Final Fantasy V Review

Year: 1992

Original Platform: Super Nintendo

Also available on: PlayStation One (Final Fantasy Anthology), Game Boy Advance, Steam (updated graphics)

Version I Played: Game Boy Advance

Synopsis:

Bartz is a drifter, riding across the world with his chocobo – Boko. One day, the wind seems to fall. Lenna’s father, the king of Tycoon, goes off to make sure the Wind Crystal is all right, but doesn’t return. Meanwhile, a meteorite falls. Lenna and Bartz check it out separately, where they find each other and a man named Galuf with amnesia. Together they figure out that the world is falling apart – the crystals that drive wind, fire, earth and water are dying out. They stumble upon a pirate hideout led by Faris, and together they seek to restore the world and uncover the mysterious forces behind the destruction of the crystals.

Background:

Once again, this Final Fantasy game was originally unreleased outside of Japan. Unlike II and III, the developers thought that the game was a different tone than the others and the vast job system would be too complicated for Western audiences. The West didn’t experience Final Fantasy V until 1999 with Playstation One’s Final Fantasy Anthology; a compilation of both V and VI. One notable change from the Japanese version is the name Bartz. The original name for Bartz in the Japanese release was translated as Butz, but because Americans are immature and laugh at such a name, they changed it in the localization to Bartz.

Gameplay:

Holy capitalism, Batman – so many jobs!

Not only that, but each job has abilities that you can mix and match! Every time you level up a job, you earn a new ability for that job. You can switch those abilities across jobs.

The possibilities are seemingly endless!

The gameplay is the most fun I had with customization in a while in any video game RPG. The best part is that the Job System is so rewarding by the time you reach the third act of the game. It gives you such a variety that it allows you to approach battles from many different angles. There’s no one way to be a badass and deal destructive damage.

It’s so much fun that once a year, Final Fantasy V gamers join in “Final Fantasy Five Four Job Fiesta”. It’s a challenge where you are randomly assigned four jobs in the game and have to finish the game ONLY with those four jobs. I’ve joined in the challenge myself and it’s a great way to come together with Final Fantasy players.

I had fun unlocking the legendary weapons and hunting down the most powerful summons - this time naturally without looking anything up. I find it interesting to say that I had legit fun hunting down all the extras. Sometimes in other Final Fantasy games I get weary over hunting for some extra, higher powered spells and summons. I sometimes even wonder if I should bother going after them. The vast Job System in Final Fantasy V keeps you occupied for the entire game and more. I finished the game and there are still some jobs that I haven't even touched. Luckily, the Game Boy Advance version adds some extra dungeons after you complete the game.

Graphics:

The sprites in this game look a bit rough around the edges. They also come off as too small in my opinion. The same is said of the Game Boy Advance version. Regardless, it now looks like an actual SNES game. Unlike Final Fantasy IV, it has more color, structure, and doesn’t look faded.

Something irked me though about the sounds. I never have anything bad to say about the sound effects, but for some reason, in this game, the battle sound effects were meek. Even when someone had a sword, the attack sounded puny.

The PlayStation One version has an FMV sequence that look awkward and ugly as fuck, just like the FMV sequence for the PlayStation One version of Final Fantasy IV. As much as I love Yoshitaka Amano, trying to transplant his style into 3D is not a good idea.

Story:

The story transcends that of Final Fantasy IV. Where Final Fantasy IV can feel weak or simple at times, Final Fantasy V delivers a strong, emotionally charged storyline.

It starts simple. Once again, the world is in danger because the crystals are in danger – but this time because humans are misusing their power and breaking them. So this is a rare Final Fantasy game without any evil empires or rebellions.

Out of all the Final Fantasy games, I had heard the least about what happens in V. Heck – I knew more about II before going into it, mostly because of what people said about the Star Wars parallels. It’s been a long time since I went into a Final Fantasy game completely blind. I kept it that way and was very pleasantly surprised.

I can see what the developers meant by a “change in tone.” Final Fantasy V is probably the funniest of them all. It’s not campy – just humorous. Galuf loves to share puns. Bartz can be a klutz. The characters bicker a lot during their journey. One part actually made me genuinely laugh out loud when you are in a certain underground place searching for clues:

Despite the lighter tone, each character has a pretty sensitive, delicate backstory. I cared for Bartz’s personal history with his parents. I worried about whether Lenna’s father would die or not. I wondered what Galuf forgot and who Faris really was. There are dashes of tropes here but none of them stand out too much. You have to remember that tropes themselves are not inherently bad – what matters is how you utilize them. There’s no hokey romantic subplot thrown in either, which is extremely rare in a JRPG.

It was so rewarding to go into it blind because there was even a shocking death. I thought maybe they would be all right in the end through some Disney cop out.

No. That person is dead. Dead as a door nail. Never coming back. I also enjoyed the bit where they tried to revive said dead person with spells and phoenix downs. They finally imply that there can be a point where someone can go beyond and it’s too late to bring them back.

The henchman Gilgamesh is very memorable and lovable, probably the most memorable character of the entire game. He serves as great comic relief while not being at all annoying. I kept hoping he would show up.

My only real complaint, if I’m ever forced to say anything bad, is that Boko wasn’t really an asset in the story, at least not as much as I assumed he would be.

The story is unfortunately very overlooked. I can understand that maybe at the time American and other Western gamers may have found the third act strange – especially after learning about the villain Exdeath’s true nature. Compared to the other Final Fantasy backstories, it’s a little out there, and something tells me it relates to Japanese mythology. But today? You’d be sorry to miss out on it.

Music:

Final Fantasy V’s main theme is somewhat reminiscent of Final Fantasy IV’s main theme. They have this melodic soaring feel with a continuous beat. “The Four Warriors of Dawn” in Final Fantasy V is reminiscent of “Red Wings” in IV. Meanwhile, the biggest and most interesting display is “Battle with Gilgamesh”. (sometimes titled “Clash/Battle on the Big Bridge”). The piece opens up with some intense drumming. While the later orchestrations and adaptations of “Battle with Gilgamesh” are pretty good, nothing seems to capture the tempo and umph of the original.

“Dear Friends” is probably the most endearing tune in the soundtrack. It’s played at the end and gives a really bittersweet feel. The Distant Worlds concert version is extremely bittersweet. It has a sweet, gentle guitar, and it reminds me of how Uematsu said one of his inspirations was Simon and Garfunkel. “Dear Friends” definitely has that folk tune.

Exdeath’s theme song gives a heavy rock vibe. That heavy rock vibe was last heard in the opening segment of the final boss fight in Final Fantasy IV. The rest of the score has a lot of drumming incorporated, partially due to the fact that pirates are involved in most of the plot. Ultimately, this Final Fantasy score broke out all of Uematsu’s classic and hard rock inspirations – and it’s fucking awesome.

Verdict:

Definite must-play. It’s the most underrated Final Fantasy game. The Kob System can be overwhelming, especially if you have never played a Final Fantasy game before. I wouldn’t suggest playing this for beginners – more after you get your hands wet.

Direct Sequel?

Yes. And No.

While not a video game, Final Fantasy V did receive an anime sequel titled Final Fantasy: Legend of the Crystals. It’s technically the first sequel to a Final Fantasy game. The anime is set 200 years in the future, with the heroes of the original game having become legend. Critical reception of the miniseries was mixed.

META: TODOROKI FUYUMI + COMPLEX PTSD.

this meta is gonna probably going to heavily reference child abuse and domestic abuse, so please don’t read if you’re vulnerable to those topics. i used a read more but i don’t think they’re working. ON TO THE META

complex ptsd ( c-ptsd ) generally develops as a result of chronic trauma, over months or years, most often experience throughout childhood; it’s rare ( but definitely not unheard of ! ) that it will develop in an adult, because, as the article i’m going to pick apart states, “ when an adult experiences a traumatic event, they have more tools to understand what is happening to them, their place as a victim of that trauma, and know they should seek support even if they don't want to. children don't possess most of these skills, or even the ability to separate themselves from another's unconscionable actions. the psychological and developmental implications of that become complexly woven and spun into who that child believes themselves to be -- creating a messy web of core beliefs much harder to untangle than the flashbacks, nightmares and other posttraumatic symptoms that come later. ”

emotion regulation. “ survivors with c-ptsd have a very difficult time with emotions -- experiencing them, controlling them, and for many, just being able to comprehend or label them accurately. many have unmanaged or persistent sadness, either explosive or inaccessible anger [...] they may be chronically numb, lack the appropriate affect in certain situations, be unable to triage sudden changes in emotional content [...] it's also very common for these survivors to re-experience emotions from trauma intrusively - particularly when triggered. these feelings are often disproportionate to the present situation, but are equal to the intensity of what was required of them at the time of a trauma -- also known as an emotional flashback. ”

the first things that stand out to me here: fuyumi easily fits the criteria of unmanaged or persistent sadness, but what really catches my eye is the concept of inaccessible anger. the boys very clearly fall under explosive anger, but fuyumi ... is seemingly never angry. it's a common point of contention in many posts i’ve seen about her; that she’s not reacting the way she should as a victim of abuse, that she “undermines” her brothers’ trauma by wanting to forgive her father. first of all i shouldn’t have to remind the fandom that she, too, is a victim of that abuse but it’s also entirely untrue that she’s disregarding her brothers because she even canonically identifies that she feels the same way they do - she identifies that yes, she is angry, yes, she understands they’re well within their rights to be so. but unlike them, this anger is ... far away. fuyumi, physically, emotionally, cannot bring that anger to the front. it’s frustrating for her, too.

i also want to point out the last sentence in this point: emotional flashbacks + the phrase “ what was require of them at the time of a trauma. ” an important thing to note is that often times, throughout fuyumi’s experience with these events … she’s the level-headed one. she’s the calm one. she’s the one mediating. this isn’t a new behavior - in an effort to mitigate her father’s abuse, this calm, peaceful nature is what these traumatic events have required of her, and as such, when anything begins to show potential for going wrong, she reverts back to this behavior.

explosive anger + disproportionate intensities in a certain situation definitely apply to natsuo; see the way he gets so angry over seemingly minute comments. touya / dabi is just. all over the place w/ this one he’s in all of it

difficulty with self-perception. “ in its simplest form, how they see themselves versus how the rest of the world does can be brutally different. some may feel they carry or actually embody nothing but shame and shameful acts - that they are "bad". others believe themselves to be fundamentally helpless; they were let down by so many who could've stopped their abuse but didn't [...] many see themselves as responsible for what happened to them [...] and, countless others may feel defined by stigma, believe they are nothing more than their trauma, worry they're always in the way or a burden, or they may sense they're just completely and utterly different from anyone or anything around them - they are alien. startling as it is, all of these feelings and more can live inside someone whom, to you, seems like the most brilliant, competent, strong, and compassionate human being you know. ”

she holds herself partially responsible for her father’s abuse - this is ALSO outright stated as canon, as seen here and here. the idea of helplessness, and particular bringing in the idea of learned helplessness ( thank u @/unsighty for pointing that out ) is ALSO very important to note here ... note in the shifuku page she says, “ i couldn’t do anything for shouto. ” both fuyumi AND natsuo also probably struggle with the idea of being a burden ( that neglect says hello ! ) / being in the way, too.

i also really like this note about how these feelings can be present in someone labeled “ brilliant, competent, strong, and compassionate ” ... because that’s exactly what fuyumi is seen as.

