This is a cursed suggestion but have you thought about doing a season on 50 shades of grey? It is a twilight fanfic and has a book with the female character and a book with the male character just like twilight/midnight sun.
It’s super cursed but it could be fun to do like 3 or 4 episodes
(Also side not thank you for making this podcast when I’m lonely I listen to an episode and it feels like I’m hanging out with my friends and I don’t feel so lonely anymore)
G has actually read one of EL James’ twilight fanfictions (not what 50 shades was based off of, but a different one) and done some hilarious commentary on it. but as far as reading fifty shades goes?????? uhhhhhh idk about all that LMFAO. I have such low tolerance for bad smut and have no desire to read whatever 50 shades has to offer 😩 i’m SO tickled that we’re able to keep you company though 🥺 that gets me so weepy and happy all at once🤧 —shannon
you're speaking my LANGUAGE!! I did mention Grey on the podcast at least once (in, I think, Episode 0?) and it won't be a close read like season 1 of 3B1P, but I have in fact proposed an EL James one-off special episode that would put her work under a microscope like a phase of mitosis. together we can make it happen (by bullying shannon) —G
ps you can find my sporking of EL James' lost masterpiece Safe Haven here!

Sorry if this is a dumb question but what does spork mean? 😂😂
not a dumb question at all! Sporking is the fandom practice of brutally mocking a bad fanfiction, usually in great detail so that the commentary itself is basically its own work (think Mystery Science Theatre 3000.) it originally just referred to fanworks, but in recent years I've seen people (like the prev anon) begin using it to refer to mocking original works, too.

you have every reason to believe that the universe hates your guts. like one, the cocky know-it-all from your highschool (alternatively called jay park) started working at the café in front of your grandparents’ old flower shop. two, said cocky know-it-all appeared on the shop’s doorstep asking for a little help regarding a mutual, lovesick friend; and three, the chain of events following the second reason may have led you to reevaluate your knowledge on the definition of falling in love.

— EXCERPT !
“What the hell are you doing here?” If stares could kill, Jay Park would’ve probably been tethering on the edge of death—but instead he looks straight back at you with a glare just as icy, just as unwavering. That fact alone makes your eye twitch. He looks somewhat out-of-place in this quaint little haven, combat boots standing out amongst white sneakers and leather sandals and the somber tones of his attire stark against the creams and beige and pastel blues all blurring behind him like watercolor.
You blink slowly. You’ve seen his face one too many times today; if you look at him any more than you already have you might just have to gauge your eyes out with a spork.
“What, am I not allowed here anymore?” His lips tug into a scowl, and you wonder why half the school is hung up on him. Is it the hair?
“No, but you should be.” You lean on the counter, pointing at his chest, and he gazes at you like you insulted his family, “you and that godforsaken sweater of yours are a hazard to society.”
“What’re you gonna do, put up a sign for me to read?”
“You can read?”
At that moment, you perceive a frail woman around her seventies step behind the blond carrying a bunch of daffodils in her palms; a regular, or a friend of your grandfather’s? She meets your gaze and sends out a gentle smile, take your time, darling. You flick your gaze from her to Jay, raising a brow. “Listen, Park, unless you’re here to purchase anything, I suggest you haul your ass out that door. I don’t have time for your middle-school insults—”
Abruptly, Jay breaks away; it takes him less than a second to scan the nearby shelves (populated with succulents in ceramic pots and ferns spilling down the stands) and it takes him less than ten seconds to shove the first thing that catches his attention into your arms: a bouquet of roses. He plants his palms onto the marble surface of the counter and leans in close, displeasure written into his every feature, eyes narrowing slightly and you want nothing more than to smother his face with Ni-ki’s weird glitter concoction and—
He smells like lavender. That and he has tiny freckles splayed across his cheeks like scattered stars. You realize you’ve grown quiet.
Goddammit.
“So,” he huffs, quirking his head sidewards as exasperation weaves itself into his syllables. “Will you talk with me now?”

Pure As Mud : Chapter 7
Previous Chapter
Chapter Masterpost
Summary : Dan Howell is muggleborn, Phil Lester is a pure blood. Phil dreams of Slytherin, Dan’s just happy to be a wizard. When conflict arises the boys are broken apart, only to come back together as prefects years later. Can they repair the bond their younger selves broke?
Author’s notes : Hello! We're getting near the end of this fic!!!! I'm really enjoying writing it and I hope you're enjoying reading it! I update every Saturday. Ok enjoy!
AO3 Link
“FUCKING FINALLY!” Sam whooped. Dan buried his head in Phil’s shoulder to hide the red hot flush of his cheeks. Phil was smirking, “What did he talk about me often?” He asked with an evil grin. Dan groaned, “Sam don’t you fucking-” he started but Phil cut him off with a short peck. “He did not shut up!” Sam groaned. Phil laughed loudly. Dan sighed heavily but Phil shut him up by kissing him on the cheek. Sam rolled his eyes. “You two are going to be disgusting aren’t you?” Dan poked out his tongue at his best friend. “Definitely,” Phil nodded. There was a pause, “Fine, but as long as there’s no extreme making out of fucking in our dormitory I’m good.” They both shoved him, causing him to fall backwards onto the green couch behind him.
