Talks Machina Highlights - Critical Role C2E129 (March 16, 2021)

Tonight’s guests are Matt Mercer and Taliesin Jaffe!

Matt, on DMing Luc’s Revivify: “That was weird. It’s one thing when it happens because of player action and circumstances and the choices they make. When it’s entirely on me, unintentional, and just realizing different chess pieces you’ve set up, that’s rough.” It was especially rough since this was a child NPC related to a PC. “I was hoping somebody had a spell slot left.” He kept in mind that there are two clerics in the room and that they could resurrect the next day even if the Revivify went poorly. “A good chance, since it’s his first time. Okay, okay, okay, okay, I think we’ll be okay, we’ll see how this goes. It was really stressful in the moment! I did not set out to have that happen, but when I realized what was going to happen, I tried to see it through.” He wouldn’t have prevented a chance to bring him back. “There may have been an offshoot short-run series of games to find a way to bring him back. I would have found some way to correct the circumstance so the players could feel good about moving forward with the story and there was no undue punishment beyond their control.”

Taliesin on Cad’s response: “This is a big thing if you’re a cleric. It was very much coming in like an EMT. Everything should be fine... hopefully. Just focused in and got it done. The minute things started to go south it was like, okay, that’s the next problem.”

On Yeza’s feelings: “It is a very complicated situation. I think he, much like how Veth is trying to figure out what it is that she wants, I think he’s trying to help her find that while also figuring it out for himself. I think Yeza’s also noticing that because Veth’s the more active of the two of them she also takes the weight of the responsibility and the blame for things when they go wrong, unnecessarily. Especially when he himself acknowledges that he’s partially at fault for even dragging everyone in with the Conclave. As much as he’s appreciative for them coming back for him, there’s a lot of back and forth. He’s filled with a lot of regret, too, but he’s very much trying to convince Veth that it’s a burden that she doesn’t have to keep to herself, that they can share it and work through it together.” Matt mentions that, as an actor, he really loves exploring interactions between characters first and foremost. “Especially when you don’t know where it’s going to go.” He also praises Sam as a scene partner - “I really cherish that.”

How does Caduceus feel about Revivify and Speak with Dead? “Speak with Dead is an interesting middle ground, because he knows that it’s not actually speaking with the dead. It’s really just-- it’s almost medical, really. This is just reactivating a brain at a certain point. It’s practically just a muscle twitch at this point. That doesn’t really prod him in that direction. Revivify is interesting, because it had never really come up. At first I thought of it as bending the rules, but it’s not bending the rules. You knock over a plant, you replant it, you don’t stare at it and go ‘Well, that’s over.’ This is just doing the work. No, we can bring this thing back to health. This is all part of the circle of life, that sometimes we can save something. Especially given the stress that he’s put himself through over the past year of being with these people. He’s started to think of himself a bit as a battlefield medic, and triage is just part of the deal, and it’s completely acceptable.”

Did Trent really just want to talk? “Yeah, that circumstance, as it came together, Trent would never have arrived if there wasn’t an indication that there was some kind of infiltration or attack. Even beyond that, it was Jester breaking the concentration on her charm on that one guard when she created her duplicate.” The guards’ job is to inform a member of the Cerberus Assembly, and Trent lived the closest. “He didn’t know who it was, didn’t have any expectation necessarily. The minute he saw the illusion, he knew a powerful magic user was involved.” Seeing Caleb was an unexpected surprise. “I don’t think he wanted to throw down necessarily. He was more interested in figuring out exactly what the nature of this was.” Matt had multiple battlemaps that didn’t get used. “They managed to cleverly out-maneuver him in his surprise of seeing them.” The Nein rocketed up his priority list after that very quickly. Taliesin: “We’re so fucked.”

On Cad being “Uncle Caduceus” to Luc: “It’s the thing he misses most about home, is being a juvenile shit. It’s nice to be able to express that part of him again, as opposed to the serious, life-threatening, constant intensity. I’m very at home just being a little difficult.”

On Marion: “Like a lot of people in this whole narrative from the beginning, getting swept up in things larger than her and trying to adapt. This is a circumstance she’s avoided for a long time. She’s having a rough time in some ways, but simultaneously, she’s enduring. Like a mother would. She’s adapting, she’s making it work. Without much of a choice, you just kind of do the best you can and lean on the people around you to help you where they can. Luckily she has a daughter there. She’s probably surprising herself at how well she’s doing given the circumstances.” Matt talks about how weird it is to feel proud of character he’s created. “Of the many things Marion is incredible at, she’s a studier of the human condition. She’s seen and heard the stories of so many. That gives her a very special perspective. She can see elements of that fractured individual within Caleb, and knowing the good that he’s brought to his friends, and knowing he’s possibly saved her life from bad circumstances, she couldn’t not speak up. She very easily falls into that role of maternal comforter, because it’s one of the many things she’s really good at, she enjoys it, and she can see well when people need it.” He’s been enjoying having Marion along for this (despite the difficult circumstances) because he was always a little sad that they only got to see her for short periods of time.

On the Blooming Grove’s safety: “He’s afraid that it’s a premonition. He’s not pinned it down, but he’s happy to let his imagination wander. He at the very least feels like there’s a reason he’s having these thoughts, and that there’s a reason to go there. He’s a big believer that these things don’t just happen. He’s more likely to think that there’s a good reason to go versus a danger to go. He’s had a couple of ominous warnings lately, and he’s not used to them and not a fan. He’s more likely to read something like that as, there is something there waiting for you that you have to discover. There is something that is going to be helpful to you, even if it hurts.”

On Astrid: “While maybe not as readable in overall personality as Trent is, I still want to be careful to not discuss things that are still being discussed within the game and tossed around as possibilities. Astrid is another complicated character, as anyone would be who’s been through the life she has. I can’t say too much. I can say she’s definitely legitimately happy to see Bren/Caleb after all this time.” His reemergence definitely caught her off guard. “We’ll have to see where it goes from there.”

On Cad’s successful Divine Intervention: “He’s definitely hit the ‘on a mission from god’ stage. He’s been that way for the entire campaign of, this, this is what I’ve been waiting for. Even when it sucks a lot, it’s been nice that those things have popped up to remind him, no, no, you’re doing it right, everything’s good. Probably not going to survive the next week, but you’re doing good! Not quite 1 in a 100 chance, but I forget so often to make that roll, and it’s such a great roleplaying roll. I don’t know how at level 20 you could deal with the fact that you can do that every day.”

On Zeenoth getting his comeuppance: the kidnapping was a concept Marisha brought up for Beau’s backstory, and Matt went with it even though it was opposed to the Cobalt Soul’s philosophy because he knew rooting it out would make for an interesting story. “I felt it was an important beat to bring to her, because it was something that she was wronged by. And to show that there are still some good people out there who are trying to make things right.” After the tentative peace, dealing with this became Dairon’s next focus. “I was glad we finally got to it. So many people don’t have the opportunity in their lives to get that sort of justice and vindication, so if I can bring elements of that justice into our world, even for our own hope, I’m going to do that. Especially for my wife’s character, especially for a character that deserves that.” Taliesin points out that if it had come too early, Beau wouldn’t have believed it.

Cad’s thoughts on the Tomb Taker betrayal? “He knew it was gonna come at some point. There was no way that was gonna last. He was hoping it was gonna last a little longer. He was really hoping they had a vested interest in getting them all the way to the end. Nope, this is apparently as far as we go, and he was not prepared for that.” He was expecting the potential for de-escalation. “Caduceus is the only character in there that doesn’t have a history with Lucien. I think he sees him a little more clearly than everybody else does. They’re all looking for this person that Clay, at least, is of the opinion that he’s just not there. This is a very manipulative, very dangerous infernal human. Just smarter than all of them. Really aware that there is no calculating what the hell is going to happen. Conversation is the only way you can deal with someone like that.”

Taliesin on Lucien: “I’m excited he’s the one that’s going to kill us all. Poetic that this is how the game ends.” Matt was delighted when Taliesin handed him carte blanche to do what he wanted with Molly’s past. “I was like ‘shit... oh, wait!’ The character of Lucien was always intended to be an antagonist so that it would have been Molly being chased by the person who wanted their body back. But then it happened that he got his body back.” Taliesin: “He’s so much worse than I ever hoped.”

Matt, on the Holy Avenger: “I hadn’t thought to initially even give that sword.” The good roll was the only reason Kima handed that over. “Well, sure, you get the sword. It was very reactionary, it wasn’t my intent originally. I was like, well, I mean, there’s two avenues she can take with this.” Multiclass into Paladin, or lean into the fact that her subclass is essentially a barbarian paladin. “This really works out in a uniquely beautiful way. Let me see if I can lay out a path for her to earn it.”

On Cad’s attempt at lying blowing up in his face: “He was like that kid that had a really bad day in high school and was like, you know what? I’m going to let loose. This is it. I’m gonna dye a streak in my hair. And then tries to give himself a haircut and ends up with half bangs. Well, okay, obviously I’m not that person. I was feeling a little distraught and I didn’t handle it well. Maybe I’m going dark... no, I’m not going dark. Nope.” Matt mentions how much he relates to Caduceus.

Matt, on the Eyes: “What can I tell you? I’m enjoying the hell out of it. The moment they began to really push to read that book, I was like, okay, this is on you. I’m excited for the point in the narrative where the march continues back to Eiselcross. I am almost impatient - not really - because we’re on the cusp of getting to more of the meat. There’s so much to learn, so much to see, so much to explore. I love instilling my players with absolute terror.”

Thoughts on Jester’s Tarot reading? Taliesin cackles. “Molly made the cards, so. Did it to himself, he did, he did.” Matt: “Once again, another example of things working out unexpectedly and too perfectly for an improvised moment. Fuck.” Taliesin: “Bless the wisdom of chaos.” Matt: “I love that even at this point in the campaign, Molly continues to fuck with people. I’m just so proud. That deeply shook Lucien, for reasons.” Taliesin: “It’s the everlasting gobstopper smoke bomb.”

I am sorry for not writing for a while. I haven't been feeling too well + our wifi was out for the past...4 days?? And that really destroyed me.

But it's back now and yesterday my birthday present arrived (very early...by birthday is on the 2nd November) it's a pc and a monitor. I payed for the pc and my parents r going to be giving me back the money I used to pay for the monitor :>>

I also recently changed my artstyle?? I am super happy with it now. I just don't care abt like concepts anymore. I'll just draw what makes me happy.

Also I need advice: I kinda wanna delete Instagram... it's so toxic and I never liked it ...i only have it cuz I know it's easier to get a following there. But since it's changing to a video platform it's kinda useless for my art too. Is DeviantArt a good option? I had it once when I was 14. I just wanna share my art. On tumblr it's even harder to make ppl find ur art from what I saw.

