notes: Thanks so much for the ask! I really appreciate your support(: I actually plan on doing a college series with each of the snk men having individual sets of drabbles, so this goes along perfectly with that!

EREN:

- I’m going to say Computer Science SOLEY because my Com Sci friends always seem to hang out on campus?

- Like not even in class, idk why but Eren’s just constantly there??

- Hanging out in the cafe, lounging around the courtyard, bowling in the recreation room, etc. No one’s ever heard him say “I gotta go to class”

- The man acts as if he doesn’t have a class to go to

- Most of his work is actually just completed at night anyway, when he’s not out at parties or with friends he stays up all night doing his homework

- Doesn’t really talk much about his classes but he probably does really well in them actually

- He probably doesn’t have too many Com Sci friends because he’s a bit intimidating in class? Hood up and headphones usually in or around his neck?

- But somehow he’s a social butterfly outside of his major, knows someone from every single one of your classes somehow

- I feel like freshman year he probably went overboard with parties? By the time he’s a junior he probably eases up on them, opting to stay up late doing his classwork last minute

- He might work at the campus tech office helping repair laptops for students! It’s better than working at a coffee shop in his opinion

- Probably plays intramural sports like soccer? Volleyball? Just for fun, probably decent at most group sports

- “Just for fun” but gets mad at his friends when they don’t attend his games “Eren I had an EXAM” “Don’t care, you should have rescheduled”

JEAN:

- My college headcanons for Jean are lowkey inspired by this annoying kid from high school who grew up and became hot? We had a love hate thing for a while😌

- So I’m going to say Poli-Sci just for that? But also I think it would actually fit Jean a lot

- He wants to see change in the world and he won’t have much patience for hypocrisy or overall assholes

- “Oh you don’t like (political candidate)? You think they’re the antithesis of American ideals? Name one of their policies. What does it about?”

- He’s really good at figuring out which of his peers just seem to parrot back things they’ve heard, yk? Like the students who memorize a Ben Shapiro argument but then cannot comprehend or form their own opinion?

- I think he’d be super understanding and accepting of other ideas, and honestly do a really good job of explaining both sides of debates?

- Understands that a lot of people shy away from actually investigating their political ideas and values because it can be intimidating, so he’d love to just talk to you about things and he’d make it really easy to understand

- Honestly I think he’d be a really good college professor someday, I bet he’d consider that as a career path once he saw his classmates turning to him for help

- He would want to be involved with the student political field on campus, councils and boards to advocate for his peers— I’d even imagine his classmates recommend him to join the student council

- But he wouldn’t have time for that(‘: he needs his time away from school sorry

- That’s his excuse to go out with friends a lot and fuck around

- At various parties throughout the week, bars, events, etc etc man’s a bit popular

ARMIN:

- Double major in History and Anthropology!!

- You already know this boys a total braniac

- Takes the most specific but random history courses in hopes of “really developing a broad spectrum of historical context”

- I was a history major and I took a nonhuman/abstract history course? I think Armin would hate a course like that at first, but then it ends up becoming his favorite

- The concept of my course was that studying nonhuman history (like animals or nature) reveals a lot about the people who did the research? And what they were passionate about?

- I did my final research paper on Greenland Sharks and how they live for hundreds of years, and how I’m fascinated by them because I’m fascinated with mortality? And so my paper juxtaposed a race to find the “key to immortality” through Greenland Shark DNA, and the history of death and our conscious awareness of death… I think Armin would eat that shit up

- One of the students who goes into their professor’s office hours just to talk to them about their theses and concepts

- Keeps in touch with his professors after he graduates too!

- Volunteers at the Student Writing Centers to help other undergrads with their papers, just reads through them and gives them some feedback

- Also takes a few creative writing courses!! Might have a poem or short story published in the student-run literary journal! He frames his copies on the wall(:

- As far as off campus activities he probably is active in lot of clubs or groups! Especially things like DnD! He is the Dungeon Master for his campaign

- But also involved in student orgs and clubs, loves checking out the activities board and exploring what the campus events are’

CONNIE:

- Business Major

- So sorry to all of my business major friends and anyone following me who’s a business major

- But at my school it was a joke? The major for people who didn’t know what they wanted to do?

- One of my friends had to decorate a Monopoly board for their final

- He’d probably pay Armin to write his papers? Or try to at least

- Honestly I bet he’d take the most random electives though? I don’t know how many Business majors need but his are so diverse and he’s super engaged in all of them

- Might take a Ping Pong course as a joke (my school offered one) but then takes Atmospheric Science? Imperial Russian History? Yoga? Latin??

- He claims it’s so that he can be a one-man-team in trivia nights and smoke everyone else

- But honestly I think he’d just have a lot of fun learning all of the random stuff!

- Habitually five minutes late to every class, but I think his professors would really like him otherwise?

- He’s extremely active and involved in class discussion, even if he’s just cracking a joke or giving an opinion

- If he’s not in a frat himself, he’s probably super close to all of the frats in town and gets invited out a lot!!

PORCO:

- Architecture Major

- Have you ever seen those “Architecture Majors be like: I have a whole building due on Friday 💀”

- He’d get so offended by those omg?? “That’s literally not true” or “Ha ha it’s funny when you say that but I actually have a model building I need to make”

- But the mode is made out of foam board and toothpicks or something bro chill

- Probably has glue on his fingers like 24/7? Hates building models with a passion. Especially with their super quick curing glue?

- Might actually make Armin help out with his models since Armin paints DnD and Warhammer models??

- I think Porco would prefer the design aspects of architecture and not the hands on part as much

- Is on the school’s soccer team! So he is usually at practice after school

- Probably hogs a squat rack or a bench at the campus gym, sorry not sorry

- I mentioned this in my college Porco headcanon set but I think he’d also go on runs daily around campus in the morning

- Probably one of those guys who brings around a gallon jug of water or a protein bottle

- You can tell Porco is nearby when you hear the protein bottle shake shake shake shake shake (yk with that little metal ball in it)

REINER:

- Okay I struggled with this one but I think he’d start off as a anatomy/physical science major? But then might switch off and go into education 😭

- I just think he’d be a great elementary teacher okay

- At first he’d want to go in to become a Physical Therapist?? So he’s super knowledgeable on anatomy and physical training

- Also on the soccer team, maybe the captain even! He leads warm ups and he’s super observant when it comes to his teammates and their physical capabilities (makes them personal workout routines and Bert is the only one who follows it precisely)

- I think halfway through his sophomore year he realizes that being a physical therapist isn’t what he wants to do? It’s work he’s good at, but does he like it?

- So he switches to be an education major!

- Honestly I could see him becoming a gym teacher or a general primary teacher!!

- He’d be really honored with the opportunity to make a difference in kids lives

- I know that teachers are horrendously underpaid (I’m studying to teach myself), but also shuts people down when they make tease him about that because he’s so proud that he’ll be aiding in the education and support of children!! He’s not in it for the money!

- Works at the gym, basically lives at the gym

- I think he would also be super passionate about activities on campus and school pride?? He and Armin are at every event hahah, his closet is full of different free r shirts he’s picked up

- Not necessarily popular by any means, but his classmates ADORE HIM! He’s super kind, the kind of classmate who will raise his hand and ask the teacher to repeat something or explain it further, even if he knows the content but if he knows a peer struggles with it?

LEVI:

- Literature major, maybe a philosophy minor??

- Similar to Zeke, I always imagine him as a grad student or TA

- One of the snarky, no nonsense students who will shut down his peers if he doesn’t agree with them

- Open to debate his ideas, but no one seems to want to 💀 he’s just a bit intense

- Probably one of those people who gets mad when his essay gets a B+ “I don’t think the Professor was able to comprehend my views, if he did he would have given me an A”

- As a Graduate Student he may teach a class to the undergrads and he’s super engaged with the content, and will just talk and analyze the stories for the class if they don’t participate??

- But he will not tolerate missing assignments

- As a philosophy minor he probably appreciates a lot of the history and context behind the philosophy

- Also probably laughs a bit at the pompous nature of most of his peers? Their whole “nobody understands life like I do” thing?

- Might secretly fuck with his peers by saying the most absurd and ridiculous things in a deadpan way to get them to agree with him “Dwelling on death is like thinking you need to shit soon, but not knowing when you need to go.” And then he waits and stares at them. “Yes, Levi, I agree completely”

- I think he’d be a columnist, or studying to be one? Journalism might have been a better route for him but I think he’d appreciate his courses on classical literature too much to not take them

- Might even take a creative writing course or two? Stays up all night in his apartment, under a poster that has the Ernest Hemingway quote: “There is nothing to writing. All you do is sit down at a typewriter and bleed”

ZEKE:

- Biochemistry loser nerd science man

- I always imagine him as a med student?? So if he’s not in biochem he’s already in med school, a couple years older than you!

- Probably wants to go into neurology or oncology, something intense!!

- I also think he would have taken a lot of history courses as an undergrad though? Enough that his advisor suggests he just gets a history minor

- I don’t know how this man has the time but he’s probably a research assistant for the chem labs or a TA for some of the history courses he liked taking

- He’d probably be a little pretentious about it, saying that TA-ing his history courses are the most relaxing part of his day

- Like shut up we get it you’re a nerd

- But honestly the biochem courses are extremely hard?? Especially if he’s a lab tech or RA!

