the ninth doctor trusted rose enough to believe she would stay with him after his face changed. and twelve took some convincing but towards the end of deep breath accepted that clara would stay by his side no matter how old he looked. but thirteen was so used to losing people. her previous self had loved clara and lost her, he had looked after bill and failed to save her, he had tried to redeem missy and (to his knowledge) lost that cause too. no wonder she wouldn’t trust yaz to stay for her fourteenth face. no wonder she believed she ‘had to do this next part alone’. she had grown quietly distant with the new knowledge that she was no longer even an ordinary gallifreyan, not something of this universe, but outside of it, alien even to the aliens. isolated and inaccessible, standing on an invisible pedestal her ancestors placed her on — a pedestal that more resembled a cage. glass walls on all sides like the forced regeneration chamber. thin glass wall between her and yaz now, transparent but too solid to break through. harder than azbantium when there’s no solid footing to stand on.
Tumblr media
of course yaz would run when she saw her new self. of course she would leave. companions would never stay now, they would never fully understand. when thirteen said that she would need to do ‘this next part’ alone, by ‘next part’ she meant ‘the rest of her (potentially eternal) life’. it’s the classic gambit: push the one you love away before they get the chance to reject you. because they always will, now. either that or they die in horrible circumstances. better to flee like you’ve always done.
Tumblr media
this is why the bigeneration was a narrative necessity, why the giggle was the perfect vision of a positive finale. the original version of the doctor gets to settle down with people that he won’t lose. people that he won’t turn away from. people whose hearts he won’t inevitably break. he’s sitting there in the back yard and he’s not going anywhere…
Tumblr media
…yet somewhere out there in sheffield lives a police officer named yazmin khan. she’s not all sunshine and rainbows — all cops are bastards, after all. sometimes she takes her nameless rage out on a shoplifting suspect. sometimes she hands a parking ticket to a kid that didn’t deserve it. and sometimes she does genuine good for the community, sometimes she goes to the club and dances with strangers, sometimes she sits on the sofa and watches a documentary about space exploration and laughs at the painful inaccuracies. and many miles south, the doctor spends time with his family, but he’ll never get the courage to visit her. because she’d want to run away with him again. and he could never give her that, not anymore. anything but running.
yazmin khan loved the universe in the eyes of her doctor. oh, that doctor in the garden? the stay-at-home-doctor? he’s brilliant, but he would never be enough for her. his presence would never replace the cosmic vistas and myriads of stars thirteen gave her. and she’s never coming back

so we've talked about how yazs "i'd rather not have met her" position is so the polar opposite of other companion's stances on having known the doctor bc it's not a Companion Position that yaz is taking here it's a Doctor one, right?
but have we also talked about how 13's "i wish this would go on forever" is a companion position? it's what rose says before dying/switching universes. it's what donna says before losing her memories/effectively dying. it's a Companion Position.

i really understand a lot of the thasmin criticism coming for the fourteenth doctor's ending of healing through settling down permanently with the nobles just after the doctor denied their ability to settle down with yaz. it's not nice to think about yaz's reaction to hearing that the doctor is just chilling on earth with donna days after they told her that wasn't a life they could pursue together. however, i also think the contexts of their relationships are really important here. fourteen settles down with donna in a platonic and familial capacity, the show basically explicitly says that the doctor needed his best friend to heal. i think this is especially important given that the last 'happy ending' for a ten-spinoff (metacrisis) was with rose as romantic partners. rose is such a large and tragic part of the tenth doctor's story that to me, fourteen then settling down and saying "he's never been so happy in his life" without her or romance is a really important development for him specifically in valuing platonic relationships. so the way i see it, the doctor felt able to settle down in a familial context but not in a romantic one - yaz was a potential romantic partner. this just confirms to me how much the doctor loves yaz in a romantic context. a frustrating situation for thassies (believe me as a thassie i feel it too) but one which i think can be understood better in looking at the types of relationships the doctor wants/needs at this point in their life