~-~-~
Phil didn’t think there would ever be a time he didn’t want Dan’s hand to be encased in his. They fit together perfectly. Dan’s hand was soft and small, but it gripped onto his like it might disappear if he let go. “The library’s quiet for a Monday,” Dan commented idly, his head resting against Phil’s shoulder. “Mmmhmm,” Phil mumbled whilst reading ‘Quidditch Through the Ages'. A comfortable silence fell between them. From the early 1100s, Snidget hunting had been popular among many witches and wizards. Suddenly Dan spoke up, “Be my boyfriend?” He asked. Phil glanced up from the book in shock, “Aren’t we already?” He asked. Dan shrugged, “Well no not officially.” “We told Sam.” “But we never agreed.” Dan prompted. “Of course I’ll be your boyfriend Daniel Howell.” Phil smiled. Dan grinned before pecking him on the lips and returning to reading a book on Herbology. Someone walked around the corner. “WHY DO I NOT KNOW ABOUT THIS!” The familiar voice of Phil’s best friend shrieked. Madame Pince marched over, “All three of you out!” She growled. They walked out Lana’s expression flitting between utter joy and annoyance. Phil cut her off before she could say anything, “We only technically just made it official before you bite our heads off.” She opened and shut her mouth like a goldfish before saying, “I thought after months of dealing with your lovesickness I would at least know straight away.” She glared at him.   Phil rolled his eyes, “Technically you are finding out straight away.” He pointed out. “Does Sam know?” She asked. At their hesitant expressions she gasped, “He does!” “You were in a class!” Phil exclaimed. “It was cancelled!” “How was I meant to know that?” he asked and she hesitated. There was a long pause in which she looked at both of them, “You’re dating?” She asked. They nodded. “Prove it.” Phil rolled his eyes and kissed Dan. Lips soft against his own. They pressed back gently. Lana screamed like a lunatic.
~-~-~
“I have to go back to my dormitory.” Dan mumbled into Phil’s neck where he was lying. Phil grumbled, “Noooo why.” Dan laughed, the breath tickling Phil’s neck. Before removing himself from the comfortable position, taking Phil’s warmth with him. He quickly leaned down onto Phil, lips brushing his gently. Phil pulled Dan onto him so that their lips collided fully. Dan tasted like the sugar quill he had just eaten. Their lips moved in sync against each other, neither really wanting to stop. Dan pulled away, leaning his forehead against Phil’s, “I really have to go.” He said before pecking Phil once more on the lips. Phil sighed as the common room door swung shut behind him.
Sally sat on the edge of his bed. Phil held the letter in his hands. They had actually replied. He wasn’t sure which was worse. Not replying or replying. He thought about happy things, You have been dating Dan for three days. You are going to show Sam and Lana 'Lady and the Tramp' They’re going to love it.
The letter trembled in his hands as he ripped it open.
~-~-~
Dan was settled into bed with a book when Sam came in from the common room. “It’s about two hours too early for you,” Dan mumbled not looking up from his book. Sam hummed in agreement, “You have a boyfriend who needs you.” Dan looked up from the book in shock to see Phil with tear stains down his face and crooked glasses. “Phil?” He asked jumping out of bed. Phil slipped himself into Dan’s arms. Tears fell from Phil’s eyes, dampening Dan’s pyjama top. Dan couldn’t have cared less. “What’s wrong Phil?” He gently stroked his boyfriend’s messy hair. Sam left the room. Phil’s glasses were fogging up and Dan removed them cleaning them with the hem of his shirt. Phil gulped, “L-letter.” He mumbled against Dan’s torso. “Shh, shh, it’s ok. Just breathe and then tell me ok?” Dan pulled Phil closer to his chest so that they were so close it was almost impossible to tell where one boy ended and the other began. After a few minutes of sitting in silence Phil took a deep breath. “I got a letter from my parents.” He looked up, tear filled eyes locking with Dan’s. Dan placed Phil's glasses carefully on his face. “What did it say?” He asked gently. Phil squeezed his eyes shut, “They said that it would be best if I didn’t come home for Christmas because-” His voice broke and Dan placed a gentle kiss on his forehead. “Because my grandparents were coming to our house. We haven’t seen them since I was ten.” Phil gulped. Dan hugged Phil tight to his chest, he could feel the sobs shaking in Phil’s chest against him. “It’s ok.” He mumbled. A pathetic attempt but all he could do. Phil laughed through a sob, “I’m ridiculous.” “No you’re not.” Dan pulled Phil away so that he was facing him, “You are the strongest person I know. This is awful of your parents to do. You are not ridiculous.” Phil pecked him on the lips, wet with tears, “You’re the best boyfriend.” He gulped. “Come to my house for Christmas.” Dan blurted out. Phil’s face lit up like a Christmas tree. “R-really?” He asked. “Of course you spork.” Dan smirked, Phil pressed their lips together gently. Dan pulled him to the back of the bed, “Come on, you can sleep in here.” He said gently.
~-~-~
He smiled at his boyfriend, snoring softly against his chest. Sam walked in and rolled his eyes gently. “You’re both going to be so sappy honestly.” He groaned, but Dan could tell it was light hearted. Dan removed Phil’s glasses gently, careful not to wake him up. A gentle kiss was pressed to Phil’s head before Dan was fast asleep.
~-~-~
Dan walked back to the room after seeing Phil out. When approaching his common room he heard an angry conversation that caused him to halt in his tracks.