- He’s probably one of those students who believes that through enough pressure he’ll become the perfect student so he does not take care of himself (🙋🏻‍♀️ I’m that student)

- So any free time he has he dedicates entirely to school or other resume filling activities that he can on campus

- I love the HC of him coaching little league baseball though? That’s probably the one time that he’s just a regular guy lol

- Makes sure his Tuesday and Thursdays are light on course load so that he can take the train to his hometown and coach the kiddos, might hit a bar with his biochem friends on Thursday nights afterwards

Red, White and Royal Blue: A Royal Obsession

This is honestly a long overdue [personal] review of one of my most favorite book to movie adaptations EVER, considering it came out last August 11, 2023, and I wrote this entire thing on October 11, 2023 (Wow, on the 2nd month anniversary of the movie's release! How ironic!). But hey, what's important is it's here and it's here for you to read.

To be quite honest with you all, I have no particular format for this review, but I will be reviewing the storyline, the characters, the dialogue and what's in the book but not in the movie and vice versa.

I will also discuss the perfection that is the CASTING!! Like I can't imagine anybody else as Alex and Henry than who was casted, and you should know their names by now even though I'm gonna state their names a little later, so stay tuned.

Feel free to keep reading even though you haven't watched the movie or read the book, I'll leave it to your discretion but there is a section where I discuss the differences between the movie and the book so skip that if you wish ;)

So with that, I'll go ahead and jump into the movie and book review.

RED, WHITE AND ROYAL BLUE MOVIE AND BOOK REVIEW

Let's talk about the storyline first.

The storyline is not one for your typical romantic comedy. To be honest, this is the first romantic comedy storyline of its kind that I have ever seen in my life, like its not set in like high school or whatsoever where stakes are low. This is sort of high stakes (though not fantasy level high stakes), considering that the lives of the main characters Alex and Henry are forever altered with what happens in the story. This is also a story with an enemies/rivals-to-lovers trope, which I personally love, like I'm such a fan for any story with that trope.

The story has plot and it's a good one. It's one of those plots that are sort of unforgettable and you really need to watch until the end to find out what happens. The storyline of this balances the comedy to the romance and the drama. Like I love that so much, it's everything I want in a romantic comedy story.

Also, there are certain changes between the movie and the book but I'll discuss that in a bit.

Now, let's talk about the dialogue.

With regards to the dialogue, I wouldn't call it cringe because some of the lines are just the wittiest and hit lines that I have ever heard and read. The banter between characters is so fun to read and the way the actors delivered the dialogue is just worth remembering. Like there are certain scenes that I can never unhear from my brain, even while I was reading the book. I would also like to point out that the dialogue are not those cringy one-liners that other rom-coms have and so, it was one aspect that set it apart from your typical rom-com.

One thing that I would like to point out is the conversations between Alex and Henry through text and emails. Now, this was an aspect in the movie that I loved, like the way they executed their conversations in the emails and texts by having text bubbles show up is just cool. Their emails were longer in the book, with some poetry involved but I didn't mind how it turned out in the movie.

I'll now talk about the characters and the utter PERFECTION that is the CASTING.

This story does not have an overload of characters, which makes it easy to remember almost everybody in the story. There were some characters who were not included in the movie or was changed in the movie but kind of had the same vibe with the original character in the book. The titular characters of this story are Alex Claremont-Diaz and Prince Henry. Notable side characters include June Claremont-Diaz, Nora Holleran, Princess Beatrice, Zahra Bankston, President Ellen Claremont, Oscar Diaz, Shaan Srivastava (Henry's equerry), Rafael Luna, Percy "Pez" Okonjo, Duchess Catherine of Edinburgh, Queen Mary and Henry's pet beagle David.

Casting wise, I have nothing to say except that the characters were casted perfectly. Having Taylor Zakhar Perez as Alex and Nicholas Galitzine as Henry was nothing but PERFECT! Like, their chemistry was off the charts and emanating through the screen as I was watching the movie. The banter that flowed between them is so natural and so fun to watch. They did have to be close immediately because of the intimacy of the story, and I love how easily they got along considering that Nick was casted first and they had to find someone who can easily bond with him and I'm happy they found Taylor because their friendship is a gem to be treasured.

Even when I read the book after watching the movie (I know, it's a sin. PEACE!), I heard their voices in my mind as I was reading their characters' dialogues. As for the supporting characters, Uma Thurman as President Ellen Claremont was a force of nature, her speech toward the end of the movie was something else, Sarah Shahi was hilarious and iconic as Zahra, Rachel Hilson as Nora is the best friend you want in your life, and Ellie Bamber as Princess Beatrice is the sweetest and supportive sister you want with you during tough times.

Honestly, I have nothing but praise for the casting of this movie. Other casting directors should learn from this (just kidding, but lowkey, yes, they should!).

Moving on to the twists and differences from book to screen.

Similar to every other book to screen adaptation, not every element from the book gets adapted on screen and this movie is no different. Certain characters were also not adapted and changed and certain scenes were not included.

Let's talk about the differences in characters first.

One of the characters that I really wanted to see in the movie (this is after reading the book already) was June Claremont-Diaz. June is Alex's older sister and the First Daughter of the US. She was not included in the movie, which kinda made me sad because her banter with Alex and Nora is one of my favorites in the book. Also, she just provides that sisterly vibe to Alex similar to what Beatrice provides to Henry. I would've also loved to see the Claremont-Diaz siblings banter on screen but sadly, that is not the case. I would also like to mention that one of my favorite actresses Emeraude Toubia was the fancast for June and simply imagining her with Taylor just makes me giddy and happy.

Another character that was not there but mentioned multiple times in the movie was Henry's mother Duchess Catherine of Edinburgh. She was present in the book but not in the movie so that's another character that I would've loved to see on screen.

For the characters that were changed, a few notable ones were Rafael Luna. Rafael's character became Miguel in the movie, and believe me when I tell you that Miguel irritates me in the movie, especially when he is around Alex, which is always! Another notable character change was the royal ruler of England. In the book, it was Queen Mary but in the movie, the character became King James so it was a transition from a queen to a king which I don't mind.

So far, those are the only ones that really come to mind. The other side characters like Zahra, Nora, Shaan, and Percy were maintained. I would also like to add that it's a smart move when they decided to have the author of the book Casey Mcquiston appear in the movie! That's a slay, honestly.

As for the differences in the storyline and dialogue...

Storyline-wise, the movie stayed pretty true to the book, which is honestly good because I am not the biggest fan of when they put too much twists in a book to screen adaptation that sometimes it already strays away from the original plot. Some iconic scenes from the book that did not make it to the movie (the Cornetto scene, for example, but it was released later on) and some minor changes to places were made like in the book, Alex and Henry first met in the Rio Olympics while in the movie, they first met at the Melbourne Climate Conference.

Dialogue-wise, it is pretty much the same thing. Some dialogue was just made more dramatic in the movie (Zahra saying "I will Brexit your head right off your body" to Henry in the movie is one of my favorites), but most of it was taken from the book itself which honestly, slay because the book basically gives you your script so if changes were to be made, it would be minor and not super major.

More deleted scenes could possibly be coming, so keep manifesting for their release, you guys!

Before I end, let's talk intimacy, smut and spice

This story is definitely not YA, and it has spice and smut within. Honestly, I would rate the spice 3/5 chili peppers because it's not like a full-blown "frack me boneless" or something but it still has hooking up and making love scenes that are essential to show the growing romance between Alex and Henry. To be fair, since I watched the movie before reading the book, I was surprised by the speed of the spice but I was also enchanted by the tenderness of when they made love in their room in Paris. Like that scene was beautifully executed and I was speechless after that.

The intimacy level of the story is one of the main reasons (if not the main reason) why Nick and Taylor had to be close so fast because the level of trust that needs to be established in order to execute the intimate scenes is necessary between two actors. Their dedication to their craft just leaves me in awe every time I think of the care and work they, along with the entire cast and crew, put into this movie.

Now, to conclude,

To end, I do not regret watching Red, White and Royal Blue. It's one of those feel-good movies that I could never get tired of no matter how many times I have already seen the movie, read bits of the book and heard the dialogue. It's just that good. The movie easily became a comfort movie for me and the book is one of my 5-star reads for the year.

History, huh? This movie definitely made some.

"Bob's Burgers" Season 4 Episode Ranking Rewatch (Long Post)

So, I've been rewatching "Bob's Burgers" from the beginning and ranking the episodes using the spreadsheet that @babsvibes created! If you want to know why I'm doing this or how I view the 1-5 rating scale, you can check out my Season 1 post! If you want to check out any of the other seasons, I've been using the "bob's burgers episode ranking rewatch" tag for all of them.

Now, on to Season 4:

Ranking Breakdown: 13 5s; 9 4s

Season as a whole thoughts:

I'm genuinely wondering if Season 4 might end up being the highest rated season when this project is all said and done. And that's interesting because it is not a season I immediately think of when I think of a season with a lot of my favorite episodes- I think of 3 and 7 first. But Season 4 is just so consistently entertaining! As I got towards the end of it, I noticed that I had not given any of the episodes a 3 yet- but looking it over again, that checks out. I'd really be happy to watch any of these episodes any time I am in the mood for "Bob's Burgers"- there isn't a "meh" or a mixed review in the bunch. And since I have already rated episodes from later seasons when I've caught them on cable, am pretty certain that this might be the only season with no 3s or lower in it.

