tragedy is some of the oldest and most iconic literature, drama, and film there is. i feel like black trauma discourse (and its cousin queer trauma or whatever) is just people chastising black filmmakers, playwrights, etc for making the same kind of tragic (or historical/topical) stories that get lauded when white men make them. stories that everyone has been telling since the beginning of time…..its very annoying. and imo it feels like people who do this don’t read books especially not classics

Fun Fact about wolf-hunting is that often hunters WOULD kill all the wolves in a pack but one, and they’d get that one with a tracker so that if/when it joined a new pack, they could hunt THAT pack down. Rinse and repeat and that one wolf has no idea why all of its packs keep dying horrifically. They’re called Judas wolves. Idk if you want to do anything with that but I saw your post about the one wolf survivor project and wanted to share.

Chapter 144 Notes; Love, longing and Lightning...near the end of days.

In this chapter, we get some more personal content and we get some great character development.

Kato also drives it home that the BIG END is coming. The kids are all reminiscing about the last time they had a meal together. In the woods camping. Remembering the good times helps bring them a strong sense of togetherness.

The adults meanwhile eat at a separate table. Shura equates the meal to the last supper, meaning they are preparing to sacrifice themselves to save humanity.

And of course, she has regrets. Shura just got a new lease on life, only to have that life stolen from her. She won't get a chance to be married, nor will she have children. It's bothering her.

One thing I gleaned from this discussion, is how little Shura knows about Neuhaus even though they were both True Cross Academy teachers. She didn't know that his wife was killed during the Blue Knight. Neuhaus is willing to die. He wants to be reunited with his wife.

Lucy meanwhile, has been married and had a bunch of kids, grandchildren and grandkids. And the woman is tired. She's worn out from all of that family and all of those kids. When she dies, Lucy wants a new life and to move on.

However according to her relative from the Taiwan Branch. Liu. She would have a hard time dying because her familiar keeps her alive. This is why she survived that mortal wound during the previous battle. For some reason, this tidbit will become an important narrative element.

After all, the Illuminati is always on the lookout for a resilient body to house a demon king. I wonder if an exorcist can willingly give up a body and still have their spirit move on?

The next exorcist is Liu. He has no wishes for children or family. This is a plot point that may prove significant. This is a manga based on family and its strengths. So...what does this mean? Or is it nothing?

Osceola is just a sweet, gentle giant of a man. His marriage didn't work out when he was young, but he has no regrets. He had a chance to raise/mentor Lightning. And that weirdo is like a son to him.

Lightning is very much like Shiro in some ways. He has difficulty showing emotions and possibly has a demon-like heart. He's also incredibly smart and most likely had issues communicating with normal humans. But like Mephisto said...nurturing, love and empathy can stop a demon heart from becoming monstrous.

Osceola taught Lightning how to love Assiah and all of the things in it. Just like Shiro learned to love Rin and Yukio, Osceola found meaning in his life. Lightning like Rin finds a balance within his demon heart.

Shura then takes a moment to consider Osceola's words. She's spent her short life as a mentor to Rin and Yukio. She loves the boys. Maybe that's enough for her too. Maybe.

But she still has work to do...because Yukio....

Getting back to the kids, they aren't focusing on death but life. Instead of the end, they all focus on normal things they will do once the battle is over. Shima, meanwhile, announces that he will be a pop idol.

What makes this so worrying? In the future, we see, Shima as a pop idol and all the other exorcists are nowhere to be found. Is Shima the only survivor? Does he live because he's the double agent and saves himself? Is he like the Judas character in this Last Supper analogy?

Speaking of regrets. We have Shiemi an entire year older. She's finally caught up to everyone and still refuses to tell Rin how she feels. Shiemi for shit's sake....use your words..!!!!

On to the bad guys

They're setting up camp in Mordor...I mean...Satan's heart. The bad demon kings have all survived, and Homaire has also survived. Astatroth was late to the party, he's got a human body but no class and no idea what's going on. (I swear this guy smells like Cheetos and farts.)

Lucifer is like...father's ego is dead. So sad, anyway...his heart is still intact. Satan's power is taking over Assiah, and I guess a slimey mudhole, combined with fire and brimstone is paradise to demons or something?

They proceed to give a detailed description of the different sections of the lair. Luckily, Lightning is there, spying like a pro. He distracts them with sylphs and then uses a ghost to possess an Illuminati guard. Very slick.

Lightning had a great one-liner too. ( I was having a shitty day at work...and yes. That's a mood.) The guy loves a challenge and is a bit of a masochist. Well, okay...

Oh and one more thing.

