-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ahh my favorte time of year has come 😏 round again, happy Kataang Smut Weekend Folks! Thanks again to the mods over @kataang-dungeon for organizing this and making sure the fandom has an ample amount of Sweeties being spicy 🌶
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sokka noticed it during the small moments, when no one thought he was looking.
One thing about Sokka, though; he always looked out for his baby sister.
They’d all grown up together, the two of them and his best friend, Aang. Of course, that was a topic of heated debate between the siblings; who was actually Aang’s best friend. They often tried to one up the other just to get a rise out of the other. Nevertheless, the three of them were usually always together.
Katara and Aang spent most of their alone time together, though. They just spent a lot of time together, in general. The same way that he and Sokka did! Except…
It wasn’t the same. Not exactly.
The older brother didn’t think much of it at first. Katara had always been physically affectionate and doting, so the frequent hand touches and hugs really didn’t alarm him much. It was Katara’s way of showing support; more often than not accompanied by encouraging hope filled phrases.
That’s when he noticed the hair tugging.
The lot of them were all older now, studying their own various interests at the illustrious United Republic University. The first time he saw it (or rather, cared enough to take notice of it), Katara had dragged him and the rest of their friend group into a study session a few weeks before midterms. The Gaang started in the library but had, eventually, been shused out. Aang suggested moving their “study” session outside since it was such an unseasonably warm day in Republic City. Katara’s sour expression dropped the minute the airbender turned towards her for her approval. It was technically her study session they’d sabotaged and Sokka would be lying if he said he hadn’t felt the teensiest bit guilty (but only a little bit).
Anyway, the Waterbender was suddenly all shy smiles and giving in giddily as she peered up at Aang through her lashes, tucking a loose curl behind her ear. The arrow tattooed man grabbed Katara’s unoccupied hand and led the rest of them out into the massive quad area of their school. Of course, no one else but Sokka would notice the way Katara continued to play with her hair throughout the rest of the day.
Then, the giggling. Oh Spirits, the giggling.
The two of them would often laugh and joke at Sokka’s expense (much to his extreme annoyance). And, really, it wasn’t out of the ordinary for Katara to find Aang funny. He was a funny guy! That everyone could agree on, best friends or not.
This kind of giggling that Katara was doing, though… it was like she was laughing about a secret to herself; whether or not whatever Aang had said was actually funny.
Once, during winter break, Sokka caught the two of them late at night around the fire pit. He hadn’t interrupted them but he’d seen it nonetheless. They’d all stumbled home drunk from a pub crawl in the ever-expanding city in the part of the South Pole they called home. Sokka thought they’d be knocked out by now (they were all pretty drunk); the only reason why he was up was to use the restroom. It seemed that the two of them managed to sober up a bit to speak coherently enough to each other.
But not enough to be mindful of personal space, apparently.
He saw Aang whisper something in her ear, softly gripping the thighs that draped across his waist. Before he could even finish his sentence, his sister was giggling uncontrollably; leaning into the airbender and burying her nose into his neck. Sokka shook his head and stumbled as quietly as he could to the bathroom.
Nothing gave Katara away more than the blushing, though.
Or, maybe it was the cheek kissing that sealed the deal?
No, no. It was definitely the long, lingering stares combined with the “discreet” lip biting that did it.
Sokka couldn’t help but roll his eyes at how obvious those oblivious idiots were.
Yes, Big Brother saw all and could recall plenty of times where he caught the two of them tap dancing over the line of “just best friends”. Whether it was the blushing, the touching, the sighing or just general lovesick oogie teenage awkwardness, Sokka had seen it all. There was only so much two people who were attracted to each other could do without actually speaking or acting on said attraction. Besides, Sokka had been around for a few of Katara’s crushes now. If it wasn’t obvious to her or anyone else, it definitely was to Sokka.
Katara was in love with Aang.
The only problem was that it was obvious to everyone except Aang and Katara.

Small dumb ask but hear me out:
So I’ve been thinking how, in general, people of the Earth Kingdom and also the Southern Water Tribe are pretty accepting of different sexualities.
..and yet Sokka, who lived pretty isolated for all his life, still knew that telling Zuko that Hakoda and Bato were together would be a no-go-pretty-bad idea and was unsure on the Fire Nation’s stand on homosexuality. Which brings me to the conclusion that somehow he needed to have the the notion that being acceptable of queer people was not a norm and that some places condemn stupid shit like that. Considering this fact, can it then be that Kanna, baddest bitch from the Northern Water Tribe, lived in a oppressive, sexist, homophobic Society, and decided to create a little alternative community in the south where gender equality and gay rights were a thing???? Like, she literally said fuck you all I’m going to be an unsung hero here and permit Zukka to finally exist in peace? And maybe tell some tales to my grankids of how motherfucking stupid some people can be a little up north of here.
‘Cause, if that’s so..I don’t know, just hm redirect my thanks to her, that was pretty dope of her.
I don’t really know exactly what is going on here, but I’m in literal tears every time you post and just wanted to say hello and by all spirits, you really have given the world (and by that I mean me heh) a shit tone happiness, thank YOU <3
Not a dumb ask at all! I love this idea! Kanna is a bad bitch, and she definitely would embrace the more liberal views of the south, as well as making sure her son and family did not have to adhere to the rules of her own upbringing.
There will be more info on Hakoda's relationships with Kya and Bato in the fic and how that relates to their culture... although not for a while yet as there is apparently a billion chapters still to come 😂
I love these asks, and hearing people's theories and what they would like to see, so thank you for sharing! I am glad you are enjoying the fic so much! It's always really encouraging to hear ❤️
I hope your weekend is a good one!

ZKMonth22 Day 27: Tea Shop
Katara’s weekend shifts at the Jasmine Dragon went something like this.
If she worked on Saturday, she was working with Suki, who was rambunctious and fun and very interested in Katara’s brother whenever he came by to visit. Eventually Katara ended up convincing Sokka to ask Suki out, and then Saturdays turned into demands for childhood stories and dirt on Sokka with a sprinkling of talking about how amazing their dates were and eventually, their sex life.
If she worked on a Sunday, she was working with Zuko, who was quiet and withdrawn, but kind. So, so kind.
Zuko didn’t talk much, and as Katara was a very social employee this was a bit of a problem. She worried she was driving him crazy by prattling on about everything in her life while they worked, with Zuko nodding or making small comments at the appropriate times. But when she saw Zuko on campus, alone every time she saw him, she stopped worrying and began hoping that her constant talking was helping him in some way.
Apparently this hope was fruitful, because one Sunday after their shift Zuko asked Katara if she wanted to walk back to campus with him.
She agreed immediately, turning away to hide the blush that had spread across her cheeks. For a while now she’d been interested in Zuko as more than just a tea-making-and-serving buddy, which Suki had been teasing her incessantly about, but she didn’t have the courage to say anything to him.
To her complete and utter surprise, Zuko talked most of the way home. He told her about his mother, his home in the Fire Nation, his childhood friends, his sister, the turtleducks in the pond in their garden. By the time they reached the door to Katara’s dorm building, she was in so deep she knew there was no way she’d be able to climb back out again.
Thankfully, she didn’t have to. Zuko said goodnight, studied her for a moment, and then kissed her quickly on the cheek before walking away.
Katara smiled, holding her hand to her face, and let herself into her building.
The following Sunday, she had enough courage to ask Zuko out, and they stayed after work, drinking tea together and just talking until the early hours of the morning.
Iroh looked in on them from the kitchen, wondering if they were ever going to leave, and smiling at his nephew’s expression. The old man had hoped working for him would do Zuko some good and was glad to find it was doing more good than Iroh had dared to hope for.
He closed the door to the kitchen and slipped out the back, whistling to himself as he walked home.

A:tLA Re-Watch: Fine-Toothed Comb Edition
As promised! A third update next week is unlikely, but I’m aiming for the weekend after.
Book 1, Chapter 9 - The Waterbending Scroll
(0:55) Previously, on Avatar, Katara is kind of a waterbender. Aang is also kind of a waterbender. Katara lost her necklace, her one remaining memento of her mother, and Zuko picked it up. Aang learned that he has to learn three bending disciplines in, oh, seven and a half months, or bad things will happen.
(1:50) Sokka worries that if the flying bison hits a bump, the airbender might suffer a dangerous fall. I think we just chalk this one up to Sokka being worried that Aang’s panicky, and like his sister, expressing that in maybe a bit of nagging.
(1:56) We pick up with Aang panicking and having told the others what happened in Roku’s sanctuary already, offscreen. Good call - Katara and Sokka needed to hear the details, but the viewer saw the details and don’t need to hear them again secondhand. Instead, Aang just gives the high level recap to spark the viewer’s memory and also establish what’s on his mind.
(2:11) The party’s still weeks away from the North Pole, apparently.
(2:14) The scope of the task is apparently sinking into Aang. Seven and a half months to learn three disciplines that usually take years to learn. However, this is what I mean about the protagonists being proactive. The details are a bit fuzzy at the moment, but their reaction to learning about a specific Fire Nation threat is to make their own plans to deal. This in turn gets broken down into smaller chunks - step one is learning waterbending, and for that they need to get to the North Pole.
(2:19) Katara also offers to teach Aang the little she knows in the meantime.
(2:28) After Sokka suggests that they find a nice puddle for Aang and Katara to splash around in, even he has to admit that the forest waterfall the group finds is a nice puddle. There’s real pleasure in the work here from the production team, who drew this pretty setting for a one-off joke at Sokka’s expense.
(2:35) Likewise, I’m just going to continue to point out how the animators put a lot into giving Appa and Momo actual personalities. (And they’re doing most of the work, since no dialogue.) Appa doesn’t just land, he flops dramatically into the water and rolls over with every sign of enjoyment, while Momo screeches over being splashed.
(2:45) Aang’s first instinct here is to join Appa in a fun swim, but Katara gets him back on task.
(2:56) Sokka asks what he’s supposed to do while Katara and Aang practice waterbending, and Aang suggests grooming Appa. Again, a simple joke at Sokka’s expense, but this sort of thing grows into a longer-running and deeper issue. What does Sokka do while the benders in the group develop steadily more impressive superpowers? What can Sokka contribute, and how does Sokka feel that he’s making a meaningful contribution (as opposed to feeling like he’s relegated to camp chores)? We’ll see a bit more of this issue next episode.
(3:12) Meanwhile, in the B-plot, Zuko’s also practicing, until he’s knocked off balance by a sudden change in course.
(3:22) Exhibit #837 in ‘Zuko has no chill’ - when asking about the change in course, Zuko immediately characterises it as “mutiny”. Word choice used to show how insecure of his authority he is, perceiving everything as a threat and taking everything personally.
(3:27) Our first sighting of pai sho, and another small thing that grows into something greater. From what we learn later, Iroh losing his lotus tile was serious business. But for now it’s just one of those little humanising details we get for Zuko, as despite his irritation and poor grace, he humours his uncle’s desire to turn the ship to the nearest port and pick up a game piece.
(4:26) Katara starts with teaching Aang a basic move that she says took her weeks to perfect. Which shows how important teaching is - fumbling around by herself without any sort of guidance at all, Katara’s progress is painfully slow. And the group’s just learned that they’re on a deadline.
That said, Katara’s worked out the basic principle of waterbending herself: push and pull.
(4:46) Aang gets the move Katara took weeks to work out within ten seconds. When Katara’s a little upset, Aang soothes her ego, accurately pointing out that Katara had to work it out herself, from scratch.
(5:10) Then Aang immediately does Katara’s more difficult move, with a panache she doesn’t have (at this point). On Aang’s part, that sort of flair shows how he enjoys bending. He likes it for its own sake and wants to have fun with it. This is one of the things that helps Aang improve so fast.
But this leads him into a bit of completely innocent insensitivity. The series explores natural talent vs hard work in a couple of ways, over a couple of relationships. In this case, Aang doesn’t understand that for all her own talent, Katara doesn’t have his advantages. Aang has Katara now to point him in vaguely the right direction. He’s got the benefit of already having mastered one bending style; even if the movements and philosophy don’t translate from airbending, he’s almost certainly got a better idea about how to go about learning bending in general than Katara does at this point (even if he’s got other maturity issues that hinder him). He’s got whatever subconscious influence of his past lives. Aang just wants to do the cool thing with water, with Katara.