Welcome back to observations with your favorite Kamski obsessed roleplayer. Last time, we talked about the actual location of Elijah's villa (boy was that a pain to dig back up too), the exact location of it on Belle Island. Today, it's time to discuss inside.

So, credit where credit is due, I want to thank @nock-and-bolt for their post about it that caused me to dig myself because, wow. I actually bought the game on PC and paid for the freecam (from otis_inf on Patr.eon) to dig because I am absolutely desperate. Hope you enjoy!

For my research purposes, I will be focusing on the parts of the rooms you don’t get to see normally, since the pool room and waiting room are explored enough in game... As well as a bunch of other things, wow this post got long LOL woops.

Okay, so, first off, I have said this before and I will say it again. This place is UGLY. But, I don’t get modern design, so we will move on from that. Second, the place is literally aesthetic only, I swear to you. There are at least 20+ different chairs/couches that you can see just in the main parts of the house. There’s no reason to have that much sitting space unless you either host people a lot, which I highly doubt he does, or its for design and nothing else. It doesn’t even include what we can’t see on the other side of the house, its just the rooms we CAN see.

Its not a place you live, this is like a museum. Or office or some showroom.

The left side (facing the building) is the only part that I believe is the living space and it seems to be very small. But, knowing that Kamski has an appreciation for Japanese culture, and that I personally believe he’s absolutely a minimalist, this would make sense. He doesn’t need more than this small corner of the house for the kitchen, bathroom, and bedroom.

Roughly this size which, like I said, is probably enough for him. It would be the size of basically a studio apartment except more utilized because the living room and dining room are the other side of the house.

But, moving on from the outside. Now, nock-and-bolt showed us what was behind the door that Chloe walks through in the pool room, but what I am curious about now is the farthest right door in the waiting area.

I think I remember seeing concept art that made it out to be what looked like it could have been a room, there was a bookshelf behind the door. I always assumed it was a home office or something, and its what I personally have worked with in my headcanons. But, nope. Thats actually wrong.

Its just another hallway into this main living room. Which makes sense, sort of, if the kitchen and other things are on the other side of the waiting area. So you don’t always have to walk through the pool room to get to the other side of the house. But, whats super neat, that I love about this, is the stuff on the shelf here. Its just a few things but boy are they interesting.

A floral vase and a couple weird, modern art pieces. I really don’t like Elijah’s style, I can’t stress that enough here, but its again clear how much of a minimalist he is. But, there is also one more thing:

What looks like some sort of Greek inspired vase the highest on the shelves. I did a bit of research to figure out what its supposed to be and what I could find seems to be referring to a nostos, which is “is a theme used in Ancient Greek literature, which includes an epic hero returning home by sea.” Which I only found from reading about Odysseus who was most known for his own nostos that took his 10 “eventful” years after the decade long trojan war, the subject of the Odyssey, one of two major ancient Greek epic poems attributed to Homer.

Crucial themes in the poem include the ideas of nostos (νόστος; "return"), wandering, xenia (ξενία; "guest-friendship"), testing, and omens. Scholars still reflect on the narrative significance of certain groups in the poem, such as women and slaves, who have a more prominent role in the epic than in many other works of ancient literature. This focus is especially remarkable when considered beside the Iliad, which centres the exploits of soldiers and kings during the Trojan War.

I am pretty sure the symbolism in the game is pretty obvious by this point, but this is just interesting because the vase is not something anyone would EVER see in the game. Its behind a door you can’t open, that never opens, and tucked away in the corner you would never see. But, it is still important for Elijah Kamski as a character. Assumed trials and tribulations, as well as the 10 year gap? Its just too coincidental. But, thats a whole other story honestly, and I don’t really know the most about Greek Mythos to be talking about it right now.

Some other small things from this weird house that I thought were interesting. Just textures really, but detail. The marks on the cellos may be my favorite because it means they’re being used. Probably played in that chair sitting beside them.

ALSO THIS? Theres one chair that isn’t pushed in equal with the others. ONE. Its literally like an inch out further than the other 7 chairs. Someone was sitting there recently.

Now, these are interesting. because they--

--are literal tubes. I’m assuming these are for the androids. Maybe where they go when they aren’t in use or doing something. Or just. Charging? Stations? I don’t know, it could literally be a spawn point for them, but I think they are purposely placed and its interesting to me that they are placed like pedestals in front of the tv. Like he just likes to look at them standing there. Like a weirdo.

Now we have this door. This door that I thought went somewhere because I didn’t notice it from the outside before but. Nope. It just goes outside.

So I watched a video recently that was someone looking at $40 million NYC apartments and I realize what this door must be. Its the only way to get fresh air in this bitch. None of the other windows are made to be opened, anywhere in this villa. So, there has to be one. Its just weird to me that its at the far end overlooking the pier.

I just have a love hate relationship with this place. Its aesthetic, but the aesthetic is modern and weird. This place, what we can see of it, is not a living space. This is an office. What you show off to show how much money you have. I’m curious what this place looks like during the Kamski ending. All dark even though I think all these lights he has on are NEVER turned off. We shall see...

Also when Chloe goes to talk to Elijah she stands at this door and doesn’t move until shes ready again. He’s spawned in the pool by this point. Sure, when she goes to open the door again, she appears a few steps back so she can walk up to it, but my heart wants to believe she was told to just stand there and make them wait LOL.

There was also a very human reaction from Chloe when Connor appeared to be standing in her way. I had stepped in so Kamski would start swimming and went behind the door to see where Chloe got the robe from (im sure she just pops it out of thin air because its just floating under the house) but she didn’t force him to step aside for some reason, like she has done before. She just... Waited there behind him. She reached behind her head, rubbed at her neck, motioned like she was impatient like... “God is this guy really going to just stand there and play with a quarter or is he going to move?” She even tapped her hand a couple times against her thigh. It was.... Strange to see.

In conclusion... Is there a conclusion? This is just a collection of things I discovered. If I find something else interesting, I will share. For now, thats all. uwu I went overboard and this is really long but.... I don’t call myself obsessed for nothing........

Children of the Lockdown - Sharing characters made during quarantine

Hullo, Gentle Readers. This week’s Question from a Denizen is an intriguing one, and it comes from a longtime questioner, our friend Graham-chesir. They ask, “So what do you think would be the best way for people to share the characters they made during quarantine but never got the chance to play, characters that eventually got full backstories and intended plots & futures?”

I have a confession to make, Gentle Readers. I am not one of those people who creates slews of random characters. Every once in a while, I come up with an idea, but it’s almost always because someone has told me, “Hey, I’m going to run a game. Want to play?” Now, because this doesn’t always result in a game actually happening, I do, in fact, have plenty of characters around that I’ve never played. But I don’t really just sit down and make them for fun. Concepts? Sure. I come up with character concepts all the time, but I generally pop them into a file I use to make NPCs for my campaigns.

Now, I know there are people who enjoy just making characters, but, given how rarely I get to play, this would feel like teasing to me. That’s not to say that, when I make a character, I don’t throw myself into it whole-heartedly. I once created a gnoll PC for a one-shot session and wrote 6 pages of backstory for him. I’m a storyteller by my nature, so I like to think about characters I’m going to play and come up with some idea of who they are. In this case, our characters were going to be high-level, so I felt justified. 15th level gnoll rangers don’t just come from nowhere, after all.

Someday, I may play Marikith Wintermane again, but maybe not. I have plenty of concepts if another campaign pops up in the future.

Anyway, back to the question. So I’m guessing we have lots of cool characters getting made, but no easy way to share them. Well, there are plenty of ways to get them out there. One option would be to convert them to NPC stat blocks and put them up on D&D Beyond. DMs can always use well fleshed-out NPCs, and it’s a way for you to give your creation out while simultaneously helping beleaguered DMs who don’t have time to make a new NPC and just need something premade.

There are plenty of D&D Forums out there. You might find one you like and start a thread for exactly this purpose. Most are likely to have a similar thread already, and you can get your ideas out as well as enjoy other peoples’ ideas. There are some good Telegram groups as well. I have one related to this blog that I started, and I know we’ve shared character ideas and art with each other. Since I’m already mentioning it, if anyone wants a link, just send me a private message on Telegram - I’m Aethanbear there - and ask to join the D&D group.

If you enjoy writing, one way to share a character is to write a story with them in it. At the end of the story, you could give game information about the character, along with a stat block or character sheet, if you were so inclined. Likewise, if you draw, paint, or otherwise create art, you could share art of your character, along with the character sheet. You could even create a blog, like this, to share your stories and art, maybe linking individual articles through a Twitter account if you generally prefer that.

In the end, of course, the best way to share a character is to play them in a game. Hopefully GMs are feeling just as creative during this quarantine as players, and new campaigns will be springing up, either remotely or once in-person gaming begins again safely. I know my campaign is being held in tableau, frozen just as the PCs have turned 20th level, because my players want to play out the battle with the Tarrasque in person. As a result, I’m running a linked side campaign with brand new characters which I intend to have consequences to the main campaign as well. The characters that my characters have created are pretty interesting - a laidback and affable Human Barbarian who prefers not to fight; a half-elf rogue who’s trying to get by on sheer charisma; a gnome charlatan illusionist who possesses a gender-swapped secret identity; a kobold artificer with a penchant for explosives; a yuan-ti pureblood druid with a fascination for the stars; and a loxodon monk who longs to be small. They’re great characters, and I can’t wait to see where things go for them. But, without the pandemic, we might never have seen them, and my main campaign would likely be long over.

GC, I hope this has given you some ideas. Maybe we could have some guest articles where people share character ideas. If anyone would be interested in reading or contributing, let me know. I like to grow and change this blog over time, and that could be a fun new feature.

