“You will think me cruel, very selfish, but love is always selfish; the more ardent the more selfish. How jealous I am you cannot know. You must come with me, loving me, to death; or else hate me, and still come with me, and hating me through death and after. There is no such word as indifference in my apathetic nature.” — Carmilla

Went to Target during a trip to the next state over with Mom so we could have a fun day out, and I found DC Comics Manga, and this Joker one is so tempting to grab an ebook of
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This sounds like a typical fanfiction plot idea and I'm all for it
Also, found some cute Lego polybags, which is a nice bit to add to my Lego collection I'm rebuilding, as I'm mostly grabbing small bags and bricks from thrifting
Tumblr media Tumblr media
A cute farmer with a scarecrow and a bunny, and a "birthday train" micro build.
Also, I decided to finally try a minifigure blind box, since my Lego are gonna need some people for them, and golly, they've changed since I was a kid
Tumblr media
I got an Olympic runner guy with running blades prosthetics and a Harpy with articulated wings! I found out that they're making minifigs now that includes some wild fantasy elements and disability representation. I really want to find the dog groomer one with the Afghan hound and has a cochlear implant, the dog is cute and since hard-of-hearing runs in my family, that has a bit of a personal sentimental concept there...
Anyway, my Valentine's day was pretty cool. Nothing but good luck, people were very polite and friendly, and absolutely nothing went wrong this year. 🥹

& remember the first sign of a loser loser loser loser is hating school. Yall should've unfollowed me 2023 this year I'm laying it on you as is.
If you're not in some sort of murder level clas enroll right now. & it has to be so hard it feels like a death sentence
Ladies any form of "escape the matrix" and "you don't need school" & whatever school hating content out there is level down programming meant to keep you stuck and weak. School is the closest imitation to real life you get so dropping a class because it's too hard is your sign to tie yourself to your moms basement and never leave because you sure as heaven not making it in corporate, business, friendships, relationships, and, God Forbid, parenting. You Manifest a future as a stone because that's the most you can do with that mentality. Dropping out because you have anxiety is another great sign to move to the Amazon and cosplay a sloth because if you think there are human interactions in the adult world that won't make you feel anxious ahhh baby my baby. You got it so wrong, baby. If you can't focus in a 30 minute lesson just take your dream board & burn it up burn it upp and try your hand at being a house fly you'll have better luck. If you drop a class because you don't like the teacher stay as far away from romantic relationships and friendships and , especially, corporate & entrepreneurship because girly don't we have news for ya. Can't manage your time? And you want to be a CEO? Are you kidding?
School is the closest imitation to real life you get & the better you are at it the better you are at life, the harder your school life is the better your real life will be. & I mean take biochem engineering & aeronautical engineering first year college, get your ass run over by it BUT learn to sit still, to power through, teamwork, study techniques, etc so no one cares about your A [fun fact most A students don't make it] but did you power through it? K then junior year do the thing you actually like.
Not liking school for whatever reason is loser mentality if you couldn't make it past test drive what makes you think you'll make it on the highway. Back in high-school when I told my grandma I'm giving up on my scholarship because I'm getting bullied and tortured and ostracized her response wasn't a hug it was a slipper grandma of color style because do you think that won't happen in your adulthood? You think you run from a problem and it goes away? Go back in and make it tf. Notice how I'm not focused on what grade you get? My friend works at firm (one of the top of the country) that don't employ people with a history of As , it's not about academic excellence, can you get to cheer practise at 6 am and be in class by 7? What makes you think you can be a mom then? "Independent" can you schedule yourself? Manage classes, sports, hobbies, a part-time job, home chores , friendships, and free time? WHAT DO YOU THINK ADULTHOOD IS ABOUT? what makes you think running from that in school (where you have guidance & forced community) will keep you safe? Out here you're all alone sis. And now the government protects you like a treasure that ID days 18 and its up to you to protect yourself. If you can not sit still in a 30 minutes class you don't like what makes you think you're cut out for corporate? Yall ain't never left your moms house and it shows, no one that has been in the real world has that level of delulu.
Pick the damn calculus class & power from an E to a C- so when you're running your business & you meet hard things you dislike you have muscle memory to power through it & bc your business is something you like it's easier. Go to school with the girls that dislike you & find a way out of that so when your mom in law or officemates are being flaky you know what to do, you don't run. Sit through that class with that one homphobic sexist bigoted teacher so when you land a job at your dream firm you don't resign in six days and sabotage shit because you're delulu enough to think your little tantrum matters.
School , especially boarding school, is the closest imitation to real life you get. Power through it, take advantage of the resources & always chase the hardships now that you have people charged with guiding you so you're not 25 unmotivated with no accomplishment despite your A's , barely functional adult feeling like a loser because you let tiktok & escape the matrix bojo creators lie to you. Do you want to be one of those 35 year olds heavy on magical thinking because you didn't learn what your parents literally paid for you to learn under the guise of 'self care'. Don't be dumb dumb.
Success spills over

