one thing i am really enjoying abt rivers of london is peter grant's autistic curiosity. why DOES it work like that!!! i cannot engage with a Magic Is Real story without trying to work out the fundamental principles even if the story itself isn't remotely concerned with them, and im not saying every story should be concerned with them, i spend a lot of time suspending my disbelief very purposefully, but oh it is so nice to have the pov guy also be like. i noticed magic made technology break so i spent a full day doing controlled experiments about it

Au fics that i think are neat and that i want to compile into a list because im trying to figure out how to comment on a chapter of a fic but i need time to sort out my thoughts (usually for fic recs i try to rec fics with less kudos/engagement because reasons but im just gonna throw everything in this list. probably multiple fics by the same author in the same universe because thats the one im trying to sort out my thoughts on.)

the strawberries are dying by eggowlss - historical fiction and very interesting character relationships and also character exploration within the time period. I really like this one because the pacing and tone are very gentle. There’s a srt of ebb and flow to the story that makes both the time period and the characters really fit into it. idk how to describe it i just like it a lot.

in the quiet of the night (acswy ao3 series) - they’re putting those characters in situations. It’s a very good time. 10/10 do recommend. If you haven't heard of this one though, it’s basically a modern au where everyone works at a summer camp and Mike and Will cause problems for themselves, each other, and usually everyone else around them. 

si vis amari, ama by perexcri - demons and angels and heaven and hell and its honestly just one hell of a story. like ive got vivid images in my head of scenes i imagined when reading this. 

you start to kiss (and the record skips) by eclipseadventure - this is a band au with a side of a secret relationship and im a sucker for secret relationships. a bit of drama/high stakes in here too which is always pretty fun. 

End Racism on the OTW! - you and me and the horrible teenaged ghost who keeps eviscerating himself in our apartment makes three by TheWrongKindOfPC - i am also a sucker for buzzfeed unsolved aus. buzzfeed unsolved, hauntings, ghosts, yknow the fun stuff. 

into the daylight by andiwriteordie - THIS IS NOT THE FIRST ONE, it’s just the first one that came up in my bookmarks. anyways, this is the second fic in a fantasy au series. The worldbuilding is really cool and there’s magic and history and politics and i like it a lot. the most recent chapter is spinning around in my mind.

the heartbreak prince by andiwriteordie - THIS IS THE FIRST ONE. 

beneath these boughs, my devotion blooms by perexcri - this is the fic that nearly killed me. i literally cant summarize it because im still recovering from what happened to me when i read it. Did i read it in april? Maybe. Listen, it had me asking questions about things i had never considered before. its 11k but im pretty sure it took me a good few hours to read because it made me think about it so much. again, ive got a bunch of visuals running through my head. its just... so much.

sweetheart, you're so cruel by perexcri - Mike’s in a band, Will’s a music snob, they’re both contemplating their life choices. very fun, very interesting, also made me think about some things. 

keep it hush by wiseatom - theres an amusement park and the horrors of customer service. and some other stuff but basically its pretty bright (the visuals of the fic in my head are bright- like sun glinting off metal- and idk how else to describe it)

the start of an age by delusionaltogether (Whyyyyy) - this ones funny and serious at times and its got Max in it. fantasy au with prince will and knight mike and a secret relationship and a small scheme between three parties that involves a fake (ish) marriage. 

superhero therapy by silverluminoqity - spiderman au with a side of trauma and healing? it’s complicated theres stuff happening, i had a good time reading it. 

you've got this spell on me by andiwriteordie - this one was really fun. basically its a fantasy au theres magic and mike gets himself hit with a spell that makes him fall in love with will and will freaks out about it for a while.

Daydream by disaster_energy - i really really liked this fic. its a fantasy au and its got gods and stuff and will gets chosen by the moon goddess because hes Will and everyone is like... woah.

takes one to know one by andiwriteordie - i also liked this one a lot, its a superhero au and its got ironic (like... dramatic irony- i think is what im talking about? maybe? but like fun irony) secret identities. 

Love goes 'round by evil_ontheinside - conversations in a laundry mat. mikes flopping (as in, flopping around like a fish) around a bit and this was pretty cute. 

my promise could be your fiend (could be the smallest of signs) by s0ld_it - spider man au, theres a bookstore involved and a lot of stuff. ive read this fic twice and greatly enjoyed it both times. 

Tip-toeing on Lily-pads by cherryisgone - very very fun, fantasy au and... mike gets cursed to be a frog. can only be un-cursed with a kiss.

there’s more but i spent all day painting my room and i am tired. i always interpreted it as him getting flustered because of the "guess i've always had a thing for older women" thing, which is honestly a wild thing to say in front of a bunch of strangers lmao!

yeah, he's american! i think i'd personally keep the accent because it's more devastating the more similar illyria is to her shell. i also always interpreted fred!illyria as having an american accent because... muscle memory, i guess? idk, i feel like there's a lot of interesting questions to explore about where illyria's host ends and where she begins.

(ie. pronouns, for instance! i'm partial to the [not necessarily canon-compliant] headcanon that illyria was worshiped as a god of incomprehensible demon gender which best aligns with she/her in modern english, but is ultimately divorced from the body she's in. i just like the gender fuckery of wes!illyria using she/her, though he/him wes!illyria also accomplishes something similar in a different way. which, to go back to the original question: how much of illyria is innate? how much does she absorb the 'essence' of her host? how much does she absorb other people's interpretations of her host? these are the questions that keep me up at night.)

