A grumpy man and his feral son

The grumpy old man being Tsu’tey.

And the feral son being Spider.

Okay hear me out, Tsu’tey surviving the Battle for the Tree of Souls and somehow finds himself as the caretaker for Spider. It’s a very lengthy progress considering he hates Sky People and he’s injured etc. But he has a soft spot for kids, and clearly this one isn’t getting the care he deserves.

One thing leads to another, and he’s looking after a baby Sky Person.

It was probably toddler Spider taking one look at this scowling, blue giant, who had accompanied Jake on a visit to Hell's Gate, and immediately clocked him as a good choice in parental figure. Just toddler Spider rising shakily to his feet - the scientists were shook, he's never shown any interest in walking before - and he clumsily toddles over to Tsu’tey who is stood off to the side. The hunter watches the child with obvious suspicion, eyes narrowed. Undeterred Spider, raises his hands above his head and makes grabby hands. “UPPIES PLS.”

Tsu’tey stares him down for several heartbeats. Unmoving as Spider gets progressively more annoyed at not getting picked up. He's small and demanding and Tsu’tey is weak.

To everyone's shock he caves on the spot. And with a simple huff, he drops to his knees and dutifully scooping the toddler up. Spider giggles happily, grasping at his necklace and holding on tight as Tsu’tey supports his head.

Norm is frozen in place for several moments. Staring owlishly at this enormous being holding Spider with such care and ease. The kid is grinning brightly, content to play with the braids hanging by Tsu’tey's cheek, who doesn't seem to care. Besides a few irritated flicks of his ear when the braids knock into it, the hunter remains focused on the task at hand.

It quickly becomes a common sight around the compound.

Naturally, because Spider is too small for an exo pack, he has to remain within Hell's Gate. Whenever Jake goes to visit the scientists, they begin expecting Tsu’tey to follow suit. And whilst Jake will spend his time with Norm or Max, Spider will inevitably find Tsu’tey and wordlessly coax the hunter into playing with him or getting into mischief. Despite his cold exterior, Tsu’tey is like putty in that boy's fingers. The minute Spider giggled at him, all bright eyes and the cute scrunch of his odd nose, the hunter immediately fell in love. An instinct within was ignited and he found himself drawn to the child.

Side note: Spider being a terror, even from such a small age. Constantly bored so he keeps getting into the machiney or trying to escape outside. At first, Tsu’tey is fooled by the cute smile and demands for cuddles and believes he is a easy to deal with as Neteyam. And then he catches Spider trying to crawl into an air vent. The toddler stares at him. Tsu'tey stares at the toddler.

"No." Tsu'tey says in his heavily accented English.

They continue to stare at one another for another heartbeat.

Then in an explosion of movement, Spider begins furiously stuffing himself into the vent, to which Tsu’tey launches himself across the hall to drag him out by his armpits.

If the space was big enough, like clockwork, Spider would attempt to crawl into it.

There was another time he walked past the glass door of the airlock and by chance glanced down. His eyes bugged at the sight of Spider straining to reach the handle for the external door. He wore no mask, and was blissfully unaware of the immediate danger that waited on the other side of that door.

Tsu’tey had never felt such fear before. Or at least, not since he fell from the sky.

Luckily, he ripped open the glass door before Spider could open the external door, which the air lock automatically locked, and was hauling Spider out. Unaware of his almost death, Spider was more than happy by this turn of events and happily clung to Tsu'tey's necklace as the hunter strode away from the airlock. He refused to let go of the child for the rest of his visit, needing to feel him to reassure himself that he was fine.

In short, Tsu’tey hadn't realised just how difficult of a toddler Spider was to keep track of. Luckily, the kid was so enamoured with Tsu’tey that the hunter didn't have that difficult of a time keeping track of him, since he always wanted to study Tsu’tey's hands or hold onto the end of his tail for balance.

Alternatively: Tsu’tey and Spider fucking around in Hell's Gate. When the little shit begins walking more confidently, he takes to making a runner, shrieking with laughter as Tsu'tey follows him. Of course, the hunter is too tall to catch him efficiently, so he has to duck around all the lights or crawl to keep up.

When Spider gets big enough to wear an exo pack, Tsu’tey definitely starts taking him out of the compound to explore. (He definitely gets his hands on an Omaticayan baby sling and wears Spider around the village so everyone gets accustomed to seeing the little toddler in the exo pack). The child is completely safe with Tsu’tey who is adament on protecting him as he explores the forest.

Tsu’tey teaches this kid everything he knows, everything Spider will ever need to survive Pandora. How to hunt. How to navigate. They figure out how Spider can ride pa’li without a kuru.

He tries to be a good parental figure, dad; strict but fair. Which he admits, gets harder as Spider grows. The kid noticeably starts withdrawing from him. Where once he naturally gravitated towards Tsu’tey in a crowd, he now hung back or chose instead to spend time with the Sully kids. Tsu’tey dismissed it as Spider growing from a boy into a man. He no longer needed such close guidance, and Tsu’tey trusted him to come to him if he needed it.

Bonus angst potential: Spider feeling insecure of his Sky Person body and feeling unworthy of being called Tsu'tey's son. Allow it to fester and give him some drive towards his reckless behaviour.

As a single parent, Spider knows Tsu'tey can’t give him everything a traditional family, but the hunter tries his hardest. Spider sees all his effort. He even thinks of Tsu'tey as his dad although he would never dare voice it. And yet, he still feels disconnected from the rest of the clan. He’s a Sky Person, he can’t form Tsaheylu, naturally he’s gonna feel some distance despite Tsu’tey’s best efforts.

Tsu’tey definitely bullied a throat comm out of Norm and the scientists after Jake explained how helpful the little devices were over long distances. He bestows the little necklace to Spider and wears the pair, instructing his charge to use it if he needs it.

When he was five, Spider used it constantly to narrate to Tsu’tey what he's doing with his day. Telling him all about the funny plants he's seen whilst exploring with the Sully kids, gossiping about a fight that he just witnessed amongst the young hunters. Snitching on Lo'ak who just fell out of a tree.

And Tsu’tey reveled in it. Allowing his boy's excited voice to narrate in the back of his mind as he carries out his daily chores.

As Spider grew older however, he stopped using the coms as much. And when the humans return, he strictly uses it for emergencies.

Therefore, Tsu’tey immediately knows something is up when Spider randomly starts talking over the comms, thanking him for everything. Apologising and telling him that he won't be able to make dinner.

Then Jake calls in and tells him about Quaritch.

Tsu’tey is on his ikran and speeding for the old compound faster than toruk could move at its top speed. He is livid.

Tries to keep the panic out of his voice as he steadily tells Spider that he's coming. Naturally, Quaritch is unsuccessful in obtaining any of the kids. And Tsu’tey wouldn’t let ANYTHING happen to his boy.

Like Spider gets YEETED off of that branch by an explosion and Quaritch stumbles upon him wounded and barely conscious. The colonel neals down to scoop the kid up onto for Tsu’tey to appear through the bushes and brutally whack him upside the head with his bow; stunning him.

