Hmm. The finnish words for "warrior" and "soldier" are both formed from the word "war" with a different suffixes, warrior with -uri and soldier with -las. Like this:
sota = war soturi = warrior sotilas = soldier
And for fun, I decided to check out what other words have those different suffixes, to kind of put together what nuance differences the suffixes mean. So, for -uri, there are:
vaate = piece of clothing/garment vaatturi = a tailor
leipoa = to bake leipuri = a baker
imeä = to suck imuri = a vacuum cleaner
nahka = leather, skin, or hide nahkuri = a tanner
And for -las, there are:
kokea = to experience, to endure, occasionally "to test" kokelas = candidate, prospect, one who is being put to the test
kuohita = to castrate a male animal Kuohilas = a castrate, eunuch, one that has been castrated
oppia = to learn oppilas = a student, pupil
toipua = to recover toipilas = convalescent, a patient in recovery
Looking at the general trend of both suffixes, the -uri suffix seems to be "one that makes the original word (happen)" type of words, while -las is "one that the original word happens to". So, in conclusion, the difference between a warrior and a soldier is that a warrior is someone who makes war happen, and a soldier is someone whom war happens to.

Käärijä facts you need to know:
He's been perma-banned to Habbo Hotel for stealing people's shit
He has a vocational school qualification for interior design and upholstery (interior design was his dream job for a long time as he used to really like designing rooms in Habbo Hotel with stolen shit)
He's suffered from IBD since 2009, and has had his large intestine removed (he used to be embarrassed about it, but now speaks openly about his experience to spread awareness)
He used to be a scooter kid, proof:
Tumblr media
The name "Käärijä" is a nickname he got from friends for always winning at betting games and getting all the money (kääriä rahaa=wrap up money/collect money, käärijä=wrapper/collector, it really doesn't translate to English that well 😂)
He has naturally blonde hair (and blue eyes)
He used to play hockey until he was 19
He debuted the bowl cut in 2015 and has kept it ever since
He's a huge Rammstein fan, hence the chest tattoo
He's said he'll never make music in English, only Finnish
He has a doppelganger named Häärijä, or Paidaton Kiehuja, who makes appearances during live shows (and somehow he's even shorter than Jere 🥺)
Tumblr media
He had a translator in Liverpool, but didn't end up needing him as he learned the language so quickly and the broken English became a sort of a trademark for him
He lives in a 20m² apartment (and really wants to move out to a bigger one)
Before going green, he always wore a yellow suit to gigs (now still in use by Häärijä)
He used to play drums
He also used to steal Pokémon cards 💀

Oh, what about someone with finnish! reader, pure fluff and gentleness for whichever driver you want ?
(loving from a finnish follower)
Hi, babes!!!! <3 I decided to go with danny, hope you like it!! *mwah* Also I hope I got the words right!! Let me know if I messed it up and I'll adjust!
Finnish Skies | DR3
― Pairing: Daniel Ricciardo x Finnish!reader (sher/her) ― Warnings: tooth-rotting fluff; typos. ―my masterlist | my taglist | patreon guide ― you can support my writing by reblogging, leaving a comment (don’t forget to follow me if you like the piece), or  buying me a coffee
Tumblr media
Your phone played a gentle melody while you read a book. Beside you, Daniel had a guitar on his lap, strumming the chords softly as if trying to come up with a new song, something he had been doing a lot lately. He loved racing, the adrenaline, and the constant travel, but he found peace in slowing down, especially with you beside him. So when his break rolled around and you told him you were visiting your home, he suggested to follow you. It was his idea to rent a cabin close to a lake.
It was also his idea to go to Helsinki. It would be his first time experiencing the city and the festival. He was eager to meet Finland with you. To discover more about your culture besides what you told him.
But right now, you were just bathing in how your country could feel like home even to Danny who was not from there. The green threes, the brown sand, the long and beautiful lakes, and especially, the starry nights. You had been to a lot of places, but none felt like home did. No other sky in the world was close to your Finnish sky.
"Kulta," you called Danny once you finished the chapter you were intended to. You were about to suggest you started on dinner but stopped yourself watching as his fingers stopped, and his face turned to you in a beat. He had a grin on his face, eyes not leaving yours.
