When You Wake part 2
For Dannymay Day 4: Videotape.
.
“Alright,” said Tucker, jumping off the stepladder.  “One video camera installed and ready to catch your freaky sleep disappearing act.”
Danny sat on his bed, and rubbed the sole of his right foot.  “Do you really think it’ll work?  I mean, it’ll only show me getting up and leaving, not why or where I go or anything.”
Tucker shrugged.  “I don’t know, but if we can get you getting up on tape at least we can be sure you aren’t being kidnapped by ghosts.  I understand that’s a big concern.”
“Ugh,” said Danny, collapsing back onto his bed.  “Don’t talk about that as if it’s an actual possibility.  I get enough of it from my parents.”  It would be good to ‘rule it out,’ though.  Maybe then they’d be able to start looking for the real problem.
Tucker’s lips twisted.  “Yeah, haha.  Sorry.”  He sat down on the bed next to Danny, who promptly threw a pillow at him.  “Hey!  Show some respect, I’m helping you out here.”
“I knowwww,” said Danny, rolling onto his front.
Tucker patted him on the back.  “Man, you know what would be great?  If we could stick, like, a camera to you, too.”
“Don’t those exist?”
“Not that I can afford,” said Tucker.
“Mom and Dad paid for this camera.”
“Yeah, well, I have no idea what they think is reasonably priced.  But it’d be great to figure out your blackouts in general, not just the sleepwalking thing.”
“I wish.”
Tucker was quiet for a long moment.  Then he sighed with a note of… relief?
Danny looked up, but Tucker wasn’t doing anything odd, just looking at Danny’s ceiling with a slight frown on his face.  “Is your ceiling different, by the way?”
“Oh,” said Danny, brightening and sitting back up.  “Yeah.  I kind of revamped my constellations!  I wanted to make them more realistic, you know?”  He shrugged.  “It’s a work in progress.”  He was pretty proud of it, even if it wasn’t perfect.  It reflected the night sky much better like this.
“It looks pretty elaborate.  You’re not doing this instead of sleeping, are you?”
Danny winced.  “At first, I guess, but that didn’t help any, I’d still black out, so…”
Tucker put an arm around his shoulders and gave him a quick squeeze.  “You’ll get through this, man.”
“Thanks,” said Danny.  “And I can just pop the tape out?”
“Yeah.  Here, there’s a remote.  Just turn it on before you go to bed, okay?”
“Yeah.”
.
Danny stumbled back into his room and glared at the camera, its red recording light staring at him.
He limped over to his nightstand to dig the camera remote out of the avalanche of volunteer opportunity brochures and hit the button to pop out the tape, then realized that he didn’t have the stepladder, so he was too short to actually pull it out.  There was no way he was jumping for it tonight. Something had happened to his leg.  It felt bruised all up and down its length, as if a giant had grabbed and squeezed it.
Which was just great.  A mysterious injury was definitely a thing he needed on top of everything else.  Maybe it wasn’t the first mysterious injury, but it definitely hurt.  He hated this.  He hated this so much.
“Dad?” he called.  “Can you come get the tape?  I want to see what happened!”
It was like unleashing a stampede.  When Jack burst into the room, it evolved that he’d brought the entire TV and the VCR with him.
“Um,” said Danny, as Jack set the TV down in the center of the room with a clunk.
“So you don’t have to do the stairs, Danno!  We noticed you were having some trouble on the way up!”
“Oh, thanks,” said Danny.
Maddie followed while Jack was trying to plug the TV in, and sat down next to Danny on the bed.
“Can I see your leg?” she asked.
With a wince, Danny pulled the leg of his pajama pants up.  Maddie frowned, the expression pulling on lines that Danny could swear she hadn’t had earlier this year, before his accident.
“Those are some bruises,” said Maddie.  “But I think they are just bruises.  We have some cream.”  She held up a small tube.
“Store bought?”
“Yes, it came with the first-aid kit.”
“No added ectoplasm?”
“Not this tube,” said Maddie, with the grace to look embarrassed.
“Okay, then,” said Danny, reaching for it.  She didn’t give it to him, but unscrewed the cap herself and started applying it.  “Mom,” he said, not really complaining, but still.
“You aren’t hurt anywhere else, are you?”
“I don’t think so,” said Danny.  “I’m just tired.”
“Alright!” exclaimed Jack.  “Let’s find out what ghost keeps taking Danny.”
Danny rolled his eyes very deliberately.  “Come on, give me the VCR remote.  It’ll be hours before anything happens.  I turned it on at like, nine.”
“I can do it, I can do it!” said Jack, who did indeed fast forward… straight into the part where Danny was gone and his bed empty.
It took a bit of finingling to get it only a few minutes before Danny left.
He leaned forward.  Even if this was going to be an underwhelming example of him wandering around like a zombie until he made it out the door, it was still something.
Danny watched his image on the screen breathe in and out, smoothly, dead asleep, apparently unaware of anything about to happen.  But then he shuddered, a full-body tremor, and went completely still.
Then, slowly, he sat up, turned and…
“What,” Danny whispered, his hand creeping up to his eyes.  “What is that?”
“I knew it!” shouted Jack.  “You were overshadowed, Danny-boy!  This is great!  We can fix this!”
“What?  No, no, that has to be… It has to be a– a– I don’t know, a weird red eye effect.”
He knew it wasn’t.
“Danny,” said Maddie, gripping his shoulders.  “Calm down.  Breathe.”
“Those aren’t–”
The Danny on the screen vanished into thin air.
The next thing Danny knew, he was in the park and the sun was up.

Lair
“Well that explains why you’ve never been to your lair,” Ember said, smirking. “You didn’t even know it existed.”
Danny laughed before turning his attention back to the oddly familiar door in front of him. “Well I do spend most of my time in the human world. And I don’t even usually pay much attention to these doors. There are so many. How’d you find it?”
“Ectosignature, silly,” Ember said, rapping a knuckle on the wood. “Don’t you know anything about ghost culture?”
Danny looked away, rubbing his neck sheepishly.
“Er, sorry. I guess that was a dumb question,” Ember said. She gestured to the door. “Well here you go! There’s your lair. You can… ya know… explore it and stuff.”
Danny moved to open the door but let his hand hover over the knob, strangely apprehensive. “What was… what was inside?”
Ember’s eyebrows flew up. “You think I went inside?” She sounded dumbfounded. “Even if lair doors weren’t locked until the owner of the lair first opens them, Don’t you know how- I mean…” She corrected herself. “It is super rude to enter a ghost’s lair uninvited.”
Danny’s mouth formed a silent “O”, causing Ember to perform a facepalm. That did explain some of the encounters he’d had in the Ghost Zone.
“Well, uh…” Danny’s attention fell back to the door in front of him. “Do you at least have some idea of what I might find in here? I mean… what’s a lair usually like?”
“Eh, I don’t know exactly how it works,” Ember said, leaning back in the air thoughtfully. “I think sometimes they’re connected to your obsession. Sometimes they’re just like, where you’d be happiest or thrive the best.” She shrugged. “I dunno, I’m no scientist.”
Danny exhaled a puff of air. “Okay. That doesn’t sound so bad.” He placed his hand on the handle of the door. He hesitated. Why was he so nervous?
Vaguely ominous notes began strumming from behind him. Danny turned towards the girl behind him who was currently plucking out the foreboding background music on her guitar with a mischievous half-smile on her face.
“You know, you’re not helping,” Danny said in slight exasperation.
Ember stopped playing as she stifled a snicker. “All right, all right,” She said, feigning offense. “I’ll take my leave. Don’t die in there!” She said before speeding off into the foggy expanse of the Ghost Zone.
“Still not helping!” Danny called after her before turning back to the door.
Danny put his hand back on the handle. He hadn’t noticed taking it off. Perhaps because of curiosity, perhaps because of some unidentifiable anxiety, he paused before opening the door to examine its exterior. It looked familiar somehow, yet he couldn’t quite put his finger on where he’d seen it before. It was something he knew he should know, but the recollection of where the door was from escaped him.
He sighed. Come on. Just open the door. There’s nothing to be afraid of.
He opened the door.
And he suddenly remembered where he’d seen that door before.
Behind the door lay a perfect replica of his own bedroom. He looked around in puzzlement as he stepped inside and closed the door behind him. Every detail was the same, all his model spaceships exactly where they should be, the little glow-in-the-dark stars arranged on the ceiling as close to the night sky as he’d been able to get them, everything precisely where it should be all the way down to the math homework laid out on his desk which he’d only gotten that morning.
Danny looked behind himself at the door, an eyebrow raised questioningly. Had the door just taken him to his own bedroom? His own house? Was the ghost lair of a halfa just his own home?
He looked back at his room and let out a laugh, changing back to human form. He felt a little disappointed that his adventure had simply led him back to where he went every day, but mostly relieved. He’d been afraid he’d find… well, something… in his lair that he didn’t want to find. His lair simply being his own bedroom was a bit underwhelming, but far from the worst it could have been.
In fact, he thought as he looked back at the oh, so familiar door, it was a little convenient that he’d been dropped off straight at home. He’d had his little adventure, and now he could commence his evening again right off the bat.
As Danny opened the door, he was pleased to see that it opened to the hall of his house, not back into the Ghost Zone. Yep, he was back at home.
“Danny, come down for dinner!” his mother’s voice echoed up the stairwell.
“Coming!” Yep, very convenient that he’d been brought straight here. He didn’t want to make his parents suspicious by missing dinner again.
He reached the bottom of the stairs and was promptly greeted by his parents and sister, all sitting down at the dinner table.
“Hey,” Danny said as he sat down, looking around dubiously. “...Why are we all eating dinner together? What’s the occasion?”
“Nothing, Danno! Except that your mother and I thought it might be nice to have family dinners more often,” Dad explained.
“We know you’ve been having a bit of a rough time with school and, well, everything, and something’s obviously going on with you that you’re not telling us,” Mom began.
Anxiety spiked in Danny’s gut. Did they know? Were they going to figure it out? How did he mess up enough to tip them off to that fact? They couldn’t figure out his secret; they’d hate him if they knew that he was a-
“...But we just want you to know that we love you no matter what. And nothing could ever change that.”
“We wouldn’t even stop loving you if you became a ghost!” Dad bellowed jovially. Mom rolled her eyes at him but smiled at Danny in silent agreement to the statement.
Danny sat back, stunned. Did he hear that right?
Jazz looked as surprised as he was. “Did you just say you’d love him even if...?” Her question trailed off.
Mom cocked an eyebrow. “...He was a ghost? Of course. He’d still be our Danny.”
It was too good to be true. Danny still almost couldn’t believe what he’d heard. Tears pricked his eyes. “Thanks. That’s… good to hear.”
At the sight of the tears Mom wrapped an arm around Danny’s shoulders. “Oh, sweetie, was that what you’ve been worrying about? Why you always look so scared when we talk about ghost hunting?”
“It’s just that, the way you’ve been treating Phantom…”
“Oh, we actually just made a truce with him this morning.”
...Wait. What?
Danny glanced at Jazz in confusion. She was grinning at him, but stopped when she saw his confusion. What? She mouthed.
Danny’s eyes dropped to the table in puzzlement. Something was wrong here. That hadn’t happened. At least not to him. Was there a ghost impersonating him or something? He really needed to get Jazz alone to talk about it.
Just when he was about to speak, something beeped loudly down in the lab.
Mom and Dad’s eyes met. “Jack, did you forget to-” Mom started.
“Yes.”
At that, they both rushed down the stairs.
“...Perfect timing.” Danny muttered to himself. He looked at Jazz. “I didn’t make a truce with Mom and Dad this morning.”
Jazz frowned. “But you told me about it during lunch. It happened during first period, remember? You missed that chemistry test to go fight Skulker? And you told me about how you were worried that was going to make you fail chemistry but I told you your grades were great even if you couldn’t retake it?” Danny looked more confused by the second. “You don’t remember any of that?”
“Jazz, since when have my grades been great?”
Jazz raised an eyebrow, pulled out her phone, and showed him his grades on it. He stood up and walked around the table to get a better look. Straight A’s.
Danny stumbled back. That- he didn’t have straight A’s, what- something wasn’t right-
“Jazz, where are Sam and Tucker?” Danny asked hesitantly.
“I think they said they were going to be coming over any minute now.”
At that exact moment the door burst open. Sam and Tucker entered, looking too happy, too healthy, much too carefree. Oh no, not them too.
“Danny!” They called out, rushing to give him a hug. Danny returned their embrace stiffly.
“Hey guys. You look like you’re doing… really well.”
Sam snorted, pushing him away. “Well you sound weirdly disappointed about that. What, do you miss all the ghost fighting we used to do?”
“Used to do?”
Jazz looked down at Danny in concern. “Are you okay, Danny? Don’t you remember all the truces you made with the ghosts? You’ve hardly had to fight anyone for weeks.”
“...I…” Was he in some kind of alternate timeline? How did he get here?
He suddenly remembered something Ember had said about ghost lairs: “Sometimes they’re just like, where you’d be happiest or thrive the best.”
Of course.
“...This isn’t real…” Danny whispered.
“What?” Jazz asked.
“It’s not… you’re not real!” Danny stepped back and glared at the things that looked like his friends and sister.
“Dude, of course we’re real,” Tucker said, reaching out a hand in concern.
Danny slapped it away and stepped back again. “No, you’re all just figments of my imagination or something.” He stepped back again and found his back against the door. “This isn’t real. It’s all just… fake.” He wasn’t really talking to the people in front of him anymore. He slid down to the floor and buried his face in his hands. “Why would Mom and Dad actually make a truce with me? Or be willing to accept me? Of course it’s not real.”
A hand rested on his shoulder. “Danny-” Jazz began.
Danny flung her hand away and phased through the door behind him, ignoring the shouts of surprise from those in the room. He found himself back outside his lair, in the Ghost Zone. A glance over his shoulder revealed the door, which looked like his bedroom door again, still shut. No concerned voices leaked through. Nothing thrust the door open to search for him.
He stared at the door numbly. It had been nice while it lasted, to have a dinner with his family, to have his parents not plotting his murder for once, to see Sam and Tucker without injuries stemming from his folly. Even if it wasn’t real.
A wry chuckle escaped his lips at the same moment as tears began to well in his eyes.
Of course it couldn’t be real.

Unlikely Delights
Part Two
Summary: Reader tries to “run into” Dan again, will it work out?
Warning: establishing age!gap, Dan mid 30’s Reader 21, 22
Note: It’s about Novemberish...they met in September. Reader and Dan have been running into each other a handful of times.
It was bitter cold today. “Billy remind me again why we didn’t tie the tarps around the buildings last week when it was in the fifties?” Dan grumbled
“Because the weather was supposed to hold.”
“Right.” Dan shook his head and pulled down on the cord and fastened it down.
“At least its not snowing yet.” Billy peered around his side of the small pharmacy.
“True, oh Tammy we got this. It is too cold out here. We’ll clean and do the rest?”
Tammy, smiled tucking some blond hair behind her ear. “Are you sure Mr. Torrance, Mr. Freeman? I finished my homework.”
Dan nodded but raised an eyebrow. “Dan, please.” But he smiled. “Yes, sweetheart we got this. Gone and enjoy your free time.”
She shifted where she stood. Billy stood up and echoed Dan’s nod. “Yes, go on little lady we got this. And yeah, Billy please. I don’t want to feel older then I am.”
She smiled brightly. “Ok. Have a good one, Dan and Billy.” Tammy waved, grabbing her bike that leaned against one of the oaks hopped on and rode off.
“She’s such a good kid.”
Billy nodded. “Yeah. Good kid, good family.”
“Yeah.” Dan sighed as he eyed the rest of the layout, “The clock tower or the church next?”
“Let’s get the clock tower, its such a pain in the ass.” Billy complained.
“It certainly is that.” He paused. “Hey Billy wanna hit the diner for dinner tonight.”
“Sure.” Billy shrugged.
“I’m so glad I’m off from the hospice tonight and I am in no mood to cook.”
“I hear that.”
*****
You were eyeing your phone. Class was over five minutes ago. The professor was just droning on and on, all because of the three day weekend.
Finally! You excitedly thought, you practically rocketed out of your seat. You pulled on your coat, and almost strangled yourself with how fast you tied your scarf. You rolled your eyes at how silly you were but all you could think about was Dan.
You really hoped you could catch him at teeny town. Today was when they were closing it for the winter. After that, you didn’t know how you were exactly going to run into him. Maybe today you could suggest coffee or something.
“Y/N are you coming to the party tonight?”
“Oh, hey Jen I’m not sure. I’ll call you.”
You walked fast out of classroom then the building. The coldness of outside hit you hard and you shivered, but the thought of possibly catching Dan made butterflies appear in your tummy. It was three blocks to Teeny Town, you could make it.
*****
“Alright, let’s now get to the rest of it.” Dan rubbed his hands together.
Together they unraveled the drop cloth and then stretched it good and tight. As he did and pulled it down then he paused.
Warmth filled him as he felt you. You were close. You were such a breath of fresh air, you were like the sun. His heart had picked up knowing, he’d see you. These last two months of little chats and encounters had always left him wanting a little more. You never failed to make him smile.
“Dan, Dan did you tie it?”
“Oh.” Dan chuckled. “Sorry got distracted.”
Billy laughed. “It’s alright Danno. Pull and tie.”
He did and then fastened it down. Eyeing the knot he made, he cleared his mind and himself be surprised your arrival.
“Guess who?” Two very soft and dainty hands covered his eyes. He let out a loud gasp.
*****
You had made it, a smile spread wide across your face. You calmed your breathing. That would be a dead give away. You had to be cool.
You eyed his soft dark strands, the curve of his cheek, which had the shadow of growth. Clean shaven, goatee or full on beard it had all looked great on him.
Walking over on small steps, you crept up behind him. With your heart racing you put your hands over his eyes.
“Guess who?”
His warm, pleasantly rough yet smooth hands covered yours. “Who could it be? Oh I know Janice from the diner are you bringing me a piece of pie?”
“Nope.”
Billy popped his head up and smiled and shook his head.
“One more guess!” You said cheerfully.
“Oh! I know. Abra! Does my sister know you’re here?”
You giggled. “No! It’s me silly.” You stood back to give him room to stand up.
He stood up and dusted his knees off. “Oh, hi there Y/N, I could have sworn you were my niece.”
“Oh Dan!” You just smiled and rolled your eyes. Gently you pushed him. “I’m so sure!”
He reached out and grabbed the ends of your scarf, he gently tugged on it. “Remember when your hair was this colorful?”
“I do.” He didn’t immediately let go of your scarf. “Maybe I will do it again soon.
“Hi Y/N!” Billy came around and Dan let go of your scarf.
“Hi Billy.” You said sweetly.
You stuffed your hands into your pockets.
“You must be cold.” Dan looked around, and gave you a soft smile.
“I’m fine.” You fibbed but couldn’t hide the shiver.
He stepped closer and rubbed one of your arms. The butterflies in your stomach went into a frenzy.
“Billy and I are going to catch dinner tonight at the diner.” He pressed his lips together, running his fingers through his hair. “Why don’t you meet us there, get a table and warm up.”
“Yeah?”
He nodded and gave your arm a squeeze. “Unless you have to go to help at the boutique?”
You shook your head. “No! I have the entire three day weekend off!” You said happily.
He smiled and your heart squeezed, as the butterflies stopped and turned entire flock of birds flapping their wings inside of you. “Fantastic! I have tonight off too.”
“Great! Ok, I’ll go grab us all a table.”
*****
“Dan?”
“What?” Dan, had not been able to wipe the grin off his lips as they finished up.
“Umm, you were grumpy and cold, well now...” His voice trailed off.
Dan nudged his friend in the shoulder. “She’s cute.”
“She is, she twinkles when she looks at you.”
“Does she?” Dan stopped.
“Yeah buddy. But Dan, she’s young.”
Dan sighed. “She is but she’s not a kid. I don’t know. I..” Now it was time his voice trailed off.
“True. Just be careful.”
Dan rose eyebrow. “What do you mean?”
Billy shrugged. “You are a bit of heart breaker.”