Being the petty man he is, Tsu’tey wouldn’t deliver one hit and flee. He’d swing again and again, snarling and spitting insults as the Colonel scrambles to find his bearings. The pissed off hunter deals as much damage as he can and quite literally herding the recom away from his son. Only Lyle opening fire on him gets him to back off, and with a hiss he scoops up Spider and disappears into the foliage.

Spider's pov with Quaritch looming over him and Tsu'tey's shiny forehead and scowling face peering through the bushes over the recoms shoulder:

Basically, I just want to see Tsu’tey panicking about the scrapes on Spider’s skin, the handcuffs, the very real reality that if he had been even a second later, then Quaritch would’ve hoisted the kid onto his shoulder and taken him.

Man is bordering on a manic episode as he stops long enough to ensure all the Sullys made it out before he’s calling for his ikran and high tailing it back to High Camp where Mo’at can fix Spider up.

Meanwhile, Spider is shook. He has never seen Tsu’tey so dishevelled. The hunter is always calm, always in control. But he's frantic. Tail thrashing to and fro like a whip as Mo'at fussed over Spider.

All the tension of the event boils down to some raised tempers and high emotions. Tsu'tey is a nervous mess, and Spider is so unnerved by the blatant show of terror in his father figures face that he can't help but feel guilty. Definitely tries to get Tsu’tey to leave so he'll stop hovering and looking at him like that.

Meanwhile:

Tsu’tey: trying to convey to his boy how much he means to him because he hates how Spider is always yeeting himself into danger for the sake of others, and his crusty old heart could not take the grief of losing him.

Spider: Just stop pretending! You’re not even my real, Dad!

Tsu’tey: floored! He buffers. He stops breathing. He just stares at Spider like he’s grown a second head as the words sink in. Then he visibly crumbles. Real, actual tears streaming down this man’s face. He feels like a failure. How did he overlook this? Why didn’t he notice? Did Spider just call him DAD??

Spider: *with an expression of genuine fear* You can CRY??

Once Tsu’tey starts, he can’t stop fucking crying and has to excuse himself whilst Spider is left feeling conflicted and guilty. He didn’t know Tsu’tey possessed tear ducts. Whenever he was upset, he was either disappointed and scowling, or pissed and committing attempted murder; there is no in between.

And as a result, Tsu'tey starts acting weirdly towards Spider. He sees how good Neytiri is with her children, how the other fathers easily get on with their sons, ensuring they’re seen, heard and kept safe. (He ignores whatever the hell Jake is doing because WTF). And he tries to parent differently.

And naturally because it’s incredibly out of character for him, Tsu’tey takes it way to far and becomes incredibly overbaring.

Spider literally has to sit him down and go: I know you care, but STOP all of this. You’re scaring the shit out of me.

And then Tsu’tey is stuck. His tail thrashes in unease because he’s tried his way and miserably failed. And then he observed everyone else and he’s still fucking this up.

And it becomes a learning curve for them where they actually communicate and establish boundaries and talk about feelings. It goes surprisingly well.

When Spider's insecurities finally surface after a failed raid, where he almost got Tsu'tey killed:

Tsu'tey trying to reassure his boy who is clearly distraught and hating on himself. ”I see yo-”

Spider immediately cutting him off because he doesn't deserve to hear that right now. ”But you DON’T see me. Hell you don’t even like me.” Spider yelled. He doesn't mean it. He's just spitting words. Scrambling for something to say that will hurt Tsu'tey enough to make him back off. ”You see a Sky Person and nothing else. You see the son of the man who destroyed Home Tree. You see a threat you can mould into an ally. You don’t fucking see me. You see an opportunity. Potential. You see what you want to see.”

Tsu'tey is not having it. He goes real quiet, and kneels down in front of Spider who is trying to hide in his hands. He takes Spider by the wrists and forces him to look him in the eye. His gaze is steady, voice firm and even as he reassures his boy.

<”I. See. You.”> Tsu’tey repeats. He squeezes Spider's hands, wordlessly begging him to understand. <”I see you, Spider. My son.”>

Spider:

just finished my first run of bg3. spoilers for basically everything, although i don't actually go into too much detail abt the actual climax, more the ending cutscenes and companion quests.

i love jergal so much. that just needs to stand on its own. he's such a sassy skeleton git who hides the fact he still cares for humanity under it all - his scene with arabella was one of my favourite moments of the entire game.

(on that note, anyone else assuming his whole "follow the weave" thing to her is him basically protecting her? finding her in act 3 surrounded by four dead adults while she has a nary a scratch certainly makes me think she's got some secret godly supervision going on).

anyway - the ending.

i think that if i hadn't been warned that there aren't any epilogue slides, i would've been disappointed. so i'm glad i knew that, even it still felt a bit abrupt because of it. but hey! given larian's history with expanded/definitive editions, i'm guessing we'll either get it in a patch several months from now or in bg3's expanded edition.

personally, i think the section from when you enter the morphic pool to when you kill the netherbrain feels very rough and abrupt. very rough. but the rest of the game is just so stupidly perfect as far as i'm concerned, with like one exception for the cut content for karlach. which is blatantly obvious even without looking at datamining, because why else would we get a ton of different types of infernal metal in act 3?

and god i would've loved to see the upper city (as advertised, larian!) and the ducal palace before it all went to shit. cazador's palace was clearly meant to be there, and i was really looking forward to my urchin tav (malias) actually walking around the upper city and having opinions.

(on that note, i loved that bust gortash has in his office [which was presumably meant to be in the ducal office but anyway!] where the founder of the counting house was an ex-urchin who didn't give a shit abt the patriars because they never cared for him before he became important. malias absolutely would've found that an inspiration for any upper city shenanigans)

but those ending cutscenes on the pier? pretty great, even if i was internally screeching the whole time gale was talking because hey astarion is right there in the sunlight and he doesn't have a tadpole. but thank god gale was just like "yeah, you're right, leaving it there is probably a good idea".

and his line abt some things being more important than power! i adore that line. it's essentially the point of everyone's quests, that power imprisons you and the most important thing in life is the freedom to choose. and of course gale is the one to verbalise that, and to openly say how fond he is of everyone!

then gale made his slightly dickish comment about astarion fleeing, lol. boys, please.

honestly that felt hilariously fitting to my playthrough where i accidentally fell into romancing gale while intentionally romancing astarion, and broke it off with gale (despite never actually being with him). yes buddy, i know you're still a bit salty about that. please wait until malias isn't distraught over their boyfriend literally burning up and running off in front of them.

