when i hear "found family" in relation to an ensemble of fictional characters in media there's two different things that could be happening here.
often it's what i think of as forced family, which is like "i found myself in a situation with these people" but a key part of the trope is that, like most families of origin, they're stuck with each other and can't leave without taking extreme action. voyager's "found family" is a forced family. i'm watching m*a*s*h now and it seems that way too. in both cases there's an outside constraint where you literally cannot escape these people and so grow to love them as a result, often in a codependent or unhealthy way but you are closer to them than you will ever be to anyone who did not share this experience. you would sell some of them to satan for one corn chip but god help any outsider who tries to break you up or even understand the situation. sometimes you get lucky and there's a person or two in there that you would choose to spend every day with regardless of circumstance (but would you really? can you even tell for sure??). but also it's "i will never ever speak to you again as long as i live but i'm really bored so can you give me a ride to the 7-11 first."
meanwhile chosen family is more like star trek the next generation where they are placed in this group at random but there's no hostage element to it. any one of them could request a transfer at any time, but they never will because this community and group of people have become an inseparable part of their identity. in both cases they'd saddle up and risk their lives to save each other forever at any personal cost ("not to me, not if it's you") but forced family also contains the element of "i'll fucking do it but christ alive." not every ensemble fits into one or the other but i think it's fun to distinguish as a concept.

Part of what makes Dukat such a compelling character is his core belief in his own superiority and that he is the main character of the universe. This is accomplished through writing but also because Marc Alaimo really, really believed in Dukat as a character. He never plays him with a hint of self doubt. If he experiences opposition to this self image Alaimo plays him as deeply embarrassed, angry or even mentally compromised - all signs of someone who's self hinges completely on this image of himself he has constructed. To the point that any real opposition, like the realisation the universe doesn't revolve around you, crushes him if he can't reconstruct it to fit his own narrative.
Alaimo wanted redemption for Dukat and a romance with Kira. I'm very glad that didn't happen. But the fact that Alaimo never accepted Dukat as fundamentally bad is part of why Dukat works. Dukat can't be redeemed. Not because he doesn't have the opportunity. But because he is fueled by greed and lust for power and that's always behind the choices he makes.
So he needs to be played without self doubt. Without a trace of any remorse. Another actor might have been tempted to play Dukat with cracks in the armor of his bravado where he shows remorse or realisation. Because we want to believe villains have complex feelings about their behavior, right? That deep inside, they doubt? But Dukat always carries this unfaltering belief in himself. He doesn't feel sorry. He doesn't regret anything. In fact, he revels in his crime. In his oppression of the Bajoran people.
It really is interesting how Alaimo having a different view of the character is such a big part of what makes him a good villain.

Pondering the different versions we've had of Kirk, Spock, and Bones.
There's actually no one version of Trek which is flawless. We can set TOS as the gold standard, or we can pick and choose.
For me, it goes like this:
Pine Kirk: best looks. I'm sorry, young Shatner looks pretty nice but he is not in the same league.
Tumblr media
Shatner Kirk: best characterization. Because of the changes in the Kelvin timeline, AOS Kirk is a completely different guy. There are similarities, but TOS Kirk has a gravitas I really like. He's not a kid. He's a starship captain.
Tumblr media
Wesley Kirk: I hated him at first, but I'm starting to see it. You can see Kirk's kindness, his way of getting people to open up to him (even La'an!), his ability to get the best out of people.
Tumblr media
Still, he looks kinda like a muppet. Idk.
Nimoy Spock: best looks. The other two are great, sure, but the cheekbones? The lanky but strong figure? The VOICE?! You can't beat Nimoy Spock.
Tumblr media
Quinto Spock: best characterization. I know, how can you outSpock the original Spock, but bear with me. TOS struggled a bit sometimes to decide who Spock would be. He's serious, deadpan, and then they get bored and spray him with sex pollen or something to get him to do something else. Quinto has the advantage of a serious character arc where we get to see the tension between Spock's feeling and emotion, his human and Vulcan sides. I consider the backstory in the 09 movie absolutely canon for the main timeline.
Tumblr media
My only complaint is, destroying Vulcan is too sad. Seriously, JJ. We can traumatize Spock without throwing a massive complex trauma into the entire universe that every future work is going to have to cope with.
Peck Spock: he certainly is hot, and his voice is much more like Nimoy's than Quinto's is. He does have the tension that Quinto has, though in a less intense form. He's missing a bit, though. Why isn't he greener? Where is your eyeshadow, Mr. Spock? Where is your SASS? As Strange New Worlds continues, I really hope he grows in his ability to sass.
Tumblr media
Bones: honestly??? Kelly and Urban are the same dude. Karl Urban simply becomes Bones. Hard to have a preference of one over the other when they are both so perfect. TOS Bones does have the advantage of looking older, which seems more in character for a guy that grumpy. But AOS Bones is of course much hotter.
Tumblr media
What do you guys think? Am I wrong? Who did these amazing characters best?

