I am curious for your perspective on the way the OF creators are interacting with fans and have even admitted to editing the show based on fan reactions. It strikes me as an unusual level of interaction and capitulation, though of course TV is a live medium that is nearly always responsive to reactions to some extent. My preference is for a lot less of this kind of thing, but I know you have experience with direct interaction with media creators and have found it enhances your experience sometimes. What do you make of how these dynamics are showing up in OF and the effect it’s having on the show?

TV and Critic Background

So, I am actually the worst person to talk to if you think the creators should be quiet about their work, because I really enjoy talking to directors, producers, actors, cinematographers, and especially editors about their work. I often go to film festivals just to talk to the creators about their processes.

I've also been in the TV space a really long time, and I am used to this kind of behavior. I don't think a lot of folks who are in BL are used to being in the process of TV itself, and I think a lot of people have let the Netflix binge model inform the way they view TV. TV is not like movies. When you get a movie, you are seeing the end product of filming, editing, test screenings, re-edits, etc. TV is usually only an episode or two ahead of the viewers.

It's extremely normal for a show to respond to feedback when characters test well. The 100 did this with Jasper. He was supposed to die in the pilot when that spear entered his chest, but he tested well with audiences so they revived him.

Fun Fact: This is why Kiseki: Dear to Me didn't just move their release schedule up when episode 8 was leaked early. They probably weren't finished assembling episode 9.

I followed Sense8 through its entire development process all the way from rumors and then J. Michael Stracynski's posts about it, to the things Lana and Lily said about it, to the commentary from the cast.

I have a special hatred for Rick Behrman over Star Trek.

I absolutely hate Russel T. Davies because of Cucumber.

I bailed on Supernatural because of the way the writers condescended to us at comicon after killing Kevin.

I know some fans are upset about the idea that scenes they wanted to see got cut, but I was there for Noah Galvin opening his fucking mouth to talk shit about other actors at ABC who were playing beloved gay characters and that subsequently getting The Real O'Neals canceled. The show had a very short second season and I feel forever salty about that.

What does this mean for Jojo and Ninew and Den?

I actually think Jojo, Den, and Ninew are fine. I don't think they usually poopoo on valid reads from what I've seen, and mostly they're having fun with the fans, too. I just don't think people are used to the creators being so honest about how feedback affects the editing process.

I think this is the first time we've had a big show in a while where the creator was fairly active on socials about the show. Aof and Au are usually pretty quiet when their shows are airing, and only give small tidbits while they show is airing. Jojo is silly and likes to play with fans. Den is feisty and has a gay agenda to pursue.

Truly, I don't think Jojo and friends are that bad about anything with this show, because they're mostly just laughing and stating things that are obvious to people who pay attention to how the sausage is made.

Shipping

That being said, the biggest struggle OF is having is shipping. The FK girlies are so loud and their heavy breathing has likely influenced the way Jojo and friends decided to write Ray. The FB girlies are so into them that it's made Jojo and them dial back some of their Top content because the audience hates him so much. Only Boston and Nick feel like they've made it through the shipping gamut intact because Neo and Mark aren't bringing a bunch of preexisting shippers to the table.

Coming off of episode 10, you can see this plainly with the nasty4nasty dynamic with Boston and Nick. The emotional core of their dynamic feels true, even down to the way their moments in the store mirror their first interactions again. Boston came in for service about his phone and intentionally showed Nick something on it.

I don't think Jojo has ever had to work with multiple acting pairs that were big branded pairs prior to this, and this is only his second time really dealing with that. With Never Let Me Go, Pond and Phuwin weren't that big yet, and he wasn't threatening their ship with anything complicated. OF is challenging for people who just watch BL as fap material and have to deal with their faves not being easy people to parse.

Volume 6 Thoughts

Geri is about to catch some hands. Girl cannot take no for an answer and is beyond delusional when it comes to Joyo. Telling her off felt good.

Why does Joyo's little pouty face get me every time? It's so sad and cute at the same time.

No Travis, I don't want you, I don't know how many times I have to say it.

I'm sorry, but why do none of the couples change anymore? There was so much drama last week and still nothing changed.

The sleepwear options are cute, especially the teddy. My MC is fully embracing her Barbie era with all the pink outfits this season.

