The-Lady-Reads-What
I'm a very slow reader, so I started reading this massive book back in May and just finished it today. This not on account of it being boring, far from it, it's just that I'm a very slow reader, I'm easily distracted, and I'm not really in the habit any more to read a lot of fiction novels for recreation as much as I used to.
Tasha Suri's "The Jasmine Throne" takes place in a fantasy world heavily inspired by South Asia. Priya, the main character, is a servant in the regent's mahal (palace). Her past is a mystery. She encounters Malini, a princess held prisoner in the temple by Malini's despotic brother, Emperor Chandra. Both young women learn to take power back for themselves in the turbulent world on the brink of rebellion and uprisings.
If you won't read "The Jasmine Throne" for it's diversity, then read it because it's good. The characters are highly complex, and some not afraid to do even monstrous things for the greater good. It's filled with family and cultural tensions, uprisings, fighting for power, and a dash of enemies-to-lovers romance. The world is beautiful, fantastical, and even just a little bit scary (as in you will be in awe of its strength). Suri is not afraid to the ugly side of politics, war, and personal decisions. I highly recommend this book.
I give this book 4 out of 5 stars
"The Jasmine Throne" sequel, "The Oleander Sword," has been out since August 16th and the finale to this series has not been released yet as far as I'm aware.

Hypothetically speaking, what would happen if Feralnette ended up in the Scarlet Lady timeline?

you want a new kind of guy, fine, i raise you: the lady i was briefly roommates with in college who once smoked a blunt at a party and then spent an hour confessing earnestly to me that she genuinely preferred reading detailed episode recaps over actually watching the tv show in question

Shirtless Disaster Pt2.
looklooklook Maybe every other Tav's Emperor was 100% prepared for that interaction, very knew-what-they-were-doing, very committed, SO VERY BOLD OF THEM
But Greygold's Emperor.....was not!
After witnessing with my own eyes that is shirtless squid buddy, I realized something. Squid buddy is a godsdamned silly goose trying to be too cool for school.
I just....I would reaaallly like to know the emperor's thought process for how they concluded that sitting next to your sleeping crush shirtless is a viable strategy for starting a conversation
NO REALLY- WHY IS THERE NO 'WHY ARE YOU SHIRTLESS' DIALOGUE CHOICE. WHY??????? The entire time the Emperor, with their squid tiddies out on full display, was casually talking, that question was the only thought running through my head. GIVE ME THE DIALOGUE OPTION, GAME, GIVE ME.
Such a silly moment. In conclusion. I had to make it more silly.
OKAY BUT ALSO, BEFORE ANYONE TAKES HUNGRY SQUID TOO SERIOUSLY. There's a book in the game. talks about tadpoles smelling like garlic after eating brains. and. Emps. smelled like garlic. so. and if you knock out the guards instead of kill, they disappear, SO. And Orpheus' brain is edible in here SO. so. why not a lil. why not a lil snackaroos. It was a funny thought to implement.

One thing that is not nearly discussed enough is the way that 16 year old catatonic Jason imprinted on Talia like a baby duck. Like can you imagine the image of Talia walking around the league base being followed by a mute dazed looking teenager and nobody’s allowed to say shit about it?

The episode’s title, “Egyptian Cigarettes,” refers to how the pictures of diseased lungs that many countries — but not Israel or the United States — depict on cigarette packaging display the consequences of potentially destructive choices. “To have a picture of those organs — these effects are really real,” Youssef explains. “When are we going to look at that photo? I view the Ramy character as a symbol of how complicit we are in the large scale of the world, even as we’re navigating our own small piece of it.”
And practically, “Egyptian Cigarettes” depicts the day-to-day obstacles — interrogations, detainments, checkpoints, the separation wall, a constant military presence — that the citizens of the Palestinian territories face every day, a stark reminder of the normalized harm of nation-states.
“You don’t have to really say anything else,” Jacir adds. “In terms of the shooting, the wall, the checkpoints; the fact that in reality, those boys are not allowed to get out of Jenin; everything about our reality. We didn’t have to say to anybody, ‘What is a military occupation? What is life like here?’ It just is.” - How 'Ramy' Centered Life in the Palestinian Territories
Ramy, S03E02: 'Egyptian Cigarettes' (2022). Dir. veteran Palestinian director, Annemarie Jacir. Written by Maytha Alhassen and Ramy Youssef.

cw: mentions of being on birth control, mention of maybe getting pregnant, scent kink
have you guys ever heard of like…..being attracted to someone’s smell which means you’ll pair together really well??? and there have been cases where people get off birth control and it intensifies the smell and either makes it completely unbearable or even fucking better for the person??? okay THAT but with Bakugou…….,,,
you’re on birth control for whatever reason, and you’ve always pretty much liked his smell. it’s always been distant scents of caramel, a little sharp twang of spice whenever he comes home sweaty. and usually, you’ll let him chase you around the house while you laugh about him needing a shower because he stinks—but it’s all in jest.
and maybe, after a couple years of being with him, you get off of it for whatever reason—you wanna get pregnant, or it’s not serving you anymore, or you just don’t wanna be on it for any longer. and there’s—there’s a certain shift in the air whenever you’re around him.
you feel like a fuckin cat in heat when you stand near him, always pressing your face against the slickest parts of his skin. your nose buried in his palms, pressing sweet and gentle kisses to the hardened skin.
and Bakugou doesn’t understand what the fuck is going on with you, or why you always want to lay in his armpit, but he doesn’t complain much. even when he catches you huffing his dirty workout tanks and wearing his already worn boxers around the house.
but you can’t help it!! you just wanna bathe in his scent—now slick and honeyed and cinnamon—until you pass out from forgetting to exhale. and you’re such a perv about it that he can’t help but tease you—for licking the sweat from his collarbones whenever he’s on top of you. for inhaling where his scent lays stronger on the skin beneath his balls. for burying your nose in his pits whenever he stretches in the morning.
calls you his sick little pervert, getting off to his sweat, tells you how nasty you are for liking something so depraved. but your shame has abandoned you—all you care about and crave is his scent covering you in every way, shape, and form.

I think everyone is doing Austria a disservice when they write him as a prudish blushing flower, and not as a manipulative bitch who has mastered weaponized sexuality. YES he's an uptight snob, but when you look at the history of Austria's military alliances there is a lot of calculated moves based around arranged unions instead of (or to subdue) all out wars. It's much more fun imo to see Roderich as someone who can seduce you into a strategic marriage for the sake of saving his own ass.

For research purposes, I'm reading Fifty Shades of Gray ironically. No, I'm not really enjoying it. For the first chapter I've already written down 5 pages worth of critique notes. Highlights from these notes include but not limited to:
Jesus, Ana get a headband (Ana tucks her hair behind her ear no less than 4 times in the first chapter)
Double crap? What are you twelve? Just say fuck. I'll even accept shit (Ana swears like a little kid too afraid to say the actual swear words. It's embarrassing)
"...and she's my dearest, dearest friend." This feels like sarcasm

The interesting thing about Jiang Cheng is that he refuses to be his mother's golden child to Wei Wuxian's scapegoat; he actively chooses Wei Wuxian again and again. He defends Wei Wuxian from her until she dies. It's unusual.
This doesn't mean that Wei Wuxian's experience was any less fraught--being hated by a caretaker is awful even if everyone else loves you. But it was an interesting choice by MXTX.
