potentially unpopular (but undeniably correct) Maria SH2 opinion incoming.

I am normally so profoundly against the "oh no, they un-sexified my video game woman" rhetoric but it is so critically important to who Maria is as a character and to the overall theming of the game as a whole, and to put her in a more conservative outfit is so blatantly missing the point that it makes me deeply worried for the direction of this remake and the dev's grasps on the games most central theme.

Silent Hill 2 is an exploration into the psychosexual guilt of a man who experienced carnal urges while his wife was dying of a mysterious disease and physically unavailable to him. Maria is the most concrete confirmation of and confrontation with this theme that exists in the game. A mirror of his dead wife, meant to look James in the face and say "this is what you wanted, right?" She HAS to be identifiably sexual on sight, because Maria only exists to be a purposeful avatar of this concept.

it is ESSENTIAL TO THE PLOT that Maria is aware of and in CONTROL of her sexuality. Not only is it critical to James' story and his overall theming, but part of the tragedy of Silent Hill IS Maria's own story. Maria, who feels like a real, whole person, is an invention of the town made explicitly and only to torture James. Part of the tragedy is that Maria herself was born (from a wish, ba dum tss) by a malevolent supernatural force to exist as a sexual object. Maria, who is brought back to life again and again to be killed brutally, begging for James to save her. Maria, who comes to understand that she will never live up to the ideal of James' dead wife, and will continually beg to be taken seriously as her own person. The only thing she has to offer is her sexuality, the one thing James couldn't get from Mary; the thing that brought him to the town, to her. It her is primary character function, and it wasn't done to objectify her for shits and giggles, or because the devs were pervs who wanted a sexy woman in their game. It was done because that, in itself, is a horrifying, gut-wrenching reality to be brought into, a fundamentally ABYSMAL reason to exist. It IS the horror.

Maria exists exclusively to be a confrontation with James' sexual guilt. She is a specter that haunts the hallways James walks down, a shadow that hovers over his shoulder, the object of his shame and desire. Maria is the worst, most carnal aspects of James' urges made manifest, standing before him, tempting him deeper into the clutches of the town, muddying his senses with her physical allure.

Maria's outfit actually IS that deep. Part of the tragedy is that she only exists to be objectified. It is a commentary in itself. This is the one time EVER (god willing) that I will champion a woman being in a revealing outfit in a video game, because this is the one time it actually fucking MATTERS

maybe this is an unpopular opinion but as an afab person these themes are so so important and identifiable to me. it reflects the horror of every day life as a woman and magnifies them tenfold. it is tragic, it is awful, it is sick, and the point isn't to glorify it, but to call attention to it. it forces you to engage, to not turn your head away. and that matters to me.

Personal musings on platonic relationships and experiences (as an aplatonic).

Friendship: An intense, mutually supportive, emotionally intimate, and potentially physically intimate platonic relationship with the expectation that this relationship will be intentionally sustained, maintained, and refreshed over time, by both parties equally, ideally indefinitely, without being damaged by changes in the lives of the parties engaged in the relationship.

Camaraderie (or fellowship): A situational feeling of platonic intimacy and good will between parties generated by a mutual pursuit of a goal, participation in shared interest, activity or hobby, or participation or defense of a shared ideal or belief. A sense of camaraderie is generated when parties are engaged together in something which may be bonded over.

A sense of camaraderie or fellowship might be generated by: sitting down with a new group to play Dungeons & Dragons, running next to someone for a few minutes during a foot race, attending an event to support the same cause, playing on the same side of a pick-up sporting competition, posting about the same fandom ship online.

Friend: Someone with whom a person shares a relationship of friendship. The key elements of a friend are an extended duration of time, and a level of emotional intimacy that is deeper than bonding over shared activities.

Comrade/Fellow: Someone with whom a person shares a sense of camaraderie or fellowship. The key elements of a fellow or comrade are a shared sense of purpose or interest, and a temporary or limited duration, and intimacy that are not deeper than bonding over a shared activity or interest.

I have many buddies/pals at different times, and happily engage in casual, temporary platonic relationships based on mutual interests.

I do not experience a desire or urge to create or maintain friendships over the expected duration at the expected level of commitment or intimacy.

I am capable of creating and maintaining friendships over the expected duration and at the expected level of commitment and intimacy despite my lack of desire to do so.

I find it difficult to understand when other people are experiencing feelings of friendship toward me.

I find it difficult to differentiate when people are experiencing feelings of friendship toward me versus when they are experiencing feelings of romantic affection toward me.

I find it difficult to differentiate the appropriate and expected level of emotional or physical intimacy in a given platonic relationship.

I find it uncomfortable when someone whom I consider a buddy or a pal and have a casual relationship with appears to desire a more intimate or sustained level of friendship.

Idk some malinois owners are so obsessed with their dogs it almost seems like a cult. They go on about the hours they put in and the drive their dogs have and it feels like they’re seeking purpose for themselves rather than what’s actually beneficial for their dogs? If Mals are so high maintenance how could ordinary people own them?