“Two girlfriends and a few dates does not make me a heart breaker. And Janice is happily engaged now.”
“Yes, but still moony over you.”
Dan shook his head. “She is not.”
“She is too.” Billy stopped. “Alright just don’t let her be the reason why you get back on the bus.”
“Billy! Seriously?”
“I had to say it. She seems like the one that could really be something.”
“You think so.”
“Maybe.” He shrugged. “I worry about you.”
He nudged his friend again. “Billy, I’m not going anywhere. My family is here, Abra would probably kill me.” He chuckled. “And my best friend is too.” He eyed Billy.
“Oh, don’t be sentimental.” Billy replied dryly.
“Well, its true.”
“Thanks pal. Alright, as your best pal of course, I’m going to worry.”
“Thank you. But I think it will be ok. I have a good feeling.”
“Ok, good. You are happier since that first hug.”
“I am.” Dan chuckled and pushed open the door to the diner.”
*****
You glanced back as you walked away. You couldn’t help notice Dan was still smiling, that certainly brought a spring to your step.
Once in the diner, you began to warm. Dan had certainly been right about that. You shrugged out of your coat and scarf.
While you waited you had switched where you sat twice. You were so nervous. Then you tried sitting as differently as you could after finally settling on what side you sit on.
“Water, honey?” Asked the warm voice of the waitress.
“Yes, please. Three.”
“Three?”
“I have some friends joining me.”
“Oh ok! Great. I’ll bring those over.”
Hearing, the rich sound of Dan’s laughter made nervously open and close your hands under the table. You could do this and not be completely silly.
Turning, where you sat you smiled and waved. “I’m over here!” You called.

Ectober Day 1: Hunter I’m doin the calendar kindly shown to me, though I might check out the weekly one too! ok time for your regularly scheduled mess.
“So how’d it go Danno?”
“Uhh, okay I guess. Beam’s kinda narrow though.” The half ghost gave a shrug, reaching back and grabbing the ‘improved’ thermos off his back. “Might be easier to keep on me, but I keep thinking I’m gonna drop it or something.”
“Ah, you’re like your old man! The extra helft just feels right, doesn’t it son?” For a large man in a bright orange jumpsuit, Jack certainly nailed the general feeling of an excited puppy.
It still threw Danny a little, having his dad talk to him about ghost hunting. Or at least talk to him about hunting ghosts that weren’t him, anyway. “Maybe? I just have more practice with the old one.”
“Don’t worry, I’ll talk to your mom about the size! Can’t have our son hampered with shoddy equipment!” He took the smaller thermos, eying it for a moment before placing it on the table. “Any time to chat family business, kiddo?”
The teenager’s face twisted as he considered those words. Ghost hunting was a ‘family’ thing now. Oh no. He totally was turning into his dad. Wasn’t he meant to be in college before that happened? “I’ve still got work from Lancer…maybe later?” Later when he wasn’t internally shrieking at the horrors of being dad.
“Sure thing! Just call if you need any help kiddo.”
Amazing how much more time they had to help out with schoolwork when they weren’t obsessed with trying to rip him apart molecule by molecule. He should be happy about it, but it still made the back of his neck tingle with barely suppressed irritation. Was it really they had more time because they felt guilty and were more careful about the stuff they started building without a care in the world? Or was he worth paying attention to now that he hunted ghosts? That he was one, sometimes? He groaned, glaring at his desk and opened homework. Why Hamlet thought talking to a skull about pencil types wasn’t really grabbing his attention. But Mr. Lancer probably wouldn’t be thrilled if he tried submitting a paper on why Hamlet’s dad wasn’t a ghost, since he should just go avenge himself instead of shoving it on his kid.
Really, the best thing was being able to talk about ghost stuff and actually have them listen, instead of constantly hearing he was wrong for thinking he had feelings. Which was much more interesting than the lamest ghost to even ghost. At least the Box Ghost put in an effort.
Which is why he ended up back downstairs helping his parents try categorizing ghosts, since their previous assessment of ‘all are the same horrible mindless monsters’ was obviously false.
“Skulker’s weird. He’s actually really tiny, all that robot stuff he just added on.” He bit his lip, tapping at a photo of said ghost. “And he needs a hobby. One that isn’t trying to skin me!”
“A ghost that hunts other ghosts! I wonder if that’s more common than we think.” Maddie looked pensive, glancing between the boy and the photograph.
“Well Danny’s got ghost hunting in his blood! Doesn’t look anything like that ghost either.”
“I dunno. It isn’t like I actually go to the ghost zone very often.” Though being categorized as similar to Skulker certainly pinched a nerve.
“Maybe Jack, but I don’t think that’s quite right. Danny, you’ve had your ghost sense as long as you’ve been a half ghost, right?”
“Yeeeeah? So?” He rubbed the back of his neck, trying to push away how weird and wrong it felt to be asked that.
“Well you never seemed very interested in ghosts until you got your powers, sweetie.”
“It wasn’t like there were any ghosts to be interested in before that.” He shot back, blinking a bit at his own prickliness at the observation. It wasn’t a big deal, why did he care? “Not any we’d seen anyway.”
“Oh, oh! How do you feel when it goes off kiddo?”
He leaned back a little at the question. “Cold? Annoyed? I don’t really think about it?”
“You just try and find somewhere to transform so you can go face whatever’s setting it off, right?” Her voice was warm, but the intensity in her eyes was making him feel even more on edge.
“I guess. Someone has to deal with it.”
“Hmmm. I wonder if it’s really your human half that prompts the ghost fighting, or if it’s something on your ghost side…”
“Hey mom? You’re doing the thing. That we talked about. With Jazz.” Danny clutched at his arm, wondering if it’d be more rude to just vanish and leave the conversation that way. Yet Jazz insisted he should speak up instead.
“Oh wow Maddie, you’re a genius! Why would a newly formed ghost waste energy having a way to track other ghosts if they didn’t intend to hunt?” Jack’s excited chattering was probably loud enough to make Danny’s muttering inaudible.
“So that’d be an aggressive, territorial type of ghost.”
“Mom.”
“They might gain strength by defeating others and stealing their energy, or simply be powerful enough that scaring some humans isn’t nearly enough-”
“Can you stop talking about me like I’m a test subject? Please?” He cut in, trying to focus more on the pressure he was putting on his  arm rather than his words.
“Oh! I’m sorry sweetie. I really didn’t mean just you, just in general. It’s a fascinating subject.”
Yup. That was him. A fascinating subject. It made his stomach churn, but he fought the feeling off. They didn’t mean anything by it. He was just being silly. He wasn’t really worried that the thing his parents were most proud of in him would end up being some weird, creepy ghost instinct he got when he fried himself. Of course not. That’d be silly.
The Fentons were ghost hunters. It was just a coincidence. His ghost half had nothing to do with the guilt that made him feel like he had to protect the town.
He took back the worry about turning into his dad. He’d prefer that feeling right now, honestly.

Love Is The Seventh Wave
McDanno, A03, 2400 words
Written for the H50 Writers Club Discord “Danny Deserves Better” challenge
“Are you serious?”  she says, and all eyes in the writer’s room turn towards her. “That’s just cruel.  And it makes no sense.”
 “It’s dramatic, Lola.”
 “Lilla,” she corrects, surprised that the douchebag even came close, given that he hasn’t spoken more than those three words to her since she started working for him a month ago. “Just hear me out.  What if instead of having totally out of character bathroom sex with Joanna....”
 *****
 Danny’s sipping idly at his drink when he notices the woman sitting nearby.  She’s pretty, her dark hair a contrast to her light silky blouse, and she’s about as out of place at this bar at ten o’clock in the morning as Danny is.
 She looks up at him, and Danny cracks a smile.  “You looking at me?”
 The woman shakes her head.  “The television’s behind you.  And I desperately need a distraction.”
 Same here, Danny thinks.  “Well, if you’d rather have a live distraction than whatever’s on the news, I’m happy to oblige.”
 The woman smiles and moves over to the seat next to him, bringing her coffee with her.  “At this point I’m willing to try anything.”
 “Buy you a drink?  Wine, beer, scotch on the rocks?”
 “Nah, I’m good.  Not quite desperate enough to drink the hard stuff before noon.”  She glances at Danny’s glass.
 “Club soda,” he admits, and she grins.
 “We’re practically twins.”  She sticks out her hand.  “I’m Joanna.”
 “Danny.”  Her hand is soft, but her grip is firm and doesn’t linger.  “It’s nice to meet you.  So, what do you want to talk about?”
 “Oh, anything but my love life.”
 A laugh bursts out of Danny. “Get right to the point, do you?”
 “No sense wasting time.  For all I know, you’re a reporter doing a story on bars that open before noon and you’ll have to dash off to the next one any minute now.”
 “No chance.  I’m a detective, actually.  But I’m taking a personal day.”
 She gives him an appraising look. “A cop?  But you seem so nice.”
 “Ha, ha, ha.  Very funny.”
 “So,” Joanna says, “why a personal day?”
 Danny takes a moment wondering how to answer this – he’s not really sure himself – when his phone rings. It’s Steve, of course, and the fact that hearing his voice makes his whole body light up just adds fuel to the giant dumpster fire that is his life.  He hangs up after a few minutes and turns back to Joanna.
 “Who was that?”
 “My partner.”
 Joanna looks at him appraisingly, and then nods.  “Yeah, I’ve got one of those.”
 “You’re a cop too?”
 She snorts.  “Um, no, that’s not what I meant.  I’m a lawyer, actually.”
 Danny’s confused.  “So you have, what, law partners?”
 Joanna takes a packet of sugar and adds it to the fresh coffee the bartender has set down in front of her. “You’re a little oblivious, aren’t you?”
 It’s said with such amusement that Danny isn’t mad, and he’s happy to play along.  “Oblivious about what?”
 Joanna sighs and takes a careful sip of her drink, then stirs it some more.  “You’re telling me that guy you just spoke to is your work partner?”
 “Yes, who else would he be?” Danny has his own answer for this, but it’s a fantasy he hasn’t entertained in, oh, at least an hour or so.
 Joanna shrugs noncommittally.
 They slip into a more or less comfortable silence, and Danny contemplates his club soda.  It’s just as boring as it was when he started it. He’s not even sure why he’s here, at a random bar on the north shore.  When he woke up this morning, knowing he had a day free to do anything he wanted, a day off from work and all of its headaches, the first thing he thought of was checking the weather report to see what the waves would be like – because surfing with Steve is one of his favorite things to do to de-stress.  But then he realized that Steve didn’t have the day off too, and it all seemed pointless.
 A day without obligations is hard to come by for a single working dad, and Danny knows in theory he should be enjoying it.  But he’s not.
 “I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to push.”
 Danny is drawn out of his thoughts by Joanna’s comment.  “No, you’re fine, it’s not you.”
 Joanna leans back a little and runs a hand through her hair.  “Want to know what I’m doing here?”
 Danny takes in her flattering outfit, her carefully done make-up.  “Waiting for a client meeting?”
 She laughs.  “Nope.  One with my partner.”
 “Your law partner,” Danny clarifies.
 Joanna laughs again.  “Yes.  Except that’s the problem.”
 “What’s the problem?”
 Joanna takes a deep breath.  “The truth is, I’d like it if my law partner were a little more than that.”
 Danny feels a rush of shame, and looks quickly around the bar – still empty, except for the bartender.  “Is this some kind of joke?”
 She reaches out and puts a hand on his arm.  “Relax. I’m really not pulling your chain. I’m telling the god’s honest truth.” She takes her hand back and swipes at her phone.  “Here, see? We go out for drinks every Thursday night, everyone in the office.  Thirsty Thursday kind of thing.  Last night went on a little longer than usual, since we just got some really good news on a case.”
 Joanna shows him a photograph of a tall, blond woman with her arm around Joanna, both of them in business suits and holding glasses of champagne.  Several other people are crowded around them.  All of them are making happy faces at the camera, except for Joanna, who has eyes only for the woman at her side.
 “Oh,” says Danny.
 “Yeah,” says Joanna.  “And I’m pretty sure Jasper – he took the picture – sent it and about twenty other equally embarrassing ones to everyone who was there, including my partner.”
 “Is that good or bad?”  Danny asks.
 “I’m not sure.  But I’m going to find out.”
 “What do you mean?”
 Joanna taps her fingers on the bar, clearly a little nervous.  “Okay, you’re probably going to thing I’m nuts.  I went for my usual run this morning, through my neighborhood and down to the beach.  It’s the same route I’ve run hundreds of times, and there isn’t much beach there, just some scrubby trees by the water’s edge, but you know any bit of beach is beautiful here, so it’s all good.  And this morning, for the first time ever, I saw a honu on that little beach.
 “A turtle?”
 “Yeah.  I’ve never seen one there before, but today there was a honu right there, a really big one.”
 “Okay…”
 “Honu are a symbol of good luck, right? I’ve realized that if I don’t say something to my partner soon, I’m going to lose my mind, or have to quit my job, or both – and once I saw that honu, I knew I could tell her how I feel. I’m going to do it today.”
 “Wow,” Danny said, feeling buoyed by Joanna’s excitement.  “You really are?”
 “I really am.”  Joanna stands up from her chair and straightens her skirt. “I finally realized it’s too important to keep hiding from.  The way I feel about her… I think I love her, you know?  And I can’t believe I’m telling you all this, maybe it’s easier because I don’t know you…”
 “No, I get it,” Danny says, and he does.  Sitting in this random, sunny bar, with a woman he’s never met before, with no preconceived assumptions, no rules or requirements, Danny suddenly feels like he’s opening up, too.
 “I just don’t want to let a chance for love pass me by, not any more,” Joanna continues.  “Not if we could really be something, and I think maybe we can. So I asked her to meet me at one of our favorite restaurants for lunch, in Haleiwa.  Away from the office, somewhere private… and I better go, I don’t want to be late.”
 “Of course not,” Danny says, standing too.
 Joanna regards him for a long moment, and Danny squirms a little.  “I think today is your lucky day, too,” Joanna says.
 “Why’s that?”
 “Because you met me,” Joanna says, grinning as she leaves.  Danny thinks she’s right.
 ****
Joanna’s excitement is infectious, and Danny feels himself standing a little straighter as he leaves the bar. Maybe her plan would work for him, too. He hasn’t wanted to say anything to Steve for all the obvious reasons – he doesn’t know if Steve feels the same way despite how close they are, he’s never heard Steve express any interest in men at all, and he doesn’t want to ruin their friendship.  But this constant pining is wearing away at him, and he isn’t getting any younger.  What if he waits another ten years and then it turns out Steve was up for something more after all – what a waste that would be.  Or what if he doesn’t have ten years to make up his mind – what if Steve’s conversation with Eddie’s veterinarian this morning turns into asking her out for a date, and they hit it off and live happily ever after?
 There are millions of ways that Danny can miss his chance with Steve, and only one way to find out if he’s still got one.
 Danny makes a few stops on his way back to Steve’s place.  He texts Tani a few times to keep tabs on the team and make sure he knows when Steve’s heading home.  He’s got a caprese salad drizzled with balsamic vinegar on the table and wine opened and breathing on the counter when he hears the front door open.
 Steve appears in the doorway to the kitchen, and Danny’s jaw falls open.  Steve’s wearing a dark gray button-up shirt, collar open at the neck, and black slacks that hug his ass like his cargoes never quite manage.  He even looks freshly shaved.
 “Hey, Danno,” Steve says, voice low, and Danny shivers.  He takes a step towards Steve but somehow trips over his own feet and the carving knife in his hand goes flying to the ground.
 Steve sucks in a breath, and they both stare at the knife, stuck in the floorboards about an inch away from Danny’s bare right toe.  “Huh,” says Steve.  “Lucky.”
 Danny sucks in a breath and shakes his head, trying to grab on to anything at all that makes sense. “Why’re you dressed up?”  he finally comes up with, which isn’t particularly witty but is somewhat better than oh my fucking god what is going on here, which is a close second.
 Steve smirks.  “I’ve got a date.”
 Danny’s heart sinks.  He’s too late, he’s just one goddamn day too late, this is his life every single time.  He was a fool for thinking otherwise.
 “With that vet?”
 Steve looks determined.  “No, not with the vet.”  Steve crouches down at his feet and retrieves the knife, then places it in the sink.  He’s right up in Danny’s space.  “You look nice too,” Steve says, and at first Danny think’s it’s a non sequitur, but then he takes in Steve’s expression, that cocky confidence with an undercurrent of uncertainty, and the way Steve is lining up his own very nicely clad shoulder with Danny’s, and suddenly the clouds part and all is clear.
 “Wait,” Danny says.  “What do you think… How did you…?”
 Steve’s face does something that seems to be a cross between a smirk and a hopeful grin.  “Tani said you texted her a few times today.”
 “So?”
 “She said you were buying wine.”
 Danny bites his lip.  “Again, so?”
 “You never buy wine, unless you’re cooking a fancy meal.”
 “I buy wine all the time.”
 “When was the last time?”
 Danny has to think pretty hard about it, and that’s when he knows he’s losing this particular argument.  He still has hope for winning the war, however, so he stops talking about wine.
 “Can we go back to the part where you said you had a date?  Because you’re not acting like you have a date.”
 “No?”  Steve asks.  “How should I be acting?”  Steve somehow moves even closer to Danny, tilting his head, waiting for Danny’s answer.
 Danny can feel his heart pounding in his chest, and he thinks he might be getting light headed.
 “Come on, Danny,” Steve says, his breath puffing against Danny’s skin.  “How should I be acting?”
 Danny just blinks up at him, and then he’s saved from having to come up with an answer by Steve’s lips pressing against his own.  Danny thinks he lets out something like a moan as his mouth opens under Steve’s, and he slides his hands up Steve’s back under his ridiculous shirt and pulls him close.
 ****
 “You can’t possibly have known what I was going to do just from Tani telling you I was buying wine.”
 Steve flops over onto his back. The sheet is pulled up just over his stupidly attractive hip bones, and Danny sneakily reaches out a finger to slide it back down again.
 “Honestly, all I knew was that it seemed like you were getting ready for a date,” Steve says.  “And it made me realize that I could lose my chance with you, anytime.  You could meet someone, maybe even that woman you were talking to at the bar this morning, and it would be too late for us.  So I changed into the spare clothes I keep at the office, and figured I’d give it my best shot.”
 Danny pushes up on an elbow. “Have you eaten a radioactive spider lately?  Drank some kind of serum?”
 “No…”
 “Because the mindreading shit is frankly disturbing…  I literally – and I mean the actual meaning of literally, not the one the kids are using these days – I literally had that same thought today.  That you’d finally get up the nerve to ask out that vet again, or fall in love while buying ammunition, or save some gorgeous lady’s pet parakeet from terrorists, and I’d lose my chance with you.”
 Steve turns towards Danny, his face brimming with affection.  “I guess today really was our lucky day, then.”
 Danny grins into Steve’s kiss. He’s gonna send Joanna a fruit basket. And maybe give a great big donation to whatever organization looks out for the honu, because he owes them, too.

Ohana- A Hawaii Five-0 Fanfic  Chapter Two
Enjoy! Please let me know what you guys think!
I am switching up the POV in this chapter and will probably continue like this. If you have a specific POV you'd like to hear from the characters, let me know.
~~~~~~~~~~~
At the Palace-
"You what!" Danny screeched as they exited the elevator. After they figured out that their "suspect" was going to be no help, they headed back to the office. Thank God everyone else was out of the office at the moment. The last thing Steve wanted to deal with is everyone else finding out about this before he had a chance to process it himself. He had spit it out to Danny on their elevator ride up to the office.
A baby. Steve was gonna have a baby. Well, Thea was going to have a baby. Steve's baby. He sighed and walked straight into his office, ignoring Danny as he continued to ask him to repeat what he just said.
"I'm sorry, you got who, what? You got a girl pregnant?" Danny followed him into the office quickly. Steve sighed again and sank down into his chair, head in my hands.
"What am I gonna do, Danny? I barely know this girl. We hooked up once when we met at the bar at Side Streets! Hell, I never even told her my name! She called me out of the blue yesterday and told me she had to see me in person. That it was urgent. It took me a minute to even realize who she was." He ranted, leaning back into the chair and stared up at the ceiling. Danny, for once, was silent. He looked like he was thinking which was never a good thing. After a moment he finally spoke up.