“Does it not bother you that you wake up and Dan has a boy in his bed?” Damien from their dormitory hissed. “Why should it? They are dating after all!” Sam replied, venom lacing his words. There was a groan, “That’s the thing. They’re two boys.” “Yes they are well spotted,” Sam replied sarcastically. Dan leaned his back against the wall. “You don’t care?” Damien asked in shock. “Why the fuck would I care?” Sam spat, “They are in love and that’s all that fucking matters.” There was a long pause before Damien spoke again, “I’m not comfortable with it.” “Then go fucking talk to Professor Slughorn about moving dormitories.” Dan jumped back as Damien stormed out of the room. They locked eye contact and a split second of fear flashed across Damien’s eyes before being replaced by calm. “Hey Dan how are you?” He asked. Dan glared back at him, “I’ve had better days, when people aren’t concerned with my sexuality behind my back.” He sneered. Damien’s cool expression slipped away. “I-I uh.” He stammered “Don’t bother.” Dan waved him off, entering the dormitory to see Sam packing up Damien’s stuff. They shared a knowing look.
~-~-~
Empty classrooms had become Dan and Phil’s safe haven. No one to judge them. No one to interrupt them. No one else. They had only just shut the door before Dan launching himself onto Phil. They stumbled backwards until Dan was against a wall. Phil felt his mind spin the way it always did when Dan kissed him. Nothing else seemed to matter except the lips attached to his own. His hands threaded their way through the curls of Dan’s hair. Pushing him against the wall. Dan gasped beneath him.
They pulled away for air, foreheads resting against each others. “You’re beautiful.” Phil smiled. Dan rolled his eyes, “Shut up and kiss me.” He said pulling their lips together once again. Phil pulled away from Dan’s lips trailing down his jaw, he grinned as a gasp escaped Dan’s lips. He gently kissed the tender skin under Dan’s chin. Dan grabbed him by the jaw and pulled him up to face him, brown eyes warm against Phil’s. “You are such a tease.” Dan murmured quickly before their lips were against each other again. Phil gasped as Dan bit down on his bottom lip pulling his mouth open. Tongue searching the new territory. There was a click and then an awkward cough. Phil leapt away from Dan faster than you could blink but definitely not fast enough. “I believe I’m interrupting, apologies boys.” Mr Drimsworth smirked at them. Phil turned to Dan, his lips were slightly swollen and his eyes were wide but still full of joy. It was a good look on him. Dan fidgeted with his hands avoiding eye contact with both of them. Phil realised he would have to say something. He felt his cheeks heat up. “Oh… er…no sorry sir.” Phil flushed. Mr Drimsworth laughed softly, “Don’t worry. As long as you were only planning on making out that is.” He smiled. Dan broke into a coughing fit. Phil buried his head in his hands. He could just hear Dan assure Professor Drimsworth that “No, no way. I’m- we’re fifteen sir.. It’s… no no.” Professor Drimsworth laughed, “I believe you Dan.” Phil opened his eyes. “In all honesty I’m glad you both finally realised.” He smiled at them. Both of their jaws dropped open. “W-w-what do you mean?” Dan spluttered. “I overheard your boggart Mr Howell.” He said with an eyebrow raise. “Perhaps you should explain it to Mr Lester before you,” he paused with a grin, “resume.” He then picked up a stack of papers from the desk and left the room. Phil waited patiently while Dan fidgeted. Eventually he couldn’t take it anymore, “I was your boggart.” Dan nodded. “Why?” Phil added. There was a long pause, “I thought you deserved better than me and that I was ruining your life.” Phil watched Dan physically take a deep breath. “My biggest fear was you rejecting me. Or h-hating me…” Dan looked down at the floor and Phil walked up to him. Tipping his face up to look at him. “I would never.” He kissed Dan gently, lips brushing like promises. “Care to finish?” Dan asked with a grin. “Of course.” Phil barely replied before Dan’s lips were pressed against his harder this time. Dan’s hands were threaded through his hair and he wasn’t sure he’d ever wanted anything more.
~-~-~
“Have you said it yet?” Sam asked with a grin. “Really wouldn’t be any of your business.” He smirked, “So that’s a no?” Dan poked his tongue out but sighed as he flopped onto the bench of the Great Hall. Piling his plate with sandwiches and salad. “Did you at least have fun?” Sam asked mischievously. Dan flushed red, “We didn’t do anything.” “Yeah that’s why you came back with swollen lips and an expression of pure joy.” “We just kissed.” Sam shook his head, “Don’t lie to me, you made out and you loved it.” Dan considered lying, but decided against it, “Yeah we did.” Sam laughed so loudly that Dan slapped a hand over his friend’s mouth. “Professor Drimsworth walked in on us.” Sam’s jaw dropped open. “No way!” He gasped, on the verge of laughing. Dan rolled his eyes, “Yes and we have Defence now and I want to sink into a hole.” Sam snickered.
~-~-~
Mr Drimsworth winked at Dan as he entered the class, causing Dan’s face to burn red hot and Sam lapsed into a fit of laughter. As they worked on their theory Mr Drimsworth walked around the class. As he came to Dan he bent down, “What did Phil say?” He asked with a knowing smile. Dan blushed at the awkwardness of the situation but replied, “He said he would never.” “Good.” Professor Drimsworth winked again before moving on to the next person.
