HOY BOY I FINISHED IT!!!
This one took ages but it feels so worth it!
Velvette dressed up her boys ofc ofc, they had to represent their girl!
Really though, I had too much fun with this one. I've been putting off background and fabric rendering practice forever, and this seemed like the perfect excuse for both! Fun fact, I actually almost went to university for fashion/costume design, so it was extra fun to try and come up with outfits that felt true-to-character for each of them, while making it feel like something Vel would make, and keeping the mid/late 2010's in mind.
I experimented a lot with this piece, and tried to make things look 'realisitcally textured' (Vox's screen being smooth, the sweatervest fuzzy, and Val's fluff furry, etc.). Just playing around a lot and seeing how I like to render things out! The style of this one ended up somewhere halfway between my kind of 'default' style and Hazbin's, and I really, really like the combination tbh.
Now a timelapse for you all! The is the one min version, but I'm thinking of posting my longer speedpaints on my YT, so if I do, i'll link it here later :3
Overall, besides Valentino's anatomy perspective confusing the fuck out of me, this was a super fun challenge for me and I'm really proud of how it came out!
i´m kind of really late for this because i always need way more time to finish my drawings than they actually require but anyway halloween means soul eater
Seen at least one (1) person complain about Crocodile losing his "unique faceshape" (now having the same facial structure that 90% of OP men have) after episode 1086 came out and like
To be fair, yes, the shape of his head HAS changed since his first appearance in The Year 2000. The thing is, Toei's latest Crocodile Offering is frankly more in-line with how Oda drew Crocodile during Impel Down and Marineford than ever before. Like yeah he looks different, but this change isn't new
But that comment really did make me think about how FUNNY it is just how different Croc really looks from his first appearance, like. The evolution in how Oda draws the bastard is so facinating to me
These are from chapters 155, 160 and 205 respectively.
No massive changes happening here in the middle of the arc, but you can kinda tell that Oda was definitely still figuring out how this asshole was supposed to look as he got further into the Alabasta (which is perfectly normal), which just makes That First Appearance look even funnier with time because. Who the fuck is that lmaooo
But then we get to see him briefly during Miss Goldenweek's cover story, this being from the cover of chapter 413!
All things considdered, bastard hasn't changed that much, still looks pretty much the same as in Alabasta. His head is maybe a little less elongated than before but still, chin is quite pointy still
And now we're in Impel Down at chapter 540. Again, dude looks about the same as he did before...
But it really doesn't take long for Oda to start reshaping this bastard's entire head at this point
Chapters 544, 546, 578, and cover of chapter 584
The chin is easily the most obvious part, but you can tell Oda kind of defaulted to giving him that same ol' evenly square-ish head most his conventionally attractive characters have during these story arcs (instead of the elongated shape he originally had).
And then we have the latest appearances, from 1082 and 1100
I do feel like comparing these to what's come before would be a little unfair considdering his health and eyesight and how those affect the artwork itself, but. They're there, for comparison's sake
But the point is still there. Crocodile's face shape has changed since his first appearance, but it's not like Toei was behind that, the change was (mostly) gradual and from Oda himself. And it mostly happened in 2008, so it's not new by any means either
So really, all Toei did was just update his character model because ⬆️ is more accurate than ⬇️ for One Piece right now
Regardless. The sheer difference between the two is hysterical to me
Between commissions I finally managed to finish this OC set of parent characters! If the looks aren't enough to show you who their kid is, the background colors match them ^_^ but of course more details below!

Looking into it it’s apparently clarified which criminals are under the command of which wardens. Pattadol has Otta and Fleki while Mithrun has Cithis and Lycion.
What’s interesting about that is Fleki and Lycion not being a package deal for one- but also was Lycion, as a werewolf, assigned to Mithrun due to that rarity and strength?
and is Pattadol in charge of simpler strengths (terraforming and familiars respectively) since this is her first mission, since she’s so new?