As much D&D as I play, you'd imagine I would eventually get around to illustrating some of their most iconic monsters! Which is to say, the ones that I personally find the most iconic. Which is to say, the ones I memorized when I was reading my dad's monster manual at age nine. Purple worm - Sandworms never go out of style. I've seen a lot of rad designs for this bugger over the editions, but I favor the slightly less reptilian older takes for this particular critter. It's kinda basic, but sometimes that's what you want. It's like a shark or a crocodile: Just flat out unchanged across the ages. Hook horror - I've heard it rumored that Gygax used a small Gigan figure to represent this monster. I can't verify that, but it definitely sounds right. Hook horrors are one of the very first things you meet when you play around in the caves, and they kind of remind me of the Father Deep monsters of the Hork Bajir homeworld that way. Mind flayer - Mind flayers! Basically, take all of your Dracula conventions and dip them in a fresh coat of Lovecraft. There's that old "decadent aristocratic upper caste system who literally eats the poor, but still somehow comes across as less evil than the actual real life 1%" setup that will never stop being relevant. Though personally, I see mind flayers as the first alternative for folks who want to play that monster-who-feels-the-urge-to-eat-their-friends-but-refuses-to-do-it shtick but don't want to deal with vampire baggage. You know, the furry option! ... Slimy? Rubbery? Do we have a word for anthro-cephalopods? I'm only a casual furry. Gelatinous cube - I'm not apologizing for giving this one a slot. Froghemoth - So, back when I participated in my very first long-term campaign, I played a druid. You've met Talia before. Naturally, I was chomping at the bit for the day I finally got to turn her into a froghemoth, and celebrated the day my wish was finally granted and she was allowed to chug human-supremacist-cultists like popcorn. Yeah, okay, the froghemoth is one of the classic vore-monsters. But it's a charming design in its own right. Kind of a freaky Hanna Barbara critter, like you'd see Space Ghost fighting. No matter how many artists draw it, they can never shake that inherent goofiness that third edition tried so hard to purge. I would probably cram them somewhere onto Fronterra if I was sure they were public domain. As is, I'm 99% certain that this is what Visser Three turned into when he ate Elfangor. Tarrasque - D&D's original kaiju! Kind of just takes the name and nothing else when it comes to its mythological origins, but I don't mind. The Tarrasque is that endgame "let's test the players" final boss monster... Or at least it's supposed to be. My DM reskinned it for our final Pathfinder session, and one of the PCs still nearly killed it in a single turn. Also, he let Talia turn into one, so maybe Pathfinder is just bullshit? Regardless, the Tarrasque has one of those simple, iconic designs. I've heard rumors it was based on the concept art for Fallout's deathclaws, and like the Gigan-figure, I can't verify this in any way. With its reptilian features, twin horns, spiny carapace and grabby fingies, it has an undeniable lizardlike quality that I can't help but find charming. Kinda feels like a more refined version of Zilla? Though for an insatiable eating machine, I notice a lot of artists give it very little belly to work with. Come on, this guy eats entire cities! Give him somewhere to put it! Rust monster - An icon of icons, the rust monster! Drawing its origin from a bizarre Chinese "dinosaur" toy, later designs have made it more insectoid in appearance, but never feeling QUITE like anything Earthly. It's the four limbs. Between the four limbs and the tail, it's hard to tell if it's an arthropod mimicking a vertebrate or the other way around. I'm pretty sure this is part of what inspired my ossaderm creatures for Fronterra. Also, Ryla can turn into one in our campaign. I have no shortage of havoc to wreak when the opportunity comes. Behir - Dragons in D&D are kind of... extra. Godlike beings, paragons of whatever personality trait they represent. Whenever there's something uber powerful in D&D, it gets compared to dragons. It makes them kind of unapproachable. Behirs provide all the essentials of a dragon - Serpentine body, scaly skin, horns, sapience, breath weapon, taste for human flesh - wrapped up in a smaller, weirder, IMO cooler package. You know, your Lambton Worms. A lot easier to port in and out of adventures, a lot less of an event when they show up, but still a formidable force in their own right. I like the behir. The behir knows how to taunt me just the right amount. Bulette - Another Chinese "dinosaur" figure monster, the bulette is actually another one I associate with Talia. Whenever we faced a problem that didn't have a glaringly and immediately obvious solution, she would turn into a bulette, whether it was for beating up robots, digging through obstacles, trampling smurfs, navigating labyrinths, distracting slashers with cute dog tricks... it was kind of her signature form. But shenanigans aside, the bulette is just an excellent monster. While the "land shark" shtick may be common, there's a lot more going on with the bulette's design. It's rumored to be a mad wizard's creation, as he combined a snapping turtle with an armadillo and mixed in a helping of demon blood to taste. Personally, I always considered that to be a neat little rumor to flesh out the world, but never assumed it to be true. The bulette just feels too naturalistic for that. Like some kind of protomammal or crocodylomorph, or weird triassic monstrosity. Magic and demons and dragons and so on DO affect the ecosystem. I always figured the bulette was just something that evolved to compete in this new biosphere. Owlbear - This one, on the other hand, I fully believe the "mad wizard was bored" explanation. Another chinasaur critter, the owlbear is frequently made fun of. What makes it scarier than a regular bear? It can't fly, so why have owl parts at all? Why trade fangs for a beak in what is at best a latural move? Well, first of all, fuck you, owls are creepy motherfuckers, and that alone is enough to justify it. But secondly, that's part of its charm. Besides some improved vision, the owl DOESN'T make it more dangerous. What makes the owlbear dangerous is that it's an insane, Frankensteinian monstrosity roaming uncontrolled through the wilderness! It doesn't need weaponry, its sheer temperament is enough to make it a worthy opponent. Sure, the practical threat might not be hugely above that of a bear, but storytelling isn't about numbers. Any asshole can go outside and get eaten by a bear. The owlbear is part of this world. The owlbear is a reminder of what magic can do. Someone somewhere actually made this thing, for whatever reason, and now the world is irrevocably changed because of it. Owlbears go beyond practicality. They bring the lore! Also, bears don't have very good eyesight, so the big owl eyes probably make them better hunters. Flumph - Is that a Japanese-style martian? Do we just have aliens in D&D? Dear lord, I love them! Okay, the flumph has got a sizable hatedom. And that hatedom can eat my ass, because the flumph is precious and perfect just the way it is! Flumphs are designed as a sort of sidekick-type creature. They're not very good fighters, but they bring knowledge and lore to the table. Whether they're aliens from some far off star, seeking your aid to prevent catastrophe, or psionic natives of the Underdark eager to bask in your positivity and hopefully stick it to the tyrants they're forced to share real estate with. My group generally treats them as straight up aliens, benevolent but strange. Course, we're all pretty strange, so we get along just fine. Otyugh - Okay so, the aberration creature type implies that this is something from another world that doesn't belong. And yet otyughs, which are aberrations, are an essential part of this world's ecosystem? Okay, I can buy the idea that an alien organism adapted to our world and is now a key part of it. Fronterra's got a TON of that. It just feels like after a point, the otyugh would be considered a beast? Otyughs are great. Every ecosystem needs a decomposer, and every fantasy story needs at least one dive into the sewers. Otyughs provide both, and are intelligent enough to keep the plot moving if it hits a snag. There's always going to be garbage, refuse, carrion, decay, things that need to be broken down and processed. Carrion crawler - The carrion crawler is pretty similar to the otyugh in that it's technically not considered a beast, and therefor must have its origins elsewhere, but feels so integrated into the ecosystem that it just feels like it belongs. They usually can't talk, so they're not just reskinned otyughs, but I still consider them pretty essential. Otyughs find a singular spot where waste is dumped and shovel it down at their leisure, while carrion crawlers skulk through the tunnels, actively seeking their food. The crawler got one of the most radical redesigns on the transition from second to third edition, but I can't really choose a single favorite. The oldschool tentacle-faced cutworm looks like it could be a real animal, while the googly-eyed Halloween decoration feels like it could be from another world, merely having set up shop here. Could there name apply to two wholly different creatures? If so, then I'm not sure which one mine would be considered. I kinda mashed them together into something that doesn't quite feel like either. But I like it for what it is. Maybe I'll sneak it onto Fronterra. Aboleth - Tentacled, telepathic sea creatures who turn humans into slimy minions, who remember everything their race has ever seen, and who are always plotting something behind the scenes. Yeah, the aboleths really crank up the Lovecraft elements. Actually, between the mind flayers, the flumphs and the aboleths, even the most oldschool D&D covered quite a few essential Lovecraftian bases. The flayers are your corrupt yet still recognizable humanoids who can be considered truly evil, the flumphs are benevolent-yet-bizarre guardians who know more than you, and the aboleths are the truly unknowable, sinister intellects. The fact that they can barely function on land honestly only adds to that, IMO. They're inherently difficult for a party to reach, and they offer some nice underwater adventure seeds. Not enough adventures go underwater. There's this perception that the ocean is bad for storytelling because so many writers lack the creativity to make it work. I wanna run an underwater adventure now. Beholder - Icon of icons! THE D&D monster! The beholder! Paranoid, jumpy, always five steps ahead and twenty steps perpendicular! Beholds are fun in just about every way. Between their wacky, diverse designs, their elaborate lairs, their eccentric personalities, their bizarre powers, you're never gonna run out of fun with beholders. Remorhaz - It's always been a thing that bothered me with environment-based monsters. Why does the ice monster who lives in the cold use ice as a weapon? Aren't most of the things it encounters going to be resistant to the cold? Sure, a cone of cold will still kill a polar bear, but a lot of the monsters in the tundra are outright immune to cold. A while dragon's not going to get much use out of its breath weapon fighting frost worms and frost giants. That's one reason the remorhaz sticks out to be. We have an icy tundra beast whose insides are a scorching furnace, which it can intensify and weaponize as it sees fit. Which also conveniently explains why its design - a sort of cobra-esque centipede - invokes warm-weather creatures, despite its icy environment. It's a nice subversion of the usual tropes, plus it's just a memorable, cool looking critter to begin with. On a smaller note, the remorhaz feels like a good loophole for Ryla's "no cold weather morphs" rule. Turning into something elementally affiliated with ice is no good, but a non-magical monster that survives the cold by superheating its insides? That seems perfectly viable to me!

Weird Magicks & Where to Find them - Coin Magick (Artem Pecunia), and the best ingredient ever

Hey everyone, this is Fantasia. Let’s stir the cauldron, clear the air, and get to work. Coin Magick, or Artem Pecunia is the Art of Money or the Art of Coins. It is able to be used in all forms of the craft ranging from granny magick, to hoodoo, to energy work, and even things that people might not really consider the Craft that are from cultures outside of those. I've talked about it on my TikTok, @the_fantasia before - which admittedly is going through a slump because I’m focusing on content I like to make instead of content that got me followers to help myself out - but I talked about it before as a mere aspect of magick that grew out of coin collecting, but I didn't really go into depth. I’d like to do that here on Tumblr so that I can teach people about one of the most useful magickal ingredients and “addendums” to Magick I’ve ever found.

It isn't as common as I thought it'd be, and I think I'm the only practitioner I've seen so far which is why I wanted to share this with everyone. If you have any questions on how this works by the end of this article, feel free to ask and feel free to PM me with further questions. I also do spellwork as part of my religious duties, and don’t charge in human currency, so you don’t have to give me your coin ;) But if you have an issue, especially with predators or just you need to know something, I’ll see what I can do but please be aware I have the right to turn down all spellwork and while I may not charge at all there may be a price, such as in energy, or in a sharing of knowledge.