Rainbow Brite, everyone!!
The original Rainbow Brite show was before my time, but I always ADORED her. I always end up drawing her every few years or so. I used this to test some new coloring techniques and lineart work! I'm so happy with it!! I might start focusing more on explosive colors like this. Enjoy!! Check out my Etsy!

Postcard dump. Some old, some newer. I use these to try new techniques and experiment. Sometimes I send them to people or sell them at cons.
The cat, Malcolm, belongs to the fine people at Federal Color and was done with their Optimist inks when I did alpha testing for them last year. They're a great new maker of shellac ink, well worth trying out. I might do a more in-depth review of them because I've got a lot to say about ink (and the review I did for them was much more technical).

Took a break from planning out and testing more complicated designs to weave this little floral band. It was a great excuse to test out a dual-color pick up technique and to try weaving with a mix of yarn types. Turns out that makes tensioning a nightmare, but the fun variety of textures on the band almost makes it worth it.
The dual-color pick up technique, on the other hand, worked out really well! It's fairly limiting if you're worried about the length of floats on the back (like me), but I'm thrilled to have found a new way to manipulate color!

sevika w gf who uses makeup but all the routine (contour, eyeliner...) but not cause insecure cause she likes
sevika would like? she let reader do her makeup??🥹
cuteeeee!!!
men and minors dni
sevika wears some makeup-- she's got a little bottle of khol she applies to her eyes every morning, and a tube of dark coffee brown lipstick she keeps in her side satchel-- but that's about as far as her interest in the stuff goes.
so when she meets you, she's fascinated.
she'll watch you do your entire makeup routine, whether you're just doing a quick coat of mascara and chapstick to run to the cornerstore, or a full beat for a night out, whether you take ten minutes or two hours, sevika's watching you work with heart eyes the whole time.
sometimes you have to shoo her away, because you can't focus while sevika's watching you like that, but most of the time you let her stay.
she loves it when you let her help. she loves carefully swiping your lipstick on for you, cleaning up the bleeding edges with a gentle swipe of her thumb. she also loves when you let her pick out your eyeshadow colors for the day. she'll listen to you blab on and on about new contouring techniques, or the difference between a smoky eye vs. a halo eye. she doesn't give a shit, but she likes the little smile she gets from you when she compliments your makeup with the proper terminology.
"love that cut crease, baby" or "wait hold on, you forgot to brush off this little bit of baking powder."
the first time you take false lashes off in front of sevika, she screams in horror. you laugh.
"what, you thought my eyelashes were 22milimeters long naturally?" you ask. sevika's still gawking at you.
"i thought the mascara made 'em longer or something!" she says.
you giggle then place the still sticky lash bands over your top lip, making a little mustache. sevika snorts.
if you ever ask to do sevika's makeup, she'd let you. she wouldn't want anything different from what she usually does-- dark eyes and lips-- but she'll let you add some more products and techniques to make it a bit more cohesive and polished. some contour to bring out her lovely cheekbones, brow gel for her eyebrows, lipliner so her lipstick doesn't smudge as much throughout the day, and setting spray that smells like flowers and adds a little shimmer to her skin. she loves it.
she loves it so much that she makes you do her makeup for her every time she can. she's going into work but you've got the day off? you're doing her makeup. date night somewhere fancy? you're doing her makeup.
sevika's favorite thing about your makeup though, is the colorful kiss marks that decorate her cheeks and neck every day, matching the color painting your lips.
when you buy new lipstick, she always offers to help you 'test the longevity.'
this just means having a handsy makeout session.

