kickstarter
the game I've been working on for the last almost 2 years is finally launching its kickstarter campaign!
Me and 3 other guys (including Kasey Ozymy, creator of Jimmy and the Pulsating Mass... this is really his game more than mine, haha) have been pouring our souls out for this game, so it'd really mean a lot if you guys could consider offering any kind of support. That includes just telling your coworkers about this weird indie RPG you found on Tumblr. Maybe consider backing the project if you like Chrono Trigger inspired games?
Any amount of support is appreciated, we're gonna need all the help we can get to make this dream a reality! Kasey Ozymy made one of my favorite games of all time, so it's an unimaginably incredible experience being able to collaborate with him.
Thank you guys for hearing me out! Thank you to everyone who chooses to support us!
EDIT: apparently the link I put to the Kickstarter originally doesn't work. Hopefully this works now? CLICK HERE FOR KICKSTARTER.

We didn't submit The Silt Verses for the Audio Verse Awards this year (we only had the first couple of eps of Season 3 out and that didn't feel merited), but I have just gone and voted, and I'm out here strongly encouraging anyone who's enjoyed their share of indie audiodrama this year to go and do the same.
In a generally ultra-budget medium, a low-cost-of-entry award like the AVAs can be a really valuable thing for creators who want to build up credibility and a voice within the space, as well as a wonderful way of ensuring actors and crew come away from the show with some much-deserved public recognition.
In addition to our usual comrades like Old Gods, Tiny Terrors and @hellofromthehallowoods, we were really excited to support some amazing new and new-ish shows like:
Ethics Town (Eskew-ballpark weird small town shenanigans with a side order of philosophy)
Wireland Ranch (big-swing political & surreal horror)
Modes of Thought in Anterran Literature (I feel like everyone's raving about this? But great environmental sound design, a fun slow-burn academic mystery, and some nice Omelas homages tossed into the mix.)

Happy 2024!
A new year has started so I wanted to give a quick primer to newer followers about my Patreon offerings and how you can support my ongoing comic, DARLIN’ AND HER OTHER NAMES...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
DARLIN’ AND HER OTHER NAMES is a werewolf-western-horror-romance comic set in 1881. The story follows two strangers who meet in a moment of mutual desperation and forge a vengeful partnership. The first installment, Part 1: Marta, was self-published online in March 2023. Since then, DARLIN’ has won an Ignatz Award and I’ve been bowled over by folks’ enthusiasm for the comic!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
At the end of the day, DARLIN’ is a passion project created in my free time and it relies on reader support to continue. In addition to helping me dedicate more time to DARLIN’, pledging to my Patreon includes perks!
Tumblr media
For $1+ a month, you receive access to:
Weekly process posts about progress on DARLIN’ and various other projects
50% off discount code on all PDFs
For $5+ a month, you *also* receive access to:
100% off discount code on all PDFs
Weekly “Director’s Commentary” posts: I serialize Part 1 of DARLIN' a page or two at a time alongside my notes, reflections, challenges, and influences for each specific page/scene. It’s a chance to dive even deeper into the nitty gritty of my process. I’ve unlocked the very first Director’s Commentary post for the public as an example: https://www.patreon.com/posts/part-1-marta-000-87167548
Tumblr media
I’m excited to keep making comics independently this year. But the amount of time I’ll be able to pursue them depends largely on the support of readers, so consider pledging if you want to see more DARLIN’ (and other weird comics) from me in the future!
And even if you aren’t able to pledge, it’s always massively helpful to share posts and tell your friends about indie work that you love, especially in our current social media nightmare.
Thank you! Every bit truly helps.

Unpopular Hobie takes/opinions
Him and Gwen actually have pretty good romantic chemistry and if it were up to me they would've been canon instead of Ghostflower with Miles having moved on from Gwen romantically and Gwen thinking of him purely platonically from the get-go
But also, they work just as well as found siblings and NOT parent-child because even with the interpretation of adult Hobie,he has Dad Friend vibes, not Actual Dad ones. The one thing i would change about romantic Ghostpunk also is making Gwen a half white afrolatina since Hobie would be poc4poc for obvious reasons
The trope of him being a popular target of thirst on Earth 138 thanks to being in a band is honestly kind of stupid because yes he's objetively handsome as fuck(/platonic)but also he's also a black person living in 1970s England.Speaking from the experience of a biracial homecountry raised afrolatino who grew up with the white side of his family only and went to predominantly white/nonblack poc schools,he definitely gets a lot of comments on his apperance but not positive ones and the best he'll get from most is a backhanded compliment
He dosen't listen to indie music but he loves indie games since part of anti-capitalism is supporting small bussiness and creators
Him and Noir wouldn't be all that close-Obviously they'd like eachother because Noir's based but i can't see him ever being into him romantically, even disregarding that he looks exactly like Peter B which would make dating him So Fucking Weird
He hates being theythemed-No shade to people who headcanon him with any pronouns or do actual respectful nonbinary rep with him but i find the idea that Hobs being nonbinary means he'd use only they/them to be just reinventing the gender binary as a genderqueer person who largely perfers he/him even if he's got they/them in his pronouns set too
He's jamaican(Honestly not entierly sure if this is in unpopular but i looked for content and found only a small amount of posts)
Related to the above,i fucking HATE the weed jokes because oh yeah,of course the jamaican guy is a stoner hahaha NOT you guys aren't funny
His favorite color is pink and that's why he turns pink when he's happiest(Around Miles because babyboy is CRUSHING and around Mayday because again,Dad Friend so obviously he loves babies)
He's not really a sexual person including his humor and tbh i find very creepy how often he's assumed to be based off his flirtations because y'all,Gwen's a MINOR and SO IS MILES and the crop top is to be gnc, stop making it weird, this is a kids movie!Plus that's not even getting into black male stereotypes
I don't like the idea of him and Miles G or Pavitr together because no hate Chaipunk shippers because i truly do think it's a good ship but all the feminization of Pavitr has ruined it for me and it's not helped by me not seeing anything between them in the movie and just casually shipping them and i think it's better if our Miles gets a Hobie and Miles G gets a Ganke seeing as our Miles was robbed of his thanks to the Mcu so it's equal. Also Prowlerpunk shippers are always so fucking goofy,STOP drawing Hobie without his beautiful black features other than his melanin
Him and Jessica have a mother-son relathionship that parallels Miles and Peter B's,including that Hobie has an actual mom but diffinerating in that he actually views her as a parental figure(while Miles sees Peter B as his older brother)-Purely headcanon based but that little interaction between them at the end screamed that they're close so she knows his attitude
Margo is one of his best friend's because obviously she is,i don't even need to explain why and Margobie/Siblings!Punk Byte both have way more of a basis than Noirpunk
His counterpart in Batman crossovers should be Stephanie Brown or Duke Thomas, not Jason Todd because they share some similarities but Stephanie and Duke are almost exactly like him(Including names regarding him and Stephanie and i've even nicknamed her Stephie so there's that)
And also,he's a Percy Jackson and Katara kinnie
Rio and Jefferson would actually fucking love him because guess what,it's stupid and transparently antiblack to automatically assume a black couple would see a black boy who's unbelivably sweet-looking but brand him as a thug who's out to abuse their child just because he's alt and isn't a fence sitter about oppression-In fact, they'd tease Miles about someone as dorky as them pulling someone as cool as Hobie and there should be gags about them loving Gwen as a person but being SO relieved he's not actually dating a white girl

On a supportive queer fandom, community, and making our first ever animation
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Making the Starship Q Star animation has largely been wonderful - we got to make a show we love and learnt a LOT. As two writers new to producing the format (Lauren had only written for kids animation) - it was a huge learning curve. A learning cliff if you will. Whilst we had to cut a lot out for time and budget, we're really proud of how they turned out within the constraints. And by the end? Lauren and I coloured most of the final episode and I did all the compositing and VFX myself (all in Toon Boom Harmony - a program neither of us had used a few months before).
Animation is also still a bit of a boys club - so we committed to finding a design and animation team that was diverse as possible, and reflected what the project was about. I'm proud to say that we managed that (out of our cast & crew of 24, only 3 were cis-men - and most were queer). We also gave opportunities to diverse creatives who hadn't had jobs in the industry before - and have since seen some of them use the experience to get more paid work. You simply love to see it! All of the cast and crew are incredibly special and brought amazing things to the show - an absolute dream team.
