Sanjuno’s Story and Fandom Masterlist
I’m going to pin this list of titles so that people can more easily figure out what they want to vote for each Friday. Anything labelled with Meta, WIP, or Concept can be voted for.
1.    ATTACK ON TITAN
1.1.  Coordinates T by H: Eren’s coordinator abilities allow him to metaphysically bond with other humans, thereby giving everyone in the group the ability to psychically communicate with the rest and also boosting everyone’s healing ability exponentially to be on par with the Titan Shifters. Chaptered, WIP - Posted
2.    BLEACH
2.1. What Happens on Vacation: Crossover with YYH – turns out that Kurosaki Misaki was a senior ferry girl on sabbatical (which translates as living a mortal life unaware of her true nature) and she was late returning to work due to being trapped in Grand Fishers gut. Ichigo and Uryuu are very confused when their “cousin” Kazuma shows up to introduce his new bride to the family. Koenma is just really pissed off by all the paperwork he needs to deal with while cleaning up his father’s mismanaged pet project. Chaptered, WIP - Unposted
3.     CODE GEASS
3.1.  A Code of Ice and Fire: Crossover with GOT – Lelouch, his two younger siblings, and Lelouch’s most loyal followers are reincarnated into Westeros. Lelouch proceeds to make it his lifelong mission to drive Cersei into frothing fits and strengthens the Baratheon dynasty to the point that even Tywin is impressed by his grandson’s machinations. Then CC shows up with dragons and Ned Stark starts to think that maybe Robert’s onto something with the “drinking to forget” idea. Meta
3.2.  Abandon Thyself: Post-Zero Requiem Suzaku travels back in time to the scene in the Shinjuku Ghettos when the truck explodes. Given that the people closest to him haven’t actually spoken to Suzaku in years, the origins of Suzaku’s obvious mental instability is hilariously misattributed by various outside PoVs. So when Suzaku hits his knees in front of Lelouch, swearing eternal devotion and vowing to make Lelouch the next emperor nobody panics. (They should really reconsider panicking.) Drabbles, Prompt Fill - Posted
3.3.  The Sun Also Rises: At the moment of his death in the Zero Requiem, Lelouch travels back in time to his childhood body. With only a week to go before Marianne is “assassinated by terrorists” Lelouch sets out to rearrange the board in a way none of the other players will see coming until it’s far too late. Lelouch has been given a second chance to make things right, and Lelouch wouldn’t be Lelouch if he didn’t plan big. This time around, Lelouch plans for his victory to be a bit more obvious. Chaptered, WIP - Posted
4.    DCU
4.1.  Time Enough: Terry McGinnis, his little brother Matt, and their dogs are the only members of their timeline to survive because Bruce Wayne was too old to see any more of his sons die in front of him. So they all got knocked out, shoved into an escape capsule, and ejected from the Batman Beyond timeline before it crumbles. Said time pod crashes into the middle of a Red Hood versus Match throw down, and Terry’s Wayne-inherited charisma is so powerful it allows him to banter his way into good graces of both villains. Jason drags them all off to his lair because every single member of the Batfam hoards orphans. Chaptered, WIP - Posted
5.    DRAGON BALL
5.1.  Saiyajin Pride: Alien biology has a larger impact on characterization that it does in canon. Mirai comes back to the main timeline live in sin with Videl and Gohan. Vegeta and Goku deal with some shit that comes from being the last full-blooded members of their species. Then just as things are settling down… Garlic is an idiot who thinks up a loophole in the “can’t wish people dead” rule and wishes Goku and Vegeta’s families straight out of existence and they end up in an entirely different reality. The only upside is that Vegeta finally gets to kill Frieza. Chaptered, WIP - Unposted
6.    FAIRY TAIL
6.1.  Flight Of Dragons: Future!Lucy misses her target and ends up landing further back in time, during the same year Natsu and the rest of the Dragon Slayer kids were brought to when they were pulled forward in time.  Fairy Tail luck kicks in, and future!Lucy runs into child!Laxus as he escapes from his father after being fed the Lightning Dragon Lacrima. Laxus is handed a Prophecy and runs with it. Children have never needed Fairy Tales to tell them that Dragons exist, but they certainly help. Chaptered, WIP - Posted
6.2.  My Heart Overflows: Juvia and Grey have finally started dating, but the Fairy Tail Mage Guild has some interesting traditions when it comes to proving the validity of a romantic relationship. Oneshot, Prompt fill - Posted
7.    FAMILIAR OF ZERO
7.1.  A Velvet Glove: Crossover with TMNT – Leonardo gets summoned to be Louise’s Familiar. Since all of his brothers are dead, Leo sees no reason not to make the most of this “lifelong bond of magic and spirit” and adopts Louise as his little sister. Halgenkia is not prepared for a Louise Francois le Blanc de la Valliere with ninja training. Henrietta is probably far too gleeful over making her best friend her Spymaster, but it’s not like anyone knows enough about what they’re doing to stop her. Reconquista gets exposed and smashed, and Wardes really should have respected his fiancée more. Chaptered, WIP - Posted
8.    FINAL FANTASY VII
8.1.  A Dirge of Ice and Fire: Crossover with GOT – Several members of Avalanche and the Elite Soldiers are reincarnated as the spares and bastards of Westeros’ Great Houses. Given that Rhaenys Targaryen used to be Cid Highwind, the Sack of King’s Landing goes very differently. Meta
8.2.  A Feather’s Weight: Crossover with Naruto – Kakashi and Obito, along with their respective subordinates, are reincarnated in Wutai, and are thus in position to undermine a lot of Hojo’s plans simply by being themselves. Wutai still loses, but by a much smaller margin, and SHIN-RA realizes much too late that Wutai’s “concession” was a trap. Kakashi is a big shiny distraction for Sephiroth, the SOLDIERS revolt, and nobody knows who assassinated President Shinra. Chaptered, WIP - Unposted
8.3.  Antiviral: Woden and Gaia conspire to create antibodies to fight off Jenova’s infection. Cid and Vincent end up bearing the brunt of this decision, get roofied by Divine Intervention, and also end up the Gaian equivalent of demonic werewolves. Also the Planet is transforming all the SOLDIERS into werewolves too, yes, even the dead ones. Chaptered, WIP - Posted
8.4.  For Love Of: Cid Highwind crashes the Tiny Bronco into Lucrecia’s cave, does the metaphysical equivalent of tearing her heart out and eating it to absorb her power, and them proceeds to adopt General Sephiroth as his son because it’s not like anyone can stop him. Cid Highwind does what he wants. Sephiroth does what Mother wants. SHIN-RA soon regrets everything because Cid Highwind is a hell of a lot better at rewriting the social order than Avalanche is. Chaptered, WIP - Posted
8.5.  Hindsight is 20-20: CHAOS decides to rewrite time because they have a massive crush on Cid and they don’t want him to die. CHAOS fumbles the landing and Cid ends up in the body of some weird Lucrecia/Ancient-Cetra-Who-Was-Jenova’s-Host Clone and ends up giving birth to Sephiroth. Things only get worse from there. Chaptered, WIP - Posted
8.6.  Like it Rough: Cid likes Vincent a lot and also has a bit of a kink for scars. Cid walks in on Vincent naked, runs away to hide his raging boner, and Vincent ends up chasing Cid around the airship until he can pin his friend down in the Captain’s bunk because the demons are all drunk on the pheromones. Oneshot - Complete
8.7.  Names of Power: Jenova’s taint getting mixed into the Lifestream has far-reaching consequences, and Avalanche gets tapped to handle the fallout whither they like it or not. Series, WIP - Posted
8.7.1.     Small Packages: The Lifestream meddles in Avalanches lives even after the Planet has been saved. There are clones and ancient powers better off left alone but it’s not like Avalanche ever gets a say in the matter. Chaptered, WIP - Posted
8.7.2.     History Inverted: Jenova isn’t all the way gone and the Planet really doesn’t care if Humanity survives or not as long as the infection is burned away. Aerith shoves the spirits of Avalanche and their children into a new timeline because she doesn’t want to watch their souls get shredded. Avalanche proceeds to mosey along and wreak havoc in the way only they can manage. Chaptered, WIP - Posted
8.8.  To Earn the Sky: Echidna, Mother of Monsters and Heroes, and Jenova, the Calamity From the Skies, are at war. Hojo makes a very big mistake when he uses the Blood of Echidna’s Children in his Revenant Project. Cid Highwind is a good son, and his Mother wants to meet her new Grandchildren. Chaptered, WIP - Posted
9.    FINAL FANTASY XV
9.1.  A Light of Ice and Fire: Crossover with FFVX – Noctis, his Retinue, and the loyal members of the Kingsglaive and Crownsguard are reincarnated into Westeros. Jorah Mormont is Cor Leonis, but Cor Leonis is not Jorah Mormont, and so the Northern Forces are something to fear in Robert’s Rebellion. By the time King Robert visits Winterfell, it will be a very different Northern Kingdom that he finds there. Meta
10. GAME OF THRONES
10.1.               Crossover Fixits to Help Westeros be Less Miserably Doomed: Various casts from other series end up reborn in Westeros and use knowledge from their previous lives to change the Game. Series
10.1.1. An Assemblage of Ice and Fire: Crossover with MCU – Team Iron Man focus, since Tony is reincarnated as Ned Stark. Starks are made of Iron, and Winter is coming. Tony’s genius intellect, knowledge of politics and economics, experience with magic and alternate realities, and the fact that Extremis carried over through his reincarnation and adapted to work with First Man magic means that the Stark siblings who go to the Tourney of Harrenhal are nothing like the canon versions. Rhaegar gets his Stark bride, and he proceeds to regret it for the rest of his life. Meta
10.1.2. A Balance of Ice and Fire: Crossover with SW – Qui-Gon Jinn’s three Padawan Learners and Padme (who got taken in Anakin’s place) are reincarnated as the Tyrell siblings. They proceed to follow the Will of the Force and prepare the Seven Kingdoms to win against the Long Night. Meta
10.1.3. A Code of Ice and Fire: Crossover with CG – Lelouch, his two younger siblings, and Lelouch’s most loyal followers are reincarnated into Westeros. Lelouch proceeds to make it his lifelong mission to drive Cersei into frothing fits and strengthens the Baratheon dynasty to the point that even Tywin is impressed by his grandson’s machinations. Then CC shows up with dragons and Ned Stark starts to think that maybe Robert’s onto something with the “drinking to forget” thing. Meta
10.1.4. A Dirge of Ice and Fire: Crossover with FFVII – Several members of Avalanche and the Elite Soldiers are reincarnated as the spares and bastards of Westeros’ Great Houses. Given that Rhaenys Targaryen used to be Cid Highwind, the Sack of King’s Landing goes very differently. Meta
10.1.5. A Dying Will of Ice and Fire: Crossover with KHR – The Tri-Ni-Sette holders and all those bonded to them are reincarnated into Westeros Noble Houses. Xanxus is born as Robert’s eldest trueborn son and Heir to the Iron Throne, and so all it takes is one look at the Wall to know that there is something to fear on the other side. Tsuna is busy swooning over Arya’s muscles but in-between reciting odes to his amazing betrothed he takes time to tell Nono’s ghost “I told you Xanxus would make the better Heir.” Meta
10.1.6. Meta
10.1.7. A Space Between Ice and Fire: Crossover with Naruto WCE – The Konoha Founders and their siblings are reincarnated as Starks and Baratheons and manage to save the Realms of Men while resolving their many and varied issues with one another. Meta
10.1.8. A Transformation of Ice and Fire: Crossover with TFG1 – Most of the Cybertronians who died during Unicron’s Awakening end up reincarnated as dragons (Seekers) and Direwolves (Autobots). The sapience of the animals causes significant changes to outcome of several key canon events. Meta
10.2.              Singing In A Different Key: SI is reborn as Jon Snow, who then precedes to Machiavelli the fuck out of the North in preparation for the coming Long Night and also to screw over the Lannisters. Because fuckthe Lannisters. Meta
10.3.               Wolf At The Door: When Ice takes the head of Eddard Stark, Valeryian magic mixes with the Blood of the First Men. It’s wild, uncontrolled, and Ned ends up as a four year old in Winterfell’s Godswood, staring at his reflection in the water. Eddara Stark, second-born child and first-born daughter of Rikard and Lyarra Stark looks back up at him. Ned, fully believing that this is his punishment for failing his family and best friend the first time around, decides to fix the Realm by fulfilling the Pact of Fire and Ice. The thing about being a woman is that no one ever expects you to be a threat, not even other women. The thing about being the Quiet Wolf is that everyone overlooks you until the moment your teeth sink into their throat. Concept
11. GET BACKERS
11.1.               Holy Days of Yore: Various celebration themed fic that explore Ban’s backstory as the “With Queen’s Grandson” and bring a bit more of that old black magic into the Get Backer’s lifestyle. Series
11.1.1. Lupercalia: Ban gets a magic matchmaker box in the mail and everyone wears their heart on their sleeve for Valentine’s Day. Oneshot - Posted
11.1.2. Oeastre: Ban gets roped into being the master of ceremonies for Maria’s coven and Easter gets interesting. (Everyone makes like bunnies.) Oneshot - Posted
12. GIRL GENIUS
12.1.               The Other Side of the River: One of the Jagermonsters manages to catch wind of Lucrecia’s plans and absconds with Klaus Barry during the confusion caused by the first explosion. This understandably causes some disruption in everyones plans when KB and his nanny run into Agatha during her time with the Circus. WIP - Unposted
12.2.               Threefold Path: Agatha, Gil, and Tarvek get their brains booted back in time during the si vales valeo and decided to run away and join the circus until they’re old enough to take over the world properly. WIP - Unposted
13. GUNDAM WING
13.1.               Mistakes and Misdemeanors: Heero was on blockers for the entire war due to a series of implants, which did no favours to his mental health. When the implants run out Heero gets run over by a hormone train and absolutely nobody knows how to handle that. Chaptered, WIP – Posted (Under Revision)
14. HARRY POTTER
14.1.               Black As His Name: Sirius Back lives! Because the Veil dumps his mind-and-soul into the empty body of his younger self in a world where Walburga Black lost it on her eldest son much earlier in life and Sirius was tortured until he was left brain-dead. Arcturus Black is pissed off over the treatment of one of his Heirs and since Sirius’ magic is still intact, names Sirius the Heir to House Black and proceeds to hold the Heirship over everybody’s heads for spite for as long as Sirius continues to “live”. Everyone in the Black Family is very surprised when the annual shaming ritual disguised as Sirius’ birthday party is crashed. By none other than the birthday boy himself. Sirius rolls with it and becomes a True Black in the most Marauder manner possible. WIP - Unposted
14.2.               Black Hunt Under Bloody Skies: Crossover with KHR – Regulus and Sirius both end up dumped into KHR because Death owes them a favour on its Master’s behalf. Things start to get weird after the Arcobaleno curse is broken. Regulus is actually Skull and Sirius is his Sky and they confuse the entire Mafia so much. WIP - Unposted
15. HOMESTUCK
15.1.               A Jump To The Left Behind: Post game reality has all the races living in a Galactic Republic, and the Troll Ancestors and Human Guardians all need to team up in order to solve the mystery of the planetoid-sized meteor that just barreled into the middle of their busiest spacelane because their names are written all over it. In the process of exploring the meteor they accidently wake up the Players and Sprites. Chaos ensues. Concept
15.2.               Pandora’s Final Gift: A mermaid AU where a Deep Old One gives Eridan (and only Eridan) the memories of his Game Player Self as a lark. Eridan hits the level cap for his current reality, freaks out, saves Sollux’s life, and then absconds as far away from the center of the Empire as he can get. Concept
16. INU YASHA
16.1.              Hunter’s Moon: The standard “Demon Mating Season” idea that draws on the infectious nature of demon energy in the Sengoku Jidai and runs with it. Everyone over the age of eighteen gets some. Kagome gets to go home and take a nap. Chaptered, WIP – Posted (Under Revision)
16.2.              Cry Wolf: Playing straight with the crack concept that Inuyasha and Kouga were betrothed as children. Kagome isn’t in the picture because she got yeeted back to her own time when the Shikon no Tama got purified. Chaptered, WIP – Posted (Under Revision)
17. KATEKYO HITMAN REBORN
17.1.               A Dying Will of Ice and Fire: Crossover with GOT – The Tri-Ni-Sette holders and all those bonded to them are reincarnated into Westeros Noble Houses.
17.2.               Black Hunt Under Bloody Skies: Crossover with HP – Regulus and Sirius both end up dumped into KHR because Death owes them a favour on its Master’s behalf. Things start to get weird after the Arcobaleno curse is broken. Regulus is actually Skull and Sirius is his Sky and they confuse the entire Mafia so much. WIP - Unposted
17.3.               Burning Salt Water: Crossover with OP – Xanxus gets dumped onto the Oro Jackson during the Pirate King’s last voyage when Nono’s Zero Point goes sideways and he ends up adopted by Rouge and Roger while he heals. After the execution Xanxus ends up raising the ASL trio to take over the Pirate Throne and Ace sets the Moby Dick on fire when Whitebeard kidnaps him. Meta, WIP - Unposted
17.4.               Cat’s Paws: Uri has seen enough Time Travel bullshit to know how it works, and so when Hayato gets himself killed she grabs his soul and flings herself backwards in time because fuck the timeline this is her human and he’s not allowed to abandon her again. The other Box Animals think it’s a great idea and do the same with their humans, and this results in the kind of alternate timeline that gives Byakuran a headache. In other words, Uri creates a timeline where Flame Actives are a lot more Alien than they used to be and now everyone thinks Youkai and other myths are real. Chapters, WIP - Posted
17.5.               Fire Shall Waken: All of Nono’s sons are still alive when the Cradle Affair happens and it results in the entire 10th Generation gathering up their Harmonies, rolling Xanxus into a blanket burrito, and taking off to Japan under assumed names where they proceed to spend the next eight years coddling Tsuna and being spoiled rotten by Nana in return. Meta
17.6.               Gremlins Della Varia: Mammon’s experiments with the Curse have had some odd side effects on the Varia. It all comes out during the Ring Battles and the other Arcobaleno are Judging You, Viper. Oneshot, Prompt Fill - Posted
17.7.               Karma, and the Repercussions Thereof: Crossover with Naruto. Legendary Ninja from the Elemental Countries get reincarnated into KHR and proceed to adopt all the Magic Rainbow Fire Children. Nono and Iemitsu suffer. Series, WIP
17.7.1. Karmic Balance: Kakashi and Obito are ninja married from the very start because of metaphysical bonding and some minor haunting during their last lives. Between Ninshu Shinobi needing to be in Clans and Flame Actives needing to be in Harmonies it does not take long before the child stealing begins. Gokudera Kakashi is the best wife and Dokuro Obito repents, repeatedly and often, while also having the time of his second life. Tsuna loves his Kakashi-sensei and wants to be just like him when he grows up. Chaptered, WIP - Posted
17.7.2. Karmic Justice: Madara and his brothers are reborn as Fon’s nephews and do not take kindly to the Arcobaleno curse being put on one of their relatives. The Hibari Clan proceeds to start hunting for the Man in the Iron Man en mass. Madara and his brothers hit Namimori during Nono’s visit and witness the sealing of Tsunayoshi. They don’t take well to this either. Things go worse for Tsuna than they do in canon and Madara hunts down Tobirama because he needs the resurrection to be done perfectly. Tsuna loves his Madara-shishou and wants to be just like him when he grows up. Oneshot - Posted
17.7.2.1.      Karmic Justice – Hubris: Madara comes across Xanxus in the ice while investigating the Vongola and despite Xanxus being a bit older than the usual target for child stealing decides to steal him anyway. After resurrecting Tsuna, Madara and Tobirama’s next project is defrosting Xanxus. Concept
17.7.2.2.      Karmic Justice – Providence: Madara finds Xanxus on the streets while hunting in Italy for the Man in the Iron Mask. Wrath Flame calls to Wrath Flame and Madara instantly adopts the delightfully savage little boy. Then Namimori happens, and Tsuna’s seal gets him temporarily killed, and Xanxus reaches 100-year-vengance-plot levels of overprotective big brother. WIP - Unposted
17.8.               Music of the Spheres: Crossover with SM – Post Stars Usagi and Post Vongola Inheritance Tsuna are cousins who meet for the first time ever only after the Vongola’s enemies kidnap Ikkuko and Shingo. Usagi gets taken into protective custody by her Mafia relatives without being given the chance to say she doesn’t need it. Usagi then proceeds to seduce all the women, charm all the men, and accidently throw Iemitsu out the nearest window every time he’s in the same room she is. Chaptered, WIP - Posted
17.8.1. MotS - Celestial Chorus: Chibiusa’s arrival has Usagi dragging her family to Namimori to prove that Chibiusa isn’t their cousin and things get wildly out of hand. Meta
17.8.2. MotS - Sing In Exaltation: The Shingo from The Sharp Knife Of A Short Life hears the name of his ‘cousin in Namimori’ and immediately begins to meddle. Meta
17.9.               Overlooking the Obvious: They say that to truly know someone you need to walk a mile in their shoes. The adage is proven true rather dramatically when a misappropriated Possession Bullet ends up switching Gokudera and Hibari into each other’s bodies. Oneshot, Prompt Fill - Posted
17.10.           Reach For The Sky: Kamen Rider Sora and his team are the protectors of Namimori against the invasion of Youma from the dark dimension. Reborn shows up to tutor the last remaining Vongola Heir and ends up in the middle of a longstanding battle against the Forces of Evil. Does the World Greatest Hitman have what it takes to guide the mysterious masked Rider towards his true strength? Stay tuned to find out! Drabbles, Prompt Fill - Posted
17.11.           When the Nightingale Sings: Sky Flames are Dragons, and when a Sky is Sealed they turn into True Dragons once said Seal breaks. Tsuna has the Best Treasures Ever. Reborn is confused but willing to roll with it. Hayato needs to do all the research. Drabbles, Prompt Fill - Posted
17.12.           Where the Sky Meets the Sea: Crossover with OP – The ASL Trio are reborn as Sawada Tsunayoshi’s younger brothers, and the Will of D means they remember everything. Sawada Iemitsu might once have been Akagami no Shanks and despite lacking his memories knows better than to keep secrets from his wife. (Iemitsu does keep a lot of secrets from Nono, such as the fact that he has more than one son.) Iemitsu redirects Xanxus’ attention to the Family traitors, Nono never meets Tsuna, and nobody gets sealed. Then Reborn shows up, and everything is now on fire. Oneshot, Prompt Fill - Posted
17.13.
18. KYOU KARA MAOU
18.1.              The Needs Of Our Natures: Wolfram decides to prove exactly how much his mother’s son he really is and seduces Yuuri. Wolfram seduces Yuuri like it’s his job. (Yuuri likes it.) WIP - Unposted
19. MARVEL
19.1.               An Assemblage of Ice and Fire: Crossover with GOT – Team Iron Man focus, since Tony is reincarnated as Ned Stark. Meta
19.2.               Iron Laced: Crossover with TMNT – Maria Carbonell was actually Oroku Karai in disguise because she was on vacation from being a member of the Council of Shadows. Karai and all the Turtles accessed magic ninja dragon powers when they took over the Council and Karai-as-Maria passed that down to Tony. So Tony is actually a dragon and an encounter with the Enchantress leaves him locked in his dragon form. WIP - Unposted
19.3.               Miles To Go: Post-MCU Civil War almost-Time Travel where Tony grieves so hard he sends an Extremis injector capsule to the year before the Winter Soldier murdered his parents. Said capsule lands in front of a wasted 15-year-old Tony in the aftermath of a frat party. Cue the face hugger scene. Tony gets an Extremis upgrade about 30 years ahead of schedule and it’s the only reason he survives the memory download without his brain turning into mush. WIP - Unposted
19.4.               Perception: Instead of killing Scott in X3, Dark Phoenix instead fixes the brain damage that prevented him from controlling his optic blasts and then shunts him trough time an space. Scott wakes up 18-years-old in Stryker’s lab and proceeds to hijack Wolverine’s rampage so that they can both escape. James Howlett is impressed, and Cyclops hates everything but especially time travel because it ruins all his fallback plans. Chaptered, WIP - Posted
20. NARUTO
20.1.               A Feather’s Weight: Crossover with FFVII – Kakashi and Obito, along with their respective subordinates, are reincarnated in Wutai, and are thus in position to undermine a lot of Hojo’s plans simply by being themselves. WIP - Unposted
20.2.               A Space Between Ice and Fire: Crossover with GOT – The Konoha Founders and their siblings are reincarnated as Starks and Baratheons and manage to save the Realms of Men while resolving their many and varied issues with one another. Meta
20.3.               A Widening Gyre: Rin survives the Chidori and her existence is now an S-class secret. Said S-class secret distracts Obito on his way to ambush Kushina’s labour and several different chase scenes take place. They all end up in the ROOT base made from one of Tobirama’s old labs and instead of Kyuubi getting loose Team Ro, the Fourth Hokage’s team of bodyguards, Obito, Anko, and all of ROOT plus Danzo himself get dumped into the Warring Clans Era. Obito kills Danzo in a panic when he realizes that taking the Bijuu means killing Rin, Kakashi sacrifices himself again, and there is a lot more running around. Kakashi suborns ROOT en masse, Obito is stupidly overpowered and homicidal but it’s okay because Kakashi is playing damsel in distress and distracting him. The Senju and the Uchiha are all really confused by these kids, there are far too many mistaken identities, and Konoha gets founded much earlier than in canon. Meta
20.4.               According to Custom: Hashirama and Madara should not be left unsupervised (that’s why Mito and Touka tend to lurk nearby when they have tea together) because it causes them to get Brilliant Ideas. This time they decide to make friends with one another’s little brothers. How Madara went from being “nice” to Tobirama to courting the oblivious younger Senju is still something of a mystery, but there are several bets riding on when Tobirama is going to realize what’s going on. Oneshot, Prompt Fill - Posted
20.5.               Around the River Bend: Tobirama feels Itama die and runs to the river to mourn. Quite predictably he meets Madara there, and the course of History changes. Oneshot, Prompt Fill - Posted
20.6.               Colours and Promises: Set a decade after the Evil has been defeated and life returned to normal, Tobirama (once the magical superhero Dragon) is still living with the side effects of sacrificing everything to save the world while he was still a teenager. Notes on a piano, and a familiar voice singing a familiar song. Tobirama finds Madara (once the magical superhero Phoenix) and finally gets to enjoy his victory. Love can be killed, but it never dies, only ever taking on new shapes as we move on with our lives. Oneshot, Prompt Fill - Posted
20.7.               Dare Not Speak Its Name: Madara is Demi as all get out aka Madara’s a virgin with a shy dick. Also known as the AU where Madara proposes marriage to Tobirama for the sake of peace and the children. The only reason Izuna approves is because the thought of Tobirama suffering a lifetime of blueballs is hilarious to him. Meta
20.8.               Heavy as the Mountain: Team 7 is losing the fight against Kaguya, but Obito and Kakashi perform a last-minute sacrifice that means the kids survive. It also causes them all to be de-aged by over a decade and thrown back in time to the Warring Clans Era. Kakashi and Obito die, Team 7 gets adopted by presumably-Hatake Kanna, then a few years later they run into Uchiha Izuna and it all descends into chaos. (Team 7 takes total advantage of everything to get their revenge on Zetsu and maybe fix some of Konoha’s longstanding issues at the same time.)  Oneshot, Prompt Fill – Posted
20.8.1. Crumble To The Sea: The adventures of time travelling Team 7 as they get adopted by the Uchiha Clan, arrange to make Izuna’s life miserable until he proves worthy of courting their An-chan, and get aggressively mother-henned by Uchiha Madara. (The last one came as a bit of a surprise.) Kurama ends up adopting the Uchiha Clan because he likes frustrating Zetsu, and Team 7 appreciates the extra time to grow taller before they need to go weed whacking. Concept
20.9.               In Konoha We Dance: The Uchiha Clan has a tradition of belly dancing and it fixes everything that was wrong with Konoha in canon. Series
20.9.1. O-Bon Appetite: Thanks to his dance training Izuna manages the core control to dodge Tobirama’s sword enough to avoid a fatal wound and Konoha starts off on more equal footing. Tobirama then walks into a traditional Uchiha celebration and his brain shuts off. Oneshot, Prompt Fill - Posted
20.9.2. Hot Like Burning: Kushina drags Minato to the Uchiha Police Office Party so she can make time with Mikoto and there is so much skin, Minato was not emotionally prepared for this. Fugaku takes advantage of the Yondaime’s weakness as only an Uchiha can and the glorious ‘ship FuMiKuMi sets sail. Oneshot, Prompt Fill - Posted
20.9.3. Got This Fire Burning: Overnight shifts at the Mission Desk gets boring. Konoha ninja like to dance, because dancing isn’t boring. Kakashi shows them all how it’s done when a member of Team 7 hits it. Oneshot, Prompt Fill - Posted
20.10.           Karma, and the Repercussions Thereof: Crossover with KHR – Legendary Ninja from the Elemental Countries get reincarnated into KHR and proceed to adopt all the Magic Rainbow Fire Children. Nono and Iemitsu suffer. Series - WIP
20.10.1. WIP, Chaptered - Posted
20.10.2.1. Concept
20.10.2.2.  Karmic Justice – Providence: Madara finds Xanxus on the streets while hunting in Italy for the Man in the Iron Mask. Wrath Flame calls to Wrath Flame and Madara instantly adopts the delightfully savage little boy. Then Namimori happens, and Tsuna’s seal gets him temporarily killed, and Xanxus reaches 100-year-Xanatos-Gambit-vengance-plot levels of overprotective big brother. WIP - Unposted
20.11.           Look the Innocent Flower: Orochimaru gets the Hat instead of Minato because instead of working for Danzo he creates his Baby-no-Jutsu (the same one that produced Rogu and Mitsuki) and that’s how Orochimaru accidently turns Tenzo into the Orochimaru-and-Tsunade lovechild while field testing some gene-splicing adoption techniques. Sarutobi is so delighted by all the babies he names Orochimaru his successor without any further debate. Konoha proceeds to become a somewhat androgynous, gender-fluid utopia full off affectionate, friendly people who only want you for your body. Orochimaru refuses to allow hypocrisy in his Konoha and loyalty to ones comrades is not only encouraged, it’s enforced. Meta
20.12.           Negotiation is an Artform: Remix of The Art of Negotiation by Kage88 – Konoha’s Founders take a trip to Uzushio and the Uzumaki are annoyingly persistent in their attentions, even when said attentions are unwanted. Tobirama’s political savvy is not to be underestimated, and Tobirama’s just as ridiculously overprotective of his loved ones as his relatives are of him. Bitchy pining resolves into dating, and the only reason Tobirama lets Hashirama get away with betting on his love life is because Hashirama was the only one who had faith in Tobirama making the first move. Oneshot, Fandom Exchange Fill - Complete
20.13.           No Evil Abolishing Resentment System: Post Kaguya’s return, Madara gets bound by a System determined to help Madara turn all his Resentment Level into Love Points via a quick transmigration plot. Transmigrator!Madara gets to kiss-kiss fall in love with Reincarnator!Tobirama 55 times in a row. I promise that all the gratuitous makeout sessions are plot relevant. Meta
20.14.           Only Fools Rush In: Also known as the Uchiha Get Catnipped AU – the scene of Rin’s suicide is a few seconds off from canon and this not only results in Rin remaining alive, but Obito is also welcomed back to life so enthusiastically by his teammates that his Makengyou spontaneously manifests. A year or so later, Danzo attempts to use an experimental drug to weaken the Uchiha Clan enough for ROOT to have an easy time killing them and/or an excuse for eradicating the entire Clan. Only the drug is a happy-making drug that has every single member of the Clan manifest the Makengyou and immediately run off to snuggle their friends, family, and sundry other precious people. Meta
20.15.           Red in Hand and Claw: Madara has Raptor Summons. This fact is significantly more terrifying than anyone outside of the Uchiha Clan is really aware of. Oneshot, Prompt Fill - Posted
20.16.           Roads Diverged: Kakashi from a Darker-Than-Canon AU ends his fight with Obito with mutual destruction, and as they both lay dying Kakashi confesses to having always loved Obito. Obito being Obito and therefore unholy levels of Extra even for an Uchiha, proceeds to use Edo Tensai on Team 7 in order to heal Kakashi and then fling him through dimensions until he lands in a Lighter-Than-Canon AU where Kakashi sees Rin in time to avoid hitting her with the Chidori. Things spiral from there. Chaptered, WIP - Posted
20.17.           Spite And Fury: A crossover with the “Original Goods” Proud Immortal Demon Way from Scum Villains Self-Saving System – Uchiha Madara and Shen Jiu get combined into a single person and Cang Qiong is not ready for this much concentrated asshole. Too bad for them, the new-and-improved Shen Qingqui is here to stay. Meta
20.18.           That We Answer to Our Stars: Crossover with SW – Kaguya’s reality warp has some strange side effects to the point of ridiculousness. All the Uchiha to ever exist are resurrected and then dumped wholesale onto an alien deathworld that is essentially what Training Ground 44 would be if it was allowed to cover an entire planet. The Uchiha proceed to seduce the Jedi and foil all of Palpatine’s plans for galactic domination. Meta, Chaptered WIP - Posted
20.19.           The Memory Remains: Canon divergence via the reincarnation of Uchiha Izuna, his wife Kanna, and Senju Touka as Uchiha Obito, Hatake Kakashi, and Nohara Rin. Yes, they retained all their memories. Yes, Konoha is going to suffer for its sins against the children. Yes, this is going to end in a Team Minato threesome. Meta
20.20.           The Thin Line: Kakashi loses patience with the Sandaime when no appreciable action is taken to remove Danzo from power even after Kakashi literally reports to Sarutobi’s face that he was ordered by Danzo to assassinate the Third Hokage. So Kakashi crashes an Uchiha Clan meeting and asks them to run away with him and his cute little brothers to a lovely tropical Island. Cue the Uchiha Exodus That Fucks Over Canon. Kakashi and the Uchiha Clan proceed to re-found Uzushio and collect a few S-class missing nin along the way. Meta, WIP - Unposted
20.21.           The Waters and the Wild: The Senju are High Court Fae, and the Uchiha are Wild Hunt Shapeshifters. Tobirama attempts to interrupt Hashirama and Madara during their riverside meeting, only it backfires when he realizes that Madara is his Soulmate. Also the Uchiha are “clothing optional” and Tobirama was not emotionally prepared for this. Oneshot, Prompt Fill – Posted
20.22.           To Linger In Dreams: After Kaguya takes over his body Madara gets yeeted out of reality into the Void. An eldritch Void god takes an interest in Madara and chucks Madara into a Magic Fantasy AU and Madara is even more not-Human than he was before. Also known as that really fucked up AU with cursed ABO dynamics. Meta
20.23.           Truth in Hyperbole: Shinobi are what happen when Aliens and Humans have kids, Bloodline Talents are what happens when Kami and Youkai ancestry gets added to the pot. Most of the time Shinobi stay mostly Human. Sometimes they don’t. Sometimes they really don’t. Series - WIP
20.23.1.                Blood Price: Tobirama wakes up after being killed and proceeds to resurrect his little brothers and Madara’s little brothers. Tobirama would resurrect Madara too but Madara had already managed to resurrect himself. Oneshot, Comm. Fill - Posted

