dear god... suddenly emo about Magdalena and Isaac 😢😢
#this is funny because i have so little of their relationship defined in comparison to Gioia and Benedictus#but 🥺🤌🏻 thinking about isaac losing his whole family and fighting like hell to get his sister back.. it's so 😭#but once he gets her back she's painfully quiet. always looking over her shoulder. and simmering with anger!#i think he struggles to reconcile the past version of her + her present self. and how to connect with her through all the muck 🤔#OH.... WAIT i figured it out! just like regular bennie and gioi (fun fact. i realized her name doesn't really shorten nicely just now lol)#i think they build that strong underlying connection because isaac invests attention and care into maggie's music. he shows up to all her#recitals ykwim!.. it's a little different from B+G because isaac isn't maggie's stand-in parent for their neglectful parents.#he functionally Is maggie's parent. but I think Maggie still takes away the same love from it as gioia‚ for different but similar reasons.#I think this is so important for her too because it is. Very Difficult for Maggie to make friends because she's so shaken up..#i feel like bennie would try to get her to go therapy but she'd either refuse on the basis of not trusting authority anymore? OR‚ just like#kat‚ they'd tell her her experiences weren't real... in any case‚ music is maggie's Only outlet. so isaac taking interest and supporting#her in that endeavor‚ when she has very little else‚ would mean a lot to her. i think this all adds a level of 😢 to isaac and vergil's#relationship too because. originally isaac just didn't like vergil due to the whole underground rebellion schtick. that's what got his and#maggie's parents killed. BUT since Magdalena literally had no friends once she came home‚ I think Isaac is really overjoyed when she and#vergil strike up a friendship‚ since this is before Vergil's realized his true nature- the order is a collaborative thing between the two#of them after all. so at first Isaac is glad that his sister finally has a friend. and‚ just like in their future‚ Vergil helps Magdalena#grow into herself and come out of her shell. so isaac likes Vergil in the beginning‚ is grateful for him! plus V's his bosses/sponsor's kid#so there's a nice little 😊 there too. BUT THEN magdalena starts helping vergil remember things - dante - and they start#creating the Order‚ and i think Isaac feels this Great Dread. because vergil is maggie's only friend. vergil saved her!#but the things magdalena gets up to with vergil will get them killed in the future. (and it does lol!)#i think this is where the great split happens between B+G and I+M‚ because Benedictus disappeared before he had to make any Tough Parenting#Choices with Gioia. he was functionally a parent to her‚ but she just saw him as her Super Cool Older Brother.#Isaac is magdalena's older brother but he's also her Guardian (derogatory) ykwim? so. i think when he puts his foot down and tries to#forbid Magdalena from doing anti-demon stuff‚ which evolves into her not being allowed to see Vergil‚ it causes a rift between them.#i'm not sure how severe i want the rift to be... 🙁 by the start of the game it can't be super deep because kat has to be familiar with#isaac 🤪 but then ig he doesn't need to know Magdalena knows her Because of the Order? kat could just be... a friend... 😳🤫#although this then begs the question of whether or not he even knows Magdalena was still involved with the Order all this time? because on#the surface Maggie's schedule really is just work work work. he doesn't have to know What her work is...#that also adds a ☹️ when Magdalena goesmissingdies and then comes back possessed by a demon because it's like groundhog day for him- again‚#he could do nothing to protect his sister from the demons BUT this time it was him raising and watching her‚ not their parents

Horikoshi recently revealed that Endeavor was supposed to die during the PLF war and that honestly validates something I've been feeling but couldn't quite articulate: "Horikoshi doesn't know who the central Todoroki is" (or he does, but he changed it halfway through to the worse option)
Endeavor dying would have been AMAZING if Shoto were the central character in the Todoroki subplot. The main reason this is so is that Endeavor would be out of the way. Shoto would have full reigns on how he wants to handle Touya (the "final villain" of the Todoroki subplot), and the rest of the family can play a role in this as a supporting cast.
However, Shoto is NOT the central character in the Todoroki subplot. Or, at least, he used to be, but he's not anymore. He's not allowed to have a final fight with Touya because Touya needs to still confront Endeavor. Regardless of how that fight ends, whether it's Shoto saving his brother or knocking him out, Shoto isn't allowed to end the conflict until Touya and Endeavor interact.
At the start of the series, it was really obvious that Shoto was the central figure (and was our pov character) for his family drama. During the sports festival, HE'S the one who shared the backstory. The flashbacks are framed around what HE saw. HE is the one taking a step forward to fix his family, and it starts with reconciling with his mom. At this point, Endeavor is what I'll call "the instigator". He is the cause for the family drama, and though we may not know Touya at this point, Endeavor has already released the future final boss of the subplot into the world.
In the Pro Hero arc, Endeavor becomes his own central figure as a pov character into the world of pros. He then overlaps with the Todoroki subplot by wanting to atone and remove himself from the role of the instigator. The thing is, he can't. What was done cannot be undone, and the most he can do at this point is try to make things better for his family moving forward. At this point, he and Shoto can coexist as central figures because the final boss has not yet been introduced.
The second Touya confirmed his identity, either Endeavor or Shoto had to stop being the central figure. Having Touya need to fight two heroes before being able to come to any end just feels sloppy, and since Shoto was given the first fight, it makes him seem like the less important figure. Even Touya doesn't care! He spends a good chunk of the fight talking about how he'd rather fight Endeavor. This makes Endeavor into the central figure as he is now the one to end the fight. HE'S the one the final boss has been waiting for, not Shoto.
The thing is, this started as Shoto's story, so it would have made sense for it to end as Shoto's story as well. Even if it meant killing Endeavor to force Shoto to be the ONLY central figure (probably to Touya's dismay) it would have allowed Shoto the space he needed to lead the ending he deserved, rather than be pushed to a side character.
TL;DR Endeavor surviving forced Shoto into the role of a supporting character in a plot line that started as SHOTO'S plot line.