Tumblr media
Ghost
"you're not doing [blank] alone."
will fight God if that's what it takes; let it be the groceries or ordering a new couch
found out by sheer intuition; you were bummed that you didn't get to do a little surprise but he assured you that the news made him the happiest man alive and you sincerely believed him;
how exactly? that man knows his shit; you being groggy in the morning? not taking a sip of his beer when watching telly at night? he's got it figured out
doesn't really know how to prep but is too shy to ask you anything so you just find him passed out on the couch every now and then with his laptop glowing at him with "how to build a crib" or "baby sign language" when you can't even tell the baby's gender yet
it took you a week to convince him that you indeed can go to the bathroom alone
tries the more laid-back cravings and doesn't like them; never forgets to ask you about the latest one when you're grocery shopping
is occupied when you go and check for the gender of the baby; you call him from the parking lot with the news; you don't often hear Simon cry but he did that day
calls the baby bug and bezzie, mumbling at your stomach
looks up how to relieve pain with that tummy-lifting technique when your bump grows larger and larger
holds your hand and remains grounded for the entirety of the birth
becomes a very shallow sleeper; the baby stirs and he's at their feet looking over their tiny little body for any sign of distress
Soap
"it's mine, right?"
will go to the ends of the world to get you a pregnancy pillow, but only in the color he likes too
found out on accident; you didn't mind. he came into the bathroom to brush his teeth one morning and found you slouched by the wall, tears of joy in your eyes
insists on picking clothes super early on and revives any old contact of his to get a special baby carrier or a bottle boiler he heard about once
will not shut up about it
tries every single one of your cravings and actually ends up liking some of them
gender reveal party
laddie or lassie depending on the baby's gender, accompanied by approx. 400,000 kisses to your belly daily
gets you all kinds of tape for your growing belly and applies them himself
almost faints during the birth but can't stay away from you
the first time you wake up the next time after your well-deserved rest, he's talking to a nurse while gently cradling the baby; he's a dream dad, who seems to take on the role immediately
Gaz
"what's this… you have to be fucking kidding me this is the best fucking day of my life, babe. can the baby hear me? shit. shit. uhhhh--"
you planned a little party and hid the test in a box to surprise him; it went perfectly, everyone cried
absolutely showers you with stuff he noticed on a shelf at a store that the baby wouldn't likely use until 12 or even 24 months old
"thought you'd like it" is the new most popular word in the household
you get don't touch a single piece of cleaning equipment or dirty dish in the house for nine months
you could get used to this
tries spicing up your cravings; plating them nicely or adding something new
never shuts up about how he used to babysit and will therefore make a good dad
"I just want a happy healthy baby the gender matters the least" he kisses you on your forehead as you open the envelope containing the papers on the couch
tells the baby about the happy family they'll be born into and sometimes mumbles names at your belly as if testing which one fits them best; he looks up at you for approval each time
goes with you to pregnant yoga classes to see how he can help you practice with you at home when the baby in your tummy grows bigger
cries with you during birth
his hand is always by the side of the crib in the hospital
Price
"wh- you? c'mere, love. really?"
touches touches and more touches, is glued to your side from the day he finds out; you're not allowed to lift anything
is very self-conscious about everything; helps out wherever he can, you have to put him down each time
you get into arguments about this but he always downplays it with a little teasing that always eases the mood and you can't help but adore the stressful old man he is
tries to quit smoking but he only resettles on the balcony/porch/out-the-window technique; even more so when you're in his proximity
keeps notes of all your cravings
becomes a fridge organizer and buys healthy food only
talks to the baby so much calls your stomach the most adorable names ever
asks you not to find out the gender of the baby until birth
expert massage therapist for when your belly becomes too heavy; pressure points you name it he knows how to relieve pain
his one hand is getting shattered in your fist, and his other is smoothing over your hair constantly during birth
a little afraid to hold the baby on his own at first, but gradually warms up to the idea, and bath time becomes his favorite
Alejandro
"mi corazón, we get to be parents?! I love you so much, I--"
his mother knew first and lead him to guess for himself while you were out of earshot in another room; he came in and swooped you up to pepper kisses all over you
your phone bill is through the roof: he calls up every abuela and uncle he can for tips, even sits down with his baby nieces and nephews to ask them what they like for breakfast and stuff
sings to your stomach in his low baritone
gets the baby a little golden necklace; it's a gift in the family
you inherit SO MANY kids' clothes; you feel like you never have to buy a piece of diaper again; nor a blanket
you go through a list of old wives' tales about finding out the gender, but you end up waiting until the birth
will try to home-cook all your cravings: make pickles or banana ice cream from scratch
tries (and succeeds) to remedy your pregnancy pains; herbs, physio, he's got it all
he knows what he's doing or he's just a natural; birth never seemed so quick and easy with him by your side
you catch him the first time humming to the baby in the hospital, while gently rocking the little one
Rudy
"you missed your period. wait, you missed your period?? test, test now, mi alma"
he ushers you in the bathroom and waits outside on the bed, thrumming his fingers against the soft bedding
is the happiest fucking thing when you let him in and he notices a faint crossing line on the test immediately
get ready for nine months of non-ending praise
has a new nickname for the baby every day
plays music to your bump nonstop
loves, I mean LOVES pregnant you; every inch of your body, your plump breasts, your growing tummy, the stretch marks on your skin, name it he's a sucker for it
the two of you go to the doctor together to find out the baby's gender and he's already crying in the parking lot before you go in
looks up non-spicy/pregnancy-safe versions of everyday dishes and makes them for you no questions asked
ends up inheriting your pregnancy pillow after you give birth, and takes it to the base for when he has to sleep without you; seriously, it smells like pregnant you what could be better
he talks you through the birth, his voice is calm and grounding
talks to the baby in a hushed voice whenever he can; smiles at you every time the little one makes a face during
König
"are you sure?"
you sat him down and told him plainly the moment he came home from deployment; he laugh-cries and hugs you for hours on end after
if you thought he was the biggest cuddlebug-snugglebear already, you're deeply mistaken
talks to your stomach in German; gives the baby 2-3 little nicknames you can't quite catch
will not leave you alone; becomes a bigger, more deadly baby
when I tell you he's protective--
pretends to like the taste of your cravings; he truly likes the fact that he can make you happy with a jar of pickles he got from the local farmers' market
little trinkets for the win; binkie-shaped keychain, baby spoon with Biene Maya on it…
waits for you to tell him the baby's gender
more stressed than you during the birth; manages to hide it
settles on one of the nicknames he already tried and calls the baby that; also afraid to hold the little one because according to him the baby would get lost in his arms