*LONG POST WARNING*
What your favourite New Who Companion says about you (absolutely no offence meant towards anyone, this is just for fun):
Rose: Either the most vanilla person alive, or an RTD era purist. Has spent years fighting for the honor of the RTD era. Ships Ten and Rose to the degree that they shudder at the thought of the Doctor having a relationship with someone else. Is constantly at war with Amy stans. Part of the reason for the RTD enjoyer vs Moffat fan civil war. Usually nice in real life, and quite nostalgic for the Tennant era, so usually OK to be friends with. Unless they say Mickey was treated fairly, at which point, you should run.
Mickey: One of the most kind-hearted, empathetic people, who saw how Mickey was mistreated by Rose in S2 and immediately just wanted to check if he was OK. Is able to hold decent relations with Rose stans due to Mickey's character development after the relationship, and has a surprisingly strong alliance with Rory fans. Was gutted when they heard about Noel Clarke's horrible behaviour and actions.
Adam: Let's be real, we all forgot this guy existed and for good reason.
Captain Jack: Every night, they lie in bed, haunted by the ghost of Torchwood. Loved seeing Jack again in S12, but felt disappointed after his lack of presence in Revolution of the Daleks. Has modelled several aspects of their personality on the Captain, and has the dating life (or lack thereof) to prove it. Cried at the deaths of Ianto and John Barrowman's career.
Martha: Basically Rose fans, except with slightly more indie music taste. Either that, or a person who knows how integral Martha is to 10's character arc. Has attempted to defend the "Space Jesus" scene a couple of times, and cried with happiness when Harbo Wholmes said that it worked in his review. Has a bit of a patchy relationship with Rose stans due to the Doctor's rebound arc, gets along better with Donna stans due to the fact that S4 acknowledged that 10 mistreated Martha. Generally has good taste and is nice to be around, just don't mention how undeveloped her relationship with Tom was.
Donna: Either a child of the late 90s/early 2000s who had the joy of watching New Who at it's peak in 2008, a person who really appreciates great character writing and an excellent series, or someone who just wanted a break from the companion having a romantic subplot. Often gets into heated arguments with Amy stans by (correctly) saying that Series 4 was better than Series 5. Uses Donna's funny dialogue and quips to hide the fact they are still recovering from one of the cruellest companion exits in the show. Generally nice, but very defensive of The Doctor's Daughter.
Wilf: I love these guys. Knows that a) Wilf is the single best character in the entirety of New Who and b) he counts as a companion. Has the best possible taste, and is an absolute joy to be around as a result of it. An emotional wreck after every single rewatch of The End of Time, especially now that the legendary Bernard Cribbins has left us. Has excellent relations with Donna stans, and was similarly overjoyed when they heard about the 60th. Refuses to admit that The End of Time would have possibly worked better as a 90 minute special.
Amy: Definitely has followed the eons-old teaching of "gaslight, gatekeep, girlboss" at some point. Refuses to admit A Good Man Goes to War was mid and that Amy really badly mistreated our sweet prince Rory in a large chunk of S5. Is really happy that Karen Gillan made it big in Hollywood. Friendly unless you say you prefer Rose to Amy. Could not be comforted after that cameo in Time of the Doctor.
Rory: Their favourite episode is usually The Girl Who Waited. Loyal, friendly, introverted and lovable, they of course identify with Rory's slightly long-suffering but accepting and funny character. Understandably annoyed at how Amy mistreated Rory in S5, but happy that S6 & 7A fixed that marriage. Thanks to Rory waiting for 2000 years, their bar for any personal relationship has been set insanely high. Celebrated when the BBC actually allowed Arthur Darvill to style his hair in S7A. Had to check Rory was definitely dead at the end of Angels Take Manhattan due to Moffat killing him whenever more tension was needed in a story.
River Song: Divided into two groups. Those who like River Song's more nuanced appearances in Silence in the Library, A Good Man Goes to War and The Husbands of River Song are awesome. Those who prefer the episodes that Moffat wrote with one hand, less so. Was overjpyed to see the Moffat Era reappraisal of 2020, only to be slightly disappointed when people said S6 was his weakest series. Wierdly enough, gets along nicely with all other companion stans. Has definitely said "Hello sweetie" to their partner/partners/friends/pets. If they prefer 12 and River to 11 and River, pass them the aux on a long journey (trust me on this one).
Clara: From my personal experience, there is a 60% chance that they are a closeted bisexual. Doesn't get why Clara was so overhated, especially in S9. Is wierdly OK with admitting that Victorian Clara was slightly more interesting to begin with, but knows that the character worked so well in 12's era. If they ship 11 and Clara, keep an eye on them. They haven't fully earned your trust yet.
Bill: Heterosexuality was never an option. Gets along well with Clara stans, as they both know how much the 12th Doctor's era s l a p p e d. Had their emotions mangled during the S10 finale, but fortunately came out intact thanks to that puddle and a happy-ish ending. Loved that Bill called 12 out on his bullshit and asked all the trivial questions we were all thinking. Singlehandedly drove the Moffat Era reappraisal over quarantine. Has the best fashion sense out of all the stans.
Nardole: A terrifying enigma. Looked at all the companions with complex stories, interesting arcs and major development, but instead went with the comic relief. Yes, Nardole is funny and a great support character, but... er... how? They can be nice. They can also be fans of Little Britain, which is a red flag. It's a roll of the dice.
Graham: Bradley Walsh was the highlight of the slightly undervalued S11, and they know it. Definitely has the vibe of being 10+ years older than they actually are in terms of attitude, but in the best way. Has definitely owned a pair of cords in their life. Goes into Doctor Who just looking for a fun hour of entertainment rather than lore. Great to hang out with. They always bring snacks.
Ryan: Tries to ignore the fact that Ryan has the most fucking insulting depiction of dyspraxia in any form of media (sorry, I have dyspraxia, and the way it was treated in S11 & 12 just really rubbed me the wrong way), but is also helpful and really in favour of spreading awareness. We're cool for now.
Yaz: One of the nicest, most well-intentioned people you will ever meet, always defending the underdog, supporting others and just being sweeter than a tea with six sugars, but also a master of illusion. Has read so many fan fictions, seen so much fan art and shipped Thasmin so much that they have tricked themselves into thinking Yaz is a three-dimensional, well-written character whose story was not completely made up on the go by Chibnall. Little more than a defeated husk after Power of the Doctor, being rewarded for all those years of fanfics, shipping and defending the era with a couple of longing stares and some hastily written "will they/won't they" scenes before 13 unceremoniously booted Yaz out of the TARDIS. Thinks Demons of the Punjab is the best 13 episode when it is really The Haunting of Villa Diodati.
Dan: Is more of a fan of John Bishop and his charisma than they are a fan of Dan, or is a terminally online person who thinks quoting "Evil Dan" videos makes them the funniest human alive (it really doesn't).

