Positive Munday Meme - Accepting!
Tumblr media
I could've taken the easy, or possibly less embarrassing, way out of this and just put Dance the Night, or Shake It Off, or any of Cascada's charted songs in the mid-2000s.
But no. I'm going for one of my OGs.
youtube
This and Spice Up Your Life will have me dancing. In my seat, at someone's wedding, etc. With this in mind, the Spice Girls reunion at the London Olympics was my Superbowl Halftime Show.

If you had a TARDIS for one day, where would you go?
David: I’d go to the first performance of Hamlet at the Globe Theatre and figure out if anyone thought it was any good back then.

Real interview to make up for the fake one (don’t know if you’ve seen this one yet) https://www.attitude.co.uk/culture/david-tennant-on-the-spice-girls-spiceworld-movie-was-being-developed-before-they-even-released-a-single-459815/
This is so good. Thank you. Potentially the funniest thing he’s ever said

What do you make of David sayin he’s an ally, not an active participant (in queer subcultures)?
Did he come out as straight? I’m not sure anyone has ever asked him directly, not that he needs to give any explanations, I’m just curious because he gives off such a queer vibe even when he’s been married forever.
https://www.attitude.co.uk/culture/david-tennant-on-the-spice-girls-spiceworld-movie-was-being-developed-before-they-even-released-a-single-459815/
Tumblr media
Oh, my Asks/DMs have been blowing up over this one. I did have a chance to read this interview with David (is it me, or is he doing nonstop press lately?) and...wow. Definitely enjoyable, and noticeably more unhinged/queer than most of his other interviews (which makes sense, given that Attitude is an LGBTQ-focused publication). But let's get a screenshot up of the most talked about bit, so we can discuss:
Tumblr media
Obviously there is a lot going on here, so I'm just going to go with what stood out to me most. I don't think there is anything in the world less surprising than David naming bears first, given certain preferences of his (which I've discussed several times previously on my blog).
What's really interesting though is that the question was asking about queer subcultures, but all of the ones David listed are used primarily (AFAIK, though someone please do correct me if I am wrong) in mlm/gay male relationships. "Queer" can be many things, after all--gay, lesbian, bisexual, pansexual, ace--and yet when David heard "queer subcultures" he specifically went for the mlm/gay ones, and that definitely feels like an interesting choice.
The second thing that I felt was worth discussing is that a lot of the reactions I've seen to this is people saying how adorably clueless David is, or how "he's a little confused, but he's got the spirit." And I'm sort of perplexed by this because we are talking about an almost 53-year-old man here, and I believe he knows damn well what all of those terms/subcultures are.
It's been brought to my attention (from what I would consider a very trustworthy source) that David is not at all as technologically illiterate as he pretends to be. Instead, it's actually part of a persona that he puts on to avoid dealing with issues that would arise from people knowing he is online. I had an inkling of this just from Georgia saying David was the one who set up all the equipment for when they filmed Staged at home (because why would such a task be put in the hands of someone who is hopeless with technology?). But having this confirmed also aligns with David creating a fake personal assistant in the early days of his career so he wouldn't have to fulfill certain social obligations, and to put a barrier between his real self and the world.
So why, then, wouldn't the same pattern possibly apply here?
I know there also tends to be this image of David as a "bumbling, goofy dad" type, and that's definitely part of him and what makes him so charming. But I don't think he is a fool, either--especially not after listening to him talk about Shakespeare or politics or anything else at length--and I think he certainly knows how to answer these types of questions. I think David is more than clever enough to give answers that are cheeky but not revealing, because he knows the purpose of all this is to promote the BAFTAs, not to be a deep, probing exposé on the life and times of David Tennant.
Which then brings me to the big, gay elephant standing in the middle of the room--a.k.a., "I'm an ally rather than an active participant." (Again...so many interesting word choices going on here, and none of it feels like an accident.)
Going back to what I mentioned about the focus of these interviews, I'd like to point out one notable thing that David himself said in the Radio Times interview earlier this week:
Tumblr media
This, I think, sums up what we are seeing in all of these interviews: The version of David that he feels is safe to present to the world. He makes it clear as well that he is not going to reveal areas of his personal life while up on stage, and I would say that the same thing applies to these interviews. (It also speaks volumes that in the year 2024, the version of himself he feels safe presenting in these interviews is one who fully knows what bears and twinks--sorry, twinkies--are.)
So no, I don't think David is coming out as straight. I don't think he's coming out as anything, in fact, because he knows these interviews are not the place for that to happen. And I think that saying he is an ally but not an active participant makes the most sense as an answer for a public interview, but neither that nor being in a straight-passing relationship necessarily makes him any less potentially queer.
To reiterate what I said above, there is no one way to be queer. For some people, being queer absolutely can mean going to leather bars and participating in subcultures. But for other people, "queer" can mean something very different. It can mean being a Kinsey 2 just floating along doing your thing until you meet that one person who changes everything. The person who makes you go, "I've usually been more into this and not as much into this...but I'm definitely into you." It can mean being attracted to/falling for someone--a co-star, maybe?--that you never expected to feel that way about. And if David is queer, maybe that also means not shying away from anything, but at the same time not wanting to take the spotlight off the awards and the nominees celebrating one of the most important nights of their lives.
Those are my thoughts on the Attitude interview and David's answers, at any rate. Happy as always to hear from my followers with your takes. Thank you for writing in! x

