#the final disc confrontation
Text
So, I rewatched the disc finale for an AU with one of my besties and noticed something.
So, Dream would not come down the elevator. So, Tommy threatened to kill himself if Dream didn’t come down.
Then, a few seconds pass. The elevator was not coming down and Dream was nowhere to be seen.
So, Tommy goes to step on the elevator platform to make a new deal.
But as he turned to everyone and checked his items (before he could say the new deal), there’s a certain someone you can see above his item menu.
Tumblr media
This bastard.
Tumblr media
This motherfucking green bastard.
It’s blurry but his skin is recognizable. It’s him.
Dream was already there before Tommy could say his new deal about telling him something he never told him.
That means that this bitch ran to the portal after Tommy said that he would kill himself if he didn’t go down.
He ran just to make sure that Tommy didn’t kill himself even though he knew that Tommy was going to try and kill him again.
I am SCREAMINGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG!

I miss the Dream SMP so I remade the entire disc confrontation/staged disc finale area in Minecraft.
Tumblr media
Available for download here! (Java only)
The world was generated in version 1.16 snapshot 20w17a, which is the version the DSMP was originally started in. The bunker/vault area is built in the exact same location as the original (checked with VODs), at coordinates -240, 80, 3305. The elevator is actually functional too! The world is compatible with Minecraft Java version 1.20+.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Some notes and more info below the cut:
Install instructions: unzip the file and put the folder in the saves location, default is C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Roaming\.minecraft\saves
Notes:
I built and changed only the disc finale area! This area includes the mountain, the bunker, and a tiny part of the Nether. The rest of the world is completely untouched, but I did generate it from spawn in 1.16 so the landscape should look familiar.
You can go through the Nether portal and it should put you in the right location but I didn't build anything else in the Nether.
This world works only with Java! You're free to convert it to Bedrock but the elevator won't work in Bedrock, so keep that in mind.
You need to press the button upstairs to make the elevator go down, and the button downstairs to make it go up. You can't press the button upstairs to make the elevator go up, and you can't press it downstairs to make it go down.
The world is compatible with version 1.20+ but I did replace the deepslate in the bunker with the original bedrock, so it should look the same as in the actual finale.
When you first start the world, it should put you right in front of the elevator entrance. If you get lost or stuck at spawn, the coordinates to the disc finale area are -240, 80, 3305.

i just feel that if you didn't see one of the most well laid twists coming and then decided that the creators of the characters are Wrong Actually then you probably shouldn't be writing that character.

i think in both regards to story, and in terms of meta/real life
doomsday and the destruction of l’manberg killed the server.
whether people were for or against or apart of l’manberg or not, it was a gathering point that brought people together to talk. it was a place people would hang out. it was a place with lots of chests to steal food and supplies from. in new l’manberg so so many people spent their time their even if they were completely unaffiliated or lived somewhere else.
storywise when it was destroyed, the story just lost a central characteristic for conflict, and a very important thing. l’manberg wasn’t just a place. it was ideals it was imagery, it was a goal, it was safety it was so many things, and with it gone with no hopes of returning, no matter how many new places people built they were all empty and never the same.
and with it gone everyone literally had to go their own ways. everyone who gathered there went far far away to make their own homes.
on a meta standpoint, people like talk about how much they miss old dream smp streams and that’s because of the non serious lore streams. where walking down a path and bumping into someone could lead to goofing off or serious talks.
where tommy could build a pathway from manberg to pogtopia for prime and for the upcoming rebellion, and get caught by a vice president who decided it was his day off and he was going to roleplay as a mcdonald’s worker.
it’s how you have tommy and tubbo goofing off on the server not doing lore, only for schlatt to see and they go lore mode and have to make up a pregnancy excuse.
it’s how you got silly serious moments. it’s also just straight up how you had people interact. if everyone lived hundreds of blocks away, it’s harder to just randomly run into each other while building or running to do something, meaning you’re less likely to talk, and less likely for anything to happen.
when l’manberg acted as a central hang out spot, people built their homes in close proximity, they would stick around the area and things naturally happened.
destroying l’manberg was, in my opinion, the worst thing they could have done. doomsday did very very little narratively to the story. the community house gathering did more to the story than doomsday did. and it was awful because tommy rallied people behind him to fight in doomsday not for him, but because if they could do this to l’manberg what would stop them from doing it to every other group.
and everyone fought, and despite an entire server fighting it was pointless.
the only thing doomsday did was force people to hide. and you can make claims for ranboo who went to live with phil and techno- but ranboo’s character arcs could’ve had a very similar outcome by staying with almost anyone else.
no l’manberg ultimately just drove everyone away, and there was never any serious or successful move to make anything on that server take its place, to fill the hole, so there was nothing to actively pull things together. no driving force or motivation, nothing to supply passive roleplay, nothing to bring people together.
