Damned Spot
TW: Canon typical descriptions of violence (guns, hand-to-hand combat, McGarrett being McGarrett)
You feel a gentle nudge at your side and you groan softly in protest, nestling deeper into the pillow and the comforting smell of the cologne you bought your fiancé for Valentine’s Day a few weeks ago. Another nudge sends your body shifting again, the pressure more insistent this time, and you open your bleary eyes to find Steve sitting upright in bed, a finger pressed to his lips. You can feel the tension rolling off him in waves causing a bolt of fear to run down your spine and effectively breaking the sandman’s grip on you. You mouth, What is it?, and he holds up one finger in lieu of a response, listening intently. Then he asks, “Did you leave a window open downstairs?”
“No,” you whisper, “never. Growing up with cats made me paranoid.”
Steve eases his legs over the side of the bed, carefully opening the drawer of his bedside table and retrieving his gun and clip. Reaching for his arm as he slides the magazine into place with a faint click, you murmur, “Baby, what’s going on?”
“I think someone’s trying to get into the house.”
He checks his phone, frowns, and replaces it on the nightstand. “No signal,” he reports, looking hopefully at you when you raise the landline to your ear. You shake your head. He stalks over to the bedroom door, then stops with his hand on the knob at the sound of fabric rustling from behind him. Turning to find you tugging on one of his Navy t-shirts, he furrows his brow and hisses, “What the hell do you think you’re doing? You’re staying here.”
“Fat fucking chance,” you argue quietly, racking a bullet in the chamber of your own piece while joining him at the door. “You don’t take me to the range so I can sit up here worrying while you play Super SEAL. Let’s go.”
He puffs out a breath of air, jaw ticking as he considers his options. After a moment, he relents, “Stay on me, and stick to the shadows. If I say run, you run, got it?” You swallow thickly and nod, his eyes softening at the determination and fear swimming in your own. “You remember what I taught you?”
“Keep my finger off the trigger unless I intend to shoot.”
“And if you do?”
“Aim for center mass.”
He tucks you into his body and presses his lips to your forehead, murmuring, “That’s my girl.” Steve quietly opens the bedroom door and steps out onto the landing. With his dominant hand on his weapon, he reaches behind with his free hand and laces his fingers through yours, tugging you closer until your chest presses against his back. Feeling your pulse thrumming beneath his fingertips, he gives your hand a firm squeeze before lifting it to his shoulder. After a quick sweep of the living room from upstairs, he looks at you over his shoulder and whispers, “On me,” then begins your careful descent. Glass shatters somewhere in the kitchen, and Steve can feel your entire body tense as you muffle a gasp against his bare back. He turns at the bottom of the steps, guiding you into the corner there and shielding your smaller form from the wide open space of the living room, then raises his gun in the dark. Pressed so tightly into him, you feel rather than hear his authoritative voice carry through your home. “This is Commander McGarrett of Five-0,” he announces. “Put down any weapons you have, and come out with your hands raised.”
The house goes dead silent, or maybe it’s just impossible to hear over the sound of your blood rushing in your ears. God, you think to yourself, how does he do this every day? The seconds tick by, and the tension hanging in the air is downright oppressive.
Then, an object goes clattering across the floor and all hell breaks loose.
“Get down!” Steve roars, spinning and crushing you into his body moments before the backs of your eyelids go stark white from the flash bang. You force your eyes open as the light dissipates, readjusting to the dark once again enveloping you as time slows to a crawl and the world spins around you. You feel Steve’s palm tapping insistently against your cheek, and you realize he’s been calling your name, trying to get your attention. “Y/N, Y/N, look at me,” he pleads, and you hear a distinct edge to his voice that you’ve never heard before. He’s scared, you realize with a start, bile rising in your throat at the prospect of this man, the very definition of bravery, being scared about what you’re facing. The scene unfolding before you hurtles back to normal speed, and you spot movement on the second floor by your bedroom. Acting on instinct, your index finger shifts onto the trigger and you squeeze twice in rapid succession, gulping in air and staring in disbelief at the body that tumbles down the stairs to lay at your feet.
Your eyes dart back and forth between the landing and the living room where you can hear Steve exchanging blows with one of the intruders. He lets out a guttural roar, and you can just make out his form ramming a figure clad in black against the far wall. Then there’s a sharp crack followed by the sound of deadweight hitting the floor.
“Baby,” Steve says urgently, wrenching the semi-automatic from the dead man’s grip before returning to your side, his hand a comforting pressure on your shoulder. “Get to the basement. They’re going to send a second wave-”
His intuition proves right, the front door breaking off its hinges from a powerful kick and more glass shattering before you hear the thundering of boots across the hall upstairs. “Go! Go now!” Pressing your body to the wall that supports the staircase, you make it as far as the kitchen before the clouds part and the crescent moon illuminates another three men running towards you from the beach, weapons trained on your beloved home. The acrid smell of smoke fills the air as Steve fires a series of shots, trying to fend off the intruders so you can reach the basement for a semblance of tactical advantage, the relatively small room devoid of windows and featuring only a single entrance and exit.
You move into the kitchen, glass cutting into the soles of your feet that you barely even register thanks to the adrenaline coursing through your body, and reach for the handle to the basement door. “I can’t feel it,” you cry, panic flooding your voice while you paw at the wood. “Steve, I can’t find the handle!”
He realizes then, with a rising sense of dread, that he didn’t hear a window squeaking on its hinge. They didn’t need a window to breach the house. It was a fucking drill.
“Okay,” he nods, resigned. “Okay. How many bullets do you have left?”
“Four,” you answer shakily, swiping at your eyes to clear your vision.
He pops off an expertly placed shot, and you flinch when the man’s head jerks back before he crumples to the sand outside. “I’m sure our neighbors have called HPD by now,” Steve says confidently, trying to imbue his strength into you despite the myriad of scenes playing out in his head of how this could all go horribly wrong. “Tell me again what you’re gonna aim for,” he coaches.
“Center mass,” you answer dutifully.