silly little headcanon time
since we get to see Spock basically quote Sherlock Holmes, it is now my belief that he's read the books.
Sherlock was Spock's first crush. He found his logic and demeanor interesting and flattering, appreciated the way he never had time for people that weren't willing to listen to him and/or some sort of asset to him. Appreciated that Sherlock plays violin, especially when he needs time to just sit and ponder some big mystery. Found his chemical dependency illogical but could over look it because he was amazing to read about. There wasn't anything Sherlock couldn't achieve with his logic and higher level of thinking. And then Spock grew a bit older and realized that wasn't a crush at all, it was more along the lines of representation. He related to Sherlock, he wasn't crushing on the man. With that knowledge he decided to spend his spare time rereading his mother's old books.
Only on his reread the only character he could seem to pay attention to was Dr. John Watson. The way he acted without thinking, how angry he would get with Sherlock for being so apathetic towards everyone and everything that wasn't the case he was actively involved with. The way Watson seemed to balance out the parts of Sherlock that were disliked by the vast majority of characters in the story. The head strong soldier who was willing to risk it all to help someone in need. He found his infatuation with John Watson fascinating. Eventually he finishes his reread of the old stories and gets caught up in growing up.
He recalls Sherlock Holmes from time to time, typically in passing, often when he looks at a fellow Starfleet officer and says, "Once you eliminate the impossible whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth."
And then he meets the hard headed, fiery, strong willed cadet who already - in his first two weeks in the academy - made a reputation for himself being quick to act, James Tiberius Kirk.

I fully don't understand the Picard dudebro situation.
I was a full on season 1 and 2 apologist. While they had *many* flaws I found bright spots in them. I liked Picard's place as a mentor figure but not quite a father. Queerness. Some of Jurati's autism coded experiences. ELNOR my LOVE. The campiness of sexy Romulan spies. Borg persecution and Ex-Borg life.
But Season 3, plot wise, is objectively the worst. Some fun nostalgia moments? 100%. Shaw's devastation with the Borg? Understandable and moving. Worf x Deanna x Riker energy? Top-tier. Geordi seeing Data again? Melt me.
HOWEVER
Shaw's soft-core racism to Seven? Out of pocket. Killing Shelby and Ro to further the plot? YIKES. Sidelining and practically deleting Raffi and Seven's relationship? C'mon. Dropping Picard's other father-like role characters in favor of Jack? Lame. Jack's "Borg genes"? i get its sciencey wiencey but Borg reproduce by assimilation that's absurd and makes no sense and 100% relies on a very aged bachelor who hates kids accidentally impregnating someone. Terrible plan. Fast-tracking Jack through Starfleet so he could be a cadet on a new Seven ship? Nepo-baby bullshit. And where's Laris? Who fucking knows.
I get the nostalgia. I am a hardcore Worf simp, I melted at his mere existence on screen again. But c'mon. The dudebros saying this was the best season were delusional.
All the seasons had some ridiculous, absurd bullshit. You just give this one a pass because its the cis white guy chosen one hero bullshit you like.
Anyway. If anything I just hope Jeri Ryan gets the spin off series she fucking deserves. I can accept the third season being unecessary lauded as the "best" one for that reason alone.

