“I am but paper. Brittle and thin. I am held up to the sun, and it shines right through me. I get written on, and I can never be used again. These scratches are a history. They’re a story. They tell things for others to read, but they only see the words, and not what the words are written upon. I am but paper, and though there are many like me, none are exactly the same. I am parched parchment. I have lines. I have holes. Get me wet, and I melt. Light me on fire, and I burn. Take me in hardened hands, and I crumple. I tear. I am but paper. Brittle and thin.” ― T.J. Klune, The House in the Cerulean Sea.

Keep cracking open TJ Klune books when feeling incredibly vulnerable and effectively handing him my whole heart with complete trust and then getting to the end of the book and it being so so worth it

I love the House in the Cerulean sea so much. I love it because I see myself in Linus. I see who I’ve been, who I am, who I easily could’ve been if some small decisions hadn’t been made in my life not all that long ago. As someone who struggles with his weight and loving himself it felt really good to have a character like me in that struggle, who comes to love himself as he is and have others around him remind him that they love him exactly as he is and that he doesn’t have to change to be beautiful and to be worthy of being loved.
One of the themes that really stuck with me was that to be loved is to be changed, and boy is Linus changed. I remember reading this one bit, I still need to find the actual context, but Linus told a little white lie to I think Lucy and thought really nothing of it; and I remember thinking, “yeah lying can be a good thing sometimes, this is one of those times” or something vaguely like that, and then a second later realizing- “wait- he lied, Linus Baker told a lie! The Linus Baker who, in the beginning, mentioned how even the idea of telling even just a white lie made him practically sick” and just being in awe of the character development he’d experienced already and how he’d been changed by those around him for the better. Changed to move away from those harsh lessons of morality imparted by the same mother who basically told him he was worthless. He thrives on Marsyas.

Everyone loses their way at some point, and it’s not just because of their mistakes or the decisions they make. It’s because they’re horribly, wonderfully human.

wanna read romantic fiction but you're sick and tired of the focus on physical attraction??? not to worry!! please!!! talk about tj klune!! I'm begging you!
The House in the Cerulean Sea and Under the Whispering Door aren't just found family; it's the way Klune builds up the bond. it isn't entirely physical; it's through experiences together and finding common ground and talking and genuinely enjoying each others' company. the sex thing comes later. hell, anything physical, a hug, or whatever, is just that! a hug! it's so sweet and warms you up because it's a hug!! the point isn't physical attraction or whatever the fuck!! it's a side note!! I don't care as much about the story or Klune's character arcs, which are also pretty good, as much as i do about how he writes romance. it's purely that; romance. a bond. a fondness.

It's the little things, I expect. Little treasures we find without knowing their origin. And they come when we least expect them. It's beautiful, when you think about it.

I find it weird when people who have only read like House in the Cerulean Sea and Under the Whispering Door talk about TJ Klune's books and how wholesome and sweet and family friendly his books are 😂

The one thing I’ve learned about being human is that we can’t do this alone. When we’re lost, we need help to find our way again.

T J Klune - The House in the Cerulean Sea
This felt like a children's book of the sort written in the first half of the 20th century, but with rather queerer romances. It's light and readable, with an interesting mix of magical creatures but with a cartoonish feel that made me struggle to suspend my disbelief.
The two main settings are a dystopian government organisation with grim offices in a city where it rains all the time, and an idyllic island where it is mostly sunny and children and adults have outdoor adventures when not at school. (The British Empire overtones of wearing khaki explorer's outfits and pretending you're on an island with cannibals are never addressed.)
Many of the characters have had tragic backstories, but the difficulties encountered in the book are overcome pretty easily, and those with power all back down when stood up to, instead of using that power to retaliate and ruin people's lives. Some threats are made, but these seem to be forgotten about when the time comes to act on them.
There's also the question of 'if magic is so powerful, why are the magical people not in charge?', but this is a common flaw in magical settings, so is a fairly minor quibble.