everyone lost on doomsday. that loss of l’manberg meant no one could ever win again. just think about it. after doomsday, it was loss after loss.
the final disc confrontation? tommy and tubbo lost. they were rescued, but they lost their fight, and it was a trap anyway.
dream in prison? well he has punz on the outside, doesn’t matter, and he can control ranboo, and he still got to kill tommy AND ghostbur. it was a loss. and he escaped.
every single fight after. quackity lost, wilbur lost, tommy and tubbo lost again, and again. the server for everyone ended in a loss.
there was not ever a win again. usually in stories, after losses, you want something good to happen to make those hardships worth it. just like when good things happen you want bad things to happen to make it worth it, you need a balance.
think of the revolution. the up and down rollercoaster. the freedom into war into loss and death into hope into loss into compromise into win.
the election was a nail biting race where depending on who you voted for, was lose and a win. for tommy and wilbur it was a loss, but they quickly gathered things up, they had hope, and they had energy, and a plan, and techno joined and they were confident. there were ups and downs up until doomsday, afterword no character seemed to get an up. any positive was immediately trivialized. for example tommy’s decided to try and heal and make a hotel which was immediately turned into a problem where people tried to fight him over it and then he died. or he got a pet that made him happen and everyone tried to set it free or kill it. he finally starts to feel safe no relax and dream breaks loose, and he is endlessly stalked the entire time, and he dies alone with his abuser and his abuser’s accomplice.
there is never an up after doomsday, and killing l’manberg that day killed the dream smp.

Tips For Writing C!TommyInnit, From A Loser With Brainrot
Tommy is LOUD. Whether he's angry or excited or playing around, he's usually yelling. He is not aware of how loud he is unless he's specifically raising his voice to overpower the conversation (which he usually only does when he's angry at someone/thing, or to make a point). He's only quieter when he's serious, at peace, or very very sad
TOMMY IS SMART!!! He thinks things through when he has time to do so. He is strategic and considers other people's behaviors when he plans something out (ex building the tower overlooking the prison slowly, so Sam didn't get as suspicious, and making a point to only inhabit it when it was dark to be less noticed). Tommy knows how people act/think if he's familiar with them, and he uses that to his advantage.
However, Tommy's very impulsive, and his emotions overrun his brains very often. This happens the most when he's angry or scared.
Tommy lets people take pity on him 80% of the time. Unless it's a serious situation and he's trying to prove himself, (ex Logstedshire) he LOVES free shit and he very easily falls into the "oh poor little TommyInnit, he has no family to his name and is dirty and cold, won't you spare some netherite for his poor soul?" narrative.
Tommy is childish. He bickers over things that don't really matter and is the epitome of "he started it!!" when he gets in trouble. He also constantly nags at people until they cave to get what he wants. I have no idea how CC!Tommy plays being a youngest sibling SO WELL since he's an only child but that is exactly who C!Tommy is
Tommy is not brave. He hides behind people to avoid danger and he runs away from conflict if he can. The times where this didn't happen (Exile, Final Disc Confrontation, November 16th) were because he was backed into a corner, literally or figuratively, and was forced to fight back.
more under the cut bc this got very long lmao
Tommy is not very private UNLESS it concerns his past trauma. He will talk about what he's doing, every thought in his head, and what he thinks of everything he sees, UNLESS it's recounting what happened to him. Getting information like that from the source is like pulling teeth, even for people he trusts completely. The reasoning for this (best as I can tell anyway) is that he simply just doesn't want to relive it.
Tommy has a very black and white way of thinking about his allies. If someone helps his enemy, they are his enemy too. He doesn't really care about personal motivations or reasonings unless they're close to him (Tubbo) and he does not forgive easily.
However, he also recognizes power. When Tommy ran from Logstedshire, he ran to the person who killed his best friend because he knew Technoblade was very powerful against Dream. Another example is when he ran to Phil when Dream escaped prison and went after him, even though Phil destroyed L'manburg WITH Dream AND killed Wilbur, two things that Tommy vehemently hates him for. Tommy seemed to not be thinking very clearly when either of these events happened, so this may have been a purely impulsive decision made out of fear.
Tommy squirrels away his riches. He only breaks into his ender chest when he really needs the resources, ie diamond armor and weapons for a showdown. He actually has quite a lot of diamonds and gold if I recall correctly, but he still resorts to stone/iron tools and no armor in his day to day.