SOMETHING TO LIVE FOR
Just an idea I wanted to get out of my head. A quick Dabi x F!Reader where he gets the (mostly) happy ending that he deserves, god damn it. I may expand on this at some point, we’ll see. Contains vague spoilers for chapter 390.
1.2k words
Tumblr media
You’re watching the coverage and you see the moment when Touya’s badly charred body hits the ground. You were supposed to stay away, to remain in the flanks supporting the fight, but you book it to his location; Endeavor and all the others be damned.
The Todoroki family looks on in stunned silence as you drop to your knees beside him, crying his name and begging him not to die. He can’t see you, but he can hear you, and he croaks a single, pained word, “…Doll…”
Your heart shatters.
He was your world and you were watching it slowly slipping away.
You plead for him to hang on while searching for a place to lay your hands. Even in his fractured state of mind, he knows what you’re doing and he’s afraid that you might take a lethal toll on your body by using your quirk to heal him. It probably wouldn’t even be enough to save him, you were bitterly aware of that, but it wasn’t going to stop you.
“Don’t.”
“I have to try, Touya! I love you! I love you so much! Please don’t leave me!”
He knew this. You’d told him countless times before, but even so, he’s grateful that these are the last words he ever hears. Knowing that he was truly loved tempered the pain of failing to accomplish his goal. He just wished that he could stay to love you longer, to give you the normal life that you deserved.
You pour every ounce of yourself into keeping him alive and the chaos around you eventually fades to black.
. . .
It feels like everything is over in an instant.
His eyes flutter open and he briefly experiences the same sights and sounds from the battlefield before realizing that he was somewhere else; in a brightly lit, sterile room. He didn’t recognize this place, but you were sitting beside his hospital bed, fast asleep while upright in a folding chair.
He’s so relieved to see you that bloody tears well in his eyes before spilling over onto his cheeks. You looked different, healthy, and no longer war-torn. How much time had passed?
He’s not entirely sure what he’s expecting to see when he looks down at his hands, but the fact that he has both is startling enough. It takes some effort for him to move his tired body. He touches his face and finds smooth skin where scars and staples had once been. Was he dreaming? Was he dead?
He quickly decides that he didn’t mind either option, so long as he got to stay with you. He watches you sleep for what feels like an eternity before finally reaching over to take your hand.
You were solid. Real. Warm. Familiar.
“Doll?”
You wake to the sound of his hoarse voice and, for a second, you’re half convinced you must be hallucinating.
“Touya?” Your heart leaps inside your chest. You’d been praying for this moment for so long, having fantasized about it so many times that it almost didn’t seem real.
You throw yourself at him, pulling him into a fierce hug, which he reciprocates as best he can.
“Don’t cry, Doll,” he says softly while rubbing your back.
“You’re one to talk,” you sniffle, having noticed the crimson tears on his face. “Fuck, I love you so much, I’m so glad you’re awake.” You start sobbing in spite of yourself, “I missed you.”
He clears his throat, getting choked up as he squeezes you tighter, “I love you, too. More than anything.”
You enjoy each other’s company for a while, holding each other in comfortable silence, just as you always had. This man was your best friend, your lover, your fucking soul mate. You could have sat with him in silence until the end of time and it would have been more than enough just knowing that he was still breathing.
“How long was I out?” He asks quietly, expecting you to say a few weeks, or maybe a couple months.
You pull back to look at him wearing a sad smile, “Three years.”
“What!?” He blinks at you in shock.
You nod while squeezing his hand, “Just like Sekoto Peak.”
He probably shouldn’t have been surprised, it made sense considering his previous experience, though he was in much better shape this time around. His body looked damn near brand new, but he did still have some scarring on his torso, which would forever serve as a reminder of the pain and suffering he’d endured.
Over the course of the next few days, you explain how you’d found the best healers who’d survived the war to work on him. You also gently break the news about the villains losing and Endeavor still being alive, though he’d long since retired after issuing an apology to him and their family. You assure him that his efforts hadn’t been completely in vain, as society had made some changes for the better over the last three years, and the PLF was still working underground.
He takes his time processing all of this information, not quite sure how to feel. You help him through it, rarely leaving his side.
. . .
One week later, you walk into his room and sit on the bed to take his hand. He’d been doing well. You could see him slowly starting to envision a future for himself for the first time in years and you believed it was time to press forward.
“Touya, there’s someone very special who I want you to meet.”
He looks at you curiously, and with a bit of apprehension.
You smile fondly, “I think you’ll like him. He’s a lot like you.”
He narrows his eyes, but agrees to this meeting.
You step out and return a few minutes later carrying a small boy on your hip.
Touya knows as soon as he sees him.
His heart stops, his blood runs cold, and his stomach lurches. He tells himself that it couldn’t be possible, but there was no denying what was right in front of him, and the timeline added up.
“Mama!” The toddler says sweetly, beaming while tugging on the front of your shirt. He had a mop of white hair and big, beautiful blue eyes, just like his father.
He was the most precious and yet utterly terrifying little thing that Touya had ever encountered in his life. He stares at him in awe while fighting back tears.
You move to sit in the chair beside the bed and the boy suddenly takes notice of Touya. It’s rather endearing how the two gawk at each other.
“Touya, this is Seiko,” you say softly while ruffling his messy hair.
The look of pure love and devotion on your face as you gaze at your son—his son—makes his heart swell. His Adam’s apple bobs in his throat as he struggles to keep his emotions in check.
“The Sweepy Man,” Seiko says while pointing at Touya. “Mama, he ‘wake.”
“Yes, baby. He was asleep for a long time, but he’s finally awake. Do you wanna say hi?”
Suddenly shy, Seiko hides his face against your neck before mustering the courage to peek at the so-called Sleepy Man, whom he’d been visiting every day since birth. “Hi.”
“Hi,” Touya’s voice cracks as a single crimson tear escapes from the corner of his eye, yet he finds himself smiling. “Hi, Seiko. I’m…I’m your dad.”

Compared to other darlings gremlin Tomura’s darling has it really rough. I think one of the first signs that Tomura matures is him deleting all that footage AFO filmed. Sure he still keeps them captive and non cons them, but once he realizes that he truly loves them he wants to make sure that they aren’t humiliated and degraded like they were before
Meanwhile Dabi goes scorched earth and fucking sends HIS videos to Endeavor lmao. Like Dabi is so petty that he'll ask Darling on-camera whose fault it is that they're in this position with him and make them say it's Endeavor's fault
But post-gremlin Tomura regrets ever having those recordings and esp regrets him and AfO using it to taunt All Might. Like AfO sends it via an encrypted account to show that All Might can't save everyone: not Tomura, and not Tomura's captive either. Though AfO doesn't ever send anything too graphic: just stills and short clips of Darling at their mercy. There's one where he's got them in Tomura's lap while AfO politely asks them if they'd like a Hero to save them. And obviously they say yes and are crying, begging for someone to help, and AfO condescendingly reassures them that he's sending this video straight to All Might himself! Surely he'll come and rescue you soon...
But after AfO's imprisonment, Tomura becomes determined to keep Darling safe and eventually starts to realize how much he's harmed them and how that isn't what he wants from them. They're not just an outlet for stress, they're someone that he wants to BE with. It still is unfair and cruel to them, but his dream is to take what he wants and destroy this world; so, he'll take Darling because he wants them/needs them, and treasure them.
He's more attentive to their needs and lets them have alone time more often if they ask, and he'll actually respect when they say they don't want him to touch them. It won't stop him from jerking off NEXT to them, though. He deletes all the footage of them and uses the League's money to spoil them with anything they want. Any time someone tries to butter him up or flirt with him, he rejects them at best and threatens them at worst. Flattery does nothing for him, and EVERYONE in this organization knows that he's got his Darling. You're insulting them--and him--by trying to pull off a shitty seduction move like that. And nobody gets to insult them or humiliate them any more.
Which makes AfO taking over his body so much more depressing, because Darling can tell immediately that he's not who he used to be. AfO still uses them like he uses everyone else, and as a result the League gets very protective of Darling while Tomura is dormant; Spinner especially doesn't like leaving Darling alone with AfO in Tomura's body. And it gives Tomura even more motivation to fight against AfO from within and destroy everything in society on HIS terms. But now he actually has a family and his Darling to live for.
He finds that so strange, having people like Spinner and Toga and Darling that make him want to live. He used to just accept that once he destroyed everything, he probably would be fine dying once he got what he wanted. But now he doesn't want to die because he's got them to worry about. There was one night after he defeated Redestro where he had climbed into bed with Darling and quietly told them: "I don't know if I can love anyone, at least not in a good way. But for what it's worth...I do love you. You don't have to feel the same way. In fact, you shouldn't, not after everything I've done to you. I'm sorry I can't love you in a way that's good and what you deserve. I want to try, though."