Another thing Aang doesn’t fully understand how waterbending is so wound into Katara’s identity. She’s the last waterbender of the Southern Water Tribe. Waterbending is how she’s set apart from most of her tribe, but also a connection to her culture, which has been so badly affected by the war. So Aang just doing her thing and doing it better, effortlessly, is a real challenge to her understanding of herself that she has to actually deal with. That’s on top of the natural frustration and jealousy of someone being better than she is, instantly.
(6:05) Aang’s issues with controlling his bending show up here, in a more mundane and less overtly threatening way than going into the Avatar state and blasting whole temples apart. He got so carried away with doing cool things with water that he accidentally washes the group’s supplies away. We’ll come back to this issue with firebending. More than once.
(6:18) Establishing shot of the town, which lacks both obvious Earth Kingdom architecture, including earthbent structures, and obvious Fire Nation architecture, including metalwork. Red sails in the harbour.
(6:23) And in this establishing shot of the streets, we see people in green Earth Kingdom dress, and in the background, others in red clothes. There are green hangings on some houses and red lanterns across the street. In the shot afterwards, there are even a few people in Water Tribe blue. Here we have a free port, controlled by neither Earth Kingdom nor Fire Nation, and from the looks of things, not much in the way of law enforcement…
(6:44) With only three copper pieces between the group, Aang buys a bison whistle on impulse and without any consultation. This turns out to be arguably the best purchase the group makes all series, but the way Aang went about this was horribly irresponsible.
(7:40) The party is ushered inside a suspicious ship by a suspicious hawker to see some ‘exotic curios’.
(7:55) With the appearance of the captain, it becomes pretty apparent that these are pirates. And assholes, because they’re suggesting Aang sell Momo.
(8:05) Katara finds the titular scroll.
(8:38) Sokka’s the one who puts together that the pirates’ goods were perhaps not obtained with utmost legality. Amusingly, he finds the pet reptile-bird as damning as the stolen merchandise, but that’s Sokka for you.
(8:50) Neat worldbuilding detail that Earth Kingdom nobles are participating in the trade of stolen cultural artefacts.
(9:04) Katara ducks out of frame while Aang ‘haggles’ with the pirate captain.
(9:21) And Katara’s back in frame, now insisting they leave.
(9:44) Here, Katara starts backing away before the boys realise that the pirates are an actual danger.
(10:18) For all she’s still inexperienced and untaught, Katara has definitely improved as a waterbender since episode one, managing to bend water out of a bowl and ice it over while running.
(10:36) Poor, poor cabbage merchant.
(11:00) Aang is also getting more comfortable with hitting back at people attacking him. Because this is a kid’s show, he still very much prefers to blind people and escape, but that was an air blast aimed directly at his opponents, carrying a whole bunch of rocks, with a firm “no, thanks”.
(11:26) And here Katara reveals that she stole the waterbending scroll. Which was worth 200 gold pieces, so not a small amount of money.
(11:47) Here’s a refreshing take. When Katara says that stealing from thieves is okay, Sokka’s objection isn’t that stealing is wrong, but that stealing like that was too much risk for too little reward. Katara responds to her brother’s line of argument, saying that they know it’s vital that Aang learn waterbending, which Sokka doesn’t have a convicing rebuttal for (even though he’s still clearly ticked about being put in danger like that). And Aang, who’s very much against violence, doesn’t mind stealing from pirates either. Nobody cares about the property rights of thieves here.
(12:08) We know that compared to a lot of other Fire Nation ships, Zuko’s is small and battered. In this port, however, it’s back to being large and menacing by comparison. It’s always a matter of context.
(12:34) Music night on Zuko’s ship, another joke we’ll see again.
(12:57) Zuko’s luck is in for once, as he overhears the pirates discussing Katara and Aang’s escape.
(13:16) Training accidents happen, as Katara accidentally smacks herself in the face with a water whip.
(13:24) Sokka is still pissed, rightly suspecting Katara’s motives in stealing the scroll were more selfish than selfless.
(13:40) Meanwhile, Aang just does the water whip without visible effort. This is one of the things I mean about Aang’s previous training in airbending likely being an invisible benefit to him (that neither he nor Katara fully appreciates) on top of his natural talent; he’s learned off other people before. He may have even had exposure to scrolls like that one before, even if he didn’t have to rely on them. It’s like reading those furniture set-up diagrams. Aang’s never assembled this particular table, but he’s built other bits of furniture off other instructions, where Katara’s having her first try now. Aang’s just trying to learn waterbending, where Katara’s learning waterbending and learning how to study.
(13:53) And here’s where Katara really crosses the line. Because the show does explore natural talent vs hard work with Zuko and Azula, we do see that Katara’s jealousy is a pretty expected, normal feeling. But normal as it is, it’s also her own issue, for her to work through. Her emotions aren’t the problem, how she’s been treating others is - endangering Aang and Sokka for primarily selfish reasons, and then lashing out at Aang.
Katara realises that she’s been an asshole almost immediately and apologises. She also promises that she won’t use the scroll anymore, which is not a sensible promise. Her desire to learn is not the problem. The scroll is not the problem. Dealing effectively with that jealousy is the problem.
(14:36) Back with the antagonists, Zuko’s got his brain turned on for this episode, as he correctly anticipates that people desperate to steal a waterbending scroll will be near a reliable and plentiful source of water.
(14:52) Sure enough, because Katara is still desperate to learn waterbending, she takes the scroll and goes to practice. Alone. Putting herself in danger. Interestingly, it looks like the group camped a decent way back from the waterline.
(15:42) Katara’s starting to use waterbending in combat more in this brief struggle. Unfortunately, it’s just her versus Zuko and a bunch of pirates. A fair fight in season two, but not in season one.
(16:08) This episode, in shots that focus on one half of Zuko’s face, we’ve got the burn scar. This time the mark of violence is meant to emphasise the threat Zuko poses, even as he offers to let Katara and Sokka go free and Katara’s necklace back.
However, notice what Zuko does not do - threaten Katara (or Sokka, if/when found) with further physical harm. He’s happy to threaten to burn the scroll, but not Katara. Zuko’s wrong to be trying to capture the Avatar and wrong to have assaulted and chained up Katara in the first place. But when you compare his actions to Zhao or Azula, it’s also clear that he’s reluctant to hurt others in a way that they aren’t.
(16:50) Sokka knows his sister. As soon as he realises she’s gone, he checks for the scroll.
(17:00) I do like how this show gives us a variety of weapons in fight scenes.
(17:08) There’s a problem with relying on air as a means of attack - it’s not actually solid. So it’s very difficult to deflect a weighted net, as Aang discovers to his cost.
(17:30) Iroh saying that the situation is, in fact, Katara’s fault is as funny as it is true.
(17:40) Sokka using his wits to get the Gaang out of this one. Doesn’t even miss a beat before pointing out that Zuko’s proposing a pretty uneven trade. For his part, Zuko’s real quick to realise what Sokka’s doing, not that he can stop it.
What follows isn’t one of Avatar’s great fight scenes, since it’s mostly a bunch of one-off villains fighting Zuko’s crew in the middle of a smoke cloud (which also saves on animation). Our heroes aren’t trying to win, just to escape in the confusion. The scroll is definitely lost in the confusion, though a cut in the middle suggests it lands near Sokka.
(19:49) Katara, freed by Momo early in the fight, is busy trying to steal the pirates’ boat. It’s beached, requiring waterbenders to free it. Two, as Aang says. Katara’s realisation that Aang respects her and her skills is what she needs to get her act together.
(20:21) Iroh breaks up the fight between Zuko and the pirate captain without much effort, pointing out that they’ve all been distracted and the pirates’ ship is sailing away. In what is definitely a rare occurrence, Zuko laughs.
…until the pirates steal his boat.
(21:00) When the pirates catch up to the Gaang, Aang uses waterbending on some scale to get rid of most of the pirates, but Katara uses the water whip. Aang recognises what she’s done, Katara says she couldn’t have done it without Aang’s help. Another thing to help community- and relationship-minded Katara through her jealousy, because learning together with Aang makes them both better. It’s not a competition but a collaborative effort.
(21:51) Aang blows the bison whistle.
(22:12) Then Katara and Aang get in a fight with physics, using waterbending to create a whirlpool in front of the waterfall they’re heading towards. (Speaking of, minor continuity error - if Zuko and the pirates came upstream from the ocean, they would have had to sail up this waterfall, unless there was a fork in the river and the Gaang is currently sailing down a different branch.)
(22:32) Appa ex machina, now justfied via bison whistle!
(23:05) Iroh reveals to Zuko that his missing lotus tile was in his sleeve the whole time. Zuko then grabs the tile and throws it in the river. Poor kid just imposed a shaggy dog story on himself.
(23:25) Katara’s full apology to Aang spells out the moral of the story, which also shows that Katara knows exactly what she did wrong that episode. She doesn’t repeat her mistakes, either.
(23:35) With her lesson learned, Sokka returns the scroll so Katara and Aang can both learn - albeit not without a bit more ribbing.

Misc #1 "All I do is drink coffee and say bad words
Same tho. Actually not the same bc I just drink coffee. Day and night. That’s it.
......
Aang was studying at his favorite coffee shop with his friends. They all had their respective work to do, but there was strength in numbers when it came to productivity… Usually. Sometimes.
Okay, not really, but it helped to know that they were all in it together.
Currently, Katara was complaining to Sokka about how his organization system of ‘writing things down on his arm’ was not sufficient enough (which he argued did work because he had never missed an assignment to date), Zuko shuffled between actually trying to study and talking to his uncle, the owner of the shop, and Suki and Aang were the only productive ones it seemed. Both were actually studying for upcoming exams and successfully blocked out surrounding conversations so that they could get shit done.
Aang was on a roll, and he was hoping that he would be able to finish studying early and have the weekend to himself, then all of a sudden, someone new joined their study group.
Someone pretty.
He never met the young woman before, but she apparently knew almost everyone else at the table.
“Here Toph, come sit next to me,” Zuko said. The girl, Toph, sat between Zuko and Aang, and Zuko introduced the two.
“Aang, this is Toph. Toph, Aang. Toph and I knew each other growing up, and I invited her to come study with us.”
“Nice to meet you,” Aang replied.
Toph nodded in his direction. “Likewise. Now Zuko, where’s my fucking coffee?”
Zuko didn’t even blink at her crass demand, and placed a coffee in Toph’s hand. And that was when Aang noticed what should’ve been obvious: she was blind.
He didn’t have much time to think further on the revelation, for Toph turned back to him and began a conversation. “So Aang, is it? Odd name.”
“Toph,” Katara whined. “Do you have to be so… opinionated?”
“It’s not an opinion, Sugar Queen, just a fuckin’ observation!”
“That was kind of your opinion, Toph,” Sokka replied.
“And no one asked for your shitty comment, Meathead but here we are, listening to it.
“All I said was that it was an odd name. Not that it was bad, or gross. Just odd. Would you agree or disagree, Aang?”
All eyes turned to him, waiting to hear his reply.
Aang raised an eyebrow at the table, but retorted, “I think that these are bold words coming from a woman whose name is Toph.”
Toph grew a shocked expression on her face, and Aang worried that his jab was too harsh, but she just laughed it off and replied, “Aangy’s got fucking clapbacks! I like it.” Aang laughed at that, and both Toph and Aang took a sip of their beverages.
And after that, the two fell into a conversation groove that no one else could match. They volleyed remarks and jokes at each other, made snarky comments about school or the work they had to do, and told embarrassing stories they had about their mutual friends. Anyone that walked by them would’ve assumed that Toph and Aang had known each other for years.
As the day stretched on, the coffee refills piled up, homework was ignored, and many swear words were thrown around the table, mainly by Toph. And then all of a sudden, the day was over, the shop was closing, and it was time to go home.
The group gathered around the exit of the coffee shop and finished up their conversations before they parted ways for the night.
But Aang didn’t want the night to end. He spent the entire day ignoring his responsibilities just to talk with Toph, and he didn’t regret it one bit. And despite having spent study time chatting with the mysterious girl, he felt like there was so much more to learn about her. So he dared to be bold one more time before the night ended.
“Hey Toph, what are you doing after this? We could, uh, grab something to eat if you’re hungry.”
Toph smirked at Aang and continued the playful banter they started up hours ago. “You asking me out, Aangy?”
Aang laughed, but didn’t outright deny the question. “Hey, all I’m saying is we have a lot of topics we need to finish discussing and the night’s pretty young. We could start up new conversations too, if you’re up for the challenge, that is.”
“You act as if I have more shit to say to you,” she teased.
“What, you’re really gonna tell me there’s nothing else you’re thinking about?”