It hasn't been easy at all - animation is a LOT of work, and the budget didn't allow for all the support we probably needed, so it was months of unpaid work for the two if us, and a number of weeks working 15-20 hour days to get it done. But we bloody well did it!
But since the show has been out, it's been a bit of a... reality check? Having been immersed in the audio drama community with Starship thus far - we perhaps got a little too used to how incredible supportive (and perhaps queer?) everyone is.
Another animation project is part of the same initiative as we are, and it was one of the first projects released. The creator is a really lovely and talented guy who has made a special show we really enjoyed. His show went kind of viral - which is AWESOME! It's great! However due to his experience on certain other projects... some of the fans of his show... aren't necessarily our audience? And the nature of the initiative means only some projects get chosen to make more.
The first comment on YouTube a few minutes after the Ep 1 of Starship Q Star was published was "make more [the other show]". Then our socials started getting homophobic and really negative comments (and trust me I have spent a long time curating that tiktok algorithm lol). At first I thought it was weird or maybe it was just because we were being shared by a third party so the wrong audience were finding us - but then they also included comments like "[the other show] is better".
I honestly find it odd that some fans take it upon themselves to do stuff like this. Making art is hard! And liking one thing better than something else doesn't mean you have to actively hate that something else! There's room for us all to succeed (well, once we take care of that pesky thing called capitalism). And maybe remember that when it's an indie project the people who made the thing are usually the ones running the socials lol.
We are so grateful to have had so many incredible people love and champion the show in both audio and animated format. And we feel so lucky to be a part of both the queer and audio drama community (yes I know that venn diagram is a circle) - it truly is such a special supportive environment that lifts one other up.
Anyway, I'll probably delete this (way too earnest - eww) but thanks to all the lovely ones out there. We really love and appreciate all of you and all the nice comments and messages and shares. Means the world!

Working Title - Chapter 3
Tumblr media
Pairing: Dieter Bravo x OFC Belle
Rating: Mature, 18+
Word Count: 3.5k
Series Masterlist | Main Masterlist | Chapter 3 on AO3
Chapter summary: We get another perspective of the encounter in the reception area. Plus, some production logistics talk (I don’t know how movie/TV sets work, but this is my best guess). Our two agents have a moment. You and Indy prepare to head off to Hawaii.
Warnings: This chapter has some swearing, allusions to cheating and toxic relationships, and drug/alcohol references.
Tumblr media
“Mr. Bravo! So nice to see you! Let me check to see if they’re ready for you in the back, just make yourself at home.
I forgot how small this lobby was. They’ve redecorated the place, looks good. Dieter thinks to himself as he leans up against the reception desk checking his phone. Liz is nearby answering a bunch of emails that came in all at once.
“Mr. Bravo, I apologize, but they’re on a call that is just now wrapping up. It shouldn’t be too much longer, but if you’d feel more comfortable sitting down, please go ahead,” she said, motioning to the seating area.
“Oh ok, sure. Thanks. And you can call me Dieter,” he chuckles as he grabs his water bottle and heads toward the seating area.
Oh, there’s someone else here. She’s pretty. I wonder if she’s here to audition. Don’t stare Dee, act cool. He says to himself as the woman on the couch looks up at him. Holy shit her eyes are beautiful. He feels an almost magnetic pull toward her. He needs to be closer to her, so he decides to sit on the far side of the couch from her. He can sense that she’s nervous.
“Hello,” he says softly. Oh no, does know who I am? Is that why she’s nervous?
Dieter had grown accustomed to people being nervous around him. Early in his career, he hit the convention circuit hard, sitting on panels and answering questions from fans or signing autographs and taking photos for hours. He loved interacting with his fans. He never understood why people got so nervous to meet him, he was just Dieter. So he always tried to make people feel as comfortable as possible so they would have a memorable interaction with him. Giving them eye contact, a hug if they asked for it, and always asking for their name. The support of his fans always meant so much to him, especially through all of the trials and tribulations of his past.
“H-Hi,” she squeaked out.
“D-do you mind if I sit here?” Shit, get it together. She’s clearly nervous, don’t make it more awkward or weird.
“Uh. Um, yea, be my guest.”
“Thanks,” he smiles and sits on the far left side.
Despite appearing as if she’s fully involved in her phone, Liz has been keeping close tabs on what has been transpiring. If the lobby were larger she would have sat further away, but alas, she takes a seat in the chair next to where Dieter is sitting on the couch.
She has a beautiful smile too. What do I say? This isn’t like me, to be at a loss for words. This is weird. But I kind of like it. Stop staring at her.
Dieter moves his head back to face forward, although he’s still keeping an eye on the stunning stranger to his right.
Ok, think of something witty. Something witty.
“Mr. Bravo?” Dammit. “ They’re ready for you now.”
“Alright, Dee, let’s do this,” Liz says, patting him on the knee.
He lets out a breath and stands up. Should I ask her for her number or something? No, that would be creepy right? We’ve said like four words to each other. She’s probably going to think I’m some asshole actor who thinks he can bag any pretty girl. But she is beautiful.
Dieter doesn’t even realize he’s smiling at her until he sees her looking up at him again.
“Have a nice day,” he says. Ugh, that was lame. At least smile at her.
“Uh, th-thanks. Break luck. I mean, good leg. I mean, break a leg,” she says flustered before looking back down to her book. Ok, that was adorable.
“Thanks, I’ll break luck” he winks. She gives him another smile. She seems sweet. Ugh, I don’t want to leave, but I have to go before Liz gives me shit, or worse, embarrasses me. Dieter wills his legs to move, heading towards the receptionist who is motioning to the open doors. I wish I had more time.
He and Liz barely make it through the doors before he can feel her eyes on him.
“Say it and stop staring at me.
“You thought she was pretty, right?”
Rolling your eyes. “What, jealous Lizzie?” he teases.
“Why were you being so awkward? That’s not the Dee I know. Is that why you aren’t going on dates anymore, out of practice?”
“Jesus, Liz, want to get a hammer to bust my balls even more?”
“I’m just saying, she was pretty, you’re you, you barely said five words to her.”
Ugh, she’s right. I screwed it up.
Tumblr media
You, Indy, and Rhys settle into a booth at a nearby restaurant, opting for sushi to celebrate the occasion. On the way to the restaurant, Indy had been busy calling her mom and dad, and brother, so you hadn’t had a chance to debrief about her meeting … or your encounter in the lobby.
The server comes to take your drink orders and Rhys selects a few appetizers to share.
“Ok, so tell me everything and start at the beginning.”
“So when we got there, I went into a room and met Sam.”
“Ooo, how was that?” you tease, wagging your eyebrows up and down as Rhys scoffs. If someone were to design Indy’s type from scratch, it would be Samuel Garrett. Even though he was a few years younger than you both, he was everything she looked for. Tall, blonde, with a deep voice, and a Southern accent. By all accounts, he was a nice guy too.
“Cover your ears, Rhys,” Indy laughs, hitting Rhys on the shoulder as he rolls his eyes. “He was gor-geous. Holy shit, Belle, I’d climb that guy like a goddamn tree.” You both giggled.
“So I take it the chemistry was mutual then, right?”
“I think so,” she sighed. She has that look in her eyes you know well. When Indy falls for someone, she falls fast and hard.
“You definitely did,” Rhys chimed in. He was looking at his phone, trying to act like he wasn’t listening but he lived for these types of chats. He had heard many a conversation over the years and at this point, nothing really fazed him anymore.
“Ooo I forgot! I met Dieter in the hallway as I was coming back out. He was so nice! Did you see him?”
“Um…” looking down and playing with the chopstick wrapper, you were trying to decide how to get around this conversation.
“Belle…” giving you that tone a mom gives when she knows her kid is keeping something from her.
“I. Uh. Yea, I saw him.”
“Aaaand?”
At this point, even Rhys was looking up waiting for your response.
“Yea, B, what happened?”
“Jeez, you two. Nothing happened, really.” They both look at each other and then look back at you. “Ugh, ok I made an absolute goddamn fool out of myself,” you said, bringing your hands to cover your face.
“Oh, no!” Indy sat up straighter and reached her hand out to yours.
“He sat on the other side of the couch from me, but I couldn’t bring myself to say anything to him. I was literally in shock.”
“So, how did you make a fool out of yourself?” Indy asked, furrowing your brows.
