#spock and uhura are connected in aos
Allow me to present "The Thing My Brain Imagined And Keeps Replaying TM"
Context: Spock is searching for someone to talk to about his Very Complicated Emotions but came to the realization that he cannot speak to Jim and Nyota about Jim and Nyota, Mister Scott will have little advice on the matter and may even laugh about it, which only leaves one other choice: Doctor McCoy, the only logical option
Spock: Doctor, could you perhaps spare a moment for conversation?
Bones: Sure, I have a little free time. What seems to be the issue, Mister Spock?
Spock: *giving him the spock stare* It will be in an unprofessional capacity, Doctor. Are you okay wi-
Bones: *leaning over to press the back of his hand to Spock's forehead*
Spock: *leaning out of his reach* Doctor, what are you doing?
Bones: Checking to see if you have a fever. What's going on with you Spock? You didn't speak a word on the bridge today unless prompted, not even to Jim. And now you're here wanting to talk to me? About something that doesn't have to do with the ship, no less!
Spock: One could argue that is does in fact have to do with the ship.
Bones: *narrowing his eyes* Did something happen to Jim he didn't report to me?
Spock: No, however it is about the Captain.
Bones: *blinking slowly* you're here to talk to me about Jim...unprofessionally? Spock, what the hell is going on?
Spock: *cheeks and the tips of his ears flushing the lightest hint of green* To use a human phrase I do not favor but serves to explain my situation quite well: It is complicated, Leonard.
****
thanks for reading this far lol. I hope that by putting it here I can get it out of my head. I wish I could draw. I think it would be a cute comic. alas, I was gifted with the ability to write.
I just think Spock having feelings for both Jim and Nyota is really neat and my brain won't let it go, so here we are. Spock turning to his last resource and hoping the good Doctor might be able to help, or at least lend an ear as he talks himself through this mess until he finds the logic of it again.
:)

Star Trek asks: 🖖, 🌀 and 👩🏼‍❤️‍💋‍👩🏾
🖖 First Star Trek Media you encountered:
We watched TNG on television when I was a kid (as it was airing the first time!). One of my earliest memories (I was 4) is of Will Riker getting sucked into the big black Armus pool and how freaky that was. I remember the face coming up from the bottom.
And they saved him! he was okay. (Tasha's death did not compute in my very small mind). Will being okay in the end was part of "Star Trek means we're all okay" which is my earliest opinion.
Often this still carries over.
🌀 If the Holodeck was real, what's the first thing you would use it for?
adventure fantasy RPGs. I'd love to be able to play something like Dragon Age. It would be incredible.
I would also use it to test out fic lines and positions and make sure they make sense. I have no sense of inner eye, so that would be helpful. Where do her hands go...
👩🏼‍❤️‍💋‍👩🏾 Do you ship any characters? Who?
Oh Georgiou.
I don't have any strong preferences about ships in some series. My levels of shipping are:
Ships I find cute on screen. (USS Enterprise-G)
Ships I would read fic. I would probably write fic for an exchange or a challenge. (USS Enterprise-D)
Ships I would write fic for, because I want the fic to bring myself joy and those are much more intense. (USS Voyager) I will land my starship on this planet.
Ships that are platonic for me and I adore them. (USS Protostar)
Ships where I want to read everything that has ever been written about them. I have saved all the artwork. I want to commission more artwork. (USS DIscovery) I will travel through the mycelial network for this ship. This ship is my home.
(under a cut for length)
TOS - no ships. Never really had any. TOS is not foundational for me though, I don't think I've seen the whole thing and probably never will. It's so much men talking.
AOS - I have a soft spot for Spock/Uhura. I really liked Uhura.
TNG - I shipped Deanna/Will so much as a child. They're in my very first fanfic. I liked Beverly/Jean-Luc (historical) later, but not until I was an adult. Deanna/Will I shipped as a very tiny human. I have witten fic for both of these. I also ship Beverly/Deanna, and Beverly/Deanna/Will in a very lighthearted way.
DS9 - Jadzia Dax/Lenara Kahn is gorgeous and tragic and I adore them. Kira/Dax in a very lighthearted way. They're fun. I shipped Jadzia Dax/Worf when the show first came out and probably would if I did a rewatch, but it's a very mild ship (I wouldn't read fic). I am very invested in Jadzia Dax.
VOY - Kathryn Janeway/B'Elanna Torres is fun. I've read some fic. I love how intellectual they would be together. I wrote and read much Janeway/Chakotay (historical) about ten years ago, but I'm not as into him now. (Robert Beltran makes it hard for me). Still love Janeway. I also like Seven/B'Elanna.
ENT - I enjoyed Trip/T'Pol when the show was on. I don't think I've seen all of it. I love T'Pol.
SNW - I have a passing interest in Una/La'An and Una/Pike. I've read some fic but haven't written any. I want nice things for Batel/Pike in canon. (he needs to be a better partner to her though). I ship Amanda/Sarek here simply based on how convince I am that Amanda loves him.
PIC - Seven/Raffi are wonderful and I adore them. I love their connection and their dear faces. Agnes/Borg Queen are fun and dark. Laris/Zhaban are fun. I wanted to ship Beverly/Jean-Luc again but they didn't give me much. Shipper brain was not engaged. Deanna/Will were so angsty. Will & Beverly might be my strongest legacy ship in this show. I wish Beverly & Deanna got to talk.
PRODIGY - dammit here I almost ship Janeway/Chakotay again. I ship Janeway/happiness here so much and if finding him will make her happy, okay fine. Gwyndala/Dal are cute and I want them to have nice things. Haven't wanted to read any fic though.
Crossover Trek - Beverly Crusher/Kathryn Janeway has held a special place in my shipper heart for 13 years. I love them so much. I love that they're still going and they show up in exchanges. They would be such a good couple.
Philippa Georgiou/Afsaneh Paris was such a fun thing.
Most trek crossover femslash is fun and I would try it in an exchange.
DSC - Philippa Georgiou (captain)/Katrina Cornwell. They'd be cute. They must have met. Katrina Cornwell/Gabriel Lorca (prime), Katrina sold me on that one. Katrina Cornwell/Philippa Georgiou (emperor), they have a handful of scenes and they would totally work.
Michael Burnham/Cleveland Booker are very cute on screen and I hope they get a nice ending. (I think they will). Hugh Culber/Paul Stamets are adorable and charming. Adira Tal/Gray Tal are so sweet. Saru/T'Rina are the regency couple of Star Trek and they're very cute. They're so happy in season 5, I love it. I think Joann Owosekun/Keyla Detmer are really fun, I hope they get a nod this season. I love how much the actors do with a look. Michael & Tilly are one of my favorite friendships ever and I adore them. Michael Burnham & Philippa Georgiou (emperor) variety is so complex and intense and I love how they evolve and grow together.
Michael Burnham/Laira Rillak are my top tier, own my soul, ship. I will read every fic that is ever published of them and reblog the gifs on repeat forever and memorize every nuance of every conversation they've ever had. They are the shiniest thing in my fannish heart at the moment, and I have watched their scenes together so many times.
For years I was this obsessed with Beverly/Kathryn, but they didn't have scenes together so I couldn't rewatch them.
Micahel/Laira have scenes together! They talk to each other! I have a whole arc that I can watch on repeat!! I have different episodes to watch for different feelings I need for fic!!
They're so niche and I wish I had more people to talk about them with because I love them so much and...it is a very lonely ship. People do write fic and read it and it's tiny and lovely. I am so grateful for all the interactions I ever have about this ship.
I often feel very out of step in my fannish Star Trek spaces because they are not a ship shared by many. I feel seen when someone acknowledges how much I love them.

~ All Hope Is Lost ~
"Get me the next ones!"
Montgomery Scott's heart almost jumped out of his chest when he heard the words. He knew that it would mean the end for many members of the crew. And perhaps for him too.
When the Enterprise had been attacked, crashed on the enemy planet and its crew captured by Krall and his henchmen, no one had realized just how bad it would end for them.
They had been locked up and one by one some of them had been taken away.
To where? None of them knew. They only knew that none of them ever came back. The last thing they heard from their comrades were pain-filled screams.
"No, let go of me! Please let go of me!"