Kind of related to above, Tommy keeps momentos of people he cares about in his ender chest, where no one can reach them but him. He is terrified of losing these things because they remind him of when times were good, and he had people he loved. (This was actually said by him, I just don't remember the stream sorry ;;w;;)
Tommy is very stubborn. He doesn't cooperate very often and views the way he does things as the best way. The only time to my memory that he defaulted to someone else was when Wilbur was alive (L'manburg, Pogtopia)
Tommy likes maintaining his surroundings. This includes harvesting crops and replacing them, patching up creeper holes, and replacing missing blocks from his house or the Prime Path. He does these things without anyone telling him to, on his "down time" if you will, and doesn't really call attention to it
TOMMY LOVES ANIMALS. He doesn't like killing them and tries to eat carrots instead of killing for meat (although he doesn't seem to have qualms with eating meat that other people give him)
Tommy has a soft spot for kids/small creatures. He tried very hard to hate Michael because he was bitter about Ranboo and Tubbo's friendship but he broke almost instantly if I remember correctly. He fawns over "cute" things and gets thoroughly distracted from whatever he was doing if he notices a baby chicken or something
Tommy is rarely still. He almost always is doing something with his hands (ie building, chopping trees, etc) if he's in conversation with someone. The only times where he actually sits down and stops is when he's watching the sunset on his bench, or having a self reflection moment/processing heavy information.
I'll stop here, but I plan on making another post that more goes into his speaking mannerisms and whatnot. I hope this helps somebody trying to write C!Tommy, feel free to send me an ask if you have specific questions!!

35 best friends

Tumblr media
You parked in front of the twins house but didn’t get out of the car. Your hands were trembling at confronting Aether about this situation. He’s your friend and you felt awful having to have a serious talk with him. You let a sigh before finally having the courage to get out.
You walk up the steps and, hesitantly, knocked on the door. The door opens, revealing Lumine. She beamed and hugged you. “Yn! It’s been so long since you came over!” Your nerves washed away as you hugged her back. “I’m sure it wasn’t that long.” “But it was.” Lumine pulled away, letting you inside.
“Aether told me you were coming over so I made some snacks.” You smiled. “Aw, thanks.” The two of you sat down at the table where the snacks were placed. Lumina made cupcakes and cookies which were chocolate flavored. As you took a bite off the cupcake, you looked around, “Where’s Aether?” “In his room like a weirdo.” She says while taking a bite of a cookie. You couldn’t help but chuckle. “Don’t be so hard on him.” She shrugs, “Just cause he’s the oldest doesn’t mean he’s smart as he think he is.” You raised a brow at that but didn’t ask.
“Since he’s taking so long, how are you, yn?” Lumine asks. “I’m good. Actually, I recently got a boyfriend.” Lumine crossed her arms. “Are you for real?” “Yes, I am.” “Show me.” You take out your phone and opened photos to show him how Scaramouche looks like. Lumine gasped, “YOURE DATING THE NEW 5WIRL MEMBER?!” You nodded. “Damn, can’t believe yn finally found the one.” She wiped an invisible tear away. “Haha.” Lumine then laughed before holding your hands. “I’m happy for you.” You smiled. “But if he ever does something I won’t hesitate to break his leg.” “Lumine, please.”
You both laughed before you stood up. “Can I use your bathroom?” “Of course.” As you walked out the dining room, you noticed a photo that hanged on the wall. ‘That wasn’t there before.’ “Hey, what’s that?” “Hm?” Lumine got up and followed you as you were pointing at the object. It was Aether and Lumine smiling together but Aether held flowers and a flower crown while Lumine held his arm, heads touching. “Oh! Aether won the baking competition a few months back. Remember, we worked there part time? I managed to convince him since he’s better at baking than me. I’m more a savory girl.” You stared at it a long while. “Oh. I… I didn’t know that…”
Lumine looked at you odd. “You didn’t? But, Aether told me he told you?” Your eyes widen slightly but shook your head. Lumine frowned at that. She was going to yell at him once he comes out. After looking at the photo, you headed up the stairs to the bathroom. After doing your business and left, you noticed Aethers door was creaked open. You smirked as you slowly walked. “Aether, hi.” But he wasn’t there.
You pouted but noticed how bland his room was. It seemed his room changed the last time you saw him. His walls are covered with band posters and he now had a desk with discs and notebooks piling up. You opened the door a bit more till it hit something. You peeled your head in and a box was right there coming out of his closet. You shook your head, “Someone could trip.” You tried to pick it up but you grabbed the lid instead. “Its not even closed properly.” You sigh and went to close it but noticed photos of him when he was younger.
You smiled to yourself, “He looks tiny.” You put the lid down to your side while looking at all his photos before he entered 5WIRL. You laughed when you remembered some of the events, even his childhood due to Lumine always talking about him. Then, you froze when you saw one of you and him, hidden away from all the others. You took it out and touched the stain that was on your face. It was when you and Aether got accepted in the same college. Since the old one you guys went to when you first met wasn’t really good, you guys decided to leave.