"What's her name?"
"Thea Kenwood. Why?" Steve asked. Without saying a word, he got up and left Steve sitting in the office alone. "Where are you going?" He called after him. Not a minute later he was back and tossed a file down on the desk. "What is this?"
He sat down in the chair in front of the desk again. "Theodora, also known as Thea, Kenwood. I knew she looked familiar when I saw her at Kamekona's. Grace is best friends with her sister, Nora. She's going to a sleepover there this weekend so I thought I'd look into who was going to have my kid overnight." He said, leaning back in his chair. He pointed to the file on the desk. "That, is a complete background check on the woman you've impregnated."
Steve stared at the file. Everything he wanted to suddenly know about this women was sitting right on his desk. He would know just about her entire life if he looked into it. Normally, Steve would have immediately done his own research about this woman. But something told him he shouldn't do it. He needed to respect her privacy more than that.
Ignoring his own thoughts, Steve looked up at Danny. "Did you read it?"
Danny nodded. "Yeah. Are you?"
Steve pulled the file over to him, staring at it for a moment. He looked up at Danny and shook his head. "Anything important I need to know?"
Danny leaned back and shrugged. "28. A counselor and board member down at the Hawaiian Youth Center. She has custody of her little sister Nora, the one that's best friends with Grace. Nothing really stands out. Just a hard working girl trying to raise a 7 year old. "
Steve nodded, rubbing his hand over his face while he swiveled slightly in his car. Steve spoke softly. "I'm gonna be a dad." He looked at Danny with glossy eyes. His eyes widened then snapped shut. "Oh god, I'm gonna be a dad!" Steve dropped his head onto his desk. Danny laughed and threw his head back.
"Oh boy, Super Seal having his first freak out. I love it." Danny chuckled, throwing his hands up.
Steve rolled his eyes. "Shut up."
After Danny's laughter dies down, they sit in silence for several minutes.
"She gave me an out." Steve said softly. Danny's head shot up.
"You didn't take it did you?"
Steve shook his head. "No! No, I... He pulled the ultrasound out of his pocket and looked at it for a moment before handing it to Danny. "A small part of me wanted to, but she gave that to me. How can I not be a part of my own child's life? I can't just go on with my life everyday knowing that my kids out there and I wasn't a part of their life!" Steve ranted, talking with his hands like his partner does.
Danny looked up from the ultrasound. He was remembering how he felt seeing Grace for the first time on the monitor that day in the doctors office. "Wait, are you mad she gave you an out?"
Steve sighed as he leaned back and rubbed his eyes. "No. I mean, I don't know. How could she possibly think that I wouldn't be there? That's my child too."
Danny shook his head. "No, Steve. I'm sure she didn't mean it like that. I mean you said so yourself. You barely know the girl. That means she barely knows you too. How the hell was she supposed to know you wouldn't just say, 'Oh that really sucks for you but I don't want anything to do with you or the baby.'" He put the ultrasound back on the desk. "That freak out you just had a moment ago, I'm sure she's been having a similar one. She had nothing to tell her that you wouldn't just leave her and that kid out to dry." Danny sighed, leaning back to cross his legs. "Look, I know finding out you're gonna be a father is scary. I was terrified when Rachel and I found out we were gonna have Grace. Hell, she's seven years old and I'm still scared every day. But hey," Danny stood and reached across the desk to pull Steve to his feet and into a bro-hug. "You're not gonna be alone. You know we got your back no matter what."
Steve smiled and returned Danny's hug. "Thanks Danno."
Danny pulled away in time for Steve to see the eye roll at the nickname. "And whether she knows it or not, we've got Theas back. So anything you guys need, just let us know. Speaking of, are you gonna tell the cousins today or wait a bit?"
"I think I'm going to wait a bit. I at least want to have another chat with Thea and let this all sink in some more." Steve said. He pulled out the other piece of paper that Thea gave him with the ultrasound. "She has an appointment today that she invited me to. She said if I couldn't make it it wasn't a big deal. Id like to try and make it, but by the looks of this case I wont be able to." He sighed. He really wanted to be able to be there. He just hoped that Thea wouldn't like his not being there as a sign that he didn't want to be involved. That was a conversation that he was going to have to have with her. His job was dangerous and demanding.
"What time is the appointment? They usually aren't that long so I don't see why you couldn't go." Danny asked him.
Steve glanced at the slip of paper. "11. Its just 9:30. I don't know if Ill be able to make it. But I told her I would call her later even if I wasn't able to show up."
Danny shook his head, following Steve towards the office door after they saw Chin and Kono walk into the offices. "I swear, I'm going to get you to that appointment. Trust me, they're more important than you think."
"Hey boss, we think we have a new lead on our suspect." Chin said, going to work on the tech table to pull up some surveillance footage.
"Alright, what do we have?"
The doctors office-
Thea sighed, plopping the magazine down on the table in front of her chair in the waiting room. The wait was going on 30 minutes and the seated were extremely uncomfortable, even for non-pregnant women, Thea imagined. Finding a better doctors office was on her list of things to do today before she had to pick Nora up from school. Mindy was supposed to meet her after this for lunch so she could get her recommendations, but also so she could finally tell her who the father was. This was a conversation Thea was dying to have with her best friend.
She was also going to have to have a conversation with Rachel. Through the girls, the women have gotten pretty close. Rachel offered to help out with Nora whenever Thea needed help. Rachel told her that she remembered how exhausting it was to still work while pregnant and she couldn't imagine having to go through this alone, regardless of the father's help with the baby or not. She told Thea that everyone needs a support system and to not hesitate to call if she needed anything or just wanted to talk to someone who has been there.
Thea was thankful to have a wonderful support group. Between Mindy, Rachel, all her friends at work, and now from the sounds of it, Steve. She was finally starting to feel better about this pregnancy.
Thea smiled to herself and leaned back in the waiting room chair. Right as she was starting to get comfortable, her name was called. She made small talk with the nurse as they walked back to the exam room.
"So I hear were at 12 weeks already!" The nurse said excitingly. "Will the father be joining us today?" It was a routine question, her nurse last week had asked her the same thing.
"No, he's stuck at work. Its just me today." Thea said, smiling friendly at the nurse. It felt nice to be able to say that and actually mean it this time. She had used the same excuse on her visit a few weeks ago. She really hadn't expected Steve to come today but felt like she owed it to him to have the option.
"Aw, okay. Well, well make sure we get some good pictures of the little one for him to see." The nurse smiled and let Thea into the exam room. "Okay, if you'll just change into the top laid out on the table, then lay down, I will be right back to get started."
Thea nodded and waited for the nurse to leave before quickly changing into the paper like shirt. She groaned at how sensitive her boobs were rubbing against the thin fabric. She had already turned to wearing sports bras on most days since regular wired bras just weren't comfortable anymore. And she didn't see it getting any better for the rest of her pregnancy.
She hopped up on the table, trying her best not to mess up the paper that was laid across it. She leaned back and closed her eyes so she could try and get comfortable.
'Goddamn, the chairs and tables are made of bricks.' She thought to herself.
There was a knock on the door that startled her a little. "Uh, come in." Her eyes widened slightly when she saw Steve poke his head in the door.
"Is it okay that I come in?" He asked, opening the door up a little more to walk in.
Thea smiled softly at him. She hadn't expected him to show up today. "Yeah of course. I just didn't think you were going to be able to make it." She watched him walk in and close the door behind him. He walked over to the exam table and glanced down at her small bump that was much better to see in the top she was wearing now than the one she had on this morning.
"Yeah, I didn't think I was going to either. I have to get back to work after this, but I really wanted to be here so Danny and I made a pit stop." He said.
Before Thea could respond to him, there was another knock at the door and the nurse came into the room.
"Alrighty lets- Oh! Hello! You must be the father?" She smiled at Steve, a bit flirtier than Thea liked. She had no claim to Steve, so she didn't know why the nurse grinning at Steve like that irked her so much. They were going to be co-parents, that's it.
Steve politely smiled at the woman. "Uhm, yeah. Yeah I'm the father." He said, looking down at Thea, who was still looking at the nurse with a slight indifference. As a cop and SEAL, Steve picked up on it quickly, but Nurse Amanda, as the woman just introduced herself, didn't seem to notice the sudden change.
"Alrighty then, well, lets get started and see how your little one is doing." She pulled the monitor over to her. "Lift your shirt up to your chest," She motioned to Thea. "And I'm going to put some gel on. Fair warning its a little cold.
Thea pulled her shirt up to right under her boobs. She glanced up at Steve who was looking like a nervous wreck. Thea couldn't help but laugh a little bit.
"What?" Steve asked, his eyes meeting hers for the first time since he walked into the exam room. His green eyes met her amused ones.
"A Navy SEAL and a cop, and you look like you're about to faint." She giggled.
"I prefer the term, pass out, and no I'm not. I'm fine. Its just.." He trailed off, looking at the wand Nurse Amanda had in her hand. She pressed it to Theas abdomen gently and spread the blue gel around.
Thea took Steve's hand and squeezed it gently. This was her second ultrasound but she remembered how scared and nervous she was. "I know." She smiled softly. They both looked over at the nurse to see her turning the monitor around for them to see.
"Looks like the babies are doing great!" She exclaimed.
Theas head snapped away from the monitor and to the nurse. "The what?" Her eyes were wide. She was having one baby, not two.
"The babies. You're having twins!" She looked at the shocked faces of Steve and Thea. "Did you not know?"
"Does this look like the face of someone who knows she's having twins?!" Thea said loudly, causing Steve to snap out of the shock he was in. This morning he found out that he was about to be a father of a child. And now two. Theas hand was still in his, squeezing harder and harder.
"I'm not having twins. My last ultrasound showed ONE baby. ONE." She said.
The nurse moved the monitor over more so they could see. "One baby was probably well hidden behind the other, or was just not able to be seen on the screen. Lets see," She hit a few buttons on the screen then the sound of two rapid heartbeats came through the speakers. "There. There's the heart beats."
Thea opened her mouth to say something but nothing came out. Her eyes began to water up. Steve pulled one of the chairs over to sit next to her. His eyes never left the screen where he saw the two babies that Amanda had pointed out. He wrapped his other hand around his and Theas joined hands and lifted it to his lips, squeezing them gently. Thea squeezed back, looking over at him. She tried to hide the smile she had on her face but she couldn't.
"Twins would explain the all day morning sickness and the fainting spell you said you had earlier in your pregnancy. I'll take a couple pictures for you, then the doctor will be in."
Steve pulled their hands away. "Fainting spell?" He questioned Thea.
Thea used her other hand to wipe the few tears she had. "Uh, yeah. I was on my way up to my apartment one day with Mindy and I fainted outside my door. I thought it was just the heat and the long sleeved shirt I was wearing plus with how sick I had been feeling. After that Mindy kept asking if I was pregnant. A few days later I took a few tests. She looked at Steve. He had a look on his face, a worried look. It was only one time, I'm on my vitamins now and I'm careful about the heat." She gave his hand another squeeze.
Amanda said they would have the pictures for them at sign out and excused herself from the room.
Steve and Thea sat in silence, both thinking about what just happened.
Steve wrapped his arms tighter around you, bringing you closer to his chest. He had heard a strange noise coming from downstairs. Surely it was just his mind playing tricks on him. After all, it was… he slightly turned his head to look at the clock in the nightstand, 6:15 AM? He shook off the silly thoughts and laid his head back down on the pillow, thinking Eddie might have dropped something, snuggling closer to you. When he got comfortable enough, he heard the noise again, almost jumping out of bed but already having an idea of what might have caused the noise.
“Stevie?” you mumbled stirring slightly “Was that you?”
“No, I’m right here babe” Steve sat up leaning his weight on one elbow to kiss your cheek “Go back to sleep” you hummed in acknowledgment.
Steve held his breath to concentrate and listen to any noise, closing his eyes and pursing his lips for a second. That’s when he heard it, a faint curse, that would have missed if he wasn’t focusing that intently. With an angry huff, he shot out of bed, not bothering to put on a shirt, and taking a broom from the corridor’s cabinet.
Once he reached the stairs, he descended them carefully, yet quickly, avoiding the parts that creaked. While Steve neared the kitchen, where he was sure the noise came from, he wondered why Eddie didn’t bark if it was a stranger who broke in. His frown deepened when he heard happy hums coming from the room. Now that is weird. Rising the broom higher and adjusting his grip, he stepped into the kitchen.
“Danny?” Steve’s brow deepened, once he saw his partner standing in his kitchen wearing his apron “What are you doing here at this unholy hour?!”
“Good morning, brother in law! Nice to see you too” Danny Williams cheered once he turned around to place a plate of pancakes in the table and saw him standing there “You neanderthal animal, do a favor to the humanity and put on a tank top at least. What are you doing with a broom, by the way?” he frowned he noticed the object in his hands
“I’m the Neanderthal?!” Steve shouted flipping out and then remembering that you were sleeping upstairs and lowered his voice to a whisper “I thought someone broke in!” He whisper-shouted smacking his brother in law in the head with the broom repeatedly “It’s my day off and it’s too early to put up with you, I thought I wouldn’t have to see your face today” Steve smacked him one more time before Danny grabbed it and started hitting him back with the broom.
“You could at least thank me” the short blonde man huffed smacking Steve in the face “I made you breakfast” Steve let out an angry groan before retrieving the broom but he wasn’t fast enough and Danny rounded the table bumping into a chair in the process.
“Hey, hey!” you stepped into the kitchen rubbing the sleep out of your eyes, messy hair and wearing one of your husband’s t-shirts. Steve smiled at the sight of you, thinking you looked adorable, even more so than usual, at this hour of the day “What is all this havoc about?”
“Tell your husband to show some gratitude when someone cooks breakfast for him” You instantly woke up at the sound of your brother’s voice. Apparently, you didn’t notice that he was here until he spoke, not expecting him today at all since it was his and Steve’s day off.
“Danno!” you squealed walking up to him to greet him with a tight hug and a kiss to his cheek “I didn’t expect you today, isn’t today your day off?”
“Hey! Do me a favor and don’t call me Danno, uhum? I thought it was forgotten. Well, at least my baby sister is happy to see me, so I’ll let that go” he returned the kiss and went to serve the pancakes “I felt lonely at home, the kids went on a school trip and I decided to visit my other two kids” the joke made Steve groan and roll his eyes while he moved to the fridge to take out the juice.
“I can’t have one day to myself and sleep in with my gorgeous wife next to me, without anyone bothering me?” Steve mumbled placing the bottle at the table and kissed your pouty lips when he walked past you on his way to the cabinet to pick three glasses.
“I heard that!” Danny pointed the spatula at him “No buttered pancakes for you”
You couldn’t help but let out a chuckle, shaking your head at their antics, which soon turned into a laugh when Steve mumbled something around the lines of being too soon to put up with your brother and that he didn’t want buttered pancakes anyway, while he took a seat next to you. Once he was settled and took a blueberry from the bowl in front of you, you placed your hand at the nape of his neck to bring him closer to you for a loving kiss, to kiss his deep frown away.
“Guys, come on! PDA!” Your brother groaned making Steve break the kiss in annoyance.
“My house, my kitchen, my wife, my rules” He replied kissing you again, deeply this time, making your brother roll his eyes in annoyance.
“Oh, come on! It's my sister, you SEAL. And there are kids around” your brother pointed to the kitchen door, and you both turned your heads to see Eddie happily wagging his tail and happily barked. Then he laid down and placed his paws in front of his eyes as if to hide from you two kissing. “Good boy!” Danny chuckled throwing a berry at Eddie who cached it in the air and trotted away.
“Are you turning my dog against me?” Steve squinted his eyes at your brother.
“I swear you behave like an old married couple” you mumbled letting out a full laugh and taking a bite of your pancakes before they cooled down. You moaned savoring the buttered goodie “Danno, you’re the best at making pancakes” your brother smirked at you and flipping the spatula in his hand with a victorious grin before he returned to the task of cooking. “Hey! Give them back!” you squealed when Steve stole your plate.
“Nope” Your husband denied turning away from you when you grabbed his arm too pull him towards you, and stuffed his face with an excessive amount of your pancakes. He said something but you couldn’t understand him.
“Swallow first, then talk” you softly slapped his cheek and tried to take his pancakes instead, but he grabbed them away from you too. “Steve!” you whined crossing your arms over your chest.
“You’re not having pancakes until you admit I’m the best,” he said after swallowing the bite and having some juice.
“Don’t worry, sweetheart,” Danny said placing another plate of the buttered goodies in front of you “King of pancakes to the rescue” he joked kissing your head and taking a seat in front of you, after he finished serving the breakfast, and taking your previous plate of pancakes. He slapped Steve’s hand away with the spatula when he tried to reach back for it.
“Not fair” he mumbled into his coffee “he never butters my pancakes” you laughed at your pouty husband.
“Y/N/N, can you tell your husband to put on a shirt? He can cut the pancakes with his nipples” Danny groaned into his coffee.
“I could, but someone keeps stealing my clothes” Steve turned in his chair to glare at Eddie, who was sprawled on the floor and pointed a finger to him “Eddie stop stealing my clothes!” you laughed at his antics while your brother rolled his eyes.
“Seriously, make him put on a shirt or something”
“Wait” you rolled your eyes and stood up walking up to the fridge to retrieve some sticky notes from the block you kept there to write down reminders or shopping items or, in Steve’s case, just silly love notes and bad puns to make you smile. You took two of them, one green and the other orange, and walked back to your husband, who raised an eyebrow at you, to place them over his nipples with a pat on each one, making him chuckle and kissed his cheek before sitting back in your chair “There, PEGI 12” you all laughed and went back to your breakfast, the commander making sure the stickies stayed in place every each second.
The peace didn’t last long, though. Your phone started to ring, making you groan, since you were the one out of the three, who didn’t have a day off today, which means that you’ll have to go earlier than usual to the palace. You quickly apologized and stood from the table to retrieve your phone which was on your bag in the living room. “Williams-McGarrett” You answered once you noticed it was a call from Jerry.
Five-0 years ag-0…
“If you keep frowning, your face will get stuck like that” You cheered knocking on your brother’s, Danny Williams, office “How’s my favorite bro doing?” you smiled once he looked up from the papers he was looking at.
Since Grace and Charlie were at school and you haven’t yet visited your brother at work since you landed three days ago, and he probably was neglecting his diet, you decided to visit him and have lunch with him, even though he might be swamped with work.
“Y/N/N!” He cheered once he saw you standing there and stood up with a smile, engulfing you in a bear hug “What’s my favorite Williams doing here?”
“Taking care of my bro, of course. Since the kids are at school, I had nothing to do. And please,” you rolled your eyes breaking away from the hug and taking a seat at his desk before placing the take-away on it, careful not to dirt anything, while he closed the door after you to have more privacy “Everyone in Hawaii knows Grace and Charlie are your favorite Williams”
“Not true” He sat back and started opening the bags.
“Yes true,” Grabbing your bag which contained a taco bowl, you leaned into your seat. “How’s the case going?”
“Well,” he reclined in his chair, letting a long huff of breath widening his eyes and propping his feet on the table. “Not well, but we found a lead that hopefully will clarify things, we’ve gone from a dead-end to another” you nodded taking a bite from your food “By the way” you hummed in acknowledgment “Why can’t you eat tacos like normal people?” you squinted your eyes at him and threw a used napkin at him, making him protest.
While you ate, you and your brother made plans for the week suggesting activities that the kids might like, and once the trash was discarded and the desk was clean again, you both relaxed a bit while exchanging all the stories that happened these past months, trying to take his mind out of this stressful case. Even though they only have been six months to Danny they felt like six long centuries, he missed having his youngest sister, who he felt the closest to around. You were about to tell him another one of your college stories when someone knocked on the door.
“Oh, sorry I didn’t know you had company,” Kono said as she opened the door “Oh my god, Y/N? It’s been a long time!” she cheered when you turned around to face the familiar voice and stood up to hug her “How have you been?”