(to detour for a moment - again, thank you larian for letting me play a nonbinary characters. honestly, that alone makes it a game in its own sphere of perfection, especially since vtmb 2 originally promised that then cut it then maybe it's back in with the new studio??? genuinely perked up with happiness whenever someone used the right pronouns or referred to malias in a clearly gender neutral way.)

even if astarion fleeing and his lines about it were genuinely agonising. at least the romanced cutscene with him started immediately afterwards - i was kinda debating between the "heroes" and "sunlight" options, but honestly? as absurdly good-aligned as malias is, i absolutely think they'd value helping astarion to have the freedom to walk in the sun over being heroes. pretty sure this whole adventure has shown they're pretty good at that multi-tasking element lol. and i love that astarion is so happy about going on another adventure.

like not to go tmi, but astarion's character and plot was... painfully relatable, especially when he just started sobbing after killing cazador, and it's just so good that you can give him a happy future. not an ending, of course, because i don't doubt he and malias will get into a fuckton of mischief, but like he says - he's free! it's just such a perfect moment. my favourite companion and companion quest by an absolute country mile.

i'm also just internally assuming that malias sprinted off after astarion as soon as karlach's near death brush was finished - i am so glad i went the "have my cake and eat it" route of breaking wyll's pact and saving his dad regardless. it lets wyll and malias/tav persuade karlach to return, swearing that she'll be safe from zariel, and personally malias would absolutely be looking for a way to help karlach return safely while off finding a way for astarion to walk in the sunlight.

(also i'm a bit curious abt what others think - there's a little bit of ambiguity abt whether it's just going for the sunlight, or straight up curing his vampiric nature. after all, as his grave inscription happily points out, he was turned 194 years ago and the true resurrection time limit is 200 years. since gale wants to stick around, he can call in a favour with elminster to figure out a way to do that.)

and to backtrack for a second, i am happy that malias persuaded lae'zel to make her own path instead of following orpheus' orders! was it selfish? probably, yeah, which was a bit surprising from how otherwise strongly good-aligned malias is but between that and the mindflayer choice after freeing orpheus (i asked orpheus to do that), i just... think malias doesn't want to lose that.

to explain smth for a sec, i'm going back and forth on whether to keep malias' backstory as is (urchin/orphan who grew up in the lower city) or to make them my dark urge character. from what i've heard of the dark urge, it really ties into my favourite character dynamics and themes (and seems a bit reminiscent of kotor lol), so it's a little bit of debate.

but either way, i think malias would override any moral concerns of goodness for "fuck that, this is my family and i am not losing them". regardless of which backstory i end up picking, that's definitely staying the same. but malias as a former orphan and street kid sure as fuck isn't giving up on their new and beloved family. so yeah, i think the moral concerns of "ok you were just told to go save the githyanki as a whole" would be pushed to the side of "you've always been following orders your entire life, i want you to be free".

and if lae'zel chooses to go help the gith regardless? that's great. but malias would want it to be her choice, not orders she feels obligated to follow.

i also love that you get to say "yes, let's go to the pub to celebrate!". even if we don't see it on-screen, i just love it. those fuckers (astarion included once someone managed to throw something thick enough over him so he didn't burn en route) absolutely partied until they crashed and they fucking deserved it. i love my found family shit so much. and i'm guessing that probably ties into the cut epilogue stuff, even if that was meant to be six months later.

but yeah. i just fucking love it all. now time to do my dark urge run, which i heavily suspect will also be an astarion romance again just bc i'm curious how those differences pan out.

With 23.5 finally coming out, the people are rejoicing at finally getting a high profile gl from GMMTV. But there have already been several gls airing this year, including my fav TsukuTabe, that have been flying under the radar with fandom, and in general there are more gls already out there than folks seem to think. I just know you have a list of all the gls we should be watching, please share with the class!

It may seem like I'm out here hating on GL because i've made a couple of negative reviews of recently airing series recently (Love Senior and Chaser Game W in case you're curious) but I actually have lots of GL that I love and that I wish were better known! Thanks for sending this ask so I am inspired to actually finish it! I've limited myself to series so that I could keep the list and this post to a reasonable length. Where possible I've listed where you can find each of these and included a link. And I've included an 'elevator pitch' summary but I am NOT in marketing for a reason, so please don't roast me too hard for my terrible comparisons. Alright, enough waffling!

Twig's GL Rec List

She Loves to Cook and She Loves to Eat S1 & 2 (Japan, 2022 & 2024, both seasons fansubbed by @furritsubs; if you need help accessing this show feel free to DM me!)

Elevator pitch: Our Dining Table with lesbians and an even slower burn. Watch for beautiful food, acespec rep, mental health and therapy rep

What might turn some off: Extremely low heat, and quite slow-moving; warning for a disordered eating and family trauma plot (v gently handled)

Let's start with the one you've already mentioned. This is a heartwarming slice-of-life slow burn in which an autismspec-coded woman who likes to eat is invited by her neighbour, a femme acespec woman who loves to cook, to come and eat her food. It starts from a very practical place (when you love making food you need someone to help eat it), but their relationship grows as they spend more time together. The story follows them as they both move towards self-actualization in several ways: as a lesbian, as asexual, at work, with their families, with their friends, with each other. This show is so careful to say the important words aloud. And there is so much delicious cooking! Each episode highlights a particular recipe, and the food porn is real. Do not watch while hungry, but definitely watch. The found famiy vibes in this one one are also immaculate.

She Makes My Heart Flutter (Korea, 2022, YouTube)

Elevator pitch: Younger lesbian friend group tries to help out (slightly) older lesbian bar owner with mixed success. I can't think of a good BL equivalent, The Moment Since feels the closest with its similar bartender/patron romance

What might turn some off: Comedic tone; short runtime; struggles with being closeted

This is a gem of a miniseries about a bar owner and an interior designer who smoulder at one another while an intrepid group of younger bar regulars (including the bar owner's neice) meddle. This series is really cute, solid, and full of sapphics! Once again found family vibes are immaculate (you may sense a theme in my faves). Run don't walk.

Fragrance of the First Flower (Taiwan, 2021, GagaOOLala)

Elevator pitch: Right-person-wrong-time/second chance romance; tonally is a little like We Best Love 2: Fighting Mr. 2nd but with an ambiguous ending.

What might turn you off: Medium heat, second chance romance means they break up once, internalized homophobia, adultery/cheating, at one point there's a creepy dude, child with autism (depicted well), ambiguous ending

At its core this is a story of a woman who can't stop getting in the way of her own happiness. This series is a little more sad than the rest of this rec list but I couldn't not include it because this relationship is so poignant. Plus there's a s2 that supposedly is to come out in 2024 so maybe we'll get our happy ending after all?

Love Greater Than or Equal to 70 Degrees C (Korea, 2019, YouTube)

Elevator pitch: Ingredients but with lesbians staring at one another over beautiful tea pairings! What more could you ask for?

What might turn you off: Low heat; short runtime; ambiguous ending; like Ingredients this is essentially a long ad for the café it's filmed at.

This is a Korean miniseries about passionate tea sommeliers making really fancy tea while staring at one another a LOT. Perfect sapphic representation, 10/10 no notes. This one packs a lot of the drama tropes into its short runtime, so even though it's short it's full of butterfly-inspiring moments.

Sleep With Me (Philippines, 2022, GagaOOLala/iWantTFC/Netflix w/VPN set to Philippines)

Elevator pitch: The Truth About Cats and Dogs but the self esteem issues are handled without catfishing. BL equivalent: Hmmm. Closest I can think of is Gaya Sa Pelikula.

What might turn you off: There's some ableism (treated as such) in this show; Open ending.