Steve rumbles out, “You’re doing so well, Y/N. You keep your eye on that hallway, okay?” You hear the crunching of glass beneath heavy footfalls, and you take a deep breath in a feeble attempt to steel your nerves. Then shots ring out across the kitchen, the sparks of bullets affording you snapshots of the chaos, accompanied by the soundtrack of blows landing and bones cracking.
As quickly as it started, it’s all over. The longest six minutes of your life. Just about the length of Bohemian Rhapsody.
The thought has a laugh bubbling out of you, and Steve turns at the sound to check on you, the air rushing out of his lungs.
“Baby?” He drops to his knees, cradling your head in his lap and pressing his hand against your chest.
“Hurts,” you gasp out, trying to pull away from the unwelcome pressure.
“I know, my love,” he soothes you, “just breathe through it, okay? C’mon, breathe with me.” Following his lead, you take deliberate breaths, each gulp of air sending a shockwave of pain radiating through your body.
“This sucks,” you laugh again, almost delirious now. “I just picked out my wedding dress.”
“And you’re gonna look so beautiful in it,” Steve croons, pressing his hand even harder against the bullet wound in response to your rapidly worsening pallor. “Keep breathing, baby.”
You take in an obedient breath, and he blinks away tears, joking, “You wanted us to have another thing in common, huh? Matching his and hers scars?” You smile lovingly at him before gasping from the pain, and he continues rambling to keep you conscious, “It’s a through and through, Y/N, you’re gonna be fine.”
“Jus’ a through ’n through,” you slur back.
“Stay awake, Y/N,” he says roughly, jostling his knees beneath your head. The sound of approaching sirens grows louder with each passing second, and you try to memorize Steve’s handsome visage, his features drawn together tightly in concern.
You muse, “So pretty,” as his face comes in and out of focus, and you let out a content hum before closing your eyes, the sound of Steve’s panicked voice blending into the wailing sirens, and then nothing at all.
__________
“Hey, babe,” Danny calls as he walks briskly through the hospital just after three in the morning, lowering his voice when he receives a disgruntled look from one of the few other people in the lobby. “HPD said you were on your way to Tripler.” Seeing Steve decked out in an EMT’s jacket, he quips, “What happened? You ride in the ambulance so much they gave you a souvenir, huh?” Steve turns at the sound of Danny’s voice, his disheveled appearance and red-rimmed eyes a stark contrast to his usual sarcasm and self-assurance. “Woah, hey,” the blonde’s voice drops to a soothing murmur, and he pulls his best friend into a tight hug. “What’s going on?”
“It’s um-” Steve sniffs and smooths a hand over his face, steeling himself. “A tactical team broke into the house-” His voice breaks and he clears his throat, his hand balling into a fist that he repeatedly hits against his open palm before blurting out, “She got shot, Danny.”
The blonde is dumbstruck, unsure of how to ask his followup question and grateful when his partner intuits his fear. “She’s in surgery,” Steve supplies, and Danny releases a ragged breath that he hadn’t realized he’d been holding.
“How much longer?”
Steve merely shrugs in response, glassy-eyed stare trained on the floor in front of him. He pulls his hands out of the jacket pockets and studies them for a moment before concluding, “She lost a lot of blood.”
“Let’s go get you cleaned up, babe.” Danny guides his friend down the hall toward the nearest restroom. “I’m gonna call the team and let them know what’s going on. And I’ll have Chin bring you a change of clothes. Should I… call Y/N’s parents?”
“Not yet,” Steve intones, letting the rest of his thought go unspoken, then pushes open the door to the bathroom.
He stands in front of the sink for a few moments in a trance, unsure of what to do next until he glances down at his hands again, unrecognizable in their current state. He runs his palms under scalding hot water and scrubs at them ferociously, willing the liquid in the basin to stop running red. After several minutes, crimson has dulled to a blush tinge- the same color as your cheeks when he makes you laugh and the flowers you chose for the table settings at the wedding. He moves to swipe at his pooling tears but can’t bring himself to touch his face. Instead, he pulls out several paper towels, wets them, and dabs at his stinging eyes.
The cool water brings him marginally back to reality, although he’s not sure that’s a good thing given the state of his world right now. Suddenly feeling hot all over, and definitely too hot for this stupid jacket, Steve yanks at the zipper and peels off the heavy fabric. It takes him a few tugs to get the material detached from his bare skin, and when he looks up into the mirror again, he sees why.
On the other side of the door, Danny’s filling Chin in on the vague details he has of the night. “…won’t even say her name. No, I know, but he just keeps saying ‘she’ like Y/N’s a victim in one of our cases and it’s honestly freaking me-” Danny gets cut off by a gut-wrenching howl followed by the unmistakable sound of glass breaking. “I have to go,” he mutters into the phone. “Yeah. Yeah, I’ll see you when you get here. Thanks.” He allows himself a moment to breathe and prepare himself for what he’s about to see, then enters the bathroom.
He finds Steve gripping the sink so tightly that fresh blood oozes from the wounds on his knuckles with each flex of his fingers, his breath coming in ragged gasps as he stares blankly ahead into the broken mirror. “Steve-”
“Look at me,” his best friend rasps out, turning so that Danny can see his bare chest, a horrifying canvas painted with your blood. He opens and closes his mouth several times, clearly at a loss for words as he looks down at his hands in disbelief. “Her blood is literally on my hands, Danny. I was- I was supposed to protect her. My baby,” he whispers sadly, and then the dam breaks.
__________
As night creeps into morning, Steve sits in the waiting room with his team members poring over recent case files. He scratches at his chest for the umpteenth time, unable to escape from the hellish feeling of your blood on his body even after a hot shower in the nurses’ locker room and a change of clothes courtesy of Chin. “This is taking too long,” he sighs, slapping a file closed on the table before him and digging the heels of his palms into his raw eyes.
“Steve,” Kono starts gently, rubbing his arm, “why don’t you get some rest? We’ll keep going and wake you up if-”
“No,” he shakes his head, his voice rough with exhaustion and barely concealed rage. “I’m not going to sleep until I hunt down this son of a bitch and take away everyone he loves.” After a breath, he nudges Danny’s foot under the table and asks, “What’s Duke saying?”