If a malinois is owned by a regular person the cult-like folk will go on and on about how those people must not have intense dogs or that their (the cult-like people's) dogs are soooo much more crazy and work worthy than the people with them as active companions lol.

Really the way they talk about these dogs is no different than the people that worship corporate work grind. Like the type of language is the same and everything.

I think calling Feferi going to attack Eridan like that self-defense because he assaulted Sollux IS a bit of a stretch, considering, like, Sollux VERY much did, like, agree to duel him. Understandable revenge? The most logical thing she could think of because she took his whole "side to Jack" thing seriously? Not worth being murdered as a 13 year old over? All true. But self-defense. definitely perhaps a stretch! he did not go to attack her until she was coming at him with a weapon!

something I keep repeatedly realizing, and then not writing about, is how wiki summaries and meta usually end up focusing on completely different things, and not even in the sense of "your wiki summary should be as neutral and factual as possible whereas meta is inherently making an argument" nor "wiki summaries tend to focus on the story itself whereas meta on actual play frequently, though not always, incorporates analysis of mechanics" but rather "meta is, 99% of the time, about a conversation that can be summarized in a single sentence if that."

#this is specifically about how i'm writing up the Sean Finnerty episode 3 summary #and the break in the cenote is absolutely crucial to understanding all the characters but sean especially #but also it's like one line in the summary bc it's not a plot scene.#same though with the essek and caleb tower scene like that's NOT the focus of what is a jam-packed episode #and also it's the most important thing of all time for meta purposes.#anyway it's a GREAT exercise and i think it's genuinely informed a lot of how I engage with fiction as primarily a meta writer re: works #and also tbh is why I have been side-eyeing people who consume primarily through shipping; they're bad at both of these.#candela obscura spoilers #cr tag

those two shots from the first episode of oniakashi showing satoko's reflection as her witch self, as she observes rena spacing out because of her home problems, and the second shot where she's presumably thinking of how she's going to inject rena at the nurse office struck me. satoko is so alienated from her surroundings after looping through her trauma for so long that it feels to her like everything is a 'dream'. she's so emotionally disconnected from the people she cares about as if she were separated by a glass wall. it's a literal interpretation of depersonalization/derealization.

satoko has now entirely compartmentalized the idea that she's doing anything bad. she's completely distanced herself from the violence she's committing towards herself and others. this is no different from a club game or one of her many traps. nothing is real including her friends until she's happy. until the reality wherein she can survive is within her grasp. everything else is a delusion and her friends are just pieces on the gameboard.

still, satoko gives rena the grief and remorse she doesn't give to mion, because rena has always fought against fate - the same fate satoko believes mion has not had to suffer through before that she and rena always do. satoko makes rena much like herself, that way they can be together in this.

rena's reaction to rina and her feeling that she has to kill rina in oniakashi is a parallel to satoko's reaction to rika and st. lucia as a whole. it's this sense that no matter what nothing can get better unless you commit an absolute. a certainty. others will not change or be better if you talk things out with them. satoko sympathizes with rena because she sees much of herself in rena.

it's different with mion whom satoko injects out of curiosity, the curiosity to see something she's never seen before playing out, but that's also an expression of her resentment towards mion - resentment because mion never had to go through what she and the others did while also being complicit in her ostracization and othering as a sonozaki in her mind. there's jealousy there. a bite of biterness. it's why satoko loses all the sympathy she had for rena when she's dealing with mion. satoko feels guilt over making rena go L5, but all of this is goes out of the window when it comes to mion. that's purposeful.

every fragment satoko weaves with eua is just another duel!!!!!!

duels are all about making Duelists and Brides relive anthy and akio's problems. it validates akio's horrible solution as akio is looking for the power to reinforce his worldview that enables his abuse of women and anthy. eua is the same. eua has turned her despair + loneliness into boredom and she sees the world as a stage to relieve that, but she only counts on the cruelty of the children of man. the savagery of the loops reinforces her worldview and validates her manipulation of satoko and her perspective of people.

satoko and anthy are also making them relive their trauma in a similar way, but they're more justified. satoko and anthy are trying to escape, find love, destroy themselves and their loved one. [REDACTED] from umineko is like them too btw.

the akashis are all about the thematics and parallels. gousotsu as a whole is. very utena!