"I love it when you call me that," he put his guitar on the coffee table in front of you and crawled close to your spot on the couch. "Olet kultaseni."
He had just called you his sweetheart.
"Where did you learn that?" You lace your arms around his strong neck.
Danny shrugs, dipping his head to capture your lips in a soft kiss, "I told you I was planning on asking you to visit Finland together, I've been taking classes."
You felt your body warm, and your heartbeat skyrocketing. There was something so pure and deep about someone learning your language even though you can already communicate using a different one. There was something magic about wanting to learn about one's culture and to experience life by one side. To know each small detail that makes you who you are, and to love them with all his heart.
"Minä Rakastan Sinua," he whispered, foreheads touching. He watched attentively as your expression changed once again. A bright smile graced your lips, lips which he couldn't help but kiss again.
The three magic words.
Sure he had told you he loved you in English, but it wasn't the same. It's never the same when there's a different way to say it, one you've been hearing since you were a kid. Since a time when you weren't even able to form words.
This is the most special kind of I love you.
"Minä Rakastan Sinua," you whisper back, bathing on how lucky you were for finding a home in him. Even though Finland was your home, Danny was also your home.

You know... As much as I love pjõl and believe it's an excellent piece of fiction, I am entirely unsurprised that it was a massive flop when it was first published. Imagine you're an Estonian guy in 2012 and you go "wow, a fantasy mystery book written by an Estonian author! I gotta give this a read!" And then you pick it up and it's This Mess.
And you go hey wait a sec. What's Vaasa. What's Graad. What's the Pale, why does the narration act like I should know what this is. Why are they speaking Finnish suddenly. What's an Innocence, that seems important why hasn't it been mentioned until now. Wait there are ghosts now? Is this a normal thing in this world? If only this were some kind of interactive experience where I could ask questions and learn about the world alongside the protagonist.
I love the world of Elysium, but it is so massive in its scale and the chain of cause and effect that has led the world to be in the place it's in (both in DE and in pjõl). Disco Elysium is a game chock full of worldbuilding through dialogue, and it still leaves a lot of players confused about aspects of the history and political situation. And that's in a game where you play as a character who knows literally nothing and goes around asking people "hey what the fuck is the Antecentennial Revolution". Imagine your first exposure to Elysium being through this spiralling surreal novel that is so caught up in its own story that it kinda forgets that it has an audience.
Idk, I just think it's easy to forget that the initial target audience for pjõl was not Disco Elysium fans, but just... Regular Estonian readers.

I was wondering if you could romantic headcanons for Chuuya with a S/O who is Finnish but moved to Japan is trying to learn the language/culture? (Sorry if that's too specific) I think it would be rather interesting :)
far off lovers
Tumblr media
synopsis - headcannons for chuuya with a finnish s/o
includes - chuuya
warnings - gn!reader, reader is implied finnish, maybe ooc, fluff, wc - 407
Tumblr media
↪he had probably first met you by pure coincidence. he had stumbled across you struggling to communicate with others while he was simply walking past.
↪normally, he probably would've just walked off but he could tell that you were deeply struggling with any sort of communication due to you being a foreigner. and out of impulse he offered to help.
↪while he knew he the chances of knowing your language was slim but perhaps you knew english, his was limited but enought to communicate. and thankfully you did which allowed him to help you.
↪when you had thanked him afterwards you told him you only recently moved here and knew very very basic japanese. he couldn't help but pry into where you were from originally.
↪at a later date he would run into you again, still struggling with the same issue - he yet again offered help which you took from a now friendly face. however, rather uncharacteristically, he offered you further help by offering to help teach you some japanese.
↪he didn't know why and he only played it off as him helping you to avoid similar situations in the future. and so you soon found yourself receiving lessons at local café's from somebody who was practically a stranger but felt very much like a friend.
↪due to him helping you improve your japanese, you two had grown quite close and so you expressed to him your interest in the culture aswell. something he would note and look into helping you explore aswell, should you wish he joined you.
↪he also became increasingly more curious toward your culture aswell, sometimes asking you about your culture and maybe to teach him a few words in your language - it was only fair in his opinion.
↪your café lessons with chuuya became very much a weekly thing, pretty much whenever he had time off as he found time with you to be relaxing despite the fact that he was teaching you a whole nother language.
