Wow. DS9 ep "Profit and Lace" (6x23) DID NOT age well. So much transphobia, sexism, and misogyny in one episode. Cool, gender reassignment surgery is an easy thing. Sure, there's the underlying women's rights storyline. Of course, there are peppered in moments of silly that we've come to love from Ferengi storylines. But the use of "drag" as a joke, the cracks on women's hormones causing emotional instability. And let's not forget the attempted sexual assault and the episode starting with Quark threatening a waitress with termination if she doesn't sleep with him. Which is bookended with her being ok with it. Really?

Hi! TWS-anon here!
I've been taking a break from tumblr/tech in general, but I finally watched the new episode yesterday! I was *shocked* at how quickly that pirate[?] situation wrapped up. I TOTALLY thought it was gonna turn into a bigger thing. Hilariously anti-climactic (positive). I love this show so much!!!
Of course the Bobby/Athena moments were exquisite, and I felt so bad for Lola's husband. After everything they went through, she CHEATED on him!? TERRIBLE!!!
I felt so bad with Hen's call being second-guessed. I'm glad that everything worked out on her end. A little scared about the fallout from chasing Athena and Bobby's cruise ship, but considering that she's CORRECT, I hope it's not too bad.
Affectionately, I could not take any of the ship tossing around scenes seriously because all I could think of is my beloved Star Trek.
If I could, I'd send you a warm drink and a snuggly blanket, or a cool drink if you're too warm <3

asjdbfjskskjdk out of everything in that bonkers episode (affectionate) the thing that shocked me most was definitely lola’s infidelity. like. man. after he promised to visit her every day in prison? i thought they really had something :/
also man, as a bathena fan…..this episode really was something else 🥺 ep 1 left me a little worried but this one made up for it a thousand times over and also ruined me in the best of ways. that moment where bobby went underwater to lift athena up so she could breathe? yeah. it wrecked me. and i’m gonna be thinking about the shot of their wedding rings as they turn open the wheel for the rest of my life 😭😭
re the pirates. i don’t know if you count trailers as spoilers, but if so — spoiler under the cut!
i don’t know too much about the new ep but i’m 99% sure that we see the pirates again in the promo for 7x03, so the anticlimactic feeling you got after ep 2 was probably a false alarm!!

