Chapter 19: It’s Big Fun!
Someone pounding on a door was what brought Marinette to consciousness.
“Stop knocking!” she muttered and groaned when whoever it was didn’t stop. She then realized her mouth felt weird: dry and itchy, like someone had shoved cotton balls down her throat. “Ugh.”
“Are you awake?” A voice hit her ears and she managed to blink her eyes open to see Luka’s face. He was a bit blurry - which was probably due to the sleep in her eyes - but his hair was a little messy, as if he’d just woken up, and he was leaning over her, looking into her face.
That was funny. Why was Luka in her room? Her parents would never allow a co-ed sleepover and she didn’t remember sneaking Luka up to her room so she must still be dreaming.
Squeezing her eyes shut at the bright light that flashed for a moment, Marinette groaned. “Dream-Luka. What are you talking about?”
His laugh washed over her. “You think I’m a dream? I’m flattered.”
There was a feather-like touch against her cheek, too real to be a dream, and Marinette felt her eyes snap open. Luka’s bright blue eyes, shining with mirth, were the first thing she saw. Blinking more, her eyes adjusted and she saw the distinct rafters of the boat above her and the drawn blue curtain pulled around them. She could also hear the soft waves of the Seine and a quiet snore next to her. That’s when it clicked.
“I’m on the boat?” she questioned.

While I am thinking about final fantasy X
How long does a calm last?
Every fanfiction has their own take on it. And while the game does indicate Calms are varients, I think numbers like a year or two (or shorter), are unrealistic.
Lady Yunalesca defeated the first Sin 1000 years before Yunas in game journey.
Gandof, the first Summoner after Yunalesca came 600 years after her. Gandof also accomplished other great deeds, like Qactuars entrapment apparantly. So 400 years pre- game. I have to wonder what Sin was up to? Did he have Annual attacks? Are all other parts of the world destroyed besides Spirian Islands? Hard what at that official history. So while probably Sin has probably done a hell of a number on the Spiran poupluation, I don't know that how Spira is still standing if Sin is half as destructive as it was in game. FFX your world is sad and beautiful, but your lore makes me want to kick things sometimes. And this is one of them. Probably not what I should do at 2am, but yolo.
Possible theories include but are not limited to- Sin has gotten faster over the years in travel time to sow more destruction.
-Sin has recovered from the calm faster over time, like a virus learning resistance to antibody.
-Sin conqured other worlds occasionally coming back to cause Havoc on Spira.
-Naps?
-Summoners with the strength to seal Sin have had their leinages die out.
-Jecht personally got into a pissing match with his son, and the destruction seen in game was an unusually high ammount?
In order for Spira to still be standing, the poupluation has to have time to recover. And it takes 15 years for someone to be somewhat of an adult. Sort of. And we have to assume that summoners are not grown on trees, and that it takes more then just changing your job class to be an effective one. At least 2-3 years. In other words, training. Apparantly his Calm was short lived, in whatever the hell that Means in Calm timelines.
High summoner Ohalland came 230 years before Yuna. The blitzball playing priest. It doesn't specify the length of his calm, but apparantly he was only the third.
The numbers make me baffled, ok. Theres 170 years between them, assuming the numbers are accurate. 170 years between High summoners second and third. 600 between the first and second.
This does not make a lot of sense of the Calm is two years. Two years is not a lot of time to recover the poupluation after being struck by the uncaring fists of death and destruction.
Yocun was 100 years before game. She was the Crusader High summoner. She had a sword, and is apparantly the first female summoner since the original. Her Guardian is a warrior Monk!
Then 13 years before the game, Sin killed Braskas wife, and So Braska went back to the temples to get summoner training after all his priest training. So now theres a 90 year gap.
But I'm still in disbelif over the only five High Summoners Over 1000 years period, and the intensity of the gaps. Like Sir, I'm no mathmatician, but your numbers are insane. Absoloute hard what. If any Sin is capable of disintigration like at Mushroom rock, and even without that drownings seem to be frequent given its tropics, what has the rate of death been over those thousand years? Not just direct death from monster attack, but death from messing up the landscape, or killing the people needed to bring in harvest and support the poupluations. The property it destorys, people crused in homes, breathless in the merciless ocean?
Summomers do not have a high sucess rate, with both dead summoners, and ones who give up encountered on the journey. Lulu has been a guardian to both an ex-summoner, and a Dead one.
So I think that, while high summoner is not a roll anyone should be able to fulfill, I think that its sensible for there to be more then five High Summoners before Yuna. Let Takumi and Kaya, Katara and Sakura, Dimitri and Lambert have been summoners in the time before Yuna. Make some OC High summoners. I've just expanded the summoner count to nine, and even with those numbers it still feels pretty unbelivable.