But honestly, one of the things that really makes "Bob's Burgers" standout among TV comedies for me- and one of the things that motivated me to do this rewatch- is that I think it has been really consistently good for a really long period of time. And if Season 4 was the most really consistently good season- well, then, maybe it makes sense for it to be my (mathematically calculated) favorite! (But we've still got a lot of seasons to go...)

Some thoughts on specific episodes (and feel free to ask if you want my thoughts on an episode I didn't comment on):

"My Big Fat Greek Bob": One of the "sleeper hits" of the season- I had forgotten how much fun it was! Bob's bond with the frat guys, the kids exploring the frat house, Linda and Gretchen's "lady goods" parties- it's all a hoot! And one of the pleasures of doing this rewatch has been realizing how much I enjoy many recurring BB characters- not in a "they are my new Blorbo I must create a billion head canons about them!" way but just in a "hey, it's nice to see you in this episode!" way. So, hey, Dr. Yap, it was nice to see you in this episode!

"Turkey in a Can": One of the hardest "Bob's Burgers" questions you could ask me is to name my favorite Thanksgiving episode- making me choose between this one and "Dawn of the Peck"?! Please no! The scene in the bathroom on Thanksgiving is one of the funniest bits of chaotic humor on the show ever. If I'm not cracking up when Gayle declares "It's the end of the world!" and kisses Mort, you should check my pulse because I'm probably dead.

"Purple Rain-Union": "Won't you enter my Acropolis and make my yogurt Greek?"- how come Aunt Gayle's name never comes up when people are discussing the greatest songwriters of all time?! Also, I love the scenes with Jen (one of my all-time favorite recurring characters) in this one- especially her hilarious "pep talk" to Linda. I also love the way Louise's nonsensical "everybody gets a black eye" plan somehow works!

"Slumber Party": Yes, the slumber party plot itself is great! Yes, Jessica and all the other recurring characters who debut in this episode are great! But what I really love about this episode is the amount of screentime and dialogue devoted to Little King Trashmouth!! "It's a rac-coup d'etat!" and "Aw, babies getting rabies" are two of my favorite ever Linda quotes! Let's just say that if I lived in Seymour's Bay I would be a crazy raccoon person alongside Linda and Teddy. I love those alley rascals!

"Easy Com-mercial, Easy Go-mercial": Hey, Randy, it was nice to see you in this episode! After "Fraud of the Dead", I was thinking about Louise directing that film and also directing the Meatman film in "Ain't Miss Debtatin'" and wondering if there were any other indications in the show that she had this interest in directing. So, it was interesting to rewatch this and note that Louise not only insists that she should direct instead of Randy because she came up with the script idea, but even when Randy is directing scenes of the commercial that she is not in, you can see Louise standing next to him mimicking his actions- like, it's not just about her wanting power or not respecting Randy (although both things are true) she's genuinely interested in directing!

"The Frond Files": Our first three stories anthology! Two things I really love in this one: the way Louise writes that ridiculous argument between her and Gene at the end of her story-it's the most sibling thing ever! Also, I LOVE the coloring and designs of the "Fart School for the Gifted" segment- it's just really beautiful art to accompany a really silly story! (I also love Linda's tearful reaction to that story and Bob insisting to Frond that he ending is ambiguous). I also loved the use of black and white for (most) of Tina's zombie story.

"Mazel Tina": Another fun thing of the rewatch has been noticing story types/structures that the show reuses that I enjoy- and this is one of them, where the Belchers are go to a place together (Tammy's bat mitzvah) and then all have separate little adventures there ("Mutiny on the Windbreaker" and "Legends of the Mall", are among other stories of that type). I particularly enjoy Louise in this one- Louise talking Janet into quitting her job and following her dreams is hilarious, as is all the Tammy-Louise interaction. One of the things that makes Tammy a great recurring character is that she has her own different dynamics with each of the Belcher siblings- they all mess with her, but in completely different ways.

"The Kids Rob A Train": So, as I have written in other long posts and in fics, one of the reasons I enjoy Louise and Rudy's friendship is that we can see it evolve over time. They don't automatically become besties after "Carpe Museum"- in this one Rudy tells Beanbag that he knows the Belchers from school, not that they are his friends. And I think we see some key moments in the development of their friendship in this one- Rudy's patience with Louise's siblings during his presentation about the train, Rudy and Louise's back-and-forth as he tries to get her to hand him the chocolate through the window, and his fake allergic severe reaction and her panicked response. But even if you aren't as obsessed with that relationship as I am, this episode has tons of great things- Bob's "friendship" with "Ramon" the boy riding the bike next to the train, Gene's outfit, the thrilling musical score!

"The Kids Run Away": Another sleeper hit that I never really appreciated until this rewatch. I particularly love that Gayle is actually helpful in resolving the Louise cavity crisis in this episode. Yes, Gayle has a LOT of issues, but I think she does try to be a good aunt and a good sister.

The "How Bob Saves/Destroys the Town" two-parter: Most of the time, my ratings are mainly based on how much I enjoy the comedy, story, and character beats of the episode- I haven't really rated any episodes up or down based on how they look visually- and I readily concede that is not really my wheelhouse, I don't really know much about evaluating animation or direction in animation from a technical perspective. That being said, both parts of this two parter were probably the first episodes of the show where I repeatedly thought about how beautiful it was! There are many great shots that make the episodes seem more cinematic or theatrical (the spotlights on the singers during the musical numbers) rather than "just" an episode of television. The view of the town when Bob and Calvin are on top of the rollercoaster is particularly great. And I love how they brought back so many recurring characters, even if it was just for silent cameos (like Darryl and Logan being in the background for part of "Bad Things Are Bad")! This episode really shows how much the show had grown over four seasons- how it had developed a setting and a ton of characters, both supporting and main, so that you really cared about them. A fantastic ending for a fantastic season!

Random thoughts (stuff that doesn't affect the ratings):

-This season seems to have more plots involving Bob working somewhere other than the restaurant ("My Big Fat Greek Bob", "Bob and Deliver") and more plots about the family or members of it being in physical jeopardy (the first three episodes, "Christmas in the Car", the two-part season finale) than most seasons. I remember noticing that when it was first airing and worrying that it was a trend that might lead to the show becoming less grounded (like "The Simpsons") and that if we got to 10+ seasons we'd be seeing stories about Bob becoming a temporary chef for NASA and the family being stranded on the International Space Station or nonsense like that. Obviously, this concern was misplaced. if anything, the show has become more grounded as it's gone on, making episodes about things my retired aunt and uncle do as hobbies (birdwatching, hunting for mushrooms).

-I try not to nitpick jokes, but it bugs me in "Mazel Tina" when Gene yells "One Luftballoon!" after seeing Tina's blood red face. Yes, the English version of Nena's "99 Luftballoons" was "99 Red Balloons"- but "luft" doesn't mean "red" in German, it means "air" and "luftballoon" just means "balloon"-it has nothing to do with it being red! So, he's just saying Tina's red face looks like a balloon, which is an odd joke. Sorry, this is incredibly dumb, but y'know I took German for two years in high school and I need to use it occasionally so I don't feel like I wasted that time...

Ok so, with the Tekken 8 Closed Network Test now concluded, I'd like to share a few thoughts.

The game looks great, I love the new redesigns, I love the new animations and the fact that they got the entire cast to rerecord their battle grunts and win / pre battle quotes, it was especially weird to have certain characters use voice lines from different actors, some of whom weren't even speaking the same language 🤣

The redesigns are almost exclusively great so far, but I do hope we get alternate costumes. Yeah customization is there but I don't really care to have Nina in jeans and cowboy boots or Jin in platinum blond pigtails like... A lot of fighting games just have a palette swap as the second costume and call it a day, but from the very beginning all the way up to Tekken 6, Tekken had an alternate outfit for every single character. Not only that, but it was usually a more "casual" outfit too like, Kazuya's Tekken 1 1P was his karate gi pants but his 2P was a tank top and jeans. Asuka's Tekken 5 1P was her Aikido uniform and her 2P was her trademark shorts and tank top and so on. Tekken 7 originally went for the 2P palette swap, but at some point they added extra costumes, including classic looks, via an update, and I hope they are there from the start this time.

I played almost exclusively as Nina because she's been my main since 2005, with a little Jun, a little Xiaoyu and a little Jin thrown in. I also tried Lili's, Hwoarang's and Asuka's combo trials (nice that they FINALLY added combo trials, I don't know what took them so long lol) I gotta say it's extremely satisfying to see Harada CONSTANTLY shading Street Fighter on Twitter by saying that the base roster will feature a lot more fighters than our competitors an also Mortal Kombat by saying that they are focusing on legacy fighters before they even start considering guests. Like. That's a ball move and a huge reassurance for the fans. I also know it's in good faith and no harm is meant towards Capcom or Netherrealm but he's right and he should say it!

If there's one thing I hope they copy off of Capcom is Word Tour mode. Yeah NetherRealm Studios' cinematic story mode is fine... I guess... But World Tour mode is the best single player mode ever featured in a fighting game and Namco even have their own blueprint in the form of Tekken Force. We're probably still getting a cinematic-style story but there's still hope for Tekken 9, or maybe even a smaller-scale Tekken Force return, in the style of Tekken 4 or sth.