~-~-~
Sam, Lana, Phil and Dan were all studying in the library. The same spot where Phil had agreed to be Dan’s boyfriend officially. Dan grinned at the memory.   Phil seemed to be having the same thought because they locked eye contact. A smile was shared. Lana groaned, “You two are sickeningly adorable.” Sam laughed in agreement before returning to the huge Potions essay they had due. Phil scooted his chair over to Dan, looking so ridiculous Dan couldn’t help but giggle under his breath. “I heard Professor Drimsworth spoke to you?” He grinned.
Dan glared at Sam, “Wonder who told you that?” Sam shrugged but gave him an evil grin. “So?” Phil prompted, blue eyes glittering behind his glasses. Dan sighed, “He just asked what you said. It was nothing, just embarrassing to talk about our relationship with a teacher.” Phil nodded. Leaning his head against Dan’s shoulder. “You got that one wrong by the way.” He said pointing to a star.
~-~-~
The Lady and Tramp were eating spaghetti. This had always been Dan’s favourite part. Phil was cuddled next to him and Sam and Lana were sitting on cushions, mouths open in awe. “This is my favourite part,” Phil whispered to Dan. Dan looked up at him, blue eyes glowing in the light of the movie screen. “You’re cute.” He whispered. Phil kissed him on the nose. “You are too.”
There was a pause where they turned back to the movie before Lana screamed in excitement. “Lady and the Tramp!” She gasped, all three boys turned to stare at her, “I get it now!” At their blank stares she continued, “Your Patronuses,” she said pointing to Dan and Phil, “They’re Lady and the Tramp.” Sam gasped and both Dan and Phil burst out laughing.
“We. Were. Waiting. For. That,” Phil gasped between laughs and Dan wasn’t sure he had ever loved him more. His tongue was poking between his teeth in that cute way it does. “Cast them.” Sam pleaded. Dan rolled his eyes but paused the movie anyway. Phil pecked him on the lips before closing his eyes. Dan didn’t even need to think anything except, Phil. “Expecto Patronum!” They cast at the same time, Lady and the Tramp emerging from their wands. Matching but also different in the most beautiful way.
They were Lady and the Tramp.

Battle Box Mission 1.2 Review
Tumblr media
Back again with another box review, this time is the big bad BATTLE BOX. Man, as I scoped this one out on their website I was salivating, seemed like so much cool stuff. Currin's videos of the past boxes looked awesome. so when the time was right I signed up. Battle Box has several different levels of subscription with different price ranges. I'll be reviewing the “Pro+” box for this one. Let's just start from the top down!
Tumblr media
The Gerber LMF II Infantry Survival knife...This thing is awesome. I've always wanted to get my hands on one. Getting it in this box made it even cooler. Now, this is a BIG knife. It's hard to tell from pictures online, but once you actually hold it you'll be surprised...”That's what he said”.
THE GOOD - Made in Portland Oregon USA, says right on the blade. The handle has three holes for lashing as a spear. The pommel is also made of steel and come to a point to be used as a glass breaker. 4.84″ Drop Point blade made of 420HC stainless steel. The handle is supposed to be insulated and fire-retardant. not sure I want to test that. The Sheath is belt loop and MOLLE compatible, it also features thigh straps and an integrated pull through sharpener. The Handle is comfortable in both forward and inverted grip.
THE BAD - ...it's a little heavy? but that’s normal for its intended purpose as a survival knife, as opposed to a self-defense knife.
THE UGLY - Not a damn thing, Its Design is simple, functional, and serious.
Tumblr media
Battle Box Single person tent. Pretty cool thing for a starter box. Gets you ready to get outside and adventure. Set up, is two tent poles and several stakes for the ground.
THE GOOD - It's light and small, easy to lash to a pack and carry. or just leave in your vehicle so you're ready to hit the road anytime. once you get used to it set up is relatively easy. I like the colour and aesthetics. Matches any kind of tactical gear you might have. Has the Battle Box logo printed on the rain fly. What you see in the picture is the outer layer which you can remove, most of the tent underneath is netting so you can be cooler on warm nights or just see the stars.
THE BAD - It's a tight fit. If you’re even a person of the average size you have to sort of slide in feet first. there's not enough room to crawl in and turn around, but this may be nothing new to people who use backpacking tents. in terms of length, it's fine, even for a tall person, but height and width are in short supply. If you’re the claustrophobic type this may not be your jam. May want to use the tent stakes included in the box, cause the ones that come with the tent kinda suck. They’re small, metal, and difficult to pull up from the ground.
THE UGLY - nothing much, I like it.
Tumblr media
Sawyer Picaridin Insect Repellant. Nothing more annoying than going on a camping trip, then spending most of your time swatting pests away from your face, eyes, and ears cause of that irritating buzzing noise...I HATE THEM SO MUCH. we’ll now you can make them regret ever being spawned! We’re just getting into summer now, so I haven,t been able to put this to the test yet, but I hear it's serious business.
Tumblr media
Camp Stove Set. Includes a two-piece housing, burner, cap, and two cups with handles, large and small. Also, comes with a carrying pouch and microfiber towel. This is not a propane stove...to be honestly I'm not even sure what its suppose to run on. There were no instructions. Seeing as the burner is a small cup I,m assuming its a liquid fuel like alcohol? I've never used one like this before. So I looked up the advantages of liquid fuel stoves: consistency of heat, fuel economy, cleaner burn, and easily measurable.
