A Guide to Historically Accurate Regency-Era Names
Tumblr media
I recently received a message from a historical romance writer asking if I knew any good resources for finding historically accurate Regency-era names for their characters.
Not knowing any off the top of my head, I dug around online a bit and found there really isn’t much out there. The vast majority of search results were Buzzfeed-style listicles which range from accurate-adjacent to really, really, really bad.
I did find a few blog posts with fairly decent name lists, but noticed that even these have very little indication as to each name’s relative popularity as those statistical breakdowns really don't exist.
I began writing up a response with this information, but then I (being a research addict who was currently snowed in after a blizzard) thought hey - if there aren’t any good resources out there why not make one myself?
As I lacked any compiled data to work from, I had to do my own data wrangling on this project. Due to this fact, I limited the scope to what I thought would be the most useful for writers who focus on this era, namely - people of a marriageable age living in the wealthiest areas of London.
So with this in mind - I went through period records and compiled the names of 25,000 couples who were married in the City of Westminster (which includes Mayfair, St. James and Hyde Park) between 1804 to 1821.
So let’s see what all that data tells us…
To begin - I think it’s hard for us in the modern world with our wide and varied abundance of first names to conceive of just how POPULAR popular names of the past were.
If you were to take a modern sample of 25-year-old (born in 1998) American women, the most common name would be Emily with 1.35% of the total population. If you were to add the next four most popular names (Hannah, Samantha, Sarah and Ashley) these top five names would bring you to 5.5% of the total population. (source: Social Security Administration)
If you were to do the same survey in Regency London - the most common name would be Mary with 19.2% of the population. Add the next four most popular names (Elizabeth, Ann, Sarah and Jane) and with just 5 names you would have covered 62% of all women.
To hit 62% of the population in the modern survey it would take the top 400 names.
The top five Regency men’s names (John, William, Thomas, James and George) have nearly identical statistics as the women’s names.
I struggled for the better part of a week with how to present my findings, as a big list in alphabetical order really fails to get across the popularity factor and also isn’t the most tumblr-compatible format. And then my YouTube homepage recommended a random video of someone ranking all the books they’d read last year - and so I present…
The Regency Name Popularity Tier List
The Tiers
S+ - 10% of the population or greater. There is no modern equivalent to this level of popularity. 52% of the population had one of these 7 names.
S - 2-10%. There is still no modern equivalent to this level of popularity. Names in this percentage range in the past have included Mary and William in the 1880s and Jennifer in the late 1970s (topped out at 4%).
A - 1-2%. The top five modern names usually fall in this range. Kids with these names would probably include their last initial in class to avoid confusion. (1998 examples: Emily, Sarah, Ashley, Michael, Christopher, Brandon.)
B - .3-1%. Very common names. Would fall in the top 50 modern names. You would most likely know at least 1 person with these names. (1998 examples: Jessica, Megan, Allison, Justin, Ryan, Eric)
C - .17-.3%. Common names. Would fall in the modern top 100. You would probably know someone with these names, or at least know of them. (1998 examples: Chloe, Grace, Vanessa, Sean, Spencer, Seth)
D - .06-.17%. Less common names. In the modern top 250. You may not personally know someone with these names, but you’re aware of them. (1998 examples: Faith, Cassidy, Summer, Griffin, Dustin, Colby)
E - .02-.06%. Uncommon names. You’re aware these are names, but they are not common. Unusual enough they may be remarked upon. (1998 examples: Calista, Skye, Precious, Fabian, Justice, Lorenzo)
F - .01-.02%. Rare names. You may have heard of these names, but you probably don’t know anyone with one. Extremely unusual, and would likely be remarked upon. (1998 examples: Emerald, Lourdes, Serenity, Dario, Tavian, Adonis)
G - Very rare names. There are only a handful of people with these names in the entire country. You’ve never met anyone with this name.
H - Virtually non-existent. Names that theoretically could have existed in the Regency period (their original source pre-dates the early 19th century) but I found fewer than five (and often no) period examples of them being used in Regency England. (Example names taken from romance novels and online Regency name lists.)
Just to once again reinforce how POPULAR popular names were before we get to the tier lists - statistically, in a ballroom of 100 people in Regency London: 80 would have names from tiers S+/S. An additional 15 people would have names from tiers A/B and C. 4 of the remaining 5 would have names from D/E. Only one would have a name from below tier E.

# Men were sometimes given a family surname (most often their mother's or grandmother's maiden name) as their first name - the most famous example of this being Fitzwilliam Darcy. If you were to combine all surname-based first names as a single 'name' this is where the practice would rank.
*Rank as a given name, not a nickname
+If you count Mary Ann as a separate name from Mary - Mary would remain in S+ even without the Mary Anns included
~Primarily used by people of Irish descent
^Primarily used by people of Scottish descent
>Primarily used by people of Welsh descent
I was going to continue on and write about why Regency-era first names were so uniform, discuss historically accurate surnames, nicknames, and include a little guide to finding 'unique' names that are still historically accurate - but this post is already very, very long, so that will have to wait for a later date.