interruptions in consciousness. “ some may forget traumatic events (even if they knew of them once before), relive them intrusively, recall traumatic material in a different chronological order, or other distressing experiences of what is called dissociation. dissociation is a symptom that exists on a spectrum, ranging anywhere from harmless daydreaming or temporarily "spacing out"; to more disruptive episodes of feeling disconnected from one's body or mental processes, not feeling real, or losing time; all the way to the most severe, which includes switching between self-states (or alters), as is seen in dissociative identity disorder. episodes of missing time can range anywhere from a few minutes, a couple days, or even large chunks of one's childhood. The larger gaps in time are typically only seen in did, but those with c-ptsd alone can still endure 'interruptions in consciousness' that result in memory gaps, poor recall, traumatic material that is completely inaccessible, or, conversely, re-experiencing trauma against their will (e.g. flashbacks, intrusive images, body memories, etc.). ”

while this is definitely a symptom we see more of in shouto ( my boy is dissociating 24/7 ) , fuyumi experiences it sometimes as well. memory gaps, poor recall, and particularly re-experiencing trauma applies to fuyumi here - i think by and large she deals with intrusive imagery; i.e., while she’s in the kitchen, if she hears shouto nearby, or sometimes if she hears the kettle whistling / crying on the tv, she gets a flood of memories of shouto and her mother on the floor in the kitchen.

i think dabi can definitely be HEAVILY attributed to the idea of these losses in time, disconnecttions and self-states - and like with fuyumi, he definitely experiences intrustive imagery. we see that here, i think.

difficulty with relationships. “ this refers more to a survivor's potential to feel completely isolated from peers and not even knowing how to engage, to harboring an outright refusal to trust anyone (or just not knowing why they ever should), trusting people way too easily (including those who are dangerous, due to a dulled sense of alarm), perpetually searching for a rescuer or to do the rescuing, seeking out friends and partners who are hurtful or abusive because it's the only thing that feels familiar, or even abruptly abandoning relationships that are going well for any number of reasons. ”

fuyumi, first of all, definitely struggles to know how to engage with her peers. she’s outgoing and clearly a people person - so it’s often a question why she’s so nervous and struggles to make relationships and ... well. here’s why.

i don’t think fuyumi outright refuses to trust anyone, but there is intense hesitance and unsureness, particular for certain groups of people: men, people who are much taller & bigger than her, people who have some kind of fire affinity / ability, and people who are loud. the idea of perpetually searching for a rescuer, or to do the rescuing ... while typically you might think she falls under the former ( and i think she does, in a way. fuyumi never talks about her trauma, but her concept of love ties into this - someone who can take her away from her father, someone who has the power to do that? someone who is unafraid of him, or someone that he has no hold over? yeah. looking @ kenta n nishiki w this one ), fuyumi also searches to do the rescuing. once again i’m referencing this page - “ she became a teacher to compensate the fact that she couldn’t protect her younger brother. ”

i’m also pointing at the “dulled sense of alarm” - in my canon, fuyumi, for example, went out and put herself in the way of danger and met with less than savory contacts in an attempt to find information on dabi, once she got the inkling he might be touya.

obviously shouto and natsuo also have this urge to rescue, and dabi doesn’t trust anyone.

the perception of one's perpetrators. “ this can be one of the most insidious battles for some survivors with c-ptsd -- even if it seems crystal clear to those on the outside. victims of such prolonged trauma may eventually surrender, assuming their abuser(s) total power over them, possibly even maintaining this belief once they're 'free'. "i'll always be under their thumb, they call all the shots, they may even know what's best for me more than i ever will." others may feel deep sadness or profound guilt at just the thought of leaving them - including long after they've successfully left, if they were able. some may remain transfixed by their abuser's charming side or the warm public persona that everyone loves; it may feel truly impossible to think ill of them. many hold a constant longing for their abusers to just love them - craving their praise well into adulthood, slaving away in their personal lives just to make them proud. alternatively, there are others who may obsess about them angrily, holding only hatred and disdain for them to the point of persistent bitterness and/or vengefulness. some can even stir desires to seek that revenge. (though, it should be clearly noted that it's not at all common for them to actually do so. It's more about the thoughts than the actions.)

many survivors can have a primary, more surface-layer set of thoughts and feelings about their perpetrator(s), particularly when asked. they may know what they're "supposed to say" or "supposed to feel", and then follow suit. but it's helpful to know that a collection of all these responses can, and often does, coexist within one person, vacillating between extremes underneath what's shown to the world or even to themselves. day to day, and year to year, their feelings may shift - and - what the survivor knows to be true intellectually versus what they feel emotionally may remain incongruent for a very long time. ”

OKAY SO. THAT’S A BIG ONE. THAT’S A LOT TO READ. but i think it’s very, very important to fuyumi’s reaction to her trauma, and also to the fandom misconceptions of her. fuyumi clearly is very attached to her father. there’s no denying that. and the particular sentences that stand out to me here are “some may remain transfixed by their abuser’s charming side or public persona” and “they know what they’re supposed to feel”. i’ve said continuously that her father being a hero, and one so well-known and praised at that, has HEAVILY affected her views of him ! as a child fuyumi conflagrated his public persona as the “real” him. she struggled with this...... idea that his violence + aggression were a kind of "fake" version of him - aka "that's not the real him", "he's not always like that", "he used to be a lot nicer", etc. etc. and it’s only as she got older that she moved away from this line of thinking, though she still catches herself with it now and then. and, of course, fuyumi only ever wanted his attention and praise. she worked tirelessly to please him, trying to get him to come to her skating competitions, getting top marks in school, attending todai, always having dinner on the table in spite of her obligations.

it’s also so important to note the second paragraph in this section. fuyumi knows she should be enraged, she should want nothing to do with him, but that’s just ... really difficult for her, i think, especially when unlike shouto and natsuo, she remains in that environment. so there’s this disconnect between her desire for his love + making him proud, to defend him, to make their family “whole” again vs. the knowledge that she shouldn’t want anything to do with him.

natsuo holds that persistent bitterness, and dabi definitely wants revenge so um. yes. next point

one's 'system of meanings'. “ of the many, many well-observed developmental disruptions those with c-ptsd face, one that many find to be the toughest to conquer [...] is what's referred to as one's 'system of meanings' ; an area that, after being subjected to such tumultuous trauma, can feel almost irreparable. what this criterion is referring to is the struggle to hold on to any kind of sustaining faith or belief that justice will ever be served to indiscretions of ethics and morality. these survivors' outlook on life and the world at large can be unfairly contorted, and understandably so.

they may doubt there is any goodness or kindness in the world that isn't selfish-hearted. they may worry they'll never find forgiveness. others may even believe they only came to this world to be hurt, so there can be no good coming for them. this level of hopelessness and despair, as well as these greater meanings assigned to their suffering, can fluctuate greatly over time. there may even come several years where things no longer feel so bleak or as though they were conned of a meaningful life. but, as more layers of trauma are processed in therapy, or new memories bubble to the surface, they may wrestle with it once more as new feelings strike a devastating chord inside their chest. this is a common experience for so many survivors, and can have lasting ramifications with each plunge. ”

this point is, clearly, much more extreme in her brothers. shouto’s aggravation at being reprimanded for breaking the law when it meant doing good; natsuo’s clear resentment of heroes; and this one is, of course, most prevalent in dabi. see: “ the struggle to hold on to any kind of sustaining faith or belief that justice will ever be served to indiscretions of ethics and morality, ” or “ they may doubt there is any goodness or kindness in the world that isn't selfish-hearted. they may worry they'll never find forgiveness. ” LIKE HELLO. the hatred of heroes, the idolization of stain. SCREAMS DABI

i think fuyumi’s ‘system of meanings’ is ... much less disturbed than her brothers’ ( COUGH DABI COUGH ), but there still is some disruption there. by and large, fuyumi still believes that the good in the world outweighs the bad - but the disruption in her belief is also going to be that the hero system is a falsity, it’s a sham, it’s glorified and she inherently dislikes the concept of heroism.

Love After the Fact Chapter 57: Wasting Time with a New Friend

Lotor makes some new friends. Together, they discover that word of Lance and Keith's union has reached video game developers in the worst, best way.

Featuring Leakira in the role of comic relief (Not to offend Leakira fans, this is meant to be a fun, happy place. I just thought it might be funny little detail) XD

Lotor finds them sleeping in a hallway. A much-needed distraction.

More specifically, it’s an adolescent Olkari with orange feelers, dressed in green and white garb stained with red dust. They’re incredibly small, even for a smaller species. Pretty adorable, like a wolf cub.

So obviously he nudges them with his foot.

“Can I help you?” the kit growls, amber eyes glaring up at him.

“You’re sleeping in a hallway.”

“And? What’s your point?”

“... You know what? I’m not really sure.”

With a groan, the kit sits up, tugging on their feelers. “So what are you up to, Mr. Prince?”

“Oh not much. Wandering around, looking for trouble.” He’s actually looking for a distraction, but that’s almost the same thing as trouble.

“Trouble, huh?” The Olkari smirks. “I’m Pidge. Lance’s resident tech genius and vent crawler- I mean spy.”

“Ah-haha, I see. You’re one of his ‘associates’.” Lotor grins, helps Pidge to their feet.

“Yes. Working for Lance usually involves some level of trouble. What are the princes up to today, anyway?”

“Lance is with Allura. She’s having a hard morning. Keith is with Thace, our emergency medic and reproductive specialist.”

“Oh, really? Making sure his junk works?”

“That’s the idea. Why?”

“It’d be awesome to have some dirt on Keith. He’s just so perfect.” Pidge skips down the hallway, a curious prince following behind them. “The worst thing he’s done is drink a bit too much, find his happy place at a party, and get really snuggly with Lance.”

Following Pidge into what should have been an old, empty storeroom, Lotor’s eyes widen in surprise. The typically ignored room is set up with monitors and a work table covered with Balmeran crystals and a few other tools.

“Where did you get some of these tools?” he asks, eyeing a choice laser of Galra design.

“I crawled through the tunnels underneath the actual labs and stole them. I’m welcome in the labs, of course. I just don’t want to share my work with them. The field of science is rife with thieves.”

“You found the tunnels already?” Lotor stares. There are tunnels all under the mountain, his ancestors making the massive peak into an insect hive. There are escape tunnels and hidden caches and underground pools and even a forge made of volcanic glass that he discovered as a small boy.

He still likes to go down there on the rare occasion he can find the time. Someday, he’ll take his children down there, and tell them all about the stories carved into the ancient walls.

“Yep! Anyway, let’s see if I can hack into Thace’s equipment. And by that I mean give me like, thirty ticks because I can definitely do it.” While Pidge types away on their computer, Lotor sits himself on the floor, eyeing a faint square cut into the stone. Most people don’t notice, don’t know to look for the fine edges carved into the floor. “Ooh… Interesting.”

“What’s interesting?” Lotor asks. “Is Keith okay?”

“You really care for him, don’t you?” Amber eyes smile at him, intuitive.

“Of course I do! He’s my cousin! And my friend!” And he has more than his fair share of health problems. Lotor himself was not a healthy kit, so he understands the worries that his cousin might have.

“Aw-w. You’re just a big ol’ sweetheart, aren’t ya?” Pidge turns back to their computer. “What’s interesting is that Keith is… surprisingly healthy. His weight and body mass index are good… Thace is optimistic about a successful pregnancy.”