The desperate shriek of one of his female engineers caught Scotty's attention.
Ensign Maria Stanson. A brilliant young lady in whom he had always had high hopes.
A big alien guy was pulling her roughly by the hair. When she tried to fight back, he slapped her hard across the face.
"Oi! Get yer filthy hands off her!"
Scotty couldn't and wouldn't hold back. He just wanted to beat up these monsters.
The alien's eyes met his and only a moment later Stanson was free and the cell in which the Scotsman was sitting was opened.
He took his chance immediately and lunged at the guy, who was probably far too strong, punching him in the face.
These bastards had friends of his on their conscience. What's more, they had destroyed his beautiful ship. If he could harm even one of these creatures, he would gladly do so.
Even if it wasn't good for his own health.
His counterpart grabbed his wrist as Scotty tried to strike again and only a second later a terrible cracking sound announced that the bones were broken.
The chief engineer gritted his teeth and tried his best not to scream out loud. He would not show any weakness now!
"Mr. Scott!"
He saw how a lot of the crew members stared at him with wide eyes in shock before the alien pulled him along.
"Keep fighting those bastards! Don't let them get ye down! Wait for the captain!"
If it was the last time he saw the crew, he wanted to give them hope at least once more. They would make it. At least some of them would.
He thought of Keenser. He hoped so much that the wee man would survive. He had always been such a good friend to him, even though they had often clashed.
He thought of Sulu and Uhura. They had been captured too, but he hadn't seen them for days. He just hoped they were all right.
Spock and the captain and Chekov. They had all escaped somehow, hadn't been captured. And Scotty believed that they were working on a plan to rescue the crew at this very moment. A Vulcan, a strong-willed young man and a Wunderkind - what could possibly go wrong?
Especially when they were supported by the most wonderful and intelligent doctor in the entire fleet.
Yes, Dr. McCoy had not been captured either. He was still out there somewhere and would try to save everyone.
Scotty swallowed hard at the thought of the doctor. He just wanted to see him again, wanted to have a drink with him and talk to him for hours.
Why had he never told him how he felt? Why had he never told the doctor how much he appreciated him and how much he wished there was more between them than friendship?
No. He would tell him. He would get his chance. For sure.
His captor took him to a strange room where two other crew members were standing.
Scotty's eyes widened. It was Lt. Hendorff and Nurse Chapel. Both were tied up with lots of cables and wires connected to a strange looking machine.
Scotty wheeled around when he heard the voice of the man responsible for all this.
Krall. That was the name he had used to introduce himself to his prisoners.
He was talking to his partner in a language the Scotsman didn't understand. Judging by the expression on his face, he was probably annoyed that it had taken a little longer.
"Lt. Commander Scott."
Scotty narrowed his eyes in irritation when Krall switched languages and addressed him directly.
He stretched his back and looked defiantly at Krall.
"Aye. That's me."
Even if he had no idea how his counterpart knew that.
"You know the ship best. So where is it? Where is the artifact?"
For a moment, Scotty had no idea what Krall was talking about, but then he remembered the Enterprise's last mission.
The strange object that Jim had brought with him. But... what was so special about it?
"I haven't the faintest idea. But I can tell ye one thing, even if I did know, I certainly wouldn't tell ye."
Scotty put all the hatred he felt at that moment into his gaze. He wanted Krall to know how much he loathed him.
For a while they just stared at each other, before Krall nodded and gestured to the cables.
His partner pushed Scotty forward roughly and only a short time later the engineer was as bound as Hendorff and Chapel. Both made unintelligible noises, gagged by the cables.
"The captain will come. He'll get us out of here."
Krall's cool laugh caused Scotty's gaze to wander back to him. The man who had just been whispering with his partner stood close in front of him, gripping some cables with his hand.
"Too late, Scott. My subjects have found him and the rest of your friends. They've just informed me of this. It's over."
Scotty's eyes widened and he shook his head.
No... no. That was... impossible. Jim was too clever. He would never let himself be caught. And neither would the others.
Krall put the cables around Scotty's mouth and gagged him in the same fashion as the others.
But the Scotsman didn't give up. He moved back and forth, trying to free himself somehow.
He would not give up. He would never surrender!
But one look into Krall's eyes told him that it was over. He was helpless. There was nothing he could do.
Then he heard voices approaching. They came closer and closer. And suddenly they were standing there.
Spock, Chekov, Kirk... and McCoy.
Tears filled Scotty's eyes at the sight of his friends. His family.
So it really was true. It was... over. They had lost.
"What the- let them go! Let my people go. Right now!"
It didn't matter what the captain said. Krall wouldn't listen to him.
"Where's the artifact, Kirk?"
Scotty knew. He knew Jim had hidden it. He knew Jim would protect it.
But the Scotsman would never hear the man's answer.
When Krall activated the machine and he felt all the life being sucked out of him, his eyes were fixed on McCoy, who watched in shock as his friends slowly and agonizingly died.
He would tell him the truth. In another life. For sure.

[initial reactions] Star Trek: SNW 2x09 - Subspace Rhapsody
This was a fun musical episode! I still say Trek shows should be more than 10 episodes because there are some character beats here that feel it needs more than a few episodes to just be and breathe.
(Once again laughing that Paul Wesley managed to escape a musical in TVD only to leap headfirst into a show that would do a musical and he can't walk away. This is laughing in fun btw 'cause I do like Paul Wasilewski and his real-life snarky dry sense of humor, but also, HAHAHA. They got you, Wasilewski!)
I liked it! It wasn't Buffy the Musical, but that's okay, it was fun and it moved character arcs along!
I haven't mentioned before but I really love the medical uniform Chapel's wearing, which I think originated from Discovery s1 and 2.
I love how it took a while for Uhura to sing but when she did, she hit a breakthrough. I love that this was her episode but it wasn't just about Uhura.
The musical numbers I really enjoyed: Uhura's solo, La'an's solo, and Chapel's whole musical number. The three strongest singers of the show.
I'm glad that La'an was able to tell her secret because it was weighing on her so much and I'm glad that
Speaking of episodes where character beats needed more than 10 episodes. It's such a whiplash to go from Spock and T'Pol breaking up to Christine and Spock being together for what 2 episodes? I am glad we got Christine's song how this was something that can change her life forever. (If I'm not mistaken that guy running the program will be her ill-fated fiance). But we've gone from Christine pinint for Spock, to being ambivalent with him, to Boimler throwing cold water into the fledgling relationship with Spock. I wish we got to see Spock and Christine have just an episode or more to be in a relationship and happy.
There's not enough Pelia! (Speaking of, where are the other engineers? I know the answer is most likely covid restrictions but I wish there were some engineers working in Engineering in the background).
You know what? I've tried but I just had a thrill of happiness at all the moments Spock and Uhura were together. I know it's not as popular a ship as Spock/Kirk and Spock/Chapel but the TOS version I'm most familiar with (aside from the original TOS movies) is AOS. And since then Spock/Uhura is my ship. So, I'm just gonna embrace it. I ship them!
The Klingon boy band!
Uhura really is my favorite! I love how she started as someone uncertain of Starfleet to finding connection and family in the Enterprise even though she still felt alone at times. I love that Communications Officer is a vital part of ship's functions. Also, with the way Uhura is, it makes so much sense she makes Captain in the future. She has an air of someone who would be so good in Command.
Speaking of, I wish Discovery had these kind of fun episodes instead of one long story and I think this episode really highlighted the problem with the crew of Disco. Aside from 4 characters we really don't know the Disco crew as well as the SNW crew, I don't know what the Disco bridge crew's 'I want song'.
"I wan't" songs are, according to Playbill:
"The term is thought to have been coined by Lehman Engel, founder of the BMI Workshop for musical theatre composers, librettists, and lyricists. These songs are more than just inspiring musical numbers—in many cases, they launch the journey of a play, allowing the audience to get an inside look at force driving a character's action. They express a dissatisfaction or a dream of the character that propels them through the musical."
It's really sad that it seems season 5 is the season when the show regains their sense of fun. I hope the crew is written more of an ensemble in the final season. Disco is a good show, it just really needs to fix its ensemble writing.