“No hits through facial rec or even Interpol. It’s like these guys are ghosts.”
Chin sits up in his stiff hospital chair like an epiphany’s just struck. “What if this isn’t about Five-0?”
“Y/N’s a high school teacher,” Danny says, his eyebrows knitting together in confusion. “Her biggest enemy is Mrs. Heifer down the hall who never replenishes the K-cups.”
Despite the gravity of the situation, Steve smiles at his best friend and corrects, “Mrs. Hannifer.”
“I said what I said.”
“C’mon, you two,” Kono grins, squeezing their hands on the table. “Chin, what are you thinking?”
“When’s the last time you heard from Doris?”
Steve snorts out an incredulous laugh and answers, “When she got on that private jet a few years ago. She’s never met Y/N. Hell, she doesn’t even know she’s a grandmother now.” He shakes his head at that realization, gnawing at his bottom lip as he considers Chin’s line of thinking. “I’m gonna call Joe. You guys keep working through these files, okay?”
The older man answers on the ninth ring, his voice thick with sleep when he says, “Son, you have any idea what time it is where I am?”
Glancing at the digital clock at the nurses’ station, Steve replies curtly, “Four forty-seven in the morning. Where’s Doris, Joe?”
Steve can hear shuffling on the other end of the phone, and he can picture Joe sitting up in bed, trying to figure out an artful lie. “What’s going on, Steve?”
“There are at least eleven dead bodies at my house right now,” he says by way of an answer.
“Are you sure they were looking for your mother?”
“This wasn’t some intruder block party at the McGarrett household,” Steve snaps, ire overpowering his immense respect for the man whom he considers to be his second father. “They were in tactical gear with heavy weaponry and a clear target. This wasn’t just an op, it was a hit.”
“Christ,” Joe breathes out. “Are you alright, son?”
“No, I’m not,” he answers honestly, voice breaking on the last syllable. “Y/N’s in the hospital.”
There’s some shuffling again, louder this time. Steve can tell he’s getting dressed before he declares, “I’m on my way.”
__________
Joe’s baritone voice sounds garbled as it floats over to Steve’s ears like he’s stuck underwater, and the brunette sits up with a start, realizing he inadvertently dozed off while awaiting his mentor’s arrival. Kono places a paper cup with steam wafting out of it beside him, and he looks up at her gratefully. “I was just about to wake you.”
“Kono, hey,” Steve starts softly, reaching across their makeshift work desk to take her hand. “I just- I want you to know how grateful I am. For introducing me to Y/N and then giving me the push to-”
“Don’t,” she whispers emphatically, fighting back tears. “Save it for your reception, okay?”
He nods, sharing a bittersweet smile with your childhood best friend, before taking a fortifying sip of caffeine and heading towards Joe who’s being briefed by Danny. He pulls Steve into an uncharacteristically lengthy hug, then steps back with a sigh. “Son, there’s something you need to know. Your mother-”
“-never left the island,” Steve finishes the thought for him, spotting a concerned Doris rounding the corner into the waiting area. Then the other shoe drops, an all-too-familiar face stepping out from behind his mother.
“What the fuck?” Danny hisses under his breath at the sight of the two women arriving together.
“Steven,” Doris starts with a sympathetic click of her tongue, arms outstretched as she approaches her eldest. She stops short at the look in his eyes and the tight clench of his jaw. His rage is palpable, and the image of his hands around Doris’ throat flashes unbidden behind his closed eyelids. “They had plans of our house,” he says, his voice barely audible. “They took the handle of the basement door off so we had nowhere to go.”
If his mother is wondering who the we is, she’s doing an excellent job of hiding it. Her shadow, on the other hand, voices the question out loud. “Who was with you?” she asks, concerned. “Are you hurt?”
“My fiancée,” Steve spits out, trying and failing to tamp down the venom dripping from his words.
“I didn’t-” Tears brim in Doris’ eyes and Steve forces himself to look away. “I had no idea, Steven. I’m so sorry.”
“Of course you didn’t know,” he laughs sadly. Meeting his mother’s gaze once more, he says, “You shouldn’t be here. You need to lay low in a safe house until we figure out who’s running this op.”
“You need to play it safe, too, Steve,” the younger brunette speaks up. “Come with us.”
“Cath-” Her name catches in his throat like the shards of glass still taking up residence in the cracks along his knuckles. “I’m not going anywhere.”
“Then we’re staying here with you,” Doris says with a sense of finality. “At least until she's out of surgery.”
“Y/N.”
“What, Steven?”
Doleful eyes look up to meet his mother’s, the mix of blue and hazel in her irises an exact reflection of his own. “Her name is Y/N.”
__________
The first rays of sunlight stream through the cracks in the blinds into your hospital room, casting an almost angelic glow on your sleeping face. Steve would find the sight absolutely picturesque if his eyes weren’t laser focused on the steady rise and fall of your chest, terrified that every breath you take could be your last.
The bullet lodged in a tertiary bronchus of Y/N’s left superior lung lobe, just shy of the cardiac notch, your surgeon had explained to him. We were able to safely remove a portion of her lung, and we didn’t see any bullet fragments penetrate the pericardium, the sac around the heart. She’ll have to take it slow and avoid strenuous activity, especially with the rib fractures healing, but we anticipate a full recovery in due time. Steve had done some extensive Google searching following his conversation with the surgeon, but an article detailing the amount of hemorrhage that could occur from damage to intercostal vessels had his skin feeling hot and sticky again, and he forced himself to stop.
The flurry of activity in the recovery ward outside your room is muffled by the drone in his ears, interrupted every so often by the steady beeping of your monitors, proof that you’re still alive. Leaning his elbows against jittery knees, he presses his clasped hands to his forehead and finally breaks the silence. “So… the CIA, huh?”
Catherine sighs, running her fingers through her hair before saying, “I would’ve told you if I could.”
“I see why they assigned you to Doris,” Steve huffs quietly. “You both have the same penchant for half-truths.”
“Steven-” his mother starts, but he cuts her off with a withering glance.
“The least you could’ve done, the very least, was warn me to be on my guard.”
