#tintin in tibet is a love story

The Tibet story makes me want to bite and scream
Like it's full of love, it is a love story, but not just the obvious "Tintin loves Chang so much he risks his life" but more of "Haddock loves Tintin so much he doesn't abandon him"
Like even for Tintin alright? Like he risks his life for Chang and believes he's alive but that's not new, that's Tintin's core as a character
BUT the moment Haddock is ready to sacrifice himself for Tintin, he is "WE BOTH DIE OR BOTH LIVE"
LIKE LIKE HADDOCK GIVES TINTIN A REASON TO LIVE INSTEAD OF RISKING HIS LIFE?! LIKE LIKE
And you can feel how huge the whole adventure was for him as things change after Tibet and Tintin wants to stay at home with his family and and I am emotional 😭

hi! loving your art. I was watching your awesome stories/gifs and I was wondering: how did Chang develop his feelings for Tintin? Did he discover them before or after him? How did he react and why? (English is not my first language so if you see a grammatical mistake, I'm sorry. Also, sorry if so many questions made you feel like you were in a philosophy exam)
Thank you so much! As a contrast to the rest of the Marlinspike team I'm writing Chang as someone who makes friends and develops crushes pretty easily!
I imagine he's had a crush on Tintin for some time, possibly from when they first met. He's been at the mercy of his circumstances for most of his life until that point - Tintin basically makes him feel capable of doing stuff.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
He's pretty heartbroken after the Blue Lotus. Tintin doesn't contact him for years. Chang is struggling to adjust to his new family and is failing at school, having missed out on a good education for a few years prior. Until Tibet he feels pretty hopeless, he will never live up to the time when he took down a drug ring.
His near death experience in Tibet shakes him out of this rut. He starts to travel and take up hobbies like dance and photography. Didi trains him in some basic martial arts. Tintin makes an effort to actually stay in touch this time. Chang has some abandonment issues as he's frequently lost people throughout his life, so he's someone who's willing to give people second chances, even if they've hurt him badly. Chang thinks he's well over his crush on Tintin when he comes around to Belgium for his studies, but falls for him again very quickly!
Unlike Tintin, Chang is a lot more comfortable with who he is. He's used to being the odd one out and has generally low expectations for himself, so just goes with the flow.
Tumblr media
Below I talk a little with how I'm going about writing him and the historical context surrounding this, cw for mentions of racism (sinophobia) and queerphobia:
I'm writing Chang as bi, I thought it would be interesting to explore as Asian men were perceived differently in the 30s compared to today. While Asian men in the West are currently heavily desexualised in the early 20th century they were stereotyped as predatory and deviant. In London a lot of Chinese immigrants were male dockworkers, so when they married white women there was a lot of fearmongering about predatory and disloyal Chinese men.
A lot of depictions of Asian men in Western media reflected these stereotypes (and often used queercoding to push the idea of Asian men being animalistic seducers - General Henry Chang in Shanghai Express (1932) was written to be bisexual while posing as a threat to the white leads). Some examples off the top of my head include Hishuru Tori from The Cheat (1915) and The Mask of Fu Manchu (1932). Novels frequently depicted Chinese drug lords with borderline supernatural powers in manipulation.
On the other hand I've noticed how fans frequently depict Chang as someone who's submissive, demure and soft, which ignores how ridiculously brave and proactive he is in canon (stealing documents from police officers, charging into a man immediately after getting shot at by a machine gun, I could go on!). It's a common example of Fandom Racism (not accusing anyone specifically, it's just a trend I've noticed.)
When writing Chang I'm kinda reckoning with two different eras. From a contemporary angle I'm writing him as a love interest, which as an Asian guy I rarely see in media today. I also gotta consider his own time and context, how he would navigate being a queer Chinese guy, and how that would affect his relationship with others and himself.

MY FAVORITE TINTIN SIDE CHARACTERS
ARRGRGWHDHEH I'M VERY VERY PROUD OF THIS I'M NGL!!!!!!! I LOVE THE WAY I COLORED THE CHARACTERS, I LOVE THE POSES I DREW THEM IN, I MADE SOME DECENT COMPOSITION IN THIS ONE!!!! HATE THE EDITING I DID I FUCKING SUCK AT EDITING
Anyway, I'm going to ramble about these guys and you can't leave until I'm done ok? Ok.
First of all, MY BOY MY SON MY PERSONAL LITTLE DEMON, ABDULLAH!!!!!!! he is very endearing to me!!! But I really do wish we could've seen more of him!!!! He looks mischievous enough to sneak on adventures along with the marlinspike crew himself for shits and giggles!!!!! HIM AND HIS DAD'S DYNAMIC IN LAND OF BLACK GOLD IS MY FAVORITE IT MAKES ME SO GIDDY AND HAPPY. like no matter how obnoxious and annoying Abdullah's pranks can become, his dad will forever love him unconditionally. MY FAVORITE DYNAMIC. I MISS THEM SO MUCH.
