Dazai Osamu x reader
💌 Reading into the palms of isekai bullshit:
Chapter 1  💌
Summary:   You were no stranger to isekai bullshit. It’s not like you had a problem with it. The genre took over the anime scene for years now but you try to stay away from thinking about how you would handle the situation. The last time you thought about inserting yourself into your favorite show you wrote a 100k word xReader fic for your favorite characters and you didn’t want to spend all your time consumed by the brainrot again. Never again, you promised yourself that was the last time you’d let the devil on your shoulder win. You clicked on chapter 1 to start the adventure over again but when you opened your eyes and saw Dazai O-FUCKING-samu getting choked by Kunikida you honestly hoped it was a dream.
Notes: Another isekai so I can play around with BSD like dolls.

"Nooooooo!” you screamed, throwing your phone down. Today was the day the new Bungo Stray Dogs chapter was supposed to be posted. It was but you weren’t happy about it. You finished reading it in record speed since they left both of your favorite characters in a pretty heavy cliffhanger only to shift the perspective to someone else. It wasn’t a bad chapter, you just didn’t like the idea that you’d now have to wait another month. You sighed falling back on to your bed. The waiting was nothing new but your brain wanted more. More adventures, more side stories, heck at this point you might as well reread the damn thing. You’ve been scrolling through tumblr reading as many plot analysis and character breakdowns to the point where you feel like you know everyone like the back of your hand. Everyone feels so real to you like you’ve known them all your life, almost like in another life you were all friends or maybe you were a part of the agency. You laughed to yourself as you picked your phone back up. The rain outside would be nice ambient noise to start the manga over once again.
You were no stranger to isekai bullshit. The soft pitter patter of the rain brought you back from your thoughts as you clicked on chapter 1 to start the adventure over again.
“Dazai I swear if this was one of your planed double suicides I’m going to kill you!” a voice rang out. You could still feel the cold sensations of floating in water. What were you doing a moment ago and why did those voices sound familiar to you? The last thing you remember was starting over your beloved manga from chapter 1. You didn’t leave the house and none of your friends had keys to get in. Why were there people in your bedroom and why do you feel cold and wet?
“I assure you if it was, me and this lovely lady would already be dead but unfortunately Atsushi here ruined that miracle for me.”
You choked, it finally hit you. You did, in fact, recognize those voices “D-Dazai?” When your vision came too you were in Atsushi’s lap as Kunikida was shaking his partner. This couldn’t be real. No this had to be a dream. Dammit you could see it now, once you woke up you were going to write another Stray Dogs isekai. You internally groaned. What have you done?
“Ah so sleeping beauty’s awake!” Dazai tapped the blonde’s wrist to get his attention. “Kunikida as a gentleman you should ask her if she’s alright and stop strangling me.”
Reluctantly the blonde did as he was told and let go, gracefully kneeling in front of you “Are you alright my colleague said you were floating in the river?” his eyes were full of concern. It made a warm feeling bloom throughout your body. Honestly you could get used to this. Wait, did he just say you were floating in the river?
You looked dazed, glancing around to see the familiar riverbank that Atsushi starts at during the very beginning of Bungo Stray Dogs. You looked at your hands. You were still wearing the same clothes you had before you remember falling asleep, admittedly they were much soggier than you remember but you had no memory of how you ended up in the river. Just from the small scene in front of you this was how episode 1 started. If you played along maybe you’d eventually wake up. You’ve had lucid dreams before, it wasn’t too far fetched but the ache in your heart didn’t want you to wake up. Finally you looked up at Kunikida who was patiently waiting for your answer but before you could respond your stomach growled. How embarrassing, now it really was like how the episode played out.
Dazai keeled over laughing “I guess introductions can wait till we get something to eat, how about that?” He offered you a hand over his partner's shoulder to help you up. You snapped out of your haze staring at it a moment before you grabbed his hand and said “I think that’s for the best.”
What have you gotten yourself into?
At dinner Atsushi spent no time at all stuffing his face as Kunikida and Dazai bantered back and forth. Dialogue you remembered from when you watched the show originally. You forgot how furious Kunikida was over the whole ordeal and you felt bad knowing what Atsushi was going to say next. He really needed a hug and you know what you can finally do that with your circumstances but maybe not right now.
“I came to Yokohama straight from the orphanage. I’ve had nothing to eat and nowhere to sleep since. I thought I’d starve to death.”
“You came from an orphanage?” Dazai questioned. He was sitting across from you casually and despite being hungry you noticed that he didn’t order anything to eat. You had ordered one out of solidarity. You’ve always wanted to try tea on rice but never bothered trying to find a place that makes it in your area. Atsushi was already on his twelfth bowl or so as he continued the conversation.
“I was yes but they kicked me out.”
“Sounds like a real philanthropic organization.” Dazai turned his attention from Atsushi to you “How about you? Remember anything now?” He rested his head on the back of his hands. You wanted to hold them.
You nodded looking down at your hands. That’s when you got an idea. “I think my name is (Y/N), (Y/N) (L/N). Still trying to work out how I got in the river but,” you paused raising your hands to your face slightly. Your mom had read tons of books about palm reading. Maybe this could be your chance to use what little knowledge you remember to your advantage. “I don’t know this might sound silly but do you mind if I see your hands?”
Dazai tilted his head to the side before he offered you his palms “What brought this on?” You pretended to inspect the lines ghosting over them with your fingers tracing some of them lightly. “When I looked at my hands I had this voice in my head that told me that I could read palms. Mine were kind of fuzzy so I wanted to see if I could read someone else’s” You pretend to see flashbacks, blinking and tensing up for added effect. He played along, chuckling to himself “Well what do you see?”
You forced a careful expression on your face slowly sparing him a glance “A lot you’d rather I not say out loud.” You move to hold his hands in yours giving him a loving squeeze and smile “Odasaku would be proud of you though.” The look he gave you was sharp, his lips in a tight line hearing the name. Before either of you could really finish the exchange Kunikida piped up.
“Dazai we’re not a couple of do good-ers going around helping hard luck cases. We’ve got a job to do.” Kunikida nudged the other with his book. He clearly didn't believe in your charade. You could fix that “Actually I have a feeling I might be able to help with your case if you let me see your hands too.” He gave you a wary look as you made grabby hands at him “Please I swear I’ll explain once I see everyone’s hands.” Dazai gave him a cautious expression but Kunikida gave in. Probably to get it over with so he could go back to work. This time you didn’t try to trace patterns on his palm like you did to Dazai. “Wow, I’ve never seen someone so traumatized by the color blue before.” as he made a choked noise, you turned to Atsushi. “Okay your turn.”
“Do I have too?”
“Yes, otherwise I’ll be missing a piece of the puzzle and Kunikida and Dazai might think I'm a threat." Atsushi slowly presented them to you. "You see, they're with the Armed Detective Agency and currently they're looking for a white tiger. You know the one that's been "chasing" you." You said "chasing" in air quotes letting go of his hands to do the gesture making sure to give a nod to Dazai about the tiger thing.
In Atsushi’s panic he knocked over his chair and a couple of bowls as he tried to crawl away. You watched the scene play out as Kunikida pinned him to the floor and the interrogation started. You sat patiently as Atsushi was then asked if he was free to be bait. Dazai hadn't taken his eyes off of you letting Kunikida handle Atsushi. Maybe you did go too heavy handed into this.
“Forget it no way!”
You tried to ignore Dazai's gaze and laughed at Atsushi’s outburst trying to lighten the mood. “I don’t know Atsushi. If it’s after you I feel like this is the perfect opportunity to get it off your back for good. What if I tagged along? Strength in numbers right?” He stood up and defended himself “That doesn’t make it better! I’m not doing this okay. I know what you’re thinking, you’re planning to use me as bait-”
“There’s a reward you know.”
From there Atsushi’s fate was sealed and you all made your way over to the warehouse. You waited around for hours, everyone keeping to themselves. You spent the time trying to plan out how you'd explain yourself to Dazai. You could still feel his cautious gaze on you despite him reading his book. You’ve always wanted his attention but not like this. You especially didn't want to be on his shit list. As soon as Atsushi opened his mouth you sighed in relief.
 Finally, it's showtime.
It’s not like you’d actually be of any help, you just needed to make sure you didn’t die or get in the way. “Guess that’s my cue to leave, I’ll go find Kunikida and the others.” Dazai only smirked and continued to monologue to Atsushi who would not remember the speech later. You casually strode out of the warehouse seeing the others already surrounding the building, hearing the ruckus inside. You didn’t speak, only waved them in as you made your way back to Dazai seeing that the dust had already settled and Atsushi was already on the ground. After everyone else got to take a jab at him the brunette finally spoke.
“I’ve already made my decision. We’re going to make them one of us.” Dazai’s stare made you freeze up. It makes sense to you, keep your friends close but your enemies closer. Not that you were his enemy but you've already proven you don't have an ability. Your little trick worked on him so you weren't gifted and that probably was the worse part. He doesn't know what your intentions are nor what the extent of your talents were and he couldn’t nullify you even if he tried. He was probably evaluating your level of threat to him, the agency or both.
His eyes were staring into your soul. It was so alluring but you couldn't help the fear that was settling in knowing what he was capable of. Well part of it was fear and part of it was intrigue. Why did he have to also be so damn attractive. Your face felt hot but you couldn't look away. You dug your grave now you'd have to lay in it. The whole way back to the dormitory he was guiding you from the small of your back. In any other circumstance the presence of his hand on such a place would have you swooning because that is peak protective boyfriend behavior but instead it was almost threatening like he was trying to make sure you couldn’t run away. However another part of your brain, the demented part, was screaming louder than any of the other voices in your head because it finally hit you that holy shit they were here. This all felt so real and you were playing with fire.
You made sure to keep up with what was happening, keeping your emotions in check enough to make sure your face or your body language didn’t give anything away. You and Atsushi were given some spare clothes and a cell phone. They only had one room available right now since the other one was being used as storage. They would have it cleared in a day or two. Atsushi tried to give the available one to you but Dazai stepped in and assured him that he'd personally see to it that you were taken care of. Kunikida was actually surprised that Dazai was willing to put in some level of work settling the accommodations. Little does he know what the brunette had in mind. It sent shivers down your spine for all the wrong reasons. When everything was settled Dazai opened the door to his apartment gesturing for you to go inside.
Once you stepped in you took off the shoes the agency just gave you. You had almost forgotten that when you woke up at the river, just like Atsushi, you didn't have any shoes on. No one questioned your strange attire either but you guess after everything they’ve seen it wasn’t the weirdest thing they’ve experienced in their lifetimes. Standing at the doorway to the small room you were waiting for Dazai to direct you where to set your new things down. His futon was still spread out on the floor and the table near its side still had the slight mess of empty bottles and cans. Once you heard the sound of the door’s lock you swallowed hard unintentionally snapping you back to the gravity of the situation. You were alone in a room with ex demon prodigy, Osamu Dazai.
"You can put that over in the corner." His voice rang in your ear. He was looming over you. He didn't even make a sound crossing the room; he just appeared behind you in a second. You did as you were told, trying to calm down your increasing heart rate. You knelt down to set it on the floor but as you stood back up you staggered back against the wall with Dazai towering over you again.
"You want to tell me who you really are?" He smiled carefree as if he wasn't using his height to corner you. You took a breath relaxing against the wall. His hands were behind his back yet you felt trapped. "I don't work for anyone if that's what you're getting at. I didn't lie about who I was earlier but I didn't need you to show me your hands. Technically I already saw it when you offered to help me up, that is, your past with the port mafia. I genuinely didn't know that was something I could do. That's why I asked to see your palms a second time, it didn’t sit right with me. That's why I asked for you to willingly give me your hands. I'm sorry I brought up oda but it was either him or the hot redhead you call hat rack." You gave him a knowing look that you made the right choice of who to name drop.
He grimaced when you called Chuuya hot. It seemed mentioning him caused him to lose all hostility in his demeanor. Interesting. He must believe you then. "So what do you know?" Dazai seemed to relax enough to sit on the futon. You followed after him since the tension dispersed. "Well since this bit," you moved to grab his hand to point out the part of his palm "is covered in bandages. I only know generally how you met Mori to the present day. I don’t know everything, just little blips here and there that were significant. I didn't look at Kunikida for that long but the Azure king popped up and I knew Atsushi was the tiger all along. Although it wasn't my place to get involved the way I did. Again I apologize." You caressed his hand with your thumb. He was watching you like a hawk. You were looking down thinking if there was anything else you should mention. Hopefully this was enough.
He hummed taking it in for a second before he pulled your arm while pushing your shoulder back, pinning you underneath him. "Are you scared of me? Knowing what I've done." He smirked playfully but his eyes were serious. If he wanted to play games you knew how to combat him. Or at least you think this would be an adequate counter to whatever he was doing now. You smiled "Quite the opposite. I trust you with every fiber of my being." Your words caused his eyes to dilate and his body to tense before he situated himself to further hover over your shorter frame. "Really now, even like this?" His expression dripped with lust as he dipped to whisper in your ear "I could have my way with you if I wanted." An empty threat clearly.
"You definitely could but you won't." You said it so matter of factly he shifted to look at you again. You used your freehand to caress his cheek giving him a soft smile "You have my unconditional trust. The position we're in changes nothing, ya womanizer." The source material never went into detail about Dazai’s past relationships. Only that he’s made women cry and that Chuuya knew of every single last one of them but he’s done his fair share of over the top flirting throughout the series. You just had to steel your nerves and out bluff the conman.
"Does it now?" He hummed giving you a mischievous grin as his hand delicately released its grip on yours sliding down to your wrist. His fingers pressing into your skin trying to find your pulse. Your eyes widened as you realized what he was doing. Your demeanor broke as you squirm underneath him. It was too late, you could see the pleased expression grace his features "Someone should be a little more honest with themselves." He leaned in making your noses touch. You could feel his hot breath on your lips before he pulled away. "Buuuuut you're right, I won't." He abruptly broke the trance you were in sitting up releasing his hold on you making you feel breathless. Your heart was still racing. Curse this attractive waste of bandages.
"You can take the room! I'll be off to-" He started off cheerily but you reached out to grab his arm. "Nope. As gentlemanly as you are, you can't fool me. Don't flatter yourself. Yes, I find you attractive but I'm not that desperate. Just stay, we’re both adults." You pretended to gasp covering your mouth "Or are you running away because you're all hot and bothered?" You gave him a smirk waiting to see how he’d react. Two could play at this game. He frowned slightly at your challenge. You knew his signature move was running away from every uncomfortable moment he’s caused but if he backed down from your challenge now you'd win and Dazai doesn’t like to lose. So you shared the futon and you slept with Osamu Dazai.

Bestie I love your new blog theme 💜
Aaawww thank you 😭😭😭 I'm very happy with how it turned out so I'm glad you like it too!!! 💕
The full cleaned 55 Minutes sskk illustration (I queued it too, but showing it here so you don't have to wait three months to see it pffftt)
Tumblr media
But listen listen Violet I NEED you to know about the context of this illustration it's absolutely priceless. I initially wrote it in the tags but it predictability got too long so sit down while I offer you (and any passerby) tea and biscuits and talk about sskk while laughing my head off because I just love them so much and they're ridiculous
So Atsushi was after this object, this destructive weapon that in a matter of minutes would have swiped the whole Yokohama away. You have to understand 55 Minutes is set on a ship‚ or a floating town; Atsushi was currently on one of the bottom floors underground of it, several meters underwater‚ looking for the weapon in a computer room with big aquarium-like windows that looked directly to the depths of the ocean. AND. AND OF COURSE. AND OF COURSE AKUTAGAWA HAD TO DROP HIMSELF TO THE BOTTOM OF THE OCEAN. LIKE IT'S JUST SO ABSURD HE DID THAT HE 1) definitely isn't physically strong enough to swim that deep 2) is canonly thin and underweight which would make sinking even harder?? 3) dude has a literal lungs disease there's no way he could hold his breath that long. Yet he just DROPPED himself to the bottom of the ocean (for Atsushi... ) and BROKE THROUGH what must have been some of the thickest glass on earth, just to go after Atsushi. Which. If you ask me. Is something. And I didn't even mention the part where he was still falling down‚ locked eyes with Atsushi still inside and mouthed the words “I found you”. So Akutagawa basically had this entire ship-island almost sink just because he had to run after Atsushi and he was extra?? And because in that moment he believed Atsushi was a terrorist that had to be stopped because Akutagawa has two brain cells. But seriously just. The image of Akutagawa going after Atsushi and talking and talking and talking and smiling and talking, while Atsushi is just trying to run away from him struggling to make his way through running water and thinking “WHAT THE FUCK IS WRONG WITH THIS DUDE” is just priceless. And WHEN ATSUSHI SAID “DO YOU HATE ME THAT MUCH” AND AKUTAGAWA REPLIED “IT'S NOT HATE” HELLO???????????? And when Atsushi tried to pull the “Dazai is here too” card and Akutagawa replied “Cool then I'll kill you for him too” alsbdksjdjlsbdksbsk. Anyways sskk is seriously the only 55 Minutes redeeming quality. Further on there's even a scene where Akutagawa was in a position to kill Atsushi‚ didn't do so‚ looked at him with sorrow in his eyes (???)‚ freed him from the restrained condition the enemy had put him in and told him “Good. Now hurry. Do not waste my time‚ Jinko.” freeing Atsushi while HE HIMSELF was still at the enemy's mercy????????? Okay I'm perfectly normal about this