↪and so when a festival came up he didn't hesitate to ask if you'd like to go to it with him, telling you it would be a great way to explore more of the cultire - and spend more time with him, he may of developed some feelings but who knows?
↪chuuya wouldn't know why he offered to help you at all but he wouldn't regret it as he regularly enjoys taking you places to experience the culture of japan. except this time your language would've improved significantly.

Sonic to get "several new mobile titles" in the future, according to SEGA management meeting document
Tumblr media
The Sonic the Hedgehog series is expected to receive "several new titles" for mobile platforms, SEGA's parent company confirmed in a management meeting early Wednesday.
Apple and Google were both named as "key players" in the mobile sector for SEGA, as the publisher detailed an encompassing transmedia scheme for the blue blur, which will include licencing and collaborations with other third-party properties.
"Several new" mobile games under development
With an established presence thanks to the likes of free apps like Sonic Dash and Sonic Forces Speed Battle, the franchise looks set to dive in the world of mobile gaming, as part of SEGA's future plans.
Tumblr media
The publisher did not rule out exclusivity clauses with subscription-based mobile gaming services. In recent days, the publisher signed a contract with Apple to produce Sonic Dream Team, and Netflix announced a mobile port of Sonic Mania Plus for their game subscription service.
No word of a specific timeframe for the aforementioned mobile games, currently in development.
Future Sonic mobile games to adopt Rovio's Beacon toolkit
As part of the mobile expansion, the upcoming slate is expected to adopt "Beacon", an internal development and marketing toolkit powered by machine learning, frequently utilized by Rovio, the Finnish studio behind Angry Birds that SEGA acquired over the summer.
The studio described Beacon as a platform to "build games and get games to market, models to profitably grow and monetize the game and live operations tools to maximize our players’ fun."
The toolkit has been criticized in a number of fan-run Angry Birds forums for incentivizing revenue at the expense of gameplay quality.
SEGA did not disclose if the Beacon platform will extend beyond the present suite of HARDlight mobile games.
More details on SEGA's resurrection of classic hits
SEGA also unveiled these new images and descriptions for the five new games announced at The Game Awards, described as a "power surge" to re-electrify their classic hits, like Crazy Taxi and Jet Set Radio.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Crazy Taxi: Innovative & Fresh Style Driving Action! Cheerful feeling of freedom and fusion of nature and city. Peel out the new stage of Crazy City!
Jet Set Radio: "Counter-Culture" - Tokyo Street Open World! Experience the "rebellion" movement that feels free in a suffocating society. Make friends, increase your fans, and create a movement!
Shinobi: Slay the enemies in the silence of the moment. Run through the world of Shinobi, full of monsters and ninja actions. Grab Oberozuki, the legendary sword and slay evil once more. Your clan and the world are counting on you.
Golden Axe: Warriors arise to subdue the demons! Defeat your enemies with a variety of attacks with swords and magic! The legendary story about the battle axe, Golden Axe is about to begin!
Streets of Rage Revolution: Beloved side-scrolling beat 'em up action series! Take control of one of the ex-officers and make the city a place where people no longer have to walk the "Streets of Rage."
The announcement coincided with SEGA's plans to strengthen their flagship video game brands like Persona and Like a Dragon, and to expand with legacy properties.

So I've been politically active since before I was even eligible to vote. I've followed North American politics near religiously since 2014, and I've been a card-carrying member of my country's most prominent left-wing party since before the start of the pandemic. I barely slept at all during the week Ukraine was full-scale invaded, and I've been stressed about it every day for the last two years, given that my grandfather was born there and I've very much wanted to visit someday. And this was all before the horrific debacle of October 7th, and the subsequent atrocities committed against Gaza practically every day since. Lately I've weaned myself off a lot of international news and been more active in local politics because that's where I feel my efforts have been more effective, but...
...the reality is I am tired. I am so fucking tired.
I blacklisted just about everything remotely political when I made this blog because I wanted this space to be my escape from all of that. He is my escape from all of that. A badly needed one, because between the state of the world, the state of my country, the state of my workplace and the state of my personal life, my mental health has been....not very good for most of this decade and last.