Yeah! Fantasy racism is a subject that I think about a lot, like- racism exists because colonism and colonism only exists because the state wants to make a profit

Reducing racism to fear of the body is something a lot of fantasy writers do and it always bothers me

But it's also something that I worry I will stumble into accidently- like I'm brown but I have this little world building project where I want to put my own experiences with racism but i always worry that I'm gonna fumble it badly- because ultimately these fantasy characters aren't human, so my experiences won't translate completely

I think the issue comes from the range of xenofiction is out there, like from end end of the spectrum you got stories from perspective real life rabbit trying to evade a real life fox then which is all about the animals experience rather than a human one, then you got works like zootopia from the other end, trying to insert the human experience of racism into the mix qnd failing badly cause these are animals, its not gonna translate

Which is why despite bodies being a big part of my world building project I'm touching the fear of the body aspect of racism, not only because its already a miniscule aspect of racism that gets overly focused on but also because these characters aren't human so its just make me end up in a zootopia situation

IDK, does this make sense, I'm still not sure how I feel about fantasy racism as a trope in general so if you disagree with any points (or all of them) I'd like to hear

idk i think including fantasy racism is fine but you'll have to really deconstruct WHY racism is bad far past the basic "don't descriminate against people" stage, otherwise i think you wont be able to critique it well enough and might end up perpetuating your own biases (it's alright we've all got them)

what i try to remember when writing fantasy racism is that whatever the racist people need to claim about the people they're being racist against NEEDS to be not true in order to be at all analogous to human racism. and it's best if the racism is within one species, so as to not accept the idea that there are genuine genetic differences between races of people, seeing as "race" isnt really a scientific category.

oh, and the bigots should probably try really hard to make it seem credible, to the point that people who don't think they're personally a bigot could even think that the racist ppl are being reasonable sometimes. but at it's core, it needs to just NOT BE TRUE.

like for example in Bright, people are "racist" against the orcs because the orcs sided with a dark overlord in the past (i think). which is an interesting idea, but because bright is clearly making the orcs analogous to black people, it just ends up coming off as really insulting. black people and similarly racially coded minorities didn't side with an evil guy a thousand years ago, that's not why white ppl enslaved and impoverished and murdered us lmao.

like that could be an interesting world building thing about descendants being punished and discriminated against for the actions of ancient ancestors and stuff. but like. they're coded as black people. and that's just NOT MUY BUENO.

zootopia was kind of shit in a lot of ways but one thing i do appreciate and that i think they got right is that the "going feral" thing was a LIE. in the fiction of zootopia, predator animals aren't actually inherently more dangerous. and it wasnt just a LIE it was a CONSPIRACY to play on people's prejudiced fears in order to gain power or something idk i forget. everything else aside i think that was a good call.

and yknow you dont always have to make it a "race" thing specifically. people have been bigoted against each other for their looks for a long time, but race specifically is pretty new. ethnicities and cultures and traditions are also things you can write people to be bigoted against. it doesn't have to be a 1 to 1 analogy for IRL modern day racism in america or anything.

i also enjoy stories like Beastars, where it develops its own worlds premise well enough that it feels more like an exploration of an interesting concept than a clunky racism or sexism analogy.

While I wasn't gonna engage with the wiki editing discourse, I saw a take that rather upset me with regards to it. To directly quote that person;

They [the wiki editor's sources] don't say either way, it's not wrong to say that they don't state anything about it and that it's an internal disagreement. It's also a disagreement if it's a real disorder, all it did was say true things.

To validate the "disagreement" on if DID is a real disorder or not would be to validate the quack theory of vaccines causing autism. Not all disagreements are created equal, and despite the wishy-washy "blame the medical field for that" the fantasy theory on DID is actually not validated by any modern resources- especially the ones that the wiki editor cited. To validate the "disagreement" on if DID is a real disorder or not would be a real act of ableism, one that yes, fellow DID systems are capable of. Just because a DID system edited the page doesn't mean that their word is infalliable and cannot be questioned, and just because there's something you perceive as a disagreement doesn't mean that there is in fact a disagreement with two equal sides that present valid points. People use that exact disagreement theory to invalidate transgender people by saying "well, we can't say for sure if trans people really experience gender dysphoria because Roy Blanchard said it was a paraphilia to want to be in another gender's body so scientists disagree, yknow? All I'm saying is that there's a disagreement, guys!"

The reason DID systems push back so heavily on this "we don't know, there are disagreements" is because of viewpoints like this, where "disagreement" is almost always exclusively used to de-legitimize the argument of "this disorder frequently presents symptoms of trauma disorders despite being a dissociative disorder and should include treatment of such". It's not brought up ever to validate DID systems that don't have trauma histories, it's not brought up to discourage those who insist they need to re-traumatize themselves to feel more valid as a system, it's only there to say "well DID isn't trauma based so endogenics can have DID, shut up sysmed". Nobody addresses how this invalidates the need for trauma recovery in DID systems, or how it forces them to get a separate diagnosis of C-PTSD which can be quite difficult, or how in that case their DID can be mistaken for "PTSD with dissociative symptoms", an entirely separate diagnosis.

Iatrogenic DID and the fantasy model/social model are not, and I repeat, not, valid disagreements. They're anti-survivor, anti-recovery bullshit pushed to paint us as hapless attention-hungry neurotypical adult babies with overactive imaginations acting out for selfish reasons. You do not bring up these as "valid disagreements", and if you do, then fuck. guess you think fakeclaiming is fine now.

Ok so. Um. Maka is a pretty direct connection, the anglicized version of makhá (meaning earth). Since she is the connection between the earth and the galaxy and all that. So her name will always be a reminder of her roots even after everyone she knew has died. I do know that there are people of Lakota descent named Maka so it’s…. Probably ok?

Her brother is Keyah (kéya) meaning turtle. His name is a bit of a spoiler for their story but. Yknow. It’s OCs is that even a thing. Anyway. This is when I was digging through Lakota sky charts and trying to find the closest name for the Andromeda galaxy. The best I found (again if I’m wrong kill me) was the turtle constellation (aka Pegasus)

This is one of those things where if I am wrong I am begging someone to smite me down

As for the rest of em…. I genuinely do not remember. I could argue Delphi comes from oracle of Delphi -> predicting the future -> time magic but she’s had that name since…. 2012 I think? Long long before she had any sort of magic. Back when she was a Pokémon OC x canon

AU where almost everyone’s family who passed in canon is alive. Except Sara’s biological fam. Sorry bby. Oh and maybe Ei’s parents cause who are they. Basically Sara meets the (future) in-laws. Kinda mixed modern fantasy (because they keep their non human traits) stuff ig.

 Chapter 1: Plant A Little Seed Called Love

Sara had never known love.

No, not when she’d been orphaned at an age where she barely remembered a thing. Not when she’d been taken in, only to be constantly shut out of a ‘family’ that could not make it any clearer that they wanted nothing to do with her unless it was to turn her into their profit-earning horse.