Like, lets give the Years of Calm an unlikly number of 20 years. 9x20 =180. Lets give Gandof 10, beacuse actually his was apparantly short. 170. And give Braska 7, as thats when Yuna joined training (3 years before start). 163. Thats 837 years of Sin rampaging. Or 900 with the original at 20 years.
And thats paced throughout the 1000 years.
Lets go to 10 years for 3, 5 for Gan, 7 for Braska. Thats 42 years of Calm. 17 within a 100 year time period.
If Sin is something that builds up the longer it is active, then that period of 600 years before Gandof became a summoner is boggling. What is Sin doing? Spawning Jenova?
Even if we give Yunalesca and Ohalland 25 years of Calm, for ridiclously long, Braska 7, Yocun 15, and Gandof 10 thats still less then 100 years for recovery, paced out over 1000 years. Just what in the world is missing in the history between what was covered up in the church, and what is lost to time known only to the fadeing ruins? Other summoners, so my bet goes. Swallowed by church propaganda and time.

The 100 liveblog ep1.11 The Calm
I am behind folks. So sorry. I don't know how I got so behind. I mean. I have a hard time getting to watch so I guess that's it. And when I'm done with the finale I have to watch Shadow and Bone before my next book assignment.
High Stakes. The Ark is dying. The Grounders are coming. Finn got dumped twice. Lincoln is leacing.
Out in the woods two days later Bellamy and Clarke are looking for the attack, knowing it's coming. Bellamy is looking at her. LOOKING at her. He's already fallen but acting cool. Clarke is feeling bad about being a warmonger. The Ark is radio silence. Bellamy thinks they ran out of air and it makes him feel guilty.
Clarke still thinks Abby was on the exploded exodus ship. (which we no know was blown up by Mount Weather, but they didn't know that storyline yet.)
Oh Kane is getting air from a vent. A little echo of s4 when the delinquents make it back to the Ark and the air vent saves them. That's the same window that they'll have later although I don't think that Kane is in the same section as the delinquents claim later.
The delinquents are in the smoker and some jackass callsher the grounder pounder. And Murphy defends her. The beginning of his redemption? Not quite, cause he still has some nasty actions coming, but the beginning I think.
Ew. Finn is flirting with Raven over the bullets. And Raven is being all cool. Finn is acting like he knows her so well and like it's a way to get back in her good graces. And she can't let him go. Screw him Raven honestly. He doesn't deserve you. "I just want you to be happy."
AND the smoker is up in flames. Because that dick didn't listen to Octavia. Murphy beats him up. "Save it for the grounders," Bellamy says. "THAT WAS ALL THE FOOD." O. Because they don't have enough against them.
Clarke says they need to hunt. B grabs her wrist. "With the whole army out there?" They need food, so B sets out hunting teams. Finn tries to go with Clarke. "You're lousy with a spear but you're sneaky." Ew. Finn is being condescending to the kid who invited Clarke to hunt.
B asks Raven for more ammo and Raven is bugging out. B says she can't leave. B stops her. 'You came down here in a pod you rebuilt yourself. You made a bomb out of a tin can. What else do you have in that head of yours?" She comes up with radios. "See we need you. You. may be a huge pain in the ass but we need you." YEs actually Bellamy is a better romantic choice than Finn. Jasper is. Clarke is. Hell, anyone is. Murphy is. Honestly. Give him time.
Oh back on the Ark, Kane finds Wick with his arm stuck in a door. What a dick (that actor.) He ruined the character. There was a hull vreech in engineering. They were betrayed by Sydney, stole the exodus. "What a bitch. My mom voted for her." He doesn't look that young honestly. Mid twenties, not going on about his mom. But Wick is funny. Kane is suddenly interested in survivors. Which they find. A whole bunch of them.
Myles Finn and Clarke tracking... but are being hunted. "I don't see anything," Myles says. Famous last words. He's shot by an arrow. Finn is like, "We gotta leave him." Dick. Always trying to leave kids behind.
Anya gets Clarke.
Kane and Wick kibbitzing. Worries about air. The cooling air is a message. He thinks theeres someone in earth monitoring. Wick thinks he has apoxia and his brain is going wacko. lol.
Anya Clarke and Finn. Oh the kid who can't breathe. Anya threatens her. Help her or Finn dies. That's fine. Promises promises Anya. Too bad you didn't live up to that one.
Oh yeah. It's Jaha in Earth Monitoring. He says Kane is too stubborn to die. Sinclair is rerouting air to the mess hall. And Jaha is saying he's about to run out of air. All right Jaha that's fine youre suicidal we know that, but I know Sinclair isn't so you better work harder at staying alive.
I have resentments against certain characters that make me biased. Have you noticed? lol.