20.23.4.                Come Away: Zetsu is targeting Obito in another attempt to create the Rinnegan. Kakashi has his first “near death” experience and Obito is not amused at all. Neither is Rin. Team 7 is overprotective and codependent regardless of the generation in question. Oneshot, Prompt Fill - Posted
20.23.5.                Quoth the Raven: Danzo’s schemes got him chased out of Konoha to escape execution, and he invades during the Chunin Exams in order to get his revenge. Summoning Tobirama using the Edo Tensai was probably not the best plan. Oneshot, Prompt Fill - Posted
20.24.           Tsukumogami No Kankurou: While he is still very young, Kankurou signs a Summons contract with the Tsukumogami (aka the Muppet Theater Troupe) and then proceeds to interrupt Yashamaru’s “attack” on Gaara while simultaneously wreaking havoc across the entirety of Sunagakure. All of this is done to get back at Rasa for not letting Kankurou play with his baby brother. The Middle Child Syndrome is strong in this one. Never underestimate the power of petty spite. Oneshot, Prompt Fill - Posted
20.25.           Twice is Happenstance: As a side effect of the battle against Kaguya breaking through dimensions, the ghosts of the Uchiha Clan send their memories as far back as possible. On the eve of his younger brother’s assassinations, Uchiha Madara wakes up with memories of being Indra and Sasuke. All the Uchiha have memories of their past and future lives combining with their current selves, and it causes something of a fracas while it gets sorted out. Cue the Uchiha Exodus That Fucks Over Canon. Oneshot - Posted
20.25.1.                Enemy Action: The building of Uchihatlantis, the knockback effects of remembering more than one lifetime, and what happens when the Uchiha start to go back out into the world in order to hunt down their spouses and mess up Zetsu’s plans. Meta
20.26.           Two Steps Back: Retired Rokudaime Hatake Kakashi accidently has his first vacation ever interrupted when he visits the Uzushiogakure ruins and gets slingshot back an incarnation or two due to triggering a derelict seal. Kakashi being Kakashi, he proceeds to continue with his vacation until he has a drunken bar hookup with Uchiha Izuna and now the beloved younger brother of Uchiha “I-can-fight-five-armies-and-win” Madara is stalking Kakashi in order to recite (hilariously awful) poetry about the beauty of Kakashi’s kenjutsu. Shinobi-versus-pirate culture clash is frequent and hilarious. WIP - Unposted
20.29.           Worth of a Thousand Words: Political Hostage!Tobirama gets caught by the Uchiha just before he manages to use Hiraishin in battle for the first time. The Uchiha are all sensors that use Ninshu techniques otherwise since lost to time to communicate among themselves. 21.1.               1001 Demonic Nights: An AU Rikuo who was dragged into Yomi along with his Hakkai Yakko during the battle against the Nue manages to escape from hell by jumping into an alternate reality where his mother Wakana had a threesome with Rihan and Otome. Wakana left to take over her family shrine without telling her lovers that she was pregnant. The Rikuo who was born as a result died as an infant from the Nue’s curse on Nurarihyon’s bloodline. 22.2.               How Far I’ll Go: Roger had other lovers before he met Rouge and one of them was a Fishwife that he met at a Peacemoot. Their daughter was a mermaid and thus needed to remain on Fishman Island for her own safety. The World Government is so Human-centric that they don’t bother looking into any of Roger’s lady friends from the other races. Gol D Ann gives no shits about anybodies prejudices and when her mixed up genetics mean her feet come in about 20 years early she immediately takes off to track down her baby brother. Goldfish is Luffy’s favourite sibling and Ann is delighted to find three baby brothers for the price of one. WIP - Unposted
22.3.               Rumour, Slander, Hearsay: Garp is even worse at interpersonal communication than in canon and now the entire Marine fleet thinks that Monkey D Dragon is an oversexed degenerate who keep dumping his illegitimate spawn on his poor heroic father’s doorstep. Otherwise known as Dragon adopts ASL and they seek a glorious Revolution. Meta
22.4.               Those Who Favour Fire: Ace survives Marineford, even if only in spirit, because the Goddess of the Sea answered the prayer of another version of Ace. Waking up in the place of his 17-year-old murdered doppelganger, Ace now has to deal with raising a 7-year-old Luffy and escaping the notice of the Marines. Oh, and his murdered younger self is hanging around as a ghost, all the younger versions of Luffy’s crewmates keep showing up on Ace’s boat, and Ace keeps getting tripped up over how much more horrible this world is compared to the one he came from. Since all of his brothers are dead, Leo sees no reason not to make the most of this “lifelong bond of magic and spirit” and adopts Louise as his little sister. To Say Nothing of the Dog (and the novel that inspired it – Jerome K. Jerome’s Three Men in a Boat)
Blackout/All Clear
Assorted:
The Last of the Winnebagos
Ø  Connie loves her historical research. Blackout/All Clear actually lasts as long as the Blitz, but anything in the Oxford Time Travel series is worth reading. Doomsday Book reads like prophecy in retrospect.
Ø  One idea: Hi! This is the human condition! How fucking amazing is that?!?
Ø  Gut-punch adventure with extra consequences. Background action.
Ø   I’d have to say that Doomsday Book is the funniest book about the black death I’ve ever read, which isn’t saying much. To Say Nothing of the Dog is classic farce, though. Girl’s got range.
Neal Stephenson
Snow Crash (After the apocalypse, the world will be ruled by Home-Owners Associations. Be afraid.)
Cryptonomicon
Anathem
Seveneves
Ø  Neal writes big, undisciplined, unfocused books that keep unfolding in your mind for months after you’ve read them. He’s a very guy-type writer, in spite of a female protagonist or two. Seveneves, be warned, starts out brilliant and devolves into extreme meh.
Ø  Big. Fucking. Ideas.
Ø  Battles, crashes, fistfights, parachute jumps, nuclear powered motorcycles and extreme gardening action. Is there an MPAA acronym for that?
Ø   Humor dry enough to be garnished with two green olives on a stick.
  Christopher Moore
Pine Cove Series:
Practical Demonkeeping
The Lust Lizard of Melancholy Cove
The Stupidest Angel: A Heartwarming Tale of Christmas Terror (Okay, yeah, Christmas. But Christmas with zombies, so that’s all right.)
Fluke (Not strictly Pine Cove, but in the same universe. Ever wonder why whales sing? They’re ordering Pastrami sandwiches. I’m not kidding.)
Death Merchant Chronicles:
A Dirty Job
Secondhand Souls (Best literary dogs this side of Jack London)
Coyote Blue (Kind of an outlier. Overlapping characters)
Shakespeare Series:
Fool
The Serpent of Venice
Shakespeare for Squirrels
Assorted:
Island of the Sequined Love Nun (Cargo cults with Pine Cove crossovers. I have a theory that the characters in this book are direct descendants of certain characters in Stephenson’s Cryptonomicon.)
Lamb: The Gospel According to Biff, Christ’s Childhood Pal (So I have a favorite first-century wonder rabbi. Who doesn’t?)
Sacre Bleu
Noir
Ø  Not for the squeamish, the easily offended, or those who can’t lovingly embrace the fact that the human species is pretty much a bunch of idiots snatching at moments of grace.
Ø  No big ideas whatever. Barely any half-baked notions.
Ø  Enthusiastic geek adventure. Action as a last resort.
Ø   Nonstop funny from beginning to end.
Ben Aaronovitch’s Rivers of London Series
Rivers of London
Moon Over Soho
Whispers Under Ground
Broken Homes
Foxglove Summer
The Hanging Tree
The Furthest Station
Lies Sleeping
The October Man
False Value
Tales From the Folly
Ø  Lean, self-deprecating police procedurals disguised as fantasy novels. Excellent writing.
Ø  These will not expand your mind. They might expand your Latin vocabulary.
Ø  Crisply described action, judiciously used. Whodunnit adventure. It’s all about good storytelling.
Ø  Generous servings of sly humor. Aaronovitch is a geek culture blueblood who drops so many inside jokes, there are websites devoted to indexing them.
  John Scalzi
Old Man’s War Series:
Old Man’s War
Questions for a Soldier
The Ghost Brigades
The Sagan Diary
The Last Colony
Zoe’s Tale
After the Coup
The Human Division
The End of All Things
Ø  Star Trek with realpolitik instead of optimism.
Ø  The Big Idea is that there’s nothing new under the sun. Nor over it.
Ø  Action-adventure final frontier saga with high stakes.
Ø  It’s funny when the characters are being funny, and precisely to the same degree that the character is funny.
Assorted:
The Dispatcher
Murder by Other Means
Redshirts (Star Trek, sideways, with occasional optimism)
Ø  Scalzi abandons (or skewers) his space-opera tendencies with these three little gems of speculative fiction. Scalzi’s gift is patience. He lets the scenario unfold like a striptease.
Ø  What-if thought experiments that jolt the brain like espresso shots.
Ø  Action/misadventure as necessary to accomplish the psychological special effects.
Ø  Redshirts is satire, so the humor is built-in, but it’s buried in the mix.
  David Wong/Jason Pargin
John Dies at the End
This Book is Full of Spiders: Seriously, Dude, Don’t Touch It
What the Hell Did I Just Read?
Ø  Pargin clearly starts his novels with a handful of arresting scenes and images, then looses the characters on an unsuspecting world to wander wither they will.
Ø  Ideas aren’t as big or obvious as Heinlein, but they are there to challenge all your assumptions in the same way that Heinlein’s were.
Ø  Classic action/adventure for anyone raised on Scooby-Doo.
Ø  Occasional gusts of humor in a climate that’s predominantly tongue-in-cheek.
Jodi Taylor’s Chronicles of St. Mary’s Series
Just One Damned Thing After Another
The Very First Damned Thing

