This is a really tough choice, but I'd have to say my favorite Data episode is Genesis. It's a crime that we didn't get to see him flex that Honors in Exobiology more often, but I'm very glad we got to see him go into full biologist mode for this episode. Also, as a biologist, I found the whole premise of the episode so interesting & fun, as well as actually reasonable & plausible. It also has some of my favorite funny moments of all TNG episodes, like the part where Data tells Picard he's going to de-evolve into a pygmy marmoset & when de-evolved Worf tries to break down the Sick Bay door (another hilarious instance of Worf losing his battle to doors 😔) before chasing Picard around the ship. An absolute gem of an episode all around, in my opinion.

Finally caught up with Lower Decks and Strange new worlds.

Lower Decks continues to be a delight, though something about Quark wasn't Quark. I can't quite put my finger on it. Maybe bc its so many years later he just didn't sound like himself? Idk. It was beyond fun to see him and the bar and the station regardless.

Strange new worlds was a lot more fun than I expected! The episodes being more one shots was very good. Especially the one where they all became story book characters. Very Star Trek. Uhura is AMAZING, Kirk was horrendous, Hemmer deserved better.

Finally got a chance to start watching Picard Season 3. Just over halfway through, and I definitely have some Thoughts.

Riker is my favourite character this season! I feel like Frakes had made some great acting choices here: the familiar Riker charm with a bit of an edge, sort of quippy but haunted.

Could use a whole series about Captain Shaw. Loved the wolf 359 backstory

Great to have the original TNG cast back, but feels weird to see them in aged form! (Conveniently ignoring that I’ve also aged 30 years since I started watching Star Trek)

It’s ridiculous any time anyone refers to Jack Crusher as “the Boy”. He’s clearly a grown man 🤷🏻‍♀️

This raw chicken flesh version of the changelings is super gross 🤢

Vadic’s weird greasy hair, also gross. The actress is doing a great job, I just can’t stand to look at her

Really like all the musical callbacks to previous films/shows. Especially the Klingon motif when Worf shows up and the First Contact theme at the end credits. The score sounds more authentically “Star Trek” overall

I think I’m enjoying it more than previous seasons, but I fully expect to be disappointed by the end, lol

maybe the problem w remakes of old kitschy sci-fi shows is that sci-fi means something fundamentally different than it did when these stories were made, it's almost a different genre now bc the level of fantasy dramatically goes down the more scientists do the shit we were dreaming about. If u wana do justice by trek u need to remember that it was almost entirely about magic. Automatic doors were magic. Food recycling was magic. people hanging out in space for long periods of time was magic and thats why they dressed like gay cyber wizards and that's why if u don't let them dress like gay cyber wizards ur missing the point

So much of Garak as a person starts to make sense once you know his childhood was a fucking gothic novel. His main playground was a graveyard and he'd play pretend by perfoming improv eulogies to an imagined audience. For a long time his main touchstone for most important figures from recent history is 'oh yeah I know about that guy my dad buried him. great flower arrangements for that one'. He finds out later his 'parents' are actually a brother and sister who had to get married to avoid the utter shame and social devastation of having a child born out of wedlock, and they live in the basement of his biological father's house. (the madwoman in the attic vs. the tiny elim in the basement.) His biological father calls himself his uncle and locks him in a closet whenever he fails to live up to his insane and unpredictable expectations and everyone just has to act like that's normal and expected, and his will hangs over everything at all times, unseen but always felt keener than anything else. The father who actually raised him grows the world's most beautiful (and as it turns out, most poisonous) orchids and keeps the mask of a god hidden in a box in his work shed. Everyone in the house is choking down secrets like it's the only air they know how to breathe anymore.

What I'm saying is that right from the get-go this guy never had the faintest shot at turning out normal, so I'm glad that by middle age he's found a way to get a bit silly with it as he continues to be deeply deeply not normal about anything ever <3
