BFDI stands 4 BATTLE FOR DREAM ISLAND

it is a webseries that lives in youtube!!! it has a few seasons. its an object show, in fact, the First Object Show EVER!!!!!

an object show is a show where the characters are objects with faces and limbs lolz.

Its mostly a comedic and chill series, with interesting worldbuilding if you pay attention. Though it seems to be getting serious lately with TPOT!!

On to the seasons!! I will try not to spoil.. WATCH IT!!! /nf but... please?

1: BFDI, 2: BFDI [BFDI Again, went on hiatus but came back recently] 3: IDFB [only has 1 episode? on hiatus 4ever. name is bfdi backwards]

the first seasons! ill just talk abt BFDI in here [and of BFB/TPOT in next section]

Here the contestants were battling for Dream Island! whoever wins gets to own the island which is full of cool stuff, and gets to decide who can get in

It was hosted by Announcer, a robot from space with a text 2 speech voice lol

each character has fun stuff about them and their personality or lore even... there is no bad characters in here!! And fun fact the first season was started just by a pair of twins!

4: BFB [BATTLE FOR BFDI] !!! its divided into 2 seasons technically. 4a [pre split] and 4b [post split]

Here appear... ALIEN NUMBERS!! All characters in BFDI so far were objects [except 4 David and Dora, stickman human scribble weirdthings] but these new guys are Number and Variable... FOUR AND X!

they are Weird and Mildly Unsettling, they're drawn wonky, they have wild powers and are quite random. X is nice, but Four is feared because he's quick to hurt contestants and even his best friend X. Death is common in BFDI [there are machines that revive people] but Four has New and kinda Scary ways to murder.

The prize in BFB is ... a BFDI! Yep! The first season of BFDI, plain and simple. But deepfried.

THE SPLIT AND SEASON 5: TPOT [the power of two]

Kind of a spoiler. Halfwayish through BFB, TWO ARRIVES!!

they offer Four's contestants a different prize... Their power. Their magic powers that are very cool.

Around more than half of the contestants decide to join Two's show, especially because theyre tired of Four's stuff.

Yayy...! BFB stays silly and TPOT goes more for character development and such.

Post split, Four gets a huge change. His contestants left and he feels horrible and a lot of people complain that he's whiny and terrible post split.

Onto TPOT!

Two is much nicer and doesnt murder people for fun. They're a pretty good host! This season is still ongoing btw! It really seems to be getting more serious. By BFDI standards.

CATS Suncoast Broadway Dinner Theatre - Hudson, FL (with Pics)

Thanks to Suncoast Broadway Dinner Theatre for renting our set and having us for the past two weeks in the Junkyard. It's always a delight working with Chaz, and we got to know an incredible cast and crew. I'm not sure how many hashtags I can use so I am going to include the cast list here for pics that arrive since all of you are so talented at Tumblr (the cast is so intrigued by Superfans, btw!)

We had many challenges with a dinner theatre because the stage is very small in order to accommodate tables. As well, actors serve patrons so I needed to design an outfit to protect the costumes and suspend disbelief. And from patron reactions, we've been told this is one of the best openings, if not the best opening, and the best show/costume the theatre has had to date and hoped we'd be back, which was very, very kind of them.

Mungojerrie/Macavity split track, played by Andre Spathelf-Sanders and yeah, this jerk who keeps showing up. I adore the whole cast to bits truly but we're planning on cosplaying Green Lantern together and he was the first to get my "Archer" references in the make up classes. If it's ever of interest, I'm happy to sometime talk about my make up classes and what to do when there are "mistakes" with what I call the Bob Ross Method.

Demeter by Iraya Catalina is making an argument that maybe all Demeters need to be Filipino because she slays!

Jennyanydots and her incredibly supportive husband. She was one of the most delightful people to work with, hilarious, fun, loving, amazing hugs, and just a joy. I've never had a Jenny almost refuse to take the Gumbie suit off (which is a huge compliment). What a joy.

David was the make up designer for all of the designs except Bombalurina's, and I taught about 5-hours of make up classes.

The magic of an incredible LED screen came into play as there were cool effects, such as a first person POV of a cat going to the junkyard (bringing YOU into the show) and the sky changing with the hours of the day, the moon, everything. The lighting designer Dalton Hamilton was wonderful and provided the following photographs. All costumes designed/created by David and myself (The Costume Asylum/Siegert Creative):

I am going to try to get some rehearsal pics and one of the funniest bloopers ever but I hope this is a nice start. Happy Sunday, I'm happy to be home, but I miss these kitties so much already!