Ø  The * denotes a short story or novella. Okay, try to imagine Indiana Jones as a smartassed redheaded woman with a time machine and a merry band of full contact historians. I love history, and I especially love history narrated by a woman who can kick T. Rex ass.
Ø  The ideas are toys, not themes. Soapy in spots.
Ø  Action! Adventure! More action! More adventure! Tea break. Action again!
Ø  Big, squishy dollops of snort-worthy stuff.
Laurie R. King’s Mary Russell Series
The Beekeeper's Apprentice
A Monstrous Regiment of Women
A Letter of Mary
The Moor

The Murder of Mary Russell
Mary Russell's War And Other Stories of Suspense
Island of the Mad
Riviera Gold
The Art of Detection (Strictly speaking, this is in the action!lesbian Detective Kate Martinelli series, but it crosses over to the Sherlock Holmes genre. If you’ve ever wondered how Holmes would deal with the transgendered, this is the book.)
Ø  Sherlock Holmes retires to Sussex, keeps bees, marries a nice Jewish girl who is smarter than he is and less than half his age and he’s mentored since she was fifteen in an extremely problematic power dynamic relationship that should repulse me but doesn’t, somehow, because this is the best Sherlock Holmes pastiche out there. Mary should have been a rabbi, but it is 1920, so she learns martial arts and becomes an international detective instead. Guest appearances by Conan Doyle, Kimball O’Hara, T.E. Lawrence, Cole Porter, and the Oxford Comma.
Ø  Nothing mind-expanding here, unless the levels of meta present in a fictional world that is about how the fictional world might not be as fictional as you thought come as a surprise to anyone in the era of tie-in books, films, tv, interactive social media and RPGs.
Ø  If these two geniuses can’t catch the bad guys with their dazzling brilliance, they will happily kick some ass. Adventure takes center stage and the action sequences are especially creative.
Ø  Amusement is afoot.
 Jasper Fforde’s Thursday Next Series
The Eyre Affair
Lost in a Good Book
The Well of Lost Plots
Something Rotten
First Among Sequels
One of Our Thursdays is Missing
The Woman Who Died a Lot
Ø  In a world where Librarians are revered and Shakespeare is more popular than the Beatles, someone has to facilitate the weekly anger-management sessions for the characters of Wuthering Heights, if only to keep them from killing each other before the novel actually ends. That someone is Thursday Next – Literature Cop.
Ø  Mind-bending enough to give Noam Chomsky material for another hundred years.
Ø  Adventure aplenty. Action? Even the punctuation will try to kill you.
Ø  This is a frolicsome look at humorous situations filled with funny people. Pretty much a full house in the laugh department.
Sir Terry Pratchett’s Discworld Series/City Watch Arc
Guards! Guards!
Men at Arms
Feet of Clay
Jingo
The Fifth Elephant
Night Watch
Thud!
Snuff
Raising Steam
Ø  If this were a game of CLUE, the answer would be Niccolo Machiavelli in Narnia with a Monty Python. Everything you think you know about books with dragons and trolls and dwarves and wizards is expertly ripped to shreds and reassembled as social satire that can save your soul, even if it turns out you don’t really have one. Do not be fooled by the Tolkien chassis – there’s a Vonnegut-class engine at work.
Ø  Caution: Ideas in the Mirror Universe May be Larger Than They Appear
Ø  The City Watch arc has plenty of thrilling action sequences. Some other of the fifty-million Discworld novels have less. Every one of them is nonstop adventure. Most of the adventure, however, takes the form of characters desperately trying to avoid thrilling action sequences.
Ø  Funny? Even though I’ve read every book in the series at least ten times, I still have to make sure I have cold packs on hand in case I laugh so hard I rupture something.

Panels Far, Far Away: A Week in Star Wars Comics 8/28/19
Tumblr media
A crowded week of comics brings the end of Galaxy’s Edge, two new Age of Resistance tales, and a one page wonder from Charles Soule.
Star Wars Age of Resistance: General Hux #1 written by Tom Taylor and art by Leonard Kirk
Tumblr media
There are few characters that are as delightfully contemptible as Armitage Hux. Played with sniveling petulance by Domnhall Gleeson, this rabid cur has become the face of the First Order’s own take on fascism and male insecurity.
One larger criticism of Hux as a character is that his position as a punching bag for other big bads robs him of menace or presence. Writer Tom Taylor finds a way to take that concept and twist it, revealing the violent underbelly to Hux’s seemingly fragile exterior.
The set up to “Marooned” feels fairly familiar for Star Wars. Forcing two rivals to survive alongside one another following a shuttle crash bares more than a passing resemblance to Star Wars Rebels episode, “The Honorable Ones.” While Rebels used this story structure to force two enemies to find the humanity in one another, Taylor opts for a darker approach and shows how Hux uses Kylo Ren to help him manipulate those around him. Taylor paints a Hux that knows how to play the room but also harbors a violent and simmering need for vengeance. It goes a long way to transforming the man into a force to be reckoned with. It makes a case that maybe all those beatings dished out to Armitage over the course of two films may be building toward something awful.
Leonard Kirk’s art is best at the moments when his characters do their worst. There is a certain eerie quality to how he draws Hux and he captures this man’s own sadism in unsettling ways.
Score: B+
Star Wars Age of Resistance: Poe Dameron #1 written by Tom Taylor and art by Ramon Rosanas
Tumblr media
Out of the central characters in the current Star Wars trilogy, few have enjoyed the limelight quite as much as Poe Dameron. In addition to starring in all three of the sequel films, Poe also has a regular guest role on Star Wars Resistance and even got his own comic series that ran for over thirty issues.
In this way, there just isn’t really much for writer Tom Taylor to offer. While there certainly are aspects of Poe’s character that could be explored (give him a boyfriend dammit), most of this hot shot’s life has been chronicled already.
Taylor finds a nice solution in giving us a much earlier story than we have previously experienced. We follow Poe during his New Republic days as he attempts to hunt down and capture a mysterious freighter that may have ties to the newly formed Resistance.
There isn’t much drama here, but Taylor has clear fun in giving Poe a relatively low stakes mission to flex his pilot muscles and discover a less restrictive alternative to the New Republic navy. Taylor holds the identity of Poe’s mysterious rival until the last page, and while it isn’t necessarily shocking, the reveal is rife with dramatic irony and offers a fun twist on one of the more contested dynamics in The Last Jedi.
Score: B
Star Wars Galaxy’s Edge #5 written by Ethan Sacks and art by Will Sliney
Tumblr media
It’s a standoff in Dok-Ondar’s shop of oddities as the past, present, and future of Batuu come crashing together. The result is a busy finale that is fun, but ultimately disposable and lacking in direction.
Kendoh’s crew has Dok-Ondar cornered in their attempt to steal half of the Sword of Khashyun and to make matters worse, the First Order has arrived to put a stop to the criminality of Ondar’s shop. Oh! And the old Ithorian still has to tell us what exactly happened with him and Doctor Aphra on Moraband. Everyone has a trick up their sleeves and who exactly is playing who will become apparent soon enough, but not after a few blaster bolts are shot and sarlacc’s are fed.
As you can probably tell, there’s a lot happening in the conclusion to Galaxy’s Edge. Not only did Ethan Sacks hold over the ending of his Doctor Aphra centered tale from last week, but there’s also three different factions locked in a room together with their sights on valuable treasure. It could have made for a fun and tense issue, but there just isn’t enough breathing room for many of Sack’s creative choices to pay off. In particular, Kendoh and her team were never really compelling characters so investment their fate and success is a hard sell. Dok-Ondar also takes a far more sinister turn here than one would expect from previous installments and it ends the comic on an oddly nefarious note.
In general, there’s a weird sort of disconnect happening throughout Galaxy’s Edge. There’s a particularly off putting sequence that sees the comic’s First Order antagonist rattling off about responsibility and order and how Batuu is in need of this sort of direction and hegemony. Will Sliney accompanies this monologue with brief stills of various locations at Batuu or, in a more cynical fashion, attractions at Disneyland. It feels as if the creative team got to the end of their script and realized that they hadn’t really done enough to plug the land that the comic ties into and this segment was thrown in. If we had spent more time with the planet of Batuu or its inhabitants maybe we could’ve had an emotional connection to this sequence, but as it stands, it feels hollow and calculated.
Sliney’s art also feels off here. The blocking for the big crowded showdown in Dok-Ondar’s shop is messy and confusing. For being the climax of five issues, it makes for an underwhelming set piece and disappointingly confusing to read.
Score: C
Marvel Comics #1000: “Red Four” written by Charles Soule and art by Terry Dodson
Tumblr media
Well, turns out Marvel snuck in a tiny bit of Star Wars outside of its main line of books this week. The highest profile comic from the House of Ideas today consists of eighty different short stories each told with various creative teams to capture the full history of the Marvel universe and publisher. Given how important Star Wars was to the company in the 70’s and 80’s and now again in present day, it’s only appropriate that one of those eighty pages get dedicated to the galaxy far, far away.
As a whole, Marvel Comics #1000 is a fun if disjointed love letter to all things Marvel. Some stories work, some do not, but it’s really hard to be too critical of the individual pieces given the strict creative mandate that the various talents had to work under. Even with that considered, Charles Soule and Terry Dodson turn in a sizzler of a little Star Wars story that sees Darth Vader evading defeat by a team of Rebel pilots. It’s short, effective, and another bit of comics based coolness for the Dark Lord. Soule always had a great sense of how to write Vader and his punchy script makes the most of the single page. Dodson’s economical panel structure is to be commended. It’s a tight little story that is sure to bring a smirk to Vader fans.
Is it worth the $9.99 price of admission alone? Hell no. The story’s already available all over the place online if you really want to check it out. If you are a Marvel fan in addition to a Star Wars one, it is definitely worth giving this tribute a look, but if you don’t like to cross your fandom wires too much, probably give this a skip.