If anyone has any questions/comments/clarifications in the meantime feel free to message me.
Methodology notes: All data is from marriage records covering six parishes in the City of Westminster between 1804 and 1821. The total sample size was 50,950 individuals.
I chose marriage records rather than births/baptisms as I wanted to focus on individuals who were adults during the Regency era rather than newborns. I think many people make the mistake when researching historical names by using baby name data for the year their story takes place rather than 20 to 30 years prior, and I wanted to avoid that. If you are writing a story that takes place in 1930 you don’t want to research the top names for 1930, you need to be looking at 1910 or earlier if you are naming adult characters.
I combined (for my own sanity) names that are pronounced identically but have minor spelling differences: i.e. the data for Catherine also includes Catharines and Katherines, Susannah includes Susannas, Phoebe includes Phebes, etc.
The compound 'Mother's/Grandmother's maiden name used as first name' designation is an educated guesstimate based on what I recognized as known surnames, as I do not hate myself enough to go through 25,000+ individuals and confirm their mother's maiden names. So if the tally includes any individuals who just happened to be named Fitzroy/Hastings/Townsend/etc. because their parents liked the sound of it and not due to any familial relations - my bad.
I did a small comparative survey of 5,000 individuals in several rural communities in Rutland and Staffordshire (chosen because they had the cleanest data I could find and I was lazy) to see if there were any significant differences between urban and rural naming practices and found the results to be very similar. The most noticeable difference I observed was that the S+ tier names were even MORE popular in rural areas than in London. In Rutland between 1810 and 1820 Elizabeths comprised 21.4% of all brides vs. 15.3% in the London survey. All other S+ names also saw increases of between 1% and 6%. I also observed that the rural communities I surveyed saw a small, but noticeable and fairly consistent, increase in the use of names with Biblical origins.
Sources of the records I used for my survey:
Ancestry.com. England & Wales Marriages, 1538-1988 [database on-line].
Ancestry.com. Westminster, London, England, Church of England Marriages and Banns, 1754-1935 [database on-line].

Dearest Gentle Reader, The fallout of Edmund Bridgerton and Thomas Lovelace, occurred years before their respective marriages, before the birth of their children, and long before the first of this author’s society papers was published. Many have, of course, suggested theories as to why the 8th Viscount Bridgerton, and the 13th Duke of Manchester never saw eye to eye, but as neither ever made public comments regarding the issue, we still remain in doubt. The sins of the father will be visited upon the son, and such is the case for Hector Lovelace and Anthony Bridgerton. From Eton to Oxford, both carried on the grudges of their fathers, and thus became known as deathly rivals. It causes one to wonder why? And over what? Sadly, dear reader, much like yourself, this author remains in the dark. It was only after the tragic death of Edmund Bridgerton, that tensions tremendously subsided. Occasionally, during gatherings, one might even notice the exchange of a polite nod between the new Viscount and the Heir of the Manchester Dukedom. It is a common jape amongst chattering mamas that a Lovelace-Bridgerton marriage would finally put the two families senseless feud to bed. While there had been hope for a match between Daphne Bridgerton and the third Lovelace son, Mister Lewis Lovelace, it was soon eliminated after the announcement of Mister Lovelace’s betrothal to Lady Cassandra Gray. There remains Francesca and Hyacinth Bridgerton, who should by all accounts be considered rather odd matches for either remaining unmarried Lovelace Brother, given their vast age differences, and with Eloise Bridgerton's disinterest in matters of love and marriage, there is little possibility for a union between a Bridgerton Sister and a Lovelace Brother.
This author proposes an alternative; perhaps instead of a Lovelace Brother, we must turn our eyes to the sole Lovelace sister, the newly debuted, Lady Juliette Lovelace, and the second Bridgerton Brother, Mister Benedict Bridgerton, who seemed to by all accounts have become rather smitten with Miss Lovelace, much to the displeasure of his brother, the Viscount. I am certain those of you who have not had the pleasure of making Miss Lovelace’s acquaintance before, during, or after her debut must have at the very least heard from a matchmaking mama, of her genteel mannerism, and very, very large dowry. Thus far, the only thing standing in the way of gentlemen vying for her hand in marriage has been her rakish twin brother, Mister John Lovelace, and his rather foul habit of publicly mocking her suitors. Perhaps it must also be mentioned that this season the Duke and Duchess of Manchester have sent their youngest son away on a diplomatic trip, so as to not hinder their dear daughter’s pursuits of finding a husband.  Time is of the essence, bachelor's of Mayfair. I urge you all to try and succeed in winning the heart of Miss Juliette Lovelace before her meddlesome brother’s return from France. In the meantime, this author continues to ponder if Miss Juliette Lovelace will find her Romeo in Mister Benedict Bridgerton or not. The answer will be one I shall certainly enjoy uncovering ...

I already have a short list of gents tailors in Regency London, however I have no idea what the New York equivalent might be. Anyone have ideas?