Endeavor - Intro/Headcanons
Tumblr media
Endeavor is a very underrated character.
yes he was an abuser, but he is trying to be a better father. and even though hen still gets mad and doesn't really know how to show his emotions he's still trying. As someone who doesn't have the best relationship with her father, and also as some one who is trying to be a better person I can appreciate that.
I feel like if somebody were to give him a chance, somebody that has little to no knowledge of his past or status he could actually have a stable and healthy relationship with such a person.
but that on it's own is boring so make it a reader who was just recently put in an orphanage as she was saved from her neglectful parents and has no other family. we'll keep her around the age of 4-15 as those were the years that endeavor missed the most with his kids.
now, how would these two meet? I have a couple ideas and I'll write a fanfic (or fanfics) for the most popular one. (there's a poll below for y'all to decide.)
option 1 : Bus stop
Tumblr media
reader is around 5,6,7 years old and quirkless.
so you and Endeavor have a similar morning commute at the same bus stop, at the same time, every morning. you go to school, and him to his agency. and while Endeavor never really cared for this, one morning you happen to forget your coat at the orphanage. (not that it kept you warm anyway.) the sight of a child in winter, cold and alone, practically pulled at his heart strings. a feeling overcame him I suppose, a need to protect and provide perhaps. and begrudgingly he got out a sweater, all warm and fluffy and lent it to you, grumbling something about giving it back to him later. now all snuggled up within the oversized cotton fibers of the sweater, warm and happy, all you could really do is mumble out a little thank you. Imma bout' to pull a grinch but Endeavor's heart grew 3 times that day.
Tumblr media
Option 2 : support hero
reader is 15 and quirkless but uses support items to help her if she needs anything.
you are the apprentice of his main support hero, a wild, spunky woman who spends her days drinking, drunk, or hungover. ( I mean... good for her.) and yes while she does teach you, she usaully leaves all the real work to you. at this point she's your apprentice. so when Endeavor comes it's not her that really helps it's you! you repair, you improve, you operate the rest of the support heroes, honestly he should give you a raise. and it's nice, having you around I mean, you just always seem to make his day better, either by showing him cat memes, or explaining your latest obsession to him, or just being your self. it's a talkative and optimistic x furious monster that will fight to the death for them dynamic or a brings instant noodles to share for lunch x uses his fire quirk to actually cook the instant noodles with his fire quirk dynamic.
Tumblr media
Option 3 : Dabi
more of a Endeavor-Dabi mix for the drama. reader is 4 and gets her quirk in the story. her quirk is a heightened version of shoto's quirk which I'll expand on if this is the fan favorite.
you are the product of Dabi and a fling he had when he was 19 or 20, and while he may not have the most money or have the money, he still tires to protect you and and make you feel as cherished and loved as one can. growing up he never really showed you what a hero was. all you need to know is that they are not good people but don't tell anyone that lots of people don't know that and might get angry. now this is fine and all, Dabi protects your innocence while also protecting you from the world that hurt him. but one thing he negelcted to teach you is who is a hero. because the description he gave you "people attempting to 'save' people and fight 'bad guys' using their quirks often with swarms of people around them." only applies to heros in action and/or heros that the public actually like. so when Endeavor is placed to patrol in a relatively bad neighbourhood (it's the best one dabi could afford HE"S TRYING C"MON) around the time kids go and comeback from school to make sure they get home safe is when he meets you. a little girl with white hair like snow and sapphire blue eyes that glisten with joy.
POLLS!!!
thx for reading!!! byyeee.

So I finished reading through the Naruto manga for the first time last night, and I had some thoughts about how similar parts of Obito's and Touya's stories are. They have very different pasts and different reasons for becoming 'villains' in the worlds they live in, but they do have several things in common.
Tumblr media
When they're younger they're both bright, energetic, and determined kids that both have a goal of becoming an important person in their communities (hokage/hero). While Obito didn't really have family or parental figures in his life, given that he's Uchiha there's most likely a sense of legacy he's trying to live up to similar to Touya, and they're both working towards their goals so they finally feel seen by those around them. They both feel ignored by the people they consider important (Rin and Minato/Endeavor) in favor of those who are seen as more skilled than them (Kakashi/Shoto), so they train harder and harder in an effort to finally be noticed.
Both of them 'die' tragically young at the age of thirteen, though in very different ways. Obito dies with Kakashi whom he had finally bonded with, and Rin whom he loved though he still didn't have the courage to tell her his feelings. While Touya 'dies' alone, waiting for a father who won't show up for him until he's already gone.
Tumblr media
However, they're both saved by a major villain that was thought to be long gone They're revived and healed using rather unethical science (White Zetsu/Nomu). And they both come out of the experience with weaker power than what they once had, and scars covering a large portion of their bodies.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
While Touya never buys into AFO's plans and immediately breaks out and runs home, Obito has to stay and recover. Part of him even feels indebted to Madara, even though he is a bit creeped out by him and his philosophy. Eventually, though, he gets out too with the 'help' of one of the Zetsu's. However, when they both arrive to reunite with the people they're trying to get to, they see something that sets them on their dark paths.
Tumblr media
They come to different solutions for what they want to do (Infinite Tsukuyomi/getting revenge on his family) but they both spend time walking the world and see how more than just their personal situations are fucked up. They see how much injustice there is in their societies, and how the people up top that are supposed to protect others frequently harm and use them. (The world of Naruto is quite a bit more fucked up than MHA, but the point still stands.)
After that, they both go by an alias (Tobi and Madara/Dabi) and start setting their plans in motion, eventually teaming up with the villain who saved them. Later on, they both fight their past loved ones (Minato and Kakashi/Endeavor and Shoto) who don't realize who they're fighting initially. Though once they do finally get it, Obito and Touya point out how they should have realized it sooner.
Tumblr media
(This is a minor one that I didn't quite know where to put, but they do both show up to the final battle with white hair and outfits.)
Tumblr media
They both end up fighting and losing to the one that they've always envied (Kakashi/Shoto), but they get back up and do something violently self-destructive that has the power to kill a lot of people that neither has complete control over at first.
Tumblr media
During this, and the pain they're experiencing, they both start having flashes of a life that could have been. A life that should have been so simple to have.
Tumblr media
That's about where we leave Touya, he's down, but he hasn't been completely saved yet. Meanwhile, thanks to Kakashi and Naruto's efforts, Obito begins to realize that there is hope still in the world, and that not all of it is hell. And he ends up fighting with them to take the bigger threat to the world down. Until he eventually sacrifices himself in the end to save Kakashi (and Naruto), just like he did during his first death.
Tumblr media
If Obito, who did way more heinous things than Touya has ever done, can be saved and redeemed in the end, then I believe Touya can too. But, unlike Obito, I think he's going to get to live afterwards.