“I couldn’t fucking think straight,” you were almost reliving the nervousness you felt. “ And when he got up to leave I couldn’t decide if I wanted to say ‘good luck’ or ‘break a leg’ so I ended up combining them both.”
Rhys starts to laugh.
“It’s not funny Rhys,” you scold him. Indy sarcastically punching him in the bicep on your behalf.
“And what did he say?” Indy asked, redirecting you back to the story.
“Honestly I can’t remember, I feel like I blacked out. I think he tried to make a joke or something, I don’t know. I wanted to crawl into a hole…but I do remember he winked at me.”
“Oh em gee!!” Indy shrieks, clapping her hands. “He’s basically in love with you.
You give Indy a deadpan stare. “Stop. That’s not funny. This was so embarrassing and you know I’m going to think about it and replay it like every day forever.”
“Oh stop it. That story sounds endearing as fuck. I’m sure he thought you being flustered was cute.”
“I was a totally starstruck fan. The poor guy probably just wants people to treat him like a normal person and here I was fumbling over my words like I forgot how to speak.”
“Stop spiraling. I’m sure it wasn’t as bad as you think it was.”
“Wait, do you like think he’s hot or something?” Rhys asks. You can tell he’s genuinely asking and not trying to make fun of the situation.
Indy rolls her eyes and dramatically twists her head to look over to Rhys, “Where have you been? She’s been in love with him since we were like, what Belle, in high school?”
You nod, looking down at the wrapper you have folded and unfolded like a hundred times by now.
“Well, shit, sorry!” he laughs. “I just didn’t realize it I guess. You both know I’m friends with his agent, right?”
“What?!” you both practically shouted at him.
“Rhys, what the fuck? You are like the worst wingman ever.”
He was a great professional wingman, always knowing the right things to say to get Indy an audition or find roles that she would be perfect for. Heck, he had even helped you out over the years, finding you jobs from magazine shoots to TV shows to help style. When it came to personal matters, he wasn’t as astute. The poor guy was a bit dense in that arena, so it’s really not surprising that he hadn’t made the connection.
“Can we change the subject please?” you plead.
Your server showed up at the perfect time, spreading out your appetizers between the three of you.
“Ok, let’s talk about logistics,” Rhys said as he scooped a few edamame up from the bowl.
“Yes, please. Where do we need to be and when?” you ask.
“So, we have about six or seven weeks give or take before you both need to be in Hawaii. That way you can travel, get settled, and adjust to the time zone, heck maybe even explore a little bit. I think one of the producers is going to want to get the whole cast and crew together for a kickoff party or something. He’s really into making the set feel like a family atmosphere. Could be a good opportunity for you to meet with the rest of the hair and makeup department in person before shooting officially starts,” he says motioning to you with the carcass of his eaten edamame.
“I’ll have to put you in touch with the head of hair and makeup for the shoot,” he continued. “Her name is Meredith … shit what was her last name….” he said as he reached for his phone to check his notes.
“Meredith Barton?!” you corrected him.
“Yea, that’s her!”
“Holy shit, she’s like a legend!” You couldn’t believe that you were not only going to be on a set with your best friend but working for a multi-award-winning hairstylist.
“I hope you don’t mind, but I already shared your portfolio with her. She was really impressed with you B.”
“Of course she was!” Indy beamed.
“I’ll get you and her connected. She mentioned that in these next few weeks, she wants to get you and some of the other stylists together to talk about a plan for the overlook of the shoot and the individual characters,” he stops to take a gulp of his drink. “Which reminds me, Ind you’ll be needed for some pre-production meetings, I’m still waiting on the schedule. And we’ll do some test shoots just to make sure the looks the stylists come up with are going to translate on camera.”
“Ah, this is all so exciting!”
“Thanks so much for setting all of this up Rhys,” you added.
“I’m excited for you both,” he smiled.
“Wait, where are we going to stay?” Indy asked.
“So, it sounds like the producer is setting up the whole cast and crew up at a nearby resort. He’s a part owner of it I guess so he’s buying out like half of it for the production. I think they’ll even shoot some exteriors at the property, it’s beautiful,” he said as he pulled up some photos on his phone to show you.
You and Indy lock eyes immediately, both coming to the same conclusion almost telepathically.
“Let me get this straight,” Indy starts. “We are going to be living at a beautiful resort in a paradise, for months, with the whole cast and crew…”
“The entire cast and crew?” you gulped.
“Uh, yea. I think so. Why are you two being weird?”
“Jesus, Rhys. Do we need to spell it out for you?”
“Umm…” he gives you both a confused look.
“There is going to be a love connection, I can just feel it!”
“I’ll be back, I have to go to the restroom,” you butted in. You needed to go collect your thoughts.
Once you were gone, Indy leaned over to Rhys, “So, how well do you know Dieter’s agent?”
Tumblr media
Later as he’s driving back to his apartment, Rhys hears his phone ring. Seeing who it is, he smiles and answers.
“Oh hey, Liz! How’s it going?”
“I think congratulations are in order kid!”
“Hey, thanks! Yea, I’m really happy for Indy, she’s been working toward something like this for years. I really think this will be a breakout role for her, I can feel it. We even got her best friend to work on set for hair and makeup too. Great to hear that Dieter is signed on too.”
“Yea, he seems excited about this one. I honestly can’t tell if it’s the script or the prospect of being in Hawaii for a few months.”
“How’s he doing these days?”
“Oh he’s amazing, I’m so proud of him.”
“That’s awesome,” Rhys replied. He knew how much Dieter’s previous ways had taken a toll on Liz. She cared for him like a son and it tore her up to see him hurt himself and descend into a dark place. She always kept the faith that he would turn it around.
“Wait, did you say one of Indy’s friends is going to be doing hair and makeup?” Liz asked.
“Yea! She’s in town right now, Indy kind of thinks she’s her good luck charm,” he chuckled.
“Was she there today at the offices?”
“Yea, she rode over there with us and waited in the lobby. Why?”
“We kind of ran into her.”
“Wait. Oh shit, yea I heard that she met Dieter.”
“She did. Wait? How do you- never mind. Yea, the guy got all flustered,” she laughed. “She’s a pretty girl.”
“Ha, yea she is. From what I heard, she got flustered too.”
“Shit, I’ve got another call coming in. But I just wanted to tell you how proud of you I am and of Indy too. You’ve done great work for her and I know she’s going to be amazing in the role.”
“Gee, thanks, Liz. I learned from the best.”
“We’ll chat soon, gotta go!”
Tumblr media
Six weeks later
You’ve spent the last six weeks getting everything in order to be gone for four months. You ended up running into your landlord when you got back from LA and he asked about Ryan, saying that he hadn’t seen him much. You recounted what happened and that he had moved out. Your landlord was never a big fan of Ryan, always preferring to deal with you on things related to the apartment. Once he heard about what happened, he let you break the lease without penalty.
“Get yourself a fresh start kiddo,” he said.
So you started selling pieces of furniture and other small things here and there online as you started to pack. You were truly starting to feel like you were closing one chapter and about to embark on another.
You had frequent Zoom and FaceTime calls with Meredith and the rest of the hair and makeup department, along with the wardrobe department. It was so exciting to be on this side of things; preparing for what the talent would look like on screen. You could already tell Meredith was going to be a great boss. She valued your opinion and listened, but also commanded the attention of everyone; she was a true force.
On a recent call, she told everyone that she decided that instead of assigning one person to a member of the cast, you all would be trained to float.
“I want you all to be able to work on anyone who sits in the chair. That way we can be nimble if production switches things around on us, which inevitably they’re going to do. I believe in all of you as artists and this is going to be a great opportunity to challenge yourselves each and every day.”
“Doesn’t Dieter have his own hair person?” Indy asked during your latest FaceTime call. You were set to board a plane the next day bound for Hawaii and decided to treat yourself to a night in a hotel room ordering room service with a Real Housewives marathon going on in the background.
“He does. Apparently, she had a baby recently so she’s on maternity leave. From what Meredith said, Dieter is still paying his hair stylist, as if she was still working. That way she and her partner don’t have to worry..,.” you recounted.
“Well isn’t that nice,” Indy grinned.
“Yea.” You desperately wanted to switch the subject away from Dieter. You had been thinking about him nonstop since your interaction. In reality, it probably lasted all of two minutes, but you replayed those two minutes over and over again. You were going to see him again and did not want to have another awkward moment.