WHAT IS TIME DISTORTION??
Blog#310
Saturday, July 1st, 2023
Welcome back,
Scientists could soon test Einstein's theory of general relativity by measuring the distortion of time.
According to new research published June 22 in the journal Nature Astronomy, the newly proposed method turns the edge of space and time into a vast cosmic lab to investigate if general relativity can account for dark matter — a mysterious, invisible form of matter that can only be inferred by its gravitational influence on the universe's visible matter and energy — as well as the accelerating expansion of the universe due to dark energy.
Tumblr media
The method is ready to be tested on future surveys of the deep universe, according to the study authors.
General relativity states that gravity is the result of mass warping the fabric of space and time, which Einstein lumped into a four-dimensional entity called space-time. According to relativity, time passes more slowly close to a massive object than it does in a mass-less vacuum. This change in the passing of time is called time distortion.
Tumblr media
Since its introduction in 1915, general relativity has been tested extensively and has become our best description of gravity on tremendous scales. But scientists aren't yet sure if it can explain invisible dark matter and dark energy, which together account for around 95% of the energy and matter in the universe.
"Time distortion predicted by general relativity has already been measured very precisely at small distances," Camille Bonvin, lead study author and an associate professor at the University of Geneva, told Live Science via email.
Tumblr media
"It has been measured for planes flying around the Earth, for stars in our galaxy, and also for clusters of galaxies. We propose a method to measure the distortion of time at very large distances."
The method suggests testing time distortion by measuring redshift, the change in the frequency of light an object emits as it moves away from us. Bonvin said the difference here is that this technique measures redshift caused as light attempts to climb out of a gravitational well, a "dent" in space-time created by a massive object.
Tumblr media
"This climb changes the frequency of the light because time passes at different rates inside and outside of the gravitational well," she said. "As a consequence, the color of the light is changed; it is shifted to red.
By measuring gravitational redshift, we obtain a measurement of the distortion of time."
Time distortion suggests that time is not absolute in our universe but rather passes at varying rates depending on gravitational fields. This idea is not exclusive to general relativity.
Tumblr media
"Time distortion exists in all modern theories of gravity," Bonvin said. "However, the amplitude of the time distortion  —  how much the presence of a massive object slows down time —  varies from theory to theory."
In general relativity, the distortions of time and space are predicted to be the same; in other theories of gravity, this is not always the case.
Tumblr media
That means that by measuring the distortion of time and comparing it to the distortion of space, physicists can test the validity of general relativity.
The team's new method could also test another leading theory of the cosmos: Euler's formula, which astronomers use to calculate the movement of galaxies. Specifically, the team's proposed measurement of time distortion could prove whether dark matter obeys Euler's equation, as prior studies of time distortion have presumed.