Hey, just here to talk about my new favorite trio (though one of them is dead). Dazai, Odasaku, and Ango.
So, just wanted to put my 2-cents into this, but even though Dazai was supposed to be this extremely sadistic, dark, and brutal mafioso during the Dark Era, I can't help but think that that's where we have seen him care the most about actual people–just because they were people he cared for. Not because they had a part in a greater plan of his or he just found them interesting or because he had a creed (one borrowed for Odasaku). He just simply cared about them and their wellbeing.
First of all, Odasaku, since he's the most obvious.
:keepreading:
All throughout the story, Dazai has never been particularly close to any of the other characters. They never know his true motivations, I don't think any of them (except maybe Akiko, the Pres, and (of course) Ranpo) knew about him being an ex-Mafia member, nobody ever tries to ask about his past, in the Dead Apple movie (is that canon? It feels more canonical than any other anime movie I've ever seen) Atsushi happens upon Dazai at Odasaku's grave and I have the feeling that might be the first time anyone has asked Dazai about Odasaku.
Also, for all of Dazai's suicide attempts, the others have treated them as annoyances, the story (for the most part) used them as comedic relief. The only person to treat them seriously was Odasaku. That moment where Odasaku takes the case with the gun from Ango's room and runs into Mimic and Dazai comes to help him, Dazai has another suicidal moment. But this one is anything but comedic. It's raw and dark. You can practically feel just how little Dazai truly values his own life. Again, this is not a comedic moment. During this moment in the light novel, Odasaku narrates:
" “Dazai, don’t move. I’ll think of something.” My fingers slowly reach for my gun. The gunman in grey could kill Dazai at any moment. Since the muzzle is already aimed at Dazai, even if I shoot the attacker’s heart in one shot, the attack may release the old pistol’s trigger. Timing is important. Although I don’t want to stake everything I have on this, but I don’t have any other options....“Dazai!” I shout. It feels like there’s tens of thousands of kilometres between me and Dazai....If the circumstances were different, if I had a different relationship with Dazai, it would not be surprising if I’d punched Dazai right there and then in such a situation. But me being me, I cannot do anything as such to Dazai. I put my gun back in my holster, walking away with my back turned to Dazai. With every step I take, I feel as though the earth has opened up into a bottomless pit as I fall endlessly. As Dazai pointed to his forehead and approached the muzzle, the look on his face – like that of a child about to burst into tears – had already been branded upon my eyes. "
That was no cheery suicide. Dazai was almost begging to be shot in front of one of his closest friends. That would’ve inconvenienced him, because if he had been killed, Odasaku would always have wondered if there’d been anything he could’ve done to have stopped Dazai.
When Odasaku is running from the sniper and calls Dazai for help, he says that if Dazai needs him to show him the Silver Oracle given to him by Mori, he could do that. (The Silver Oracle allows Oda to give orders even to executives like Dazai.) But Dazai cuts him off. This man, who wouldn’t go help Akutagawa against the Mimic soldiers (not that he really needed help until Gide got there), says that it’s not necessary. Dazai helped Odasaku because he wanted to, not because he was ordered to.
The part where Dazai is trying to convince Odasaku to stay after the orphans are killed might be the most heart wrenching scene of this arc. For all of this boy’s genius intellect and silver tongue, he can’t say what is needed. And perhaps nothing could’ve been said at that point to stop Odasaku.
When asked by Mori why he was going, despite not having a logical reason, Dazai simply replies with “because he’s my friend”. Have we ever heard that from Dazai again after that, towards anyone? I can’t remember a single instance of him calling any of the ADA members his friends. Just Odasaku.
The very fact that Dazai LISTENS to Odasaku and leaves the Port Mafia, the place where he’d spent most of his teenage years, where he’d made (a few) connections, where he bled, speaks to how much Dazai cared for him. While I’m not a Odazai shipper, I am comfortable saying that Dazai did love Odasaku, though most likely platonically. Dazai spends 2 years in hiding, probably being frequently moved from safe house to safe house, with no connections and left only with his memories of what was. To obey Odasaku’s last words to him, to become a better man.
As for Ango, there’s two main scenes I want to focus on.
First, after Dazai saves Odasaku from the Mimic sniper and opens the briefcase. Dazai explains to Odasaku why he thinks Ango was lying to them about the deal. Even after laying out his logic, he still asks Odasaku to bring Ango back. And he doesn’t say it like “bring him back so he can be punished”. He’s saying it like someone who is concerned about Ango’s wellbeing. This was his expression:
Tumblr media
He doesn’t look angry or tense. That is concern. At this point, I think he knows that Ango is lost to him. Whether through him dying or him being a traitor. Still, he wants to know he’s going to be okay.
Second, is the moment in the bar, the last time the Buraiha meet. Ango mentions going underground for awhile after this and Dazai asks if he honestly thinks he’ll walk out of here alive. Despite this threat, this is Dazai’s ultimate decision (and probably one of the saddest quotes from Dazai):
“Ango. Go before I change my mind.
I'm not sad. I knew this from the beginning. Whether you were from the gifted special operations division or not, anything I'd never want to lose is always lost. It is a given that everything that is worth wanting will be lost the moment I obtain it. There is nothing worth pursuing at the cost of prolonging a life of suffering."
If Dazai was truly as angry about Ango being a spy as he acted when they met back up in season 2, he wouldn't have ever let him walk out of that bar alive. This is Mafia Dazai we're talking about. A guy so freaking scary, the rest of the Mafia literally had a saying "the biggest misfortune for Dazai's enemies, is that they were Dazai's enemies" when he was 18. Mori was certain that Dazai would kill him and take his spot as the Boss of the Mafia in a few years. That's the Dazai we're talking about.
But, as I was saying, Dazai let Ango walk out of that bar alive. And his words to him at the time "Whether you were from the gifted special operations division or not, anything I'd never want to lose is always lost." Hinting that Ango was something he'd never want to lose–more to the point, he didn't want to lose the friendship they shared. To me, Dazai didn't seem angry. He was also, by his own admission (though Dazai is a lying liar who lies, but I don’t think he’s lying here), isn’t sad. Instead, he comes off as more resigned. He said he knew this from the beginning, when he first met Ango. In Dazai’s experience, he always loses that which he never wants to lose. So, from the moment he met Ango, he knew he’d lose him. He’d spent their entire friendship, preparing himself for this eventuality. He may not have foreseen the means, but he saw the ending.
The next time Dazai sees Ango (that we are privy to), Dazai is P I S S E D. He (I think) organizes a car crash so Ango will do what he wants. Again, Dazai was not angry at Ango for betraying the Mafia. (In my opinion, Dazai wasn’t loyal to Mafia anyway. He had his reasons for being there, but those reasons were solely for his own gain, not for any attachment to the Mafia. He cared about some of the people there, Odasaku and Ango (obviously), but also arguably Chuuya and Hirotsu.) Dazai is angry because of Ango’s involvement in Odasaku’s death and (possibly, from the 55 Minutes light novel) the cover-up of how Odasaku died against Mimic.
Ango (this poor, overworked boy) almost seems to expect this. He’s certainly not surprised. When Dazai points a gun at his head, Ango is expressionless. When he asks Dazai about the car crash and his airbag not deploying, he already knows he’s right, he’s just getting confirmation.
Dazai (platonically) loved Odasaku and looked up to him, still looks up to him. But I don’t agree with the idea that Dazai didn’t care about Ango. Did he love him like Odasaku? Probably not. But he did care. Just like Ango cares.
Which is why I’m interested in how Ango’s involvement with the current manga arc ends. Will he die–maybe sacrificing himself to save the ADA members that Dazai cares for? Will he survive? If he does live, what’s going to happen? Will he still have a job with the division? Maybe (though I doubt it) he’ll join the ADA. Mostly, what I’m curious of is whether or not Ango and Dazai’s relationship can be repaired. Dazai does not seem like a forgiving person. But perhaps I’m wrong. Maybe this is what is needed for them to start repairing their relationship.
(Please stay tuned to get my analysis on Dazai’s relationships with Atsushi and Akutagawa and my thoughts on whether or not they might give clues as to Dazai’s backstory.)

➡️Draken | Ken Ryuuguuji
The sun filtered through the window with lilac curtains giving the room a slight glow illuminating the scene within it; a tall young man with blond hair sat on the floor on the black carpet with a noticeably smaller girl behind him.
There was no one else with whom he could let his guard down like this.
Draken despite the cold shower, knowing that he has rested well and that he should not be sleepy, your soft hands combing him make him drowsy, lethargic and with heavy eyelids, he could hardly see your reflection in the mirror in front of him. He, concentrated on his braid and there was nothing better in the world than you being so close that he could feel your warmth, your soft caresses.
With care and gentleness you manage each blonde strand between your fingers, intertwining little by little. You did not see the mirror, they only saw blonde locks that slipped between your fingers, he had beautiful and well-groomed hair. Almost finalizing the braid was when you directed your gaze towards the mirror in front of you; Draken seemed to be nowhere near falling asleep again from the way he nodded slightly.
"Are you sleepy Ryu?"
A denial was the answer clearly but you only laughed at the obviousness of his lie, he was so cute when he was so helpless and vulnerable with you. They were unique moments and by how he snuggled between your legs he said that he only wanted to spend a few more minutes like that, together.
In the morning when even their paths did not separate, Ken Ryuuguuji could allow himself moments of vulnerability where you would cradle him carefully, smiling at all times and he did not need to have his eyes open to know that your face only showed love, he had already gone through a long stage of doubts, denial and self-inflicted pain that knowing who you are, his partner, that you are by his side and that you do not have any doubt in loving him as he is, with everything included only makes him feel more secure. Draken didn't doubt his love for you, he never could.
"I just want to stay like this for a few minutes"
"All you wish Ryuu"
The "I love you" were in the air and were received by both, they knew that love was mutual ...

➡️Mikey | Sano Manjiro.
The days you left school were naturally late thanks to the extra classes, the club, and other activities. It was normal to walk through the hallways of the school meeting only a few students from grades above who gave tired greetings, it must be difficult to be anywhere from leaving you assumed.
The silence was comforting as something cold.
Once with your outdoor shoes on, you left school seeing how your boyfriend was on his motorcycle with his cell phone in hand distracted, a clumsy idea emerged from the depths of your head and you executed it without thinking twice; you covered his eyes with your hands feeling the seconds how his hands touched yours, it was difficult to hold the laughter.
Mikey only limited himself to smiling without you seeing him, from the moment he felt your warm presence he knew it was you and only as confirmation the sweet aroma of your perfume invaded the air making it comforting, you were warmth, affection and home. You were so smiling, sweet, attentive and funny that sometimes he thought how you had noticed him.
As if you had a detector for his pessimism, you kissed your boyfriend on the cheek when you discovered his eyes showing your remarkable pout openly.
"You are bad guessing love" you accused fun catching your partner's face in your hands, you held between your little hands a mysterious, beautiful and so enigmatic world called Sano Manjiro "It will be that I am very good and I take you by surprise. What if? "
Mikey could only smile and let himself be carried away by your beautiful voice, you seemed to have a sixth sense for when he was just getting into negative thoughts about his relationship and he felt grateful for it, you were so special and irreplaceable.
"Aha, of course" accepted the blond amused, receiving another kiss with pleasure but this time on the lips. Mikey loved the feel of your smooth lips against his own, he could taste the taste of your gloss directly from your lips and it was the best feeling in the universe. "Come on I'll take you home."
The words died from the moment you got on the motorcycle behind your boyfriend, clinging with both arms to his waist and hiding your face from the wind that you knew would impact on your face that you still did not get used to. The soft roar of the motorcycle lulled you, the aroma of fabric softener, sun and sweets coming from your boyfriend only made you feel even more comfortable that it was inevitable not to rub your cheeks against his back, love overflowed from your heart .
"I love you Manji" you whispered softly, without the intention of making you listen but because of a red light one of Mikey's hands was caressing yours, you knew that he had heard you.
"I love you even more S / o-chan"
The green light on the traffic light sealed the rest of the trip in a pleasant and sweet silence, where they knew they were safe.

➡️Hanagaki Takemichi
It was late when they finally managed to get out of the game room, both laughing at monumental losses in silly games but with a more than happy smile on their lips. Takemichi couldn't help but smile and feel the constant pounding on his chest as your fingers were intertwined with his own, it felt good.
"I had a lot of fun today Michi" you said once you were both waiting for the train at the station, your gaze fixed to the front and then looking at your side hoping to find him looking elsewhere but you met his unmistakable bright eyes that made you blush "We should go out like this more often, I say if you don't have more meetings with Touman "
"I think the same! We won't have any meetings at the moment so you will put up with me longer, ”Takemichi joked laughing.
"I like spending time with Takemichi-kun so it wouldn't be to put up with it, it would be spending quality time with my boyfriend"
You refuted by giggling when you heard that he was choking on his own saliva, so you let go of his hand to gently hit his back helping him out of his stupor. Takemichi could only try to stop coughing and when he did he felt you closer, one of your arms behind his back surrounding him and how you leaned against his. It was instinct and perhaps the feelings of him speaking for him since he left a kiss on your head, he could smell the fruity aroma of your shampoo and the unmistakable essence of your perfume.
Little did you know that your Takemichi could only think of a way to save you, never to lose your smile and treasure each new memory.
You were his first and only love ...

➡️Atsushi Sendo | Akkun
The journey from his school to your school was about half an hour, but it was worth every tiny second for Atsushi who, like every Friday, had separated from his other friends to pass by you. Even though they had been going out as boyfriends for more than two and a half years, he still felt the nerves all over his body and the butterflies flying in his stomach that multiplied when he saw him leave the main doors laughing at something that your friends said, you looked beautiful with the glow of the sunset making you the center of their world. It was ridiculous how just by seeing you could make him fall in love more. Trying to regulate his nerves I wait for you when he saw you say goodbye to your friends and jog the rest of the way towards him. Was it even allowed to look this good and attractive in a school uniform? He did not know.
"Did you take too long Atsu?" you questioned your boyfriend smiling.
The other people ceased to exist the moment you approached him, the moment he could see your bright eyes and catch the sweet aroma of your perfume in the air.
"Not at all I just arrived a few minutes ago, how was school?"
With a remarkable pout you started with your remarkable anecdote of this day without even knowing that Atsushi was looking at you as if you were hanging the sun, the moon and the stars in the sky. Akkun only listened and commented from time to time, until it was his turn to tell about his day at school. Neither of them noticed when their hands clasped, it was natural.
━━━━
Tumblr media
➡️Tachibana Hinata
The dark sky above their heads only gave more seriousness and intimacy at the moment, with her nerves on the surface Hinata could only see how the wind moved your hair and carried in it, the scent of your shampoo or perhaps your perfume. perfume that I gave you on your birthday a year ago?
"The moon is beautiful tonight" you said to the air.
Hinata did not take long to detect the message behind your prayer, endless nights watching k-dramas, anime and watching movies xianxia by your side made her understand the references, she loved how you expressed yourself so casually by dropping messages of your unconditional love.
"If the moon is beautiful S / o"
When Hinata thought that silence would fill the air, your voice was heard again but this time in front of her. Hinata could only swallow hard to see you standing in front of her, so she could see the difference in heights between the two and how the elegant beauty accentuated your being, you were so pretty and attractive that it could not cross her mind that you corresponded her feelings but there they were; in the park late at night on a romantic getaway that consisted of a motorcycle ride and talking in a park where they had confessed.
"But I can't help but think that I'm lucky to be able to call you my girlfriend Nat."
"It is not worth it! You always know what to say and you leave me like a fool in love looking at you. You're unfair S / o-chan! "
Before her words continued Hinata felt your lips brush against hers, your kisses were so soft and gentle that she felt so fragile in your arms, so loved and desired.
"I love you so much Nat"
The kisses continued gentle, soft and in order to communicate love, one more memory that the couple would engrave in her memory.