The basic concept of coin magick, or Artem Pecunia, is that each coin is like a book you can read about online, study a bit, or just feel the energy of and pull the magick or energy or “life” of a specific event from into your working. Then, there are year wide correspondences of coins - such as 1945 symbolizing the end of a conflict, the realization of horrors, the coming home of soldiers, and more. This coinage year may be especially useful for Jewish mystics, Jewish witches, Romani, LBGTQ+ witches, black witches, and other oppressed people who practice this in some form due to the strong ties one would have to it. You can use these coins in a wide variety of ways as long as you do it safely.

Coins are connected to specific years and thus that year's entire events, and that means you can pull energy from events that happened all over the world or even in space from that year. Wanna revisit when an astrological event from the 1800s because the next identical one is another 200 years away? If you have the coin, and the skill, go for it. . Coins are little, permanent embodiments of magick that don't have to be sacrificed for you to access the energies unless you want to MAKE that sacrifice.

It is one of the best ingredients to use, because you can access a "portal" to the energies of a coin and go into the big wide world back in 1970 to when John Blankenbaker invented the PC and harness the divine inspiration granted to him for, say, technomancy, chaos magick, or to invoke the Muses or a number of deities for some of that divine inspiration juice. A lot is possible, because this energy forms an ingredient that can affect the outcome of a spell, fuel it, and simultaneously provide just the right "flavoring" for a spell that might be to write code into writing a code that DOES stuff. Commemorative and Anniversary coins have a special place in that they can both celebrate, mourn, or represent, are often a minted, usabld currency, and hold a variety of energies attached to them. Charging them with the energies they're attached to to reach the point of a period coin is a good idea, however.

Is the energy subjective, or objective?: The answer honestly just depends. A nootse might see 1945 differently from you, but the overwhelming might of Jewish ancestors sets the tone of a penny from that year. Likewise, a anarchocommunist might see 1776 differently from a democratic socialist, and they'd see a coin from that year OR commemorating that year wildly differently.

The secret gift in in this? Those with merit might notice energy manipulation, especially the harnessing of energy through coins by locking into energy through them, is going to get easier for them and they should develop that skill by simply imagining a second body reaching into a coin near a spell they're doing, pulling the energy they need from the year it was minted or that it commemorates, & then pulling it into the spell.

So, rummage through your cabinets, find your spare change, and get a collection going to try to get all the years of coins in your country for your ingredients, and then try to see how this turns out. In a part two I would write about a ore extensive overview of coins, ranging from sacrificing them, to further correspondences on the coins like the material of a penny in 2021 versus that in 1998 versus that in 1970 versus that in 1921 and how materials of coins, their nation of origin, and even their specific grading and how you treat them can play into their power. A little hint is that a collected, cherished coin bought from someone who collects them as a life long hobby miiiight hit a LOT different than some wheat penny you found on the ground 5 years ago, shoved into a cabinet because you thought it was important, and then subsequently left is behind. I might even design a spell for you guys if the reaction to this is good enough. It might include some fruit and some pennies or other small mintings, so I’m very excited to see how this go. Dawnfall has frankly an insanely wonderful setting for a romance game. Tell me about the aliens, the pirates, the ghosts, and the alien-pirate-ghosts.

Hi there! I’m so glad you think this sounds fun! Yeah, Dawnfall is weird as heck, and that’s one of the things I love about this story. It’s weird in a way I don’t think we’ve seen much of before. I really just tried to put in everything I find fun or interesting, and that I’ve always wanted to write. Dawnfall started out as a total brain-candy project, and runs on pure Rule of Cool. Pirates? Yes. Magic? Yes. A slice of cyberpunk? Hell yes. Eerie ghosts and faerie-tale influences and memory-sharing potions? Giant bird people? The power of rock n’roll? Yes, yes, yes.

And also everybody’s dateable, and in a couple cases, dating each other. We weave a tangled web, but I think it’s a pretty badass and spectacular web.

You seem to really neatly straddle the genre fence here with a romance and sci-fi/fantasy. What was challenging about cramming all of that into one game?

Thank you so much for saying that. I’ve always adored SFF, and there’s so much in this genre-collection, so many extremes and concepts and contrasting colors, that I couldn’t limit myself to picking just one to play with. This weird game-book is kind of a love letter to fantasy and science fiction and haunted house stories and cyberpunk adventures—I thought a lot about the Disney movie Treasure Planet for its genre-blending beauty, and the Bioware game Mass Effect for its array of fascinating, multidimensional alien cuties to interact with and date… and then turned it up to eleven.

I guess you’d expect the challenge to be in making it all fit together/be “believable,” but I kind of threw that out the window. I don’t expect anyone to find it ‘realistic’ (setting-wise anyway; I tried to make every character ring true of course), and I don’t really care if someone thinks it’s silly, or doesn’t take it seriously. It is silly in a lot of ways. DAWNFALL is a giant ridiculous queer space magic pirate adventure, and the only goal is fun. If you have fun, I’ve done my job, and there should be something fun in here for everyone.

Did you have a favorite NPC you enjoyed writing most?

Honestly I love them all so much in different ways, and I know them so well by now it’s really second nature. Their voices come so easily and they’re all so much fun. The Queen’s swagger is awesome though, and her mental voice/mannerisms probably come through especially clearly. I love Zenith’s vulnerable moments when xie lets xir guard down and lets go of the need to entertain or please. I love Averis’s journey and growth from cute wibbly nerd to a confident swashbuckler (who is also still a cute wibbly nerd). I love how deeply Oz feels, how strongly he loves and remembers and honors memory, and how unafraid he is to show softness and warmth. And I love a certain spoilery ghost-babe and how they’re so full of joy at the beauty of life.

I do want to give special mention to Aeon, though. This is a story about connection, and I wanted to show that sibling bonds are every bit as important and strong as romantic or any other. I also wanted to show a complex, multidimensional antagonist figure who holds heartbreaking secrets along with authority, and is genuinely trying to do what she thinks is the best thing, and wants what’s best for you, the PC, even if you might not always agree. Her balance between being so emotionally guarded and determined and unyielding, while hopefully being extremely easy to read and tell what she wants and fears and loves—spoiler: you; she loves you!—was a challenge I hope I pull off.

…Also I enjoy any time Vyranix gets his pompous feathered ass handed to him. I think we all know a Vyranix, or at least of one, and it’s always fun to take them down, even in fantasy.

Who would you be romancing as a player?

I’m gonna say “everyone,” and here it won’t actually be cheating, because you can romance everyone! At once! In varying degrees/relationship dynamics and attractions. You don’t see a lot of polyamory-friendly games or books or anything really, and this is an incredibly important thing for me. The second I got the idea for Dawnfall I knew it had to let players romance anyone they wanted and show polyamory in a realistic, healthy light. I’m also a-spec (asexual and aromantic), and having not just good representation but being actively included and welcomed and celebrated in fiction is so huge too.

Dawnfall is a romance of course, being part of Heart’s Choice, but one of the single most vital elements for me is making it inclusive for aromantic and asexual players and player-characters. Essentially, I wanted to write a romance that didn’t penalize players for not experiencing the attractions the way we’re otherwise expected or required—and I’m so grateful that my amazing editors and community not only accepted but supported everything I was trying to do here. (It’s so refreshing not to have to fight for inclusion and freedom. It shouldn’t be, but it is.)

And that’s where the concept of “Heart-Stars” and “Same-Feathers” came from. I’ve never seen anything honor queerplatonic relationships like I’m trying to do here, and I want everyone, of every sexuality and attraction, to feel like they have a place here and can experience this adventure without limits. And I wanted to show that it’s a very normal thing, hence this being the same for the human characters as well as alien. (One of the nonbinary characters being human is also no mistake. I love me some wild alien genders, but there are tons of awesome nonbinary humans too!)

…That being said, I think I gave Averis most of my anxiety-issues, and would really just like to curl up with Oz and watch The Great British Bake-Off. That sounds like a perfect night in my books.

What were some of the things you found surprising about the game-writing process?

Coding was definitely the biggest learning curve. I’d never coded anything before in my life, and it’s such a new skillset to learn, entirely different from any kind of writing I’ve ever done. Sometimes it felt rewriting my brain, which did not at all do this intuitively—and also sometimes like I bit off much more than I could chew (first game ever being not only a huge piece of interactive fiction, but a polyamorous romance with aro and ace possibilities, and so many more variables than expected!), but it’s been worth it. Entirely. If my writing makes anyone feel seen and accepted and invited to have fun as they are, it’s worth every bit of struggle.

Also, oddly, interactive fiction is in some ways easier for me than writing a plain old book! Probably because I love AUs so much, and every choice in a game is like writing a tiny AU of the story, so I get to do the same scenes several different ways. My ADHD-brain finds something about this extremely satisfying, most likely because it somehow feels more like multitasking! Several stories in one, and if I like two ideas, I don’t have to pick just one to write!

Honestly though, I think the most surprising part is just being done, and…that I could do this at all. It was so huge, and took so long, and I learned so much, and every day I’m just kind of going “who the hell am I?” about doing all of this. I’m proud of it. I did a cool thing. And trying to get better at saying that.

And, what are you working on now?

I always have about 8 active projects going at once (which shouldn’t come as a surprise after last question!), but my next interactive fiction game is with Tales/Fable Labs! It’s shaping up to be a Dawnfall-sized project, but a little faster-moving and action-y.

It’s called Every Beat Belongs To You, and it’s a romantic thriller that feels like Twin Peaks meets Mr. Robot, with a smattering of Repo: The Genetic Opera. A creepy Pacific Northwest town with a secret (and a rash of ritualized murders), a super-slick medical research company whose flagship product is a 100% perfect synthetic heart, a mysterious new-age group, and a sister who went missing just before discovering how it’s all connected. Also five simultaneously-dateable (including ace and aro ships!) cuties of varying genders! Who will you trust with your heart?

I’m very excited about Everybeat, which should be just as queer, polyam, exciting, and weird as all my stuff! Aside from that, I’m working on Stake Sauce Book 2, its companion f/f vampire series Death Masquerade, and Chameleon Moon Book 3. I’m not always working…sometimes there are videogames, and sleep. But I really hope to have a lot more fun things to share soon!

Oh, and depending on how this weird, fun thing goes, I do have some ideas for prequel Dawnfall stories; maybe games, maybe books, but the ideas are there. The world—worlds, really—is so huge, and I’m not done playing in it yet! I also have some character art drawn, and I want to do a lot more of them. It’s another way to show love.