A little note, even though a lot of poc representation in tintin is pretty influenced by the stereotypes of the time, and a bit of orientalism, tintin and the land of black gold is also the first time in my childhood where the words "assalamualaikum" Was muttered in any piece of animated media. It definitely wasn't perfect, but that was important to me as a Muslim child. Maybe that's why Abdullah and his dad hold a special place in my heart!
Next up we've got ARREGEHFHFHHGHJ!!!!!!! CHANG!!!!!!! MY FRIEND FROM SCHOOL WHO HELPED END A CRIME RING IN SHANGHAI!!!!!!! I adore him and his personality so much!!!! HE WAS ONE OF MY FAVORITE CHARACTERS AS A KID AND HE STILL IS TODAY WHEN I REWATCH BLUE LOTUS!!!!!!!! The way that the moment he was saved by Tintin in that flood he pledged his undying loyalty to Tintin will never not be sweet to me. HE IS SO TALENTED AND CUNNING, HE SAVED TINTIN FROM CERTAIN DOOM MULTIPLE TIMES IN THE LITTLE TIME THEY'VE SPENT TOGETHER, AND IN TINTIN IN TIBET, TINTIN SAVES HIM ONCE AGAIN (Tintin in tibet is also a very memorable and special episode for me) AND JUST-- ARGEHDBEHF I CAN CONTINUE ON AND ON ABOUT HOW CHANG SHOULDVE BEEN INCLUDED IN MORE ADVENTURES!!!!! actually Tintin has TONS OF CHARACTERS who should have been given more important roles in a lot of different stories!!!! Idk maybe that's just a wish that will never be fulfilled.... Still I can dream!
And last but DEFINITELY not least... THE MILANESE NIGHTINGALE HERSELF, BIANCA CASTAFIORE!!!!!!!!!!!! AGHHDHEHFHJDHV MY GORGEOUS MY BEAUTIFUL MY LOVE MY EVERYTHING I MISS HER SO MUCH
SHE WAS A HIGHLIGHT FOR ME!!!!!! AND SHE IS VERY UNDERRATED!!!! I love seeing how much she treasures her friends, how she's so dramatic about everything, how she has such an unapologetically loud and large presence and personality everywhere she goes, how she is genuinely passionate about her singing and her art, how she clearly knows her worth and won't settle for less from anyone.
Every time she was on screen she always made me feel very happy and warm inside, also I really like her voice!!!!!
AND HER DESIGN!!!!! ARRRGHWHFHH HER DESIGN!!!
I'm ngl, she was the hardest for me to draw. But at the end I'm quite satisfied with the results!!!!
She would be such an amazing friend. SHE'S ALWAYS BRINGING GIFTS AND BEING CONSIDERATE WITH HER FRIENDS, AND SHE WOULD NEVER HIDE JUST HOW MUCH PEOPLE MEAN TO HER
PLEEEEASEEEE CASTAFIORE I MISS YOU SO MUCH GIRLFRIEND COME BACK TO ME-
Anyway, the last picture is how I'd imagine Chang and Castafiore's first meeting would go. She as always, acts as sweet and polite and extra af as she always does, let's Chang know that Tintin's talked a lot about him! And then she would bring out some biscuits and pastries she bought as a gift for everyone, and then she and Chang would sit together while eating, and they get along really well, CHANG HAS A WICKED SENSE OF HUMOR THAT CASTAFIORE CAN'T GET ENOUGH OF, (haddock would be completely dumbfounded with how good at talking to Castafiore Chang is, and how anyone could talk to her for so long) but little did haddock know, in their conversations, Castafiore does a whole lot more listening than speaking, especially when Chang starts to tell his back story, and all the things that have happened to him and Tintin. After Chang ends his story, he looks up at her after a while of being lost in his story, and mascara is dripping down her face silently, her mouth is agape, and for a few moments couldn't say anything.
Suddenly she burst out loud, pulled Chang into a hug, and sobs after listening to the horrors this sweet kid has gone through.
In over a few hours she seems to have grown a strong attachment to this kid, she'll probably send a package filled with gifts a few months later, along with a long letter talking about what she's been up to and her wishes that Chang will succeed with anything he's currently busy with, and that he shall take care of himself well.
Anyways, I hope you enjoyed the small character appreciation I was able to share for some obscure/underrated characters! And that they will occupy your mind just for a little while. I love these three so much, tintin shaped me as a person, tintin made my childhood, I hope you have a great day.

IM A HADDOTIN NON SUPPORTER TOO LIKE TF IS WRING WITH SOME PPL😭😭
ALERT: this post is basically me hating the ship, but! It's my account and opinion,i didn't mean to offend nobody,if you don't like, don't read.
OH??? YOU ARE A NON SUPPORTER?????
YOU! I LOVE YOU BEAUTIFUL PERSON THAT I DON'T KNOW NOTHING ABOUT!!!