“Why is that interesting?” Lotor scratches his head, frowning a little.

“Because our boys requested contraceptives, probably due to health concerns.”

“Miscarriage risks are higher for him. That’s partially due to his sex, and partially due to his condition. Do you think they’ll use contraceptives?”

“Pfft. No. They’re young, they’re stupid, and they both want pups. I doubt Lance can keep it in his pants.”

“What about Keith?”

“He’s shy.” Pidge shrugs like that explains everything. It kind of does. Keith’s priorities are probably more of the cuddling variety than the ‘aggressive hugging’ variety. “Can I have some of your blood?”

“Hm? Uh… How much blood?”

“I dunno. A few vials? Maybe I’ll swab your cheek too? It might help with my experiments.”

“And what might those be?”

“I’m trying to invent Altean-friendly prosthetics. It’s not going well. Alteans are stupid inside and out.” Pidge gathers their tools to stick him, and Lotor stares. This tiny little Olkari is far more than they appear. “Who do you think will kill Lance for getting Keith pregnant? Krolia or Shiro?”

But they're young, still playful and carefree.

“Hm… My money’s on Krolia. Or the creepy friend.”

“Adam? Oh, he’s softer than he looks. More likely he’ll live vicariously through their children and terrorize anyone who tries to mess with them.” Pidge sticks a swab in his cheek as they fill a second vial with his blood. “Your fangs are adorable.”

“Thanks?” Lotor regards them. “So you do science, you do people… What don’t you do?”

“Relationships.” Pidge cleans the crook of his arm, bandaging the spot where they bled him. “And genders. Those are for more primitive individuals.”

Lotor laughs. “More highly evolved, are you?”

“Exactly. Unlike Alteans. Stupid, scaley assholes with stupid, cranky cells.”

“I don’t get it. What exactly is the problem?” Lotor peers over Pidge’s shoulder as they examine his cells under their microscope.

“Not sure, but Alteans have some odd properties that make their biology incompatible with metal, coral, bone, wood, and other prosthetic materials. When used, the Altean’s cells refuse to accept the forgein material, even if it’s biocompatible. Hence, their cells are stupid.”

“So it would seem. How are my cells?”

“Hm… I'll have to run some of my own, secret tests. I may try to culture your skin cells to figure out how it all works.”

“Have at it. Can I interest you in a secret?”

“Always!” The young Olkari’s eyes shine, eager to learn. To know. A person after his own heart.

“Most of Altea’s technology is rediscovered. Thousands of decaphoebs ago, there was what’s known as The Forgetting. The Altean’s powers were quite suddenly drastically altered, and their society descended into chaos. Much of their technology was lost, then rediscovered within the last few milophoebs.”

“No fucking way!”

“Way. This includes their lauded Teludav technology.”

“Those fakers! How have I not heard of this?”

“I know! It’s their best kept secret. Also, beneath Mount Sil’brana is a petrified forest.”

“Oh, that’s so cool!” Pidge makes a note on their datapad. “I wonder… I don’t know if I could interface with that or not. Probably not, since it’s no longer organic, but then again perhaps I could reach the echo?”

“Echo?”

“All organic life leaves behind an echo. Sometimes, I can reach that echo. I’d be great at solving murders!”

“Well, if ever I am murdered, do find my killer. I’m sure my wife would appreciate it.”

“Unless she did the murdering,” Pidge snickers.

“Some days, it wouldn’t surprise me at all. She’d say it’s my fault, but…”

“Pregnancy.”

“Yeah. How do you think Keith will be when he gets pregnant?”

“He’s relatively mild-mannered as long as Lance keeps him happy, so either unbelievably psychotic or unbearably sweet.”

“He is really sweet. I honestly didn’t expect it when he first arrived. Lance is a little… He’s reserved, but also high-strung at the same time?”

“He definitely can be. But he can also be very playful. Those two are either quiet and reserved together, or cutting up and goofing off together. But Lance is the high-strung one, for sure. Keith just wants to know whose head to crack open. Lance wants to know every single little detail about everything.”

“So he’s a control freak.”

“Little bit, yeah. We’ve all got our thing.” Pidge smiles. “But Lance gave me a home when mine was lost. He had no reason to do that. He didn’t know what I was capable of.”

“I had assumed you were on Altea for research?” Lotor's curious, but won't push.

“No. Though I do enjoy research. For example, I have the new Phantasm Killbot game. I just got to the first visual novel part where they introduce the characters and their little side plots and all. Wanna help me out? For research?” The Olkari holds up a controller.

“Yeah alright. Anything for research.” Lotor takes the controller, waits for the character introduction screen. He’s played this game before. “Player one… Leandro.”

“Player Two… Akira.”

The screen loads.

“Uh… That’s… Interesting. Is that- Does that look like Lance to you?” It really does, at least to Lotor. The only difference is that ‘Leandro’ has brown hair and his scales are a very pale blue.

“Wow, that’s weird. Okay. Let’s see where this goes- Oh my fuck, this is going to be good.”

Lotor can’t help but agree, staring at a screen of a smirking ‘Leandro’ lounging with a wide-eyed Galra presumably named ‘Akira’. The Galra has purple hair and golden irises, dressed in what might loosely be referred to as clothing.

It’s exceptionally weird, even weirder given that Akira is the name of Keith’s father, Lotor’s uncle.

“I cannot wait to tell my cousin about this,” Lotor breathes, coming to the realization of exactly what’s before him.

“Yes! We have to! Right now!” Pidge stands, tugs on his arm.

“Well, let’s not be too hasty.” Lotor stares at the screen, that mischievous part of his brain clicking and whirring. “I mean, we have to do our research, right?”

“You know…” Pidge taps their chin. “You might be onto something.”

“I mean it’s just courtesy, right? Making sure we can give them all the information we possibly can?”

“You’re absolutely right. Okay, so you get first choice for dialogue and it looks like Not-Keith has a prompt for us.”

“Oh, gods. Okay, I am so sorry, Keith… Let’s see, here.”

…

Akira: We can’t keep meeting like this. What if people find out?

Leandro: I’m a prince, my sweet. I do what I want.

Akira: But you could be killed!

Leandro: You’re worth dying for.

Leandro: It’s my fault, anyway. I just couldn’t resist you.

Akira: It’s not your fault. I let you have me.

Leandro: You should let me have you again.

Akira: Please… I need it…

*Kiss Passionately*

Leandro: Oh, my sweet. You’re in season!

Akira: Make love to me, and I will give you a son.

“I feel dirty,” Lotor mutters. “This is what’s passing for entertainment right now?”

“It’s so bad! I love it!” Pidge snickers.

“Lance is going to be mortified.”

“No, he won’t.” The two new friends turn to see Adam leaning in the doorway, smirking.

“And why, pray tell, is that?” Lotor asks, one eyebrow almost reaching his hairline.

“Lance is bigger than that. He’ll be filled with a sense of… well-being.”

“Oh, gross! Adam!” Pidge chucks a wrench at the Altean’s head, the trio laughing as he dodges, then retrieves it for them. “I don’t want to hear about my friend’s dick!”

“Am I wrong?”

“No, and I hate it.” Pidge drags Adam to the floor, sits in his lap. “Okay, you can help us. What should Leandro say next? ‘A daughter would be fine’ or ‘Honor me with the gift of your flesh’?”

“Who the quiznak wrote this?” Adam mutters. “And we want ‘Honor me with the gift of your flesh.’”

“I don’t know, but I will find out. And kill them,” Lotor mutters.

“Easy on the instincts, Mr. Prince.” Pidge continues to the next cut scene.

“It’s nothing to do with instincts! I just hate that I had to read that!” Lotor sighs. “At least that cut scene is over. Now we have… Brothers, Sven and Kuron? Lots of new characters for this one.”

Adam blinks, gaping at the screen. “What. The fuck-”

Allura sighs, running a hand through her loose curls. It's been a rough morning, one that doesn't promise to get easier. A howling chorus of laughter cuts through her stressed thoughts. Cracking open a storeroom, she spies her husband, Adam, and Pidge laughing away at a video game.

"I wOuLd DiE fOr AkIrA," Pidge mocks, cackling.

"Leandro, please!" Lotor laughs, cutting through a false simper as he pretends to swoon. "I couldn't live without you!"

"That's such a toxic sentiment, honestly." Adam shakes his head, but his eyes are glittering bright.

Shaking her head, Allura leans in the doorway, settling a hand on her slightly protruding stomach. Life is never perfect, not for anyone. But seeing her husband playing around and having fun with their friends -his new friends- suggests that everything might still turn out alright. Or at least, not as awful as it sometimes seems.