So my dear friend @kittytudor and I were discussing some takes the fandom has on Dazai and especially his interactions with Mori and I thought I’d share
Tumblr media
I really hate the train of thought that goes like “they’re super smart so they know life has no meaning and nothing matters” like that’s cynical for no reason whatsoever and just nihilistic
Yea when you are intelligent you see all the bad in the world and feel like you’re powerless to stop it a lot of times but the things is
You know scientists see beauty in everything geologist will get excited about literal dirt a marine biologist about a gold fish. When you’re intelligent you see all the bad but also all the good
However it’s easier to see the bad and often times it clouds your view but part of the healing process is starting to see beauty and happiness in the smallest things and I think that’s a journey Dazai is slowly going on.
So I really don’t think intelligence is the issue here and I’m gonna assume you’re an edgy bastard if you say so
I feel like Dazai’s issue is more the environment than anything and the lack of meaningful relationships. I know we clown the scene where he says actually living is okay now 1 day after meeting Chuuya but here is the thing. This might have been the first time he had someone his age who wanted to hang out with him or even less just someone his age who tolerated him. I personally know nothing about his life pre mafia but you can assume it wasn’t a good life if at age 14 you decide the bloody mafia is preferable to wherever you’re at at the moment
In my opinion Mori didn’t encourage it per se but he didn’t try to stop it either I really think that for him he did not expect Dazai would go through with it (again) and /or as cruel as it sounds if he actually did it which Mori didn’t think was likely he had one less rival to worry about but I really think that’s Mori’s reasoning for staying “neutral” for lack of a better word on this issue
That being said I’m sure being surrounded by death and suffering did not do any good for an already depressed 14/15yo
Tumblr media
Which leads me to the second point. I really don’t think Mori expected Dazai to leave or tried to make him leave. For Mori Dazai was a powerful asset because of his ability and because of his intelligence that y’all are obsessed with. So why would you want to push that person away and it’s not like he was encouraging him to suicide here which would make much more sense than wanting him to leave.
And I have evidence
I’m gonna start it with: Oda did not die to set an example I don’t think so no. In his conversation with Chuuya he said something like “being a leader means making sacrifices for the well being of the group” or something like that and that’s what he did here.
He sacrifices Oda to get the permit.
The strange thing is I do think Mori meant what he said to Chuuya that he is a leader but also a servant to the mafia he wants the mafia to gain more power and that’s why he did what he did to get the permit.
I do think it could be a lesson to Dazai but not in the “if you cross me this is gonna happen to you” because Oda didn’t cross him Oda didn’t want power he is the last person who was interested in that. I think if anything it was more a lesson as in “when you take over this is something you’ll have to do and I’m showing you how it’s done”
Evidence for that is he was chuckling when he mentioned that possibility that Dazai would kill him and take one someday. And I agree that Mori
Wouldn’t mind if that was better for the Mafia. Like he wouldn’t make it easy for him and he wouldn’t give up but if he is defeated he wouldn’t be angry or annoyed because like I mentioned above I do think he was genuine when he said he is also a servant to the Mafia
My other piece of evidence is that when he showed Dazai the permit he seemed proud of what he’s done. The way he presented it and the entire scenario he seemed proud more than smug. If he really wanted Dazai out I feel like he would’ve been more smug about the whole thing and we know he can do that well.
And obviously there is also the fact he offered him not once but twice to come back. And what’s interesting is that the first time the offer was secret like he sent Gin and Higuchi and it was in a shady ass tunnel
Now the other time is where it gets interesting because it was very public in front of Dazai’s colleagues the black lizard and Fukuzawa.
Tumblr media
Now Mori is a smart guy but also he has a sense of pride as we learned so I really don’t think he would risk being humiliated in front of Fukuzawa of all people just to mess with Dazai and he seemed genuinely surprised when Dazai said “you kicked me” and he didn’t offer him to just come back no he offered to be back as an executive and having Dazai decline and clown him in front of Fukuzawa like that I don’t think he would risk that if he was just playing
The thing is Mori is smart but he has tunnel vision in my opinion. He was so focused on getting the permit he forgot that this plan has consequences that aren’t just “we get the permit”
And also one of Mori’s issues is that he never takes into consideration people’s emotions. You can predict human Behavior to a certain degree a lot of times you can know what to
Say or what to do to get a certain result but the thing is humans aren’t algorithms they don’t always operate on logic they have emotions. And these emotions can be so strong that they override any crumb of logic left which is something I think Mori fails to understand. That’s why he didn’t expect Dazai to leave he forgot about the emotional factor.
That’s what Mori lacks but Dazai has and my evidence for this is a scenario we laughed at because it was presented in a funny way but I think that’s something that shows that Dazai is better at this 4D chess game than Mori.
On the Moby Dick he knew that Akutagawa would abandon everything to talk to him. If Dazai only operates by thinking about logical Behavior he wouldn’t have told Atsushi to do this but he realises that the emotional factor is one of the strongest drives humans have.
Tumblr media
And you know I think Mori knows that when it comes to 4D chess Dazai would defeat him but he doesn’t mind that he isn’t scared of that. In dead Apple he couldn’t have possibly known the whole business with the pill but he told Chuuya to interfere. Mori has a strange sense of trust towards Dazai even now that they’re part of different sides.
I think Mori is has always been aware that although he says he does Dazai doesn’t actually want to die and I think the scene with the hyper and hypo tension medication in 15 shows this. If you actually want to die why would you Mix medicine with effects that cancel out each other and Mori is a doctor he knows this. That’s why I think he didn’t expect Dazai to commit and that he believes Dazai actually wants to live and because of that he will try and preserve himself and by extension Yokohama which is why he told Chuuya to go in dead apple, which is why he let Akutagawa go on the Moby Dick in season 2 because he realized Dazai wanted him to go there and he trusts Dazai to a certain degree .
I really feel like his underestimated the emotional factor and this will ultimately lead to his downfall. Like he didn’t expect Dazai to leave he wouldn’t expect anyone to react super emotional to god knows what he’ll do and thereby underestimate their response to that which will make him meet his end.
I don’t think the “you kicked me” is Dazai in denial he acted ok emotions or at least that’s not the whole thing. I think that Dazai’s reasoning for saying that is this:
Oda died so Mori can get more power which was part of Mori’s plan all along so looking at the bigger picture it was Mori’s plan and actions who drove me out of the Mafia so he basically “kicked me out”
Also I wanna add that I feel like Mori because he underestimates the emotional factor he doesn’t understand to this day why Dazai left like he knows it’s related to oda he can follow that train of events but in his mind it doesn’t make logical sense why Dazai would do that which is why he didn’t manage to win Dazai over back to The Mafia because in his mind be doesn’t know the logical reason why Dazai left which is also another reason why he was so surprised when Dazai said he kicked him
Also I’d like to add that I really don’t think he felt threatened or wanted to just get rid of him
Dazai was already suicidal so if it would very easy to make it look like that. And like I mentioned before if it was the best choice for the Mafia I really don’t think Mori would be that bothered about being replaced by Dazai.
I also don’t think he thought Dazai would be more useful on the outside because once again why lose a valuable addition like that
And it’s not like
He wanted to use him
As a spy or anything we know that would’ve been arranged differently see Ango
So Mori the logical guy he is wouldn’t want his enemies to have someone with Dazai’s ability because that’s a pain in the ass and also
He wouldn’t want an insider like Dazai to join his enemies and spill all his secrets. Dazai had a very high rank and like I said I don’t think Mori expected him to leave so he had no reason to hide things from
him so even without his ability he would be a very strong asset to the Mafias enemies so there is no way Mori would think he is more useful on the outside since
1. we already said mori has tunnel vision he couldn’t possibly predict that much that he thinks Dazai is better out
2. We established that he isn’t afraid of him
3. He wouldn’t want the ability and the information to fall into his enemies’ hands
4. If he was actually scared and wanted to get rid of him making it seem like suicide or actually driving him to suicide would be much easier especially since mori is a doctor

I’ve just read the head cannons of Chuuya and Dazai’s bebes and I love it 🥰 can you write how they’ll react when someone kidnapped their babies and how they would get them back? QwQ
A/N : I've been gone for so long and I'm so sorry. This request and many others have laid dormant in my ask box for many many months and I'm so sorry. I went through big depression kick, and I didn't write for a while. I ended up getting laid off from my job because of the rona, and everything just felt uncertain for a while and I honestly didn't really know what to do. I slowly got back into writing, starting off with my fanfiction just to get back into the swing of it, and now I'm ready to make y'all proud and finish all the requests! I'm sorry for making you all wait so long, and I want this request and all other requests that I answer to be amazing for all of you. So, here we go! -Hopefully (still) Your Favorite Dingus
T/W : angst; kidnapping; slight mention of blood;
Osamu Dazai
Tumblr media
Kazue was the literal light of his life, aside from you... obviously. You and his son were the center of his entire universe, he would do anything for you and his son. He made that quite known, considering how spoiled your son was already. At three years old, Dazai had already managed to buy your son everything he did, and sometimes didn't need.
Your son was a lot like his dad in the way that he liked to run off often, having you worried sick in the middle of the grocery store of mall. Dazai would often find him at the gumball machines or the tiny change eating rides in the middle of the mall. Your son hated to be confined in his stroller, and Dazai agreed that strollers were awful contraptions and that your son should be allowed to walk around.
His views quickly changed when you were out shopping for groceries one afternoon. Dazai was at work, and trying to keep your son in the shopping cart proved to be impossible, so you had agreed to let him out of the cart as long as he stayed close to you and hold your hand. You promised to get him candy if he followed those two simple rules, but thanks to Dazais relaxed parenting, your son just assumed he'd get candy no matter what. (Thanks Dazai)
You had only let go of his hand for a second, kneeling down to grab something from the bottom shelf. The last thing you heard was the small cry of "Momma!" and when you shot up and turned around he was gone. Your heart sank as you dropped the item in your hand and ran to the front of the store, asking the employees if they had seen your son, showing them the pictures in your wallet, and all of them shook their head, only able to offer their sympathies to you.
Calling your husband was the hardest part, trying to keep your voice and your hands steady as you held your phone up to your ear. The employees had already called the police for you, and they were scouring the entire store trying to look for any clue as to where your son could be.
When you had managed to tell Dazai what happened, he was on his way to the store, he didn't waste any time at all. He was furious, and at first he took his anger out on you. "I thought you were watching him!" "How could you let this happen?!" "Why would you let him go!?" He was angry and he wasn't thinking straight, but as soon as he saw how his words affected you, he quickly pulled you into a hug, peppering the top of your head with kisses. "I'm sorry... I'm so sorry, darling. It's not your fault."
An officer brought over Kazue's stuffed kitty cat which was a gift from Fukuzawa. He had gotten it on his first birthday and refused to part with it, he brought it with him everywhere. The sight of the kitty cat not being held by Kazue made you throw up immediately, your mind jumping to the worst possible scenario. You heard Dazai grit his teeth, his arm was wrapped around you tightly, and his grip on your shirt tightened.
The two of you race to the Agency, every other case that they had been working on is dropped instantly. Desks are cleared and pushed together to draw out a map of the entirety of Yokohama. You're sitting on one of the couches in the office, Kazue's kitten clutched against your chest, your tears soaking the top of the plushy. The light in Dazais eyes has disappeared completely, he's stern, on edge. His voice is hard but you can hear it break occasionally at the end of his sentences, especially when he says his sons name.
Ranpo and Atsushi are the main people Dazai communicates with, his voice is mixed with the constant slamming of his fists on the desk when his emotions take over completely. "Where the hell is my son!?" He shouts as he drops his head into his hands. That's the only time he'll cry, his body shaking violently. You walk over and wrap your arms around him from behind, your chin resting on his shoulder as you both sob.
Everyone had been sitting around the office quietly watching you and Dazai have your moment. They all felt hopeless, especially when Dazai had initially went to Ranpo and he didn't seem to have a clue as to where Kazue was or who had taken him. "Why... Why would anyone take him? What's the reason? I want to know a reason!" Dazai shouted, his fists once again coming down on the desk. You pulled away quickly, giving him his space to lash out. He threw everything off the desk, his head dropping into his arms that were folded against the desk and letting out a scream.
His strength was being tested, he was breaking. It killed you to see him like this, you knew that there was nothing you could do to calm him. There was nothing worse that could ever happen to him, his son was everything to him. Kazue was the reason he had stopped attempting suicide, Kazue gave him a reason to stay alive, Kazue was his life line. Dazai loved his son with every fiber of his being, and right now he not only lost his son, he lost his reason for living. If anything were to happen to your son, if the worst case scenario was the actual case, you were sure that you would lose your husband as well.
All hope had seemed lost, the sun was quickly setting over the city. Everyone was emotionally exhausted. You were curled up on the couch, your head resting on Dazai's lap, his fingers massaging your scalp. "Please, get some rest darling. You need it." He whispered to you when he saw you slowly drift to sleep only to have your eyes open quickly. You felt bad for falling asleep, knowing that your son was out there somewhere without you or his father.
You handed Dazai the stuffed kitten before rolling over and trying to get comfortable. "Here, if anything comes up.. he's gonna need his Fuwa." You said sleepily, and you heard Dazai's chuckle, it sounded like he was being choked. He sniffled as he grabbed the kitten and brought it up to his face, silently crying into it.
Ranpo stood up from his chair and made his way over to the desk, pulling the map up off the floor and laying it flat on the desk. His eyes were wide open, the soft emerald green had long since turned as hard as the gem itself. Dazai shifted you off his lap and made his way over to Ranpo, stuffing Fuwa into his coat pocket. Atsushi followed him over and they both peered over Ranpo's shoulder, looking down at the map, following where Ranpo pointed with his fingers.
"The warehouse... next to the Port. Whoever it was quick enough to be gone before Y/N could notice, but he was still able to drop his cat. That means the person was on foot, so this person would have to be somewhere close to the store so a scene wouldn't be made, but somewhere they could hide him. They're most likely expecting us to show up, they want something in return, this is a ransom kidnapping." Ranpo said and Dazai nodded, trusting him with 100% of his being. He had to be right, but Dazai also knew how some ransom situations worked out. If it took too long...
"We have to go now." Dazai growled, and Ranpo nodded, Atsushi "hmph"ing in agreement. Kunikida stood up from his chair, joining the three of them by the door.
"None of you know how to drive. Let's go." Kunikida had a soft spot for Kazue, he wanted your son home safe as much as everyone else. (Even if he thought his father was a complete dunce.)
Everyone in the office agreed to stay with you just in case you woke up before the four of them got back, and with that they all ran out the door, hopping into Kunikida's car and speeding off towards the warehouse.
When they got there, they snuck up to the doors of the warehouse. Dazai leaned his head against the door, hoping to hear something, anything that would indicate that his son was in there. His heart was beating fast, and as much as he wanted to murder someone for stealing his son in the first place, he wanted to bring Kazue home with him, bring him back to you safe and sound more than anything else.
"Momma... Daddy..." He heard the soft whimpers of his son coming from the inside of the warehouse. It sounded like he was crying and Dazai to control his urge to kick down the door right then and there. He needed to be careful so that no harm would come to his son, but the sounds of his son softly crying had him seeing red. "Pwease..." He heard his son again and his heart shattered, the sound of his son pleading with his captor had him on the verge of an anger induced emotional breakdown.
Kunikida pulled the gun from the back of his pants and silently counted down from three before they pulled the door open. All four of them had guns, refusing to let Atsushi use his ability out of fear of hurting Kazue. There was one man in the corner of the room, a gun pointed at the head of your son as he smirked up at the four men. They all stopped dead in their tracks, dropping their guns to the ground and holding their hands up in the air. "Please, don't hurt him..." Dazai choked out, his eyes locking with his son in the corner.
"Took you all long enough to show up, thought you guys were detectives. He was becoming a pain in my ass, constantly crying, asking for his mommy and daddy and his Fuwa." The man chuckled as he cocked the gun back and pointed it back at your son. "Do you know why I'm doing this? Do you know?!" The guy shouted and Kazue cried out, his arms outstretched for Dazai.
He felt like he was going to collapse, the room was spinning, he had to compose himself though, he had to stay focused. He looked to Kunikida and Atsushi, hoping the plan would work out how they had said.
Kunikida quickly bent down and grabbed his gun off the floor, firing one shot at the arm of the man, making him drop the gun. Kazue let out a shrill scream and Dazai took this moment to run over and scoop him up off the floor, holding him close against his chest. The other three ran over to the man, Atsushi and Kunikida pinned him down on the ground as Ranpo cuffed his arms behind his back.
After the police took the man away they all made their way back to the Agency building, Dazai was in the back of the car holding Kazue on his lap, rocking him back and forth as his son fell asleep in his arms. The man had been one of the criminals they had captured before Kazue was even born. He had held an entire bank and its customers hostage, but had never actually killed someone, so he was let out on good behavior recently. He had been stalking Dazai, and he found out about you and Kazue and decided that he would have his revenge for the Agency ruining his life. None of them ever found out if the man would have actually hurt Kazue, and honestly, they didn't want to know, they were all just happy that he was unharmed.
When they walked through the door and you saw Kazue being cradled in Dazais arms you fell to your knees and cried. Tanizaki and Yosano had to help you stand up, and as soon as you found your footing you ran over to Dazai. "Hi Momma!"
Dazai now sternly enforced the stroller rule, he didn't want to go through anything like that ever again.
Chuuya Nakahara
Tumblr media
Asa was his princess and you were his queen. But his daughter, oof, if anyone even looked at his daughter wrong for crying he would kill someone. Do not test Chuuya when it comes to his child. He would kiss the ground that she crawls on, he loves her so much.
If you didn't know any better, you'd think his office was a shrine dedicated to her and you. There were framed pictures of you and her, and sometimes the three of you hung on his wall, propped up on his desk and coffee table, pretty much any surface that could have pictures, they were covered.
She had just celebrated her first birthday, she was learning how to walk which Chuuya would not shut up about. If there was ever a moment to talk about his daughter he would. The Mafia members had all learned to just deal with it, knowing that if they looked agitated about the constant talk of his daughter they would either be demoted or have their asses kicked.
"Does she really have to start sleeping in her own room? She's got a crib in our room, I don't see the problem." Chuuya whispered to you from the couch as you made your way into the room opposite of yours and his. She had an entire nursery that was practically unused due to protective parenting. He really didn't see a reason in having her in a completely different room when it was so much easier to have her in yours and his room. If she woke up, he could get her immediately and get her back to sleep in the bed between the two of you.
When you came out of the bedroom you sat with him on the couch, his arm habitually wrapping around your shoulder and pulling you closer. He turned down the television so he could hear the monitor clearly. "If she gets too used to sleeping with us in our room, she'll never want to sleep in her own room. She's not that much further. You're spoiling her, honey." He groaned and you stifled your laughter, propping yourself up to press a quick peck to his cheek. "We should try to get some rest while she's sleeping. Come on."
The two of you laid in your bed, he held you close against his chest while you traced hearts against his bare chest with your finger. "I don't know why she has to sleep in her own room now though. She's only a year old. She's still my baby. I feel better having her close." He sighed, adjusting his free hand behind his head as he turned to look over at the video monitor, the corner of his lips twitching up slightly as he watched his daughter sleep peacefully in her crib.
"You're scared of her growing up. She's turned you into a big softy. You know, she's gonna keep growing."
"Don't say that. She's only one." He pulled his arm out from underneath you and ran his hands over his face. He hated thinking of her getting bigger, growing older. The thought of her not being the adorable, babbling baby that waddled over to the door whenever he walked in with open arms was enough to make him almost cry. ALMOST.
"You know... we can have more..." You said almost too seductively as you peppered kisses across his shoulders. It was supposed to be a joke, but he didn't take it as such. He wouldn't mind one or two more little princesses or princes teetering around the house.
The two of you thoroughly tired each other out, the night seemed to be going perfectly. Asa hadn't woken up yet, and this was the first time the two of you had been able to be intimate in that way since she had reached the eight month mark. You fully blamed Chuuya for that though, he had spoiled her so much, but he didn't seem to mind it at the time. Now he seemed to be convinced that having her in a separate room wasn't such a bad thing.
Everything was silent, the only sound was the crickets chirping outside and the occasional sound of a car passing by in the distance. That would shortly come to an end though, the sound of glass breaking and Asa's blood curdling scream coming from both the monitor and the room across the hall had jolted you and Chuuya from your peaceful slumber. You grabbed the monitor off the nightstand and Chuuya ordered you to stay in bed as he ran out of the room and into Asa's room. You knew though, it was too late as you saw the cloaked man who was holding your daughter jump out of the window just as the door flew open and Chuuya came into view on the screen.
"NO! Son of a BITCH!" His screeching voice was just as loud as your daughters cries had been and you dropped the monitor into your lap on the bed as the realization hit you. This wouldn't have happened if you had just listened to Chuuya, if you had let her sleep in your bedroom as she always had. He ran back into the room, flicking the lights on as he went over to the closet and quickly got dressed.
"This... this is my fault... if I would have listened..." You said, not able to face your him at all. He turned to face you, sighing as he tried to calm his nerves. He was already fully dressed, ready to hunt down and murder the asshole who had the nerve to take HIS daughter. He made his way around the bed to the side you were on, grabbing your face in his hands and kissing you softly.
"Don't you even dare blame yourself. I'm gonna get her back. I need you to stay here though, I can't have you getting hurt." You knew what he meant. The way that he felt right now, this would probably turn into an all out war, and if you were in the wrong place at the wrong time you could end up injured. You nodded slowly, kissing him one last time before he ran out of the room and out the front door.
He barely gave the car time to start up before slamming his foot down on the gas pedal, peeling out of the parking spot and speeding down the street. His vision was blurry as the tears started to stream out of his eyes, he was only able to keep his composure long enough to hopefully make you feel better. Now that he was alone he had hurdled the thin line between lashing out and having a complete mental and emotional breakdown.
The only thing keeping him from getting into a severe car accident was knowing that he had to stay alive to save Asa. Although he couldn't see where he was going through his clouded vision, he had dedicated the route to muscle memory, and he could luckily see faint streaks of red and green lights indicating braking cars and traffic lights.
When he got to the headquarters he got some questionable stares from the guards, it was three o'clock in the morning, considerably late, or maybe early, to be coming into work. When they attempted to speak to him he couldn't even mumble out a "fuck off" through his sobs. He raced up the stairs, not having the patience to deal with waiting for the elevator to get him up to the floor he needed to be on.
He stormed into Mori's office, and, not unlike his boss, he found him sitting at his desk, his hands folded under his chin as he stared down at the papers in front of him. "They said you'd be on your way up. What's wrong Chuuya?" Mori asked, motioning to the armchair in front of his desk. Chuuya didn't want to sit though, so he strode over to the desk, slamming the note that had been left in Asa's room down in front of Mori. "What is this?" Mori asked, grabbing the note between his gloved fingers and unfolding it.
"He got my Asa. I'm gonna fucking kill him!" Chuuya screamed, remembering the words that had been carefully scripted out on the thick note paper.
"For the beautiful woman who was murdered by one of your own. I shall avenge her. An eye for an eye. -H"
He knew exactly who "H" was, and he knew exactly who the beautiful woman was that he was speaking of. What he didn't understand was why he would target his family, his daughter to get back at the Mafia for what had happened. Chuuya hadn't even taken part in the situation that had sparked this outcome, so it made absolutely no sense to him.
"Chuuya, you need to stay calm. Asa is loved dearly by everyone here, I will get together everyone needed to find her." Chuuya found his bosses strange sense of composure to be infuriatingly irritating.
"How could I possibly stay calm!?" Chuuya shouted, he wanted to lash out, he wanted to go off on someone, anyone.
"I would feel the same way if it was my darling Elise who had been taken." Mori said, but that was a mistake. Chuuya sighed, exasperated. He was pacing the floor, but when Mori had the audacity to utter those words, he punched the wall that he was closest to, leaving a large hole.
"She's your god damn ability! You wouldn't understand half of what I was feeling because this is my actual fucking DAUGHTER! So don't tell me I need to stay calm!" Chuuya screamed, the tears seemed to flow endlessly, staining his cheeks as they ran down to his chin, hanging on for only a second before splashing down onto the hard wood floors. Mori didn't argue back, he knew that Chuuya was emotionally unstable right now, so he just nodded in agreement.
"So what is it that you need me to do?" He asked, the phone already in his hand as his fingers hovered over the dial.
"Get everyone here..." Chuuya muttered before finally crashing down in the armchair. His sobs had eventually become choked off, and he was left shaking in the chair, his arms wrapped tightly around his chest as he tried to hold himself together.
Everyone had filed into the office, some of them looked agitated, others looked tired and pissed off that they had been woken up, but when they saw Chuuya's current state they knew that something was wrong. His usual smug, cocky smirk seemed to have been erased, the only emotion that was left to be read on his face was pain.
Chuuya didn't need to say much, no one needed a thorough explanation to jump into action. Asa was the one beacon of light that graced the walls of the Mafia headquarters whenever Chuuya brought her in. She had even managed to make Akutagawa crack a small smile when she had burped in Chuuya's face and then spit up on his freshly laundered coat.
Around five o'clock in the morning he got a call from you. He answered it quickly, and it broke his heart to hear how distraught you were. "H-Hi honey... It's almost time for her bottle. She'll need to eat soon, and she'll need to be changed, and and and... god, please tell me you've found her..." You were a mess, and he could only imagine how much harder it was for you to be there in your home, surrounded by all of her things but not her.
"Not yet... but I swear, I'm gonna bring her home to you, okay? Trust me." He needed you to trust him, because right now all hope seemed lost. There was no possible leads as to where the jackass could be keeping her, nobody knew where to find the guy.
"It's... It's so quiet... please bring her home." You whispered out between broken sobs, he heard you try to swallow back the lump that had been building in your throat. He could only nod, giving you a small hum as an answer.
After you had hung up, whispering out a solemn "I love you." Before ending the call he was right back at it. He was dead set on catching this guy today. Not only had he stolen away his daughter, but he had destroyed his wife, his love... This man had crossed a line and he was going to pay for it.
"Oi, Chuuya. Look, at the bottom of the note." Tachihara said, he had the note close up to his face, his eyes squinting as he focused on the tiny scrawling at the bottom of the page. Chuuya ran over and snatched the paper out of his hands, walking over to the large window to try to shine some light onto the paper and see the writing clearer.
"For fucks sake, they're coordinates! They were here the entire time!" Chuuya was seething now, this must have been a sick game to that man. Chuuya grabbed his coat off the back of the chair and headed for the door, but he was stopped by Mori who placed a hand on his chest.
"This might be a trap, how do you know it's not?" Mori said and there was a soft murmur of agreement from the group of people that were standing around.
"Does it matter!? She could be there and that's all that matters!" Chuuya screamed, the tears that threatened to spill were stinging his eyes. The fact that they thought he cared about his own safety as this moment was almost laughable, he would have laughed if his throat didn't feel like it was closing in on itself. "If you're so fucking worried than I'll take Akutagawa..." This is all his fault anyway, isn't it? Akutagawa was the one who had murdered the woman who he was avenging, so he might as well come along.
Chuuya pulled the coordinates up on his phone and it pinpointed a building that seemed on the map to be rundown and abandoned. A princess like Asa didn't belong in a place like that, it made him sick to even imagine his beautiful, precious daughter in such a desolate area. He growled as the directions read that it would take an hour and a half, maybe two hours to get there.
He would make it in half the time though. He could give a shit less about traffic rules, and if the cops even dared to try to stop him on his mission, the wrath of Hell and Chuuya would be brought down upon them. He sped down the streets, winding through traffic like it was nothing. He didn't speak a word to Akutagawa, and Akutagawa knew not to talk to him right now either. Chuuyas mind was a frenzy, a whirlwind of emotions. A mixture of anger, depression, rage, and heartache, and all of those emotions were just simmering.
The devil himself wouldn't be able to stomach what Chuuya planned on doing to the man who took his daughter from him.
He made it there in record time, the drive only took fifty five minutes, an hour tops to get there. The entire drive, Chuuya's eyes would glance in the windshield mirror, looking back at the empty car seat, hoping that it would soon be filled with his perfect little bundle of joy to be brought home.
Chuuya kicked the door in and his eyes immediately zeroed in on the trail of blood droplets on the floor. His heart sank while his stomach rose, he tried to control his dry heaving as horrid images and scenes filled his mind. "Remember his ability, it uses blood." Akutagawa said sternly, trying to keep Chuuya from losing it completely already.
They followed the trail up a case of stairs that seemed like a safety hazard, and Chuuya hated to think that his daughter was in this place at all. It wasn't safe enough for her to be in, she could get hurt at any point. This place needed to be demolished as soon as he got her out of here. He would do it himself if the city didn't want to.
The blood stopped in front of a door, and as soon as Chuuya heard the soft whimpering of his daughter behind the door he kicked it in. She was sitting in a small dingy playpen in the corner of the room, and Akutagawa had to hold Chuuya back to keep him from running straight for her.
"WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING!? SHE'S RIGHT THERE!" Chuuya shouted, alerting his daughter to his presence. She pulled herself up on the rails of the playpen, stomping her feet to show him that she was becoming impatient.
"This might be the trap. We need to be careful." Akutagawa hissed, and Chuuya knew he was right. He sighed and peaked into the room, scanning it entirely to make sure it was empty before stepping in. Akutagawa followed close behind, Rashomon creating a shield around himself and Chuuya as they made their way over to Asa.
As soon as Chuuya got close enough he pulled her out of the playpen, holding her tight against his chest. He breathed her in, finding instant comfort in the smell of the all too familiar baby lotion and lavender shampoo that you used for her nightly baths. "I'm so sorry to have kept you waiting, princess. My beautiful baby girl, daddy loves you so much." He cooed to her, but just as things seemed to be going flawlessly, a loud scream escaped her tiny rose petal lips.
A hail of what seemed like bullets were fired across the room, and one of them managed to hit her leg. Chuuya held onto his composure long enough to check her leg, it had just skimmed by, but it was enough to make her bleed and to make her cry. He was trembling, all of his emotions had formed into one cluster fuck of pure, unfiltered rage. He passed Asa over to Akutagawa and ordered him to leave the room through his teeth. Akutagawa didn't bother to argue, instead wrapping Rashomon around himself and Asa completely and running out of the room and down the stairs.
Chuuyas teeth were barred as the man stepped out from the darkest shadow of the room. He didn't have time to speak before Chuuya charged at him, tackling him to the ground and pummeling him with his bare hands, the force of his ability behind each and every punch would leave the man unrecognizable. He was going to kill him, he wanted to kill him, but the vibration of his phone in his pocket made him stop. He pulled his phone out and when he saw it was you it brought him back to reality, the reality that his daughter was waiting for him, and you were still at home waiting for him to bring her home.
He answered it, holding his phone between his ear and shoulder as he wiped the blood of the man off his hands. "Did you find her? Tell me you found her!" Your voice was hoarse, he knew that you hadn't stopped crying. He couldn't keep you waiting any longer, you deserved to hold Asa in your arms as well.
"We'll be home in an hour or two." He said, and it felt like the weight of the world had been lifted off his shoulders when he heard your sigh of relief at his words.
Two Months Later
Chuuya was propped up on the floor, his head resting in his open palm as he bounced Asa's plush horse across the floor, making the horse noises as he did so. The sound of Asa's laughter was music to his ears, and her wide smile was just as beautiful as she flaunted her newly sprouted bottom two teeth. She crawled across the floor towards Chuuya who quickly lifted her up in the air. "Airplane Asa coming in for the landing!" He said playfully as he lowered her down to her his face and pressed a quick kiss to her nose.
His head shot up as he heard the bedroom door open. You had your hands behind your back, and the wide smile that spread across your face when you saw him made his heart flutter. He sat up, his back against the couch now, Asa on his lap attempting to imitate her fathers horse sounds as she bounced the plush horse across her lap. "What's up, baby?" Chuuya asked, wondering what could possibly be behind your back.
You moved your hands to the front, holding the white stick between two fingers and smiling down at him. "Congratulations, daddy."
a/n : I hope you enjoyed my first request after my ridiculously long hiatus. Again, I apologize for being gone so long, but I can't wait to start working on all the requests that are in my inbox. I love you all!