But,making things clear here.
It's a normal ship. There's a lot of ways for a relationship like this happen and be health so i don't spread hate,i just scroll away when something like this happen to show up.
I hate it for mostly because it's almost
EVERY
FUCKING
WHERE
You can't normally search for Tintin content without seeing some of those. I just want some photos of my precious boy and best friend/father together you know? But it's difficult because there's A LOT about this ship.
Oh,and people assuming every single act of affection between them as a lover thing. This. This makes me want to commit war crimes-
Like bro??? They can hug like normal friends too you know??? I remember seeing other account talking about the tibet adventure. One of my favorites because showed Tintin's relationship with haddock beautifully. That even when Haddock didn't believed he still followed his friend and was more than willing to sacrifice himself for him. I cried bro.
But then,it's reconized as a love story??? God give me patient because if you give me strength i'll kill for fun.
Even so,i normally keep it for myself because it's kinda of idiot to go and hate something that you literally can just scroll way and go on with your life. Damm,i didn't know how much i was needing to vent about it lol.
Just to finish it properly. My dear unknow person, feel more than welcome and safe to be a non supporter on my blog,i'm really happy to have other peoples that think the same! 😌❤️

Friends to Lovers: Two characters have been friends for years and value their friendship above everything. Unfortunately, they’ve both also secretly fallen in love with each other - but are both too scared to confess because it feels like a betrayal of their friendship.
Remember, I'm utilizing this prompt list. I probably won't hit all, but I am trying to get to the highest voted ones in my polls. Trying to use different ships, but feel free to shoot me an ask or DM if there's a specific ship you would like to see for any of the prompts.
Betrayal to Our Friendship
Ship: Haddotin
Rating: G
Warnings: N/A
Words: 1610
It wasn’t supposed to be like this. Without a doubt, the worst mistake of Tintin’s life. He wasn’t even quite sure how it happened. After all, Captain Haddock had been nothing more than a friend. Certainly Tintin had noticed his admirable bravery, his charming whimsicality, even his breath-catching kindness. However, he had thought it was…professional. Or if it was personal, not anything that would affect him to this degree.
However, their trip to Tibet had thrown everything on its head, and a fact that Tintin hadn’t given much thought to at the time, was finally able to worm its way into his mind. He was in love with Haddock. It was the only explanation for the way his heart had shattered when he thought Haddock was going to cut his line, only to turn around and soar when he actually came back after Tintin tried to push him away. After all, he had possessed a single-minded determination to find his dear friend, Chang, but it hadn’t destroyed him like the thought of Haddock being lost to him had. The warmth he had felt reuniting with Chang again had been a different kind of warmth than when he was with the captain. Like the very air was charged with an invisible pull that always kept him close. Like magnets, like gravity, it was a law of attraction that Tintin had somehow managed to ignore…until now.
Tintin groaned, flipping himself over in bed as he tried to bury his head deeper under his pillow. He supposed to some, this would be an enlightening discovery. The chance to pursue something new and exciting, but he couldn’t. Not with Haddock. There was absolutely no way the older man saw him the same way. The gap between their ages certainly wasn’t off putting to Tintin, he couldn’t say the same for Haddock. His friendly touches probably meant to be more…of a mentor than Tintin clearly interpreted them. No, confessing would only ruin perhaps the best thing in Tintin’s life. He couldn’t let Haddock know how he felt.
Snowy clearly had enough of Tintin’s pity party, choosing to pounce on his chest, licking at his neck as he attempted to dig Tintin out from beneath the pillow.
“Alright, Snowy. Okay.” Tintin laughed, rolling over onto his back as he reached up to scratch the pup’s ears. “We should do something fun today. Maybe go to our favorite park? What do you think, boy?”
Snowy yipped his approval of the choice before hopping down and running to the door, pawing at it and whining. Tintin shook his head.
“Let me get dressed at least first.”
***
Tintin enjoyed being outside. It was cleansing to him, having the sun warm his skin as he passed through various shades of green. It was part of the reason why he had never been able to accept a desk job. How could he possibly think when there was a world just beyond those doors beckoning him to explore? It was actually pure chance when he managed to land his dream job.
He had just graduated from university and wanted to take a couple of weeks to enjoy living before he was forced to go out job hunting. He happened upon a human trafficking operation, got himself out of a bind, and wrote a story over it that he tried to sell to the local paper. He does a lot of that now. Selling stories to any paper willing to publish him, which now that he’s made a name for himself is quite a bit. However, at that time, the paper he was trying to sell the story to wanted their own people to write it up, not an amatuer. Instead, he sent it back home to his local paper who were overjoyed to publish such a piece! Since then, Le Vingtième Siècle is always his first call for giving him his first big break.
Snowy, who had his nose to the ground, suddenly perked up before he gave happy yips racing towards whatever had caught his interest. Tintin took off after him, about to shout for him to come back when he heard another voice beat him to it.