Elevator Pitch: Along the lines of I Cannot Reach You; the show gives both perspectives and they are held back by queer angst.

What might turn you off: No kiss (but they make it very clear both want to kiss), internalized homophobia

Really sweet miniseries about having a crush and being afraid of being hurt so you don't actually make a move. I really like the way the girl who has not dated a girl before defaults to gender roles and it throws the more experienced lesbian lol I also really like the way this show makes clear that both of them are waiting for a kiss, and that if you get in your head about things, it can get in the way of your own happiness!

Pearl Next Door (Philippines, 2020, Youtube)

Elevator Pitch: Gameboys but with lesbian vloggers.

What might turn you off: Love triangle, lots of teasing but low heat in the end, a lot of (good) conversations about mental health issues, ambiguous ending

This is the GL spinoff to Gameboys, starring Pearl from Gameboys. Pearl ends up being fought over by the two gorgeous women in the gif, an old love and a new. I love the queer friendships in this story as much as the relationships. I will say it's an open ending (that felt a bit like the showrunners didn't want to decide between ships) and definitely the love triangle features prominently but even in the face of these aspects that would normally turn me off a series I had a good time. The characters and interpersonal conflicts feel very real, and are allowed to be complex even when the show tone is comedic.

Dear Uranus (Taiwan, 2021, YouTube)

Elevator Pitch: Schoolgirl ensemble GL; a little like My School President but without the singing.

What might turn you off: Short runtime; ambiguous ending; a little bit of bullying; very standard romance trope execution

The first Taiwanese GL miniseries, this series was produced by a Taiwanese lesbian couple (Rabbit & Wolf)! Lots of excellent drama tropes, and incredibly gorgeous women (I think the entire watching audience fell in love with Erol.

Lily Fever (Korea, 2015, YouTube)

Elevator pitch: Complete crack; YYY but with more kissing and frankly an even less coherent story.

What might turn you off: The lack of coherent plot; less a romance and more a very thirsty lesbian kissing everyone she can

This miniseries is utter chaos. Nothing really makes sense, it's all just random excuses to cause very suggestive moments (and kissing) to happen. I love so much how this series depicts women being so absolutely thirsty for one another (and yes that date isn't a typo, this series is ~9 years old). Not an "happy ever after" ending but it really isn't that kind of story.

Chasing Sunsets (Philippines, 2020, YouTube)

Elevator pitch: Ocean Likes Me with lesbians. Resort romance with a mental health twist.

What might turn you off: Some of the mental health stuff gets intense, this was filmed in 2020 so the pandemic features heavily; hopeful but slightly ambiguous ending.

A complex story from the Philippines covering mental health and finding yourself. A woman shows up to a resort and befriends one of the women running the resort. They get closer as they spend time together, and the resort owner realizes something is off. There's also a BL side couple in this series.

Show Me Love (Thai, 2023, YouTube)

Elevator pitch: A little like My Day the series with lesbians, in that they work together and fall in love and it's full of tropes

What might turn you off: The advertising for the Miss Grand competition, there is some bullying and cheating (though way less than I was expecting tbh), not a lot actually happens, the editing gets a bit wonky at the end

This is essentially a massive ad for the Miss Grand Thailand competition; this GL was produced by the same company that produces that competition, and the stars are mostly Miss Grand competitors. The main pairing were shipped in the actual competition, and the company decided to make a GL about them. It's very slow paced and low-stakes, and there are better kisses than I expected considering everything I just said about where this show came from. There are a lot of cute moments!

Girlfriend Project (Korea, 2022, YouTube)

Elevator Pitch: Love Class with lesbians

What might turn you off: One of the leads is kind of mean in that pgitail-pulling way? It ends abruptly (but happily)

This is a short miniseries about two girls paired in a class that are assigned to "date". The chemistry is chemistrying. And there is a kiss (a good kiss, and a tiptoes kiss at that!). This show also has one of my favourite tropes, in which someone who seems like a pushover stands up for themselves and their partner finds it very attractive. For the record, in this show they are watching another GL by the same company, Love Tech.

Lulu (Philippines, 2022, Vivamax/grey)

Elevator Pitch: Present Perfect with lesbians (but with a better ending).

What might turn you off: Depictions of panic attacks, brief depiction of drowning, pandemic lockdowns, illness, exes, waffling, happy but open ending (which I actually liked for this story)

Two women trying to move on from the garbage in their lives meet at the beach of a B&B (where one saves the other from drowning) and become one another's company during their escape and then something more. They both have baggage that seems determined to keep them apart even as they continue to be drawn together. In the end, they decide to stick it out and see where they end up, with no guarantee of happily ever after, which I found very sweet. Requires either a VivaMax account or searching the grey for it, but it's worth the effort (check MyDramaList comments for suggestions on where to find it). Plus one of the leads has a cactus as a pet.

Welcome to the Lesbian Bar (Korea, 2023, YouTube)

Elevator Pitch: A little like Fudanshi Bartender but without the fudanshi bartender and all of the bar patrons are lesbians lol

What might turn you off: Short, can get a little bit preachy, abrupt ending

Cute short series with different very stories every episode as different patrons visit the bar. The stories range from women who have been together for awhile, to people meeting from an online app for the first time, to someone visiting a lesbian bar for the first time; and yet the story all weaves together in a way that's satisfying though ends abruptly. Includes some solid marriage equality propaganda.

GAP the Series (Thai, 2022, YouTube)

Elevator Pitch: Kind of the vibes of Together with Me but lesbians and in an office instead of school. Angry boss falls for charming new intern and

What might turn you off: This one is the highest heat of all these recs; homophobia especially amongst family, brief depictions of death by car, brief mentions of suicide, cheating, bullying, abuse of power in the office.

A list would not be complete without this one! Honestly the plot is a bit wobbly but the show is a lot of fun. The girls are very cute, the feelings and tension builds really well between them, the friend group is excellent, and in the special we get a wedding.

The rest of these have caveats of one kind or another, but i couldn't leave them off a rec list, so here are the side couples and censored stories that are still worth your time anyway (I might do a separate more detailed post for these, as well as for films, one day if there's interest):

Nevertheless (GL side; Korean, 2021, Netflix) Not sure it's worth watching a whole kdrama for side lesbians? Search soljiwan on youtube. They are great. Even the Netflix account stans them. I watched this (ngl, I watched the SolJiwan cut) as it aired and was constantly braced for it to let us down but it did not! A really good friends-to-lovers story.

Friend Zone 2: Dangerous Area (GL side; Thailand, 2019, YouTube): These sapphics are messy and I love them. Decent conversation about dating someone with mental health issues in this series, and they're one of the only couples in this ensemble to get a happy ending. If you're just watching the lesbian couple (which you can, their story is pretty self-contained) you don't need to have seen s1.

Six Survivors (GL side; Japan, 2022, Viki) This show is a horror comedy and it is SO MUCH FUN. Warning for zombies and blood, but way less than you might think. One of the eponymous 6 survivors is a lesbian who keeps trying to convert them to veganism lol. If you watched Chaser Game W you'll recognize one of the actresses in this, the lead actress is from Kamisama no Ekohiiki, and one of the guys is from the prequel series His as well as I Want to See Only You! And yes there is a kiss. Also a surprising number of Mallrats references. Not for people who can't handle gore or relationships being complicated/not a "true love" story/ambiguous ending.