Sensing that you wanted to move on to something else, Indy asked about Ryan, although frankly you would have rather awkwardly try and talk about Dieter than rehash the Ryan situation.
“Ugh, well, we kind of had a bit of a blow-up the other day. Our landlord sent him back his half of the security deposit, so he showed up.”
“What the fuck? He showed up?”
“Yea, he was asking when I was planning on telling him I was moving out.”
“And…”
“And I told him that he made that decision for me. I reminded him that he was the one who left.”
“Hell yea you did!” she snapped her fingers.
“I have been talking with Carla again, so it’s been helpful. Honestly, without her, I’m not sure how the hell I would have dealt with him showing up.
Carla has been your therapist for the better part of 10 years; you first met her when you lived in New York. Luckily because of technology, you had been able to stay connected despite the distance. In recent years you had not been the best about keeping in touch. Deep down, you knew it was because of the situation with Ryan. You weren’t prepared to talk about him to her. But when you were in the airport coming back from LA you shot her a text and you both chatted the next day. It was nice to have her back, she always managed to make you see things more clearly.
“Well, I’m proud of you. I know seeing him in person wasn’t easy.”
“Yea, it sucked. But honestly, it was a bit cathartic.. It also helped that I threw the rest of his shit out the window,” you smirked.
“You did not?!”
“I did. I may have left that part out when I told Carla the story,” you laughed.
“Bahaha. Well, it’s our secret them,” Indy says motioning like she’s zipped up her lips.
“This trip could not come soon enough. I’m so excited to see you!”
“Me too! I’m like nervous, excited, and scared all at the same time.”
“How have the pre-production meetings been going?”
“Oh, they’ve been great. It is starting to feel so real, that I’m actually going to be a lead for a show. It’s crazy.”
“How has Sam been,” you had tried to pry details of their interactions, but she had been unusually tight-lipped.
“G-good. Yea, he’s so freaking nice. And he smells so good too,” she giggles.
“Well, I can’t wait to meet him.”
“Yea, you’re going to like him I think.”
“Oh shit, Rhys is calling. I can’t wait to see you tomorrow!”
“Sounds good, I’ll text you when I get to the airport.”
After you hang up, you settle in your bed, sinking into the plush mattress. When you board the plane tomorrow, you are embarking on a new chapter. You didn’t know what the future would hold for you; you had no apartment to come back to in Orlando. You had not made any plans for after the shoot, you were just going to take things as they came.

Finally found a blog that can sympathize with Joe. Love Taylor and sure they are both going through some terrible heartache. But I think this impact Joe the most. We are in no place to speak on someone else’s mental health but at least we know he has anxiety. And rumors of him withdrawing from her leading up to tour, the noticeable weight gain and baggy eyes in movie premieres, I think there’s more than we know.
I’ve been through a withdrawal period before because I was feeling like I was a failure. Lots of restless nights, weight gain, self isolation and feeling worthless. I took a break from everyone to heal and learn to love myself again. So I can kinda relate to him why he wanted a break. Everyone cope differently and we cannot fault them for how they chose to do it. We all have our own demons to fight.
We do not know what goes behind closed doors. But based on facts given, I am comfortable to say he is a gentle, sweet, caring soul, does not read into tabloids, brought up loyal and kind by his mother(according AOTGYLB). Never used her name to gain fame and is a very private person. How can people say he intentionally leaked this out? The breakup is the last thing he would ever want to go public.
If he cared about the imbalance in their fame status, he would be going for commercial movies instead, not indie type films. I just don’t like how he is being portrayed as a person through these news outlet. It’s very dehumanizing to do.
Ikr! thanks for all this. I remember his quote about wanting to be seen as a human.
You are right. His newest pics are really bad. Like his hair is weird, he has defs gained weight campared to his physic just some months ago.
Tbh, the biggest thing is Tay has her fans, her songs, her friends and family with her.
Joe is somewhere else far away from home as speculated and maybe before the breakup, means he's been alone when it happened and is rn . He has to change his musical taste, even his fav band might be hurting him . His friends and family are away. All he has is some co workers he doesn't know very well. Idk if that's good, or bad. Cause how much you'd want nothing to remind you of the absence of your loved one, you just kinda need someone who knew your relationship with them.
Also about the GOD DAMN ARTICLES. It's impossible trust me. And why would they do that? Likeeeeee his team should be outta questions imo cause well, his team is too lowkey to do that. like the possibility is just 0.001%
Moreover, we should support them both. The breakup is the wort thing that could happen to them and it is done.
So instead of blaming and hating, we just need to support them. Imo. This is that type of a break up you can't blame anyone.
All we can do is love and pray and be positive and wish for the best.

It's Not the Years, It's the Mileage Finale: Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny (Comission for WeirdKev27)
Tumblr media
Hello all you happy archelogists and welcome to the final installment of my Indiana Jones Retrospective, It's Not the Years, It's the Milleage. For those just joining us for the epic conculsion, i've covered all four previous Indy films over the past few months, from the good with great action set pieces, iconic lines, and deft character work, to the bad with the uncomfortable amount of brown face, temple of dooms theme park version of india and support of colonolisim, and Crystal Skulls sterotpyical 'savage tribesman", to the just plain weird with aborted ideas such as a haunting in scottland, a chess game to the death, sun wukong vs indiana jones, and an out and out alien invasion which Indy makes out during suprising no one.
IT's been one long, LONG journey and today.. it ends, as does the film franchise. With Dial of Destiny. Dial is the main reason we did this: a fresh fim with ford, with a fresh director in Logan maestro James Mangold, a final chapter for the ages.. and it has been recived with a resounding
Tumblr media
Yeah while there was some hype for this film from Fans of Mangold or Indy (Of which i'm now both) it's now gotten to the point Wikipedia has out and out labeled it a box office bomb and Naturally the failure of this film has been taken with grace and restraint by the internet
Tumblr media
It hasn't helped that Indy has come out in a summer with plummeting box office from usual money makers, so people are only more on their "Why aren't people seeing these films" kick. When really the reasons aren't new. We have "Doing the same shit a diffrent day instead of going with what was new and working " (Transformers rise of the beasts), "Another film outboxing it" (Elemental), "The company behind it simply not promoting it at all" (Ruby Gilman, which I intend to review at some point), " or "Oopsie we hired a pedophile as our leading actor, have no idea where we were taking this franchise when we started this film, and our company is ran by an evil overlord no one likes whose actively made the media landscape worse ever since he took over, better hope our promotoinal tactics work..."
Tumblr media
The issues aren't new, their simply finding hitting people over the head.. and that's what happened here. Indy had an uphill battle: I was only invested at first because James Mangold was directing it and Logan is still one of the best superhero movies ever made. I got more invested thanks to this retrospective. Given Disney's slipshod treamant of star wars and terrible treatment of last jedi as well as the mcu being a mess right now, it's not a huge leap that many audiences really didn't want to gamble on ANOTHER disney live action movie that just looked okay, no matter how much Phoebe Waller Bridge or Antonio Bandareas it had. While it's sad as I honestly don't think the film deserved THIS much of a bomb.. I can't blame audiences for waiting for Disney Plus. We simply live in an era now where most people have tons of streamers or will get one for a month to watch one movie and anything else they've caught up on. We're simply entering an era where having a big brand name isn't a guarantee and in this case can be a curse if that name is disney. Big franchises can work, see Spider-Verse and Scream VI making great money, but you have to have something to offer.
Tumblr media
So come with me under the cut as we see if Indy has just that or is best left in the past
MASSIVE SPOILERS AHOYHOY
When I'm Gone, He's Gone
As you'd expect, Lucas still wanted to make a 5th film after Skull, with Speilberg and Ford on board as always. This time though..
Tumblr media
Lucas himself went to the press saying he wanted to do something new and Speilberg was stuck in the past... which I translate as Lucas once again went kinda nuts on the premise while , much like after Temple of Doom, Speilberg wanted something a tad more grounded to avoid making the same mistake twice. It comes off as the two just could never quite agree on what to do and eventually.. decided to let the franchise move on without him, selling it and the rest of Lucasfilm to Disney. Disney naturally wanted an indy film right away and after getting the distribution rights one year later in 2023.. it took them a decade.