And for any Regency AU writers, here's a helpful list of Saville Row 19th century tailors!

I love all of your work. I keep trying to imagine dad tommy from fic where his little girl comes home declaring she's got a boyfriend, and him panicking because she's like 6 and he can't scare the little boy without having his wife (the reader) chewing his head for it.
Omg thank you 😊
Okay for context, Florence was born in 1929 and is reader and Tommy’s youngest child (and his favorite of all four).
And i felt the prompt went better by being from Tommy's pov to focus more on Tommy and Florence’s relationship.
Other shelby children: Charlie and Gabriel (the Shelby Boys) and Diane (Diane Elizabeth)
Six years old
Gif by @samcoving
Tumblr media
"Who's your new friend, Flora?" Tommy asked his youngest as he kissed the top of her head and then took his place at the head of the dinner table.
Frankly, Tommy thought it wholly unnecessary that they were using the large dining room they use to host gatherings instead of the more private family dining room.
But Florence Eleanor Shelby had demanded a dinner party for tonight, so he dressed for dinner and promised his wife not to overreact when he learned why.
A promise his wife had bet three shillings he'd break before the first course.
"My boyfriend." She beamed at him.
It took everything in him not to spit the water he had been drinking. He was going to need a drink, but Y/N had a strict don't drink in front of the children or I'll have your guts for garters, or so help me God, Thomas Michael Shelby policy.
"Hello, sir, I'm Andrew Roberts, pleasure to meet you." The little boy said courteously and waited until Tommy acknowledged him to resume eating.
Because in the pantomime that is life, his little girl attached herself to the son of Billy Kimber’s accountant.
Can't scare the boy, can't be rude or else Roberts will see it as a provocation, so he acts like this is just another friend his favorite child has brought over.
"I'm gonna marry him, daddy." Six-year old Florence tells him and you make it worse by indulging her in this fantasy.
The last thing he wants is for one of his children to marry young like his parents and the John did.
"But the girl is six," his wife’s says, "you're worrying for nothing."
"You're wrong, love," he tells her later once the dinner is over.
Six turns to eleven and she and Andrew remain thick as thieves.
She was bold, bolder than her best friend, the Princess Margaret, and Andy Roberts is shy and cautious like Tommy can assume his father was.
Calls him her boyfriend still, and he reminds Y/N that its way past being a phase.
"They're children, Tom" she shakes her head even as she does some last minutes things on the children's matching costumes.
Eleven turns to sixteen and Andrew nervously asks him for permission to ask Florence to a dance.
He has a shotgun on his lap when he gives the teenage boy his answer.
Florence locks herself in her room in tears and his wife shakes her head. "There's no harm in a dance. If you don't let her go, she'll just escape through the window and steal the car again."
So he listens to his wife and the next morning he apologized to his daughter and made her promise she wouldn't do anything stupid.
Sixteen turns to twenty three and they've been featured in everything from Tabloids to Time Magazine as the United Kingdom's entrepreneurial power couple.
Florence had invited them to a dinner party at her place in Mayfair. She had news and she had made him swear on the lives of his five grandchildren (by his three older children) not to overreact.
"Mummy, Daddy, I invited you today because Andy and I have news." She's nervous, but doesn't show it. His little girl had taken over the family businesses (the legal ones)and blossomed into a strong, independent and beautiful woman like her mother.
He knew what was coming.
Thomas Shelby had cornered Andrew Roberts after he bought the engagement ring.
But Roberts had sworn him to secrecy until the tine was right.
"Out with it, girl, your mother's not getting any younger." He tries to lighten the mood at the cost of his wife subtlely kicking him ubder the table.
"We're getting married!" They try to say it in unison, but nervous Andrew had said it first.
"You knew, Tommy?" his wife asked him suprised.
"Known since she was six."

The Hunger Games characters have some unique names based on many cultures we've lived in today.
What's your favourite character names from THG world? What's their names meaning?
Bonus questions :
If you're a fanfic writer writing about characters who lives in Panem, what's their name gonna be?
If you're a reader, what's a name you read in a THG fanfic that stuck with you?
Thank you, @curiousnonny
@wistfulweaverwoman has an AMAZING breakdown of Peeta's first and last name and the symbolism behind it. Please go read that post. I'm kind of obsessed with it.
Suzanne pays attention to where names come from, so for THG and her other series, The Underland Chronicles, fanfic authors have guidance in where to get names. For THG, Capitol gets their names from Latin/Roman influence. The Districts largely get theirs from their industry (Wiress, Thresh, Cashmere, Bobbin, Tanner, Reaper, etc.). District 2 seems to follow the Capitol with Latin/Roman influences (Cato, Sejanus, Marcus, etc.). The Covey get theirs from a name in a ballad and a color (which is explained in TBOSAS).