The Harry Potter reboot has me really concerned . I mean, if the news about it came out during 2030 or something it would’ve been fine, but the fact it’s happening right now and JKR’s part of it is a massive turnoff for me. I know a lot of HP fans are excited about the reboot, but I have no doubt that the show’s gonna be controversial no matter what, to the point it’s making me worried for the kids who want to be part of it because they like HP.

In 2030, at least it wouldn't be one year after the previous attempt at extending the franchise crashed and burned. But I feel like that's the only reason why doing this reboot series in 2030 would be any better than doing it right now: Because right now it looks desperate. But in both cases, a massive TERF will get millions more cash to fund her efforts to vilify, dehumanize, and terrorize transgender and transsexual people worldwide. Just because David fucking Zaslav thought this would be a great way to squeeze more blood from the stone.

Y'know, if they did this without JKR's direct involvement and promised to try and "expand upon" the novels outside of her text? That would feel better to me, because A) she'd probably just get her usual tiny royalty instead of this larger salary, at least, AND B) it'd open up the possibilities of them trying to correct the material for her shitty views, like how Hogwart's Legacy at least did its best to provide positive trans representation within the Wizarding World universe.

Unfortunately.... with JKR directly involved and - more importantly - with how she's recently rewriting her own history to claim that trans people are equivalent to the Death Eaters? YEEEEEAAAH, this reboot has a STRONG potential to get REAL fucking Anti-Trans in a VERY fucking dangerous way. Don't be surprised if the Death Eater army shows up and seems coded VERY HEAVILY to be trans without explicitly saying so, is what I'm fucking saying.

BTW Anon, I'm not sure I understand your very last sentence? Or at least, I'm not sure of who you're talking about specifically. As in: Do you mean you're worried about the kids who will try to be actors/characters in the show? Or you're worried about kids who will get involved in watching it and the fandom because of it, etc?

Because... well, I agree either way actually. BUT I'm honestly more worried about the latter group. The ones who might be introduced to this world/fandom by this MAX series have real potential to be radicalized into hateful TERFs by it, especially if they're watching at young/impressionable ages like six years old or thereabouts. Dear god, at least the actors will probably be circa 10 or 11 at the start and will therefore be more capable of critical thinking than the youngest viewers will be, plus they could potentially just be there for the paycheck/exposure or whatever.

This is a VERY worrisome production, for sure. And once again, it's funny how little Rowling understands her own work.

Mmm, yes, and what if that boy was vilified and hated by family for who he was inside? What if they abused him and treated him as sub-human just for who he was internally - how he was born?

What if the family around him even tried to hide the very existence of that type of person, never once letting him know such a thing was even POSSIBLE, because they hated those people so very much, and they were so deeply afraid of him becoming one of 'them'?

What if — even after discovering his true nature and finally thriving among like-minded people — that boy was still forced to 'present' as what his family members considered to be 'normal' whenever he was around them. And as a result, every time he was forced to return to them, he became depressed and felt alone all over again, always pining to return to the place where he could REALLY be himself?

It's especially bizarre to me that someone who once spent years speaking out against the hatred and ostracization and fear thrown at our gay population can then turn around and do EXACTLY ALL OF THAT to another queer demographic.

Like: How the fuck does she not see that she's the very thing she previously hated and railed against? How the fuck.... ???

I feel like 90% of my tumblr dash these days is extremely specific complaints along the lines of

"I hate when the ultraleftists go vegan because the global south eats meat and I don't think Lenin would have supported veganism" or

"Don't protestors realize that blocking roads only counts for The Movement if the people blocking said roads are working class. Anyway read Trotsky [paragraphs upon paragraphs]" or

"Don't let the government know you read books because #praxis btw buy my books" (instagram repost) or

"When will the white anarchists stop eating bagels don't they realize that bagels are part of the mass-market industrial complex and they are literally all David Rovics" or

I wish I could ignore this stuff but it's really getting me down. And that sucks--I wish there was an xkit extension to specifically block text-only posts with over 1k notes because this stuff is exhausting and these people I follow are (generally) people who have good insight on other issues.

Going to try and manage my mental health and just unfollow anyone posting this stuff, but even though I don't personally care who is a "mutual" and who isn't (plenty of IRL friends know I'm on here and don't follow me) I don't want to hurt anyone's feelings because people will go on about "breaking mutual".