“You’ll decline my offer of immortality…” Said Q as if shocked. But his emotions were more subtle than shock, a bewilderment and somehow regret and bitter disappointment.
“I want to live out my days as a human, Q.” The answer was simple. It seemed as if saying it to him was nothing. Another day, another dull and uninteresting day for him to live. “And die as a human being.” Nothing could change his mind. No matter how much Q begged and pleaded - as much as Q would be able to do - he would not change.
There was silence.
There were glances that should have carried unspoken words, but it was not enough. Not with Picard, who did not understand the language Q so desperately wanted to use. To speak to him in a way that only the two of them could understand.
But he wasn't the first to break the silence.
Not this time.
“I promise to live out my days with you, Q.” Stern voice was the only thought Q could process beyond the pain that gripped him.
Silence.
“Anything for you, Jean-Luc.” No matter how much Picard's words hurt and no matter how much he wished the reality was different, he was sure of his words. There was no truer truth than what he had said. He would have done anything for him.
And he did.

Vulcan and Human Cultural Differences Part ???
It only. JUST. JUST ENTERED MY BRAIN CASE. Moisture. Vulcans probably don't have mushrooms. OR at least not eating a fuckton of them. Fungi like WETNESS. MOISTURE. DRIPPITUDE. So you get this entire culture of people who are vegetarian by choice and none of these fuckers have had a good shiitake. They are not PREPARED for the (in comparison) MEGA FUNGI on Earth. They have no CONCEPT Of mushroom burgers.
Tumblr media
And I'm just chuckling to myself at the idea of these Vulcans trying to be super stoic when presented with a perfectly vegetarian, mushroom-heavy dish. Like are they disgusted by the idea of eating fungus? Do they have to fight that with LoGIc? Or do they get big mad and have to just push it down because fuck these fucking Terrans and their stupid, delicious, protein-packed mushrooms that will eat you back when you die.

much more context with an episode list below the poll!
more info below by episode (forgive me in advance if i forgot your favorite doctor-evolution episode) (also forgive me for all the mistakes i will immediately see once i hit post but will be unable to fix because we can't edit poll posts):
season one: "i wasn't programmed for any of this!"
"eye of the needle": after kes starts advocating for him, janeway offers him the power to turn himself off, and he asks for a name.
"heroes and demons": he leaves sickbay for the first time and has his first non-medical mission. he's emotionally affected by freya's death at the end.
season two: "before you, i was just a projection of photons held together by forcefields [...] just a profession, not a life."
"projections": he hallucinates an existential crisis about whether he's a human or a hologram.
"twisted": the doctor spends time recreationally with the crew on the holodeck for the first time (though it's not clear if he enjoys it).
"lifesigns": he falls in love with vidiian doctor danara pel. at first he says his program is malfunctioning, but later believes his programming is adapting instead. he also records his first personal log.
season three: "i'm footloose and fancy-free."
"the swarm": his program starts to degrade because he has been expanding it for hobbies like opera and friendships with the crew. he says his program should be rebooted so he can serve his "primary responsibility," but kes and the others convince him that his memories are important to keep. (factoid: we learn his maximum runtime was supposed to be 1500 hours.)
"future's end": mobile emitter time!!! and his first time off the ship.
"darkling": he starts editing his own program (and it doesn't go well).
"real life": he creates a holo-family for himself.
according to the stardate mentioned in "latent image" (see season five), the flashback part of that episode happens at the very end of season three.
season four: "i believe i've earned the respect of the crew as an equal."
"revulsion": we meet our first delta quadrant hologram (and it doesn't go well). this is the first time we hear about holograms being subjugated by "organics."
"message in a bottle": the doctor meets the EMH-2 and reveals that at some point he programmed himself a dick and had sex.
"living witness": we learn that the doctor has a backup module who seems to have the same emotions and self-awareness as the doctor himself (which i take to mean that whatever sentience is now in his program can be duplicated by copying).
season five: "we gave him a soul. do we have any right to take it away now?"
"latent image": we learn the doctor had a holo-breakdown (off-screen in late season 3) after his ethical subroutines could not reconcile his decision to save harry's life over another patient's. at the time, they determined that erasing some of his memories was the only way to repair him. at the end of the episode, after the doctor and seven both argue for his individual rights, janeway decides to let him work through his guilt rather than deleting his memories again. assuming this ultimately works after the episode ends, it means that he was able to overcome a critical programming conflict through introspection and social support instead of altering his programming.
season six: "haven't I earned the right to self-determination?"
"tinker, tenor, doctor, spy": the doctor formally complains that his sentience is not being acknowledged and argues that he should be allowed to grow his abilities beyond his role as doctor. he also wants his potential to be evaluated based on his holographic nature rather than humanoid limits ("my program can be expanded indefinitely. i don't have limits!").
"blink of an eye": he lives for three years on the time dilation planet and even has a son ("it's a long story").
"virtuoso": he tries to leave the ship to become an opera star, choosing his passion (and his ego) over his originally programmed purpose.
side note: "fair haven" and "spirit folk" are both in season six, and that's the first time that anyone (including the doctor) seems to consider the concept that regular holodeck characters might also have some kind of feelings, personhood, or right to continued existence (unlike in season three, when in "alter ego" it's both a joke and a problem that harry falls in love with a hologram, or in "real life" when the doctor is fine with b'elanna reprogramming his family without consulting them).
season seven: "the doctor exhibits many of the traits we associate with a person [...] but are these traits real, or is the doctor merely programmed to simulate them?"
"critical care": the doctor violates the hippocratic oath in his programming by harming a patient to save others, and it does not trigger the ethical subroutine breakdown he experienced in season 5.
"body and soul": delta quadrant holograms are in revolt. the doctor experiences humanoid pleasures and enjoys them.
"flesh and blood": he betrays voyager to save the hirogen-programmed holograms and (temporarily) leaves the ship to join them, "because i'm one of you."
"author, author": a federation arbiter decides that he's not legally a person, but is "no ordinary hologram" and has some limited rights.