I've seen quite a few other people say it, but why the hell do we need to sneak out to the daybeds? I want Travis and Geri to know we don't want to sleep next to them.

Joyo mentioned in casa that he loves dirty talk and girls whispering in his ear. Idk if the other boys said that or not in this volume but it is a Joyo specific thing in my head now.

All the boys smell like cedarwood apparently and I reject it. Joyo's a scuba diver from a beach town for Christ's sake, he should smell like the sea and maybe something like bergamot. Not cedarwood (that should be Alex specific and I'll die on that hill).

Bits scene itself was short ànd kinda lackluster.... I don't have time to rewrite it, but it's tempting.

Okay, again, idk what the morning chat looks like for everyone but I was kicking my feet and squealing like a little girl. It was established in casa that Joyo hates camping and sleeping outside, but he goes on this little rant about how much he enjoyed sleeping under the stars with us and how we're the only person he'd do that for. Okay, on a non Raf route, Daph is adorable. I love her and Raf together.

Movie night titles were way better this season. I particularly liked 'Jumping for Joyo', 'Geri Much In Love', and 'Daph-Need Your Love'.

But the movie night drama was not it. Wow, a bombshell came in and flirted with me, call the press! Thank God Evan said something. The rest of the clips felt contrived or like they were just there to make Geri look bad (can't Joyo just pick me cause he likes me more and not cause Geri's a hot mess hypocrite?)

Can we also just appreciate that when I say my head isn't turning, everyone knows it's still on Joyo. We've been asking for this since casa s2 and it's finally, consistently remembering who I said I want to be with no matter how many people are interested in me.

Date with Evan was fine. Love that he seems to respect the word no. His sprite is fine AF, but I really just want him to be my villa bestie.

Love how soft and melty Joyo is one on one now, it's precious.

since i'm one of those people who watched tsn in 2023 (i was 12 when tsn was broadcasted) so it gave me this weird mixed feeling whenever i read markwardo fanfic because knowing how bad these people actually are irl and not some uwu precious baby but i can't blame fanfic writers in 2010-2011 for thinking zuckerberg and saverin were cool because during that time facebook was indeed cool and the internet was younger at that time too, the fic are good i admit but sometimes i need a moment to rethink why am i reading irl capitalists fanfic, it's so hard to distinguish between tsn and irl material most of the time too and not to mention tsn was just a story written based on irl saverin pov of fb and he was also an asshole. The only fun time to enjoy tsn was probably 2010-2011 because fb was cool, the cast was close and now even the cast of this film probably don't even contact each other anymore despite being so closed in 2010, sorry for rambling i just think it's amazing that people who enjoy tsn in 2010 still post about it in 2024!

Look I love context and you said you were 12 in 2010 so here is some context: yes the internet was younger and yes fb/meta had not destroyed democracy yet but I also think there was more of a sense of hope related to technology, as opposed to dread. A lot of tech and social mainstays had not happened yet, politics were drastically different, Chris Hughes (cofounder of fb & communications guy) helped Obama get elected, people didn’t think global warming was real, society was MUCH more conservative and homophobic, etc., and the internet was the place to be.

when you say the internet was younger I’m interpreting this to mean that FB had not come into its final form yet, which is true, but also it & the internet was such a radically different experience. It felt limitless. You weren’t corralled in as much. You could go anywhere, you could find anything, you could make your own websites very easily, you were not assaulted by pop ups and apps were not mainstream because Apple didn’t launch the App Store until 2008. It was so easy to learn how to code. The operating systems between Apple and Android were SO distinct. Twitter launched in 2008/2009 but wasn’t quite so relevant until idk 2014? Fandom had just migrated from LJ to Tumblr but Tumblr was also hotter with the aesthetic girlies and porn blogs. “The algorithm” didn’t run the world. Yesterday I tried to find an article by searching for it and both Google and DuckDuckGo completely disregarded my request and did not turn up anything relevant. I can assure you that would not have happened in 2011. So there was SUCH a sense of optimism because the internet felt like a social good instead of an obligation that is increasingly privatized, surveilled, constrained, and decayed.