>dave works at ffp and kills children there while henry kills children at ffd

>henry fucking DIES and ffd forecloses, leading dave to work at ffp

>dave meets jack kennedy (the protag and the person you play as) at ffp

>dave negotiates with jack that since hes a "clean slate" he should help him murder five children, jack agrees and they Do That

(small note here; dave becomes obsessed with jack after this and its just a whole ordeal with jack and dave being ?? freaks and in love ?? normal behavior/sar)

>davetrap springlocks jack to give him "immortality" and they go to vegas

(note there is a tiny little voice clip of dave telling jack he loves him as he dies i just think its very interesting that the last thing dave chose to do was tell him he loved him . agony and peril)

(also i didnt know where to put this but in dsaf 2 theres a scene where jack wakes up to dave standing at the foot of his bed and they prankcall phoney (peter) together. jack tells dave to shower and dave says it is "not the first time he has been in his house"

(also also dave has a long rambling file in dsaf 2 on the computer which includes the words "old sport", a nickname he gave jack, 5000 times)

good end/saved end (warning for stalking, manipulation, and mild suicidal idealization)

>everything is the same as before but this time you decline everytime dave asks you to kill kids

(fun fact you can see daves diary in dsaf 2 and his diary entry after the day you reject him is nothing but nonsense ramblings about how he is going to kill jack and how he cant believe he would "betray him like this")

>jack finds davetrap rotting and declines taking him back to uncle jacks family diner and davetrap sobs and cries and yells about how he shouldve known he would do this to him and begins begging jack not to leave him alone

>davetrap then stalks jack home

(fun fact you can look at davetrap and jack will say "he followed me home again" implying that this isnt the first time hes noticed dave or davetrap doing this so. what the fuck. i dont know if he just did nothing about this or if he said something and dave continued but either way What The Fuck ???)

>jack goes into "the flipside" and sees dave just kind of. chilling. jack is reasonably caught off guard and they have a neat little meet-cute where dave explains the flipside is where souls come to chill because of course theres a fucking place for that god damnit

(note you can get small dave commentaries by interacting with objects like posters or things on the wall or pizzas in the kitchen and i just think its cute)

>dave makes a portal because of fucking course thats a thing you can do in the flipside i hate the flipside why can he fucking DO THAT and fuck off to the second floor

>jack and dave find dees ghost here and it revealed shes the puppet

>dee engages jack and dave in battle because she doesnt believe dave is "truly sorry" and thinks jack is making some sick joke at her expense

(note if you fail to escape from this battle dee says that you cant run from your problems forever)

>if you succeed in escaping the battle, jack explains to dave that this is his sister and dave has A Moment where he explains how henry told him he was helping the kids by killing them (its also implied that dave was groomed by henry since he states he was a "young man" when they officially met and started working together)

>dee decides hes just kind of. pathetic honestly. and decides she can live with this if it means she can save the dead ghosts

>jack fucks off back to the reality and does reality shenanigans like running his business

>he comes back and they go into a portal to the second floor

>on the third floor we meet steven whos been just kind of. there. the entire time. and he INSTANTLY assumes theyre there to kill him and makes them battle foxy robotss until they find him huddled in a corner

>he instantly starts rambling about how he cant be saved and how thhey should just leave him (its implied that by this he means hes going to?? die if they leave him?? as if he isnt already dead??) because he was a terrible person to jack, peter, and dave

>jack says thats in the past or whatever and he joins their team

>dave makes another portal and this time steven goes nuts and is fucking furious about hating the flipside (me too man. me fucking too)

Graeber talks about bullshit jobs, what they are, where they come from, and what can be done about it. A short summary:

Bullshit jobs are jobs that often are paid well and enjoy a certain amount of respect, but do not add anything to the work environment or society. If it were to disappear, it would make no difference, and it would often make the world a better place. Think of corporate lawyers, consultants, telemarketers, many managerial jobs.

Bullshit jobs are detrimental to job satisfaction and can alienate the worker, leading to, for example, depression or bore-outs.

With technology and automation, we could be working 15 hour workweeks. In feudal Europe, during the harvest season peasants would work 12 hours a day, in the off seasons just two or three. Many societies today do not work more than three or four hours per day. But instead of decreasing the oppressive and demanding 40 hour workweek we kept inventing bullshit jobs.

A part of that is what is seen as valuable work. If you are producing, you are doing valuable work. If you are caring, or cleaning, most often performed by women btw, you are not doing 'valuable' work, even though if all carers and cleaners were to stop, society would grind to a halt.

Another part of it is unions. They (well-meaningly) constantly demand more jobs. They proliferate the puritarian idea that you have to work to earn your wages. That is also why it is so hard to refuse them: they are asking to be allowed to earn their keep. But to keep up with this job demand, bullshit jobs keep needing to be invented.