THANK YOU FOR SAYING THAT ABT THE BSD MANGA ILY THANK YOU I FEEL LIKE MY OPINION IS FINALLY VALIDATED WHICH IS: BSD has turned meh. I have become indifferent towards the plot due to the fact there are no real stakes - I feel like the OP characters like Dazai will always have a solution with a deus ex machina feel to it, making it impossible for me to care. With the recent chaos happening in the manga (I too gave up on the manga a year or so ago!), I was baffled to find out I could no longer enjoy it. My memory is poor, and I can't really pinpoint it at the moment, but BSD just... doesn't engage me as it used to. Keep in mind I was an obsessive fan of it and analyzed it to the tiniest details, but all of my great love for the series has long died, sadly. But! I am glad to hear you feel similarly about it because, yes, the potential was there, but it got terribly wasted.
Bruh don't I feel it, me and @autumn-foxfire have like monthly bitch sessions about the state of bsd at this point. I was also super invested in it in initial arcs (Up until the guild arc ended) and then slowly started petering off only to drop it the first time around the hunting dogs introduction. Then after some time i was like okay ill go give it a second shot, came to the vampire arc went 'wow this is really fuckin stupid' and dropped it again. Idk will I pick it up again, maybe I'll just stick to being an anime only, even tho I also have problems with some adaptation things but that's BESIDES THE POINT.
Please click under for The Point
The thing about Kafka is: He's really good at coming up with interesting concepts and ideas and REALLY BAD at executing them in any sort of satisfying way. Like, when I say I only like bsd until the end of the guild arc, I don't mean it was perfect. It could have handled it's female cast better, it would have been fun to see more mafia and agency team ups besides soukoku and shin soukoku, I still don't get why shin soukoku is supposed to be a replacement in training since Dazai and Chuuya still work together perfectly and even if they hate each other they hate each other less than Akutagawa and Atsushi AND have way more experience fighting together but that once again is besides the point. The point being those arcs of bsd were SATISFYING. We got introduced to two organizations, seen them butt heads and then have them forced to work together against a common enemy. It's very simple but it's effective and it's satisfying.
And then the rats struck.
While up until then bsd wasn't perfect it was fun and had lovable characters and an interesting plot and engaging dynamics. Rats arc wasn't horrible per say, the idea of the cannibalization was really fun (Though I think Kafka should have used it to get rid of Mori, nobody fuckin likes Mori) but this is where we slowly get introduced to what I think are two main failings of Kafka's writing: That he's unable to handle characters properly and that he likes writing smart things but doesn't know how to write smart things.
Kafka has a very, very bad habit of INTRODUCING TOO MANY FUCKING CHARCTERS. Every arc is a new massive group with like a bunch of members, one of who may actually end up being fleshed out before they are inventiblely replaced by another large group or maybe two why the fuck not. The mafia and the guild left lasting impressions on me and I can still name all the main members but fuck me if i know a single rat aside from Fyodor (AND ILL GET TO FYODOR). Kafka feels like someone who's idea of rising conflict is 'introduce a bigger enemy each time' and it's just so annoying. Chapters and arcs end up centering around these groups of new characters while old characters, who we loved the manga for, just fall into obscurity. He almost had me in the hunting dogs arc by giving Yosano a backstory. I was so excited! I was like!!! finally development for the agency!!! But that barely went anywhere did it. I've talked about this with Foxy but it really feels like Kafka is just BORED of the og characters and is trying to silently sideline them for his new shiny characters. When's the last time we saw Chuuya again, you know, the ex partner of one of the series protagonists? The next predicted mafia head? Is he important? Foxy tells me Dazai's been sidelined too, fUCKIN DAZAI, for a good while I was sure Kafka liked Dazai a lot better than Atsuhi for protagonist and now he's getting sidelined. I know bsd is still really popular in japan but at this point i think it would have been more merciful for Kafka to just end bsd and start a new manga with new characters instead of doing whatever weird metamorphosis this is turning out to be.
Introducing new characters isn't a bad thing of course, but bsd has become mcdonalds of new characters. They are cheap and disposable. I can't feel anything for them because I know nine times out of ten they'll barely make any impact and they'll disappear as soon as the new group slides in. When adding new characters you should do so while knowing what role those characters will play in your plot, what will they bring. If a character is just there to waffle around until they get shoved away they should probably be cut because they are wasting time and space. AND YOU SHOULDN'T SIDE LINE YOUR CORE CAST FOR UR SHINY NEW CHARACTERS YOU'LL GET BORED OF IN COUPLE OF ARCS ANYWAY, ARE YOU A TODDLER???
I still think that bsd could have been SO much better if instead of focusing on the next big evil group they just focused on shifting tension between the agency and the mafia. I mean they've had to team up for the guild and then they immediately got thrown into the cannibalization. It would have been interesting to see them pull against and pull towards those ties made during the guild arc when they are forcefully pitted against each other again (and decide that killing mori would be in everyone's best interest). Instead we got, idk I already forgot what the rats arc ended up being about, atsushi and aku team up again yadda yadda yadda, Chuuya gets done dirty and never recovers, Fyodor ruins Dazai
SO ABOUT FYODOR. As I said, Kafka strikes me as someone who REALLY likes to write geniuses and who wants people to think he's super smart but also has no idea how to show his work. At first this was okay. We had Dazai and Ranpo who were very good at pushing the plot along and sometimes you'd get explained how they got to that conclusion and sometimes you didn't but it usually wasn't a big deal. But then the writing became more and more and more of 'well he's smart so he figured it out so just trust me' without actually explaining anything and as you said, it ended up feeling boring, unengaging and very deus ex machina. You know what Kafka's writing reminds me off? That video about how Sherlock is so happy to stroke itself to how smart they look while never showing their work, you know the one. Kafka likes writing smart characters but doesn't actually know how to write smart characters so instead of giving us reasons and clues and explanations to how they come to some conclusion, how they predicted or planned or whatever, he just goes 'oh well they are super smart so they figured it out'. I don't think I need to explained why this is bad, annoying and unengaging writing. This is why i say Fyodor ruined Dazai for me, Dazai was fine as a genius but then they had to pit him against Fyodor who's another genius and things just got ridiculous. You know how in that sherlock video the guy points out the one scene that encapsulates every irritating thing about sherlocks writing. This had been it for me and BSD (thank you Foxy for helping me find the panels)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
THATS NOT HOW CODES WORK, THATS NOT HOW ANYTHING WORKS, THEY WOULD JUST BE COMING UP WITH TWO DIFFERENT SETS OF CODES HERE. Even if they were both smart enough to remember every conversation in detail, how on earth are they supposed to 'guess out' what the other means. How are they supposed to confirm or deny that's what a certain word means in a way that can be understood, how can they even guess what the word the other guessed is IF THEY ARE BOTH TALKING IN CODE. KAFKA'S ANSWER: THEY'RE MONSTERS, THEY ARE JUST THAT SMART, NO NEED TO EXPLAIN IT BECAUSE THEY ARE JUST THAT SMART AND THAT'S YOUR SOLUTION AND THAT'S BULLSHIT. This scene broke bsd in half for me and honestly made me dislike Dazai for a long time (I got better), but it honestly shows so well how Kafka wanted to make his characters so smart he actually made his manga really fuckin stupid, ruining very good and interesting concept he had started with.
In the end, Kafka writes how I wrote when I was 15. With no idea where the plot is headed, adding new characters and situations whenever it strikes his fancy whether they work for the story or not, ending up just flopping around plot holes and fizzled out character arcs and boring ass writing. And that's fine for a 15yr old writing fanfiction. It's not fine for a presumably grown ass published author of a relatively popular manga.
Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk.