You’re Now Mine (P2)
Title: You’re Now Mine (Persephone Drabble) Summary:  Fulfilling a request for @lets-personofinterestontumbir! – “Could you do a drabble for the Persephone AU I don’t know If you’ve seen once upon a time but the episode 1x07 reminded me a lot of this story when the evil queen ripped out the huntsmen’s heart if you could do something like that it would be awesome. Thank you.” Words: 3,131 Warnings: DARK AF, Emotional/Mental abuse Author’s Notes: Okay, Castiel tag people, it’s *not* Castiel, but it’s Castiel’s vessel?
Part 1 || Part 3 || Masterpost  || Fanfic masterpost
“You look… remarkable.”
The gossamer part of the dress trailed up from your wrists to the top of your breasts where blue flowers adorned down to the waist of the dress where the chiffon skirt took over. You were back in your quarters, having just finished getting dressed. Lucifer had taken back to his habit of leaving what he wanted you to wear when he left you while you were sleeping.
He held you close. “What do you say, princess?”
“Thank you.”
“You are such a good pupil. Now, tell me, what does daddy say about undergarments?” You blushed, unaware he could sense that. He smirked at your expression and stated, “I want them off. Now.” His last word was definite.
Pulling away from him, you moved to the bed. Slowly, you pulled them off, making a show of it. You sat down, pulling them down your legs. Lucifer’s pupils were dilated, watching you with lust. Yanking them off from around your ankles, you tossed the pair aside. Standing up, you let your dress fall back down to the ground.
“Hmm. If only you could sit that lovely body on my face at the moment…” Your heart skipped a beat as he paused, considering it. He smirked, “But, love, I have things to do. And you need to accompany me.”
<> <> <>
Again, you found yourself sitting by Lucifer’s – formally Crowley’s – throne. You were getting tired of sitting erect and you tried to push the sleepiness away. Lucifer was hard at work, pouring over old documents and weapons. This is what he had meant about you needing to accompany him. As before, he just liked having you in the room with him, easy access for him to admire you.
The silence in the room was broken when there was a loud crash. You jumped to attention, your eyes moving towards the source of the sound. A demon was standing there, looking like a deer in headlights. A few of Lucifer’s weapons had falling off the cart they had been on and one was definitely broken.
Lucifer slowly stood up straight, his eyes fixated on the demon. The tension in the air could have been cut with a knife as he slowly advanced on the demon. He stood inches taller than it and he peered down his nose at them, glowering.
The demon swallowed sharply, staring terrified back up at him.
“What… did I say… about anyone touching these?” Lucifer asked, his tone dangerous.
“T-t-to not to?” The demon stammered out.
“Exactly!” Lucifer exclaimed with false excitement.
The demon tried to plead. “I’m sorry, sir!”
Lucifer clucked before turning back towards you. Meandering towards you, the demon watched his retreating back with unease. All eyes were on Lucifer as he approached you, stopping in front of you.
Reaching out, he lightly stroked the side of your face. “You’re gonna help me make a decision.” His finger twirled around a strand of your hair, “What should I do, princess?”
You knew what he wanted you to say. This was a demon for gods sake but you felt compassion for it regardless. But Lucifer wanted them dead. And to defy him in front of this room full of people wouldn’t bode well for you.
Pushing your conscious away, you kept eye contact and said evenly, “They disobeyed you.”
Lucifer rose his eyebrows in acknowledgement and pressed, “And?”
You felt sick for suggesting it. “They don’t deserve to be in your presence.”
“Ooh, good job,” Lucifer praised, giving you a kiss on the forehead. He turned around, snapping his fingers, the demon exploding everywhere. The other demons in the room flinched before going back to what they had been doing in a hurry, not wanting to be caught up in Lucifer’s current annoyed and frustrated state. Lucifer turned back to you and sighed dramatically. His hand traced your jaw, “You are quite an asset, darling. I am so relieved I have you by my side to help me make those tough decisions. You keep me in check.”
He gently creeped his fingers down your neck before reaching your chest. “Or… really… do I keep myself in check?” You winced a bit beneath his fingers gently digging into your chest and a malicious grin spread across his face. He gave you a quick kiss. “You are just mouthwatering, princess. Such a good girl. Now, I promise I will be done soon and you can get yourself something to eat.”
With that, he left you to sit again dutifully like his most prized possession should.
<> <> <>
You had been down here for a month at least. Where were Sam and Dean? Surely Crowley would have told them what had happened. You immediately had scolded yourself after thinking that. Crowley was all about the creed every man for himself. If it was a risk to his backside, he wouldn’t do it. He had already exceeded expectations by trying to help you out the first time. Regardless of how that had ended.
Again, you were feeling cooped up. Lucifer, since he had marked you, had not hurt you again. The threat though lingered whenever he stared you down if you did something he considered out of line or if he just felt like reminding you of it, like he did in the throne room that one day. And again, you knew the demons loathed the fact Lucifer considered you his favorite. You tried to avoid interacting with any of them except when it was necessary. Like it had been earlier today…
Interrupting your thoughts, Lucifer walked into your living room, finding you lounging on the couch. The Wii remote was in your hand and you realized you hadn’t been even looking for something to watch for a substantial amount of time, lost in your thoughts.
Lucifer’s eyes ran over you slowly. He commented, “Have you even got dressed today?”
As a matter of fact, you hadn’t. You had been in your pajamas all day and gotten quiet a treat from a demon you had coerced into running an errand for you. Your eyes slid to him and your loose state let your attitude slip.
“Mhm, fuck off,” you murmured, flipping through Netflix.
Lucifer cocked his head to the side, looking at you in shock for a moment before he advanced on you, peering down his nose at you.
You lazily looked up at him and questioned, “What?”
“You’re drunk. How?”
He sounded more angry than confused about how you got the alcohol.
You snorted, moving your eyes back to the TV, moving through Netflix. “I drank alcohol.”
Lucifer’s expression darkened and he replied tightly, “Y/N.”
You knew better than to ignore him when he sounded the way he did. You were toeing the line of his impatience and the memory of him exerting himself over your soul was enough to make you cave. You told him, “I threatened a demon with an exorcism if they didn’t get me it. And I mighta mentioned that you wanted it done and they didn’t question me like a fucking idiot. They’re dead, don’t worry.”
You picked up your glass from the ground and quickly finished it off before he could take it or realize it was there.
Lucifer’s jaw set witnessing that. You gave him an innocent look, waiting for him to respond. He turned, his eyes scanning the room and you realized what he was looking for.
“Where is it?” You didn’t respond and he demanded, “Y/N!”
Mumbling disappointed, you pushed yourself up and bent over the arm of the couch, reaching back to where the bottle was.
You felt a hand on your ass and you stilled. There was a silence shared between the two of you for a few moments.
“Listen to me very carefully, princess,” Lucifer said, his voice low. There was something lurking in his tone. It set you on edge but in excitement rather than nervousness. “You’re going to take that bottle into the kitchen. And then you’re going to go to the bedroom and get yourself nice and naked for me. And then you’re going to walk your pretty little ass back into the kitchen and pour us both a drink.” Your body was alight hearing where he was going with this. He continued, his tone sensual, “And finally, you’re going to come back out here and sit yourself in my lap with said drinks and let me have a good look at you.” He paused and you felt his hand grasp your ass ever so lightly. “Do you understand me?”
“Yes, sir,” you rasped.
He spanked you, “Then do as I asked.”
<> <> <>
You sat straddling him, your drink in your hand. He had removed his trench coat and jacket when you had been gone from the room. It drove you crazy when Castiel had taken off his outwear, leaving him in his shirt and tie. It still had the same effect on you when Lucifer did it.
Lucifer tapped your nose lightly, giving you a playful little smirk. “Your constant remarkable ability to surprise me with your ingenuity in getting what you want is the sole reason you are not in trouble,” Lucifer informed you. He eyed you. “Tell me, where is the demon’s body? And I’m going to assume it was Terry since I haven’t seen him all day.”
“Down the building in a spare room.”
“You grabbed his keys and left here to drag him down the hallway?” You nodded and Lucifer regarded you for a moment. He took a long drink before smacking his lips. “You could have tried to escape after that.”
“Yes…”
“And you didn’t… Or did you?”
You shook your head, “I didn’t.”
Lucifer studied you before agreeing, “You’re telling me the truth. You wanna elaborate on why you wouldn’t?”
Shrugging, you offered nothing. He cocked his head expectantly and you shrugged again, “What good would it do?”
Snorting, Lucifer acknowledged this. “Ah, princess, I was hoping for a more…” he pondered on a word choice before continuing, “…intimate response. But, a logical one is acceptable.”
You took a long drink and he leaned forward, his hand wrapping around you protectively. He continued leaning forward, your body bending back with his movement and he placed his glass on the coffee table. “Finish that,” Lucifer demanded. You did what he asked, taking the rest of your drink before handing it to him. He placed your glass on the table too.
Sitting back into the couch, Lucifer pulled you close, giving you a kiss. “For being so good – despite your small slip up of not asking me permission to get yourself a bottle – I think you deserve attention… praise…”
You whimpered when he reached down in between the two of you, his fingers finding your sex. He stroked you gently, his fingers teasing.
His eyes were locked with yours. Previously Castiel’s pretty baby blues staring at you with lust. “Wanna place bets on how fast I can rile you up?” Lucifer asked, his voice low and rumbling in his chest.
Christ.
His fingers parted your lips and your hands found their way to his shoulders, holding onto them. His long fingers delved deep and you bit your bottom lip, slowly beginning to move yourself in tandem with his movements.
Lucifer worked with precision, paying close attention to your clit, brushing his thumb over it as he added another finger. You let yourself get lost in the rhythm, riding his hand. At this rate, he was going to get you to come in record time. Your eyes met his and he chuckled, pleased, seeing your expression. It only encouraged him to put more pressure on your clit.
Your breathing was becoming erratic as he circled your nub, pushing you towards the edge at lightning speed.
Lucifer wet his lips watching you gasp, your desperation apparent as you rocked your hips to provide more friction. He husked, “Who would have thought such a small part of your body could have that much effect on you? I have complete control of you, don’t I, princess?”
You came hard, him rubbing you through it. From your blurred vision, you could still make out his expression. Him watching you his eyes hooded with lust.
His lips attacked yours as you came down from your high. One arm wrapped around his neck as he picked you up and your legs wrapped around his waist. Walking towards the bedroom, he placed sloppy kisses along your jawline and on your lips. Dropping you to your feet, he began working on his tie and shirt. He grasped you, yanking you back to him, your skin meeting his bare chest.
“Now that I’ve got you good and ready,” he purred in between kisses. You mewled slightly as he reached down, cupping your ass and he groaned, feeling you grind yourself up against him. The sexual tension between the two of you was electric. He whipped you around, pulling you close again. Moving your hair over your shoulder, he sucked at your neck, nipping every so often. You felt him pressing into your ass, his erection coming full on.
[["Bend over," he growled into your ear, one hand wrapped up in your hair as he tugged your head toward him. You fell forward with a gasp as he released you, with a small push toward the bed. You hesitated and turned to see him removing the last of his clothes, his cock jutting out to meet you.
You fell to your knees in front of him, earning a raised eyebrow and a tick in his jaw in response.
"Please let me?" You breathed onto his cock. And Lucifer would punish you for disobeying but you’re a vision, a perfect picture of prayer bowing on your knees to him, asking permission to worship him like this.]] He had given you an order and when he was this riled up, animalistic like, he expected you to follow directions.
He murmured, “How can I refuse you when you look like that, princess…” before he pressed the head of him against your lips softly, granting you permission.
Your lips wrapped around him and he closed his eyes, basking in the pleasure of it. Hollowing your cheeks, you drew a groan from him. Swirling your tongue around him as your head bobbed, you brought your hand up, cupping his balls. His cock engulfed in wet heat quickly brought on precum. You tasted it and you hummed, adding to his pleasure.
Lucifer was not going to come undone in your mouth though.
Beckoning you with a finger, he began to walk backwards towards the bed. You followed on your hands and knees, your mouth still on his cock.
“Mhm, good girl,” he cooed, wrapping his fingers back into your hair, pulling you away from his cock with an audible pop. Scooping you up, he brought you to your feet again.
In new found confidence, you begged, “I want to be on top.”
Lucifer smirked down at you, “Whatever makes you feel in charge, princess.”
You knew you weren’t in charge and it seemed to turn him on that you were trying to regain some control in your relationship. He was taunting and in the moment, you didn’t care.
Climbing on top of him, you sank onto his length, him entering you with ease. You gasped, adjusting to his girth. You began setting a pace, biting your bottom lip as you rode him slowly, him still buried deep. You were full of him.
You felt Lucifer’s hands on your hips, moving back towards your ass, gripping tight. He threw his head back against the pillows, his eyes closed as he began rocking his hips with yours. You let him take the lead. Lucifer held onto your ass as he rammed himself in and out of you, your tits bouncing. Your hands braced the bed on either side of his head as he fucked you. He groaned loudly, unable to control himself.
“Fuck, princess,” he grunted out. “Gonna come inside that pretty little pussy!”
You keened feeling your body rushing towards coming again, his dirty talk amplifying the feeling. His eyelids were heavy with lust watching you above him.
“Such a pretty sight,” he husked, his fingers digging into your hips, before burying himself in you once more, his release hitting him full on. Feeling him empty himself in you sent you over the edge as well and you cried out, convulsing around him.
You collapsed onto his chest, breathing heavily. Your body was covered in a sheen of sweat as you laid there on top of him, skin to skin. You felt Lucifer’s arm move to hold you around your waist, silent. You actually felt content laying there in his embrace. And he didn’t seem to be in a rush to move either.

A few days later, you got up from your chair and walked towards Lucifer. You were ever aware of the few demons in the room watching you with suspicion as you approached their master. Would they consider him yours too? You pushed the thought from your mind, wanting to keep up the courage you had built up to ask him a favor.
Before you even had a chance, it was shot down.
“No,” Lucifer greeted you and you furrowed your brow, caught off guard by the instant negativity. The wind was already leaving your sails, your confidence waning. He saw the look on your face. “Whatever it is that you’re going to ask, it’s no.” You still stared and he let out an exasperated sigh. “You going to try the puppy dog eyes?”
“I haven’t even asked anything,” you finally said quietly.
“Like I said, I can tell you want something. And I’m not in the mood to be granting wishes.”
You word vomited, “I want to go to a park. Or something. I want to go out.”
Lucifer rolled his eyes, turning to face you fully, dropping the papers he was looking over onto the table. “Wow!” he exclaimed mockingly. “You are really not listening today!”
Swallowing sharply, you pleaded, “Please. I’ve been good.”
Lucifer squinted, biting his lip, giving you an incredulous look. "You think I'm gonna let you have the opportunity openly to betray me?"
Your bottom lip warbled, unable to hide your desperation. You were feeling upset and also embarrassed this was happening in front of the other demons in the room.
It did not go unnoticed by Lucifer.
He looked vexed, clenching his fists. “I’ll think about it,” he spat out.
Realizing what he said, you nodded. Turning back, you walked back towards your seat in silence. Internally, you were elated though. Like Persephone, you wouldn’t be caged all the time.

Upcoming plans! :)
Time for 2019, hah hah :D I thought now’s a good time to lay out some future plans, if only to keep you guys in the loop. Some of these might be a while down the line, so I can’t promise these’ll happen by, say, February, lol, but I’m doing my best!
- So, right now, I’m working on another commissioned chapter for My Forbidden Goddess, this time featuring one of Alice’s schoolmates as she comes under Sharani the goddess’ dickgirl-creating influence :D There might be some more Sandra stuff, too! We’ll have to see how it plays out :D This one’s going to feature some size play and big cock humiliation as Alice becomes more willing to use her powers and starts creating her perfect trans harem. After all, what could be more embarrassing for a college girl than suddenly sprouting a fat cock, mid-exam? :P
- After that, there will probably be another commissioned chapter for How I Made Your Mother :) I say probably because it’s a safe assumption the client wants more considering he told me so himself, lol, but you never know, life happens! X) In the second chapter, we’ll be exploring some more Wolf and James’ steady feminization. The client and I talked it over and it’s clear he’s looking for a slightly slower pace on things, so James might not start going trans in the second chapter quite just yet, as originally planned. We’ll get there, though :D For anybody who read The Forsworn Retribution, the client really enjoyed the dynamic between Maximus and Sabrina, if the point of reference helps any. If you like anthro content and curvy transsexuals and don’t mind some male/male stuff until you get there, this one’s for you! It’s gonna go trans/trans, eventually :P
- After those two, I don’t think I’m going to pass up on updating my own stories, again. I miss writing Blimbo and Dreams, lol, and I know there were some people who really liked Destiny, Terry, and where their interracial misadventures in their sleepy little neighbourhood were going. So, I’ll update them again! :) I’m still in the middle of rereading and proofing Dreams (I’m only at the third chapter, fuck me) but I’m really liking how the fixes are coming out. Things make a little more sense here and there, my intention in some scenes is a little clearer, and the grammar’s gotten a tidying. Good stuff!
- After even that, well, I did have some future plans of my own I was still looking forward to. Over the years, I’ve had it brought up a few times, here and there, about where somebody could read Dreams Nightmare. It was the second story in my Dreams series and was removed from Hentai Foundry following the content policy change of yore. I always knew I’d have to rewrite it some day (it’s ancient and terribly written, lol) but if there’s people who really want to see that part of the journey, I was thinking maybe I could just drop it into Google Docs, or something.
- As well, remember those two stories I brought up a little while ago, the original fantasy one about a tired god in a hopeless world, Immortal King, and the one about the trans king and prince who go suitor-hunting amidst much incest, King & Queen? Well, I still plan on doing them! :D It’s just a matter of clearing a little room on my plate so I don’t have too many projects ongoing at once. I might change the name on King & Queen so it isn’t quite so similar to Immortal King, or maybe change IK, I dunno. I’ll figure it out.
- As well, I had an old idea for a story that never got off the ground. I might’ve mentioned it before, where I was feeling particularly inspired post-MGS5 to write up a story about a milfy soldier in a crapsack dystopic world. I was talked out of it in the past by a former acquaintance, but after reading a couple crime novels for funsies, the feeling’s been coming back, so hey, I might sit down and work on it, at some point. :) If I do, keep an eye out for a story called Belladonna! I’d drop the concept sample I came up with ages ago, but this post’s already long, hah hah :P
- Other than that, I’ve recently been thinking about writing Kimmy and Beverly, a lot. I just recently reread the entire Kimmy’s Maid Training story, so I had a lot of fun thinking about which of those girls I might like following into a new story. Clara was very popular, probably because people love her for the femdom/futadom angle she’s heavy with, but people might’ve loved Beverly, even more :) Shelly was a popular favourite, too! Berri and Courtney got some love, but maybe I didn’t round out Hitomi and Aisha enough to get them some vocal fans. I don’t know. People would’ve loved to see the more confident Kimmy go back and have a second go with each of the girls from the start of her week, the ones she wasn’t so confident with.
I do remember that Top to Bottom was thoroughly satisfying to write for a number of reasons, and I remember asking people if they’d like to see more stories in that vein (stories where some hyper-dominant, ultra-aggressive, rape-happy, mind-game-playing, manipulative twat of a t-girl willing to put a guy through hell to forge him into her perfect bottom bitch instead has the tables turned on her and discovers a repressed subby side of her own) and I’m happy to say the response was vocal! I never forgot :D T2B was a very fun project (I wrote the entire first three chapters over one weekend, lmao) so of course I’m open to the idea of more! Again, I just have to clear space on my plate X) When I have too many projects ongoing at once, keeping a rotation slows everything down to a crawl.
- And lastly, whenever I have a few minutes free before crashing for the night, sometimes I write little snippets about Roxxy and Vic. Recently I did one about Gwyndolin because I’m a huge fan of Dark Souls, I’ve always wanted to write in the universe but I’ve never gotten around to making a real project out of it. I even had an original plot angle in mind, something interesting enough I could make a full story out of. I just wrote Gwyndolin because, well, I think he’s a romantic character, hah hah :D Plus, I was pairing him with a human, and we all know how much I love my fantasy interracial.
Anyway, I thought a backstage sneak peek might be interesting :) Let me know what you think! I’ll see you guys when MFG chapter three is complete :D