A solution is to re-imagine work as [...] the material extension of caring. Caring is any action ultimately directed towards maintaining or increasing another person, or another person's freedom. People need to be free to decide for themselves how they want to contribute.

alright, so i'm planning on injesting mostly horror media this October (as is usual for me) and i've decided to document my experiences all month starting now.

so, first is Deadly Premonition. i've played this all the way through before and played it partially many times. i'm now replaying it, switching off control with a person i'm dating. we're talking OG btw, not the director's cut (which i want to play, but still haven't due to not having a pc yet)

to me, this is the perfect video game equivalent of a so-bad-it's-good movie.

these ones are, arguably, not horror in any conventional sense, but i'm counting them anyway:

Naked Lunch (novel) by William S Burroughs is a deranged and surreal piece loaded with social commentary, sexual violence, and slurs. when reading it, i found myself baffled and repulsed. i couldn't discern if what i was listening to was just being edgy or utilizing shocking language and imagery to communicate a point. however, after getting all the way through the book and doing some cursory research on Boroughs himself, i find myself with an understanding and appreciation of the piece. it's a literary classic for good reason, and i would never reccomend it to anyone.

Quality: 8/10

Fun: 4/10

Scares: 9/10

Naked Lunch (movie) by David Cronenberg is an interesting blend of elements of the novel and elements from William S. Boroughs' real life. it is in conversation with the original text and its author in a way very fitting to Boroughs.

Ian and Mickey are two cops deep undercover investigating an organised crime ring in Chicago. The pressure of their jobs is intense, and they find themselves hooking up. Is it just because they can only be themselves around each other? Or are they falling in love?

Ian picks up some extra cash as a male model for an art class, Mickey is one of the students. Ian finds he can’t keep his eyes off the grumpy, nervous artist. When the teacher suggests Mickey enter some work for an art competition, Ian volunteers to model for him.

Ian and Mickey are security guards at Chicago’s most prestigious history museum. They are both new to the job, and they spend their evenings patrolling through the museum together. Also, they are the worlds worst security guards who touch all the things that say ‘don’t touch’.

Shameless x Schitt’s Creek crossover. Ian and Mickey move into an apartment block in Chicago and meet their next door neighbours, David and Patrick, who have just moved to town. David meets Mickey first and it doesn’t go well....

Ian’s cat goes missing, he’s devastated and searches everywhere, putting up posters. After two weeks, he fears the worst. Nearby, Mickey is reluctantly looking after a cat he thinks is a stray. Just as he starts to think he will keep the cat, he sees the lost cat posters. He returns the cat to Ian. But the cat has other ideas, and keeps returning to Mickey.

Ian and Mickey meet while doing jury duty. Mickey spends the whole time talking about how stupid the guy is for getting caught, and not taking anything seriously. Ian is nominated as the foreman and gets annoyed with Mickey, especially when Mickey is the one person who votes the opposite of everyone else. It causes them to be sequestered in a hotel, where Ian and Mickey end up sharing a room, and Ian thinks Mickey just wanted that to happen to get a free hotel stay, but it turns out he really does believe in his vote.

Ian gets the phone number from a hot guy he meets at a bar one night. But when he texts him the next day, with a cute selfie and a flirty message about enjoying meeting him the night before, it turns out he’s got the wrong number. Mickey doesn’t know why he’s getting a selfie and a message from a hot redhead. Although Mickey tells him he’s texting the wrong person, Ian doesn’t seem that bothered (maybe he texts something stupid and awkward like “oh well, nevermind. unless you’re also a hot, single gay guy who wants to talk to me? hahaha” which he instantly regrets. But the thing is...Mickey kinda does want to talk to him....)

So I have to just talk about this episode for a second and how out of sorts it felt to me. I have a lot of feelings and I just need to get them out and throw them into the void. I still have my rewatches to do, of course, but I truly am trying to connect some of these events to the characters' overall stories and basic logic.

Let me just start out with I think we're in a very good place with Buddie. But everything outside of that? Whoa.

I'm not saying the episode was bad. It was meant to be intense, a closeup to the chaos arc, and a lot was going on. But did anyone else feel like some things were...not fitting well? The resolution we got to Athena's situation with Hudson and of course thankfully Harry is safe, it all played out well I thought. Though the circumstances around it felt a bit odd to me.