For District 12, quite a few Seam characters get their name from nature (Katniss, Gale, Primrose, Posy, Hazelle, Lil short for Lily, Spruce), while it's been my headcanon that the merchants get theirs from derivatives of Biblical names. I always associate Peeta with Peter before pita bread, Delly=Delilah, Madge=Margaret, Maysilee/Mayfair=Mary and though they're Seam, Sae=Sarah/Sariah, Thom=Thomas.
Long, long, long time ago before Peeta's brothers had the fanon names Rye and (some other bread-related name) I used the names Jam and Jonah to make them...Peter, James, and John. This was before Mockingjay released and I'd been hoping his brothers would live and they'd have a role in the rebellion, making the trio comparison apt. I'm still attached to these names though, even if his brothers didn't really do anything. Also in the now-deleted fic I wrote of Mr. and Mrs. Everdeen getting together, I named Mrs. Everdeen Ruth, after the Ruth in the Bible that left her family and people to live and care for her mother-in-law after her husband died. The story reminded me of Mrs. Everdeen leaving her family to marry Mr. Everdeen. I don't think anyone else has this more Biblically-oriented view of the townies of D12's names. And it could just be that a lot of English names are derived from Biblical names as it is and I'm stretching. But merchants do have a distinct lack of nature names in comparison to those from the Seam so I think there's something making their names distinct. A way of showing another divide between the two cultures in D12.

Thor Bridge
Most Holmes stories are "The Adventure of X". "The Problem of Thor Bridge", published in 1922 and forming part of the Case-book collection, is one of the exceptions. Others include "The Five Orange Pips", which is the full title.
This was originally published in two parts in The Strand, with a recap of the plot before the second part.
Cox & Co. was founded in 1758 as a military logistics company, getting money and other supplies to troops in India. Later Cox & Kings, the Indian company is now the process of liquidation after going bust in 2020, while the British arm is now a travel agent under the Abercrombie & Kent group.
The Family Herald was a weekly periodical that ran from 1843 to 1940.
The United States had 45 states in 1900; Utah had joined in 1896 and Oklahoma would be next in 1907. New Mexico and Arizona were the other two non-states at this time in the lower 48.
Senators were elected by state legislatures until 1912.
The city of Winchester is the county town of Hampshire and has been inhabited since before the Romans turned up. Traditionally seen as the capital of the old kingdom of Wessex - there was in fact no fixed capital, but it still was of major importance. Thomas Hardy's Tess of the d'Urbervilles takes place in a fictionalised "Wintonchester".
Winchester today hosts a Crown Court that sits in session all year round. HM Prison Winchester, built between 1846 and 1850, is still an active prison, although today male only. One of its most notable inmates was serial killer Rosemary West, who was held there during her trial.
Claridge's is a famous five-star hotel in Mayfair, frequented by celebrities and royals.
At the time, the British definition of "billion" was a million million i.e. a modern trillion. A milliard was the term for a thousand million, but we now use the US definition.
Brazil had gained its independence in 1825, three years after declaring it. It had ousted its monarchy in 1889 and become a republic after a coup.

OC HALLOWEEN CHALLENGE 2023 ; day twenty-one - I want to play a game
(Until Dawn AU)
Thomas Mayfair definitely didn’t mean for the prank to go the way it did. Actually, he wasn’t even really involved. He was just the stepbrother brought along, but he liked Lane. He tried going after her when she ran into the cold winter air but his stepsister Jasmine stopped him, assuming she’d make it to the other cabin and he back in the morning. They never saw her again. A year later, he’s dating Rory and they get a message from Dave to come back. And he only came back because of Rory. But the night proves to hold more than just a reunion between old friends.

Hi! I just listened to the Match 6th, 2016: #LGBTfansdeservebetter and the spring slaughter. Do you have the list of all the characters that were killed? I could only think of Pussey from OITNB and Charlie from Supernatural. I wonder what other fandoms I was either in or am in now that are on that list.
Love your podcast by the way. Brings back a lot of memories and stuff I hadn't even realized I was a part of until you guys mention it. This is amazing! My mom loved the Star Trek one and it led to me finding out my mom used to get the Battlestar Galactica Zine in the 70s. Keep up the good work! Thanks! Love ya!
Thank you so much -- how cool that your mom used to get a zine! If she still has any copies, you should totally scan them for Fanlore.org :)
The characters killed in the Spring Slaughter included:
Zora (The Shannara Chronicles)
Rose (Jane the Virgin)
Carla (Code Black)
Julie Mao (The Expanse)
Ash (Janet King)
Lexa (The 100)
Kira (The Magicians)
Denise (The Walking Dead)
Nora and Mary Louise (The Vampire Diaries)
Mimi Whiteman (Empire)
Camilla (Empire)
Cara Thomas (Marcella)
Pamela Clayborne (Saints & Sinners)
Felicity (The Catch)
Bridey (The Family)
Mayfair (Blindspot)
Root (Person of Interest)
Poussey Washington (Orange is the New Black)
I (V) would say that the ones that had/have the biggest transformative fandom followings, besides Lexa and Poussey, were probably Root from POI and Zora from The Shannara Chronicles -- they were the two other characters I had seen cross my dash with petitions and stuff when they were killed off. It's also definitely worth noting just how many of these dead WLW characters are also WOC.