It was your idea and it worked. You couldn’t help but feel a bit sad that it was locked away. “Yn?” You jumped as you looked up at the door to see Aether, shocked that you were in his room. “Aether, what did I do wrong?” He gasped at the sudden question. “Yn-“ “Aether.” Lumine joined in with a stern look. “Maybe you should talk to them outside. I promise I won’t listen.” You stood up after carefully placing the photo away and closing the box. You and Aether head outside and sit down on the steps once Lumine closes the door.
The awkwardness between you two grew. “Aether, we’re friends. Why have you been acting weird lately? Did I do something? Did I make you uncomfortable?” He didn’t answer and just shook his head. “Then what? It makes me sad that you don’t want to talk to me. Especially when I announced Scara and I’s relationship, you didn’t seem cool with it.” Your voice cracked and Aether finally spoke up, “I’m just upset.” “About what?” You could already feel the waterworks coming. “That we’re not as close as we used to be.” You tilted your head. “What?” “Yn, after I joined 5WIRL, we stopped talking. You were happy for me but it sucks that you talked with me less and less and focused more on the others.” You gasped, “Aether, that’s not true. I still care for you.”
“Yes but I’m not your best friend. Venti is.” “Venti?” He nods. “I know it’s stupid but you confide more in Venti even though we knew each other longer. Whenever something happens, it’s always Venti you tell first. It should be me. I’ve know you the longest, why does Venti get to know everything and not me?” So that’s what it is. You pulled your legs up to hide your face. “To be honest, when you joined 5WIRL, I got a bit sad.” “What?” “I was happy for you, yes, but you couldn’t hang out with me as much anymore. If we did, you’d get in trouble. You even got overworked on your first few days that I thought it was best to stay away. You were always busy when I asked to hang out with you. I remember when you passed out from exhaustion.”
You sniffled as the tears started to flow. “Lumine called me. She was so scared and that made me scared. I didn’t expect her to say, ‘Yn, my brother is the hospital.’ I never left home so fast. I remember when I went in, I never left your side. That was the worst day of my life. I ignored the rest and only looked at you. And when you woke up, I hugged you so hard. I didn’t want to let you go. I don’t want anything bad to happen to you or the rest of the guys. That’s why I don’t care what your manager says. I won’t let her hurt my friends.” You turned to him with a smile despite the tear stains you have.
“You’re my best friend, Aether. I don’t want you to feel like I forgot all the moments we had.” You held his hand and it was his turned to cry. “Yn, the photo you had, it’s my fault it looks that way. I was upset with you when you told us that you were dating Scaramouche because I realized you told Venti everything about your feelings for him. You told him stuff you didn’t tell the rest of the group. I was acting like a child, throwing things in my room. I had a cup of coffee on my desk because Lumine made it and the photo of us was right there. I was stupid and bumped into my chair, making my desk wobble and the drink spilled all over. Then, I realized my mistake and noticed it was ruined.”
He then covered his face with his free hand as he cried even harder. “Im so sorry, yn. Im sorry that i acted like a fool.” You smiled and pulled him into a hug. “It’s okay, Aether. Im not mad at you. I love you.” He cried and cried as he was relieved you two are best friends once again.
Lumine watched you two from the window with a smile. “Stupid brother.”

I would almost say that c!Tommy became obsessed with c!Dream after staged finale because of his desire for closure. He wanted, desperately, an explanation for his pain. c!Dream, unfortunately, was not at a place emotionally to be able to give c!Tommy a real answer. You can tell that c!Tommy doesn’t fully buy the “I’m a monster, I’m a villain, everything I do comes from a place of evil” mask (ha) he puts on and it shows in when c!Tommy assigns him “homework” on the first day in the form of the Why book. c!Tommy never truly gave up on c!Dream, in my honest opinion, despite the pain he endured and the fear he held c!Tommy wanted to hear c!Dream out. The tragedy is that it just took c!Dream too long to actually confront himself and come to terms with what he really wanted.
mmhm
i wouldn't say c!tommy's ummm obsession post-staged finale purely comes from that point in time or for that reason exclusively, but i think that the why of it all very much follows c!tommy doggedly every step of the way even when he's trying not to think about it. like, that was his friend, and all of a sudden he became someone unrecognizable, and tommy never gets a half decent reason why. c!tommy is...always kind of fixated on c!dream? like, from the beginning really, hence the "it's just you and me against dream" that echoes throughout the story long before exile is even a thing--it's just he started off a lot more sure about all of the pieces in this equation (himself) (tubbo) (the discs) (dream) and then is left at the end of it all staring at all of the pieces that have somehow become something completely different over the course of a few years. why can't it just be simple again. i miss when it was simple.
