bonefall rewrite piece where owlstar and sparrowstar meet at a negotiation of some sort.

Not so fast, REVERSE CARD OPEN!

I target BB!Owlstar on my side of the field to special summon canon!Owlstar in attack position and canon!Pebble Heart in defense position.

Anyway! My bad attempt at a joke aside I'm gonna have to hijack this prompt for my own ends because I've always thought that the Pebble-Sparrow-Owl trio could have a really cool dynamic as a trio in the aftermath of DotC. I need Pebble Heart to be a separate character from Owlstar because both from his position as a meddie and his characterization in canon I have him serve as a mediating influence, as an anchor that keeps his siblings from drifting too far off from each other. Plus I think trios just generally give a more stable ground for character dynamics than mere dyads.

This one I based on a fic I that's been rummaging in my mind for ages about Sparrow facing a coup from Skystar's kin following his death and having to convince her brothers to lend their aid in her campaign of guerrilla warfare to reclaim her position.

With labored breaths, Sparrow Fur sat against the rough bark of a tree with a trickle of blood going over her left eye.

Everything since the ambush had been a blurr. Skystar hadn’t even been cold in the ground for more than before one of his brats got cocky and decided to organize an insurrection. There’d been no shortage of cats to stand behind him, the downside of Skystar’s system of advancement by merit was that there would always be a gaggle of malcontent cats eager to stand behind the first cat to promise them a place by his right paw.

Though she had barely the energy to move she attempted anyway to rise to her feet before she was gently guided back down onto her back.

“Easy there,” Pebble Heart instructed, pressing a wad fo wet most as he wiped the spot on her head from where the blood was oozing. “I haven’t even finished cleaning your wounds, Sparrow. Are you like this with Acorn Fur as well?”

She didn’t reply, instead just letting the twitching of her tail to give the message. It had been humilliating enough to be forced to flee her own territory, to hide among the dampness of ShadowClan and forced to rely on kin she thought she’d have no debt to anymore. Yet here she was, SkyClan’s deputy reduced to such a sorry state.

“I know, I know,” the dark-gray tom soothed., adding with a sigh, “It’s so hopeless with you, SkyClan cats.” Briefly he turned around to retrieve a herb from the stash he’d managed to bring alongside him from his nest. “Will you calm down if I tell you that I have someone who can help you out with your predicament?”

“Pryyp?” Sparrow Fur mrowwed. It’d been the first word the ShadowClan medic had heard her say in hours.

“Pebble Heart?” a familiar voice asked approaching the makeshift clinic fashioned from the cover of a fallen tree.

For a moment Sparrow Fur vocalized a sound like a growl. The recently-arrived tom widened his already large eyes in surprise, standing there for a moment before rushing to the side of his brother and sister. It was Owlstar of ThunderClan.

“Do you know who did this to her?” Owlstar asked. “How did this happen? When?”

“I found her a couple sunrises ago,” Pebble Heart explained. “I don’t have all the details and she hasn’t been well enough to tell me herself but I’ve got an idea of what it was, and she’ll need your help.”

“No!” Sparrow Fur immediately snapped, causing her brothers to tumble back as she labored to go back on her feet. She found it hard for the words to come to her mouth but she could say that much. “No! No! No! NO! Not ThunderClan!”

“This is no time to be proud, Sparrow,” Pebble Heart insisted. “If you want to reclaim leadership from Tiger Tail--”

“Wait,” Owlstar piped up, his sight brightening. “Skystar’s dead? And it was one of his sons and not Sparrow who took the leadership? This is excellent! From now on we could--”

Owlstar was stopped in his enthusiasm by a growl from his sister and a scolding from his brother. “This is no time to be thinking of a battle! Sparrow’s hurt and her would-be murderers are chasing her and this is what you think about?”

“Well, I have to think of ThunderClan!” Owl Eyes defended himself. “And SkyClan’s been nothing but a threat. Why shouldn’t I think about our rivalry now?”