If the ask game is still open, what about an AU where Bakugou is recruited by the HPSC à la Hawks and Nagant?
Tumblr media
Doubling these up because they fit together
- HPSC hears about it right away, as it’s unusual for UA to expel a single student rather than a large group.  They find Bakugou’s high test scores in both the academic and practical exam, as well as the glowing praise from teachers over the years.  But they aren’t stupid.  They can sense where things have been exaggerated, and the operatives studying his case immediately clock what an arrogant, violent person he is.  The kind of person who could easily become a villain, especially after being ‘wronged’ like this.  They intercept his application to new schools within the week.
- They tell him and his family that this is a new and experimental program to teach the next generation of heroes, as opposed to the reality that many like him have come before.  It’s a boarding situation with limited contact with his family or the outside world, which Bakugou is initially happy about.  He doesn’t need his nagging parents breathing down his neck.  And he doesn’t need a class of extras to distract him.  Plus, academics take even more of a backseat to hero training.
- Bakugou is easy to train.  Even though his regiment is specialized, his handlers make up records for him to break; not so easy he can break them on the first try, not hard enough to be impossible.  Winning is his sole drive, so they let him think he’s doing that.  When he does start breaking the made-up records, they invent imaginary other students in the program that are breaking new ones in another part of the building.  This technique proves even more effective, as Bakugou doesn’t just run on being the best, he thrives on being better than others.
-  Harder is teaching him to hold back on orders.  Bakugou fundamentally believes himself to be superior to everyone, including adults, so why should he listen to them?  So the handlers come up with an exorcise: he’s locked in a room with a series of dummies with voice boxes that hurl insults at all hours of the day.  But he’s only allowed to destroy them one at a time when the lights in the room change color.  Said color change only occurs for a few seconds at a time a few times a day, and the dummies are reinforced with quirk-resistant material that take a long time to break.  And every time he breaks a dummy outside of the allotted time, they bring back in two more.  He has as long as he needs to work, but they tell him the sports festival is only two weeks away and they won’t let him watch if he doesn’t finish the exercise in time.  When he says he doesn't care, they remind him that he could check on the progress of the kids who got him expelled.  Against all odds he does it, and gets to watch in time to see Deku, the reason he lost his shot at UA, win the whole tournament against Todoroki, the one other kid that scared him.  Of course, it was never going to be live, it happened days before they introduced the exercise.  Live television is out of their control, and who knows how he might have reacted to different results.
- His rage and commentary about Izuku being a quirkless liar prompt the program to change course: employ Bakugou as a specific countermeasure to Deku.  He’s a strong kid with obvious ties to All Might, and All Might is a hero too powerful for them to control.  Plus, he tried to appeal Bakugou’s expulsion, so he still views him as a friend.  And so, they tell Bakugou his suspicions about Izuku aren’t unwarranted, someone born quirkless suddenly gaining power like that reads like something similar to a legendary supervillain believed to be dead.  Not to mention, quirkless people in general lack discipline.  Not like Bakugou, less than a year into the program and he’s already the best they’ve seen in years.  Deku is on a fast track to become All Might’s successor, the new most popular hero in the world.  And who would become even more popular than the guy who proved that symbol false?