Okay I LOVED the Barbie movie. It was friggen delightful. Reminded me how I felt when I saw spiceworld, just happy.
So much crap is so serious now and the world is a giant dumpster fire and I’m feeling so lost and not myself and it was nice to just have 2 hours that made me smile and forget about life.

Just found this wonderful interview with our soft Scottish hipster gigolo.
Please read. It’s delightful! 🥰🥰🥰
Also I agree, Common People by Pulp is a great karaoke go to. I’d love for him to be on Masked Singer and sing it.

Girls’ Generation’s Harin Reveals Her “First” Everything | Teen Vogue
posted: 17 july 2021
word count: 1.0k
warnings: none that i can think of
an: i was too lazy to make a youtube thumbnail. so sorry, so sorry. words in bold are korean. feedback and reblogs are much appreciated 💐
harin’s masterlist // interviews
Tumblr media
“Hi, I’m Harin,” she introduced herself, waving at the camera. “And I’m here with Teen Vogue to tell you about my firsts.”
[First thought today]
“It’s five a.m.” Harin laughed. “I woke up at five a.m. and I checked the time on my phone and I was pissed. I was livid. My actual first thought definitely had cuss words upon cuss words in it, but somewhere in there, I thought ‘It’s five a.m.’”
[My first CD]
Harin blew raspberries as she thought. “I don’t know.” She shook her head slightly as she laughed. “Oh, wait! I think it was Spiceworld by Spice Girls. Yeah, it was.” She nodded enthusiastically. “My dad and I went out and we passed a music store and I asked if we could go in, he said yes, I saw the album, that’s that. I don’t even think I was a fan of Spice Girls. I think I just wanted–” she chuckled as she continued speaking– “to buy something. I ended up being obsessed with them, though, so… Thanks, dad.”
[First Role]
“My first role is– so not a lot of people know this, actually.” She laughed. “In The Parent Trap, I played tie-dye girl.” She sucked her teeth. “Um, my mum’s colleague’s daughter, or something, was a casting director and she told my mum’s colleague about the movie and that they were looking for an actress to play the… um, Annie and Hallie and I jokingly asked my mum if I could audition and she jokingly said yes, so my mum’s colleague sent her daughter my audition tape and I didn’t get the roles because I was too young. I was, like, eight years old, I think. But I was asked to send in another tape for tie-dye girl and I got the role and went with my dad to live in Crestline for a month, I think it was.” She sighed. “That’s how I started in the showbiz industry. And then I didn’t act for eleven years.”
[First time I was recognised in public]
“At a convenience store in 2008,” Harin answered quickly. “It’s still to this day one of my favourite fan interactions. I was with Yuri, my member,” she explained, “and we were just getting snacks for our dorm and this little girl — she couldn’t have been older than six years old — she asked if we were Girls’ Generation, we said yes and her mum told us that she had been practising the dance to Into The New World and asked if she could show us, which…” She stared at the camera. “She could’ve said she wanted to show me a knife trick and I would’ve sat down and watched her. But we sang the song so she could do the dance and she was so cute!” Harin cooed, furrowing her eyebrows. “I genuinely wanted to ask her mom if I could keep her. I wonder where she is now. She’s gotta be, like…” She twisted her face as she calculated. “Eighteen or nineteen? That’s mental!” Harin stared at the camera, her mouth dropped open.
[First job]
“My first was, technically, The Parent Trap, but I babysat.” Harin nodded, smirking. “I was in the drama department in school and we needed to pay for the costumes we’d wear so I babysat on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday to make money. I was going to also babysit on Sundays, but, in my house, Sundays were rest days. My dad wouldn’t do work, my mum had the day off, my brother lounged around at home so I quickly realised that babysitting then would not work because everything was so chill so I didn’t want to work,” she explained. “Sometimes people would pay me extra if they absolutely needed a babysitter on a Sunday, though.”