For example, Michael who was married to Athena for such a long time knows she's not going to wait at home, but didn't once think that during a blackout, it might be a good idea to keep track of who is walking in the front door? I get it, be helpful to your neighbors, a very nice thing to do, but how do you know someone walking around the neighborhood won't take advantage of that fact? And not even in the whole they'll eat your food or possibly knock off something kind of way but in a this-person-could-be-potentially-dangerous-to-everyone kind of way. That felt like an odd choice of common sense to not only have Michael being dismissive of but to then call attention to it twice, once of Harry being the one to call Hudson out on not knowing who he is and then showing Hudson helping himself to a drink while Michael and David are having a drink in the background, laughing and talking, only paying attention to each other. And then to have Michael turning around and getting angry at Athena for not telling him that Hudson was on the loose (when she only figured out mere minutes beforehand that she might be a target) so he would have been on the lookout and wouldn't have let their neighbors in...it just felt so off to me. Not that parents wouldn't snap at each other in that situation, not that Michael wouldn't feel guilty and was probably lashing out, but I don't know how else to put it, it just felt off. The only thing I can think of is that due to the writer being Kristen Reidell is that this situation will be revisited at some point with Harry and Michael.

Then you have Maddie's disappearing act. I get that JLH is taking time for her family behind the scenes but I guess I'm a little confuzzled as to why they chose to do it this way? What was wrong with Maddie being checked into a treatment center to get the help she needs? And when I say being checked into, I mean her checking herself in. Leaving Jee-Yun at the station with Ravi and taking off, not even talking directly to Chimney (I get it, his phone was dead, but still) or Buck, that just feels incredibly off. And her leaving like that is really off for her character. I get it, she is suffering from PPD, but still. It would have been a more positive message I think to have her check herself into a treatment center, with the support of Chimney and Buck and those who love her, rather than have her dump the baby at the firestation and run. I'm sure the writers have a plan and I do trust in it, but I do wish they had thought about the message choosing that action sends. This isn't the 50's, there are multiple resources to help mothers suffering from PPD. But ever since it was confirmed Maddie had PPD, it kind of felt like we were back in the 50's and no one talks about it. I just didn't care for the way that was handled if I'm being completely honest.

Eddie and Ana's breakup. While I'm not too broken up over this, no pun intended, I did find their handling of it to be a bit odd. Don't get me wrong, it was a very good scene for Eddie and it was more emotional than I expected it to be (I think some of us have been where Ana was in a relationship and can be somewhat empathetic to her plight), but Eddie not talking to Christopher? Us not seeing Ana saying goodbye to Christopher? It's almost as if Christopher got relegated to the background. I mean, I get it, this was about Eddie and his relationship with Ana, and of course he threw up the Christopher shield again. "Chris loves you so much." But to have Christopher there in the beginning, to have Eddie say that to Ana in front of Christopher but then try to back track, then to move right in for the kill after closing the door, I don't know man, it just felt off to me. It was good to see Eddie make his decision, a decision we all saw coming to be quite frank. But the way it did, I don't know, it just felt extremely off.

Buck and Maddie - where tf did this sibling relationship go? Like seriously. We never saw a phone call or a text (which didn't require both actors to shoot) when Eddie got shot. We only see Maddie interacting with Chim about it. Then we never see Buck finding out about her PPD (that we know of). During the chaos, Buck never even asks about her (that I can remember). The only mention we get of Jee-Yun is during the power czar scene in 5x02. I get it, Buck is in a new relationship, but as we've seen so far, it's not all it's cracked up to be and he's not twitterpated so to speak. He still has a life outside of Taylor and vice versa. So wtf? (this is why I usually binge everything once it's aired btw for all other shows, I can't watch some of these live but I couldn't wait, I needed to know how my 911 faves are doing!!!)

The only thing I can think is that we've seen Bobby's earthquake (I think it really hit this episode with Harry's kidnapping and Athena's standoff with Hudson), Chim's bombs hitting (with Maddie running off), and some of Eddie's mudslide (I have a feeling that there may be a reaction from Christopher, maybe not a strong one, but something after this episode, especially since we didn't see Chris' reaction this one or Eddie even talking to him about it). The only people we're still waiting on is Hen's having an emergency (which if people's predictions for 5x07 are right, then there you go) and Buck's tsunami. This is truly going to be the season that shakes this team up. The ransomware attack and blackout may be over but I don't think the chaos is if I'm being honest. Not in our characters' arcs for this season.

Even though Buck's reaction to Chim in the promo for 5x04 about Maddie is hurting my heart, I'm hoping Chim tells him then and that snaps things into perspective really quick. And of course, I'm looking forward to more Uncle Buck time. <3

Firstly, thank you for the tip about the stills!

(I will say quickly that I don't see Jefferson as any kind of informant. He couldn't leave the town for starters, and he barely seemed to leave his mansion. That man was waaaaaay too troubled with his own problems and I don't think he would have the time or care to worry about outsiders like August.)