About the Character - Ashe of Dalmasca

TWO HEADCANONS YOU HAVE FOR YOUR CHARACTER:

[ Twinthings ]

Most twins have some sort of innate bond, particularly monozygotic and bi-monozygotic (there’s a third, yet unnamed type of twin science is looking into, so I gave it a name, your welcome science), but the bond shared between Ashe and Rel exists on a deep and complex aetheric level. The existence of such has manifested several times over the course of the Manasse Twins lives.

While minor changes to her aetheric configuration, such as colouration changes or ‘hiding’ her freckles, don’t affect her twin all that much, major changes to Ashe’s aetheric configuration - like longer-term aetheric dispersal - do have an impact on Rel.

Despite being in their 40s, Rel looks remarkably young, though not quite as young as Ashe does. He’s only just starting to get his first grey hairs, and there aren’t many of them. This discrepancy stems from the handful of times that Ashe's aether has shattered, for a total of somewhere around 7 - 10 years of ‘missing’ time; while she looks barely 30, Rel looks to be in his mid-30s or so.

Major alterations to their forms brought about by things like injury also reflect from one twin to the other, to varying degrees. While Rel’s hands were nearly destroyed during the battle at Nalbina Fortress, his sister frequently has arthritis-like symptoms in her hands, particularly within the palms, which is where most of the damage to Rel’s hands occurred. And while his scar has faded quite a bit more than hers, the scar across the bridge of Ashe’s nose is from an injury her brother suffered not long after Nalbina.

There’s quite a number of additional scientific and anecdotal things involving twins that I’ve as headcanons for the Manasse Twins, but the above is the most modified version of such.

[ Aetherology as Particle Physics Science ]

As much as people baulk upon the initial hearing of this phrase, the game has plenty to support the idea that a lot of aetherology has roots in quantum and particle physics. The most notable being the way the aetheryte systems and other forms of teleportation are described/how they work.

The specifics of Ashe’s Echo gift are all based on this concept, built on the same sort of idea as the Sphere Rote system of Mage: the Ascension. The applications of this are only limited by the person’s imagination and their ability to think on their feet - much like on the fly Rote casting in MtA, which I got pretty good at (I also dodged Paradox like a champ, but that’s for another post).

However, much like MtA’s Sphere system, there are a number of things that can limit how much or how fantastical Ashe’s use of this can be. While it’s not quite like the Paradox system, there’s a similar underlying concept. There’s checks and balances on this, even though they weren’t all that clear near the beginning of playing Ashe, due to having to frequently make the Storyteller call of removing the limiters to deal with certain RP situations.

Underpinning all of this is Ashe’s core Echo gift - the ability to ‘see’ aether in its rawest forms. Much like Neo in the Matrix, the minutiae structure of aether is plain to her, though how it’s actually seen is more like the colour/shade overlays of the Miraluka sight in KotOR.

THREE THINGS THAT YOUR CHARACTER LIKES DOING IN THEIR FREE TIME:

Cooking - While she’s always been a capable enough cook, after spending time learning the more granular layers of the art from Elric, the Roegadyn chef employed by the Knight-Captain, cooking has become something that is relaxing, even though she’s constantly challenging her skill level with new styles, techniques, and recipes.

Writing - Although she’s thus far only published translated works since arriving in Eorzea, Ashe writes frequently. Sometimes it’s just updating her journal (though I’m shite at that since a couple of months after starting the character), or working on writing the modern history of the Kingdom, or working on the occasional piece of fiction. Aside from long-form novella writing, she’s got some skill with poetry and prose and can write song lyrics, when such a fancy strikes her.

Dancing - Most make the mistake of thinking that Ashe learned how to dance due to her family’s station prior to the invasion, however, they would be mistaken. Ashe loves dancing, having learned and taught herself myriad of different styles and techniques, as well as creating something of a fusion style with all she knows. Though she doesn’t get to dance often, she does really enjoy such.

SEVEN PEOPLE THAT YOUR CHARACTER LOVES/LIKES/RESPECTS**:

[ I. Her Knight ]

There will always be a soft spot in Ashe’s heart for the squire that had been assigned to guard her when she was a child. No matter the trouble she got up to, no matter how well hidden she was, he’d always find her, being sure to make her smile and laugh before guiding her home.

Despite the passing of decades, the man the squire became ultimately didn’t fail in keeping the promise he made to her when they were but children - that he would always find her. Though the passage of time has greatly changed him, and though their paths have since parted, she’ll always care about him, and always - though sometimes begrudgingly - respect him.

[ II. Her Starlight ]

If someone had told her how important he’d become, how integral a part of her life he’d be, the day she met Jurien, she would have laughed and brushed their words aside.

Perhaps it’s as much of a surprise to her as it is to everyone else that she and Jurien have become something far more than anyone ever imagined. After everything that had come to pass between herself and her Knight, the last thing Ashe was looking for was something that lay between philia, ludus, and pragma***.

Despite the fact their marriage was something of an accident, she can’t bring herself to take off the ring from their eternal bonding ceremony; thus far, he’s given her no reason to want to, and she’s hoping he never will.

[ III. The Doctor ]

The level-headed nature of this Raen, along with his penchant for tea and the higher sciences, led to Ashe coming to respect and trust Doctor Briggs in short order after their first meeting. Before she began her rapid trips between Dalmasca and Eorzea, she considered him something akin to her royal physician, even though she knew he’d never enjoy such an unforgiving position amid the court.

[ IV. The Violet Mage ]

Despite initial uneasiness between the two, Ashe developed a healthy respect for Galtara during her few moons with the Desert Sapphire Company. The woman’s passion for knowledge, both practical and theoretical, gave the Mage something of a foot in the door with Ashe. Her capability as a combatant, as well as her quiet method of leadership, also garnered respect from the Dalmascan.

[ V. The Axe-Maiden ]

While there is still much Ashe doesn’t know about J’veda, what she has seen from the Seeker has earned the woman an odd sort of respect from Ashe, one that’s quite unique to Veda.

The warrior’s confidence with her feelings, stating her mind, and particularly her body and sensuality - while sometimes overwhelming - creates something of longing respect for the Seeker. Ashe would very much so like to be as carefree and confident about such things, but always feels the grip of noblesse oblige and the expectations of her behaviour it places upon her.

[ VI. The Gilded Lily ]

Although they’ve not interacted all that often, soft and quiet respect has been growing for the Raen. While initially, she seemed far too naive and far too shy, Ashe has realised there’s more to Mai than she initially expected, finding her wide-eyed selflessness to be incredibly endearing.

[ VII. The Playwrite ]

Despite the fact that he’s a Garlean pureblood, she has nothing but respect and admiration for Jenomis cen Lexentale. His love for her kingdom and the kingdom that came before it, coupled with his passionate sacrifices have deeply touched Ashe, and given her hope for the Garlean people.

With her understanding of auracite, knowledge of the Lucavi, and the geography of Dalmasca, Ashe became something of a fixture within the group attempting to prove the writings passed down within the Lexentale’s family correct. The journey from a return to Rabanastre, to the Lighthouse of Ridorana, and finally deep within the Golmore Jungle to discover the strangely familiar Orbonne Monastery has been something she’s quite thankful to have experienced.

For some time, she’s been working on both a written adaptation of Lexentale’s precious artefact known as the Durai Papers and an adaptation of the play he’s created from the Zodiac Braves myth that’s more palatable to foreigners with no background to the story - primarily, Eorzeans.

TWO THINGS YOUR CHARACTER REGRETS:

Her time as a conscript within the Garlean Military.

ANNOTATIONS

* - I made the mistake of not hauling down my line of succession information off my SCA document backup before working out the Manasse family’s place in the nobility and lineages. As it turns out, it all put Ashe into the line of succession, and given the death toll in Dalmasca, she’s now fairly near the top of such. Until there are more clarifications on the leader of Lente’s Tears, and/or perhaps the B’nargin twins’ life before the Garlean invasion, it leaves her within the top 5.

I considered retconning it but got encouragement to keep it, and so I did. It should be noted, that unless something is really super wacky with the Dalmascan story that’s unfolding, Ashe is so not going to become the rule of Dalmasca - and even then, I’d feel awkward as hell and probably not. XD

** - Choosing just seven people was rough because there’s more than that many people that Ashe gets along with, or has respect for while saving space for some of the NPCs she deals with. In the end, I picked just one NPC, even though there are three or four who fit the bill.

Please don’t feel like your character isn’t important to Ashe if they’re not mentioned in this list. All of Ashe’s friends and colleagues are important and cherished by her - and by me.

*** - Anyone who knows me has heard me bitch about how terrible a language English is, in so much as the fact that we have words that have myriad and varying meanings, which leads to far more confusion than necessary. Often, when expressing some sort of ‘love’, I will revert to the 7 Loves created by the ancient Greeks. Because while they still don’t cover the various different types and levels of love, they do a hell of a lot better job of it than English could ever hope to.

Also, as English is nigh a requirement in this world, I prefer the Queen’s English. Deal with it.

**** - Most of my characters have this phobia because my RL arachniphobia is so bad, I can’t even fake that it doesn’t exist for role play fun times.

We actually met around 15 years ago when I first started going to clubs, as well working together here at NOON to organise parties, an artists that I admire; I have invited Taichi aka RHy-s. Taichi (T): Good evening K: Today, I’d like to interview Taichi regarding his performances of course, but also about his music production and recent activities. Oh and, Taichi, you’re the manager of NOON, correct? T: At the moment, although NOON is a nightclub in the night time, but there’s been efforts to open this place as a CAFE during the day. I manage the space in the evenings; when it turns into a nightclub, bookings for live events and managing the bar area. So yeah, you could say I’m the manager for the night time. K: I see. I’m guessing you’re interacting and meeting with a lot of local artists, as well as contributing to parties with variety of genres, so it’d be great if I could ask you about the Osaka music scene later on. For now, if you could explain briefly the equipment you’re going to use for LIVE show tonight, but I notice you don’t have your laptop with you? T: I went through a period of using a laptop, but I found that it was troublesome; in that there were probability that the songs would stop playing all of a sudden, I feel like the risks are too high to be using it for LIVE performances. Since it’ll be the end if the PC breaks down. Other than that, I mainly use two Electribe from KORG; the SX and MX. It’s three generation prior to the newest versions with vacuum tubes. I use SX as a main to create beats and put filters on the drums. With MX, I hardly hit the drums, but instead, I use the feature which allows you to produce 5 different synths to create that bass and upper sounds. I do use some sampler sounds from the SX, for example putting in speeches from films. Oh and, sampler using ROLAND SP-404; I don’t use the pre-recorded samples, but I record upper sounds without beats at home, then incorporate it in here and I use that a lot. K: Do you also record environmental sounds? T: oh yeah yeah, I remember last year when a massive typhoon hit OSAKA, I recorded downstairs at my apartment, and it had that `the end of the world` kind of sounds that I use a lot when playing LIVE. T: Sounds mad doesn’t it? haha Cranes nearby was swaying and made a melodic sound... I took my iPhone outside to record it... So yeah, I use SP-404 for things like this. Also I bought the ROLAND SPACE ECHO RE-20 recently, and I use it a lot; its pretty good for how it decays the songs, and by using it, I feel like it puts together the sound nicely. K: I see. Just started career using TAICH as his artist name for DJing, today I would like him to perform live as RHy-s. The longest was 90 minutes, but it gave me time to think haha K: For real! When I watch the set right in front of you, you’re always moving your hands and I do think it requires skills; but speaking of tunes, if you played them like in the first half, I reckon you could reach 2 hours?

