Sometimes I think about how Adrien, throughout the series, constantly grapples with his fear of abandonment. Gabriel conditioned him to believe that any love he receives is purely transactional, and that to earn affection he has to prove his utility. Adrien is constantly trying to prove his worth to his father for scraps of affection, and Chat Noir infamously crumbles on-screen any time he feels as though he is replaceable to Ladybug. It's a constant insecurity of his, like everyone will just dump him like a sack of potatoes the moment they find out how useless he is.
Meanwhile, all Marinette wants to is ensure that Adrien is happy. Because she loves him. She doesn't give two shits about how """useful""" he is. She holds him and tells him that she will never abandon him (both as Ladynoir and as Adrienette), and her fantasies are about saving him, not about him being "useful" to her. Throughout their relationship, Adrien is forced to disappoint Marinette constantly for reasons outside of his control (amok commands), and yet Marinette is still there for him.
At Adrien's lowest point, when he is forcibly torn away from everyone who had ever showed him genuine care, locked away in an all-white room and at his most "useless", right after disappointing Marinette and unable to even join the final battle or contribute in any way, she still saves him. She still loves him. Because he doesn't have to prove anything to her. Because he is loved and cherished for who he is, not for what he does, and that love is not conditional. Adrien's "happy ending" at the end of the first arc wasn't about him finally proving how useful he can be, because he never actually cared about being useful — he just saw it as the only means to feel loved and needed. Instead, in the end, he found out that he was loved and needed no matter what.

I actually think he should be bigger and look more middle aged, personally.

I love Laios for many reasons but my silliest reason is that he is TANK REPRESENTATION. My boy is 100% farm raised beef and while he can obviously handle himself in a fight, I love that he doesn't have any cool weapon skills or special abilities outside of tactical monster knowledge. He just swings his sword. His job in combat is to wear heavy as fuck armor and throw his weight around. Ryoko Kui knows that a real tank isn't afraid to get brain damage (that's what the healer is there for).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Conversely, this is also one reason why I love Kabru, in the opposite direction, because I am a career DPS and I love his pure DPS energy. I love that he's a Dex fighter who looks like a baby deer and keeps a knife in his boot.
Tumblr media
He and Laios were destined to team up and be an unstoppable tank/DPS combo, they just weren't in the right story for it.

I'm trying to catch up with BSD s5 now that I have time and I'm less than 2 minutes into ep 2 and already I'm going insane and shaking someone's metaphorical shoulders because, because -
"I trusted my soul."
"Actually, I had no way of knowing if they'd believe me."
That's how a story WORKS. The story only has power over you so far as you give it power over you. And if you are a reader or the author of a story, you have that choice to break free from the narrative that's entrapping you. It's like when we get so invested in a piece of fiction and it starts taking over our lives and we have to take a step back and go, right...this is fiction. I know what reality is because I am an individual soul, not a narrative's character and plaything and this story only have power over me as much as I give it power. The characters in BSD might be the characters of the BSD narrative, but they are not the characters of the Book. They are people. Unpredictable, beautiful people that even Ranpo - who CAN predict everything that follows the pattern of a story - cannot fully predict. Because you cannot predict a person's actions or thoughts or future, you can only trust in them

So I was looking at the manga to post this reply, and I noticed something about William’s eyes as he falls from the bridge. This could just be me reaching and looking for symbolism where there isn’t any but… what’s the point in being obsessed with something if you’re not going to make possibly wildly inaccurate interpretations of it, right?
When he cuts Sherlock’s arm (thoughts about that here), we see William’s left eye.
Tumblr media
Then when he sees Sherlock jumping after him we see his right eye.
Tumblr media
The left eye is the one we see when Sherlock is reaching for him: (this is also the last time we see William’s left eye until the Bench Scene)
Tumblr media
And then we see the right when he catches him:
Tumblr media
And it’s his right eye that we see close peacefully after Sherlock says they both need to live:
Tumblr media
So it seems like his left eye symbolizes his desire to die, and his right eye symbolizes his desire to live. His left eye gets damaged, but he no longer wants to die and chooses to live on.