THE GOOD - It's light weight and packs up easily. comes with everything you need. I won't say its small though cause I’ve seen plenty of pocket stoves that are smaller even with a can of propane, like the one in the Camp Comfort box.
THE BAD - again there were no instructions it took me three attempts and some common sense to figure out how it assembled. I'm still not even sure I’ve got it right. Now, this type of stove may be familiar to other people but it was new to me, as I've used the propane camp stoves
THE UGLY - maybe it's just me but I hate the feel of it’s material and coating. A lot of camp cookware is made out of this stuff, but I hate it. I hate the way it feels in my hands. I hate the way its sounds when you grind the pieces together, and you have to assemble it.
Tumblr media
Self Reliance Outfitters Mini Inferno. This company is owned by Dave Canterbury, who use to co-host the Dual Survival TV show. These are highly flammable discs of tinder to help you start a fire in even wet conditions. Be sure to read the tin as there are some very specific instructions as to their use.
THE GOOD - These things are small and light. The container makes them easy to pack away in your gear. Definitely one of the more practical items in the box.
THE BAD - they don't seem to burn for too long. Now every time you try to start a fire there are a lot of factors that determine your success and most of it is individual effort put into preparation. So what happened could just be my fault. But on a camping trip, I used one of these to get a fire going and it just didn't burn long enough to get the twigs and split wood flakes going. I also don't think the tin is air tight enough. all the oils seem to have dried up out of mine. but that could be normal. I've had a better experience with those little one-inch fuel cubes.
Tumblr media
Light My Fire Camp Spork - pretty self-explanatory.
THE GOOD - It’s all inclusive, spoon, fork, knife, all in one piece. lightweight and easy to pack away.
THE BAD - it's a little flimsy. For eating MREs and light fare its fine, but for heavier pieces of meat probably not gonna cut it. I'm sure this product is just intended for light backpacking gear.
Tumblr media
Zippo Campfire Starter - Not much to say about this. It’s a disk of fire tinder. probably not something you would keep in your pack, it will jus crumble up, and be gone within 2-5 camping trips.  Cool to have none the less.
Tumblr media
Exotac Fire Sleeve - A protective sleeve meant to keep your lighter dry in rough conditions. Has loops for tying a lanyard, bright and visible, easy to find in your gear, or should you drop it somewhere.
Tumblr media
Murphy’s Mosquito Sticks Pack - Comes with a few incense and candles...you can tell this is a company from the south-east when they're so concerned about mosquitos lol. These are cool cause they're apparently made from natural ingredients, but they have a strong smell. Made everything in the box smell like ginger citrus. This will probably be good for family outings. keeping the bugs away from your eating space.
Tumblr media
Speed Cinch Stakes - These are actually one of the coolest and more useful items in the box. I big improvement over the stakes that usually come with tents. They make tie down quick and easy. I can see getting use out of these for many other things, not just tents. On a recent camping trip, I used them to hang a tarp over our tent for extra rain protection. their big size means they're easier to pull up from the ground, and clearly visible so you're not tripping over them.
Tumblr media
Final Thoughts - Also included in the box is a subscription to readyman.com. A website full of training videos for all kinds of useful skills, including self-defense, survival, and tactical thinking.
Overall this box is awesome, getting a tent and the LMF knife are highlights, some of the smaller items are great and practical too. For some people in some regions, the mosquito and pest repellant might not be so useful. I'd like to see the more expendable items replace by more permanent bits of gear. The price tag for Pro+ stings a bit, but if you do the math it’s a great value. So if I ignore the guilt of the price, I'm happy with the result.
Hey everyone thanks for reading. I’d like to do video reviews but I don’t currently have a camera set up to use. If you’d like to support the blog and see more reviews you can help us out on patreon!

Omg you sporked El james fic? did you ever read the twilight sporking
which twilight sporking? I feel like they were all the rage from like 2009—2016 or so. the only one I definitely remember reading was Dan Bergstein's Blogging Twilight on the sparknotes blog site.
if anyone's curious about what anon is referring to: yes I did indeed spork EL James' lesser-known fic Safe Haven and had an absolute blast doing it!
tbh I'm a massive hypocrite bc I'm lowkey against the concept of sporking in general, especially sporking fan creators. but EL James I make an exception for because she's way out of my scope to harm and also seems rather horrible

You, me and us
February 8, 2017
I was inspired to write a letter to my potential future partner/s in the style of this blog post I read. I’ve been thinking about doing something like this for a while. I’m drawing from past experiences and likely, but still vague, potential qualities. I guess it’s like a poetic CV for relationships.
You.
You’re different. You’ve probably always known this. It may bring you pride at times but loneliness at others. You may have been bullied for existing outside the spectrum of normal. Perhaps you looked unusual or spoke up when no one else did or liked something you ‘weren’t meant to’. Perhaps you didn’t know otherwise because, hun, you can’t be taught how to be. You just are. You don’t fit into boxes or societies standards. I love that. I really do. Ordinary is boring. Ordinary is overrated. Ordinary is greyscale and you are a rainbow. But, perhaps, you don’t see your value. Maybe, sometimes, you want to be someone else. Anyone but yourself. But, oh gods, please don’t be anyone else. Because you, my darling, are magnificent. Extraordinarily magnificent. And I am thankful for every day that you exist.