Which is why TSN got made and why there was an interest. It was a source of profound social change. But anyway. FB/Meta has ruined lives and it and all other social media apps that elevate divisive opinions to prompt as much engagement as possible (have you heard of the awful Isabel Fall twitter scandal? I recommend this article) are awful! And yet there’s an expectation of being online because a lot of communities now organize online, a lot of services require being online, etc., fandom has become less centralized/less unified, which is its own post.

Out of curiosity, what led you to watch the film? I do find it fascinating that there’s been a resurgence of TSN fandom. If this article had not been written I would not be posting about it but there’s still a lot of fic being written and fanvids being made to Taylor Swift songs. But it’s fandom devoid of all this context. So it is very strange, because you know what FB and all these people in it will become. I think I would have the exact cognitive dissonance you described if I watched it for the first time last year and tried to read fic. It is SO deeply fictionalized, so much of it is radically untrue, but you as the reader carry the truth in your mind. Which is why I cannot and do not engage with these days. And why I hold TSN in my mind curtained off. I spoke with many ppl from the original fandom yesterday and trust me, no one wants this.

I think, realistically, whatever movie Sorkin wants to make will probably be very good. It’s probably a good story to tell & explore. But I won’t be watching it. I lived that shit

ok so I just went back and replayed and just noticed that Lewie was holding hands with Ivy when they came back from their date and then dropped them as soon as mc saw. now I know this is probably just bad writing from fb to try and make it seem "suspenseful" but all these little things are starting to add up. first you continue to go have private chats with Ivy even though you know her motive, then the hand holding thing, and now apparently you can't tell the difference between mc and her twin. ohh and also the "it's noted" thing during the challenge. Judging from the fb movies, the new hp series is gonna be trash. The old movies had jk as just a consultant and they worked fine, but when given full control over the writing and directing, the fb movies were full of a lot of questionable and bad decisions, such as having Queenie join the bad guys or making Voldemort’s snake into a human woman. After the lovely Katherine Waterson dared to criticize the transphobic comments of jk, she ended up with a glorified cameo in the third film, which is especially ridiculous considering she played the main character’s love interest and had larger roles in the first 2 films. That’s setting up a pretty toxic environment for child actors to work in because it’s unlikely these kids are going to agree with her as they get older and start to form their own opinions. In addition, there’s the stupid idea that the original child actors somehow owe jk. If anything, she owes them. If the movies weren’t as successful as they were, there’d be no theme park money, no video game money, and not as many kids reading the books today.

This is one reason why I worry about the kid actors in this reboot. Next to the fact that they'll have to deal with getting hate from various people who don't ever seem to learn to stop going after kid actors in movies or shows or from butthurt Harry Potter stans (I get being mad your favorite movie's are being rebooted, but dear god leave the kids out of it), they also have terf queen's easily hurt ego to deal with.

I am being serious when I say this: it wouldn't surprise me if it's in their contracts they cannot comment on JK Rowling or her tweets unless they wanna risk their careers, given how Hollywood can treat adult actors if the adult's do something the people heading the film/show don't like, let alone kid actors. Like generally wouldn't be surprising if JK demands a recast mid-show cause one of the golden trio actors disagreed with JK.

And don't get me started on that, "They owe JK their careers, they should be quiet out of respect to her!" bullshit. They owe her NOTHING as they would have been fine without the Harry Potter films. If anything, its like you said, she owes them.