“Snowy! Calm down, you excitable pup! Where’s your master?”
Tintin froze, coming around the corner and confirming that it was in fact Captain Haddock. His throat felt tight as his earlier realization seemed to blare to the forefront of his thoughts. Which was ridiculous. Nothing had to change. If Tintin didn’t let his initial attraction to Haddock stand in the way of their friendship, there should be no reason for this to be any different. Still, his movements felt robotic and smile felt forced as he pushed himself forward to greet the man.
“Captain! What are you doing here?”
It was almost like watching Tintin’s own emotions in reverse as the easy smile fell, and Haddock froze at Tintin’s approach. Tintin stopped, acknowledging the distance between them and wondering what exactly could be going through the older man’s mind.
“There ya are, Tintin. I’ve been looking for you. I think there’s something we need to talk about.”
Thorin took in Haddock’s guarded stance, his hands fisted in his pockets, and his refusal to meet Tintin’s eyes. Ice traveled straight down the nerve in his back making Tintin feel more like a livewire. How…how did he know already? What did Tintin do to betray himself? Numbly, he nodded before moving towards the nearby park bench taking a seat on the very edge. Haddock followed the movement, making sure to leave considerable space between the two. Tintin felt something inside him hiccup as his brain raced to find a way to salvage their friendship.
Snowy let his eyes drift between the two with a peculiar look before deciding his time would be better spent chasing one of the squirrels up a tree. Silence sat thick over the duo, each lost to their own thoughts. Just when Tintin had worked out an amenable solution, Haddock began, his words nearly tearing Tintin in two.
“I don’t think it would be a good idea for me to continue joining you on your adventures.”
Tintin breathed past the invisible fingers gripping his vocal cords as he answered as calmly as he could.
That’s fine, Captain. I’d never want to force you to join me.”
“It’s not that.” Haddock snapped, reaching for his pipe but not yet lighting it. “I came to realize something. Something that had changed after…our last adventure.”
Tintin’s eyes squeezed shut. He didn’t want to hear it. He didn’t want to have to sit through the captain’s rejection. It was his fault for letting his emotions get the better of him. He knew Haddock would never want someone so much younger than him. Although, there was a bitterness in Tintin that wanted to remind the good captain that he at least acted more adult than most, present company included.
“This isn’t easy to say, because I do value our friendship. But I feel like not saying anything would be more of a betrayal, and I can’t do that to you.”
Here it comes. Tintin braced himself for the blow that would surely cut deeper than any injury he’s had before.
“I’m in love with you, Auggie.”
Wait…what? The roaring in his ears, the build-up in his chest, it all just…disappeared to be replaced with something lighter that swooped right through his belly.
“What did you say?” Tintin gasped.
Haddock turned to look at him, his bright eyes hard and resigned.
“I love you.”
It was something more glorious to hear a second time. Haddock broke contact though, shaking his head.
“It’s alright. You don’t have to say anything. I know you don’t want to be saddled with an old sea dog like myself. I just thought you deserved to know which is why I should stay away for a little while. Give you some space. I’ll miss your company of course, but you deserve to live the life you want without being bogged down by…”
“Archie.” Tintin demanded, interrupting the captain’s self-deprecating rant.
The older man slowly turned to him, fear haunting his every movement right before Tintin leaned forward and kissed him. It wasn’t a long kiss, more of a gentle press of lips, but it was enough for Tintin as he categorized the captain’s chapped lips, the tickle of his mustache and beard, and the lingering scent of pipe tobacco even though Haddock hadn’t actually smoked in front of him. When he pulled away, he couldn’t help startling at the tears that welled in Haddock’s eyes but had yet to fall.
“Tintin, you don’t have to…”
In a panic, Tintin realized Haddock thought he was humoring him. He quickly grabbed his hand while shaking his hand.
“No! Archie, I…I feel the same. I thought…I thought you were saying this because you learned of my…regard. Please…please, don’t leave.”
Tintin squeezed his eyes shut, hoping his faltering words were enough to convince Haddock. He wasn’t good with expressing his emotions, but he hoped Haddock knew him well enough to understand this. After what felt like a long moment, Haddock slipped his hand to cup Tintin behind the neck, forcing his head forward until it gently bumped against Haddock’s own.
“I won’t. I’m yours for as long as you’ll have me.”
Tintin smiled brightly wishing he had something he could say that would convey the same sentiment. Instead he put his hands around Haddock’s neck, trying to bring the man closer. A relieved chuckle in his ear let him know his efforts were received and appreciated.

Hi! I really your fics! Came for Stephanie Brown currently waking my way through best life.
My impression of Iron Fist was that it was like flawed in premise. It’s hard to make that one specialist white guy who got mystical monk powers in fantasy Tibet not seem like cultural appropriation. (Dunno why Dr.Strange doesn’t catch more flack.) Those characters were first made a while ago.