Hush, child, the darkness will rise from the deep And carry you down into sleep, Child, the darkness will rise from the deep And carry you down into sleep. (Loyalty loyalty loyalty loyalty Loyalty loyalty loyalty only to me.) -- Mordred's Lullaby
Personal preferred interpretation of *gestures to everything* under the cut! Warning for blatant and shameless conflation of multiple versions of the text with pure, self-indulgent headcanons.
I've gone back and forth on this a lot, but I think I've finally settled on preferring Eol to be both a Dark Elf (i.e. never went to Aman) and a "darkened elf" (i.e. former thrall of Angband/corrupted by Melkor). I know Tolkien changed his mind on both of these later, but I don't find it repetitive at all to have Maeglin also suffer the same fate; I think the cycle is meaningful and adds another layer of complexity to these characters. Also, it would give Eol's "ill at ease" within Melian's girdle and seeking to stay away additional meaning, making it a physical consequence of his circumstances and not only a predilection of his personality. Idk, the more layers and reasons something has behind it, the more enjoyment I draw from it :)
I do like Eol being Sindar and Thingol's kin, but also more alike in spirit and behavior to the Avari than anything else. Witch of the Wilds aesthetic, and more in tune with nature and the land than the Sindar in Doriath. He and Maeglin have always given me a Morgana and Mordred vibe. (fun fact: the mirror is supposed to be obsidian, which is used for scrying.)
He truly loved his son, and his relationship with Maeglin was no more and no less positive/negative than your average father-son relationship -- some minor disagreements as any parent and child are bound to have -- until Maeglin started expressing a desire to see the Noldor; and it was all downhill from there. He still loved his son, however, despite everything, and his attempt to choose death over Gondolin for him was done out of love as well. Perhaps not a healthy love, but a genuine one all the same.
Eol being a darkened elf + Maeglin being born in Beleriand + the "Melkor ingredient" present in all matter outside of the Blessed Realm = a compounded (x3) tendency towards Melkor within Maeglin's spirit that was there since he was conceived. If everyone who has a body that is nourished by Arda (outside of Aman) has an inclination towards Melkor that they can't be free of in their incarnate forms, how much stronger might that be if one of your parents is a former thrall who -- going off of his behavior and tendencies -- still bears the marks of that bond? I like to think that the way Melkor affects his thralls can carry down genetically, even for elves that remain elves and weren't turned into orcs.
I personally prefer Maeglin to not be under an enchantment as a way to explain why he betrayed Gondolin -- I like him being responsible for his own actions! Even if he also never had a chance and was doomed from before he was born. I like the interplay of those two concepts and generally don't find them mutually exclusive -- but I do love the idea of compulsion. Of his pre-existing link to Melkor through Eol and through Arda being used (I prefer this to be Mairon's work, but it certainly can be done by Melkor instead) to sway him. Like, not Mairon actually spelling him and making him not be in control of his body or not being able to warn people in Gondolin because his speech is bound, etc., but like. Mairon slipping certain elements into the fabric of his voice -- he is Ainur; underscoring his speech with Music is no big deal -- to manipulate that Melkor ingredient within Maeglin and make him be more receptive. Compliant. Add to that some carefully crafted understanding as one talented smith who knows what it is like to feel ill-suited to his surroundings to another, a little bribery, and, of course, the ever-present and very real threat of torture -- in delicately balanced respective quantities -- and done.
This is totally entirely self-indulgent headcanon territory here, especially since Mairon is never actually present for Maeglin's imprisonment in any version of the text (to my knowledge) BUT: I like to think that, just as with Maedhros in my headcanons, Mairon formed a kind of reluctant attachment to Maeglin. But whereas with Maedhros it was more of an equal footing type of thing, a grudging acknowledgement of a worthy opponent being cut from the same cloth, with Maeglin it's more of a foster situation. Like: "Here is this very valuable prisoner who we can work with, who -- with a only a small amount of effort -- is amenable to working together and he's the son of a former thrall so there's already a connection there and, oh, he's also a smith? Oh, he's actually pretty good. Wait, he's only 189 years old, idk because I've never cared much for elves but isn't that ridiculously young wtf, he's clearly ambitious and reeling for approval and acknowledgement and will easily take to a guiding hand. Well, there's no one else around but me, I guess I'll take one for the team and the war effort and all that" *accidentally transfers all the instructing instincts he possesses that had previously gone to his wolves now all long dead, he doesn't keep wolves anymore since losing Tol-in-Guarhoth, it's too painful to this strange elf* Again, not healthy, but complicated and messy and invested.
... I did not mean to make it all about Mairon again lmao I am so sorry XD
I'm sure I'll have additional thoughts as I keep re-reading the Silmarillion, or my opinions/preferences may somewhat alter (I still have to sit down and read HoME and Nature of Middle Earth properly, I've only read snippets), but. an overwhelming number of you voted that you enjoyed reading stuff like this so. There you go. This is where I'm currently at lol.