Back to SNW, that was such a fun episode I'm also glad Una's taking her second chance to build more relationships and be more open with her crew. It makes sense.
BTW with all the Red in security and the Gold in Command... it occurred to me that SNW Enterprise crew probably thought Mariner and Boimler were Ops!
Anyway, that's a good episode! Good penultimate episode!

this is why I'm so wary of following certain fans. the hate I saw yesterday, especially on Twitter when the trailer dropped was ugh. I recently just got into the fandom and it's the same sh** I saw in the Star Wars fandom. Don't really wanna compare them to TFM but that's what it felt like all over again. I feel like I'm really going to have to be selective about who I follow and what content I want to see. sometimes fandom can really ruin the show's experience :/ I just thought ST would be different considering TOS show broke so many boundaries, but no, they're just mad Spock kissed another woman.
Yeah, it does seem there are a lot of corners of the fandom that aren't happy, and I get it. They have their favorite ships, and they want to see them on the show! As a multishipper, I'm good with pretty much whatever I get. I'm pretty happy with the Christine / Spock content we are getting on snw, but during the AOS movie era I loved Uhura / Spock and when I watch TOS I'm struck by the connection shared between Spock and Kirk.
I think Spock is someone who is very long-lived. He'll live more than one hundred years, and saying he can only have one love / one relationship is reductive. I think all of those relationships existing, and that Spock deserves to live a life full of affection and love.
I survived the dw fandom in 2013. At this point, I've learned to curate my fandom experience. I'm vibing in my corner. Christine is my fave character and I enjoy her dynamic with Spock. I just some good content!

Spirk fanfic rec
Some amazing Spirk fanfic to bless your dash because I’m falling in love with this shit all over again (this is like the 10th time this has happened lol):
Entering Orbit:  Jim escapes to Iowa to avoid the media frenzy following the Narada incident, but a late-night miscommunication results in Spock turning up on his front porch; rated m; 30,957 words
Papers in the Roadside:  Non-Starfleet AU. Jim owns a small bar in Chicago, keeps on picking up strays and taking care of everyone no matter how hard it makes his own life. Spock is a journalist writing feature articles for the Chicago Tribune; he depicts the world with uncanny skill, but hides more than one personal drama and is possibly under surveillance from the Vulcan royal family. They meet by accident just before their lives start to spin out of control; rated e; 49,637 words
Take Refuge in What You Know:  AU - Kirk has moved into a apartment/house and wants to get to know his neighbors. He meets his neighbor Spock, a loner who suffers from extreme agoraphobia. Kirk thinks he's beautiful enigma; rated e; 120,334 words
Listen, this is not only my favorite Star Trek fic of all time, it’s also one of my favorite fanfics in general. It’s right up there with Text Talk and The Shoebox Project from the HP fandom, which if you’ve read, you know are incredible and frankly life-changing. And this fanfic changed my life. The description the author gives doesn’t do the beauty of this fic justice. I suffer from agoraphobia and Spock’s depiction as an agoraphobic man was probably the most well-researched, sympathetic, empathetic, caring, realistic portrayal of what it’s like to be agoraphobic that I’ve ever witnessed in fiction. It made me cry like a child because I had never felt so seen and understood. This writer is incredible, and this fic is incredible. I can’t recommend it enough. It’s an AU, which I’m usually pretty wary about, but it barely even feels like an AU. It just feels like Jim and Spock. The author’s understanding of both of their characters’ is perfect, like just a spot-on portrayal of who they are. This fic genuinely helped me accept who I am and helped me understand that I am capable of & deserving of love. If you don’t read any other Star Trek fics (and you def should read more Star Trek fics because they’re amazing), then let this one be the one you read. I dare you not to read it three times in a row like I did.
Observations:  First Officer Spock comments on life aboard the Enterprise and his service under Captain James T. Kirk; rated m; 500,000+ words.
So the author of this fic actually did a thing where they made this fic into two books (similar to what The Shoebox Project authors did many years ago in the HP fandom). They don’t get any money from people buying the books; the cost is just to go towards producing the books. This fic is the equivalent of two LARGE novels. We’re talking 600 pages & up. It’s a huge fic. Now, that being said, I read it in one day. ONE DAY. It’s that good. This is another one of my all-time favorite fics, though not quite as dear to my heart as the one I listed above. It’s focused on AOS, and tbh, I forget that what happens in this book isn’t actually canon. Like it’s so well-told, it just feels like it’s now part of the timeless story of Kirk & Spock. The “professional” Star Trek writers would never be brave enough to do what this author does with Kirk and Spock, though. This fic will make you angry, will make you laugh, will make you cry. It has such a good grasp on every single character. It also shows the love between the crew of the Enterprise, which is always a treat, and it’s beautifully done in this fic. It has a sorta-enemies-to-lovers arc between Spirk and an enemies-to-close-friends arc between Spock and McCoy that is beautifully done and fleshed out. This fic is definitely a journey to go through, and I can’t recommend it enough. It’s extremely slow burn, and you will want to slap both Kirk and Spock (and McCoy) upside the head at certain points lol.
Of Coffee Beans and Green Tea Leaves:  The progression of a relationship, through Coffee Beans and Green Tea Leaves. Basically, it’s an AU where Kirk works at a coffee shop to pay his way through school, and Spock visits often. rated t; 16,429 words
Love, love, love, this fic. It’s cute, it’s in character. They have kind of a rocky start together, so it’s got a little bit of that Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy i-hated-you-but-now-i-love-you-marry-me vibes to it. I’m a sucker for that, if you haven’t figured that out by now lol. It’s really good, and a really enjoyable read. And it’s not too long, if you’re in the mood for something on the shorter end of things.
Please Don’t Touch the Vulcans:  The "yes" is out of Jim's mouth before he can think about it. Jim is chipper about having time off for the holidays. He asks everyone if they want to spend time together but sadly, everyone ditches Jim over the holidays because they have plans. McCoy visits his daughter, Nyota visits her family, and everyone splits. Not knowing Spock has feelings for him, Jim doesn't even bother asking if he wants to spend time together figuring he has something to do. Something cute, romantic with the boys spending time with one another and confessions; rated m; 17,690 words
Super cute and has lots of Sarek, which idk about y’all, but I’m always a fan of. Sarek and Jim kind of get to know each other a bit, and it’s cute. Sarek knows about they’re in love before Spock & Kirk know lol. If I remember correctly, there’s also some appearances from everyone’s favorite: Old!Spock! You also get a little bit of jealous and protective Young!Spock. So you’re in for a real treat with this one.
The Ren shat’var Trilogy:  A split-second decision changes Jim's life forever, as he enters into a bond with Spock in the face of certain torture. Enemies to the Federation emerge from unlikely places, and the command team must contend with unexpected threats, as well as challenges within their own intense relationship. In this three-part series, the Enterprise races across the galaxy to confront the unknown, and Jim and Spock discover the true significance of their unprecedented connection; rated e; 184,411 words
Textual Attraction:  Valentine’s Day does not bring up pleasant memories for Cadet Kirk. But the serendipitous switch-up of his cell phone with a particular Vulcan professor’s will make his day far more interesting –and romantic. Perhaps some new memories can be made! 15,900 words
SO GOOD. Just SO good
Spaceman:  Academy AU. Five times Spock realizes he's attracted to a barista at the academy spaceport, and one time he decides to do something about it. rated t; 3728 words
Short, sweet, funny. You’ll love it.