ANYWAY. So...He obviously went to Jefferson's, talked with him at the door (ignoring for a moment the question of what they were talking about), then left and returned a little while later. (btw I love the whole 'trying to lie to an even bigger liar' thing).

I totally think that both August and Jefferson would have been keeping an eye on one another. It's never really revealed where August gets any of his information from or where he got his storybook pages from, because i don't believe for a second that he actually wrote those himself, but it's totally possible that he could have found out about Jefferson and who he was in the EF. So yeah, tracking him to a bar or something...I could see it happening. And I can ALSO see Jefferson discovering that a stranger has appeared in town and, knowing full well that people can't leave or enter Storybrooke, he could naturally assume that August is from the EF as well. Either way, the pair of them being in contact with one another...kind of makes sense.

However.

My personal theory is that Emma called/texted him. Because in the episode, Emma tells Jefferson that she's 'called for backup'. Jefferson calls her bluff, saying that she hasn't called anyone because she doesn't want anyone to know that she's here (because of Mary Margaret), but...Emma doesn't confirm or deny this accusation. Aside from Mary Margaret herself, August is kind of the closest person she has to a friend right now. They've talked enough that, hey, maybe she feels like she can trust him with something like this?

So she does call him, despite what Jefferson thinks. And he comes to try and rescue her.

The issue now once again circles back to the conversation August and Jefferson had at the door, and whether or not either of them revealed any information about the EF and who they really were. And that...well, that's something that has been bugging YOU for years, has been bugging ME for years, and I think it'll continue to bug a few of us for a while to come. :'))))

(but yes, I also like to pretend he was there to help Emma, even if in my heart I'm still not certain that he was.)

hi!! first of all i just wanted to say i really appreciate your blog (and your instagram too!). your thoughts have provided me great comfort. anytime i see another queer, leftist, christian my heart fills with joy!! i think: ‘oh! there are other people like me!! there are so many wonderful people out here who love God and are accepting and supportive and loving!’ so thank you- for making me feel less alone and for giving me hope. thank you for existing and just being you- it means more than you know (especially as a young (only 15) queer christian). was scrolling through your blog this morning (on holy saturday) and i started crying. i’m not sure why. because i was overwhelmed with love for god? because i am confused about religion and things? idk but it was a weirdly intense feeling- like a cry i needed. anyways, i hope you are having a wonderful day and that your easter is full of love and hope and all the wonderful things!

i did have a few questions for you (i guess they’re questions?? or just asking for your opinion). no pressure to respond btw

1) (i’m a lesbian) and i’m afraid i’ll never find another queer girl who loves God/is christian/is religious who will also love me. i want to have a relationship with someone who not only understands the struggle of being a queer christian, but someone who can help me learn and grow in my faith. i’m just afraid that i’m asking too much and i’ll never find that.

2) i often feel ashamed(?) of being a christian. even though i am one, whenever i hear “christian” i don’t think of very nice and accepting people. i feel like people like you are in the minority(?). and so i almost never talk about my religion or anything because i am afraid people will assume I am homophobic/transphobic/racist/misogynistic/slut shaming. i feel bad for feeling this way though.

3) (last one 😅 ) what is the difference between religion and spirituality? and how can i, as a christian, explore spirituality?

I’m finally answering this so thank you for your patience! I relate so much to that joy of finding someone else like us— it’s exactly what I felt when I discovered queer Christian communities online! I’m so happy that I can give you that comfort and recognition— it’s all I want. I’m sorry I made you cry but I hope it was what you needed and I’m so happy you’re processing and stuff! Being overwhelmed and confused are two emotions I am intensely familiar with. 

I had a lovely Easter, thank you! I hope yours was wonderful as well <3 Thanks for numbering your questions :) This is perfect, and here are some answers/thoughts:

1) I relate! And I’m sure so many others do too! When religion is important in your life, it can be hard to find someone who’s on the same page. And when you’re queer, that adds a whole ‘nother layer, doesn’t it? My last relationship (and my only serious one) is a testament to the fact that there is hope! She was an absolutely lovely lesbian Christian and we talked about faith a lot. She really changed how I thought about faith and even though we’re not together anymore (for tragic backstory/mental health reasons), I still hold close the spiritual growth I went through with her! There are people out there to connect with, even if being queer can be a really lonely experience. I met her through Lex, which is a really cool app. :) Also, we’re both so young! There’s so much beautiful time for us to grow and meet new people, and I have hope for both of us. <3 You know what you want, and you deserve that. Wishing you luck!