Kamisama no Ekohiiki (complicated question of is it GL in parts, Japan, 2021, furritsubs once again coming through to save the day) This one is a bit complex because there's bodyswap, but the girl who falls for the bodyswapped boy-in-a-girl's-body is clear that she is only interested in the girl. One of the better bodyswap stories because the bodyswap is not a secret for very long, so instead there's a lot of introspection about what gender means and who/what they are attracted to. Feels wrong to call this GL, necessarily, but it's very queer.

Couple of Mirrors (Censored GL, China, 2021, Viki) Story of a rich girl and her assassin girlfriend. This production did an amazing job getting away with what they could, just don't watch the last five minutes and we've got essentially a happy lesbian family.

Legend of Yunze (Censored GL, China, 2021, @douqi7s) Very cute very low budget xianxia miniseries with two seasons and a special. The special is set in modern times in a future lifetime so if you want a cute censored-but-clearly-a-soulmate-love-story this is the one for you. Don't be thrown off by the weird cuts/abrupt episode endings, that's in line with cdramas in general.

Led Astray by Love (Censored GL, China, 2021, @douqi7s) A very fun and adorable isekai story in which a modern day girl is transported to a wuxia novel setting and has to figure out how to get home, and gets romanced by the princess along the way.

This really good GL MyDramaList list (not made by me!) lists what seems to be everything I've mentioned and about 200 more. Even I haven't seen a few of these!

My YouTube playlist of sapphic content: This includes anything I stumble across or find in my searches, a lot of music videos and random shorts as well as some microseries and miniseries that I don't consider GL but are WLW/sapphic in addition to true "GL" content. For serialized content, I add just the first ep. A complete mess, but you can trawl through to find stuff to watch, like Hetero!

SOONOTSUE: The same producers of She Makes My Heart Flutter have other short series on their channel worth checking out; if you liked that one, try Out of Breath!

Shakeshoulder: Thai YouTube producers of very pulpy (read: low budget and dramatic plots) shorts

FuFuKnows: This YouTube channel is owned by a gay Taiwanese couple that produces shorts every week, including some with GL mains and sides. These are very low budget but cover a whole swath of queer themes.

@douqi7s is a godsend providing subtitles for all kinds of content, including sapphic shorts and more series than I've listed here. Check their tumblr for links to all of their content; A Practical Guide to Being a Superstar's Assistant has one of the best setups to giving us great moments in the guise of something else so that they get past censorship I've ever seen; I also recommend The Vampires if you're into genre fiction, as well as Legend of Yunqian if you enjoyed the xianxia parts of Legend of Yunze. @wlwcatalogue did an excellent summary of many of the non-wuxia options here.

Quick pitch for the streaming platform GagaOOLala; it's affordable, has a ton of content, including a whack of GLs (originals, license series, and a ton of shorts), and is run by queer people out of Taiwan who care about good quality queer content being made and having an audience, and using the soft power from those successful series to support social change. And if you can't afford a subscription it's worth checking out what they have for free, they open up temporary free access to some things for various events throughout the year.

*wipes sweat off brow* that should be enough to be getting on with, but it's really just the tip of the iceberg! • A few years ago, while he and Jay had been scavenging the wasteland for valuables, Jay came across a strange device and didn’t know what it was, so he asked his dad to come take a look.

• Finn recognized it as a record player, explaining that they had one in his old family home before it got destroyed, and that it’s used to play music.

• Growing even more interested in the contraption, Jay begged him not to sell it and instead take it home, and after enough pleading he finally said yes.

• The two brought it back and placed it on the kitchen table, the other kids gathering around in awe as they had never seen anything like it before.

• Tressa thought that it wasn’t very useful, but was nonetheless happy to see the kids so excited.

• After trading Choose Bruce for a box of old records, there were a few nights where they would put one on and Tressa and the kids would dance along to the music. They tried to get Finn to join them, but he refused to budge from his seat on the couch, seeing such a pass time as too silly for him.

• It wasn’t until Tressa took his hands and pulled him along with her that he finally got up, shuffling around awkwardly while she took the lead and she showed him the steps. Finally, a small smile graced his features as he looked at his family with joy.

• But it was soon after that his wife died, and thus the record player was shoved in a storage box and forgotten, as it was only one more reminder of what he had lost.

• Fast forward to after you two get together, you’re doing some spring cleaning and sorting through boxes in the attic when you stumble across the old record player.

• You wipe the dust off the top, surprised that the pragmatic Finn would even have something like this.

• After finishing in the attic, you take it downstairs and put it in the living room, asking Finn where it came from.

• He scoffs, saying that Jay had found it a long time ago and they barely ever used it. He promptly tells you to just throw it away, saying, “It’s just a piece of junk, no use in keeping it.”

• You frown at his words, it must have been important to him if he decided to keep it all these years. So instead you decide to set up a little surprise.

• That night, after tucking the kids into bed, Finn comes down the stairs only to be met with the sound of a soft piano melody crackling through the air.

• He enters the room to see that you’ve put on your nicest outfit, styling your hair in a way that frames your features, making you somehow look even more beautiful.

• He asks what you’re doing, and you reply that you wanted to spend a little one-on-one time with him, as a thank you for working so hard to support everyone. He stays frozen in place, unsure of what to do for the first time in a while.

• He can’t help keeping his eyes on you as you approach him, taking his hands in yours, and he involuntarily flinches away from your touch.

• You immediately look concerned, saying that you don’t have to if he isn’t comfortable with it. Finn apologizes, reassuring you that’s it’s not your fault, it’s just…been a long time for him. He’s doesn’t know if he remembers the steps, and he’s afraid he might step on your toes if he tried, or worse.

• You smile at him, saying that it’s okay if he doesn’t remember. You can make up your own dance together.

• With that he nods, taking your hands once again and you lead him to the center of the room. He lets you guide his hands to rest on your hips, and you place yours on his shoulders.

• You stay like this for awhile, swaying back and forth to the music. Right now, it’s just you and him, together in your own little world.

• You lay your head on his chest, breathing in his natural scent as he holds you in his arms. Finn sighs and rests his head on top of yours, finally able to relax and just be.

• He knows that no matter what happens, you’ll always have each other, and that’s good enough for him.

Little bonus!

•While the two of you are wrapped up in each other’s embrace, Jay shushes his younger siblings as they all watch from the stairs, still in their PJs.

Bonnie perks up and asks, “Does this mean we’re getting a new mom?”

Jay smiles, looking at how happy his dad looks for the first time in years, and replies, “I sure hope so.”

Sitting around a large table in Rossi's backyard with the BAU family is exactly where she wants to be for her first meal being married to the love of her life. It's peaceful, personal and nice to see all of her husband's colleagues relaxed for once.