When she’d been given a name, she almost thought she’d know love; but even that was a misconception on her part.

Sara did not know love. Not when her father seemed to take pleasure in the constant ‘discipline’ he dished out on her: small slaps on the wrists, kneeling for hours on grainy sand from sunrise ‘til nightfall, shoveling snow, chopping wood, learning all forms of martial arts for hours on end before coming home to study until her candles were all out of wax, leading to her sleeping on the thin mat with equally thin blankets keeping her alive throughout the night.

No, she knew not love. Not when her brothers had spared her no moment of attention, affection, or siblingship. Not when Masahito forbade her from ever using the dojo while he was around and never speaking a word to her ever. Not when Kamaji hadn’t even invited her to his own wedding. Sara was fifteen, for crying out loud, and they had been living in the same house at the time!

(She remembered sobbing silently to herself as she spent the night of the supposed reception alone, poring over high school examination results that her father deemed not good enough and were up for review.)

She knew not love when she noticed them walking in on one of her ‘penalty sessions’ with her father, and felt her heart shatter into shards that tore at her from within when they turned a blind eye and walked away, closing the door behind them.

 Kujou Sara had not known love.

At least not until she’d been adopted into her best friend’s home at seventeen, Ayaka no longer being able to stomach the stories Sara would unwittingly share when she was too tired out to evade Ayaka’s very leading line of questions from time to time. That and Ayaka had caught Sara in a nightmare once, and from what Yoimiya had later told her, the little heiress had turned restless for many a night thinking about Sara’s predicament. She had searched countless ways and tried numerous methods of convincing until her parents finally saw for themselves and agreed that it was too dangerous for Sara to be left in that house.

The Kamisato family had always been disgusted by the Kujous, so much so that they had initially not wanted Ayaka anywhere near the youngest daughter of the clan, even shunning Sara from their door the first time Ayaka had invited her over despite being known as a welcoming and nonjudgmental family.

It could have been an overreaction, but it was just that difficult to give Kujou Takayuki and any of his kin the benefit of the doubt.

But then Ayaka begged and pleaded, and a toothy-grinned Yoimiya tried to bribe them with custom fireworks, and surprisingly, even Thoma quietly requested Ayato and the Kamisato parents to give Sara a chance to just come in, sit with them and… be.

 They should have not been able to trust a Kujou.

But Kujou Sara… she was sweet, and lovely, and an awkward, clumsy little thing. She was overly courteous, spoke stiffly like a soldier, but was clearly very kind. Earnest and genuine, Ayaka knew her parents had fallen in love (if Sara eating at their house three times a week despite the Kujou clan’s known strictness was any indicator. Ayaka did not know how her parents got permission to whisk Sara away, though she was glad they did).

So when Sara showed up at their doorstep at half-past three in the morning, battered and bruised, the skin over her eye bloodied shut; when they had discovered the surprising treasure that was Sara’s heritage, cruelly marred, tattered, and tainted- Ayaka and Miss Kamisato had shed tears at the state of her supposedly majestic wings- the family knew enough was enough.

It took all of Thoma’s power to rip the sword out of Ayato’s clenched hands before the men of the house rushed for the police station to have the Kujou’s apprehended and possibly sentenced to long, long years in hell.

 Her adoption was surprisingly quick, and without much problem, possibly due to the large influence of the Kamisatos in general.

A few hiccups were met on the road, but then… finally, then. Sara knew love.

She knew love the moment she woke up past her usual hellish five-AM wake up call to her new sister who greeted her good morning from the opposite end of their now-shared room, who brushed her crazy morning bedhead before handing her a fluffy pair of slippers, gently taking her by the hand and leading her down the stairs for breakfast.

Kamisato Kayo had once more cried for the child Sara could not be as she tried to tell the girl that it was okay for her to eat at the table with everyone, at the same time, just as they always did when Sara came over for dinners. No, she did not have to ‘serve’ them their meals and wait for them to finish first. No, she was not ‘unworthy’ of seating at the ‘master’s table’.

She tried not to let the young tengu see her tears when she’d been told that her favorite breakfast food was onigiri, and nothing could compare. Well, because she had nothing to compare it to.

Thoma and Kayo had prepared her so many items that morning that Ayaka had complained for Sara that she would get bloated if they kept piling more food onto the overwhelmed girl’s plate.

Yes. Sara knew love when breakfast was mixed with warm miso soup and a mother’s affection.

Sara knew love when each time she’d have to head out to anywhere with Ayaka or Thoma, someone would bid her farewell by the door. When it was Mrs. Kami- her mother (Sara had to get used to that), she’d always be sent off with a lingering hug and a kiss to the forehead for safety.

She always did feel the effect was true, believing it even more every time she was able to return to that warmth unscathed.

 Sara knew love when she finally returned to school and heard no whispers nor rumors about her despite the obvious public trial her formed adoptive father had for more crimes than the ones committed against her.

Maybe it was because someone had kept people’s mouths shut around her, or everything was simply drowned out by the sunshine of Yoimiya’s presence as she tackled her and welcomed her back before taking her to morning archery practice.

 Sara knew love when she finally mustered up the courage to befriend the clever Miss Kuki from her class after much encouragement from Yoimiya and Ayaka. Sara had grown up with an appreciation for dioramas, and how perfect the world in them seemed to be compared to her own shabby and grey one.

When Miss Kuki had brought one such well-crafted piece for a school event, Sara had yearned to befriend her and have her teach a thing or two.

This was also the fandom that helped me realize that I wasn't exactly straight and that it's okay to not be loud about my sexuality, that I can just be.

I think that explains my attachment to this ship, not to mention just the movie's Grantaire (played by George Blagden) also shipped the characters and played his character like how he thought it should be, Grantaire loving and pining after Enjolras without the revolutionary knowing it.

Except in the fan fics, Enjolras returns his feelings and they work it out, even though it's not easy because they're both stubborn as mules. Ah, ultimate fantasy I guess. And the number of great fics here, *whistle*

Anyway, I'm an Eruri fan through and through. Especially with that promise that Levi made to Erwin. And the reason he gave the serum to Armin. HE DIDN'T DO IT FOR THE KIDS YKNOW. HE DID IT FOR ERWIN. Plus, Levi, Erwin, and Hange are my special trio. Erwin's batch was really amazing.