“Kono!” you gave her a tight hug “I’ve been good, but every day I felt homesick, how have you been?”
“I’ve been great thanks for asking, but did you miss your brother that much?” She joked making you chuckle and Danny roll his eyes to the back of his head.
“Nah, I just missed the Hawaiian nice weather” you joked back making your brother gasp while you two laughed. But you instantly pouted hugging him when he said he wouldn’t make any more buttered goodies for you.
“By the way Danny, that industrial ship was another dead end” the officer commented making your brother groan throwing himself to his chair facepalming. “McGarrett went to talk to Chin to see if he could get something from those drives”
“I see you guys are still busy with this case” you commented frowning.
“You have no idea” Kono sighed “This is the longest case so far” she groaned grabbing her hair in frustration. “And the weirdest” she added after letting a huff of air
“If it wasn’t for those drives, we would have solved this case long ago” Danny groaned.
“I see,” you trailed off considering your options “well, then, I won’t be distracting you anymore, you’ve got a lot of work”
“Oh no, you can stay as much as you want” Your brother quickly reassured you, standing up from his chair and walking up to you to place an arm around your shoulders “It’s fun having you around, and besides, I’ve missed you. We’ve got a lot of catching up to do”
“I don’t want to interfere with anything” you quickly commented.
“Don’t even say it” Kono quickly stopped you “It’s been a while since we’ve seen you around”
“Wanna join us for the rest of day?” your brother suggested, almost pleadingly, squeezing your arm “We need a lot of moral support right now”
“Okay, that sounds funnier than binging some crappy show alone” your mood quickly lightened at the prospect of spending some more time with your ohana and seeing how things worked around.
“Amazing!” Kono cheered walking up to the door “let’s see if Kelly discovered something” She said leading the way.
It was a short walk from your brother’s office to the briefing room. You were so engrossed in a conversation, catching up and talking nonstop with the both of them, that you failed to notice a pair of eyes looking intently at you, following your moves along the corridor. Steve had an idea of who you were, given that his partner never shut up about you.
“Hey, are you even listening to me?” Chin frowned waving a hand in front of the commander’s face and snapped his fingers grabbing his attention. He turned around to discover the cause of the distraction but saw nothing.
“Yeah” Steve cleared his throat “You were talking about” he trailed off waiting for a revelation and waving his hand around before crossing his arms over his chest, looking apologetically and trying to smile sweetly at his colleague to no avail.
“As I was saying” Kelly started again when Jerry’s outburst interrupted him once again, placing his hands on his hips exasperated, grabbing everyone’s attention.
“Y/N/N!” He stood up from his chair and walked up to you to greet you properly.
“Jerry!” you cheered giving him a big hug “long time no see, big guy. What you’ve been up to?”
“Nothing much, the usual” Jerry shrugged. “With my theories and helping these guys”
“Good to see nothing's changed then” you smiled at him and jumped when someone slapped your arm.
“You never cease to interrupt me or what?” Chin gave you a rather serious, yet playful look that soon turned into a grin.
“Chin!” you hugged him tightly too “Do you ever age? You haven’t changed a thing!”
“You should come here more often” Chin joked patting your head.
“Steve, this my baby sister” Danny introduced you to the rather attractive tall man “I don’t know if you have ever met her”
“Commander Steve McGarrett” the young man introduced himself extending a hand towards you, which you gladly took and shook it “And you must be the infamous Y/N, it’s like I already know you, Danno never shuts up talking about you, Y/N this, Y/N that. I’m happy to finally put a face to the name” he continued still shaking your hand.
Now, your relationship with the team was curious, to say the least, you knew everyone and considered them your ohana. Commander Steve McGarrett was the exception. Even though he was one of your brother’s best friend, you were pretty sure were joined at the hip, you never had the occasion to meet him in person, or spend some time with him yet. You knew perfectly who he was because Danny always told you everything that happened during the day when he called you or went to visit him, to keep you updated. But due to your busy schedule with your work and studies and his duties you never had spare time to spend together. And, of course, every time you came back home to spend some time in Hawaii, Danny preferred to spend that time with you alone and the kids.
“Likewise, commander” you nodded giving him a smile, that he thought was brighter than the sun, and before releasing your hand he brought it to his lips to kiss it.
“Ahem, Y/N/N?” Your brother grabbed your attention and hastily turning around to face him making your hair flow. “Why don’t you take a seat over here?” he said patting the chair next to him. You nodded with a smile and quickly moved to that spot, failing to notice how your brother sent daggers to a rather distracted Steve.
“So” Steve cleared his throat, ignoring Danno’s glares, grabbing back the team's attention “apart from the empty industrial ship, do we have any advances on the drives” He wondered turning to Jerry and Chin.
“Nothing. Not a clue” the Lieutenant shook his head defeated “The laptop is too damaged to take anything from it, and despite having tried everything, we can’t manage to get the drives back to work. They are damaged or empty”
“So basically what you’re saying is that we are back to the start again?” Kono stated as everyone grew frustrated.
“Well not really form the start” Jerry chimed in “I might think that the drives might be encrypted, being “empty” and “not working” a way of disguise. But it will take probably days to decrypt them” that grabbed your focus, being encryption your field of work amongst other areas, and raised your hand.
“Yes, Y/N/N?” Your brother nudged you.
“I don’t want to interfere because I know you are a thousand times better qualified than me, but” now you had everyone listening intently at you. “Have you tried combining the hard disk and the memories of the laptop with the drives?”
“What?” Chin raised an eyebrow “How?”
“Maybe the motherboard is not that damaged and doing a ‘quick fix’ you can get the drives to work again” you suggested pointing to the damaged laptop.
“Suggested the nerd” Danny joked earning a slap on the head from Kono.
“Can I take a look?” you looked at everyone eager to help until your eyes landed on the commander who was in charge.
“Honestly, a fresh pair of experts hands would be welcomed” Jerry requested to Steve who motioned for you with his hand, accepting your offer.
“What’s your plan?” Chin stood next to you while Jerry passed the laptop to you.
“First we open what’s left of this device” you suggested grabbing the small screwdriver Ortega offered you. “Thanks” Once the screws were off the cover you opened it, frowning at what you found “Amazing! I've never seen such a fried circuit. Someone took time doing this to make sure it wouldn’t work”
“Great news” Kono complained “Our only clue gone trash”
“Oh don’t worry, everything can be saved. There’s always a way in” you reassured continuing to unclasp things and disconnecting wires, not noticing how everyone shared a look, except Jerry who was carefully and intently watching your every move.
“Even when the laptop is burned and beaten to smithereens?” Steve wondered really curious resting his arms at the right end of the table very curious about your methods, while Kono and your brother stood opposite him.
“It’s the software that counts, not the hardware” you joked giving the commander a thousand watts smile.
“You’re a nerd” your brother picked on you making Kono slap his arm again, and earning a glare from you.
“Thanks, Kono. And you’re an idiot” you retorted placing on the table the fans you disconnected.
“Still, that doesn’t change the fact that you are a computer nerd” you rolled your eyes
“IT engineer, Danno” you let out a breath through your nose disconnecting carefully another part.
“What’s the difference?” Danny kept on joking “still a nerd and a computer nerd”
“I didn’t think you could get any less romantic” Everyone wholeheartedly laughed at that.
“Why can’t you appreciate my sense of humor like that?” Danny playfully complained.
“Because you’re ugly” you quickly replied putting down the last part and smiling at your brother.
“I wouldn’t have summarized it better, sweetheart” Steve joined the banter with a laugh earning a glare from your brother before going back to examine the important parts, mainly the drives and disks.
“I love you, too” Danny grimaced throwing a piece of wire at him.
“Very bad news and very good news” you cheered, once the laptop was dismounted, placing on the table the last piece of the laptop. “Bad news first?”
“Shot” Steve said straitening himself and placing his hand on his hips. “We’re immune to them by now”
“The hard disk is damaged, but I think it can be saved with a bit of love” you explained while giving Jerry said part and looked at the boss.
“And the good news?” Kono spoke “We really need to hear very good news”
“The cache memory and the solid-state drive are intact” you passed them to Chin while your brother gave you a deeply confused frown.
“In Christian, for the ones that aren’t nerds like you,” your brother asked for an explanation with a sweet smile.
“The cache memory stores data so that future requests for that data can be served faster. The data stored in a cache might be the result of an earlier computation or a copy of data stored elsewhere. So whatever the owner did last, this sneak will tell us” You tried to explain as best as you could, making sure everyone followed.
“That’s what I said but they didn’t listen” you chuckled at your brother's childish behavior.
“Okay, that’s great” Steve cheered pointing at you “That’s amazing, what else?”
“It’s actually very simple and common,” you said shrugging of his comment and continued with your explanation “And as the hard disk” you pointed to the part Jerry was holding, which he showed everyone “Is mostly used for mass storage, the solid-state drive, commonly known as SSD” you pointed to the long and rectangular piece Chin was holding, which he also showed “Is used for boosting, the operative system, Windows for example, and most used applications.”
“We have the pieces of the puzzle. We only need to connect them” Jerry agreed having understood what was your point “How do you plan on doing that?” he questioned looking at you curiously.
“Well, I need a motherboard, and wires” you requested biting your lip looking to the discarded pieces and then at Jerry “And a computer of course”
“This way my lady” Jerry motioned for you to follow him.
"Danno?" you called from the back of the room "Can you please bring me a black small box from the bag that I left on your office?"
"Of course!" he answered dropping the screw he was playing with to go retrieve the item you asked for in a hurry.
You went back to the desk holding too many things and yellow wires around your neck. Everyone was in awe at how fast you mounted the parts together, sharing with Jerry and Chin every now and then
the different options you had. Danny came back to the room moments later, waving a small box in his hand.
“Yes!” you squealed when your brother passed you the small box “you’re the best” you added fist-bumping your brother.
“What’s that?” Steve said picking the small black box in his hands to examine it.
“It’s a crafted CPU” you explained while you linked the yellow wires to motherboard “It can work as a computer if you connect a screen to it”
“Cool,” he nodded giving a pout of approval placing it back on the table.
“Great” you smiled once you made sure every wire was well linked “Next step, connect this baby to a computer”
Steve already pulled the chair from the computer for you. Giving him a curt nod and a smile, that he gladly returned, you plugged on of the yellow wires from the motherboard to the CPU of the computer and another to your black box, before you took a seat. Once you were comfortable and settled Chin passed you the drivers that were driving the team crazy, plugging them to the box and proceeded to work away on them typing very fast.
Chin, Kono and your brother had wandered away and scattered around the room giving you space for you to work properly, while Jerry grabbed a chair and took a seat to your left sharing his theories with you. Steve genuinely curious about what you were doing and eager to learn more from you, even though he had no idea about what you were doing, grabbed another chair and sat to your right. In a couple of minutes, you had managed to prepare everything and hesitated your hands hovering over the keyboard.
“What’s wrong?” Steve worried genuinely concerned while Jerry placed a reassuring hand on your shoulder.
“I’m about to break a handful of dozens of rules,” You said frowning to the screen and looking intently to the enter key you index finger hovering over it, touching but not pressing “The full weight of the law can drop on whoever presses this button. Like an anvil”
Before you even get to finish your speech, Steve had leaned forward and with no hesitation whatsoever, pressed the enter key and leaned back on his chair crossing his arms over his chest with a satisfied look, making you turn in your seat to look at him with your eyes wide open and your mouth slightly ajar. He simply raised an eyebrow and shrugged one shoulder back. Could someone make the carefreeness look hot and rock some bicep tattoos? Apparently, it’s big hot damn yes from Commander McGarrett.
Those thoughts stopped right there when a ding rang around the room that something happened with the drives. Suddenly, Jerry laughed grabbing your attention and looking back to the screen as well as the rest around the room, all of them gathering around you.
“Did it work?” Lieutenant Kelly wondered hopefully, standing behind Jerry “If it worked you have beer supply for life”
“I don’t know if it worked” You frowned reading the screen that asked for a password to be entered.
“Yes, it did” Jerry nodded eagerly
“It asks for some credentials” You frowned trying to look for patrons “They look like some GPS coordinates” you suggested making Steve lean forward resting an arm over the back of your chair, to take a better look at the screen.
“Try the industrial ship location” The commander suggested passing you a piece of paper with messy scribbled numbers which you quickly typed them.
“We’re in” You cheered high fiving Jerry “It worked!”
“Good job, kid” Chin smirked affectionately patting your head “She’s good” he stated the obvious whispering to your brother.
“She’s amazing” he confirmed looking down at you with a proud smile, placing both of his hands on your shoulders and giving them a squeeze
Meanwhile, you continued analyzing the estrange documents in the devices. Someone took time making sure no one could read them. Almost anyone. They didn’t take you into account. The level of encryption was something you have never seen before. This person was very good but not as good as you. No one was better than you.
“Guys” you suddenly exclaimed instantly grabbing the commander’s attention, who leaned forward and rested his arm over the back of your chair. “These are not simple drives. They are part of a fallen military satellite.”
“How do you know that,” Steve asked growing curious every second and not licking a single bit where this case was heading.
“The company I worked before for worked with putting into orbit satellites, mostly for defense. Of course, they never stay up long, they have a certain period of life. Some months ago one of the old ones came back down and the location where it was supposed to land was empty, so the company assumed that it disintegrated and was destroyed in the process, not taking into account that someone might have stolen it. At least we made sure to retrieve any important data from them. It’s mostly scrapped material, but some parts can be reused” You quickly explained to everyone “Now someone here reused these drivers and they are hiding footprints, amongst other things that are encrypted” you displayed a footprint causing Steve to frown in thought before he widened his eyes in realization.
“Of course we couldn’t find anything” the blue-eyed man groaned running a hand down his face “We didn’t look where we needed to. Their headquarter is located underground” He stood up giving instructions to Kono, Chin and your brother who quickly got into action. “Y/N do you have anything else to do today?” you turned to look at him but he stopped “Change of plans you’ll be working with us. Can you take this with you?”
“Yes, but most of it is still encrypted and I need to work on it. Give me a second, though” you quickly got into action transferring everything to your black box.
“Good, you’ll be our eyes. Jerry, Danno already went to warn Lou, can you go to him and explain everything?”
“Coming right up” Jerry nodded patting you on the shoulder.
Once everything was transferred to the box you disconnected everything and switched off the computer and disarming the parts from the motherboard and McGarrett helped you secure the parts, given they were important proofs in the case.
The walk to the silver Camaro RS, where your brother was waiting for you, leaning in the car and holding your purse, was filled with small chitchat, that consisted of you talking about your work these past months, and jokes. The conversation flowed easily between the two of you. It felt like you knew each other from a long time ago. Danny, noticing the happy smiles his partner sent you, he couldn’t help but sent a warning glare to Steve, who simply rolled his eyes and got in the driver seat, like the overprotective big brother he was while he opened the passenger door for you.
You, of course, didn’t notice that exchange between them, too worried about the discovery wanting to get back to it as soon as possible. Once you were settled and heard the reassuring click of the seatbelt, you started drumming away with fast taps on the keyboard, tuning out any other noise except the soft hum of the radio playing some station. Steve glanced at you amazed at how fast you focused on your work what made share a look with cranky man at the back seat throw the rearview mirror, who shrugged back at him clearly very used to that.
“Y/N/N?” Danny called from the back seat, leaning forward between the two seats when you hummed in acknowledgment not taking your focus from the screen “Aren’t your fingers sore?”
“Nah” you replied pouting your lips pressing enter harsher than normal to make your point “I’m used to it”
“You caveman, tell me again why we need to bring her with us?” Danny questioned his partner with steam almost coming out of his ears.
You turned to your brother with a curious look “Danny, this is a really coarse tracker, even though the hardware is not. Amazing work but raw, it can’t work properly if it’s too far away from the area” you tried to reassure your brother in your sweet voice. “Besides someone needs to take care of you, so you won’t do anything stupid. Don’t be a whiner”
“I’m trying, okay?” he was clearly irritated, At what you didn’t know.
Danno?”
You knew your voice had a way of calming your brother down “Yes, kiddo?” His voice immediately softened.
“If this is your car, why is Commander McGarrett driving it?” Clearly, you couldn’t wait to tease him back.
Danny’s smile dropped from his face and turned into a frown as soon as Steve snorted “Because this animal has control issues” he slapped Steve’s arm.
“What?” Steve, exclaimed very offended “Control issues? Why do you have to make up such lies now?”
“What,” Danny turned to Steve annoyed and voice rising “Lies? What lies? If not lying, then why do you always have to drive my car? How do you explain that, hm?”
The commander’s hands left the steering wheel, “Is it wrong for me to spoil a friend, I’m chauffeuring you around. I want you to feel special”
“Well, that’s just hogwash,” Danny said to Steve “Keep your hands on the wheel, you idiot”
“Neat” you whispered in awe tuning out their banter looking back to your laptop when the screen flashed showing a map of the local area.
“What?” The men turned to look at you but Danny force Steve’s face forward with his hand
“I reprogrammed the software of they used in the satellite, that was used as a tracker, and now have access too” you laughed in happiness.
“She’s a genius” Your brother shook his head in bewilderment.
“Thank god you took all the stupid with you then” Steve joked whispering stifling a laugh, what sent the two men into another round of bantering.
After some turns, maneuvers and car overtaking, the three of you finally arrived in no time to the area where the SWAT team was deployed and getting ready for the action, and followed the pair to the van, laptop under your arm.
“Commander McGarrett, Detective Williams” Lou Groover greeted as soon as he saw you. “I see you brought great company with you,” He said smiling at you.
“Captain Groover is good to see you again” you smiled back shaking his hand in greeting.
“Little Williams will be our eyes once we’re inside the building” Steve explained while Lou led you three to the control point where he indicated a place for you to settle where two men were getting ready some devices.
“Ready for some action, Little Williams?” Lou teased playfully raising an eyebrow at you.
“Ready as ever I will be” You confidently nodded and walked up to the SWAT agents who helped you get everything ready after greeting each other, while you explained your plan to the captain and the chaotic duo.
“My men are at your service” Lou patted you on the shoulder once you were properly seated “Marshal, Rogers, she’s in charge”
“Yes, sir” they replied with a nod and handed you an earpiece which you quickly placed in your ear.
“Be careful” you turned to the pair and with a salute, they went to meet the rest of the team “Radio check” you said into the intercom to make sure everyone heard you.
“Read you loud and clear” McGarrett was the first one to reply receiving a series of confirmation of the rest of the team.
“Perfect” you acknowledged typing away on your laptop “I have accessed the building security to have more control of the area” you informed signaling to the man on your left to control the cameras on the inside while you commanded the other SWAT to control the cameras on the outside and perimeter.
The mission flowed smoothly from there with your coordination and skills. The building was evacuated in no time and bad guys were on their way to be interrogated. After high fiving and congratulating the two SWATs that worked along with you for a successful operation, you thanked them and exited the van to meet the rest of the Five-O team.
McGarrett was talking to a SWAT when you came into view and caught his attention, once he noticed you approaching them. He bid goodbye to the agent in a hurry and parted ways to walk up to you. Usually, you were wary of any uniformed man, but you had acknowledged the fact that the tactic gear looked especially good on him
“Danny never told me you were an expert tactician” The tall blue-eyed man smiled at you.
“Even though I’ve worked with military, I can assure you, I’m very far from being an expert” you couldn’t contain the shy smile of your own you looked at your shows.
“You did a great job today, even more so than your brother” the commander chuckled really amazed at what he had witnessed today “We would have been lost if you hadn’t helped us today”
“Is my duty as a civilian to help the authorities as much as I can” You gave him a curt nod, not believing a word he was saying. “The Five-O and SWAT teams are the real heroes. I’m just a mere IT girl”
“A great one in your job” McGarrett complimented crossing his arms over his chest “There’s a vacant in the team for you if you want it”
You pondered his offer for a moment, were you really ready to get back into action? “Thanks for the offer, Steve” this was the first time you called him by his first name and his heart skipped a bit “but, even though I love my job and technology, I’m not one of those people that want to spend the rest of their life sitting in a chair typing away until their fingerprints are gone” declined his offer with a sad smile looking into his beautiful eyes.