Anyways you make Danny Rand seem so likeable. Really liked that one with him and Colleen. Is he like that in the comics?
Hi, I love this ask! That Iron Fist story had a truly stupid amount of thought put into it, and I wish I had more opportunity to speak about it! I had a lot to say. I'll say one of the things here, and maybe reblog this with more specific commentary on the fic. But yes I want to talk about Iron Fist again!!! Only person on Earth!!
Yes, Iron Fist is based off an outdated trope. I'm not going to use the word problematic, because I do think it was sometimes an earnest exploration of an idea that had to be told in a way that the audiences would accept. In the 1970s, there was this perception (reality?) that white audiences simply would not watch a story with a lead of color. If you wanted to tell any sort of story about other cultures, then the lead had to be white. I've always called this the 'Dances With Wolves' story, and when it falls into problematic shit TvTropes calls it Mighty Whitey.
This is everywhere. Absolutely everywhere. Everywhere before 2000 (generously), and frequently even these days. It's even portal fantasy/isekai. It does not end. I'd break it down into two categories, four options. Very broadly:
Dances With Wolves (or Atlantis The Lost Empire, for a movie I like). The white hero is the POV character for white audiences to project onto and for wish fulfillment. As I talked about a while back, the basic assumption is that the audience is white and male, so he's the audience insert. In better movies, this character is used as an entry point so the movie can explore the other culture and their problems through the white viewpoint. In worse movies, this is straightforwardly Mighty Whitey where the POC are interchangeable hypemen present to make the MC look cool and heroic and save them all and probably become their king. This is Iron Fist.
Pulp Adventurer Hero (Tintin, the shit Indiana Jones was based off). Think of these as basically portal fantasies or isekais. In the 1800s when Americans got a taste of the Adventure (TM) bug, add in the Race For Africa and Orientalism and Wild West, you have a lot of intrepid super spies or archeologists or explorers investigating Distant Lands like the Congo or China. This was all late 1800s, got super popular in the 20s with dime novels, and tapered off in the 60s. Orientalism was at a high and Asian countries were viewed as very exotic and alien and foreign, so it got the brunt of this. Every single solitary one was HORRIFICALLY RACIST. Like holy SHIT. The mysterious Congo pygmies were little better than talking animals. Better, slightly more modern versions are Indiana Jones and the Mummy, who's directly based off these dudes, and is only pretty racist instead of horrifically racist.
You can organize the vast majority of Hollywood media predominantly featuring other cultures made before the 1990s into one of these categories. At best, they're outdated. At worst, there are some things I ask you not to Google. I do love Little Nemo in Slumberland and Tintin but holy hell.
This is the chain around Iron Fist's leg. You can slap a coat of paint on it, you can make it as woke as you like, but you cannot escape the basic foundations of the problematic story (and this is problematic, not outdated). You would have to literally kill off or get rid of Danny to fix that. When I talked earlier about how Iron Fist does not meaningfully engage with race the way it wants to engage with race, it is because of these things.
Very few tropes cannot be done well and should never be used. This trope isn't one of them. You could take any of these stories and really drill down into them, break them down into pieces to study the source code and genetics and foundation, and build it back up into something truly fascinating.
Never saw the Iron Fist show, but I'm guessing it wasn't deftly written and it didn't really engage with this. I think it's possible to write a good Iron Fist story, but you cannot do it through ignoring these foundations or dumping so much stuff on top of them to try and hide them. You can't. You have to drill down into this. There's stuff you can say using this trope, and if you write thoughtfully and actually have something to say you can write a damn good story (By the way, this is why the Mandarin in IM3 fucked hard - it didn't slap a coat of paint on the hugely problematic character, it looked at why the character existed and what the modern day equivalent of that character is and rebuilt it with the intent of having something to say).
Iron Fist is inherently bad. It is also not inherently bad. Its stories are inherently boring. Its stories can be inherently interesting. You just really have to open the clockface and see what makes the story tick. Anyway I'm Narcissus looking into his own AO3 because I actually did this and it fucked hard. IT CAN BE DONE YALL! IT CAN BE DONE!
TL;DR: Danny is nothing like that in the comics :D

hiya!! do you have any mount eerie songs in particular you'd like to recommend?? ive listened to lost wisdom and i hold nothing and fell in love with em!!
