The Gif Fiasco

First time getting in tumblr trouble I guess.

So, recently one of the main mfmm (miss fisher's murder mysteries) blogs mentioned me in a post accusing me of stealing their gifs. I don't know if I can mention them here as they have blocked and reported me. They also encouraged their followers to do the same.

I have been consistently posting mfmm gifsets as I have been watching the show and wanted to share my appreciation for it with the tumblr fandom. I found the gifs on google images and there was no watermark or anything else on them that would indicate that they belong to one specific person or blog. Also, I would like to add that this isn't even their original content as it is taken from the show in the first place.

Anyway, I can understand if the person was annoyed by this and recongised their gifs. I would rather they have messaged me and explained what was going on, than just make a post about it. I am still quite new to tumblr and do not really know how to make my own gifs. Nor do I think that only a few accounts for one show should be able to only post gifs.

In light of this I will I stop posting any new gifsets. I still plan on writing a short review when I have finished the show. Hope that this potentially clears up this somewhat strange situation.

I love the idea of teenage Malleus hating his new baby brother Silver but slowly falling for him

words cannot express how much I adore that Mal's reaction to seeing a human baby for the first time was "the fuck is this. why does it look like that. gross." (then he immediately got stuck on babysitting duty and the rest is history)

I am SUCH a sucker for that trope of "non-humans being fascinated by normal human behavior", so between that and all the delicious angst going on I was eating VERY well. >:) Malleus being so impressed that two-year-old Silver can walk, because it took him twenty years to stand on two legs! Lilia barging in on the Zigvolts at 2 AM being like "he won't stop crying what do I do"! Lilia trying to feed Silver rats and Malleus being like "...please just stick with what the books say to feed it"! it is all so. chef's kiss.

For one moment, Aziraphale let himself want Crowley

It's just an instant, not even half of a heartbeat, but he lets himself want all of it. Crowley. The kiss. An "us." He puts his hands on Crowley's back and feels him.

It's nothing like the grip Crowley has on his lapels. This is gentle, reverent. A caress. The way we would expect Aziraphale to hold Crowley.

The kiss is long, something like 10-12 seconds. It's sudden, intense. For most of it, Aziraphale's hands are held out in shock, in a stubborn refusal to admit what's happening and why and that he wants it too. Until, for one instant, he gives in.

And in almost the very same instant, he realizes what he's done and his hands spring away.

But in that one moment, he kisses back. And it's why Crowley holds on a little longer. You go too fast for me, Crowley. So he gives him a little more time.

And when Crowley does pull away, Aziraphale starts to say, "I can't."

The words are not even sound, just air. Maybe they even would've been better than his chosen alternative. "I can't" isn't "I don't want to." It isn't "You're wrong" or "We shouldn't" or "No."

But "I forgive you"? For Crowley, that cuts deeper and Aziraphale has to know it.

He has to reign himself in to say it and I think he regrets it immediately after. Because when Crowley leaves, Aziraphale's real feelings almost slip out.

He starts to say, "No."

No, don't leave. No, I've failed. No, this can't be it.

But, yet again, he stops himself. Takes all of that hurt and anguish and devastation and, yes, heartbreak (even if he did the breaking) and pushes it down. Puts on the angelic front just like he's done over and over for six thousand years.

We are an angel and a demon. We have nothing whatsoever in common. I don't even like you.

I know you probably get a flood of these questions weekly, but when can we expect a job opening announcement for future Lackadaisy animations?

I'm a bit reluctant to post openings for a couple of reasons. One is I'm trying to prioritize the people who already worked on the pilot. They put in the work to make the pilot possible, I want them to get a shot at the jobs.

The other reason is any time I open up publicly about jobs, I get flooded with emails. I get a lot of emails now even though I've posted nothing. Before the pilot released, every job opening received hundreds of submissions. And I WILL read and sort through every email that comes my way for a position (when we're looking), so when thousands come in (and it would be thousands as it would be so so much worse now) that would mean I'd have to spend weeks reading and sorting emails rather than helming production.

We do not have the budget to make that someone else's job. And I don't want to put it on my leads' shoulders either.

If/when we have future openings, I'll be letting my crew members know they can spread the word around. Then they'll be making postings in community spaces for people to respond to. That's what we did for the recent VA castings and it worked to reduce the number of responses to a more manageable number of folks who met the minimum requirements (good recording space and microphone). It still took three people sorting through a designated email for two weeks to sort everyone and make decisions.

So if you're interested in applying in the future, maintain your connections with other VAs/artists/musicians/etc and figure out where they're sharing job listings.

Does that mean there's zero chance of listings here or on other social media? No, but it can only happen if I know we have time to handle the flood.

I was wanting to try doing an art piece in the style of the signature spell poster art pieces you create. But I’m not really the best at coming up with a composition for such a thing.