Spencer's as perfect as the day they met, hair parted down the middle and held in place with gel rather than curls messy on top of his head. A thing that's never changed is how in awe of her he is, speechless whenever he looks at her for too long and constantly wondering how he'd ended up with everything he ever wanted sitting next to him.

"You doing okay, handsome?" She whispers, touching his shoulder as she leans over.

He's literally never been better. "Yeah, of course."

"No regret yet?" She jokes.

Spencer grins widely, shaking his head. "Never."

Before they can continue having their moment of intimacy, Emily draws their attention away from each other. "So I've got to know, how did Spencer actually manage to get with someone as hot as you?" She's definitely had a few too many, judging by her slurred speech and bluntness, but the team can't deny they're all thinking it. "No offense, Spence. She is way out of your league, though."

He scoffs playfully. "Thanks." He knows it's true, too, no one has the warm glow and gorgeousness that she has, but he's more than reassured that she's only in love with him.

"Tell us the story." Penelope insists also.

Y/n frowns. "I'm not sure there's much to tell." She admits. It had been one of the best days of her life, of course, but it was also probably the most ordinary day she'd ever had in her time knowing Spencer Reid.

"There's got to be something." JJ tries to nudge her to spill because none of them can imagine how it happened.

"Well, it was at a bar." Y/n starts, immediately stopped by the confused looks on everyone else's faces. "What?"

"Spencer at a bar? Without one of us dragging him there?" Morgan asks incredulously.

Spencer laughs, jumping in to explain that night from his perspective. "You did drag me there." Spencer points out. "You just left early... Jasmine, I think her name was?"

Everyone laughs at that, knowing Morgan's tendencies to be a ladies' man. "Spencer was, I don't know, suave, charming, smooth." She's looking for the right word, but each one doesn't seem impressive enough to describe him.

He's looking at her with puppy dog eyes, totally love-sick. "And handsome." He adds.

"The most handsome." She amends, but when she turns to see the team's reaction, she's shocked by how shocked they look.

"Did you just use the word suave to describe Spencer, or did I imagine that?" Penelope asks, her mouth lingering open. None of them can imagine it. Sure, he's endearing with his awkwardness, but he's terrible with women he's attracted to, to the point of aversion.

They also don't imagine her standards were low, not when she's so immaculate, which makes it even more puzzling that Spencer managed to land her.

Y/n nods. "Yeah." She answers. "He totally charmed me. Honestly, I worried he was a playboy, but I don't think I had any reason to worry."

"You definitely did not." Morgan agrees passionately before he can help himself. "I saw him flirt with a girl in a bar once, he sucked." He exposes Spencer.

"What?" Y/n asks, tipping her head to the side to look at her husband. "What happened to I never do this?" She presses him, voice dropping lower to mimic his from that night.

He holds up his hands defensively. "Technically, I was only successful once."

"When you divorce," Emily interrupts the playful retort Y/n's about to make. "Can I take you out, Y/n?"

Spencer giggles with Y/n at that, and the whole team joins in on the laughter when Morgan jumps in with his offer. "Nuh-uh, if she were going to date anyone else here, it would be me."

While they argue, she rests her head on Spencer's shoulder and whispers that she loves him and his smile only grows bigger.

From the young age of seven years old y/n Norris had always had a crush on the older verstappen boy. Even if she didn’t understand what love truly was at that age it was just something about him that drew her in. Y/n knew that the young Verstappen boy was suffering from the tight grip his father had on him, she saw it every time she came with her brother Lando to his Karting races she saw how Max’s father would take out his anger on everyone around him it didn’t matter who it was. When you asked your Father about Max's dad and why he was being mean to him your father told you that some people like Max weren’t always born into a loving family and that they were born into one full of sadness and hate.

You had watched as Max took the opportunity to get away from his father. You followed him into the alleyway and tapped him on the back. Max turned around and looked down at you. Little seven years old you felt your heart speed up and your hands started to sweat. You took a deep breath, handed Max a Spiderman sticker, and walked off. What seven-year-old you didn’t see was how Max smiled and stuck the sticker on the inside of his helmet.

A year later you entered your first carting competition where you placed 2nd against a bunch of boys who were 1-2 years older than yourself. You were walking back to your father and brother when you ran into Max, he congratulated you on your second-place win before running off to his father. You turned red in the face at the compliment.

Now you're 20 years old and driving for Williams Racing. Wearing your black pants and blue Williams shirt you went and did your introduction video for the fans.

You sat down in the chair next to Alex who was going to be asking the questions.

Y/n— hello everyone I’m Y/n Norris and I’m the second-seat driver for Williams racing

Alex— perfect ok let’s start with who's your favorite F1 driver and why?

Y/n— easy, that's Kimi Raikkonen, and why you ask because he doesn’t expect me to talk about my day. We could sit in a room and not talk about anything. It's a comfortable silence which I like.

Alex— I saw that coming you have a blanket with his face on it. OK next question, what is your favorite racetrack?

Y/n—Zandvoort circuit. The overall vibes of the people are just immaculate. It's all good vibes, everyone's so nice and welcoming.

Alex— interesting and not to mention you and your brother can eat your weight in stroopwafels

Alex— last question: what is your goal for this season?

“Alright, do you wanna get suited up and meet us at the garage for a test drive?” Alex asked.

“Hell yeah give me 10 minutes,” you say rushing off to your driver's room to change into your fireproofs.

Walking out of your driver's room dressed in your blue Williams racing suit you pulled your balaclava on and then pulled on your helmet. Once you were ready you climbed into the car and the mechanics

Started buckling you in. Getting the green light you pulled out of the garage and onto the track.

Engineer— how does it feel kid?

Y/n— amazing

Engineer— how does the car feel?

Y/n— driving smoothly

Engineer— All right give it a couple of laps and come back to the garage.

Y/n— copy that

You went around the track a few times before having to pull back into the garage, turn off the car, and climb out. You see Lando who has a big smile on his face.

“That was amazing y/n,” your brother said, hugging you.

“Thank you, Lando”

“You’re welcome oh I’m throwing a party for you tonight so I just wanted you to let me know so you can mentally prepare yourself for tonight”

“Oh ok thank you for telling me who's all going to be there?”

“Some of the guys from the grid and their girlfriends that’s all”

“Oh so not that many people”

“Yep I figured that I’d let you know beforehand anyway I need to get back to McClaren I’ll see you tonight,” your brother said hugging you before running off.

You walked off to your driver's room to change out of your fireproofs before meeting with your engineer and mechanics to make some adjustments to the car.

John— OK kid tell me what you think of any adjustment we need to make.

Y/n— yeah, it kinda of felt like the DRS flap was sticking a little, it was lagging a bit. Other than that the cat felt fine.

John— Right I’ll check it out and your PR manager needs you. I think she said you have one more interview to do before you're done for the day.

Y/n— alright I’ll see you tomorrow thank you for telling me I better get going before Shelly loses her mind.

You ran out of the garage to your motorhome where you knew that Shelly, your PR manager was waiting for you. Looking down at your phone texting Shelly you were on your way when you bumped into someone causing you to fall but you never felt the ground thanks to the hand gripping your arm.

