WIP Snippet Game: Taken (Eomer x Reader)

I was tagged in a few snippet games last month, but I haven't had anything decent to share until now!

Snippet from Taken, Part 3

It is only for several weeks, you told yourself, to ease the weight of doubt that sat upon your chest. As you turned to walk back toward the cottage, a fierce wind rose and ripped off the cloak that was loosely draped over your shoulders. With a startled cry you grabbed for it, but not quickly enough to save it from landing in a large puddle. You retrieved the soaked fabric from the mud with a sigh. A fat raindrop landed squarely on the top of your uncovered head, and was immediately followed by another and another. Spontaneous rain had been pouring on and off over Gondor since the King’s coronation, and you heard the locals welcome and praise this tumultuous weather as a blessing, a sign of war’s filth being washed away to cleanse the lands for rebirth.  Shielding your eyes from the sudden deluge, you looked up at the roiling clouds overhead, further entranced by the sight of jagged lightning flashing over the White Mountains.  But when your gaze dropped back down to the horizon, you were alarmed to notice a horsed figure crossing the fields through the storm, approaching fast, in your direction.  It was him. Without proof of his face or voice, or even the support of logic, you just knew. It was him.  The very thought of that froze you, mind and body, in place. Pale and immobile and increasingly drenched, you stood like a deeply rooted tree while the rider drew closer and closer, on a horse powerful enough to sustain its determined gait over the sodden ground and lashing winds. Dumbfounded and dazed, you remained, until at last he came to a stop just several yards away. He dismounted Firefoot, his heavy boots squelching in the muck, and that sound snapped you to your senses.  “My lord,” you rushed forward with the soiled cloak twisted uselessly between your hands. “The stables are around the back. Let me take Firefoot there while you get out of this rain.” “I shall stable him,” Éomer said sternly, but not unkindly, to warn you against arguing. “Go and wait for me inside the house.”

I am so happy this story has resonated with readers and Éomer lovers, and I am so grateful to everyone who continues to support it even though I'm so very slow with updates.

Hi there! Thank you for asking about this one! You made me write a little more.

This WIP is a post-Darkening fic to explore the grief Nerdanel feels in the wake of her husband and sons taking the Oath, the news of the Kinslayings, and their sailing for Beleriand.

Word count: 145

That thing is stalking her again. Prowling in the shadow beyond where her eyes can see. No one listens to her when she speaks of it. Nerdanel is half-mad, they say when they think she is beyond hearing them. She, in the courtyard; they, in the upper balconies of her father’s house. She needs rest and quiet and time. But it is real. She knows it is real. Like all the parts of her that Fëanor had loved, it does not know how to retreat. It will consume her. It is only a matter of when. She moves with restless energy when all the house sleeps. Walking in the blunt darkness of the wilting gardens. No light Telperion sheds on her path and her eyes strain to see in the more subtle glow of stars. The stone path is so cold under her bare feet.

Thank you @fishing4stars for tagging me in this little challenge! Your snipped motivated me to work on something I haven't been working for quite a while now.

Remember All Is Fair in Love and Trade? If you do, this snippet comes from a new chapter I'm working on. Yes, really.

“Hey, Balin, What about the third reason to drink?!” Lord Dain slams his ale mug on the table. “I’m gettin’ thirsty here!” A sturdy-looking lady who sits next to him tugs at his tunic. A scar runs across her tattooed face, and you recognize her at once. Ulfhild. One of the fiercest warriors in the Iron Hills, her war hammer crushed many Orc skulls in countless battles. My bonnie wife, as Dain fondly calls her. “The third reason to drink?! You mean the third reason for you to get hammered and have a week-long hangover?!” Dain’s bonnie wife interjects, causing a wave of chuckles. “Only if ye’ll drink with me, my dove!” her husband places a wet, loud peck on her bearded cheek. Lord Balin nods politely after the chuckles subside, “Ah yes, the third cause for our merriment. I am greatly honoured to announce a joyful event. I have known our King since we were but wee bairn. That is why it warms my heart to share wonderful news with you. We are to…” “I’m dying of old age here, Balin!” Dain jumps from his chair onto the table, kicking some plates to the side and stepping right in the middle of a roasted deer on a platter. Needless to say, the aforementioned deer gives way with a soft crunch under the heavy iron sole of Dain’s boot. You can’t stop yourself from chuckling discreetly, and neither can Thorin. “Listen, everyone!” the lord of Iron Hills exclaims, his voice echoing against the walls of the chamber. “My dearest cousin, King Thorin II feckin’ Oakenshield,” he gestures at the dwarf you are madly in love with, “had the audacity to steal my best advisor right from under my nose!” he sends you a wink. “Isn’t it outrageous?!” Lord Balin clears his throat and says with a benevolent smile, “I’m not getting any younger either, dear Dain.” Some of the guests chuckle.  “I’m gettin’ to the best part! I’m talking about Ragna, the poor lass!” Lord Dain points at you, and all the eyes in the chamber turn to you once again. “I have no bloody idea what she was thinkin’, but she agreed to wed King Oaken Head here and now she’ll have to see my cousin’s ugly mug every single day!”