You’re a thinker. You think about everything. And, at times, nothing. You think about why the curtains were blue and witty comebacks long after the argument is over and what your profession in the middle ages would’ve been and how to casually slip nerdy references into conversations and how to solve world hunger and about the plot holes in movies. Sometimes you want nothing more than your brain to just shut the hell up. And sometimes you want your brain to think of just one useful thing. Thinking is good. It means you’re taking in information and processing it. It means you’re learning. And there’s nothing sexier than learning. Except teaching. You can get so carried away with thinking that sometimes you forget to speak so, my dear, do use your words.
You’re a dreamer. Maybe this is why you’re different. Few people can really think but fewer still can dream. You see things that others can’t. You want more than what others settle for. You imagine possibilities. You hope for them and, yet, you fear them. You dream of fighting, no, befriending dragons and of pirates on the high seas. You dream of your past, your present and your future. Sometimes you can get so caught up in your dreams that you forget to live. But, believe it or not, you can actually make your dreams come true. Okay, fine, you probably can’t make that dream where you won the hunger games by challenging Voldemort to a lightsabre battle come true. But there are certainly some dreams you can see through to reality. That is if you open your eyes.
Me.
I’m different too. I don’t subscribe to what I should be or should do. I, instead, gathered the skills to follow my passions and create my ideas. I design and I read and I write and I sing. I basically breathe wonder and imagination. I’m self-confidant, secure and have a solid base. This is a, surprisingly, rare find in people. Oh, sure, I might have the odd hiccup of anxiety but I’ve got it. I’ve got me. And I’ve got you. I feel deeply and I trust my instincts. I believe in myself and I believe in people. It pays off more often than not. I’m an open person who, in turn, is open to others. I’m non-judgemental and extremely perceptive. I guarantee you will never meet someone else like me. Oh and, please, don’t underestimate me. I will constantly surprise you.
I’m positive and solutions-focussed. I don’t give up or run for the hills when presented with a problem. I work with it, I overcome it and/or I make deals with it. I think outside of the box and, if there isn’t a path forward, I will make one. If I fail I will try again and, if I have to, again. I’m exceptionally curious and absorb information like a sponge. I don’t have all the answers so I ask lots of questions. I then communicate my findings with grand gestures, profound metaphors and vocal nuances. I can be strongly opinionated but moved by a good argument. I’m honest and speak from the heart. I have found out many things, young padawan, and I want us to exchange notes.
I’m warm and cosy. I embody what the Danish call hygge. I wanted to merge my inner and outer worlds so I manifested an aesthetic and a home. It’s like a haven where you can dock, recharge and set sail once more. I’ve always wanted to be that for my loved ones. That intimate and safe atmosphere. I will look at you, as if you were the brightest star in the sky, whilst you tell me your story. Your unfolding words, lines, on a page. I want you to leave nothing out. I’ll explore your colonies and continental divides as if you penned a map especially for me. I will hold you. You will hold me. And I will teach you how to hold yourself.
Us.
We spend time together. In summer we will picnic in the park. In autumn we will hold hands whilst gazing at the stars. In winter we will cuddle in blankets by the fireplace. In spring we will dance in the rain. We will have tea whilst discussing the meaning of life late into the night. We will cook whilst tipsy and singing Disney. We will read books, back to back, in bed. We will have the best sex. Like nothing you’ve ever known. We will go for walks to nowhere and everywhere. Collecting caches, Pokémon or zombies along the way. Yeah, of course, we’re up with the latest technologies. We experience different types of reality together. We will share in each other’s hobbies and grow each other’s minds.
We spend time apart. We are two separate people, not two parts of a whole. We have lives outside of each other and we live them. We have family and friends of whom we love. They provide us with differing outlets and opinions. We can’t get everything from each other. But, certainly, enough. More than enough. We, however, occasionally need breathing space. This is normal and we trust in each other. We communicate with each other. We make sure our needs are met.
We work with each other. We’re a partnership. We give and we take. One of us brings a spoon to the table and the other a fork. And, sometimes, we’ll both bring sporks. We have a connection and a chemistry. We light up when the other is in the room. We accept each other’s weaknesses and understand our vulnerabilities. We include each other in our thought processes, ideas and decisions. We talk to each other. We listen to each other. We bring out the best in each other. We care for each other. We love each other.

An Ideal Day in Bend, Oregon: TSLL’s Itinerary
With Labor Day weekend coming up, I know many Oregonians will be venturing to Bend for one last summer hurrah. As well, whenever you might have the opportunity to visit our central Oregon outdoor, foodie, health-focused, beer-making, dog-loving community haven, I wanted to share with you a simple list of ideas when you begin creating an itinerary.
While currently we are inundated with smoke from lightening caused forest fires and will most likely be for a few, if not more than a few, days, perusing through the many images I have captured over the past two years reminded me of the beauty that exists nearly everywhere I turn. Whether it is out on the water, sitting down for a cup of coffee, strolling along the paths at Drake Park, spending time viewing a small indie film in a boutique theater or savoring the delicious fare at the many locally owned, family run restaurants, some of which have been recognized by the James Beard association, there are many simple, beautiful and memorable ways to spend your time in my new hometown. And I am more than happy to share what I’ve discovered.