I think it's easier to interpret book Aemond as an "outsider" or "loner" because he is written as a shallow caricature of a character whose only notable act is abandoning his family and the war they're fighting to hang out with his new girlfriend and commit genocide with zero strategic military aim - thus his actions can be viewed as those of someone who doesn't really give a shit about the promises he's made and the duties he has to his family and to the military effort (including his betrothed! he openly risks a crucial military alliance!). So I could see the argument that he maybe felt disconnected from them in some way, and there was never much love there. However, one of the clearest changes from book Aemond to show Aemond is how much more entrenched he is within his family. I do agree it seems that Ewan dials into this bad boy cliche in that interview, that I don't think is reflected in the material we get of Aemond on screen. If anything - we see over and over that Aemond is by far the most outwardly loved by Alicent out of the three kids (I'm not saying this motherly love or her attachment to him is particularly "healthy" - but she clearly loves him in the best way she's able to.) She struggles to connect with or express her love for Helaena and Aegon, yet we see her comforting Aemond when he's younger, fighting for him when he gets hurt, then her trust and reliance on him when he's older, her worry (she tells him she doesn't want him to go look for Aegon so he can stay with her!), her disappointment when he lets her down at dinner. I think Aemond's relationship with his family slowly disintegrating largely due to B&C fallout is going to be a crucial part of season 2 and his "unraveling," which is why it's even more significant that he WAS loved and trusted by his mother, by his pseudo father figure, perhaps even in ways by his brother and sister. I guess I also just don't personally see the appeal in the edgy loner who doesn't care about anything or anyone stereotype, and find it to be a set up for pretty bland one-dimensional storytelling. Lucky for us that isn't the story for him set up in season 1, and we will likely be seeing an explosive and toxic breakdown of the most important relationships in his life. I do tend to assume that people who put too much stock in the oft contradictory things actors say about their characters are new to fandom, because anyone who has been around the block even once knows to treat that kind of a stuff as a fun extra add-on, and rather focus on interpreting the information presented to us in its final form on our screens. Same with Olivia saying that Alicent is scared of Criston - that is simply not the story that is presented by season 1 of the show.

agree, but i also don't think we should get stuck in a couple of interviews. ewan's aemond doesn't really have any scenes with alicent at all in ep. 8 and very brief ones in ep. 9. it's possible he also didn't have access to the scripts for episodes 5-6, so alicent advocating for little aemond wouldn't be at the forefront of his mind. all these elements matter a lot when framing a character. the actors are not asoiaf nerds, they (hopefully) have better things to do with their time other than pouring over the sacred texts. and, in aemond's case, yes, he is an unhinged little maniac in FB so it's easy to paint him as a bad boy

at this point. you know. the show has contradictions, the book has contradiction (aemond's dilly-dallying in the riverlands bc he narratively needs to be there for his big death-off with daemon), the actor's interviews have contradictions. it is what it is. we'll always have fanfic

Goddamn, i knew KT had taken heavy inspiration from 3H discourse when writing Nopes, but i never expected them to be so on-the-nose about it; that entire conversation is just Claude parroting every single “Church bad” argument the fandom has come up with word-for-word, even the ones that were debunked just by paying miniscule amounts of attention to Three Houses' worldbuilding, such as the Church forbidding regions to be in contact with each other despite Faerghus explicitly having a good trading relation with Albinea.

Discourse became, hm, heated, because unlike the characters in this game, some fans are able to dispute those takes with, as you said, minuscule details here'n'there demonstrating how Claude himself was wrong - and not only because he notices people exist, but because the world contradicts his facts.

(I remember during the lockdown I made a rather large and detailed post about the GM recipes, and then made another about the so-called isolationism being pegasi blessing, since a lot of recipes involve ingredients that don't grow in Fodlan, or are native to other countries, like tomatos, Albinea fruits/moose/herring, and what not. It's not a lot, per se, but it demonstrated that Fodlan did trade with the rest of the world!)

But given how KT wanted to get a possible "happy ending" with the three lords, things cannot be heated like fandom discourses, so Dimitri nods and agrees and is body snatched by Chilon.

However, as for who might have read a bit of discourse, I can't believe the FEH writers are completely immune to it.

I mean, Seteth saying in his FB that he doesn't hoard funds and all of his share should go to orphanages, or, out of the blue, saying the Church of Seiros doesn't discriminate against other faiths or against people who don't practice the Seiros Faith felt like... the writers wanted to make a point lol

(I still suspect the FEH writers, especially when it comes to Nabateans, try to give them more spotlight because their base/native game completely ignored them, so we end up with absurdities like FEH caring and loving them more than the KT team who later made Nopes - PTA mom!Rhea was released in 2021, before Nopes and its "did you know Rhea forces people to marry? And no, no one will ever say this take is baseless, because the lords have to be fwends!")

Of course Hresvelg Tea means some script is released, then revamped, then re-revamped (at this point I've lost count at how many times B!Supreme Leader's MYH was modified lol) and adding Pat on top means you have to use Google Translate to check lines... but yep, FEH seems to look at fan content more closely, even if that content is, well, discourse...

there's been one thing about the VC/taxidermy communities that confuses me, and, it's the lack of educating people kindly? i had found a dead bird on my own property and wanted to keep its skull, and when i asked on reddit, i was banned from a subreddit for asking how to clean it, because it's a protected species. i didn't know that. instead of informing me of protected species, and why birds found dead are illegal to clean and keep, i got yelled at for "not caring about the law" and banning me w/o explanation. i think being closed off to people who don't know what is/isn't good or what is/isn't legal etc, is how more illegal practices come out. people who are yelled at and scolded for wanting to learn aren't going to care about the rules.