Doctor Who: Ranking Every Single Companion Departure
https://ift.tt/35el4vd
Graham and Ryan have left Doctor Who, and it was sad/joyous/on telly (delete as applicable), but where do their departures rank on the all-time list?
The question of “Who counts as a companion?” is a tricky one. Overall it’s an ad hoc combination of different criteria, with allowances made for the exceptions that are intended to fulfil the companion role on a one-off basis. The ranking system is based on whether the departure makes sense for that character, how well it’s built up to, and what it says about Doctor Who in a larger sense. The article only covers TV stories because I value what remains of my sanity.
That’s all the exposition. Please enjoy this non-linear history of production compromises.
47. Peri
Peri spends almost her entire time on Doctor Who being miserable, scared and under threat (even Big Finish doing a timey-wimey farce with Peri has abuse as a plot point), but there’s no compassionate release for her. Her mind is erased so her body can host another. She dies scared and alone, and it’s unlikely the Doctor could have saved her. While this is horrible, it could function, very bluntly, as an indictment of the Doctor and his treatment of Peri, but then it is revealed that this didn’t happen.
Peri is instead married with a pink love-heart around the flashback (the Matrix is corny AF apparently). This is because producer John Nathan-Turner changed his mind about killing Peri after they’d filmed her death.
On one hand: yay, someone not dying. On the other: she only goes to a slightly better place, and when companions return from the dead it tends to require some cost to the Doctor. Here, any previous suggestion that the Doctor mistreated his companion is abandoned. Peri’s happy ending, rather than death, is that the Doctor abandons her without explanation and her new husband is an angry warlord who doesn’t seem the type to understand PTSD.
46. Leela
Producer Graeme Williams hoped that Louise Jameson would stay on in the role of Leela, despite Jameson insisting that she was leaving, and so didn’t write the character out. Leela was a warrior, intelligent but steeped in tribal superstition, and the investment in making a potentially problematic character work in her earlier stories gave way to more generic writing, hence Jameson’s departure. At the end of ‘Invasion of Time’ Leela abruptly announces that she wants to marry the Captain of the Time Lords’ Guards.
To borrow a term from critical theory: this is total f****** dogs***.
Jameson was happy for the character to be killed off but instead she ended up married on Gallifrey. We never see her again. It’s a lazy piece of writing; disrespectful to the actress, the character and the viewer.
45. Dodo
Poor Dodo never really stood a chance. Originally intended to be from Sixteenth Century France, producer John Wiles and script editor Donald Tosh remembered that previous historical companions had been deemed unworkable and so another was probably a bad idea. Instead, Dodo started off Cockney until the BBC told the Doctor Who team that she had to speak in Received Pronunciation English.
A happy-go-lucky soul, the production team never warmed to their creation and Dodo is sent away to recover from hypnosis halfway through ‘The War Machines’, and we never see her again. Polly tells the Doctor “she’d like to stay here in London and sends you her love” two episodes after her final appearance.
44. Sergeant Benton & 43. Harry Sullivan
Sergeant Benton and Harry Sullivan appear in ‘The Android Invasion’ as if it’s just another story for them. Benton last appears as an android duplicate and Harry says nothing during the final fight scene. They never appear again. For all of the strengths of early Tom Baker stories, emotional resonance is not one of them.
42. Katarina
Katarina was brought in for the final episode of ‘The Myth Makers’as a replacement for Vicki, and then sacrificed herself in ‘The Dalek Master Plan’. The production team had decided that, as a Trojan handmaiden, Katarina’s ignorance of modern and future technology meant she’d be hard to write for. This makes sense to an extent, except that her death involves her activating an airlock. So we have a production team creating a problem but solving it by suggesting that it wasn’t insurmountable anyway. As the Doctor says at the end of ‘Dalek Master Plan’: “What a waste.”
41. Sara Kingdom
Having killed off Katarina, the production team needed a new companion to fill her role for the rest of ‘The Dalek Master Plan’, so Terry Nation wrote in a Space Security Agent inspired by The Avengers’ Cathy Gale. After killing her own brother, believing him to be a traitor, Sara Kingdom joined the Doctor and Steven’s attempts to stop the Daleks from using the Time Destructor. Ultimately Sara is killed by the device, ageing to death. As the planet around them turns to dust, Sara’s body does likewise and is blown away by the wind.
It’s a horrific fate, to the extent that cuts were made to the sequence. Sara Kingdom was always designed as a short-term companion, and actor Jean Marsh wasn’t interested in joining the show permanently.
Companion deaths aren’t intrinsically a bad idea, it’s just that they can’t be regular, expected events or else the show becomes ‘Come with me for an adventure, you’ll probably die. Yes I’m a psychopath’. They’re usually short-term solutions to mistakes but the momentum of the Doctor’s failures here could have gone somewhere. Instead, the show casually resets itself to the status quo on a flimsy pretext, so these deaths mean little. If Doctor Who doesn’t care about their impact, why should the audience?
40. Liz Shaw
New producer Barry Letts had decided that Liz Shaw was too intelligent to be a Doctor Who companion, and the interpretation most generous to Letts here is that Liz wanted to continue her own work rather than be drafted by UNIT as an assistant. While I hope this was the intention, it’s still a move that implies a reductive take on the role of the companion (that they’re a function rather than a character) and reinforces the paternalism of the Doctor: fatherly, yes, but also dominating and controlling.
39. Polly and Ben
Polly and Ben follow the Doctor into the TARDIS in ‘The War Machines’ and discover at the end of ‘The Faceless Ones’ that they’re back in London just when they left. They ask the Doctor his permission to leave, saying they’ll stay if he needs them. The Doctor is sad to see them go but doesn’t stand in their way, although he does suggest that Ben can go back to the Navy to become an admiral and Polly can… look after Ben.
It’s a pat, patronising little scene that comes and goes suddenly, especially as Polly and Ben haven’t actually been in the story since Episode Two. Polly and Ben leave and the Doctor and Jamie immediately start talking about their next adventure.  The production team had decided the characters weren’t working, and the best you can say is that they were given slightly more ceremony than Dodo.
38. Astrid Peth
The thing about Astrid’s death is that it’s impossible to type ‘She pushes a mugging gold-toothed businessman down a ravine using a fork-lift truck (in slow motion)’ in a way that conveys any sense of pathos. People talk about Andrew Cartmel’s time on Doctor Who influencing Russell T. Davies’ approach, and while they’re wrong (RTD would have written it like that anyway, even if the Cartmel era didn’t exist, but fair play to Cartmel for being on that wavelength) few ever mention ‘Time and the Rani’as an influence. Russell T. Davies’ writing sometimes feels like he’s gleefully trying to combine the tone of Sylvester-McCoy-playing-the-spoons-on-Kate-O’Mara-while-Kate-O’Mara-is-dressed-as-Bonnie-Langford, with the opening ten minutes of Up. Sometimes he actually does it! This was not one of those times.
37. Adric
The Davison companions tend to get good leaving stories that are apparently based on some unbroadcast version of Doctor Who in which they’re completely different people.
So on one hand obviously the death of Adric was a memorable piece of television that affected people deeply on broadcast, but on the other hand it’s a glorified jump-scare. Adric is on board a space freighter about to crash onto prehistoric Earth and cause the extinction of the dinosaurs. He doesn’t know about that last bit, so instead of getting into the escape pod he attempts to solve a logic puzzle that is stopping him from controlling the ship. His bravery in going back to the ship doesn’t achieve anything. In fact if he had succeeded it would have changed history dramatically, so he dooms himself for nothing.
It’s brutal, in comparison with earlier companion deaths the emotional fallout is poorly handled, and it doesn’t pay off anything we’ve seen earlier. Consider Adric’s character up until his final story – a reckless know-it-all who keeps joining the bad guys – and it doesn’t join up with his final story and fate. The initial setup of Adric feeling like an outsider is swiftly resolved rather than used as motivation for his death. There’s no redemption, just a cruel and unlucky moment of bravery for the sake of a semblance of drama.
36. Amy and Rory
Steven Moffat’s first companion departures are not his best work. Initially Amy and Rory broke a trend: companions leaving as they get married off. Only then Moffat wrote a poorly handled pregnancy storyline where the characters’ emotional responses felt implausible, and unlike his softening of the Twelfth Doctor’s character the attempts to address this were bumpy. Then for Amy and Rory’s departure he has River Song, the Doctor’s wife who he rarely meets in chronological order, tell them that he doesn’t like endings and “never let him see you age”.
This reminds you that the Doctor isn’t only manipulative and scheming on an epic scale, and the fact that he tries to convince Amy not to try to go after Rory continues is more in-your-face selfishness (another example of the Seventh Doctor era being on similar wavelengths to the post-2005 show), rather than feeling like a genuine concern for her safety.
Now, I love Doctor Who, I like that the hero is flawed but that they try to be hopeful (and Moffat addresses this successfully elsewhere). The issues with giving the Doctor flaws are whether they’re dealbreakers for people watching, and whether or not they’re deliberately done. This feels like it’s aiming for a commentary on the Doctor but goes too far, and I can understand people finding this hard to watch.
As with many of Moffat’s ideas, just because it didn’t fully work here doesn’t mean it won’t crop up again later.
35. Kamelion
There are a lot of cases of a companion leaving because the production team can’t make them work, but this is a bit on the nose.
Like Adric’s death, Kamelion begging the Doctor to destroy him would have much more impact if it followed through more substantially on previous stories. Unfortunately Kamelion’s character was that of a shape-shifting robot where the robot prop didn’t work, and rather than have him just assume a human guise they simply never wrote him back into the series until his final story. As a result, there’s no real relationship in play when the Doctor grants Kamelion’s wish. On the other hand the robot’s plight is consistent with what little we know of him.
While it’s never fun to watch someone beg for death, it’s more of a testament to Gerald Flood’s acting and Peter Grimwade’s script for ‘Planet of Fire’ that his death scene works.
34. Donna Noble
Everyone remembers the sequence in ‘Journey’s End’ where the companions pilot the TARDIS and drag the Earth back to the right place while “Song for Freedom” builds and Freema Agyeman looks directly at the camera. It’s joyous. It’s huge. It’s wonderful.
The 10 minutes that follow are bleak.
Rose gets her compromised happy ending, then it’s the fate of Donna. She gets given some of the Doctor’s mind, becomes even more brilliant, but then comes the turn: this will kill her. She can’t be this brilliant, she can’t have any more adventures with the Doctor. As she shouts “No” the Doctor wipes her memories of their time together.
33. Lady Christina de Souza
Flying off in a knackered double-decker bus to further adventures is a really good way to go. This would rank higher if it weren’t for the fact that the character is hard to warm to. Unlike Donna Noble’s first appearance in the show, Christina’s role in ‘Planet of the Dead’ doesn’t allow for much pathos or depth, and the character never returned on television to show these. As it is we’re left with a bored member of the aristocracy flying away in some very British iconography, but without the promise of a Barbara Wright figure puncturing their ego.

Doctor Who: how Ace set the template for modern companions

32. Mel
It’s worth stressing that any critique of Mel as a character has to firmly centre on the inadequacy of her creation. She was devised as a computer programmer from Pease Pottage who was into keep-fit, and that’s her entire character. It seems churlish to criticise Bonnie Langford for playing the part as “Bonnie Langford in Doctor Who” because there was nothing else for her to go on.
Mel leaves the series because she decides to travel with Glitz, a mercenary. Does this follow on logically from her character? All we know about Mel is that she’s wholesome and enthusiastic and seems extremely unlikely to go off with a violent intergalactic Del Boy.
However, she gets another leaving scene that would be wonderful if it reflected a recognisable character. We get a sense of the Doctor’s affection for Mel and a series of wonderful melancholy moments: the Doctor shutting the conversation down so he doesn’t have to deal with human emotion, his obvious sadness at another friend leaving because that’s what his life is. Mel’s last line about putting a message in a bottle and throwing it into space (“It’ll reach you. In time”) is brilliant.
This scene bears comparison with Sarah Jane’s leaving scene, specifically because it wasn’t in the original script but the lead actor insisted it be added in its place. It was the scene Sylvester McCoy read when he auditioned for the role.
31. Adam Mitchell
Adam joins at the end of ‘Dalek’ and leaves at the end of ‘The Long Game’, the next story, and has a piece of future technology in his forehead so whenever someone clicks their fingers a little door opens up and you can see his brain.
Yes, in the grand scheme of things this is unfair. Other companions have done stupid things and the Doctor has helped them. The Brigadier flat out murdered people. But Adam was deliberately rubbish and this is reminder that the Ninth Doctor is a damaged man who lashes out. When he says ‘I only take the best’ it seems more like an excuse to get rid of Adam than anything factual, but then the Doctor starts acting like it’s true.
30. Vicki
Vicki left the series because producer John Wiles heard actress Maureen O’Brien complain about her dialogue in ‘Galaxy 4’, so decided to let her go when her contract expired one story later. This led to her being paired off with Troilus at the end of ‘The Myth Makers’, set during the fall of Troy. A late decision requiring rewrites, this is quite an enigmatic fate. We see Vicki fleeing Troy after its fall with Troilus, the Doctor hopeful that she’s safe, but we never see her again. Given the TARDIS’ translation gifts, one imagines she suddenly has to learn Luwian.
29. Nyssa
Nyssa, a scientist/fairy princess mash-up whose entire family and planet was destroyed by the Master (who took over her father’s body) could be a great character. Her innately calm, generous and curious nature contrasted with all the horrors of her past is full of potential, and indeed her choice to stay behind at what is essentially a space leper colony is consistent with this. However, because none of this is ever seriously addressed in the show, the potential pathos of her leaving is greatly reduced. As is often the case we have to make do with a sad leaving scene, where Tegan flat out says to her “You’ll die here” to which she replies “Not easily. Like you I’m indestructible.”
As with Adric’s death, there’s the vague shape of something weighty and dramatic there but without the substance to fill it. John Nathan-Turner hated soaps, but actually using their techniques might have given us a stronger sense of Nyssa and Tegan’s relationship, meaning the audience wasn’t left to fill the gaps.
28. Jackson Lake
Considering during the course of ‘The Next Doctor’ Jackson Lake is in a fugue state, has a breakdown, remembers the death of his wife and the abduction of his child… he seems quite well adjusted by the end of the story. Reunited with his son and suggesting a Christmas dinner honouring the people they’ve lost, Lake seems to be in a better place than the Doctor.
27. Steven Taylor
Steven went through a lot: Wounded in Troy, witnessing the deaths of Katarina, Sara, and the Huguenots of Paris. Initially conceived as a replacement for Ian, meaning he took on most of the action sequences, he leaves in ‘The Savages’ to mediate between two societal factions after a story designed as a more cerebral alternative to biffing. It’s a good place to leave for a character who had stagnated (which, as you can see, happened a lot).
26. Graham and 25. Ryan
Ryan didn’t get killed or converted by Cybermen, so that’s progress. What did happen is that the Doctor accidentally returned to Sheffield ten months late. Yaz is hurt and Ryan returns more comfortably to his old life. Graham is also there.
The returning character of Robertson, an American tycoon with interests in becoming President functions as both a Doctor Who villain and a Donald Trump analogue (in a story universe containing Donald Trump) and this version of Doctor Who isn’t currently capable of dealing with that. Ryan watches Robertson on telly, unpunished by the Doctor and resolves to do something. This is a good reason to go, especially given the concerns of the Chibnall era (at its best focussing on the impact on well-drawn individuals, at its worst expositing over abstractions and sketches).
Graham decides that he will stay with his grandson after Ryan’s sudden announcement. This pays off their development in Series 11, where they had the main character arc of that series.
So far so good, but we also see Graham and Ryan deciding that, actually no, they’re not going to deal with real world problems, just Doctor Who-style adventures instead. It’s a useful microcosm of the era: good ideas present but not followed through on, being not shown Ryan’s reasons for leaving, and not successfully tethering the characters to either the forced whimsy of Doctor Who or the contemporary societal issues it wants to highlight.
And a final issue, which may be resolved: why is this the break-up of The Fam?
This ending doesn’t preclude the Doctor coming back to visit them in any way. In this respect it’s a classic companion departure: practically speaking actors aren’t always free for a cameo or a return visit (for example William Russell wasn’t ultimately available to play Ian Chesterton for ‘Mawdryn Undead’, so the Brigadier was written into the role of a school teacher instead), which means the Doctor not returning for their friends becomes a feature of the character. So while Ryan and Graham are choosing to leave, rather than being drastically and permanently separated, is the Doctor is still making the decision to cut them out of her life?
24. Mickey Smith
Mickey is given, in ‘The Age of Steel’, a proper old-fashioned companion exit, by which I mean some plot points are introduced at the start of his final story and by the end they’ve caused him to leave. Here it’s based on the Doctor and Rose’s behaviour and Mickey’s worth being dismissed until he does something heroic. He’s finally able to say to Rose that she doesn’t need him anymore and move on. Broad brushstrokes stuff in a busy episode, but it continues the idea that the Doctor makes people better that was emphasised from 2005 onwards.
Sure, he does it by being a bit of a prick here but the point stands.
23. The Brigadier
What is the Brigadier’s final story? I’m looking for a story that is written as a final departure, ideally after sustained involvement in the show. For the Brigadier that means ‘Terror of the Zygons’ doesn’t quite work, it wasn’t meant to be his final story (he was unavailable for ‘The Android Invasion’). ‘Battlefield’might have been his final bow, but writer Ben Aaronovitch set up the Brigadier’s death then found he simply couldn’t kill him off. The episode the Brigadier is initially written out of the show in is ‘The Wedding of River Song’ – where the Doctor receives news of his death by phone – and this is swiftly retconned with the divisive Cyber-Brig from ‘Death in Heaven’.
These two were written after Nicholas Courtney’s death, and the first one is used for dramatic weight but is over with too quickly. The latter does show the Brigadier, even in death and converted, saving the life of his daughter and helping the Doctor before going on to possibly eternal life – as seems right and proper – but as it involves the Brigadier’s buried body being reanimated there’s an invasive element connected to a beloved figure. As with many of Steven Moffat’s ideas, just because it didn’t fully work here doesn’t mean it won’t crop up again later.
22. Turlough
Peter Grimwade deserves credit again. Given the job of writing out Turlough, Kamelion and potentially the Master while also writing in the new companion Peri, Grimwade actually makes the brief for ‘Planet of Fire’ work. Here Turlough realises early on that his home planet is involved, and by involving his family Grimwade makes the stakes personal. Turlough also gets to use his brains here, rather than just wander around with a gun looking scared.
Turlough’s departure is developed through this story, and the farewell scene is a low-key goodbye as he admits that travelling with the Doctor has made him a better person. Again, it doesn’t follow from previous episodes, as Turlough isn’t developed as a character after ‘Enlightenment’, but in the context of this story it works well.
21. Mike Yates
An example of Barry Letts and script editor Terrance Dicks addressing how being a regular Doctor Who character might make you feel, Captain Mike Yates is shaken by his hypnosis when undercover at a petrochemical company and becomes concerned about the environment. He falls in with a plot to reduce overpopulation and restore Earth to a golden age by time scooping dinosaurs into central London, because Doctor Who, and is discharged from UNIT. He goes to a meditation centre to recover, and uncovers a sinister plot – because Doctor Who– and ultimately gets better. Yates gets an arc and closure, especially in comparison to his fellow UNIT soldiers.
20. Nardole
Nardole, chiefly a comic relief character with moments of depth, is entrusted with the task of evading the Cybermen for as long as possible while keeping a group of humans alive (a continuation from his assigned role of monitoring the Doctor). It seems likely they will eventually fall, and though this is de-emphasised to stop an already tragic episode from overloading, it’s quietly harrowing. Adric’s death shook up the children watching, Nardole’s affects the parents: the feeling of being a guardian to children in an uncertain, dangerous world is all too familiar right now.
19. Sarah Jane Smith
Sarah Jane’s departure in ‘The Hand of Fear’(written by Bob Baker and Dave Martin) comes out of the blue. An early outline for the story involved the Brigadier’s death, sacrificing himself to save the world. This was lost in development, and the story delayed while it was simplified. In the meantime Elisabeth Sladen asked to leave and for Sarah not to be the focus, married or killed off. Sarah was going to be killed off though, in a story called ‘The Lost Legion’. Script Editor Robert Holmes disliked the story, so a simplified version of ‘The Hand of Fear’returned to replace it with Holmes writing Sarah’s leaving scene. This was rewritten by Sladen and Tom Baker, with Holmes unavailable to do further rewrites. This is why Sarah’s departure is sudden. There’s no huge focus on her and then unrelated to the rest of the story the Doctor receives a summons to Gallifey where humans are not allowed (and given what happened last time he went he probably doesn’t want to take Sarah). What the scene does have is a strong sense of the unsaid to it, a sense of wistfulness akin to seeing someone else living in your childhood home.