How do u feel about Endeavor being back on the battle field? I'm all cool for a good fight, but I thought it was a bit strange since his biggest flaw was prioritizing hero work over his family. I mean, I get why Shoto and everyone else is there, but he just sticks out to me. Granted he is the number one hero, but my point still stands. Seems counter productive given literally everything his arc is about.
Well…
As someone who has written a fanfic in which Enji takes a period of leave from work to stay with his son and support his physical and psychological healing you might picture my first reaction to ‘Enji goes back on the battlefield while Touya is taken away to receive medical care’ had me think “NO! I WANTED HIM TO STAY WITH HIS SON! I WANTED HIM TO PROVE TO HIS FAMILY THEY MATTER MORE THAN WORK!” but the problem is, of course, I’ve a western mentality which prioritize family over work while in a Japanese story at most you can judge them of equal value or prioritize work (in the past you would have to prioritize work now things are shifting so you can archive a balance).
Part of the HUGE problem we have with the Todoroki family is that it is a family with some strong Japanese views which clash a lot with western ones so that we often end up disappointed with what’s going on with it when it’s actually much better than what it looks to us.
Now this is also the moment in which I make a PREMISE. While I’ve a general understanding of Japanese beliefs due to reading and researching on it and know how those beliefs are represented in manga and anime (often in an excessive, over the top way to deliver a point and not in a perfect reproduction of how they are in real life), most of those beliefs are changing and, anyway, I’m not Japanese so don’t take me as 100% reliable. What follows is what I managed to learn and understand as well but I’m just a person and I don’t own The Truth so I might have made mistakes.
Also this is complicate and would require a much longer meta. For simplicity sake I’ll try to summarize things so I apologize in advantage if things come out unclear. Feel free to ask again if something really sounds too messy to be understandable.
So…
I’ve discussed about it in another post but in the ’70, ’80 a father like Enji would be considered a model father in Japan. This kind of view is shifting so BNHA actually criticizes what Enji does, but not as hard as the western audience would like because… it’s a recent shift so, while Enji has to prove he’s going to be a better father… for the Japanese audience he doesn’t have to put as much effort as the western audience feels he needs to put in it (never mentioning sometimes the manga forgets that what Enji did is bad and has other characters do the same without criticizing them at all…).
There’s another problem in addition to this.
Chap 302 and part of the chapters that followed disappointed many because while the family reflected on their behavior… they didn’t seem sorry enough for what they did to Touya, they talked about fighting him, stopping him but not about saving him, were focused on apologizing to Hawks, to society but they hardly felt like they were understanding his pain. They don’t try to reach for him emotionally, showing him empathy and understanding. Enji claiming he’ll look after Touya after he wins All for One is more an Enji claiming he’ll make sure he’ll take responsibility for his son, will make sure he won’t trouble society further than that he finally will give him the emotional attention Touya needed. Enji will understand he has never looked at Touya (as in paid attention to him, tried to understand him), that he has to apologize to his son only short before he’ll realize his son will try to nuke Japan and Rei will also do so when she’ll see them both about to explode.
That’s because for a Japanese audience the biggest sin Endeavor committed isn’t abusing his child to the point he did what he did… but to have a child who did what he did. As Shouto said Dabi is their family’s crime/sin, meaning the family isn’t supposed to see him as a person they’ve mistreated, but as a sin they’ve committed against society, a sin of which Shouto too, Shouto who, poor kid, had no hands in Touya’s mistreating, is blamed by society (I’ve discussed about this in another post), he is punished for it by having to fight Touya (chap 352). And also note how Horikoshi expresses the change in views.
While having Shouto (and Enji) fight and kill Touya as a punishment for what Touya did to society would have been perfectly fine in the past, Enji makes clear he can’t kill his son no matter what and class A expresses sympathy for Shouto, they find unfair the fact he has to fight his brother, even the journalist who wanted to demand the head of the Villains cut herself off when she realizes she’s asking Enji to kill his own son.
So it makes sense Horikoshi had to absolutely send Enji (and Shouto) back to fight All for One.
It’s not because Enji has to play Hero again, but because he and his family are considered directly responsible for Touya’s crimes against society and therefore they have to atone by giving their all to save society even when this is asking a lot from them.
While most of the western audience want Enji to atone toward his family (and some don’t even believe at this point there’s something he can do to be forgiven), the Japanese audience want him to atone also toward society for the damage Touya caused.
And note how Horikoshi went at it by having Natsuo, the one who was the most vocal critic of how Enji neglected his children and caused Touya’s ‘death’, be the one who tells his father to go fight, to leave them behind, that it’s better if he does because he would be of no use to them there, his family having suffered enough heat already so he can go fight. Enji goes to fight after having ‘permission’ from his family, represented by Natsuo only merely because we know differently from Rei and Fuyumi Natsuo resented him for his neglect so if Natsuo says it's okay if Enji goes we as readers are meant to assume it is since for Enji's family it's okay if he goes (the fact that we ultimately agree or disagree though remains up to us).
Anyway the message here is that Horikoshi is trying to archive balance, to have Enji give equal importance to his family and his work but, at the same time, have Natsuo also accepting that what Enji does as Endeavor is important.
Enji being willing to die to be with his son and Natsuo accepting his father can’t stay with them (even if they’re seriously hurt) but has to go back to fight because his work is important too because if All for One wins they’re all lost are two faces of how Horikoshi is trying to archive balance between ‘work is important’ and ‘family is important’.
In a western story, we probably wouldn’t content ourselves with this sort of balance. We had to see Enji neglect his family for too long in favor of his work, to have emotional ‘balance’ we would now need to have the story allowing Enji to neglect his work in favor of his family because the lesson here would need to be he should always have prioritized his family and never neglect it.
If he were to do something like leaving his family to go back to work, no matter how important that work is, we’ll expect him to be punished by, for example, losing his family which he has neglected one too many times.
Think at the movie “Devil’s advocate”, when Kevin Lomax neglects his wife for his works he ends up losing it. Choosing his work over her is represented as selfishness, caused by his sin of vanity, not as the right action because work is important.
In “Baby boom” J. C. Wiatt’s choice to leave her old work to spend more time taking care of her adoptive daughter is pointed as the right one. In doing so she’ll manage to start a better activity and even find love.
In “Kramer vs. Kramer” Ted Kramer’s attempts at taking care of his son which lead him to neglect and therefore lose his job and end up with one that pay him less is rewarded as ultimately he’ll be the one who’ll get custody over his child.
In “The family man” a man is lead in an alternative reality to learn that being with the woman he love and having a family with her is much better than having a work that allows him to gain millions.
We generally make movies in which work is less important than family, that neglecting work in favor of prioritizing family will lead to a reward and the opposite will lead to punishment.
In BNHA instead the goal is to have Enji view his family and his work as equally important… which is a BIG step forward considering in the past a Japanese father wasn’t expected to care for his children and nurture them (that was a mother’s job), that his duty was just to work and bring money at home and cultivate relations with his boss and coworkers by drinking with them in the evening and manga and anime tended to remark this depicting stories in which the children were learning to appreciate how it was right their fathers would neglect them in favor of their work, because their work was surely more important than be with them.
Even when criticizing the father’s actions the story would go out of its way to depict the father’s work as fundamental for the salvation of the universe and the son would ultimately forgive the father for the neglect. As I said it’s an over the top representation. Plenty of fathers in real life don’t have a work that requires them to fight for the survival of the universe and could genuinely spare some time for their kids but stories presented them as doing as such so as to pass the message fathers’ jobs are important and growing up means accepting this and loving them anyway and putting aside the fact you felt neglected.
Of course I’m not Japanese, I live in a country that recognizes a child’s need for attention from both parents as one of the child’s primary needs, that if this need isn’t satisfied the child can face psychological damage and the father is considered neglectful. The ‘but he’s saving the world’ doesn’t cancel or excuse the fact with his neglect he’s harming his child.
So back to the topic at hand… I understand why Horikoshi sent Enji (and Shouto) back to fight All for One, and I understand why Natsuo had to be the one who sent Enji to do so, basically giving Enji the pass to leave his family behind. I understand the way Horikoshi is trying to represent this represent a positive shift from a past view that was much, much worse… or, if you prefer much, much more different from ours.
Does it make me happy?
Honestly, despite understanding why Horikoshi chose to handle things in this way… I WANTED TO SEE ENJI BE WITH HIS FAMILY, FINALLY PRIORITIZING THEM. Actually I wanted all the Todoroki be together, which means Shouto too. I wanted them to have a moment a little longer than what they had for a reunion.
But maybe there will be time for this later.
Actually it’s possible even Touya will go back on the battlefield (as well as Himiko, Spinner and Compress) because, although All for One had told Tenko/Tomura he chose nothing, Tenko/Tomura actually chose the League. They were his friends, the ones he wanted to protect and be a Hero for. So it’s possible it will be up to them to call Tenko/Tomura back, to also BE THERE as ‘Heroes’ who’re there to save Tenko/Tomura.
If the League were also to be involved in defeating All for One (and therefore indirectly protecting society) it would probably easier for them to have a better ending. After all it’s a shonen trope that if a bad guy/adversary joins forces with the Hero against the main enemy then they’re kind of absolved from their crimes.
It is, of course, as unreal as it can get, but in manga it has always worked just fine (think at how in a big classic like “Dragon Ball” the enemies that change side are easily accepted and no retribution for their past crimes is demanded [okay, sometimes they die first and then get resurrected because “Dragon Ball” had always been big in its resurrecting policy]) so Horikoshi might decide to deploy it here as well. We’ll see.
In the end, as much as I’m more involved in the Todoroki family than in the rest, this isn’t the Todoroki family manga and the battle against All for One has to take precedence.
But hey, if Horikoshi or someone else were to decide to make a spin off about the TodoFam I would surely buy it!
Said all this I apologize if it felt confusing, I remind everyone this is just my opinion and since I'm not Horikoshi it has the same worth as everyone else's opinion and I thank you for your ask!
I love to talk about the Todofam so thank you for giving me the chance to do so!

