This? Is not a romance...
So, I read Ravishing the Heiress by Sherry Thomas because I wanted to read a Marriage of Convenience story and it was cheap.
It is book 2 in series and it is veeeeery apparent, because suddenly out of nowhere, we get whole scenes about the couples of the first and third books that has absolutely nothing to do with this book (also, the “heroines” of those books are the sisters of the hero in this book and cannot shut up, except for when they should rant and rave, such as when their brother is an emotionally abusive douchecanoe to his devoted, adoring, doting, supportive wife whom they supposedly like for more than the money she gives their family, without which they would live in poorhouses or something. Oh, and the most prominent sister is an affair partner of a random, married non-hero. Yeah. And apparently the other isn’t much of a good person either, since apparently she deceived her husband or something before their got married... What a nice family, right?).
I would try to summarize all the ways in which the heroine is dragged through the mud and spat at by the hero (even in loveless marriages, husbands were more discrete and empathetic and respectful towards their wives than this). But this post would then end up being longer than than the word count of scenes pertinent to this book instead of shilling the two others.
Y’know, for one, brief, hopeful moment I thought those commercials would lead to the hero of the next book dropping little miss affair partner for the heroine in this book, and thus turn it into a romance (and link their scenes to the book they actually were in). It didn’t happen.
Then I reached the abrupt end.
And there’s no grovelling on the hero’s part. At all. It just ends because he decided that he doesn’t like his immature love interest.
But lets recap a few things he did before those final, few pages:
He paid all debts and restored the entailed estates with heroine’s money, ideas and expertise.
He paid for his widowed affair partner (who clearly cares not about him at all except how much he can take care of her), and planned on buying her ponies for her children, a country estate, and so on with heroine’s money as he planned to leave heroine and set up a life with widow after six months of getting heroine pregnant (and presumably abandon her and their baby, also, doesn’t seem to care what will happen to widow’s children, one who is a girl who need to come out in society when older, should their incredibly blatant affair become known, on top of the humiliation of his super-supportive wife and his hypothetical heir).
He literally would have nothing without heroine’s money, emotional support, sick care (after alcohol withdrawal on their honeymoon, which she had to deal with alone), and yaddayaddayadda (and probably would not have had his widowed lover, either, since she was looking for someone to take care of her, which he couldn’t have done without the heroine’s money and inherited business).
It’s just too much to forgive by any human, but we get that abrupt end with no grovelling because heroine fell in love with him eight years ago at first sight when she was sixteen... (Hero is supposedly super attractive and she’s super plain, but as I read the book, she was super attractive by her personality alone and the hero was an egocentric, whiny, insensitive manbaby in the extreme, who literally takes her to Italy as a gift, but then takes a lover when they’re there that makes sure to show up in public in front of heroine at the hotel because “man haz neeeeeedz”. On top of trotting a parade of lovers in front of the heroine [often in public among high society] that AREN’T his One True Love That Got Away And His Excuse For His Douchbaggery.)
This book isn’t just not a romance.
It’s an anti-romance.

Sure ! hope you enjoy !
Tumblr media
- Someone please stop Emma because she's legitimately tearing the house apart to find decorations
- So basically they've separated each other in groups for a reason
- Emma , Don , Nat , Anna and Conny are in charge of decorations
- Norman , Gilda , Thoma , Lannion , and Phil are in charge of keeping you distracted
- Ray , Alicia , Sherry , Eugene , and Isabella are in charge of the cake
- The rest of the little kids are also helping Norman and the others keeping you distracted
- Norman has to drag you outside because Emma and Don keep making loud noises from dropping things and shoving things aside and you keep getting worried something happened
- So Norman asks Gilda to check on them and she tells you if something serious happened she'll call you
- When she comes back she says that a vase accidentally tipped over and Isabella's already cleaned it up so you don't have to worry
- Phil also asked if you wanted to pick flowers with him after tag !
- Of course you said yes !!
- Meanwhile your playing tag with the others , Ray is dying on the inside asking himself why so many little children had to be on his group because they are spilling and splashing the cake batter everywhere-
- Isabella finally told them that they won't have enough cake batter for the cake if they don't act seriously and then you won't have a cake which made them stop and start seriously baking
- Since Eugene was the youngest , Ray held his hand over the whisk so they could stir together without making any mess
- Nat suggested he play you Happy Birthday on the piano , and Emma immediately agreed
- So while Nat's practicing , Anna is helping Don put up a banner that says ''Happy Birthday'' and Emma and Conny are placing colorful plates , party hats , etc .
- When everything is done , Ray asks Isabella to go outside and say that its lunch time , so that you can eat and have cake after wards
- When the kids hear this , they all run inside , including Norman , so they can turn the lights off and hide to surprise you !
''Happy Birthday !!!''
- Everyone screams the moment the lights turn on
''Aww thank you all so much !!'
- After that , you all sit down for dinner and have a nice slice of cake afterwards :)
sorry if this was a bit long !!

“My father was one of the best swordsmen south of the Yangtze River. I am his heir. Do you think any Rouran soldier can stand in my path?” Are elderly women easier to fool than seven-year-olds? Which one wants more desperately to believe that a loved one will return against all odds? Auntie Xia looks at me, half in astonishment, half in wonder—and I have my answer. Even more than Murong, she needs to believe I will come back safe and whole.

Lady Sherlock, Tome 1 : Une étude en rose bonbon — Sherry Thomas
Tumblr media

Currently Reading: A Study in Scarlet Women by Sherry Thomas
This isn't my favorite so far, but I'm busy and I don't always want to listen to music when I'm driving. I'm not really sure what I dislike about it, either the writing in general or the narration, but overall this isn't my cup of tea so far, but I'll see if it gets to the point of DNF territory, because it's interesting enough to not be there (yet).

At Red Cliffs, two hundred and fifty years ago, Cao Cao had four times as many soldiers as his opponents did, yet they defeated him, killing a hundred thousand of his men in a single decisive battle. What if I were one of the hundred thousand caught in that turning tide? To have no room to maneuver, all escape routes cut off, and only a sword against a forest of spears? I have promised everyone at home that I will return safe and sound. How do I do that? How do I take charge of my fate when all around me, men have submitted to theirs?