10 Doctor Who companions that might have been
By Alex Westthorp
18. Wilf
Essentially, if Bernard Cribbins is crying then I’m going to cry. It’s Bernard Cribbins, for god’s sake. He’s so lovable its actually weaponised against the audience, and while ‘The End of Time’ might not be to everyone’s tastes, Cribbins makes every scene he’s in work, so you’re thoroughly invested in Wilf and his responses. However, this is harks back to Susan’s departure. It’s undeniably moving that the Doctor is making this man cry with happiness… after lying to him (no mention of the safeguards he put in Donna’s mind, or that Donna didn’t want her memories wiped anyway) and who he emphasises is “not remotely important” before saying it would “be my honour” to save him. It’s said of the Doctor “words are his weapons” in ‘Hell Bent’, and the pattern emerging here is that they’re weapons he uses on his friends; when the Doctor says “I only take the best” this is not only another weapon, it’s asking the question: the best for what?
17. Bill Potts
Potentially eternal life you say? A walking dead person? Maybe keep the dead body aspect of it and this idea has legs. Bill follows the Brigadier in becoming a Cyberman, and Clara in returning from the dead to travel the universe. The images of Cyber-Bill carrying the Doctor, the reaffirmation of who Bill is, the arrival of Heather: all of these are great.
Steven Moffat was right that the show hadn’t been diverse enough in its casting, but presumably no one behind the scenes understood that there are unintended connotations to a white man telling a black woman that she can’t be angry if she wants to be accepted – as happens to Bill in ‘The Doctor Falls’ – or that Clara got a gore-free death compared to the lingering shots of Bill’s gunshot wound. There’s also ambiguity in ‘Twice Upon a Time’as to when Bill dies – in that episode she is represented by an avatar taken from a moment near death, but given everything that’s happened to Bill this could be tomorrow or in a million years’ time – so overall this one has some extreme highs and lows.
16. Romana and K9
After Mary Tamm left the show, feeling similarly to Louise Jameson that despite a strong start her character was reverting to the stock companion figure (a damsel in distress, tripping ankles, screaming for help to advance the plot that’s being explained to them) Romana regenerated with Lalla Ward taking over the role. Ward left the show as new producer John Nathan-Turner came on board, and while Romana’s departure was foreshadowed well in advance, Nathan-Turner didn’t want any soap opera elements creeping into Doctor Who, and so Romana’s farewell scene was understated and rushed against Ward’s wishes. Otherwise it’s a good exit for Romana, who refuses a summons to Gallifrey and, finding herself in another dimension, decides to go off on her own journey after her travels with the Doctor.
K9 goes with her because John Nathan-Turner hated K9. Compared to ‘School Reunion’ this is just completely dismissive, but there is at least a coda: another scene at the end of ‘Warriors’ Gate’ where K9 and Romana face their future together with optimism, and Adric asks the Doctor if Romana will be alright: “Alright? She’ll be superb.”
15. Susan Foreman
The first companion departure, and something of a template. Susan falls in love and stays behind. Actress Carole Ann Ford left as she was unsatisfied by Susan’s lack of development.
It’s the Doctor’s decision to leave Susan, his granddaughter, behind. He locks the doors on her, believing that she stands a better chance of happiness staying on Earth rebuilding after a Dalek invasion. William Hartnell didn’t want Ford to leave and channels that into his performance. A clip of this scene was used to represent Hartnell at the beginning of the twentieth anniversary special ‘The Five Doctors’, and with Susan’s fate unconfirmed after The Time War his line ‘One day I shall come back’ lands even heavier: we know he never did.
No wonder he never comes back for anybody else.
14. Captain Jack
‘The Parting of the Ways’ is Jack’s departure story as it’s his last as a regular companion before moving to Torchwood.
Torchwood was not announced until after Series 1 of Doctor Who, and so when it became clear that Jack – with his cheesy grin and action hero posturing – was going to die, it was unexpected. There’s a sense of inevitability about the Daleks killing him when everyone else is dead but, because this was a new series, it was never clear how far it would go. Maybe there’d be a last-minute reprieve. Ultimately there was, but as far as self-contained character arcs go Jack’s journey from con-man to sacrificial hero works, and if it had ended there, it’d have been on a high.
13. Adelaide Brooke
In Base Under Siege stories we have the stock character of a distrusting commander who doesn’t get along with the Doctor. A fun idea in ‘The Waters of Mars’ is ‘Hey, what if they were the companion for one episode?’
One of the less fun but still powerful ideas is also that the Doctor’s behaviour be so unnerving that this stock character would kill themselves in response. So here we have someone standing up to the Doctor as he states the laws of time “are mine, and they will obey me!” What’s interesting is that this is not dissimilar to the standard companion departure, but operating in the epic register rather than a more intimate one. The Doctor has previous on saying that companions have to leave and not giving them a choice, but here the controlling behaviour is scaled upwards to time itself. Possibly the show was not ready to explore this explicitly in a smaller scale just yet.
12. Grace Holloway
Sneaking in unnoticed is the fact that Grace Holloway, the one-off companion for the 1996 TV Movie, ends the film by kissing the Doctor at midnight under the fireworks but refusing to go with him because her experiences have given her renewed self-confidence. Grace is that rarest of things – a Doctor Who companion who gets to leave on her own terms without the Doctor being a dick about it.
11. Ian Chesterton
Ian and Barbara are the first humans in Doctor Who to explore the universe in the TARDIS, taken away by force when the Doctor kidnaps them. Initially they want to return home, but this desire fades. However, when they’re presented with a chance they take it. As a contrast to Susan’s departure, Ian and Barbara’s departure is joyful as it turns out that you cantravel with the Doctor and leave on your own terms as richer, fuller people.
10. Rose Tyler
Rose and the Doctor. The Doctor and Rose. It’s easy to lose track – amidst the melodrama, epic gestures and various tensions – of the way Series 2 sets up Rose and the Doctor being torn apart almost straight away. They’re so wrapped up in how much fun they’re having that it stops them from noticing other people’s feelings. It becomes clear that had the Doctor and Rose done this, the Torchwood Institute wouldn’t exist, so Harriet Jones wouldn’t have had a weapon to fire at the Sycorax in the preceding Christmas episode. However, the show is also telling you that Rose and the Doctor being split up is a colossal tragedy; performances, visuals and music tell you this is incredibly sad while the stories are reminding you they’ve contributed to their own downfall.
This is a companion departure with the heartbreak turned up to 11, to the point where the pretty loud “Brought this on themselves” track can get lost in the mix. Here’s the beginnings of companions burning out rather than fading away.
There’s also the unfortunate business where Rose Tyler, the beloved character who helped bring Doctor Who back as a critical and popular success, rips holes in the universe to find the man she loves.
Said man takes her back to the place she had the worst time of her life, gives her a genocidal sex clone and then quietly leaves when she’s making out with it.
9. Ace
Bearing in mind that Ace has left Doctor Who in so many different canons over the years, it’s specifically her departure in ‘Survival’ that I’m taking as her final story. I’m heavily indebted to Una McCormack’s book on ‘The Curse of Fenric’ here, as it makes the very good point that for everything that could happen to Ace – whatever fates spin-off media has in store for her – there’s nothing quite as perfect for where Ace has reached at the end of Season 26 as the promise of further adventures, the possibility of joy rather than darkness, an ellipsis rather than a full stop.
8. Barbara
Why is Barbara’s departure better than Ian’s? Because:
In ‘An Unearthly Child’ the Doctor asks them “What is going to happen to you?”, the single most important question in the entire series. Firstly because that is half the format of Doctor Who, and secondly because the other half is the same question in reverse. If Barbara Wright doesn’t happen to Doctor Who, then Doctor Who is a short lived 1960s sci-fi show about a cantankerous old git who kidnapped some school teachers (Missing presumed wiped).
7. Zoe and 6. Jamie
Zoe and Jamie both leave suddenly at the end of ‘The War Games’. Patrick Troughton was leaving and the actors decided to go with him, and that sense of an era ending bled into the fiction.
At the end of ‘The War Games’ the Time Lords are named and appear for the first time, represented by a group of solemn men in robes who wield immense and ineffable power. The Doctor is put on trial for stealing the TARDIS and interfering on other worlds. His companions are returned to a time after their first meeting with the Doctor, their memories of their travels erased. This isn’t built up to, but there’s a general sense of unease in the final few episodes and the Time Lords seem aloof enough to mete out this sort of punishment.
Jamie and Zoe try to escape with the Doctor, but when they’re recaptured he gives up. With Patrick Troughton’s Doctor this is especially shocking, and it’s only his melancholy resignation that convinces them to give up too. Zoe ends up back on a space station, and knows there’s something she can’t quite remember, but with Jamie – who has been with the Second Doctor for almost the entire incarnation – he ends up back at the aftermath of Culloden, charging a redcoat. In a kind touch, the redcoat turns and flees, suggesting Jamie might be alright in the aftermath of the battle.
Doctor Who wasn’t really huge on tearjerkers until 2005, but it was very, very good at quiet melancholy.
5. Martha Jones
Martha is in love with the Doctor. The Doctor spends the entire series pining for Rose and being oblivious to this fact.
Martha Jones puts up with a lot, looking after the Doctor while in his human John Smith guise and having to restrain herself while being continually patronised, racially abused and treated like an idiot. She then spends a year travelling the Earth avoiding capture as the Master enslaves and murders the population, holding Martha’s family captive while she does this.
So frankly when Martha says she’s leaving and the Doctor still doesn’t understand why (“Is this going anywhere?”) it’s hugely cathartic for the audience and for someone who deserved better. Some people do get to choose when being with the Doctor stops, and it’s usually great when they do.
4. Jo Grant
However muddled the reasoning behind Jo Grant’s existence, the casting was inspired. Essentially a remix of Jamie (which suggests that Jo and Liz could have worked if Jamie and Zoe did), Jo Grant wasn’t the brightest but wasn’t stupid, and was incredibly loyal and brave.
With the Doctor’s paternal streak fully activated, the production team decided that Jo falling in love and telling the Doctor “he reminds me of a sort of younger you” would be exactly what the Doctor didn’t want to hear. In contrast to Victoria’s departure and the Doctor’s selflessness there, the Doctor doesn’t do what Mike Yates does when marriage is announced (looks upset and does his best to mask it) but instead quietly slips out and drives away by himself. The fact that he leaves in a way that suggests jealousy or loneliness is a huge change; now we see the Doctor closer to Susan’s position and he does not like it.
3. Tegan
Coming at the end of ‘Resurrection of the Daleks’, where she’s seen a lot of people killed and the Doctor pick up a gun and announce that he’s going to kill Davros (who Tegan presumably hasn’t heard of), Tegan’s leaving scene is very close to being perfect.
Firstly there’s the line “It’s stopped being fun”, which begs the question of when it started being fun for her, but that’s ignorable. Secondly, and this is more about personal taste than an inconsistency in characterisation, there’s a case to be made for Less is More here. Tegan runs from the Doctor and Turlough as he begs her not to leave “like this”, which causes the Doctor to consider his actions before he and Turlough leave in the TARDIS. As it’s dematerialising, Tegan runs back in has one final line. For me it’s just a line too far, and Tegan being unable to say anything at all would have been more powerful, especially for the self-described “mouth on legs”.
However, that’s more window dressing rather than substance: the reasons for Tegan leaving are excellent: it’s a commentary on the stories and Doctor we’ve seen recently, and a plausible emotional response to them. It sets the Doctor on his way to ‘The Caves of Androzani’ where the show comes even closer than ever to paying off a sustained period of grimdark storytelling. Adric’s death might be more famous, but Tegan’s departure is much better writing from Eric Saward and deserves more plaudits for it.
2. Victoria
Actor Deborah Watling wanted to leave, and so Victoria goes in ‘Fury from the Deep’. Here the character has a plausible response to screaming at monsters and getting into trouble: she leaves. She says that she’s having a miserable time screaming and getting into trouble, but isn’t sure if she can go: her father died saving the Doctor, she’s an orphan out of her own time. The Doctor intervenes and suggests a family she can stay with.
Most importantly, the Doctor and Jamie stay an extra day to give her time to think it over, and the Doctor stresses that it must be her decision. On top of this, the final scene of the episode is the Doctor quietly trying to make Jamie feel better about her leaving. Rather than the usual one scene and gone deal we have something drawn out, stemming from character, full of warmth and empathy.
1. Clara Oswald
Potentially eternal life you say? A walking dead person? Maybe lose the dead body aspect of it and this idea has legs. ‘Hell Bent’ is a divisive episode (referential meta-commentary on Doctor Who isn’t what everyone was looking for from a season finale) and the ideas in it are incredibly pointed: the grieving Doctor overthrows Rassilon, shooting a potential ally to retrieve Clara from a moment before her death, and tries to wipe her mind to save her life, addressing the long-term trends of companion departures head on.
Rather than a Gallifreyan epic, this is focussed on one relationship and the shade it casts on the Doctor’s behaviour, all the while dancing in and around threads from other plotlines. The Doctor wanted Gallifrey back so badly, but now it’s simply a means to an end for him to bring Clara back.
cnx.cmd.push(function() { cnx({ playerId: "106e33c0-3911-473c-b599-b1426db57530", }).render("0270c398a82f44f49c23c16122516796"); });
Clara’s final story is often compared to Donna’s departure because of the mindwipe element and the idea of Clara being a Doctor-like figure in her own right – here realised rather than excised – but looking at this list you can see how it harks back all the way to Susan: the Doctor thinks he knows what is best and often gets it wrong, and what seems like extreme behaviour in this story is actually pretty standard. Here he gets properly called out on this behaviour, the show finally able to address this in an intimate rather than epic setting.

Hola .
Aquí veremos unas predicciones mías de .
Super Smash Bros Ultimate .
Coincidencia?? .
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=ANZVMwou4g8 .
Y aún tenemos a Dante y Lloyd .
Yo según yo el sexto dlc es: .
Crash Bandicoot o Doom Slayer .
Según yo diría que es Crash Bandicoot ya que según uno había filtrado a Byleth y otras cosas .
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=ihw7CUxJTCc&t=53s .
Mii Gunner: Banjo Kazooie y Joker .
Mii Espadachín: Heroe y Byleth .
Son dos y dos .
Y con el Fighter Pass 2 .
Mii Peleador: Crash Bandicoot y Sub Zero .
Mii Gunner: Doom Slayer y Arle .
Mii Espadachín: Lloyd Irving y Dante .
Dos y dos .
Coincidencia?? .