Yeah I could do it, if the concept of the LIVE show was like you said, more like techno,dancey sounds. When I play for longer though, I’d have to assemble tunes to some extent, so I feel like the improvisation vibes will be diminished.

Yeah, since you’re playing in real time.

Fundamentally, There’s the sequences I already made, and use them to take it in and out or change them. Or even remake them.

Are you committed to the style of LIVE shows?

For sure!

At first, I wanted to make tunes that I’m 100% satisfied with, a tune where I know its good whenever I listened back to it, for my own sake.

But from then, I changed my views when I was performing live in front of crowd and organizing parties like DEPTH at NOON.It really influenced me through the party style and LIVE sets.

At that time,in heads and IDM locality, There were artists who made completed sick tunes that were played on the LIVE set performances. I also saw a lot of LIVE sets of artists abroad, but even if it was one of my favorite artist, how it just finished with just performing already composed tune on their laptops didn't feel right; I almost felt disappointed that I watched their live performances haha

LIVE sets really is all about experience. It’s important for audience to enjoy the good music, but there has to be that element of impact of stimulation on the audience.

By the way, the LIVE set that left the most impression for me is Ceephax Acid Crew.

It was like listening to a hard core band’s live. I would always want to see his LIVE sets.

I personally like how your LIVE set has that element of nervousness. There’s always that risk of making mistake, but there’s things that can only happen and be experienced in that space and time.

Hmm, its in that moment you know, that's why I wouldn’t want it to be recorded sometimes. But I think it would be interesting for those listening to the live set.

I think I can create the atmosphere of a sense of live to a certain extent.

The reason I started to produce dance track was when custom law of ‘dancing is prohibited’ was set. So I opposed by just creating dance tracks haha

Till then I was only focused on music that can blow minds.

So yeah, then that influenced the counter movement of dancing at bars, not just dance floor of clubs; left an impression not just on the environment but the production side too.

So I see, music production is influenced and inspiration are born from the environment too then.

A bit like the emotions trigger the production of tunes…

This is just my personal impression, but Taichi you’re usually sociable person, I just don't hear that side of your character in the music. I sense more darkness, anger and sadness.

When I’m working at NOON, from the external perspective, I feel like I have to be that person with responsibilities, and I am like that. But when its music related, I feel like I can do anything and its liberating; I can deliver a message about my thoughts and what I like through music.

How is your music production recently?

Not really sampling, but I have been using 1 bar patterns a lot recently.

I don't build up on that really.

Tunes I’ve produced before are all because there were deadlines for releases and what not, then there’s that sense of “I have to”, so then I finally finish making a tune.

When I have bookings, I always want to try out something new, so that gives me a reason to produce tunes.

Otherwise, when I feel real anger and sadness that can’t be expressed, I don't feel like producing tunes when I’m having a good time.

I can also escape reality for a bit when I’m producing music.

There seems to be some similarity with art and sports; allowing yourself to release them strong emotions through activity and feel refreshed after you know.

I know you buy quite a lot of vinyls; do you get influences and inspiration from other artists?

I see you dancing at other clubs and I know you go to other places other than NOON.

While on the job, there’s been times where I go out and have fun, I touch upon music that aren’t related to genres, but when I feel like producing tunes is when I’m listening to shit music haha

Isn’t that also anger though? Haha

You’re not wrong, anger does drive me to produce music. That's why I end up producing dark and scary music haha

When its from feeling happy, I use SP-404 to make a story-like snippets and save them like a diary, then I add on beats to that.

I see.

I heard that you were on the news years ago for someone reporting you for lost in the mountains, so does you’re hobby of mountain climbing influence your music production?

Actually yeah! It does! When I went mountain climbing in Canada. I’m gonna listen to it before the last half of the LIVE!

Known to only those who know, but it's a song I produced after I climbed a mountain with a DJ called Return Trip in Canada.

I don't remember it clearly, but Takaaai, a legendary member from the DEPTH was there, and I think I borrowed his NODE LEAD to make the tune.

The sounds of footsteps, rain and lightning while mountain climbing is incorporated into the tune too.

That time too, I was climbing without any plans, I challenged snowy paths and was faced with serious situations; really made me think how small human were and the greatness of nature.

It was that time, that feeling of soul beating by the nature which made it into this song,haha.

The song was a great acclaim by Return Trip too, I wonder how he’s doing…

So Taichi, you’re also organizing new parties as well as DJing, right?

Now, I’ve been doing parties called “moltal”, here at NOON, on a Thursday, once a month on a weekday.

There’s a hall with a decent sound system, but the party is based around the bar area with simply a DJ booth.

The concept is to have fun freely, not all about listening to the DJ or geeked out by the music.

Musically, we don’t really care too much about the genres either.

You’re close to the DJ booth anyway.

About the combination of yourself and guest artists, what kind of artists do you welcome?

Usually, those I see a lot at the club and get along well with.

There’s others that are willing to play and happily accept my offer.

I’m not all about the technique or the genre, but if their attitude and mindset are similar to mine, and can have fun with, then anyone is welcome.

Osaka scene is narrow, and even though you know their name and their face, there’s not much contact. Sounds fun if the party is open to whoever then you know.

When I started to go to clubs and parties ten years ago, there was an impression that genres didn't really matter; parties were put together by booking artists that varied in genres.

I wonder when that concept started to disappear…

Any thoughts on the Osaka clubbing scene now?

There are parts that I do like and don't like, but I’d like to make as many connection as possible. Without putting limitation on the genres to have fun.

You are hosting the other event that is held irregularly?

Yeah, “ECMN” short for ECM Night, which derived from a German Jazz label ECM established by Manfred Eicher; I was really into the ECM sounds, but realilsed that many people actually know the label ECM when I spoke to them about it.

Their artwork is unique, and the music has a vibe that can really be called ECM sound, really good.

Then, I was bored of listening to dance music, so MITSUKI, COTA, TSUTOMU and I started an event so we can listen to ECM in decent environment.

At the same time, I was watching a film at home while playing ECM music.When I switch tracks like DJing,it was like making soundtrack for films but ECM sound.It was quite fun, so we decided to do this at the club, I think haha

We just hung a screen on the stage and projected films, the DJs produced soundtracks in real time behind the screen, can even control the sound of the film; that was the format.

The floor had sofas haha

This year marks the 50th anniversary, so we should definitely do an EMC Night!

一時期は使ってた時もあるけど、ラップトップはトラブルで音が止まっちゃう可能性があってLiveメインで活動する身としてはリスクが高い、PCが止まっちゃうと終わってしまうので。。他はメインにKORGのElectribe2台、SXとMXを使っています。これは真空管の入ってる最新のから三世代くらい前のやつ。 SXでメインのビートを作ってドラムにフィルターをかけたりして、 MXではビートをほとんど打たず、代わりにシンセが５本出せる特徴を使って上音やベースを出してます。 SXのサンプラーも少しだけ使ってる。映画のセリフとか入れたりして。あとはROLAND SP-404のサンプラー。打ち込みには使わず、これは家で録ったビートの無い展開のある上音なんかをここに入れてたくさん入れてます。 K: 環境音とか録ったりしない？ T: あーそうそう、去年大阪にすごい大きな台風がきた時に自宅マンションの下で録ったこの世の終わりみたいな音があるんやけど、これはマジで頻繁にライブで使ってるね。聞いてみましょうか。 -00:15:00 T: やばくない？笑この近所のクレーンが揺れてるとこからなってるメロディーみたいなんが。。。 i-phone持って外出て録ったね。。まーSP-404はそんな使い方で、あとは最近買ったROLAND まーそういう感じのコンセプトでやりませんかって話があれば出来なくも無いけど。長時間やるとなるとある程度組んでやる必要があるので、インプロ感はちょっとなくなるかな。 K: リアルタイムで打ってるからね。 T: まー基本的なのは作ってるのもあってそれの抜き差し、打ち替えとかもあるけどね。弾き直したりとか。 K: このライブスタイルに対するこだわりやっぱり強い？ T: あるね！最初期は自分が100%納得のいく完成された曲を作りたいと思ってて、いつ聞いてもいい曲だと自分で思える、自分のための。そっからNOONでオーガナイズしてたDEPTHってパーティーの影響やライブで人前でやるってのもあって変わっていった。当時はヘッズやIDM界隈でラップト��プで完成された超かっこいい曲を披露するライブパフォーマンスが多くて、 NOONで働いてたこともあって海外のアーティストのライブもたくさん見たけど、好きなアーティストでもラップトップで最高の曲を披露して終わりっていう、、どーも上がり切らないというか。ライブ見るんじゃなかった、、って残念な気持ちになって笑ライブはやっぱり体感型でないといけないと思ったね。いい音楽を聴かせることも大切だけど、ライブにはもっと刺激的な要素が必要だと。配信してる今も現場で聞くのと、家で聞くのとでは環境が違うだけで変わってくるし。因みに印象に残ってるライブはCeephax Acid Crewのライブ。曲のどこがかっこいいということじゃなくて、ハードコアバンドのライブ聞いてるみたいやった。彼のライブは毎回見たいと思う。 K: 僕は太一君のライブは緊張感がある好き。ミスる可能性も常もあるけどその場でしか出せない展開や感覚があるとこ。 T: うーん、まーその場の思いつきやから記録とかに残っては欲しくはないけど笑　ライブとしては聞いてる人は面白いかなって思う。現場の空気感を出せてるかなっと。あとダンストラックを作るきっかけになったのは風営法によって"踊ってはいけない"ってことになったことが大きい。じゃあ踊れる曲しか作りませんっという方向になった笑　それまではぶっ飛べる音楽しか意識していなかったけど。。そーそれで当時はその影響でクラブのフロアじゃなくてバーとか、今まで踊る場所じゃなかったとこで踊って遊ぶカウンター的な動きや環境も制作面での刺激になったね。 K: 楽曲制作には周りの環境なんかもインスピレーションになってるというわけですね。感情が制作活動を掻き立てるという、、個人的な印象だけど、太一君は普段すごく社交的だけど音楽はそんな感じには聞こえにくい。暗黒の闇と怒り、悲しみって感じ。 T: NOONで働いてる時なんかは対外的には立場上ちゃんとしないといけないという気持ちもあるし、そんな感じだけど、音楽に関しては何をやっても許されるし解放される、自分の好きなことや思いを音楽を通して伝えることもできるんじゃないかと。 K: 最近の音楽制作はどうですか？ T: サンプルというか1小節のパターンはめちゃくちゃ作ってる。それを曲に組み立てることはあまりやってない。これまで出来た曲は、リリースの話や締め切りなんかがあって、そーゆーのがあるとなんとしてでもという気持ちになってなんとか作り上げるって感じ。ブッキングが決まった時なんかは新しいことやりたくなるので、曲作りのきっかけになったり。他はやっぱり自分の怒りや悲しみなんかの感情の起伏が大きい時、楽しい時はあんまりそういう気にならない。音楽制作を通して現実逃避になってることはあると思う。アートやスポーツも似たようなとこあるかもしれないけど、そういう感情を行動で吐き出してスッキリするっていう。 K: レコードも結構買ってるみたいだけど、他のアーティストから影響を受けたり、触発されるみたいなことはあんまりない？太一君はいろんなとこ行って、他のクラブでも踊ってるとこよく見るけど笑 T: 仕事上いろんなとこで遊ぶ機会があって、ジャンル関係なくいろんな音楽に触れるけど、曲を作りたいって気持ちになる時はめちゃダサい音楽聴いてる時だけ笑 K: それも怒りからなんじゃ笑 T: 怒りが制作の原動力となってることは間違いない。だからこんな怖い曲になる笑楽しさきっかけでは、SP-404にネタ的なのを日記みたいにバンバン保存していってて、そこにビート乗っけたり。ダークなだけではないのよ。 K: なるほど。昔遭難届け出されてニュースに出たって聞いたけど笑、趣味の山登りも制作に関わってくることもある？ T: あっ！ある！カナダに山登りいった時の。ちょっと後半のライブの前に一回これ聴いてみよ！これは知る人ぞ知るReturnTripというDJと昔カナダで登山して帰って来た時に作った曲です。 -01:18:35 -01:20:30 T: こんな感じです。これははっきり覚えてないけど、TakaaakiっていうDEPTH伝説のメンバーがいて、多分彼にNODE LEADを借りて、それを使って弾いたと思う。登山途中の足音とか、雷とか雨降ってたのでその音とかも入ってます。その時も相変わらず無計画で登っていて、スニーカーで雪山に挑んだりして大変な目に遭って、自然の偉大さ人間の小ささを体感しましたね。その時の自然にぶちのめされた感覚を曲にした感じですね笑　ReturnTripにも大絶賛していただいて。元気にしてるかな笑 K: 7. Are your OCs part of any story or stories? Most of them are part of a world that could be a story. Should be a story. They’re usually grouped up such as Leila, Ryan, Elek, Aiolia and few other belong to one, while Elinor, Sigrun, Jahan belong to another. However, honestly speaking, I’ve only written in story-specific way for Leila and Elinor + people around her. But for Elinor I’ve written a lot and maybe one day she will be part of actual, consistent, book style story.