Subtext: Texting your Vulcan first officer in the middle of the night is never a good idea. Especially when you have an obsessive crush on said Vulcan. The holidays are approaching and Jim is left entirely Spockless aboard the Enterprise when his First takes shore leave on New Vulcan. After some midnight pining, Jim sends a text he instantly regrets. That is, until Spock responds and willingly continues their textual communications to an inevitable conclusion; rated t; 13,032 words
Cute, sweet, funny. It’s a texting fic. I think you’ve probably figured out I love those. This one makes me laugh so fucking hard. Like actually laugh-out-loud-omg-did-i-just-snort kind of funny. Spock is great in this one
All Spock Wants For Christmas:  While Jim is away on a delegation mission, he panics about what to give Spock for Christmas. With help from Bones and Uhura, and in between some spam texting with Spock, Jim realizes he already has the perfect gift. And all it needs is wrapping paper and a bow; rated t; 11,966 words
And here we have another cute, sweet, funny texting fic. Sue me lol
The Morning After:  Jim convinces Spock to take shore leave with him on Risa, hoping the time together will help re-solidify their bond of friendship after some recent tension. Meanwhile, Spock convinces himself he's on Risa for one reason and one reason only, to prevent his wayward captain from getting into trouble. After a passionately illogical night of Romulan Ale and chocolate infused liquor, everything changes when Jim wakes with something other than a hangover filling his head. Something he's sure neither he nor Spock can handle. Because if Jim knows anything for sure, it's that his messed up thoughts belong nowhere near Spock's clean, ordered mind; rated m; 50,381 words
HAHA. This fic fucking cracks me up. You’ve got drunk boys pining over each other & not realizing it. You’ve got accidental marriage. You’ve got bed sharing. It’s great, it’s cute, it’s funny.
Take This Sinking Boat (And Point It Home):  In which Spock pines, Jim isn’t stupid (except he kind of is), and Christopher Pike has had enough of this bullshit; 6698 words
Pike is great in this one, and it’s super, super funny.
Extracurricular Activities:   Spock returns to the Academy from a tour of duty to find an intriguing cadet captures his attention; rated e; 15,433 words
Veritas: Basically, Kirk and Spock are on trial because the Federation thinks they are emotionally compromised by each other, which is putting the lives of their crew in danger. They have to convince a court they’re not actually in love with each other. They think the claims are bullshit. They think it will be easy to prove that they aren’t in love or emotionally compromised, damn it. It isn’t; rated m; 186,80 words
This one is so, so good. A real gem off of Fanfic.net. I remember it was actually one of the first Spirk fanfics I ever read, and it blew me away. The progression of their relationship is really well-done and interesting. It has star-crossed lovers vibes and has some really emotionally intense moments in it, especially for Spock.
A Habitual Affection:  Living in 1930s New York with the Vulcan you're secretly in love with is no simple thing. But Jim never liked anything simple. And then, the big snowstorm hit...; rated t; 7998 words
A beautiful TOS fic about one of the gayest episodes of Star Trek. Love this one.
Atlas:  Between what was and what will be stands James Tiberius Kirk, in all his fractured patchwork glory. Because saving the Federation was only the beginning; rated t; 135,529 words
A beaut. Really great characterization, and the progression of Jim and Spock’s relationship is really well-done.

yes, the spock/t'pring scene was off-putting.
i think However that it is mostly off-putting to the Online, Fandom audience. i really loved the portrayal of t'pring!! it's the spock end of the scene that gives us pause, and given how well-written and thoughtful i found the rest of the episode, at this point I'm willing to say that Maybe, we are Meant to be Off-Put. I'm going to try and organize some thoughts I'm having about a) the fandom reaction and b) character thoughts
we know that michael is on spock's mind. we know the last words and advice michael gave to her little brother (I'm tearing up right now). and given the line "i have been away, which can mitigate tradition" I'm strongly inclined to believe that spock is Going Through It. he's still trying to balance the two halves of himself; he's found a home in starfleet, but after losing his sister, he perhaps feels he's missing a connection to vulcan. to me this is not only entirely plausible but a necessary step in the journey of discovering himself!
on the fandom side of things, can we like. remember that the presence of a het relationship does not mean spock isn't queer. can we also remember how important the aos spock/uhura relationship was to many black women. the beauty of our fictional blorbos is that different people can interpret them in a variety of interesting ways; there is no one right interpretation. can we not write tweets to the new kirk actor and tell him how to play the role lol
honestly, whether they "should" make spock gay/queer or not, i think it's fairly unlikely they will. but the snw spock/t'pring scene doesn't mean they're disrespecting canon or amok time. i can see a potential path to the events of that episode, and let's just see where the journey takes us, you know? we can disagree with new canon without being rude little shits online to cast & crew. that is as ever what fanfic is for. ok bye

For the Ship Ask...talk to me about Uhura & Spock.
WELL YOU KNOW WHAT! I didn't expect anybody to ask me about this one in 2022, but I'm glad that you did, because I really don't get to talk about them as much as I loved to do, because I don't really know anybody in the fandom anymore.
Tumblr media
SHIP IT. BIG SHIP IT.
1. What made me ship it?
Uhura and Spock were one of my first unconscious ships. I liked them together at a pretty young age and didn't really know the concept of shipping or anything of that sort, because I was a kid. But, I think what made me ship it was that, as a kid with a huge crush on Spock and somebody really excited to see a Black lady in space, I most likely projected. (But also, they had a bit of rapport in TOS that I likely noticed and categorized in a girl + boy way doable for my brain at the time). Whenever the reboot came out in 2009, that was the first time I began sharing fan fiction with a fandom and the first fandom that I made online friends with as opposed to talking about stuff at school or with people I hung out with from work and the bar and stuff. So, in a way, it sometimes feels like my first fandom a lot of the time, despite having detached myself from Star Trek fans I knew in real life because... rabid. Jesus.
I have a special place in my heart for Uhura and Spock always, even being a multishipper and shipping both of them with others at times. They're my primary there and I've been able to envision them since I was a kid.
2. What are my favorite things about the ship?
I enjoyed the fact that while you'd often see Spock (sometimes) come off as a bit of a rude person in our human society, he was always honest and his honest thoughts towards her were always really nice ones. You'd even see him appear to enjoy her company at times.
Skip to AOS, and they're canonically involved - he backs her up when put in the position to do so and you get to actually SEE him be vulnerable with a person he's involved with instead of having to make it up in your mind like so many of us had to do for decades of Star Trek shipping prior to the establishment of this romantic connection in the reboot.
I love relationships between people who aren't living solely to connect with others and have a relationship. I like to see two people who could take it or leave it, but have chosen to work with each other and to put into it what they need, and be honest when that isn't there. I'm not a romantic. I'm a realist who sometimes enjoys romance, so they work perfectly in that they aren't fluffy, all over each other and going on epic feats of love and affection, BUT, they will rush to each other's aid when needed and be passionate about that.
3. Is there an unpopular opinion that I have on this ship?
Well, I don't talk to enough trekkies to know what's popular or not, but if I had to think of something that I could remember seeing/not seeing, I would say that I think more people view them in this light where Uhura would either tire of his Vulcan ways and want to have something more emotional or affectionate?
I think that Uhura would be more likely to be chill with a lot of the toned down areas of his being and as a skilled communicator, use everything, not just his words to assess his emotions. And he has so much of them, as a Vulcan, just doesn't react on those as much, but I think she would always see and know what's going on in there, and not be confused, turned off, insecure, or whatever else, for the most part.
Damn... I miss them!

fic love
Fanfic has gotten me through These Trying Times (tm). Hope this fic brings you joy.
K'diwa: A Steamy Novel of Interspecies Romance, by Jim Kirk by @branwyn-says
Since the story is set at the Academy, before the events shown in the recent movies, it does not require much canon knowledge.
Jim Kirk writes a Human/Vulcan romance novel, and then it gets anonymously leaked. Most Vulcans who read it suddenly have ideas about wooing humans. Spock, however, responds differently. He relates strongly to the events and emotions presented in the novel, feeling seen and understood in that way that one does when engaging with powerful stories. He also gains insight into the mystery author. Spock is captivated, and desperately wants to find and befriend whoever wrote this book.
This story is funny, in a number of places (McCoy is done especially well) but it's not a humor fic. The release of the smutty novel begins the action in an amusing way, but then events unfold which rapidly and profoundly impact both Kirk and Spock.
@branwyn-says uses the tastiest parts of Kirk's AOS backstory and then expands on it with some of my favorite Kirk tropes, including Tarsus IV trauma and an extra shitty childhood (none of which is shown explicitly). Kirk has Survived Some Shit and really, he Don't Need No Man. Yet he keeps finding himself in trouble and needing help. At one point he actually does swoon! -- and Spock, of course, is there to catch him. (Spock is just lovely in this fic. Also, very protective. Not controlling, but like, Gold Star, I will protecc)
I love the way that Kirk gets taken care of in this story. Not just by Spock, who treats him with wisdom and gentleness, but by everyone else who cares about him, as well. So we get Pike as a mentor, and Bones as a devoted bestie, and Gaila as a soul-sister/fellow survivor and Uhura as a smart and staunch friend. Kirk is loved by these people, despite his certainty that he doesn't deserve it (because we recognize that brainweasel, don't we?) You can't love someone out of their trauma, but gosh darn it, it sure helps.