Tumblr media
Mayfair, London, 1919
Liv is sitting in her flat in London when Ayla rushes in.
"Morning, Liv," she greets her, and Liv looks up from her tea. "I've got something for you," she says, waving an envelope in front of her face.
"What's this?" asks Liv, reaching for the envelope.
"A booking. From Birmingham. Very generous, if you ask me." Liv looks at Ayla questioningly. A booking from Birmingham? What could that be? She quickly opens the envelope and begins to read.
Dear Miss James,
We take the liberty of contacting you directly.
We would like to book you for a performance at the official ceremony for the licensing of our betting slip. Of course, we will generously compensate you for this performance. Please find the amount on the enclosed sheet.
Please also find the date, time and place on the enclosed sheet.
Hoping to hear from you.
Shelby Company Ltd. Thomas Shelby
"Are you fucking kidding me?" Liv mumbles to herself and takes the enclosed sheet.
The amount is indeed very generous, but anger spreads through Liv. How dare they! And how can her own brother be involved in this? Sure, she hasn't seen Will for a long time. He and Liv have been distant since the war, but still, she can hardly believe her eyes.
"Well what do you think?" asks Ayla, who has now also helped herself to a cup of tea.
"I think you should organise train tickets to Birmingham for us."
"Great! You'll take the booking request then?"
"No, I won't. But I will kick someone's fucking arse!"
Small Heath, Birmingham, 1919
The next day Liv gets off the train in Birmingham. Her anger has not subsided. If anything, it has grown. She calls a taxi for Ayla and herself, and then they are driven to Small Heath. Not straight to Watery Lane, of course, the taxi drivers don't dare, but close enough. Liv briefly looks at her watch. They must be at the Garrison. So she walks purposefully in the direction of the pub. On the street, she can hear people whispering.
"That's Olivia James." "Is that Liv? What's she doing here?"
Ayla tries convulsively to keep up with Liv. "Liv… Wait," she says out of breath as Liv stops outside the pub.
"I'm sorry for what you're about to witness," Liv says, then yanks open the doors. Behind the bar, Harry immediately looks up and his eyes grow wide.
"Miss James?" he asks in surprise, and then Liv spots Grace. She stares at them angrily. Grace tries to stop Liv just as she pulls open the doors to the small parlour.
"You can't go in there!" Liv, however, doesn't listen.
All eyes shoot to her. Arthur, John, Polly, Will and Tommy stare at her.
"Liv?" asks Will, confused, but Liv walks purposefully towards Tommy.
She punches him several times in the chest, pushing him backwards. He is not prepared for this, which is why he staggers backwards a step.
"Are you actually taking the piss out of me completely?!" she shouts angrily.
None of the other Shelbys intervene and Tommy, too, just lets her freak out. They all know better than to stand in the way of a raging Olivia James.
"What the fuck, huh?!" she exclaims, taking out the letter. "Fuck, I knew there was something different about you when I saw you Cheltenham, but this is really a new fucking low, even for you Tommy!" She shoves him again. "First, you tell me you don't care about me, and then something like this? What the fuck is wrong with you?!" yells Liv, looking Tommy in the eye with rage.
She crumples up the letter and throws it at Tommy. "I will now take the liberty of telling you directly. You are a fucking bastard Thomas Shelby!" Liv lashes out and slaps Tommy across the face.
There is silence all around. No one would normally dare to do something like that, but with Liv it surprises no one.
She snorts angrily before turning on her heel and storming out. She drags a completely confused and uncomfortable Ayla with her and then pushes the doors out of the garrison open.
Outside, Liv stops for a moment and then takes a deep breath. "What the hell was that?" asks Ayla, still confused, but Liv gives her no answer.
Just as she is about to light a smoke, she is grabbed by both arms and a bag is pulled over her head. Her cigarettes fall out of her mouth.
"Hey!" protests Liv, trying to free herself but her hands are held back.
"Easy, Miss James, or we'll kill your friend right here and now."
Meanwhile at the Garrison, Tommy's brothers, his aunt and Will look at him questioningly. "What have you done now?" asks Polly then, taking a drag from her smoke. Tommy looks at her and presses his eyebrows together.
"Honestly… I don't know," he says and John picks up the crumpled letter.
"What's this?" Tommy snatches it from John's hand, unknots the paper and reads the lines.
"Fuck," he curses, then runs out of Garrison.
"Liv?!" he shouts, looking around, but he can't spot Liv anywhere. Arthur, Will and John follow him.
"What the fuck is going on Tommy?" asks Arthur.
"Liv received a letter, with a booking request from Shelby Company Ltd," he says and the three others look at him in confusion. He spots the unlit smoke on the floor and picks it up.
"We certainly didn't send her that letter. So it must have been someone else," Tommy says.