I know this is unhealthily cynical, but as someone who had some pretty shitty friends in the past, and continues to have some incredibly shitty family members, including my own father (who, despite having Käärijä levels of charisma and putting on an excellent act in public, has repeatedly hurt me and let me and others down when we needed him most)....I expect famous people I admire to disappoint me. I very much expect famous men I admire to disappoint me. It may be in three days, or in three months, or in three years, or in thirty years, but it will happen at least once, if not multiple times.
Which is why I don’t-and never have-looked up to musicians or any other celebrity for guidance on my political or moral beliefs. It's a surefire way to set yourself up for not only disappointment but feelings of betrayal towards someone who was never "loyal" to you in the first place. And I wish so many people didn't learn that lesson far too late.
I don't like Jere Mikael Pöyhönen because of his insightful commentary on the state of geopolitics. To be extremely blunt, I like him because he's hot and he entertains me, both of which bring me happiness. Once I no longer feel that happiness, I'll move on to other interests, just as I always have. It would be very nice, however, if that day came in thirty years rather than in three. Which is why I felt relief when he expressed his wish to remain politically neutral, even regarding politics in his own country.
That being said....am I disappointed he went to you-know-what? Yes, for reasons both political and non-political. Am I disappointed that he willingly interacted on camera with you-know-who? Yes. In fact there are several things he has done and people he has associated with that I'm not particularly happy about. But in this case do I understand WHY he went and why he interacted with them? Also yes.
I don't believe he had any malicious intent, quite the opposite. His kindness is both his greatest strength and his greatest weakness-he is kind to the point that he foolishly undermines his own credibility. I don't know if there's an equivalent of Hanlon's Razor in Finnish but it goes "never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity".
And.....well. This is a guy who couldn't tell the Ukrainian esc23 representatives from the Greek ones. Who didn't know what the trans flag was until he was personally handed one last year. Who, AFAIK, has never received any sort of higher education (vocational school would still sort of be considered such where I live, but whatever) not that that automatically makes someone "smart" and others "stupid", but it can and often does help with understanding international issues. And based on my overall experience with hockey fans/players (of which he's both)...they typically aren't terminally online debating anything besides individual player and team statistics.
So I'm not shocked that he didn't think about how Just Being Nice on camera with that representative would look to others outside of his own bubble. How that would not have looked particularly "neutral". But he should have, considering this isn't the first time he's had to deal with angry internet mobs coming after him for a relatively minor mistake. Considering his favourite band got into very hot water last year and dealt with the controversy very poorly for too long.
Is it fair that I can block some tags, turn off the tv, and get on with my day, while he has to worry about his image the moment he leaves home? No. But...this is the inevitable downside of the life he wanted. Unlike me, he now has an audience of millions, a not-insignificant number of whom are going to be thinking about this stuff, meaning he needs to as well. And if not, he needs to pay someone to think about it for him. Goodness knows he can afford it now. I can do without all that pyro if it means none of us have another week like this one.

29 for bojere ❤
Apologies for the delay, Anon, but thank you for the prompt and I hope you enjoy it! (It got very long...)