Thasmin & How the Changing of Showrunners Handicapped Their Story
You know what? I'm going to rant about it. I've been thinking about Doctor Who from a Watsonian versus Doylist point of view on a constant basis, especially when it comes to showrunners and how the doctor is handed over from showrunner to showrunner and how the exit of Yaz from the show is it possibly the clearest example in the world of this feeling of a showrunner being switched. I'm not talking writing differences, I'm not talking stylistic differences, I'm talking the way that she left the show. Because I would put all of my life savings on the fact that if Thirteen and fourteen had the same show runner, Yaz would have been able to stay around for 13's regeneration. You can feel the writing of the show STRAINING to justify why Thirteen would dump her/leave her behind. It feels abrupt because it IS. Rose got to continue her story with 10 until its organic end. Same with Clara. Hell, even River, though her circumstances were slightly different. There is literally no reason why Fourteen wouldn't go after her the moment the 60th specials end except for the fact that for some absolutely weird reason RTD didn't mention Yaz ONCE despite 14 being more "emotionally open" than the Doctors before him.
Like, I'm going to be honest. I'm mostly ambivalent on Thasmin. I think they're sweet and had potential and got screwed in the build up in seasons 11 and 12 (up until Revolution, even). But if I was y'all I would be PISSED. Because that kind of treatment of Yaz and Thasmin as a love story sucked from both the Power of the Doctor AND the 60th anniversary specials. No closure. No real explanation. No acknowledgement of the main love story of the last showrunner. (Even Steven Moffat name-dropped Bad Wolf/Rose in the 50th special, though he did also have the whole 10th Doctor running around with Elizabeth I thing so maybe that cancels itself out.) The mechanics of the show and how it's run screwed you over. And I'm sorry. I hope y'all get some acknowledgement in 15's Era. I'll be pleasantly and happily surprised if we get a cameo (or some miraculous wrap-up of the storyline ala Husbands of River Song), but seeing how the most logical place for a mention (the toymaker) came and went without a peep I'm not hedging my bets.
(Going to go check out some fanfic, though- and imagine that fourteen took off towards Sheffield the moment the 60th anniversary wrapped!)

