My cousin is a realtor and loves to post photos of his yard signs in the most mowed little lawns. The signs show him in a suit holding up a house key in one hand and gesturing to it with the other like it’s your own newborn baby he’s about to pass to you. A huge smile like an utterly desolate mother who covers very well. He has astoundingly straight parties at his house where he pipes in fog through the air conditioner. When we were kids and our grandparents were both alive and had a pool, we played a game where we yelled “to the lounge!” and struck poses underwater like we were hanging out in a living room. We’d stay in the pool practically all summer- at lunchtime our grandmother would bring out shells and cheese and at dusk we’d hurl green plums from her trees at bats. Her fruit trees died when she did, even though it had really been our grandfather tending to them. But that just means more space to mow, and he needs that mowing to pass the time now.