It really is more of a love story than a ghost story. I dunno how to feel about this. I loved these two characters so much and I wished they had a better ending but I wasn't SO surprised because it was a horror series (Like, I was still hoping at the end that they'd be together forever but yknow...). In any case, Jamie was just awesome. And her nickname for Dani? Poppins?! God, what a lover and fighter. She was not afraid to cock a gun in a ghost's face.

Merlin x Arthur aka Merthur - BBC Merlin

Yeah, my brain is so chaotic multiple OTPs and BROTPs of the same pairing exist at the same time without clashing with one another or having major identity crises.

I actually really like BROTP Merlin and Arthur and also like reading OTP Merthur.

And when Merlin is paired with Morgana or Freya or sometimes even Gwaine, that's fine with me too. As long as his bromance with Arthur stays intact, because that's what drew me to the show in the first place. Personal preference. I see them as platonic soulmates.

*Shout-out to the Merthur writers though, you kept me sane during my "Post-Merlin Depression," which is actually a term thrown around in the fandom because of that horrid final season (not saying it's a good term but it's what it was called). A lot of amazing fics here, too, both Magic Reveal and Modern AU ones. Full of action and adventure too! I mean, there are boy-band-looking Knights and magic-wielding badasses!

Tim Drake x Conner Kent/Kon-El aka Red Robin x Super Boy - DC Comics

More like flexible otp. I dig Stephanie Brown and Tim Drake BUT I really really also dig Tim Drake and Conner Kent. When they're TimKon, it's like an entirely different entity from TimSteph. Ugh, hard to explain.

I mean, Kon telling Tim, "You'll always be my Robin" and Tim telling Kon, "And you'll always be my clone boy" is the shit. Also when Kon could pick out/recognize Tim's heartbeat. And when Tim nearly went mad scientist trying to bring his bestie back. Like, dudes, wtf. And at the same time, hell yeah.

Liu Kang x Kung Lao aka LiuLao - Mortal Kombat

- I see these two as more like ride or die best friends connected by fate/platonic soulmates. But also like their dynamic is so awesome, cute, sweet, badass, can't-live-without-you vibes.

Basically the same way I feel about Merthur. I like reading both romantic and platonic relationships between these two characters. Like, the LiuLao fan creators peeling off the layers of this relationship and exposing every raw nerve is beautiful.

They love diving into the characters' psyche, emotions, motivations, fears, and doubts and you get really amazed because... Aren't they just characters from a video game, you ask? Well yeah, but MK video game has several interesting storylines and the Mortal Kombat 2021 movie was just the perfect jumpstarter to this beautiful blaze.

I mean, "We swore that if we were to die, it would be together"? Hell no, you're not dropping that on us and not expecting us to create our very own spin-offs and 12-page essays on that shit. That's what we fans do, baby. And also, really, we need a shaolin monks/white lotus spin-off/prequel. We're starving here.

Comparing RWBY and YGO DM: The Handling and Evolution of Themes

Hey! Its been a hot minute since I last posted anything RWBY-related but Im laying in my bed right now and Im sick and bored so I guess we're doing this. Today I will do my best to analyze what I percieve to be the main themes and messages of both of these shows, or more specifically, how theyre handled narratively. Im mostly focusing on that part because, while these series do have similar themes and messaging, they are still a few things in which they are wildly different. And with that, lets start with this essay-post-thing!

1. Theres something we need to adress first

Okay so, before we can really talk about this, theres something I feel the need to clarify here: Neither of these stories was "planned from the beginning".

Now, I dont think a story being planned from the beginning or not nesscessarily makes the story any better or worse by default, however, it is still important to acknowledge because the way the story is planned is going to affect every facet of it. Things are not going to be foreshadowed properly, things are gonna be set up only for nothing to come of it, the story might drastically change directions, characters might act differently, etc, etc.

And, this is bit off-topic but, it's much better to just admit that the story was not planned than trying to pretend that it was. Like, there are a lot of reasons why I tend to be so forgiving towards YGO even though its not very good, but one of them is definitely the fact that, as far as Im aware atleast, the guy who wrote it isnt pretending to have had this big master plan all along and neither is the fandom. With RWBY on the other hand... yeaaaah, its kinda the opposite. From what Ive seen of RWBYs fandom, there seems to be this pretty popular narrative that everything was planned even though it clearly wasnt. Thats pretty bad and honestly lowers my opinion of the writers so much more than if they would just admit to not having a proper plan.

Like, I initially consumed YGO like this: Yu-Gi-Oh Duel Monsters, Yu-Gi-Oh (aka Season 0), like, a quarter of the Yu-Gi-Oh manga (I still havent finished it)

In all three of these we have the character of Yami Yuugi, or just Yami. Broadly speaking, he is an ancient egyptian gamer spirit who lives in a magical puzzle that has not been solved for 3000 years until this highschooler named Yuugi Mutou comes along and solves it, thus setting him free and allowing him to possess Yuugi and have access to the vague magical powers of the puzzle.

In Duel Monsters he's perfectly fine most of time, morally speaking. There is an instance of him almost murdering a guy and its a bit unclear what exactly happens to those he mindcrushes but overall he's very much a pretty good guy. In Season 0 most of what he does is set up these games for bad people, where they will go insane no matter what they do. From how I understand this whole Shadow Game, Penalty Game stuff, if you lose a Shadow Game, you get violent and intense hallucinations and you will always cuz yknow, gamer spirit. But if you try to cheat, which most of the bad people do in this show, you get violent and intense hallucinations as a punishment.

Since the two anime are generally considered two different continuities, its perfectly fine that Yamis characterization is wildly different in both of them. But in the manga both of these characterizations appear, basically one after the other with no real arc or consequences, for that matter. Why is that? Simply put, someone thought it was a good idea to try to turn an episodic, very slice of life-y light-horror manga into a more traditional, more plot-driven battle shounen. From what Ive heard, it was apparently largely because of network interference or something, but the point is, it changed directions incredibly drastically with little planning and everyone knows this and I can understand that for the most part.