[First person I text when I get exciting news]
Harin laughed. “This one is… I tell my family,” she answered after thinking for a moment. “And my members. But I usually tell them after about a week,” Harin admitted, lowering her head in shame. “I’m so used to not telling people my business,” she explained as she raised her head. “Everybody hates it, but I like to keep things to myself before I tell others. I like to enjoy things by myself.”
[First song I wrote]
“I think it was called Snowflake,” she answered. “And it was about how I missed the snow when my family moved to Brescia. I wrote it kind of like a musical theatre song because I had been watching so many musicals, so it was very dramatic.”
[First tattoo]
“My first tattoo is my last name, Jang,” Harin revealed. “I got it with my parents when I was nineteen. They came to Korea and my mum was like ‘Let’s get a tattoo!’ And I was like ‘Let’s do it!’” She laughed. “My brother also got the tattoo when he turned eighteen.”
[First big splurge]
“It was a bag, that cost ₩400 000. I got it for my mum for Mothers’ Day in 2010 and immediately after swiping my card, I felt the money leave.” She laughed. “My chest got tight, I felt dizzy… When I got in the car, I just laid down across the backseat. I hope that bag becomes a family heirloom.”
[First role model]
“My first role model was my mum,” Harin answered, smiling sweetly. “She worked really hard and I was just always in awe of her. I still am! I keep telling her she doesn’t have to work so hard anymore and that I can take care of her and my dad, but she insists. We’ve had our disagreements, of course, but I love her so much.” She nodded.
[First pet]
“My parents already had a cat when I was born. His name was Hoochoo. Which means Pepper because it was grey.” Harin cleared her throat. “We gave her to my aunt when we moved to England, though. Apparently, I cried and wouldn’t let go of him,” she admitted with a laugh.
“Thank you so much for watching,” she said, doing the outro. “I hope you enjoyed getting to know a bit more about me. Don’t forget to check out my solo debut, These nights and don’t forget to subscribe to Teen Vogue. Bye, I love you darlings. Mwah!” Harin blew a kiss to the camera before waving goodbye.

So I LOVE the "Spice Bus from Spiceworld" vibes that come from the way each Star Twinkle girl decorated her room on the rocket
Tumblr media
Hikaru's is an extension of her room at home - lots of books, cute stuff, stars, posters about space exploration, an old-school TV with rabbit ear antenna...so fun. Her room at home has big "Arnold's room from Hey Arnold" vibes too.
Tumblr media
Lala doesn't have a ton of ornamentation or anything - that's probably not how they do things on her planet - but she does have the little heart motif that shows up on her antenna holders, sleeves and gloves, plus what looks like a drink thermos and some other container. Her shelves have doors on them to keep anything inside nice and tidy. She can keep tabs on things with the big screen readout on the wall.
Tumblr media
Sweet Elena gets to have her own room! At home, she undoubtedly has to share with at least one of her siblings, I imagine, and so this is a BFD for her. It's so warm and cheery just like her - looks like she brought a framed photo, a bouquet of roses and sunflowers, a potted cactus and some cozy pillows.
Tumblr media
To Madoka, who lives in a mansion, this is basically a shoebox - but she gets to decide how to decorate it, which might not be the case at home. She has an elegant and traditional look with a fringed floor lamp and a desktop version of an analog clock. Her cabinet has a door too. She also has flowers at her desk, along with framed artwork.
And if you HAVEN'T seen the cinematic masterpiece that is Spiceworld (1997) then first of all, GO DO THAT, and also here's a (low-quality) clip that shows the interior of the Spice Bus with each space tailored to each Girl's personality.
youtube
(It also includes one of my favorite jokes from the movie, which is Victoria wondering what to wear - the little Gucci dress, the little Gucci dress or the little Gucci dress. Iconic.)
They also talk about their horoscopes and star signs, which feels very pertinent to Star Twinkle as well lol.