Hellooooo! How do you think Dazatsu would happening ? I love this ship and even if that will never be canon… Well, we can dream, can't we ?
Hellooooo~ <3 Yeah I feel you. I love them, too, they are my OTP!
Me with my shipping glasses on: Dazatsu will definitely happen! How can it not? The signs are all THERE!
Me without my shipping glasses on: It will never happen. None of our gay ships will ever happen. And I know, you know, we all know the reason why. It’s all just fanservice and wishful thinking.
[Beware: Slight spoilers for the Hunting Dogs Arc!]
~ ~ ~
If you’re asking me from a personal POV: I am an avid fan of slow build-up when it comes to romance and shipping. I headcanon for my personal canon that Dazai and Atsushi are not a couple yet. But they are in the phase were they figure out that they have feelings for each other.
I think that Dazai realizes this pretty fast, since he has a good perception of how other people think and is able to interpret their intentions correctly. Which means, that he is able to analyze Atsushi’s personality in a very short time and estimate for himself, if he would like him or not. Despite his outer clownish behaviour, he is amazed by Atsushi when he saved him, especially considering the dire situation Atsushi is in. There are some tiny things I absolutely adore, where you can read that Dazai at least thinks that Atsushi is adorable.
Tumblr media
(”You SAVED ME from my attempted suicide no. 16527? How DARE you!? But also: Do you like to wine and dine with me?” And look at his smug smile here, damn.)
In the anime, when he asks Atsushi what he wants to eat and Atsushi answers that he only wants chazuke, Dazai blinks surprised and then giggles. And I just !!!! Man, that giggle is like a: “Haha, so cute! :3″ giggle.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Bitch, why you’re giggling like a teenage girl? No one understands right now - Kunikida, probably)
During the investigation for the white tiger Dazai learns a little bit about Atsushi, realizes that he had a harsh past, that Atsushi himself thinks he’s not worth living. And that made a deep impression, because: “Damn there was a time where I thought so about myself and I’m still struggling with it :/” and “I. Need. To. Protect. This. Boy.”
Which then leads to his infamous: “I’m not into hugging men”, because: “Haha, nope, I am NOT going to develop SUCH feelings! v.v”  And oh boy, does it look like straight out of a shoujo romance in the anime, when Dazai captures Atsushi in his arms:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(The new ghibli movie looks great!)
And Atsushi on the other hand is like: “Wow, this person is so nice, yet so weird at the same time! :) And this is actually the first time someone is N I C E to me! Who is he? What is he thinking? Wow, he’s so cool and confident, I wish that was me!”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(That is a totally heterosexual way to see someone, Atsushi. And Dazai, what is that soft look in your eyes, huh?)
And then when Atsushi has his entrance exam and he is willing to sacrifice himself for the sake of others, Dazai is genuinely surprised. And not many people are able to surprise Dazai, because he’s a schemer and thinks so far ahead.
That for me marks the moment where Dazai thinks: “Oh God, HE’S the one! *_* I want THAT ONE!” and “But that also means he’s WILLING to sacrifice himself for others! D: I need to protect him at all costs!” followed by: “I must suppress my selfish feelings, for everything I ever wanted and that is worth pursuing will be lost the moment I obtain it!”
I imagine that Dazai is constantly torn between his romantic feelings for Atsushi, which he T R I E S to cast aside and suppress, and the fact that you just can’t disconnect from your feelings like that. In the end they often get the upper hand of him.
Which results in him showing his affection in little and subtle things like: fooling around with Atsushi, trying to spend as much time as possible with him, secretly protecting him without everyone’s knowledge, just be there for him (even if that portrait of a father chapter was horribly written in general), very very very slowly opening up and showing a little bit of his true inner turmoil. And over the time this all gets stronger and he tries to honestly flirt with him, all under the disguise of clownery.
(And oh boy, THAT particular scene in 55 Minutes wasn’t even subtle anymore. I almost choked on my water).
.
I think Atsushi takes longer to realize his feelings for Dazai. He is overwhelmed that there are people who genuinely care about his well-being. So, in the beginning, I imagine that he sees Dazai as someone to look up to, since he never had someone like that back in the orphanage. But the more time he spends with Dazai the more he realizes that he can’t ignore certain things: He sometimes can’t sleep at night, he catches himself blushing for some reason, he is sometimes nervous and tries to impress Dazai.
Atsushi: Wow, Dazai is really cool! I am so grateful that he helped me and I’m so amazed by him!
Atsushi’s Brain: Nah, bro, you’re just gay.
Atsushi: Haha, that... isn’t true. I mean, it’s true that he’s... very good looking. But someone like Dazai would never fall for someone like me. Not even if I was a woman...
Atsushi’s Brain: Bro, that’s really just gay.
Atsushi: It isn’t!
Atsushi’s Brain: And what about THAT dream you had last night?
Atsushi: THAT WAS JUST A FEVER DREAM I WAS REALLY TIRED AND CONCERNED OKAY?!
And then they get forcefully separated, because Dazai needs to go to prison. But their thoughts of each other and mental connection never disappears. Dazai slowly replaces the headmaster in Atsushi’s mind:
Tumblr media
(I mean even ANGO realizes that there’s SOMETHING going on in Atsushi’s head. AND ALSO can we talk about how there is a HEART on the present Dazai is sitting?! Coincidence? That may be the case of course. But I don’t think so. In this essay I will).
And Dazai legit asks AKUTAGAWA (!!!) to protect Atsushi: “Hey, I’ll be going to prison soon due to personal reasons :) Can you please look after my future husband while I’m gone? Oh, and don’t you dare hit on him! >:| I know you’re slowly falling in love with him, too! EVERYONE IS! The competition is getting tiresome!!!”
So... yeah XD
.
I don’t think BSD’s storyline is even halfway through, and there are still a lot of things to come. There are so many possibilities what could happen, so I’m just getting along with the story as it is and patiently wait what will come next. For now, I hope that we’ll get a reunion hug between Dazai and Atsushi when he (finally) comes out of prison. Man, everyone of these characters could use a hug, tbh. I’m assuming when he comes back Atsushi may confront Dazai with some things (for example his treatment of Akutagawa in the past), and maybe Dazai will open up a little bit. But we don’t know.
Anyways, I’ve been in fandoms for many years now and have different OTPs, and never was I upset when my OTP did not become canon. I kinda always knew beforehand if there was a slight possibility or not, just rolled with it and enjoyed the ambiguous hints that were presented to us.
And of course, we can always dream and headcanon what we want. And then there is still the power of fanfics and fanarts ;D

I love Dead Apple so much and not just bc it’s fan service galore but also bc it’s riddled with a shit ton of symbolism which gives like a LOT of insight into characters! and also character dynamics!! The best example is ofc Fyodor’s monologue that has so many implications in what 4-5 lines but, my personal favorite is the Soukoku moment. part of it has to do with the fact that they’re da OTP but that aside, the meaning behind it and the representation of it all is so subtle and beautiful, I fall in love every time. so anyway thought i’d share my thoughts on the scene uh putting it below the cut bc it got long lol
First off the idea of Dazai enclosed in a circle, above the ground, beyond what can be called the realm of humans, can be construed as an allusion to his detachment from everyone. And, in a way, the manifestation of his ability “no longer human”. The main theme/conflict in DA is characters vs their abilities (and by extension, abilities represent issues each character faces and eventually overcomes) but a physical representation of “no longer human” is not possible like it’s not an animal/person/anything; it’s more like a concept. so, it’s represented on a symbolical level with Dazai trapped in a circle up above, cut off from the human world under. And the fact that Chuuya is the one who breaks into the circle is a reference to how he shares his pain and faces the same issue— isolation. (Only difference is that Dazai’s detachment is self-imposed while Chuuya’s isolation comes from the alienation he’s subjected to by others) This motif is explored in Fifteen too when Dazai decides to live after learning about Chuuya’s identity. But anyway coming back to DA, the main conflict (ability vs human) is resolved by winning against the ability and also by accepting it to a certain degree (like when Kyouka says that she needs Demon Snow) Now Dazai does it too— he wins against “no longer human” and also accepts it; but all that happens with Chuuya in the frame. The moment he touches Chuuya, he uses his ability to save him which shows his acceptance of an ability that others detest and even, he might personally hate at times, but that can be used to save someone. Unfortunately this ability also represents his nullification from being human—the deeper psychological issue as far as Dazai is concerned. However, someone does break in and make it possible for him to fall back on the ground, in extension, makes him human again/reminds him of his humanity/brings him back to the human world. And that ofc has to be Chuuya, someone who does share this issue of alienation thanks to him being half Arahabaki and half human. so, basically the subtext here is that just like Chuuya needs Dazai to save him from himself (something that is literally represented) Dazai needs Chuuya too (something that is represented thru a series of metaphors, symbols and motifs) Chuuya is the figure that makes Dazai think living is worth it simply bc he has it far worse than Dazai, he has a literal God trapped in him and his first 8 years is a void, so if someone that alien/“non human” can still push on then why can’t he (this is the message in Fifteen) and the message in DA is that Chuuya experiences the same isolation that Dazai does. The freeze frame of both of them, enclosed in a dividing bubble, cut off from everything, is strongly suggestive of this. so, Chuuya can and should be the one who helps Dazai win against his ability or rather, fight against his issue; he is the person who can help Dazai reconsider human ties and consequently, make him feel like he’s as much a part of this world as anyone else. because when isolation is shared, it doesn’t really feel like isolation anymore. the sharing becomes significant and like a doorway— it is the first of many potential bonds that are in fact possible for Dazai, giving him a chance at belonging. just like he belongs beside Chuuya, just like his ability can be used in tandem with Chuuya’s, he can, in fact, belong with others too and co-exist with them along with his ability. The things separating him from others are his own fear of loss, his uncanny intelligence and his weird ass ability but, with Chuuya in his life, the gulf closes bc Chuuya is far too strong to die on him and actually needs Dazai’s ability to survive; Chuuya is quite possibly the only person grateful for Dazai’s ability because it’s literally a life saver in his case and also, Dazai’s intelligence doesn’t put him on a solitary pedestal (like Fyodor) bc Chuuya has enough physical strength to counter it and hence, stand his ground against it. He has been doing that since they met and thanks to their rivalry, Dazai didn’t end up developing a God complex like Fyodor. (he still has an annoying superiority complex but it could have gotten worse if Chuuya wasn’t there to sort of humble him) Chuuya can stand beside Dazai as his equal and he’s imbued with every human quality imaginable; he is entirely reliant on the connections he has forged and values and embodies qualities like trust and loyalty to a profound extent, so he becomes the key for Dazai, the key to save Dazai from himself, from the darkest part of himself. The darkest part of Dazai is actually his double, Fyodor and by the end of DA, Dazai is with people while Fyodor is not which signifies that Chuuya has indeed saved him. When Dazai says, “I hope that man fulfilled his loneliness” with a soft smile, it’s not just an observation, it’s more than that— it’s a v subtle personal realization. so what DA implies is that Chuuya can and does reach him at a place where no one else can. and that is something that serves as a constant reminder to Dazai that he’s not really non-human/cancelled from human society like he thinks he is. Just by existing, Chuuya helps Dazai overcome all three of his issues:
suicidal tendencies— he thinks living is worth a try as opposed to his prev conclusion that there is nothing worth prolonging a life of suffering.
isolation— there’s a strong sense of belonging and connection with chuuya in DA that, in turn, foreshadows the development of future connections with others something that Dazai does crave but, doesn’t/can’t pursue bc of his own fear of loss (oda and ango) and also bc people idolize him too much and altho it doesn’t seem too bad on the surface, it does end up alienating him bc the dependency is working one way (akutagawa and atsushi)
superiority complex— he counters Fyodor by saying that even if humans are ‘sinfully stupid’ (and who is a better example of this than chuuya lol. the fact that the panel of fyodor saying this comes right after a chuuya panel is no conincidence it’s fairly telling) there’s nothing wrong with it! dazai’s superiority complex could have gotten worse and developed into a god complex just like fyodor’s had chuuya not strived to maintain an equal footing with him or if he hadn’t seen chuuya, someone who is actually half-god, going out his way for people and in a way, being more “human” than he ever can bc chuuya considers himself at the same level as others, if not lower (i mean, his self esteem is so low that he thinks he has to swear loyalty to a p*do) unlike dazai. so yeah that self-sacrificing nature and sense of loyalty, which may seem “sinfully stupid” is something appreciable to Dazai simply bc empathy, loyalty, trust, etc are things that human connections are based on. things that dazai lack, but chuuya embodies. things that dazai wishes he had so he could belong. so anyway, my point is chuuya just being himself does a number on dazai’s superiority complex whcih in turn helps him challenge fyodor!
All in all from the way Dazai and Chuuya’s arcs and their interactions are planned out, it’s safe to say they are indeed soulmates and I’m not trying to push this romantically, bc altho the canon is strongly suggestive, it’s not of romance per se it’s more like suggesting how they need each other to complete and save each other. Like, Dazai needs to incorporate Chuuya’s qualities and vice versa to become better versions of themselves and also needs each other on a very literal level just to survive/live on. Asagiri mightn’t draw them holding hands or smth or use conventional soulmate tropes/proofs that’s fanfic material but I’m just saying that it is v much canon that they really do complete each other and absolutely can’t survive w/o each other and that to me is really really beautiful <3

kinktober (2020): #9
Prompt #9: Exhibitionism
Explicit, SSKK/AkutAtsu & SKK/DaChuu, ~800 words
"I'm hungry," Atsushi muttered, turning his face on the pillow. He still lay where he sprawled out a good hour ago, finally having run out of steam. Akutagawa, for his part, had already showered and cleaned up and was sitting on his side of the bed, back to the headboard and ignoring Atsushi, reading silently. He didn't lower the book to look at Atsushi, but his eyes flickered from the page for a brief moment, acknowledging the interruption despite himself.
"The fridge is mere meters away," Akutagawa said, and turned the page. "I am certain you won't expire before you reach it."
Read on AO3 or
Atsushi stuck his tongue out at Akutagawa, and rolled up onto his side before collapsing onto his back, one arm flopped over his chest as he stared at the ceiling. He was hungry, really hungry, and he had no idea what time it was or whether he could get away with cooking something or not. He stuck his other hand under the pillow his head rested on, searching for his phone.
"It is ten after three," Akutagawa said, and Atsushi withdrew his hand and groaned. Too late to actually cook—or too early, depending on how you looked at it. "Think anything is open?" he asked, knowing full well that with Akutagawa's Port Mafia connections they could easily have any food delivered that Atsushi desired, any time.
"No," Akutagawa said, immediately quashing Atsushi's take-out plan.
Atsushi sat up and cracked his neck. "I'm raiding the fridge," he announced, and now Akutagawa spared him an actual look, watching as Atsushi got out of bed and stretched his arms over his head. He turned to catch Akutagawa ogling, which brought color to Akutagawa's cheeks but he didn't look away.
"You should consider putting on some underwear at least," Akutagawa said, and that made Atsushi flush pink.
"I'm not going to prance around this apartment naked," he said, scandalized, already pulling on a pair of pajama pants he'd left in a puddle on the floor earlier. Akutagawa noted that he didn't actually put on any underwear, and his mouth twitched into a small grin.
"Pervert," Atsushi huffed, and let himself out of their bedroom.
The apartment was spacious—and whoever had done room assignments (Dazai) had very wisely put their bedroom furthest from the kitchen. It made midnight snacks annoying, and three a.m. grazing even more so. However, this didn't actually stop Atsushi, and considering how much energy he'd spent tonight making Akutagawa sob his name, he was really hungry.
Single-minded in his mission, Atsushi really wasn't paying all that much attention to his surroundings. The fridge itself was taller than he was, and he stood in front of it for a few minutes, bathed only in the yellow light from its interior. After making his selections, he closed the door with his hip and hit the overhead light switch with his elbow as he passed it, depositing his goods on the counter.
The light illuminated more than just the kitchen.
It spilled over the bar-top counter and into the communal dining room, where Dazai was bent forward over the table, one knee up on its surface, the other heel flat to the floor. He was completely naked—or, as naked as he ever seemed to get, bandages hanging loose and cock pressed back flat on the surface of the table.
Behind him was Chuuya, one hand on his ass, the other inside—or at least four entire fingers at once. Atsushi stared at this utterly obscene scene for a few moments too long, deer in the headlights style—and Dazai cocked his head back, looked over his shoulder at Atsushi and licked his lips. "Good morning Atsushi-kun," Dazai said breathlessly, tone hitching as Chuuya pulled his hand out of Dazai.
Atsushi wasn't quite paying attention to Dazai's words, eyes locked on the movement; Chuuya's fingers shiny in the new light. Dazai's hole was loose enough that he could see it from here, and when Dazai started to whine Chuuya, ignoring Atsushi completely thank god, pulled Dazai's hips down enough so that he could lay his naked cock on Dazai's ass. "Like what you see?" Dazai's voice was singsong, punctuated by sharp intakes of breath as Chuuya put his cock inside, and Atsushi turned around, smacked the overhead light off, and walked out.
"I thought you were getting something to eat," Akutagawa said, when Atsushi closed the door to their bedroom behind him.
Atsushi walked to the bed and proceeded to fall face first into his pillow. "Don't eat at the table in the kitchen for the foreseeable future," he said, muffled.
"Ah." Akutagawa didn't put down his book. "Dazai and Chuuya are using the table for activities again, I take it."
"…again!?" Atsushi lifted his head, stared at the headboard. "We eat there."
"You do realize that there is likely no surface in this apartment they haven't fucked on."
Atsushi groaned, buried his face in the pillow again, perhaps hoping for self-suffocation. "I'm going to sleep."