"Fuck," Will now curses. "Campbell…"
Liv notices herself being tied to a chair as they finally pull the bag off her head. Next to her, she spots Ayla looking around with fear filled eyes. They have also tied her to a chair and gagged her. In front of her, Liv discovers two men looking at her.
Hateful, she looks at them and spits at their feet.
"Pretty cheeky, don't you think Fred?" one asks and the other nods before coming towards her. He grabs her by the chin and scrutinises her face.
"But no less pretty because of it." He lets go of Liv.
"Now then, my little songbird. Where are the weapons?" he asks and Liv frowns.
"What fucking weapons?" she asks, squeezing her eyes shut.
"The ones your friend is hiding."
"What friend?"
"Well, that Peaky devil. Thomas Shelby." Now Liv starts to laugh.
"Are you fucking stupid?" she asks. The man, however, doesn't seem to find this funny at all, because he slaps her face with the flat of his hand. Liv sees stars in front of her eyes for a moment. Ayla tries to scream, but Liv only hears her whimper.
"That's the end of being cheeky," he says sternly and leans down to Liv. "Where are the weapons?" he asks again.
"What fucking weapons? How the fuck am I supposed to know where Tommy hides his fucking weapons? We haven't been in contact for years!" The man looks at his accomplice and then back at Liv.
"Well then, let's find out if he still cares about you," he says and pulls out a knife.
Liv tries to hide her fear as best she can. The man takes Liv's hair and cuts out a strand. Then he presses it against Liv's cheek. When he takes it away again, Liv sees the blood on it. It seems her cheek split open when the man hit her. He smiles confidently before the two leave the room, leaving Liv and Ayla alone.
Gritting his teeth, Tommy looks at the strand of hair in front of him. Blood is on it. They have her. They have Liv. And they're using her against him.
"Fuck!" he exclaims, banging his fist on his desk. At that moment his aunt enters his office. Concerned, she looks at the strand of hair.
"You have to do something Tommy. And you have to do it now. If they hurt her… You'd never forgive yourself."
"Oh yeah, you think I don't fucking know that myself eh?!" he shouts angrily, glaring at his aunt.
"Just give them the guns and get Liv home," she says sternly and Tommy looks her in the eye.
"It's not fucking that easy Pol! No," he says, shaking his head. "I have to find her myself." With these words Tommy leaves the office. Shaking her head, Polly looks after her nephew.
Liv and Ayla have been sitting in the dark room for what feels like an eternity now. It is stuffy and damp and Liv suspects they must probably be somewhere near the docks. n an old warehouse. She feels her arms beginning to ache from the position and she puts her head back. Why on earth did she come back here? She knows the answer to that all too well, of course. Tommy fucking Shelby. He just still gets under her skin and after so many years. And he knows how to drive her up the wall.
When Liv almost falls asleep, she hears the door open and is immediately wide awake again. She looks ahead and an older man with a moustache and bowler hat approaches her. She squints her eyes and watches his every move. He approaches Liv and then stands about two metres in front of her, eyeing her.
"Miss James. It's an honour to meet you. I'm Inspector Campbell." Liv raises her head arrogantly.
"I wish I could say the same to you," Liv returns and Campbell's lips twitch. He walks up to her and scrutinises her face. He lifts a hand and briefly grabs the laceration she has on her cheek.
"Sorry about my men." Liv jerks her head away from him.
"Sure you are," she says sarcastically. "You're making a big mistake here Inspector. I have friends. Friends in high places," Liv then says with narrowed eyes.
Campbell clasps his hands behind his back. He pulls up a chair and sits down opposite her. "If you want to use that to refer to Mr Mosley, don't worry. I know from reasonable sources that you two haven't seen each other in a couple of months and besides, you're not the only one with friends, Miss James."
He puts on a smug smile. "It would be a lot easier for you and for me if you would cooperate with us Miss James. Then you won't get hurt and we can finally wrap things up here and Shelby will get the punishment he deserves."
"I don't fucking know where the weapons are! How many times do I have to say this? Tommy and I are not friends! Not for years!" Now Campbell smiles even wider.
"I know," he says and Liv looks him in the eye in surprise. "You're not here to tell me where the guns are either."
"Then why else?! Fuck! Your men…"
"I know, I know. They're not exactly the brightest candles on the cake, but they're useful."
"What do you want from me?", Liv then spits out.
"As I said before, I have very reliable sources Miss James. And they have informed me that you are still one of the most important things in Thomas Shelby's life."
"So you want me to be the decoy?" Campbell nods curtly.
"You're very clever, I'll give you that. Shelby will do everything he can to track you down. He'll also know by now that I'm behind your invitation and he'll try to make a deal."
"You want to trade me for the guns? You're really fucking dumber than you look. Tommy doesn't care about me anymore." Campbell's smile on his face doesn't go away.
"And I think you're wrong on that very point, Miss James." With those words, Campbell stands up and walks towards the door. "You watch her. She is not to be touched, do you understand?!" he says to his men and then walks out of the room.