Had to do some traditional sketches amidst forcing myself to relearn procreate.

So have some Eurasian wolves done at like, 3:30am as well as some limited color palette character doodles and me testing inks. I wonder if any of my followers recognize the two guys...Because I might be thinking about reworking that story into something original rather than a fanfic. Which is why the one spelling is a bit off...

He flicked the latch on the gate, but grabbed the top of it with his large hand before letting it swing open, blocking the entrance so you were stopped beside him. The look he gave you was stern, adding to the flurry of excitement already pulsing wildly through you, and his voice held a tone that made you hold your breath and your skin tingle, feeling the light, humid breeze tickle the sweat on your legs as your less-than-innocent sundress moved with it.

Tell me about one of your wips! Anything that's on your mind?

Thank you for the question! I have so many WIPS. I wish I could speak about every one of them. I am torn between talking about the one that is currently my obsession (hurt/comfort modern romance à la "Pretty Woman") or one of the two LOTR fic.

After thinking about it, here it is. The Momentous Wedding. It began as an answer to @konartiste who wanted someone to tell a few things to Denethor's face. I thought Eowyn might be the perfect vessel for all our outrage. And wrote this quick thing. It is in an AU of course.

Then I wanted to add more, to have a whole scene, with some more interaction between Eowyn and Denethor. Problem is, now I am planning to add: Merry and Pippin, because I am convinced those two would have been present at this wedding. And, in my headcanon, they brings hobbits gifts but also share some of their traditions with the young couple. I want to see what happens around this wedding and so dive in viking weddings and found a few traditions, both for bride and groom that would interesting. I want to see Faramir having to go through a kind of "initiation" because he is not from Rohan AND the people there are not just going to handle their best woman to him just like that. There will be games and challenges. I also want to add this little scene with Eowyn and a certain lonely bust in a library. I also have this relation between Lothiriel and Eowyn and thus let people discover how I see Lothiriel. I also want to describe a bit about Gondor or maybe Ithilien...

But I am still working on it. So, it is far from finished. none of those scenes are written, just notes and bits here and there.

All those ideas came from discussion with @konartiste, @from-the-coffee-shop-in-edoras, @frodothefair, the exchange between @scyllas-revenge and @sotwk, as well as @torchwood-99. I hope I didn't forget anyone and if so my humble apologies. this work is begining to look like a community piece of art and, to be honest, I am very happy with this. I just hope that what I write will be good enough for all those great ideas I received.

1. How many works do you have on Ao3? 36

2. What’s your total Ao3 word count? 2,583,909 (just about everything i write tends to go novel length and when my muse cooperates, look out!)

3. What fandoms do you write for? Tolkien - The Hobbit and LOTR, and most of the characters played by Richard Armitage.

4. What are your top five fics by kudos? After the Fire, More Than Meets the Eye, Brilliant Disguise, Where I Belong, In This Moment

5. Do you respond to comments? Almost always. It might take me a while, but I try to respond to every one.

6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending? That would be The River which was a short piece of about 3k words that takes place right before Thorin starts out for the Shire and the Quest to retake Erebor.

7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending? Pretty much everything else (Where I Belong is more bittersweet than flat out happy). I write romance and one of the hard and fast rules is an ending that is either happy or happy for now. And I am an absolute sucker for a happy ending.

8. Do you get hate on fics? Not so much hate, but useless criticism (and yes, unless a writer has specifically asked for a critique, criticism is useless so save yourself the time and trouble and don't bother with it. Don't like something, don't agree with it? Write your own story how you want it. I'm not even nice about that any more.)