“And what would you have done differently?”
“Reinforce the house. Have Y/N stay with Danny. I don’t know what I would’ve done, because you didn’t give me an option.” He rubs his face roughly and takes a deep breath, trying to ward off the crushing weight of exhaustion. “Look, uh, Y/N’s going to be fine, so you guys really should get going. Get someplace safe.”
The two women nod, standing and gathering their things. Catherine steps out into the hallway, but Doris lingers at the threshold of your room, turning back to her son with tears in her eyes. “I’m sorry, Steven,” she whispers, her voice cracking on his name. “I thought- I thought if I went back to the only thing I was ever good at, I could keep you safe.”
He rises from his chair to meet her in the doorway and pulls her into a tight embrace, years of questions left unanswered and moments missed passing between them in the span of a few seconds. “That’s not the only thing you were good at, Mom,” he divulges quietly.
She cups his cheek in her hand, and Doris can see the little boy she left behind peek through the hardened exterior of her adult son when he leans into her touch. “When this is all over, I’ll come see you, okay? I want to get to know my daughter-in-law.” I want to get to know you, she thinks sadly, deciding it’s better to keep that thought inside for now. “Stay safe, Steven.”
He nods. “You too, Mom.”
He follows her out into the hallway, calling out for Catherine who stops and turns at the sound of his voice. Jogging down the hall to make up the distance, Steve stops in front of his long-time lover, ex, and almost-wife. “Thank you,” he says awkwardly, now unsure of why he even stopped her from leaving. “For watching out for my mom,” he clarifies.
“Of course,” Cath responds. “She’s family.”
“Right, well, uh-” He sniffs and scratches the back of his neck. “Take care of yourself.”
“You too, Steve.”
He turns to head back to your room, but Catherine’s hand on his arm stops him. “She wrote to me,” the brunette blurts out in a confession. “Y/N, she- she wrote to me, and I found it in my old inbox a few months back.” Her eyes are glassy when she continues, “She, um, thanked me for being there for you all those years before she came into the picture. And the way she talks about you, Steve, God, she really loves you.” Steve drops his gaze to the ground, overcome with emotion, and nods. “Y/N told me about the ring, too.”
His head whips up at that, concern flooding his ocean blue eyes. “Cath-”
“It’s okay, really. I’m glad she told me.” They’re silent for a few moments, then Catherine says, “Look, Steve, just because I’m not in your life anymore doesn’t mean I don’t still care about you. And Y/N… it’s so clear that she loves you. That she’s good for you.”
“For the first time in my life,” Steve reveals quietly, “I know what it feels like to be chosen. For the first time in my life, I feel like a priority.”
“You should be a priority, Steve. You deserve to be happy, and you deserve to be happy with her.” Catherine presses a delicate kiss to his stubbled cheek, and it feels distinctly like a final goodbye. “See you around, sailor.”
She turns and continues down the hall, but Steve has lived a life filled with one too many unanswered questions. “Cath?” he calls after her. “What would you have said? If I had asked, what would you have said?”
Catherine smiles at him, a bittersweet smile that holds years of love, friendship, and fond memories. “I would’ve said ‘yes’, Steve.”
__________
A few days later, you’re enjoying a small, simple breakfast a la McGarrett that tastes like a Michelin star meal compared to the hospital food you’ve been forcing down since waking up from your surgery. “An omelet has never tasted this good,” you moan happily around another bite, and Steve grins at you. “I hope you still feel that way when we get you back home.”
The mention of home has your smile faltering as you recall the destruction that ensued on that fateful night. “Do we still…” You hesitate, unsure of how to phrase your question delicately. “Can we go back home?”
“We’re fixing the place up for you as we speak, babe,” Danny jumps in, sharing a quick look with his best friend. The crime scene cleanup crew had done a stellar job over the past two days, but Steve was insisting on pulling up and replacing the entire kitchen floor, claiming a remodel was past due anyway. No one had the heart to tell him they knew exactly why he couldn’t look at the old linoleum tiles.
“You guys are the best,” you gush. “I was worried we would have to move.”
“No, baby, are you kidding me?” Steve tuts. “Mary and I were raised in that house, and we’re gonna raise little McGarretts of our own there, too.”
“Don’t tell me I have to deal with more of you,” Danny groans, and you laugh before your entire left side smarts and you suck in air through your teeth.
“Danny!” Steve admonishes, and you’re quick to soothe his ruffled feathers.
“Are you two upsetting my favorite patient?” Your lovely nurse, Lani, narrows her eyes playfully at your boys as she enters the room, making notes in your chart of your fluid rate and vitals on the monitor.
“No, ma’am,” they answer in unison, and she huffs at them skeptically. Turning her attention to you, she asks, “How are you feeling today, sweetheart?”
“Less pain, more so discomfort. My stitches are starting to get itchy like you said they would.” She nods and hums sympathetically, then smiles and says, “That means you’re healing.”
“Does that mean I can take a real shower today?”
“Nice try,” she laughs, adjusting the pillow you’re leaning against. “Not quite yet. But Mina will be in soon to take care of you, dear.”
With a pout you ask, “You’re leaving me?”
“You’ll be discharged by the time I start my next shift,” Lani answers, squeezing your shoulder in a sweet gesture. “And Commander McGarrett?” She turns to him, one eyebrow quirked, and the SEAL sits up at attention. “We don’t want to see you in here for at least a year, okay?”
As Steve nods dutifully, Danny jokes, “I mean, really, you oughtta give this guy a punchcard or something at this point. Nine sets of stitches and the tenth one’s free, huh?”
Shaking her head, she calls, “Goodbye, you two. Get well soon, Y/N, dear!”
“What a gem,” you smile, “I love her.”
Danny stands with a soft grunt and announces his departure, too. “Gotta collect my monkeys and drop them off at school,” he explains, leaning in to press a kiss to your cheek. “I’ll bring the kids by later and make sure this guy hasn’t bored you to tears, yeah?”