At least there was something she could agree with her brother on...

it’s been said but cat is a nobrainer dutiful wife and mother pious had a sept built at winterfell died trying to protect her son saint of the mother immediately. that time she prayed in the sept and then tried to settle the stannis renly clash by appealing to their fraternity is basically already a sermon on the Love of a Holy Mother. i will say lady stoneheart’s riverlands reign of terror IS damaging her campaign idk what the seven’s stance on revenants is but the medieval church thought specifically that saints’ bodies were purer and couldn’t be puppeted by demons as a lesser person might be + saints’ souls go directly to heaven and would not be bothering the living

brienne joan of arc figure maid of tarth etc. doing riverlands charity work with clergymen famously chaste and good does depend how her story ends but she’s a contender. unfortunately the church would definitely depict her conventionally attractive saint brienne patron of maidens oathkeeping and the isle of tarth would not look like brienne

massively depends how the sparrow storyline ends but if cersei blows up the sept with a lot of them inside that’s a literal martyr explosion i could especially see the high sparrow with his Eating Sparingly Out Of Love For The Poor. also the last high septon cersei had killed. lancel contender i’m not sure the faith is too hot on lannisters rn but there’s something there w him he’s got the born again convert and aceticism. being a lann traitor might work for him

related + also massively depends how she dies and how the trial by seven goes but i think marg as a saint of the maiden could be fun. married three times never consummated once (officially), cruelly slandered as a whore by the most significant enemy of the faith since maegor but all the testimony against her was false. she doesn’t have her physical maidenhead apparently but it’s said multiple times most noble girls don’t bc horseriding can easily break it. beloved by the smallfolk prays in the public sept very into giving alms. even if the faith can’t get past the maidenhead could definitely see blessed margaery. consider sansa for similar reasons esp assuming organised faith still exists after cersei’s death being a pious long-suffering maiden personally victimised by cersei lannister feels like a canonisation fast track

davos has a lot going for him as a saint esp if you polish the onion knighting into a parable instead of savvy business (you can charge starving people whatever you like) but his blasphemous allegiance to noted heathen stannis makes it less likely. unless he kills stannis in which case his saint cred shoots back up. a troubled youth then refinds the seven to combat a wicked heathen sorceress because he knows it to be right despite his love for stannis etc the faith could spin it

the idea that after joff died cersei immediately tried to have him canonised bc he’s her specialest boy is very funny. it’s also fun bc even though i’ve seen some people pull for saint robb robb is wayyyy too much an old gods pagan worshipper despite having every opportunity to follow the faith so saint joffrey the just is significantly likelier. robb is a sad footnote in the Life of St Catelyn

okay so-bumble was actually saved from woman abuser tom right?? was she ever like. ignored or denied and if so did the clans paint the history differently than how it happened? like “oh ya we always invited her in. everyone saved her then beat up tom” or some other rewrite of history? i feel like the clans would cover up their mistakes, esp those of older starclan/the og clan cats

Short answer: Bumble was treated very poorly by early ShadowClan, with this terrible treatment directly leading to the formation of ThunderClan. Her story is utterly misrepresented by history, entirely falsified into a xenophobic warning against outsiders.

The Truth: The foundation of ThunderClan

When Tom was brought into the house, paradise became hell. Tom began abusing both partners, often setting them against each other and forcing them to lie to keep the peace. Turtle Heart became pregnant, and Bumble spilled the secret that Tom was forcing her to keep; Humans often take kittens at 6 months or so-- especially from households like this one with a lot of cats.

Turtle Heart left, Bumble followed suit about a month later and was quickly accepted by her mate. They became the parents of two; Pebble Heart and Sparrow Heart.

While Tall Shadow and her group were quick to welcome back Turtle Heart, they weren't happy to see Bumble. Turtle Heart accepted full responsibility for her, promising that she would teach her how to hunt, or otherwise be solely responsible for feeding her.

Bumble has dyspraxia; she was never able to learn how to hunt. So she watched the kits as her mate provided for them. Shortly after this, Thunder Storm left to learn under his 'father' Clear Sky, at his mother Bright Storm's suggestion.

Of course, one day, Tom found where his children were being kept, and lured them away. Bumble ran to Turtle Heart who charged off immediately. When Bright Storm, Acorn Swoop, and Lightning Cry returned with the kits later, they also brought the news that their mother had died in the trip.

Patience for Bumble had run out. She couldn't hunt. She failed to stop Tom. Her mate was gone-- and she served no use in Tall Shadow's eyes.