9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind? Sure. I write steamy in general, but Good Trouble, The Chance You Take, Playing with Fire, Damaged Goods, Miss Fortune, Seven Days, and Better Days are the smuttier of my fics.

10. Do you write crossovers? What’s the craziest one you’ve written? I've written crossovers for Richard Armitage characters - Guy of Gisborne/John Porter

11. Have you ever had a fic stolen? I doubt my fics are good enough for anyone to steal, so I'm thinking no.

12. Have you ever had a fic translated? I'd be very surprised if I have.

13. Have you ever co-written a fic before? No, and I don't know that I'd be able to do it, either. I'm far too set in my ways and doing things the way *I* think they should be done and telling the story the way *I* see it.

14. What’s your all time favorite ship? Thorin x OFC

15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will? I don't have any. I almost never orphan a story. It might take me literally years to finish it, but it will be finished.

16. What are your writing strengths? I write fast and clean (meaning my edits/revisions are usually minimal) and judging by a lot of the comments I receive, I write very good and natural dialogue

17. What are your writing weaknesses? I sometimes have trouble slowing action down, as I usually want to get right to the meat of the story. I also can't always translate the images in my mind to the words on the page.

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic? I write using other languages sparingly - usually just enough to give the reader a feel for the character. It's too easy to fall into linguistic stereotypes otherwise.

19. First fandom you wrote for? Marvel. Loki, specifically.

20. Favourite fic you’ve written? This one is a three-way tie between More Than Meets the Eye, After the Fire, and Something in the Night, (my current WIP) because all three have heroines who are very unique - Arielle is not only trying to pass herself off as her twin brother, but she rambles when she's nervous, Jasna is a medical student who stutters, and Nina is a bounty hunter seeking revenge against a certain dwarf king. All three were and are fun to write.

1. How many works do you have on AO3? 82.

2. What’s your total AO3 word count? 128,198.

3. What fandoms do you write for? Currently mostly Tolkien, with the occasional dash of Timeless and Narnia.

4. What are your top 5 fics by kudos?

As the Hare Flees Before the Wolf (T, Celegorm & Eöl, 1.8k): Curufin is not the only son of Fëanor Eöl meets upon the plains of Himlad. Or, Eöl meets Celegorm while pursuing Aredhel and Maeglin, and things go very badly for him.

Here at Journey's End (G, Frodo & Legolas, 1.6k): They stay for those they love.

West, West Away (G, Sam & Thranduil, 3.6k): Sam meets an unlikely kindred spirit on the journey West.

and I will love with urgency, but not with haste (T, Aegnor/Andreth, 3.1k): A summer evening spent in a glade near the shores of the Aeluin.

with death on his brow like a crown (G, Aegnor & Finrod, ~600 words): Five times Finrod foresees Aegnor’s death, and one time he foresees his own.

5. Do you respond to comments? Yep! It may take a while depending on spoons, but I almost always do. The only exceptions are for comments that make no sense to me or demand me to write more for a pairing.

6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending? There's a lot of contenders for this, but let's go with Like a Wave That Should Engulf the World (G, Faramir/Éowyn, ~700 words), in which Faramir foresees Éowyn's coming death.

7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending? For Charity (Boromir, Faramir, Éomer, Lothíriel, and Éowyn, 2k), for sure. Two thousand words of pure ridiculousness.

8. Do you get hate on fics? Not since ye olde days of posting on FFN.

9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind? Very rarely and very vanilla, with emotions and metaphor taking precedence over mechanics.

10. Do you write crossovers? Nope. Not much into reading or writing them.

11. Have you ever had a fic stolen? Hope not!

13. Have you ever co-written a fic before? Nope.

14. What’s your all-time favorite ship? *looks at header, url, and blog title* I don't think I even need to say.

For the sake of answering the question, my Glorfinwyn AU, but only because I'm not sure I have the skills to pull it off, and my perfectionism is a raging beast. But I do really want to finish it, even if it's three years from now because I'm the slowest writer I know.

16. What are your writing strengths? Characterization and description/scenery, although I've been struggling with the latter lately. Dialogue has finally been getting easier, though.

17. What are your writing weaknesses? Plot, body language, and describing emotions.

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic? I'll sprinkle in some individual words/pet names (all shamelessly ripped from RealElvish.net) here and there that should be guessable from context clues. I don't do full sentences very often both because I feel it isn't necessary most of the time (sorry JRRT), and because I know people don't enjoy having to scroll to the notes for translations. But I will admit to having a weakness for Elves lapsing into their native tongues during uh. heated moments with their partners.