Thinking about how Damar killed Ziyal and then ended up the hero of the Cardassian people by the end of Ds9. The murder of Ziyal is not shrouded in any ambiguity. She was innocent and he murdered her.
So how can he end up being a hero? How can we reconcile this view of the Damar that commits a brutal, unforgivable act with the Damar that leads a rebellion and saves his people?
That's a hard question. It certainly comes down to character development. The Damar that shoots Ziyal is shaped by the same values and ideas that created Dukat. Cardassian military man, convinced about Cardassian superiority. But when Damar reaches the height of power under the Dominion, he's wrecked by guilt and the eventual realisation his people are not the rightful, imperial oppressor, but are being subjugated.
He changes and realize, very reluctantly, that Cardassia has to change to. His turning points are all centered around killing people: Killing Ziyal leads to his induction to leadership, killing Weyoun leads to his role as rebellion leader, killing Rusot leads to him finally accepting the new Cardassian reality. So does Kira "forgive" him? Is the audience to forgive him?
I think Ds9 tells us that people sometimes do horrible things and then we all have to live with it. Garak did horrible things, Kira did horrible things, even Sisko did horrible things. Justice isn't easy or smooth and certainly not swift. Maybe Ds9 tells us that there's no dichotomy where we either forgive and forget or we seek absolute justice.
We learn early in episodes like "Duet" that seeing things in black and white, where everyone is either Good or Bad, is not constructive. We learn in "Darkness and the light" that Kira killed civilians working with the occupying forces during her time in the resistance when she had to and also that being consumed by revenge will lead you down a dark path. All those things teaches us that in war, sometimes you don't have the luxury of absolutes. Kira chose to put her personal feelings about Damar aside and work at his side, not because she forgot Ziyal but because that's what she had to do.
It's also interesting to consider Dukat killing Jadzia vs. Damar killing Ziyal and how these horrid acts lead two people on very different paths, but that's best saved for another post.