“You’re a real comedian, Detective Williams,” Steve yells as he leaves, rolling his eyes at his best friend’s ribbing. You reach your hand out towards your fiancé and wiggle your fingers, gesturing for him to come closer. Your EKG lines only allow you to stretch so far, and you fall back against the pillows with a huff. “I don’t like hospitals, Steve.”
“I know,” he responds sympathetically, coming to sit on the edge of your bed and brushing some loose hairs off your forehead.
“I don’t like having all these wires and tubes connected to every inch of my body.”
“Trust me, I know.”
“And I hate having to ask for help. Not even being able to bathe myself? Hard pass. It makes me feel useless.”
“Y/N-”
“And the last time we were in this place, the roles were reversed and I was so terrified that you weren’t gonna wake up and-”
“Honey, baby, angel, light of my life,” he cuts you off gently, squeezing your cheeks between his large hands, “would you just- would you take a breath for me? Nice and easy, just like that,” he instructs, breathing with you. “Thank you so much.”
“Was that your polite way of telling me to shut up?” You smile lovingly up at him, angling your head to press a kiss to each of his palms.
“I would never-” He molds his lips to your forehead. “-ever-” Another kiss. “-do such a thing.”
“Perish the thought,” you snort. “Will you snuggle with me, babe?”
He glances down at the bed, appraising. “Are we both gonna fit?”
You pout at him, dramatically jutting out your bottom lip. “I make it work when you’re in here.”
“You don’t pull your punches, future Mrs. McGarrett,” he laughs warmly, wedging his large frame beside you in the comedically small bed.
You hum contentedly as his arm settles around you, resting gently on your injured side. “Who said I’m taking your last name?”
“Ouch,” he mock cries, hand going to his heart. “Another direct hit.”
“I’m not done yet,” you declare, and he challenges, “Oh yeah? What else you got?”
“My scar is gonna be cooler than all of yours combined.”
His fingers trace delicate patterns along your side and he scoffs, “Is not.”
“Is, too!”
“Who’s gonna be the judge, huh?”
“All of our friends.”
“Nu uh,” he shakes his head. “Unfair advantage. You’ll get bonus pity points.”
“We’ll take pictures. Make it a blind experiment.”
“You’re on, Mrs. McGarrett.”
“What did I just say to you?”
“My last name’s cooler. You’ll come around.”
“You’re so annoying, Steve.”
“I know.”
“But I love you.”
“…I kn- Ow! Okay, okay, I’m sorry! I love you, too! Stop pinching me, you cheeky little- How do you have the energy to do this right now?“
__________
[A/N: Woo baby this one was a doozy, but I’m actually really proud of it? 🥹 Writing this gave me anxiety and then big sad and then big smile for my goofy baby Steve, I hate myself fr. This has been sitting in my drafts inspired by snippets of various episodes of the show because, let’s face it, writing myself into one Steven Jack McGarrett’s life is my guilty pleasure. I love this man sm and I wanted to explore his more emotional side as opposed to the tough and sarcastic version of Steve we’re used to. I hope you enjoyed this lil piece that’s been living rent free in my head for months now 🖤 Also...peep the Macbeth reference 💅🏽✨]

Big idiot
Paring: Steve McGarrett x Latina!Reader
Summary: You always knew that Steve was a reckless idiot. One that you couldn't help but adore; however, sometimes you don't know what to do when he tries to hid things from you.
A/N: This take place in season 1 episode 24. There is some mild use of Spanish. It's not much but I hope you guys enjoy it. Much love
Tumblr media
"You, my friend," Danny's voice could be heard as the front door opened. "Are an idiot. " A smile pulled at my lips as I wiped my hands on a kitchen towel.
"This again?" Steve groaned, and I bit back a small laugh. "Danno, how many times have we gone through with this? My methods are efficient."
"Efficient?" Danny exclaimed. "Please, they are crazy. "
"You boys arguing again?" I left the kitchen and saw them standing close to the door. They both looked at me as I smiled at them, amused. "What happened this time?" I titled my head to the side and placed my hands on my hips.
"Y/N," Danny pointed at Steve, "A rational person who will agree with me." Steve ignored Danny's comment as he smiled at me. A twinkle in his blue-green eyes as he took three sizable strides, closing the gap between us.
"Hey there, beautiful." His hands found their way around my waist, and he pulled me close.
"Hola, handsome." I could hear a groan from Danny as I placed a quick kiss on Steve's cheek. "Now, why is Danny calling you crazy this time?"
"He's exaggerating." Steve pulled me to his side as he turned to look at Danny. He tilted his head a bit as he gave him a look. I noticed the frown that settled on Danny's lips.
"Is he now?" I raised an eyebrow as I looked back at Steve. "Danny, why is this man an idiot?" I stepped forward and out of Steve's hold as I looked back at Danny. He looked at me with his light blue eyes before he glanced behind me at the man who reached out for me; his fingers lightly touched my arm. He quickly avoided my gaze as he looked down a bit.
"Angel," Steve called for my attention, and that was how I knew this wasn't good. Whatever his idea was, he didn't want me to know.
"Danny," I wasn't going to budge. Steve wasn't going to tell me. He would brush it off, and Danny was the only one who would tell me out of the two. "I'm not gonna ask again."
"He wants to break into the Governor's mansion." Danny's voice was quiet that I barely missed what he was saying. I stood there as I felt their gaze on me and tried to process my thoughts. Process what Danny just said. I bit the inside of my cheek as everything started to make sense.
Steve had been on the edge ever since he started to receive those envelopes. Envelopes that were filled with the evidence his father had left him. Evidence that linked to his father's death. I took a deep breath before I nodded slightly. "I-" I cleared my throat, trying to figure out what to say. Did I have the right to say anything? Steve and I had only been together for six months. "Danny, would you like some fruit?" I decided to change the topic. "I was in the process of cutting the fruit if you like some." I brushed past Steve as I went back to the kitchen. I picked up the knife and returned to cutting half the watermelon I had left. I could hear their soft voices before Danny awkwardly came into the kitchen. He picked at the fruit before he placed a kiss on the side of my head.
"I'm gonna head out," He glanced behind me, and I kept cutting the watermelon. "I gotta do something." He snatched another piece, and I shook my head.