In RWBY we have the character of Blake Belladonna, who, in the first 3 volumes/seasons atleast, was this aloof, more toned down loner-type character with a pretty strong sense of justice. She's an in-universe marginilized racial minority and she clearly cares about racial injustice. The way its initially framed makes it seem like she had a very hard life and no stable support system, which is what eventually pushed her to join a Civil Rights group/Terrorist organization (good god, the Faunus subplot is so awful, I could write a whole essay about it but Im already de-railing rn so I'll just save that for later).

Then, in volumes 4-5 it turns out her father is actually like, the mayor or chief of this island-place called Menagerie and she grew up in this big mansion with multiple guards/servants. Oh and also, apparently "space is a commodity" on there, so theres that. She still retains large parts of her personality but she's kinda like, worse somehow I think. I cant really describe it in a meaningful way but I hope you get what Im saying anyway. Then in Volume 6 she confronted her emotional abuser Adam (sorry for not mentioning him sooner but yeah, he was like, her abusive boyfriend, which is something that a lot of people disagree with but I wont really say anything about it either way because I dont really feel any specific way) with her friend, Yang, and ended up killing him.

After all that, she pretty much lost the rest of her personality, as well as her arc about all the Faunus stuff. She just kinda became the meek, generically nice, recovering abuse victim. Why? Well, the actual reason is that they didnt plan out shit and are just kinda flying by the seat of their oversized clown-pants and if they and the fandom just admitted it, I would have less of an issue. I still wouldnt be as forgiving towards RWBY as I am towards YGO because the crux of the issue, for me, is just that I dont particulary like RWBY but also like. Do you really expect me to take MKEK seriously as writers after admitting to not have a timeline because iT wOuLd CaUsE pLoThOlEs?

However, since they want us to believe that everything was planned out from the beginning, the explaination would be.... Idk, they deliberately butchered one of their main characters?? Because.. they hate her?? Maybe????

So yeah, that was quite a detour however, I would like you to keep this mind going forward.

2. Themes of the Early Series'

First, what do mean by 'Early Series' for both of these shows respectively? Well, for YGO that would have to be Season 0 or if youre reading the manga, everything pre-Duelist Kingdom. Basically, the part of the series thats a episodic, very slice of life-y light-horror series.

For RWBY that would be the first three Volumes, also known as the Poser-Era. Back then it was just kinda an action series that took place at Anime Warrior Academy (also known as Beacon) with some pretty bare minimum worldbuilding, character-driven plots and developments but now its more of an epic high-fantasy story with more of an emphasis on plot as opposed to just action.

The themes and messages in Early YGO are kinda vague, very confusing to me and if you were to follow any of it literally that would be pretty bad. For now Im just gonna say the main themes are Friendship and Identity and mostly focus on the Identity aspect.

Now, it took me a little while to figure out RWBYs deal but I think the main themes for Volumes 1-3 are also Friendship and Heroism. Once again, I'll mostly focus on Heroism and touch on Friendship more briefly later.

I dont have much more to add to YGOs themes right now, so I'll briefly go over Heroism in RWBY.

In RWBYs setting there are these man-eating monsters called Grimm that have basically infected the planet. In order to deal with that, they have people called huntsmen and huntresses that kill them and protect people. Theyre trained at special academies like Beacon and go on missions there and stuff like that. Our four main characters, Ruby, Weiss, Blake and Yang, are training to become huntresses and one day they go on this mission to clean up a grimm infested city block with one of their teachers. Obviously, that takes a long time so they have to camp out in one of the empty houses. Weiss, Blake and Yang cant sleep because theyve been thinking about this question that their teacher asked them when they were fighting grimm: "Why do you want to become a huntress?"

They have a heart to heart and we find out about their motivations; Weiss wants to bring honour back to her family, Blake want to distance herself from the White Fang (that terrorist organization I mentioned earlier) and as an extension from Adam, Yang wants to have a life of adventure. They also talk about why Ruby wants to be a huntress and it turns out that she judt wants to help people. Unlike the others, she has no motivation besides that. We're meant to listen to that and look at her as a sort-of personification of Heroism: kind, but not naive, strong and most of all, selfless. The others on her team are not portayed as bad for not being like Ruby by any means but we are clearly meant to admire her the most out of all of them.

Okay, now comes the part Ive been looking forward to the most:

3. How did these themes evolve in the Modern Series'?

Alright, before we can really delve into the way they evolved in YGO I'll have to give you a brief summary of the character progression. At the start of DM, during the Duelist Kingdom arc, Yami Yuugi is just that; A darker Yuugi. Hes more confident, bolder, his voice is deeper, hes somehow taller, more ruthless, all that good stuff. Notably, he doesnt actually seem more skilled than Yuugi even at the start of this story, but he's still dependent on Yami. Yami on the other hand, has no identity of his own or even hints at one at this point. He's just The Other Yuugi.

Then during the Battle City arc, they find out that Yami was actually a pharao prior to being sealed in the puzzle, he just didnt know because of amnesia, I guess. So now they need to find out his real name and then send him to the afterlife because hes meant to be dead, but not before saving the world from being swallowed by darkness, which is also a thing they have to do now.

Then we finally get to the Memory World arc, where Yami, Yuugi and the rest of the gang astralproject to ancient egypt via puzzle magic. Yami is trying to figure out what the hell is going on and who all these familiar people are, while Yuugi & Co are trying their best to help him. Then some weird shit happens and it turns out that all of that is not just Yamis sealed away memories, but also a giant D&D Shadow Game that will destroy the world if Yami loses. So now theres Pharao!Yami who is still clueless on the metaphorical and literal playing field and Player!Yami, who is kinda controlling himself now? I guess?? Yamis opponent, The Spirit of The Ring, has something similar to that going on where hes both controlling and properly participating in the game. So Player!Yami is now fighting against Player!TSoTR, Pharao!Yami is now fighting against Thief King Bakura (who is like, the human, ancient egyptian version of the Ring Spirit) and Yuugi is now fighting against Yami Bakura (who is like, the human, modern japanese version of the Ring Spirit). Yuugi gets Yamis real name, he and the gang go over to Pharao!Yami and tell him his name, meanwhile Player!Yami is also somehow helping as well and they defeat the Ring Spirit, thus saving the world. Then they travel to modern Egypt, the Ceremonial Duel happens and Yuugi wins, sending Yami to the Afterlife where he can finally rest and that was the series!