“Tell me you’ll think about it at least”
“Of course” you nodded at him looking to where your brother was talking to an officer “I’ll think about it. It was a pleasure working with you, Lieutenant Commander McGarrett” You saluted him with a happy smile.
“It was my pleasure” Steve returned the salute and watched you walk up to your brother with content yet forlorn look.
Dinner was almost ready when the oven dinged signaling that the pumpkin pie was fully cooked. All it needed now was cool down.
“Is that pumpkin pie I smell?” Danny startled you making you hastily turn around and almost dropping the pie.
“No pie for you” squinting your eyes at him you placed the pie in the windowsill so none of the kids, nor Danno could eat it.
“Now you’re just being mean” He walked up to the fridge to pick a water bottle “You did amazing today. And you really must have impressed Steve with your hacking skills, because he doesn’t offer a place to everybody”
“Oh, you heard that?” You wondered wiping the counter with a clean rag.
“Steve told me” Danny clarified after taking a gulp from the water bottle “He’s my partner. We don’t have secrets with each other” you laughed but your brother could tell something was off. “What’s wrong?” he wondered placing an arm around your shoulders.
“I got a call from ACID today” You placed your arm around his middle without looking at him. “They offered me a job”
“Whoah!” Your brother cheered placing his hands on your shoulders and turning you to face him “That’s the company you wanted to work for since you started your degree. That’s amazing. Wait, a second why aren’t you smiling, and jumping?” he frowned upon seeing your expression.
“It’s in the Mainland” you simply said shrugging one shoulder.
“And?” his frown deepened, “I thought it was your dream. It seemed like a good opportunity for you. That’s why you never stopped talking about it”
“I don’t know” you sighed “I’m not so sure anymore. I don’t want to be sat all day in front of a screen” you hugged your brother “Even though, I love it. It’s a big company and I don’t what to be treated like a number”
“Then, are you going to accept Steve’s offer?” Danny hugged you back kissing your cheek.
“I don’t know, Danno” you started swaying “Office work is not my thing”
“You’re a genius” your brother reassured you “You’ll find the answer. Besides you still have a lot of time to think over the situation. And whatever you decide” he paused to cradle your face with his hands “I’ll support you”
“Thanks, Danno” You smiled brightly and hugging him tight until the doorbell rang.
“Always” he kissed your head and went to answer the door “Do me a favor and check on that pie!”
“Aunty Y/N?” Grace called for you from the backyard, where she and Charlie were playing “Aunty Y/N!” Charlie repeated.
“Yes, monkeys!” you shouted walking through the corridor making them laugh. In a second they were running towards you and when you noticed them they had already tackled you to the ground, making you tickle them in return.
“You can have my bed tonight” Grace suddenly squealed “No, no. You can sleep with me!” Charlie offered.
You chuckled at your niece and nephew's behavior “What are you talking about? Where are you going to sleep, then Grace?”
“We don’t want you to go” Charlie pleaded with puppy eyes while his sister copied him.
“You nosy little things” you softly said tickling them and earning a laugh from them “Guys, I’m not going anywhere, yet” you reassured them hugging them to you “We still got a week to do plenty of things” you started kissing their cheeks a million times making them giggle like crazy. “But for now let’s eat some pumpkin pie with vanilla ice and cream cheese frosting”
You three stood up and when you saw they weren’t ready yet you ran to the kitchen to grab the first piece of the pie. However, when you arrived there the pie was nowhere to be seen.
“Danno!” you shouted grabbing walking to the door “Did you stole my pie?” you asked irritated.
What you didn’t expect was two full-grown men fighting over a half-eaten pie. More like commander McGarrett, holding the pie over his head with a hand and holding your brother back with the other, while struggling to masticate a big bite of food. Grabbing a chair, you placed it next to the door, to steal back your pie. The commander didn’t notice that, and you managed to reach the kitchen to serve the rest of the pie for your niece, nephew and you.
“Did Uncle Steve, steal the pie again?” Grace asked you watching how you placed a big ball of ice cream on top of the pie. “He’s on a donut diet” Charlie eagerly placed his plate next to you so you could place the ice cream on top of his piece too
Definitely, you didn’t know what that meant, nor wanted to know “Yes, Uncle Steve was being a pie thief”
Later on, after you five had dinner, you were sure you hadn’t ever seen a mean eat like that and be that fit, Steve was enjoying the sun, sitting on a chair in your brother’s backyard and you quietly approached him holding two beers.
“Hey there, Little Williams” Steve smiled upon seeing you, offering you a seat next to him.
“Hey there, Commander McGarrett” You returned the smile offering him a beer that gladly accepted.
“Steve” he interrupted taking the beer from you “My name is Steve”
“My name is Y/N, though” You tilted your head to the side to look at him.
“I like Little Williams better” The man smirked when you rolled your eyes but chuckling you took a seat next to him. “So, did you make a decision?” He wondered taking a gulp from his beer bottle.
The sun was starting to set and you watched how Charlie and Grace played with the Nerfs you bought them with a content smile, and then turned to look at him who was already looking at you expectantly “I think I already made a decision”
Writer’s Month 2020 - To Find A Way
Prompt No.14 - Metamorphosis Part I
Chapter 1-6
Chapter 7
"Hey, Tanaka wants results on the case, asap. We need to come up with something useful today. He's pissed. He breathes down our neck. I hate it when he does that. We need hard proof to get that damn search warrant." Kono shoves a coffee to go under Danny's nose and hops up to sit on his desk.
Danny turns his phone upside down and pretends he hasn't been checking again if Steve had texted.
"What are you doing?" Kono's eyes are on his cell.
"Nothing."
"Uh-huh."
The hustle and bustle at HPD is intense with all the cops coming and going. An angry drunk shouts obscenities into the open space of the office where he sits cuffed to the chair next to Meka's desk. Danny watches the old woman who has lost her parrot. The poor woman clutches her purse and looks overwhelmed with what's going on at the police station.
"Kono, make sure Duke takes care of that lady over there. She's too old to sit for so long and she misses her pet. Can you do that?" Danny grabs his coffee and hopes Kono drops the thing with his phone. "Duke's always good with confused, old ladies. He'll make her feel safe and he'll find her bird."
"He's on his way back from questioning a witness. I'll call him and tell him. What's the plan for today?" Kono dials a number on her cell and looks expectantly at Danny.
"Let's check those bank accounts again. We need to find out how they get that money off the island. How they sell the puppies." Danny rattles down the points on their to-do list. He reaches for the case files with their suspects. "I'll comb through our interrogation protocols again to find the needle in the haystack. This lumberjack guy lies. We need some results fast. I wanna get back to the guy's house. I don't mind to punch the asshole in the face. We need to find the drugs and the puppies. God, I hate cases with puppy trafficking. People are so sick." Danny gets up and signals Kono to follow him.
"Where are we going?" Kono hops off the desk to catch up with him.
"I need a quiet place. I can't think in here. It's a mess and too loud. Let's go and sit at Kame's place. Maybe he knows stuff we don't. Let's work together."
"Tanaka wouldn't approve." Kono teases.
"I don't care shit about what Tanaka approves. He wants results. He'll get results. Come on, let's get out of here."
Danny checks his phone again. He can't fight that strong pull to just check on the incoming texts. It's pathetic and he's aware of that. But still. Damn it. Nothing. Danny senses the same dull tweak of disappointment when all he sees is the screensaver. It's Grace's picture. He loves Grace but still, he had expected a least one text from Steve. It's been days since he's watched Steve getting smaller in the rear mirror.
Grace's beloved face makes him smile of course. It's not that he doesn't love to look at a picture of his baby girl. But he would have liked if Steve had acted on that rain check. Steve hasn't texted in nearly six days. Not one lousy letter and it's messing with Danny's mood. No one needs to point out how stupid he behaves. Rationally Danny can deal with it, emotionally he can't. He worries Steve might have forgotten his number. But hey, he's ex-elite force. He should draw those few numbers from his mind with ease. And that leads Danny to the conclusion he tries to avoid. The one where the only logical explanation would be that Steve's just not interested and that he's forgotten about Danny.
Danny checks again, just to be sure he hasn't missed anything. He waits until Kono opens the door for him. His eyes are glued to the small display.
"Danny, we need to talk." Kono pushes the door open.
"About what?" He slips the cell into his back pocket.
"I've created a tally sheet to log how many times you've checked your phone since you've walked through that door this morning." Kono grins. "The log-ins are from five days. There's something going on. You never check your phone that often unless you expect something. It's not work-related I can tell. I smell romance in the air." Kono has this predator smile on her face Danny has learned to fear. She has tasted blood. Danny's in deep trouble. "You've met someone." That's not even a question. She's made a statement as if she sees right through him.
Danny's lost for words. "You did what? A tally sheet? What happened to privacy? And by the way, it's none of your business."
"You work with a bunch of crazy cops. Yes, it's my business. You're distracted all the time. Did you think I wouldn't notice?"
"I don't know? I guess? Could you just shut up about it? It's nothing." Danny defends himself.
"Hey, you just stood there, waiting for me to open the goddamn door for you because you were so busy with checking your phone!" Kono shouts. "Tell me!"
"No."
"It's my business too when it affects your work."
"It doesn't affect my work!"
"I brought you coffee. Every damn day! Give me at least some details. The big picture! Who's this person who makes you forget about everything around you."
Danny stops dead in his tracks and gapes at her. "You brought me coffee hoping I would feed you some rom-com shit you just made up?"
"It was your favorite coffee, brah! Kamekona doesn't break either. He won't say a damn word!"
Danny can't even throw his hands in the air. He holds on to his coffee and to the files he picked from under his arm. "You did what??"
"I asked Kame what's up with you. He wouldn't say but his face twitched. You know the way it does when he hides something. But he wouldn't budge. So, that only means that something important is going on and you guys, have a secret you won't tell me. And that secret is related to you and the constant checking your phone!"
The smile splits Danny's face in half. "You're a damn good cop, Kono-san."
"Don't, nuh-huh, don't Kono-san me, not working, Danny! Who is it? You try to hide everything. It's extremely suspicious."
"Get it, shut up, and don't make me push you out the door when we're on the highway," Danny grumbles. "We take your car. You drive. I go through the files on our way to Kame." Danny inhales and rolls his eyes. "And no more questions, Kono, I mean it."
Danny's phone rings. He jerks to the unexpected sound. Kono snickers with her eyes all over him. She doesn't miss a single detail.
"Eyes on the road, Kono. Jesus!"
"You're smiling like a stupid idiot." She says.
Danny's too busy to reach for his phone. It's Rachel. His stomach drops fast. The disappointment makes him bite the inside of his cheek.
"That's not the person you have expected." Kono leans in and reads the caller ID on the screen. She has no feelings for personal boundaries. She's a pain in the ass today.
"Kono! For fuck's sake, watch the road!"
"Brah, you act strange. All tense and shit. I don't like it. Spill it already, dude."
Danny scoffs an answer but takes Rachel's call. "Rachel, what's up? Everything's fine? Is Grace okay?"
When he hangs up Kono just takes one look at him and is all serious again. "Danny? What's up? What do you need?"
"Can you drive me to the hospital?"
"Whoa! Something happened?" She shouts.
"No, God no. Nothing. Rachel's fine, Grace's fine." Danny runs his hand over his face. "You know, I told you Rachel undergoes in vitro fertilization because she and Stan can't get pregnant. She got the call. She has a two-hour window to harvest one of her eggs. She's at the hospital. Stan's in a meeting. She has Grace and she's scared and upset. I'm her backup if Stan can't be there.  I'll look after Grace when she's under. Can we make a detour to the hospital?" Danny explains.
"Sure, brah, whatever you need."
Kono drops him off and snatches the case files out of his hand. "Leave this to me. I'm at Kame's. Call me if you need anything. Be with Grace and let Rachel do what she came to do. Stan's on his way. I called the office. I'll come and pick you up. Call me, okay?"
"Thanks, Kono. I owe you." Danny's thoughts are already somewhere else.
"No, you don't owe me a single thing, Danny-san. You're ohana but you're not off the hook about your secret romance."
Danny sighs and shakes his head. He combs his fingers through the ruffled hairdo. He watches how Kono filters back into traffic.
The reception at the fertility center/the child birthing ward is painted in calm and friendly colors. The staff is always caring and supportive. Danny has mixed feelings to step into this realm where sadness and happiness are equally balanced. He and Rachel had never any difficulties getting pregnant. He feels deeply sorry for Stan and Rachel.
"Danno!" A loud, high-pitched voice called his name. With her pigtails flying Grace runs right into his open arms.
"Hi, monkey! Hey, love to see you, baby-girl. Everything's fine?"
"I don't like this place." Grace wraps her small arms around his neck.
"I'll make sure mommy is fine and then we head outside to check-out that awesome-looking playground, okay?"
Grace nods and holds on to him. Danny carries his daughter over to where Rachel gets checked her personal details. "Hi, Rachel, how are you?"
"Hi, Daniel. Thank you so much for coming on such short notice. I didn't have anyone else to call." She sniffs but stands tall. She's a brave woman. Danny's glad they've worked hard to become friends for the sake of Grace's happiness. They're good parents.
"Hey, everything's going to be fine. I'm here. I'll take care of Grace. Kono called Stan. He's on his way. You go and make sure you're one step closer to having a baby, okay?" Danny gently pets her shoulder. She seems so upset and nervous. Her eyes are big. She wears the stress like a cloak around her shoulders. The mood of her mother makes Grace cling to Danny. He holds her tightly to assure that everything is okay.
Rachel bites her lips. She shows a watery smile. "Thank you, a lot, Daniel. Can you – can you make sure Stan comes and finds me once he's here?"
"Yes, will do."
"Okay, I'll give you a call when I'm done." Rachel strokes Grace's back, "bye baby, mommy's back soon. Stay with Danno, okay?"
Danny and Grace wave Rachel goodbye. They watch until the automatic doors with the blinded glass close behind her back. Danny's gaze falls on a heavily pregnant woman who sits in the waiting area holding her round belly with her arms. She looks a bit stressed and her bangs are wet. Her cheeks are flushed. She sits there with her eyes closed and seems to breathe in a calming pattern. She's so young. Danny feels the distinct protective instinct kicking in. He hopes she's not alone and there's a loving husband who takes good care of her.
Grace wiggles in his arms. "Danno, can we go now?"
"Of course, monkey. Let's go and have some fun."
The automatic doors open again and a tall, dark, handsome man walks over to the blond, young woman. He wears cargo pants, dark, solid boots, and a rumpled navy-blue V-neck shirt hanging out of his pants. Danny recognizes the tattoos first. The way the guy walks over to the pregnant woman looks so familiar. Danny imagines bare feet and worn blue jeans and a lot of dirt.
Steve.
Danny hears Grace babbling and complaining. He holds onto her and watches Steve. He carries a bottle of water and sits down next to the beautiful-looking soon-to-be-mama. He gently brushes at the wet strands of hair to get it out of her eyes. Danny just stares at the perfect picture. He should have known it. Guys like Steve are taken, no matter the damage they carry around. Danny bites his tongue and swallows a pain so sharp as if stabbed in the gut.
The young woman must have said something because Steve's head darts around and he meets Danny's eyes. Danny hears the nurse at the reception talking on the phone. He realizes how Grace wants to be let down but he only sees Steve and the way he takes him in. The way his eyes shoot to Grace and back to him, and how he shuts down. How he pushes Danny away without saying a single word, or even twitching a finger. Steve doesn't smile, doesn't show he knows him. Danny feels deeply hurt and when he's hurt, he gets bold.
"Come on, Grace. I need to say 'hi' to a friend and I promise we're leaving after that." He puts Grace down and takes her small hand in his.
"Hi, Steve. Nice to meet you. I didn't know you're going to be a father soon. Congratulations." He says with the sweetest smile he finds in him. The hurt is like wet sand that pulls him down.
Steve clenches his jaw and stays silent. His gaze gets all soft when he looks at Grace though. "Hi, sweetheart, what's your name?"
Grace hugs Danny's leg and hides her face at his thigh. He protectively shields her by hugging her shoulder before he cups the back of her head. "That's Grace, my daughter."
Steve withdraws even more. He shuts down in a way Danny only senses and it hurts. It hurts. And he knows he has no right to feel hurt because he has no claim on this man.
"Okay, guys, I don't know what's this all about but Steve, you're rude. Just say 'hi' to your friend. God, Punk, where are your manners?" The young woman grunts and pushes herself to sit upright with her legs spread wide to make space for her round belly. Steve's immediately at her side to help her.
Danny's afraid she's going to pop any minute. "I'm Danny, hi, nice to meet you. Steve and I only met once. He might not recognize me. I wish you all the best and I hope you're doing fine. When is your due date?"
The woman's mouth falls open. She grabs Danny's hand with both hands and keeps it sandwiched in hers. "You are Danny?" She gasps. "Wow!"
A shudder of excitement ripples through Danny's chest.
Steve jerks out of his stupor. "Mary," his voice carries a warning tone, "just – please? Could you not?"
Grace whispers too loud that this woman has a baby in her belly. This makes even Steve smile.
"I'm Mary. It's so nice to meet you, Danny. Steve talked about you and I'm so happy to meet you. He promised I might one day but you know I'm impatient. And here you are. And I'm not due for two weeks. But our little sweetheart makes her own rules. It was a false alarm. I told Steve but he freaked out and wanted to go to the hospital to be sure. He's my brother, by the way, my big brother. Kawika, my husband, is on his way but he wasn't there when it happened."
Danny has a tight grip on his features. The odd mix of emotions makes him sleepy. What does all this even mean that Mary just spilled with this cute smile on her face? He can't look at Steve.
"It's nice to meet you too, Mary. I'm glad everything's fine." He wants to add more like thank you for taking good care of Steve or any similar, emotional shit he has no right to say but Mary's name gets called.
Danny turns to spot a good-looking man, dark skin, curly hair who jogs over to kneel at Mary's side. "Hi, baby, I came as fast as possible. How are you? How's our little nuglet?" The man kisses Mary's belly with so much love and devotion Danny has to look away.
"All the best to you, guys. I take Grace outside to play."
"Danny, wait!" Mary speaks up. "Kawika I want you to meet Danny. Danny, meet Kawika, my husband."
There's a glint of recognition in Kawika's eyes. His handshake is solid, strong, and full of trust. "Nice to finally meet you, Danny."
Danny's isn't far behind with being brilliant at filling in the gaps. "You're a friend of Kame."
Kawika's smile is blindingly open and kind. "Yes, and thank you."
Danny knows instantly he's referring to Steve and what has happened almost a week ago. Steve has talked about him with his loved ones. Danny's mood rises like a morning sun. He feels great. "You take care of your sweet wife."
"I will." Kawika turns and pulls Steve into a fierce embrace. They seem to be very close.
"Danny," Steve's voice makes him stop again, "I'll come with you and Grace if you don't mind?" That's the first sentence Steve says since they've met again.
"Sure, let's go."
On the way out, Graces holds on to Danny's hand and peeps up at Steve who walks beside her. Out of the corner of his eyes, Danny sees how Steve gifts her with lovely smiles until she giggles. Danny's heart just flips over in his chest.
Burn the Ships, Chapter Six
A/N:  Merry Christmas, ya’ll! ^.^
. . . . .
Chapter Six
“Let me get this straight: you’re planning on interrogating a spy right here on the dock?”
Steve nodded. “Yeah, that’s right. Alex is still getting stitched up, and it would waste time to haul him back to the Palace.”
Danny opened his mouth, closed it again, sighed, then said, “You know what? That’s actually not the craziest thing you’ve ever said.”
“Thanks… I think.”
“Do you really expect him to tell you anything, though?”
“If he knows what’s good for him.”
“Just promise me you won’t shoot him. I don’t think the governor would be able to get you out of that one.”
Steve stayed silent as he turned to go back down the dock to where they’d left Agent Branning under the careful supervision of Lou Grover.
“Steven. Do not shoot that man, do you hear me?” Danny started after him. “You know what? I’d better just come with you because I know you, and I wouldn’t put it past you.”