#higurashi #higurashi gou #higurashi sotsu #satoko houjou #gamo.txt #those arcs aren't mere retreads they're different takes on earlier arcs with differences and those differences serve an important purpose!!#gousotsu is simultaneously a thematic remake AND a sequel #and to engage with gousotsu you need to engage with the former as much as the latter #gousotsu is a love letter to the survivors who want to improve but still need to lean on this feeling again enough to prop themselves up #it's a walk through memories and nostalgia for us and for satoko #it's revisiting and re-enacting and trying to understand because problems still exist in different forms #it wants to simmer in those feelings and thoughts #it wants to simmer in what makes things worthwhile to revisit once again #it wants to simmer in what truly makes something a remake #it's going through all of those events again but this time from the specific angle of what they mean for satoko #the entire show is satoko soaking herself in all these events and feelings again #the akashis are really fun concepts to me because they're all about being different takes on arcs from the original #oniakashi is all about giving you a more sympathetic take on rina whom i'd argue was handled a little poorly as a sex worker in the origina #and i like how it implicitly addresses some of rena's internalized misogyny in doing so #wataakashi is all about addressing how mion has always been passive/cowardly to a fault while also giving her an arc of her own #it's where sotsu messed up the most but it's still fun to chew on these concepts and i like what it was going for!#tatariakashi is the culmination of the critique of satoko being a damsel in distress in the original and a deconstruction of that #it's a critique of the message of unity and forgiveness etc etc and recognizing traumas can't be erased and happy endings are elusive #because the harm was still done #people don't want to admit that the world rika created covered up the original problems especially for satoko #who got the short end of the stick in terms of a real higurashi ending which is why they see this as a sick joke #sorry if this makes no sense to anyone i may be insane

My brain has gone back and forth on between which anime if arma or new is my favorite. Cause even with all its issues Arma means a lot to me, it’s the reason I got into getter and helped me through one of the worst times of my life- But then new is objectively better written and it drives me nuts compared to arma it’s not talked about ENOUGH despite all the stuff you can poke at from it’s plot and I’m trying to pinpoint that reason since the general consensus is “no one hates new and it gets a lot of fanart in the Japanese community yet it’s never deeply acknowledged so it feels unpopular”

So my standpoint is “do I keep investing into the popular iteration despite its issues or do I invested into the less flawed unpopular iteration when it comes to introducing getter to new people?” cause man as much as I’m a critical person of media I still can forgive some messy writing if I have a good time with it and can clearly tell the staff had fun making it, which is definitely armas case. (Though they absolutely had fun with new too)

i know it's going to anger a lot of people but i have to say it. separating the art from the artist, in the case of people like jk rowling, who are very much still kicking and actively hurting people, is quite simply impossible. investing your money and time in harry potter IS investing your money and time in jk rowling. as long as harry potter stays relevant she stays relevant, and can continue to influence politics. i know it's hard to give up something that for a lot of us was an integral part of our childhood and more (believe me, i was the biggest harry potter fan until not so long ago), but not giving it up is selfish. i'm sorry to say it but it's true. there are no neutral choices in politics--and this IS political. you either endorse her bullshit or you don't. you can't buy harry potter products and publicly engage with harry potter content and pretend like it doesn't have any repercussions. it does. it keeps her in power. and it sets a precedent, that we will let people say and do anything as long as they sell us shiny things to distract us.

i can't make any decisions for you, but i need you to be aware of what you're doing if you support jk rowling and anything she is associated with.

you are an active participant in a regime that seeks to eliminate trans people, and won't stop there, because the oppression of one marginalised group always leads to more. this is political. i won't allow you to cover your ears and pretend not to know it. you are making a political choice.

yeah so i dont get the "wasn't that some fucked up shit? anyway i'm Rod Sterling" mentality some people have towards different narrative reads. It's all sweet and cool to want to explore all the different variations of a fucked up scenario, but i'm gonna need the reasons for it. I need the "why"; why are we exploring this thing? Why is it important to explore this story? what am i getting out of it? and no it's not about morality.

I dont need a story to teach me "good" life lessons, though that'd be lovely. I dont need it to be an exceptional and exemplary narrative even, but i need my discoveries to be purposeful and meaningful. Sometimes the aim for an exploration of say, a very tragic story, is to simply experiences the different flavours and nuances and complexities of a deeply held personal emotion; sometimes it helps us find the mirroring and connection and relatedness that we need to feel seen and heard and understood. Sometimes it helps you parse out your own bullshit by taking it out of your head and putting it in front of you– i dont care what the reason is, but there's a reason. There's a purpose for every single endeavour you take on, even if you haven't discovered the reason yet. "i just want to experience a fucked up shit" lazy superficial thinking, dig deeper. I hate superficial and purposeless shit; and no i'm not gonna explore the 863796373th trending trauma porn piece of the day because "wouldn't that be fucked up?" nah. I dont care, it's got no use to me. I will absolutely respect the endeavour and make space for it if someone tells me something as simple as "it is relevant to me and my interests and experiences and my mental preoccupations, and helps me refine my humanity and my understanding of humanity in general", that is a lovely and true statement. But if someone keeps churning out worst possible fucked up sad scenarios one after another under the "wouldn't that be fucked up?" flag, i'm out, i dont give a fuck. take your sad shit somewhere else, i have absolutely zero space for purposeless horrible narratives that positively add nothing to my life and dont help me navigate it in any meaningful way.
