katniss rolls her eyes. his behavior (and hers) is nothing unusual, and, arm in arm with haymitch, she forgets momentarily of any sort of audience. "a party, in this place, is not a joyful thing." she presses on what feels so obvious — how can he feel comfortable to laugh and drink, when he knows what he knows? (who knew the capitol could bring some light to haymitch? it's all his prep team and the alcohol's fault, but still.) however they go at it, it is reassuring to have haymitch, even if she wouldn't admit to that fact; he knows so many people, and actually manages to ease them up. it never ceased to impress her how haymitch could actually be charming to these people. "are we teaming up with 11?" he had spoken, now and then, about his friend from 11, chaff; secretly, she had hoped it had been the case, even if she was not all that familiar with chaff, because she could not help but to gravitate towards the tributes from 11 (she probably shouldn't, though. she's made it clear they can not rely on her by now, hasn't she?). 

she is quick to fetch her own bowl, and even more so to fill it with some ladlefuls of her favorite soup — she’s not in a sampling mood right now — and to take a nibble out of a piece of plum. “he’s babysitting someone else right now.” she says. if their tributes had any chance to captivate some audience of their own, it would be by peeta’s graces, that much she knows, so she can’t even complain he can’t stick around her to hold her sweaty hand. that only means haymitch is stuck with her, but that’s his misfortune. “worry about the taste of the food, not mine.” she grumbles, with a quick movement fetching a seemingly normal roll and pushing it to her mentor’s hand. “gotta soak up all of that.” she explains, as if reasoning her taking care of him is necessary, even now.