2)THIS THIS THIS! Listen, every time I’m in a queer or progressive space, this goes through my mind. And there have been people who’ve assumed I’m all manner of horrible things when they learn I’m Christian! I talked about a similar situation in this ask. Religion is a super hard topic for a lot of minorities, and I always have to remember to respect that anger/trauma, as well as standing up for myself and my beliefs. There are reasons that those stereotypes exist, and also harmful consequences from those stereotypes. A few things: There are a lot more of us than we think. Since I’ve been open about stuff on social media, so many religious people have admitted to me they’re queer, and so many queer people have admitted they’re religious! There are so many people who just don’t talk about one or both of these facets of their identities because of the reception they might get in both religious and queer spaces. You don’t have to feel bad for this. You don’t have to feel bad for not opening up about every part of yourself (especially to strangers/acquaintances). No one has a right to your identities/beliefs! These are things for you to talk about when/if you're comfortable with. That said, the best way to combat these stereotypes about Christianity is to be a Christian and a loving/accepting person. People have told me that I've changed their idea of what being a Christian is, or that they'd never met a "nice" Christian before. Obviously that's a lot of pressure, and not everyone is called to be that representation. But the more openly queer Christians there are in the world, the more we can fight those stereotypes! Go at your own speed, and it might not be till later in your life/journey (or never!) that you become more open, and that's okay. I pray that you encounter accepting people in your life that are open to learning new things about groups of people!

3) Generally, religion is organized/external, and spirituality is informal/internal. So religion tends to based on historical figures and religious texts, with formal rituals and houses of worship, while spirituality tends to be more experience-based and personal, without a set of defined beliefs. Many people describe themselves as "spiritual but not religious," meaning they connect to a faith/practice or have their own personal belief system, but don't go to church/belong to an organized religion. Christianity as an institution and set of beliefs is a religion, but many Christians have some kind of spiritual practice, and some off-sets/teachings within Christianity are spirituality-based (like mysticism). Not all Christians connect with spirituality, though— my dad, for instance, always jokes that he's "religious but not spiritual." There is room for both, though! And I think it's really healthy so have both external and internal sources for your faith.

Ideas for exploring spirituality as a Christian: meditate on scripture, connect with nature, read/research saints who participated in spirituality/mysticism (x), journal

SUGIZO talkes about how he met his friends and why was it important to him now to release a live album

SUGIZO is releasing the first live album in his solo career, 'LIVE IN TOKYO', on September 30th. This work delivers the two day birthday performance 'SUGIZO 聖誕半世紀祭～HALF CENTURY ANNIVERSARY FES.～' that was held last year on July 7th and August 2nd at Nakano Sunplaza, giving you a chance to not only enjoy the live atmosphere but also the magnificent collaboration with his sworn musician friends.

It's a masterpiece I'd love many people to listen to, but it might be surprising to people who only know SUGIZO from LUNA SEA and X JAPAN and not his solo work.

In this interview we will get to the bottom of it, discussing the live album, the foundations of SUGIZO's solo work and his music, and the history with the artists who joined the project.

ー It's the first time in your career you're releasing a live album, which is very unusual now that the video releases are so common. You were that happy with how those 2 days turned out?

I was planning to release a live album from before. I heard from my staff they wanted to release the material from this half century celebration, but because I've released live video works so many times I thought it's time to change my approach.

I feel that young people nowadays are not really familiar with live albums. These times we can easily watch live videos everywhere including YouTube. But back in our childhood the live album from the artist we were indulging in was a real prize. For me it was YMO, JAPAN and PiL. Miles Davids or Frank Zappa also had quite a few live releases. And, Deep Purple or Peter Framptom also had famous live albums, even as I wasn't influenced by them. With such artists, live albums in 70s and 80s were treated as extremely valuable. I have a lot of admiration for those times, so I was hoping to eventually be able do it myself.

－ I see. Before we talk about the content, I wanted to ask you when did you encounter the so called psychodelic trance music that is the foundation of your solo music?

In the mid 90s. First, I was really into hardcore techno or minimal techno in early 90s, speaking of the ambient world like The Orb or 808 STATE, I really love the scene of that time. And few years later, at the same time when I started my solo activity, European drum n bass or abstract hip hop were very popular, I was quite influenced by the club culture and music around then, and then naturally I gave myself to trance.

The first rave I went to see was Vision Quest in 2001, and from then I got even more into it. The feeling of life in the perfectly linked music and the flow of universe, like dancing with the rising sun and chilling in the afternoon, my instincts were telling me that people had a connection with this kind of music from the ancient times. Not the music from the cities, the music with roots in nature. Kind of primitive music. I found great value for music there.