Steve might have smiled if the situation were different. “He’s complicit in the abuse of a child, Danny. So if my gun happens to go off and the bullet happens to shatter his knee cap -- well…”
Danny’s hand came down hard on his shoulder, spinning him around. “Steve, listen to me. I know you’re angry -- you think I’m not? I keep thinking, ‘what if that were Grace?’ and it makes me sick to my stomach, okay? But you can’t help this kid from prison. That’s all I’m saying.”
“I know that, Danny; I’m well aware. But I’m getting answers once and for all, and I will do whatever I need to in order to make that happen.”
Danny sighed again before turning and continuing on his way.
Now a few steps behind his partner, Steve arrived just in time to hear Danny say, “You see this guy behind me? He’s more than a little cranky and definitely hot-headed. So if I were you, I’d just tell him what he wants to know, because there is literally no telling what he might do if you don’t -- and, believe me, I’ve seen him do some crazy things.”
“Is that supposed to scare me?”
“Just stating the facts. So if he ends up shooting you in the knee, don’t say I didn’t warn you.”
Steve almost smiled as Danny stepped to the side. “What were you doing here in Hawaii?”
“Commander McGarrett, you and I both know I came for a vacation with my ward.”
“Yeah, and you and I both know that’s a load of crap.”
Branning shrugged. “I’m afraid I can’t help you.”
“Ten people came down here to kill you and Alex. You can’t expect me to let this go.”
“Wrong place, wrong time. You know how it is,” he replied with a  condescending smirk.
Not even a minute had passed and Steve was already done with this. “Okay. Well, let me tell you what I think, and then we’ll see if you stick with that story, shall we?”
“Allow me to reintroduce myself: I am Lieutenant Commander Steven J. McGarrett, former member of SEAL team six. I’ve served in a lot of countries, seen a lot of action. So when there are four former drug dealers dead on my island that all have scorpion tattoos that identify them as former Scorpia assassins, that raises some questions.”
Steve realized then that, although Branning worked for the CIA, he’d probably never been a field agent -- or, at least, was long retired from it.
“How do you know about that? There’s no way you’ve ever had clearance high enough.”
“Yeah, well, when your team is in Afghanistan and accidentally uncovers a cell of them instead of ISIS, you kinda become privy to that information.
“So here’s my theory: Alex was sent undercover to discover if these particular guys were still a threat, and if they were, to eliminate them. How’d I do?”
“That would be child abuse.”
Steve felt his fist crack into the agent’s face before he’d made the conscious decision to swing. He could feel the anger radiating off of Lou and Danny beside him and knew they would have loved to be the ones to do that, too. He couldn’t keep the tremor out of his voice as he growled, “The fact that you can say that with a straight face is enough reason for me to want to shoot you right here, right now, and I’d bet my life Lou and Danny would testify that you went down in the shootout.”
Branning spit to the side and turned his head back towards Steve, a bruise already starting to form across his cheekbone.  “It’s not like he was forced into it.”
“And how, pray tell, does that justify this? Does any child choose to be abused?”
Branning smirked. “You can’t prove a word of this, McGarrett, and you know it. Alex chose to work for the company, and he can leave any time he wants.”
“Yeah, I doubt that.”
“No, I mean it. Taking care of that kid is like walking around with sand in your shoes. I didn’t volunteer for this, but he did -- that’s just the job. I’d be more than happy for someone to take him off my hands, but that’s never going to happen because Alex is here because he wants to be.”
Steve knew that was a lie; Alex had told him as much, that he’d never wanted this, but he felt trapped. But, if it was truly the case that Alex was free to leave, then maybe all Steve needed to do was give him a reason.
He glanced back over his shoulder, wondering how Alex was doing. He’d seemed a little squeamish when stitches were mentioned, and Chin was with him, but honestly Steve wished he was the one sitting with the kid right now. Turning back and unclenching his jaw, he said, “Lou, take him to the station and have him booked for child abuse.”
“With pleasure.” Lou stepped over and hauled Branning to his feet by the arm.
Branning chuckled. “It won’t stick.”
“Yeah, probably not, but it will waste a few hours of your precious time.” And be probable enough cause for CPS to temporarily pull Alex’s custody from you.
As Steve watched them walk away, Danny side-stepped closer. “What -- no ‘book ‘im, Danno’?”
“No. It’s Christmas Eve, and if we still wanna have this party, you need to get home.”
“That is a very good point. You still coming?”
“Yeah -- but, hey? Maybe plan for one more.”
He could feel Danny staring at him before he asked, “Alex?”
“Yeah. I - uh, really need to have a talk with him and make a couple of calls, but…”
Danny nodded and clapped him on the shoulder as he started to leave. “Alright. I’ll see you later tonight then.”
I just hope this works.
. . .
“Hey, there he is.” Chin nodded in the direction of the dock.
Alex glanced up but quickly returned his gaze back down to his hands. “You think he’s mad?”
“Probably -- but less at you than you might think. I’m sure he’s more relieved that your arm looked worse than it is.”
“I broke my promise. Again.”
“You did what you thought was best at the time. Steve will understand that.”
The paramedic was just finishing wrapping his arm when Alex saw Steve’s boots stop on the pavement in front of him.
“Hey. Give us a minute?”
Alex watched the medic’s shoes disappear, his heart pounding in his chest. He really didn’t want to have this conversation right now -- or ever, really.
“Danny already took off, so can I hitch a ride with you?”
“Of course,” he heard Chin reply. “Looks like I picked a good day to drive my car instead of the bike, huh? I’ll wait over there; take your time.”
“Thanks.”
As the lieutenant’s boots retreated, Alex lost his last buffer. Silence fell between them, and after a moment, Alex couldn’t stand it any longer, so he blurted out the first and only thing his exhausted brain could come up with.
“I’m sorry I ruined your shirt.”
He wasn’t expecting the commander to burst out laughing, and his head snapped up at the sound.
“That’s really what you’re concerned about right now, huh?” McGarrett chuckled. “Kid, that is so low on my list of priorities right now -- it’s not even on the radar.”
Alex watched, not knowing what to do now, as McGarrett took a couple of steps and hoisted himself to sit on the gurney next to him with a tired sigh, all humor suddenly forgotten as he stared out towards the lagoon. Here it comes, he thought, but when McGarrett spoke, it wasn’t what he was expecting at all.
“More than five years ago now, I was sent on a black op into North Korea. I took my best buddy with me, and our goal was to extract a man named Anton Hess. The mission was a success, but I lost my friend in the process. He covered me so I could get Anton out, and if he hadn’t sacrificed himself that day, we’d both be dead right now.
“But as I was transporting Hess back, our convoy got hit, and he ended up dead, too. In retaliation, Anton’s brother, Victor, killed my father. In the span of a day, I lost two of the most important people in my life.
“I came back to Hawaii for my dad’s funeral, and that’s when the late Governor Jameson offered me this job. It started as a way to track down Victor Hess, but it turned into so much more and, as it happened, turned out to be exactly the change that I needed.” He paused, finally turning to face Alex. It was easy to see the sincerity and conviction burning in his eyes.
“I’m not going to pretend to know exactly how you feel, but I understand what it’s like to have the people you love killed and to not be able to do anything to prevent it. I know… I know what it’s like to have your world ripped apart, and how it feels to think nothing is ever going to be okay again, to throw yourself into something -- anything -- just to have a reason to keep going.
“But eventually you have to stop running. You have to let yourself heal. And you can’t do that by just ignoring it and adding more trauma on top of what you already have.
“It’s okay to let yourself heal, and if you can’t get there on your own, it’s okay to ask for help.”
Alex couldn’t stand it any longer. He turned his gaze away, throat tight with emotion, focusing instead on where he was twisting his hands in his lap. After a moment, he choked out, “Lieutenant Kelly told me about how you recruited your team. Detective Williams was struggling to adjust to life here after a messy divorce; Lieutenant Kelly himself was a disgraced cop; Officer Kalakaua wasn’t even out of the academy yet; Captain Grover was forced into early retirement from SWAT. But none of those things mattered to you. You always seem to show up in people’s lives when they need someone the most. Do you think that’s true for me too?”
McGarrett was quiet for a moment before he spoke softly, “I don’t know, but it’s worth a shot to find out, don’t you think? All you have to do is say the word, Alex, and I promise you I’m not gonna leave you alone. I’ll be there every step of the way.”
Alex tried to cut off the sob building in his chest but then decided he didn’t care anymore. He was exhausted and injured; that should give him a free pass to be as emotional as he wanted. As the tears started to fall, he felt a hand settle, heavy and reassuring, between his shoulder blades. Alex let himself have a minute before he pulled himself back together enough to give a shaky nod and a whispered, “please.”
“Consider it done.”
Alex took a shaky, deep breath, swiping a hand over his cheeks. “What -- uhm, what exactly does this mean?” He glanced up at the man.
McGarrett smiled down at him. “It means it’s time to burn some ships of our own.”
Lexxpocalypse Reveal 2: @lexosaveus
Dots was all alone in the Denny’s – Tali had reluctantly left, saying she had some kind of business to take care of, but Dots was pretty sure she was just finding somewhere to hide and cry about Kingdom Hearts 3 again.  Whatever the reason, the Denny’s at 3 am had ominous feel when no one was out fighting in the ring. The Denny’s wasn’t meant to be this quiet.  The only sounds were that of Dots’ footsteps on the dusty floorboards – Tali really needed to get the cleaning staff back in here.
But that wasn’t Dots’ main concern at the moment.  She’d been pacing for approximately seven hours now, running on only tea brewed from fresh mountain dew to sustain her.  She briefly contemplated using the Denny’s kitchen to whip something up, but she wasn’t in the mood for Shrek-themed cupcakes at the moment, and she was even less in the mood to break her concentration.
Concentration.  Right.  The Lexxes.  The imposters.  The –
The door flung open.  Dots jumped a foot in the air and hissed, yeeting her magnifying glass at the intruder.
“Ow!”  Anri (@heyheyitsstillgay) rubbed their head.  “Dots?  Is that you?  What the heck are you doing in here?”
“What are you doing here?”  Dots challenged in return.  “The Denny’s is closed!  The security system’s supposed to keep any other ghosts out–” She gasped dramatically.  “Unless you’re one of the Lexxes and you hacked the security system!”  She flew up, seizing Anri by the collar.  “Are you one of them?  ARE YOU??”
“Geez, Dots, chill.  I already had the memes ripped out of me last month, I don’t need to molt for another year at least.”  They shook themself free and dusted themself off.  “Besides, I’m not one of the Lexx blogs.  I just ran across Tali on her way out and she said someone might need to keep an eye on you.  In hindsight, I can see why.”
“What?  I didn’t need Tali to send someone to babysit me!  I’m the first employee she hired!  I can take care of myself, I– VORUS!”  She suddenly screeched, jumping a foot back from the window.  Anri glanced outside and burst out laughing.
“That’s just your reflection, hun,” Anri said, gently (so as not to startle her) placing a hand on Dots’ shoulder.  “Vorus isn’t here.”
“I… swear I… nevermind,” Dots murmured.  “Well, if you’re here, you might as well help with the investigation.  Do you have any intel for me?”
“I didn’t wear my best Sherlock meme shirt for nothing,” Anri said with a grin, gesturing to their shirt that read A MURDER, YAY over a demented screenshot of BBC’s Sherlock.  “I’ve got some info on Lexosaveus.  I saw them hanging around my lair in the Nightmare Valley.  Then around the same time, I saw sonicgrl01.”
Dots frowned.  “So you think Lexosavus is sonicgrl01?  Just because you saw them both in a similar place at a similar time?  ...Wait, actually, that’s brilliant!  The imposters can’t keep up the illusion forever, it makes sense that their disguise could crack.  Could you take me to check it out?”
“I would, but…” Anri frowned.  “You look exhausted.  If you fall asleep in the Nightmare Valley – well, it’ll be exactly what it sounds like.  A nightmare.”
“I can–” Dots yawned, “--handle it.  I promise I’ll sleep right after.  Just take me, please!”
Anri shrugged.  “Don’t say I didn’t warn you.”
XXX
The Nightmare Valley wasn’t so bad, Dots thought.  Lots of stars.  A very nice space aesthetic.  Rather peaceful, actually, if you asked her.  Why had Anri been so worried?
“So where did you see–”
“Shhh!”  Anri shushed her before whispering, “You have to be quiet in these parts.  You never know what ghosts you could attract here.”
“Fine, fine,” Dots humored her.  It was Anri’s home, they probably knew better than her in this case.  But flying on in silence was boring.  And… well, a little bit tiring, with nothing to break the monotony of pinprick stars floating by on all sides… like a thousand tiny nightlights… or… or the eyes of a thousand Lexxes…
“They’re watching me,” she muttered, eyes widening.  “They’re here… oh mothman, they’ve found me!  They’re everywhere!”
Two of the eyes glowed bright red and grew larger – flying towards her.
“Lexovorus!  I’m not – I’m not scared of you!”  Her voice cracked.  The eyes seemed to laugh; a toothy grin split between them.
“You should be.”
The cavernous jaw opened, and –
“Dots!  Dots, wake up!”
What?  What was–
Something whumped Dots upside the head, and everything went black.  When she opened her eyes again,  Anri’s fuzzy silhouette was staring down at her.
“What… what happened?”  Dots mumbled, rubbing her head.
“You fell asleep,” Anri deadpanned.  “Just like I warned you.”
“Oh…” Dots blushed a light purple, her namesake polka dots standing out even more.  “Sorry.”
“No, I’m sorry,” Anri surprisingly apologized.  “I shouldn’t have brought you here. But we’re almost to my lair.  You can rest there.”
Dots nodded, and they continued their flight.  Just before they could reach Anri’s lair though, another figure came into view.
“I didn’t fall asleep again, did I?”  Dots asked, recognizing the ghost as Lexosaveus.  Ironically, the Lexx hadn’t been there to save Dots when she’d needed it.
“Nope.  That’s our target.”  Anri grinned.  “Hey, Saveus!  We’ve got a crisis over here!  Help!”
“Huh?  Wait, but we’re not–”
“LEXOSAVEUS, TO THE RESCUE!”  Saveus intoned dramatically, puffing out their chest and flying over.  Their cape billowed out in the nonexistent wind. “WHAT IS YOUR AILMENT, MORTALS?”
“It’s Dots!  She’s nearly collapsed from fatigue!”  Anri played along, sucking up to the duplicate’s obvious obsession.  Dots caught on quickly, lying back in Anri’s arms and holding the back of her hand up to her forehead.
Saveus gasped.  “OH MY!  THAT LOOKS QUITE SERIOUS!  WHAT CAN BE DONE TO HELP?”
“There’s only one cure to this detective’s condition,” Anri said seriously.  “She needs… answers.”
“ANSWERS?  TWO PLUS TWO IS FOUR!  THE MITOCHONDRIA IS THE POWERHOUSE OF THE CELL!  THE MEANING OF LIFE IS–”
“No, no, a specific answer,” Anri clarified.  “She needs to know… who you are.”
“Me?”  Lexosaveus’s voice finally dropped to a reasonable decibel.  “I am… LEXOSAVEUS!  HERO OF THE GHOST ZONE AND…”
Anri fixed them with a harsh glare, one that held the power of the terrible memes and danno edits contained within their immortal form.  Lexosaveus, powerful as they might have been, was unable to withstand it.
“OH… OH… ALRIGHT!”  They exclaimed.  “MY NAME IS… @sonicgrl01!  THERE!  IS DOTS SAVED NOW??”
Dots cracked open her eyes.  “Oh, yes, Saveus.  I’m very saved.  Thank you so much.”
“YAY!  LEXOSAVUS IS ONCE AGAIN DOTS’ HERO!”
And with that, they flew off into the depths of the Nightmare Valley.
“Way to go, Dots.”  Anri grinned.
“Hey, that one was all you.  Thanks.”  Dots smiled back before yawning.  “Now, I think what would really save me is some sleep.”
Anri nodded.  “Definitely.  Come on, let’s get you some rest.”
princess (steve mcgarrett)
heyo babes! my first valentine’s day fic and it’s for five-0 heartthrob steve mcgarrett! i hope you guys like this! i enjoyed writing it and it’s a little fastpaced but it’s fun! as always, pls lmk what you think! <3 xoxo
w: innuendos, moments of self doubt (!!!gifs not mine!!!)
“Is it alright if I call you princess?” (@rpstartersforyou)
You’ve been working with Five-0 for nearly a year now and you and Commander McGarrett still don’t get along. You got off on the wrong foot, you disobeyed him (for the team’s well-being), and you constantly argued.
Now is another one of those times.
“What the hell were you thinking Y/LN? You could have gotten us all killed!” McGarrett’s got you locked up in his office and he’s giving you a very BIG piece of his mind. You sitting there silently isn’t helping his mood. “I asked you a question! Answer it before I suspend you.”
“Suspend me?” You look up at him, anger and betrayal painted in your features. “You’re going to suspend me for making the call that eventually saved all of our asses?”
“I’m going to suspend you for putting us all at risk, Y/N. Now tell me what the hell were you thinking?” He slams his hands on the desk and you stand up to be at least eye-to-chest level with him.
“I’m not going to apologize for my actions, Commander! I took a calculated risk. I knew what the outcome would be. The worst thing that would happen is I’d have a few scratch marks, case in point,” you point out the three stitches on your temple and the one small gash on your cheek. “If I hadn’t taken the risk, you would have died. Kono would be in surgery right now. Danny would’ve been taken hostage and Chin would have been a wreck. I wouldn’t let that happen.”
“What the hell are you talking about? What does all that mean?” He glares at you and you shake your head, laughing softly.
“I know I haven’t been a part of this team as long as the other’s have and I know you hate me, but I would never put any of you at risk. Me being hurt isn’t nearly as big an issue as the rest of you being hurt. I’ll be just fine,” you grab your things and make your way to the door.
“The fact of the matter is that one of us gets hurt. It doesn’t matter which one, Y/N,” Steve shakes his head at you and you give him a smile, leaning over to kiss his cheek.
“You’re all family. It matters,” you pat his arm and make your way out of his office, the reality of it all settling in. They’re a family you’re not a part of. You give the rest of your team a small smile and head on home.
You take the long way home, enjoying the scenery and reminding yourself of the good things on this damn island. By the time you make it home, you’re tired and worn out and you don’t notice the light on in your kitchen until it’s too late.
“It’s about time you made it home,” a voice calls out and pull your gun out, aiming it at the direction the voice came from. “It’s Steve, by the way. Put your gun down.”
“What the hell, McGarrett?” You lock the door and walk into the kitchen, brows furrowed. “What’s going on?”
“Well I feel bad for today. After you uh stormed out earlier, I-”
“Hold on, stormed out? Buddy, I kissed your cheek and walked out. And I said bye to everyone, so get your facts right boss,” you raise a brow at him and he holds his hands up in surrender.
“Fine, after you left,” he emphasizes the word eft and you roll your eyes at him. “After you left, I talked to the team. Chin reiterated what you said to me, said I shouldn’t have been so hard on you. They all said that I do, in fact, act like I hate you and I just want you to know that I don’t hate you. And I’m really sorry I gave you that impression.”
“Uh-huh,” you nod and walk into the kitchen, leaning against the countertop as Steve works on making food for you. “Whatcha making sailor?”
“Fettuccine Alfredo. I figure, you know. It’s Valentine’s day. You deserve something good to eat after all the apparent shit I put you through,” he shrugs and you look to the bottle of wine sitting by the sink.
“And you brought wine?” You smirk and walk over to grab the bottle. “If I didn’t know any better, I’d think Commander McGarrett wanted to get laid tonight.”
“C’mon go easy on me,” he shrugs, focusing on the meal, and you laugh. “I didn’t know what to do so I, yes, I broke into your place and decided to be nice for once. And hey, listen to me.”
“Listening, boss. Look this way,” you hold up your phone, taking a video of your boss in a floral apron as he glares at his creation. He looks up at you, shaking his head.
“Put the phone down!” He groans and you laugh, shaking your head. “If any of this gets back to Danno, I’m gonna kick both your asses.”
“Right, right. You love Danno and I think I’m growing on you, so,” you smile as McGarrett rolls his eyes, seeing as you won’t put the phone down.