I originally wanted to recount the stuff that was going on with the Ring Spirit and his host as well because they parallel eachother, but this summary is already far too long and I think youll get the point without me needing to explain any more.

My point here is, that the story went from being vaguely about Identity, maybe? to being very clearly about Self-Discovery and Learning to Be Independent. I think this is a very good way to evolve the messaging of your story. How does RWBY track on that?

Well, uh... its not great. I will acknowledge that they have tried to introduce new themes and ideas since, even though I wont really be talking about them in this post. But yeah, the whole Heroism thing really regressed.

Like, I didnt explicitly say it when I was explaining grimm earlier, but theyre not going away. The grimm have always been there and people who sign up to become huntsmen and huntresses are effectively signing up for a job that will never truly be done, no matter what they do. Characters like Ruby and even more minor ones like Phyrrah have shown us that that doesnt matter when youre a hero. No life isnt worth saving, no grimm isnt worth killing, no criminal isnt worth arresting. Then, in volume 6 they find out about Salem. Salem is the Big Bad of the show, shes immortal, controls the grimm and is supposed to be very powerful.

What do our heroes do? They give up. Sike! They were just mindcontrolled by monsters or some shit, of course they didnt give up their mission (which is to bring an Important Macguffin to a city called Atlas, sorry I didnt mention it)!

But then they arrive in Atlas (which is llike, a city thats floating over another city called Mantle) and yknow, they do some plot stuff thats not really important right now until the city gets invaded by Salem and this big grimm army she has.

What do our heroes do? Well, Ruby, Weiss, Blake and some side characters are chilling, drinking tea in a mansion and Yang and the B Team were actually trying to do something, but even those efforts seem incredibly minimal.

Oh wait, I also forgot to mention that Ironwood (a fairly minor, vaguely antagonistic character up until now) wanted to lift Atlas even higher to save Atleasian civilians from danger while leaving Mantle vulnerable to Salems invasion.

What would be the most heroic thing to do?

A) Let Ironwood lift Atlas, get as much support as they can down to Mantle and save as many Mantle civilians as they can from the invasion

B) Prevent Ironwood from lifting Atlas but then split up in order to protect both Atlas and Mantle civilians

C) Prevent Ironwood from lifting Atlas and then dont do anything else

Congrats! If you choose C, you think exactly like the writers!

And I just

This is so mindboggling to me, I feel like I shouldnt even have explain how this is bad. And like, it wouldve been so easy to actually make them seem herokc through their actions, to make it seem like they did try but no.

I have never seen a central theme be this botched, how in the world did they do that? Why did they think it was a good idea for Ruby "The Embodiment of Heroism" Rose to sit in a mansion doing nothing, no planning, no organizing just ..... God, how are they this bad? Like, this doesnt even have anything to do with it being planned in any way, this is just straight up incompetence

4. Very briefly touching on friendship

The friendship is awful and its not solely because they all have the same opinions. They barely interact with eachother outside their designated pairs which leads to it all feeling incredibly hollow. Theyre also practically indistingushable from one another now, which is a shame because it wasnt always like that. Like, I dont think the characters were that well-developed in earlier volumes but they were very well-characterized. But now we've gotten to a point where you can literally copy and paste one characters dialogue onto another and literally nothing changes, it really sucks.

5. Some closing words

Damn, this took way longer than I thought it would and now Im pretty exhausted. I have no idea how yall always write these but props to you! I feel like this ended up a bit rambly but overall, Im pretty proud.

Please let me know what you think of the points I brought up! Id also really appreciate some tips on how to get better at these longer posts because I am planning on writing more in the future (not the near future, probably but yknow).

I can't believe i keep forgetting to send you this but: if the stories/settings you have created could all become video medium, what would they be like? Would they be movies, series, hell even youtube videos? What already existing things (not necessarily filmed/animated themselves! Video games and static art are also fair game!) would you want their style to be like? Live action or animated? 2D, 3D, stop motion, something else? (Rambling encouraged if you want, as always :) )

Damn! Like, what a question! I honestly hadn’t really thought about that before. I mean, obviously with the exception of listening to songs and vividly imagining sweet animatics to go with whatever I’m hyperfixating on (I have actually been trying to realize some of those recently with little mini comic sketches, but they never come out as cool as they look in my head. Partially because I can’t animate, partially because I’m still not that great at drawing. But I try!)

But as for actually making my works into a video medium... I think I’m going to focus on my original works here because for fanfic I think I’d probably keep them in the same style as the original work, just because that’s how I see them while I’m writing them, so like, the Witcher fics would be live action but the Resi or DBH fics would be 3D animated just for like. Narrative continuity sake, even if the fics don’t actually fit into the narrative.

(putting the rest of it under a readmore because I got long and rambly)

I’m actually going to start with the original work that I talk about far less on here, and that’s Data from a Dying Star, an original sci-fi novella? novel? series? still working on it, about an astrophysicist and the crew of their research ship struggling to deal with the effects of war and loss while on their way to observe a once in a lifetime stellar event, and possibly the fallout after that. I think if I were to make it into a video medium it’d end up being a movie or maybe a movie series, depending on how everything pans out. And despite my love for animation and the fact that the story is full of aliens that would be difficult to show convincingly in live action, I really can’t think of it as anything but live action. The aesthetic would be like some combination of the J.J. Abrams Star Trek movies, TNG, my patchy understanding of Mass Effect, and whatever it is that this cover for Becky Chamber’s The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet has going on: building on old school traditions of sci-fi but with a modern understanding and sensibilities. Oh, and also this art piece specifically. Streamlined and geometrically modern mixed with organic elements, along with careful uses of color to portray mood. The ship, the only significant setting, shouldn’t be hard or sterile, but convey the life and emotions of the crew inhabiting it, which can sometimes be feelings of isolation and depression. Also the aliens should be practical effects as much as possible, though I admit that would probably be difficult, especially for those with different body configurations. Ryt in particular would be a nightmare, what with six appendages and fully covered in fur but like. Figure it out. Make it work.  If you CG my favorite child I’m coming for you kneecaps.