8. Do you RP as any of your OCs? If you do, introduce one of your RP OCs here! …. They’re all RP OCs. 99% of them are RP OCs. Made for specific RPs or in hopes they will get RP’d. Maybe the only exception is Genie and Sammy at this point, as I created Genie out of inspiration on a whim, with no intention to RPing her and I’ve been crafting sort of world around her with a good friend while actively not RPing her. Sammy sort of pranced into this world along, in similar fashion. But generally, they are all RP OCs.

17. Any OC OTPs? Since they’re pretty much all RP OCs, I sure as heck have OTPs but they involve OCs of other people, such as main OTP of Elinor (which has a legit ship name you guys). But I do also ship her with Jahan, both just with him and in a Poly relationship with a friend’s oc, but 1 on 1, their relationship is doomed to be him kind of unrequited crushing on her indefinitely. It’s not a love triangle in story because… There is something about him that marks him off the list of potential her life-partner list. She cannot overcome it just as much he cannot change this about himself. They’re just not meant to last on their own.

Malachy and Larry also have been in past relationship or more like he tried to date her, but that didn’t go well because she has commitment issues. Big Time.

Elek and Aiolia is… Elek kind of still hasn’t told me if he returns Aiolia’s feelings or not. Either way, he’s a noble dumbass who is probably going to die so he would not get involved with her easily anyway.

Leila, in concept, might have an OTP, but it’s the sort of tragic, they die in each other’s arms sorta OTP. I legitimately had dream about this and woke up sobbing. That’s how this OTP was created.

18. Any OC crackships? Elinor/Jahan frankly qualifies more as this than previous question. It’s a ship that cannot sail without another person on board and even then, it’s… just a crackship compared to main OTP I have. Also there’s a bunch that involve friend’s OCs, again.

Genie/Sammy is probably the crackiest concept that crossed my mind just now because I was trying all these mishmashes, lmao. Like, nope. Nevermind. It just doesn’t work. Unless as best aro/ace buddies platonically forever together.

20. Do any of your OCs sing? If they sing, care to share more details (headcanon voice, what kind of songs they like etc)?

I imagine whole bunch of them do, but I’ve honestly have never gone as far as to picture what they sound like. I just… have never been able to match any voice to them, sadly. As for music taste, they all have their own taste and it’s usually about 25% of music I enjoy. Or more. Leila is definitely into symphonic metal and stuff like Emilie Autumn, the real heavy, lyric powerful songs. Genie enjoys softer music, but will also love a good metal song. Is into kpop and not ashamed, but like, not really absurd about it. (Or so she says.) And so on and on.

35. Any sibling characters?

A lot. Growing up I realized I love playing 2 characters in same story and more often than not, they ended up being siblings which, I think, was my attempt to live out my fantasy what siblings should be like - bickering but supporting each other, etc. Unfortunately, only few made the list of my mentioned ones tonight, but Iantha’s and Saien’s whole plot revolves around them being siblings. (And they’re twins, for bonus points.) Somnia and Nocturne have a similar thing going on.

Looking at these again I feel same ecstatic joy as I did when I received them, it still seems beyond amazing that someone loves them enough to draw them.

44. Something you like about your OCs in general

That they’re independent little fuckers that give me grief with their choices but also grow and develop in most magnificent, unexpected ways. That they’re all complex and often actually pretty mean, but not beyond learning and trying to heal. That most of them are infinitely more strong than I am.

My Pride, My Joy, My love: The “Original Character” Trend

I remember when I was enjoying my life as a Middle schooler (over here we call it grade 6) I enjoyed a lot of the internet during that time. I became a fan of Minecraft and enjoyed all the modern cartoons at the time. Me and my friends were very into Five Nights at Freddy’s and during that time period is where a lot of good late childhood memories formed for me. All these media has made me into the creative person I am today, despite my career choice of the moment, I’m very proud as an artist. Part of that pride is my creativity to make OCs (Original Characters). Like many other artists growing up to these trends, I would have all these ideas and draw them out in my notebook. Whenever I get home from school, I would finish my assignments just so I have the freetime to play Doll Dress up games to create stories and characters (This was such a highlight of my life tbh and im not ashamed!! DOLL DIVINE MY LOVE!) Getting to play with these games and playing around with MS Paint was my humble beginnings of becoming an artist online (mygash i sound like im famous but im not XD)

A confession, the first time I made my own original characters is when I was still dreaming about playing Minecraft [ yes, I dreamt about playing Minecraft one day because my dad won’t let me play it and we had to buy it heheh silly but I was real ecstatic when I was able to play it on mobile-- but playing it on PC, I was super happy like- this is literally a dream come true for me y’all, I can’t express my happiness ] I would create what my Minecraft skin would look like, I never really told anyone about that. But later on I slowly created a story behind these characters for my own pleasure and fantasy. It feels so wonderful like I’m back to my kid self being in my own world.

This eventually became something I got stuck with until now, creating original characters with their own storylines but never really posting them about it. I made Gemsonas (Steven Universe fan characters), Five Nights at Freddy OCs, Yandere Simulator, and many more until they became their own original thing for me.

I can’t really count how many characters I have made through playing online games but they we’re mostly revolved around my personality and my friends. As I matured I realized how cringey that is hahah I guess I don’t want to look back at my personality back then even though nothing much change hehe. Though I still like how some of the characters I have made reflect what I am and what I wanted to be you know; that goes for almost any character ever made by someone similar to me, a character to reflect them in a way or project something they want to be someday. Nowadays I make characters that reflect more to the stories I create so it would be more fitting for them. My love for Original Character making came from a place where I dream of being famous (who doesn’t dream about that right?) I thought the ideas I have made were unique and at the time not have been thought of. As much as I want to share these ideas there was no where I shared these but between friends and myself, mostly just myself. I tried wattpad but somehow I never got to finish the stories. I tried Deviantart but right when I think I want to post I refuse to because I know the internet is a harsh place and my skills were not as extraordinary like the people I support. So ever since then, as much as I crave the attention, I never really pushed to get it. Instead all these characters I made are for my own pleasure. And I think that’s okay, I did these art for myself and it makes me super happy to come up with ideas and concepts. It shows how alive I am. It also worked in my favor because I improved as an artist too. I’m not the only one who feels this of course but I don’t know, this creative part of me is very strong. I was really happy when I started my Instagram, I don’t have many followers but I don’t care, the internet showed me it’s okay to just share whatever you want. Though I still feel anxious whenever I post, I mean there isn’t anything wrong with the post but what if someone saw it and many more. And like I use the hashtags to get notice but also not too much to get really noticed. I contradict myself a lot with that hahaha but I’m slowly just not caring about it. You can say this trend was my comfort and coping mechanism, I do enjoy self-insert stories and projecting my self into these characters. So far that’s how much I can express my love for doing this trend. The original character trend is still as strong as ever and it’s more developed hahah. I admire those artists that indulge a lot to their characters even without a piece of media to fully express their world. That’s why I still fancy this topic a lot. I can talk about my original characters for a whole week but that sounds super annoying tho no? HAHAHA Anyway I am proud of this part of me and maybe I can express that part of me more soon when I feel it’s right. Right now I’m doing fanart but then it will be fanworks then original stuff. I have a bunch of original content made but it may take a long time to present it well. My love and joy for this is boundless ahahah that’s all I can say Extra: The pics are from my gamer childhood (I am best dress up gamer!!!) and ofc the characters I made throughout that time. Not gonna lie but looking at the old art I made as a gr6 is S U P E R C R I N G E. I want to share more, believe when I say I have TONS of characters but I think I will regret every moment once I scroll my own page in the future HAHAHA.