“Oh so this is how it’s gonna go, huh?” He turns down the stove temps and pulls off his apron but it’s not until he looks at you that you know you’re in trouble. “Alright.”
“No!” You yell and run out of the kitchen, Steve already on your tail. You jump over couches, go under tables and Steve obviously catches you in five seconds flat.
“I did ask you nicely,” he whispers, now straddling your waist and holding your hands over your head.
“You did. I also refused, very nicely if I do say so myself,” you clearly don’t know when to shut up and this makes your boss smile.
“You did ask nicely but I don’t like being disobeyed,” he gives you a pointed look and you smirk.
“Tell me boss, when has that stopped me before?”
“It hasn’t,” he chuckles and you nod, smiling widely.
“Exactly. Now c’mon. Let’s go eat,” you shrug under his grip and he nods, standing up and pulling you up with him.
“I’m hungry for something else entirely now,” he whispers and you do your best to ignore the blush rising to your cheeks.
Tumblr media
“Really now? And what is that?” You stand in front of him, daring him to make a move.
“Some of Kamekona’s shrimp, actually,” he clears his throat and you laugh, throwing a nearby pillow at him.
“Screw you,” you walk back into the kitchen, leaving behind a laughing Steve.
“Come on, princess. You know I was joking,” he comes over to you and you raise a brow at the new nickname. “Oh, is it okay if I call you princess? Y’know, seeing as you don’t listen to anyone and just do what you want?”
“You can call me that if you give me something to talk about. And between me and you?” You grab him by the collar and pull him close, your lips brush against his as he awaits your response. “I’ll be talking a lot about how you managed to burn some pasta.”
Fruits
For @greyheartwriter for the Phic Phight!  Enjoy!
.
.
.
Thanks to the Fenton Faded Folio Fixer, the waterlogged, ripped, and slightly singed journal of Jack's favorite and most notorious ancestor was now readable. Or, at least, carefully scanned photographs of the pages could be read. Jack could hardly wait to read it. He and Maddie had stayed up until the small hours of the morning inputting pages.
If only they were young again, able to pull all-nighters... Alas, it was not to be.
Still, he was very high energy when he got up that morning. As usual. He bounced down the stairs in front of his wife, letting his enthusiasm out.
"Hey, Mads, what kind of cool historical ghost fighting techniques do you think we'll find in ol' John Fenton-Nightingale's journal? My grandpa told me that he once fought a demon ghost with his bare hands, can you imagine?"
He heard a choking sound from the kitchen, and bounded in to find his son, Danny, choking on his cereal. He gave Danny a hearty slap on the back, and Danny started gasping for air.
"You okay there, Danny boy?"
"I'm, yeah, I'm fine. I just- Late for school! Gotta go!"
Danny rushed out the door without any further explanation. Jack scratched his head. "Huh. Isn't it still pretty early?"
"It's Saturday," said Maddie, concerned. "Should we go get him?"
"Nah, he'll figure it out soon enough!" said Jack. "It's good to see him so eager to go! Speaking of eager, let's go see how good ol' John ripped ghosts apart in the good old days!"
.
"Blood blossoms are extinct, right?" Danny asked Sam, watching her water her plants in her greenhouse, hands on his knees. "I mean, definitely and absolutely?"
"As far as I could find out," said Sam. "I talked to all of my gardening contacts. Only one had ever even heard of them, and she was convinced it was just a weird rose. I mean, even from where I was tied, I could tell they weren't, so... What's this about, anyway? Did your parents find out about them?"
"No, but they're about to. They got the Nightingale journal legible."
"Dang. I thought you trashed it."
"I tried! I really tried! But then Dad got it in his head that ghosts were trying to destroy it because it held secret ghost fighting secrets-"
"I mean, true, but go on."
"-and they got really enthusiastic about it. They build a whole machine just to read it!"
Sam put down her watering can and patted Danny on the back. "Well, hopefully there isn't anything in there that's worse than blood blossoms."
Danny groaned. "Why would you say something like that?"
.
"... and they're great on sandwiches!" exclaimed Jack.
"They certainly sound amazing," said Maddie as she typed on the lab computer. "They would be an amazing asset, but I can't find anything about them online, or even anything that looks like them. Show me the picture again? Maybe I can run it by some people."
"Sure thing, Mads!" Jack handed Maddie the relevant page. "Do you know a place called the Spine?"
"Not off the top of my head, why?"
"Because John says that's where he hid a bunch of seeds, just in case those dastardly ghosts tried to destroy them!"
"He hid them in the spine?" repeated Maddie, looking up from the computer. "Are you sure?"
"That's what he said!"
"Jack, what if he meant... the spine of the book?"
Both of them rushed across the lab to where the journal was stored in a ghost-proof box. Maddie picked up a pair of scissors.
"I'm really sorry if I'm wrong, Jack," she said.
"Don't be! It's what John would have wanted!"
She flipped up the lid and took out the wrecked book. "Maybe that's why the ghosts were so insistent on trying to destroy this, now. They knew about the seeds."
"I wouldn't put it past 'em!"
Maddie picked apart what was left of the binding, and, sure enough, a little cloth bag was nestled alongside the folded backs of the pages. Carefully, Jack picked it up and untied the top. He grinned widely and showed the shriveled red-brown fruits inside to Maddie.
"They're here, Maddie! Wait 'til I tell the kids! They'll be so excited! A little piece of family history, right here, in our hands."
"Wait, Jack," said Maddie, grabbing his arm. "I don't think we should tell them."
Jack's face fell. "Why not?"
"Well," said Maddie, frowning, "you know how they are about ghosts. I think we should keep these secret. So the ghosts don't find out, like they did with the journal."
"You don't think Jazz or Danny told the ghosts about the journal, do you?"
Maddie shook her head. "No, not necessarily. But they could have told their friends, and the ghosts could have overheard. This is just really important to our work and your family history, and I'd hate for it to be destroyed because of a mistake like that."
"Alright, we'll keep it secret, then. At least until they're ready to use! We can use the Fenton Stockades! The kids never go down there."
.
"You haven't heard any more about the journal?" Danny asked Jazz a week later. He leaned nervously against her doorjamb. He'd been having flashback nightmares to the seventeenth century or whatever hell year John Fenton-Nightingale had been from.
"What journal?" asked Jazz. "I read several. Psychology Today?"
"What?" asked Danny wrinkling his nose. "Isn't that a magazine? No, Dad's ancestor's journal. The one he and Mom thought was full of old ghost fighting stuff."
"No," said Jazz. "Why? Is it full of old ghost fighting stuff?"
Danny shrugged. "I didn't look at it super closely before I tried to torch it, but, yeah."
"That was you? Why?" asked Jazz, looking up from her book and swinging her legs off her bed.
"Because the guy tried to kill Sam," said Danny, scowling.
"Th- Our ancestor, who lived in the sixteen hundreds tried to kill Sam?" asked Jazz. "Jeez, I don't hear about half the things you guys get up to, do I? Why would he try to kill Sam?"
"He thought she was a witch. Thought I was a demon, too."
"So the demon Dad was saying he wrestled..."
"Probably me, to be honest."
"Just so you know," said Jazz, "I am intensely disturbed."
"That's two of us. Just, keep your ears out for them talking about blood blossoms or anything like that, okay?"
"Sure thing, little bro. And blood blossoms are?"
"Incredibly painful to ghosts. Or to half-ghosts who happen to be in ghost form." Danny made a face, remembering. "I was in so much pain I couldn't even think about turning back."
"You want to talk about it?"
"No," said Danny. "Not really."
"Well, if you change your mind..."
"Thanks," said Danny.
.
"Heh- achoo!"
"Sounds like you've got some allergies there, Danno!" said Jack. "I used to get them when I was your age, too!"
"Yeah, yeah," grumbled Danny. When his allergies had failed to show up the year after he became half-ghost, he had thought he had seen the last of them, but apparently they had just been lying in wait, because now they were worse than ever. He resisted the urge to rub his eyes.
If he ever found out what plant was doing this to him, he was going to destroy it with extreme prejudice.
"We'll pick up some allergy medication next time we're at the store. Which kind did you like, again? Allegra? Claratin?"
"I don't care," said Danny. "Whichever."
"Well," said Maddie, putting a pot on the table, "maybe this will help you clear up your sinuses, at least for a little bit. I put lots of spices in it." She ladled rosy pink soup into first Danny's then Jazz's bowls.
"It's an old family recipe!" said Jack, proudly.
Danny was immediately suspicious. Sure, he was probably just being paranoid, but he couldn't help but remember that John Fenton-Nightingale had eaten blood blossoms. Danny doubted consuming something like that would be good for him, no matter what form he was in.
He made a show of sneezing very hard and knocked his soup off the table.
"Aw, man," he said, staring at the mess.
"Don't worry, Danny-boy! You can have some of mine!"
"No, no," said Danny. "I'm actually not feeling all that hungry... I think I'll just go to bed." He fled the dining room without waiting for a response
.
"Jack," said Maddie, "do you think Danny was acting strangely at dinner today?" She still wasn't used to how her voice echoed in the Fenton Stockades, even after all these years.
"Yeah. Man, he's got some brutal allergies, huh?"
Maddie pruned a branch off of one of the larger blood blossom bushes. "Did you see the way he was looking at the blood blossom soup?" she asked.
"Not really! I was too busy looking at mine, and, man, was it delicious or what?"
"Thanks, Jack," said Maddie, smiling briefly. Her thoughts turned back to Danny, and the smile fell. "The book said that the fruits were good against overshadowing, right?"
"Right-o, Mads!"
"How long until these start bearing, do you think?"
.
The answer to the question was two weeks. For two weeks, Maddie lived not knowing whether or not her son was a ghost. For two weeks, Danny lived in a state of steadily increasing anxiety and paranoia.
He could feel Maddie watching him. He could feel her doubt. Literally. It made him sick. Or was that just the allergies? Either way it was brutal and Danny found himself taking every excuse he could to get out of the house. He rarely ate at home. He couldn't trust the food.
Jazz didn't think it was healthy. Neither did Danny, but it wasn't his fault.
"Do you have any proof?" asked Jazz, exasperated.
"Proof of what?"
"That Mom's acting weird, or that she's trying to poison you."
"No," admitted Danny. "But that doesn't mean she isn't."
"You've lost ten pounds, Danny, and you were already a stick. People will think you're anorexic." She paused. "You're not actually anorexic, are you?"
"No!" said Danny. "That's stupid. I'd eat if I could trust anything. Which I can't."
"Please, Danny. At least eat a cookie. I watched Mom make them. She didn't put in anything weird. Except for raisins, I guess."
Danny glanced down at the plate on the table, mouth watering. They smelled so good, and he was so hungry.
"Okay," he said, "but you have to watch in case I die or something."
Jazz rolled her eyes. "Fine," she said.
Danny picked up a cookie and bit into it. "Are you sure these are raisins?" he asked, picking the bite back out of his mouth.
"They were in the raisin box," said Jazz.
"They taste kind of funny," said Danny. His pulse had picked up. Crud, was he having a panic attack? Over a cookie?
"I guess they were kind of old," admitted Jazz. She took a cookie herself. "They're not bad. Danny? Are you okay?"
Danny, leaning on the counter, shook his head. "Can't breathe," he wheezed.
"Oh my gosh, you're swelling up," said Jazz.
Danny's vision tunneled and went dark.
.
"... anything new in his daily life? His diet?"
The voice was unfamiliar to Danny.
"We got some new plants last month... We've been trying them in cooking."
"In the cookies?"
"The fruits, yes, they're an heirloom variety."
"Could you bring some in? I'd like to run a few tests, but my initial diagnosis is that Danny has a severe allergy to something he ate."
There was an annoying beeping sound.
"Of course." Oh, that was his Mom. She sounded worried. "When do you think he'll wake up?"
"Any time now. But there are some other things I'd like to talk to you about that we found. Would you mind stepping out with me for a moment? Alright, so..."
"You can stop pretending to be asleep," said Jazz.
Danny groaned. "I told you so."
"You did," agreed Jazz.
"What have they noticed?" asked Danny, opening his eyes to see a hospital room.
"Not much, don't worry. I think they just want to ask about your portal scar."
"Mhm," said Danny, rubbing his chest. "So..."
"Severe allergic reaction. They hit you with an epi-pen."
"Cool. That worked?"
"Apparently."
.
"Are you sure you got rid of all of it?" asked Danny, standing well clear of the front door.
"We're positive, honey," said Maddie.
"Yeah, Danno," said Jack. "We got it up with the Fenton Pollen-o-Matic! Just, let us make this up to you, okay, sport? We didn't mean for it to turn out like this."
"I know," said Danny. He squared his shoulders and walked inside.
.
Danny sat on his bed, cross-legged. He had to check this now, rather than later, even if the thought of what was probably going to happen made him cringe.
No, he had to think positively. After all, what were the odds that the universe hated him that much?
Pretty high.
Okay. Positive thoughts not working. Time to bite the bullet.
He pulled on his core, summoning his transformation rings. They appeared, bright and white around his waist. They started to separate, and-
He was hit with a wall of blinding pain. His rings snapped back together.
Typical, really.
He reached for his phone and dialed a number.
"Hey, Tucker. How long did it take for those blood blossoms to go through your system?"
Tumblr media
Danny kept rubbing his chest looking off toward the city where his children were. He asked for them to pull Grace out of class, “I just…I love you Monkey. I just needed you to know that…yeah…yeah I’m a little scared right now, but it’s going to be okay. No, no, of course everything is going to be fine…”
He jumped when he heard shouting from behind him. He braced for some sort of explosion. Some sort of incineration. But he just heard hollering from below inside the boat.
“Monkey I gotta go…I love you…and I have a surprise for you later, just come home so I can hold you and Charlie real tight for a while okay? Okay…yeah, no you have to go back to geometry…glad I could help for a bit…Danno, loves you…bye…” He turned walking toward the entrance you and Steve had gone in, “Uh…are we dead?”
He looked down seeing you and Steve hugging and laying on the floor, “No, Danny, we are not dead.”
Danny smiled bending down holding onto his knees, “This is good…this is real good. Shortie come up here so I can hug you for saving the day, cause I know it wasn’t your dad.”
“Hey!” Steve helped you sit up sounding offended.
“Babe, come on…there was no shooting, there was no explosion…it’s not your style…” Danny smirked reaching down grabbing your hands as your dad hoisted you up. He watched you grit your teeth as Steve pushed you up, “You alright kiddo?”
“Yeah…I’ll be fine…rough road.” You smiled giving him a tight hug, “Thanks Danno.”
“Aww, no I need to thank you. I’m not a shadow on the wall right now.” He smiled kissing your cheek and let you go to help Steve out.
“Looks like we missed the party!” You looked over the edge of the boat seeing Jack, Mac, and a bomb squad, “We thought we show the professionals over.”
“Good idea,” You smiled as squad started to board the boat.
Steve looked at Danny glancing over at you talking to the team leader explain what they would find down there, “See Danny, nothing to worry about.”
“Yeah…except that…” He pointed at Mac walking up to as the squad moved over to them.
Steve watched as the young man grabbed your hands concerned. The concern proceeded to a hand on the cheek looking down into your eyes with worry. It took Steve a moment before noticed his hand clenching. As he started to walk over with Danny he saw your knees finally give out. Mac caught you easily enough.
“Y/N!” Steve ran over catching up with Mac already on the move to the ambulance down the dock, “What’s wrong? What’s going on?”
Mac glanced at him before looking at your flushed unconscious form, “She’s hurt…she’s been pushing herself too much and no doubt hasn’t been taking her meds to help with the infection.”
“Infection?” Steve asked confused and worried.
“I’ll explain once we get the hospital…but she needs a doctor now.” Mac told him as paramedics came running over with a gurney. Mac started to climb into the ambulance, but stopped looking at Steve, “You should go…we’ll follow behind you.”
It took everything for him to not jump inside with you, but he shook his head, “No…you know what’s wrong, go.”
“You’re sure?” Mac looked surprised.
“Just go!” Steve snapped making him jump in quickly as Danny ran over to him.
“Steve, what’s going on?” Danny asked him as he followed to the Camaro.
“I don’t know.” Steve got inside starting the car before Danny had a chance to buckle, “But I don’t need to be here…call Lou have them finish up.”
Steve raced behind the ambulance all the way to the hospital, jumping out near the emergency entrance tossing Danny the keys as he walked past following Mac inside, “What’s the word?”
Mac took a deep breath in looking at him, “She’s gonna be fine, just dehydrated…and her burns are in bad shape again. I should’ve pushed her to go to the doctor sooner…she just…”
“Focused on the mission.” Steve wrapped his arms around himself looking at Mac, “It’s…a family trait. You wouldn’t have been able to do anything…”
Mac nodded standing in the hall watching you get pushed behind a door, “Still…”
Steve stood there with him staring at the door watching nurses and doctors mill about with patients for a moment, “There’s nothing we can do right now…let’s find a place to put everyone.”
“Mr. McGarrett…” Mac took a deep breath in as Steve turned to him holding up a hand stopping him.
“First, it’s Commander McGarrett.” Steve told him giving a stern stare, “Second, I don’t want to hear it right now. Right now, I just want to focus on my daughter’s recovery. Something that I wouldn’t be doing today without your help…so thank you for bringing her home to me. Let’s…just leave it there for right now.”
Mac nodded slowly, “Yes, sir.”
“Good…” Steve turned to the nurse’s station and found out where they could wait for you informing them that Danny would be in quickly and probably followed by several other visitors.
They both took a seat in the waiting room letting out exhausted sighs. Steve started undoing his tact vest feeling the release of tension that had been building. He pulled it off setting in the chair next to him looking over at Mac leaned over elbows on his knees hands clenched together, “So…what do you do exactly? I mean you were disarming a bomb in a moving car, but is that it?”
Mac looked at him smiling. Steve wanted to just smack him good, for many reasons. This kid seemed to be the perfect all-American specimen, “I-uh…do a little of everything really. I did serve though, disarming IEDs. It’s where I met Jack.”
“That’s not what I asked, but it’s good to know.” Steve’s leg started to jump up and down anxiously, “When you say everything, what do you mean?”
“I solve problems with unlikely items or situations…” Mac cleared his throat.
“Like bullets as a connection…” Steve looked at him crossing his arms.
“Yeah, and interference with a looping comm piece.” Mac smiled a little again as he nodded, “I just…know how things work and how they can be used differently.”
“You go to school?” Steve asked after a beat.
“For a bit, MIT…dropped out.” Mac watched Steve tilt his head a little, “Wanted to do something to help the world…disarming bombs…”
“Ah…” Steve nodded commending the kid in his head for at least dropping out for a decent reason and not something like boredom.
“Y/N, said you’re a Navy SEAL.” Mac leaned back finally in his seat.
“Yes sir.” Steve nodded, “Not in an official capacity anymore, but…once you’re in it, you’re in it for life.”
“She said you were real good at it…that you trained her a little.” Mac’s smile grew as he talked about you.
“I did…” Steve sighed looking at the floor, “MacGyver…can I ask you something?”
“That’s kind of what we’ve been doing…” Mac flinched a little at the glare Steve gave him, “…yes…please do.”
Steve felt his shoulders tense as he took in a deep breath, “You said she was burned…”
The question was implied, and Mac sighed leaning forward again, “From what I know, which isn’t much, she was caught in an explosion before being captured.”
“She didn’t tell you?” Steve frowned.
“She doesn’t talk about it…as far as I know she’s only talked to Mattie.” Mac looked away almost as if he was uncomfortable, “It was a long debrief…”
Steve ran a hand over his face then back over his neck as he leaned forward, “So you don’t know anything at all?”
Mac hung his head a little before looking at him again, “I know…that she has nightmares…and she doesn’t feel comfortable with herself anymore. Not that anyone would believe it, but I’ve seen enough PTS and PTSD soldiers to know some of the signs.”
“She hasn’t been diagnosed yet?” Steve looked shocked.