If I had to plan an ideal day in Bend, from beginning to end, sundown to beyond sunset, below are the twelve activities I would put on my itinerary. None of them are overly extravagant, but each are activities I appreciate having the opportunity to experience, visit, and/or savor in Bend.
Morning
1. A walk in nature with my boys
Nearly every day begins with a walk with my boys, Norman and Oscar. With nature just outside my backdoor, as a doggie mama I feel as though I am giving my dogs the best life I could possibly give them. Whether on a leash while walking multiple miles on preserved trails along a river or allowing them to be off-leash at designated expansive dog parks around Deschutes County, their smile when they see where we I am driving warms my heart.
While many people run, or bike here in Bend, walking has always been my preferred work-out of choice, and very rarely do I walk the same trail or path two days in a row. Here and here are two resources to find a trail or path that suits your taste and location in Central Oregon.
~View all of the images captured with #tsllmynorman and #tsllmyoscar while walking in #tsllbend on @thesimplyluxuriouslife‘s Instagram feed.
  2. Summer: Stand-Up Paddle Boarding with Norman (and sometimes Oscar); Winter: cross country skiing with both of my boys
Quite frequently this summer I found myself both walking early in the morning followed by a jaunt on the paddle board before the heat of the day set in. This pattern was partly prompted by  because Oscar is getting older and preferring to stay on solid ground, so I wanted to make sure he received his daily exercise with the walk, but also because I didn’t want to pass up the beautifully warm, yet still crisp, mornings on my board.
Norman has become quite the little SUP pup and hops on like a pro which makes it all the more exciting to get out onto the water (you can see all of our ventures on the water on Instagram with #tsllsup). If you are looking to rent a paddle board, you can pick one up at a handful of different locations, often right at the river: Tumalo Creek Paddle & Canoe, Parks & Rec rents at RiverBend Park and many more locations as well (click here for the entire list). And don’t forget to visit the high lakes with your board. Below is an image on the day of the Total Solar Eclipse on Hosmer Lake.
But summer doesn’t last all year and as many of you know, Bend is known for the snow and skiing on Mt. Bachelor. While I am not a down hill skier, I do love to take my dogs cross country skiing or go by myself at a handful of different parks along the Cascade Lakes Highway headed to Mt. Bachelor. Usually, I head up in the morning to make the most of the snow, and then return down the hill for a leisurely rest of the day. (Here is a list of cross country skiing destinations to check out.)
3. Breakfast and a Cuppa Tea/Coffee at a Bakery
After finishing the daily workout, on an ideal day, a stop into a local bakery is never a bad idea. With so many delicious bakeries to choose from (last summer I shared a post detailing a handful of the best bakeries in Bend based on my tastebuds’ first-hand experience), you will find something delicious to nibble on as well as scrumptious coffee (my favorite place for coffee is Backporch Coffee Roasters which was voted Best Coffee in Bend this year).  And for tea, many of the bakeries serve Metolius Artisan Tea which is local and offers a quality sipping experience
~shown above: Sparrow Bakery, the Village Baker~
~Backporch Coffee Roasters on Newport Market Ave.~
4. Visit a Farmers Market
Beginning in June and running through September and October (depending upon which market), the farmers markets in Bend are quite abundant as purveyors come from the Willamette Valley and across central and eastern Oregon to share their produce. You can view an abundance of images I captured this past summer at my three favorite spots in this post as well as discover how to make the most of your time at a farmers market.
My advice: arrive when they begin as the best produce goes quickly, but don’t worry, all of the produce is spectacular. And if you simply want fresh, local produce without having to go to one of the once-a-week markets, stop by Paradise Produce on Galveston on the west side.
5. Pop into a Book Shop
I adore bookshops, as I know many of TSLL readers do as well. Much like a big hug you can step into and find quiet refuge, visiting a locally owned bookshop is a sweet outing entirely by itself. Supporting independently owned bibliophile sanctuaries is vital, and while it can be tempting to go home and purchase the book from Amazon (I too am guilty of this from time to time), buying a book, sitting down and enjoying a hot cup of tea or coffee and making connections can go along way if we all did something to show our appreciation on a regular basis. Perhaps look at your purchase as a subscription or a form of mini rent to keep your favorite book destination open.
I was especially grateful when Roundabout Books opened less than a year ago in Northwest Bend and I had the opportunity to introduce readers to the owner in this post as well as share a few more pics from my many wanderings through the shelves.
Dudley’s Bookshop Cafe is also a wonderful, cozy bookstore located in its prime downtown location. With a comfy couch upon which I have sat more than a few times and enjoyed conversation and tea with a friend as well as a work room upstairs set amongst used books, the espresso is delicious, the treats are scrumptious, and you are centrally located to enjoy many other lovely boutiques while downtown.
6. Stop into Iron Horse Antiques
Don’t be fooled by the old, western exterior; Iron Horse Antiques is a treasure chest waiting for customers who have the patience and curiosity to step inside and find exactly what they didn’t know they wanted. I have stopped in a few times for props on projects, teapots for work or at home and while I do not spend more than $30 or $50 dollars, I always find something unique. Located just a block away from one of my favorite restaurants for dinner (shared below in #11), you’ll find Iron Horse Antiques in the Old Bend District. (If you’re viewing this post on Wednesday August 30th, check out TSLL’s IG Stories to see more video inside the shop.)