“I’m a simple woman,” she replied. “All I do is drink coffee and say bad words.”
Aang smirked and shook his head. “Oh, I think there’s more to you than meets the eye.”
She raised an eyebrow. “That so?”
“Mhm.” Aang nodded. “And I plan on finding out as much as I can. If you’ll let me, that is.”
Toph said nothing for a moment, just sipped on her to-go beverage while Aang waited patiently for an answer.
Then, she pointed a smirk in his direction, grabbed his hand, and lightly pulled him along with her. “Let’s see what you can find out, Aang.”

hi! can you do prompt #7 for zuko? post-war were the reader visits the fire nation to see zuko after traveling with the gaang? thanks!
prompt 7: “i've missed you” kiss ___
You weren’t sure where you stood with Zuko, so you were a little nervous about going to see him.
It was clear since the day he’d joined the Avatar in the Western Air Temple that the two of you had something- nasty freakin’ chemistry as Toph had called it- and while the two of you never addressed it, you never really needed to.
So as you spent more time together, you got closer, more affectionate, and maybe you didn’t put a label on it, but there was no one else for you, and no one else for him.  You shared a few kisses, snuck off on a few dates, and even shared a tent.
But then he was crowned Fire Lord, and you had business as an Earth Kingdom Ambassador to attend to.  Apparently making peace across the globe was a hard thing to do.
You wrote each other often, sharing wild stories and boring ones, and always signing it with how much you missed seeing one another.
Four months had passed now, and Zuko had invited the whole Gang to the palace for a weekend of catching up and relaxing.  It was clear everyone needed a break, and it had been too long since you’d all seen each other.
You'd been ecstatic, so much so that you could hardly focus on any of your tasks, all you could think about was being with Zuko again.  Your heart swelled with love and you swore it could have burst.
But now, as you sat on Appa’s saddle and saw the palace become closer in view, you were about ready to start chewing on your fingernails.
What were you and Zuko? Why had you never thought to ask that question before? Are we still together? Were we ever really together in the first place? What if he’s with someone else? What if-?
“(y/n), quit overthinking,” Katara says, flicking her friend’s ear to bring her out your ear to bring you out of your thoughts.  “I think you’re the only person Zuko even likes.  Like at all”
“He likes me!” Sokka shrieks.
Katara winces.
“Really, (y/n), you’re definitely it for him” She says.
It eases your nerves a little bit, and you give her a small smile.
“Thanks, Katara.  You always know what to say”
“Okay, so maybe Zuko’s in love with (y/n), but he still really likes me! Hell, I’m his best friend!” Sokka argues, but neither of you know who he’s arguing with.
Aang lands Appa a few minutes later, and you think you might pass out.
The excitement and the fear is mixing together and you’re starting to get a stomachache.
Zuko is standing on the front steps, eagerly awaiting you and your friends’ arrival.  He looks so good in his robes that you’re now completely sure you’ll pass out.
“(y/n), come on,” Sokka mutters, shoving you slightly so you’d get off of Appa quicker.  “You can’t just hide from him”
“Are you sure?” You grumble back, and slowly make your way off of Appa.
But before your feet can reach the ground, you’re scooped up, and you shriek in surprise as you look down to see Zuko’s wrapped his hands around your waist, and he’s quickly pulling you down.
“(y/n)! I missed you so much, you look so different!”
As he sets you down on the ground, you’re gaping slightly out of surprise, because in none of your imaginings of how this went, you didn’t foresee this.
“I- I do?” You mumbled, subconsciously reaching for your hair, thinking it must’ve grown since the last time you saw him.
“Yeah, but also the same, spirits, you’re so pretty”
Now you’re gaping and blushing, because you’d just spent all day flying through the air, and here he was in royal silk robes.
“Really?”
“Really” He grins back at you.  He’s never been more confident about anything his entire life.
And then he’s cupping your face and leaning down and capturing your lips.  Again, you’re surprised, but this you know how to react to.
You melt into him, which he gladly accepts as he drops his hands to your waist and deepens your kiss.
It reminds you of the last one you shared before you left for Ba Sing Se.  And just thinking of the time you’ve spent apart makes you kiss Zuko even harder.
Aang, Katara, and Sokka are awkardly waiting by Appa, kicking at the ground and looking anywhere but at the pair who seemed to think they were alone for some reason.
When you parted, Zuko was still grinning, and he pushed a loose strand of hair behind your ear.
“I missed you too,” You told him, and he cupped your cheek lovingly.  “I actually... I didn’t think that we... I mean, I wasn’t sure what we were, so I didn’t know if you...”
“Really?” Zuko asked, genuinely surprised.
You nodded sheepishly, before leaning into the palm of his hand.
He chuckles, and shakes his head at you.
“(y/n), I’ve written you at least twice a week for the last four months,” He reminds you, and you shrug your shoulders.  “What part of me telling you- in every letter- that I love you and can’t wait to see you made you think that we weren’t together?”
“I mean- you never explicitly said- I don’t know, okay? I just missed you a lot and I didn’t want anything to change”
He has to laugh once more, before leaning down and sealing your lips in a kiss again.  This one far more gentle than the last.
Sokka rolls his eyes when you started kissing again.  He huffs and crosses his arms before leaning back against Appa, accepting the fact that he’d probably have to wait another five minutes before Zuko would notice him.
“Yeah.  Nothing’s changed.  (y/n’s) still the favorite,” He grumbles bitterly.  “And I’m starting to think he likes her more than me!”

Handyman Sokka
“Aang this is impossible!”
Zuko is hunched over a pile of dark wood and black metal beams, screws and flat rings strewn about the carpet. He’s gripping an instruction manual hard enough to tear the pages in one hand and a rusty screwdriver in the other.
“No, it isn’t. Just read the instructions.”
“I’ve read the instructions 4 times! They’re written in jibberish and I can’t figure out the pictures! I knew I should have just gone to an actual furniture shop and paid for an already assembled desk! Ikea furniture is always such a pain in the ass! But apparently I never learn from my mistakes and my punishment will be endlessly assembling desks and side tables and bed frames in my own personal hell that is move in week!” Zuko exclaims, once again cursing the fact that his depth perception is fucked and his patience is thin.
Aang is silent on the other end, likely waiting to see if Zuko is just catching his breath before starting round two of his anti-Ikea diatribe.
“Sorry Aang, I’m just so frustrated.” Zuko huffs, feeling all the pent-up pressure leave his body and setting the screwdriver down as he lowers his elbows onto his knees.
“No kidding. I’m glad you’re taking it out on me instead of a poor sales person, though.” Zuko chuckles at that. He knows he can be a bit of a hothead but he’s not that much of an asshole (not anymore, at least).
“Where are Jet and Haru,” Aang asks, “why can’t they help you out?”
“Ugh, they’re still so honeymoon-y,” Zuko pretends to gag. “I’m honestly scared to even walk by their room let alone interrupt whatever unspeakable thing they’re doing.”
“Pretty sure you know all about the unspeakable things your ex is doing with his current boyfriend, Zuko,” Aang retorts far too lightheartedly.
“Yeah but it’s not like I want to think about it! It’s so—“
“Oogie?” Aang offers.
“Exactly! Oogie!”
“Okay, well, my schedule is pretty packed this week with orientation activities and TA stuff, but if you can wait till the weekend I can come by and make sure everything ends up assembled instead of in a smoking pile of remains on your front lawn.”
“You’re never going to let that go, are you?” Zuko sighs over the phone. Apparently, if you light one dresser on fire suddenly you’re like a serial arsonist or something. Personally, Zuko thinks the whole thing got blown a bit out of proportion.
“Nope,” Aang pops the ‘p’ and Zuko can practically hear his smirk over the phone.
“Hey, it’s ok, I know you’re busy. Maybe I’ll just hire someone to do it.” Zuko sighs, slumping his head between his knees.
Ever since Zuko’s morally corrupt and abusive father died, leaving his estate to Zuko and his sister, he’s been trying to spend his father’s money in ways he hopes will make him roll over in his grave. Zuko doesn’t even know why he was mentioned in the will. His father hated him and they hadn’t talked for over 5 years before he died. Probably still worried about his reputation from beyond the grave, Zuko thinks.
Shortly after his death, Zuko told a family friend of his plan to throw money at things he knows his father would have despised him for. They countered with the classic, “one should not speak ill of the dead,” to which Zuko had responded, “then he shouldn’t have been such a piece of shit before he died.”
So yes, Zuko would be more than happy to pay someone to assemble furniture for him because it would have infuriated his father to no end that he couldn’t just figure it out for himself; that his “hard earned” (aka stolen) money is being wasted. Zuko’s not sure if he believes in an afterlife, but if there is one he hopes Ozai is watching in disgust.
“You sure? I really don’t mind—“ Aang starts before he’s interrupted by a much more chipper sounding Zuko.
“No, no, don’t worry about it, I’m just gonna hire a handyman to do it.”
“Okay, if that’s what you wanna do,” Aang says with only a hint of hesitation in his voice. Zuko has known Aang for years, having attended the same fancy international boarding school since junior high and now the same university. While Zuko hadn’t disclosed the truly horrific details of his and Ozai’s relationship, Aang picked up on enough to understand why he was more than happy to spend a small fortune on certain things. Returning to school one fall with a sizeable scar covering the left side of his face was probably a pretty good hint.
“Actually I know someone who might be able to help you out! Remember last semester when I accidentally signed up for that math class?”
Zuko laughs into his phone, “how could I forget? You had a Zuko versus Ikea style rant about how the registrar needs to change the format of the course signup page because sometimes course names are so unclear and—“
“Yeah yeah yeah don’t make me relive the worst mistake of my academic career.” Zuko can practically hear Aang wincing over the phone. “But I met a guy in that class who’s like, a math genius. I honestly think Piandao even had trouble understanding his final project cause, like,” Aang makes a noise that Zuko assumes is an explosion sound, “mind blown.”
“Buddy, I’m really very happy that you made a friend, but what does this have to do with my lack of places to sit, work, and sleep?” Zuko asks, trying not to let his words drip too heavily with annoyance.
“Well if you’d let me finish,” Aang continues with a dramatic exhale, “we hung out a couple times and he mentioned that he sometimes does general handiwork for extra cash. I bet if I asked he’d be down to help out with your stuff, and he’s probably cheaper than a professional.”
Obviously, cost isn’t really a consideration, but Zuko can still sully his father’s memory without being an outright spendthrift.
“Yeah, that sounds great actually, thanks Aang.”
“What are best friends for? Oh, also you owe me a sushi night.” Before Zuko has time to offer a faux annoyed comeback, Aang chimes, “later, hotman!”
Ugh, Zuko hates that nickname.

Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
So ... 6 fanarts. This is where I left off and the first thing I post after a long absence.
I could write an entire essay about my long absence, with lots of colorful metaphors and a lot of "sorry", but it all fits into one simple phrase "work in 2020". And damn it, it takes everything: time, energy, and desire to communicate, but it's just my problem. To put it a little more broadly, for me, this year, drawing is receding more and more into the background, and it's extremely annoying.
I understand that this blog is more like an old closet and there is less than none activity, but I will try to fix it... at least in the next month, to end 2020 on a positive note.
Now, about the fan-arts…
The top six is only the first part of fan art for requests from Tumblr (next weekend I will try to post the second part as well). Here are: Aloy (from Horizon Zero Dawn), fanarts "someones oc you really like" (OC's of @askaquabutterfly  and @detectiveashcroft =^w^=) and trio from Star vs. The Forces of Evil (Ludo, Eclipsa and Gemini).
The second six is also part of the fan art, but they are from the VK requests (where I appear as rarely as on Tumblr ... apparently social networks are not my thing at all>_<). There are: Connor and Gavin (from Detroit: Become Human), Cliffjumper (from Transformers), Alastor (from Hazbin Hotel), Princess Moon Butterfly (from Star vs. The Forces of Evil) and Malena (from JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure).
The third six is also a part from VK. Here are: Cassandra (from Rapunzel's Tangled Adventure), Aku (from Samurai Jack), Polpred (From "Land of Good Children"), Mulan (from" Mulan " (1998)), Xena (from Xena: Warrior Princess) and Sokka (from Avatar: The Last Airbender)
The fourth six is, too, a part from VK. There are: Sulfus (from Angel's Friends), Morgart (from Heroes Of Envell), Mawrasite (from Villainous), Sesshoumaru (from Inuyasha), Geralt (this one from the Witcher 3: Wild Hunt) and Sova (from Valorant).