BSD Chapter 77
SKYFALL (PART 4)
Omg I love this chapter sooo muchhh. Not only because it is one of the happiest chapters we have in a while, but also because things start to fall into place, and a lot of things are explained.
Tumblr media
Both Japanese and English are not my native language (and to be honest I’m still so high after reading the chapter) so I may make some mistakes here and there. Please don’t hesitate to let me know if you spot any!
SPOILERS AHEAD
-          Lucy jumps towards Atsushi and used her ability to take him into Anne’s room. They successfully gets in, but Hawthorn has tied a blood thread to Atsushi right before that and get to the room with them. He shoots Lucy in the arm but is immediately caught by Anne and got pulled into the locked room.
-          While they feel relieved that they have caught Hawthorn, Ango instead tells them it is their total defeat, cuz they not only cannot save Sigma, but also got seen by the Hound Dogs as the allies of the terrorists (for attempting to save Sigma before). Everything has been planned by Fyodor all along and even Dazai cannot see through it.
-          Back to the cell where Fyodor is casually reading books, while Dazai seems shocked at what happens. Fyodor says he doesn’t do anything, just praying to God, and his prayers have been listened. Dazai figures out that even the casino is a bait, and asks Fyodor why he sets up for both ADA and the Hound Dogs to be there. Fyodor casually say that it would be more beautiful that way. Fyodor says that even though Dazai tries to turn around the situation, but God prefers perfection and harmony, so he has followed the God’s wish and added one more line to the page, that “no one will believe ADA’s innocent, no matter how many proofs they get”.
-          Meanwhile, Tachihara is gathering the terrorists’ data from the server when he finds an USB. He opens it and inside is a video of Atsushi speaking about the truth behind all the incidents (about the book, the page, how ADA is set up and everything). He got a call from Teruko at that time, asking if he finds anything, but after a moment of thinking, he decides not to tell Teruko about the USB and the video he saw. Teruko then tells him that the situation has got out of their hands. The terrorists plan to use currency as weapons so it has become an international matter. So she tells Tachihara to go back to Port Mafia and track down the location of the two ADA members that got away (Tanizaki and Kenji). Tachihara tells Teruko that he is not sure if he can act like a Mafia well, to which Teruko laughs out and says he is born to do infiltration mission. She reminds him of how he used to use his ability to get the secret information, and how he uses it to kill off the two Black Lizard members who tried to cover for ADA.
-          Tachihara has a flashback about him visiting Hirotsu and Gin after the incident. They still don’t know about his real identity and are both glad to know he is alright. They both say that their wounds are surprisingly light because the attackers do not hit their vitals at all. Tachihara tells them that he has to go and before leaving the room, he asks Hirotsu if Hirotsu thinks he is meant for the mafia. Both Gin and Hirotsu start to laugh.
-          We are back to jail where Dazai is laughing at Fyodor too. He says Fyodor doesn’t know a thing about God, that God doesn’t give a damn about “perfection” and “harmony”. We then see a flashback of Odasaku and Gide, when Dazai talks about how God is only good at uncertainty and irrationality. And that is the weakness him and Fyodor share. No matter how many plans they come up with, in the end they are still stuck in a jail at the end of nowhere. And the real ones to make the world turn, are the ones who are striving, crying, and bleeding in the midst of all that uncertainties. And with the strength of those souls, everything he and Fyodor can do is to watch.
-          Back to Tachihara’s flashback, Hirotsu laughs and tells him he is a mafia, in and out, a model that everyone in the Mafia should look up to. That is when Tachihara realizes that he doesn’t infiltrate the Mafia to avenge for his brother, but because he wants to become “something”. That’s why he doesn’t shoot Yosano. He hears Yosano saying sorry about his brother and gets all confused, like what in the world are the ADA. He then asks Hirotsu, if he thinks that ADA are really the terrorists. Hirotsu seems surprised and says maybe Tachihara has hit his head somewhere, because both him and Gin believe without a doubt that there is no way ADA could be the terrorists. And as a Mafia, Tachihara should know that too.
-          Back in jail, Dazai repeats what Fyodor said before about human being sinfully stupid, but adds that they are not as boring of an existence as Fyodor thinks.
-          Tachihara finally realizes that ADA cannot be the terrorists, no matter how he thinks about it. We can see in the background the image of the page being torn. (I assume that it is a sign that the spell of the book is somewhat broken here, as Tachihara, who should not believe ADA at all, finally comes to sense and decide to side with them)
-          In the last scene, Sigma is going to hit the ground when he notices Gogol waiting for him, alive, laughing, and saying its time for the magic of reviving the death.
And that is the end of the chapter. I had a lot of fun reading and translating it. And I’m so glad everyone is aliveeee!!!! Now I just need to see Kunikida…
Anyway, thanks for reading my long post again. And see you next month :3

We had another anime club meeting today and almost every episode we watched gave me thoughts worth sharing so here they are.
We began with episode 5 of Golden Kamuy and I’ve now come to the realisation that it’s not a comedy anime like I first thought, or an action anime like it first seemed, but a cooking anime. Even though they mostly eat meat and that’s usually a turn-off for me, the fact that it’s centered on Ainu traditions makes it A+++, very good cultural exchange.
We continued with two episodes of Kino no Tabi (2003). The first was about a country with the tradition of creating traditions. It was a fun episode, but with a fairly cruel twist at the end. Kino no Tabi is great in how you never know what kind of country they’ll visit and how it always gives you a lot to think about - so many questions about morality! I really liked the structure of this episode, it was a bit different compared to what we usually get in that we saw several short visits rather than the usual full episode exploration. Variation is always great and I really loved how all countries/encounters ended up being connected to each other.
The second Kino no Tabi episode began with Kino and Hermes lying in a bed of red flowers and I was instantly struck with stress and fear because I remembered this scene from the 2017 anime. I couldn’t remember which episode it was, only that it meant we’d be in for a BAD_TIME. Yup, turns out it was Otona no Kuni, Kino’s “origin story”. I’d forgotten most things from it, like how all the kids in Kino’s home country get lobotomised when they’re 12 years old so they can turn into adults and work with a smile on their face even though they’d otherwise hate their job and life. The episode hit me even harder now, because I’ve thought a lot about my own place in society and I have pretty strong feelings about going against what society tells me to do to pursue my own happiness. Watching Kino be able to do that was great. Or you know, it was horrible and traumatising, but at least they made it and it made me love Kino and Kino no Tabi even more. I also want to shout-out the scene where Kino takes up their new identity, if you want a cool genderqueer/agender character look no further!
Next up was Martian Successor Nadesico. Sursprisingly I’m kinda loving it? I don’t really follow along with the plot, but I also don’t think that matters at all. It’s a mecha parody anime from the 90′s and all the hijinks and jokes carry the whole show regardless of what’s actually going on. I love any anime with an anime within the anime that one or several characters are obsessed over and we get updates on. The way Akito and Gai bonded over their love for Gekiganger 3 was amazing and super fun to watch. I also can’t believe that they apparently killed off Gai (and that I completely forgot about it, since I didn’t think they were serious about it, whooops). It’s great how episode 4 showed us Akito mourn the loss of his newfound friend. It stood out nicely with everyone else seemingly not caring at all and I could relate to him wonder why he has to be alone in his sorrows. I also liked the girl he confided in, I even thought that they’d make a nice pair so I was very pleased when the episode ended with them getting together. I also loved that it happened right in front of Yurika who’s been telling everyone that Akito is her bf or something along those lines. It’s kinda annoying when anime characters do that and especially when it comes to romance it’s super satisfying for me to watch characters not get what they want (don’t psychoanalyse me please). All in all it was great to see them mix things up a little and give us something unexpected rather than having Yurika continue to claim they’re dating when they actually aren’t (even if it’s only for a little while and they end up together later). Oh and I also love all the new pilots, they’re such disasters.
Following that we watched episodes 4-5 of Spice and Wolf. The anime is well-made and Holo’s a great character. Since I like her it’s nice enough to watch her interact with Lawrence. I’m not invested in their relationship and I don’t care for their romance, apart from appreciating that they actually have some chemistry and it’s great to see Holo make some advances already. Unfortuantely I couldn’t care less for the plot, this silver coin bs is super boring and uninteresting. Hopefully it’ll be over soon and the anime will get more engaging again, although I can’t think of any merchant business that would be appealing to me. I don’t see myself falling in love with Spice and Wolf, but if I can enjoy it a bit more in the future that’ll be great.
We ended the evening with episodes 5-6 of Bungou Stray Dogs. I’d seen them before when they originally aired in 2016, but my memory was a bit hazy and rediscovering that Ranpo doesn’t actually have supernatural powers, he’s just like that was a great moment. I’m still annoyed at the “over the top” comedy with the funny faces, twitches and sounds, but I can appreciate the anime having that as a distinct style. They’re also getting less frequent and annoying as Atsushi (it’s mainly his doings) becomes more used to the Armed Detective Agency and all its idiots.
I feel like I like the anime more now than I did 4 years ago. I think I understand the characters and their quirks better and how it’s the trade-off for their powers. One has to wonder how much that has to do with the fact that we’re living in a post-Sarazanmai world where I’m more partial to the Mamo-Hosoyan pairing, which certainly helps, but isn’t everything. Apart from the reaction humor, there’s some genuinely great humor and fun character moments. I also like the superpowers and twists. Akutagawa comes across as an edgy chuuni character so I’m not intimidated by him, but I remember the first season ending with another villain character who was super intriguing, so I’m looking forward to continue the series to that point and beyond!

A Chill in His Bones [Dazatsu Secret Santa]
Heyoooo! It hasn’t even been Christmas Eve here for an hour but I’m so excited to post, so here’s my gift for you @looking-for-stray-dogs! I really really hope you like this! Your prompts were all so nice, I had such a hard time choosing one!
Prompt: “In the middle of a stark winter landscape, with nothing but snow for miles and miles and the howling wind, Atsushi finds Dazai.”
(hope you don’t mind me putting it under a read more- the post is a little long! happy holidays!)
@dazatsu-exchange
A faint chill seeped in through the walls of the dormitory, drifting through the room and permeating through Dazai’s thick sweater. Absently he rubbed his arms, listening to the clinking in the kitchen as Atsushi prepared a warm meal. He wondered for a moment if the heater had been broken; the coldness seeping through his skin and sinking into his bones said it was. To his chagrin, every thought that flitted through his distracted mind left a lingering longing for warmth, one he couldn’t shake off no matter how hard he tried. Thoughts of cozy fires and warm drinks; thoughts of long embraces that he could feel in his bones as contentment spread through his body; thoughts of a deeper connection that always seemed to slip out of his grasp the moment he obtained it; all seemed too far and too luxurious for him to ever obtain.
A particularly strong gust of wind caught his attention for a fleeting second. The howling fell upon ears that felt as if they were filled with cotton as the gust shook the glass in the window panes. He watched as the branches of the lone tree in the yard shiver, shaken by the wind. Stripped bare of their leaves, they looked vulnerable and scared. Dazai wondered, for a moment, if he was as transparent as the trees outside: could anybody tell when he felt as if he were on display, shaking with the slightest breeze? Was there anything left of him worth staying for when his last leaf fell, leaving behind the bare bones of a broken man?
Tilting his head down again, Dazai crossed his arms and slumped down, debating his next move. There wasn’t anything for him to do here after Atsushi insisted he could hold his own in the kitchen, and sitting there alone wasn’t doing anything to help his situation. He had thought he wanted company, that maybe he could numb out his own voice with somebody else’s, yet all he seemed to do was bother the one person who seemed to still have patience for him. If he left, Atsushi might look for him, but all he’d have to say is that he decided he wanted to be left alone and that they could talk tomorrow. Maybe he could whip up some sort of excuse regarding work - Atsushi would hate to prevent him from finishing something for the others at the agency, wouldn’t he?
His left foot started bouncing on its own the longer he thought, nervous and uncomfortable energy crackling through his veins like static. That fuzziness was starting to take over more and more lately, and he didn’t think it had anything to do with the steadily diminishing sunlight. The month of December was hardly halfway through and he was already getting tired of seeing the smiling faces and cozy decor in shops and cafes around the city. Too many people were reconnecting and rejoicing, celebrating another year together and giving gifts for that very reason. When he was out with Atsushi the younger always softened at these scenes, a faint sparkle in his eyes when he turned to Dazai to say something. Every time, Dazai faked a smile and nodded, adding another thing to the ever-growing list of discrepancies between him and everyone else.
At this point, his surprise at how frozen he became every year was rather pitiful. As holidays inched closer his blood became colder, circulating through his veins as slush. His heart seemed to beat more sluggishly and an ever-present headache started as the cold crept in until Dazai could barely tell himself apart from the ice the winter would bring. Still, he hoped that maybe something had changed, that maybe now, since he had someone so warm and welcoming, he could slowly thaw himself out before he caused any problems. When that didn’t prove to be true, he couldn’t help but be disappointed - and worried for what that meant for him.
Another strong gust of wind came, rattling Dazai to his core. He shivered again, curling in on himself in an attempt to retain what little warmth he felt left. Different parts of him were slowly yet steadily becoming more and more numb as the wind howled, echoing off his skull and tearing through every thought like hungry beasts. Snowdrifts were building up yet the blizzard still persisted, snowflakes with razor-sharp edges tearing through his mind. Dazai couldn’t stop this storm - it was foolish to think he ever could. If he could still feel his fingers, he would clench them into fists or bite his lip, hoping the pain of his fingernails or teeth would pull him out of the storm.
Yet he felt too numb. He could only listen to the onslaught of self-deprecation and watch himself travel further from civilization.
With a quiet sound, a cup was placed in front of him, barely drawing Dazai out of his thoughts. His head felt too heavy to lift, yet he did it anyway and was met with Atsushi’s worried smile. Carefully, Atsushi placed a hand on Dazai’s knee. He was too warm and Dazai had been out in the cold for too long. His knee burned and he wanted to jerk away, yet the layer of ice melting away felt too nice to leave.
“What are you thinking of?” Atsushi asked softly, kneeling down to be more level with Dazai. The room around them was quiet, save for the occasional tremble of glass as the wind continued to blow. Dazai glanced out the window, taking in the gray clouds as they hung over the city yet refused to let go of the rain or snow they might hold. After following his gaze, Atsushi slowly trailed his hand from Dazai’s knee to his shoulder, the slightest skim of his fingers lighting a fire over Dazai’s skin. It hurt to have someone so near to him after having been huddled on his own. He was tired of hurting.
Finally getting the hint that he wouldn’t be getting an answer, Atsushi sighed and grabbed the cup he set out for Dazai. Using one hand to push his knees down, Atsushi gently cupped Dazai’s hands around his drink and held them there, watching his face for a change in expression. Not wanting to face Atsushi’s gentle gaze, Dazai watched the tea ripple with every breath he took. Atsushi’s hands were too warm against his own, his face too gentle and his heart too kind. Dazai wanted to fall in to him and take solace like he was clearly offering, yet he worried Atsushi wouldn't be able to- or wouldn’t want to- catch him. If he fell, it would all be up to Atsushi: would he catch him and care for him, or let him shatter like the icicle he was?
“You know, I’m glad you’re here,” Speaking softly, Atsushi slowly removed his hands from Dazai’s and sat on his heels, placing his hands in his lap. As he played with his own fingers with his eyes cast downward, he looked almost bashful. Dazai leaned his head up, a little more attentive. “I know winter is rough on you, but it’s nice to have someone to be with for once.”
Dazai let out a sound to let Atsushi know he was listening, nodding his head ever so slightly. Sharp shards of crystal ice ripped at his brain, accusing him of ruining the holidays for Atsushi.
He could feel Atsushi’s realization before he had the chance to say anything. Dazai opened his mouth to correct himself, but Atsushi beat him to it. The voice interrupting him was sweet, miles away from the scolding he was expecting. "It's hard to see everybody around you smiling and laughing while you're stuck in the dark. Believe me, I know," he continued. Dazai arched an eyebrow before fully fixating on Atsushi's face. There was a far-off look in his eyes as he remembered some misery of his past. He looked for a moment like he probably did back then, traces of an emptiness and jealousy swirling around in his eyes. When he turned to look at Dazai, those waters stilled and flooded with a peace Dazai wondered if he could find for himself.
"I guess it's just good to feel like I'm on the other side of things now," Atsushi finished with a shrug. "And I'm excited for you to join me."
Huffing out a laugh, Dazai turned his attention to the untouched drink in his hand. He felt as though he had gulped the whole thing, the warmth trailing through his system like an old river. The sensation would be fleeting, he knew, but it felt oh so good now to be something other than numb. With a gentle clink he set the cup down on the table and reached for Atsushi, drawing him near in a hug. Their legs bumped against each other awkwardly as Dazai guided Atsushi closer and the muscles in Dazai's back were strained, but Atsushi was warm and solid in his gasp. He could still feel the flecks of ice slashing at his brain, cold nipping at the edges of his thoughts stubbornly, but at least for the moment he had a flame to huddle near and help him fend them off.
Atsushi made no move to get up until he could feel Dazai’s hands twitch behind him. When he did pull away, he had a fond smile on his face. Briefly, Dazai debated lurching forward and kissing him, teasing him, and letting him in further than he’d ever let anyone before. The small part of him he hid away peered out and quickly darted away again. There was too much...too much to truly let himself lay bare- Dazai didn’t know if he’d ever be ready.
Still, it felt nice to know somebody had the map to find him.
"Let me know if you need anything, okay? The food is almost ready." After affectionately cradling Dazai’s face in one hand, Atsushi lifted himself up from the ground and walked back to the kitchen, humming an old Christmas song underneath his breath. Dazai stared at the spot he occupied, worrying as the cold seeped into his spot. His eyes drifted to the table, where the cup of tea sat, still steaming.
Something to keep warm.
The wind howled again, shaking the windows once more. Dazai didn't flinch this time; instead, he sipped at his tea.