Waking up the morning after their second Helsinki gig was never going to be a fun experience, but having that knowledge didn’t make it any easier. Bojan groaned, resisting the urge to pull the pillow over his head and block out everything until he ran out of time, and reached for his phone. 9 am. OK, so that was something at least – their ferry wasn’t until the early afternoon, so there was still time before he needed to throw everything in his suitcase and leave Finland behind. Leave Jere behind, you mean, a snide little voice needled him in the back of his mind. Bojan dropped his phone back on the bedside table and at least allowed himself to bury his face in the pillow instead. The other side of the bed was empty but judging by the rattling and clanking coming from next door, Jere was in the kitchen. He’s talking to himself – muttering, really – in that way that Bojan’s learned that he does, narrating his own life in rolling Finnish as he goes about his day. Bojan doesn't do well alone – never has, truth be told – and he knows it. It's why his time as a solo artist was so short lived, and why he'd asked Kris to take Martin’s old room when he moved in with his partner. There's just something comforting about having someone else nearby, even when they're in the next room doing their own thing. For a moment, he lets his mind wander; lets himself believe that this is just a normal morning in a normal day, with nowhere they need to be an nothing they need to do. He can follow Jere into the kitchen, waste time trading lazy kisses with no urgency for them to go further, share a leisurely breakfast just the two of them. They can take a stroll together, binge Netflix, order a takeaway, just enjoy all the time they have together doing the most mundane things. The door creaks, snapping him out of it. Of course, none of that can happen – he's got somewhere to be. Sighing, he turns to look round at Jere, who’s shuffling into the room with a mug in each hand. “Bojan, you're awake.” He pulls himself up so he's sitting against the headboard and nods. The sight of Jere swamped in a hockey shirt and sweatpants, hair ruffled and feet bare, is so domestic that it brings a lump to his throat and he doesn't quite trust himself to speak. If Jere notices he says nothing. He passes Bojan one of the mugs, the one patterned with gaudy orange and pink flowers. He’d presented Bojan with it in the autumn, proudly announcing “It is you” before tripping over the word “shagadelic” three times and dissolving into laughter. The fact that he's remembered and kept this eyesore of a mug safe for his return months and an apartment move later – that it wasn't just a one-off joke – makes his throat hurt even more. For a long moment he just focuses on sipping his scalding coffee and Jere does the same. The silence is almost peaceful, almost not loaded. It’s Jere who breaks it. “I tell Joker guys I get you back in one piece.” Bojan remembers – he was there for every one of the increasingly dramatic promises that Jere had made to his bandmates at the end of each night they’d been in Helsinki. It had started simply enough, swearing that he’d make sure Bojan didn’t spend all night out and about at the city’s clubs (accomplished – they’d gone straight back to Jere’s still-new-to-Bojan apartment) and that he’d force him to abide by vocal rest (debatable – it was probably for the best they’d not run into any of Jere’s neighbours so far), but had gradually morphed into a list of all the possible risks Jere would guard him from, from hysterical fans to rampaging moose to – at Jure’s particular insistence – rabid Moomins.
“So, I feed you and bring you back to hotel. All laundry in case this time, yes?”
Bojan nods again, sipping at his coffee. He’d accepted his errant clothes back from Jere at the start of the trip with just as much ceremony as they’d been presented to him and stowed them away safely already. Of course, if one of Jere’s t-shirts had happened to bury itself in there underneath everything else, he wasn’t going to mention it. "And then me and Hӓӓrijӓ bring you all to ferry to make sure you are there OK. Good plan, yes?” He can see from the corner of his vision that Jere is ducking slightly, trying to catch his eye, and has no choice but to look up. It makes it all the worse, just as he’d known it would. He wonders if Jere will look so calm when they say goodbye. Probably not, even in public at the port; definitely not when they say their real goodbye to each other here before stepping out of the front door. He’s got past evidence to go off of, of course, and knows as soon as he lets everything show in his face he won’t be able to stop. So he just doesn’t. “But then I think you have not been to Tallinn before.” Jere carries on, slow and deliberate and too thoughtful. He’s not quite tapping his chin in consideration, but it’s a close call. “Maybe you not know your way around. You don’t find venue, you miss gig, fans angry, end of band. Not good. Bojan is too pretty not to be star.”
Despite everything, Bojan feels the tug of a smile at the corner of his lips. Jere having an absurd tangent for all occasions is nothing new to him – it was one of the first things that had drawn him to him at the pre-parties, even if the earliest ones had mainly been through gestures and miming – but he can’t help but be amused by it each and every time.