i remember the comparison i was going to make!
i was going to say hawks/shigaraki but I think dabi/shigaraki would have made sense!
so with shigaraki, he was trained by a villain to be “the signal of destruction, etc, etc” and the hero society is like “oh no!!!! afo is bad an abuser for this!!!” whereas dabi was trained to be an extension of endeavor to surpass all might and the hero society is like “okay but you need to keep quiet because your dad’s career :(((((”
both are wrong and both people were affected long-term but only one of them is seen as “valid trauma” whereas the other is being called a brat/selfsh/entitled and people sympathize more with shigaraki than dabi even tho they both were traumatized
Oh my gosh, don't even get me started on this topic because I have so many thoughts on the differences in how Shigaraki is treated vs Dabi.
Shigaraki is sympathized with and recognized as a victim by the narrative, multiple characters, and the fandom. Dabi is not. It's crazy to me because they both experienced similar trauma in the way of grooming and psychological & emotional abuse. The only differences being that Touya has more positive feelings towards his abuser and Shigaraki developed negative ones and Afo is a villain while Endeavor's a hero.
The drastic differences in how they're treated makes me kinda sick. I do not understand how Deku can look at one abused grooming victim (Shigaraki), say "you're someone who needs to be saved" and become determined to help him no matter what while in the same breath looking at another abused grooming victim (Dabi) and go "Well, Endeavors a good guy! You're the problem!" (Same comparison with telling Shouto he should forgive Endeavor.) Society too, the way Touya's boardcast was met with "Wow, he's annoying" "stop airing out your family's dirty laundry" etc and essentially brushed off while in recent chapters Tomura is literally just going on about destruction and shit and there's panels of society agreeing with him and cheering him on like "Yeah, do it!" Other heroes are a little less drastic of a difference but they're still recognizing Shigaraki as a victim to at least some extent while completely disregarding Touya as a selfish brat who's just trying to defame Endeavor, some going as far to imply they think he's lying (Hawks) or say "well endeavors a good hero so idc" (Burnin). Even just how Shigaraki's arc/final fight has been going compared to Touya's is... Holy shit. Like, it's great Shigaraki is recognized as a victim and shown sympathy for the abuse and grooming hes suffered, and it's great Izuku is trying so hard to reach out to him and save him. But Touya? He's treated like the cause of the Todoroki family's problems, and the entire fight he was yelled at, victim blamed, and treated like a bratty child while actively trying to kill himself.
(the fandom, too, treat Tomura and Touya's trauma different. The amount of people I've seen devalidating Touya's trauma to a sickeningly degree- literally to the point there's people that say he WASNT abused or going on about him being a brat and calling him ableist terms saying he should have been abused to "get him to knock it off" or the victim blaming bc he was groomed into seeing the abuse as love so they say he wanted it. Like bro. Yall are sick. Ive never seen anybody talk about Tomura like that and he's generally recognized by the masses as a victim. But that difference is a whole OTHER issue i can't even get into here.)
It's just bizarre to me because even all for one points out the similarities, and him and Garaki recognized that Endeavor messed up Touya's head so bad that Afo's grooming wouldn't had worked on him. Yeah, Endeavor has been trying to change/own up to what he's done or whatever and there's definitely a difference in afo and endeavor when it comes to, like, Afo is a terrorist and shit but when it comes to the grooming and shit, they're basically on the same level. It's just fine if it's a hero doing it tho? That's brushed under the rug and resolved with a press conference? And again, the total contrast in how their victims are treated is really what's sad to me because Touya deserves the same sympathy Tomura got.

Requesting a Clove x reader fic where the two have known each other since childhood! While Clove is an aspiring Tribute, the reader is from a super privileged District 2 family who’s exempt from the reapings, for some reason. (they were close allies with the capitol, ever since the first rebellion?? they train peacekeepers or make high-tech weapons?? Idk.) The reader always knew that Clove dreamed of participating in the games, and as her BFF (best friend-turned-girlfriend), she’s always supported her in her endeavors. Hell, her main motivation in learning hand to hand combat, even though she will never need to, is just so she can spar with Clove whenever Clove can’t train with anyone else. the reader probably still sucks though.
About a year before the 74th Game, the reader realizes just how close Clove is to being “ready.” And it scares her more than anything. She still tries to support Clove, and she still helps her practice occasionally, but she is clearly losing her enthusiasm each time Clove discusses or demonstrates her progress. Whether or not Clove has to convince her, the reader eventually spills out her fears for what will happen in the arena, verging on begging her not to volunteer next year. No matter how much she wants to trust Clove, she can’t fight down the dread that now shadows her 24/7. 23 enemies (especially the other Careers, they can’t be allies forever). Mutts. Bad weather. Dehydration, starvation, illness. There are too many things that can easily go wrong, so how could she possibly be okay with her best friend/girlfriend leaving?
This is of course an angst request, but here’s where you can decide if it stays that way! Does this become an AU where Clove later decides that she won’t volunteer, even if it means throwing so much away? The glory and her many years of preparation? The expectations of her peers, teachers, neighbors and family? (But that’s okay, the reader is willing to use her own family name to back her up if she has to.) Or is Clove just too far invested, and there’s no turning away from her life purpose? If that’s the case, then… the reader needs a big fucking hug, and she’ll be there to say goodbye before Clove leaves for the capitol.
just realized that this actually works as a prequel to my other clove request, which is dare i say iconic. also anon you must know that if you offer me a chance for angst i will never turn it down! !