Bright Storm herself, thinking of her own failure to save Jagged Peak, the stillbirth of Thunder Storm's littermates, and Clear Sky's opinions on the usefulness of cats, solemnly agreed. She took the side of Tall Shadow, that Bumble was to return to the town. There was no place for her, here.

Thunder Storm returned shortly after this, and ripped into them for this cruelty-- "I didn't think I'd come home to find a second Clear Sky!"

It was the beginning of ThunderClan.

The Myth: Bumble Mumble and the Rogue of Rot

ThunderClan is remembered as being founded for diplomacy, not for its stance against cruelty. Many generations after her death, Bumble is remembered with a full name-- Bumble Mumble, Bombol Mlemlaan, "Sentence Tonguetwisted," and her story has been heavily fictionalized.

In contrast to the truth, the Parable of the Rogue of Rot is a story about fearing outsiders, and introduces the concept of "babble" to kits. Though babble serves a social purpose in warning against certain types of predators (ravens, foxes, humans), it is also used as a form of bigotry against outsiders.

The story goes, so StarClan Says;

Long ago, all cats spoke the same language, and they could converse with foxes, ravens, and many other animals. Humans and their owners used this ability to do many evils together.

Turtle Heart was recruited by Bumble Mumble into her housefolk's home over a harsh winter, tempted into a life of excess. But heroically, Turtle Heart saw through these sinful ways, revealing the truth to her mate and revealing that they would pay the price for food and warmth with their kits. Thusly, they escaped the humans together.

But humans, vengeful and evil creatures, wanted their pound of flesh. So they sent their monster, the Rogue of Rot, after the couple to retrieve what they believed was theirs to own.

He very nearly succeeded. Through his clever and charming words, he lured away the kittens, and Turtle Heart fought bravely to save them. She was murdered and cast to the ground at Bumble Mumble's feet, and all seemed lost.

All she could do was cry, and cry, and cry, until the pain welled up inside her so tightly that it burst forth into a great and terrible WAIL

The spell was broken in an instant, for he no longer had the charming words to enchant the kittens. Her grief had scrambled the tongues of all the rogues and villains in the world, snatching the words from their mouths and damning them with babble in their place.

When the Rogue of Rot returned to his humans empty-pawed, he found himself unable to explain what had happened. The humans heard nothing but strange, meaningless mewls and yowls, and so banished him for his failure.

It is said that he still walks the world to this day, seeking kittens to bring back to his humans so that they might let him back in. Children and warriors alike are warned against noises that sound like words but have no meaning, your name being called in the forest in strange tones, and outsiders who speak in a strange cadence. This is what they call "Babble."

Bumble Mumble is invoked as a Patron of Communication, of language and words broadly, speech-writing, turns of phrase, and being tongue-tied. She is also featured in many stories of the Dawn Era, venerated by ThunderClan in particular, often invoked by WindClan in antiquity, but she isn't a popular patron of ShadowClan or RiverClan.

Silas Durgan, who was heard to assert that “if he chooses to show enself at fairs he’d make his fortune in no time,” and being a bit of a theologian, compared the stranger to the man with the one talent.

For those less of a theologian than Silas Durgan, the parable of the man with one talent comes from Matthew 25, where servants are entrusted with money (in the units of ‘talents’) when their master goes on a journey. All but one invest theirs and earn more, while the man with one talent buries his and returns it alone. He is called wicked and slothful and is thrown out. The interpretation of this is generally that those who are given talents/advantages/etc in life are expected to use them for good, regardless of how big or little.

And now back to context….

Silas is basically saying that this Stranger must be some unnatural freak and that it’s irresponsibly wasting God’s gifts and wickedly slothful to not exhibit himself at freak shows to utilize it.

Jesus' parables are one of the ways Jesus trains his disciples. The parables, like the sermon on the mount, have always been crucial for the church to imagine the kind of community it is called to be. We discover again and again that Jesus' parables significance points to everyday life. The parables are meant to be lived.

The original audience may have been perplexed by this story. They would have known that no-one would intentionally plant a mustard shrub. In fact, the Jewish Mishnah forbade the growing of mustard seeds in the garden because they were 'useless annoying weeds'. In the Hebrew Scriptures the "birds of the air" can be a reference to Gentiles/Non-Jews, the foreigner.