but yeah, for sure, c!tommy is one of the few people on this server that does go hey, what the fuck, doesn't that hurt? why are you doing this, that's insane, what? give me a reason. give me an actual reason. and c!tommy is also the place where c!dream stumbles, over and over again, to give a reason worth listening to--of course c!tommy thinks c!dream is obsessed with him, it's the only damn thing c!dream will tell him.
there's plenty on the c!tommy side that is also just, coping with everything by pushing it onto c!dream, which is kind of a mutual deal of theirs. hence the screaming past each other during that one stream in the finale and like, the nonsense that was you can't just tell other people they cant go into your land !!!! like that wasn't what lmanburg did. and c!tommy doesn't even want to kill c!dream when he's imprisoned until c!wilbur scares the shit out of him in limbo and he decides that there's no option--and that mission to Kill Dream follows them into the finale. but yeah, mixed into alluvthat is for sure a desire to know why things with dream went to hell

How people seem to think Dream's PlanTM works:
Step 1: Frame Tommy for crimes Step 2: Get him exiled Step 3: Get Tubbo’s disc Step 4: Destroy L'manburg Step 5: Stage an epic final confrontation over the discs Step 6: Get locked up Step 7: ??? Step 8: Profit!
How it actually works:
Profit! > ??? >> Get locked up  >>> Need to give someone a reason to lock him up (I’m already beefing with Tommy. Staging an epic final confrontation over the discs would work.) >>>> Need to get the discs for the confrontation. (Buying the disc off of Skeppy is easy but Tubbo is loyal to Tommy and wouldn’t just hand it over.) >>>>> Need to sabotage Tubbo’s loyalty to Tommy. (He wants L’manburg to be peaceful. I could present myself as an ally to his goal and Tommy as an obstacle.) >>>>>> Need to mess up their communication so they won’t just make up (Exiling Tommy would leave him far away, but won’t guarantee success. Mess him up so he would self sabotage his relationships in case they do talk.) >>>>>>> Frame Tommy for crimes he could be punished for.
>>> Need to make sure no one would suspect anything (Tommy already sees me as a disney villain. Publicly destroying L’manburg would let everyone see me twirling my mustache and get them on board with locking me up.)

dream's mask and symbolism
recently (or rather, some time ago, at this point) i saw a post on the symbolism over dreams mask but i felt awkward just putting my own opinions on a reblog so my spiel will appear here:
the purpose of a mask is to hide and/protect someone's face, whether it be about identity, physical image, or safety during a pandemic. thus, a person using a mask has something to protect: usually one of the three aforementioned concepts.
the mask: whole
cdream, his skin, obviously does not have a mask, but the characterization of him having a mask originates from cc!dream's facelessness. the popularity of that concept made it so that it is popularly accepted that cdream dons a mask wherever he goes, and the fact that his skin does not change much throughout the majority of the server also helps in the wide acceptance of this theme.
therefore, we establish that cdream wears a mask throughout the majority of the dsmp, up to ctommy unmasking dream during his disc confrontation and cquackity doing the same in prison, and then also after the prison arc until the very final lore stream.
physical image
cdream hiding his face means that he has something to hide & protect, and in literal terms, this would be his physical image. when someone wears a full face mask, no one would be able to know what they truly look like, and this gives them an element of mysteriousness, and in cdream's case with the simplicity of his mask, allows him to be even more terrifying. this also leads to my second point: by hiding his physical image, no one would be able to see how his appearance changes over the course of the storyline.
characterization
cdream's character changes drastically throughout the storyline of not just the disc saga but also with l'manburg/manburg/pogtopia/etc and the prison arc. he begins with pure intentions, ends with the same intentions, but all throughout, his method of reaching his ultimate goal changes: from manipulation, to war, destruction, and self-sacrifice, etc, etc. he becomes more and more desperate, more and more willing to do whatever he can to achieve his goal. he also initially refutes that he is a villain, but then changes to embrace that role more and more.
meanwhile, cdream is wearing a mask. his physical appearance does not change much; people are able to keep on easily believing that cdream is a powerful and ruthless character without much emotions. oh right, masks also hides someone's faces. literally and figuratively, as he further embraces his role as a villain, cdream dons a physical mask and a verbal one to distance himself from the server to be seen as such an evil character.
this image of a powerful and evil character is what the masks does for cdream. he (or this image of him) is everlasting, almost like a higher being, and a malicious one at that.
characterization II
but, in all truth, cdream is very vulnerable. for as much as he claims that he has destroyed his attachments, these very feelings of protection and homeliness are what drives him to do what he says and does, especially as revealed during the dsmp finale. he changes so much behind that mask.