i know its not explicitly canon but the concept of the doctor and yaz sharing a room/bed hurts so much like.
imagine being best friends with someone who refuses to share anything with you, that you maybe have romantic feelings for, and you still share a bed despite knowing its probably a bad idea. like... being closeted your whole life, struggling with the fact that you like other girls, probably afraid to have sleepovers with female friends.
but with this person its different, you just want that extra bit of contact and familiarity with her, that vulnerability when she cant show it in any other way, which she offers to you willingly one day and you take it, after being separated for months not even knowing if she was alive, you take it. you dont care if this maybe means more than you want it to, but you take it. it cant hurt too much if only one of you is pining after the other, right?
and maybe you read into it too much when she always finds her way to your side of the bed in her sleep, often waking with your limbs tangled together, but there’s no way it means anything. she doesnt like physical touch very much under any other circumstances, but it doesnt mean anything.
imagine already being in the crisis of falling in love with someone you know you shouldnt love and then throwing bed sharing into the mix. just the show of affection of it all. someone who doesnt like to be open about literally anything letting you see her in such a state, exist with her in such a state. its a whole different level of trust that as far as im aware, no companion has gotten before.

power of the doctor was such an incredible episode for yaz. she truly is the hero of the story, and it was so incredible to watch her step into the limelight like that. for so long we’ve seen how much yaz needs the doctor, but for the first time we really got to see the doctor needing yaz. she saved the doctor and the entire universe multiple times, and i’m so so proud of her.
and after a while trying to process the ending, i think i understand it more now. we saw how desperate yaz was for the doctor in revolution of the daleks, to the point that it was almost unhealthy. then we get to see her travelling the world in survivors of the flux, stronger than she was last time but still missing the doctor awfully. and then we get this, yaz taking her nani’s advice, taking herself away before the inevitable happens. “courage is knowing something will hurt and doing it anyway”.
she’s not clara, or rose, there was never going to be a chance (in my mind at least) that she would want to travel with another doctor, her doctor was the only one she’d ever want to be with, so she knows that this regeneration has to be the end of the journey for her. and even in that moment, when her heart is breaking, she still puts the doctor first. she doesn’t say goodbye, even though it inevitably will be, because she knows how much that hurts the doctor, choosing instead to leave their story on an end note of hope and acceptance. she could’ve argued and fought and begged to stay, but she didn’t, she knew what both her and the doctor needed in that moment, and she walked away with dignity and bravery. i think more than anything this shows her character’s maturity, how far she’s come since the beginning. she can’t have her doctor anymore, and even though she doesn’t want it to end, she knows she doesn’t get a say in that anymore. she has to learn to live without the doctor, and she’s strong enough to know that she will.
and the wonderful thing is that she still achieved so much since she first stepped into that tardis. she wanted to do more with her life and she ended up saving the universe and helping so many people. she wanted to see more of the universe and she’s had so many adventures. she wanted more time with the doctor, and she got that, even if it ended in heartbreak. at one point, she never believed she’d amount to anything more than a depressed teenager that she thought no one cared about, but she did, she survived, and she got to hear the woman she fell in love with call her one of the greatest people she’s ever known. she’s made lifelong friends in ryan, graham and dan, something she never thought she’d have. she’s no longer trapped, and she’s no longer alone.
i’ll never stop being grateful that she exists and i got to watch her grow and evolve as a character. yasmin khan, i hope one day i can be as brave as you are <3

yaz and the doctor always reaching towards each other thru a barrier, whether it be glass or a dimensional barrier, keep getting separated by something invisible whether it be physically or their own doubts and thoughts, finally accepting it but not wanting to close that door so they never Actually say the word goodbye, holding out hope that they meet again in the future even if she's not her doctor anymore, she'll always be her yaz

My friend and I were talking about bigeneration and I had a thought— what if the Curator is in 14’s line, not 15’s? And what if 14’s line can ONLY use old faces now. AND, what if he has to go in backwards order??
So when he regenerates, it’s back to 13’s face. She spends that whole lifetime with Yaz. And with each new life he gets a new career, and when it’s 4’s face he knows it’s time to be the Curator.