I was reading through my Star Trek headcanons note in my notes app and came across this and figured I'd post it here cuz why not
So here's my personal ponderings on how I think AOS mcspirk got together, or well, more like how they realized their feelings for each other
-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-
Ok so I'm trying to figure you who fell in love first in this whole mcspirk dynamic
So obviously, Kirk and McCoy was a thing before Spock came along, but who made the first move? Or, did they even get together before they met Spock? Like, they were both definitely in love, but all three of these bastards are stubborn as hell so I'm not sure if they would have even confessed to eachother before the events of the first movie
Ok, but who fell first? That's the question we're asking
So in this, McCoy is still demiromantic (editors note; I headcanon TOS McCoy as demiromantic, but usually I headcanon AOS mccoy as some form of asexual, so that's why I make special note of it here) so my first thought was that Kirk fell first, but we cant forget that that poor boy's been through hell and back already, so he's real slow to trust people
That doesn't necessarily mean that he didn't fall first, it might have just taken him longer to realize he had, honestly he might have not even realized it till McCoy confessed (if I decide to have McCoy confess first)
For McCoy, it was definitely the "A fell first, but B fell harder" situation, like im imagining that McCoy and Kirk were just eating lunch or something, or hell maybe he was just minding his own business at work and then just all the sudden he's hit with "OH FUCK IM IN LOVE WITH HIM" and then he realized that yep, he's very deeply in love with Kirk. And ofc he's fucking terrified of that after the shit with his ex wife, so he just goes "repress feelings: activated" bc he knows Kirk does like to have casual sex and all that, and he probably also knows that committed relationships also scare the shit out of Kirk. McCoy probably thinks there's no way that kirks even attracted to him either bc he's a dingus
And on the flipside, kirk knows that McCoy is demiromantic and has somehow convinced himself that they aren't close enough for McCoy to even consider them anything more then casual friends (keep in mind that this is all academy era) and not to mention Kirk is polyamorous and he's only ever seen or heard about McCoy being in monogamous relationships so he thinks that even if there was a chance, that it still wouldn't work
Little does he know that McCoy is also polyamorous, just not actively practicing bc he's also scared of commitment
Honestly I don't think they managed to figure their shit out till Spock came along and was like "I want to date both of u" and then McCoy and Kirk are like "I love that idea but Jim/Bones would never be attracted to me :(" and then Spocks like "ur a dumbass he's also in love with u" and then there's some emotional confession between the two and then they're all happy
Anywho! I've been contemplating writing some AOS McKirk turned mcspirk but I can't think of a good enough story to actually get the motivation so this is me getting that energy out, but honestly who knows this might just make me actually go and write it 🤷🏻‍♂️

star trek snw s2e?? thoughts on vulcans and very hot teapots.
So, like, I recently started watching the 2nd season of star trek snw (I needed a break after they killed Hemmar)
anyways, I refuse to believe that vulcans expect humans to needlessly burn themselves handeling vulcan teapots without any protection. Like thats just stupid.
Amanda needlessly tortures herself to fit in.