Wind Aspect: Manipulates air for various usages. His wind control is extremely limited in dry climates only able to use his inner aether. If under too much strain, or sleep-deprived his ability to formulate or spin the wind into his favor can backfire or slack. Most wind-maneuvers he operates, will wound him with recoil-damage, having to bind himself to the same fate. Flight: Using his wind-magic, can fly, levitate, glide to a degree but at the accost of intense concentration, focus, and stamina. He must be well-nourished and healthy, otherwise could plummet to his death. Current-Change: Can localize the change of wind towards his favor or direction freely. If the breeze is coming from the West, he can change it to the East, locally, etc. Insinuation: By funneling wind build up in often scoundrel favored tight-clothing and apparel he wears, Judas can trap air and save it, or balloon himself before blows to absorb impacts, or use that build-up like a leaf-blower to unleash powerful torrent-gusts. Kamikaze Attachment: A particular aetherial made wire that comes laced from his heart linked between an advisory. He can detonate this between them. Activating this lethal-technique, is extremely life-threatening and at the very-most, will cut about Five Years off his lifespan. Howling Dirks: Gyrating-high pressured razor-winds he can hurl projectiles (knives) at velocities that are equivalent to high-pressured bullets. Tornado Fists: Can form intense wind around his fists to forearms, that will rip at his own skin; until bone, but allow him to deliver devastating blows. Duplication: Instantly forges identical knives-sized objects or smaller up to one-three but only per a day. Due to his Crest often concealed underneath gloves. i like this first pairing of kori and jaime and gar and raven against brother blood and damian and dick against slade bc it feels really personal and also fair.

final thoughts:

this movie was a bit much for me on sexual innuendos and references, but most of it was plot relevant. i love to see dickory so im good with that. animation was good. characters were good. had to warm up to gar but that's okay.

The rape conviction of movie producer Harvey Weinstein has been overturned by New York's highest court.

The New York Court of Appeals, in a scathing 4-3 opinion, overturned Weinstein's conviction on sex crimes against three women, finding the trial judge "erroneously admitted testimony of uncharged, alleged prior sexual acts against persons other than the complainants of the underlying crimes."

The court said that testimony "served no material non-propensity purpose" and "portrayed defendant in a highly prejudicial light."

Weinstein spokesperson Juda Engelmayer told ABC News, "We are happily surprised and we are studying the ruling."

The Weinstein team, which was eagerly awaiting a ruling, was not expecting it to be in Weinstein's favor after a succession of rulings in different courts all went against Weinstein.

Weinstein was also convicted of sex offenses in Los Angeles and sentenced to 16 years in prison there.

Because Weinstein is already convicted in California, he will not be released, but instead transferred to the custody of prison authorities in California.

Weinstein, 72, was a well-known, powerful man within the entertainment industry and prosecutors said he abused his power to take advantage of aspiring female actors, like the alleged victims, to coerce them into unwanted sexual encounters. According to the prosecution, the quid pro quo of assisting them with their careers in exchange for sexual favors on demand was both common behavior and a well-known secret throughout the film industry.

An explosive New York Times article in October 2017 reported Weinstein had reached at least eight settlements with women who accused him of sexual misconduct over decades. The story, which featured actress Ashley Judd publicly accusing Weinstein of propositioning her in 1997, sparked an avalanche of accusations from women who came forward with similar accounts and largely kicked off the #MeToo movement, targeting prominent celebrities for sexual misconduct.

Weinstein was arrested on May 25, 2018, and charged with first- and third-degree rape for one victim, and first-degree criminal sex act for another woman. He was found guilty in February 2020 of two felonies -- criminal sexual assault and third-degree rape -- but acquitted of the two most serious charges -- predatory sexual assault. He was also acquitted of first-degree rape.

Prosecutors said the testimony of women other than those whose claims formed the basis of the criminal charges spoke to Weinstein's state of mind to use forcible compulsion. The majority opinion, however, said that eviscerated the time-tested rule against propensity evidence, "which, in criminal cases, serves as a judicial bulwark against a guilty verdict based on supposition rather than proof."

The Manhattan district attorney's office said it will retry Weinstein should the alleged victims be willing to come forward again.

"We will do everything in our power to retry this case, and remain steadfast in our commitment to survivors of sexual assault," a spokeswoman for Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg said in a statement.

Attorney Douglas H. Wigdor, who has represented eight alleged Weinstein victims, including two of the Molineux witnesses -- those not pertaining to the crimes charged -- at the New York criminal trial, said in a statement: "Today’s decision is a major step back in holding those accountable for acts of sexual violence. Courts routinely admit evidence of other uncharged acts where they assist juries in understanding issues concerning the intent, modus operandi or scheme of the defendant."

He continued, "The jury was instructed on the relevance of this testimony and overturning the verdict is tragic in that it will require the victims to endure yet another trial."

Lindsay Goldbrum, who represents six Weinstein accusers, including Taralê Wulff, one of the Molineux witnesses to testify about being sexually assaulted by Weinstein during his criminal trial in New York, said in a statement: "This ruling is a leap backward for the rule of law. In New York, Molineux witnesses play a critical role in establishing a defendant’s common scheme or plan to commit alleged crimes. When a defendant is accused of being a sexual predator, especially one as powerful as Weinstein, the testimony of Molineux witnesses is crucial to disproving the defense that sexual encounters were consensual."

The Court of Appeals decided the evidence of uncharged crimes allowed at trial "was unnecessary" to establish Weinstein's intent and "served only to establish defendant's propensity to commit the crimes charged."

The opinion also said the trial judge, James Burke, abused his discretion when he allowed Weinstein to be cross-examined about the uncharged conduct, ruling it "served no purpose other than to display for the jury defendant's loathsome character."
