Finished re-reading F*shigi Y*gi part 1 and the first and final arcs still spark joy so I'll keep my collection but volumes 9-11 were so frustrating that I'm gonna roast them a little under the cut (and be a bit critical of other aspects that don't hold up 30 years on)

Major spoilers and references to SA in the series under the cut! (And it's a super long rant!)

The dip in quality from 9 onwards was such a shame! The plot just turns into various enemies trying to rape the 15-year-old protagonist for three volumes! Not to be a pearl clutcher but Watase says the target demographic is middle school - junior high students and there's just a whole arc where:

It's implied that Nakago raped Miaka. It's later revealed he didn't manage to penetrate her and everyone is like 'oh phew! 😄' and her traumatic nightmares about her memories of him stripping her and pinning her down before she fainted just stop. 🤦

Also, in the author note alongside that part Watase comments that things are getting dark but points out that we've just learned that Yui didn't actually get raped by strangers so it's not all bad. Mate, your protagonist is being assaulted?? We can't take much solace in that revelation right now!

Then there's a bit where Amiboshi climbs on top of her while she's sleeping naked and kisses her without her consent (his parents had drugged her).

Meanwhile, Soi disguises herself as Miaka and tries to seduce Tamahome. I know it's a product of it's time but ughh the way Tamahome almost getting raped is handled so differently to scenes where Miaka is assaulted - it's awful. And there's also a 'gag' parody page where it replicates the scene where Tamahome found Miaka after she's been assaulted by Nakago but makes it look like one of the gay characters had raped Tamahome.

After his comrades have failed to take her virginity and stop her from summoning Suzaku, Tomo, who Watase confirms is gay, also tries to rape Miaka. 😑

In the last volume, Watase shares the ideas that there wasn't space for and they were so good 🥲 maybe you could have removed one of the SA scenes or one of the twenty times Miaka or Tamahome breaks it off and runs away to protect the other?

I used to like the author notes but this time they kept rubbing me the wrong way. Watase would say things like 'too bad we HAVE to spank our tiny terrier puppy to discipline it 🫤' or share racist travelogues about trips to China.

But it's kind of funny that in the author notes, Watase hinted at shipping Tamahome and Nakago 😂 never really gushed about how much she loved Tamahome/Miaka as a ship though. I quite like Keisuke/Tamahome as a ship - they got on well.

I was thinking about ranting about how Nuriko is handled but that's hard because 1. 90s 2. Another culture 3. Watase later came out as X gender so the offensive character notes were probably well intentioned and might be regretted now? 4. The translators had to do the usual thing of deciding which pronouns the character that's almost certainly trans would use, while also translating jokes that implied Nuriko is simply crossdressing for funsies and deciphering whatever the hell happened in vol 8 where Nuriko decided to be cis and in love with Miaka for a chapter or two.

I started shipping Tasuki and Nuriko this time and I was delighted to see 20 whole fics on AO3 but almost all of them misgender Nuriko. Maybe the anime subbers used different pronouns or Nuriko's backstory was different in the anime? Watase said someone did a Tasuki/Nuriko doujin and they wanted to read it. Same!

I used to think I wasn't attached to most of the Suzaku warriors beyond Tasuki because I'd re-read the first few volumes way more times than the rest but Watase really didn't give the others much to say or do! 😬 I feel sorry for the fans of Mitsukake(?) Apparently there were lots of Hotohori fans but I always found him creepy; despite his gentle actions, he never seemed to listen to Miaka's wishes. Yandere behaviour. Lucky for me he wasn't in it much (I also feel sorry for his fans lmao)

Forgot how much character death there was towards the end. It's impressive that Watase included characters from the Genbu and Byakko arcs decades before they were written IRL. I don't think I'll read those since FY suggests they ended badly? I wonder if much was retconned.

10. Pick an author (or writing friend) to co-write a book with

Oh gosh. That’s not an easy one to answer. Co-writing is harder than co-habitating. I absolutely LOVE the way that Anne Bishop, Rob Thurman, and Carol Berg write, and would love to be any part of their writing process, but OTOH I would NOT want to muck up their writing with my own. O_O And my own writing process is so inconsistent that I’m not sure I’d be much fun to write with, either. But maybe someday you and I could take a stab at it. ;D

20. Any advice for young writers/advice you wish someone would have given you early on?

YES. Write what you love. It doesn’t matter what it is or how “self-indulgent” it feels or how many times it’s been written before. If you love it, write it.