If someone were to listen to the gaping cavity in your chest, you think they’d hear the thud of a throwing knife against a target instead of regular heartbeats. It certainly feels like that, at least; you must have spent hours in the training room just today, and that’s not even mentioning every other day in your past and future.
That’s how it must be, though. Someone has to train until they’re as close to perfection as a human being can get. Someone has to be able to kill twenty-three other tributes until they’re the only one left standing. Someone must do all this, and that someone must be Clove.
The idea of prepping your girlfriend for the arena is somewhat morbid, but it’s not as if you truly had a choice in the matter. Clove made you swear to help her when you were small, and you’ve never been able to hold her in anything less than your word. If you really think about it, what you’re doing here is saving her, not damning her. By ensuring that Clove is as good as she could possibly be, you do all you can to keep her alive when she’s finally beyond your reach as a competitor.
Besides, it’s the least you can do. You won’t be in the Games, after all. Your name is not in the Reaping, nor has it been any of the other years you’ve technically been eligible. That’s the way it went for your father, and for his father before him. The Capitol does not like sparing any of the districts from the Hunger Games, but for a family they need in Two, certain exceptions were made.
The first lesson your family taught you was how to make yourself important. You should always have debts owed to you, favors that need to be paid off. That’s how you stay alive, how you stay out of trouble, and, most importantly of all, how you ensure that your name will never be called to participate in the Hunger Games.
In a place like District Two, where volunteers are commonplace, taking part in the Games is a source of pride. Lurking in the back of everyone’s mind, though, is the sickly truth that they’re not an honor but a chance to die. Sure, you could win it, and earn your family honor and respect, but you could lose the Games and have your life ended before you even saw twenty.
Your family knew that they needed to find a way to permanently stay out of the Reaping, so they played their cards right during the war and it paid off. Your family closely allied themselves with the right people in the Capitol, and so when the Hunger Games started, the leader of Panem made a rule that the names of anyone in your bloodline would never be called.
It was their only choice. Your family found a way to deeply involve themselves with the organization of the Peacekeepers. Without your relatives there to keep all of the branches interacting with each other in the best, most efficient way, the entire system would fall to pieces. There was a bit of dispute around that point when your grandfather was first running things, so he proved his points by stepping away. Nothing worked– the Peacekeepers in each district lost communication with each other and the Capitol in hours.
After that, they didn’t test you any longer, and your family was allowed to stay out of everything. It was an unspoken agreement that carried on no matter the leader of Panem, no matter the generation of your family. Your grandfather passed on the responsibility to your father, and you’ve been receiving the necessary training such that, when you finally come of age, you will be able to take it from him.
For the sake of pretense, all of you still entered your name on Reaping Day like everyone else, but the slips of paper would be removed before the ceremony began. That was to be expected, though. Divisions arise when people have a sense of inequality. If you want to stop the rebellions from arising, you reduce the visibility. You can’t grow outraged over unfair circumstances if you have no idea that the unfair circumstances exist at all.
To account for this, only the members of your family know that you’ll never enter the Reaping. You can play it off as good luck, and so long as you’re not obvious about it, no one will think twice about the fact that no L/N has ever entered the Hunger Games. Citizens are already distracted by the looming terror that one of their young ones could die within a month. No one’s tracking back your lineage to examine how many people you’ve lost.
You did tell one person, though. It couldn’t be helped. You and Clove tell each other anything anyway, how could you keep a secret like this? She made you swear to help her train years ago, but when the first year of Reaping eligibility finally started rolling around, Clove was confused as to why you weren’t training as vigorously as she was.
The answer you gave hesitantly, after consulting with various relatives to make sure you wouldn’t be damning most all of your loved ones. Clove took the news surprisingly well, actually. Maybe it’s because you were one fewer target that she had to take out. You were no longer a threat, which meant that you could instead be a friend. And then, later, you could be more. You could be someone she loved.
Loving her was inevitable. If you spend hours every day with another girl, if the two of you start sleeping over in each other’s rooms so as to not waste a single moment as the Games draw closer every year, if someone looked at you the way Clove did, of course you would fall. The falling was the easy part. Having to live with it was harder.
In the decades to come, you think you’ll look back on those years as the best of your life. Training always ramped up closer to the Games just in case; although Clove planned on volunteering when she was older so she’d have the best chance of a decisive victory, there was always the possibility that her name would be called before she was ready. Clove simply had to be prepared for anything, and so you cleared your schedule so you could help her out.
And so the days would pass, bleeding into weeks and months. You’d meet her at the District Two training center, or maybe the two of you would walk together. You learned combat for the sole purpose of being able to let her practice even better. You’d spot her while she was lifting weights, judge her form when she couldn’t watch her back, and do everything in your power to make sure she was going to win when the time came.
You have a thousand such memories stored in your head, of Clove throwing her first series of successive bullseyes and nearly tackling you to the ground from hugging you so hard; her exultant grin every time she could lift more, throw harder, do better; how she used to grab you around the waist with that mad laugh and tell you that she was going to do it all. You believed her, how could you not? How could you do anything but nod along, lost in her ferocity for life?
You loved her from the start, maybe. It was something you were born to do. You stood in her shadow and it did not darken your spirit, for it gave you the chance to watch her thrive and that would be enough for you, it always was. She was glorious. You were you. It had always felt uneven, but that was alright so long as you could just keep her.
The keeping her was the problem, though, as it would turn out. Clove wanted to volunteer, she always had. District Two raises golden tributes who can win better and faster than anyone else. Her end goal was always entering the Games so she could come out the other side with that title. It was her plan from day one, and you knew that, but somehow it still stunned you when she finally announced to you that it would be time to volunteer.
Your first reaction was disbelief. It was, of course, something that you were aware of the entire time, but it was wrong now. Clove volunteering was always something distant, an event that wouldn’t happen for years. It’s real now, though. It has always been real, but for once, you have to face it.
Selfishly, you had tried to talk Clove out of it, asking her not to volunteer. If her name was called, of course she would enter the Games anyway, but why put herself in unnecessary danger? You begged and pleaded, you asked her to stay out if not for her own life than for yours, but Clove just laughed and said you wouldn’t have to worry, because she would win. Of course she would win. There was no world in her mind in which she would die.
Still, you tried to persuade her otherwise. You still helped her train, but your enthusiasm flagged by the day. You were no longer protecting her from death, you were preparing her for her own demise. You encouraged this in her. You are to blame if– when– she dies. It will be her blood on your hands, and that will be something you will never be able to forget.
All of your attempts come to naught. The Reaping still comes, and although Clove has not promised you anything outright, you find it hard to believe that you’d be able to break through so many years of propaganda to make her realize that her life is worth more to you than her dying in the Games for glory that would only end up someone else’s. It doesn’t matter that you would put your family name on the line to keep her safe, this is what Clove wants, and you’ve known her long enough to recognize that it’s what she will get.
On Reaping Day, you find yourself lining up with the other District Two girls to learn who will become your tributes for the coming Games. You have never feared the Reaping; why would you, when you know for certainty that you and your family would always be safe? Now, though, your entire frame is wracked with terror. Either Clove’s name is called or she will put herself in. There is no way you win.
The designated representative from the Capitol takes to the stage, and then they reach their hand inside the glass vessel enclosing the names of all the eligible female contestants. The Capitol rep reads out a collection of syllables, and it is not Clove’s. You feel one wave of relief crash into you, and it takes everything in you to stay standing. That’s one possibility eliminated, at least.
You look over at Clove and you feel sick to your stomach, all confidence from before evaporating just as quickly as it came. She’s got that look in her eyes again, and you know what’s coming before she can form a single word. This is how it ends, then. This is how you lose her.
And then, at the very last moment, someone else could volunteer before Clove. The fate of the female tribute from District Two would only be decided because someone else was able to raise their voice faster than your girlfriend. It would be so easy for everyone to brush off the whole affair. It’s what they expect to see, after all. There’s a brilliant Career volunteering, and maybe it wasn’t Clove, but it’s still one of their own.
You, though? You were watching. It would be so simple if Clove just waited. It would have been just a half second’s pause, but it would be enough. No one would know. No one would have known but you. A thousand intricacies in one poorly timed breath, and Clove would stay alive. Easy as that.
But then Clove tugs the other girl down, shoves a hand over her mouth before she can scream, and yells that she will volunteer. This is not your imagination. This is not all the scenarios you can conjure up in your own head. Clove will never back down, and so despite your best attempts, you will never be able to escape this.
Clove is in the aisle before you know what’s going on. She’s marching towards the stage with that determined gaze she’s always worn so well. The Capitol citizen asks Clove her name and she answers, her hand is raised, the crowd cheers. You stare at her in horror, and she grins proudly. This is what she’s always wanted. You knew she would get it.
You find her afterwards. Tributes are allowed to say their goodbyes, and your family knows you enough to make room for you once they tell her to win. Your fingers find holds in her clothes, and you beg Clove to find some way out of this. Say it was a mistake. Say you said the wrong name, that you took the chance from another volunteer. Find some way to come back to me.
Clove would never listen. It’s all in her hands now, and you can see the excitement building in her chest as she thinks about it more. In moments, she will board a train to the Capitol, and then she will win the Games and you will be sorry for doubting her. Clove has dreamed of this while you were dreaming of her death. She knows exactly how this will play out.
Clove leans over to you, says I’m doing this for both of us, and then she’s across the room in the blink of an eye, telling the Peacemakers that she’s ready to go. The last sight of her is the vicious, glimmering girl you’ve always known, and then the doors slam shut behind her and she is yours no more.
You see her die when you’re least expecting it. She made it past the initial bloodbath, past the splitting of the Careers, past all the twists and turns of fate. You honestly thought she would win by that point, even though Cato was still in it. Clove had told you privately once that she would kill any of the other Twos were they to be her fellow tribute, no matter how strong an ally. She would never hesitate, and she would win. You believed her.
Clove doesn’t get the chance to prove herself right or wrong. She dies trying to kill Katniss Everdeen, that revolutionary from District Twelve. Clove was taunting her, taking her time about the kills. It was a mistake, and it haunts you to know that’s what her district will think of her. They won’t remember her bravery for joining the games, they’ll point out that one flaw in her perfect game to their children so the next generation will be even better.
You miss her night and day. You still expect the Capitol trains to bear her back to you when the Games are over, and it takes your brain some convincing to realize that Katniss and Peeta won the Games this round, not your lover. She’s yours no longer. She’s yours forever. Yours and that of the cold, dark earth in which you buried her empty casket. The grass grows over it now, thick and green. You knot your hands in it when the going gets tough and you scream at her for leaving you. She never answers.
It sickens you later, poisoning your mind against everything you’d ever held dear. This was their golden girl, their Clove, and when she died, they all tossed her aside like a bloody rag doll. She gave them everything and they can’t even remember her properly.
Another war comes soon. It brings rebellion to your very doorstep. Soon enough, they find you, and tell you that there are ways to help their cause. If you were not so foolish to admit it, you think you might even be listening.
If you were to do it, you’d do it for her. Clove always taught you to never back down. You think of her, and you enter the fray.