That familiar dense fluid inexorably dropped out of the crystal bottleneck, its dark stream harmonically danced, giving birth to an indefinite number of small whirlpools, before steadily falling into the compact glass held in Arthur’s trembling hand. His gaze followed the whole process with noxious attention, those few moments stretched out in his blue eyes, till it seemed like it took an eternity for the whisky to brim over his cup, and, during that distorted time, he somehow managed to find some numb peace, alienating his haunted mind from the thundering world around him. Nevertheless, when even the last drop run its course, that usual asphyxiating chaos, along with his compulsive thoughts, returned to fill his ears, destructively afflicting his brain again. That had been a long rough night at the Garrison, and finally, nearly at the crack of dawn, he was allowed to seek a little solace by sitting alone at the table in their private room and downing his umpteenth glass of liquor, yet no relief came for him as he couldn’t help but think about his only excruciating obsession: you. Your mother had always been Polly’s closest friend, for which reason you practically grew up around the Shelbys, easily becoming part of their family since you truly loved all of them like your own siblings, and they just felt the same way about you; however, it turned out to be even easier for you to mercilessly steal the callous heart of their oldest brother. Indeed, Arthur had been madly in love with you for as long as he could remember, what irreparably bound him to you was such a strong feeling, that the cruel war itself hadn’t been able to weaken it, not in the slightest; still, after all those years, he couldn’t find the guts to come clean about his incommensurable affection for you. Actually, the mere thought of telling you the truth terrified him: every time he looked in the mirror, he only saw a rude, pathetic man unworthy of a wonderful, sweet creature like you, he knew he could never give you what you really deserved, he knew he just was not enough, and he definitely hated the idea of making you unhappy by forcing you to remain stuck with such a wreck for the rest of your life. Anyway, during that long time, he had learnt how to cope with his difficult feelings, he had gradually become able to hide them, eventually finding a way to stay by your side without going crazy; but that night, when you entered the pub holding hands with an unknown bloke, when he noticed the way you smiled while looking into his brown eyes, every single piece of his frail soul fell apart all over again, leaving him devastated and close to a new mental breakdown. Once more, his chest seemed to unnaturally collapse under the weight of that terrible realization, pain radiating through his whole body as he tried to get rid of that dreadful sensation by slightly shaking his head. Yet, nothing changed, everything in that moment felt just like a flashback of the war, the booze together with that deep sorrow were dangerously tricking his mind, leading him to hear inaudible noises and sense inconsistent hands strangling him almost to death. Still partially aware of what was going on in his brains, and eager to break free from those mental chains, he inconsiderately took from his pocket the small blue ampoule Finn had given him, pouring its deadly white content on the table and hastily cutting it, before he could inhale the Tokyo with such violence that, soon after, blood started to fall from his left nostril. Arthur stood there for a while, in religious silence, with his wide eyes turned at the ceiling in a mute prayer to that God who had apparently forgotten about him long before that day, nevertheless he prayed for the world to stop wildly spinning around him, and when nothing happened, again, he couldn’t hold back his deleterious ire anymore. Before he had the chance to realize what he was doing, he found himself rabidly throwing the massive wooden table against the closed door, along with its four chairs and several empty bottles, his palms now covered in blood and wounded by uncountable glass shards. In the meanwhile, the main salon of the Garrison was occupied only by Finn and Isaiah, busy playing cards and drinking beer, excited to be finally allowed to stay up late at night, yet, as soon as that loud crash reached his ears, Finn dropped everything without a second thought and, utterly immersed in a blind panic, he promptly run towards the blinders private space, for his mind was already picturing the worst possible scenario. The youngest Shelby used all his strength, he kept kicking the barred door and ramming into it, until he knocked it off the hinges and barged into the room right away, finding Arthur alone in the middle of the place, crimson drops rolling down his fingers and a disoriented look on his tormented face. “Jesus Christ, Arthur! What happened? Are you okay?” Anxious breaths left the boy’s lips as he swiftly approached his brother, paying attention to avoid that mess made of sharp splinters and jagged pieces of wood, he meticulously checked that no serious harm had occurred and soon sighed with pure relief, still, when he tried to fraternally place a hand on Arthur’s arm, an impetuous shove threw him against the opposite wall. “Go away, Finn! Get the fucking out of here!” Still dazed due to the violent collision, Finn simply looked at him for a brief moment, he was beside himself, foaming at the mouth as he took dangerous steps in his direction, thus the young man managed to get back on his feet as fast as he could and escape that room without a backward glance. Anyway, he didn’t get to walk past the doorstep, because his face unexpectedly came in contact with Tommy’s chest; apparently, the middle brother had abandoned his accounting ledgers, alarmed by those same loud noises. “You’re the only one who can do something, I-I tried to help him, I tried! But he wouldn’t let me, p-please...” Tom lovingly gave him a pat on the shoulder, bringing his restless rambling to an end and flashing him a sympathetic smile, before he gently smacked his freckled cheek two times as a sign of gratification. “It’s all right, kid. You did good, go home now, eh? I’m taking care of this” Finn nodded keeping his eyes down as he rejoined Isaiah in order to leave the pub, Thomas, instead, just leaned against the doorframe and calmly lit a cigarette, while his sceptical gaze remained on Arthur who, on the other hand, keeled over the floor with both his hands covering his face. “Would you mind explaining what the bloody hell is going on?” Tommy’s stoic tone didn’t change a shade as he greedily sucked down the bleak smoke and watched his sibling squirm on the ground, screaming out all of his frustration. “It’s y/n, Tommy! It’s always been her” His voice cracked for a few moments, overwhelmed by a cry bereft of tears. “I-I can’t bear to see another’s bloody hands on her skin, Tommy, I just can’t. This... she is- she is driving me insane, brother!” Arthur’s fists collided multiple times with his own face as he continued to desperately alternate heavy sobs and gruesome wailings, until Thomas reached for him, roughly lifting him up by harpooning his jacket collar, he managed to get him to stand up, more determined than ever to put some sense back into his dizzy head.

“Hey!” His hoarse voice raised and he buried the fingers of his right hand in his brother’s cheeks, so that the strong grip on his face obliged Arthur to look into Tom’s stern icy eyes as they brutally delved into his tormented conscience. “You are Arthur fucking Shelby! If you want something, you fucking take it, because you fucking can!” Those words left Tommy’s mouth in a proper roar, still they were not enough to fix that tragic situation, in fact, a couple of seconds later, Arthur reacted to that sudden assault and violently pushed him away, before going back to cover his face with his palms, in attempt to shut down all the demons riddling his mind. “She doesn’t love me! Don’t you get it? She never will, goddamn, look at me!”

A loud husky laugh echoed through the room, leading Arthur to raise his head, glancing at Thomas in disbelief. “Are you laughing? You ‘fucking laughing at me?!” Before Arthur could physically attack him, Tommy stopped his laughter and cleared his throat, it was impressive how, in a single instant, he was always able to get his usual severe expression back. “Yeah, I’m laughing, Arthur. I am, because y/n’s been dying for you since the bloody first grade, that girl’s been trying to get your attention in every possible way” Tom’s index finger menacingly pointed at his brother’s chest while he kept shouting in his confused face “And she started dating that cunt since she was sure you would’ve never fancied her, ‘cause she’s fucking blind, just as you are! You damn idiots!”

Arthur’s blue eyes unrealistically widened in shock as his bran processed that absurd load of information, he started frenetically walking up and down the room, diving his fingers in his long hair in order to relax a bit.

“She is... Is s-she... Oh my fucking God! I need to see her, w-where is she, Tommy? Did she leave with that prick? I swear I’ll cut his hands off if he dares touch her...” The influence of cocaine on his brain was made clear by his frantic delirium, he kept bouncing from one place to another with a look halfway between enthusiastic and frightened, so that Thomas had to stop him by slightly poking the sweaty back of his neck in order to have his attention again. “She’s at Polly’s with Ada. They’re probably drunk, but so are you, now just go and take what’s yours, for God’s sake!”

Name: Katherine Delaney

Age: 24

Race: Half-elf (Eladrin/Human)

Class: College of Glamour Bard

Sexuality/Pronouns: Bisexual Polyamorous, She/Her

Short Bio:

Katherine is an anxious young adult half-elf with a love for performing, particularly dancing, but with a lack of confidence in her abilities. Though captivating on stage, with a great amount of talent and the ability to charm those who watch her, off-stage she is usually nervous and stressed. She carries an extreme amount of guilt, and could almost be mistaken for a completely different person if it weren’t for the eye-catching clothing she usually wears and the natural charisma she still holds.

When fully in her element, she makes large expressive movements that are expected of a performer. Most of the time, however, she attempts to make herself look small. Despite this, her movements still have a dance-like quality to them even at her least confident. Even movements that should seem hard to someone of her stature often look elegant due to her training in acrobatics having taught her how to make such tasks look fluid and impressive as long as she doesn’t overthink too much.

Physical Description:

Katherine is about the same height as the average human woman her age (a couple of inches taller than the average half-elf) and below-average weight, her thinness being especially clear due to her lack of muscle mass. Though most people write off her lighter weight as a side effect of her elven heritage, despite the idea of elves being extremely slender being a stereotype. In fact, the only true, easy to spot sign of her elven blood is her long, pointed ears.

Her bronzed skin is covered in freckles and she has a tattoo on the right side of her stomach, a large outline of a moth done in purple ink.

She has long brown hair that goes to halfway down her stomach, thick and wavy in texture. She usually wears it loose, making sure to take care of it but usually not styling it. However, when she performs, she will normally tie it back at least into a ponytail to keep it out of her face, putting it in more elaborate hairstyles for larger performances.

Her eyes are brown, and when she uses the magic contained in her necklace, they appear this way. However normally (without the necklace’s powers), they discoloured and pale, with glowing golden crack-like scars over them.

Outfits:

Katherine usually wears a dancer’s outfit made up of a crop top and shorts as a base layer, along with a secondary layer made up of see-through fabrics. The secondary layer has a skirt and material that she clips onto her top and ties around her wrists, being simply for fashion and effect while performing rather than to keep warm as sleeves would. Most of the outfit is different shades of yellow, though the skirt is purple. The material isn’t as expensive as an outfit she may wear to a social event, but it is made to be performed in, sparklingly when light is shined on it. Despite it’s intended usage, it is still suitable for travelling in. It is not her fanciest performance outfit, nor her outfit most suited for travelling, but it is one that she feels comfortable in.

She has a few accessories she will wear on a day to day basis. The first is a pair of golden earrings, shaped vaguely like moths. They are large and dangle, though they certainly aren’t the showiest pair of earrings Katherine owns or that she could afford. However, they are her favourite pair.

The second is a silver brooch with a hummingbird design etched into it. It was a gift from her brother, and she keeps it close despite the guilt she has associated with him. She will usually find somewhere to wear it, typically on her skirt though she will move it around to a position where it feels comfortable.

The last is a golden two-tier necklace, with the upper tier having a crescent moon charm and the lower having a hollow crystal filled with a blue liquid. The liquid within the crystal is magic, being a combination of water from an enchanted lake and her own blood. In this form, the liquid offers her the temporary ability to cover scars and restore her eyesight, with Katherine being blind without its aid.

Interests:

Katherine loves dancing, as well as playing instruments and singing, but her main focus for performing is dancing. She started performing quite young, long before she associated it magic or making money, though now she uses it as a means for both. She finds it brilliant and freeing, with it being one of the few things she feels confident doing. Though she has always loved dancing, she knows some of the other nobles (though luckily only those outside of her family) don’t approve and think she should focus on her instruments and singing, using her love for dancing as just another reason to see her as not belonging.

She also has an interest in learning about fae lore, though much of the information she finds is speculation at best and complete myth more often than not. This hasn’t stopped her from making some real progress, managing to learn Sylvan (the traditional language of the fae) and even some old fae songs, songs that she will sometimes perform, though only to the rare audiences she believes will actually listen. Such an interest has recently become even greater, as when her magic started linking to her performances, it also started linking to her feywild at the same time, granting her the abilities to enthral audiences and while making herself appear to have an otherworldly beauty.

Important Relationships:

Lord Robert Delaney. (He/Him)

A middle-aged human man, Robert is the current Lord of the Delaney Estate and Katherine’s adoptive father. He usually wears an old sailor’s coat that he earned back in his adventurer days, one of the few things he earned that he can show off on a day to day basis. He is a smart man who now spends much of his time on his noble duties and taking care of his family.

He adopted Katherine when she was four years old, her birth parents being some of his old adventuring companions. There have always been rumours this wasn’t true, that Katherine was actually his bastard child since the two look quite alike. Though there isn’t any truth to these rumours, he doesn’t have much of a way to disprove them so he simply does his best to assure Katherine that he wouldn’t lie to her and ignore those who believe he would.

He was the one who gave Katherine her necklace, having gone out of his way to research magic to help her. He was partially driven due to his and his wife’s belief that she wasn’t born blind. Though he hasn’t managed too much research into what may have happened to her, both due to not having a real starting point and guilt over what people he once called friends may have done to a child, to his daughter. He does his best to ignore the worse of these thoughts, hoping that whatever happened (if anything happened at all) was an accident.

Lady Anja Delaney. (She/Her)

A middle-aged human woman, Anja is the current Lady of the Delaney Estate, having married Robert shortly after the two stopped adventuring. She met him when the two were young adults, after he helped her family with a blight infestation. She ended up adventuring with him for a short while during which time, the two grew extremely close. She is a very compassionate woman, who wears glasses and has a nose to ear chain piercing.

She has always loved Katherine, even before they adopted her, having seen her any time Robert’s old adventuring companions had visited him. She would usually look after the young girl while her husband caught up with his old friends, letting her play with her and Robert’s son. It always sat wrong with her that Katherine was suddenly blind when they adopted her, but she also had little way to prove whatever had happened had been intentional or even recent.

She introduced Katherine to quite a few fae myths, which she found fascinating and started studying in her free time. She also encourages her daughter’s other hobbies, despite how she knew some of the other nobles looked down on her dancing (as they looked down on her in general for being adopted and therefore not of noble blood). But Anja does her best to encourage her, as performance seems to be the only time her daughter is happy and confident and seeing her riddled with anxieties hurts her, especially with how much worse her anxieties seem to have gotten over time.