And FFS, finish things. Even if you think they suck. Even if they’re not popular. If you let yourself never finish your stories, it becomes a habit that’s REALLY hard to break and eventually you’ll reach a point where you no longer know HOW. And that’s a problem. :P (And speaking as someone who DID fall into this bad habit, it really, really is a problem and trust me... you don’t want it. :P)

The only way you get better at writing is to do it. Just... write. I read a piece of advice once that basically said, “You’re going to reach a point where your writing sucks. You’ll hate every word you put to paper. It’s because you’ve leveled up enough that your taste has outstripped your ability. The way to get past it is to KEEP WRITING. Eventually, your ability will catch up until the next time you hit that plateau, and so on and so forth.” It was the most liberating thing I ever read. You WILL reach a point when you hate everything you write. You will reach a point when you look back at things you wrote (AND LOVED) two years ago and think “Holy SHIT, what was I thinking, this is awful,” and THAT’S OK. Both are signs that you’re improving, and that’s a wonderful thing. ^_^

22. Tell us about the books on your “to write” list

...holy oh my goodness. *eyes list of WiPs* THE POST ISN’T LONG ENOUGH. *falls over* Especially if we’re talking fanfiction. If we’re talking actual books, I really only have one WiP and I’m still not sure how to summarize it in any kind of a way that sounds appealing... especially as I haven’t even entirely sorted out who the main character is. :P

25. What’s your worldbuilding process like?

Completely random. No, really. Anything can spark an idea. Muet-verse sparked out of a really bizarre dream I had. FYFM sparked out of someone else’s tumblr headcanon post. I have an ExF story I’m working on that sparked out of two pictures I saw. Once I have that idea, my brain gets the bit in its proverbial teeth and OFF IT RUNS. I don’t know how to NOT write in entire universes. Usually they build organically and I figure things out as I need to figure them out; other times, they’re more planned than that, but not by much.

40. Do you look up to any of your writer buddies?

EVERY SINGLE ONE OF YOU. Like, I literally cannot single anyone out. I think you’re all amazing, and I think you write a thousand times better than I do. If you think this answer is about you? IT IS. EVERY ONE OF YOU.

49. Favorite fictional world?

...too many to count. -.-;;; No, but for real. I have SO MANY favorite fictional worlds and I could not even BEGIN to narrow that down. For my own worlds, Muet-verse is probably at the top of the list right now, with the No Man is an Island-verse running a close second and both of my aro/ace!Courfeyrac x Feuilly ‘verses running a close third. I also REALLY like the ExF fantasy AU that I started and am planning to try to actually write for ExF week. I also really, really love this long, sprawling fantasy/modern reincarnation RP ‘verse that my friend Wren and I built back in college. It’s still one of my favorite places to play. ^_^

As for favorite published worlds? Yikes. YIKES. Seriously too many to count, but some that make the list: Anne Bishop’s Black Jewels and Tir Alainn worlds. Rob Thurman’s Cal Leandros and All-Seeing Eye worlds, Sarah Monette’s Melusine world, Patrick Thomas’ Bulfinche’s Pub world, SO MANY TV SHOW AND MOVIE WORLDS, and I know I’m leaving out a thousand book worlds, too, but those are a few, at least. ^_^

[Fandom] Roleplay Search || 01.13.2017

(She’s back… after an unforeseen hiatus).

Introduction

Good morning, afternoon or evening to those who stumble upon this, like most I would like to find a partner to write long-term. At the moment I don’t have many, and wouldn’t mind at least two to three more. I should probably say a bit about myself, I am twenty-four years old and have been writing about 08 years +. I was a member of Quizilla, where I used to search for partners back in the day. I tend to lurk on other roleplay oriented sites such as RP.Me, and Tumblr from time to time. Below, I will list my rules, current cravings, full roleplay list and some last minute notes. If you see something that catches your eye please do contact me through one of the contact mediums I’ve listed; thank you.

Note: So, as mentioned above I had to take an unforeseen hiatus due to a number of things. (School and health being the two main contributors). However, I am back after a well-needed rest and ready to write again. As of today’s date I have reached out to everyone with whom I was speaking with and sent out replies. If we were speaking a while back (forgive me for disappearing), and you haven’t heard back from me, I’d love to get back in contact with you and begin where we left off. ❤

Types of Roleplay

Basic: Contact me with what fandom(s) you're interested in, we'll make a mutual decision on the choice, before exchanging oc information and discussing plots. The format is what we're all used to: portraying our oc's, each other's love interest(s) and side characters.

Doubles: More or less the same as above, except if there is more than one thing you'd like to do and are up for doing more than roleplay, than we can. I will probably only accept 2-3 per person, due to time management.

Split: The format is similar to the basic formula, we both choose one fandom of our respective sides. Then, exchange oc information, love interests and plots.

Split 2.5: This is similar to the former, but different than the ones before it. Normally, a split roleplay is done where we choose two separate fandoms; but I can make an exception for a basic format if that is what you wish. Now, here is where it's different after we choose our respective fandoms, along with our oc information we will include a big or small write up of a plot for our character and their love interest(s). Now, I will give my partner full-rein in regards to what kind of plot they want. Want a storyline filled with drama and mayhem? Go for it. Want a reverse harem storyline with four characters vying for your character's heart? Fine with me. This is your opportunity to play out any kind of headcanons and storylines you wish. I only ask for nothing that violates my rules or limits, otherwise sky's the limit. I may accept 2-3 per person. If you need help with a storyline, let me know.