Kane sends Wick out with the people so he can get Jaha and Sinclair and is reisking his life. Wick won't let him do it alone. The people come back to help. Why couldn't they do more of THIS. This working together to help everyone out. Because that's true to life and true to the story, instead they have to be like NAH WERE ALL MOBS ONE SECOND A WAY FROM EATING EACH OTHER. Ugh so sick of grimdark.
Clarke realizes that the kid injured is from the bomb on the bridge. Finn looks guilty because he thought his peacenik thing was safe against bridges.
Monty has found the radio. He says something is jamming the signal. He's trying to find out why the dropship crashed. and contact the ark. Raven tells him the ark is a hole in the sky. Monty is sad about his family but Raven needs the radio for the battle com.
Clarke and Finn don't come back with the hunters and Raven feels sad and jealous. :What's it been a day and a half, she says to B. "You're mistaking me for someone who cares." Now Raven is stripping. Where else would this scene come in but it seems and awkward time, doens't it? Her seduction seems rather aggressive and angry. "If you're looking for someone to talk you down. That you're just upset and not thinking straight, I'm not that guy." yeah you are Bellamy. You just did it. IT didn't stop either of you but okay. Again. I like braven better that finn and raven. They're better as friends but still.
Clarke is still trying to save the kid. Scalpel. blood. sticks a little tube into her chest to release pressure. Anya hits Finn. Hit him harder.
Kane gets into Earth monitorng and gives oxygen to the survivors. "I gave you an order. You are bound by law to follow." Jaha
"The people in this room are our best chance at survival."
Clarke "How could you send a little girl into battle."
"She was my second." "You put the bomb on the bridge. You did this to her." AGAIN. I attack you. You fight back. Therefore it's all your fault.
There was absolutely no examination of this train of thought it was taken as correct. No one ever said. "If you didn't attack us, you wouldn't have been on that bridge would you?"
No raven fucking B doesn't help your heartbreak. that's not what sex is for.
WHO WAS IN THE SERVICE BAY WHO CLOSED THE DOOR???
Shall we guess?
It's Abby isn't it?
Kane has to try to save them.
Clarke trying to save Tris isn't exciting when you know how this storyline ends. It's not about character. It's about stupid grounder society and violence and pointless warmongering. And yes, how Clarke gets them out of it. But it's interesting the things I'm interested in watching and the things I'm not. I am interested in what's happening on the ark.
Also Clarke's fear that they'll kill Finn is horrible to see. He's such a freaking creep. But they don't even kill him. And Clarke is so terrified for him. He's not worth it.
Wick making jokes is good though. We really need that comic relief. "When you die can I have your shoes?" Damn I'm so mad at that actor for being a dick.
Raven realizes that Clarke and Finn didn't run off together but were with another kid and all of a sudden she's like OH they WEREN'T hooking up. For a smart girl she's stupid about finn.
Kane crawling through a tunnel to hear clanging. OH Shades of season TWO when Abby is crawling through a tunnel with clanging to save Kane from the cave in after Mount weather drops a bomb on the village. Call back. Or call forward.
The first Kabby cuddle.
The warrior (nice voice) is telling Clarke that Anya won't kill Clarke because they need a healer. He tells her that by tomorrow the delinquents will be gone. She asks about the kill scars from combat. Asks how many he has. He opens his armor. "And half were after I hurt my knee." She kicks his knee and stabs him in the throat and holds her hand over his mouth while he dies. "Shh."
I'd say that's her first kill. Not mercy kill. Kill kill. The other was being a doctor.
She has crazy eyes.
Raven and O. "This morning I was thinking how much easier it would be if Finn was just gone." It would be. We wish it had happened that way. Bad things would have been averted.
Monty's signal disappears. He was trying to tell them there was a weird signal.
They find Myles. He says grounders took Clarke and Finn.
Bellamy is getting a lot more caring. "Raven I'm sorry." Now he realizes Monty is gone too.
Clarke running through the woods.
She gets caught in a trap slinging her through the trees.
I mean, not for nothing, but HOW IS THAT ALL CALM???

not to be controversial bc I know this is like…not in line with shifting opinions on fanfic comment culture but if there’s a glaring typo in my work I will NOT be offended by pointing it out. if ao3 fucks up the formatting…I will also not be offended by having this pointed out…
‘looking forward to the next update’ and ‘I hope you update soon!’ are different vibes than a demand, and should be read in good faith because a reader is finding their way to tell you how much they love it. I will not be mad at this.
‘I don’t usually like this ship but this fic made me feel something’ is also incredibly high praise. I’m not going to get mad at this.
even ‘I love this fic but I’m curious about why you made [x] choice’ is just another way a reader is engaging in and putting thought into your work.