And then there’s Mhyddon, my homebrew D&D setting that I’ve been working on for years now and am actively running a game in (you may have heard me refer to Avan; Mhyddon is the world, Avan is a continent in that world. Avan is where the current campaign takes place and therefore where I’ve focused the most on worldbuilding). The nature of D&D and the setting would lend itself to a visual medium that was also episodic, whether that was a TV show or youtube videos. I could actually see either, but it would depend on what the focus was. If it was the campaign, the adventures of my party of lovely thembos, TV show would work best to keep a sense of the narrative throughline and character growth. But if it was just sort of a tour around Avan/Mhyddon, youtube videos would work really well. I actually got excited thinking about the possibility of a number of short videos, each from the perspective of an NPC that highlighted some aspect of the worldbuilding and the variety of experiences across Avan (following Compassion for a day to showcase the city of Savent, the experience of a younger Aravance to show life studying magic at the Obsidian Sanctum, Zero and the consequences of the Voldraunian Empire’s invasion, etc etc etc). Either way, they’d be animated, probably 2D animation because I love it so much and think it’s critically underrated in our modern day. Obviously the gold standard for 2D D&D animation is the Critical Role campaign 2 introduction, and I’m thinking probably something along those lines? But also, like, not quite. I also really love the work of ABD Illustrates in general and on High Hopes, Low Rolls specifically. Or even Avatar the Last Airbender because yknow, that show is gorgeous. And like, I certainly wouldn’t want it to be in my own amateurish style, but I have done some drawings of people and places in the world. I don’t know, 2D is hard because there’s so much possibility. I’d want something semi-realistic in order to keep it feeling somewhat grounded, but also it’s a fantasy world with room to explore and just make some gorgeous art. Beyond that I think I’d get too far into the specifics of inspiration for individual cities, towns, and landscapes (Savent was inspired by Assassin’s Creed Origins, much of the Greyspire Mountains are a mishmash of my own experiences in and around the Rocky Mountains, the Rustfell Peninsula comes from the depictions of Edoras from the LotR movies, etc).

he’s totally not cishet look how he sits and his colour palette is pretty close to the ace flag so, though since he’s the villain for the decent amount of the game it’s important to be careful with that

I think that his design in combination with how the hobw tends to look feels antisemitic in a way that is recurring in fable that should be addressed more often I really hope if 4 ever happens they change the like good/evil morph pretty considerably, 3 is an improvement though

I don’t have many feelings towards him though as a character, there’s a thing with tone in 3 that I’ll talk about more with reaver that influences this I think, and just in general he sort of exists separately to everyone for most of the game, like he’s the player characters brother you should feel Something but there’s just no like. anything to their interactions. what’s his relationship like with theresa, with walter, with like Anyone, he just monologues at a map!!! do something talk to someone half a character is their interactions!!!! fuck!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

for real though my thoughts here are complicated because there are parts to this character that touch on things that I like(pirates,cool spooky void stuff,) but those don’t get like, any focus

I like him in 2! I only like him in 2. aside from the weird character design decisions 3 made, theres the tone thing I mentioned at logan that I’ve been thinking about lately I’m not sure I can word it right but I’ll give it a shot!

so like, I think, fable likes to be funny, the feel it generally goes for is fun and it’s a fantasy game yknow? characters like jack of blades and lady grey (and the crawler kiiiind of? a bit) are obviously bad but because of either the way the game treats them or the way the game feels or the things they do theyre fun villains who I like! reaver in 2 falls into this I think, yes pirates are real but, like knights and stuff there’s. I can’t think how to word it, there’s a difference between historical knights and fantasy knights and reaver is a fantasy pirate, the shadow court stuff is obviously bad but that’s also not real? the tone of 2 is more serious than 1 and I haven’t replayed it in a while so I’d have to play it to know how it lands Exactly. but reaver in 3 hits too real with actual things and lady grey is also evil rich person but the tone of the game carries that where 3 is serious about it and it’s effects that’s like the whole point and you can have a character and a game that does that but you can’t have that character Also be the fun villain because then it confuses things, that’s Also not to say the fun villain can’t be interesting or like metaphors or whatever obviously it’s just The Feel of the thing, fable 3 can have its evil factory guy but reaver isn’t the character for that for so many reasons. I really don’t think I explained this in a way that makes any sense I can try to word it clearer another time maybe

I have fixed this internal problem I have by pretending very very hard that reaver isn’t in 3 and that’s just some other guy and that’s fixed all of my problems, even that stuff aside from a character perspective I don’t buy it

anyone else noticed that he always wears things that cover his neck? I noticed it when compiling reference images for my animal crossing thing and I hate to give you the bad news but I am certain he’d never wear the sexy pirate shirt, if I had to design modern clothes for him he’d have a turtleneck

4) how many fic ideas are you nurturing right now? care to share one of them?

oh goodness you’re just really curious in what i’m working on, aren’t you?

hmmm, so i mean in terms of ideas i always have at least like 5 that would be so much fun to write - there’s a Qui-Gon/Shmi ficlet inspired by fae lore and a fantasy book i really like; there’s all these ideas for that post going around that’s like, “what if you stopped aging after 18 until you met your soulmate” but put that in the gffa (imagine! Cody desperately trying to hide from Obi-Wan that he’s aging when most of his bros aren’t! Rex being the only person that undertstands! Anakin and Padme never stopped aging because they met each other at such young ages); a rexsoka modern soulmates AU where you see in black and white until you meet your soulmate, but Ahsoka’s blind - this one would explore different ways that people could manipulate a blind person and would deal with some... light emotional/mental abuse, but it’s a super interesting idea. i have a few other ideas that i’m in varying stages of sorta-writing (Ahsoka saves rogue one is the name of a doc right now) as well, but if i listed everything this’d get way too long...