Tumblr media
Yeahhh while we got the sequel trilogy pretty fast in hollywood time it took a good decade for Indy to put his hat on. At first there were rumors floated about about recasting, then it was settled on ford, then Speilberg was set to direct and the film proceded to go through a ton of writers, from Crystal Skull's david koepp
Tumblr media
And even Dan Fogelman of This is Us royalty was floated as one of the writers. The film also got delayed thanks to Speilbergs work on Ready Player One and the Post, before he eventually stepped off all together. He claimed it was to pass it on to a fresh director, but it really feels like his heart wasn't in it anymore, and it was best someone whose heart was took the lead.
Enter James Mangold, director of The Wolverine, Logan and Kicker of ass. Mangold was a solid choice and my book and along with his usual co-writers Jez and John Henry Butterworth, who I assure you are real people but cannot assure you aren't old timey prospectors sent forward in time, hashed out the script.
Casting went smoothly, as did filiming, with the only hiccup being production's start being delayed because of COVID. They shot in morocco, england, ireland and spain, along with the us as you'd expect. Speilberg wasn't entirely detached as he still advised and watched dalies, ultimately loving the final product. So now we can actually look at that product let's start with how it writes Indy himself. The Mileage Adds Up
One of the things that made me not really enjoy Doom or Crystal.. was a lack of character work. Indy was about the same as when he started the adventure in contrast to Raiders and Last Crusade taking him on a wonderful character journey, in the former getting his passion back and in the later reconcliing with his dad. Dial of Destiny dosen't reach those highs, but I still think it does a decent job. The opening.. is okay detailing Indy having an adventures in the last day sof the third reich, setting up both Helna's Dad and our big bad, as well as Archimedes Dial, basied on the real life Antyhkiera Mechanism. I really do love the dial as a plot device as it's a departure, being the only one of the five to not involve a god of some sort, and yes the alien counts. It's just a time machine a famous philospher made. It's still fucking neat, I mean IT'S A TIME MACHINE A FAMOUS PHILSOPHER MADE, but it's a bit more grounded while still being pretty damn nifty.
So while the intro is mostly.. eh for me, what it does really well... is contrast the indy we know.. with where he is in 1969: Unlike Crystal Skull, which glossed over the massive amount of time passed, here were with an indy who feels both his age.. and that he's been left behind by the world. That time has taken everything from him: his friends, his father, his marriage.. and his son. He's left to yell at the neighbors, go to a class that dosen't pay attention and have a retirment party he clearly dosen't want. Granted his retirment does feel like a missed opportunity as wikipedia mentioned it pre-release as being forced out due to speaking out against operation paper clip, something that I either missed.. or more likely simply ISN'T in the film. It's a real shame, the idea is great it's just not present. This creates a really intriguing Parallel: Indy at the start of the last adventure of his we'll see is a broken down man whose years of adventuering have left a mark on him, who is estranged from Marion, has not a ton to live for, and is clearly only loosely holding it together. And the Indy we met in Raiders.. is a broken down man whose years of adventuring left a mark on him, is estranged from marion, has not a ton to live for and is clearly only loosely holding it together. The diffrence is how tired Indy is. In his late 30's he's beaten a bit and reduced to graverobbing.. but the minute he gets a real assignemnt int he grail, he jumps to it. He has his job, he has his friendship with marcus, and he's able to fix things with marion. He's not completely gone, he's just lost. Indy in Dial... has watched all his friends and his son, more on that in a minute, die, his marriage fall apart, and his job slip out under him. Without his job.. he's a man without a purpose.
This also ironically creates another Scrooge McDuck parallel, another bit of symmetry and one I didn't plan on till I started writing this and thought of the story: Indy reminds me a lot of Scrooge in the final part of Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck. Both are seasoned adventueres who have either pushed away anyone they have left or lost them and feel they just have nothing left but to slowly rot away.
And like Scrooge it takes a bolt of inspiration from the new generation after him to get Indy back in the game. In this case it's the highlight of the film, Helena Shaw, played by the wonderful, funderful fleabag, Phoebe Waller-Bridge. WB likely dosen't need any introduction but just in case she was showrunner of the successful and inventive stage show turned amazon prime show fleabag, showran killing eve and in general is pretty delightful. So it's no huge suprise she's great as Helena Shaw, daughter of Marcus Indy's sidekick for the intro who became obessed with our titular macguffin, Archemedis Dial, which can travel through time some time, though not to the end of all man kind. Helena is a neat character in that they managed to make her distinct while still giving her enough similarties to indy to serve well as his shadow, his ghost of sins past, him in his prime. She's also a brilliant archelogist, has a kid sidekick like indy did in temple of doom with Teddy Kumar (Ethann Isidoore), sells priceless artifacts for a profit, has a messy love life, kicks plenty of ass, and tries to command every room she's in. What helps seperate them is their demeanor: Indy is gruff, snarky and surly. While Helena can snark with the best of them, she's fast talking, fast thinking, and tends to use charm as much as the old Indy Guile both heroes posses. The main diffrence is rather than sell to museums, she sells to private collectors...
Tumblr media
Okay the REAL difference is that she's only in it for the money while Indy at least, on some level, cared about the history even at his lowest. Helena just sees all her father could do and all she learned from being around him before his passing as a way to get. Once again like Indy.. she had a father who cared more about some big treasure than her child.. and a godfather who cared more about what was going on in his life than ever checking up on her. She's a person whose been left to her own devices and feels she's doing just fine.. but honestly could be putting her talents to better use. Maybe not in a school like indy, but she could help return artifacts to their countries... probably still for a pretty penny, but not just to some random asshole to sit in his den.
You can tell dealing with her just makes Indy feel even more tired, which is somehow possible after all he's been through. He's once again seeing a ghost of his past and this time can't seem to get it through her head. When she celebrates shortly after his friend Renaldo dies, he has to sharply remind her. Nothing seems to get through to her.. till we get to THAT scene. Probably the best scene of the film. The climax is awesome.. but it's this one moment. On a boat at night, Helena asks Indy what he'd do with the dial, clearly thinking some grand adventure.. instead Indy: I'd stop my son from enlisting Helena: And how would you do that? Indy: I would tell him that he would die, that his mother would be overcome with a grief so intense that his father would be unable to console her, and that it would end their marriage. The sheer PAIN Ford conveys during that monologue.. may be the finest acting he's ever done. You can just FEEL Indy's loss; his son is gone, his marriage is torn, and he blames himself for both. It gives a horrible pathos to why he's so broken down. Both developments.. coudl've been really cheap. With how much everyone but me seems to hate mutt, and how rightly no one can stand shia suprise these days, most were expecting..
Tumblr media
Instead Mutt's death is used as the catalyst for Indy's slow spiral into dispair. He would've been happy in retirment.. but he lost his son, his wife.. he's a man truly with nothing left he feels. And while he gets some old spark back unlike Scrooge.. he's fighting it every step. He dosen't want an adventure, he dose'nt want anything but his son back, and he knows damn well that even if the dial could... the sad truth is it likely has some horrible cost to it. The grail gave eternal life but bound you to a spot. The Skull gave you the knowledge of an unknowable alien god, but drove you mad. The arc killed anyone who looked. If the Dial even works... he knows it can't bring his son back, and he's only going after it because it's better in a museum than in the hands of Nazis. We also see a change in Helena. She goes from following Indy's lead out of nececity, to seeing his point, to seeing the beauty of the world instead of just the dollar signs. She still wants the money.. but she starts to see the beauty in history instead of the dollar. I also like that this isn't easy on Teddy, who sees her postive changes as coming between him and his surrogate mom, when really she fully intends to stick with Teddy no matter what and shows nothing but loyalty.. and in the end.. they dont' really finish that arc
Tumblr media
I like Teddy a lot, and I wish this had more of a bow on it, though we do get him taking down a nazi and trapping him to drown and later getting into a dogfight. Teddy slaps is what i'ms aying> He dosen't have a ton of deep character to explore, but he's fucking great.