At least from my experience, the VC community on tumblr is overall pretty chill about explaining to new or uninformed members when they've made mistakes. But I definitely have seen people on the subreddits and fb groups wild out at other members just for being misinformed.

I like to give everyone the benefit of the doubt when they come asking for advice and I'm made aware they're talking about something that's restricted in thier area. Especially now that Lupa's animal parts laws page has been down for sometime, it's hard to find all the laws and restrictions without just reading through the animal parts laws in your country/state/province etc. (which I recommend doing every so often). There's no reason to be rude when trying to educate someone about various laws and restrictions because a good portion of the time people just aren't aware. And I definitely agree if you're treated with hostility after one mistake, you're less likely to want to approach the community in the future for advice.

Again, my issue is when I know for a fact members are aware of their problematic behavior and continue to do it regardless of how they were warned. Like I've gotten fussed at/called out before for buying from sellers I didn't know were sketchy at the time, but the point is that once I was made aware, I stopped all contact with those people and went to find better sources. No, I didn't need to be accused of being "unethical" for making a mistake, but regardless I don't want to intentionally support bad practices and do my best to avoid making those same mistakes. That's the kind of ideology that I wish was more prevalent in the community, but it seems that more and more people are just choosing to do what they want without understanding the ramifications.

Here it is! I'm gonna put the ramble under the read more (its A LOT of text). In case anyone has any question about it I'll gladly answer!

It's name is Cleaner

FP gets desperate and decides to crate a slugcat to deal with the rot

Cleaner is semi biological

He menages to make so the Cleaner can actually kill the rot, or at least remove them from the can

Although small compared to other slugcats it's still really deadly and quite agile

It has tendrils to help navigate the can but also to get rid of the daddy long legs

To not eat the neurons it eats the proto daddy long legs or the actual ones

It has the communication mark to be able to understand FP

At some point FP gets to infected and enters a "hybernation" mode, letting Cleaner on it's own

There are 3 ways things could go: The good ending, The true ending and the bad ending

I still thinking about the good ending, so I don't have everything figured out yet but the way I see is that, Cleaner menages to get rid of all the rot and FP turns on again, this however would still give him some major damage, so either he keeps living like this or SRS somehow gives him some help

The true ending, wich is more likely to happen, Cleaner can't deal with the rot fast enough and FP dies, it gets devastated and so follows the last order gave to him: Seek the void sea and transcend, and so it does

I think FB would not be as much of a jerk to doom the little guy to the same fate as him so that's why he let's it transcend

The one drawing of FP holding Cleaner is what would appear once it transcended (little guy just wanna be held :-:)

Cleaner has feelings, (FP didn't know about that)

That makes things even more angsty once you understand that Cleaner feel like a failure when it can't help FP

It heads straight to the void sea so it probably never meets BSM

In the bad ending FP dies and so does Cleaner

It gets infected and is slowly consumed by the rot as well

It can feel pain, but not as much as the emotional pain from letting FP dies as well as itself, it's horrible :(

If the good ending happens I think FP would let Cleaner free to go, but it chooses to stay with him, who knows when FP may need help again :)

FP would probably annoyed at it first, but would warm up for the little guy as well

He wont tell, but he really likes the company

It's like having a pet, but better!

If Cleaner somehow maneged to meet the other slugcats, as long as they didn't eat the neurons or damaged FB, their interaction would go like this:

Hunter: Would feel some sort of sympathy, they both were made to help, but hunter has a limited time

Cleaner would probably guide and help Hunter out of the can, even giving some spears that it find

Survivor: Doesn't trust they, might even be aggressive towards them, always keeping an eye on them in case it does anything it would consider bad

Monk: Who doesn't like them? Monk would probably bring something to Cleaner and be careful around the can

Cleaner immediately gains a soft spot for them

Maybe they play around together :D