I know ppl can't help it but fuck me, I've seen so many angry or sad posts this week where the person is obsessing over some issue that's literally not an issue BC it makes them feel less lonely
"ugh this is the wrong kind of trans person to do this thing that I also do" babe please get some friends. Drink a hot chocolate. Have some sex. Listen to a podcast you like. Have a bath
Literally do anything other than litigating in your head like, the reason this other random half-invented trans person doesn't have it as bad as you
They don't matter, their life doesn't and won't affect you, please be kind to yourself and just stop obsessing over them and go do anything else
"but my life is so much worse than--" yeah so do something about that! You can't make that persons life worse by complaining or obsessing about it, but you can do yourself a kindness or two!

that saying that's like "to be loved is to be known" always gets to me because i think that's what i'm trying to convey when i talk about love being stored in the memes you send you friends that make you both laugh out loud, and the info dumps you sit through because you know your friend is oh so passionate, and the messages that go "hey, i saw *insert band* you like is coming to our city. do you wanna go?" to be loved is to have people know exactly what will make you smile. to love others is to have things that makes you think of them and go "i should send them this." yeah, i think to be loved really is to be known.

i have extremely passionate beef with matpatt specifically because he made One video that ripped off a fairly niche hermitcraft theory and i can never really explain that to people without deep diving on the lore so i just stew in vague haterism.
NO YEAH I WAS THERE FOR THAT!!!! fucking. i feel bad for not remembering the actual op's name. but i remember when that video dropped and all of hermitblr collectively went "wait. we've fucking heard that before" and then any comments left on that video about him blatantly ripping it off word-for-word got deleted or buried or smth

Just thinking about the implications of this, but Halsin's way of indicating that his family has long passed is: "save for [him], [his] line perished a long time ago".
Aside from it being a decidedly more old fashioned and more eloquent way of indicating what happened (as is shown in shades in Halsin's speaking patterns, which is likely trying to illustrate his age as well as push the "wise mentor" angle), by stating that his line has ended with him, practically, it means both sets of grandparents are gone, both parents are gone, and either Halsin is an only child (unlikely considering Wood Elves, but possible), or any and all of his siblings are gone, too. And if you stretch what you consider part of a line, rather than just keeping direct, that could extend to aunts and uncles and cousins as well (though it's hard to say concretely what Halsin includes in a familial line).
So it leaves me to wonder what happened to reduce an entire elven line to one elf, when Halsin himself is only just approaching middle-age and he pointedly says it happened a long time ago, so it wasn't a recent event, and the lot of them likely didn't die from old age/natural causes. Was his entire village wiped out at one point? Disease or a raid or orcs or a wildfire or what?

So I watched De Palma's Femme Fatale (2002) tonight, and there's this one scene. In short, the MC (blonde woman called Laure Ash/Lily Watts) gets thrown off a bridge into a river while unconscious, and this shot occurs;
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Like, does that or does that not look like the TPWBYT cover?? The hands are in the same position, the bubbles hide the face, and the legs in an earlier shot, and the MC is drowning. That place will become her tomb, in story context, if she doesn't swim up. Of course, the colour grading is very different, but my point still stands!
Clip for anybody who wants it (warning for nudity).

going into someone’s dms on instagram or wherever else just doesn’t hold the same energy as it does here.
idk,,,messaging a mutual thru asks or dms on tumblr just has a different vibe, yknow? it’s like being a little kid and knocking on your friend’s door in the middle of august and going “do you wanna look for bugs at the park with me? do you want to pick raspberries from the ravine and hold so so still that butterflies land on our wrists? the birds are always singing here and there’s no one who will do us harm. we can chase each other up the street, laughing, until the fireflies begin to flicker and the streetlights come on.”