Another thing I loved is that Kirk has a familiarity with Vulcan language and culture that works great in this story (and which is one of my favorite things in Star Trek fic, full stop -- rec me your faves!! (Yes, I've read Graduate Vulcan for Fun and Profit, and Linguistic Ambiguities in Vulcan Ethical Codes -- I could read Vulcan-influenced Kirk all day)).
Speaking of Vulcan business going on, there's also cool telepathy, worldbuilding about bonding and courtship, and a delightful look at Vulcan society. Not to mention the moments of Surprise Competence when a characters reveals hitherto unknown skills or baddassery -- that, too, is my jam.
Overall, this is a gentle story where Kirk comes to a place of comfort and healing through his unexpected connection with Spock. It's a fantastic read for when you want a plot that moves along nicely but doesn't cliffhanger you at every turn, to see hurt people find caring, and lonely people find connection.

One thing that puts me off about a lot of Sp1rk fics/meta is the demonization of McCoy and Uhura. Uhura bashing is mostly rooted in misogynoir. McCoy is a white man but he often gets stereotyped as a “dumb Southerner,” an anti-Black stereotype that was eventually extended to all Southerners.
I don't think I've ever heard the dumb southerner stereotype connected to antiblackness. Personally I've always loved McCoy's character except for when he's prejudiced against spock. He's a good foil for Kirk. The misogynoir against Uhura should always be called out tho because of the way that this fandom was happy to keep her in her communications position and stuck there. They used to pay lipservice to liking her but then the AOS movies came out and all sorts of ppl (including nonblack liberals) were adamantly against spuhura.

In honour of Spock's birthday, here's some Spock thoughts and ideas and stuff. Some are tos, but I mainly think of aos when I write these because I mostly write in aos for fanfics.
As said in a previous post, he's not straight but there's no Earth term for what he identifies as, only a Vulcan term that I can't be bothered to actual specify
His sexuality and romantic attraction is always changing
He really loves Uhura but no other woman, he really like Jim and maybe Bones is some ships but doesn't always like men, he is attracted to non binary people too but sometimes not
Sometimes he is a bit more aversed to romance or sex so him and a partner are more friends when he feels this way
Btw he makes sure to inform all partners of this before pursuing a relationship because come on guys it's logical
He visited his earth family for certain holidays and maybe his maternal grandparents' birthdays
He didn't like it too much, too loud, too emotional, he wasn't allowed to study
But he was going through a zoology phase that he never really grew out of so he got to study frogs in Amanda's hometown
One birthday Uhura got him a small vial of Vulcan sand and that holds until his hand is red from gripping tightly when grief gets too much
Prime Spock became his gay uncle
Amanda used to knit him something for his birthday and he gets bittersweet feels illogical emotional flashbacks whenever Bones gives him something he knitted (bones got told of this tradition and wanted to maintain the tradition because he's lost a parent he loved too and knows about lost connections and stuff)
Just like Sulu smuggling alien plants on board and getting a 7 hour lecture about foreign pathogens and fungi from Bones
Spock (with help from Jim and Chekov) smuggles alien animals on board
Purely because it's logical to study these animals and sometimes they're gifts from the locals that would be illogical to deny because of diplomacy
He comes to terms with his emotions a bit sooner than tos Spock (surprising I know)
But only because tos Spock managed to hide his so well for so long that it was a struggle to break of the repression and use meditation and logic to process your emotions
Which aos Spock did quicker because he didn't truly reach full emotional denial and repression before getting his found family
I hope you enjoyed these, and happy birthday to the sassiest Vulcan around!

sorry can i vent about aos!spuhura? bc here's the thing: they didn't even COME CLOSE to the chemistry of tos! spock & uhura in "charlie x" when she sings a silly little song & he plays his little harp like the gay little band geeks they are
hahaha yeah i was frustrated with aos!spock/uhura too! to paraphrase @thylaa, aos@spuhura is like two ice queens whereas tos!spuhura they had a connection built on them both being incredibly empathetic people, which is just a very different vibe && results in very different relationships! i also have other issues with it mostly like frustration with how they kind of relegated uhura to the 'spock's girlfriend' role for the first two movies like just sticking her with a bunch of sexist tropes and like idk it was just frustrating to see that take over so much of uhura's storyline and plotlines. also like did not love what it implied/said about spock like the whole thing in 2009 when he doesn't assign her to the enterprise to avoid the appearance of favoritism which was in my opinion meant as, like, a clever way of shocking us with their relationship but which implies that spock is not only dating one of his students and hiding it but withholding her from advanced opportunities/advancement/placements that she is qualified for to hide the fact that he's dating his student and like. spock??? spock's doing that?? so a lot of the stuff that the relationship implied just like made the characters seem out of character to me!
this makes it sound like i dislike aos!spock/uhura which i totally don't! as anyone who knows me well knows. i love critiquing things i enjoy haha. i think im incapable of recommending a 'favorite show/movie/book' without listing the fifteen or so things i didn't think quite worked/landed/etc, so! i really do enjoy the aos reboot movie franchise and i enjoy spock and uhura's dynamic there even if i think it's REALLY different from their dynamic and basis for their tos friendship/connection!
oh and since i referenced kira in this post i'd be remiss without plugging scotty/uhura which almost works BETTER with their reboot characters than tos characters! like unlike spock scotty would be able to draw aos!uhura out and help her find her playfulness and fun! they would balance each other really nicely! whereas spock and uhura in aos just come across as too similar to really work in a relationship -- at least to me!

i know you said you didn't want to talk shit about snw, and i'll try and keep this as like. open as possible bc it still could be rlly good, but if it bothers you at all feel free not to answer lol
i feel like i don't want to see more of the main characters. i loved tos so much, and it feels like a little bubble in their lives that doesn't need explaining or loads of backstory. whatever happens in this, good or bad, it'll be adding stuff into something that was fine to stand on its own for literally 60 years lol. not to say they can never add backstory, but i feel like it has to be unobtrusive and also fitting with the characters, which might be hard in a long show, bc there's so many opportunities to mess up. also we've already had one kirk show, there's not that much need for another one.
that said, if they focussed more on characters that didn't get much attention in tos, like uhura, it might be interesting. it feels less weird if they get more backstory, bc there's not as defined a sense of their personalities (just bc of the amount of screentime they got), so as long as they're sensitive to the original i think it would be fine? i'd still prefer that they just. made new characters for their new show. but it could work.
Yeah no like my thoughts exactly! Like I don’t wanna talk shit (yet) cause like it’s not out and give things the benefit of the doubt blah blah blah. But yeah, it feels kinda unnecessary. I was more okay with it when it was like “yeah, Pike, Number One, Baby Spock, Uhura!” It still didn’t feel necessary, but I could separate it a little more, but like the Kirk thing feels a bit too far?
and like if you wanna do more tos (which I wouldn’t recommend tbh) theres like… a lot of other stuff you could do instead of a prequel. Like there’s a whole series of comic books about the last few years of the “5 year mission” and like I‘ve read some of them and theyre good! There’s also books that take place in different dimensions and stuff (kinda like aos but like less trash, cause they were made by people who cared about Star Trek) But they also have the benefit of being in a different medium so maybe my brain doesn’t connect them with tos as much? Idk.
Yeah I agree with you though and I have a lot of thoughts, but I don’t wanna shit talk before it comes out, because like as unnecessary as it seems, they always could surprise us

Dinner Date? (AOS Spock x Reader)
Tumblr media
A/N: I think this may just be a part one, I do want to continue the story but I was more eager to see if people were interested first. Also this is meant to be read with either a female, male, or non-binary reader! I have been wanting to do a Spock x Reader for awhile now, this is my first time writing one! Enjoy!