Q&A !! With @leafenzo/aka Leah and myself, Eliza
Tumblr media
Leah: We don't hold ourselves to a strict schedule, I will say though we are a large chunk of the way done - all basic dyed blocks (like wool, concrete, banners, etc) are already in. We're just ironing out extra features related to the dyes. Also- before it releases we will have a public playtesting period for a tad if anyone reallyyy wants it early :3 (albeit in a quite unstable form). The plan is to release it for Fabric, and for 1.20.1 through 1.20.3 for now.
Tumblr media
Leah: teehehe chunk-of-fun :3 jfsljfkslj Eliza: well, for the most part, the new bugs we are adding are things i just find interesting and have a good model idea for. i like making them very large, fitting into the large bug precedent set by the bees and silverfish :3 Right now the planned blorbos are the beetle, the wooly beetle, mantis, dragonfly, mint slug and silk moth! I've also made a seahorse model, but I don't think I'll end up using it in the dye mod. I might add more in the future if I'm feeling up to it.
Tumblr media
Eliza: We have a lot of compatibility features in the works - including Suppementaries' Presents, every dyeable block in Create, Farmer's Delight's signs, and compatibility integration with Nature's Sprit as well. I've also thought about making dye compat with Another Furniture, but... that is a monumental task that I'd probably need help with/be able to streamline. We will also try and add compatibility textures to mods that autogenerate new dyed blocks - but that will have to be a case-by-case basis, and will be figured out during beta testing.
Tumblr media
Eliza: I would love to make a tutorial at some point! - however, my process right now is very spur-of-the-moment and kinda random, haha. Maybe I'll make a post in the future if i'm feeling up to it. At the very least, I do follow some basic principles with designing my models:
Try to use clever techniques to minimize the amount of cubes used - this creates a confine that makes me get creative with what cubes i use while also optimizing the model at the same time.
Try to be as expressive as possible with cubes being used, no cube should be left untouched in the keyframes of animation.
Keep colors interesting by shifting hue a lot depending on lighting and what kind of material i want to convey (for example, if most of the model is smooth and green to blue, i'd go for green to yellow for the rougher parts)
Tumblr media
Eliza: I would like to add some more storage blocks in the future, mainly stuff from new updates and any other random things I think of. I was thinking of making a create compatibility submod maybe, but because of the effort it takes to come up with textures its still just a thought. Leah: If by that you mean creating mods that add new features to squashed, or compatibility fixes, of course! and that goes for our other mods too! :D We'd seriously feel honored.
Tumblr media
Leah: For me, the hardest part was just the frustration of it, frustration at the code, the tutorial, or far more often just at myself. Just know that it's the hardest at the beginning, but if you stick with you'll get your bearings and it will somehow start to get a bit easier. Also, datagen! It's useful as can be but gosh did that take me a while to figure out even just the basics of how to generate a model haha.
Thank you for all the questions!! We apologize if we didn't quite get to your question, there were a lot and we tried to pick the most general ones :3 If you still have a question that wasn't answered here, be sure to join and ask it on our discord!: https://discord.gg/eJePAPE27T