love your art and your writing also!! they both give a sense of cosiness that i can't explain so so nice xx
oh man i always get mixed up anyway about where a bunch of songs are from since he rerecords things and uses parts of songs between things , also i dont remember if ive listened to all of No Flashlight or not. (also just found more comments on mount eerie songs that i left 5 years ago and then i guess entirely forgot about. lol). but anyway thats a ramble but, for sure check out: Solar system (live in copenhagen), Wooly mammoth’s mighty absence, voice in headphones, what?, who?, Cold mountain, Blue light on the floor, Through the trees pt.2. With my hands out. im definitely forgetting stuff for sure.. honestly listening to it all in order is worth it because he calls back to lyrics and strumming patterns and things.and theyre all v good. (except i don't think i've listened to all of Ocean roar yet.) and i want to recommend songs like Soria Moria and Tintin in tibet and Two paintings by Nikolai Astrup and Crow and Earth and Distortion and Ravens, but you kind of have to listen to them as part of their albums (which ik is so hard because man those albums are devastating but , yknow. its weird extracted from them, theyre part of their stories)
(i have a playlist on my phone thats my personal 'best of elverum' thats his stuff from mount eerie and the microphones , so maybe i should put that on spotify or something)
also thankyou sm :'-) glad u like it

tintin in tibet used to be one of my least favourite tintin stories as a kid bc i didn’t care for the stagnant setting/lack of a clear ‘bad guy’ but now as an adult with depression seeing the characters’ devotion to each other and how much they’re willing to go through because they love each other…….. yeah try not to cry challenge failed

Tintin and Haddock for the character opinion thing
A little long to my tastes, heres a readmore
Tintin! tried to give him eyeballs but gave up bc he looked like an illumation entretainment background character lol
Tumblr media
He looks. Terrible. I havent drawn him years
Tumblr media
ALMOST BINGO'D
wasted potential: I just think if hergé hadnt been a weirdo catholic on a mission, tintin would've been more interesting and have more emotional depth even if it is clear he has some underlying personal issues it is never actually Seen bc he's suppossed to be the paragon of virtue and strenght and all that. I havent read the comics in years so i may be wrong but that was my impression then and thats my impression now
not as deep as they seem: honestly! i can see where everyones coming from bc obviously a kid going around and doing whats correct on impulse or trying to decipher mysteries etc is bound to have some trauma but he rlly isnt all that in canon. He's just a Good and Strong and Pure Catholic Boy :))))) (rage)
nothing i like about them is technically canon: yes and no. I will admit theres some aspects of canon tintin that make him likeable like hurrying to help or being pretty reckless, but it's more about the implications i can come up with??
why do they look like that: im joking i know why they look like that but still. He looks so bland in comparison to the rest of the cast....
they work better as part of a dynamic: HONESTLY you can make him interact with any character in the series and there will be a fun back and forth, even with snowy it's funny/sweet how they interact with each other. Tintin rlly needs the other characters to actually shine bc to me he's kinda bland, like theres a wall and theres nothing that bounces back against him if his family or friends arent there
they got too much screentime: im joking BUT this isnt even exclusive to the story hes in i mean like theres too much of him around and i find him kinda overhyped and overrated sdsfsdsdsfsf no offense to ppl who like him im just like "i want that kid obliterated"
i actively dislike them sorry: SORRY sdfsdfdf it's so bland to say but i think im just soured about the work itself and its transformative works featuring him! nothing against the fans whenever i see his face im like "him? again?"
Free Space: the tibet adventure could easily be an adventure/romance movie like just thinking of the implications of dreaming of someone u havent seen in a long while and going by your gut that they are in danger... IT EATS ME how dedicated tintin is to his friendships in general but i will always think him and chang would develope something more.... (sighs) young love (cries)
Haddock! I just drew him from memory too
Tumblr media
Now I didnt score but heres a little explanation to each space:
they are soooo cool looking: I just really like how hes so scruffy looking and has that blue/black color scheme is very simple but effective :) i also just like sea themed characters in general and middle aged characters with Issues:tm:
everyone but me is wrong about them <3: NOT really true im just thinking of common mischaracterizations i used to see or seen in bad fanfiction bc otherwise i think theres a lot of ppl that really "get" haddock's essence
if they were real i would be afraid of them: half true, i would be more irritated by him than afraid of him. Like shut your mouth old man! type of way
they are like a blorbo to me: for a long time haddock was a blorbo to me, im not tht attached to the character anymore but i do think of him fondly
not as deep as they seem: i had to repeat this to myself bc even if he is plenty fleshed out in the actual works i think as fans we see More than there actually is.
free space: pretty sure ive said this before but i will always see haddock's personal journey as healing from the abusive rship he had with Alan Thompson (which was a catalyst to substance abuse) and seeing value in himself bc the people around him value him (his cat, tintin, prof calculus) basically that found family goodness lol

cannot stop thinking about the line in tintin in tibet about how haddock’s faith in tintin could move mountains…
like. tintin in tibet is already about friendship and belief and hope, and i really love how underneath the central narrative of tintin and chang, there is the quieter, parallel one of haddock and tintin. whereas nearly everyone remarks on tintin’s incredible faith in chang, haddock’s faith in tintin goes unmentioned until that final page. and i love how it casts light on all of their scenes throughout the story, and how it makes you realize that oh, this wasn’t a story about just One friendship in which one has immeasurable faith and belief in the other. it was about two.