the mask: destroyed
as mentioned above, this occurs arguably on two occasions: the disc confrontation or also in prison. both have similar but also different implications.
disc confrontation
it is at this finale that ctommy gets his moment; he shines by breaking away cdream's protective shell and getting his rightful vengeance by killing him twice before sending him to prison. he pressures cdream with the presence of the server to take off all of his armor, and proceeds to kill him. for some fans, the armor represents cdream's mask-- particularly the helmet-- since he is always seen with his armor on in the server. as is with almost every other pvp-oriented person on the server, but ive digressed. taking off the armor is part of taking off that which is hiding what is inside cdream: his physical body, and his well-being. perhaps in the scene where he is compelled to throw his armor into the hole is part of him letting go of his image of a tyrant, but personally, i'd disagree, since the disc confrontation was all planned and organized by cdream; the armor, perhaps, is just the first layer.
the confrontation was all supposed to be under control-- his control. the armor and hole scene, cdream probably would've predicted; he went along with ctommys commands without much resistance, and honestly, this moment is just as symbolic to ctommy as cdream. just as cdream is pretending to let go of his image, or his powerful image is forcefully shoved off of him: ctommy is doing to cdream what he did to ctommy. this is the retribution of the golden rule: treat others how you'd want them to treat you. just as how cdream stripped ctommy bare of all his friends and protection in exile, thus also ctommy to cdream of his items and the power that he held from having them, including both the advantage in pvp and his frightening image. dream probably knew this was going to happen, since thats what you do when you want to kill someone. but, after the armor and the hole scene, ctommy kills cdream-- once, which was alright, fine, he also knew this was going to happen, and then twice. by the time he came back after his first death, cdream was screaming for mercy.
the cdream deaths are also widely interpreted as him losing his mask. or at the very least, it cracks. maybe ctommy was merciful enough to leave the last bit on, or maybe it was all shaken off as cdream begged and pleaded to be let to live-- and then the reveal of the revive book in his hands. but before that, when cdream was being killed: this is the physical shaking off of his very precious lives, the two extra chances he has at living, something preciously irreplaceable. thus, cdream realizes that the situation is spiraling out of control. he has to time this very well, between satisfying ctommy's anger and the reveal of the revive book, as well as his life. this is a gamble on his life. at that moment, cdream is showing his own true desperation, freed from his mask out of fear of death, freed from his mask by ctommy (the very person he sought to control, and the very person seeking to destroy him). look at the irony!
prison & cquackity
perhaps the mask also represents the control the cdream believes that he has over his surroundings. in the prison, cdream is either maskless (going with the above scenario), or half-masked (for cquackity to finish destroying).
either way, cdream's maskless-ness represents how he has no protection, no outer image, nil, none. this protection manifests itself in cdreams mind as the perceived control he has over situations because of the image he believes he has created for himself, because with this villainy, he can control the movements and actions of others. in the prison, though, when he is fully unmasked, he is all open for his visitors to see and tear open and look for themselves: who cdream truly is. maybe this is a good thing, that people will be able to see his true self-- not a villain, but a man with hopes and dreams. thus, when cquackity comes around, what he does is tear cdream, already unmasked, further apart. there is no more armor to protect him, and inside the prison, all thats left of cdream is his real body, and his real mind. and by real i mean unmasked, and not faked.
i like the other interpretation better though: that cdream goes into the prison half-masked. he still has a semblance of control, because he has punz, and technoblade, right? he planned for himself to go to prison... but what he didn't plan for was cquackity's deal with the warden. this is when he loses the rest of his mask, because this is when he loses complete control over not just the situation, but what happens to his own body, and he also can no longer influence other people, because he has no more power. he's being starved, tortured, and confined in a box with no escape nor contact with anything outside the prison; when cquackity comes, csam shuts down the ability for anyone else other than cquackity to visit cdream. so this, the point when he loses the rest of his physical mask is the same as the point when loses the rest of anything, any thing else that he could possibly have control over.
the mask: re-made
after prison, what does cdream do?
cdream gets his armor again, and he puts his mask back on. this mask physically and symbolically hides the effects of the prison on his being: the scars of both the body and the mind. he goes back to being powerful, being a big bad end-game boss, hiding in his mighty prison of which no longer traps him but is his safe place (a whole analysis post on the prison can be made holy) but also to others, the evil villain's lair... cdream resumes his status quo from before the prison. but, he is Not Alright underneath the mask-- but who can tell? who would want to tell, and try to see underneath the mask?
