it is so funny in retrospect how much character development alphinaud gets in heavensward. It's like a laser focus 'on GOD we're gonna make you stop being such an insufferable prick' like okay! alphinaud is my best friend now I guess

Incubus Chapter 1.5
Tumblr media
(A small glimpse into Flea's POV sometime between Chapter 1 and 2. For mature readers only.)
A few nights after that unsettling encounter with the self-styled ‘demon hunter’ and Flea was doing a damn good job pretending it hadn’t happened. Hell, maybe it had been just a candy flip hallucination—if he kept the drug cocktails flowing then that was all it ever had to be.
A slender, manicured hand slipping up the inseam of his thigh brought him back into the moment; back into the back of this taxi carrying him off into the night. Another hand, masculine and calloused from some kind of manual work, claimed the other thigh and both worked their ways upward. This was more like it. This was nice and uncomplicated.
He’d hardly had to work for this one. This couple had hunted him, descending on him with drinks and compliments and the offer of a place as their third for the night before the clock even struck twelve. And they were obsessed with each other; with themselves, leaning over either side of him to make out sloppily and moan into each other’s mouths.
Flea was barely more than a prop in their little debauched play—but as long as he got fed, that didn’t matter. When they finally got him back to their place, it’d probably be an easy night. Just get naked, look vulnerable, and go pliant. They struck him as the types—the boring, vanilla types who got off on pretending to be predatory and powerful. Suited him just fine.
He just hoped they didn’t kick him out as soon as they were finished. The taxi was taking him far away from Pink Street and the part of the city he knew, and it’d be one less hassle if he knew where he was spending the night. Besides, his nails were looking kind of jacked. He’d like the chance to rifle through this woman’s vanity; top himself up with a new coat of paint.
As his zipper was slid down and two very different hands slithered into his pants, Flea caught the taxi driver’s eye in the rearview mirror and enjoyed the disgruntled, appalled, turned-on-but-annoyed-about-it look on his moustached face. Yeah, this was more like it. It had just been an off night, that night. He was doing fine. He doubted he’d be seeing that hunter again.
Until Chapter 2...

#I know that line bothered me too bc it was so specifically said before that she'll have something good for you upon your return #and it was a really dangerous mission #and then it's like “oh yeah sorry I forgot about you”
There was that bit in ARR where you return from a quest, the scions had prepared a feast for you but then ate it all before you could arrive, right? I cant for the life of me remember WHEN/which quest that happened in and I'd appreciate your help in reminding me.
I can no longer find part of it either; it seems Garland Tools has cleared out a lot of incidental/side dialogue, nor did the FFXIV Game Script seem to capture it.
I know there was a "WoL's mindset in ARR patches" post recently mentioning it in a reblog comment, and I do think the analysis has merit with the lore backing mentioned, but to call it a "prepared feast the Scions ate without WoL" or that "everyone else was more important" (as the reblog addition puts it) is honestly, I feel, a gross overstatement of what happens in optional dialogue between quests.
In very old screenshots, as WoL returns to the Rising Stones, I found a line where F'lhaminn apologizes to WoL as she thought she made enough food for everyone, but everyone else coming in from their own adventures and assignments were also really hungry.
Tumblr media
There's the dialogue with Nanamo praying just before this in the screenshot log, so I want to say it's right after "Let Us Cling Together" when Eline Roaille escaped and then had to be recaptured in a solo instance, while the other Scions are investigating the ways to make white auracite work to defeat the Ascians. WoL hasn't even been in Mor Dhona for a bit (a day or several, depending how one decides to run one's timelines and teleporting travel), but in Thanalan dealing with Roaille's escape.
So it's really just a case of the folks in the kitchen not having enough meals readily on hand, and F'lhaminn kinda feels bad about it as 1) it's her entire self-determined job and 2) IIRC, she did mention something about having a meal ready for WoL when they got home, but by the time the quest is over, it's clear she underestimated.
Also, after the quest shifts to the next one ("Good Intentions"), talking to Tataru has her say this:
Tumblr media
So it's not that the Scions are being intentional jerks to the WoL--it was entirely an aside in optional click dialogue, and mostly an honest mistake (and perhaps meant to be a bit comedic, but falls somewhat flat) of kitchen staff underestimating their adventurer colleagues' appetites and not preparing enough.

i like that ‘why did criston support aegon?’ and ‘why did bittersteel not support daemon blackfyre ii?’ are both posed as historical mysteries nobody knows the answer to when it’s extremely clear the answers are ‘criston fucking hated women’ and ‘bittersteel fucking hated gay people’. if bittersteel wasnt racist and criston didn’t believe in the inherent wickedness of bastards they’d be like this 🤞 in hell

thinking about that moment late Shadowbringers where Y'shtola expresses that she kind of wishes she too had been granted the gift of the Echo, that she might be able to peer into the WoL's heart, and juxtaposing it with this other moment before one of the dungeons that she's looking forward to being able to drop the air of absolute self-control that she's presented to the Night's Blessed and really cut loose and unleash her powers for a change, and it's like... both of these are more or less incidental dialogue, stray almost throwaway lines, and yet...
For as much as she found a place amongst the Night's Blessed, and for how content and comfortable she was with them, she still never really let them see who she is under the surface. She never felt so comfortable as to drop her tightly controlled presentation, to let the mask drop and show her heart in full. For as much as she identifies with, and misses them, she still never let them truly know her - not the way that Y'mhitra, or the real Master Matoya, or even the WoL does.
It makes me wonder if part of what she's wishing she had isn't necessarily so much the Echo itself as it is the ability to share her heart openly, to be able to just drop all the carefully constructed walls for a spell and bare her innermost thoughts and feelings without fear of being dismissed or judged for it.

I killed the rat king of New York and inherited his throne by right of conquest or whatever, but I never took the rat oaths so I can speak to and command rats and they are compelled to obey, but they formally elected a rat president last year. I don't have any formal power in their social hierarchy but I have very real concrete magical power over them. I guess the title gets passed to my eldest son unless a rat kills me at some point.

A strange alien doctor stands near the unconscious body of Padme Amidala. “It appears she has lost the will to live.” A older man with a limp hobbles closer with the aid of a cane. “That’s the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard,” says Dr. Gregory House.