Rupert Delaney. (He/Him)

A human three years older than Katherine, Rupert is her older brother and heir to the Delaney Estate. He is trained as a druid and has an affinity for hummingbirds. While he isn’t the most intelligent man, he cares a lot about his family and knows how to read people. He is particularly protective of his sister. He is quite attractive, being muscular, having the same bronzed skin tone as Katherine, with relatively long red hair. He has the habit of wearing shirts that show off his abs, though he seems slightly obvious to the fact that he does this. After the recent events (usually referred to as ‘the Dragon incident’ to avoid having to relive the details), he now has scarring across the right side of his face and is missing his right eye.

He has always been protective of his sister, wanting to help her through her anxieties in whatever way he can. While his ways of doing so aren’t always effective, he can usually tell when his sister is upset to at least try to help her. Even when she won’t tell him exactly what’s wrong, he does his best. When he started adventuring, he didn’t want to leave her behind but he did his best to visit often, to tell her about his travels and encourage her about her magic when she started showing the ability to cast. When she started getting ready to leave for her own adventures, he did his best to build her confidence.

He never expected her own adventuring to go so wrong, to have no idea of how to make her feel safe. “The Dragon incident.” It broke her confidence so quickly, and while she few physical wounds, she still hasn’t recovered mentally. Staying at home made her just feel worst, so she made plans to leave to do anything so long as it wasn’t staying still, though the idea of adventuring still turned her stomach. When he realised, she was on the verge of leaving, he gifted her the hummingbird brooch that he had made himself, hoping to reassure her that she isn’t to blame for what happened, and especially that he doesn’t see her at fault for his injuries. It didn’t stop her from leaving, but she keeps the brooch with her.

He has been dating another man his age, Andrew Ainsworth, for a short while now. Unlike Rupert, he isn’t an adventurer or a noble, being a cook in the city they both live in. He generally prefers keeping his head down however seeing his boyfriend’s excitement when he retells adventuring stories brings joy to his heart. Though, after recent events, he can’t help but feel some fears as he hears the murmurs of disapproval towards Rupert’s family as the public knows little about what happened other than the noble family suddenly starting to excuse themselves from public view.

Désirée Échemont. (She/Her)

A tiefling woman around Katherine’s age, Désirée is quiet tall and has purple ram horns. Her hair is shaved on one side and shoulder-length on the other, usually styled in such a way to compliment and work with her horns. She usually wears a tailcoat, one that is black and elegant. She lost one of her legs in the Dragon incident, and she now has a prosthetic leg modelled after a goat’s leg.

She is an assertive person, usually being ready to make plans or argue, whichever suits the situation more. Despite her sometimes abrasive personality, she is very calm with Katherine (and her friends in general) and knows good ways to calm her down. She knows when abrasiveness is needed and when she needs to be calm. That combined with her rogue training can make her a formidable opponent, though, she still has some time getting used to her prosthetic before adventuring is on the table again.

She regrets not managing to catch Katherine before she left as she did so quite suddenly. She understands her friend’s guilt and anxieties and just wishes she could’ve helped her. She hopes that once she feels comfortable leaving, she’ll be able to find her friend and give her the help she needs.

Jas’sino Valkalar. (He/Him)

A young adult high elf, Jas’sino was a cleric of Milil, a god of poetry and song. He had been adventuring with Katherine and Désirée before the Dragon incident led to his untimely death. He had blue skin and long hair that even when part of it was tied back, as it usually was, still dipped below his shoulders. He often wore loose purple clothing and multiple golden earrings, as well as his holy symbol of Milil.

He had often been loud, playing music, singing praises to Milil, or paying compliments to his adventuring companions. Whenever he could, he encouraged Katherine to play instruments more often, believing she should have confidence in her talent especially due to his belief (and Milil’s philosophy) that music should never be silence. He truly cared about his companions, staying loyal to them until the end.

Katherine still has festering guilt over his death, believing she could’ve stopped it if she had only made different choices. Since his passing, she had delved deep into performing as a way to remember him, as well as a way to cope with her guilt and anxieties. It became enough of a coping mechanism for her that her magic started linking to her music and performances, and Katherine became a glamour bard.

Misc.:

The Delaney Noble Family is well known for having made their fortune through adventuring. Due to this, one of their family traditions is to go adventuring once a child becomes an adult as a rite of passage. Katherine always felt quite anxious about the idea of doing so but decided against sharing her fears, believing she would disappoint her family if she didn’t follow tradition, especially as she already felt at times that she didn’t belong.

Katherine suffers from anxiety and an eating disorder. Very few people know about her troubles with eating due to it being so heavily linked with her anxieties.

Despite having her necklace, Katherine isn’t completely lost without it. She can read Braille, as well as find her way around her home, play some instruments, and do some dances without needing to see.

Before the Dragon incident (and Jas’sino’s death), Katherine was more of a general magic user without specialization. Since becoming a bard, she can no longer cast in the way she used to, now needing to use performance in order to cast.

Mercenary: At 35 seasons, Nyx has been a mercenary for quite a while... starting when he was just 19 seasons. His experience is rather varied and expansive, but most interesting is who he’s worked for in the past. Perhaps when offered the right information in return, he’d be willing to divulge more information.

Adaptive Armor: Nyx has recently begun a development on what he calls “adaptive armor”. So far he’s managed to create a weapon system that allows his gun to shift into not only a piece of armor, but other weapons as well. While not as strong as their original counterparts (yet), his designs allow for a great degree of mobility and versatility. Because of the nature of the weapons, he has a great deal of experience with Magitek armor and prosthetics, as well as creating weaponry for persons lacking the aether to power their own weapons of choice.

Tattoos: This Miqo’te is bone too shy about sharing his love of getting his body inked. Often going sleeveless with fitted tank tops, it would be easy to see them at basically any given time. If one is observant, they might recognize the importance of these tattoos and what their actual purpose is... and those geometric patterns might not just be for show... one could say they almost flicker with energy.

Garlean Influence: While usually reluctant to admit it on any level, there is something about Nyx’s behaviors and fighting style that are reminiscent of a certain Empire. With enough trust and prodding, it’s possible he might divulge these reasons to the right person.

Heavy Accent: If his mouth is open, this one is incredibly obvious. While many Miqo’te hailing from the desert have an accent of their own, Nyx’s own came from an amalgamation of voice heard while staying in Ul’dah. When angry or irritated, it grows thicker and sometimes unintelligible. (It’s Scottish. Think Gerard Butler!)

Season 8 Predictions and Speculation

Buckle in boys and girls, because this ended up being over 7000 words long (with no pictures, sorry, I’m tired), and consists of wild speculation of many different theories and storylines, and how I see them playing out. There’s a huge focus on Allura, Keith, Lance, Lotor, Acxa, and Honerva over anyone else, but with explanations as to why.

We have a combinations of theory, meta, and, well, most likely fanfiction ideas (also typos and me ignoring plot holes or things I can’t think of RIGHT NOW). I’m fine with that. This was fun to write. I really apologize to anyone if the link doesn’t work.

Also, yes. I am a klance shipper and that does colour things at one point, BUT I tried to leave it so where their relationship could largely still be seen as platonic too. Let’s do this!

I’ve said a few times that VLD, instead of being a straight-up adaptation of the 80s Voltron, is both adaptation and a sort-of prequel for it, as well as original twists and things thrown in. I think that this is a great way to make something new while still respecting the original material.

We’re seeing how Keith becomes the leader he was shown to be. We’re seeing how Lance becomes his best friend and right-hand man. We’re seeing how Allura became a Paladin. We’re seeing why their armour colours don’t match their lion colours (except for Hunk, since in the 80s he had orange armour, not yellow, and technically only Pidge matched).

In the 80s Voltron, the Galaxy Garrison was one of the main headquarters for the ‘Galaxy Alliance’. I think we’re seeing the Garrison building up to this, especially since aliens came to Earth and seem to be staying. Instead of the galaxy alliance though, we have the Voltron Coalition. It’s going to be like their headquarters.

The MFE fighters and Atlas, I think, are going to be like Vehicle Voltron, where they stay closer to Earth and defend things there while Voltron deals with farther away. (Edit: after writing this, I see that Fictional Crystals made a video saying something similar.) It should be noted that Atlas, in Greek mythology, holds the world on his shoulders.

So where does the story start in S8?

They’re working on cleaning up Earth, the coalition seems to be largely coming there as a home base. Things, all things considered, as probably very peaceful for the Paladins. Hell, they’re heroes there. They get Earth food. They get to be with their families. For most of them, they’re probably getting comfortable there again.

However, there is the fact that an Altean was found inside of the robot that tried to kill them. I don’t think she was just a power source. I think she was actively controlling it. I think she was still conscious when she activated the self-destruct in it.

That’s something that they should be very worried about. In fact, I think that this is going to be consuming Allura especially. Romelle, I think, will be used at first to identify who the Altean is and confirm that she was from the missing colony.

Sam mentions that they were looking for months though, so unless she was somehow in a stasis of sorts, the Altean should be dead. If she is, that’s going to leave a lot of wondering about what’s going on, and I think if she somehow is alive, they’re going to learn that Honerva sent her.

Fact: Romelle was the only Altean in the colony that knew what Lotor was up to. As far as anyone else knows, he just left and never once came back for them. The rest would still be loyal, nay, devout to him.

Theory: I think Honerva went to them and manipulated them. She’s presented herself as Lotor’s mother, and told them that Voltron killed Lotor. So now they’re loyal to her. In fact, Honerva may have told something similar to the Druids when she left, since the one Keith fought said that, “Haggar has forsaken us because of your treachery”, which, honestly, is an oddly specific thing to say and super strange.

Let’s focus on Allura first.

Taking a step back from that for a moment, I think at the beginning of the season, we’re going to see Allura and Lance already in a relationship. This is fine. This might even be healthy for both of them in the long run. However, I don’t think we’re going to see anything like a kiss or any super specific romantic stuff between them.

Time and time again, this show has gone with ‘telling’ instead of ‘showing’, which isn’t great for a story in general, let alone an animated show. It’s not a writing practice I agree with, but I get it. They have to cut things in order to fit everything in. I believe one of the writers said that if they could have used all of the cut material, they might have been able to fill up another 26 episodes. We’ll never get to see those.

Anyway, with that in mind, they have 13 episodes left to wrap up everything with these characters. In fact, I’d dare say that we’ve largely seen the wrap up of the individual stories for Pidge, Hunk, and Shiro (In fact, you’ll notice I focus a lot less on them, because their personal stories are mostly done). So we need to see the wrap-up for Allura, Lance, and Keith (as well as everyone as a Team).

The reason I don’t think they’re going to show us any real romance between Allura and Lance, and just tell us that they’re together, is partially because they have 13 episodes left, and partially because it’s not a show about romance. The only reason that the romance will be included in a small way is for specific character arcs that were always going to end that way.

It’s why, after some thought, I’m sure they’re not shoehorning random ships in. The writers aren’t perfect and make decisions that I don’t completely agree with, but they do know what they’re doing. If they couldn’t write, no one would have been interested in the first place.