Cithis and Lycion were both arrested and became part of the canaries due to the magics they were involved with beforehand. So they just continued to specialize in their respective areas. Where Otta and Fleki were arrested for non magic reasons (human trafficking and other illegal sales)
It’s likely Otta and Fleki were ordered to specialize in particular magic fields for the benefit of the canaries
Fleki on magic types (in daydream hour 5);
im just imagining Flamela like "here captain mithrun, I've assigned you some of our most gifted convicts. This is cithis, she will be taking care of you during missions by use of charm spells. This is lycion, he is one of our werewolves who will act as your guard dog if need be."
and then "oh, pattadol, right. Uh. Here's a terraformer we arrested last week, and here's Fleki. They're just one of our many familiar mages, they tend to be stoned while off duty too though so keep an eye on them"
I just think they didn't do Sanji's eyebrows cause they couldn't make it work with the hairstyle they wanted, every Sanji actor looks like a cosplayer, which is not a bad thing when it comes to like live performances on stage or at theme parks, but they're SO clearly wearing wigs LMAO they do not look like "real" people that would exist since that hair (wig) is not natural looking at all (and we all know that Sanji would look wacky with both brows showing, that's why he NEVER shows them in the manga), Netflix is clearly going for realism and Sanji has "realistic" hair which is kinda ironic since One Piece and realism don't really go hand in hand but lol Netflix ¯l_(ツ)_l¯
This same goes for Usopp's nose too, but they have literally NO excuse for removing Sanji's little "beard", that shit should've stayed on since it IS one of the most realistic parts of his design lol but again it's fucking Netflix
Also hot(?) take: I think Oda just designed Sanji to have eyebrows like the spiral in narutomaki cause he found it funny, I think he added the Germa stuff to it later (I think he had a lot of Sanji's story planned out from the get go but judging from his comments he decided Sanji would have siblings much later so I think he also just added more meaning to the brows later)
Anon you cannoooot say "it's just unrealistic looking, all the other Sanjis wear obvious wigs" when Nami and Zoro are wearing the most obvious wigs ever. It has nothing to do with realism, Zoro's hair is bright green for god's sake. If a cosplayer on a $15 budget can add the literal key trait of Sanji's design, Netflix could've found a way to do it on a million dollar budget - possibly even with a more natural look!
I'm not going to lie I'm extremely sick of these excuses that everyone is just making up FOR Netflix, like can we just be in agreement it was honestly disappointing and lazy to remove a physical feature a LOT of people recognise Sanji for. A feature that is so easy to add. You can be excited for it while also going "Wow, that kinda sucks!"
Removing a feature of a character that he's literally recognised for in canon universe, that he gets nick names for and pointed at for MULTIPLE times, is just an extremely disappointing move by Netflix - especially considering it is currently story relevant in the original property right now. They just wanted to make him a conventionally attractive man without any of the design choices that actually make him stand out.
Sanji's eyebrows are also literally meant to be weird, if they look uncanny then that's kind of literally the point. It's why he gets made fun of for them.
Once again, this has nothing to do with the actors at all. They do not control their costumes lol.
Also my hot take here is, if you want to make a show with physical realism, why in the world would you EVER pick one piece to adapt for that 😭
(spoilers for the start of tma s5) a little pmv i made because the idea was driving me insane ... i've never been so possessed by an art thing but yay first time attempting a longer form project
I don't know anything about Beam Saber but please infodump about your dolphin
FINALLY ANSWERING THIS BECAUSE I HAVE THE ENERGY LETS GOOOOO. I uh.... am Really Into this character rn and actually properly infodumped here so it's under a readmore 🐬🐬🐬
ok so Sunlith is a second-generation uplifted bottlenose dolphin. that means that his parents were born in Ocean (the cetacean name for Earth), but they pursued the Uplift process, which changes parts of cetacean biology to make them more suited to life on land/in space/with humans/etc. (I can go into detail about what actually happens during Uplift but that would be its own post. 👀)
anyways! his parents went to space and Sunlith was born among a nomad fleet of stardrifters (another dolphin word for spaceship) in the outer solar system.