Could you please list out the various au!ideas you have at some point? I really want to find a certain one every now and then but then have trouble remembering what you called it
You asked for this…
An incomplete AU Master List for Sanjuno’s Ficwork:
1.    ATTACK ON TITAN
1.1.  Coordinates T by H: Eren’s coordinatorabilities allow him to metaphysically bond with other humans, thereby givingeveryone in the group the ability to psychically communicate with the rest andalso boosting everyone’s healing ability exponentially to be on par with theTitan Shifters. Chaptered, WIP
2.    BLEACH
2.1. What Happens on Vacation: Crossoverwith YYH – turns out that Kurosaki Misaki was a senior ferry girl on sabbatical(which translates as living a mortal life unaware of her true nature) and shewas late returning to work due to being trapped in Grand Fishers gut. Ichigoand Uryuu are very confused when their “cousin” Kazuma shows up to introducehis new bride to the family. Koenma is just really pissed off by all the paperworkhe needs to deal with while cleaning up his father’s mismanaged pet project. WIP
3.    CODEGEASS
3.1.  A Code of Ice and Fire: Crossover withGOT – Lelouch, his two younger siblings, and Lelouch’s most loyal followers arereincarnated into Westeros. Then CCshows up with dragons and Ned Stark starts to think that maybe Robert’s ontosomething with the “drinking to forget” idea. Meta
3.2.  Abandon Thyself: Post-Zero RequiemSuzaku travels back in time to the scene in the Shinjuku Ghettos when the truckexplodes. Given that the people closest to him haven’t actually spoken to Suzakuin years, the origins of Suzaku’s obvious mental instability is hilariouslymisattributed by various outside PoVs. So when Suzaku hits his knees in frontof Lelouch, swearing eternal devotion and vowing to make Lelouch the next emperornobody panics. (They should really reconsider panicking.) Drabbles, WIP
3.3.  The Sun Also Rises: At the moment ofhis death in the Zero Requiem, Lelouch travels back in time to his childhoodbody. With only a week to go before Marianne is “assassinated by terrorists”Lelouch sets out to rearrange the board in a way none of the other players willsee coming until it’s far too late. Lelouch has been given a second chance tomake things right, and Lelouch wouldn’t be Lelouch if he didn’t plan big. Thistime around, Lelouch plans for his victory to be a bit more obvious. Chaptered, WIP
4.    DCU
4.1.  Time Enough: Terry McGinnis, his littlebrother Matt, and their dogs are the only members of their timeline to survivebecause Bruce Wayne was too old to see any more of his sons die in front of him.So they all got knocked out, shoved into an escape capsule, and ejected fromthe Batman Beyond timeline before it crumbles. Said time pod crashes into themiddle of a Red Hood versus Match throw down, and Terry’s Wayne-inheritedcharisma is so powerful it allows him to banter his way into good graces ofboth villains. Jason drags them all off to his lair because every single memberof the Batfam hoards orphans. Chaptered, WIP

Henrietta isprobably far too gleeful over making her best friend her Spymaster, but it’snot like anyone knows enough about what they’re doing to stop her. 8.1.  A Dirge of Ice and Fire: Crossover withGOT – Several members of Avalanche and the Elite Soldiers are reincarnated asthe spares and bastards of Westeros’ Great Houses. Given that Rhaenys Targaryenused to be Cid Highwind, the Sack of King’s Landing goes very differently. Meta
8.2.  A Feather’s Weight: Crossover withNaruto – Kakashi and Obito, along with their respective subordinates, arereincarnated in Wutai, and are thus in position to undermine a lot of Hojo’splans simply by being themselves. Wutai still loses, but by a much smallermargin, and SHIN-RA realizes much too late that Wutai’s “concession” was atrap. Kakashi is a big shiny distraction for Sephiroth, the SOLDIERS revolt, and nobody knows who assassinated President Shinra. WIP
8.3.  Antiviral: Woden and Gaia conspire tocreate antibodies to fight off Jenova’s infection. Oneshot- Complete

Avalanche proceeds to moseyalong and wreak havoc in the way only they can manage.
8.8.  To Earn the Sky: Echidna, Mother ofMonsters and Heroes, and Jenova, the Calamity From the Skies, are at war. Hojomakes a very big mistake when he uses the Blood of Echidna’s Children in hisRevenant Project. Cid Highwind is a good son, and his Mother wants to meet hernew Grandchildren.

Ned, fully believing that this is his punishmentfor failing his family and best friend the first time around, decides to fixthe Realm by fulfilling the Pact of Fire and Ice. The thing about being a womanis that no one ever expects you to be a threat, not even other women. The other Box Animals think it’s a great idea and do thesame with their humans, and this results in the kind of alternate timeline thatgives Byakuran a headache. In other words, Uri creates a timeline where FlameActives are a lot more Alien than they used to be and now everyone thinksYoukai and other myths are real. Chapters,WIP

19. MARVEL
19.1.              AnAssemblage of Ice and Fire: Crossover with GOT – Team Iron Man focus, sinceTony is reincarnated as Ned Stark. Starks are made of Iron, and Winter iscoming. Tony’s genius intellect, knowledge of politics and economics, experience with magic and alternate realities, and the fact that Extremiscarried over through his reincarnation and adapted to work with First Man magicmeans that the Stark siblings who go to the Tourney of Harrenhal are nothinglike the canon versions. 20.1.              AFeather’s Weight: Crossover with FFVII – Kakashi and Obito, along withtheir respective subordinates, are reincarnated in Wutai, and are thus inposition to undermine a lot of Hojo’s plans simply by being themselves. Wutaistill loses, but by a much smaller margin, and SHIN-RA realizes much too latethat Wutai’s “concession” was a trap. Kakashi is a big shiny distraction forSephiroth, the SOLDIERS revolt, and nobody knows who assassinated PresidentShinra. WIP

20.3.              AWidening Gyre: Rin survives the Chidori and her existence is now an S-classsecret. Said S-class secret distracts Obito on his way to ambush Kushina’slabour and several different chase scenes take place. They all end up in theROOT base made from one of Tobirama’s old labs and instead of Kyuubi gettingloose Team Ro, the Fourth Hokage’s team of bodyguards, Obito, Anko, and all ofROOT plus Danzo himself get dumped into the Warring Clans Era. Obito killsDanzo in a panic when he realizes that taking the Bijuu means killing Rin,Kakashi sacrifices himself again, and there is a lot more running around. Kakashisuborns ROOT en masse, Obito is stupidly overpowered and homicidal but it’sokay because Kakashi is playing damsel in distress and distracting him. TheSenju and the Uchiha are all really confused by these kids, there are far toomany mistaken identities, and Konoha gets founded much earlier than in canon. Meta

Love can be killed, but it never dies, onlyever taking on new shapes as we move on with our lives. Drabbles, WIP
20.7.              Heavy asthe Mountain: Team 7 is loosing the fight against Kaguya, but Obito andKakashi perform a last minute sacrifice that means the kids survive. It alsocauses them all to be de-aged by over a decade and thrown back in time to theWarring Clans Era. Kakashi and Obito die, Team 7 gets adopted bypresumably-Hatake Kanna, then a few years later they run into Uchiha Izuna andit all descends into chaos. (Team 7 takes total advantage of everything to gettheir revenge on Zetsu and maybe fix some of Konoha’s longstanding issues at thesame time.) WIP

20.8.1. O-Bon Appetite: Thanks to his dancetraining Izuna manages the core control to dodge Tobirama’s sword enough toavoid a fatal wound and Konoha starts off on more equal footing. Tobirama thenwalks into a traditional Uchiha celebration and his brain shuts off.
20.8.2. Hot Like Burning: Kushina drags Minatoto the Uchiha Police Office Party so she can make time with Mikoto and there isso much skin, Minato was not emotionally prepared for this. Fugaku takesadvantage of the Yondaime’s weakness as only an Uchiha can and the glorious‘ship FuMiKuMi sets sail.

20.9.              Karma,and the Repercussions Thereof: Crossover with KHR – Legendary Ninjafrom the Elemental Countries get reincarnated into KHR and proceed to adopt allthe Magic Rainbow Fire Children. Nono and Iemitsu suffer.
20.9.1. Karmic Balance: Kakashi and Obito areninja married from the very start because of metaphysical bonding and someminor haunting during their last lives. Between Ninshu Shinobi needing to be inClans and Flame Actives needing to be in Harmonies it does not take long beforethe child stealing begins. 20.10.          Look theInnocent Flower: Orochimaru gets the Hat instead of Minato because insteadof working for Danzo he creates his Baby-no-Jutsu (the same one that producedRogu and Mitsuki) and that’s how Orochimaru accidently turns Tenzo into theOrochimaru-and-Tsunade lovechild while field testing some gene-splicingadoption techniques. Sarutobi is so delighted by all the babies he namesOrochimaru his successor without any further debate. Konoha proceeds to becomea somewhat androgynous, gender-fluid utopia full off affectionate, friendlypeople who only want you for your body. Orochimaru refuses to allow hypocrisyin his Konoha and loyalty to ones comrades is not only encouraged, it’senforced. Meta
20.11.          Negotiationis an Artform: Remix of The Art of Negotiation by Kage88 – Konoha’sFounders take a trip to Uzushio and the Uzumaki are annoyingly persistent intheir attentions, even when said attentions are unwanted. Tobirama’s politicalsavvy is not to be underestimated, and Tobirama’s just as ridiculouslyoverprotective of his loved ones as his relatives are of him. Bitchy piningresolves into dating, and the only reason Tobirama lets Hashirama get away withbetting on his love life is because Hashirama was the only one who had faith inTobirama making the first move. Things spiralfrom there. WIP
20.14.          That WeAnswer to Our Stars: Crossover with SW – Kaguya’s reality warp has somestrange side effects to the point of ridiculousness. The Uchiha proceed to seduce the Jedi and foil all ofPalpatine’s plans for galactic domination. Meta
20.15.          The ThinLine: Kakashi loses patience with the Sandaime when no appreciable actionis taken to remove Danzo from power even after Kakashi literally reports toSarutobi’s face that he was ordered by Danzo to assassinate the Third Hokage. So Kakashi crashes an Uchiha Clan meeting and asks them to run away with himand his cute little brothers to a lovely tropical Island. 20.17.4.               Come Away:Zetsu is targeting Obito in another attempt to create the Rinnegan. Kakashi hashis first “near death” experience and Obito is not amused at all. Neither isRin. Team 7 is overprotective and codependent regardless of the generation inquestion.
20.17.5.               Quoth theRaven: Danzo’s schemes got him chased out of Konoha to escape execution, and he invades during the Chunin Exams in order to get his revenge. SummoningTobirama using the Edo Tensai was probably not the best plan.
20.18.          TsukumogamiNo Kankurou: While he is still very young, Kankurou signs a Summonscontract with the Tsukumogami (aka the Muppet Theater Troupe) and then proceedsto interrupt Yashamaru’s “attack” on Gaara while simultaneously wreaking havocacross the entirety of Sunagakure. My upbringing was starkly black and white, everything strictly categorised as sin and acceptable, allowed and not. The massive ‘sin: not allowed’ category swallowed everything in legalism and immutable consequences. I fell in love with noir partly because it has no such hangups.
I savoured noir’s evocative language and sexual undercurrent. I learned to believe exposing repressive authority and dirty deeds was valiant even if ultimately futile, and justice could be delivered even when corrupt systems stymied it. The hardboiled detective attracted me from every angle, and I dreamed of both being and fucking the daring mystery-solving, smoking, drinking, dame-bedding wiseass. The detective archetype is dangerously appealing; stalwart antiheroes holding to their personal code while all around them people sold their souls for a bottle of scotch, a land deed, a tempting woman or a hard man. Terribly tragic, and as such, terribly romantic.
Like a suspect in a smoky dive bar, what constitutes ‘loyalty’ in noir is hard to pin down, but while most supporting characters treat loyalty as a purchasable, expendable, flexible commodity, [anti]heroes Spade and Archer, Gittes and Dewitt, Mars and Hammer, et al. hold fiercely to their personal definitions thereof. These ideals often keep them from working with a partner, as they can’t find others who share their notions longer than a book’s opening chapters, a film’s first act. Sometimes, in a twisted blessing, their partner gets murdered before committing betrayal. (‘Committing betrayal.’ What a cruel grammatical construction.)
Fairly unique among their set, Charleses Nick and Nora manage loyalty and happiness to and with each other, but not only does their teasing openly relay insecurities in everyone outside their connubial circle, their origin story is shot through with loyalty conundrums. The crux of The Thin Man revolves around characters leveraging Nick’s allegiance to an old friend to make Nick and Nora investigate a suspicious death/disappearance, similar to the relationship between Marlowe and Terry Lennox in The Long Goodbye.
Marlowe: You didn’t have much choice, huh? So you used me. Lennox: Hell, that’s what friends are for.
Many noir tales examine murder, corruption, lost love, incest, power, grasping for companionship in sex and booze and partners. Few are so nakedly about friendship, loyalty, and the unique betrayal they set you up for as The Long Goodbye. As the game Lennox and Marlowe play in their first scene tells us, all Marlowe’s relationships are games of liar’s poker he’ll lose. The only question is: sooner, or later?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The film’s opening involves the great Philip Marlowe cajoling his hungry cat to eat first a concoction of cottage cheese and raw egg, then generic cat food. The two mewl, mumble and scratch in their understanding standoff. The film ends with Marlowe coolly justifying shooting his once-friend because Lennox indirectly killed the cat. Everything between is a meditation on loyalty.
As best exemplified in Nick and Nora Charles, noir understands relationships featuring fidelity and comfortable insults are the ones which really matter, so the snarky–sweet caring–codependent way Marlowe and hungry cat banter intentionally evokes true friendship. Altman called that opener important and Marlowe’s relation to his cat commentary on friendship: no matter how hectic his life, Marlowe is concerned the cat eats, whether the cops scare him, if he’s lost in LA’s mean streets.
Like most of his genre, Marlowe is destined to traverse the criminal underworld, continually learning the hard way he’s more loyal to friends, clients, even his constantly stoned neighbours, than they to him. He can’t bring himself to act on his cynicism until he’s burnt, and is a lost soul not because he’s dumb or drugged – he turns down even his neighbours’ hash brownie – but because he can’t find anywhere to put his trust.
Though they harass him and he blusters against their threats and handcuffs, Marlowe’s relationship with the cops is his most stable. He despises their work, they hate and stymie him, but at least he knows where he stands. Everywhere else is shifting sand and empty promises, golden and glittering by daylight, cold and dangerous at night. Under it all play morphing renditions of “The Long Goodbye,” refrains evolving and fading as quickly as relationships, adding atmosphere as Los Angeles underworld characters succour the detective and each other until betrayal becomes convenient.
As he searches for answers in mysteries and others, Marlow smokes to dull the pain – take a shot every time he strikes his match on a new surface, you’ll be drunk before the halfway point. Elliot Gould’s physicality superbly conveys Marlowe’s hurt and insecurity, shambling gait literalising existentially unsure footing.
Tumblr media
Altman’s shots and Zsigmond’s cinematography also expose Marlowe’s mental state. The beautiful police station tracking shot puts us in Marlowe’s gumshoes, showing his strain as he attempts to sort through the mountain of information, theories, and grief he’s been buried under. The long dolly across the grounds of the clinic has a similar effect, moving first methodically, then more frenetically as Marlowe’s frustration builds. Exposition of addresses and phone numbers unroll with slow camera movements over long takes, revelling in the acting’s stillness, taking a less usual route than montages to make the viewer feel Marlowe’s tedium and loneliness.
The odyssey is wrapped in perfectly exposed beach scenes, daytime sands yellow-tinged and California to their core, nighttime painted deep blacks and grainy red with Eileen’s dress the only spot of yellow. Doubled imagery and symbols of duplicity abound, the most striking of which involve the beach. First we see Marlowe in the glare off Wades’s window, projected between quarrelling lovers as they snipe at each other. Later, in the same window, Eileen is shown two-faced as she and Marlowe talk while her husband charges suicidally into the inky sea.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The whole film is a gorgeous depiction of our ugliest impulses, and Altman is the perfect director for it. Through various lenses and genres, Altman’s work examines intimacy and pain which can be leveraged by only those closest to us. Noir’s peripheral characters are who many of Altman’s other films center: desperate, impotent men; disloyal lovers; marriages on the verge; frustrated humans performing drastic acts. The Long Goodbye digs into side stories many noirs don’t unless impacting the protagonist directly: Farewell, My Lovely is more concerned with Marlowe’s relationship to the women in his path than the women themselves; American Gigolo hardly contains a conversation Julian Kaye isn’t in; Evelyns relationships in Chinatown mostly evolve when Jake is around to observe, and he’s around almost every frame. Some of The Long Goodbye’s more virulent events or breakdowns happen while Marlowe is out of the picture, or listening to nothing but crashing waves.

Altman is interested in examining these stories for their own sake, and shows it by examining side characters with the reflections motif, too. Zsigmond uses Eileen’s windshield brilliantly to reflect her facade as Marlowe chases her through the streets. The stoned hippy neighbours are introduced surrounded by floor-to-ceiling windows, one dancing with herself in the mirrored glass. The gate-guard-slash-impression-artist is reflected in Harry’s shiny car sidepanels, a symbol of security who pretends to be many other people, then shows himself more trustworthy than people pretending to be someone they’re not.
The guard also displays The Long Goodbye’s wicked sense of humour, along with the horny lookout whose ogling of stoned half-naked neighbour women allows Marlowe to sneak away. There’s the slapstick of Harry swinging haplessly on the gate trying clamber over as he imagines a detective should. Marlowe plants a sloppy handprint on the interrogation cell two-way mirror, then paints his face with fingerprint ink, cops impotent to stop his clowning. The guard dog fetching her owner’s stick from the waves has a twisted hilarity to it.
Which brings us, as the film continually does, back to loyalty. Relationships with animals are throughout: besides his cat, Marlowe nervously banters with the guard dog and talks as cheerfully as a damned man can to strays lying in the road. Ultimately animals’ loyalty – even only to the hand that feeds and then betrays them, pictured perfectly with mounted ducks – is still stronger than that of everyone else in his life, and loyalty is important to him.