i absolutely lost my mind discovering your blog this morning. i absolutely adore your style and your story/concept ideas SO MUCH. i love your love for chang and i adore how you draw him and just the love and care you have for the characters and their stories, their history-just everything. oh my god your art and animations are incredible thank you so much you made me so happy this morning 😭😭😭
Tumblr media
Thank you very much! I just feel like the Tintin universe has a lot of potential for deep dives. Herge often drew inspiration from the real world so that naturally brings a lot of richness - I'm just lucky to have the privilege of having nearly a century of hindsight and an Internet connection for my research!
also fun fact, I draw Chang the way I do for multiple reasons. I ramble so here's a Read More:
The first is just to update how Chinese people are depicted in this style - I'm Chinese myself (British Chinese) and while I do appreciate Chang's original appearance was basically modelled off a real guy and Herge really did try his best with depicting Chinese people sensitively I wouldn't be comfortable sticking exactly to those original portrayals (tbh it’s mostly the eyes and the skin colour I have an issue with, I liked the weird rubberiness of early Herge!). I also would like to update how the Japanese characters were portrayed too as man those designs are viscerally uncomfortable (like those characters were villainous because they were doing imperialism, not because they're Japanese man come on)
The second is - Chang is a fucking shapeshifter. I swear he looks different in every appearance he makes in official materials. You're telling me these are all the same guy??
Tumblr media
From left to right: Chang from a postage stamp that uses artwork from The Blue Lotus, the middle is from the 90s cartoon and the one on the right is from a... cheese sticker??? His nose, hair and face shapes change quite a bit
To get his design I mixed together the 90s cartoon version with the original. People have mentioned The Cheekbones Chang has in the 90s cartoon but I actually like how they give him a distinct shape, it helps differentiate his shape language from Tintin who's all round and soft.
For his young adult design I initially thought to reference Tintin in Tibet but he's so malnourished and close to death his portrayal there probably wasn't intended to represent what he's normally like. I just took my design for Chang and pushed the shapes more. I thought it would be cool for him to look pretty different when he grows up as a contrast to how static Tintin is as a character.
The third (and funniest) reason why I draw Chang the way I do is I actually look a lot like Blue Lotus Chang to a frightening degree, like to the point where it looks like my likeness was stolen 70 years before I even existed. I do not like thinking about my physical existence! I do not want to draw myself! No thank you!! my self insert is haddock if we’re being real

All right, here’s my personal timeline of Tintin Development, largely organized by volume.
Volume 1: Boy Reporter Travels World With Dog! No visible home or mention of home, serial adventures that result in no permanent change to his life.
Volume 2: Boy Reporter & Dog Have More Adventures! This time they always start from and end at home base (Labrador Road, Brussels), and though we’re not given much reason to become attached it does make Tintin a little more grounded. Similarly, we now have continuing bit characters--they’re more colleagues than friends (and more comedy than either), but they are a visibly recurring presence in Tintin’s life.
Volume 3: The Boy Reporter Gets a Friend?? The first two books look a lot like Volume 2, but Captain Haddock is here and preparing to break the “friendship of circumstance” mold--as seen in the third book, where the adventure is started by their friendship instead of the other way around. Tintin is going out of his way to socialize with someone?? Tintin and Captain Haddock apparently REGULARLY HANG OUT?? UNPRECEDENTED.
Volume 4: Boy Reporter’s Friend Acquires More Friends--look, Captain Haddock has the Adopting Instinct. That’s just a fact. Admitting that Professor Calculus gets some of the credit for buying Marlinspike, the fact remains that the Captain ended up permanently adding to his surrogate family a man he’d only met earlier that book. (And who he frequently couldn’t stand.) The only reason Calculus is a bigger presence in Tintin’s life than, say, Alembick is because Captain Haddock made them both His People. The three of them spend this volume A) getting the Captain a home big enough to hold the whole cast and B) generally Being Important To Each Other.
Volume 5: Boy Reporter Functions Within A Community. Here the stories are a little less easy for me to lump together, but Land of Black Gold is BRIMMING with Tintin’s continuing connections--Captain Haddock having to call himself out of the story just emphasizes that A) they’re close enough that his first move on being drafted is to let Tintin know and B) that Herge had to ship him out in the first few pages to make Solo Tintin at all believable--and, of course, the premise of the Moon books is just “if one of us is leaving the planet I guess we’re all leaving the planet.” Beautiful.
Volume 6: Boy Reporter Now Officially Adopted. This one opens with Tintin living at Marlinspike, no explanation, and I love it. He’s part of a household now. Each story here opens with the Marlinspike Family being domestic, until Adventure shows up--and then Tintin and Captain Haddock go through it together.
Tintin in Tibet, though, really deserves its own point here. It has Tintin reconnecting with a Volume 1 friend, bringing the changes in his life into stark relief; it has him pulling Captain Haddock into danger more blatantly than any other story, also emphasizing the bonds he has now; and it’s one of the bleakest stories out there, with Tintin in a darker place and everyone almost dying repeatedly.
