told him.
Sasuke infiltrating the prison director's office by being a big wooden stick that Sakura carries around: Tapping the staff/Sasuke on the floor, Sakura mimicked Fandal’s mannerisms and movements as she climbed the stairs.
Sasuke's way of flirting with Sakura being telling her to get wrinkly: “You never change,” he said and put a hand to her cheek. “You could have more wrinkles.” “What?” Sakura laughed, looking not displeased, and lowered her gaze. “Where’s this coming from? Did someone say something to you?” “No, I just wanted to tell you.”
The reveal two-thirds into the novel that the prison director is trying to create his own version Jurassic Park using Edo Tensei and some chickens in his basement?!
Sasuke tossing a baby tyrannosaurus at a bigger tyrannosaurus to defeat it??
Sasuke hugging his dinosaur friend goodbye and thinking of how snowflakes sparkle like a rainbow in the moonlight before it immediately cuts to a man being impaled by a dinosaur right beside him?!

Seriously, though. Buddy Daddies. Oh my GOSH it's so good and I'm going slightly feral because no one I know has seen it yet, and like...I need to reassess my top 10 anime list, but I think it might be up there ;A;
The premise: Partners in crime, professional assassins Kazuki Karusu and Rei Suwa receive a mission to kill a certain man at a Christmas party. Unfortunately, as they carry out their task, they discover that his four-year-old daughter is there, going to meet him for the first time. They kill their target...but what happens to this little girl, Miri? Her mother was the guy's mistress, and she apparently doesn't want Miri anymore, so now Miri has no one. No one, that is...except for the two of them! So these two hardened assassins decide that they will be her family, and suddenly they have to figure out how to be dads while also being the assassins who killed her father.
Tumblr media
Gaaah, everything about this anime was so much fun! <3 Kazuki has a sunny, friendly disposition, cooking and cleaning and bouncing around and making Miri laugh. Rei is dour and taciturn, speaking in a monotone and never cracking a smile. And Miri is the most adorable little girl you've ever seen. Five seconds of her on screen, and I knew that I never wanted anything bad to happen to her, ever. And it's clear her two papas agree! The three of them just work so amazingly well together; I loved how Kazuki and Rei interacted with each other as well as with Miri.
Tumblr media
It's hilarious, but it's also so sweet and heartfelt. There were multiple times that I laughed out loud, and one part towards the end got me bawling like a baby (even though I could see it coming a mile away). There's found family, characters overcoming trauma, dealing with the ups and downs and ins and outs of parenting a small child, and then they throw in some awesome gunslinging every now and then as a treat. The animation is slick, the character designs are great, and Miri's actress does such a good job of sounding like a four-year-old, I would never have guessed she was an adult if I didn't know otherwise! :O
Mmph. This is just...so precisely my cup of tea T^T

I rewatched xxxHolic while I was away (and found somewhere to watch Season 2/the OVA) and came out the other side with two self inserts, only one of which I've managed to draw up reference for fdkgjdfk I'll get to the other one eventually.
Quick lore for WaTanuki under the cut
He's a young Tanuki that Domeki found injured and nursed back to health. After falling in love with Domeki, the Tanuki starts using his transformation powers to turn into Watanuki, who he perceives to be Domeki's most precious/favorite person.
At first it's just mimicry for disguise sake, staying near Domeki on his walk to and from school, clinging all over him the entire time (driving the real Watanuki crazy). Then he starts actually mimicking Watanuki, making Domeki lunches exactly as he's seen Watanuki do, mimicing his voice, his silly movements, copying him in every way.
Eventually Domeki realizes that the Tanuki is trying to take Watanuki's place and tells him to knock it off in his usual blunt manner. The next day the Tanuki doesn't accompany Domeki to school, but is still there when they arrive, granted in his Tanuki form and looking rather sad. Watanuki, ever the worrier, thinks Domeki's just being an uncaring asshole and runs off during lunch to go find the Tanuki.
The Tanuki decides this is the perfect time to finally become Watanuki, and locks the real Watanuki in the school's outdoor storage shed, taking his form and playing the perfect Watanuki act to fool Himiwari and Domeki.
It isn't until they're about to leave school that Domeki notices a leaf in WaTanuki's hair. Removing it turn him back into his spirit form, causing Domeki to demand to know where the real Watanuki is.
After freeing Watanuki from the freezing shed, the little Tanuki begins to cry. He just wanted to become Domeki's most precious person. Someone everyone liked, someone Domeki loved, someone with a lot of friends.
Domeki kisses the little Tanuki's forehead and assures him he is precious to him, just as he is.
After that, Domeki commonly wears a Tanuki charm, which is his little Tanuki in disguise, either as a necklace or bracelet. The Tanuki isn't as strong as the Pipe Fox, but serves the same animal companion purpose.
He also sometimes still transforms into WaTanuki, though just for fun or to tease Watanuki.