I think we’re going to be seeing the end of Allura and Lance’s relationship, and like I mentioned before going off on 100 tangents, I think this is going to be healthy for them both in the long run. There won’t be any wondering if they made the right choices in the long run, or any huge ‘what ifs’.

What’s going to lead to this tension very early on is the Altean. Allura is going to want to go to Haggar. She’s going to want to help the Alteans, to show them that Honerva is wrong about them and is using them.

I’ve said before that Allura’s story is not one about romantic love. Yes, she experienced it along the way, but it wasn’t the point. Allura’s identity has largely been tied to being ‘Princess Allura, daughter of King Alfor of Altea’. Think about it. Allura chose Pidge to leave because she and her family were the ones most likely to be able to complete her father’s work. Lotor grew up her so quickly, because he kept comparing her to her father, and clearly held him in high regards, and his more studious nature probably reminded Allura a lot of Alfor.

Shipping Sidenote

I think even her attraction to Lance is based on this in a sense. She genuinely liked Lotor. That was not a lie, and she didn’t get any kind of proper closure on that. Lance though, he’s been compared to Alfor a lot, including by Allura herself. I think she’s leaning more towards Lance not only because he’s a good friend, but because she seems some of her father in him, and she misplacing her admiration due to the heartbreak and hurt she’s feeling. Lance is her friend. Lance likes her already (thanks mice). Lance is a good person of her father and she sees other qualities that are the same that she always admired. Lance is safe.

I don’t at all mean this is a creepy way. Allura does not love her father that way. What I’m saying is that in her hurting, she’s misinterpreting her feelings for Lance. It’s why they came out of nowhere. Allura, before Lotor, has never had to seriously deal with romantic love as far as we know. Meaning she’s just as much as disaster as everyone else in that regard.

In S6, the castleship was destroyed, and in S7, Allura was treated less as a Princess and more as just another Paladin. This is shown by the fact that she’s very rarely referred to as a Princess, and the fact that she was wearing the same uniforms as the Paladins at the Garrison. If that’s not enough for you, she gave up her tiara to help Shiro (something she’s been shown to have almost all her life). This is the most stripped of her titles that she’s ever been. The most herself and not just a Princess.

Allura’s endgame is going to be all about building her own identity outside of her father. Not just that, but it’s going to be about surpassing him. Going from ‘Allura, daughter of the Alfor’ to ‘Alfor, father of the Allura’.

As I said before, Allura is going to want to go after the Alteans, and this is what’s going to be part of the end of her relationship with Lance. Why? Well…

Let’s take a look at Lance next.

Themes surrounding Lance can be largely boiled down to two things: self-worth, and romantic love.

People complain a lot about ‘they’re not addressing Lance’ or ‘he’s being overlooked’. Well, in this case, they actually do ‘show’ us instead of ‘tell’ us. There’s really no rhyme or reason to things like that.

Lance’s confidence is arguably at its highest in S7 in regards to his place on the team, and his usefulness. We don’t see him wavering like we did when Kuron was Black’s pilot. Lance knows how he fits into the team. Of course, there are still a few more things in regards to that that need to be addressed.

I think those insecurities are largely going to involve Keith, which makes sense. We were introduced to Lance being compared to him pretty much out the gate. Keith has been both a huge source of motivation, inspiration, but also insecurities for Lance.

I think we’re going to see Acxa hanging around Keith a lot. I don’t think it’s going to actually be portrayed as romantic between them, but Lance is going to think it is, just like he questioned Allura and Keith’s relationship when they ran off together. It’s going to make him insecure despite his relationship with Allura, because she’s never been able to help him emotionally in quite the same way that he could help her.

Lance is going to become insecure again due to this, and he’s going to want to stay on Earth. I think that this is going to be the thing that finally leads him and Allura to separate from one another. I don’t mean ‘finally’ as in ‘thank god finally’, I mean as in they could both kind of see it coming. Allura never got her closure with Lotor. Lance has all those ‘what ifs’ involving Keith. She wants to go to space. He wants to stay on Earth.

I think we’ll see Hunk and Pidge wanting to stay on Earth with their families too.

Keith though, he’s going to agree with Allura. Though they have their differences, the two of them are a lot alike. They do things differently, but often times have the bigger picture in mind.

Of course Lance will be a bit hurt by Allura at the time, and vice versa, and I think he’ll lash out at Keith like he did in the past during moments of high stress. He’ll accuse Keith of wanting to run away again. Maybe Hunk tries to keep things calm like before, but this time, Keith is going to end up storming away from them.

It’s not like they’re in deep space. Nothing can happen this time, right?

Well, in space, they were tricked into thinking that a predator that wanted to eat them was the safety of Earth. This time around, the safety of a friend turns out to be not-so-safe.

Time to talk about Keith.

I genuinely think that Keith’s gay, and that he was coded that way on purpose. I do not think he has romantic feelings for Acxa, and I do not think she has romantic feelings for him either. Him going back to save her at the time makes sense, because Keith started as the person that would suggest leaving someone behind for the bigger picture (Allura in S1), then grow as a team player to the point where he’ll run back for others when he’s told not to (Regris in S4, to stop the bombs in S5), to someone who in theory understands the concept of leaving someone behind but only when that person is him (flying at the shield in S4, telling Krolia to leave him in S5, saying he understands why she left him for the mission in S6). Keith would have gone back anyone that was on their side as it was, let alone the person that keeps saving him or letting him go. (Sidenote: this should not be surprising, because look at Shiro. Shiro who would go back and fight for anyone else, but takes shit care of himself. You know, the dude that raised Keith in his teenage years? Yeah.)

I think that Acxa was looking for the Paladins, specifically Keith. Maybe it’s on a personal level where she thinks that he could be a good leader, sees a little bit of Lotor in him, and she wants to be his sort-of right hand in the way she was with Lotor. I don’t think so though. He already has a ‘right hand’ he trusts without hesitation (as shown time and time again in S7 alone).

I really don’t think this is where this is going though.

Keith has always been the ‘special snowflake’ of the bunch, but he’s written in a way that, unless you hate him anyway, it doesn’t make him a bad character. For every one thing that makes him ‘special’ he has a downside that balances it out.

It’s not even that he’s part-Galra that actually makes him ‘special’ though. There are plenty of part-Galra characters. It’s whatever he has going on with quintessence, which was shown in S1, then shoved aside for everything else, and brought back slightly in S6, and then in full-force in S7. That wasn’t a mistake. They’re taking his connection to quintessence somewhere.

Not just that. Thematically, it would have made more sense for Shiro to land the killing blow on Sendak. I thought that was where it was going to go. But instead they chose Keith to kill him on-screen in a way that is framed very similarly to Zarkon defeating Alfor.

Given that Keith’s the leader of Voltron, and that he killed Sendak, I think perhaps the blade is encouraging him to take up a leadership role with the Galra. Maybe others are too, and this is another factor about why he wants to go back to space.

Keith would not at all want to be an Emperor. I don’t think he’d want to be any kind of political leader. He can be more of a military one like with Voltron, in charge of a small team, but politics? Nah. He’s not going to want that, but he’s going to feel pressure from a lot of sides to do it.

After his fight with Lance, he goes to talk to Acxa, who he’s been close to lately. Maybe he decides to apologize to Lance, to tell him he’s not going to be this Galra leader, but as a team they need to go after Haggar.

Then Acxa is going to lure him into a trap.

I think that Acxa is still working with Honerva, but only as a means to an end. I think they have a common goal: they both want Lotor back.

Now time to talk more about Acxa and Honerva to show I’m not taking a female character and making her bad for the sake of a ship because, ew. Also, we’re going to talk a lot about Lotor too.

So yeah, the Lotor stuff first.

First and foremost, we’re not done with Lotor. One of the first things you should realize is, unless they’re actually shown as dead, assume they’re not dead. Sometimes they are (side-eyes Shiro), and sometimes they’re shown as dead and still come back, but you know what I mean.

The Paladins are assuming that Lotor could not survive in the rift. Keep in mind, both Allura and Keith wanted to go back and get him, to bring him back out, but then the other three said no, and Keith sided with the majority instead of fighting, so they left him.

Lotor is not a normal Galra. I don’t mean in the sense that he’s part Altean, or seemed to value intelligence over brute force. I’m talking about the fact that Honerva was pregnant with him when Lotor brought her into the void. Maybe part of the reason (not the whole reason), she became so obsessed with Quintessence and the rift was trying to find a way to save her sick unborn baby or something. Given that she had notes and stuff, Lotor would see that love towards him, and it would make him value her more.

Keep in mind, he hated Zarkon. He also knew who Haggar was all along, you can tell, he just separates them into two different people, because Haggar didn’t know who he was and was a witch and monster that probably worked against him time and time again, but Honerva was the mother that loved him and wanted to save him.

Lotor values loyalty almost above all else. That shit matters.

Anyway, Honerva was pregnant when she went into the rift, and those creatures took over both Zarkon and Honerva, twisting them into the corrupted form of Zarkon that lived for 10,000 years as a monster, and Haggar.

When Zarkon died, the black bayard changed back into the non-corrupted form, showing that, for that split second before he died, he was free of those monsters. He died as himself. Honerva went to Oriande, and I think that perhaps it expelled the creatures from her body, hence the shift even in the subtitles from the name Haggar to Honerva. Like Lotor, she too separates herself into two different people.

My point is though, these rift creatures took over two adult minds. What do you think they did to an unborn child that’s essentially a blank slate? When Lotor used the black bayard, it was in its corrupted form, and I think that they showed us that to show that something isn’t right with him on that level.

That’s why Oriande didn’t ‘cure’ him like it did Haggar. That corruption is the reason he’s alive, it’s a part of him in a way like non-other. Or, perhaps, Haggar knew how to handle the white lion, and if Lotor would have done that properly, the creatures would have left him. Who knows?

We do know that there was something wrong with Lotor at birth. Zarkon asks if he can be saved. We also see little Lotor with glowing eyes. Yet, he’s been alive for 10,000 years and looks like a young adult.

Yeah, he can survive the rift for a long period of time. In fact, he’s probably the only thing that physically can.

What does all this have to do with Acxa though?

She has been loyal to him through everything. He killed Narti, and that had Ezor and Zethrid wanting to run for the hills. Acxa seemed to agree, but we later find out that she was playing everyone right alongside Lotor. He had to go on his own with the Paladins, and she was the oen that suggested going to Zarkon. Who do you think gave her that idea?

I don’t think she knew that Haggar would seek them out after Zarkon was gone, but she rolled with it, keeping eyes and ears with the Galra while Lotor did his thing.

I cannot stress that again. Lotor killed Narti, and she was still loyal to him. Unwaveringly loyal and willing to shoot Honerva for his sake. Lotor knew this. He trusted Acxa above all others.

Then she saw him unhinging during the fight with Voltron. She says ‘separate ties with Lotor for good’, but then she tries to plead with him later and looks genuinely heartbroken over what’s happening.

I think she’s still loyal to Lotor, and she wants to help get him out of the rift, which is exactly what Honerva’s planning on doing.

We know from interviews that Honerva actually does feel love towards Lotor. It’s what motivated her from being all ‘yes Zarkon kill the bitch’ to ‘ohfuckno activate babysitter-Kuron, give him black bayard’ probably knowing that Zarkon wasn’t going to come out of it alive.

Instant switch when she remembered. We have no idea what she wanted to use Sendak for. No idea what her plan was for capturing Lotor.

