This is Spaceghost! So-called because he needed to be quickly and easily addressed as an emergent issue for those with the displeasure of meeting him. The device he created appears to anchor his consciousness (and part of his physical body) to an extradimensional superposition.

(Lore on the scene ripper under the cut)

The scene-ripper (a play on seam ripper, since the blade seems to be fashioned after one) can tear a hole in reality. It can alter the structure of a reality, or simply traverse through it to a more desirable universal position depending on the dexterity and control of the operator (so pilot dib).

He made the device while trapped in a nightmare dimension, as no one was there to help him escape it. It was more out of desperation. The scope was useless on its own; he needed to find a way to control the jumps... so he had to work with what he had at his disposal. Which was, luckily or unluckily, a world full of fucked up impossible technology.

He was trapped there for a long time, being hunted down and tortured intermittently while trying to engineer the scene ripper. His work was made easier by the fact he wasn't the only one wanting to leave. Most of the work was done for him, he just needed to understand it and apply it. And scavenge all the parts... and eventually use untested technology on himself.

Point of no return shit was easier to fall into than to step into. It was a lot like putting his arm in a nuclear generator surrounded by a bear trap. When he was able to check on the status of his arm, he found the matter of his hand to be inscrutable. There was a void where his wrist should have been visible on the underside of the gauntlet and a sharp blade manifesting from the darkness. He could no longer remove it... but it did work.

The scope itself also received upgrades more closely tying its functionality to the ripper and operator, but none so costly as that of the gauntlet.

Anyway, here’s my attempt at a DC!AU drabble

“Does anyone know where I can find some cassette tapes?”

This question got the attention of everyone at the table. “What like for music?” asked Wally.

Gawain nodded. “Yeah.”

Wally smirked. “Not a fan of CD’s?”

Gawain made an odd staticky huff. “Hey! I’ve been keeping up with technology! Besides, it’s not for me. Arthur said he’d like some cassettes for Christmas.”

“That…actually makes less sense,” said Shayera. “Wouldn’t he rather have audio files? Maybe one of those storage units for them? I think they’re called Zunes?”

Wally snorted in a vain attempt to keep a laugh in while Gawain shook his head. “Yeah, I can see why you’d think that, but it’s for his van. He insists on keeping the parts all original, and it’s old enough that it uses a tape deck. Also, apparently switching it out with a CD player would be really troublesome for some reason. I think it has to do with aesthetic? Actually, it doesn’t even have to be a cassette with a recording. Arthur and his partners sometimes will record songs that they come up with.”

Wally grinned. “You have gotta bring some of those in some time.”

Gawain nodded. “Sure, after I get Arthur some more cassettes.”

“What about that shopping website?” asked Shayera. “What was it called again? I want to say it had something to do with Diana.”

Wally snorted. “It’s called Amazon. After the river. Diana decided not to raise a stink about it.”

“That’s kind of a last ditch thing,” explained Gawain. “It only has blank tapes from what I can see. Ebay’s also an option, but I’m a bit nervous since I won’t be able to inspect the cassettes before I buy them. There are all sorts of horror stories of getting something completely different than what you ordered.”

“Do you know any other ghosts who might have some on hand?” asked Shayera.

Gawain shook his head. “Nah, I checked that already. They’re either from the wrong time or weren’t interested in collecting cassettes.”

“You could try a flea market,” commented Wally. “You can find anything there. I’ve seen all sorts of old VHS tapes whenever I go to them. I bet they’d have old cassettes too. Maybe a cassette player too if you wanna listen to ‘em.”

“I have one of those already,” said Gawain. “But I guess a flea market is my best bet. I can probably try a few if I need too.”

Arthur was pleased to get a Weird Al and a Queen cassette for Christmas. Vivi and Mystery got lots of food. Lewis got some gourmet ingredients. Gawain considered it a victory.