“Are you okay?” Looking up you see Max and his teammate Checo looking down trying to hide your blush, You look back at the two.

“Yeah, I’m okay I’m just late meeting my PR manager and I’m late for my last interview for the day,” you told them.

“Well I’m glad you're okay,” Max said, letting go of your arm.

“Thank you for not letting me bust my face open but I need to get going,” you said, running off not hearing as Checo teased Max about his crush.

Finally meeting with your PR manager she told you that you still had an interview left with Jenson Button which was easy to talk to because he respected you and believed that you have what it takes to be the first female to win a world championship with F1 one day.

Jenson- there she is I was begging to wonder if you forgot about me.

Y/n- no I could never forget you Jenson

Jenson- I was just talking about your impressive test drive you just finished and I have to say that was pretty incredible driving especially for someone who is as young as you are.

Y/n— thank you Jenson I learned from watching the best.

Jenson— that would be me right?

Y/n— I was going to say Kimi Raikkonen but whatever you need to tell yourself to help you sleep better at night be my guest.

Jenson— you’ve got to stop hanging out with Kimi. You're starting to sound like him.

Y/n— he’s my favorite for a reason.

Jenson— are you excited for your first F1 race?

Y/n— yes I’m excited, kinda nervous about it though.

Jenson—that’s normal, ask anyone who had their first race and they’ll tell you that they too were nervous to ask Kimi the next time you see him.

Y/n— I’ll keep that in mind.

Jenson— so tell me how did the car feel?

Y/n— the cat felt great. We had pretty good pace, but the drs was a bit sticky and there was a bit of a drag so my head mechanic is fixing that now as we speak.

Jenson— alright sounds like things are going great there for Williams at the moment to try win for me kid i got a lot of money on you.

Y/n— did you bet on me?

Jenson— yes

Y/n— unbelievable

You say walking away shaking your head.

Later that night…

Lando’s party was kicking off. All the guys were coming up to congratulate you for joining F1. Most of them were excited to race against you. You just laughed and said that it would be great to kick their asses which they found funny but they all knew you had the talent to do so.

Daniel Landos ex-teammate walked into the apartment giving you a bear hug and ruffling your fair was happy to see you.

After a while you found yourself talking to Lily and dancing with her. The two of you have been growing closer together since you became teammates with Alex.

“You like him don’t you?” Lily asked, already knowing the answer.

“What who are you talking about”

“Max you like Max”

“I don’t like Max”

“Sure you were staring pretty hard at him I think you were begging to drool”

“You crazy and you were seeing things and even if I did like Max my Lando would freak out”

“Lando doesn’t have to know”

You knew she was right about everything you were staring at Max and Lando didn’t have to know. You were practically 20 years old.

“Except me Lily but do you mind if I steal y/n for a few?” Max asked.

Lily looked back at you smiling “Sure Max I need to find Alex anyways” she said walking away.

“Hi Max”

“Hello, y/n so how are you feeling about your first race coming up?”

“I’m not gonna lie I’m nervous”

“Yeah that’s normal I was 17 when I entered my first race”

“You know Jenson said that was normal for everyone”

“He’s not wrong. Would you like to step outside for a minute?”

“Yes Max would like to step outside for some fresh air”

You walked outside to the balcony with Max behind you. Sighing as you leaned against the railing looking out at the ocean breathing in the salty crisp cool air. Out of the corner of your eye, you saw Max staring at you with a small smile on his face.

“What are you looking at?” You asked, smiling at him.

“I’m not going to lie, Mooi meisje, I'm looking at you,” Max said, staring at you.

Beautiful girl if you remember correctly that’s what he said looking back out at the ocean trying to fight the feeling in Your gut you smile losing the internal battle.

“Thank you, Max,” you say as you sit down on the couch on the balcony.

“You welcome,” Max said, sitting down beside you.

You were starting to get cold but you didn’t want to go inside yet because you were having fun talking to Ma. Max noticed you shivering. He gave you his jacket which was warm and smelled like him. The two of you continued to talk about the little things when you were interrupted by Max getting a text which made him from a little. Not long after Max got the text your brother ripped open the back sliding glass door stepping outside with Daniel following behind him.

“What’s going on out here?” Lando asked, visibly annoyed.

“Lando relax we were just talking”

“Yeah well Max I think it’s time for you to leave now”

“Lando come on don’t be like that,” you said. He always did this; it didn't matter who it was when it came to guys talking to you. You hated how protective he was over you.

“No no no y/n it’s okay I gotta call it a night anyway I have an early meeting tomorrow anyways I’ll see you tomorrow,” Max said walking away with Daniel following him.

“What is your problem Lando”

“He’s six years older than you y/n that’s my problem”

“I’m not a child anymore god I can’t do anything without you freaking out!” You yelled at him.

“No, but I’m your older brother and I don’t want you to get hurt”

“I can’t get hurt if you never let me do anything,” you said walking past Lando to your room.

Laying down in your bed you remember you never gave Max back his jacket getting out of bed you texted him.

Y/n— hey I’m sorry about Lando

Max— it’s OK I’m like that with my sister sometimes

Y/n— you forgot your jacket

Max— keep it

Looking at that message you felt butterflies erupt in your stomach realizing that Lily was right and that Lando didn’t have to know a thing…

Okay I'm gonna elaborate on my "Charlos as Romeo and Juliet" take, I just couldn't shut up, I'm sorry akansksj

Don't expect anything deep from this long rant because it's just going to be a bunch of personal opinions on f1 ships and friendships, family-like dynamics (i'm a sucker for the family found trope ngl) and such, all badly taped together lol

SO the grid is more or less divided into two sides: the Hamilton-Vettel side and the Alonso side (I'm considering the current only, plus Mick, Seb and Danny).

The Hamilton-Vettel family: grid dads Lewis and Seb are disgustingly in love and happily married and Charles is obviously their child™, alongside Mick and George (I don't see him as their kid as much as the other two, but he's not that far, so). Other people included in this family are definitely Alex (Georgie's boyfriend and Charles's friend), Pierre (Charles's bff and Lewis's friend) and Lance (Seb's former teammate and pseudo grid kid and one of Mick's bffs). I know that Lance being here and not on the other side of the barricade could disappoint some people because of the 'good relationship' he seems to have built with Fernando (I saw your Strollonso propaganda and porn), BUT c'mon!! He's Mick's friend! He was definitely indoctrinated by Seb! He said his idol growing up was Michael (which might have single-handedly got him adopted by Seb lmao)! No way he's leaning towards Nando.

The Alonso family (single dad power!) is basically him and his kids: Max (he has clearly chosen him as his successor in f1), Lando (he loves him and Max and Carlos love him too, so) and obviously Carlos (we know all Spanish athletes are probably in a sort of cult, spanish solidarity is very strong, they have known each other since Carlos was a child thanks to Sainz Senior blablabla).