Another thing I hate about Hawks killing Twice is that usually when someone on the side of good does something like actually killing someone, there're consequences.
Like the character loses respect from their peers, they start to think badly of them, their image is tarnished and now the character has to find a way to prove otherwise.
But here with Hawks? He loses nothing.
He's still seen as a hero and no one gets onto him for murdering a potentially mentally ill person. And when the twice clones do show up... he literally has no reaction to it and what he's done.
It all really solidifies the glorification of heroism and that they really can do whatever they want and get away with it, from family abuse to literal murder.
Hori REALLY needs to learn that in order to make themes and plot points like these work, there needs to be actual consequences and backlash.
Hi @theloganator101 👋
Exactly. Exploring consequences to things that happen in his story is something that Hori does really poorly but this is especially shown and salt is rubbed into the wound here with what happened to Twice.
Personally speaking, I liked Twice. He was funny, a sympathetic villain and someone who really could have used a hero reaching out to save him (like how other heroes are reaching out to save his friends at the moment - Touya, Toga and Shig.) So to see this character who fell into villiany through a combination of bad luck and mental illness - who has been canonically shown to be easily manipulated time and time again reach his end by - being manipulated one last time. Being outmatched by Hawks (who he considered a friend) be quite literally stabbed in the back by him. That was already a very bitter pill to swallow.
Hawks lost me after that. He showed no guilt for killing Twice, he looked very cold during his press conference and not one of the press doubted his actions.
No one - not even the other heroes despite the no kill order heroes have - looked down on Hawks for murdering a mentally ill man. A villain who was clearly outmatched by him. And thanks to his double agent gig, Hawks could have knocked out and took to prison easily at any time Twice's back was turned.
He didn't lose his wings - or even his looks despite being burnt to shit by Dabi. All he's got is one new facial scar, shorter hair and being briefly unable to talk for a time. Hawks legitimately got NO long lasting consequences for murdering Twice in cold blood. And this angers me.
Hawks used Twice's memory (who he calls in his head by his first name in a very entitled move) to justify supporting a known child abuser who abused one of Twice's friends into villiany (lmao fuck right off Hawks.) Then from that point his 'guilt' is forgotten - Hawks evolves into an Endeavor bootlicker to an extreme degree so much so Endeav's shoes must be constantly shiny. It's just sad and pathetic to see.
Even Toga at the moment is too busy having an identity crisis to use her Twice clones on anything more distinctive than "Kill all heroes" or on having a identity crisis.
She is meant to have been Twice's best friend.
Honestly how I would have improved this arc would have been by:
Narrowing down the Twice Clones focus to "DIE Hawks!" as Toga's identity crisis takes place. Meanwhile, having Hawks look distraught at the fact that Twice's clones are back. He killed a good guy for nothing and have him constantly evade Twice clones taunting him for having killed him.
If I were in Hori's shoes I would have done that instead of having Hawks fighting AFO. AFO vs Hawks had no personal undertone. It was a fight I didn't care for other than lowkey wishing AFO would kill / actually maim Hawks the entire time.
Meanwhile, Twice Clone army vs Hawks that would have been juicy and made this arc 10x more interesting.
TLDR - Hori dropped the ball hard with Hawks character and the impact of Twice's death. I feel like this comes down to Hori writing what he wants and if the consequences of the plot point he wants to explore is something he deems uninteresting (Midnight's death) or doesn't want to explore (Twice's death, Endeavor's child abuse) - logic be damned - he just doesn't.

Act 3 Fumbles in the Todoroki arc
The decision to keep Endeavor alive with no clear narrative plan came with some terrible writing fumbles in Act 3 of the Todoroki arc which walked back previously established themes and failed to deliver on certain set-ups.
Off-screening Rei's reunion with Shoto.
Saving Rei from the hospital was Shoto's starting line back in Ch 44. After 250+ chapters of visits and letters, it was a huge milestone for him to see her out of the hospital and would have deserved a proper highlight and dialogue. Yet it was off-screened in favor of Endeavor getting the reunion scene.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
2. Spreading the blame for Toya to Natsuo and Fuyumi who are victims and children themselves
In a clunky attempt of parallels between the passive civilians of hero society, Natsuo and Fuyumi incomprehensibly are being framed as part of the blame for Touya's escalation.
Tumblr media
3. Walking back the Act 2 narrative of all victim responses are valid in favor of "it's heroic to prop up your abuser"
Instead of having Hawks feel bad about killing Twice, he was used as a prop to call into question the victim's right to walk away by making it seem as if he's done something wrong by cutting off the parents who abused and sold him.
Shoto's choice is valid, but he shouldn't be pitted against other victim responses.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
4. Focusing only on Endeavor's side of the fall-out for the scandal, while off-screening the impact on Shouto and only making coy references to it
It's convenient to hide the implied backlash at Shouto. Since his feelings never matter in relation to his family. His POV conveniently focuses on his friends helping him.
Tumblr media
5. Endeavor failing to step up for his family gets excused constantly, and turning everyone into Endeavor's cheerleader, while not having anyone anything to say about the abuse.
This was personally for me awful to watch how Hori kept using characters to shill for Endeavor, and did not make a single effort at an honest condemnation.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
6. Endeavor never delivers on becoming a father - in fact, Shouto spends Act 3 playing parent to Endeavor and carrying his burden and his arc of emancipation is invalidated as he gets no real choice
Shoto's arc was about freedom to decide who he wants to be. The emancipation cannot really happen though. He is bound by Endeavor's abuse, toxic legacy and past. While his peers rise into incredible heights, Shouto is condemned to pick up the pieces after Endeavor fails to step up.
Endeavor's arc was leading to a moment where he would choose to be a father over a hero. The moment never comes. Endeavor breaks every promise he made to the family, his solution for Touya is to kill him and has to propped up and saved by his victims throughout Act 3. He never gives them anything.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
7. Endeavor gets a bonus fight he doesn't need then sits back and waits while all the victims step up to save him and Toya. He gets no consequence at all for breaking his promise to the family since it would invalidate Shoto's arc of "family hero".
See above. Endeavor's fight with AFO is cool aesthetics and lots of internal pain. What it doesn't do is to step up for the family.
8. Shouto's fight in 352 has a clear narrative vision and strong, beautiful visuals, yet it gets invalidated for Round 2 which is a mess of short chapters that need heavy revision.
I'm convinced 352 was the original ending for Shouto vs Touya. It has a strong visual and great focus on their themes as brothers.
Tumblr media
9. By contast, Todoroki Shoto: Rising in fact in the weekly version had not a single strong visual for Shouto
Clearly Hori had no idea what point he wanted to make about Shouto. We don't really learn anything new about him - he steps up when Endeavor fails, like every time before. I'm still incredibly angry about this fumble. In fact, Hori doesn't really know what to do with this Todoroki family which has to embrace its abuser in order to save its "villain" without the abuser ever stepping up or giving anything back to the family and especially to Shouto. Even the masterpiece line which could be read as a reproach to Endeavor is scrapped.
Tumblr media
10. Ending the Todoroki climax on Endeavor's word is an awful disservice to Shouto as a character, which is why I fervently hope this is not the end for Shouto who deserves much better.
He doesn't even get to say anything.
Tumblr media
By keeping Endeavor alive without a plan, Horikoshi couldn't stick the landing of the Todoroki arc.
Sure, he has some cool visuals, but the overall message is terrible. In Act 3, the victims take on the burden of the abuser who keeps doing the same thing as he's always done: run away and play hero.
To make matters worse, the narrative is at most half-hearted in calling Endeavor out for this, and rather uses characters to shill for his heroic qualities.
The rebuilding of the family is hangs on the victims (apart from Touya) never getting to voice their feelings. In order to heal, not only they have to save their villain, but they have to embrace their abuser, who in turn doesn't have to do anything for them.