Summary: After being hospitalized (and passing out) in Sickbay from a dumb choice you made while on mission, you are surprised to find that Commander Spock had stayed by your side while you slept.
Word Count: 3,338
Warning: Swearing and a sarcastic Bones and cute moments
---
“Shit. Shit. Holy- FUCK!” Was all you could manage to say as a sharp pain twisted into your side. You were currently in Sickbay after having collapsed on the floor just outside of the bridge, nearby crewmen immediately rushed you to a not-so-happy Dr. McCoy.
“Damn it, man, I told you not to eat that planet’s weird berries!” McCoy said in a frustrated tone as he pulled out his scanner. “It’s only been what- two hours? And you are already showing symptoms of infection in your abdominal region that would usually take years to develop!”
“How can you be so sure…” You breathed, gripping at your stomach which started to cramp. “...that it was the berries?”
“Mm, I dunno (Y/N), maybe because of the fact that Jim and I had no berries whatsoever and we seem to be doing perfectly fine. It’s no coincidence, damn it!”
Nausea passed over your body in massive waves, you applied pressure via your fingertips between the two tendons on your wrist in an attempt to get the feeling to cease. You remembered seeing this technique in an article somewhere, but you were pretty sure that the article didn’t take into account your situation. “Well the natives said... that eating the berries was a sign of a... good spirit… a way to connect with them. It’s called respecting...tradition. Something you and the Captain… refused to do.” The fact that it was taking so much energy to construct sentences both amazed and horrified you.
“Maybe those berries weren’t meant for humans.” McCoy grunted, walking out your line of sight. “Just because you're some diplomat representing all of Starfleet doesn’t mean you have to go around eating weird foods for the sake of tradition.”
“Bones,” You declared. “I could really do without the lecture right now.” You only felt worse the longer you laid there, your forehead broke out into a sweat and your face grew hot. You pictured McCoy getting his instruments together from the sound of metal clinking against metal, at least that is what you hoped he was doing.
“Alright! Alright, hold on…” He said, fumbling with what sounded like a plastic bag. “Damn... what would that green-blooded hobgoblin think of this?”
“You mean Commander Spock?” You asked, even though you understood what he meant. “What does he have to do with-” a sharp sting entered the side of your arm as your asshole-of-a-friend, and trusted doctor, injected you with a large syringe. “-Oh, what the hell was that?!”
“That-” McCoy said, holding up the syringe defiantly, “-just saved your life. Well, maybe. Give it an hour or two, your fever should already be going down. The pain will subside in no time.”
“Jesus, Bones, you could have at least warned me before stabbing my arm!"
“Well it’s not supposed to hurt so much without a warning.” You heard him say, but you were more focused on the white walls within the Sickbay, which were beginning to blur into everything else until it became one muddy display. It made your eyelids feel heavy.
“Everything is so abstract looking…” You said half-consciously, watching as different colors danced in front of your vision.
“Well I’m no Picasso, much less a painter,” You heard him say, or maybe you just imagined it. It didn’t matter though, seeing as all the sounds and sights were becoming one big jumble. It didn’t stay this way for long before everything went completely black.
You have been abroad upon the Enterprise for almost a year now, part of its five-year intergalactic planetary voyage. As a Starfleet diplomat, you were stationed on the bridge and tasked with regulating Starfleet protocol and managing peace-treaties and negotiations. Through this job, you befriended many on the Enterprise, especially those stationed on the bridge with you. You were quick to become friends with the notorious (or so he thought) Captain Kirk, as well as others like Lieutenant Uhura and the pilots, Mr. Sulu and Chekhov. There were even people beyond the bridge like Mr. Scotty down in Engineering who you managed to get well acquainted with. You were simply amazed by all these different and infatuating personalities you had come to know, but there was one person- or rather, an alien- who you had come to admire the most aboard your time here.
Commander Spock.
You were only to report on the bridge three days out of the week, the rest of your time was spent helping to ease the tension between antsy crewmen who were getting themselves into disputes and fistfights (even though it was not in your pay grade, and was sure as hell not part of your job description either) and even assisting the Chief Officers in preparation for meetings in the department they resided over (which was part of your pay grade).
It was a small attraction… at first.
The Enterprise was only four months into its five-year voyage whenever the Captain tasked you to assist in preparing and partaking in an introductory meeting (really it was more of a banquet) for the Science Department. The last two months had already taken up your time with meetings (*banquets) in other departments: speaking on behalf of Starfleet, introducing yourself to the staff and crew, helping them adjust to life aboard a starship, answering to millions upon millions questions and concerns. Today would be no different, or so you thought.
You entered the science lab with a clipboard full of notes you were preparing to say in your speech. Contrary to others’ belief, you never used the same speech twice, you took too much pride in your work to do so- except for those few rush jobs where the only thing you managed to have on hand was a speech about how cute yet terrifying Tribbles were. The memory of all those confused faces in the crowd during a Starfleet conference still haunted you to this day. The Admiral was to say, in the very least, displeased.
Awaiting by a table of fliers was the Enterprise’s chief science officer. His back had been turned to you when you entered the lab, and he was still unaware of your presence as you drew closer to him.
“Commander.” you greeted, yet received no reply. That was odd, with you being the only other person in the laboratory besides him, he had to have heard you. Maybe you just weren’t being loud enough. Determined, you took another step closer. “Commander!”
Still, no reply. By now you managed to get close enough to see his face, and you were rather more perplexed to see that his eyes were closed. Odd. You weren’t well educated enough about Vulcans to know if this was some ritualistic standing sleep-like state they put themselves in, but it reminded you of a similar nature that some of the Terran animals back home displayed.
“Just like a horse…” You murmured, before slowly reaching up to touch the Vulcan’s face. You hadn’t realized how close you had gotten to him. He stood there perfectly, his face was so mellow, so clear of emotion, he almost looked like some sort of statue…
A hand caught your wrist before a finger could even graze his cheek, a shock ran through your body, it scared the shit out of you. “What is like a horse?” Commander Spock asked, staring down at you with his full, dark eyes.
You quickly (and embarrassingly) pulled your hand away from his grip, holding it protectively close over your hammering heart. “C-Commander Spock, I-I thought you were asleep!”
“I was not sleeping.” He responded in a calm tone. He straightened his posture and placed his hands behind his back.  “I was meditating.”
“Nervous?” You asked half-jokingly. “The whole department is going to be here tonight, things can go wrong, but it will be alright.” It was apparent you were saying this more for your own benefit rather than his.
“I find it illogical to be nervous.”
“And why is that?”
“Based on what I could gather from your involvement in past assignments, Lieutenant. I trust you are more than qualified to execute this meeting successfully.” He replied with a small smile.
You felt your heart swell at the praise, and you smiled right back.
After that day, you and Commander Spock maintained a mutual friendship: greeting one another with a nod or smile as you passed by in the hallways or having small (but quite educational on your part) talks while riding the lift, it never went beyond that, but you didn’t mind. You felt like your growing attraction for him had to be limited in some way, seeing as his thoughts on you are nothing but platonic.
...Lieutenant?
Lieutenant (L/N)? Can you hear me?
You felt a rough shake of your shoulders, pulling you straight out of the darkness in a start.
“Doctor, I believe that was an unnecessary course of action. The Lieutenant was already waking up.” A familiar voice said.
“You’re overreacting, Spock. (Y/N) needed a jumpstart.” Another voice responded.
You looked around the room quickly, watching as the blurred figures started to take appropriate shape and form. It was Dr. McCoy and Commander Spock, both peering down at you. Immediately, McCoy started to check your vitals asking you clipboard questions like: How are you feeling? Is there any pain when I do this? Commander Spock on the other hand stood idly by with his hands behind his back, his face could be read as stoic if it weren’t for the fact that his eyebrows were furrowed. It actually surprised you to see him here, but you had a feeling that it had to do with the details of your mission.
"Oh man…" you grunted as you sat up slowly. "How long was I out for?"
"Approximately for five hours and twenty-one minutes." Spock responded.
"Yeah, because (Y/N) was so worried about the exact number of minutes they missed." McCoy said with a loose smile, despite the gruff tone in his voice.
"I may not be well acquainted in human social cues, Doctor-" Spock said, turning his gaze on McCoy, "-But I believe you are using sarcasm. In your case, this would not be uncommon."