If only I’d recognised earlier how much my identifying with pulp heroes was due to my own sense of loyalty, deservedness of recipients be damned. “Their cynicism exactly stems from their compassion, [their] hardness is a scar tissue of a heart they can’t stop the world from breaking over and over.” I weirdly admired Marlowe hoping against hope, believing those he loves once, then again. You know what they say about fools.
Marlowe: Nobody cares but me. Lennox: Well that’s you, Marlowe. You’ll never learn, you’re a born loser.
The Long Goodbye is Chandler’s most personal work. “You writers have your own special way of describing, don’t you?” is the movie acknowledging this sure as Chandler’s book commented on his deep insecurities, ideals, and philosophies. (The film references the book many times, including the face-bandaged man as a nod to Book Terry’s extensive plastic surgery.) Roger Ebert said in his original review, “The private eye as a fiction device was essentially a way to open doors; the best novels of Chandler and the others are simply hooks for a cynical morality.” Like Inherent Vice, the criminal underworld is alluring backdrop and murder the smaller mystery behind the real question of whether the detective can uphold his personal code in a world where ‘a man is only as good as his word’ simply means most men are no good. The real question, the crux and heart of the matter, is Will they keep clinging to that code? Why do we keep falling for those who throw us over?
Tumblr media
The thing about franchised noir detectives is, as characters or story properties, they can’t fundamentally change. They solve mysteries, their settings are updated from 50s to 70s to aughts to 2019, they jadedly swear they’ll never trust again, they may seem to learn their lesson. But in the end the stories reset. Sure as sunset and the next story, they get let down, used, double-crossed, stung, only to begin again when the next sultry shadow darkens their door. Once again they give their loyalties to a friend in need, a dame with legs up to there. Once again the dames and mates evaporate; or worse, explicitly sell our fallible hero upriver, relying on said hero’s tragically loyal personal code to prevent retaliation.
We’ve all had those dames and mates. We’ve all sworn to never love again, only to willingly set ourselves up for more heartbreak. People who mean what they say only so long as they feel like it. Family who love you so long as you’re meekly in line. Dames who say “I love you” in the night and “I’m leaving you” in the morning. Business partners who call you family until it’s more expedient not to be. Friends who say forever but mean for as long as you’re fun, and you’re no fun when you’re stumbling through a haze of pain or grief. Homme fatales who sell you out when a better offer comes in. Lovers who are loyal while you do exactly what they want.
In the first of two crucial scenes which start placidly before exploding into brutal violence, thug Marty gives a speech to/about his girlfriend Joanne. “Delicate and sweet . . . I love you. I do. . . . The single most important person in my life.” Ah, love, the highest form of loyalty.
Then he hits her across the face with a glass bottle.
Tumblr media
Do we feel sorry for her? is the same question Tarantino asks in Once Upon A Time… In Hollywood when Brad Pitt’s Cliff smashes sadistic Sadie’s face with a can of dog food. The blow to Joanne’s face is lighter and unprovoked, but though her crimes are lighter, her madonna-like framing is window dressing. She blithely enjoys fruits of Marty’s torture, murder, and extortion, knowing her flippery is bought with blood money. (Her blow’s aftereffects are visually replicated by Jake’s bandages in Chinatown – directed by Polanski, who is depicted in Once Upon A Time, making these films a Möbius strip of themes, imagery, period, and settings.)
In different ways, Joanne and Sadie establish The Long Goodbye and Once Upon a Time‘s cruel worlds, where psychopaths and rich ruthless men get their way. Both center men with drinking and smoking habits, a dubious past, and a personal moral code. Marlowe and Cliff fight against the establishment, for themselves and their friends. Though they don’t believe in innocence, they want to believe people exist whose souls at least aren’t as dark as the rest of ours. Within their morality is loyalty; Cliff to Rick Dalton, Marlowe to Terry or at least the idea of him: “Terry Lenox was my friend you motherfucker . . . you don’t deserve to be alive you fuckin’ pig.” Rick and Terry don’t return the loyalty, yet Cliff and Marlowe can’t help themselves. It’s their code.
The Long Goodbye ending Ebert calls “off the wall” I see as wish fulfilment, same as Once’s. In the film Terry gets justice delivered by Marlowe, Bracket’s screenplay ‘fixing’ the book’s injustice. Altman revels in this playground where disloyalty equals death and real world consequences are momentarily suspended for a warped fairy tale ending.
The final shot is reminiscent of Holly Martins waiting on a tree-lined boulevard in The Third Man, another film featuring a man unendingly loyal to a death-faking friend who didn’t deserve such fidelity. The Long Goodbye’s last shot brings yellow in again, reminding us of Eileen’s dress, the faded sun on the beach, letters and pledges of friendship aged and brittled by time. Only here, Marlowe’s the one walking away, getting as happy an ending as one can hope for in noir.

Lennox blindsided Marlowe, then called him a fool for expecting others to do what he would in keeping his word. Pulp detectives are thrown under the bus or off a cliff with the shrugged excuse along the lines of “I knew you were tough enough to survive” or “sorry, you were just collateral damage.” Given enough time, “I threw you under the bus to save myself” becomes “It was the best option for both of us” becomes “you survived and are better for learning this lesson, you should be thanking me!” This essay draws parallels to Marlowe and Veronica Mars’ getting run over because of their clinging to loyalty, “an anchor that binds.”
But every detective also has their breaking point, the point at which they say the rules have been violated enough to justify them taking matters into their own hands.
Tumblr media
Marlowe: I have two friends in the world. One is a cat. The other is a murderer.
Is loyalty its own reward? Chandler’s book seems to argue it is, but Marlowe shooting his once-friend in the film argues something else. Grown and free of the romanticised prism Younger Me viewed Marlowe through, do I believe Chandler’s ending or Brackett’s?
The teenager who first read Chandler’s book would choose idealism: be true to your code, give your loyalty, those who turn on you will get what they deserve while you can keep the moral high ground. Even with grim answers in front of me, maybe I’d make like Marlowe, clinging stubbornly to loyalty disavowed by its recipient, or keeping myself preoccupied searching for answers and other mysteries.
While I want to hold to those ideals still, what are movies for if not to show us what we really want, wish-fulfilling our basest instincts? Watching now, I can’t help but savour that moment Marlowe tosses his cigarette, reaches into his waistband, and coolly shoots the man who treated his loyalty as commodity.
For #Noirvember, I wrote about the concept of loyalty in noir in general, and "The Long Goodbye" in particular. My upbringing was starkly black and white, everything strictly categorised as sin and acceptable, allowed and not.

That crave for affection. The menial nature of it.
Interesting people interest us. A sensitive person - sensible. Insensible. I take enough drugs to make a horse feel sick - my battle is to reduce - not to accelerate. Defined. - This is my new theme, I guess my new word. My style is discipline, calculation, precision of execution. Preparation loves victory. I am waiting. Though I am able to rmeind myself I shouldn’t be waiting for the validation. I shouldn’t be waiting for someone to sweep me off my heavy memories and appreciate me. Unfortunately - those in my situation are unlikely to make it. They are far more likely to recluse and die, or atrophy into a holding pattern to rectify their mistakes, I suppose it all depends. There is little room for assumptions in my world - and even less room for judgement. It’s not that judgement has become anything less important. It remains paramount to stabilising my lifes ongoing work. It’s just that a lot of the time I would judge to calculate things based on fear. The idea that I would be left alone, abandoned at the sight of my true nature. It took a long time to be able to trust myself both on and off my medication. A long time. Some part of me - still holds on. It wants that security, to know, not to want. To have instead of desire, but I find increasingly that having is something that I never really wanted in the end. What I wanted was companionship. A group of friends that can trust me, and who I can hang around without feeling compromised - or disrespected. I think that word - Respect. Means something else to me than it did before. To me I command it. I command it from Darren. From Renee. From Sarah. From Terry. No one is above it. It’s a command that has it’s roots in what I know I’m willing to do for loyalty. The sacrifice I’m willing to make. I know I can kill, because I have killed myself. A steady hand. Steady breathes. Fear and Anxiety are trivialities. I said I was willing to become homeless instead of burden myself with the bullshit of the world. That seems to have remained a truth when tested. I dreamed of riding a sports bike with boardies and a t-shirt - I did that. I did it illegally a lot as well. Trouble with the police. High quantities of illegal drugs in my backpack. No licence for 6 months - just haven’t told anyone except Jackson. The knife-edge is sometimes a bit too thick for the thrill. So I find myself wanting in the mornings. In the evenings. Craving novel. Different to the original. Different to the original idea of what will make me happy - what will reinvigorate my soul. But I know the truth about my soul. So does my sister. There is an emptiness there. Biological. Psychological. Electromagnetic. It’s a failure of propogation. I absorb the chaos of the external world and give out nothing. It is swallowed into an endlessness. A flow - unlike gas or fluid. It is a movement of death. I don’t understand yet how that can be helpful. Perhaps - in the way that my presence here under immense pressure has been helpful, I am not care-free, but I do not longer care. Psychological processes take time to reorientate. CBT done spontaneously with precision. They will reflect my new attitude. Perhaps I just never had to tjhink about validation when I was younger. I never wanted it. At least consciously. When Mum died I was happy. And her crushing burden lfifted to allow me to be free and ignore the world. It became my playground. BUt i was unhelpfully shielded. As such - what happened afterwards cost. I haven’t been raped. Or sent to jail. I haven’t killed. I am kind. I am these things because I am not stupid enough to get raped or sent to jail. I haven’t killed because I can engineer people out of my life. I am kind because others have been cruel. This is the respect I demand. It’s a capacity for violence which I’ve seen let go only once. Everyone living their perfect lives. I no longer want perfect. I want my life. I have seen beauties, scenes, people, ideas, conflict, war, destruction, solutions, hypocrisy, tales, romance, love, hate, kinship, comradering, languages, hopes, failures, dreams, realisations, progressions, regressions. There is a...vastness. I used to believe this vastness was a reason to feel...in control - that through learning and knowledge progressive - I would understand the nature of all things - know and grow to learn and understand the truth of the reasons why I was experiencing what I was experiencing. I identify hope and capitalise on joy where I found it but I found little joy where I wanted to. I found joy in the little things. Little things I could only dream of having. Relationships I would never have and stories that would never be my reality. I realised more and more that I was alone - and that unbenownst to me - my desire to Know - had led me to a set of truths which confronted me with little else besides one solution. Tolerate your mind. So that your mind and body might be of help. There is nothing redeeming or joyful about the cosmos or the universe. It is a plague on the way our minds are built - concepts such as space - time - infinity - finite numbers - dimensions - quantum physics - black holes - humanity - green planets - solar systems - the big bang - entropy - the unnecessary need for men - or their greed. The reality of the imbalance of powers. The limitations of cognition. General IQ. Social structures and the necessary bottom-end chaos/regulation needed to maintain them. Social mobility - economic structures. Human impulse. Sex. Over-population, fisheries depletion, ecosystem degradation, extinction rates. Artificial Intelligence. Big data - Cyber-security. FIAT money. Geology. Aqua tables - imperfect evolution - change. Systems theory. Chaos theory. Heuristics. Medicine. Curiosity. Nuclear weapons. I dont trust anyone who doesn’t recognise the flawed nature of themselves. Nearly all guys wont. It’s against their neural code. Most women wont, because to appear weak is against the social norm now. Judgement. and so I am here. Experimenting with truly not processing the world around me. I’m too over caring, wanting, hating, jealousy, sadness. These things don’t help. I always could do what others wouldn’t let alone - couldn’t. I don’t give a fuck because I don’t have to. And because frankly I don’t want to. It truly is baffling to wake to the same scenery each day - it’s progressive changes over time. Green is beginning to seed back. There is a slowness - a rhythm - marked by the sunset and sunrise - the clouds - the swap of trees - the rush of waves crashing - the reasons - the growth - the death. Each it’s own a part of the harmony. Though life is no easier at this pace. It makes more sense and it feels less delicate.

I never thought that I would have seen the day to interview one of the most beautiful and talented women that had mega hits from the 80’s up to the early 2000’s. This remarkable young woman is the first female artist to have her first three solo releases to hit #1 on the Billboard. Karyn White made a  huge splash on the music scene with her female anthem “Superwoman” in which was produced and written by Babyface and LA Reid. In this article you will learn about how Ms. White was discovered and what she got coming up for all KW Hearts out there.
Karyn White was born and raised in Los Angeles, California. Growing up in LA was amazing for her. “Here in LA you get to see so much, and you can dream your dreams and have them come true“. At an young age Karyn (she is the baby of the family) would often imitate her older sisters, one was a dancer and the other one was a singer with a voice that reminded her of Natalie Cole. With such influences in her family Karyn combine her family’s multi-talents into one big mega star package. At the age of 16 she auditioned for a group called Legacy. During that time Karyn participated in beauty pageants, talent shows, and continue her road to auditions.
Q&A With Karyn White
Rena Marie: Karyn what kind of impact has music made in your life?
Karyn White: Wow! Music is my life. It gave me purpose, music is healing and therapeutic. Music allows me to dream and make them come true. Music took me out of the hood, and gave me opportunities to travel around the world to experience different things.
Rena Marie: Who are some of your musical influences?
Karen White: Back in my day I often listen to and watched Stephanie Mills, Diana Ross, Michael Jackson, Luther Vandross, Chaka Khan, Prince, James Brown, Donna Summers, and Al Green.
Rena Marie: I can truly say that you are an artist who actually embodied the sounds and dance of those who influenced you. I can hear Stephanie Mills, Chaka Khan, Diana Ross in your voice and I can see the sassy choreography of Donna Summers.
Karyn White: Thank you oh wow! I learned the songs and choreography from the Wiz (both Diana Ross and Stephanie Mills versions) and performed them at talent shows.
Rena Marie: Who discovered you?
Karyn White: Initially I would have to say Don Cornelius from Soul Train.
This slideshow requires JavaScript.
Rena Marie: Was there a special event that took place for Don Cornelius to notice your talent?
Karyn White: At the time I was 17 years old, just graduated from high school when I auditioned for Don Cornelius and his artist O’Bryan. I performed a song and a routine from a soundtrack and they loved it. I was on tour with O’Bryan who was an opening act for the group Cameo. This was my first professional paid show.
Rena Marie: Have you ever done or considered doing Broadway Shows?
Karyn White: That is actually on my bucket list of things to do. However in high school I have been in plays. One play I will never forget is me playing the role of Dorothy from the Wiz. I was the first person to make it professionally out of the group in high school. I went to school with Bentley Kyle Evans the creator of the Martin Show and The Jamie Foxx show, and the beautiful and talented actress Wendy Raquel Robinson. Wendy and I took dance classes together, she is an amazing dancer. So shout out to Wendy and Bentley!
Rena Marie: You have memorable albums that people still listen to today. Which album is your favorite?
Karyn White: It will have to be my first album self-titled Karyn White. With all of the talented and beautiful hard working artists in Los Angeles, this album broke the barrier and became a huge success. I worked extremely hard and it paid off. So yes my first album is my favorite.
Rena Marie: I remember some of your number 1 hits from backyard parties at family functions, but of course I had to do a little research to see if you had any other songs that I may not recall hearing. For the first time I heard a Duet you had with Kenneth “Babyface” Edmonds. How was it recording with Babyface?
Karyn White: Yes! “Love Saw It” is the name of the song that I did with Babyface. This is actually my favorite song because I was singing in my lower register. It was awesome working with Babyface. He has incredible talent.
Rena Marie: Have you worked with Babyface on any other song or album?
Karyn White: Yes! Babyface and LA Reid produced and wrote 6 songs on my first album self titled Karyn White. They wrote “Super Woman”, “Romantic”, “Secret Rendezvous”, and so forth. They also produced songs for Johnny Gill and Bobby Brown in which I sung background for them and other artists.
Rena Marie: Did you actually started off as a background singer?
Karyn White: I started out as a background singer. I sung background for Bobby Brown on “Tender Roni”, “Every Little Step”, and I sung on Johnny Gill’s “My My My”….I sung background for a lot of artists back then.
Rena Marie: I am glad that you came out from the shadows because your voice is so amazing.
Karyn White: Thank you! You know what they say the cream rises to the top!
Rena Marie: I know that a lot of artists change their music as the next generation of musical talents evolve the creativity of sounds. How do you feel about music today, and will you change your music to follow the music trend of today?
Karyn White: I listen to artists of today such as Kendrick Lamar, Jay-Z, Beyonce who is an amazing talent, Childish Gambino, Janelle Monae, Jhene Aiko, and J. Cole. As far as keeping up with the trends I want my music to stay true to me. I am bringing back the funk. The 60’s and 70’s to me had the best music, and that is evident today because artists of today are sampling music from those eras. Kendrick Lamar sampled the Isley Brothers and he brought back the funk. I feel the younger generation will appreciate funk music.
I am currently working on my new movie and soundtrack “Gale & The Storm”. After listening to Childish Gambino who is of this generation of young artist bringing back the funk in his music. Childish Gambino inspired me to keep true to myself and to bring back the funk. “Gale & The Storm” is loosely about me. Gale the main character was a funk singer who took a step back from music at the pinnacle of her career. I will always stay true to me and I don’t want to be fake about my music. People will listen to it and for those that don’t listen to it they just don’t. I know that this generation will enjoy the music based off of the funk music that Kendrick Lamar, Childish Gambino, and Janelle Monae are bringing back.
Rena Marie: I must say that you are beautiful and have not aged a bit. What are Karyn’s secret to your youthful appearance?
Karyn White: I always tell young people to take care of themselves and be mindful of what you put into your body. The food industry has changed and now we are subjected to genetically modified foods. I always say stop eating fake food. Take care of your body with proper diet and exercise.
Rena Marie: I am sure you heard about artists that had mental break down due to lack of rest or just events that took place that was a bit more that they could juggle at the time. You were at the height of your career at the time you went on hiatus, what was going on at the time?
Karyn White: At the time I was married to Terry Lewis of the Mega producing duo Terry Lewis and Jimmy Jam (responsible for a lot of artists music hits such as Michael and Janet Jackson, New Edition, Johnny Gill, Raja Nee, Usher, Mary J. Blige, Mariah Carey, Boyz II Men, Klymaxx, Chaka Khan, Alexander Oneal, Cherrelle, Vanessa Williams, Ralph Tresvant, just to name a few). During that time Terry and I we were the first Jay-Z and Beyonce because  we were a superstar couple. People looked up to us and Terry was a great guy, a great husband. We had our daughter Ashley and my mom passed away. So with all this going on I was not being appreciative of my blessings. I never turned to drugs or alcohol, but I hurt myself by not appreciating everything that was coming my way. I had a good man, a beautiful career especially with my first album, a beautiful baby girl, and before Terry and I broke up we had just built a 30k sq foot mansion. I got into interior decorating and realty, I would buy homes decorate them and sell them. Every two years I would buy a home, fix it up, and flip them. I was flipping homes up to when the market crashed in the year 2000.  I went on to dating a younger man who had the dreams of becoming the next Kanye West or Jay-Z. This relationship was not a good one due to the fact that this man came from the “microwave” generation. He thought that he could do the minimum work to get the great payday. I would say the good thing about him was that he helped me find my swag, but he was very narcissistic. Thank God I never spiraled out of control, instead I channeled that energy into realty, interior design, and creating a path for my comeback.
Rena Marie: Now that you are coming out with a new movie and soundtrack dedicated to funk music, Will you be coming out with a new album? Who are you looking forward to working with?
Karyn White: I am definitely planning on working on a new album. I have spoken with Ralph Tresvant from the group New Edition and we will be working on something together. I have not reached out to other people yet, but I will have a star studded album in the works.
Rena Marie: Speaking of Ralph Tresvant who is my heart throb from back in the day, recently New Edition had a 3 day mini movie series about their road to stardom. What do you think about their biopic movie?
Karyn White: I must say they did a real good job. Especially the young man that played as Ralph, he did such an incredible job, all of the cast did a marvelous job. When I spoke to Ralph he stated that the actor that played him was “Playing as me a little too hard…lol”. They were very pleased with the outcome of the movie.
Rena Marie: Do you see a Karyn White Biopic coming?
Karyn White: That would be awesome if someone actually come up with a Biopic about me, but for now I want to put out more work and make my comeback part of my musical milestone before considering a biopic.
Rena Marie: Anything you would like for people to know about what is next for Karyn White?
Karyn White: I am back! Be sure to go to my website karynwhite.me to get the lastest updates on music, tours, and so much more. Be on the lookout for my new movie and soundtrack “Gale & The Storm”. I love you all!
Sidenote: Karyn White had a Red Carpet affair on 10/12/17 for her new movie premier in Sacramento, CA. Be sure to go to her website karynwhite.me for more info on how to get the funkalicious soundtrack and the movie Gale & The Storm.
Karyn White- Super Woman to Seize the Day I never thought that I would have seen the day to interview one of the most beautiful and talented women that had mega hits from the 80's up to the early 2000's.