Liv, still bound, stares at the floor in front of her. They have now also gagged her to keep her quiet. Again and again she hears Ayla whimpering beside her. Suddenly one of the two men stands up and comes towards Liv.
"What are you doing?" the other asks, but he ignores him.
"She's quite pretty, isn't she?" he asks as he stands in front of Liv and takes her chin in his hand. "I bet she's a good fuck. I heard she was Tommy Shelby's girl."
"Come on, leave her alone. Campbell told us not to touch her."
"Like he'd find out," the other says then, eyeing Liv's body.
"I'm just wondering what's hidden underneath." He reaches for her dress and begins to pull it up. Liv now begins to whimper as well. They can hit her all they want from her, but she definitely doesn't want to be touched where it doesn't belong.
"Don't do that Titus," the other now says again, slapping the latter's hand away.
"What's the matter Fred? Haven't you ever wondered what a superstar looks like under all those clothes?"
Again Titus reaches for Liv, but Fred tries to dissuade him again and they wrestle for a moment, sending Liv flying to the floor, chair and all. She feels her elbow hurt and probably bleeding, but she doesn't care because the fall has caused the cloth in front of her mouth to slip.
"You know what? Do whatever you want!", Fred then gives up and looks down at Liv before turning away. Titus grins and then leans down to Liv.
"Please," she pleads and a tear runs down her cheek.
"Shut up," he just says sternly and slaps her face again. Liv now tastes blood in her mouth, but she doesn't care, because she notices his hands on her dress again. She tries to escape from him somehow, but it is difficult when you are tied to a chair.
"Maybe I'll just knock you unconscious and you'll stop struggling. Well, what do you think of that?" he then asks and grabs her neck. He squeezes and immediately it cuts off Liv's air.
Her eyes grow wide and just as she thinks she is losing consciousness, she hears a gunshot. The grip on her neck loosens and then Titus falls backwards. She feels his wet blood on her face and then tears her eyes open, but her vision is blurred.
She can make out screaming and then another gunshot. Liv is still on the floor. She can just see some legs in front of her, but then she can't manage to stay awake.
When Tommy flings open the door and he, Arthur, John and Will rush into the room, he is almost breathless. The image that presents itself shocks him deeply. A man is bent over Liv, who is lying on the floor tied to a chair, and is choking her.
Tommy does not hesitate for long. He raises his gun and shoots the man in the head. No one touches Liv like that. No one. Next to Liv he sees another young woman, also tied to a chair, crying. While the others take care of the second man in the room, Tommy runs towards Liv.
He pulls the dead body away from her, but he quickly realises that Liv is no longer conscious. He quickly unties her and then takes her in his arms to examine her. She has a laceration on her cheek, a split lip and bruises are already forming where the bastard choked her. Anger rises in Tommy. How could he let this happen to her.
"Liv!" he then hears Will shout, kneeling on the floor next to Tommy.
"What's wrong with her? Is she still alive?" he asks quickly, checking her pulse. Relief rushes through him as he can feel it.
"We have to get her to Polly, Tommy!" he says then and Tommy looks Will in the eyes. They are the same eyes as Liv's, looking at him now with concern. Then he nods and lifts Liv up.
Arthur has meanwhile released Liv's escort, who throws herself gratefully around his neck, which seems to confuse Arthur slightly.

Robert Fraser in the Evening Standard, June 8 1967
Modern art: The currency between the financier and his son
This article appeared in the Evening Standard on June 8, 1967. It was part of a series on fathers and sons. Part 4 profiled the Fraser family, focusing on Lionel Fraser and Robert Fraser.
Tumblr media
The entire article is transcribed below the cut.
A Name to Live Up To, by Tom Pocock
Modern art: The currency between the financier and his son
The rebel son being so essential a stock figure in family lore it would seem that Robert Fraser has all the qualifications of a particularly fine specimen. Seldom can the worlds of father and son have been in such stunning contrast and seldom can father and son have seemed, to outsiders, such opposites.
Robert Fraser is the son of the later Lionel Fraser.
At 29, Robert Fraser is founder and proprietor of the Robert Fraser Gallery in Mayfair, the most avant garde, far-out art gallery in London.
Currently, he is awaiting an exhibition by Mr. Andy Warhol, the American experimental artist, which, it can safely be forecast, will be unlike anything yet seen in an art gallery, or, possibly, anywhere else.
Mr. Fraser has suffered a lot of publicity recently having been fined £20 under the Vagrancy Act of 1838 for exhibiting “obscene” drawings and collages by the American artist Jim Dine, whose work is represented at the Tate.
Mr. Fraser was duly credited in Time magazine’s memorable discovery of swinging London. Mr. Fraser’s scene is one to make British squares close their ranks. His father, who died two years ago, was a man for whom the inescapable adjective was “distinguished.” Tycoon was too vulgar a word for Lionel Fraser. A financier, who made money-making seem like high diplomacy, he ranked high among the City’s royalty.
A self-made man (his father was butler to Gordon Selfridge, the department store emperor) Lionel Fraser carried himself as if born to wealth and position.