TLNM Headcanons

This is the first time I’ve actually shared headcanons (and they’re really dumb). These are for the movie just because I’ve been thinking about it a lot, but I have ones for the series if anyone is interested.

Other than Nya and Kai, Cole and Jay have known each other the longest. They used to be neighbours before Jay's parents moved to the outskirts of Ninjago City.

Kai and Nya don't have parents. They both have jobs to be able to afford their apartment, although Kai insists he could just work two jobs so Nya has more time to study and focus on her grades.

Nya and Zane get the best grades out the group, across all of their subjects (the two of them have a friendly competition going whenever big tests come up, which the rest of the group find terrifying). Jay comes next with pretty good grades, especially in science and IT, then there's Cole and Lloyd (they get roughly the same) with middle-ish grades, Cole does best in art and music while Lloyd's better at english and foreign languages. Kai has the worst grades of the bunch (but not bad grades, he just gets Cs mainly), he's better at hands-on subjects like woodwork.

They often have movie nights at their base. Jay likes romance and sci-fi, Cole and Kai enjoy action movies, Lloyd prefers things with deep stories and morals, Nya likes monster movies and horror (she has nerves of steel) while Zane enjoys kung fu movies as well as animated films.

They argue over who had the most fans. It got to the point they did an online poll about it. Turns out Lloyd had the most fans, he was kind of smug about it for weeks.

They have a team fridge which they all keep food in. It used to get raided during the night so they set up a camera to see who it was. Turns out it was Wu in his sleep.

When they stay late at base after a battle to hang out and work on the mechs they take it in turns to get the food. When it's Kai or Nya they usually get takeout, Cole buys whatever he can find at the local store, Zane cooks for them on this portable stove he has, Jay brings some of his mom's cooking to share and Lloyd gets pastries from the nearest bakery.

After Koko found out about the ninja thing she started visiting their base often. She makes sure they all do their homework, are getting enough sleep, are eating properly and brings them snacks. It embarrasses Lloyd so much.

They have gaming tournaments sometimes. Usually the finalists are either Kai, Jay or Nya. If it's Kai and Nya the sibling rivalry is so thick you could cut it with a knife. With Jay and Kai there's a lot of playful shoving which ends up with one of them falling off the couch. Then when it's Nya and Jay it's a lot quieter, just super tense.

They have found fanfiction of people shipping the ninja together. Most of the time it's pretty funny, except when they ship Kai and Nya together. Kai actually passed out when they first found out, and he didn't wake up for an hour. They were worried they'd broken him.

No matter how old they get the Ninja will always go trick-or-treating. Kai insists they do it, and no one has the heart to tell him no because of how excited he gets.

After the movie the group decided to look after Meowthra, they take turns feeding them and giving them belly rubs. It's basically their mascot now.

Movie Kai -

He's super athletic. It doesn't matter what sport it is, he's tried it at least once. Sometimes it isn't even a sport like dance or cheerleading.

Speaking of cheerleading, Kai tried out for the team at the start of the year since he thought it would be fun. He did a routine to something positive like 'Stick Together' (he didn't make the cut because he was friends with Lloyd (he didn't mind though)). P.S. The idea of cheerleader Kai is my jam!

He tries to get into what his friends are interested in, like he got into music when Cole started talking to the group about it or online videogaming when Jay said he had no one to play with.

He wants to make his friends happy no matter what. Seriously, Lloyd once texted him at 3am saying he was sad and Kai at his apartment in 10 mins panting, holding a shopping bag full of ice cream ready to chill with him.

Kai is incredibly clingy, especially when someone's upset. If he sees someone crying he will hug them for 3 hours straight and refuse to let go.

Clumsy is definitely a word to describe him. No one wants to be his lab partner thanks to what was lovingly dubbed the 'Storage room incident' (they still haven't repaired all the damages).

Despite him loving being a ninja, he's always worrying if something bad is going to happen to his friends. It keeps him up at night most of the time (it's the reason he sleeps in class so much).

Due to his irregular sleeping habits the other ninja have found him asleep in weird places. Such as: His mech, his locker, their double-decker couch, their regular couch, under his desk, the janitor's closet and the fridge (it was summer at the time).

He owns the teddy bear backpack (like from the concept art). He brought it to school a couple times but it got taken by some bullies, who his friends had to restrain him from beating to a pulp, and he hasn't taken it since.

He cares about his hair a lot. He carries around a hair brush with him at all time, as well as hairspray and dry conditioner. Kai also knowns how to do loads of different styles, including multiple kinds of braids.

Like his series counterpart, Kai is afraid of water and cannot swim. The group went to a waterpark once and he had to wear armbands and a floaty ring to go on the slides.

Movie Zane -

Zane has been called 'Mom' by each of his friends at least once, Lloyd does it the most.

When he sings he sounds like a vocaloid (if you don't what this is, look it up).

Speaking of that, he would probably enjoy listening to that music. He finds it relatable and nice to hear a computer singing.

He enjoys really mild food and can't process sugar that well, so he has flavourless food a lot (like his water flavoured popsicles)

He has a vlog about the ninja that they have all featured on more than once. His most popular videos are fail compilations he makes of their battles

He has the best handwriting, like he could a calligrapher it's that good. Jay cried when he looked at it the first time because he thought it was beautiful.

When he first started school he had no idea about personal space. He still doesn't get it now and so he's fine when Cole leans on him a lot.

Zane enjoys when winter comes around. He can't feel the cold that much so he often lends his scarf to Kai when the other is shivering. He can also ice skate which the others found amazing the first time they went to a rink together.

He doesn't sleep that much so he often stays up late messaging Kai on his phone (they talk about the strangest things)

He names every piece of tech he owns. His phone is called 'Yuki'.

During the first month of the ninjas being friends none of them saw Zane eat, since he doesn't need to that often. Until Kai had enough and took him out for ice cream, because he was sure he was going to eat it out of anything else.

Movie Cole -

He listens to music to help him sleep at night, even though he knows it's bad for him.

Cole has no sense of taste, like he'll eat anything, and he can handle really spicy food like it's nothing

He wants to have a song for every occasion, no matter how weird it is, since he thinks life should have a backing track. He constantly asks the others for situations so he can check if he has music for it yet. (He still hasn't found 'being bitten by a snake that was bitten by a spider' for Garmadon, but he's trying).

He will listen to music in other languages, sometimes he looks up lyrics if he's really curious but most of the time he just enjoys how other languages sound.

Cole knows how to play at least 10 instruments, including but not limited to the violin, the guitar, the drums, the flute and the piano.

He often forgets to brush his hair. When he and Kai started being friends Kai almost had a heart attack when he found out. Now the fire ninja makes sure he always has it brushed in the morning, even if he has to do it for him.

When he has to have classes without his headphones on, because the teacher took them or something, he starts humming or taps his foot. Anything to make noise, he doesn't like quiet all that much.

He can imitate phone notification noises. He does it in class when he's bored to see how many people move to check their phone (he caught the teacher out once, and couldn't stop laughing).

Cole's actually blue-yellow colour blind. He sometimes mistakes Jay for Lloyd and vice versa when they're in their ninja uniform.

Movie Jay -

Videogaming is way of life for him. He plays anything. Retro, PC, co-op, shooters; It really doesn't matter to him.

He listens to music while he games sometimes if he doesn't like the game soundtrack or if he needs to get pumped up.

Everyone knows about his crush on Nya, except Nya and Kai. The former because he hasn't told her yet and the latter due to the fact no one knows how he'll react to the news.

Gets sick a lot. It annoys him to no end. His mom is constantly sending him to school with thermoses of noodle soup for colds, and tons of medicine.

He gets stressed a lot. Jay has a habit of overthinking things to the point it hurts his head to think about. He's starting to drink herbal teas from Wu to help with it.

He has kitten sneezes. Everyone thinks it's the cutest thing ever.

He owns like a million scarfs, and they're all knitted by his mom. He refuses to get rid of any of them because of how long she spent on each one.

He is terrified of Furbys, he thinks they're creepy and shouldn't be given to kids.

Jay can actually knit for himself but only makes stuff for other people as gifts.

Movie Nya -

Her grades are the most important thing in her life, besides her bike.

She hates getting ill, because she thinks it makes her look weak and she doesn't want Kai to miss school to take care of her. Even if he insists he can afford time off school.

Was voted: 'Most likely to get away with murder', by her classmates. She wears the title like a badge of honour.

Out of all the ninja she's definitely the most intimidating. Anyone who calls her 'harmless' has regretted it.

Nya enjoys reading in her free time. She likes all types of stories, including manga, comics and visual novels.

She pulls pranks more than most people would expect. It's the reason she didn't get invited to many 'girls only' sleepovers as a kid, due to drawing on people’s faces among other things.

When she found out Koko was Lady Iron Dragon it took her a week to build up the courage to ask for her autograph. (Which is currently framed on her bedroom wall.)

Usually forgets to eat breakfast in the morning, so Zane started bringing her snacks before school so Kai won't worry about her health.

She's super supportive of all of her friends. She's usually the one cheering the loudest for them and patting them on the back for a job well done.

Her dream is to travel the world after they graduate. She wants to see everything the world has to offer, but she always insists her home base will be Ninjago.

Movie Lloyd -

When he's sad he eats sugary food, especially ice cream. It worries his mom so he doesn't do it that much nowadays.

He's a closeted fanboy of anime. Like he has posters and stuff all over his room, which his mom finds adorable, but he refuses to show any of his friends. Kai found out about by accident and started watching shows with him.

Much like his series counterpart, when Lloyd was a kid he had a bowl cut. Cole found a picture of it in a yearbook, they have it hanging up in their base on the fridge.

Up until his eighth birthday he sent Garmadon an invitation to his party just in case his dad actually wanted to come. It broke Koko's heart every time he didn't and Lloyd locked himself in his room.

Jay once said he looked like Link from Zelda. It stuck with him to the point he dressed up as him for Halloween. Everyone thought it was great.

His sense of humour is like 40% self-deprecating and 60% sarcasm, no one knows if he's serious most of the time because of it.

He's jokingly been called Kai and Nya's 'sibling' before because of how protective the two are of him, they don't mind and take it as a compliment. When Koko heard it for the first time she started crying and said she would love to have Kai and Nya as part of the family.

He has tons of mini cacti in his room, because he thinks their cute. They each have unique pots and names. He talks to them when he's lonely and thinks no one is listening.

He sometimes steals food from the team fridge and blames it on someone else (no one has actually caught him yet).