sea devils thoughts. the plot of the episode was middling, the cgi was terrible and everything to do with the sea devils themselves overall kinda flopped. almost everything… apart from the inevitable thasmin resolution.
some people call it queerbait, but i firmly disagree. it’s completely convincing and fully in line with thirteen’s past characterisation: after having lost so many people during her previous incarnations because (as she believes) she let herself get too attached to them, allowing codependency to flourish (even in a platonic sense with the likes of bill or donna) she has set a perfectly lucid, yet tragic mental boundary with herself in her heart of hearts: never again. no more opening up unless there’s no other option, no more letting people close, no more romance that sooner or later turns sour and ends in forced separation, grief and pain. if it was going to be anyone it would have been yaz, but the doctor doesn’t “go on dates” anymore (funny how casual she tries to sound even regarding the language she uses — “dating” sounds impermanent and nonchalant, doesn’t require the commitment and self-sacrificial devotion that every romantic relationship the doctor has ever shared with a companion entails).
it’s no accident that out of all people she mentions River Song: one of the greatest loves of her impossibly long life, one that sacrificed herself in a library all those years ago to keep the flame burning. and the doctor can’t allow this scenario to repeat itself over and over, even if that means barring herself from emotional closeness in the process
she’d rather spare herself the hurt by denying yaz the intimacy they both so desperately crave. it’s a paradoxical act of what is simultaneously extreme selfishness and extreme selflessness, and so, so quintessentially Doctor.

sTOP my GOD youre so right we do not talk about it enough. screaammm i forgive you for being in love i forgive you for being at my side how have i never even considered that before oh my god oh mygood i need to rewatch
also 'i want to tell you everything' so true bc i cant stop wondering if she did. bc wanting is not the same as being able to. and their entire thing is wanting and not being able to. right? that keeps them apart. wanting to touch but never touching. i want to tell you everything. not im gonna tell you everything. i want to trust you. i want us to live happily ever after. i want to live. i want more. i want it all. cos the solitract doesnt want a husband, you want a whole universe. i miss it all. i miss it all so much. i know. i want to tell you everything. i want more. i want to tell you everything
excuse me for losing my mind in your inbox ✌
hey i'm 😭😭😭
the way i see it lotsd happened right after eotd so like. 15ish minutes to change into appropriate clothes and they're on the beach
she wants to tell yaz everything but she can't; she can't fix herself. not because she doesn't want to. because she might. so yaz stays in the dark, wanting and guessing, but never really knowing why the doctor can't, where she's at and where the line is
i forgive you. i forgive you for crossing the boundary because you can't have known. you can't have known that i can't stay with you so i forgive you for overstepping, for laying yourself bare and me by extension. for sharing our plans, our knowledge, as if it was something that could be shared rather than protected
do me a favor. make a wish and skim it. keep this safe. somewhere i can never find it. i've never told anyone. i wish this would go on forever.
i want to forgive you. i want you to stay. i want to tell you everything

Mini sob story moment I suppose. I wish I'd talked to more people during this era. There were times where I'd feel so alone in enjoying it, and have no one to help me out, and I'd regret not joining in on convos that I saw. Even to the end, I never managed to really stick to any 13 and or Thasmin fans to really enjoy the show with it. Hopefully, I at least get something after the era, so I can have others to feel the pain with.

Ok I’m keeping this to the Thasmin tag because I want to be in a safe place.
Yaz has been subsumed by “The Flux” repeatedly in the specials, which is heartbreaking and infuriating. Mentioning The Flux does not acknowledge Yaz or any of us who loved her/felt seen by her. And Yaz’s story, her time with Doctor, her years lost in the past, are HERS, not “The Flux’s.” Her time as a companion was the only one replaced by the show’s plot. Amy named. She wasn’t “the crack in the wall.”
In the ToyMakers show, I get that the focus was on companions who were los. But 15 mentioning Rose and River and NOT Yaz…
And if the intent was to focus on the loss, as Donna and 15 tried to cheer 14 up, why not mention Yaz, who they got home safely?
I’m freshly upset and may return with more articulate meta.
