The best part about writing slightly older characters is that you get to give them signs of aging!
Like, a character who's relatively young but has a very pronounced crease between their brows because of how often they frown? Tell me more! Being able to infer how stessful a character's life has been by how grey their hair is or isn't?? Hell yeah!! A character with very clear smile lines but who seems depressed all the time??? I wanna know about that!!!
You get these little things about them as first-impression, through casual description, and it immediately gives you some information about who they are or what life they've led. It really gets you thinking about them!
You can also have their backstories cover greater spans of time to either fit more stuff in or stretch events out. A character in their early 20's says something like "I've been studying these texts for 10 years" and I'm like "yeah dude whatever, you were 100% not studying ancient texts at age 13". A character in their 30's or 40's says that and I'm like "oh shit bro tell me more?? clearly you have some kind of personal investment in these texts!".
You get a lot more to work with! I just think age adds characterisation flavour!!

who's ready for the indigo disk, a $35 DLC required to finish the story the $60 base game of pokemon scarlet and violet started because corporate rushed it out too early, to not be allowed to acknowledge any of nemona arven and penny's virtues, deeper problems, and motivations, if not just outright contradict or mock them
who's ready to never have nemona hit level 100 or use EVs/held items, never make food with arven, never... uh... do anything fun with penny, never adventure with them again once the new story's over despite it being a coded and previously used feature in the game that introduced the union circle, never get to call anyone on the phone we supposedly have their numbers registered on, never get to do emotes together with anyone but other players, and never get to say what or who our own treasure was when nemona's was us
who's ready for the story to not acknowledge that ditching our friends but especially nemona to transfer schools to another country in pursuit of New Content, right after she basically opened up to us about her secretly being a horribly lonely neurodivergent disabled kid trying to fight her "gifted" label and we promised to be with her forever, would be extremely traumatizing
who's ready to still not have a real postgame without crowdsourcing it from other players with the internet connectivity that they're going to take offline a few years later
for my health, i must be prepared for all of these things rather than writing a big fluffy post getting my hopes up about how they're going to utilize some of the realest characters in pokemon (though i can do that too if you want)
especially when the company seems too afraid, secretive, or unprepared to advertise the damn thing and haven't shown or mentioned those three main plot driving characters again in the entire 9 months from DLC announcement to release as if they simply won't be in it at all (which is stupid, of course they will)
i just wanna see the rest of the beautiful story they were trying to tell before three year cycle hell made a bit of a mess of it and the cast suddenly vanished or became statues when we were just about to hang out and live happily ever after. i would've really appreciated the anime actually being about them, too (horizons isn't even really about Paldea lmao)

not to participate in cursed Phan Discourse in 2024 but here's my take on the whole Are They Gay Did They Fuck thing: phil going out of his way to avoid the "my boyfriend (32M)" asks rlly just puts into perspective that we don't have the agency to choose any label for their relationship. yes they're spending their lives together they bought and designed a home together CLEARLY they've got something very queer going on with each other, and i'm sure that us casually calling them husbands/saying they're dating is whatever, they really don't care they've said it multiple times by now. but someone not wanting to force a label on them just because they're obviously not just pals and they share a life yadda yadda and people acting like it's the same thing as calling them Heterosexual Men is.,,. a little weird methinks !!!! cause at the end of the day they really might not be dating. they might not like to define their relationship like that. maybe they do and they just don't care to share it, it doesn't matter, the point is that the possibility of them not "dating" in a conventional way is not less queer. it doesn't mean their relationship is anything less than they've repeatedly said it is. "trying to deny that they're dating is borderline homophobic atp" why do you think a Strictly Defined Exclusive Conventional Romantic Relationship is the only way to have a queer relationship, don't shit on others for not wanting to enforce that on two people whose private lives are none of our business.