Arcade Mode needs a proper reintroduction as well, in Tekken 6 you only got 4 battles and you were done and in Tekken 7 you straight up got nothing at all out of Arcade mode and character endings were instead for the base game characters who weren't prominently featured in the cinematic story and you got them after a single battle... Very underwhelming.

Also hoping other "missing" modes like Team Battle return and maybe Tekken Bowl will be included from the get go this time? I've also had this request forever but I'd love to see 1P Vs. Com or Com Vs. Com fights be included in offline versus. Literally every other fighting game has it except Tekken and Virtua Fighter and I can't tell why. It shouldn't be hard to implement and honestly sometimes it's just fun to pick characters, costumes and stage and just fight it out with the computer, as a break from online grinding and whatnot.

Now, as for the battle system itself... It's lots of fun! There's tons of stuff going on at all times but it feels great to experience and it's not really overwhelming or anything. It's cute that they have included an "easy mode" for new players to ease themselves in the fun. I'm not a master player by any means but I've had almost two decades of experience in Tekken and legacy skill does play a big role in the Tekken meta so it's an interesting way to even out the playing field. Interestingly, they also seem to have simplified some of the more complicated commands like, I can pull off all of Nina's combo throws now with a total of like, four button presses at most? Crazy! The heat system feels a bit weird at first but it's a huge asset once you get into it which doesn't take all that long anyway.

Overall I am very satisfied with what I got to play and I feel like Tekken 8 is gonna be another huge chapter in Tekken's history as well as the FGC's as a whole and I honestly cannot wait! Hopefully I will have moved out of Greece by the time it's out because my internet connection was killing me 😭🤣

I also better see miss Anna and Christie in the game or else I'm rioting.

Hey, do you have any advice on setting up an online portfolio? Specifically, what did you use to create the site, or did you code it yourself? I've been wanting to make one but I've never built a site before. My art instructor recommended using Google sites but I thought I'd ask for your recs bc I love how yours looks :^)

hi there!! i use cargo for my portfolio---they're a website builder like wix or squarespace, but i find that some of the features they have are a bit more avant-garde/interesting compared to something like squarespace (and when i joined, it was cheaper---now theyre about the same per month, so its up to personal preference tbh)

i would only recommend using something like squarespace or cargo or wix if you can justify the cost of the website upkeep, otherwise there are some other options out there: carrd is genuinely a good option, accessible and affordable (and im sure there's plenty of videos going over how to set one up for a portfolio); neocities is also fun, but you have to know how to code a little bit to utilize it (but! its really cool and cheap, so if you wanna learn how to code your own site, its a great place to do it). i also think google sites can totally work---haven't used it myself, but i've seen other people who have!

honestly, the most important aspects of a portfolio are: showing your work, nice and big, without too many distractions (captions and accompanying text are fine yknow), with a clean layout, and some sort of bio section with a way (or ways) to get in touch with you! as long as you can put everything together in a way thats easy for potential clients to see your work, then it doesnt matter exactly what you use :)

(i would recommend getting your own domain name if you can, honestly i think thats one of the more affordable things that makes your site feel professional! like if you connected a .com to a carrd, i think thats a great utilization of funds, if you can afford it ofc)

is there anything i should know before starting?

I have a lot of advice of varying usefulness.

Don't put too much pressure on yourself to understand everything. KH is more about the fun moments, characters and vibes than really following the plot super closely, at least to me. I must admit I didn't get far in UX and I haven't played Dark Road.

Don't watch the cutscenes for 358/2 Days in the collection, the movie they put together honestly sucks. Watch a cutscene movie on YouTube from the original DS game. Everything about it is going to be better, and Days has one of my favorite stories in the series.

Regular Pat on YouTube has a lot of great Kingdom Hearts videos and I would recommend him both to any long time KH fan, and people trying to get into the series.

You can skip Re:Coded entirely. Some people will try to tell you otherwise. They're lying to you.

The original KH has a lot of fun secrets, really take your time and explore and try things out! There's no other game in the series that pays so much attention to detail and has things I'm still discovering twenty years later. Try not to look up too much, of course I won't tell you how to play but I think the original game is best experienced with as blank a slate as possible! To me, KH1 is the embodiment of childlike wonder and exploration.

DON'T skip Chain of Memories. I believe the collection already organizes things in this play order, but ideally you should play KH1 first, then CoM, then KH2. You WILL still be confused when you start 2. This is fine. I think play order is heavily debated but I tend to prefer release order. I definitely wouldn't recommend playing BBS first despite it being a prequel.

Your choices at the beginning of KH1 affect how you level up and what your strengths are in combat so choose wisely!

Learn to block. These games are so much easier if you block. I say this as someone who tried to dodge roll my way through the game for years, until I got the FM version of 2 and had to fight a very difficult new boss. Blocking will save your life and once you get the timing down it's easy. Reflect is your best friend.

I do have a rough outline of the general story! As well as more defined plot points I like to hit within the arcs of the story. For example, I consider the part of the story we're in to be like the training/pre Outworld arc?? And I have certain moments with characters I want to hit before we move on with the plot! Of course, I am a very impulsive person so I leave it open and easy to change if needed. Events that happen later also tend to change to better fit the flow of the story, but I generally know the direction I want to head with everything.

I plan on giving every love interest an ending (think like endings in mortal kombat for each character!) So ideally I'd like to give each character their own unique ending/epilogue with the reader! People on AO3 also have requested a harem ending which I am open to making, but can't gaurentee due to characters like Shang Tsung. I mighttt make one without certain characters depending on how it all ends, one with everyone, or not one at all! I don't want to stress too much over that right now so that one is still up in the air whether I'll do it or not (especially since we've like, barely started ahaha)

You couldn't breathe. The beautiful white material billowing beneath you suddenly felt restricting. Suffocating. Like a prison of lace, and ribbons, and sequins. The room was starting to spin slightly, and you swayed on your heels.

You tried to use your reflection to anchor yourself, but the person staring back at you was practically unrecognizable. All you saw was an empty shell. A ghost.

Your soul was somewhere else. Your heart was somewhere else, or rather with someone else. And it wasn't the man waiting for you at the end of the aisle just a few rooms away. No, it was the last person you had ever expected.

It was dimples. And a gummy smile. Grabbing and shaking your shoulders during laughing fits. The most ridiculous and priceless expressions. The softest heart. Big, dazzling, brown eyes. The one man you had loved your entire life, and would, without a doubt, love for the rest of it. Your very best friend. Your Vernon.

Tears threatened to spill from your eyes, and you couldn't discern if their nature was sad, angry, happy, or some sort of mix. You frantically searched the glass for any sign of the person who should've been experiencing the best day of their life. The bride. They had to be there somewhere.

You reflected back to yourself with a face of terror and uncertainty. Someone who knew they were about to make the biggest mistake of their life. But was the mistake walking down that aisle, or walking out the door? Panic seized you at the realization that someone would be coming to get you from the room any moment now.

No one else would ever understand. And your husband to be would probably never forgive you. But you would never be able to forgive yourself if you married a man you didn't truly love. If you settled for what was easy. And safe.

You liked your fiance just fine, and you were pretty sure the two of you would still have a happy life together. It just wasn't the life you wanted. And deep down, you knew that a part of you would always resent him if you went through with this wedding. He deserved better than that, and so did you.

You wanted the passion. The fun. The spark. You yearned for it. The warmth. The feeling of home. The completely undeniable feeling of having found your person.

Vernon had made it clear that he had found you a long time ago, and now you were just trying to catch up in the midst of the terrible timing.

The Night Before

"I can't believe you're getting married tomorrow."

You laughed as you glanced over at your best friend who was lying next to you on the roof of your parent's house, the sky above you lit up with stars. This had always been the spot the two of you would go to get away from everyone and everything, ever since you were kids.

"Never thought it would happen, huh?" you quipped back.

The man next to you sighed, "Not like this."

You sat up suddenly and stared down at your best friend quizzically.

"Meaning?"

"I guess I just…I just thought… You know what, nevermind. Forget I said anything." he insisted as he brushed off your question.

Like hell you were gonna let it go now.

"Vernon," you started slowly, and his name felt heavy on your tongue for some reason, "What did you mean by not like this?"

He was sitting upright beside you a moment later, eyes finding your own, and you were scared. Because he looked scared. Terrified, actually.

"I can't tell you." he said, his voice coming out so soft you almost hadn't heard him.

Something shifted in the air. Something big. Something new.

"Why can't you tell me?" you asked, your voice just as quiet, just as scared.

"Because…I can't take you hating me for the rest of your life. It's the one thing that would kill me. Even more than what's killing me right now."

The pain you heard in his voice made you instinctively reach for his hand. He was really scaring you now.

“Nonie, what are you talking about? Whatever it is, I’m not going to hate you. I could never hate you.” you tried assuring him, squeezing his hand tightly with your own.

Your grip was tighter than what you had intended, but right now, it felt like he could slip away from you at any moment. And you couldn’t let him go. Wouldn’t let him go. Vernon just stared down at your intertwined hands, staying silent.

“Hey, remember when I had just gotten my Nintendo DS for my birthday? I brought it to summer camp, and you accidentally dropped it in the lake the first day. I didn’t hate you then.” you reminded him, flashing a small smile.

Your best friend raised a questioning eyebrow at you, making you giggle slightly.

“Okay, fine, but that was only for like a day. And, we were ten. Ten year olds hold grudges over dumb shit.”