18) do you use any tools, like worksheets or outlines?

not really, actually! i’d probably be better at actually stayign focused and finishing things if i made outlines, but my preferred way to write is to talk things through with a friend to give me solid plot ideas and then to just kinda... let the characters do their own thing

32) how do you feel about smut?

i am ace. i don’t terribly mind smut, and i’ll read it in a story if it’s emotional or if it checks a couple other boxes, but i’ve never written it and i doubt i will. i’m perfectly fine with just writing some UST, flirting, and fading to black.

ohhh boy here goes. i’m just gonna go with what gdocs i have open right now, excluding the Hunger Games AU series and lullabies, as y’all already know about those 

i’m gonna be here til i’m nothing (but bones in the ground): a fullmetal alchemist fic i’ve been commissioned to do by a close friend of mine, who requested for Hughes and Roy during the Ishvalan War of Extermination

for want of a battle (the kingdom was lost): this is my self-indulgent “what if Vader decided to defect during twilight of the apprentice” fic - so far featuring Rex punching Vader, some background rexsoka, Ezra being suspicious, Ahsoka being Ahsoka, and soon to feature Vader reforming and getting a new suit, the takedown of the Empire, and Vader meeting his children and old Obi-Wan

i just wanna keep calling your name (until you come back home): codywan post Order 66 reunion fic! set in a verse where some influential Jedi survived Order 66 and Obi-Wan’s in hiding on Alderaan watching over both the twins, this fic is a series of dreams that chipped Cody and Obi-Wan share through the Force. it’ll eventually lead to Obi-Wan figuring out where Cody is and rescuing him from the Empire

Hunter AU: this currently-nameless fic is based off of a post by @gallusrostromegalus about Coruscant’s lower levels, in which Ahsoka is part of a clan in the mid/low levels who hunts the slightly terrifying creatures who live down there and yknow is just chillin and surviving, and Rex and a small squad are sent down on an undercover mission to discover the source of something that’s been, through the Dark Side of the Force, augmenting negative emotions (fear and anger) and inciting wild riots and protests and things on the surface. @collegefangirl3791 and i have some Real Fun plans for this, including a journey all the way down to Coruscant’s byssal level, completely underground, which has glowworms and glowing crystals and acidic rivers and lots of fun, alien things (literal built up layers of pure sulfur crystals, for instance) that we’ve come up with. that’s one i’m very excited about.

a smol excerpt (note that Rex and the boys have all been disguised so they don’t look identical):

The green-eyed blond man points at the jar that the injured man is holding, says, “This. Couple bacta patches.”

That’s- so much. Ahsoka can’t help grinning, pleased with herself - Carda will definitely be happy with this, maybe enough that Ahsoka can get some extra rations, and there’s probably plenty of bacta to act as tribute for these people. “Okay. Cool. I can take you to see my boss, but you’ll have to wait until closer to the end of wake, I’ve got shit to sell.”

She gives them all a pointed look, then adds, “Oh, by the way, what’re your names? I’m Ahsoka.”

“I’m Rex,” the blond man who’s been talking says, and they go around the circle - the man with the scar on his face is Cody, Jesse has the facial tattoo, Echo is the injured one, and Fives is the redhead. They seem… nice enough, and they agree to wait for her, and so Ahsoka goes back to Teren and the table.

“I got us some bacta,” she singsongs, patting Teren’s shoulder. “Definitely gonna get the extra rations this week.”

“You left our table unattended for like- too long,” Teren says, grumpy. “So she’s not gonna give them to you.”

Ahsoka flicks Teren’s left lek, grinning when he grumbles and ducks away from her. “So you don’t count as attended, is that what you’re saying? Or did you wander off?”

“That’s not what I meant.”

“Well, it’s what you said.”

anyway, on to the last two!

qui-gon lives: fairly self explanatory. Qui-Gon survives on Naboo. shit happens. he and Shmi are definitely a thing i don’t make the rules.

can you see right through me: this one is one i’m very excited about as well - it’s kinda modern day, but also kinda not, because it’s a modern day where the Greek mythology is all real. so some technology still is a thing but other stuff isn’t, and some things are replaced by magic, etc. Ahsoka is Medusa, basically, and her Gorgon sibs are Barriss and Anakin, and Rex is a blind enchanter who happens to run into them once. things happen. it’s fun.

fic prefs: aaaaaa i’m a rly big fan of angst and drama? kvjdfbh generally speaking I only read fics rated mature and up, but if it’s got the potential for emotional evisceration then i’m already eyeing it up 👀 that being said, i don’t like fics that go too hammy on the angst and always resorting to death and or having to break down screaming and crying or something lol i’m incredibly picky w/ angst. i’m very much for symbolism and introspection.... love me some nuanced  feelings. huge fan of fics with flavors of self-imposed destruction or kinda. impulsive crash and burn?? i’m NOT here for woobies, i need... self-awareness of being Awful... canon complement / missing scenes or fix it ? (i like both ? but if i honestly if i had to chose, canon complement can rly emphasize and heighten the emotional impact of a scene bc the fics can dive much further than the actual source could have due to time constraints or something ! )

kid fic or road trip ? ( hmm.... hard question. i don’t really read either of these, but i think i’d choose road trip just because it’s got good potential for character interactions bc ur stuck in the same tiny space LMAO. )

Slow Burn or Love At First Sight

I don't like love at first sight. I prefer the characters get to know each other be friends or enemies whichever. Also the pain of miscommunication and pining and the fluff all worth it

Fake Dating or Secret Dating 

Probably my most fave trope of all time. The thrill of falling in love because they act like they are in love. Also i dont have to wait for the lovey dovey moments coz usually its right off the bat. I love fake dating 100% throw to me all those fics pls

Enemies to Lovers or Best Friends to Lovers

I honestly think I like both but the dynamic of enemies to lovers is much more enticing to me. I mean I'll read both but the rivalry and the tension is soooo good to read

 Oh no, there’s only one bed! or Long-Distance with Correspondence

This gets me everytime no matter which fic it is it always just gets me and I don't regret it. Who doesn't love that tension and the shyness and the awkwardness and everything is just perfect.

Hurt/Comfort or Amnesia 

Omg this. That hurtful pang whenever the other cant remember then they try to do everything to make the other remember. Its hurts so much but its just soooo good.

Fantasy AU or Modern AU 

It's an easy read and I love easy reads. I have to actually dive in and get to know all the lores for an au which takes too much time thats why I prefer modern au than fantasy au

Mutual Pining or Domestic Bliss

Both I say better if i get them both at the same time. Fluff timeeee 

Smut or Fluff

BOTH 100% hey sometimes you just want your teeth to rot sometimes you want to sweat. Lol.

Alternate Universe or Future Fic

I pick both because it dependes on what I'm reading. I like AUs but also sometimes doing Future fics esp when the real thing is tragic or unfinished just soothes my soul