This all really cumulates in the climax.. which is so great i'd rather save it for after we cover one last major character, our antagonist. Our big bad is Mads Mikkelsen as Jurgen Voller, a thereoticain who wants the dial. At first Indy assumes, as most of the audience would that Voller simply wants the dial, which he's shown to obess over to win the war for hitler. Turns out Voller's plan is more complex. We see in the intro how Voller is the ONLY one who both sees the dial's value among the nazi's and the writing on the wall: Hitler is almost gone, he fucked them over. It's over. And thus the horror of Voller isn't like with Thot , at the giant horrifying nazi machine and all their power, and more at evil allowed to hide in plain sight. At a society who forgives horrible people because their useful. Voller got a free pass thanks to operation paperclip.. and the film shows while that idea got us tons of advances including space flight.. it came at the cost of giving horrible people real power and influence. The president is outright giving voller a MEDAL. And he hasn't changed: a truly chilling bit has him talking to a black bellhop delivering meal and asking where he came from.. and dismissing him saying he came from america. Voller is every bit the white supremacist monster he ever was, he's completely loyal to the idea of the nazi's. .just not to hitler. Voller's whole plan isn't to help hitler.. but to take him out, replace him and have someone compitent win. And he only gets as fara s he does because the goverment willingly works with him, gives him agents, goes after Helena and the dial. They know what he his but fully aid and abet him. Sure they eventually realize he's gone rogue, that his pet agent is entirely in his pocket.. but they don't turn on him till far too late and with one of their great agents dead. Concidentaly I feel Agent Mason is wasted: she's the calm rational agent.. but she's also the only major black character in the film and gets killed by a nazi. That's.. entirely fucked up and while I suspect inteitonally fucked up it just dosen't work for me.
Voller is also once again, much like with Belloc, an evil mirror of indy: Both are geniuses who adore history.. but one's a good person despite being gruff while one seems harmless when we first meat him but is actually a total monster. Mads does a great job showing just how evil the guy is without going over the top. Voller is determind to change history... and he does.. just not how he wanted to.
This Ain't 1933!
The climax.. is fucking awesome. Like Crystal Skull it goes beyond what the series had done before, if not more so. It's arguably even MORE over the top. But it works. For those who haven't seen the film... INDY GOES BACK IN TIME. The dial DOES indeed work.... but it's set up to ONLY go back to this point. Helena points out the idea of "loaded decks' earlier.. and realizes the dial is one. Archimedes only left it behind to create a stable time loop.
Indy going back into actual history is nuts, entirely and my jaw dropped at it.. but it's so damn fun. Our heroes not only have to escape the plain and get the dial back after it drops onto the coast, but survive the Siege of Syracuse, the roman invasion that eventaully resulted in Archimedes end. So we have two planes flying overhead, arrows everywhere and nazis versus romans. It's over the top but not in a way that really undermines the franchise, and frankly as what's intended to be the final act of indy ever, it's a fitting finale: the man whose explored history in the present.. gets to LITERALLY go to the past for his final adventure. I do get how not everyone will agree, and it won't work for everybody, this may be a bit tooo over the top, but I love it and feel it nicely ties up everyone's character arcs.
For Voller he gets to join history.. but instead of "fixing" it like he wanted he dies horribly and is forgotten to history only the "dragon" (his palne" is left.. and cleverly foreshadowed earlier when Teddy watches a puppet show. His nazi's all die and it's glorious to watch nazi after nazi go down from arrows or our two heroes escaping the plane while teddy takes the rest down with the help of a hapless pilot.
We then get the payoff for both Helena and Indy, as Indy gives the dial to archimedes.. and plans to stay. After all we established he's lost everything... why would he go back? He'll die soon.. but he's cconvinced he'll die soon back in the present. It's Helena who'se ultimately changed realizing both the value of history.. and ultimately the movie's moral: you can't change the past, but you can live for today. Helena can't change her awful upbringing or the things she's done.. but she can be better. And Indy can't save his son from death, save archimedes from death or be a better husband to marion during the greving process.. but he can be better to her and still live now. He still has so much to offer. He taught helena to love history and to try and be better. He gave his son a better life even if it was sadly cut short. He can be better. And when he can't be convinced the easy way she proves she's fully earned her way to being indy's succesor and just clubs him and takes him back (the dial has to go back with them as archimedes needs to make his own). The end scene also mostly works for me: Indy is back at his apartment.. but finds he's not alone as when he woke up there last time: Not only has Helena forgiven him, having realized much like Indy himself that warts and all, he's family, but Sallah, who I haven't gotten to talk about is here. Sallah is great in this film, not only helping Indy when he needs to lay low but enocuraging his friend it's not over. It's also nice to see Indy helped him and his family immigrate and that he's teaching his grand kids egyptian. It's also a nice way to still have davies play the roll.. but have him get a bit more depth and make up for a white guy playing the roll.
And last but not least.. Marion returns, and the two reconcile. I thought it was a bit easy when I frist saw it.. but I see now i'ts more the idea they have a long road ahead.. but both are willing to see it together.. Indy admits he was wrong and Marion is willing to give him another shot. For the third time but at least this time it's likely she just needed some psace to realize he wasn't being callous he just wasn't processing his grief.. and now he's ready to.. maybe they have a shot. It's a nice way to close out the films: Indy's life isn't over, he's got friends, he's got his wife.. and there's always another rainbow.
Assorted Other Stuff: The action set pieces as usual are fucking great, my faviorites easily being the climax and the diving adventure. The latter reminded me a lot of Tin Tin, Red Rackam's Treasure. Antonio Banderas is great as Reynaldo and I only wihs he had a bigger part.. and survived. It's not a huge suprise, saying Antonio Banderas is great. While I LIKED the finale with Marion, I'm with Karen Allen. They could've used her more. She deserves better dammit. WHy is it with the sequels they just can NEVER get bringing her back right?
Last but not least.. ther'es this weird subplot only brought up in the first two acts where the government frames indy for Murder that just.. never gets resolved? Like they never adressed it and as far as I can tell there's no resolution. Now granted I still think Indy isn't going to be arrested: He's clearly been unconcious for a week and Helena did have to get him back into the US, so it's likely the goverment found out about voller, got a debrief from helena.. and agreed to clear her and indy's record and absolve him of murder in exchange for never talking about this to anyone, as a Nazi escaping and killing one of their agents , after they pardoned the guy wouldn't look good. But we needed a line. It's easily the most baffling decision in otherwise a really godo film.
So finally we're , like indy back where we started.. was the film that bad?
Tumblr media
When writing the reviews for Crystal Skull and Temple, I honestly hated the films MORE the more I thought abotu them, the more I found wrong, the more I realized how little they did. With this film. it's the opposite. The more I examine dial, the more I find to like. The character arcs, the action, the payoff. It's not perfect, again Indy is still kinda wanted for murder among other little plot gaffes, but I do think Dial is a solid entry in the series and better than both temple and skull at capturing what made the series graet. It dosen't nail it perfectly.. but it's still a fun ride with some really good character work and phenominal performances. Really indy failed.. because no one cares outside of fans of the franchise. As my brother put it when talking about this very film recently, kids don't know indy. It's not the big hit with kids star wars was and is. Star Wars will likekly rebound someday because Kids still dig it and kids will grow up with the sequels the way I grew up with the prequels, warts and all. Disney just assumed Indy was enough to carry it and he wasn't. I'm sad at it because not only is this a good film, but I was hoping for more pulp adventure films. But i'm also happy at what we got and to have done this journey. I saw the good, and the bad. And I saw a franchise I ended up really loving. In the end I got what I needed out of this franchise

OTW Candidate Q&As
There’s some interesting stuff in there, but the upshot of this post is that only two of the candidates mentioned supporting a decentralization of fandom, and only one of those candidates actually reached out to Walter and I to ask how we got otw-archive running and the effort it took.
Anh P. still remains the best, in my opinion, for having a genuinely balanced view of not only what problems OTW is facing, but also in how to look into fixing those.  They also go into their thought processes as to how and why they’re thinking the way they are without coming across as some kind of weird HR Generalist, which can’t be said for some of the candidates.
I appreciate the shoutout, but more than that, I absolutely appreciate that they took the time to listen and discuss ways to decentralize fandom and make it so that the Organization for Transformative Works is actually -- get this -- for more than just this one archive and one wiki.  That they collaborated with Walter and I to do something about the problem, even before being elected, because they’re committed to fandom (and diversity in fandom) and want OTW to be for fandom.
Which is not the feeling I got from almost all of the other candidates.  Kathryn S. was the only other one discussing supporting other, indie archives (and gave Walter and I a shout out as well), but didn’t contact us directly.
(Even though it’s frankly embarrassingly easy to get ahold of us, and we also are two incredibly geeky people who would love to talk about our archives and the love behind them that had us putting in this work and giving hours and hours of time to it.)
Anyway, you can read all of the statements here.  In terms of who I am willing to personally vote for, Anh is still number one contender.  They not only impressed me when they reached out, their answers are balanced and detailed and explained.
Second might be Kathryn.