Yes, It’s Been Half A Decade Since TFA Was Released

Five years already?  Geez!
If you’ve been following my humble Tumblr blog since the beginning, you’ll know I was not truly a Reylo until I saw TLJ.  Before then, I was dealing with a movie that left me with a lot of mixed feelings.  Why?  I missed George Lucas for one thing.  He has an indelible style that few can match and few really cared about that universe and its characters as much as he did.  I was very unhappy to hear a month before TFA’s release that Disney tossed out his story and came up with something he didn’t really like very much (as later confirmed in Bob Iger’s memoir).  As a long-suffering prequels fan I didn’t like either the vaguely anti-prequel tone the pre-release hype took.  Whatever you do in life, don’t disrespect the man who created the GFFA. 
The post-release hype probably annoyed me even more.  Remember the doofuses screeching on t.v. that it was the best SW movie since TESB?  LOL.  (No, that would be ROTS and the only thing that came close since was TLJ.)  I hated that a movie I felt was flawed not only got passes from the media that really trashed Lucas and everybody who worked on the prequels, but also got lavish Best 10 lists and award nominations.  I was one bitter chickie for a while and later got a good laugh out of the backlash.
I thought it would be funny to post what I thought at the time, with added commentary:
Oh yes, the movie. My mother called it…it’s good, we all enjoyed it and were entertained, but Lucas’s touch is definitely missing. The romantic epic sweep of Eps I-VI, the goofy and whimsical touches, the feeling of being immersed in another galaxy, and Lucas’s gift for aesthetics aren’t there. The visuals don’t have that beauty and some of it is kinda ugly. The creature designs just aren’t as good. It’s not the kind of movie you watch dozens of times to catch little things. Even John Williams doesn’t have a knockout track like “Duel of the Fates” or “The Imperial March.” But it’s hard to think of how this was ever going to live up to any of it any more than I’d expect Suzanne Collins to write a Narnia book as good as C.S. Lewis. We lost those things when we lost Lucas.
I like the visuals a lot more now but TLJ’s cinematography rules the ST.  Still feel the same about creature design; I see better aliens and creatures on The Mandalorian.  One weird thing about the ST is how the filmmakers seemed to have avoided putting in anything at all that we’ve seen before.  No Jawas, no Togrutas, no Twi’leks, no Zabraks, no Quarren, etc.. Just Chewbacca and Admiral Ackbar.
The music didn't leave much an impression on me at the time but now I love “Rey’s Theme,” “Kylo Ren’s Theme,” and “March of the Resistance.”
As long as we’re on that note, I’ll get to the film’s flaws first. The movie has a lot of snappy, arch, and funny dialogue but you can tell the script was cranked out in a hurry. It lacks the careful structure of its predecessors and cribs a little too much from ANH. Poe disappears and you are led to believe he’s dead then he suddenly shows up healthy and hale with no explanation. Abrams’s first Star Trek film was riddled with unbelievable coincidences and unfortunately this movie has some of those too, such as when Han and Chewie just happen upon the Falcon in space. The film does very little to set up what’s going on and why, such as why the hell is the Republic fighting the same a-holes after all of these years. Abrams prefers instead to keep the action going instead of doing much exposition, which is pretty much what he did with the Trek films. Those little moments in Lucas’s Star Wars films don’t happen much here. Things must always be occurring, which dumps all of the responsibility for character development and world building on Rian Johnson and Colin Trevorrow. I have no idea why they decided to be all teasy-weasy with who Rey’s parents are instead of just telling us. (I suspect Luke is her father.)
LOL!   I guess the adoption by proxy thing at the very end of TROS proved me right or...did it?  Yes, my first assumption after seeing TFA was that Rey and Kylo Ren were cousins.
As for the rest of it, I still feel the same.  Rushed script, borrows too much from ANH, precious few explanations/set-up, not as good structure but still full of humor.
BB-8 is a charmer, Finn and Rey (who are so going to hook up) HA!  But remember I thought Rey and Kylo were cousins! have some charm and potential growth as characters, and it was great seeing our old crew again even if not under ideal circumstances. (Personally I would’ve preferred NOT to have broken up Han and Leia.) Hux had some mustache-twirling moments and Abrams was at least smart enough not to kill off him, Ren, or Snoke just yet. Finn and Poe have a good rapport (maybe they’re going to hook up).
Stormpilot definitely pinged the slash-dar.  It was completely unsurprising to find fans shipping them.
Abrams seemed to have avoided the mistake James Cameron made in “Avatar” when he killed off his most threatening villain while planning sequels. As you might have guessed, I was really shocked at Snoke’s death in TLJ.  I wasn’t expecting that until IX.  I was also really shocked at the casual, quick-get-rid-of-him ways both Hux and Ben were killed off in TROS.
The most compelling aspect of TFA for me was the Skywalker family drama, which made me wish it was more up front rather than a subplot. Ben Solo/Kylo Ren is a conflicted guy with a huge chip on his shoulder and it makes you wonder exactly what happened to him because I think he may have mental issues. Leia knows there’s still good in him but can a guy who commits patricide be saved? (RIP Han…I so knew this would happen because I figure it was the only way Ford would’ve done another film). Can his cousin/half-sister or whatever Rey save him? Would she want to? With Luke back in the picture and Artoo activated again, what will happen next? Even though they split up Han and Leia I liked the banter between them; it’s sad because they clearly still loved each other.
This is still true for me.  A few days after posting this it struck me just how nihilistic TFA was because I found Han and Leia’s split unnecessary (had Han gone out for Chinese food or on a mission for the Resistance instead of just being a loser smuggler, it wouldn’t have changed anything that happened in the film) and what I thought was Kylo’s certain fate to be a narrative bummer.  TLJ made me think they weren’t going on that direction only to be proven right in TROS (sadly).
I’ll dispense with the stupid Snoke is Plageuis theory and my dad wondering if Finn was Mace Windu’s lost son or something, though I’ll give him half a point for Finn turning out to be Force-sensitive after all.
I don’t know why people have said this takes them back to the ’70s because the film really is a 2015 movie made for an audience reared largely on the MCU, YA flicks, and other staples of contemporary geek culture. It is what it is and we aren’t going to get back the films of George Lucas and his influence. TFA might not be an awesome Star Wars movie but it is at least a good sci-fi action flick.
I still stand by most of this.  Time and TLJ made TFA a better movie in my eyes.