At long last, I have a new book to share! Feels like forever since the last one. This is Vita Nova, a fantastic Good Omens fic by @philoomenaa that I asked to bind way back in October. It took me a while to get here and I learned several new techniques for this bind but it was so very worth the wait. It's an excellent pre-season 2 story from 2019-2020, involving the fandom's favorites dealing with an unexpected bout of both humanity and memory loss. It's just...really really good and I love it.
More photos and process talk under the cut! There are a lot of details to see with this one.
One of the things I learned for this bind was homemade book cloth. I used the heat n bond method and had pretty good results with this satiny bronze cloth that I found in the Joann's remnant bin. The making of the cloth was fairly straightforward but it handles very differently to regular book cloth. The satin is really slippery and absolutely would not hold a crease at the hinge. I think it also shrank a little at the gluing stage? Which sounds weird but I left my usual amount of space for the corner turn-ins but still had teeny tiny gaps on three of the corners, which has never happened to me before. I also had an issue with glue seepage when I applied HTV to the cover and spine. You can see this in the images above, and here in the spine photos:

Part of the reason it has that fancy art nouveau frame on the cover is an attempt to hide this. I think it's the heat press re-activating the heat n bond to cause it. I found out two things here: that fabric requires less press time than book cloth or cardstock, and that if you move the heat press slowly but constantly like an iron it is way less likely to do this. I was super disappointed that it happened but now, a few days later, it doesn't seems so bad. I guess some items just come with a little personal history already baked in.
Here, have some more glamour shots:

The geometric endpapers were chosen specifically to go with this cloth. I found them at the same craft store and knew I had use them together, they look so incredible. And I learned edge gilding for this project! It was very annoying. The final result here is with heat transfer foil, and I did about six tests on scrap text blocks before I got a result I was at all satisfied with. I tried rub n buff (great coverage, not shiny enough, kept coming off on my fingers even after curing for 2 days) and an actual gilding kit (flaked off as soon as I separated the pages). The heat foil still has some patchy spots but was by far the best-looking result. I also learned double-core end bands for this project! Because I wanted some kind of match for those opulent endpapers and didn't want to settle for just two colors. I think they came out pretty well for a first try and I'll definitely be doing them again.

Couple of photos of the ribbon I chose for the bookmark. It's probably a little too wide for a book this length; you can see in the end band photo that I had to fold it in half to get it to lay in the spine properly. But it looks so good with the other design elements that I couldn't resist. Luxury all the way on this one.
Speaking of luxury, have a look at the interior:

From left to right, we have the title page, the ornament I chose for the chapter numbers, and the scene break divider. All the images came from rawpixel with just the lightest amount of editing from me. The chapter image is the same as the star on the title page, but I made it gray and took out the center to turn it into a frame for the numbers. The cloth and endpapers really set the tone for this one all the way through, and all the other design choices followed from there. It's really gorgeous, guys. I love it so much.
And that's it! That was the last work in progress I had from 2023, and I'm so pleased to have finally finished it. Hope you like it, AMidnightDreary!