Rules and Regulations

『LENGTH 』Normally, I will write one to two paragraphs on both sides. However, that is not my limit for I can write anywhere between one to five paragraphs per sides. Length for a single paragraph can range anywhere between 200-500+ words, whereas each individual side usually equates anywhere from 400-800+ words. I like to consider myself a paragraph|multi-paragraph writer, although I know a lot of people are converting to novella writers, I can accommodate to a novella partner just beware that it will take me longer to reply to you as opposed to someone else. This is due to how much time and effort that goes into novella responses. I am the type of person who likes to take the time to construct a quality response, rather than rush and send someone a response for the sake of replying. Which is why I ask, please give me time to write your response.

『FORMAT 』I can write in either first or third person, despite preferring first because I can connect with my character more; I will do whatever my partner feels more comfortable with and if that’s second so be it. Also, don’t forget that roles between the two of us should follow accordingly; I play my OC, your love interest(s) and additional side characters. While you play your OC, my love interest(s) and additional side characters.

『LOVE INTERESTS, MARY SUES AND SPOTLIGHT』I’m lenient when it comes to love interests, as I allow more than one suitor for our characters because love triangles make the story more interesting. However, I would ask that if we just so happen to have the same choice(s) for a love interest that we don’t fight about it; instead try to sort things out. I’ve literally had someone threaten me, simply because I liked the same person as them (I’m not kidding). Second, I’m not an extremist when it comes to characters; meaning I won’t knit pick about every little thing. All I ask is no Mary-Sues and no hogging the spotlight; this is a storyline created between the two us. Let’s share it please.

『SPELLING AND GRAMMAR』There are a lot of people who tend to knit pick about this; but rest assured I will not. All I ask is that you have a decent grasp on both spelling and grammar. Do this and we’ll get along fine; this is something that I can and will promise you.

『MANNERS AND ETIQUETTE 』This should be common knowledge, but all I ask is that during our time writing together that you treat me with respect and courtesy; I will return the gesture as it is only right. I’d like us to get along, I would hate for a disagreement to ensure and there was bad blood between us due to something frivolous.

『PATIENCE AND COMMITMENT』I am a full-time student, attending college and leave for school early in the morning and return home later in the afternoon; I am usually quite tired when I return home, but I try to reply to my partners as frequent as possible. However there are times, unfortunately when I cannot reply when I’d like due to an abundant amount of assignments, health issues which can lead to me becoming sick or an emergency at home. I try to inform my partners of these occurrences, but if you don’t hear from me in two to three weeks time don’t be afraid to send me a message and ask me about it. What I won’t accept, is being spammed every five seconds with the same message; again and again because I’m not replying like you’d like me to. I do my best to get to you all, roleplay is supposed to be fun and enjoyable; an escape from reality for both of us. It shouldn’t have to feel like a job. I will do the same for you because I understand everyone here has different lives and schedules to attend to; but please don’t ditch me half-way through the roleplay. If you need to take a break or something; then please tell me. I don’t bite- I’ll understand.

『LIMITS 』Tell me your limits when sending a request, as the last thing I’d want is to make you uncomfortable. My limits consist of the following; malexmale/femalexfemale/incest/pedophilia/bestiality. This is where my limits stand, these may or may not change depending on future roleplays; however if you’re unsure about something please don’t hesitate to ask me. Now onto what I will do, I am open to mature themes within the roleplays; I actually encourage them. That includes; cursing, violence, blood, smut, alcohol and lemons. However, I would like to keep the language and lemons to a certain level, meaning no dropping ‘F’ bombs every five seconds and no roleplays dedicated to sexual activities and sexual activities alone. No, there is more to a roleplay than that and I will not engage in such.

『CANON, CROSSOVER OR AU』I can do strictly canon roleplays or an alternate universe roleplay. Alternate Universes can range from 'what if' situations, different settings and scenarios. If you have an idea let me know, or we can brainstorm ideas together; I also have a list of AU prompts so let me know if you'd like to take a look at it. I am also crossover friendly

『LOCATION』 I can write through email, instant messenger (yahoo, aol, msn), Skype, Kik or Tumblr.

『OCC CHIT CHAT』I'd like to chat on the sidelines with my partners, as it allows the two of us to get to know each other; thus making things less awkward for the both of us. Plus, I like to make friends with my partners and would enjoy the extra person to converse with.

So a few years ago I aquired a Tasuki x Nuriko doujinshi. I've been meaning to translate it but I've never really gotten around to it until now. The doujin, titled "Mutual Love," was released in 1996 drawn by Yaeko Fujino and Runako Kosugi. At long last I translated the three stories drawn by Yaeko Fujino.