Farscape rewatch s1e06 Thank God It’s Friday... Again
Oh yes, another one of those episodes that bored me on the first watch. But this time around, it actually wasn’t so bad?
After all the Star Trek I watched, this episode felt similar - the crew comes to a planet that has a specific problem and they kind of help out the people there solve it. The exception here is that Moya’s crew isn’t Starfleet and it’s not their mission statement to help out anyone they come across. They just have to because of their own circumstances (mainly they need to get back their crewmembers).
Also, I really don’t remember a Star Trek planet that had propaganda/brainwashing/agriculture problem like Sykar. That sounds more like SW lol. So this ep earns some points for the concept, but loses some because the execution is just so-so. Not very exciting.
So it all starts with D’Argo’s Luxan Hyper Rage which sounds a lot like his normal mode (lol), but then he goes to the planet and he changes completely his tune. I’m counting it as the first instance in which the crew is pulled into trouble entirely because of D’Argo.
Crichton is lucky enough to be contacted by the local resistance group which implants anti-brainwashing worm in him.
I guess the problem is slightly similar to the one from Tavlek episode, because of a mood-altering substances and how they make people content with their life. There is a question of happiness and how to reach it. D’Argo gets sad in the end because he thinks he won’t ever have a happy life :( but there’s hope when he talks with Zhaan about his dreams.
Nice that it all ties back to the Peacekeepers and their tyrannical ways.
I think my favourite part of the episode was Aeryn having to do science to help cure Rygel and figure out the main problem of the planet. It’s cool how she has to get out of her comfort zone and do something she’s not accustomed to. And she also gets to bond with Pilot :) Their friendship is one of the best in the show.

Disney’s handling has been imperfect, and some of the mistakes have been made the highest level (I know that people give Kathleen Kennedy a hard time, but if rumor is to be believed, some of the interference that made IX kind of weird came from higher than that)
for example, Kennedy said in an interview that she tries to find people who just make big, successful movies to make sure that these are also big, successful movies. I can understand that as being a safe bet from a business stand point, but that’s not the same thing as finding someone passionate about very specifically telling good, new Star Wars stories, which we did not really get in the Sequel Trilogy
(one of the most common theories that I saw from TLJ apologists was that people didn’t like that it was new/different than what they were expecting, which was really not the issue for me or my friends. Also it was just a speedrun of parts of Episodes V and VI)
I think that I’m “too close” to Star Wars to see it as a financial asset rather than a beloved universe full of characters and stories that I adore, but I don’t think that “literally just rehash the Original Trilogy for two movies and barely acknowledge any other part of Star Wars until IX” was a good idea
Rey deserved her own story. and Luke deserved to not be retroactively robbed of his

as for George Lucas, I do think that years of backlash over the Prequels sucked the fun out of it for him. Also, who doesn’t want four billion dollars? it was a sweetheart deal for Disney, of course
the sad thing is that this meant the end of Clone Wars, because Disney took one look at Lucasfilm’s budget and was like “OH NO YOU CANNOT SPEND THAT KIND OF MONEY ON A CARTOON” which is why Season 6 was paid for by Netflix and why Maul: Son of Dathomir was a comic