publish part of the street racing au? 👉👈 congrats btw!!!! 🥺🎉
thank youuuu!!
i can’t exactly publish a part because it’s a one shot but! i can give you a little sneak peek 👀
hope you enjoy!
He was good at it, for a 13 year old that is. Sokka was more of a technical driver, following the rules to the letter. Getting distracted by focusing too much on the sounds the machine was making and how to theoretically increase its power.
Hakoda didn’t let him drive the car outside of their block, but that was okay with Sokka. He mostly just wanted to get rid of that light noise that was coming from somewhere underneath the hood of his dad’s old Corolla.
A year passed and both Hakoda and Sokka realized Katara wasn’t going to be happy driving around the block as soon as her foot hit the gas pedal for the first time. Apparently, she didn’t really need Hakoda teaching her how to drive.
(“Have you been driving behind my back? How did you know what to do?” A very impressed Hakoda asked as soon as Katara started the car and drove.
“Watching you teach Sokka was really all I needed, after that it was only figuring out the footwork and the stick!” Little Katara had said, big grin plastered on her face.)
Ever since then, Sokka realized they were born to become a racing team. Katara was a natural at driving cars, the vehicles came alive as soon as she was behind the wheel. Sokka couldn’t really compete with that, and he wasn’t even going to get butt hurt about it. He preferred bikes over cars anyways.
After all, he got to tinker with the cars whenever he wanted like this, it was a dream come true. Just like how Katara had a connection with cars, Sokka was just as good with what was inside them.
He liked to think of it as a green thumb but with cars.
He always instinctively knew what to do with them. Of course, studying always helped to broaden his knowledge, but that was mostly for theory. When it came to looking at what was under the hood, Sokka just knew.
Reading about engines and different parts was okay, but getting to play with the actual thing? It was incredible. It was fun.
It was a lot of fun.
Buying different parts, building engines, fixing cars. It was too much fun.
Everyone does say that choosing a job you love means you’ll never actually work a day in your life.  And quite honestly, Sokka agreed. He got his first official side job at his dad’s friend garage shop. He helped out during the weekends all throughout high school. Bato was cool, he had been a friend of the family for what felt like ages.
But most importantly Bato was very encouraging about Sokka’s love for the machines. He kept bringing new parts, new tools, for him to play with. Be it at the shop or back at his house, Bato always brought something for him.
It was the day Katara turned 17, when they were aimlessly driving in the early hours of the morning that they heard it.
The roar of the engine.
The screeching of the tires against the asphalt.
And the cheering of a crowd.
A very loud crowd.
Katara and Sokka looked at each other before she hit the brake and turned the car around, driving in the direction of the noise. They slowed down as soon as they saw the large group of people, both sides of the street overflowing with them.
They jumped off the car and ran towards the crowd just in time to see a car whooshing past them, the mass going insane. As soon as that first car passed them, three more crossed the finish line.
When Sokka turned around to look at his sister, she was already looking at him, starry eyed, smirk on her face.
“Let’s do this.” Sokka spoke through a grin, curling his hand into a fist and holding it up for Katara to bump with her own.

I have this idea stuck in my head for a canon divergent fic where Aang and Katara get divorced when Tenzin is around 7-8 years old, and since I couldn't find the year Bumi and Kya were born (if any of you know please tell me) I'll just say Kya's around 11 and Bumi's 14(?). They stay friends and co-parents, but they just weren't working out and they knew it, Bumi gets it because he's a little older and he realized his parents weren't happy, Kya doesn't totally get it at first but then she comes to terms with it and Tenzin doesn't understand at first, and when he does he absolutely hates everything about it and just wants his parents back together.
They have joint custody and Katara lives in Republic City, wanting to expand her horizons and try new things, and even getting a job as a healer because I know that she wouldn't want to just be a housewife. Meanwhile Aang stays in Air Temple Island, going over to Republic City a lot though, and still travelling around the world when needed of course.
I don't really know how but I would see Katara and a reformed Azula kind of starting a flirtationship, before actually starting dating, simply because I really got into that pairing recently but I also think that the concept of parent Katara starting to date socially inept Azula is just amazing (I had a couple of ideas like maybe Katara was already helping Azula adapt to Republic City as a favor to Zuko, and she realizes how much she’s changed and how fun she is to be around, or maybe they run into each other at the hospital, or at a coffee chop and have a ‘meet cute’ though not really because they already know each other, or maybe at a party and at first they’re still antagonistic towards each other, and they keep running into each other so they slowly start becoming friends and then girlfriends, I don’t know, I’m just not sure yet)
As they're still friends Katara would talk to Aang about it, because as we learned from the comics in the Southern Water Tribe same sex couples were not really talked about, and that was in 173 (?) AG (correct me if I’m wrong). And of course, we know that Aang would be totally chill about it since he’s a monk, he would probably be more concerned about the fact it was Azula and tell her so, encouraging her to follow her heart because he trust her judgement, but telling not to be careless.
A couple of months after that starts happening and Azula and Katara have gotten serious she introduces her to the kids. Bumi loves Azula instantly because she’s badass and she doesn't really know how to handle it (though honestly she doesn't really know how to handle any of her girlfriend’s children), Kya is skeptical but she thinks Azula is pretty and cool so by the end of the dinner she likes her well enough, but Tenzin is difficult as always. Now, we know Tenzin has a temper but I don't know if child Tenzin would be prone to temper tantrums and if he would be outwardly malicious to someone he just met, but he definitely wouldn’t be chummy with Azula, probably even glaring at her a lot, and Katara would be able to tell he didn't like her (though he just doesn't like her on principle because even though she's kind of weird he thinks she's cool, but he wants his parents together). Both Katara and Aang would try to talk to him about it and try to get him to give Azula a chance but it wouldn’t really change his mind at first.
Sokka would be incredibly suspicious of Azula, because he's Sokka, but Suki would keep him in check when they visit and are inevitably forced by Katara into a double date (which Zuko and Mai had warned them about, apparently Katara loved double dating since the divorce, even before Azula. Once, she forced Aang to go on a double blind date which ended in disaster, but became a very funny story after a while). With time he would lose his suspicions and actually come to like Azula, because of how happy she made Katara mostly, but he would never admit it to her face, their relationship mainly consisting of empty insults to one another, despite actually coming to care for each other.
I feel like the divorce would sort of give Aang a reality check and make him spend some more time with his kids, though I may be totally off base. But he would hang around Republic City as much as he could, because he already only gets to see his kids half the time (I picture them trying to divide their time with the kids as evenly as possible, even though ultimately due to work Aang spends less time with them). And by being in the city a lot it would give him more time to hang out with Toph when the kids were at Katara's.
Then their friendship would flourish into something more, but you know slowly. Aang would have lunch with her when the kids were at school, they would just hang around her house, with Lin and baby Suyin (because Su would be around 1-2 years old at that point), Aang would try to help the police force after hearing more of Toph's stories and realizing a lot of what he does lately are just meetings and wanting to help, but she would mostly be annoyed at him when he tried to help, like with Yakone, only sometimes letting him tag along.
Their feelings and attraction grow with time and they both know the other feels it too, but both of them don't really know if it's a good idea so it remains unspoken for a while. 'Uncle' Aang becoming a regular at the Beifong house during the week, unless it was one of his days with the children, or he had work. And 'Aunt' Toph and the girls sometimes tagging along on weekends at Air Temple Island. First time there Toph calls Aang out for spending too much time with just Tenzin and telling him to let him and Lin play in the mud for a while and to spend time with his other children. Which he does. After that they have a deep, long, conversation about parenting. I picture Katara and Azula also going to Air Temple Island on some weekends, just like I see Aang having dinner at Katara's on some nights when he doesn't have the children. Tenzin still doesn't totally warm up to Azula as his mom’s girlfriend, no matter how many times Katara or Aang talk to him about it, but he starts liking her more as an individual after some time.
Lin and Tenzin weren't really friends yet before, but with their parents spending a lot of time together they become best friends, becoming practically attached to the hip despite Lin being about a year younger than Tenzin. Though Tenzin sometimes gets jealous that Lin and Su get to see his dad when he doesn’t because he's at his mom's.
After getting a reality check from Toph, Aang starts analyzing his relationship with his children and realizes he probably has been neglecting Kya and Bumi quite a bit, even if unintentionally. Though at this time I don't think it was quite as bad, since he hasn't started travelling all around with Tenzin and leaving them in the dust. He starts to spend more time with his kids, not just all three of them or even just Kya and Bumi, but also time with each of his children one-on-one. Having a daddy-daughter day with Kya, and taking Bumi to watch his first pro-bending match, letting Kya paint his nails, going to Bumi's school events, teaching him non bending defensive fighting styles, playing with Kya with Waterbending, and of course always still paying attention to Tenzin and spending time with him as he always did. And just overall spending more time with all of them, bonding, even if they're doing nothing.
One night Toph and him get into an argument, because he got involved in some gang related investigation and he tries to 'protect' her, but she can protect herself and she doesn't need him to do anything for her, he of course knows this but watching the woman he's grown to love in danger didn't let him think straight in the moment, of course the realization that he was actually in love with Toph now doesn't come out of his lips. They fight it out with words, and they get pretty loud, they hope that the girls can't hear them since they're at Toph's house, but the fighting just gets worse and worse. And then he just kisses her and she kisses back and then, before they can do something they can’t take back, they break apart, knowing they're being stupid and impulsive and deciding to continue their conversation the next day.
They don't continue their conversation the next day, however, because Toph avoids Aang all day while he tried at every available moment to reach her, failing time and time again. That afternoon he has to pick up his kids so he decides to continue his attempts the next day.
He only manages to reach her at night, in her house, once the girls are already asleep. She still tries to deflect the conversation, and calling him names. But eventually they do talk it out, and they finally let out their feelings, being honest with each other. Toph says that they're too different to actually work, being blunt and cynical as always, telling him that he couldn't even stay married to his dream girl so why would they ever last. And Aang, ever the optimist, tells her that while there is no guarantee for the future, that he knows how he feels, and that it isn't the same childlike love he felt for Katara, that was too much, too soon, too idealistic and coddling and way too much like familial love and most of all just not what either of them needed. That their differences are what makes him believe they can work, because he feels free to get angry around her and he's not scared when she gets angry at him, he doesn't like it exactly but he knows it's because she cares. That she’s honest with him, and that he’s never kept anything from her. That despite not being the most emotional person, she’s the one he goes to when he’s feeling down, not because she fixes him, but because she is there for him and knows he doesn’t need encouraging words, but just someone to listen. He lists every reason why he loves her. Eventually, even Toph can't keep listing reasons why they're bad for each other, she knows realistically that they not. That they're actually a perfect match. So instead of arguing she kisses him, and he spends the night.
Nothing really changes, their routine is the same. Only that when he comes over to the Beifong residence he doesn't leave after dark, he stays the night and the next day he makes breakfast. And when the Beifongs join him and the kids at Air Temple Island, she stays in his bedroom instead of one of the guest bedrooms. They both let Katara know immediately, and she is delighted. She forces them to have a double date with her and Azula about a week after they start dating and only after do they realize that now, for the rest of their lives they have to live with the knowledge that Azula was at their first date, and it wasn't awful (double dates with Azula and Katara become an almost monthly thing after that). For some reason, I think reformed Azula, along with redirecting her energy into planning events (she's totally the event planner of the century) also redirects it into being a huge gossip, so within two more weeks all their other friends are informed of the new relationship.
They decide to tell all the kids after about seven or eight months, not wanting to rush anything and not seeing any reason for it either. They decide to break the news during Sunday lunch at Air Temple Island. Once they do, Lin is unimpressed saying she already knew, Bumi suspected but he's really happy for both of them, especially because he loves Toph already and always has, since she's family either way, Kya is completely shocked but happy regardless, Suyin doesn't really understand anything going on but Tenzin just flips and walks off. It's been a while since his parents got divorced but he's still young and he's hurt that someone he considers family is 'coming between his parents'.
Aang tries to talk to him but he won't even open the door. His siblings try as well, taking some time off of teasing him to try to talk to him but he won't budge. So, Toph volunteers to give it a shot. Aang is reluctant, knowing how blunt Toph can be and not being sure if that's the best idea but she convinces him. Surprisingly, she actually manages to break through to him a little. Not enough he's magically okay with it all, but enough he comes out of his bedroom and has dinner with everyone.