How Toriyama/Toyotaro salvaged "End of Z"
Tumblr media
Let me start this post with a personal confession that may or may not be unpopular: I have very little interest in Dragon Ball DAIMA. I have slightly more than I used to after Akira Toriyama's death since I am naturally curious to see what the last Dragon Ball related material he ever produced is like, but otherwise it still looks like just a different take on Dragon Ball GT, my least favorite Dragon Ball series, except that more characters than just Goku turn young and it's the Demon Realm that's being explored instead of space. It also doesn't help that the head writer, Yuko Kakihara, makes me nervous - she's done fine work as an episodic script writer on anime such as Fresh Pretty Cure, My Bride is a Mermaid, and Pokémon Journeys, and she was fantastic as the head writer of IRODUKU: The World in Color. But in terms of shows closer to what Dragon Ball DAIMA seems like, she was head writer on that god-awful Stitch anime that Disney stupidly allowed to be made. Worse still, she was the writer of Digimon Adventure Tri. So you can understand why I have reservations.
Point is, I consider Dragon Ball DAIMA to be a sideshow, regardless of what its merits may end up being. For me personally, it's the manga/anime trilogy of Dragon Ball, Dragon Ball Z and Dragon Ball Super that really counts the most. And as tragic as the circumstances behind the end of Toriyama's involvement on the latter are, I am highly impressed what he and his mangaka protégée Toyotaro were able to accomplish. With three major steps, they have substantially retconned the notoriously underwhelming ending of the original manga series and DBZ anime, known as "End of Z" among fans, in a way that makes a satisfying closure.
The first step was way back in Dragon Ball Online. Toriyama was involved back then in canonically mapping out the future of the Dragon Ball world, long after Goku, his friends and his family have passed away. And a major part of that was how Gohan, Goten, Trunks and Pan affected that world for the better in their adult lives. Gohan in particular has a masterful end to his long struggle between being a fighter and being a scholar by becoming a scholar on ki fighting techniques, publishing a study that makes it widely possible for humans around the world to master ki control and gain flight and energy blasts. It's a perfect outcome for him.
The second step was through Toriyama's involvement in the new movies and Super series. End of Z now cannot happen the way it was presented in the original manga and anime. There are way too many discrepancies, from character appearances, the lack of certain characters who it would make little sense not to be there, and details like "none of Goku's friends saw him for 5 years before then" which have now been completely contradicted. Obviously the 28th Budokai where Goku meets Uub and takes him under his wing for training is still canon, but that event is now free to transpire in a far more plausible and satisfactory way than the famously rushed, haphazard and OOC way in which it was depicted before.
The third and final step was the last collaboration between Toriyama and Toyotaro in the Super manga. The final three chapters they worked on together were an epilogue to the story of the Super Hero film, actually tying its plot together with the side plot featuring Goku and Vegeta on Beerus' planet. Perhaps responding to prevalent criticisms, the movie had already made a major point of showing how the world can still be successfully defended by the Z Fighters even without Goku and Vegeta being there. And in these three chapters, the point is carried even further by having Goku test what the new generation is capable of, a theme that's even reflected in the final chapter's title, "Passing On To The Future". This completely recontextualizes End of Z. Originally made as a laughable attempt to salvage the "Goku passing the torch" direction with Uub in place of Gohan after Toriyama botched it so badly with him, now it makes Uub only the latest in a large field of fighters that includes Gohan. Now it's Gohan, Goten, Trunks, Pan, even Broly of all people, who are being gathered as Earth's next line of defense once Goku and Vegeta finally expire. Uub will join that group. (Oh, and being Namekian, both Piccolo and Dende will still be around to assist, of course.)
So while the narrative of Dragon Ball may have peaked with the Cell Saga, now the Majin Buu Saga -> Battle of Gods Saga -> Resurrection F Saga -> Universe 6 Saga -> Future Trunks / Goku Black Saga -> Universe Survival Saga -> Broly Saga -> Galactic Patrol Prisoner Saga -> Granolah the Survivor Saga -> Super Hero Saga -> End of Z together create a worthier follow-up than just the Majin Buu Saga -> End of Z was back in the day. Certainly not perfect, even when leaving the loose ends out of it (so Freeza's just gonna stay loose out there with a new ultimate form?), but feeling much closer to a fully realized ending.
Thank you, Toriyama. You made it up as you went along right to the very end, but as usual, your remarkable creative talent managed to make it all fit together. You are deeply missed.