"Here," I looked through the cabinets and pulled out a Tupperware. "Take some with you." He gave me a small smile as I filled it with the mixture of fruit I had cut. "Yo no lo necesito todo. (I don't need it all)" I had been in the craving mood for some, feeling as if the day would end well.
"Thank you," He pulled me into a hug. "You are the best." I gave him a small smile and handed him the container before going back to cutting the bit of watermelon I had left. I was a little too into my thoughts as Danny's words repeated.
"Hijo de puta, (Son of a bitch)" I hissed as I pulled a finger back in pain. The blood slowly started to form around the cut on my finger as I brought it to my mouth.
"Are you okay?" Steve rushed into the kitchen, and I nodded. He pulled my finger out as he looked at my wound before dragging me to the bathroom. "Sit tight. Let me get the first aid kit." He glanced at the wound again as I sat on the toilet seat. He opened the mirror and pulled out the small first aid kit on the lower shelf. I stayed quiet as he moved to sit on the side of the tub. He grabbed my hand and began to work on it. "This might sting a bit." He mumbled as he opened the saline solution cloth and gently wiped the wound. I winced a bit but allowed him to clean the wound. It was quiet between us as he rubbed in some Neosporin and wrapped a band-aid around it.
"Thank you," I said softly as I watched him gently rub the band-aid. He looked up at me and sighed.
"Talk to me." He hooked his finger under my chin and had me meet his gaze. His thumb touched my lower lip as he held eye contact with me. His eyes searched my face, almost begging me to talk to him. To say something. I took a deep breath before closing my eyes.
"I don't like the idea of you breaking into the Governor's," I said softly. "You're doing something dangerous, Steve." I opened my eyes as I began to think of all the possible outcomes of his doing this. None of it went well.
"I have to do this." He cupped my cheeks, and I leaned into his touch. "Something is not right here, and I must find out." I couldn't help but frown as I placed my hands over his.
"I understand that amor," I bit my lower lip. "I understand that you need answers, pero why did you try to hide it from me?"
"To protect you." He answered back as he placed a soft kiss on my lips. "I didn't want you to worry about me, and I didn't want you to be in danger." He moved and placed a kiss on my forehead.
"Eres un idiota. (You're an idiot)" I pulled away from his touch. "You can't keep hiding things from me." I tucked a strand of my hair behind my ear. "If this relationship is going to work, I need you to be honest with me. I understand that there are things you won't always be able to tell me, but I need to know what you can." I held his hands in mine as I looked down at them. "I can handle myself, but what will you do when I chase after you because you didn't tell me what you were doing?" The corner of his lips tugged downwards.
"I'm sorry." He held my hands tightly before he brought them up to his lips. He placed a kiss on the back of my knuckles. "You're right. No more secrets." He promised with another kiss on the back of my hand.
"You do what you have to do," I moved to cup his cheeks. "I will be here waiting for you to come back to me. That's all I ask for is that you return to me no matter where you go or what you do."
"I can do that." He flashed me a smile, which I returned with one of my own. " I will always do everything I can to return to you."
"Good." I moved forward and kissed him. His smile grew against my lips, and he pulled me into his lap. A laugh left his lips as I let out a slight surprised noise. "Steve!" I lightly smacked his shoulder before shaking my head at him. His beautiful ocean-blue eyes gleamed with contentment as the green specks seemed to glow a little more. He held me tightly by my waist as he looked up at me. I moved my arms around his shoulders and ran my fingers through his neck.
"You look beautiful today." His fingers moved up my shirt, touching the slightly exposed skin.
"Don't even think about it, buddy." I patted his shoulder as I pushed myself off his lap. "You're not gonna get that lucky today." He raised an eyebrow and tilted his head to the side as if this was a challenge for him. I shook my head and moved away from his touch, which caused him to stand up. "Steve, I'm serious." I pointed a finger at him and took a step back. He gave me that smile as if he wouldn't take me seriously. "Please," I gave him a slight pout, "I prepared some food so we could enjoy it."
"Only because you asked so nicely." He raised his hand as if he was giving to my demands. I smiled as I held his hand out to him.
"I had a huge craving for something fruity," He took my hand as I pulled him with me to the kitchen. "And I think I might have gone too overboard on the shopping." I could hear the small laugh he let lose from his nose as he took in the fruit I had yet to cut.
"Little?" He raised an eyebrow. I smiled as I bit my lip and plopped a mango into my mouth. I shrugged and held a melon up to his lips. He didn't fight it as he opened his mouth and took the piece. He let out a slight hum as he nodded.
"Good, right?" He reached for another piece. He mumbled as he shoved the other piece in his mouth. "So worth it then." I took a strawberry and bit into it; a small moan left my lips as the sweetness of the strawberry filled my tastebuds. Steve pulled me into a kiss, and I didn't fight him as I moved my arms around his neck. I pushed myself up on my tippy toes and leaned into him. I hummed into the kiss as I felt his tongue touch mine as he deepened the kiss. He pulled back and smiled as I clung to him.
"Definitely worth it." He winked at me. I bit my lip and shook my head as I pushed him away.
"You're a big idiot." I plopped the rest of the strawberry in my mouth.
"Your big idiot." He took another fruit.

The worst Valentines day… maybe?
Author’s Note: Hey everyone.
I watched Hawaii 5-0 a while back apparantly and it was the episode with the Valentines day stories and came up with this. Found this in my drafts.
Enjoy.
Love,
Lis
You were sitting in the car with Lou as everyone was trying to find out, how Steve got the shiner and what your part was in it.
“You’re a Seal. I mean come on. How do you get a shiner like that?” Danny argues, making Lou laugh hysterically.
They argued back and forth and soon enough Lou, then Chin and lastly Danny explain why their Valentines day was miserable.
“You know what Danny?” you ask.
“What?” he asked annoyed.
“For someone who always makes fun of Steve and me, about how unromantic we are and how we are not able to show our feelings, your stunt with Melissa is really telling a lot about you.”
Lou was suppressing a smile and looked out the window.
“Yeah, of course.” Danny grumbled and you could hear a faint laugh from Steve.