◆Then they discuss JUNO REACTOR, learning what kind of rhythm feels good, how working with a South African percussion team Amampondo helped them grow spiritually, especially thanks to the drummer Mabi, SUGIZO's chase of the 'black groove' to finally understand East has its own good points; he can be proud as Japanese and SUGIZO's solo activity reflects everything he's learnt.

meeting Kyo（DIR EN GREY/sukekiyo)

－ Remarkably for each of two days you invited guest vocalists. All of them are musicians you're very familiar with, could you tell us first about how you got to know Kyo (from DIR EN GREY/sukekiyo)?

From the start I was close with some people they know and their staff members. So I went to see their show and we were introduced. It was surprisingly recently, like around 2005 or 2006.

－ What was your impression when you saw DIR EN GREY for the first time?

It was the first time I felt threatened by a younger band. I'm sorry for saying this, but I haven't felt threatened or impacted by any of the younger artists, within this genre. That's why I was quite surprised with how great they are. What they're expressing, their worldview are incredible. At that time I could feel that their performance or sound are not there yet, but I could already feel the intensity of what was pouring out of them, the endless possibilities.

I was especially looking at Kyo thinking 'he's a genius'. There's no theory or detailed reasoning with him. He's just doing things by instinct. But he's good with words, good at drawing, as an artist he can express himself in so many different ways. Then, when I met him in person he was just so pure and innocent, doesn't it seem like he's not greedy at all? So it was a shock of 'a genius like this exists?'.

－ It was Kyo who wrote the lyrics for your collaboration song 'Zessai', was it a request from you?

Yes. Thinking to sing the best it'd be better if that person writes the lyrics, and when I asked [Kyo] he happily did. When I sent him a 2nd stage Mix demo asking 'it will be like this, what do you think?', he already had the singing (melody) put in. And the lyrics have been done too, when I asked 'woah, that's the actual thing?', he replied 'yup, I've done them'. It's the same with DIR. Thus, he's a genius. When an image comes to his mind he cannot wait. It all felt so fast. He's really a phenomenal creator.

－ How was the performance at the Half Century Anniversary?

I felt he definitely is someone who follows his instincts. When you stand on the stage and things get serious it totally doesn't matter if you're younger or older (as in how long you've been working in a music business). Of course there was no stage fright, I felt as a performer he's just huge, and at the same time it felt like there was mutual respect. It felt like it would be a waste to let it just finish like that. That's why I'm very happy that we can release the collaboration from the stage [on the live album].

◆Next, they talk about TERU and TAKURO (from GLAY), followed by Kiyoharu (I'm skipping here a lot)◆

－Kiyoharu said 'I've performed on various stages so I can't imagine myself losing, but when playing together with SUGIZO the pressure is very different'. Often when two different performers stand on stage together sparks will fly.

The same thing can be said about RYUICHI and SUGIZO, the spark/heat of the collision of a guitarist and a vocalist is often very attractive. In a way there's also the aesthetics of traditional rock, that the combination of Kiyoharu and SUGIZO might be able to embody this spark's attractiveness. That's why the collision on the stage makes me shudder, but also it's possible to blend together. With [the combination of] Kyo and SUGIZO there's no blending together, it feels different. And with TAKURO・TERU we're different type of people. When Kiyoharu is on stage I feel he's the same species as me.

－ It's interesting that the character of all those three groups of musicians is totally different.

That's true. I think it's amazing I could have a line-up like that, it's really by chance that they are my good friends coming from the same genre.

◆they finish the interview talking about the sound and working with Dub Master X, sound mixing for the album, SUGIZO wants the live sound to have intimate, close feeling◆

一 So how was it to complete a live album without compromising on anything?

It's a live album, but it it makes me feel like I was able to create a 'SUGIZO's Best Album'. 2 years I go I released what was meant to be my biggest compilation, but obviously the sound from the studio and from the concert have totally different types of energy. As someone who's been performing on the stage for a very long time, I'm really glad to able to pack that energy for the first time officially on an album. Of course live performance has less precision than the studio album, but performance has way more energy.

Another thing is that as you know it is difficult now to perform due to the pandemic. I haven't played live for half a year, when thinking about it, it's the first time in my music career to not play any shows for this long. That's why I'm really yearning for the stage performance, the live show. When I was still doing them it was something obvious, but now that I can't, making this album made me keenly aware how important concerts are in my life and how much I need them; and to tell the truth working on this live album was like saving myself in a way. Obviously a live album can't rival the real thing. Not even a live dvd nor a live stream can match the excitement of being there [at the show], but I worked on this album hoping to let you feel at least some percent of that feeling. At any rate, I'm really grateful to be able to create a work like a live album that inspired me so much as a child.