“So, Nomura-san...”
I placed a hot cup of tea on the table in front of him and sat back to scan through the briefing one more time.
“It says here you want the Agency to look into your teacher?”
“Uh, yes,” Nomura mumbled, picking up the cup with a small, grateful nod.
He took a small, hesitant sip before answering.
“That’s right. Professor Matsuyama Shin. He teaches modern Japanese history to the grad students at my school.”
“Grad students?”
Nomura nodded and I looked down to check the sheet one more time.
Nomura Ken, age nineteen, was a first-year student at one of the local universities in Yokohama (not the one I’d dropped out of). According to the briefing, he wanted us to look into a professor in his department but declined to state why. And it seemed he’d made this appointment only a few hours ago. I put the briefing down and studied him.
“But you’re an undergrad,” I said slowly. “If he doesn’t teach your class, how do you know this professor?”
Nomura colored. He lowered his eyes and fidgeted in his seat. I tried not to stare. With his large, expressive eyes and short black hair, Nomura bore a distinct resemblance to a famous anime character he shared a first name with and it was taking everything I had not to point it out.
“It’s kind of a long story,” he said shyly, making the resemblance to that anime character even stronger. “Would you like to hear it?”
I nodded and picked up a pen to start taking notes.
“I met Sensei a few years ago,” Nomura said, “before I entered university. I was taking a day trip to the beach with a friend of mine when he suddenly got called home.”
He smiled apologetically.
“Family emergency, you know? I told him it wasn’t a big deal and I could go with him if he needed but he said I shouldn’t have to cut my trip short because of him. I ended up sitting there on the beach all by myself for the rest of the afternoon, just checking social media and going for a swim whenever I felt like it. That’s when I saw Sensei.”
He laughed a little then, a small, jittery noise that sounded more like a hiccup than an actual release. But his shoulders looked less tense now and his fingers weren’t gripping the teacup as tightly as before.
“Sensei... he’s kind of a weird person to be honest. While I was sitting there looking at my phone, he had this entire stack of books with him, really old-looking ones, kind of thick. When I asked him what he was reading, he just said, ‘history books,’ and asked me if I wanted to read one.”
His expression softened.
“There’s no way he could’ve known it at the time but I had already been thinking about applying to the history program at the university, so I took up his offer. Before I knew it, we’d spent the entire afternoon just sitting there, reading those books and discussing what we read.”
Looking sheepish, Nomura scratched his cheek.
“I know it sounds kind of odd, a high school kid sitting there on the beach, reading these old books with a stranger almost twice his age but it was nice. I honestly had a lot of fun and it felt kind of natural to end up exchanging emails at the end of the day. That’s when I found out he was a professor and I’ve been calling him ‘Sensei’ ever since.”
I smiled.
“He sounds like a nice guy.”
“Yeah,” Nomura said, taking another sip of his tea. “Yeah, he is. He’s really easy to talk to and he knows a lot about the subject he teaches. I’ve been helping him out between classes since his teaching assistant got sick and he’s kind of started acting like my mentor since then. It’s great. Or, it was great...”
He lowered his eyes and stared into his tea.
“The thing is... he’s been acting kind of strange lately. It’s pretty obvious there’s something bothering him but he won’t tell me or anyone else what it was. A few weeks ago, his wife came by to drop something off for him and he actually snapped at her.”
He chewed on his lower lip.
“I’ve never seen anything like it. He’s always been so patient, even his wife said so and it’s not like him to yell.”
Nomura sighed.
“He apologized to her and then to everyone else for making a scene but I’m seriously getting worried about him. He keeps staring at this picture in his office and talking to it.”
I put down my pen and observed Nomura as he appeared to shrink in on himself.
“I got curious, so I asked him who was in this picture and he answered, ‘Natsuki and Kei.’ I know Natsuki-san is his wife but I didn’t know who Kei-san is. And when I asked about him...”
Nomura sighed again.
“He just stopped talking entirely.”
“I see...”
“This is going to sound kind of strange,” Nomura admitted, squirming a little in his seat, “but I couldn’t help thinking that Kei-san has something to do with Sensei’s recent behavior. I’ve known him for years, and although we weren’t exactly the closest of friends, he’s never mentioned Kei once even though he was fine showing me pictures of his wife and his other friends.”
He grew quiet.
“Yesterday, he accidentally left something at his office. I knew where he lives so I went by his house to drop it off but he wasn’t there. Natsuki-san was instead and she insisted I stay for a cup of tea before I went back home. I...”
He twisted his hands in his lap.
“I ended up asking her about Kei-san, since she was in the picture with him. She told me that he was an old friend of both hers and Sensei’s and that...”
Nomura trailed off. I wasn’t sure if he was going to continue talking but then I saw his lips moving, so I leaned in to listen.
“...Kei-san actually died several years ago, long before I’d met Sensei at the beach.”
I stiffened as Nomura continued, looking pained as he spoke.
“She said the police ruled it as a suicide, since there was a note and everything but apparently she and Sensei were never allowed to see the contents of the note.”
Suicide...
Without meaning to, I glanced out beyond the stained glass panels of the client booth, my eyes sliding towards the desk area I shared with Dazai. Shadows moved beyond the tinted, lightly frosted walls. A phone rang and I heard Atsushi pick it up and answer. I turned back to Nomura.
“Kusunoki-san.”
“Y-yes?”
I started. Nomura suddenly sounded very serious.
“I want you to look into who Kei-san was.”
He clasped his hands together and squeezed them tightly, his face drawn.
“And...”
Nomura looked up at me, his dark eyes determined.
“I want you to tell me if Sensei was responsible for Kei-san’s death.”
I breathed in sharply.
“What...?”
My throat felt dry and I swallowed before trying to speak again.
“Wait. Why... why would you think Sensei–I mean, Professor Matsuyama had something to do with...?”
“Because I realized,” Nomura said, “that these episodes of odd behavior seem to come after he spends long hours in the office. When he got home last night, he got really cagey when he realized Natsuki-san and I were talking about Kei-san and when I asked him why it upset him so much when we were just talking about his old friend, he said this.”
His jaw tightened.
“‘I’m sorry about what happened to Kei. Really, I am, but he is my burden and mine alone.’”
A hush fell over the room. I could still hear Atsushi talking on the other side of the glass-paneled doors but it seemed somehow muffled by the oppressive silence that was filling the booth like fog.
I cleared my throat a little.
“Um, Nomura-san.”
I tried to put what I hoped was a professional look on my face.
“If you suspect a homicide might have taken place, why not go directly to the police?”
“Because they already closed out the investigation,” Nomura answered dully. “And unless something new happens in regards to the case, there’s no way they’re going to reopen it.”
“I see...”
I felt a chill creeping into my veins.
Outside, Atsushi hung up the phone. I heard him asking someone if they’d seen Dazai. When the person answering said they hadn’t, Atsushi began walking around, calling for our mentor, who did not answer...
“And besides...” Nomura was chewing on his lip again. “I don’t want to see him get in trouble.”
He sucked in a breath, a shaky one, and bent forward over his hands, his bangs falling so that they obscured his eyes.
“I...”
His knuckles were going white. Atsushi was still walking around, calling for Dazai, who was still, seemingly, nowhere to be found.
“Professor Matsuyama is...”
Nomura seemed to be thinking very carefully about his words. So carefully, in fact, that he didn’t seem to know how to speak of it.
From outside the booth, I heard Atsushi sigh, an audible sign of defeat. He trudged back to his desk, his feet dragging along the tiles.
“He’s more like a close relative than a teacher,” Miura sighed at last. “I don’t know how else to put it but... he’s very important to me.”
Ah.
My eyes traveled to the shadows moving outside the booth, to the lack of a tall, laughing figure wearing a trench coat.
I understood.
“You care very much for your Sensei, don’t you?” I asked gently.
A soft smile spread across my face as Miura looked up at me.
“I completely understand. I think we can help you, Nomura-san.”
“Really?”
Nomura looked ecstatic. He rose from his seat, relief etched into his every feature.
“Thank you so much, Kusunoki-san. I’m really grateful—”
I held up a hand to interrupt him.
“But before we start,” I said, my chest tightening as I spoke. “I want you to be prepared.”
Nomura froze.
“For what?”
“For the possibility that Kei-san’s death was exactly what the police determined it to be,” I said. “But more importantly...”
I swallowed.
“I want you to be prepared for what comes after if we do find out that Professor Matsuyama was somehow responsible for what happened to Kei-san.”
Hearing my tone, Nomura tensed.
Was he preparing himself emotionally for what was to come if it turned out that his Sensei was indeed a murderer?
I grew quiet, thinking back to the conversation I had with Dazai during my last case about the theoretical “goodly apple.” And about how it may change Nomura’s relationship to his mentor should his worst fears turn out to be true.
“Because I’m required by Agency policy to turn over my case files to the police,” I said, at last. “That is, if we do uncover any evidence of wrongdoing. Is... that alright with you, Nomura-san?”
After a beat, Nomura nodded. He looked determined. Nervous, but determined.
“Yes.”
I nodded back.
“Okay, then. In that case...”
I scooped up the papers on the table, tucked them back into the envelope and slowly got to my feet. Somehow, I managed to put the professional smile back on my face, even though I was honestly feeling too tense to.
“I look forward to working with you.”
***
That odd chill that had slowly settled into my bones as Nomura and I discussed the case lingered even after I saw him out the door. It stayed with me as I began walking back to my desk and grew stronger as I stopped next to the colorful client booth.
Suicide...
It was something I was all too familiar with. President Fukuzawa couldn’t have known exactly what the case was about before assigning it to me (after all, Nomura wouldn’t disclose the full details until he was inside the booth) but even if I had known, I wouldn’t have refused the case. President Fukuzawa believed I could take this case and something about that made me want to believe in myself. And besides...
I gripped the case files tightly against my chest.
If I wanted to climb the ranks so that I could be that much closer to finally confessing to Kunikida... this was the way to do it. One case at a time.
No matter what the case may involve.
I was about to step beyond the hedges when something caught my eye.
In the space between client booth and the hedgerow was a large decorative plant.
I stopped in front of it and stared.
I’d never seen this plant here before. It looked to be comprised entirely of broad, fan-shaped leaves—so many, in fact, that I couldn’t even see the wall just a few feet behind it. Stranger still, the plant was lined up with the client booth so that there was a fair amount of space between it and the back wall...
But as I reached out to touch one of the leaves, the plant moved.
I let out a shriek and jumped backwards as the plant was abruptly pushed forward. Bit by bit, a familiar bandage-covered figure emerged from the space behind it and I groaned when I saw who it was.
Speaking of connections to suicide...
“I should’ve guessed,” I sighed as Dazai moved a few of the leaves aside on his way out of his makeshift hiding space.
“What were you doing back...”
But as I watched Dazai carefully pick his way around the side of the plant—the plant that hadn’t been there before my meeting with Nomura—something dawned on me.
“...there?”
Dazai had been sitting right behind the client booth the entire time. I’d heard Atsushi calling for Dazai through that very wall.
I frowned.
“Dazai-san.”
“Hm?”
The bandaged brunette cocked his head towards me. Smiling, he continued brushing bits of dirt off his vest and pants, not even flinching when I shot him an accusatory glare.
“Were you listening in on my client meeting just now?” I asked, tucking my folder against my body as I crossed my arms.
Dazai’s brown eyes widened.
“Kusunoki-kun!”
He placed one half-bandaged hand over his heart, looking thoroughly wounded.
“What makes you think I’d do such a thing?”
“Oh, I dunno,” I said sarcastically, fighting the urge to roll my eyes. “Maybe it’s because you followed me into the booth earlier and tried to stay there?”
“I was just looking for my headphones,” he whined.
“Then where are they?”
“Oh, Kusunoki-kun,” Dazai sighed.
He stepped forward and took my hand.
“You’re so sweet, being so concerned about my belongings. If your offer to buy me new headphones is still good, I—”
“It’s not,” I said, pulling my hand away with a sharp snap of my wrist.
I sighed, tucked my folder more securely under my arm and studied him as he shrugged and started searching behind the plant for something.
First, he tried to follow me into the booth and then, when that didn’t work out, he ended up sitting outside anyway just so he could listen in...
I felt my irritation slowly wane as I watched him continue to rummage around.
Was he that interested in seeing my case or was I right in guessing he was worried about me?
The folder felt slightly heavier under my arm and I adjusted it once again as Dazai pulled something out from behind the plant with his lanky, bandaged forearms.
He wouldn’t admit it when I asked him earlier but... he really was worried about me, wasn’t he?
As I watched, a corner of the bandages around his left wrist caught around one of the leaves and came untucked. It began to unravel.
“...Kei-san actually died several years ago... The police ruled it as a suicide.”
The air in the room suddenly seemed much thinner than before.
“Hey, Dazai-san...?”
“Hm?”
Noticing at last that his bandage was coming undone, Dazai took the portable game console he’d just retrieved and tucked it into his black vest. Smiling, he looked up at me and began re-wrapping his bandage.
“What is it?”
I hesitated. My eyes were firmly locked on the motions of Dazai’s hand as he wrapped his bandage more securely around his wrist.
I’d never really thought about it before but... why was he covered in bandages...? Was there something under there he didn’t want us to see?
I grabbed my own wrist.
Like layers of mottled scars?
“Oh, um... Nothing, really.”
I smiled softly and as Dazai watched my expression change, his eyebrows slowly rose into his bangs.
“Atsushi-kun was looking for you earlier,” I said at last. “I could hear him calling for you, even from inside the client booth. Why don’t you go find him and see what he needs?”
I moved to walk past him but before I could, Dazai stepped in front of me.
“What’s this, Kusunoki-kun?”
He bent down a little and studied my face. He rubbed his chin, keeping his bandaged wrist at eye level as he moved; the bandage came untucked again. I returned my gaze to Dazai’s face a second too late and his deep brown eyes instantly became piercing.
“Don’t tell me...”
The corners of his lips quirked upwards and as I watched, a sly smile slowly spread across his face.
He knew what I’d been thinking.
“Did you want to goof off and play games too?” he asked, slowly pulling the console out of his vest. “If so, I know a great place where we can sit and play games, completely unbothered. Just the two of us!”
He waved the console in front of me.
“Or maybe...”
The bandage around his wrist unraveled even further, an entire loop of the stark-white fabric slipping off his wrist all at once. Dazai’s voice remained bright, but his eyes looked much darker than before.
“You’re finally reconsidering my proposal of a double suicide?”
I stiffened.
The inside of my wrist began to tingle and Dazai’s grin widened.
“Not on your life,” I whispered.
Tightening my grip on my folder, I brushed past him.
“That’s the whole point,” Dazai said, sounding disappointed.
But I kept walking and didn’t stop until I got back to my desk. Ignoring him, I shoved my folder into my messenger bag and began packing.
Seeing this, Dazai approached.
“Going out?” he asked, walking past the hedgerows and into the main office area.
I didn’t answer.
“If it’s a snack run, do you think you could get me—”
“No.”
His face fell.
“Aw, c’mon,” he wheedled. “I didn’t even tell you what it is I wanted yet—”
“The answer is no,” I snapped, throwing the strap of my messenger bag over my shoulder and grabbing my coat. “Whatever it is you want, go get it yourself. I’m not running any errands for you today.”
“Then where are you going?” he asked.
I could feel his sharp brown eyes following me as I quickly strode through the office and towards the front door.
“Don’t you have that meeting with Kunikiiiiida-kun at the end of the day?”
I faltered, my hand stilling on the doorknob.
That’s right. He’d heard that too...
“That meeting...”
I shot a look over my shoulder, at the bandaged brunette still standing in the middle of the lobby with one hand in his pocket, his game console held loosely in the other. His bandage had unraveled even more and was now trailing on the ground. Some of his wrist was exposed...
I tore my eyes away, not wanting to see.
“That meeting is none of your business,” I said quietly.
I turned back around and walked out the door.
***
“The file on... let’s see...”
The girl at the counter paused to write down the name.
“‘Kei?’”
She frowned and looked up.
“Do you have a last name that goes with that?”
“Uh, no but...”
I glanced down at the packet and tried not to make a face. I knew this was going to be a long-shot but I had to give it a try at least...
I offered the girl a small, hesitant smile and placed the relevant page of my case file onto the counter before her.
“I was wondering if you could try to look up the file with the information in here.”
Shooting me a doubtful look, the girl took the page from me and scanned through it. Her eyes widened.
“Uh... Kusunoki-san, was it?”
She chewed her lip.
“I know you’re with the Armed Detective Agency and that your cases are very important... but as much as I want to help you, I can’t.”
She made an apologetic face.
“Not with this alone, anyway. We don’t even know where the alleged suicide took place or what year. Without that information, I won’t be able to find anything.”
She slid the paper back to me.
“Kei is a very common first name, after all...”
“I understand,” I sighed.
I slipped the paper back into my bag and zipped it up. “Thank you for your time.”
“I really am sorry, Kusunoki-san,” she said and she really did look it. “Come back when you’ve got some more information?”
I nodded, bowed politely and turned around to leave.
I really didn’t know what I was expecting.
When I’d left the Agency earlier, I honestly had no idea where I was going to go. I’d just wanted to get away from Dazai but as I headed out of the building, I realized this would be a good chance to get a head start on my case, maybe see if I could get the police report on Kei’s suicide. But unfortunately, given the small amount of information I had to go off of, it wasn’t enough. I’d have to do some more background investigating before I could obtain the report.
Neither I nor Nomura knew Kei’s last name. The one person who knew for sure would be Professor Matsuyama, but somehow I got the feeling that barging into his office and asking questions about a dead former friend was a good way to get kicked out or get the case revoked. Not to mention, I didn’t want to get Nomura in trouble either...
I paused at the crosswalk and glanced down at the report in my hand.
Nomura had mentioned a photograph in Professor Matsuyama’s office, a photograph showing the professor, his wife and the mysterious Kei. Was it possible that Professor Matsuyama’s wife knew Kei as well? If they were in a photograph together, then they must’ve at least met before.
But how was I supposed to get in touch with her without raising any red flags?
I took out my phone to check the time.
I’d been out for less than an hour, so there was no way Kunikida would be back yet. Should I try going to the library, maybe see if I could get information on Professor Matsuyama there and try to find Kei that way?
I stared at the numbers on my phone, chewing the inside of my cheek as the minute digit abruptly changed.
No, an hour barely gave me enough time to travel to the university library, much less do any sort of meaningful investigation. If I wanted to spend the rest of the work day doing something productive and avoiding Dazai, returning only at the end of the day so that I could meet with Kunikida, I’d have to think of something else...
Suddenly, the phone in my hand lit up with a new message.
It was from Kunikida.
“We finished early,” it said. “I’m heading back to the Agency as we speak. Sorry for constantly changing the time, but would now be okay?”
“Yes, of course!” I exclaimed out loud as I texted, relieved.
Thank God. I was really at a loss back there.
Shoving my phone into my bag, I ran for the nearby bus station just as the massive vehicle pulled into the stop.
Maybe if I got back to the Agency fast enough, I could even ask for some advice on the case, given that he was still technically my mentor. I just hoped my other mentor wouldn’t be there when I returned...
***
“Huh? Kyou-chan?”
Yosano blinked at me in surprise as she passed me going down the stairs. For some reason, the elevator wasn’t working when I’d gotten back and in my rush to get to the fourth floor office, I’d nearly smacked into her on my way up.
“Why are you heading back into the office? The day’s over!”
“Ah,” I mumbled, bowing hurriedly and trying to get past her. “I have a meeting to get to.”
The doctor’s purple-toned eyes widened.
“At this hour? With who?”
Why did I have to go red now? Why?!
“I...” I stammered, looking away. “I, uh...”
“Oh, Kyou-chan. Really?” she sighed.
Before I could stop her, she grabbed my arm with one black-gloved hand and began guiding me down the stairs with her.
“It’s almost the end of the week,” she griped, not listening to the frantic gibberish that was coming out of my mouth. “You’ve been working really hard and I think you deserve a break! Come with me, we’re going to get dinner at this new izakaya I found and have ourselves a nice time.”
“But Yosano-sensei!” I burst out at last. “I really do have to go! You see my meeting is with K-Kunikida-san and—”
I flinched as Yosano stopped walking immediately and turned around to give me an odd look. I felt my face burn even hotter as she eyed me suspiciously.
“Hohh...”
She let go of my arm.
“Well, why didn’t you say so sooner?” she asked, the corners of her glossy pink lips turning upwards into a knowing smirk.
The look on her face was eerily reminiscent of Dazai...
Smiling, Dr. Yosano clapped me on the shoulder and waved goodbye as she descended the stairs.
“Don’t stay too late!” she called after me as I bolted.
I could practically hear the grin on her face as her words echoed after me up the stairwell.
“And good luck~!”
“Luck?” Atsushi repeated as he and Kyouka walked past me on my way up. “What’s she talking about?”
But Kyouka shook her head and ushered him along as I hastily bid them goodbye and kept running. One by one, I passed the remaining members of the Agency from the Tanizaki siblings to Kirako, promising not to stay too late and outright lying to the last of the clerks about needing to drop something off when I saw the one with the short hair eyeing me suspiciously as well. By the time I got to the fourth floor, my face felt hotter than the surface of the sun and I was pretty sure I’d go to pieces if one more person asked me why I was returning to the office at closing when everyone else had gone.
I grabbed the doorknob and hesitantly turned it.
Please don’t let me run into Dazai. Please don’t let me run into Dazai...!
But to my relief, the bandaged maniac was nowhere to be found (probably left early when he realized neither I nor Kunikida were around to bother). I’d gingerly opened the door to the main office only to find myself arriving at an empty room.
I’d beaten Kunikida here.
“Oh, thank God,” I breathed, almost collapsing in a heap in the middle of the floor.
I thought for sure with all those stupid delays, I wouldn’t have made it in time. Reassured, I started walking back to my desk and hung up my messenger bag, taking out my folders to be put away. Since I’d come early, I could dust myself off a little, drop things off properly and finish closing things out at my desk—
“Kusunoki.”
For the second time today, I jumped, dropping my pencil case. It split open on top of my desk with a soft “pop,” pencils scattering everywhere. As a few of them rolled off the surface of the table and onto the floor, I whirled around to see a tall figure carrying an olive-green notebook stepping into the room from the inner hallway.
Putting his notebook down, Kunikida nodded at me in greeting.
“Thanks for coming back to meet with me,” he said, smiling apologetically.
He walked forward, into one of the many slats of sunlight from the unshuttered windows. In the soft orange-toned light of the slowly setting sun, his gray-green eyes looked warm and radiant, his skin smooth and bright.
“I know this was hard to arrange and that it’s getting late, so I appreciate your meeting with me today.”
He stopped near my desk and bent down to pick up a runaway pencil.
“I promise I won’t keep you long.”
He dropped the pencil into my hands.
I swallowed. My throat suddenly felt very dry. I wasn’t sure if it was because I’d just run up four flights of stairs and talked to everyone I passed or if it was because tall, blonde Kunikida was now by my side, looking very attentive and so very handsome in the early evening light.
“N-no problem.”
My smile felt awkward and way too wide and my heart was pounding so loud, that I half wondered if Kunikida could hear it as well. But judging by the look on his face, he probably couldn’t, so I tried to clear my throat and speak.
“So, um... what did you want to talk about, Kunikida-san?”
I brushed a stray hair behind my ear just as another pencil fell to the floor behind me. I tried not to wince.
God, why was I always so clumsy and awkward around him?
“Ah, well...”
He trailed off, his polite expression faltering a little. I watched as he reached up, rubbed the back of his neck and quietly looked away. In the light of the setting sun, his cheeks looked a little pink...
Wait a minute.
I quickly looked around.
It was early evening, after hours at the Armed Detective Agency’s main office. Beautiful, orange sunlight softly filtered in through open, unshuttered windows, casting everything in a velvety, romantic glow. Kunikida and I were here, completely alone and the atmosphere was awkward but in a pleasant, exciting sort of way...
I clapped my hand over my mouth to stifle a gasp.
No way.
This was exactly how I pictured my ideal environment for confessing my feelings to Kunikida...! But I hadn’t worked my way up through the ranks yet! I hadn’t even been here an entire two months. It was too early for this...!
My heart was racing. My entire body felt hot and flushed.
What was I going to do?!
“The truth is, I’ve been wanting to talk to you about this for a while now,” Kunikida admitted, dropping his hand. “You’ve come a long way since you started here and I’ve been thinking...”
He glanced down at me, his gray-green eyes contemplative behind his thin rectangular glasses.
I swallowed audibly, my heart beating so rapidly I was about ninety percent sure I was starting to hyperventilate.
“Y-yes, Kunikida-san?”
He studied me for a moment before speaking.
“How do you feel about one-on-one combat training?”
I thought I heard a record scratching somewhere inside my head. My smile suddenly felt stiff.
“...Huh?”
“You know?” Kunikida explained, waving his hand. “Like martial arts?”
I thought I heard someone laughing from outside the window and without meaning to, I flushed.
Looks like it really was too early for a confession...