Toph won't tell Aang what she said or what Tenzin said, and neither will Tenzin. But, she does tell him that he and Katara should look into a therapist for him so he can actually start working through all his stuff, as clearly time alone hasn't helped.
Things aren't perfect, Toph and Aang argue and bicker a lot. About pretty much anything they could argue about; grocery shopping, work, spending more time with the kids, giving the kids more rules, being more affectionate with the kids, not coddling the kids so much, where they're going to live full time, if they're going to travel together or not, just, a lot of things. That’s just how communication and relationships work. Katara does get involved a lot in the fights about the kids, not only the ones about hers with Aang's but in the ones about Toph's girls as well, because Katara wouldn't let Toph be such a relaxed parent as she was in LoK, but let's be honest neither would Aang.
Azula moves in with Katara after Tenzin starts actually dealing with his feelings about the divorce, which helps him to finally start accepting the changes to his family, slowly, but he’s trying his best and he's getting there. And him and Azula start getting along better, she always tells off his siblings when they bother him, she likes reading books with him and she teaches him how to cheat in Pai Sho to beat Bumi. She also makes surprisingly good brownies which everyone loves (and when Sokka comes to visit he always asks if she poisoned them before eating them). She gets along great with Bumi because he loves hearing stories about her adventures and she always helps him with school. And Kya just adores her because she teaches her how to act like a princess. Azula is actually a really good step mom to all the kids, and it really warms Katara's heart to see them all getting along and playing board games, playing with dolls, reading, baking together, or in one particular instance plotting revenge against some girl who pushed Kya (which she had to intervene, but she thought it was cute nonetheless).
Toph herself is also a great sort of step mom, having already known the kids all their life and being their favorite ‘Aunt’, the only real change was she got to spend more time with them and further along she had to help educate them (which she hated doing). They all love her and think she’s the coolest because come on, she’s Toph. Tenzin still has trouble with her dating his dad, but just like with Azula it gets better after a while. It certainly helps that she teaches him and Lin how to prank his siblings. Kya especially loves having step sisters, even if Lin won’t let her play with her hair or do her make up. And Bumi always wants to know what cases she’s working on. Aang as a step dad is basically the same as he is as a dad after the divorce, Lin always loved him because he was incredibly fun to be around, and as a step dad who’s trying his best to be a good dad he’s always there for her even if she just wants someone to play with because Tenzin is at Katara’s and she’s bored. Su takes to him like a moth to a flame, being so young she loves playing dolls with him and being carried in his shoulders.
Toph and Aang (officially) move in together two months after Katara and Azula. They decide to live in Republic City during the week and go to Air Temple Island on the weekends since it's easier considering their jobs and the kids' school. Since Suyin was so young when they started dating, shortly after they start living together she starts calling Aang daddy. The first time it happened Toph didn't even realize it, since Aang wasn't even around and Kya had said it, so she just deduced she was parroting the older girl. The second time it happened with Aang, he had finished reading her a bedtime story and told her goodnight when she said 'goodnight daddy'. He assumed they were both just tired and it meant nothing but he couldn't help but feel extremely happy at the thought that that's what Su saw him as (because if you don't love your partners' children as your own then idk what to tell you), he decided against telling Toph though, thinking it was most likely a fluke and she'd be back to calling him Aang or her preferred nickname for him 'Toes'. The third time it happened Toph freaked out, she had just picked up Su from her school when the little girl told her 'I have a present for you and daddy'. Of course, she didn't let it show and just followed along with Su's conversation, but inside she was completely losing it worrying about what Aang was going to do if she said that in front of him. She didn't have much more time to worry about it or even tell him, because as soon as he got home she called him over with that very moniker. They both just went along with it, both knowing the other was tense and stressed and not knowing what to do about it. Toph was stressed about Aang's reaction, and Aang was stressed about Toph's reaction, but neither of them minded, if anything it filled their hearts with happiness. At night they talk about it and both realize with relief that they're both actually thrilled about it.
Not even a week after, the whole Gaang meets, Katara and Azula already knowing about the whole ordeal. Not even five minutes pass before Azula tells everyone else and Katara's already chastising her.
Azula and Toph become unlikely friends and give each other heads ups when one of the kids is in a particularly bad mood, and they just bond over being step moms and their conflicting relationships with their respective parents (Azula and her mom still have a very rocky relationship though it does improve more and more with time, especially after Ursa sees how good Azula is with the kids, in her own way. And Toph is getting along with her parents better, but I just can't see them being very content with her having children out of wedlock, being high society and all so they're also still working out a lot of things).
Aang still travels for work, but he tries his best to leave his long trips for summer, unless they are emergencies, that way he can take the family in a bit of a family trip even if he still has to work some. During the summer he and Katara make a schedule, letting him have the kids for the first month and a half while he goes in Avatar and/or diplomatic missions, at the end of which they will meet in Ember Island where she will he staying with Azula, Aang and Toph and the girls stay there for two weeks with the whole family, actually vacationing for once. Zuko, Mai and Sokka and Suki also make an appearance with their own kids during the last week Aang and Toph are staying and it is an absolute mess but also a blast. During the trip Toph suspects she's pregnant and doesn't know how to tell Aang, and is worried that the kids aren't going to be too receptive of the information.
She tells Katara first, as soon as she is in Ember Island and she is able to confirm Toph's suspicions. She tries to comfort her and tell her that it's all going to be fine and that Aang and the children are going to be ecstatic, but Toph isn't so sure. She knows Aang will probably be happy, but she's mostly worried about Tenzin and Su's reactions. That night she tells Aang and he's over the moon. They decide to tell all their friends before telling the kids, or Azula, knowing how she can be, so they wait one week for everyone to get there.
Zuko and Sokka tease Aang endlessly (like they did when they first found out they were dating), Mai and Suki are very happy for the couple and Azula claims her 'rightful role' as the child's godmother (which scares Aang a little but just makes Toph laugh). After getting that out of the way they tell all their kids together, and are pleasantly surprised to find out that even Tenzin is excited for a sibling, saying he wishes it's an Airbender like him. Kya just wants it to be another girl, Bumi wants it to be another boy claiming there are too many girls in the family and that the 'men' are outnumbered, Lin is sure it's going to be a girl and that she's going to be an Earthbender too, and Su just wants a baby sister to play with.
That's as far as my idea got, I may get more later but so far I'm not sure if I want the baby to be a girl or a boy, an Airbender or a non-bender or and Earthbender. Just, no clue. But I do know that a while after the baby is born Azula and Katara adopt a 3 year-old Firebender, both of them loving being parents and wanting one more kid (though I feel they could also later become foster parents because Katara definitely has the right gentleness to be a foster mother, and they both just care about these kids in bad homes so much). I really fell in love with this idea what can I say, I could actually go on and on until everyone in the Gaang is a grandparent but I'll just leave it here to (maybe) continue later.

Zuko X Fem!Reader
Warnings: Fluff, Slight Aangst(heh), and some implications
Word Count: 4k
Summary: Iroh felt it was time for the Palace to reflect the time of Peace and Love that Zuko promised five years earlier at his coronation. He takes it upon himself to hire an interior decorator to help his nephew out and work together. What he didn’t expect was for Zuko to possibly find his own peace and love in the process.
Chapter 4: Trompe l’oeil >> Epilogue
Tumblr media
"When the world is at odds and the mind is at sea, then cease the useless tedium, and brew a cup of tea," a familiar voice whispered behind her, breaking her from her thoughts as she stared at the mural on the wall of the shop. Turning to him, she smiled and accepted the cup of tea he held out for her. He winked at her before turning to examine everything else going on around them. Following his lead, she watched the people within the shop mingle and enjoy their tea.
The grand opening of the Jasmine Dragon Fire Nation location was in full swing. After Iroh had bought the property in the middle ring of the nation, he hired (Y/N) on to decorate the place from top to bottom. It had taken a couple weeks as there was some structural and code issues.
Now the establishment was a beautiful, grand tea shop with hand painted murals of dragons, intricately carved out pillars, quaint seating, and the smell of tea filling every corner.
"Where do you get this stuff, Iroh?" She giggled after taking a sip of her tea. Iroh smiled to himself as he stared at his customers seemingly enjoying themselves in the brand new store.
"All old people know the perfect proverb or sentiment to say," he teased, "it comes with the age." (Y/N) let out a hearty laugh and nodded her head, accepting his claim. "This place looks wonderful, dear," the general complimented. "Your hard work has definitely paid off."
(Y/N) blushed and took another drink of tea to hide the warmth on her face. "It's your hard work General Iroh, the Fire Nation has come along way thanks to you and the Fire Lord, you both deserve success." It was Iroh's turn to blush, now.
"Speaking of my nephew, I thought he would be here with you?"
It had been exactly a year since Zuko and (Y/N) had stopped being idiots and had gotten together. They spent as much free time as they could with each other. Dinners were often spent in the garden, which the turtle ducks enjoyed due to getting spare bread chunks. Days off from the throne and decorating were usually done walking through the city in street clothes enjoying the public and the lack of advisors and guards breathing down their necks. Some holidays were spent visiting his friends in their Nations, getting to know them. After their first meeting, which was simultaneously a mess and a success, (Y/N) couldn't get enough of the GAang and insisted to always be around whenever they visited or Zuko went to visit them.
The easiest of the four to get along with was Aang, obviously since he was kind to everyone, followed by Toph who appreciated her blunt comments, closely behind was Sokka who enjoyed playing pranks on the rest with her and her sarcastic comments, but the hardest to break was Katara. Katara was protective of Zuko and she didn't want anyone to try and take advantage of the Fire Lord.
It took (Y/N) four months to convince Katara that she wasn't with Zuko for the fame and status. It had been a process but she came out victorious when Katara began sending her letters often and ended up being her closest friend of the group.
They would all tell her how apparent it was that Zuko loved her. The way he would look at her, talk about her, or even how he'd be around her.
The two had grown together over the last year.
(Y/N) learned that Zuko needed care and words of affirmation to reassure him that she was still there for him. He enjoyed cuddling and affection, which was something that was apparently new to him according to the group, as he wasn't much like that with Mai other than a few kisses here and there. Learning what kind of day he was having just based off of the way his eyes were set or how his shoulders felt, sometimes how he kissed her said it all. It was the rough days that she knew he needed extra care and she'd try to make him laugh, or show him extra attention.
Zuko discovered quickly that (Y/N) was very easy going. She went with the flow on his busy schedule, never complaining about not being able to see each other and she was always there for him whenever he needed it. Her strong attitude and demeanor to get everything done thoroughly and thoughtfully, while also compassionately was exactly what he wanted in a future Fire Lady. She still cared a lot what people thought of her, definitely having a people pleaser attitude, he figured came with the job of working with interior décor, but she had been working on it a lot since the start of their relationship, especially after the rumors grew about her possibly getting the Palace job to sleep with the Fire Lord. The rumors had been shut down quickly, especially after the people began to see how desperately in love with (Y/N), Zuko was. Soon enough, the people of the Fire Nation adored her and Zuko couldn't have been happier about it.
Now, after a year, they couldn't image their lives any other way. Zuko was finishing up big projects with Aang on making the world peaceful, and (Y/N) had several clients, including General Iroh, who were eager for her to work her magic on their interiors.
(Y/N) was definitely in a wonderful place in her life, and she couldn't help but smile and think about the man who she loved so much, causing Iroh to grin in return at the look on her face.
"He's in a council meeting, apparently he had some business with them that just couldn't wait," she teased, "he said he'd be here after."
"Knowing my nephew, it must be important, he'd come up with any reason not to meet with the Sages," Iroh chuckled. "I'm going to brew some more tea, take care of yourself dear." He said before making his way to the back.
The party was packed, people from all over the nation came to see the notorious General Iroh's brand new tea shop in the Fire Nation. She'd seen several familiar faces and some new ones. It was nice to watch as people admired her decor and the hard work she had put into making the perfect place for Iroh.
At one point, a woman walked up to her, with an apparent nervous look on her face, "Excuse me? Are you the Palace decorator?" The woman asked, causing (Y/N) to internally roll her eyes. T
hat was a new title Iroh and Zuko came up with to tease her. It had caught on quickly that Zuko had begun dating the Palace decorator and that was officially her title to anyone who wasn't in on the joke. While it helped with the business, it definitely annoyed her to think that people only wanted her because she had the official title.
"I did decorate the Palace, yes," she responded the same as she did for everyone who asked her.
"You did this place too, correct?" The woman said, gesturing to the tea shop. "As well as Captain Yuzai's home?"
"Yes, I did both," (Y/N) beamed proudly.