I love Star Wars Rebels and I’m not trying to knock the show at all, but the budgetary difference was palpable. Clone Wars did have it a little easier because of the Clone Troopers (all having the same face), but on Rebels, you notice that 90% of the Imperials are the same guy wearing a hat with his visor obscuring most of his face. market scenes show just a few people (but plenty of Storm Troopers)
the designs of the main characters -- Ezra, Hera, Sabine, Zeb, Kallus, Thrawn, Kanan, etc -- are great and loving and detailed and most of those change a little over time, but there’s a reason that we only see so many planets on Rebels. look at the huge armies and crowds in Rebels. my friend @drunkkenobi​ is the first who pointed out to me that in Clone Wars, you sometimes see lines of ships (Space Traffic) and each ship in line will be unique, distinct from the others
it’s not Rebels’ fault that they didn’t have that kind of budget. that’s also why their space battles (and space ships) never quite look right. meanwhile, for Clone Wars, if they wanted a particular scene or ship that went over their planned budget, all that they had to do was ask Uncle George

eccentric billionaires funding expensive media isn’t necessarily the most sustainable model for storytelling, but it sure worked out well for Clone Wars and for The Expanse
(Jeff Bezos personally called up the head of Amazon Prime programming, who had already been considering acquiring the extremely good but expensive show, and was like “hey the cast from this show is at a thing where I am, I’d love to just tell them that their show is saved, give me it?” and we saw as many new locations in Season 4 as we did in the first three seasons)
but streaming -- where you actually get money directly from customers who then, through their activity on your platform, show you exactly what they want to see aka what is keeping them on your platform -- offers a new opportunity for high quality genre media. remember, scifi and fantasy were EVERYWHERE in the ‘90s and the early aughts, and then because too expensive for regular TV unless they had huge audiences. only through streaming do we have these new Star Treks, The Witcher, and the real possibility of a new Stargate series

The Mandalorian goes to show that Disney can 100% do good Star Wars. Rebels was good, despite its budget, but can you imagine how much better it would have been if it had aired on Disney+
as with the DC movies (three of which are good and I’m also excited for Birds of Prey), the solution to the our-movies-made-a-lot-of-money-but-aren’t-strictly-speaking-good is literally just “let the people who do the cartoons make the movies”

and now we’re getting a final, seventh (half) season of Clone Wars! twelve episodes looking better than the show has ever looked!!
if you’re like me, you probably thought to yourself “gee, only 12?” and, cynically, you figured that it’s a trick -- announced at ComicCon in 2018 to build up the first wave of hype for Disney+
and it is ... but it 100% worked on me, I signed up for Disney+ and will pay anything for Clone War
my HOPE is that this is a test run to see if people really like high-quality animated Star Wars stories enough to continue with it. there’s only so much clone wars that one can cover (my suspicion is that we will see Ahsoka fake her death during Order 66 in these eps, so yep, that’s the end of the Clone Wars right there)
imagine a well-written series with everything that Clone Wars had in terms of content and visual quality, but it’s set after Episode IX. to my frustration, IX ends with effectively the same worldstate as VI which essentially means that nothing much happened in the Sequel Trilogy. but imagine a series set after IX. we could see a new set of (Force-wielding) characters. we could see Rey, Finn, Poe, and Rose during some episodes. Rose could finally get to do something that’s not an insulting fool’s errand (she deserves so much better!!!!!)
we don’t need a new Big Scary Empire/First Order thing, just organized crime and pirates and Hutts and bounty hunters and individual planet systems going to war as the characters try to assemble a NEW New Republic (gods I hate the unchanged worldstate)

now, I know that Star Wars Resistance is not ... reassuring. this is the only screencap that I have from it because I couldn’t get into it. it’s not the animation (I enjoyed Tron Uprising and Iron Man: Armored Adventures and this is the same kind of deal), but three things:
-I watch Star Wars for the Force primarily; other stuff can be cool but I need the Force
-I will never care about ships racing and really I don’t care about an individual ship flying; I’m a Command Ship kind of space nerd
-apparently the writing doesn’t improve much during the first season. people tell the main character to not do something, then he does it, and disaster ensues. that’s ... it’s fine, it’s fine to exist as a show, it’s just not for me