Atsushi for the character ask please? Thank you~🙏💕
Do you love/hate this character?I have a complicated relationship with Atsushi.
From a writer’s perspective, he’s a good audience-substitute or surrogate. We’re introduced to the world of Bungou Stray Dogs, predominately through his eyes, and that’s a classic trope used in fantasy and stories with supernatural elements. Kind of like in Harry Potter, how we’re introduced to the wizarding world and the rules through his eyes. It’s easier to get the audience up to speed and familiar with certain things when we can follow along with a rookie character and learn as they do. Our introduction to BSD would be so different if we followed Kunikida or Kyouka or Ranpo or Fyodor. Atsushi was chosen as our “gateway” into this supernatural world for a reason. His storyline follows first as a newcomer, and then an apprentice or student, and then when he’s immersed and can progress stably on his own, THAT’S when we can see the world through another’s perspective and learn more about the curious ways and world of BSD. It’s a linear progression, comfortable to follow, gives Atsushi a lot of growth, and so on and so forth. It’s like a traditional hero’s story, from farmer to knight in a sense.
From a personal standpoint, I dropped BSD from my watch list back in 2016 because season 1 was really hard for me to get through and in the nicest way possible, I needed time away from Atsushi. There is some consensus in the fandom that season 1 was rough and that Atsushi’s story in season 1 was...many things could be said about it. For years, I didn’t like Atsushi. There was something about him that I couldn’t put my finger on. I didn’t know if he was annoying, or if the frequent flashbacks to his time in the orphanage were too on the nose and forced sympathy. Now that I’m older, I understand the reason behind why it was done that way, but I think it could’ve been handled better, narratively-speaking. There are ways and there are better ways to express trauma, to express emotional and psychological scars, and I think season 1 of the anime wasn’t sure how it wanted to go about that. It left a bad taste in my mouth, and that taste transferred to me having a negative view on Atsushi’s character. I think he’s a sweet guy; but every time I thought of him, I could only see season 1 and all the things I felt about it.
It wasn’t until 2019, around this time of the year, I got back into BSD. I saw it on my dashboard because my girlfriend at the time was into it, so I decided to pick the show back up and watch it. The difference three years can make. One, I was older. Two, I’ve been through more life and I was in a rough place at the time. A combination of those two things made it easier to swallow season 1 and I could better relate to Atsushi’s struggles and how the anime portrayed his because I was going through a similar thing. Bungou Stray Dogs was the highlight of my 2019 because it was the anime I needed to move on from something in my life and I love the themes in season 1 and into season 2. While Atsushi isn’t my favorite character, I’m not as hard on him now than I used to be.
BSD is one of those shows where you kind of have to be in a certain mindset to watch it, or you have to have gone through something so that you could understand the personal struggles that every character faces. 2016 Joey didn’t know any of that. 2019 Joey did. Watched through season 1, watched through season 2, watched the OVA, watched the movie, waited and watched season 3. Read some light novels on the side. I really do mean it when I say that BSD was the highlight of my 2019. It got me through stuff and I’m glad Atsushi was there to be my friend, walking me through most of it.
To answer your question: I think Atsushi is a relatable character. Not my favorite, but I don’t hate him.
What’s your favorite trait of this character? It’s hard for me to pin something down. When I look at Atsushi, I see my younger-self reflected back at him. I see the person that was confused, hurt, scared, withdrawn, and unsure about himself. At the same time, I see someone with an incredibly compassionate heart, someone who wants to help others and be there for them, and someone who deserves to love and be loved for who they are. I see that. It’s hard for me to point out a trait that I like about Atsushi because it means I have to pick something about myself that I like.
And just writing this and seeing how hesitant I am to actually name something, it speaks a lot about me and it speaks a lot to how I relate to Atsushi because I think he’d struggle too if you asked him this. The closest thing I can answer this question with is that Atsushi feels incredibly human. I’ve probably walked past hundreds of Atsushis in my life because he feels that human. He has qualities, fears, insecurities, and flaws that a lot of us have. His story can be heavy-handed at times, but watching him grow and growing more sure of himself and seeing that he has good friends and is in a good environment has a ripple effect on us. I don’t know where I’m going with this.
What’s your favorite moment/event involving this character?I made a kickass AMV for Atsushi’s fight scene in season 3, so yeah that one.
If you could have one power/attribute/etc. of this character, what would it be?His ability to see the good in others. He may be naive and has a lot to learn, but I admire that he can find the good in others. Okay, his animosity towards Akutgawa is understandable and I find it hilarious. But even I don’t think Akutagawa is an exception.
When did you fall in love/hate with this character?Read the first question on this ask. It basically tells you everything.
Who’s your OTP for this character?I wish for Atsushi good health, a good life, good friends, and wishing him the best as he finds closure and recovery and support from everything he’s been through. That’s what I want for him. If he finds love along the way, I’m happy for him. It’s good to know you’re not doing this alone. May the universe bring Atsushi close to someone that loves him for who he is.

May I get imagines of Atsushi, Chuuya, and Tanizaki who see their s/o use so much of their strength fighting an enemy and then collapse exhausted? Thank you

Only two bullets left before it’s game over. Their bloody fingertips wraps the gun handle while barely gripping it due to the extreme pain running through the nerves of their hands and arms. It was so foolish of them to fall for the enemy’s trap and furthermore, they didn’t listen to Kunikida’s heed. Bombs let off like fireworks here and there while they hide behind a pile of rubble. It was only a matter of time before the enemy finds them almost defenseless with two bullets. They grit their teeth and gather their wits. They try to think of a plan that can help them get out of this dire situation, but nothing good comes up. Suddenly, Atsushi’s image came to their mind.
What would he do in this situation?
While believing in their self after seeing Atsushi’s face in mind, a bolt of courage built inside them and a bright idea came to them. It’s a fifty-fifty gamble, but it’s all they got and there was no other choice. With one bullet, they shot it near a building and soon after, the enemy was tricked into quickly heading over to the adjacent area where the bullet was shot. Okay, now!!! They swiftly stood up, charging right behind the enemy’s back with one last bullet in their gun. Their battlecry ripped through the sky and immediately, they pulled the trigger in the bull’s eye. However, to much of their dismay, the enemy activated their supernatural ability that helped deflected the bullet like a gnat. After their deflection, the enemy quickly followed up with a strong kick to their stomach and they yell in pain while crashing into a broken rubble. They couldn’t bare to withstand any more damage nor staying conscious. Their eyes flutter. The dust in their eyes were blurring their vision and the pain was dragging them into a coma-like state.  Oh no, I can’t... move... I--- As their eyes come to a close, the enemy’s silhouette crept closer and closer.  This is it, huh? This is game over... As soon as they got knocked out of conscious, a familiar ash grey hair came swooping down between the enemy and them. His beastly legs and tiger eyes were glaring at the enemy before him. Atsushi luckily arrived just in time before his significant other was completely finished. His Beast Beneath the Moonlight seemed menacing as ever.  “Sorry I’m late.” Without looking back, Atsushi launched his most powerful attack towards the enemy for the sake of his partner’s redemption. His black claws pummeled through their defense while ultimately defeating the enemy as his ferocious roar signaled victory in hopes of his unconscious companion could somehow hear him.

It was an all-out war between the Port Mafia and Yokohama’s local gangs. Mori Ougai has issued an order for all lower squadrons to maintain the Port Mafia headquarter’s defense. At first, the fight didn’t seem much until the gangsters suddenly became even more violent than before. Much to their surprise, they even had some supernatural ability users to help fight against the Port Mafia. Unfortunately, this wasn’t looking too good for the lower-tiered squadrons. Chuuya’s significant other was in charge of the defense team and so fought for about a good twenty-five minutes. Their stamina was at their limit and anymore than this, they knew that they will be done for. Even though they requested back up, Mori Ougai didn’t respond. Did the Port Mafia Boss just abandoned their members? No, no, it can’t be. All doubts and fears must be shaken off. At this point, they shrug off their worries and resume focusing on shooting the violent gangsters. Although, this is easier said than done.
“Watch out!” About three members were shot beside them and they were gradually getting a little anxious. Although they shouldn’t be pessimistic at a time like this, their emotions were getting the best of them.  I could be next. If I die here then... Right at that moment, one of the gang members readied their shot. The enemy smirked with a sense of victory as he shot a strong bullet aimed at the head. It was this moment where a sudden feeling of defeat washed over them and their body relaxed as they closed their eyes, embracing the inescapable outcome.  I’m going to die--- Perhaps it was fate that their death wasn’t destined to be today when Chuuya came down from the sky with his gravitational ability, quaking the ground floor and all of the gangsters into utter chaos. That gaudy hat was instantly recognizable and in one second, the enemies were taken aback with fear knowing the Port Mafia executive has come down to the rescue.  “You did well. I’ll cover the rest” His reassuring smirk melted all of their worries and anxiety away. They thought that they were going to be shot to death but who knew Chuuya came to save the day. Maybe by sending his best man to the scene, this was Mori’s plan all along hence he didn’t bother to respond the back-up request. Either way, they were saved and in the split second, the enemy’s sniper triggered an attack and one of the bullet shot through their shoulder. The strong impact caused them to recoil and fall into unconsciousness. Chuuya’s eyes widened at the sight of his significant other falling. Although their bullet wound wasn’t something dire and life threatening compared to a head shot or a shot to the vital organ, Chuuya’s emotions took over him while complete rage filled his eyes. All hell broke loose when Chuuya began rampaging while throwing nasty kicks and gravity punches that were literally bone-crushing. Speaking in terms of percentage, let’s just say the enemy suffered 100% casualty--- all caused by Chuuya.
Tanizaki Junichirou

The room was dark, and judging from the barely visible surroundings, it seemed like they were in a abandoned warehouse where there was no light except the city light glowing at a far distance. The ropes were painfully tight and sadly, they were unable to escape especially with their current wounded condition. The middle-aged looking man and his men wore smirks and frowns. Some small-time mafia gang has captured Tanizaki’s significant other in order to leak out valuable information on the Armed Detective Agency. Even though they tried their best to defend their self, their power was no match for the five men however, got to admit, five against one wasn’t fair to begin with.
“Now, tell me everything you know.” They glare at the ringleader and spat at his face. Naturally, he was enraged and soon after, he punched them while two other men kicked multiple times at their stomach. It was painful and absolutely unbearable. To be honest, they were surprised that they were still conscious after so many beatings.  I have to get help somehow... Millions of plans went through their head and unfortunately, nothing seemed to come to mind that was reliable enough for them to escape. The ringleader fixes his tie and ruffled hair before asking one more time.  “Let’s do this again. Tell me everything.” Their body might be broken, but their spirit wasn’t. As a member of the Armed Detective Agency, they can never betray their organization nor give up any of their friends’ information. This was a matter of a life and death situation and if it means death in order to protect the Armed Detective Agency then so be it--- was what they thought. They laughed a little bit before answering the enemy’s leader.  “I will never.” Expectedly, they were beaten again but this time, the men threw some nasty punches that might’ve broke their rib or two. They coughed up blood while shrinking into a ball. This is my limit... I can’t go on anymore... Tanizaki.... An image of their lover came into their mind and seeing Tanizaki’s face made their tears swell. If only they could see him one last time then they would--- “Don’t worry, I’m here now.” A string of green lights flickered and glowed inside the dark room like fireflies. Grunts and scream of yelps were heard and most of the men were defeated to the ground. The ringleader tries to find the bastard who took his men out but to no avail, he couldn’t see the man at all. They knew instantly that Tanizaki’s Light Snow was activated and before they could stay awake any longer, they saw Tanizaki’s back standing in front of them.  “I’m here to save you” The last thing they saw before passing out from exhaustion was Tanizaki’s reassuring smile and warm arms embracing them.