7. Enjoy a light, delicious lunch at Jackson’s Corner, Parilla, Spork, the Village Baker or Chow
Any one of these destinations will delight the foodie that resides within you. From classic American fare to globally-conscious cuisine, mouth-watering tacos and burritos and traditional sandwiches amped up with thoughtful flavorful details, no reservations are needed, just step inside and pick up, dine in or outside and enjoy a boost to carry you through the second half of your day.
~Spork‘s menu, located on Newport Ave on the west side~
~The Village Baker, located on both the west and east side, try their sandwiches. My favorite is the turkey with strawberry salsa.~
~Parilla’s beloved fish tacos – AAAAmmmazing; two locations – east and west~
~Jackson’s Corner: fresh bread (my favorite baguette in town), pizza (the thin, crust is just to my liking), classic American comfort food; two locations: east and west)~
8. Walk in Drake Park and the Old Bend District
If you’re downtown, be sure to stroll through Drake Park located along the Deschutes River and what is called Mirror Pond. In the fall, as you see below, the colors are exquisite, and as well in the spring with the copious amounts of maple and other deciduous trees full of blossoms.
  9. Enjoy an Afternoon Break at your vacation rental
If you’re anything like me, you will need some time to rest and recharge before finishing the day. With the many vacation rentals in Bend, enjoy the outdoors by simply stepping onto your porch, patio or out into the yard. I have a hammock in my backyard, so often in the afternoon I find myself taking a rest swinging out in the fresh air, listening to the birds.
  Evening
10. If staying in and cooking at home, visit Newport Market for your gourmet goods
The bounty of grocery stores and market in Bend for the small size of under 90,000 people is a food-lovers mecca. And while we do have Whole Foods, Trader Joe’s and Market of Choice as well as Locavore and finally the traditional Safeway, Albertsons and Fred Meyers, we also have something exclusively in Bend that you won’t find anywhere else (that’s redundant on purpose): Newport Market.
If you’ve ever been to New York City’s Upper West Side and stepped into Zabar’s, you will feel right at home at Newport Market. No, it isn’t a kosher deli, but it is small, the shelves are close together, and the selection is phenomenonal for the minimal space they inhabit. Yes, the prices are a little high, but for quality seafood (considering we are not close to the ocean), wonderful wines (I trust every selection and have yet to be disappointed), a sushi bar, deli options, even cooking utensils and supplies (they sell Le Creuset) as well as locally made food such as Bontà gelato. The service is friendly and on Friday be sure to stop by the deli for the once weekly made coconut shrimp and prime rib.
11. Have dinner at a special place
If you do want to dine out for a lovely, palette pleasuring experience, make reservations especially at Ariana’s (use OpenTable – they only allow one month in advance, but you will need it, and request to not be placed by the backdoor) and it is recommended highly at both The French Market and Tim Garling’s Jackalope Grill.
A few weeks ago I wrote a review of the newly opened French Market which sources its menu from local, seasonal produce, as does both Jackalope and Ariana’s. The Jackalope Grill is sometimes overlooked because of the name, but you will not want to miss dining here. The French-trained chef Garling offers new American fare that is served in a traditional dining setting. With both indoor and courtyard seating (see here), I often felt I was dining in New York City with the cement walls and globe style lighting.
Ariana’s Restaurant has been recognized by the James Beard association and with good reason. The white tablecloth service, the unique and unexpected offerings all the while catering to the new approaches to classic European dishes, be sure to have a look at my review here. Only open Tuesday through Saturday beginning at 5pm, make a reservation now and it will be worth the wait.
~The French Market, located in the Old Bend district~

12. Watch an Independent film at the Tin Pan Theater
To conclude the evening, instead of heading to the Old Mill Movie Theaters, stop into a small boutique theater in downtown Bend, the Tin Pan Theater. As you can see from the images below, there are only five rows with either five or six seats each. The door opens 30 minutes before show time, and you cannot reserve your tickets in advance, so be sure to show up early. The films are often independent or foreign that don’t typically show in the large theaters.
The prices for tickets, food and drinks (wine and beer as well as free water) are far lower than what we have become accustomed to, and the atmosphere is quite memorable and comfortable.
Having viewed two different films at the Tin Pan Theater (Paris Can Wait and Lost in Paris), one filled up and one met half of the capacity, I cannot wait to go again.
And now to drift to dream, savoring the goodness of the simple way of living, even if for a day in the city of Bend, Oregon. So often we feel we need to make grand plans to ensure a most memorable time in a destination away from home, but often it is by experiencing the common events (dining, bookshop visiting, sipping a cup of coffee) in a new setting with new people and different energy that can create a powerful experience to remind us of the beauty of the everyday gifts around us. Perhaps your town is just has lovely if seen through a tourist’s eyes.
While I have the good fortunate to have each of these experiences available to me year-round, it is my hope I never take them for granted because having such luxuries was not such the case before I arrived, and I feel very much like an adult in a candyland of riches.
If you have any questions about an upcoming trip to Bend, be sure to check out my City Guide which I am regularly updating, as well as view all of the posts specifically highlighting my favorite destinations in Bend (many of which were included in this post, but not all). You are also welcome to email me ([email protected]), and I will do my best to answer and offer suggestions you might enjoy.

and yep, you've articulated my position exactly. it's about punching up, but not even because the person i'm punching is so high up there they're not even gonna feel the merest kiss of my knuckles