because on the server, there aren't many people who are willing to uncover the mask that cdream has laid over himself, the act that he puts on to be a villain in order to achieve his goals. part of the reason why cdream's 'mask' never gets 'taken off' is because no one cares enough about the true him-- and funnily enough, the only four/five people on the server are: cpunz, ctechnoblade, ctommy, and cquackity. and chbomb lmao. but thats besides the point: half of the people care about his "true self" because they are friends and close allies, while the other half want to reveal it to be able to hurt and destroy him. everyone else only think too shallowly about him: to them, cdream is an evil character harboring evil intentions, and thus the reasons behind said intentions are also similarly evil-- because they need a face to despise.
but its important to note that it isnt just cdream aiming to make himself a villain; it is everyone else as much as he. it's like a negative feedback loop, and i also want to point out that it was all started by cwilbur, who was the first to antagonize cdream as a major villain.
so, both during and after the prison, this feedback loop is why the villainous image of cdream persists. during the disc confrontation, all that happened was that the people were shown that cdream is not strong but weak. yet, just because he's now weak and defeated doesn't mean that the shadow of his villainy won't haunt him or the other uninvolved server members.
the mask: the end
at the very last stream, what is known as the dsmp finale between cdream and ctommy: something shifts. at the very end of the stream, after they argue and argue and argue, trying to get the moral upper hand, tommy trying to gain sympathy, displaying to the world all their differences and oppositions as if they can never, ever agree... ctommy gets killed in the heat of the argument. he gets revived. and he undergoes a revelation.
here, ctommy is very crucial to the moment because he gets dream to take off his helmet, which, in that moment, likely represents cdream's mask. because it is only after that moment that cdream starts talking about the real reasons why he's doing stuff, that he wants everyone to be a happy family, just like how he did privately to punz on the night after the butcher army. here, cdream starts being genuine; he asks: "is it not too late?" to his greatest nemesis.
here, the mask represents all the false narratives that he put forth, and perhaps all the sins that came along with them, and it reveals him: he who did evil for the sake of good, he who sold his soul for the world, he who told his friends, showed his friends, that he is evil-- for the sake of all of his friends and their friendship. it reveals him, as a man, his true face and physical appearance, taking off a bit of the armor that protects him.
this moment where cdream takes off his mask and starts asking if its possible for change is a culmination of cdream and ctommy's character: mutual understanding and hope.
the mask is like a wall that prevents cdream from seeing eye-to-eye with anyone, from reaching mutual understanding from anyone (except for cpunz ig, who supports him no matter how evil he is). by getting cdream to taking off the mask, he gets cdream to reveal the truth, but also understand that there is hope for the future. a better future.
(we dont talk about the nuke)
cdream personally taking off his mask during this time also directly contrasts with how ctommy and cquackity forcibly takes it off of him. there, they are removing the illusion of control cdream has-- to the people of dsmp, and then to cdream himself; yet, despite having everything taken away from him, he still holds close to his heart his ultimate goals. but, at the nuke finale, it is cdream deciding to reveal his thoughts and feelings himself, and this is crucial to his character's growth. even with all his armor on and cpunz is with him, he takes off his mask, his emotional barrier of sorts, to be able to tell the truth: his truth.
Conclusion
cdream's mask has been crucial to his characterization throughout the different arcs and storylines. while in physical depictions, it is an object that hides and protects one's physical appearance, it also affects the image of his character by providing an element of mystery and notoriety.
through the disc confrontation with ctommy and the torture cdream experienced by the hands of cquackity and csam, we can see them forcibly remove cdream's mask and do away with whatever semblance of power and control cdream has-- both over the people of the server, as well as cdream himself.
when cdream returns from the prison, it's as if nothing had changed; this is because of how established his image already is, and this emphasizes his loneliness (with the exception of cpunz) and continues to cast shadows on the rest of the smp.
finally, in the dsmp nuke finale, cdream ultimately decides to take of his mask on his own and reveals his intentions, displaying strong character development and hope.
tldr: the mask protects cdream, assists in his spiral to evil, and is also a tool used to represent changes in his characterization and his situation.