His influence in banking, investment trusts, insurance and industry came primarily through Helbert Wagg, the merchant bankers, Thomas Tilling, the industrial holding company and Babcock and Wilcox, the engineers, but his photograph—a dignified face, white hair and an immaculate bow tie—often appeared on City pages in connection with anything from publishing to cars, take-overs to mergers.
Tragedy
The Fraser family was, and is, conventional in a prosperous and intelligent way. Living In Belgravia and, like a surprising number of their like, Christian Scientists, the Frasers lived a contented life until touched by tragedy.
Ten years ago the only daughter, Janet, a beautiful, vivid girl, who, at the age of 21, had been secretary to Sir William Haley, then editor of The Times, was killed with her fiancé in a road accident. Then at 69, Lionel Fraser died.
Robert Fraser's mother and his brother, a stockbroker, continue to lead the lives to which they were accustomed. But not Robert Fraser.
Robert Fraser's quick, delicate person is so different from his father’s stately presence; his accent, Anglo-American; his conversation, stream-of-consciousness.
“Did I rebel? I never thought of that. I just do what I like doing. That's what everyone tries to do. I try to avoid doing things that I don’t like. Did my father influence me? I don't think that parents do have influences—the best parents don’t have influences. I might be influenced by ideas but not by parents. I never thought heredity plays a great part except that you react against it. It’s environment that matters.”
Robert Fraser was first sent to a Christian Science school but “could not get attuned to it. I feel religious but not interested in religion.”
Then to Eton, “which is better than anywhere else because it is eccentric. But English boarding schools are insane. Education is teaching but you are not taught. In 15 years learning Latin I never heard anyone stop and say: ‘This is a beautiful poem.’ I'm glad I was educated, but it would have been nice to have been taught."
But, by what Robert Fraser would put down as environment, his father did influence him. Lionel Fraser was a patron of modern art and, as a trustee of the Tate Gallery did, in his son’s view “much to improve that stale atmosphere. Many American cities have better collections and Americans who hear about the Tate go there and ask: ‘What’s it all about?’
The dust
“My father wanted the Tate to shake off the dust and tried to align it with the present. But this is not so much an indictment of the Tate as of England. In England it takes time to change things.”
After Eton, Robert Fraser went to New York and joined the art scene. Five years ago, he returned to London and, with his father's encouragement, opened the gallery in Duke Street. Then, says Robert Fraser: “London was very boring. Suddenly, around 1964, it was all happening. An eruption, you know. A social revolution.
“What the Beatles call The Beautiful People. These people—these young artists, writers and musicians—these people are the privileged class now. They used to have no voice. Now they are blowing off the dust.
“All this youth paraphernalia came from here. These people are original. These ideas are mainly coming from England. New York is sterile, uncreative, l mean, you go to the States— they have a fantastic industry for everything: machine-guns, cosmetics, Lichtenstein paintings. It’s an industrial thing. The English give them the idea and they make a thing of it.”
Robert Fraser thinks that his father would have understood and enjoyed 1967 scene. “He was a Victorian but the best of the Victorians were like really important business people today: they had imagination. My father's mixed with some very conventional people but he never belonged to them. He would never do things because they had been done before. The Victorians were like that before the calcification began. My father was one of the few people in this country who liked new things. Most people distrust new things.”
Balance
The obvious differences between father and son seemed less important. And as Robert Fraser talked he sounded less like an arbiter of the arts but more like an adventurous tycoon. “Art dealing the way l do it needs a fine balance of judgement. Most dealers buy something because they know they can sell it at a profit. I back my own taste. I show what I like.”
Robert Fraser refuses to have what he likes labelled “because people love to be able to pigeonhole things. I like to keep people on edge. Anything new is uncomfortable. I like people coming into the gallery to feel uneasy. A picture that makes you happy now may have made people acutely uncomfortable when it was first painted.'” Currently he is thinking of forms of art-dealing outside the gallery, something that he cannot yet define but obviously something of which Mr. Warhol would approve.
“As art widens its scope,” he says, “so must galleries.” The next move is the Warhol exhibition. After that, perhaps films. The Fraser imaginatlon roams farther and farther out.
The son of the discreet financier then reveals another of his father’s traits. “Some people who meet me say that they didn't know there was a person called Robert Fraser. But they still came to the Robert Fraser Gallery because they knew they'd find a certain kind of thing. I liked that.”
I suspect Lionel Fraser would have liked that, too. It is called reputation.

With me being a huge Silence of the Lambs fan, you can imagine my surprise when I found out that Ted Levine (who played Buffalo Bill in the Silence film) was joining the Mayfair Witches cast.
I've never read the books so I've got no idea who Julien Mayfair is, except that he seems to be a popular character? Or at least very well-known among MW book fans? So, MW book fans, what do you think?
As for me, here's hoping they give Ted some good material to work with... yeah, I'm still not going to watch season two, but this casting announcement has stuck with me. Ted's going from Thomas Harris to Anne Rice.