“At least I don’t have a shiner.” Danny retorts, making Steve shut up.
“Come on now, guys. We have all told our stories. Now you need to tell us all what happened.” Kono interjects. You hear Steve sigh and then hear him mumble something.
“What was that?” Danny asks, before you can.
“I said, fine. Go ahead babe.” Steve answers, giving you permission to share the story. You also sigh, knowing where this is going to go.
“Fine, we had a wonderful evening. Steve took me out in the evening, we had a really awesome dinner. We went for a wonderful and super romantic walk on the beach…” you emphasize the word romantic, for Danny to hear, making everyone chuckle over the in-ears.
“And then we got home, and Steve led me in with my eyes closed. I didn’t know what was coming next, but he positioned me and told me to keep my eyes closed.” You explain, earning curious looks from Lou.
“I hope this is a family friendly version.” Danny remarks and followed by a quiet “Ow”, when Steve hits him.
“Anyway..” you move on. Well when I was allowed to open my eyes, Steve had hid and in front of me was a nerfgun.” And as you say the word nerfgun, everyone groans.
“You’re not serious?” Lou asks and you nod your head at him.
“You two are freaks.” Danny says and Kono and Chin agree. Lou also nodding his head along.
“Moving on!” you interrupt them all “We have a nerfgun hunt around the house. It was fun and a bit childish. And as soon as Steve was out of munition, which always happens to him first, he tackles me to the couch. I head him coming though but miscalculated my shot and…. Well….” You trail off and everyone erupts in laughter.
“Wait with the munition or with the gun?” Lou asks while laughing.
“Kinda both…” you say with a high pitched voice, raising your shoulders and mustering an guilty smile.
Everybody keeps laughing and Danny just concludes with a typical: “That’s why you don’t play with guns in the house.” Which makes them all laugh harder.
But before you can continue, your suspects move and you all get back to the case. But Steve and you are sure that this topic will come up again in the evening.

Promises
A/N: I’m back….again, hopefully for good this time. I’m working on a few more one shots and there may or may not be a couple series in the making. I also wanted to thank @kati-1997 for all the amazing ideas and help she gives (most of my writing is inspired by her ideas or at least incorporate her ideas).
I sigh as I finish up the autopsy as Max walks in. “Is everything okay Dr. Y/L/N?” I hum and look at him, “What? Yeah, yeah I’m okay. Why do you ask?” He tilts his head as he throws his gloves into the trash can, “It’s just today you’ve seemed quite perturbed and slightly irritable at times.”
I sigh again as I set my clipboard on my desk, “I’m sorry Max I didn’t mean to seem rude. It’s just.” I sigh as I sink into my chair and run a hand down my face, “Oh Max I’m sorry I don’t want to dump my burdens onto you.” He pushes his glasses up his nose and protests, “It’s hardly a burden, I consider you a close friend and I would like to help if I can.” I brush some hair away from my face and lean forward in my chair, “Its just, this morning I got into a fight with my boyfriend and I said some things, mean and nasty things, that aren’t true and I don’t know why I said them and now I don’t know what to do.”
Max leans against my desk before nodding, “I did not know you were seeing someone but it appears to me that you simply have to apologize.” I shake my head and groan, “You don’t get it, I can’t just apologize. He-, we-, it’s just, god Max it’s not that simple. What if he calls it off even after I apologize?” Max looks at me with serious eyes before asking, “Do you love him?” My eyes widen and I nod, “Yes! Of course I love him.”
Max nods as if he already knew the answer, “Then you at least owe him an apology, even if he does end it if you truly love him you need to apologize.” I nod knowing he’s right before jumping as a familiar voice cuts in, “Apologizing is definitely something that you should do, especially if you mean it. Speaking from personal experience a little remorse goes a long way.”
I spin around to meet the ocean blue eyes that I had watched break from my words just this morning. I lick my lips and nod, “I am sorry, truly and genuinely sorry. I never meant the things I said and I don’t know why I did it but I regret doing it.” I watch a smile threaten to give away his cover before he nods, “Just tell him that and I think you’ll be okay.” A small smile graces my face and I nod, “I will, I promise I’ll find a way to make it up to him too.” Steve nods before him and Danny look at Max, “Alright Max, what was it you called about?”
Once Max was done telling them the autopsy report on their latest victim they bid their goodbyes and start leaving. I bite my lip trying to decide what to do when I take off down the hall after them. When I get close to them I call out, “Commander McGarrett! Can-can I borrow you for a second?” He spins around to look at me before hesitantly nodding, “Yeah, here we’ll go in here so we have privacy, unless you don’t mind Danny hearing anything you say.” I know the silent question he’s asking with those words, is it about our relationship or about something else?
I point towards an empty room, “Privacy, please.” He nods leading us to the door before turning back to Danny, “I’ll be out in a second.” I see Danny’s concerned face before he nods, “Yeah, it’s fine I’ll wait here.”
When we get in the room and the door’s closed I grab Steve’s cheeks as tears threaten to spill down mine, “I’m sorry, I’m so so sorry! I didn’t mean what I said, if I had a problem with you putting your life on the line I shouldn’t have ever went out with you. I don’t have a problem with it, well, I mean I do because I can’t imagine my life without you, but I’ve come to terms with it. I don’t know what got into me this morning but, i-if you feel that you need to go to North Korea, go. I just have this feeling that it’s a bad idea and I know that you’re a SEAL I know you’ve done stuff like this before but you’d be dealing with Wofat, and he wants to kill you. It’s just, I don’t know how to explain it. I guess, I guess I’m just scared.”
I sniffle as I watch Steve’s face soften before he cups my cheeks and wipes the tears that I didn’t even notice had fallen, “I know you’re scared, I see it every day, even before we got together you were always scared for the team. I promise you, I’ll be okay, I’ll come home to you.” I nod as I feel more tears threaten to fall as I bury my face in his neck and wrap my arms around his torso. His hands slide to hold me close and he rubs a hand up and down my back, “I’ll come home to you, I’ll always, come home to you.”