'From Hamlet to the tenth and fourteenth incarnation of the Doctor, David Tennant’s stellar acting career has seen him excel in many a huge role, with his latest as host of the 2024 EE BAFTA Film Awards.
However, he now faces his biggest challenge to date: sitting in the hot seat for Attitude’s fabulosity test. How will he fare? Hint: he has some explosive Spice Girls insider info that will send fans into a spin.
What’s your go-to BAFTA red carpet look?
It’s nice to wear a kilt. And yes, I would wear it the traditional way.
Remember not to do any handstands. 5/5
What’s the juiciest BAFTA after-party gossip you have?
I don’t go to them. They’re too loud, and I can never remember anyone’s name.
We think you’re holding out on us. 2/5
What BAFTA category would you invent for yourself?
Best jumper.
Confirmed winner — his jumper is amazing. 5/5
Who’s the most famous person in your phonebook?
I have a former prime minister, but I can’t tell you which one for security reasons!
Swapping memes with a former PM? 4/5
If you had a TARDIS for one day, where would you go?
I’d go to the first performance of Hamlet at the Globe Theatre and figure out if anyone thought it was any good back then.
Do let us know. 3/5
Did you give Yasmin Finney any advice when you worked with her on Doctor Who?
I didn’t feel like I needed to. Yasmin is all over it. Yasmin is a force of nature. It was a joy to get to know her.
Potential Doctor material? 5/5
What’s a fact about Olivia Colman we may not know?
She’s entirely bald.
This explains so much. 3/5
Whose face should be on Scottish banknotes — Lulu’s, Susan Boyle’s, or Lawrence Chaney’s?
Just so it’s the most aesthetically pleasing, it should be Lawrence, though I’d love to see any of those three on any banknote, to be honest.
It’d be a shame to spend them. 5/5
How many Spice Girls have you met?
I met all of them before they were famous, when they were just called Spice. They came to my house. I knew the person who was doing the first draft of their movie. That person was later replaced, and somebody else wrote the movie, but they were hanging out because the movie was part of the original deal that they got with their record deal, so it was being developed before they even released a single.
This is exclusive material! 5/5
What did you all do? Did you play Jenga?
I think I just made tea. Geri was the most vocal, but they were all just sweet. I later saw the ‘Wannabe’ CD single in Our Price and went, ‘Hang on — that’s those five girls!’ I’ve told Sporty, Baby and Ginger this story, but none of them remember, so it obviously didn’t mean as much to them as it did to me!
But it means EVERYTHING to us. 5/5
Who deserves official national treasure status?
My wife. There’s nobody more extraordinary or able, capable, or wise. We’d all be up shit creek without a paddle without her.
Adorable 💗 4/5
What’s your idea of the perfect night?
Having a night off with a takeaway and something good on the telly. I saw the new Masked Singer recently, which was terribly exciting, with Dionne Warwick. It was amazing that she showed up — I thought she was dead!
Ms. Warwick will never die. 3/5
What would you sing if you were on the show?
My karaoke go-to was always ‘Common People’ by Pulp. I have a certain affinity with the Jarvis Cocker look and feel, so I think I could do that quite well.
We can see it. 3/5
Can you quote three lines from Mean Girls?
I’ve seen the musical, but I’ve never seen the movie, actually. Is that possible? I know it’s big in our house and our 12-year-old loves it and my wife loves it, but I saw the musical and it was great.
You’re missing out, David. 2/5
How many queer subcultures can you name?
I’ve heard of bears — that’s an old-school one, isn’t it? And ‘twinkies’? Oh, and daddy. Is that what I would be? I’m an ally, rather than an active participant.
‘Twinkie’ is now the official term. 3/5
David Tennant has never seen Mean Girls, but he’s a font of Spice Girls exclusives and is a Yasmin Finney superfan, so we can forgive anything.
Rating: 75% Attitude'