That finally earned you the tiniest grin from him, and he didn’t seem quite as out of reach.

“The point is, you’re one of my favorite people on this planet. You’re my very best friend, Vernon. Now, I don’t know what has you so worried that you think I would hate you forever. But I am telling you now, there is nothing, nothing, you could do that would make me hate you. Not now, not ever. So please, just tell me what’s going on.” you pleaded, scooting closer to him.

“Fuck.” he breathed out before dropping your hand and suddenly getting to his feet.

Terror flooded you once more, freezing you in place as you watched him run a hand through his hair in frustration. His slightly trembling hands clenched and unclenched.

“Vernon, please, just tell me.” you whispered into the night air, your voice catching on some of the words.

“I thought it would be us.” he said without looking at you.

You stared at him incredulously, “What?”

“I thought, that when this day came…it would be me waiting for you at the end of that aisle.” he gave a sad laugh, and something inside of you broke, “But, I guess that was just the fantasy of a stupid, naive, little boy.”

You tried to grasp for thoughts, words, but your head was spinning impossibly fast. The whole world felt dizzying. Spiraling and spiraling, until you were left in complete darkness. Your voice was noticeably shaking when you finally spoke again, “Vernon, what, what are you saying?”

You could barely make out his figure through the tears quickly forming in your eyes. He still wouldn’t look at you.

“I’m saying, that for me, it’s always been you. Always. But I thought, I hoped, that seeing you again these last few weeks would help me to finally get over you. That if I saw you were happy with someone else…then I would be able to let you go. Instead, it just twisted the knife deeper because we fell right back into what we had always been. Your smile. Your laugh. Your warmth. You’re my home, Y/N. The only thing I’ve realized these last few weeks is that I still love you as much as I always have. As much as I always will.”

The clear, raw emotion in his voice had you choking on a sob as you scrambled to your feet. You tried to step toward him, and gasped sharply as you immediately lost your footing. Vernon was closing the distance between you in one swift motion, strong, safe arms wrapping around you and pulling you to him.

“I got you.” he whispered into your hair, and you started crying freely now.

“Why? Why are you doing this now?” you wailed, your tears staining his shirt.

“I’m so sorry…” he started, and you realized he was crying too.

Your chest fucking ached, and your shuddering breaths were deafening in the night air.

“Fuck, Vernon. I’m getting married. Tomorrow. And you’re telling me this, now?!”

He pulled back and took your face into his hands, thumbs wiping at your wet cheeks, “I’m so fucking sorry. I needed you to know. I know I should’ve said something sooner. I’m so, so sorry.”

Your lip was trembling as you stared up at him with blurry eyes, and he smiled down sadly at you.

“You idiot.” you sobbed, Vernon’s face crumbling instantly.

He pressed his lips to your forehead, his own tears wetting your skin as your body shook with the overwhelming emotion.

“Please don’t hate me.” he begged softly.

"I don't." you cried, "This is just, it's a lot to take in when I'm supposed to be marrying someone else tomorrow. The timing is fucking terrible."

"Fuck, I know. I swear to you I thought the feelings would just go away. God, I wish they would, because feeling like this, is fucking killing me."

He drew in a shaky breath, and you clutched him even tighter.

"Which is why…I think it's probably best if I'm not at the wedding tomorrow."

Your chest tightened painfully as you drew back to look at him, "But I need you there. I need my best friend. I need you."

Vernon shook his head, and you had never seen him look so sad.

"I don't wanna risk making a fool of myself and embarrassing you in the process. I would never forgive myself, and neither would you."

"Nonie, please." you pressed gently.

"Let me ask you something, are you happy with him?"

You paused, but only for a second.

"I mean, yeah. He's really sweet, and he's been really good to me."

"Do you love him?" Vernon asked without missing a beat.

You hated it, but that one had you a little more stumped.

"Please," he breathed, "just be honest with me. If you tell me you're happy with him and that you love him, then I will be there for you tomorrow as your friend. I'll push everything else aside and just be happy for you, as long as you're really happy."

You broke down again, and his hands quickly came up to cup your cheeks once more. You saw the surprise flash across his features, followed by sheer panic.

"Hey, hey, I'm sorry. I have no right to ask you that, given the circumstances. Please, just forget it…forget I said-”

“I don’t know!” you cut him off with an emotional outburst.

Your best friend’s eyes went wide, hands dropping from your face, “You don’t know what?”

“Fuck! I don’t know if I love him, okay? I mean, I think I definitely could with time. I mean, we do have forever, right?” you were talking to yourself more than to Vernon, but the words continued to slip out.

“He’s been so good to me, and he loves me so much. And, I, I think I could be there with him too, someday. But right now I just, I just, ugh! Now I’m so fucking confused. My wedding is tomorrow! Tomorrow!! And you’re here, and you’re telling me these things, and looking at me like that. Now I don’t know. About anything!” you fumed, arms flailing around wildly as you talked.

“Whoa, okay, let’s try to calm down for a second, yeah? Maybe take some deep breaths for me, can you do that?” Vernon asked you gently as his hands rubbed up and down your arms.

You sniffled, but then slowly nodded your head. His eyes stayed focused on you as you inhaled deeply before exhaling a moment later, repeating the action a few more times until you’d felt like you’d sufficiently calmed down.

Vernon leaned his forehead against yours and let out a deep sigh. His hands reached down to find your own, holding them tightly between you. With your world still spinning, the contact really felt like the sole thing keeping you anchored to the current moment.

“Do you remember?” Vernon spoke up suddenly, but his voice was soft, “When we were teenagers, I used to drive to your house late at night to pick you up and sneak you out. And then we would just drive. For hours.”

You couldn't help but smile at the memory as you pulled back to look at him, “Sometimes all night. Sometimes until the sun came up the next day. And we always talked about just getting the hell out, driving off together and leaving everything and everyone else behind. Just drive and see where we’d end up.”

He beamed back at you, and your smile widened.

“Just partners in crime. And their getaway car.” he added, making you laugh slightly.

Oh to be those dumb teenagers again. Everything had been so much easier back then. Maybe the two of you should have just run away all those years ago. Maybe your wedding day would look completely different today if you had. So many maybes, it felt like they were unraveling you.

“What if…”

The sound of Vernon’s voice drew you back to your present reality.

“What if what?” you queried back breathlessly.

His hands squeezed yours so tight, it almost hurt.

“What if we went for that drive? The one we always talked about. Leave everything else behind. Just us.”

You heard the slightest ounce of hope in his voice, and it was like shards of glass penetrating your heart. Slashing and tearing. Leaving your chest in shreds.

“I can’t.”

It killed you to let those words slip, and the brief spark in your best friend’s eyes died immediately. Tears started to gather in your eyes once more, but you did your best to hold them back. Otherwise, you were just going to fall apart all over again.

“I understand.” Vernon said finally, his voice sounding defeated and flat.

“I’m sorry, Vernon. I can’t run away from this. I have to be brave and face it. Or it’ll follow me forever. I need some time to think and sort out my feelings. It wouldn’t be fair to me, him, or you to give you an answer right now. I’m sorry, I wish I could. I really do.”

He let out a long sigh, “No, I know, you’re right. And I know I really put you on the spot with all of this, I’m sorry. I should’ve told you all of this a long time ago, before it was too late.”

“Yes, you should’ve.” you agreed, but your tone was more lighthearted than scolding, “But, despite everything, I’m glad you told me. I just…have a lot to think about.”

“I get it. Thanks for hearing me out. If you do decide to go through with the wedding, then I truly wish you all the love and happiness in the world. But…I just don’t think I can be there to see it. I’m really sorry.”

His own eyes were starting to grow misty again. Damn, if only one of you could hold it together for more than five seconds.

“I hate it. But I get it. I want you there, more than anything. But I also understand if you just can’t be.”

“I love you.”

It wasn't like you had never heard him say those words before, but this particular time they just held so much more weight. A heaviness that settled itself as a pit inside your stomach.

“I love you too.”

It was always so easy to say back, even if your words were much lighter at the moment. Hanging between you before dissolving into the night air. Flying away with an undeniable freedom that you so desperately wished you could possess.

Back to a Bride's Existential Crisis

You had a huge, life changing decision to make, and not nearly enough time to make it. You glanced at your purse a few feet away, at the envelope visibly sticking out of it. The one you had sealed and slipped in your bag last night after Vernon had left. The one addressed to your waiting fiance.

The letter had been so much easier to write than you'd thought it would be, even if you were just writing it as a just in case. It was an explanation, an apology, and a goodbye all in one. But you still hadn't been able to bring yourself to deliver it last night. You'd had too many feelings bouncing around inside you, and felt that it'd only be right to sleep on them and hope that the morning brought clarity.

Of course, it hadn't. Because you were still attempting to attend your own wedding, and you were still just as confused.

"Fuck. What am I doing?"

You posed the question to your frazzled reflection, and no surprise, you received nothing helpful in return. Instead, you walked over to retrieve the letter from your purse.

Your fingers made contact, and you started to pull the envelope out. However, with your anxious and stressed state, you ended up accidentally tipping your purse over, some of the contents spilling out onto the floor.

"Shit." you swore under your breath as you started to reach for the letter, but found yourself frozen in place when you saw what else had fallen out of your bag.

With shaking hands, you picked up the item from the floor. You felt tears pricking at your eyes once more as you took in the photo strip of two goofy and idiotic, but happy teenagers.