That being said, we are all aware of the not-so-simple relationship between Seb and Fernando and Lewis and Fernando and their whole decade-long history. This obviously causes some big trouble when Charlos fall in love and begin dating. Seb and Lewis do approve of their son-in-law (there are a lot of pictures of them interacting and they seem to get along pretty well - an example is the Barcelona gp and the whole chili bucket hat drama lmao), if Fernando wasn't there Carlos could easily slip into their family and be pseudo adopted even without marrying into the family (Carlos as Sewis's kid could make sense) BUT Fernando. is. there. and Sewis don't really approve of him, and viceversa - i'd say that he likes Charles, so the problem is always the same: their respective son's in-laws (I'd add that Carlos Sainz Sr is the one who doesn't like Charles very much, he probably sees him as a threat). Moreover I think that things between Lewis and Max might still be sort of tense, same goes for Georgie and Max, and other similar conflicts, so Christmas dinners with the in-laws won't probably be very pleasant in general (the risk of them easily turning into crime scenes is very high - there are knifes around). SO all of this means that Charles and Carlos are a bit like Romeo and Juliet!! They come from two different families which are more or less in conflict with each other (and the conflict can only increase as the championship goes on, especially with Fernando currently doing well and Ferrari being utterly shit, because the gap is getting increasingly bigger) but their love managed to blossom in the middle ground. Obviously it's not that dramatic, the two sides don't hate each other that much: it's not hate per se, it's more... some dislike? Complicated feelings for sure! I know that some drivers are friends with the enemy family (es. The Twitch Quartet), but it's all for the sake of the narrative lol Anyway the vibes are there!! And they're immaculate!! I haven't imagined how a proper and more elaborate Romeo&Juliet AU could work (yet), but the foundation would be more or less this. Something that would be interesting to reflect on is how the dynamics would change if the championship results were different (es. Ferrari were competitive), between everybody and especially between our Romeo and Juliet, but I'm digressing now

Bonus: what about the rest of the grid? Val obviously prefers the Hamilton-Vettel side, Checo would be on Fernando's side (Spanish speaker solidariety and all that, but his 'allegiance' is not that strong, I suppose he doesn't care that much, he's like a distant uncle), Oscar is actually Mark Webber's kid (and!! that's a story for another day, because!! Mark... and... Seb... and Mark and Fernando!! We all know things happened. But let's not dwell on that rn, it would be too complicated) so he'd better stay out of the conflict and Logan, being useless his friend, would probably follow him, so. I imagine Kmag and Hulk would more or less stay neutral (they've got their personal sUcK mY bAlLs MaTe beef going on so lol) and so would Nyck? Tbh I didn't give them much thought because someone like Yuki is much more interesting in this setting, since he is Pierre's bf but Fernando has taken a liking to him and kinda made him one of his grid kids, so he is in a peculiar position. But let's be real, Yuki doesn't give many fucks, so he is probably going to waltz from on side of the paddock to the other without a care in the world. Estie is interesting too: while he is Mick's other bff, he also has a love-hate relationship with Fernando. I believe that he is on the other side, still I don't trust him and Nando together lmao. I'm actually not sure about Zhou, he would probably be quite neutral, but I know he admires Fernando a lot (I admit I'm fumbling a little bit in the dark here lol but it's okay, I hadn't actually thought about every single driver, some of them I'm making up as I type).

The real wild card is Danny Ric, because he has known Lewis and Seb for years (underrated trio!!) and obviously likes George and Pierre and more or less their whole family BUT. Alonso has Max on his side. And Lando. So Danny's probably like the friendly neighborhood dog: he loves everybody and he gets fed like four times a day because everybody loves him and he doesn't really pick a side.

TsukuTabe S2 Is Perfection

I’ve been waffling about what to write about Tsukuritai Onna to Tabetai Onna s2, which completed last week (and which we have access to at all thanks to the hard work of @furritsubs). I have had to just give up on getting across how much this show means to me; there's no way I'll be able to communicate these feelings with words. Season 1 was excellent but Season 2 was everything I wanted and more that I didn't know I needed. This is going to be more disjointed than usual because I don't know how to be coherent about this show (and because tumblr ate my first two attempts).

At its core, Tsukuritai Onna to Tabtetai Onna asks what if we were all just a little bit more conscientious and kind to one another? What if women were given space to be themselves and to make the choices that were best for them? This is the world of TsukuTabe, and I'm so grateful to have had the chance to inhabit it over these last four weeks.

I have so much love for the way Nomoto and Kasuga develop their relationship in conjunction with their relationships with the other women in their lives. Nagumo, Sayama, and Yako are integral to the success of Nomoto and Kasuga’s relationship, and they're also important relationships for the happiness of Nomoto and Kasuga in their own right. The found family vibes are immaculate.

The conflict between Kasuga and Nomoto this season was so perfectly them; the way they struggled with the transition from friends to lovers and being two people who are kind and giving in a relationship together and how that requires honesty and trust were both familiar conflicts that hit me hard in the feels.

Kasuga's conflict with her family also hit me really hard. I once did the wrong thing and showed up to support my family in caring for someone who abused me, and it was a horrible experience that was ruinous to my mental health and took years to get over (and in the end they had to find a different solution anyway, which they could have done in the first place). Watching Kasuga refuse to make a similar decision, standing strong in the face of the social pressures of her parents and her aunt was so healing for me. And then to have her decision affirmed by someone of her parent's age? I sobbed in those scenes.

I also loved the way this season handled Nagumo’s anxiety issues and how she was given space to decide to get professional help on her own time and terms. The way her parents tried to help was also very familiar to me and realistic, and it was just a little heartbreaking how they tried and didn't understand how their attempts at helping added pressure in a way that wasn't helpful.

The way this show covers this important beats in a person's life through these small, everyday moments, and in such a gentle way, is what I love so much about it. The show itself makes a safe space so that these subjects can come up and not feel overwhelming.

And it's also really important to me that all of the characters get to have these moments. Sakae not only reflects on her insensitivity and the unfairness of Japan not having marriage equality, but she also reflects on the pressures on her to marry and whether she actually wants that for herself. Fujita not only helps Kasuga gain proxy acceptance for her choices but gets the same back for herself around her decision to divorce. All of these women live in ways that invoke social stigma, and the way this show gives explicit permission to these women to live their best lives is both cathartic and critical.

I can't end this disjointed ramble without talking about the character I most identified with this season, Yako. Yako is an older, self-actualized asexual lesbian who makes friends with Nomoto on the Internet, recommends lesbian films to her, and mostly listens and affirms as Nomoto goes through her own process of discovering herself. I ran a GSA and have been on the Internet a long time, I've been in Yako’s position a lot (though I can only aspire to be as kind and wise). She is so patient and so genuinely happy for Nomoto when she and Kasuga get together, and she seems so quietly thrilled to have more wonderful people in her life willing to indulge her random party ideas. Her sharing a connection to a LGBTQ+-friendly real estate agency while being angry on their behalf that she even has to was perfection.

It's so important that these characters say the things they say aloud. I want to inscribe every sentence of this show into everyone's brains. This show is perfect, and lovely, and a warm bath, and a hug, and a cup of your favourite warm beverage perfectly fixed to your liking all in one. If you haven't done yourself the favour of watching yet, I highly recommend that you do so immediately.