obviously, not all Star Wars media is for me, but when something -- like TLJ or the Sequel Series as a whole (even though VII and IX are enjoyable) or Resistance -- disappoints me, I would never accuse it of “ruining Star Wars”
Star Wars is a whole franchise. the breadth of canon isn’t all wiped away by some disappointments. was the MCU ruined by Age of Ultron? no. it was a bad movie but from the same franchise that gave us The Winter Soldier and Thor Ragnarok. hell, Dawn of Justice doesn’t “ruin” Wonder Woman or Aquaman or Shazam. bad movies aren’t contagious
for the past several years, the Entitled Dude crowd has felt empowered. they were radicalized in the altright/redpill/MGTOW/meninist/nazi/gamergate/comicsgate/etc spheres of the internet and now they just have a reflex where they see any sort of representation and decry it as “SJW,” which they also seem to think is a bad thing
in the same way that well-meaning people on tumblr can get radicalized into being antis/puriteens, people with certain vulnerabilities on reddit or youtube can get sucked into a world that tells them that they are the default and that other people existing is “political” in media and in real life, and that people being upset by outright cruelty towards them is both funny and means that the cruel person is the victor. they need therapy and studios need to not listen to them
unfortunately, sometimes there are movies that are bad despite having things like solid representation. Ghostbusters 2016 was a delight, but my friends and I with whom I saw TLJ (all of us queer feminists) left the theater angry. we’ve bitten our tongues a lot (even if it seems otherwise) because publicly criticizing the film too often leads some incel monster to chime in with agreement, and we’re just like

the redpillgate crowed et all is a natural ally of conservative white evangelicals, even though the former group is generally made up of New Atheists (the short version is atheists who hold socially conservative views because racism/misogyny/transphobia benefit them without using christianity as an excuse). it’s kind of like how terfs will side with conservative hate groups because, though they’re natural enemies, they both despite trans people just for existing
unfortunately, when you’re looking at who went to see a movie or who hated it, not everyone posts with an ID card saying exactly their demographic. which is only going to make studios like Disney even more nervous about including queer content in Star Wars and in the MCU (I mean real queer content with characters whose names don’t have to be searched on a wiki)

I totally agree with this, it's not that I don't want criticism about series 11, because I know it has flaws but the discussion around it has been so full of vitriol that it's been off putting. Especially since I like to go out and search for meta and all I keep getting is condescending vitriol.
Exactly! Lots of shows have a form of neverending battle within fandom, like who is your fav Captain on Star Trek. And so with Doctor Who there are some fans who have this one absolute One True Doctor and nobody will ever measure up. And this consense of “we all hate this one ep and we all love this other”. And yeah, okay, so don’t touch a few points. But with Thirteen this reached a new height. It’s like you have to either be for or against her, no in-between. The moment you say “I like it, but the way this conflict was solved was a let down” antis will jump out “aHA, so you admit it’s not perfect, so it must have problems all over the place and DW was never this bad before”. ??????????????
I’m not that much of a fan of must of Twelve’s run. I don’t like how to me Clara feels like three or four characters rolled into one. But even when I felt somewhat meh about it all, I found dozens of little things to still enjoy. And I’d watch most eps again (not Kill the Moon though). There were still parts I did enjoy, although I just disregard the larger context of what happened before. I don’t need to pretend that the show was ever perfect before. Also S10 happened and it had me really fall back in love with the show. The missing spark came back and all is well.
Yes, Thirteen is different. Every Doctor is always a bit different. Has been this way since forever. And sorry that Chibnall had his big GOTCHA moment. When he said he’d go back to the roots, he went back all the way to One. And by having Thirteen be a woman we can see some of the flaws of time-travel-is-always-so-fun. Not so nice being dismissed, is it now? Three companions, a more family friendly approach, stand-alone adventures, not relying on epic moments that are only epic because of an established backstory... how could this be Doctor Who, right? ;)
It’s so frustrating how the middleground is lost. And it’s happening with a lot of (especially genre) shows. Happening to Star Trek Discovery too. omg there is so much I don’t enjoy about it, but also a lot I really love. I have my own criticism, but I’m not blind to the good stuff - and vice versa.