You and Vernon. Back when you were in high school. It was just one of those things that you had always kept with you. Vernon, of course, had the matching one.

You studied the little colorful squares. Vernon with his ridiculous facial expressions, that he still constantly pulled today. And you. Smiling, laughing. Happy. Because of him. Because of his contagious warmth. Because he was home.

Before you even realized what you were doing, you had your phone in your hand and the line was ringing. You didn’t understand how such a small sound could be so impossibly loud, filling up the room around you. It felt like an eternity of ringing. But then-

“Y/N?”

Both of your hands frantically wrapped around your phone to hold it to your ear, “H-Hey.”

“Hey. I was, hah, I was just about to call you actually.”

You shook your head even though he couldn’t see you and chuckled slightly.

“How do you always know? You always know.”

“Must be our shared brain cell.” he teased back, making you laugh again.

A moment of heavy silence followed.

“Nonie?” you whispered into the phone.

“Yeah?”

“I…I don’t think I can do this. I think…I think this is a mistake.”

Your voice was shaking, as well as your hands.

“Do you mean the wedding? Or do you mean…” he trailed off, and your heart sank.

“I can’t marry him, Vernon. I just can’t. I’m fucking terrified to walk down that aisle and make the biggest mistake of my life.”

You barely managed to get the words out with how much your own emotion was choking you. The gasp your best friend let out on the other end cut you straight to your core.

“Fuck, Vernon. Everything is so messed up. I’m having a full blown panic attack on my wedding day. I’m gonna ruin this expensive ass make up on my face. This dress just feels fucking wrong. And I feel fucking wrong. And everything is just…just wrong!” you spewed into the receiver in an emotional burst.

“Y/N, I need you to listen to me, okay? Can you do that for me, please?” Vernon asked gently, seeming much more calm and collected than you.

You made a conscious effort to try and slow your breathing, “Yeah, o-okay.”

“Okay, good. Now, I need you to walk over to the window. Let in some fresh air, that should help you calm down.”

It sounded logical enough to you. There was a window to your left, and you carefully made your way over to it.

“I just wish you were here.” you mused aloud as your hands settled along the bottom of the frame, ready to try and lift it to let some air in.

You heard Vernon’s breath catch on the other end.

“Look up.”

You’d had yet to actually look out the window. Your gaze lifted to stare out through the glass, one of your hands immediately flying up to your mouth.

“So, I’m here.”

His voice came through the phone, but you watched his mouth form the words from where he stood across the street next to his car. Your mind flashed back to all the times you had seen him waiting outside of your house to sneak you out when you were teenagers. Something about the way your heart was starting to race had you feeling like those same teenagers again.

“Oh my God! What are you doing here?” you queried breathlessly, your hand coming back down to rest against the window.

Vernon gave a shy smile, and even from here, you could still see his adorable dimples.

“I couldn’t, uh, I couldn’t miss my best friend’s wedding.”

You let out a nervous laugh, “Sorry you came all this way when there might not even be a wedding.”

“Truth be told, I needed to see you.”

“Me too.”

“You look so beautiful. Like a dream.”

It was impossible to miss the way his face flushed furiously, and you felt your own face heat at his words.

“You look so handsome. I can’t even remember the last time I saw you in a suit.” you remarked, your tone somewhat teasing.

He blushed again, and awkwardly shifted his feet. You had never been more endeared by him. He really was so stunning. Classic open black suit and tie. Wavy chestnut locks parted to frame his face, some loose strands falling over onto his forehead. Like a dream, you thought.

“Vernon…listen. If I’m being honest, I haven’t been able to stop thinking about what you said last night. About you. About exploring this. Us.”

As soon as the last word left your lips, he started walking towards you, crossing the street in a few quick strides.

“Do you mean that?” he inquired, stopping just a few feet away from the other side of the window.

You knew the weight your answer held. You saw it swirling in his dark irises.

“Look. I can’t promise that I’ll feel what you feel, and have been feeling for years now. I can’t promise that I won’t hurt you, or that we won’t hurt each other. But, what I do know is that if I don’t give this, us, a chance, then I will always regret it. Even more than I’ll regret not walking down that aisle and marrying the wrong man. A good one, but the wrong one. He’s not my one.”

“Open the window.”

The line went dead, and your own phone slipped from your hands. Vernon’s eyes never left yours as he walked right up to the glass. Your hands were trembling as you carefully lifted up the layer separating you from each other. Suddenly he was right there in front of you, and air rushed in, clean and cool. Why was it then that you felt like you couldn’t breathe.

“Hey.” he greeted you, growing bashful again as he leaned his palms against the windowsill.

You giggled, heart glowing with that teenage feeling, “Hi.”

“Are you sure about this? I mean, all I want, all I’ve ever wanted is for you to be happy. I always secretly hoped that it would be with me, but if not then…I would just be happy if you were happy.”

His own hands were shaking, and his words were coming out in a rush. You reached out to intertwine your hands with his, and his big, beautiful, brown eyes looked back at you with what you could only describe as love. Warm and pure.

You may not have been there with him yet, but the stirring of wings inside you was undeniable. Excited, restless, little things. Full of curiosity. Hope.

“So…what happens now? I’ve never walked out of a wedding before. Let alone my own.” you quipped, and Vernon’s face contorted in laughter.

You joined in with him until you were both beside yourselves, Vernon having to lean on your bare shoulder for support.

“Well,” he started once he had finally regained his composure, gesturing behind him, “I did bring a getaway car.”

“Partners in crime.” you said back, giving him a knowing smile.

He beamed back at you and gave your hands a squeeze.

“Always.”

“Can I…” he trailed off, face flushing an even deeper shade of crimson.

“What?” you pressed, giggling slightly.

“Can I, uh, I mean would it be okay if, if I, if I um kissed you?”

His flustered state was so unbelievably adorable to you. The wings were growing incessant now.

“I mean, it is my wedding day. So somebody better.” you retorted snarkily, although you were blushing just as deep.

Vernon let out a shuddering breath, and you prepared for what would probably be the most awkward first kiss of your life. But then there was a sudden surge of confidence as he took your face into his hands, pulling you towards him.

A gasp had just barely escaped you before his lips were descending on your own. The wings inside you took flight. Soaring and falling and soaring again. It was like you were plummeting and ascending all at the same time. So this was what it was supposed to feel like.

Your hands reached out to grab onto his suit jacket and tug him even closer. Vernon groaned, and you smiled into the kiss. You felt his tongue slip past your lips a moment later, and sighed out at his taste. You were both desperately trying to get closer to each other, but there was still an open window between you… Which led to both of you losing your balance.

“Shit!” you exclaimed in surprise as you both tumbled onto the grass below, Vernon somewhere underneath your literal cloud of a wedding dress.

“Oh my God! What the hell is going on here?”

You looked back in horror to see your mother standing in the window looking down at you. Vernon was fighting for his life to surface from the white, billowy, death trap.

“M-Mom? I can, I can explain!”

Her eyes followed the movement of your dress as Vernon’s head popped up, looking dazed and his waves a mess. Your mom looked back and forth between the two of you, and your mouth opened and closed several times, but nothing came out. Finally, she just shook her head and laughed, “Well, it’s about damn time you two.”

“Mom!” you practically shrieked, “You knew?”

“Yeah, you knew?!” Vernon piped up as he recovered the upper half of his body from the bottom of your dress.

Your mother shot both of you a knowing look.

“Vernon, sweetie, you only used to ask for our blessing like once a week.”

Your best friend looked like he would much rather prefer being suffocated by the neverending layers of fabric, than to be having this conversation with your mother right now.

“That was when we were still kids!” Vernon shot back defensively.

“Yes, but, I could just tell. Mothers always can.” she voiced, flashing him a wink.

You didn’t think there was any way his face could get any redder, but then again, neither could yours probably.

“So, uh, the wedding is off. Sorry.” you said awkwardly.

“For what it’s worth, I’m proud of you for following your heart.”

Her words nearly brought tears to your eyes, but you blinked them away.

“I left a letter for him, will you please make sure he gets it? And tell everyone I’m sorry?” you requested with a sheepish smile.

“Of course. Now, you two better get out of here. Sneak off like you always used to as teenagers, even though you thought I didn’t know about that. But I did. Like I said, mothers always know.”

You and Vernon looked at each other, a mixture of shock and embarrassment on your faces. Wow, so many revelations today. You were letting out a squeal a moment later, when Vernon suddenly swept you and all your layers up into his arms, bridal style. He made a run for the car, or as much of a run as he could manage while carrying you, the two of you laughing wildly all the while.

Getting you and the dress to fit in the passenger seat was quite the ordeal, but you and Vernon found a way to make it work.

“Well, my lady, where to?” Vernon asked from the driver’s seat.

You leaned across the console to put a hand on the side of his face before softly pressing your lips against his own, “Anywhere. Just drive.”

What should you do if you feel like loser and absolute waste of space and garbage in the writing community? Like everyone hate you (all the talented well known people at least), your ideas suck, you'll never be popular or get request or anything like that and you'll never have the same amount of friends or support or love as others because you're stupid and annoying and your writing suck and everyone hate you and nothing you do matter? Like you'll never be successful or reach mile stone no matter how much you try like you had opportunity to but you screw it up because you stupid and annoying and dumb and now it's too late?

I don't really feel qualified to respond, but I'm going to give it a go anyway and hope that any of this is helpful.