There's one take that has been floating around recently which is that c!Dream and c!Tommy are at the very least mutually obsessive (though I've also seen multiple people claim that c!Tommy is the only obsessive one of the two which sure is a take), so here's your reminder that c!Dream:
Used to hide in Tommy's walls and floor
Used to stalk Tommy, and has done it again after Tommy ran from Logstedshire and after he broke out of prison
Used to log off in Tommy's music room so he could log in if Tommy ever decided to play one of his discs
Followed Tommy around so much that Fundy joked about him being Tommy's stalker
Built tunnels connecting his and Tommy's base without Tommy's consent or knowledge
Tried to bribe Tommy and only Tommy into switching sides when L'Manburg just started (pre-independence war)
Addressed Tommy first and then continued connecting L'Manburg to him more than Wilbur (calling it 'L'Manchildbur' for example) despite Wilbur being the actual president
Chose to be the one killing Tommy instead of Wilbur in the FCR
Accepted the Discs as payment to give L'Manburg independence after he literally went to war and refused any possible peaceful solution before
Specifically gave a chest full of resources (which included Dream's prized crossbow) to Tommy and personally wrote a book for him during Pogtopia despite Tommy not being the leader nor the strongest fighter there
After switching sides he still allowed Tommy to go back to his home to get his stuff once he asked when they were alone
Spent most of his time pre-Pogtopia vs Manburg war with Tommy even after they knew they were enemies (and even after Tommy pointed out it was rather weird)
Gave a whole speech about how the only thing he cared about were Tommy's discs because they gave him control over Tommy in a believable enough way to make his best friend start losing his trust in him
Set Tommy up to get him exiled (framing him and later exaggerating his actions to get him punished for something that has never been punished before or after as it's commonplace on the smp) so they could spend time together alone and abused him into dependency during that time
He also sabotaged Tommy's communication with the outside during that time to further isolate him (intercepting his letter exchange with Ranboo and his party invites, as well as spreading misinformation about Tommy not wanting to see anyone)
Killed Mexican Dream for no other reason than the fact that MD was gonna move in near Tommy and offer him company that wasn't Dream
Tried to kill Ghostbur for the same reason
Gave a speech about his and Tommy's story would never be over because Tommy was "too fun"
Tried to kill Tubbo "to give Tommy an origin story"
Called Tommy the origin of attachment and the "key to everything" while announcing that he intended to kidnap him again and lock him away in the prison
Risked his final life when Tommy threatened to kill himself unless Dream went back and let Tommy kill him
When Tommy announced that he would stop visiting Dream in prison as it was not good for him, Dream resulted to begging to keep him there (he didn't show any interest in anyone else visiting at any point)
Organized an attack on the prison with Ranboo that had the objective of locking Tommy in there with him for at least a week (and demonstrated that he knew as much when he cited the prison contracts he wrote)
Always talked about "Tommy Tommy Tommy" while he was in prison according to Sam
Told Tommy they would be immortal together
Went after Tommy as soon as he got any basic gear once he was out of the prison, prioritizing that to getting back his armor and weapons, which everyone assumed would be his priority
Claimed Tommy was already immortal because he would keep reviving him over and over again
Dug a whole room under Tommy's home to leave an especially made torture mixtape there for him
As it has been pointed out already, in and out of universe, during the confrontation with Wilbur and Tommy in the prison he was staring at Tommy the whole time to assess his reactions despite Wilbur being the one who was threatening him
Admitted that he revived Wilbur only to torture Tommy
When trying to make himself look better in front of Sam he said that he set up the attachment vault as a little show for Tommy specifically
Meanwhile what people are using as proof of c!Tommy being obsessed with c!Dream is him saying that the server is about him and c!Tubbo against c!Dream (which is what it has factually been about so far for him for no choice of his own) and him thinking about c!Dream when someone triggers him by mentioning his canonical abuser.
There's kind of a difference there I'd say...

Somnia SMP AU
So, this AU idea actually came from a conversation my wife and I had while I made a design for C!Dream.
! THIS AU IS STILL VERY MUCH A WIP !
This is Somnia.
Tumblr media
Somnia is a C!Dream who, Somehow, accidently discovered a way to travel through the multiverse. While on this journey though, he witnessed countless horrific events all cause by the Dreams in those universes. When he saw everything, he was mortified, deciding he couldn't bear to carry the same name and identity that these "Monsters" did. That would be when he changed his name from Dream, to Somnia. In a fit of rage, however, he confronted one of the Dreams, Even going so far as to take one of his lives. After he finally returned home, Saw Tommy, and everyone else, He vowed to never allow his SMP to turn out the way he'd seen various others. He then made sure everyone knew his name was no longer Dream, And the Server's name was to be changed as well.
Extra Info:
Tumblr media
-Because of the guilt that Somnia holds, He hosts Large serverwide festivals at the end of every month for each member to attend and enjoy.
-Once took Tommy's discs, but realized how much they meant to him and immediately returned them with cover of, "Oh, I lost those, Looks like Tommy found them anyways. Oh well."
-Actively works to prevent Several "Canon events" from happening.
-L'manberg was founded, But the revolution took place before Somnia's discovery of the multiverse.
-Prevented Schlatt from winning in the election, and Convinced Quackity to go along with Wilbur Instead.
--------
This is what I have so far, So stay tuned to see more of this AU, Including small Fanfics, Comics, doodles, and everyone else's character sheets + Designs. (Along with how their story has been altered by Somnia's experience with the Multiverse.)
-Thank you for Reading!
(ANY QUESTIONS ARE WELCOME! AS WELL AS ANY ART OF THE AU)