The rest need to stop circling the wagons around AO3 as if somehow having a giant monopoly on fandom, and borg-assimilating struggling archives before offering them any help staying alive, is a good thing.  OTW was never meant to be just AO3.  I remember when it started.  A couple of those candidates are frankly embarrassing in their answers; AO3 is never gonna love you back, you couple I’m talking about, so maybe stop worshipping the golden idol.
There ya have it.  Ad Astra’s founder and archivist is officially endorsing Anh P. now for OTW Board.  And if you want to talk about how Walter and I did it (and how we want to help others to!), you know, we’re right here.
My two cents to rub together, for what they’re worth.  Thanks.

Thank you for sharing all these articles and opinions about the wga SAG aftra strike.
Do you think the studios will keep refusing any kind of negotiation till October? I feel like this is really a suicide, but they seem so sure they're gonna win. Do they know something we ignore or they're just too arrogant?
Hm, why is Brad Pitt better than Gaiman? I thought Gaiman was on strike too. Maybe I missed something
Re: Studios
Right now, they're counting on fans listening to their Studio Teachers Pets to not cut the cord. Zaslav has bragged people will stay subscribed because of their giant content libraries, for example. Amazon has Gaiman doing cartwheels promoting his stuff for Amazon, even if he can weakly peep, I did it of my own will! Meanwhile, Witcher writers are being held over the fire for doing it once, because it breaks the image of solidarity. As per the articles of people doing things pissing off others like Silverman by scabbing without ~technically scabbing and so on, the studios are sitting smug going "eh, we'll get 'indie's. We'll get money from subscribers watching our old stuff. We'll get international films" until people stop making use of the loopholes for personal gain on things the unions can not ~force or even ~gives permission to do. But then you have those that ARE shutting down even WITH permissions and excuses. Because what's right is fucking right.
Brad Pitt was under scrutiny until lately for continuing to film something overseas, which appeared to lack solidarity, but he just shut his shit down. Meanwhile, I'm sitting here heartbroken, and realizing, everything I ever believed about Gaiman was a lie. He was formerly one of my favorites. He is rapidly propelling himself towards being one of the most vile ~technical not a scabbers I can see that I will never allow myself to support again, while monkey training fans who aren't willing to think deeply.
This right here: I'm going to remove who made the statement, and paste David Zaslav over, so you can see how it looks when it's Not An Author Of A Favorite Blorbo
DAVID ZASLAV, MAYBE??? (in this thought exercise)
Tumblr media
Pretend Iger or Zaslav said that. A person who is naturally in solidarity will just say, "Yes, it will impact us, even if we have different guilds, we stand in solidarity and will not continue production". It is very, very fuckin weird corporate speak to go, Well, WGA and SAG are striking against my show carrier, so We Can Not Use People From Those Unions. That's. That's big ick. Put the picture of a CEO you know is a dickbag next to it and read it again. That doesn't even say we don't intend to continue. Just who can't be involved. Similarly, he has used phrases like "As part of WGA, I Have To Strike", not want to. Scroll his wall. Where's his real big support?
Things I see: Watch my show, watch my show, tell people to watch my show (advertise for me), I Wish My Distributor Would Comply, Me, Me Me Me, Me.
And then a friend of mine that worked in comics shattered my heart worse. They were basically like, yeah, duh, he's from the comic book space since the 80s. They're non-union and even anti union. Not everyone in unions like even being in the union. Comics are a very Every Man For Himself environment and toxic as fuck about competition. He does not know how to be a meaningful contributor to a union.
So then I sat there, with my heart in pieces in my hands, and went to unlist my Good Omens videos, because I can't bring myself to look at it again. Other podcasters are closing up shop for the same reason. Any influencer that's even not union yet, caught advertising for studios whether paid or ORGANIC EVEN, can be blocked from SAG entry in the future, and some producers like the one in question is fine with bright eyed fans of themselves unwittingly crushing their dreams for their own gain. People even with union waivers to work a job are going, no this is wrong. No, I pass. No, don't do this, we're in this together, everyone takes hits.
Again I point to Witcher fandom. The guy was like well it ~TECHNICALLY didn't break the rules but I see how it breaks Image Of Solidarity so I'll delete my tweets about it. Then on tumblr side you get the little content addict goblins trying to crush out anyone that IS making the personal decision to restrain or cut cords because, frankly, Neil is being loud as shit.
Meanwhile SAG or WGA members are deadass like. Can someone explain to me how this shit isn't scabbing? (Not Neil, specifically, but the image of it) Like, tell me, please, actors and producers beg, how is this not scabbing, while we're all making sacrifices.
The reason studios are smug is because they know. They know it is human nature to climb over people, to find workarounds, to try to place themselves first, and that they can starve the guild until people start causing dissent by acting like this. People afraid of losing their cuts. People afraid of losing rank in the market and, while retweeting YEE GUILD stuff, still maneuvering to try to put themselves above the others sweating with them in a market that's about to crunch and restrict job availability, still posing themselves forward individually while citing Thin Lines. You know what I think of when I hear about Thin Lines? Blue ones.
Meanwhile creators of other shows like say, Gotham Knights, just deadass stopped tweeting about their shit, even things Not Directed By Studio. Because it's fucking selfish, and looks bad, and many have narrowed it down to "THANKS FOR THE FANART" or "<3333 thanks" to fans, not HEY, TUNE IN AT 8/7 CENTRAL AND ADVERTISE MY SHIT LOL "THIN LINE"
There are things they can not enforce in text while being fair (or in cases like secondary boycott damages, announce/enforce at all as anything more than a suicide bomb last ditch effort when they're willing to dead stop to the cascading legal battles). And there are people that cartwheel past and through those like greased pigs going WELL TECHNICALLY. There are those that make mistakes and go "shit sorry didn't mean to look like that I'll delete". There are those apologizing for not talking to fans about their work more. And then there's the motherfuckers broadcasting how to watch and the technicalities their production could be uninterrupted under.
Ever notice Neil doesn't say "we?" it's not "we're in this together." "We decided," it's not We. He, who "has" to strike, and is relentlessly advertising his shit and just saying, well we just cant use WGA/SAG people, addresses it as a detached thing: The WGA has said. The WGA's intent. The WGA, some distant other party he seems to feel unfortunate as an IP owner to be part of, someone who makes infinitely more money than your average working class writer or actor. Pay the fuck attention to who is going "JUSTICE FOR ME BUT NOT FOR THEE" or worse, just talks about the strike like a sidebar inconvenience fans can just hope stops messing up their shows, rather than centering the lives of creatives being fucked up.
Gaiman is worth over 18 million. He is not one of these little barely paid people struggling. And he is increasingly proving, not only does he not give a shit, he at best is treating it like an inconvenience and encouraging fans to focus on and support his product, and thus the studios, rather than centering the dialogue on the strike and the suffering workers like everybody else is. Even when his actions don't blatantly betray him, his verbage does. This is why it's never "we", but "the WGA", as a different, detached body, and not being able to use WGA/SAG people. Like, ah, I see, you're only union because it's mandatory to join the union in the US, and you didn't want locked out of the US scene, but the union itself is a fucking inconvenience to you. This is the opposite of Neat.

We’re back baybee
Tumblr media
after a couple months of downtime, BURNAWAY is back online. Getting back into the process of writing about it has been daunting. We didn't make the previous campaign's funding goal, but for most of the team, that was our very first shot at something like this. We know now where we were off the mark, and how we're gonna make this time different.
Writing about game content feels weird. I think because, ideally, everything I write here or on arnamantle's other socials is all supposed to be Content™. Marketing. Sharable and algorithm-friendly. And I'm not even opposed to that, ostensibly. If you want people to play your game, if you want people to pay you for it, they gotta know it exists first. I think this feels weird not because I know its purpose as a marketing tool, but more due to how seamlessly good other designers and writers are at it. Some people just naturally love talking about their games, their progress in their creation. Some people love using social media to talk about it. So naturally, those voices float to the top of the dogpile, people take notice and follow, and that turns into a beneficial cycle that grows their audience. You could call that proclivity for talking about oneself and one's creations a talent, or a natural advantage; I don't think there's much difference at some point. I am very much not one of those people.