I’ve been thinking about how hard and lonely it must've been for Spock to have grown up half human on Vulcan. Vulcans being the blood purists and xenophobes that they are, who hide behind the concept of IDIC rather than live it, he grew up an outcast. His peers were V'tosh ka'tur, bullying him and insulting his mother. They defied logic, being cruel in their attempts to illicit emotional responses from the young boy to prove he was too human to be true Vulcan.
This poor, half human child had to have been so lonely. Vulcans, eschewing all forms of physical contact and emotional connections, have colleagues and acquaintances. They do not have friends. Spock only had his mother and Michael to fill that ache and need for touch and those emotional connections that are so essential to humans.
Growing up, he tried to push away all semblance of his humanity. In an attempt to prove how Vulcan he was, he opted to complete his kahs-wan, the right of passage for young Vulcans, early. With his faithful sehlat I-Chaya by his side he faced the unforgiving desert alone, narrowly escaping an attack by a deadly le-matya thanks to I-Chaya giving his life in defense.
He was a scion of the House of Surak. Surak being the key and most revered philosopher, he who brought Cthia, Logic, to the Vulcan people, thus saving themselves from self-annihilation. His clan was a most noble clan, the Matriarch being the infamous T’Pau, who was known as the only individual to refuse a seat on the Federation council. As such, it was not only expected, but also required of him to be the pinnacle of logic in order to not bring further shame to his clan. His guilt about failing to achieve pure logic weighed heavily on him for his whole life.
In a fit of human emotion and rebellion, Spock rejected his acceptance to the VSA while giving them the proverbial middle finger when the VSA Council commented on how his mother was a disadvantage yet again, without any protest or defense from his father. In response, to his father’s horror, he joined Starfleet which caused a rift between them that lasted over 14 years.
He was the first Vulcan in Starfleet. His intelligence was not only lauded, but encouraged. However, as Spock said, he was too human for Vulcans, and too Vulcan for humans. His very biology still kept him separate, and marked him as “other.” He still had yet to find his place in the universe.
Spock hit his stride serving as first officer under Pike, who garnered his unerring loyalty. He began to feel acceptance, and grounded in the form of duty to his Captain.
And then came Kirk.
Together, they explored the depths of the galaxy. They learned how to implicitly trust each other while facing the unknown. They built this explicit trust that they both relied upon as they risked their lives together in the line of duty, time after time. Spock began to at least acknowledge his humanity. Together, he and Kirk saved millions of lives together, and changed even more, over the course of their missions. They challenged each other, and they grew in intellect and strength together while embracing each other’s gifts and weaknesses.
For the first time, Spock had found in Kirk the first real friend he ever had. They were friends in a way that can only be cultivated in fire, in trust, in confidence. Friends that fundamentally change who you are for the better.
They formed a deep bond of brotherhood. Spock felt closer to Kirk than any family he had, perhaps save his mother. Their brotherhood went beyond the ties of blood, forged in battle, ready to die for each other.
Before his failed attempt at Kolinar, the sacred process of purging all emotions to obtain pure logic, he called Kirk t’hy’la. He named a bond between them encompassing the words friend, brother, and lover. By that definition, it is only logical to assume that during this voyage together, they also found ultimate and intimate solace in each other.
Live long and prosper, my friends. 🖖🏽

I think it's pretty cool that Spock Prime got tossed into a world where he got to see all his closest friends again. Don't get me wrong, the destruction of Vulcan and everything was awful, and I know he would have been willing to do so much to correct the timeline even though by the time he arrived it was already too late.
But to see Jim, Bones, Uhura, Sulu, Chekov, Scotty, Pike, all of them again?? It must have soothed his soul in a way he hadn't been able to in a long time. There's another universe out there where they're all together, going through life by each other's sides. Which means there is the possibility of even more than just this one.
He had the knowledge that no matter what they all found each other again. And must have known that they would continue to do so, no matter what.
Tumblr media
Look at him. You can't tell me Spock isn't happy to see a younger version of himself getting a chance to live his life out with those people. It takes a deep love for Spock to tell himself to set logic aside for once, to listen to how he feels.

I'll preface this by saying that: a) I haven't seen episode 5 yet . b) I have loved Strange New Worlds so far. It's not perfect but no Star Trek show is. c) I do not, and shall not, participate in any shipping wars, so please don't start any in the notes.
So. I just saw a gif of episode 2:05 of Strange New Worlds and they're making Chapel and Spock kiss? Ugh.Can we please not?
I was really hoping they'd avoid this. To be clear I'm not one of those hardcore K/S shippers that gets mad everytime Spock or Kirk look in the general direction of a woman (bisexuality exists? And so does TOS canon ? And unpopular opinion but Kirk & Spock having some other type of bond than just romance is good too?*ducks behind a table just in case*) It's just that I hate pointless romantic storylines and kind of feel like Chapel's character would be much better off without getting reduced to Spock's ex.Can't Chapel and Spock have some other type of meaningful relationship? Must everything have romance in it? Amatonormativity strikes again 🙄🙄🙄
Also why does every Star Trek media after TOS try to make Spock get more " in touch with his human side" TM? Can't it be his VULCAN side for once? You know the other major part of his identity?
(Also I am sorry but If Spock Must have a romantic interest then liked him better with T'pring. actually. They're doomed but they're cute. They better not give her the annoying ex treatment, she deserves better.
Not a shipper but now that I think of it I would take a well-written Spock/Kirk/T'Pring AU .That could make for some interesting relationship-and cultural dynamics)