"I was wondering, I have a home in Ba Sing Se that just does not feel comfortable to me, would we be able to discuss the possibility of you going out there and updating it for me?"
"Absolutely! I have another possible job in Ba Sing Se, so to do both at the same time would be simple enough!" The woman grinned in return before giving her, her address in the Fire Nation and setting up a meeting next week.
Watching the woman walk away, (Y/N) couldn't help but smile before she gasping as someone covered her eyes with their hands.
"You look beautiful tonight," he whispered in her ear before moving his hands away. Turning to look at the Fire Lord, (Y/N) blushed. "I'm sorry I'm late. I hope Uncle doesn't hate me too much." She shook her head with a giggle.
"You know he could never hate you!" She chastised before standing up and pressing her lips to his scar affectionately. "I'm glad you're here. How was your meeting?" Zuko's body tensed. "That bad, huh?"
He brushed a strand of (Y/H/C) from her face and shook his head, "it was good, we got everything done, properly. I don't want to talk about some boring old men though, I'd much rather you and I smile a bit, mingle and then go back to the Palace and have a proper dinner." His lips pressed to hers, immediately warming her body with his affection.
"Mmm... I'm not sure" she pulled back slightly and smiled, "I'm having so much fun here. I've been getting new job offers and I think I heard Iroh brought ice cream from the Water Tribe," she teased. "You'll have to do some real convincing to get me to go back with you."
Zuko chuckled, "if you come back with me, I can convince you much more thoroughly" his voice low and raspy. (Y/N)'s cheeks burned and she looked down at the cup in her hand, attempting to gain control of her brain and her body. "Plus, I have a present for you." Her attention whipped right to him and she frowned, her brows furrowed deeply and her lip pouted out just barely.
"No! We promise we weren't going to do presents! I thought we agreed to wait until you were on your leave and go to Ember Island and that would be our present to each other!" Zuko rested his hand on her elbow and shook his head.
"It's not that kind of present, just trust me," he whispered, attempting to reassure her. "We're still going to Ember Island in the summer. Just you and me." He pecked her nose gently. She let out a breath and nodded her head. The one thing she could do was trust him. "I love you," he whispered before pressing his lips gently to her forehead, "Now let's go mingle so I can take you back to the palace, the turtle ducks are hungry." He teased making (Y/N) let out a giggle.
"We’d be horrible parents if we left those poor dears starving," she winked before following him toward a group of people to talk with.
People fawned over Zuko, like they always did, and he accepted it with such humility. Instead of allowing people to talk about him and his accomplishments as a young Fire Lord, he would turn the discussion on others, asking them about their businesses, their family, aspirations in life, all of it. He didn't just nod his head and deafly listen, instead he would ask questions about their answers, or follow up with a story of his own to relate, letting them know he was thoroughly listening to them. He was a caring Fire Lord and (Y/N) couldn't help but fall in love with him more and more. Zuko was a natural at being the lead of the Nation and she knew it had a lot to do with his past and what shaped him into the man he was today, the wonderful, compassionate, handsome man.
"So Fire Lord Zuko," one of the elderly woman interrupted a conversation about farming in the outer parts of the Fire Nation, "it has been almost a year hasn't it?" She asked, gesturing to (Y/N) and him. "Any thoughts about the future? You know those single women are getting restless about if this is serious or not." The woman winked and (Y/N)'s body stilled. She couldn't believe this woman was implying that their relationship wasn't serious. Zuko, seemed a bit taken aback by her question as well, clearing his throat several times.
"I'm not sure what that means, Ume," Zuko responded diplomatically, "I can assure you though, I will not be getting rid of Miss (Y/N) here, anytime soon," he wrapped his arm around her waist and tugged her closer, producing a blush onto her cheeks.
"Ah, young love," Ume fawned, "I'll have to tell my granddaughter that there's no chance then," she playfully pouted before turning her attention to the other ladies who were gushing over Zuko's declaration.
With the distraction, Zuko leaned toward (Y/N) pressing his lips to her ear, "let's find Uncle and then get out of here." She nodded desperately and allowed him to lead her toward the back of the shop, where Iroh was talking with one of his workers with delight.
"The earnings tonight will carry us into next month and we'll make a large profit in no time! Your hard work has been greatly appreciated, Iruna," Iroh complimented, "you can leave for the night, go enjoy your evening with your family." The woman bowed gratefully and rushed out the door before Iroh could change his mind. When the General caught Zuko's form in the corner of his eye, his smile grew, brightly. "Fire Lord Zuko!" He wrapped his nephew into a deep hug. When they released Zuko returned his arm to (Y/N)'s waist. "How did your meeting with the council go? Did you get their approval?" Zuko nodded his head and his Uncle grinned. "Wonderful! The future of the Fire Nation is looking bright!"
"Uncle, we were just coming over to give our congratulations. I'm going to go take (Y/N) to dinner at the Palace, if you don't mind." Iroh shook his head and began shooing them toward the door.
"Go enjoy your evening. One year together is a great feat for anyone, celebrate!"
With quick goodbyes and hugs, (Y/N) and Zuko made their way to the Palace. It was a nice evening out and neither complained about walking side by side back.
"I can't believe it's been a year," Zuko said after a few minutes of silence. "It feels like it's been a couple of weeks," he confessed. "I know I've been busy, but I feel like everything in the Palace is still so new since you changed it up. I'm still finding small details you've added, like the dragon carvings inside my wardrobe, or the flames painted inside of the sconces." (Y/N) smiled at her boyfriend.
"Good, that means I've done my job properly, each day should feel like a fresh one inside of your home." Zuko chuckled and pulled her closer as they walked. "I can't believe it's been a year either. So much has happened in such a little time. We went from client, decorator, to fighting the council on if I was a proper courtship for you, to dealing with the public about my true intentions, to meeting your friends, becoming friends with your friends, and now we're at a year." She reminisced. They had definitely hurdled over many obstacles in their relationship, but nothing stopped them from being together. There was never a doubt over their feelings for each other.
"I'm interested to see what our future looks like," Zuko's voice was soft. (Y/N) nodded and they returned to their comfortable silence as they walked toward the Palace.
When they arrived, Zuko had everything already prepared. Dinner in the garden was a sweet little picnic full of food. It was their favorite foods and desserts piled onto a maroon blanket placed nicely next to the pond. (Y/N) was ecstatic at the site and leaned over to her boyfriend, pecking him on the cheek affectionately before grabbing his hand and walking with him toward the spot.
After their dinner outside in their garden, (Y/N) was kneeled next to the pond, playing with the turtle ducks while Zuko walked around. She didn't say anything, but he seemed to be on edge after the food and she wondered if maybe something hadn't sat right with him. To help ease his tension, she tried humming a bit, pretending it was for the turtle ducks, when in fact, she knew he enjoyed her tunes as well. He had said it reminded him of his mother the first time he caught her doing it.
Zuko turned to look at her, while her attention was on the duck, he couldn't believe he was lucky enough to have been with such an amazing and beautiful woman. While he was annoyed at the question Ume had asked during the tea shop's opening, he was also grateful because it gave him a chance to set the boundary that (Y/N) wasn't going anywhere. He was in love with her.
"General Iroh's shop looked wonderful," he complimented her softly as he walked behind her, leaning against the tree that hung over the pond. She looked up at him and grinned before turning her focus back to the pond.
"Thank you, I'm glad you think so, I really hope people enjoy it and it helps Iroh's business out."
"People weren't able to keep their eyes off of the décor, (Y/N)," Zuko said, trying to let her know that she didn't have to be modest.
"I guess that's true…I did have a woman come up and ask me to take a job with her in Ba Sing Se, I already have a job there next month with that Nobleman's wife, I'm sure getting both done at once would be great." Her voice proud as she discussed her business, another thing Zuko couldn't help but adore about her. "However," her tone turned playful, "I could do without the 'Palace Decorator' silliness I keep hearing," she teased.
"That's what you are," he joked back, "no one else on this planet will ever be allowed to touch the Palace while I'm Fire Lord, I might as well let everyone know that now," he poked fun, "though, if you don't like that title…" he began, reaching into his pocket while she was still looking into the pond, "I'm sure a promotion is in order." He pulled out the object he had been carrying around all night, holding it just perfectly that the light glinted onto the golden surface.
Not seeing this action, (Y/N) snorted out a laugh, "A promotion? Oh come on Zuko, there's not much else I can get promoted to," she turned to look at him as she spoke, "other than the--" that's when her eyes caught the object in his hands and all words escaped her. Her mouth formed into an O, all amusement washed away.
"Fire Lady?" He asked, attempting to keep his voice level as he held up the royal headpiece typically worn by the Fire Lady.
(Y/N)'s eyes darted between Zuko and the crown, attempting to decipher if he was joking or not.
"Zuko, you can't be serious…" her voice low and filled with uncertainty as she spoke her thoughts out loud. He couldn't actually be implying this.
"Dead serious," he said, taking a step toward her, still holding the piece in his hand as he did. "I want to spend every day with you, go back to our room after a long day and relax with you, redecorate the Palace every single year with you, make fun of the Sages with you, dance every night with you,, all of it...with you." He whispered. "There's nothing I've been more sure of in my entire life. Which isn't saying much, since it's been filled with more than enough uncertainty, but you…" he finally reached her, "are the only certainty I've ever known."
"Me? Fire Lady?" She looked down at his chest, unable to focus on his molten eyes or the crown in his hand. "I…" All logic escaped her forcing her to dig through her mind and figure out a reason behind all of this. "The Sages, they'll never agree to it."
"They already did, this afternoon," his tone calm and collected. He knew this was a shock to her, it was a shock to him, but he had known that he wanted this since the first time she smiled at him and giggled.
"That's what your meeting was about?" Her eyes darted up to him, surprised at this revelation. It wasn't some meeting about the nation, it was to get their approval on her being Fire Lady. Then Iroh's words rang in her head.
Knowing my nephew, it must be important, he'd come up with any reason not to meet with the Sages.
How did your meeting with the council go? Did you get their approval?
The future of the Fire Nation is looking bright.
Iroh knew.
"(Y/N), am I just going to hold this thing all night, or are you going to say yes?" Zuko teased as he watched her try to reason through everything in her mind.
She took a deep breath and looked up at him. There wasn't a doubt in her mind that she loved this man more than anything in the world and here he was before her, asking her to spend the rest of his life with her. It was everything she had ever hoped, but still somehow felt like such a dream.
"You didn't ask me," she smiled up at him, her tone completely void of panic now.
"(Y/N), my love, my Palace decorator," he winked causing her to giggle, "marry me. Become the Fire Lady that this nation, this world, needs, the Fire Lady I need." Resting his forehead against hers, he smiled.
"Yes," she whispered and immediately his lips slanted over hers, pulling her into an intense kiss. After a few moments, they separated slightly, catching their breaths, when he placed the crown into the half topknot she had luckily decided to wear that day.
"I love you," he purred into her ear, before placing a chaste kiss on her temple.
"I love you too Fire Lord Zuko," she giggled, wrapping her arms around his neck.
"Fire Lord Zuko and Fire Lady (Y/N)," his goofy grin plastered across his face, "I like the sound of that." Before she could respond, Zuko captured her lips with his again.
(Y/N) couldn't help but think back to what Zuko had said earlier that night:
I'm interested to see what our future looks like.
She couldn't agree more.

this is the first zukka fic i ever started! i remember writing the outline in my careers class and having to use code names for Zuko and Sokka bc i knew one of the girls in my class watched atla and i didn’t want her to know i was writing fanfiction lmao - anyway i don’t think i’m ever actually gonna finish it so i figured i’d post it at it’s wip stage
Later, when Katara fusses over the duck patterned band-aids on his face, he’ll blame the sun for being in his eyes and be glad that his skin tone hides his blush.
And, technically the sun was involved so he wasn’t even completely lying.
---
When he was heading home from Suki’s, Sokka usually took the shortcut through the alley so he could make it in time for dinner. But, the alley was closed for some reason when he’d gotten there which meant he had to go the long way around.
The detour took him down Bosco Street, which was made up of cafes and clothing stores, with the trees painting a dappled shadow across the pavement. It was soothing, the rippling sunlight and the rumble of wheels against the cement, occasional shoppers offering a polite smile as he rode past.
He and the Gaang used to walk down there most weekends, shopping and getting lunch from whichever cafe caught their attention that day, until they all got busy with their last few years of high school.