"Well good job, Sherlock. Seems you cracked the case!" McCoy said with false praise.
Spock went to open his mouth, you could tell he wanted clarification by the way his gaze narrowed, but instead, he diverted his attention back onto you. "How are you feeling, Lieutenant?"
It was a question that surprised both you and the doctor (or maybe he always looked that confused). “I feel fine-” You said abruptly, “Well, at least I think I do. Am I, Bones?” You nervously looked over to your friend.
“Yeah, you’re fine.” McCoy responded, waving his hand casually. “All we had to do was pump your system full of antibodies and just like that, infection was gone. Thank God we aren’t living in the Dark Ages.”
The Commander approached your bedside. “It seems the berries initiated a rapid case of abdominal infection known to your species as colonic diverticulitis. It’s quickening effects seem to have caused a trauma in your nerves, specifically your sensory nerves, leading them to send incorrect signals. Which explains your disassociation with reality.”
“Alright, Mr. Know-it-all, I’m the doctor here.” McCoy said with a grumble, before addressing you. “It just means those berries infected your bowels and started blending your five senses together like one big smoothie.”
“That is rather an inaccurate description, but yes, the Doctor is somewhat correct.” A slight grimace was in Spock’s voice, causing you to smile. The two always had differentiating opinions. Watching them react to one another like highly-active mind fields was quite entertaining.
McCoy only shook his head in irritation, “Which means, (Y/N), no more eating any foreign soul-binding berries, you hear? I mean it.” He was now targeting you, which was not so entertaining.
“Okay. Okay.” You held up your hands in defeat. “I solemnly promise to never eat any foreign soul-binding berries, again.”
“Yeah, well let’s see how long that promise lasts.” He crossed his arms, before a faint smirk appeared on his face. “You know Pointy-Ears here-” he said gesturing to the Commander. “-was worried sick about you. Got here as soon as you passed out, didn’t even leave your side when writing his report to command.”
You felt your face grow hot at the news. He waited here for you? He wasn’t in the landing party with you when you beamed down onto that planet… you didn’t know how to take this news. But knowing you, you must have been overthinking it, he was just being friendly after all. Still, you had to force yourself not to cover your face in shame as you knew it was red with embarrassment. You didn’t want your friend (and doctor) or the Vulcan you had come to like so much see your flustered expression.
“I was merely concerned with the Lieutenant’s well-being, as (L/N)’s superior, I saw it only fitting to stay by their side until they got better.” You heard him say.
When you felt confident enough to look up from your bed sheets you were surprised to see Spock staring straight at you.
“Uh huh…and I’m the king of Mars.” McCoy sarcastically said with a taunting smile that you wish you could smack off his face. He probably didn’t even know what he was embarrassing you by doing this.
“Doctor, the United Martian Colonies is governed by a uniglobal government, it does not have an establish monarchy-”
“How about I get a drink, and you finish that thought later. Alright, Spock?” Bones interjected with eagerness. “(Y/N), you’re free to leave whenever. From your head to your toes, you are medically sound.”
“Thanks to you, Bones.” You replied.
“Please, it’s only my life’s work.” He said, waving his PADD up in the air knowingly. “And if you need me, which you better not, I’ll be in the bar- drinking the day away.” With that, he disappeared out the door.
You turned your attention over to Spock, who had his gaze on the door. You decided it would be best to head out as well, seeing as you couldn’t control your heartbeat, you were sure you looked like a tomato with how frequently your face was turning red. "Well I guess I’m free to leave since my doctor suggested so." You say in a means of farewell.
The bed's mattress shifted under your weight as you slowly began to peel yourself off from it, it took awhile, seeing as the way you had been laying on it for the past five hours made you stiff,
"I have to agree with the Doctor's earlier statement." Spock said, grabbing your attention. "Your actions were reckless and could have been fatal if it were not for him."
"Understood, Commander.” You responded formally as you pulled on your yellow blazer over your tank top. You felt somewhat dejected, but shook that feeling away. He was concerned because he was your commanding officer. That gesture alone should have been satisfying enough.
“I typed up a mission report and sent it to Command, they requested that you send in a report as well.”
“Thank you, Commander.” You replied, grabbing your Command insignia off of the end table before reattaching it to your uniform. “Have the natives of the planet decided whether or not to join the Federation?”
“I’m afraid I do not know. I was... preoccupied at the time.”
He must have been talking about the report. Thinking about it now, it would be best to complete yours now while it was still fresh on your mind. It was only fair to your Commander that you got it done as soon as possible.
“Well I better head-” You started.
“Lieutenant, I was wondering-” Spock also initiated taking another step forward.
The sound of the entry door sliding open stopped you both, it was Captain Kirk.
“I heard what had happened and the natives promised-” Kirk announced as he casually walked into Sickbay. “-they did not know it was potentially fatal to us and assured- am I interrupting something here?” His nonchalant attitude formed into a more devious one as he looked between the two of you.
“Uh, no, you aren’t.” You said quickly. “What did they say?”
Kirk smirked, briefly shrugging his shoulders, before continuing on. “Well everything is all good now. Just about an hour after you were admitted into Sickbay, the natives agreed to join the Federation. Took awhile for them to decide. They sent gifts of apology to you, I had them sent to your room. Of course, if I had known that I would be receiving gifts, I would have eaten some berries too.” He said with a chuckle.
“Captain, that would be highly illogical seeing as the same berries led to the incapacitation of Lieutenant (L/N).” Spock noted matter-of-factly, making you smile a bit. It was well-known that as a Vulcan, his mind-set followed logic to its core, however you couldn’t help but interpret his words as being thoughtful. Or maybe, you were just projecting that into his words.
“And that is why I am in debt to our wonderful Lieutenant, here.” Kirk said with a dramatic bow. “Without (Y/N), the Federation would not have gained a whole planet as its ally today.” You couldn’t help but laugh as you watched your Captain move across the room like some Shakespearean actor (like running on his tippy-toes and bowing), you decided to play along and twirl dramatically over to him before kissing him on the cheek as though his words just meant the world to you. The scene itself caused an eyebrow-raised look from a clearly confused Spock, the expression alone made you two laugh.
“Am I missing something here?” Spock asked, looking between the two of you.
“Nope.” Kirk responded, lazily putting his arm around the Vulcan’s shoulder, “But you know what you are missing? A nice, hot meal. After such a long day, you two deserve a treat. Go grab something in the mess hall together, Captain’s orders.” He finished with a smirk, making your stomach turn. Why would he say it like that? ...Did he know you liked the Commander? But that would be impossible! You never even mentioned to anyone how you felt about Spock… Were you that obvious?
Before you could open your mouth to say anything, you saw that your Captain was already leaving the room. He turned around briefly and gave two thumbs up and an encouraging nod in your direction, but to your surprise the gesture wasn’t aimed at you, but rather.... at the Commander.
You heard a throat clear beside you and turned to see that Spock was looking you in the eyes. Like, really looking at you.
“Lieutenant...” The way his voice wavered suggested… nervousness. He knitted his eyebrows together and his posture became much more stiff, confirming your suspicions. “...do I have your permission to address you by your first name?”
You felt your cheeks burn again at his request. “You do.” Immediately his body relaxed. “May I, in turn, address you as Spock?”
“Certainly, (Y/N).” He said smoothly, you could tell he was testing out your name. You liked it.
You felt a nervousness build up within you, unsure where this conversation was leading to until Spock spoke up again.
“I would like to request your presence tonight in the mess hall for social engagement and dinner.”
And with that your heart was blown ten thousand light-years away.
“You sure our lovely Captain didn’t bribe you to say that?” You asked half-jokingly, trying not to sound like you were just melted away.
“I do not need persuasion with money or gifts to spend an evening with you.”
How he could say such things without becoming a puddle of embarrassment amazed you. You felt giddy as a warm smile spread across your lips. “Then yes, I would love to have dinner with you.”
“I’ll come by your quarters at eight.” He stated, smiling down at you.
“I’ll be waiting.”

June 25: 2x24 The Ultimate Computer
Belated notes on my watch of The Ultimate Computer yesterday.