The "writing community" is anyone who wants to try their hand at writing. It includes both the second grader putting together a handmade book during rainy day recess and the award-winning, bestselling professional author. There's no cap to the number of writers. There's no such thing as a waste of space.

"Hate" seems like an awfully strong word. I know it's frustrating when fics don't get the engagement that you want - and don't get attention from people you admire - but sometimes fics have a niche audience and sometimes people are busy. Personally, I've had stretches when I just can't read much at all or only very specific things (like stuff under 3k and nothing too intellectual). Reasons include: life being busy, general executive dysfunction, (rare) stretches when I am super-focused on writing, not wanting to read things too similar to what I'm working on, etc. For several months I just felt overwhelmed by the thought of leaving thoughtful comments and that tricked me into just not reading at all (don't be like me).

Popularity is... complicated. "Success" is complicated. If you're just looking at kudos... a not insignificant chunk is being in the right fandom at the right time (while also writing what lots of people are interested in). Here's a good overview about writing for kudos and how that doesn't relate to quality. You can have super-interesting ideas, but sometimes those ideas have a small audience (and that's ok if that's the story that speaks to you!). Honestly, I think all writers need to write at least one super-niche fic to readjust expectations about AO3 stats.

As for requests... Not all writers like getting them and not all readers like making requests? If I see that someone shared a prompt list ask game post, I'll send an ask, but that's usually it.

As for getting support... sometimes it can come from outside your fandom and from Internet strangers (or real life people in writing groups). I've been trying out this WIP Wednesday game because I wanted some encouragement to make progress, and a good chunk of people who nudge me to write don't follow me and won't ever read the final fic.

As for writing quality... That's also complicated. For one, people have different tastes (my eyes start to glaze over during long fight scenes or long descriptions, but other people eat that up). There are seemingly more-objective criteria (spelling, grammar, etc), BUT: people's knowledge of "the rules" isn't static and can be improved, sometimes it's fine to ignore "the rules" for style, lots of non-native English speakers write fanfic and that can lead to some charming (if less standard) writing, and one of the joys of fanfic is that it doesn't have to follow the norms of published fiction. If there is something that you want to work on in your own writing (for example, description and plot don't come easily to me), there are ways to practice. But only if you want to. Only if it's part of the fun. (Fun doesn't always mean easy.)

As for milestones... I don't know what milestones you're going for, but word count is the one most in your control. Getting that up isn't trivial, but the important thing is to keep chugging along.

I *know* it's hard not to obsess over AO3 stats or compare yourself to other people. I *know*. But try to remember that it's not a race or a competition. Writing is supposed to be fun (as much as writers like to complain about it sometimes). It's fine to want validation and encouragement, but stressing too much about the numbers/how much engagement you're getting can suck all the fun out of the process.

And it's never, ever too late. I took a loooong break from creative writing and sometimes I regret that, but I had other life experiences during that hiatus that help inform my writing now. We write when we have stories to tell and the life circumstances that let the words come out.

An American teen is stranded in London and with the world ending in a few days due to a comet... her only chance of getting back home is the the hands of a runaway British crown prince. Wren Wheeler has been looking forward to her amazing supposed to be life-changing trip to London, but it all goes terribly and now she just wants to go home.... except on her last day in London she helps out a cute British boy who turns out to be the Prince running away from his bodyguards. She ends up missing her flight, only to then learn that the world is ending in a few days and now she is desperate to find a way home. After helping Prince Theo, he offered her a favor, and the only favor she wants is a way back home but getting there wont be easy since Theo is on the run from his family and they have people going all around London looking for him. A quick hair dye job, some helpful friends, and an adventure all around Europe in hopes of making it home in time before the world ends.... easy peasy right? But Theo has his own agenda and secrets and Wren has to figure out if she can rely on him to get her back home. The end days are coming but can they make a few happy memories before then? This one was an interesting one, it started off fun but it kind of fell off at the end for me, it really felt like a rush ending that just abruptly ended and had me wishing there was more to the epilogue or something to explain what is in store for Wren and Theo and if they actually do get back together or reconcile. Honestly, it was a fun read until the end which kind of had me disappointed. However, if you are looking for a adventure with a splash of romance for two teens at the end of the world, give it a go!

What’s a ship you like that most people don’t?

Ooh this is a good question. The first one coming to mind is probably Alex & Carmín from Bia. Mostly because even as I was shipping them, I was questioning why lol. Like I know people do ship them, but I think others aren't as easy to forgive Alex (& rightfully so). I am mostly talking about s2 Carmilex (tho there were a few nice moments from their s1 relationship). Carmín has such a great story arc from shallow online personality to an authentic content creator who cares about things like the environment and enjoys up-cycling. And instead of pairing her up with a nice guy like Jandino who had a role in her transformation (which is a popular dcla go-to that I usually enjoy), the show paired her with Alex who also starts out as a not so nice guy. But oddly enough, I think that's what I like about them? Like Carmín was able to change, so she had faith that Alex could change too. That even when they were both horrible she still saw something good in him? I also thought it was hilarious how much Alex's mom loved Carmín and wanted them together instead of Mara who was just an outright brat. However, the only thing I didn't like (MAJOR SPOILER) was that they kissed when he was still with Mara. Like as bad as Mara was, he was wrong for cheating (which the show does address), but they could have just omitted that....Ultimately I still liked their ending and would've loved to see their relationship in a s3 where they were both on the other side of their journeys to be better people!

For non-dcla show I'd go with Dair from Gossip Girl since to most viewers it's probably the underdog ship. Chuck/Blair was the fan favorite pairing while Dair was treated as a weird filler plotline as the characters had little interaction prior. But that "filler" plot line was one of the best things ever written in that show. And to me those characters grew so much and at that point in their journeys were far better suited for each other than Chuck or Serena. Plus the chemistry between the actors was amazing. They really reminded me of a classic rom-com pairing. You could honestly tell the actors had fun playing against each other during a time they were probably getting burnt out. And they just brought out the best and happiest in each other which was refreshing with all the pain they suffered with their exes. They breathed new life into the show! But of course it was only short lived :/ (I like to pretend the show ended on their date on the MET steps)

Omg I forgot about the horror movies I actually really just ended up watching Disney channel show Halloween episodes and horror shows that I've seen before because most of the movies on Netflix aren't very good... but I watched the haunting of hill house which is so good!!! And I recently watched this French show called marianne and it was so freaky but so good I loved it!!! I've actually heard that smile isn't very good so I'm glad you liked it!!! I might have to watch it myself now... and honestly I was in the theater watching nope and there were so many scenes where I had my knees up to my chest because it was gross and freaky so you're not alone <3 whats your favourite genre to watch? -💕

ohhhh disney halloween episodes were so good from what i remember.. anything of note that i might want to rewatch?

i've heard so many good things about haunting of hill house but honestly for the sake of being able to sleep at night i've had to give it a miss .. i haven't heard of marianne, what's it about?

funnily enough, after i wrote my review on letterboxd i checked what other people said about smile and wow.. not entirely well received, i saw a lot of people saying it wasn't anything 'new', or interesting and just that other movies had done the same thing much better.. which could be true, but for me - someone who hasn't watched a horror movie for like 6 years - it was so fresh and unpredictable and like i have no idea what common horror tropes are so it was such a fun watch, despite the terror and discomfort.. 💀

UGH im so sad i missed nope when it was in the cinema, i had the chance to go and watch it but literally the one day i was able to make time it was fully sold out so i watched spider-man nwh again which .. i do not regret.. i will have to get around to nope bc i love daniel kaluuya so much and i think him and jordan peele made SUCH a good combo in get out and i look forward to seeing it !!!

my favourite genre.. hmm.. im pretty easy on movies, i just won't watch horror and war movies (😭) because they're not my cup of tea, i'll watch anything else if i can make the time to ! im not sure if i could pick a favourite but 9/10 when it comes to romance / rom-coms or coming of age films i enjoy them so i guess i'd say one of those? what's yours? :)))

I wrote this yeeeeeaaarrrssss ago when I was in a specific rom-com era. I want to say this is from like 2015?? 2016? This is a one-shot excerpt. I don’t think this is going anywhere or will be built upon but it was a good exercise on writing a flowing conversation with multiple characters.

Anyway, any constructive tips are appreciated. Who knows?? Maybe I’ll be inspired to breathe some life into it.

meeting the friends

He nodded and we walked in. "Hey, y'all wanna grab a beer?" Tom asked the room. A couple of "yeahs" and grunts ran across the room. "I've got this." I told them, walking towards the bar. As I passed by Grayson, he whispered "incredible" again, with my favorite crooked smile on his face. I smiled back, winking and went to get the drinks. Now, if I remembered correctly, and I do, Tom liked PBR, Jason was a Sam Adam's fan, and Tim and Jack are Bud Light kind of men. Placing the orders, I headed back.

"They'll be out in a second." I said, announcing my return.

"Hey you." Grayson said.

"Hey yourself." I returned, slipping in next to him in the booth.

"So Rachel, what do you like to do for fun?" Tom inquired.

Now, this is a pivotal moment, honestly, this whole evening with the guys is a pivotal moment because it's basically judgement day with them.