They’d caused a lot of chaos when they were younger and less aware of what was around them, but Sokka could confidently say that that afternoon was the first time he’d eaten shit in the middle of the pavement.
He looked up just as he reached the Jasmine Dragon, a tea shop that had opened a few months ago with beautiful windows that took up most of the store front and looked out onto the street.
Light from the lowering sun streamed directly through those windows, landing on probably the most beautiful person he’d seen since Yue.
It was one of the servers, his short hair barely held out of his face in an uneven pony tail, strands falling over his forehead and glowing white in the afternoon sun. From what Sokka could see of it as he rolled past, it was a very nice face with a square jaw and a rounded nose.
He was bent slightly at the waist, carefully pouring steaming tea into a cup as an older woman smile and spoke, hand waving around dramatically. The boys’ pale skin was flushed from the steam, black hair falling into his eyes as he straightened and slender fingers moving to tuck it behind his ear before he looked up and met Sokka’s eyes.
Sokka, who was too busy staring at the pretty tea server to watch where he was skating.
He felt the wheel jam into something he hadn’t seen in his distracted state, the board disappearing from under his feet as he lurched forward. In an effort not to break his face, he tried to roll so he’d land on his shoulder and half succeeded, a sharp burst of pain sinking into his skin where he scraped his jaw.
He lay there for a moment, wallowing in his own brief misery, before pushing himself up to assess the damage. He’d skinned one of his knees through his jeans (his Gran Gran was going to kill him) along with both palms and apparently his face if the stinging was anything to go by. His skateboard was still rolling away from him, the wheels clattering cheerfully over the pavement.
And he’d done it all in front of a cute boy.
He groaned, silently asking the spirits to make him an earthbender so he could get the earth to swallow him whole.
-
whats supposed to happen after this
Zuko sees Sokka just fuckin stack it outside of his uncles tea shop and he’s like D:
So he goes outside to see if he’s okay and he’s like “wow you’re pretty shit at skating dude” and Sokka’s like “D:< it’s your fault!!” while he grabs his skateboard
and then Zuko takes him to the back room and, like, gives him some sub-par first aid while calling him an idiot (insert that tiktok audio that’s like “im sorry i called you a fucking idiot, i was trying to flirt”)
and Sokka’s like “wow you’re pretty shit at giving first aid”
and then they both kinda stare at eachother before laughing and then they’re all soft eyed and moony over each other
and then Katara texts like “yo where are you?” and Sokka’s like “): i have to go”
somehow he gets Zuko’s number before grabbing his skateboard and zooming home

A:tLA Re-Watch: Fine-Toothed Comb Edition
Well, not quite on the long weekend, but here’s the recap anyway.
Book 1, Chapter 6 - Imprisoned
(0:55) Previously, on Avatar, the Water Tribes know what it’s like to be stuck at the ass end of the world slowly dying, but Katara’s hope is actually inspiring and she and Sokka found the Avatar for a reason. It’s going to be a Katara-centric episode. The group is still heading to the North Pole, while Zuko continues chasing them.
(1:45) We’re out of the snow! It’s still winter (seeing as the next episode is titled ‘The Winter Solstice’), but yeah. No snow. At the very least, this area’s warm enough that snow isn’t an all-winter condition.
(2:02) This is what I mean by the show bringing up supplies when they’re an issue. Note that Sokka doesn’t actually know what any of these nuts are. He hasn’t spent enough time in the Earth Kingdom to know what’s edible.
(2:48) The character contrast in two nutshells. Aang and Katara run towards the loud booming noises in the forest, Sokka advises hanging back (but goes with the majority). Then, when they find Haru, Aang and Katara want to make friends, but Sokka says he looks dangerous so they should be cautious. It’s a joke, mostly at Sokka’s expense, but it’s also consistent characterisation that helps give Sokka an important role in the team even when he’s outshone by ridiculous amounts in the direct combat department. He thinks very differently in some ways to his sister and his friends. This is sometimes unhelpful and sometimes downright necessary for the characters collectively to succeed. Today is an unhelpful day.
(2:56) Upon seeing Katara, the practicing earthbender drops everything and runs, going so far as to block pursuit. No questions, no chances, just immediate flight. Weird reaction, hey?
(3:06) Aang says that Haru must be running somewhere. Like a village. Which should have a market. Like I said back in episode one, every main character is smart. Showing it in these tiny, low-stakes, incidental conversations makes it believeable when they do big, dramatic smart things.
(3:21) Pan over this Earth Kingdom village. It’s pretty different to Kyoshi Island, and honestly looks a fair bit more prosperous. Earthbending means this village has got a very neat-looking mine and that building a wall around town isn’t a big deal. Interestingly, most building here are made of wood, or at least significantly involve wood in their construction (lintels, structural beams, doors, floors, I think even the rooftops).
(3:40) We get Haru’s name here as Katara spots him and follows him into his mother’s store.
(3:55) As soon as Aang says ‘earthbending’, Haru’s mother slams the doors and windows closed. Until now, the gAang has only travelled in free territory. Scared, paranoid territory, but free territory. This episode is a quick and brutal look at life in an occupied Earth Kingdom village. There’s a lot of fear here.
(4:09) Right on cue, Fire Nation soldiers drop by. The taxes they’re collecting are extortionate and their schedule for payment is arbitrary. The occupying force is taking financially and using this as a terror tactic. This becomes more explicit as the soldier says “we wouldn’t want an accident, would we?” and creates a fireball in his hands.
(4:58) Love the worldbuilding on this show. Why’s the Fire Nation here? Sokka asks, and Haru’s mother has an answer. Turns out all those coal-fired ships the Fire Nation uses? They need coal. The village is being exploited for its natural resources, too.
(5:09) Katara asks why Haru doesn’t help fight back, as he so clearly wants to. Especially since it means not bending, which she says is part of who she is. Haru’s mother explains that Haru would be arrested and taken from the village for earthbending (hold on to the information that the walls and mine are clearly products of earthbending), just like Haru’s father was. So let’s add some deeply personal and cultural oppression to the list of things going on here.
It’s also a tough lesson that resisting the Fire Nation in places like this isn’t as simple as saying “fight back.” There are serious risks involved.
(5:43) More panning over Earth Kingdom scenery. Vegetable patches and a silo can be seen. Little visual touches to remind the viewer that these background characters were in this place before the story arrived there, and will continue on offscreen once the story leaves. It helps make the world feel real.
(6:08) Katara and Haru go off and bond. Katara apologises for accidentally bringing up any hurt related to Haru’s father, ‘cause she’s a good, considerate person.
(6:18) Haru tells Katara how brave his father was to resist the Fire Nation invasion, against what odds. After which Haru’s father was taken away, and his family haven’t seen him since. The only way Haru can feel close to his father is by practicing earthbending, which also puts him in danger.
The entire backstory here gets into the big issues - invasion, mass internment, cultural oppression - by linking it with the much smaller slice of life. Just Haru, missing his father.
(6:48) Katara gives the exposition on her necklace, the last memento she has of her mother. The conversation leaves off pretty brutally as well. “It’s not enough, is it?” “No.” And that’s it. There’s only acknowledgement of their mutual pains, not closure. There’s not enough. There’s a hole there that cannot be filled.
(7:05) As Katara and Haru head back, they pass the mine collapsing. What happens when an earthbender-produced mine has to operate without earthbenders? It seems very likely to me that earthbending is a major part of mining safety and maintenance in Avatar world, and the removal of earthbenders from town would logically result in more mine collapses and accidents.
(7:32) Haru bravely earthbends to rescue the old man from the mine collapse.
(7:59) One of the really nice things about Aang? He’s impressed by Katara’s accomplishments, even one as small as inspiring Haru to his own little rebellion.
(8:12) Sokka brings up that point from back in 1.04 that if they hang around a village (especially an occupied village) they’re going to be in trouble. They have to keep moving. Continuity! Learning the lessons of previous episodes!
(8:41) Fire Nation soldiers show up in the dead of night to arrest Haru for earthbending, on the information of the old Earth Kingdom man Haru saved. Informants and midnight arrests - it’s a freaking scary depiction of life under occupation. Not to mention the moral texture it brings to the series. The Fire Nation is inarguably wrong and oppressive. But that doesn’t make the people of the Earth Kingdom saints. Individuals have a range of responses to the Fire Nation, and here we see it’s up to and including willing collaboration with their oppressors. We’re never going to see this old man again. He never gets any on-screen comeuppance. He never gets told he was wrong. This is just a lesson for the main characters.
The show’s worked up to this idea, with the hostility of the Kyoshi Islanders and Bumi placing the gAang under arrest. Now it’s serious. The characters can’t assume that Earth Kingdom people will be on their side.
And this ultimately leads up to the point that this conflict isn’t about one nation being inherently bad and the others being inherently good.
(8:56) Love to see some mundane uses of bending - in this case, Katara doesn’t bother actually pumping water, she just yanks it out of the pump.
(9:23) And a nice thing about Sokka - when he sees Katara is upset, he moves to comfort her physically. However, also notice what Sokka actually says. Part of his idea of comforting Katara is working on solutions to the external problem, working out what happened and what they might be able to do about it. It’s very pragmatic and not very touchy-feely. While it comes with the best of intentions, and Katara doesn’t even have to ask for Sokka’s support and assistance, you can see where Katara might want a friend who’s a little more emotionally supportive. Different people fill different roles.
(9:31) But on to the main event! Katara’s got a plan to break Haru out of Fire Nation prison. Thus far Katara’s been strong and capable, and particularly impressive in how she’s dealt with a grief-stricken Aang. This marks her first opportunity to take up the foremost heroic role in an episode. She’s making the plans, she’s driving the action, she’s saving the day. It starts with her getting arrested for earthbending.
(9:49) A team plan! Katara had the basic idea of using airbending to simulate earthbending, but it looks to me like Sokka did the actual engineering of finding the vents that connect, while Aang’s going to be doing the actual bending. This is also a classic example of how Sokka’s character development is going to go over the course of the series and the reason he’s such an important part of the team. He puts the details into the big ideas.
(9:55) And here’s Aang’s fun-loving, lighthearted nature shown as a flaw rather than a virtue (in a fairly comedic, low-ish stakes kind of way) before the serious long-term implications become most apparent in season three. He’s goofing off and not taking responsibility for his part in this plan. Later, when Aang doesn’t want to find a firebending teacher and doesn’t want to think about how he’s planning to deal with Ozai, that’s perfectly believeable. We’ve seen him skip out on small details, so we can believe Aang would skip out on the big ones.
Furthermore, in character and plot terms, the character trait that’s a minor hiccup in the plan this episode causes serious problems later, and yet remains an important strength in other episodes (and across those episodes in how Aang actually keeps moving forward). There’s nuance there in Aang’s character, and nuance in the plots that recognise that things aren’t usually as simple as ‘this character trait good, that character trait bad’.
(10:18) This entire scene gives me the giggles so bad, starting with this Fire Nation soldier’s bemused reaction. Earthbending style.
(11:17) The group exchanges a bunch of anxious looks. Despite the comic nature of the faked fight, they did just arrange for Katara to get arrested by the Fire Nation and hauled off to a prison for dissidents. This is serious stuff.
(11:30) Cut to a port, and Katara on a boat. Nobody seems surprised that the prison is offshore.
(12:15) Cameo from George Takei here, hamming it up.
(12:41) The faux affability of the welcoming is shown by the Warden’s willingness to use fire on a prisoner when the prisoner simply coughs. Followed by condemning the man to a week of solitary imprisonment. Also worth noting that the Warden is completely unfazed by the presence of a young teenager amongst the prisoners.
(13:05) The Warden helpfully points out that the rig is made entirely of metal, which earthbenders cannot affect with their powers. (At this point in the series.) It brings a pretty significant limitation of earthbending to the table in a series set just as their world’s industrial revolution is going global.
It’s also a good indication of how hard imprisoning a bender is. This rig must be absolutely brutal to live on, for the guards as well as the prisoners. It couldn’t have been cheap to build, either. I’ll come back to the topic of criminal justice and bending ability later in the series, but for now just keep in mind that prison for benders a) requires cruel conditions and b) is logistically burdensome to say the least.
(13:16) The Warden also describes earthbending as ‘brutish savagery’, so here’s some fire supremacy for you all! Again, the big thing - the Fire Nation taking over the world and thinking that’s okay - is reflected in the little thing, a Fire Nation character casually dismisssing any worth in earthbending (when we just a few minutes ago heard Haru speak about how important it was to his family bonds).