This parable suggests that the kingdom of heaven is available to everyone. Even those who may be considered outsiders or not "Worthy". Jesus is calling us to see the significance in the insignificant. The parables of the kingdom of heaven make clear that the kingdom of heaven is not "up there". Through the parables Jesus is teaching us to "be for the world the material reality of the kingdom of heaven brought down to earth." As Jesus is himself the parable of the father so the church is meant to be the parable of Christ. A people in space and time welcoming the outcast, the foreigner, and the stranger. These kind of communities will look like unwanted weeds to the world, or even to other christians. However, this may be exactly the church Jesus is asking us to embody. So ever since you got that Ronsey anon with the song rec from Penny and Sparrow, I’ve been in a rabbit hole with this band, they’re amazing.

But anyway, as I was rabbit hole-ing, I came across these two songs they wrote based on the Prodigal Son parable, with one song being from the pov of the younger brother and the other from the pov of the older brother. And they just sound so much like Ronan and Declan pre-Greywaren to me, I wonder how much of that story Maggie put into their dynamic, given all the other religious parallels in TRC. I’d love to hear your thoughts, if at all.

Holy Smokes by Anna Bates and Dungeons and Daddies but very loosely interpreted-

(underneath cut because it is Not organized but I don’t think I will organize it lmao so here it is)

I keep connecting this song to Nicky in different ways- either it’s a Nark song and Nicky is Jesus, or it’s a song about Nicky/Nick’s relationship with Glenn and Glenn is Jesus

With the second interpretation (the one I’ve been Very into the past few days, I thought of it much more recently), each of the people mentioned are a character Nicky interacts with (grandma=Grant, Holy Ghost=TJ, David and Goliath=Lark and Sparrow, the apostles=the other dads) and like. Ugh just. I’ve never been high but Nick being introduced to weed by Glenn (ik he didn’t Encourage it but he was also very much supportive of it). And it becoming such a central part of his childhood and of him growing up. The last two lines of the chorus especially. Idk makes me Sad about Nick. This is also about Nick and not Nicky they are different people.

However the first verse could very much be about Nicholas after him and Nick start sharing their body all proper and he’s mmmm Nicholas is Trying to bond with Glenn and neither Glenn nor Nick know how to properly bond outside of like weed lowkey so. Nick is like “you could try and talk to him about weed” and Nicholas is like “I have asthma but ok ig” and then ugh

They are trying so hard for Nick’s sake and none of them know how to do this. Glenn and Jodie bond a bit about Drugs (because c’mon Zhao Dae Jodie. c’mon.) and then Glenn definitely lets some of that past slip through his lips while he’s high with Nicholas. Nicholas is like the whole “all those miracles he did and all those parables he told?” and Glenn is like “they were inspired by the ganja that he regularly rolled” AUGH. AND also the second verse-

“I heard Jesus on the corner, talking to some cops Only doobie lovin' Jesus gets the law enforcement crossed”

Thursday, Seventeenth Week in Ordinary Time

First Reading Exodus 40:16-21, 34-38 The cloud covered the meeting tent and the glory of the Lord filled the Dwelling.

Moses did exactly as the LORD had commanded him. On the first day of the first month of the second year the Dwelling was erected. It was Moses who erected the Dwelling. He placed its pedestals, set up its boards, put in its bars, and set up its columns. He spread the tent over the Dwelling and put the covering on top of the tent, as the LORD had commanded him. He took the commandments and put them in the ark; he placed poles alongside the ark and set the propitiatory upon it. He brought the ark into the Dwelling and hung the curtain veil, thus screening off the ark of the commandments, as the LORD had commanded him.

Then the cloud covered the meeting tent, and the glory of the LORD filled the Dwelling. Moses could not enter the meeting tent, because the cloud settled down upon it and the glory of the LORD filled the Dwelling. Whenever the cloud rose from the Dwelling, the children of Israel would set out on their journey. But if the cloud did not lift, they would not go forward; only when it lifted did they go forward. In the daytime the cloud of the LORD was seen over the Dwelling; whereas at night, fire was seen in the cloud by the whole house of Israel in all the stages of their journey.