I just feel like a lot of authors take any comment that’s not perfectly articulated glowing praise in the exact manner they’re hoping to receive it in bad faith.
fic engagement has been dropping across the board over the last several years, and yes it’s frustrating but it isn’t as though I can’t see how it happens. comment anxiety can be a real thing. the last thing anyone wants to do is offend an author they love, and that means sometimes people default to silence.
idk where I’m going with this I guess aside from saying unless a comment is outright attacking me I’m never going to get mad at it, and I think a lot of authors should feel the same way. ESPECIALLY TYPOS PLZ GOD POINT OUT MY TYPOS.

what is with men being mad any time a woman raises her voice where did that even come from. someone posted a video of a small electrical explosion, and the top comment was of course the woman screams. the second comment is women try not to scream challenge, level impossible. i had to go back and watch the video again. there is, somewhat fainty, a little gasp emitted off-camera, more of a yelp than a scream. it is mostly lost in the crack of the explosion. afterwards, you hear her voice, shaken, say, are you okay?
i am helping one of my friends train her voice pitch lower, because she wants to be taken seriously at work. she and i do each other's nails and talk about gender roles; and how - due to our appearance - neither of us have ever been able to be "hysterical" in public. we both appear young and sweet and feminine. she is cisgender, and cannot use her natural voice in her profession because people keep saying she appears to be "vapid". we both try to figure out if our purposeful voice lowering is technically sexist. is it promoting something when you are a victim to it?
a storm almost sends a pole through a car window. in the dashcam, you can hear the woman passenger say her partner's name twice, crying out in alarm. she sounds terrified. in the comments, she is lambasted for her lack of calm. how is that even fucking helping?
in high school, i taught myself to have a lower voice. i had been recorded when i was genuinely (and righteously) upset; and i hated how my voice sounded on the phone speakers when it was played back. i was defending my mom, and my voice cracked with emotion. it meant i was no longer winning the argument: i was just shrieking about it.
girls meet each other after a long summer and let out a little joyful scream. this usually stops around 12-14, because people will not tolerate this display of affection (as it has the effect of being passingly annoying). something about the fact that little girls can't ever even be annoying. we are trained to examine each part of our lives (even joy) for anything that could make us upsetting and disgusting. they act like teenage girls are breaking into houses and shrieking you awake at 3 in the morning. speaking as a public school educator: trust me, it's not that bad, you can just roll your eyes and move on. it does not compare to the ways boys end up being annoying: slurs in graffiti, purposefully mocking your body, following you after you said no. you know, just boy things.
there's another video of a man who is not allowed to yell in the house, so he snaps his fingers when he's excited about soccer. the comments are full of angry men, talking about how their brother is unfairly caged. let him express himself and this is terrible to do to someone. eventually the couple has to address it in a second video: they are married with a newborn baby. he was trying not to wake the infant up. there is no comment on the fact women are not allowed to yell indoors. or the fact that it could have been really alarming or triggering for his wife. sometimes i wonder if straight men even like women, if they even enjoy being in relationships with them.
for the longest time, i hated roller coasters because it always felt inappropriate and uncomfortable for me to scream. one of my friends called me on it, said it was unusual i'm so unwilling. i had to go to my therapist about it. i don't like to scream because i was not raised in a safe situation, and raising my voice would have brought unsafe attention towards me. even when i am supposed to scream, it feels shameful, guilty. i was not treated kindly, so i lack a basic form of self-protection. this is not a natural response. it is not good that in a situation of high adrenaline - i shut up about it.
something very bad is happening, i think. in between all the beauty standards and the stuff i've already discussed - this one feels new and cruel in a way i can't quite express. yes, it's scary and silencing. but there's something about how direct it is - that so many men agree with the sentiment that women should never yell, even in an emergency - it feels different.
is the word shriek gendered automatically? how about shrill or screech? in self defense class, one of the first things they tell you is to yell, as loud and as shrilly as you can. they say it will feel rude. most women will not do this. you need to practice overcoming the social pressure and just scream.
most women do not cry out, even when it's bad. we do not report it. we walk faster. we do not make a scene. what would be the point of doing anything else? no matter what we do, we don't get taken seriously. it is a joke to them. an instagram caption punchline. we have to present ourselves as silent, beautiful, captivating - "valuable."
a woman is outside watching her kids when someone throws a firecracker at them. she screams and runs towards her children. in the comments, grown men flock together in the thousands: god. women are so annoying.

“How is 12 year old Annabeth head of the Athena cabin??”
1. Demi gods have the life expectancy of a lemming.
2. Gifted kids often burn out by age 16 & I doubt any of the Athena teens have the energy or desire to argue with their little sister who willingly takes care of all the family paperwork.