(13:47) Katara looks over the prisoners and sees a lot of people in absolute despair. Keep an eye out for female prisoners. I keep raising this background detail thing because it tells you how the writers and animators are thinking about the “normal” state of the world.
(13:52) A nice touch from a design standpoint is that Haru is about the only person wearing a deep, living green, rather than the prisoner brown/grey/very dried-out green combination.
(14:11) Haru did at least succeed in finding his father, Tyro.
(14:29) This exchange does nicely to set up Tyro as a kind individual whose sense of humour has not been totally eradicated by the situation he’s in.
(14:52) Tyro tells Katara that there’s no escape plan, only a survival plan.
(14:58) There are some female prisoners in this shot! Which is evidence of female earthbenders, even though we still don’t see very many in the rest of the series.
(15:14) Much like in town, Katara is reminded that things aren’t necessarily so simple as “fight back”. She’s talking to people who have been dealing with the Fire Nation, unsuccessfully, for years. What does fighting back look like to these people, after all this time? What do they stand to lose?
(15:21) I do love this exchange. Tyro says, “I’m sorry, but we’re powerless,” and Katara replies, “We’ll see about that.” What she wants and what she aims to achieve is to give the prisoners here their power back. She’s trying to help them to help themselves. Even though this speech doesn’t work. Very eloquent for an impromptu speech, too.
(16:44) Aang and Sokka arrive to provide backup.
(17:01) Katara refuses to leave the prison until she’s accomplished her objective. She emphasises that it’s the people she’s not giving up on. For all her character development over the series, this trait stays exactly the same, arguably the very core of her character.
(17:30) We get the split in group opinion again. Katara and Aang want to stay and help, Sokka wants to leave. Outvoted, and aware that he’s not going to overcome Katara’s stubbornness on this point, Sokka says they’d better hide.
(17:48) Two guards report an Appa sighting to the Warden. This is actually a really good drawback to the convenience of having a flying bison, narratively - he’s just not all that inconspicuous.
(18:06) The Warden throws a man overboard for questioning whether the difference between a flying bison or a flying buffalo is all that pertinent. Love this show. I’m also getting serious “do the tides command this ship?” vibe. Only less competent. Though the Warden does have the competence to get the core point that there’s something amiss, and orders a full search of the rig.
(18:42) Aang wishes he knew how to make a hurricane, because then the Warden would run away and the party could just take his keys. Now this is what people mean when they call Aang naive. Note that this wishful thinking from Aang doesn’t involve direct confrontation with the Warden. He wants the problem to go away. It’s not an issue with Aang’s intellect, it’s an issue with Aang’s psychology.
(18:53) Sokka wants to give the earthbenders some literal power. Some literal substance they can bend so that they can free themselves.
(19:08) It’s Aang who points out that earthbenders are able to bend coal, and the Fire Nation keeps coal on the rig. Naive, not stupid!
(19:22) Like I said, Sokka doesn’t often lead the way or deal with the party’s biggest ideas, but he is absolutely unmatched when it comes to making their goals into workable plans. As Katara asks Sokka “are you sure this is going to work?” we can be sure that the details here were Sokka’s doing. Moreover, he’s applied knowledge of vents he picked up earlier in the episode.
It’s also worth noting that Sokka was against staying to rescue the earthbenders and still put his all into coming up with a plan once he was outvoted. He works with Katara and Aang in good faith so that the disagreement doesn’t wreck their teamwork.
(20:02) Once again, Aang provides the muscle as he airbends some staggering quantities of coal onto the deck.
(20:22) Again, quite realistically, the earthbenders are hesitant to take the opportunity Katara’s just provided. The Warden underlines the point that it’s Katara’s inspirational words versus years of oppression and despair. Sure, that is the problem here. Katara tries, and she’s mocked by the villain for trying.
(20:59) But as the lump of coal crashes into the back of the Warden’s head, the show says that Katara was right and the Warden was wrong. Katara’s faith was not misplaced and her words and actions did make a difference here. Even if it sounded silly to start with.
(21:09) Love that the coal actually ignites when hit by fireblasts.
(21:25) Yes, we did see a female earthbender prisoner fighting back there! And I’m still pretty sure that this is one of the vanishingly few occasions we’ll see female earthbenders active in the background of the series.
(21:57) The earthbenders prioritise getting off the rig.
(22:05) Here’s Katara again. This is the first we see her actively participating in this skirmish. She hasn’t actually done much fighting - the point here was always what she could do to empower others to fight. She’s still got her necklace at this point. Notice also Aang’s creative use of airbending to propel small pieces of coal at the Fire Nation soldiers.
(22:33) The earthbenders steal a Fire Nation ship and head back to the mainland. Katara’s lost her necklace in this shot. Haru and Tyro spell out the effect of Katara’s actions.
(23:04) Tyro declares his intention to take back all their villages, which tells us that the prisoners were not from just one place. They must have been brought in from several towns and villages in the general area. Looks like the gAang’s leaving some insurgents behind them, right in Ozai’s coal supply.
(23:26) Haru thanks Katara for her help with that small thing of returning his dad for him, and wishes he could do the same for her. She also realises that she’s lost her mother’s necklace at this point.
(23:35) And who should pick it up but Zuko, who we haven’t seen for almost two whole episodes. Presumably he’s followed a report of Avatar-based shenanigans, and he’s got real sharp eyes to pick out the one Water Tribe thing in all this.

Hey, Stitchy!
What’s Toph’s favorite hobby outside of bending (and scamming people)? How did she discover it? What does she like about it? Is it something she invites people to do with her or is it strictly a solo activity?
💜💜 you!!
Tumblr media
Ever!!! : D
Tumblr media
Look it's you ;)
This is a great question, and a tough one!
Idk I feel like during the day, she's super active and pushing herself to be this great earthbender all the time, that in her free time, she utilizes it to relax and maybe unwind by doing something that isn't chucking rocks and yelling at people.
I like the idea that she treats herself and gets a massage every week or something. She'll hide it under the excuse that she's preventing injury or something, but she likes the activity in general! I can see her inviting Katara or Suki to this, even the boys... Just a day to unwind! Actually, you could probably add yoga as an activity she would like. She throws rocks and beats people up on a daily basis, sometimes she just wants to go for a more restorative exercise at the end of the day.
I can also see her being a foodie. Her heightened senses probably makes her a pretty good food critic. So on weekends, perhaps she invites Sokka to this fancy new restaurant that apparently is serving the best steak in town and they'll be the judge of it.
A lot of people HC that Toph has a great singing voice, so maybe that's what she does in her free time! Either enjoying music or singing in the privacy of her own home or whatever. This might even spill into wanting to go to theaters/plays for the musical aspect (if there is any) and just the outlandish performance people put on with their voices.
Toph is probably a person that loves indulging her senses for her hobbies. So things that sound pretty, feel nice, and taste good would probably be up her alley. She probably discovers these types of hobbies when she's alone and finding ways to relax at the end of the day and realizes that she feels super calm when she sings or something.
Idk perhaps these aren't really hobbies, but I do think that she would find things in her free time that are different from what she does during the day, if that makes sense. But yeah... If anyone else has any ideas on what Toph does in her free time, feel free to let me know! :D
Thank you so much for the ask, ever! I appreciate your help with loving Toph Beifong. Hope your day is as lovely as you!
......
Send me asks about Toph! It's Toph Beifong Loving Hours :)

this is not about the ask game but was wondering if you had any thoughts about modern au princess yue? (super random but i think i saw some yue love from you on my dash this morning and saw u were taking asks right now) have a nice night/day 💛💛💛
Hiya Sonny!! I’m a lil late responding cause today was hectic lmao, but it was good!! I hope you’re also having a good night/day haha.
Bud I am always taking asks, I love getting asks, I love this ask. I have never once had thoughts about a modern au Princess Yue, but now I’m BRIMMING with thoughts.
(This got a lil long, sorry bout that)
Imma put this in a modern bending world, cause I can
This is long post-war, don’t think too hard on how the history played out. Doesn’t matter.
Arnook is still the Chief of the Northern Water Tribe, and Yue is the princess. There’s still a bit of sexism in the tribe, but benders are equal and Yue is treated with the respect she deserves.
Whenever Arnook went to World Leader Conferences when Yue was little, she went with him as his heir apparent. Similarly, Sokka and Katara attended with Chief Hakoda. Lu Ten attended with Fire Lord Iroh, and Zuko tagged along sometimes.
All that to say, childhood gaang antics ensued.
Sokka had a crush on Yue from age 7 to age 14. Yue had a crush on Sokka from age 8 to age 10. At age 10, Suki came to a World Leader Conference with the leader of the Kyoshi Warriors to observe the guard work (aka her guardian couldn’t find a babysitter) and Yue instantly decided she was in love.
When she wasn’t traveling with the Chief, Yue had tutors teaching her about etiquette, politics, languages and dialects, cultures, and anything else a future Chief would need. She didn’t have time for friends back home, and even if she did, she never had the freedom for them.
Aang was raised by the Air Nomads, and was presented as the Avatar at 16.
So what I’m getting at, is that in this perfect world where there’s no war and no tension between the four nations, the Gaang are a well established group of the children of world’s leaders.
Yue, aged 17, presents her case to her dad for permission to attend University outside of the Northern Water Tribe. Arnook is extremely against it. After like 4 months of arguing and persuading, he lets her send in an application. She gets accepted to a prestigious Political Science program, and after another month of debate over it, he lets her go.
At this point, Zuko is the oldest at 22, Sokka is 20, Suki is 20, Katara is 19, Yue is 18, Aang is 18, and Toph is 17. They all study at Republic City University (RCU). Have I ever seen LOK? No. Did I do any research for this? No. Our imaginations are flexible. They study in Republic City cause I say so.
Everyone already knows each other except for Toph, who they meet at RCU.
Yue is dating Suki, Sokka is dating Zuko, who is now the heir apparent of Fire Lord Iroh. Katara, Aang, and Toph are all single.
Yue loves talking cultural differences with the Gaang. Whether that means ideological beliefs, ethics, laws, government systems, religion, the arts, everyday life, whatever, she finds it fascinating.
Religion-wise, Yue is very spiritual. She strongly believes in the power of nature. One weekend every month, Yue and Katara go on hikes in the mountains. She has a window-sill garden where she grows flowers and herbs.
Yue and Suki like to explore Republic City together. They dip into thrift stores, tea parlors, skate parks, the drive-in movies, everywhere they can. Ofc, the Gaang goes on adventures across the city all the time, but Yue and Suki make sure they have date night at least once every two weeks.
Yanno how back when Obama’s daughter was in college, they tried to make her look like a bad person for doing normal teenager things? People definitely do that to Yue and the Gaang. People follow them around campus sometimes, taking pictures without permission and generally being nuisances. After someone follows her into a lecture class, pestering her and disrupting the class, Yue calmly and politely posts a statement that clearly states that she’s entitled to an education just like everyone else, and if people insist on disrupting her education like this, she will be forced to take legal action. Like a bad bitch.
After Zuko, Sokka, Suki, and Katara have all graduated, only Toph, Aang, and Yue are left in school. Toph, Aang, and Yue rent out a big apartment near campus. Sokka and Zuko live together, and Suki and Katara also share an apartment. Their parents or guardians have all agreed to let them have until the youngest ones graduate before they have to come home and get started on life.
That summer after Toph, Aang, and Yue graduate is absolutely insane. They sit down the week before graduation and craft an epic bucket list of everything they want to do before they have to enter the real world. They spend summer going through every single one, from pro-bending tournaments to hosting their own bake-off.
Sadly, everything must come to an end. Summer ends, Zuko goes back to the fire Nation, Sokka and Katara go back to the Southern Water Tribe, Suki heads back to Kyoshi, Toph decides to stay in Republic City with her girlfriend Smellerbee, and Yue and Aang go to the Northern Water Tribe.
Years later, they bring the world into a Golden Age. Avatar Aang holds peace among the four nations, but really it’s a Gaang group effort. Connections between the Fire Nation and the Water Tribes have never been better, after Fire Lord Zuko married Ambassador Sokka in a wedding officiated by Chief Yue. Katara becomes Chief of the Southern Water Tribes. Toph is a master sculpter. She smuggles money, jewels, and drugs inside hollow sculptures sometimes to get things where they need to go, but that’s not the point here. Suki teaches martial arts in the Northern Water Tribe, and she advises her wife, Chief Yue, on the side. Together, they see about finally ending the sexism of the Tribe once and for all.
They’re all really fucking happy. Yue dies of old age.