Then Jere is suddenly pulling his phone out from his pocket, swiping through it as he reaches out to put his mug on the bedside table. It takes him a moment to find what he’s looking for, but as soon as he lands on it he’s passing the phone to Bojan with a triumphant “So, I book this.” Bojan blinks at the screen, still cradling his coffee in one hand. It’s a ferry ticket. “You’re coming with us to Tallinn?” It’s there in black and white in front of him, but he can’t help his words still coming out as a question. He checks the timing of the email and sees it came through yesterday just before the end of their gig. It’s clearly a spur of the moment decision and Bojan loves him for it. “Yes, yes. I will be guide for you, me and Hӓӓrijӓ. Show you all the best kebab van and kareoke.” His face splits into a full-blown grin as he passes back the phone. “Alika’s going to be happy to see you too.” Jere nods enthusiastically. “Yes, I think maybe we get big cake to celebrate. And I will jump out for surprise!” And suddenly, with their goodbye pushed back – only by a day, just forty eight hours, but forty eight more hours than we had just a moment ago – it’s so easy to dissolve into laughter, to lose themselves in such a ridiculous idea, to just be them. Bojan is a split second away from asking if Jere knows any Estonian bakers who might be willing and able to whip up a giant decoy cake at such short notice when suddenly Jere gets himself under control enough to swipe again through his phone and hold it out. “But then also I book this.” He accepts the phone again, glances down at the screen and promptly freezes. He feels lightheaded all of a sudden, barely able to make out anything past ‘Helsinki-Vantaa’, ‘Ljubljana’, and ‘5 May’. “Jere, what – ” His voice catches in his throat and all he can do is stare at him, wide-eyed. For his part, Jere is deliberately nonchalant, but Bojan can see the tension in his shoulders blaring his nervousness out to the whole world. “I have album to work on, but only one gig. I check with the guys and they say you have time then. But is just me, not Hӓӓrijӓ, so maybe they are disappointed.” “I can’t believe it – I – ” He shakes his head. There’s too much to say to be able to wrangle it into a sentence or two. “I want this to work. I want that we know when we will see each other, not just...” Jere seems to run out of words, resorting to scrunching up his face and gesturing vaguely, but Bojan knows what he means. “And you come here now three times. I do not make it to London – ” “That’s not your fault, you were busy.” The words may be true and well-worn by now through all the times he’s repeated them to himself and others, but they still weigh heavily in Bojan’s mouth as he swallows down the lingering disappointment he can see reflected in Jere’s face. “But still, I do not come. I do not want you to think I don’t care. I want I see you in your home and be part of your life.” He hesitates slightly, then continues, quieter and less certain, “If... if that is OK.” “OK?” Bojan can’t believe those are actual words that have just left the other man’s mouth. “Jere, that’s... I... yes, I want that too. I just can’t believe it.” Jere’s phone slips from Bojan’s hand as he starts forward, hands cupping Jere’s face and reeling him in for a kiss that tastes of sleep and coffee and him all at once. It ends up not being one kiss so much as several, pressed in quick succession against Jere’s mouth as he sighs and relaxes into Bojan, combing his hair back and trailing down his neck. “I promise this is not the only time.” he murmurs against Bojan’s lips when they part for a second, foreheads pressed together. Their next kiss is deeper, starting slower than the others though it doesn’t stay that way for long as Bojan pulls Jere down again to the mattress with him. Their coffee grows cold on the bedside table, but neither of them notice.

Gender and ethnicity are surprisingly similar in a way. Everybody knows what a woman is or has a rough idea of who is an arab, but the closer you look, the more clear it is that there are no exact definitions, no way to draw the line of who "counts" as what. People know who they are, and people who aren't exactly sure what to define themselves as still know themselves better than any outsider could. People who ask questions like "well what's stopping me from just identifying as black?" really don't understand what it means to identify oneself as something. It's not about what you want to be, but what you know you are.
First and foremost, I am a white man, and I make jokes about overconfidently sharing every single opinion that pops into my head, as a white man is prone to do. I do shit that finnish men do, think and react in ways that aren't exclusive to either men nor finns, but which overlap enough to be typical and characteristic of someone of my age, gender and ethnic background.
I don't know whether people who had been severed from their ancestors' background could be said to experience ethnic euphoria from getting to do things that affirm their identity, learning their own peoples' native language as an adult or engaging in traditions that they had previously been barred from. Maybe they do, maybe there is the same kind of an affirming joy in I am Romani, I am doing the things Romani people do as there is in I am a woman, I am doing the things women do.
Being finnish and getting to finnish things is a comfort I've never needed to question - the right to be finnish, speak the language and do as we please hasn't been threatened or prohibited in my lifetime. But it's just as much a part of me as being a man, and I remember how thrilling it was to be regarded as male and participating in the culture I grew up within in the role and place that men do. I could not stop being finnish any more than I could stop being a man - and trying to sever someone from any part of their identity is mutilation, an act of violence.
Somewhere out there, right now, there's someone who isn't just feeling joy of getting to be a man, or of getting to be french, but the abstract but distinct enjoyment of being a frenchman.