Do you have a process for how you come up with the compositions for them?

oh, awesome! it is an INCREDIBLY enjoyable style to work in; I hope you have fun with it! :D

I'm not great at putting my thought/art process into words, so my apologies if this doesn't make a lot of sense, but I'll try! my first step is always to do a LOT of thumbnails to figure out both the idea and how I want to show it; not trying to do a real sketch or anything, just little doodles to figure out what exactly I'm trying to portray. (I also call these "garbage passes" because they're not meant to be any good, they're just there to throw things out. aha. ha. ...anyway.) I think it's important during that first stage to really focus on the idea and the layout and not to get too bogged down in the actual drawing yet!

I tend to save my final thumbnails, so I'll use 'em as examples (I posted the ones up through episode 5 here if you're interested!) (and, uhhh, spoilers through episode 5 also in this post, hopefully that won't be an issue!)

the main thing I try to think about in composition is balance -- not necessarily in terms of symmetry, but in where each element is placed and how much space it's taking up. remember, empty space is still space! it's also really important to think about the parts that don't have anything in them, as much as the parts that do!

personally, I like to divide things up roughly by both halves and by thirds -- there's a lot more in-depth info out there on why the "rule of thirds" in particular works well visually, but in short, our brains tend to focus on things that are placed closer to imaginary division lines, instead of in the exact center of an image. so even when I'm doing something that is very centered and symmetrical, I try to keep that in mind and generally aim around those for landmarks like faces/eyes (or...where they would be, anyway) and other focal points.

it's not a formula of "the character's face should be in this division of this grid" or anything, more like "our minds like to focus on these areas, let's think about how to use that", if that makes sense! and of course rules are made to be broken, art is lawless anarchy, and so on. but it can be a good starting place for deciding where you want to put things!

and against the finished versions, because they do usually end up changing a lot (including the empty space of the border):

other stuff I just try to keep in mind is that our eyes like following arcs and paths, which can be a good way to guide the eye:

honestly, composition is one of those things I feel like I struggle with a lot, so I'm not sure how much of this is helpful or actually makes sense outside of my head. but hopefully it helps a little! it's all just stuff to think about while drawing and not anything hard-and-fast, so don't, like, stress out about making sure things are lining up exactly on the thirds or anything. again, it's more "our brains think these are the dopest parts of the rectangle" than anything else! take advantage of the cool parts of the rectangle!

I absolutely love the idea of wingman Johnny.

Him wingmaning you? Yes. Him wingmaning Simon? Yes. Him wingmaning both of you? Yes!

This guy is the type to drop subtle hints and make slight jokes when talking about one of you to the other. Sure, maybe he does do it to tease the two of you, maybe it is a little entertaining, but that’s just one of his many ways of trying to get the two of you together.

Johnny’s the type of guy to follow Simon up to the rooftop of the bar for a cigarette and only then ask, “Any plans for tomorrow?” All the while subtly jerking his head to your direction, his eyes following suit. He may as well give a slight nudge to Simon’s arm in the process, paying no mind to the raised brow and fairly un-impressed look the blonde gives him. But he does in fact see it, he sees the way his eyes gaze intently at you as he watches you take another sip from your glass. And he’s only ever seen Simon give that type of look to none other than a nice, cold glass of whiskey and sniffer dogs. All but things the Lieutenant has always had a special spot for.

Johnny’s also the type of friend to, during the amidst of a relaxed game of poker on the balcony of your apartment, start asking you subtle questions that may as well apply to your relationship with Simon. “How long ya’ known him?” Soon to be followed up with side-tracked, quote on quote, question, “Blondes or brunettes? Ah’ heard blondes are guid in kip.” Now queue the snickering from Johnny. And you can only raise your brows with a, “Mactavish?” As a questioning smirk crosses your lips. “Good in bed, lass.” He reiterates himself, his snickering turning into belly laughter as you groan and roll yours eyes at him, waving a hand at his remark. Though his trained military eyes can clearly see you barring the same look in your owns eyes that you always tend to hold whenever you personally speak about Simon.

Regardless if the both of you have or haven’t caught on to his little tricks and subtle-not-so-subtle vouching for the two of you, he’s absolutely going to keep it up until he gets told by both of you to either knock it off or until he hears that you and Simon are official. And when he does, you may as well never hear the end of it from him. But deep down, he is so unbelievably happy for the two of you. The crinkles in his eyes and the smile that graces his lips the moment he sees two of some of dearest friends being open and intimate with each other, even if it’s as small as sitting alone and laughing together in the back of the bar, is one of the most genuine things anyone will ever see.

Oh, and on a side note, when you and Simon do in fact become official, he’s definitely claiming he earned his spot as best man at your guys’ wedding/eloping… Christ, don’t even get him started when the phrase ‘Uncle Johnny’ becomes a thing, even if it’s just for a puppy that one of you randomly brought home one day…