“There wasn’t time…rather she wouldn’t make the time. Mattie integrated her into our team so quickly I think she just latched on to us as an anchor. As something to avoid it all…not that I’m at all qualified to give my opinion.” Mac shrugged sadly, “Jack and I have been trying to get her to…feel…I guess… to emote something. I can get her there…not always in the way I want to…”
“Is that what you’re sorry for?” Steve watched him carefully.
“You heard that?” He watched the young man’s ears turn red and nodded, “Uh, yeah…things were said in the very terrifying car chase…”
“Terrifying?” Steve raised an eyebrow.
“Yeah…” Mac leaned back cringing as he thought about it.
“You’re going to kill us!” Mac shouted toward the from back, “This is a delicate piece of equipment, one wrong move and boom!”
You handed the phone to Jack as you darted around another car getting onto the highway, “We’re gonna be fine…”
“Uh yeah, she’s fine, she’s driving.” Jack stared at you as you switched the car to manual drive, “I told her I would, but she gave me a death glare that I’m certain with a little more emphasis would’ve done some damage.”
“This isn’t some desert road, we’re gonna be fine.” You glanced back into the mirror toward Mac and Riley.
Mac let out a frustrated noise as you shifted and jerked the car into another lane, “Seriously! Take your aggression out in a different manner that will only kill you and not us!”
“Whoa…Mac…” Riley looked at him surprised.
“Excuse me?” You looked up at him in the mirror catching him run a hand through his hair before his eyes met yours, “Well fine…I’ll just do that next time I see a bridge when I’m alone.”
“Hey hey hey!” Jack shook his head pointing at you.
“Y/N I didn’t mean…this just really…” Mac was trying to keep his frustration down.
“Listen Mac!” You shouted back at him tears pricking your eyes, “You deal with the bomb! I’ll get us to the air field!”
“I didn’t mean it like that at all…” Mac shook his head frowning.
“It was a heated situation…” Steve licked his lips, “Things get said, and if you’re not trained to keep emotions in check…you don’t.”
“I am most definitely not trained…” Mac sighed looking at him, “Something Mattie tells me constantly…but I think it’s what makes me so good at my job…sometimes…”
“Hey, Steve…” He looked over seeing Danny rushing into the room, “How is she? Is she okay? Is she alright?”
Steve stood up shaking his head, “They haven’t come back yet.”
“She should be alright…” Mac stood as he started to speak.
“You…” Danny pointed to him as his eyes narrowed, “do not speak…I see the way you’ve eyed my girl…”
“Your girl?” Mac looked at him confused.
“Yeah, my kid…my Shortie!” Danny raised his voice, “I will not have it…she’s still…”
“Danny…” Steve half shut his eyes shaking his head a little.
“I…no…too much?” Danny reigned it in quickly, “You said on the way over we should be hard on him…I just…”
“We’re…okay.” Steve coughed looking away from as he put his hands on his hips.
“Right…” Danny nodded understanding looking over to Mac, “Still…let the doctors work…you’re not a doctor too, are you?”
“No, sir…I am not…” Mac shook his head smiling a little, “I’m gonna get some coffee…you two need anything?”
“No we’re good.” Steve answered as he walked out.
Danny waited until he was out of the room, “So…we’re okay?”
“No.” Steve shook his head, “But…he’s…not…Sang Min…”
“It doesn’t take much to not be Sang Min…” Danny cringed a little thinking about their CI friend…thing.
“Uh, excuse me…” A short dark haired man walked into the room, “Steve McGarrett?”
“Yeah…that’s me.” Steve stepped forward reaching for the man’s out stretched hand.
“Dr. Kekoa.” The man smiled a little, “I just wanted to come and tell you that your daughter is going to be fine. She’s very dehydrated and seems to be running on fumes. I’ve begun treatment on the infected areas of her skin. It will take some time and bed rest, but she’ll make it as long as she takes the antibiotics.”
“Thank you.” Steve swallowed nodding a little.
“She’s actually asking for you, if you’d like to go see her. But I have to warn you…it’s not a pretty sight.” Dr. Kekoa told him.
“Yeah…uh…” Steve looked to Danny who simply nodded for him to go on.
Dr. Kekoa led him through the doors into the ER, “Do you know the extent of your daughter’s injuries?”
“I know she was overseas…I thought she wad dead.” Steve told him.
“Oh…I am so sorry…” Dr. Kekoa looked at him surprised, “Then I will let you know that she suffered some sort of trauma consistent with something that you’d see from an explosion. Specifically an IED…it looks like shrapnel was pulled from her at some point…poorly.”
“H-how bad is the burn?” Steve asked him worry setting in.
“Mostly second degree, but there are a few areas that are third degree. I would assume those areas were more exposed then the rest when the incident happened. Right now, we are peeling off the infected areas and putting wraps on her. She’ll need to stay here for observation for a few days.” Dr. Kekoa told him as he stood outside a room. He picked up a pack of scrubs, “And you’ll need to wear this…changing room is across the hall. Enter when you’re ready.”
Steve stood there a second before turning to get changed quickly. When he came back out he walked straight to the door stopping immediately at what he saw. You were laying on a bed pillow twisted around arm. Your back was to him showing the burn that seemed to mainly be on the right side of your torso and part of your upper leg.
Finally, he stepped threw walking over slowly. He heard a small whimper come from you as the nurse continued to clean the wounds. The nurse looked over to him as he approached, “Oh good…maybe you can talk some sense into her. You’re the dad, right?”
“I’m sorry?” He looked at her confused.
“Dad…” His attention immediate went to you reaching out for him. He took your hand looking at your face seeing tears stream down your cheeks. You squeezed his hand tightly.
“What’s going on?” Steve looked up at the nurse.
“She’s refusing any type of pain medication.” The nurse told him.
“Baby…” Steve shook his head, “Don’t do this to yourself…”
“No.” You started to shake your head closing your eyes, “No…I won’t…I can’t…”
He could hear the fear in your voice, “Y/N, this-this isn’t good…you need to let your body heal. This is causing more stress.”
“No…” Your voice cracked as you opened your eyes tears trickling down to the pillow, “I can’t go back there…I can’t…”
You were begging him. The terror in your eyes made everything in him cry out in agony. He already knew it was going to be bad, but this just…He nodded giving your hand a squeeze as he leaned over your head shielding you from the world, “Okay…It’s okay…We’re here…we’re home…”
He stayed with you the rest of the procedure. Toward the end of it your body just ended up giving up. He refused to leave your side after the nurse left. He sat next to you holding your hand tightly.
He looked up as Danny walked wearing a surgical gown, “Hey…”
Steve nodded to him, “I can’t…leave her…”
“No one expects you to.” Danny told him with a sad smile, “I just wanted to stop in and tell you that I need to head out, but to call if you need anything…or if anything changes. Team Phoenix is waiting to come in too.”
“Thanks Danny…will you…uh…” Steve teared up a little looking at you rest, the bloody bandages still catching him off guard.
Danny touched his shoulder in understand, “I got it…don’t worry.”
Steve nodded watching him leave before he pulled you hand to his mouth kissing it several times, “What did they do to you Shortie?”
Part One
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It had been completely silent since you’ve gotten in the car. Danny was simply radiating anger and frustration. At this moment, you thought it best to give him at least a few minutes, to cool off. It wasn’t hard considering the island was just filled with beauty, besides the gorgeous man driving one of your best friend’s car, “Danno,” you said in your sweet voice.
You knew your voice had a way of calming Danny down, “Yes, Y/N?”
His voice immediately softened, looking back at you with this face of care, “If this is your car, why is Steve driving it?”
Clearly you couldn’t wait very long to tease him more. The smile dropped from his face and turned into a frown as soon as Steve snorted, “Because this animal has control issues,” he slapped Steve’s arm.
“Control issues,” Steve questioned, “Why do you have to make up such lies in front of a lady?”
“What,” Danny turned to Steve, his face getting red, and voice rising, “First, she is no lady, she could out man any male. And second, lies – if I’m not lying, then why do you always have to drive my car? How do you explain that?”
Steve’s hands left the steering wheel, “Is it wrong for me to spoil a friend, I’m chauffeuring you around. I want you to feel special.”
“Well, that’s just hogwash,” Danny said to Steve, “Keep your hands on the wheel, you idiot.”
You slapped Danny’s arm, “Hey, you apologize to your partner.  Say two nice things!”
Shaking his head, tapping his hand on the dash, “Not that, Y/N, I’m not doing that, I’m not a child.”
“Daniel Williams,” you say with a stern, slow voice, “Say two nice things. Now.”
He looked back at you, while Steve watched in amazement at this phenomenon. Rolling his eyes, “Fine,” he did this long stare at Steve. He took a deep breathe and waited a moment to think of something nice. You kicked his chair, “Steve, you’re very kind for not trying to get me killed daily, though sometimes you don’t try hard enough. And you aren’t terrible to my kids.”
“Wow, Danny, that’s awfully nice of you,” Steve looked at him, “Had to dig real deep for those,” he mocked him. He looked back at you, “Two nice things, huh?”
You shrug, “Yeah, words are can be harmful, Danno knows that.”
He nodded his head, laughing a little. Danny just shook his head, trying to calm himself down again.
Pulling up to Steve’s, you bounded out before Danny could move out of the way, his chest smashing to the dash as the seat moved up, “No, Y/N, please you first.”
You spun, kissing him on the cheek, “Love you Danno,” you squeeze him, as he tries to get out of the vehicle, “Thanks for letting me stay with you.”
Steve steps out and watches over Danny’s car. He was in total amazement of your effect on Danny Williams. As soon as you hugged him, Danny’s disposition changed completely. The banter, the teasing, it didn’t matter. Danny Williams turned into complete mush, “Doll, you know I love having you,” he pulled you back to look at you, “Now, come on, this guy over here promised us some barbecue and beer.”
You got to meet everyone associated with the task force you’ve heard so much about. And everyone was so welcoming, it was like nothing you ever felt – instant family. The William’s knew your mother, which is why Matthew and you were close, you played together as children. Over time, they grew to be your only family. Here it was quick, you patted Kono on the arm, “I’m going to grab another beer,” she nodded at you.
You made your way closer to the house, reaching for the cooler. Steve beat you to it, “For you,” he passed it to you.
“Thanks commander,” you grabbed the beer.
“Steve, please,” he waved you off, walking around the cooler to lean against a tree. He was staring down at you smirking, “How’d you convince Danny it was safe to leave you here? He left muttering threats to me.”
You laugh, “It was a combination of the kids pleading to see me and the protection of Eric,” you wave to his nephew in the distance, who was staring at you like you were food, “Lucky for Eric, Danno doesn’t know Eric has had the biggest crush on me for years.”
“I’m not surprised, a beautiful, funny, intelligent woman like yourself,” he watched your reaction as he said this, “Poor boy didn’t stand a chance against your charm.” Blush creeps all over your face and you grow quiet, laughing nervously and looking towards the group of people, “Look at this,” he stood straight to look at you, “This whole flirty thing, it’s a rouse just to get under Danno’s skin,” he chuckled, “I’m shocked.”
“What, I’m a shy kid from Jersey,” looking down at the sand, “Said no one ever,” you laugh again. “If I’m being honest, I don’t really have experience with flirting for my own benefit. Danny let me have one boyfriend for about three weeks. Other than that, flirting is just another way to bother my protective big brother.”
Laughing at the statement, Steve nods, “Your relationship with Danny is not like one I’ve ever seen. Not even with his own sisters or Gracie does he turn into this mushy guy. You have that man wrapped around your finger.”
 You shrug, sipping your beer, “I don’t really have family, so he takes pity on me.”
“I think it’s more than that,” he comments.
“Puh-lease, Danno Williams does not have a crush on me. That’d be weird,” you shake your head, “Hell is more likely to freeze over with flying pigs flapping around.” You sigh, scratching the back of your neck, “After my mom disappeared, I didn’t have anyone, but the Williams’. Matty saw me as a convenience, someone no matter what he said or did would be there for him, again and again. My kindness and naivety were often taken advantage of with Danny’s little brother. And now, I have no one but him, he sees that.”
“Is that, that psychology degree of yours,” he grinned down at you. He admired how you could talk about your past with such lightheartedness and with barely knowing him. It meant you felt at home.
“Yes, sir,” you smile. Something grabs your attention from the door, you know Danny is here with the kids closing in on you. You wink at McGarrett, “No, it’s amazing. It’s called the pray mantis because the girl has to bend her leg,” Steve’s eyebrows shot up, instantly intrigued and amused.
]“Hey-o,” Danny yelled, covering his daughter’s ears, “Y/N, the mouth around the children.”
He tried to drag Gracie away, “Danno, Auntie Y/N,” she whined trying to get back to you.
“No, Auntie Y/N needs a timeout,” Danny looked back at you.
Steve raised his hand, “You know partner, I’m happy to-,” he started to smile with a shit eating grin.
“Don’t,” Danny yelled back, “Steve,” he growled, his voice lowering, “Don’t finish that sentence, if you care about your life.”
You laugh with Steve at the very red Danny, “That’s alright Danno, I have a long time to catch up with Auntie Y/N.”
“Excuse me,” he looked down at his daughter, “What do you mean?”
“She just got a job at the University of Hawaii,” both Danny and Steve shot you an expression.
Chugging your beer, “Gosh, the sun is setting. Gracie, let’s get Charlie and watch it, huh,” you grip her shoulder, steering her in the direction of the water, “Girl you outed me to your dad,” Gracie whispered a sorry before you both quickly ran away.
Danny just watched in amazement, “I’m not sure what to feel, happy or ambushed?”
“I know what I feel,” Steve looked at his partner, he was going to love using this to tease his partner more, “I think I’m in-.”
Pointing up at his partner, “Don’t say another word, you, overgrown cartoon character.”
Eric strolled up, putting his arm around Danny, “What a beauty,” he said looking at you. Danny tossed his arm down, “McGarrett, you are one lucky son of a gun. That sexual tension between you and Y/N, I mean,” he whistled, “If I was you,” he tried to continue, “I’d-.”
Danny growled loudly, tossing his hands in the air, “She’ll be the death of me,” he stomped inside.
You looked back, smiling at Steve. He realized he had to go cool off his partner, reason with him about his ‘little sister’ playing games on him, and why Danny should be happy to have her on the island. He stopped after taking a step in the direction of Danny, “She paid you to say that,” he asked Eric, “Didn’t she?”
“Twenty bucks,” he smiled at Steve, “For her though, I would have done it for free,” he smiled, glancing at his pacing uncle.
               Again, Steve looked back at you playing with Danny’s kids and Jerry joining the gang in the sand. He had a feeling you would be a good thing for this island.
Fic: You changed my world
Summary: Danny doesn’t like how the people at the bar are looking at Steve.
Author note: Hi guys!!! This fic was written for my beautiful angel @themcinebcnd, because she’s amazing and her birthday was two days ago :D I would also like you to know that English is not my native language, so all mistakes are mine and if you have any advise or criticism for me please let me know! Oh, and if you would like to see jealous!Danny on the actual show go watch season 1 episode 9 – it’s amazing!!
**
Sometimes after the team had solved an unusually hard case, they liked to go out for a drink or two to celebrate. That had never been a problem before, because to Danny they were like a family and he enjoyed spending some time with them outside of work. This time something felt different, though.
Kono was telling them a story that Adam had told her, and Steve and Chin were both laughing but Danny was too distracted to pay attention to what she was saying. The reason for that was simple – there was a blonde girl sitting at the bar, the same one that had tried to get Steve’s attention a few times this evening. She was currently eyefucking Steve from afar, even though he had already turned her down twice, and Danny couldn’t help but glare at her.
“Hey, Danny?” Kono asked, looking at him with concern in her eyes. “You’ve been spacing out a lot tonight. Is everything okay?”
“What?” Danny asked, looking at Kono again. “Oh, yeah - yeah. Sorry, everything is fine.” But it was too late. Steve turned to look at what Danny could have seen, and then back at him. He had this look on his face, like he had just figured something out. Shit.
Steve didn’t end up saying anything about what just happened, so the evening went mostly well after that. The four of them enjoyed some free time together, laughing and telling each other stories, but Danny couldn’t get this out of his head.
**
The next time it happened, it didn’t go as smoothly.
Danny had realized that Steve got hit on pretty much everywhere they went, and the part of him that had a huge crush on Steve wasn’t having any of it. He realized that it wasn’t ideal, or professional, but it was how he felt and he couldn’t do much about it.
The thing that got to him the most, Danny thought, was the fact that Steve looked and acted so differently when he wasn’t working. At work he was always so focused on every single case, doing whatever was necessary to keep everyone safe, that he sometimes didn’t look completely human. It was almost like he had switches in his brain that he could flip, probably something he had learned during his training in the navy and couldn’t let go of.
But right now he looked so soft, laughing and smiling with everyone else, that Danny couldn’t help but look at him fondly. So when he realized that the guy who was currently trying to buy Steve drinks was running his hands down Steve’s back, it suddenly all became too much.
Danny put down his own drink on some random table, leaving Kono and Chin alone and very confused. He hurriedly made his way towards the bar and to the other side of Steve to get his attention, wanting to drag him to somewhere quiet so they could talk.
**
“- the hell is going on with you? You’ve been acting weird all night, and now you’re taking me to the bathroom of all places - “
Steve was talking, but apparently Danny didn’t care. He didn’t look very happy either, with his arms crossed in front of his chest. “Is there something I should know about this guy you were so obviously flirting with at the bar?”
“… what?” Steve couldn’t believe what he was hearing, and he was so confused that he didn’t even have a proper answer for any of this.
“That guy at the bar, Steve. The one who’s been buying you drinks and stroking your back all night?”
“I’m - what about him? I mean, yeah, we flirted a little bit, but I don’t - “
“Yeah, well, I don’t like him.”
“What do you mean you don’t like him?! And why should that matter to me anyway? I’m old enough to make my own decisions about these things, you know.”
“Oh, okay. So what, you two are getting married now or…?” Danny asked, his clearly disapproving glare making Steve very uncomfortable. He opened his mouth to ask Danny again what the hell was going on, but then it finally hit him.
“Oh my god, you’re jealous!”
“What?! No, of course not! That- that’s stupid, why would I be jealous?”
“I don’t know, but you are. You so are!” Steve answered, his smirk only getting bigger.
“This isn’t about me, okay? You just-“ Danny was blushing now, and he didn’t dare to look at Steve. He muttered something under his breath and turned to walk through the door, but Steve grabbed his arm and stopped him – looking serious now.
“Hey, Danno. What is this really all about?”
Danny sighed, looking up from the floor and trying to decide what to do. Maybe he should just tell Steve, then at least he would know he had no chance. It would hurt, but it would get better eventually. He took a deep breath, and suddenly it all came out at once.
“Okay, this seems so stupid when I say it out loud because you obviously don’t feel the same but something about you has changed for me, and for whatever reason I have actually started to really like you, even more than just friends you know, and it’s hard because I don’t know what to do about it when you get so much attention from everyone else -“
Steve was smiling now, his grin only getting bigger the longer Danny went on, and he slowly moved closer to where Danny was standing.
“ – and I know you don’t feel the same way so I shouldn’t even be saying this, but I really have feelings for you and for some reason tonight really got to me and I’m sorry, I never should have said anything and-“
“Danny, look at me.”
Danny stopped rambling to finally look up at Steve, afraid of what he might find there after what he had just said, but he found nothing but a soft smile and bright eyes. Then Steve was talking again.
“You are wrong, okay? You’re so wrong, and I can’t believe it took us both so long to figure this out but I really have feelings for you too. Danny, I – you have changed my world so much. I completely fell for you when I first saw you, but I just… I didn’t want to say anything, because I was afraid that it would ruin things.”
It didn’t happen often, but Danny was absolutely speechless. They had now moved even closer to each other, so their lips were almost touching.
It was Steve that closed the gap between them, and then they were finally kissing.
When they eventually pulled away they were both panting, breathless from the intensity of the moment. Steve moved his hand so it held the side of Danny’s face, brushing his thumb softly over the cheekbone. “You believe me, right?”
Danny leaned into the touch, smiling softly and looking up at him. “I honestly have no idea why, but yeah. Yeah, I really do.” Then they were kissing again, both smiling into it, and for the first time in a while everything felt right again.