uplifted dolphins make up less than 1% of the Sol Union (the name for all space-faring beings from the Sol system), but they still have all the same rights and freedoms as humans... and particularly ambitious dolphins can make a killing as mineral extractors in the asteroid belt due to their exceptional piloting abilities. (cetaceans are naturals at maneuvering in low/no gravity 360 dregree space)
this was the profession of Sunlith's birth pod, meaning he grew up with the finest education available. this education allowed him to get into the Europan piloting division, which is especially sought after by cetaceans due to the fact that the best anti-grav exopods (mobility devices worn by cetaceans) come from Europan technology.
Sunlith wanted to go to Europa for a couple reasons: as a second-gen uplift, he's behind his peers in terms of fitting in with humans and other more culturally-adapted cetaceans. he uses traditional cetacean terms like 'maker' for humans and 'many-arms' for cephalopods (his favorite area of study.) basically, he's socially awkward and just wants to study tentacled creatures all day.
Europa is the only other planet in the solar system with native life forms - and they're possibly intelligent! they're called Nautilids and are convergently evolved with Ocean nautilus. by getting accepted as a frame pilot on Europa, Sunlith could both study his favorite organisms AND gain cultural prestige.
there was only one catch - the work on Europa is (you guessed it) mineral extraction! all Europan tech utilizes Europite, a rare metal only occurring on its namesake, for its coveted anti-gravity properties. the Nautilids on Europa are protected, but these protections are only enforced under a trade agreement with a hyper-advanced alien species called the Ouro. these aliens provide funding and equipment for non-invasive mining techniques in return for a cut of the Europite.
this finally brings us to the reason this is a Beam Saber campaign in a war setting: the Ouro are threatening embargo with the Sol Union because they want access to the human-inhabited extra-solar planet of Terra Brea, and these humans refuse to relocate. embargo would not only see Nautilid protections stripped away, but also a massive reversal of technological progress across the entire solar system.
and this is why Sunlith Joins The Peacekeepers (AKA the war. there is not much peace happening)... or, it's one of the reasons anyways. the population of Terra Brea is a religious sect called the Clusterists, a xenophobic group who don't take too kindly to dolphins. so that's also part of it. the Clusterists have their own stuff going on, the war is extremely unpopular, and it's messy and complicated!
I've REALLY been enjoying developing not only all the space-faring cetacean worldbuilding aspects of this universe, but also the whole fallout of an idealistic dolphin trying to fight for a cause he believes in only to discover that War Is Hell. he's VERY useful as a soldier because dolphins have higher psychic ability than humans, and he's used as a lie detector. his frame (mech) is also huge and has advanced shielding, since it was originally used for mining, moving ice sheets, and protecting Nautilids from harm.
to wrap up: Sunlith is very good at what's being asked of him. his call sign is 'Loyal' because of how his teammates view him as an order-following machine, but as he learns about human culture he's starting to hate his life more and more... but he still just wants to protect his little* squid friends and is experiencing extreme moral crisis.
will he succeed in any of his goals?! who knows!! but I'm excited to find out.
*they are not little at all actually. their shells are the size of ferris wheels and their tentacles extend like 100ft
i don't know if fishman island era sanji is genuine flanderization or im somehow giving him too much and too little credit at the same time. and maybe i was just frustrated that he regressed so bad after two years on Gender Island when i erroneously assumed (after watching iva + co at impel down express that queerness is as close to the ultimate ideal of freedom that one piece is about as you can get) that he would be better for the experience. and i know im going to turn around on him by the time i get to whole cake island but literally brother can we cut this shit out lmao
Hello!! I think the action thing is quite cool and your art is really beautiful. If you feel inspired for it could I suggest letter C or I with Freed (maybe in the demon form, or maybe not)? 🤗
This was my first time drawing Demon-Freed and I had way too much fun messing with the design.