19. First fandom you wrote for? LOTR, years ago. And here I am back again!

20. Favorite fic you’ve written? This is so hard, but Over Seas of Starlight (G, Frodo & Gandalf, 3.6k) is near and dear to my heart. Sailing West, my beloved.

Till Morning's Light

Okay, I know I should have kept this under wraps until I actually completed the fic it's supposed to accompany. But I couldn't help myself. I hope I am able to complete this story soon (it's been stalled for weeks now), since it's supposed to be just a long one-shot.

This fic is also competing with the other Eomer WIP I have ("Taken"), but I swear both of those are In Progress and are on the top of my priority list--you may thank Karl Urban for keeping his siren hold on me. <3

Story Premise: OFC Reader has fallen gravely ill to a winter illness spreading around Edoras. With disparate social classes dividing them, Eomer has taken her friendship for granted for years. As death looms close, he now faces losing her without getting a chance to admit that he has loved her all along.

I posted an excerpt HERE a while back. Sadly, not much more has been written since (Has it really been 2 months?? OMG what?! Where has my head been??), but I'm trying my best!

Instead of making progress in my current WIPs I have once more been possessed by love for Dol Amroth (shocking, I know). So here's a little from Finduilas' funeral.

Ivriniel did not realise that she was standing, completely still, until a hand brushed her arm. “My lady?” It took her a long moment to recognise the man who stood beside her. About a head taller than her, broad-built and grey-eyed, Îrdir of Lossarnach had the traditional Gondorian look, with olive skin and an aquiline profile. There was concern in his eyes now as he asked, “Are you well, my lady?” My sister is dead. How can I possibly be well? But she did not say that. Instead she smiled slightly. The movement made her stomach twist. “It has been a while, Îrdir,” she said pleasantly. It shocked her how easy it was to fake normalcy. Maybe the wine was finally working. “I hope you and your family are well.” “We are,” said Îrdir gently. “But it seems wrong for me to speak of that in current circumstances.” “Oh please,” said Ivriniel, wondering just how painfully obvious her desperation was, “I’m drowning in sympathy.”

6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending? The first chapter of The Weeping Willow. I was crying while writing it. it was meant as a standalone story but my amazing readers convinced me to write the second chapter to make the angst more bearable 😇

7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending? I think it's How to Kiss a Fairy, a fluffy and cute fic I wrote together with @avaria-revallier.

8. Do you get hate on fics? No, it has never happened so far. The closest to "hate" comments I got is reading loving messages like "how dare you treat these characters this way" (meant in a positive way) - I absolutely adore them!

9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind? Yes. Some tender vanilla, some is more kinky. I'm mostly into m/f and f/f.

10. Do you write crossovers? Rarely, mostly one-shots. My weirdest ones so far were The Hobbit crossovers with Three Musketeers, Snow White, and Star Wars.

11. Have you ever had a fic stolen? Not that I know.

12. Have you ever had a fic translated? Yes. It's The White Raven, not an easy thing to translate, I believe.

13. Have you ever co-written a fic before? Yes! It's so much fun! Here are two fics I can think of at the moment: How to Kiss a Fairy (see above) and Scattered Through Time co-written with @joyfullynervouscreator

14. What’s your all time favorite ship? Canon ship? Wait, only one? How am I supposed to choose? Let me give you three ships for the price of one: Eowyn x Faramir, Galadriel x Celeborn, Bofur x Bilbo.

15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will? Listen, I want to finish all 398274238765723866782354768 of my WIPs, okay? Just please don't ask me when...

16. What are your writing strengths? I have no idea, I'm constantly doubting myself. Maybe... Storyline planning and worldbuilding?

17. What are your writing weaknesses? Do you have an hour? No? I thought so. My biggest one is laziness. And I'm not too good with dialogues. And descriptions of clothing worn by the characters. And... finishings the fics I started.

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic? As English is not my native language, I'm doing it every day :D Writing dialogue in elvish or dwarven languages is a great tool for a writer! Among other things, adds specific flavour to stories and I really like reading it. From time to time, I add some of it to my stories too.

19. First fandom you wrote for? Star Wars.

20. Favorite fic you’ve written? Every single fic I wrote is my favourite - although each of them for different reasons. What are your favourites?