Everytime I see small Keigo I can't help but think of how lonely and heart it must have been to go through everything he did alone. With no siblings to lean on to, no one to hug this hurt little kid when things were tough. When his parents treated him badly, no one there to comfort him and tell him how good he actually was, how he didn't deserve to be yelled at.. hit at... Someone who got his back, someone who would have stood up for him and telling how amazing and caring kid he was. Imagine him having a older sibling he could trust and open up to. Someone who would have told him how brave he was going outside, saving all those people he didn't even know! Despite knowing he could get into trouble he still did what he believed to be right.
Imagine if instead of only his Endeavor plushie he actually had someone there to hug and protect him, reminding him not to listen to his parents bullshit, he wasn't stupid, he wasn't just waste of space or time and he definitely was worth more than what his wings could offer.
Just gfhghfh
As a parentified older daughter with many younger siblings I literally end up crying thinking how hurt and lonely he must have been, only child in a shitty home that could barely offer a roof on top if his head if even that.
Aaaa I want to adopt him lmaoo. Let him just be a kid and listen to everything he had on his mind. I would let him ramble about heroes and how much he loved Endeavor and heroes. Seeing the moment he realized he and other heroes in fact were real!
Imagine if he got adopted by loving people instead of the HSBC where he could freely express himself. He would definitely still want to so good, save people like he had been saved. The kid got a pure beautiful heart and I would listen to him talking about wanting to become someone like that too, someone like Endeavor. How he would grow up to be a hero 100% by his own choice, not forced to listen just another orders to fulfill. Not someone just used for others own gain, knowing his worth and being free.
Having someone there to remind him he was worth much more than what he could offer for others. Supporting him through the path he would choose and telling him how proud they were of him.
He was just a little kiiiid. Having to go through all that hard training.. I just want him to be able to be a normal kid doing normal kid stuff and meeting people his age and just having fun. If he grew up in a more loving stable home he would definitely have much more than his little Endeavor plushie. He would probably have a room filled with Endeavor stuff lmao and I love that for him <3
He's a kid with lots of wonder and curiosity, and I want him to be able to learn about world and explore it in a safe supporting environment. Playing video games while eating home made cookies and stuff.
Going to amusement parks and seeing kids and people smile on their face. Feeling warm how he could experience these things too, watching other families having fun and realizing just how different he had been treated. Despite feeling little sad things couldn't be like this with his real parents at least now he didn't have to worry about that anymore. Having stable loving home and people who supported him and made him feel warm safe and welcomed.
I want him to have a place he could invite his friends and play with, do different things and be carefree.
I just want the little Keigo to have much more than what life has given him okay 😭
Kids make me cry okay? I want to hug them and tell them everything's going to be okay. When I see little Keigo I can't help but think what if that was my younger brother. All alone without no one 😭😭 Makes me cry everytime it breaks my heart. I want to protect that pure heart and let him be free to express himself. I would fight to keep it safe 😤
Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
Keigo needs a warm safe hug❤️🥺😭

Do you think Endeavor will die trying to save Touya or helping Shoto save him? It makes sense for his character being afraid of dying like his father did to only end up the same way and Endeavor being dead also would bring peace to Touya and release him from his obsession on Endeavor. What do you think the ending will be for the Todoroki family? I just want Touya to be happy and not love that awful person that is a failure of a father anymore because loving Endeavor is only poison imo
My feelings about this aside, I see Enji surviving the manga and stepping in as a father only in the aftermaths of this war.
I don't think that the trope of redemption through death works to address Enji's remaining loose ends, because I don't think it's compatible with the resolution that Touya's arc needs.
Touya needs distance from his father to finally explore who he really is, true, but he also needs closure with his dad.
So far, the set up is that Shouto and Enji will have to work together to save Touya:
Tumblr media
But the thing is, Enji is not yet written as someone who's ready to do his part. In fact, he kept avoiding Touya in the war itself, enough so that Touya had to chase him down to get that closure.
This tells us that Enji isn't yet in a mindframe where he can contemplate Touya's needs, let alone act on them, act in his son's best interest. Endvr entered this second war with the mentality of a hero.
Tumblr media
He's still thinking in terms of how many heinous crimes Touya committed, and thinking of him in abstract terms. Here you can see it most clearly: the mention of Touya doesn't bring up memories of a family member, or even of a person; he's depersonalized into a receipient of Enji's regrets and inadequacies as a number one. When Enji thinks of him, he doesn't see the boy he wanted to have survived the Sekoto blaze, he sees the crimes Endvr should've been able to prevent.
This mindset won't change simply because Touya now appeared before him, demanding his attention. If anything, I see this making Enji feel backed into a corner, pushed to make a choice when he's not yet ready to acknowledge Touya's humanity.
My current prediction is that Enji will fail to acknowledge Touya as Touya, and only face Dabi the villain, until Shouto realizes why this approach won't work and lead the way for a change of pace. So far, neither Enji not Shouto have been successful in "stopping Dabi", and that's precisely because they're stuck approaching him as the family's black sheep, the sum of Enji's mistakes, the consequence of Enji's stubbornness. They need to think of Touya as a person and as a victim first, or their approach will keep failing. What makes Touya a villain is the fact that he felt shunned and abandoned by his kin. If Enji died before he could correct that and show Touya a real change, then I don't think Touya's arc would reach its necessary closure. Touya would simply lose his purpose once again.
But the thing is, Enji's not yet into a place where he can help Shouto save Touya, either, because Enji and Shouto approach him with completely different attitudes. Shouto sees someone he can relate to ("he is me") and someone who is family ("Touya-nii"), so even if he currently doesn't understand Touya's methods and is stuck perpetrating the scapegoating, he does have the set up to eventually sympathize enough to reach a common ground with him. Enji, however, not only still sees Touya as someone to defeat ("a mass murderer" "I cannot fight him"), but also as an abstract evil who is inhabiting the body of who was once his son ("my mistakes took form as Touya and stole so many futures").
So I think Enji will realize why resorting to his hero persona to solve problems won't work only when he sees Shouto approaching Touya as his brother. Then, and only after that, I can see him realistically step up as a father and finally give Touya the closure he needs, acknowledging him as a dad who loves his son, and not a hero who captures a villain. Right now, Enji's too stubbornly focused on soothing his guilt with a work success to begin to acknowledge the needs of others. Hence, death wouldn't accomplish anything. What he needs is growth, and since he's so resistant to it, resistant to admitting his flaws, the only way I can see him growing is if he clings to his methods and fails first, and is then shown a better way by the only son he ever paid attention to, and finally eat his pride and follow in his example. I think Enji needs to acknowledge that he never contemplated a scenario where he could mend things without violence,
Tumblr media
And frankly, I think that would be a nice way to make amends to Shouto, too, but this time for real.
Two birds with one stone.

031: Surprised by what he felt from Todoroki, thinking it was similar to All Might's spirit (similar pressure), Todoroki calls Deku aside and reveals him the secret of his family and why he never wanted to use his fire side. i am. so tired of fans misinterpreting bakugou. i have legitimately seen someone argue not only that he hasn't changed at all since the start of the manga (bc that's somehow still a common argument) but that his apology doesn't even count as character development bc he "did it with narcissistic intent." can we please have a fandom that knows how to read im begging.

I can sorta understand the selfishness angle, but only in the sense that Katsuki wants their relationship to get better because he wants to be with Izuku, and even then, this is not something that impacts the tone of what he actually expressed, because he said, "I don't expect things to change between us."
I firmly believe that Katsuki learned about real atonement through the Endeavor internship, regardless of how you may feel about Endeavor himself. As Katsuki said, he came there to learn what he couldn't do. What he was actually missing turned out not to be about his skills as a fighter after all. There are several scenes where we see him closely observing the Todoroki family and reflecting: when he sees Endeavor break down in front of Natsuo, when he overhears Izuku talking about forgiveness, and when he sees Fuyumi thank Izuku for being a good friend to Shouto.
Katsuki learned humility, he learned not to make it about himself, and he learned not to expect anything in return, all while containing his jealously and hope for forgiveness. I also can't agree with the idea that he was "all talk no walk." Whoever said that was superficial in referring to Katsuki's continued abrasive behavior, because if you focus on his actions, you can see that he has supported Izuku ever since their fight at Ground Beta. Not to mention he has had two near death experiences for Izuku's sake. What more could you ask for? Seriously.
Izuku's lack of perspective on the apology, like you said, makes a lot more sense when you factor in Horikoshi's habit of drawing out their development and saving stuff for a later date. It's a slow burn. I can't confirm that with anything other than my intuition at this point, but I'm sure we'll see Izuku's point of view very soon, it just won't be what antis are hoping for.
