Wait, since you HC Courtney as Salvadoran I wanted to share a funny little HC.
So, Courtney’s dad absolutely hates Duncan, but he’s willing to go a little easy on him when he’s over for dinner one night.
The meal for the night? Pupusas.
Duncan is so nervous because he already knows how much he needs to impression Courtney’s dad. If anything just to get him off his back for like 15 minutes.
Duncan’s like, “I’m gonna score so many brownie points” (or so he thinks), and grabs a fork and knife to start eating. He’s like “there’s no way he can hate my guts fully if I show some nice table manners.”
Meanwhile, Courtney’s dad is like, “why tf is this punk asshole using silverware!?”
“is he MOCKING us, mija?”

"people show their true colours in life threatening situations" no, they show you what they act like when they're mortally terrified, an emotion notorious for literally turning your entire brain off to the point where people who go into those situations as a profession need to be literally trained on how to not have that happen

"life doesnt get better, you just get stronger" does NOT include ages 11-17. life does in fact just get better from there. those years are dogshit. like, you do get stronger but its mostly just a factor of not being 11-17 anymore. positive thinking helps but it doesnt fix whatevers going on at 15, you have to brute force through that one raw

If my mom sees a significant amount of blood she gets lightheaded, and has fainted on some occasions. Once it happened when we were kids, I wasn't there to witness it but I heard the story from my dad. Basically my brothers, around 7 or 8 at the time, were playing outside while my mom was making their lunch, and she accidentally cut her finger. It wasn't anything serious, but it drew a fair bit of blood and she passed out. My dad saw this and rushed over, but he didn't really know what to do so he just sort of started slapping her to wake her up (not recommended, but he had no idea and panicked)
At that exact moment my brothers both came in from playing, and all they saw was our mom unconscious on the floor and our dad slapping her. So, like, without even saying a word to each other they both just INSTANTLY start whaling on him, like, full blown attack mode to defend our mom. Which obviously didn't help the situation, but she did wake up and everything was fine.
Now our dad says that he's actually really glad they attacked him over what they thought was going on, because it means he raised good boys. And I still think that's true, they're very good boys.

Fic authors self rec! When you get this, reply with your favorite five fics that you've written, then pass on to at least five other writers. Let's spread the self-love🫶🏻 😘
and i hope when you think of me years down the line
It’s stupid, really. A half-baked plan founded on the anachronistic John Wayne wet dream he swears he doesn’t have. She hangs on his every word like it’s the gospel and doesn’t remember her devout atheism until she’s staring down the barrel of the sheriff's gun.
five-year plan
She’s a harder habit to kick than the nicotine, the cocaine, and the arson combined. From ages sixteen to eighteen she is the center of his universe -- as self-destructive as it is, he can’t help but be trapped in her orbit. When he breaks her heart, he propels himself out of her gravitational pull and is finally able to put her in perspective.
girls girls girls
He doubts her piss guy is as good as she thinks he is. Duncan lets go of the dream of dying happy, high as hell and surrounded by girls with their tits out. He’ll have to settle for dying the old fashioned way— sober and lonely in some crappy nursing home as Gwen smothers him to death with a pillow.
like a house on fire
“Nah.” Duncan smirks. “You could do a lot better than me.” He takes a long, slow drink from his glass. His adam’s apple bobs. Courtney thinks that maybe she understands Eve.
summer of 87
The court-appointed therapist tells him that gaps in memory are part of the whole Deal— that trauma comes with its own baggage and erasing the past is the brain’s way of protecting itself. He tells the therapist that if that were true, he would’ve forgotten the shape and size of the hole in Damian’s skull by now; that if his brain cared enough to protect him, he wouldn’t have memorized every word of the note his brother left on the kitchen table; that if his memory were so damn fallible , he wouldn’t wake up in the middle of the night trying to wash the memory of Damian’s blood off his hands.