Kirk’s definitely in Captain Mode today. You can tell when he’s on edge and suspicious and serious.
Yet another old Kirk friend. Does he know everyone in Starfleet?
War games lol. But it’s “not the military.”
Spock is super into this computer.
A-7 Computer Expert Certification.
The crew’s not needed? Wow, okay, this is going to end badly.
“This gadget.” How do you really feel, Kirk?
And there’s Spock literally making faces behind the Commodore’s back. He is soooo that type. He’s like “Jim, are you hearing this? Can you believe this guy?”
I’m insulted on Kirk’s behalf right now. Replacing people with machines so blithely is offensive.
Of course Bones doesn’t like it.
Oh yeah triumvirate walking scene. I love them. it takes so little for me to think ‘what badasses.’ S2 is really stepping up this dynamic in particular.
And Spock is comfortable enough around Bones to be sassy around him
Oh no, the computer is already glitching, and there is no backup and no plan B.... Bones is completely right in his assessment. This is essentially a Titanic situation: way too much hubris involved. Nothing can go wrong so nothing will go wrong so we’ve planned for nothing going wrong!
McCoy has BFF Clearance. He can go wherever he wants.
“It’s the M-5? What happened to Ms 1-4?” Channel #5.
Ahhhh little gratuitous touch to Spock’s arm. They’re In Love.
“There are certain things men must do to remain men.”
“The right computer finally came along.” Damn Bones.
Jim’s suspicions about the computer coming right after that line make it look like he’s jealous that Spock likes it so much.
He’s getting a “red alert right here.” Computers don’t have that kind of intuition.
Jim’s so thoughtful and self-aware. He really cares both about his instincts and about interrogating those instincts for bias and unreasonableness. This is giving me real S1 vibes: the quiet, intelligent, idealized hero Captain at the fore.
This whole scene is perfect, eminently quotable, and sounds exactly like something that could have been written about automation in 2021. You’re okay with it when it’s happening to someone else but then the computer comes for YOUR job....
Uh-h, M-5 is turning off all the lights...
Space merchant marines... good to know.
HOW are the Captain and CMO “non-essential personnel”? The first sign that M-5 is illogical. They should bring some doctor on the landing party mission given that uh humans are going on it and might get injured.
Anyway I can’t wait for Kirk to destroy this bitch and save the day.
Lol it turned off the lights on Bones in sickbay.
Damn, now it’s trying to take Uhura’s job too!
Chekov is so bored.
Spock wants to serve under one man and one man ONLY. Loyalty to one man... sounds like a wedding vow... and Kirk looks so soft...
So, if Spock has to describe to McCoy what that (unnecessary bitchy and catty) “Captain Dunsel” remark means, by saying that it’s a phrase that “midshipmen use at Starfleet Academy,” is this to imply Bones didn’t go to Starfleet Academy?
He’s never felt so at odds with the ship.... a lover’s quarrel...she’s cheating on him with another man...
Jim Kirk, certified Poetry Nerd. He’s such a romantic.
So glad Bones got him a drink so he can return to the bridge and a possible emergency with just a little bit of a buzz going.
Spock in the chair...
Huh, an automated ship with no crew. Interesting concept.
Oh no M-5! She’s got control of the ship and she won’t let go!
Kirk’s face when Enterprise attacks.. the betrayal... his beautiful lady used for mindless destruction.
“Only a robot” ship--! Bones is insulted.
Kirk orders the computer turned off but we’re only halfway through the ep so...
....And the computer is sentient now.
That was the shortest Captain’s Log ever. “The computer has taken over the ship the end.”
Scotty’s like, “...Well what if we just unplug it?”
Okay so now they only have 19 crew.
Spock and Bones are on point today. “Don’t say it’s fascinating.” / “I won’t. But it is... interesting.” This bitch knows exactly what he’s doing.
The computer isn’t a child, guys!
We need powerful computers “so men don’t have to die in space”--like uh that man your computer literally just killed?
I don’t get Daystrom’s logic at all. He talks as if people, like, needed to do work in space, to survive or something. We don’t need to. We want to! We want to go out and meet cool aliens! This guy is no fun.
What is the thing “greater” than fact finding in space that the robots are going to free us to do? Like what is more impressive than SPACE? I don’t even get that.
Time to mix up fake sci fi world-building references with real references! The Nobel and Zee-Magnee Prizes. Sitar of Vulcan.
A theory emerges... the computer acts illogically...Daystrom won’t let Spock near it... I know this isn’t where this is going, but it kind of sounds like they’re implying it’s a scam, lol. He sold an idea he didn’t have so it’s like.. not a real computer.
Spock’s little protege, Chekov.
“We have been pursuing a wild goose.” Aw, bb’s trying so hard to be colloquial. (Also he 100% learned that phrase from McCoy in The Gamesters of Triskellion and now he’s trying it out on Kirk...when McCoy isn’t around.)
“Not to offend you by using the h-word, but... could it be... human?”
Kirk’s really mad at Daystrom now.
The Commodore really set up that dramatic turn to camera there.
Poor Kirk. His ship is being used for evil.
“They can’t destroy the ship, what would happen to the computer?!” Yes, the computer. And the other 19 people and himself but mostly the computer. Daystrom really has lost it.
I love the actor who plays him, though.
“You are great. I am great.” Nothing weird happening here.
Spirk attack! (Spork it out.)
Spock’s way too sure Commodore Wesley is about to die. “He was decent, it’s a shame the ship I’m on is gonna kill him.”
And now another round of Kirk versus the computer and Kirk’s logic wins.
M-5 should argue that it did not commit murder, it committed homicide in self-defense. But then Daystrom didn’t program it with a lawyer’s brain.
It’s uh just gonna leave? Not turn the lights back on?
Kirk is so smart! I know I say this all the time, but it’s true! He knew what to do to save the ship because he knew Bob Wesley. He had formed connections, he had experience and knowledge that doesn’t come from logic. He is not replaceable!
McCoy’s like “Spock, fight me. Debate me Spock. Fight me. I’ll be fun.”
Spock HAS answered the computers versus humans question--he likes humans. He wants to be surrounded by humans.
That was really good! One of the better S2 episodes. Great Kirk, great triumvirate--as a trio and all three sides of the triangle--great sci fi concept, great guest star, great social commentary--still 100% relevant today.
i definitely have to think more about the ‘human computer’ concept. I liked that they specifically went out of their way to explain why the computer was human, how that was part of its design, and then tied that into its creator, his background, his belief system, and his insecurities. I feel like most ‘sentient computer’ or ‘advanced AI’ narratives just assume a computer that’s powerful enough will eventually be alive, which is not something I believe. The scariness of advanced AI to me is the incredible power it has to act quickly, but in a complete black-box way: you can’t literally see the logic string of its thought processes, and nor can you figure them out easily or completely using the creators’ intentions or logic because the machine has ‘learned’ since its inception, and its learning processes are not human. There is a real alienness to them that I find scary. And I do think this ep captured that nuance in M-5: it has the speed and abilities of a super computer, the “human” qualities of its creator for well-explained reasons, and the unpredictability of a mechanism that is NEITHER human nor human-controlled tool. And of course the ep’s ultimate thesis--that humans cannot be completely automated or replaced, and that we should not want to automate or replace humans--is comforting and of a morality I can and want to agree with.
This was also one of those eps that made me curious about the differences in AOS and TOS Kirk--in other words, an ep that relied on his history with Starfleet and his experience, on the reality that he’s a 34 year old man with 15+years of experience in the Fleet. Time, experience, connections, these aren’t things you can replace no matter how smart you are, and I feel like it would have been interesting to see AOS!Kirk deal with some situation that is trickier for him because he’s a Captain with a startlingly small amount of institutional experience. It’s not just about being young or generally inexperienced, in other words--it’s about NOT knowing every Captain, Admiral, and Commodore in the service, it’s about NOT having friends across the galaxy because he just hasn’t had time to make them. Even in deep space, that matters. And I think it’s something that I appreciate more as an adult myself, with actual real world experience of the importance of connections and experience and time, especially in sort of insular or smaller work communities.
Anyway, next is Bread and Circuses! Another great ep for the triumvirate. I can’t believe we’re almost through S2!!