"Well, on the surface, it looks like I do normal things like, you know, working out, finding out new places and things, meeting up with friends but really, I'm just wrecking havoc, seeing destruction." I said dead panned with my voice dipping slightly at the end. Jason cracked a smile, Tim chuckled softly, Jack nodded agreeingly but Tom fired on, fulfilling the role of the inquisitor.

"You work out for fun?"

"Yeah I do. It's good for stress. And the body and all that."

"Right, right."

"Yep. I try to drag this one along" I gesture towards Grayson "but he can't quite keep up. So I try to take it easy on him."

"Can't keep up huh?"

"Sorry buddy. It's the truth."

"Don't sweat it." I told him, patting his thigh. He grabbed my hand, gave it a little squeeze and held on under the table. Our drinks arrived then, with fresh beer nuts and the waiter started attempting to distribute it when I delegated the drinks and the owners.

"Damn. That's pretty good." Tim said. "How'd you know?"

"I saw you all with them when I came in."

"We weren't drinking when you came in."

"True. You all were done but the bottles were in your vicinity at the table. I made an educated guess."

"Well, that's a damn good educated guess." Tim said in that sure way of his.

"Why, thank you."

"So Grayson here tells us that y'all met at a rodeo." I nodded.

"Excuse my assumptions but what were you doing there?"

Chuckling, I answered. "A friend of mine from school loves horses. Always has. We recently reconnected and he invited me out. It's been a while since I've been to one actually. College time was the last couple of times I'd been to a rodeo."

"'He' huh?" Tom jumped back into the conversation.

"Yep. 'He.'"

"How close are you and he?"

"How ever do you mean?" I innocently asked. He slightly squinted his eyes, realizing that I was forcing him to voice his insinuations aloud. Staying true to his reputation, he fired on unashamedly.

"How close are y'all? Your rodeo friend and yourself?"

"Pretty close, now that we've reconnected. We do all sorts of things, you know. Sometimes we get together and just braid our hair, other times, we like to go to cafés and bash on people's outfit choices but our absolute favorite pastime would have to be trying on dresses together when we go shopping." He smiled. "Right, right." He said, his twang slipping in. "She's funny." He told Grayson.

"She's also right here." I said, winking at him. "So, tell me, which one of you knew he was going to go riding without any safety precautions?" I turned on them. I saw recognition flash in all of their eyes. "Yeah, that's right. I know. Buddy over here got hurt and on your watch. Let's try to keep that to a minimum yeah?"

Heads up this is a little different from what I usually post and it's not RWRB related, i completely wrote this for fun

There's a rom-com danmei web novel (danmei, a genre of queer/mlm literature popular in China) that I wished more people here knew about because it's hilarious, sweet, unhinged, and honestly a really good template for fanfics, in fact over here most of the popular gay ships have a fanfic/ fan edits of it

It's called Mister Dior (it has nothing to do with the luxury brand) and it's set in a world pretty much like ours, with the exception that everyone has a thing called a smartbrain, which is essentially a smartphone directly implanted into a human brain (don't think too much about it)

The main characters of the story I'll simplify to Zhang (top, yes these things are fairly fixed in this genre and contribute to their personality) and Jiao (bottom) who have been married for seven years. They're both CEOs of big companies, but while Jiao has rich parents, Zhang built up his company by himself. At the beginning of the story, their relationship isn't bad per se, but they are having communication issues and drifting apart slightly.

One day Zhang gets into a mild car accident causing a concussion, but also a side effect which is the point of the story: before the collision, he was browsing trashy, tropey romance novels using his smart brain, and the collision hit his head so hard that the novels and his own consciousness got mixed up

The consequence is for a variable period of time, he will think he is the main character of a certain novel, Jiao is his love interest, and everyone around assimilates into some role from the story

Each novel is called a "script" and it's all hilariously tropey, you have ABO, Mafia, Vampire etc, all together 9 AUs, plus he's still in the real world, so it's like 10 stories in one web novel, all of which turn into comedy because the real world is still the real world and Jiao is trying really hard to deal with each script without setting off anyone else's alarms

And at the same time, because he has no filter when in character, Zhang ends up revealing certain things about their relationship that help them learn more about each other, understand each other better and improve their relationship, they come out stronger than ever

So TL DR: you have one half of the couple jumping through 9 AUs and the other half desperately trying to play along while still living their daily lives of prominent CEOs and semi public figures, all while learning more about and improving their relationships

It's sweet, it's kinky, it's fun and it's fucking hilarious.

And more than the novel, there's a completed radio drama and an ongoing comic of the novel. The radio drama, although in Mandarin, is an amazing production, one of the most popular on the radio drama platform, passing one hundred million plays earlier this year. It's how I learned about this novel as well. Me re-listening to the radio drama these days is what prompted me to write this lol

And the thing is because of the structure of the story, it's really easy to change the "script" and put in other ships, I wish more people explored this

I’ll never understand the appeal that Bollywood filmmaker Luv Ranjan has. As a writer-director, all his movies feature some form of misogynistic representation of women. Almost every movie. And now, in the first month of 2023, there’s a trailer for a new movie of his, which seemingly has the same issues. I usually don’t cover Bollywood trailers, but there’s a lot to say about this one. The Tu Jhoothi Main Makkar trailer (You’re A Liar, I’m Deceitful) tells a new story about the dynamic in a man-woman relationship, and it’s honestly, a little messed up. But not surprising at all though, given that it’s a Luv Ranjan movie. Read on to find out the main issue with the Tu Jhoothi Main Makkar trailer, and why it continues a disturbing trend from the filmmaker. Tu Jhoothi Main Makkar Trailer Seems Fun https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cx_Dtwn4ayw Starring one of Bollywood's biggest stars, Ranbir Kapoor, along with the talented Shraddha Kapoor, (no relation) the Tu Jhoothi Main Makkar trailer is everything a typical rom-com should be. The trailer sees the lead couple, each with impeccable style, oozing charm and fit bodies, hook up in a seemingly whirlwind romance. But when things get serious, there’s trouble. The trailer opens with Ranbir’s character talking about how easy it is to get into relationships these days, but hard to get out of them. So he details a convoluted plan about how the best way to get out of a relationship, is to make the girl feel like it’s her idea. Basically by planting seeds of suspicion and manipulating her in other ways. But then, he seemingly falls in love. The Hypocrisy And Double Standard In Tu Jhoothi Main Makkar Trailer As the trailer progresses with cool songs and an upbeat vibe, the second-half twist comes when things get serious. As Ranbir’s character falls in love, for reals, the couple starts marriage talks. This time, it’s Shraddha’s character who has doubts about the relationship. Her voiceover repeats exactly the same thing Ranbir said in the beginning. But her approach to breaking up is to make it seem like it’s the guy’s fault, while she maintains her innocence and remains on good terms with his family. So they both basically hook up for something casual and are both manipulating each other to get what they want. Which is fine. There is nothing wrong with characters who are grey and don’t have the typical hero/heroine attributes. The problems start when double standards rear their head. Apparently, Ranbir’s character has an issue with Shraddha’s character's approach to breaking up. The same tactic he boasted about earlier in the trailer, by the way. So he decides to ‘make her pay’ or something to that effect. So it’s fine when he’s bragging about being manipulative to end a relationship he doesn’t want. But if a woman treats him the same way, she must fear the wrath of man! Really? Luv Ranjan Has Done This Before https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qy0m-4meolQ The most upsetting part about the Tu Jhoothi Main Makkar trailer isn’t this particular movie or this story. It’s very easy to write off one movie that looks bad and move on with our lives. The issue here is that the writer-director Luv Ranjan has a disturbing trend of this kind of content in almost all his movies. The women characters in his movies are all depicted as shrewd, conniving and somehow threatening the masculinity of his male characters. Resulting in the men standing up for themselves and fighting back against the evil woman in their lives. Like, what?! His debut movie as a director, Pyar Ka Punchnama, as well as its sequel, both featured Karthik Aryan in a leading role. In many ways, Aryan was put on the map by Ranjan and his movies. But while the movies themselves were once again a male versus female perspective about relationships, love and life, it very much leaned one way. Aryan’s character famously has this long one-take monologue in both movies, where he basically craps on women. While the monologue itself is admirable, the content is extremely problematic. Ranjan then doubles down on his whole ‘women are evil’ viewpoint in this next directorial, Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety. The story is about how a man feels threatened when his best friend gets engaged to a confident and outspoken woman. The woman begins to influence the friend, her fiancee, to eat better, take care of himself, etc, the usual things in a relationship. But this level of control is apparently manipulative and evil, so the man takes it upon himself to free his friend from her clutches. I ask again: what?! Why Are We Still Getting Movies Like This In 2023? It’s baffling how these movies, which clearly seem to demonize women characters, are still being made in 2023. You would think that studios, producers and other creatives would be more aware of the optics of crafting a story where a man has to get payback from a woman. And then doing it repeatedly. It’s a troubling and disturbing thing that makes Bollywood movies so questionable, especially when, as a fan, you know they can do better. The more irresponsible thing about Ranjan’s films is that he packages these kinds of damaging ideas in very mainstream, lovable, bubbly aesthetics with great music and likeable stars. On the surface, the Tu Jhoothi Main Makkar trailer looks like a lot of fun. But if the trailer is an accurate representation of the story of the movie, then it’s hella problematic. And I don’t think Ranbir’s tanned abs are going to be able to make me ignore those issues. Tu Jhoothi Main Makkar releases in select theatres on March 8, 2023. What did you think about this trailer?