In these past couple months of reflection and ponderance on this project, I've managed to figure out something pretty essential to me; the games and content I'm making are less comparable to others than I was expecting, or fearing they would be. In a tightly knit field like indie ttrpgs, comparing your stuff to other peoples' is such a natural thing to do, you won't realize you're doing it at first. And you'll start seeing people who are doing the thing you want to do better than you're doing it, or doing the thing you thought only you had come up with. In the past 10-15 years there's been an explosion of ttrpg content, on a scale unlike anything before. It's daunting, even to someone who's been around awhile, like me. There's more attention on the space, higher production values, more money being thrown around. It's very easy to get intimidated. I certainly have been at times, seeing some people seemingly come from nowhere and establish incredible success within a couple years.
The obvious moral is, comparison bad, boo. But as any other owner of a human brain knows, it's not that simple. The thing that finally seems to be untangling that mental knot for me, as I mentioned earlier, is the realization that other people's games have less overlap with mine than I thought. It's just... harder to articulate the differences, because a lot of them are pretty deep below the aesthetic surface. They have to do with how people interact with the game system, and each other.
I want to make sure that the end result of BURNAWAY is something that holds true to my game design approach. It won't be perfect or even particularly pretty, but it will be a step forward. Anyway, I'll start being more specific about what that approach is in future posts. This is the big, long, "I'm back in action" post. Most other posts aren't gonna be anywhere near this long. But they will, with any possible luck and divine grace, be somewhat consistent.
Thanks to anyone who's supported BURNAWAY thus far, and welcome to anyone who's new.

*(but can be public too if you want!)
hi love ! you're from argentina right? i thought i'd seen posts about it. anyway, maybe a weird question but i'm going to argentina in a month. do you have any tips, must-sees, good restaurants you'd like to share? i always trust people who live(d) there a lot more than, like, tripadvisor. if you don't want to share or if this is weird that's fine too !! either way thank you <33
hi love!! sure, absolutely. I'll answer it publicly in case people also want to know about what to do in buenos aires. okay, i'll try to keep it short. idk how many days you'll be visiting but:
Long Post under the cut lmfao
must-sees:
Caminito (this is located in the neighbourhood of La Boca)
Teatro Colón
Avenida Corrientes and surroundings (Corrientes Av. and 9 de Julio would be like our times square lol)
Palermo Soho (this is a neighbourhood that has a lot of clothing stores, cool restaurants and caffes and from thursday to saturday night there's always a good plan waiting for you)
Jardín Botánico (this is in the neighbourhood of palermo which you'll see is divided in different names, Palermo Soho, Palermo Chico, etc etc so it might be confusing at first lol)
Recoleta is another neighbourhood that's nice to walk around, especially the area that's close to the cemetery and Plaza Francia. If you walk through Libertador Av. or Figeroa Alcorta Av. you'll see pretty buildings and museums. Here you can also see 'The Flower' as we call it lol, which is an artistic sculpture that opens its petals by day and it closes them by night.
San Telmo is a must for tourists but as someone who was born and raised in the city i fucking hate this neighbourhood lmfao, it's filled with people. bUT it's cute, you have like a street market where people sell their crafts and you have cute caffes and restaurants.
Puerto Madero is also a nice place to walk around as well
If you have time you can travel by bus to Villa Ocampo, a beautiful house owned by Victoria Ocampo who was a writer.
Tigre is a neighbourhood outside of Capital Federal (as well as Villa Ocampo) and it has a cute outdoor market filled with caffes, restaurants and shops. You can travel there by bus but it's fastest if you take the train.
For Food:
Petanque is a french restaurant, CARNE is good for eating hamburgers and Sagardi is a spanish/basque place. All of them are in San Telmo.
In Palermo Soho you have a shit ton of restaurants/bars so you can truly pick the one that stands out the most but my faves are: 1) Overo Bar 2) Club Eros (you might not give 2 cents for this one bc it might not look so aesthetically pleasing on the outside but my god they have the best milanesas ever) 3) Local Support (it's like THE place for all the indie and sad boys/girls wannabes of the city, the vibes aren't my cup of tea but the pizza is DELICIOUS) 4) Rey de Copas 5) Soria Bar "
Pizzería Güerrin, best pizza ever.
Il Quotidiano is my favorite sort of "mainstream" italian restaurant, the food is incredible and the prices are quite good honestly.
Presidente Bar if you feel fancy
Dadá Bistro for another fancy night but this one is smaller and usually there's also a shit ton of tourists lol. It's one of my favorite places even tho my friends say that it's for older people u.u (what does that say about me lmfao)
For something even more fancy you can enjoy a delicious merienda or dinner in Palacio Duhau
El Mirasol is one of my favorite places to eat asado, it's quite expensive tbh but the food is delicious
i Fresh Market is one of my favorites bar/restaurant in Puerto Madero
Sifón Sodería for a good vermut
Buenos Aires is FILLED with birrerías and my favorite ones are: 1) Patagonia (this one is quite mainstream but the beer is good) 2) Hormiga Negra... and i can't remember more LMFAO, if i remember i'll definitely let you know
Cuervo Café and The Shelter have delicious coffee. Cuervo is in Palermo and The Shelter is in Retiro.
Birkin is another caffe and it's also quite good, you can also have lunch/dinner here
and that's what's at the top of my head for eating, i know there's more in my brain but i can't remember lol. again, if i remember more places i'll definitely let u know!!

2023 Accomplishments, 2024 Hopes
I did a lot of stuff this year, so I'm gonna talk about stuff I'm happy about accomplishing this year!
Art
I made the most money ever for commissions! Almost $900 I hope to make more next year!
I finished quite a few comics as well as Cherry's first journal! Comics have always been quite difficult for me to finish, so I'm proud of being able to do a handful of them!
I got to be a featured artist in an app! That was a pretty cool experience getting to test out and draw in an app! Also getting paid to do so!
Next year, I would like to try an improve on some things with my art, finish more art, and maybe get another art job!
-----
TTRPGS
I played a LOT of DnD this year.
In my Monday game, we're closely approaching our 100th sessions and possibly the end of our first campaign! I love Cherry so much and I hope she gets through it all with the Flockless! This is the longest campaign I've ever been in and the highest level I've grown to as well. Cherry went from level 3-13 so far, how my baby has grown! We also got to play some Kids on Bikes and Pathfinder 2e which was very fun! I hope to do more games after we finish campaign 1!
With my Tuesday group, I got to make so many fun characters and also try some new TTRPGs too! I'm excited for all the fun little things we'll get to do next year! I love Manon and hope we figure out the nature of this world.
I hope to finally run something next year for my friends next year, but we'll see how it goes!
-----
Video Games
I played a fuck ton of games this year. I got really into simulation games because I find them relaxing and nice.
The games I beat this year:
Garden in!
Paradise Marsh
Flying Neko Delivery
Unpacking
Lumbearjack
Terra Nil
Alba A Wildlife Adventure
Mail Time
Katamari Damacy Reroll
We Love Katamari Reroll
Frog Detective 3
Sticky Business
Pikmin 4
Garden Buddies
Pizza Tower
Loddlenauts
Moonstone Island
Frogsong
Kirby's Return to Dreamland Deluxe
I'm excited for a fuckton of indie games coming out next year and for the Paper Mario the Thousand Year Door remake. I need to beat the original before it comes out but we'll see how that goes.
My favourite games this year were Pikmin 4, Pizza Tower, Loddlenauts and Moonstone Island for sure!
-----
Life
No major changes happened in my life this year. I'm hoping next year I have more luck in finding an art job, but overall, I'm pretty ok with where I am.Working at a grocery store will always suck, but I'm at least making enough money to buy things I like and help my family out a bit.
I went to my first Pride parade this year. When I was sitting at the subway waiting for my friends to arrive I almost cried because seeing the sheer amount of queer people around was just heart-warming and made me feel like it was all gonna be ok. I got my first ace flags, one of which is on my desk near Rawhide. I also got handed a paper for black queer people which was a lil funny. I also got a lot of compliments on my outfit which felt very good.
Mental health wise, it's also been very ok. I'm hoping to get more support in terms of my ADHD meds since I've been on the same dosage for a while and things could be better.
-----
Lastly...
This is a lil sappy, but I wanna say thanks to all my friends and my sister for making this life worth living. I haven't been in a depressive rut in a long time because of those I love, the things I love, and the things I'm looking forward to. Life for me isn't always rainbows and sunshine, but I'm always happy about the small things that make it worthwhile. I'm looking forward to making and sharing more art with my friends, playing video games and TTRPGs, and just doing what I enjoy in life!