Neither Haggar nor Honerva are necessarily leaders. She has almost cult-like control over the druids, and now probably the Alteans, but she’s not an overall leader.

Honerva and Acxa are working together to bring Lotor back, and then they’re going to make him Emperor of a proper Empire this time. At first, Honerva wanted to use Sendak to bring together the Empire, and then probably off him for Lotor to take over (and proving some kind of loyalty).

I think that’s still her plan. Put her child in power, and be able to run her experiments and do as she pleases since she’s his mother and helped him.

Okay but what does this have to do with Keith?

I’ve said this in other posts, but it’s almost like a double-whammy. They need to get control over the factions of the Galra Empire for her plans to work. We know it’s in shambles with warlords running amok, and Haggar needs a new puppet.

Who is someone many people are likely going to follow? Perhaps a half-Galra that happens to be the current Black Paladin? The Black Lion seems to be almost a symbol towards the Galra too. Lotor presented himself as bringing Black back to the Galra, and Black showed Shiro Daizabaal as her home.

Not only that though. Lotor probably had the greatest collective forces in the shambles of the Galra Empire, and Keith just fucking shanked him. Came flying down from the heavens and delivered a holy ass whoopin’, skewering him in half. On screen.

The coalition, in this theory, already wants him as the leader, so she’s going to sink her claws into him and control him. Keith isn’t at all going to do this willingly. Perhaps this leads to some answers about Narti and Kova, since Narti’s the only character that was shown to be able to control minds directly of people that she didn’t create, and it’s still suspicious that she had Haggar’s fucking 10,000 year old cat as her seeing-eye animal (also, Haggar looking through Narti’s eyes in S4? Not to be insensitive, but she literally didn’t have eyes, so how was Haggar watching them? Oh, right. Through the fucking cat.)

(Kova is secretly the one that controls minds, Narti was just a puppet.)

She doesn’t want to keep Keith around permanently though.

NOTE: this Galra Emperor stuff might mean nothing at all. In fact, you can take that part out of the theory all together and it can still work as long as you just focus on getting Lotor back.

Honerva had zero interest in Keith as of S6. She wanted Kuron to get rid of him. However, I think she was also watching that fight through his eyes. Keith, if he would have been fighting as offensively and aggressively as he used to, would have beaten Shiro. We saw this in the fight, because the times he did go on the offensive, he was close to overpowering him (“There’s the Keith I remember”).

The only things that might have caught her attention were Keith’s strength (he did win in the end), summoning the black bayard from Shiro (which, yes, I do think is what happened despite some others not thinking so), and when his eyes changed.

Shapeshifting is not something associated with Galra. Not at all. We’ve seen half-Galra with strange abilities (Narti with mind control, and Ezor with turning herself invisible that was never really used properly again), but that doesn’t explain Keith’s eyes changing. Galra have never been shown to do that. It would have been easy to show. It wasn’t though, because it’s not a Galra trait.

Also, Galra haven’t been shown to have a connection to Quintessence.

Humans certainly don’t shapeshift. Humans don’t seem to have a stronger than normal connection to Quintessence, otherwise we would have seen more of the other Paladins doing stuff with it like Keith was shown to do in S7.

Originally, with him, it seemed more like a slight ability that may have been slightly watered down from human or Galra genetics over time. A part of me thinks that Krolia herself isn’t all Galra. A parent or grandparent could have been Altean, the only species shown to be shapeshifters at this point. Krolia doesn’t look like any other Galra we’ve seen, outside of Lotor and Acxa.

That might not at all be the case though. Or maybe someone even farther in the past wasn’t entirely Galra but far enough back where Krolia doesn’t even know about it. Genetics sometimes keep things around like that, and they randomly pop up every once and a while. Hell, maybe it’s just because he was born and grew up in his young years so close to Blue.

Doesn’t really matter. What does matter is that he then got doused with a vat of raw quintessence.

Honerva said a small amount of it could power things for a long period of time. She used it to keep Kova alive for over 10,000 years. Not just Kova, but Zarkon, herself, potentially Zarkon’s closest generals (Sendak seemed to imply that he was around when Altea fell), and then there’s Lotor, or course. Keith took a fucking shower in it.

It’s not like she has any way of knowing that, right? It’s not like someone loyal to her would have pointed it out, ri—

Oh.

Honerva went looking for answers, and the druid brought up what happened. I don’t think she knew about that beforehand though, because, again, she never seemed interested in Keith before.

Through all her observations, she knows Keith probably is a walking quintessence hotspot. It was Lotor’s idea to take the quintessence from the Alteans themselves, and she said that she was impressed with it. She definitely took it further, making a robot that can be powered by a single Altean that’s strong enough to technically defeat Voltron by sapping away it’s quintessence, and also doing a lot of other weird shit while fighting Atlas.

Honerva wants Keith for his Quintessence, most likely to open the rift to get Lotor back. This is exactly why Acxa’s working with her, because though she has a connection to Keith, Lotor means so much more to her.

Acxa was looking for Voltron, and Keith specifically. We literally have no idea where she went after she separated from Voltron, but she definitely didn’t tell the coalition that they were back. So where did she go?

I think she went back to Haggar and told them that Voltron was heading to Earth. That was how Haggar knew to watch Earth. She waited until Keith killed Sendak to make her move. She was absolutely keeping track of this somehow. Maybe she was already paying attention to Earth, but given everything else she seems to have been doing, she was probably tipped off about where they were going.

Also, I find it suspicious that Haggar was the one that gave the orders to target the Blade of Marmora, and then later all the Voltron Coalition.

Maybe other groups were hunting the Coalition down, but we know that Haggar gave the druids the job of hunting the Blade. The Blade, that also wasn’t on her radar until she was watching Keith through Kuron’s eyes, saw him dressed in that uniform, and introduced his Galra mother to Kuron as a part of the Blade of Marmora.

Yes, they were more out of the shadows since teaming up with Voltron, so she probably heard about them before, but that was the first time she’d shown true interest in the entire group specifically. I think she was trying to find Keith too.

That druid singled out Keith. Yes, Kosmo was the one that teleported Keith away, but still, the druid (who I know has a name but I’m lazy). Krolia was a higher ranking Blade with more experience. She’s arguably more dangerous than Keith. Then there was Allura, who is a walking power house. But he went for Keith.

This all leads up to…

Acxa gets close to Keith to trick him, and brings him to Haggar. Perhaps to use as a puppet for a while, but definitely to use to bring Lotor back (in this theory). Except, maybe she didn’t tell Acxa that Keith would most likely die doing this.

Loyal to Lotor or not, Acxa has a connection to Keith. She still wants Lotor back, but she doesn’t want him to die in the process.

So she’s going to go back to Voltron somehow to get their help. She’s a morally grey character, and that’s fine. It doesn’t make her demonic or anything like that. She’s allowed to make mistakes and be played herself.

Meanwhile on Earth…

The other Paladins do notice that Keith is gone. However, they think he left with the other Galra. Lance is probably going to be shown as the angriest about this, but also acting like he doesn’t care.

Then Keith’s mother and Kolivan show up and they’re all confused. Then Acxa shows up and tells them what’s up.

Side point

I don’t think that Atlas is made to replace the castleship, though there’s definitely the parallels of Shiro taking Allura’s place in that respect with it. I think that Atlas will be staying close to Earth to protect it and act as the new Vehicle Voltron.

I think that they’re going to work on creating a second castleship that Voltron can use to get around. Maybe it won’t be a castle, but another ship at least so the lions can recharge. It’s why they brought the whole fucking Balmera at the end of S7. So Shay could come back, and so they can get a crystal to power it. Maybe the Alteans end up living there as the explorers and peacekeepers they always were in the end. (With Romelle flying it in Allura’s old position).

This is what prompts all of the Paladins into going after Keith. Perhaps Haggar tries to keep them busy on Earth by sending other Altean-robots to fight them. That’s where Atlas comes in. Atlas and the MFE fighters are going to protect Earth, keep it safe so that the Paladins don’t have to worry. I’m not entirely sure if Shiro’s going to go with them or not.

If there’s a replacement castleship by this point, I don’t think it’s done, so they have to take the lions.

They realize that they’re going to need Voltron for this. They can’t leave Black behind. So once again, they need a temporary Paladin.

At this point, they’re not going to do a permanent lion switch again.

Just like Keith didn’t want to go into Black, Lance isn’t going to want to either, because he’s going to be blaming himself. It’s what Lance does. I think this is where he’s going to have a one-on-one talk with Shiro about everything. Shiro’s going to be the one to urge him to try, to go save Keith. I could see him encouraging Lance to go after Keith, to not give up, because he’s still there (unlike Adam).

I think that Lance will be the one that Black accepts, because he’ll be the one that wants to get Keith back the most out of all the current Paladins.

As for who temporarily flies Red? There are two options and I’m open for either of them. One is Coran finally getting the chance he’s wanted since before. The other is Romelle, explaining why she was shown in with Lance in Red several times during S7. She’s familiar with Red.

I’m leaning a little more towards Romelle, because of how they need to get to Keith. Allura can create wormholes again, and we know that Coran knows how to open them as well as long as Allura powers the teleduv beforehand. Plus, Coran helps pilot Atlas, so he’d be more useful on Earth, and Romelle going with them helps too.

No matter if Keith is being used as a pawn, or just basically a sacrifice, Honerva is going to use him to fight the others. Maybe he’ll be in a weakened state that she can take over (OR THE CAT CAN CONTROL…yeah I’m done with that) while also opening the rift to get Lotor back. Kind of like the last bit of energy he has left.

Allura is going to face Honerva, Altean vs. Altean. Since she’s there in this theory, Romelle tries to get through to the Alteans, because she’s a familiar face. They know her. She’d pump up Allura and rip both Lotor and Honerva down.

I haven’t focused much on Hunk or Pidge, and it’s not because they’re not important. Like I said before, their personal arcs are pretty much over as of S7. Here, they’re going to function in much more a team aspect. Planning together, being the ones to break in and fight sentries and stuff like that.

Lance is going to be the one to face Keith alone. I’ve gone through this theory before, even used it in a writing prompt. It’ll be the last Black Paladin vs. Red Paladin fight. Corrupted Zarkon vs. Alfor. Clone Shiro vs. Keith. Mind controlled Keith vs. Lance.

This is a secondary reason Lance has been compared to Alfor before. Why he was given the sword. It’s not a fair fight gun to sword, and not interesting visually. Lance could snipe Keith without much trouble.

Sword fights though are close up and much more intimate. We saw this in the Shiro vs. Keith fight, which was probably the BEST and most intense fight of the series to me.

There’s a reason why it’s important that Lance and Keith left off on seemingly bad terms. Keith’s been putting walls up again when it comes to Lance, having been rejected and having had time to dwell on that.

Haggar is going to use this to help control Keith, to get in his head. In this theory, Keith has had feelings for Lance for a long time, but Lance was with Allura. Haggar’s going to use that too. Hell, she’s going to use the fact that everyone seems to be using him for their own agendas when he doesn’t want to be a Galra leader. It’s a strong way to break through his stubborn defenses (plus she’d be sapping the quintessence from him).

Normally in a sword fight, Keith would destroy Lance. That’s the truth. No matter how much Lance has been practicing, Keith has been doing it for years and it’s his specialty (along with hand-to-hand).

Keith being weaker, and maybe a part of him still fighting back against the control, will allow Lance to put up a bit more of a fight, but ultimately, it’s going to be his words that get through to Keith.