It’s ALSO the last time we see Tintin running into danger of his own initiative...
Volume 7: Boy Reporter Has A Home (And Would Like To Keep It, Thank You). While Tintin still copes well with whatever situation he finds himself in, of course, these stories are remarkable because he really does have to find himself in trouble--he’s not looking for it at all. Plots range from “Everybody Stays Home” to “It Was Supposed To Be A Normal Plane Flight” to “Tintin Would REALLY LIKE Everybody To Stay Home”. And I think looking at that in relation to Tintin in Tibet is FASCINATING. He’s had a priority shift...and it makes sense, honestly. It’s harder to run headlong into danger when you know what you’re risking, huh?
In summary: Boy Reporter Has Adventures, Forms Real Relationships, And Finds Himself Maturing In Ways He Didn’t Know He Needed To.
(Also I very much love Captain Haddock.)

More Details from Tintin’s Apartment
Objects I noticed in 2011! Tintin’s apartment. On top of obvious newspaper clippings, a clutch of Easter Eggs + just some domestic things.
- World Organization of Scout Movements 1948 Jamboree Flag - Trophy (maybe from his scouting days?) - Radio, referencing Ham Radio hobby at the beginning of The Blue Lotus - Key to the City of Chicago with photograph copy of the panel of the parade from the end of Tintin in America - Arumbaya fetish statue - Separate photographs of the Maharaja of Gaipajama, an Elephant, Tibetan mountain - Blue Lotus vase - Oddly, a painting that’s a copy of the panel showing the Unicorn for the first time. Presumably in the movie version it’s a different ship - Photograph of the Emir Ben Kalish Ezab - Coffee bean grinder and oven top coffee maker - Tribal masks, shields, and a whole spear????? - Car calendar - Vintage map of Brussels - Box of English brand matches wikipedia is telling me are colloquially called “the smoker’s match” but maybe he just uses them casually - Also matchbox labeled “The Tree Trees” which internet is telling me is a Christian parable - On his DESK a framed photo of the gorilla from Black Island oh my god - Alligator statue paperweight - Novel “From Here to Eternity” which is about American Troops stationed in Hawaii during WWII - Book “The Voyage of the Lucky Dragon” about the Japanese Tuna fishing boat that became victims of atomic radiation from American tests a Bikini Atoll - Scroll with Chinese calligraphy which I can’t translate, but I do see his name written there - Skis - Matryoshka dolls - Clock, red armchair and blue floor jug from The Shooting Star - Painting of yak on the wall, referencing Tintin in Tibet - A collage of tacked up pictures of Snowy awwwww - Book “Russian for Scientists”
Sidenote: I just love how the movie made him such a messy bitch, very validating, you go Tintin. Unfortunately with HD still couldn’t see detail on a lot of the books/the writing on his corkboard. Still, there’s so much character in his apartment, we’d be able to tell exactly who Tintin is even if we didn’t know anything about the stories. I really love it and the WETA team did a great job.

The other night I was quite disturbed thinking of those women in my mind  and after a lot of LoTR lore-related content  I decided to draw again. Quite naturally some scenes came, and for quite a long time now I wanted to draw better scenery, one horizontal and one vertical, closer to comic-strips (my first love when I started to really draw). Some story started to emerge. Of course it still has many links to LoTR or the Hobbit for now, but things will evolve.
On the upper left is a company passing through a perillous pass, like Caradhras but also with something himalayan (Tintin in Tibet, damn you again !) so I included the Cross and the three eerie black stones from an ancient evil time with tibetan prayers hung on them.
At the bottom left the company departing Junkerland (Germany) to reach the wild unknown East. Their guide is the Grapse Corpse, somewhat close to a nazgul in design but assuming a more Gandalf role (’thought this was funny...), while Thorin might has been replaced with that asian girl (reminiscent about this taiwanese choucroute I was whining about here for some times now, snob, snob, poor me, blablabla, same old shit), the dwarves with the black crime syndicate of the mandarins from Regenwelt (Rainworld) and Bilbo is close to that “female Bilbo” you could see everywhere on reddit, which I found really cute. All those characters appeared earlier on this blog, first independantly, but now they’re starting to share some story together.
On the right I wanted to pratice something vertical. The scene where Elrond reads the hidden runes under the moonlight came directly. But instead here is a dark ritual, almost satanic, under the dready eyes of the black prophets (the very ones on the ‘Repentless’ cover album from Slayer). The priestess might be like that girl from the US/Belgian one-woman BM band, Hulder. The city underneath is closer to Petra, Jordania and the François Place’s letter T country depiction (Land of the Troglodyts) than to Rivendell. Far, far away there ain’t no Erebor but that polynesian island where the evil Tonga-Hiti had been burried for over a millenia.
Korean words should be OK but chinese characters still suck as usual.