It’s like how we saw Kuron react to Keith saying he loves him, except this time, Keith’s going to react strongly enough to either break through the control, or give Lance the chance to knock him out. Alternatively, it’ll give Lance the chance to quickly change bayards and maybe shoot something close by that’s controlling him (if there’s someone like Narti around).

(IF IT’S THE CAT KOSMO TAKES IT OUT. HENCE WHY HE WAS INTRODUCED. OKAY THIS TIME I’M DONE WITH THE STUPID CAT THAT PROBABLy MEANS NOTHING BUT LET ME LIVE)

There’s not going to be a romantic, love confession here. Maybe friendship and love. Definitely more personal stuff.

Then we get Lance getting Keith out of there, and ideally, we get a flashback of the actual bonding moment, because it’s being mirrored here.

Meanwhile, Allura ends up defeating Honerva, but she says something like she’s too late, and the rift opens again. Romelle’s words and Allura’s actions prompted many of the Alteans to agree to go with them, so they’re all bailing out.

The creatures are coming back out, but in a few form, because the Lotor that went in is not going to be the Lotor that comes out.

The Sincline ships didn’t quite function like the lions. They were ships that could combine together, but showed no sentience of their own. That’s going to change now, because the rift creatures (which were shown as being quadrupeds like the lions) gave them sentience.

Maybe Lotor lets Honerva and Acxa pilot two of the ships now, maybe he doesn’t need to. Maybe he looks the same, maybe he’s completely different, I’m not entirely sure.

If Lotor doesn’t let Honerva help him, I think he’s going to be the one to kill her, just like he killed Zarkon. As for Acxa, either she helps Lotor and goes back to him, she was back on Earth the entire time, or she goes back with them. I don’t want her to die, though that’d definitely make it super obvious that this Lotor isn’t right.

The Lotor that went into the rift was misguided, had a bad moral compass, but he wasn’t pure evil. This Lotor though is exactly the monster that Allura claimed he was.

The Paladins are going to retreat. Probably back to Earth.

What now?

There are many ways this can go. If it’s a mid-season kind of thing (which is…a lot but this show has been going full-tilt for a while now), there’s time to plan, to show the destruction the rift creatures can cause, to perhaps come up with an idea to save Lotor like neither of his parents could be saved.

Allura needs to have closure with Lotor in some form. She needs that.

Like Romelle was a Princess in the original, I could see her becoming something of a Leader with the surviving Alteans. The one to guide them into this new world with both Coran and Allura helping. This leaves Allura open to continue being the Blue Paladin.

Allura, however, will focus on alchemy. Somehow, she’ll figure out a way to make the lions stronger, to give them an upgrade.

Both Allura and Lotor were following in the footsteps of a parent. For Lotor, it was Honerva. For Allura, it was Alfor. Lotor did improve on Honerva’s work and took it to places she couldn’t imagine (but then later used herself). Allura is going to surpass her father too by somehow improving the lions, making them stronger.

Allura’s future is going to involve a combination of being an alchemist, helping the Alteans, and being a Paladin of Voltron, and kicking ass at all of them as the strong, confident woman she truly is. Alteans definitely age differently than humans, so in the distant future, I could see her eventually being the Black Paladin. But we won’t see that in the show.

There were some toys released a while ago with the lions looking different, perhaps that was done for a reason. Toys sometimes do spoil things amongst many franchises.

They all know Lotor’s going to come for them, so they’re getting ready for it. I don’t think the final fight will be by Earth though, they’ve already done that. The battle with Lotor technically took place by the ruins of Daizabaal were if I remember correctly (that’s where the rift originally was). Where would be a significant place though that we haven’t seen at all?

Who were the ‘bad guys’ during the first part of this season?

The fight with Lotor will be by the ruins of Altea, which we have yet to actually see. Allura said Altea and the entire star system was destroyed. Sendak said that Altea was the only world to fight back against the Galra, the only one to be completely destroyed.

We saw Daizabaal. We saw Earth. We have yet to actually see Altea, or what’s left of it. If there’s something left of Zarkon’s home that was destroyed first, there’s something left of that too.

Maybe Lotor offers them a challenge. It wouldn’t be the first time he’s done something like that. It’d give him the upper hand luring them in. Maybe they go there first, knowing that there won’t be anyone else there that can get hurt in the process.

Of course, it depends on when this type of things happens and who’s on his side. There’s a lot that can happen in half a season. Either that, or this is going to be towards the very end and we’ll have a couple episodes with a single intense and emotionally draining battle in it.

Before they go, we’re going to see a lot of intensely emotional moments between characters and families. We’ll see Allura and Lance reconciling and agreeing to be friends. We’ll see Lance with his family. We’ll see Hunk with his. Pidge with hers. We’ll see Allura with Coran and Romelle, as well as the other Alteans.

Three important ones will happen though.

We’ll see Krolia with Keith. All of this happening doesn’t change the fact that the Galra need some kind of leader to get their shit together (even if it’s not an Empire). Everyone else will finally listen to Keith when he says he doesn’t want that. In fact, going off of him killing Sendak is just keeping those old ways alive. Instead, we’ll see Krolia as the leader (no, not Kolivan, Krolia). Maybe she needs to be an Empress for a bit before changing things. (Keith would be a pretty princess in this case, wouldn’t he, AJ?)

We’ll see Shiro with everyone else too. Some hugely emotional moments where they’re all talking about how far they’ve come.

We’ll see a moment between Lance and Keith too, where they get their shit together and are honest with one another. Keith is going to ask if Lance wants to fly Black, insisting he could go to Red (Romelle does NOT want a second time of that), but Lance is going to say no, because he’s confident in himself now. He knows where he belongs and that he’s good enough.

IF there’s any direct romantic implications, which I think there will be, this is where it’s going to be MOST obvious. We’ll see a hug no matter what, but if they want to do it, this is the right place to frame a kiss too where the judgemental assholes can still say ‘no they’re just HUGGING’ even though they’re definitely not.

Honestly, I’m not sure how whatever big final fight they have is going to pan out. I THINK it’s going to be with the rift creatures/Lotor, but there’s always the slightest chance it’ll involve Honerva as well, all things depending.

Of course they win in the end. Maybe people get scarred and injured, but no one is going to die from the main group.

Over 7000 words and I’m not even sure if they save Lotor to help him, or just defeat him. I’d like to think they help him this time around though. Or at least try to.

What I do know is that a show called Voltron is going to end with an epic battle involving Voltron.

I also think that, at the end, everyone will have lives on Earth/with Alteans/other aliens, but our current team of Paladins will also be shown to be going back into space in the end. They’ll be excited, ready to go as a team, and they’ll go together and by their own choice. The Galra Empire did do a lot of damage, after all, and there are plenty of worlds that need help anyway.

And that is how the show will end.

Things I did not address: What’s going on with the MFE fighters? I genuinely don’t know. Their inclusion threw me off. It really felt like they were setting up a spin-off series with them, and S7 was used to introduce them. They’re defending Earth while Voltron is off in space I guess?

I didn’t really address Hunk and Pidge, because like I said, their personal story arcs are either finished or almost there. We even saw Hunk reuniting with Shay, which is something that tends to happen at the end of a story arc, especially since she, more than anything else, was what really started his growth as a person.

Pidge, as well, was shown surrounded by her family. Her mom was there. Her dad was there. Matt was there. Matt has a masked girlfriend. Hell, Beezer was there along with Nyma (though Rolo was suspiciously absent…which I don’t know what to make of that at all). The goals she set out to accomplish have been accomplished. She now has friends, is part of a team, is less selfish. Again, what prompted her to grow and change has largely been accomplished and shown.

Shiro is another character who has found his place and where he belongs now. He’s not a Paladin anymore, but that’s okay. Shiro has had the amazingly unique story of being both The Mentor and being an active character in his own right. That’s incredibly rare in stories, since the mentors are normally shrugged aside or killed (which…yeah…was supposed to happen). He’s found a place as a bridge between the Garrison and Voltron more than anyone else.

I didn’t talk about the rebels or coalition really, or the rest of the blade, or even Krolia for that matter, cause I’m not entirely sure where that fits in with this. That can be worked out later.

SO, this is some wild speculation mixed with meta, mixed with theories, mixed with fanfiction ideas. I just pretty much planned out an entire story here that I do not want to write myself.

Actually, I do have a lotta crap like that runnin’ around in my head regarding Peter and his situation.I think about this a lot and I include most in my fics (when it comes up)

My first and my favorite (but flawed) head-canon was that after the bite, Peter’s blood turned blue-violet ! Spiders have blue blood due to their hemocyanin containing copper rather than iron. In this case, Peter would have to take Iron supplements every morning, due to receiving anemia from the lack of hemoglobin. (Along with a regular spider’s blood cells that are just for healing wounds, he still has some red cells so oxygen circulates throughout his body; capillaries are scrapped, not going into that) It’s a super flaky hc, and there are some big holes, but it’s fun :3

Another, more ‘raunchy’, head-canon I have is that Peter ejaculates a lot. Spiders can control the flow of their semen and some spiders can control the amount (for reproduction purposes) and since Peter is a teenager, I always had the thought that he could never control either,,

Peter can communicate with and befriend spiders, sorry, I don’t make the rules

Peter gets cold really easily and dreads each winter.

Peter molts and it’s extremely painful for him. Since he doesn’t have an exoskeleton, it isn’t mandatory for growing, but it’s crucial for him to molt when he gets seriously injured. He’s also able to regrow limbs if he molts, however, the process takes anywhere from one to several hours and he most likely won’t eat for a week or two before the process (and a day or two after)… is losing a few fingers really that bad ?

Peter is nearsighted, but can see in the dark so that’s cool. He also has the ability to see most actions in slow-motion and it boosts Peter’s accuracy regarding his punches, web fluid, and other methods for attack.

Peter can see more colors than other humans can and has difficulty explaining them to other people.

Peter’s saliva carries a toxin that can make anyone horny if it’s injected into their bloodstream (EG a bite :3)

Peter hates the smell/taste of lemon, peppermint, and vinegar (diatomaceous earth and other spider pesticides also makes Peter antsy, but they only come up when his Aunt May sees a spider and wants to get rid of it; rip local friendly neighborhood spider-hybrid,,)

Peter has lil’ blunt fangs,, (artists, jot that down)

A spider’s silk is stronger than steel and Peter is the only one in the world who has perfected the recreation of it. He uses it as a bulletproof covering (spider’s silk is soft, thin, light, and is the toughest material in the world, so it’s easy to incorporate it into his future suits)

Peter is extremely self-conscious about anything he does creatively (writing, drawing, home assignments, photography, etc); he can’t take constructive criticism well and Pete blames it on the fact that spider’s are always perfecting their webs, silk streams, and sex endeavors so that they can die without worry.

Peter’s suit usually helps him out with advanced senses, but alone (and partially unbeknownst to him), Peter has the ability to eavesdrop from a half a mile away, and is able to hear crystal clear enunciation and close-ranged projection from wherever he’s standing. You’d think that’d be annoying, but Peter tunes out a lot of the stuff he hears daily, anyways.

That’s all I have for right now :3 Most of these are facts I’ve learned from handling Goblin and other pet spiders I’ve had in the past ! I think most of them are unique and makes Peter all the more fun to play with (HC and fanfic wise)