I pull back just enough to make eye contact with Steve and I nod, “S-Steve, there’s something else that makes me want you to stay.” He brushes a piece of hair from my face as his brows furrow, “What do you mean baby?” I snort at the irony of his words before sighing, “I’m pregnant Steve. At least I think I am, everything adds up and I’ve got a pregnancy test in my bathroom cabinet but I’m too scared to take it.” I step back a little more as his eyes widen and his mouth opens and closes, reminding me of a fish, “What? H-how?” I tilt my head with a small smile, “Stevie, you know how. There’s really only one way to get pregnant.”
I watch as he smiles and pulls me into him before leaving a quick kiss on my lips, “Take the test, before I go. I want to know before I leave.” I smile and nod, “Only if you’ll be there when I do it.” He nods and cups my face, “Do you have any idea how much I love you?” I blush and shrug my shoulders causing him to frown, “Y/N/N, sweetheart, light of my life, you are everything to me. I’ve thought about kids and I honestly never thought I would ever have the chance or meet the right woman but now. Fuck, now I’m standing in front of my secret girlfriend who just told me she’s pretty sure she’s pregnant and I honestly have never been happier.” My smile drops slightly as I ask, “What if I’m not?”
He runs his thumb across my bottom lip with an adorable pout on his face, “Well, if you aren’t, we have all the time in the world, there’s no need to rush. I mean no one except us knows we’re together because I’m worried Wofat will use you against me and I would never forgive myself if he hurt you, because of me. But I’d also be lying if I said a small part of me isn’t overjoyed at the thought of being a father and praying that the test says you are pregnant.”
I smile and grab the back of his head pulling him into a passionate kiss, “I’ll take lunch a little early and head home and you can meet me there before you leave. Just let me know when you’re about to leave.” He smiles his dazzling smile that swept me off my feet the first time we met before nodding, “Yes ma’am.”
When we exit the room I wipe the remainder of my tears off my cheeks as Danny looks between us confused and worried. “Steven what did you do to her?!” I chuckle a little as Steve’s eyes widen, “I didn’t do anything! We talked about what she needed to talk about and she got a little emotional she’s a woman Danny, an emotional one at that.”
I scoff at Steve, “Excuse me, did you just say all woman are emotional? Because that’s not true, my sister’s like a brick wall, in fact you’d be better off making a wall cry than her.” Steve and Danny both laugh before Steve pats Danny’s shoulder, “Alright Danno, we gotta go. See ya later Dr. Y/L/N!” I fake an annoyed growl before yelling after his retreating form, “How many times do I have to tell you?! Call me Y/N!”
The response I get in return is a sly wink and a, “Sure thing Doc.” I roll my eyes before heading back into the morgue.
————————————————-
I take a deep breath as I shakily grab the box that had been tucked away in my bathroom cabinet for a little over a week as a gentle yet firm hand rubs circles into the small of my back silently urging me on as I open the Clear Blue box and pull out the pregnancy test. As I hold the test in one hand I read the instructions. When I set the box and leaflet down I turn to Steve with anxiety bubbling in my stomach, “Are you sure about this? If I take it, and it says I am there’s no going back.”
He uses his thumbs to rub circles into my biceps before pecking my nose, “Babe, no matter what you do, whether you take the test now or not, if you’re pregnant, you’re pregnant there’s no going back.” I wet my lips as I nod, “O-okay, it says I can pee directly on the stick so uh, here we go? I guess.”
I put the cap on the test and set it on the counter before washing my hands. I dry my hands before grabbing onto Steve making sure I can see the test from where I’m resting against him, “Stevie?”
His hand continues rubbing up and down my back, “Yeah, sweetheart?” I nuzzle into the warmth of his chest before sighing, “I kind of hope it’s positive.” He places a kiss on my hair before whispering, “Me too.”
I suck in a breath as the last block fills the screen before gasping at the word on the screen. The one little world that just changed our life forever…pregnant. I turn to Steve with my mouth hanging open to see the same expression on his face before he blinks and looks at me. As soon as we make eye contact he pulls me into a hug that lifts my feet slightly off the ground, “You’re pregnant. We’re going to be parents.”
He sets me down and holds me at an arms distance with a huge smile, “You are going to be the best damn mother ever.” I blush and smile, “And I know you’ll be an amazing father.”
I grab the test off the counter and sigh, “I don’t want to throw it away. It feels like such an important thing now. Like I want to keep looking at it to make sure I’m not dreaming.” I lean into Steve as he wraps his arms around my torso and rests his head on my shoulder pressing kisses along my neck, “Keep it.” I roll my head to the side to give him more access as I choke back a moan, “What?” He chuckles as he runs his nose up my neck before nibbling on my earlobe, “Leave it in your purse or somethin’ that way when you think you’re dreaming you can whip it out and see the proof.”
I let out a laugh that quickly turns to a moan, “Whip it out? Are we talking about the pregnancy test or your dick?” He bit into the juncture of my neck causing me to release a whine, “Steve.”
He hummed before soothing the bite with his tongue. He pulls back slightly and groans when I grind into him, “Baby, I gotta go.” I growled and dig my nails into his forearms, “Steve I swear if you leave me all riled up.” He hisses slightly before chuckling, “Or what? Come on baby, tell me what you’re going to do?” I throw my head back on his shoulder and look up at him, “I’ll be mad at you.” He gasps dramatically before running his hands up my shirt, “We can’t have that now can we?”
—————————————————
I pant slightly, covered in sweat as I button my jeans up. I turn and lean against the counter as Steve zips up his pants and grabs my hairbrush and the pregnancy test off the floor that had been casualties of our escapade. He hands me the pregnancy test and kisses me on the cheek, “Here ya go momma, I do have to go now.” I bite my lip to hold back tears as I nod, “I know, just, promise you’ll be careful.” He smiles a sad smile before nodding, “I promise. I love you.” I pull him in for a kiss and when we pull away I brush his hair back, “I love you too.”
————————————————————
I glance up from my laptop on my desk when the door is thrown open and a disheveled Danny falls through it. He looks at me with wide worried eyes before asking, “Do you know where Max is?” I furrow my eyebrows and shake my head, “No, he said something about running an errand but he left like twenty minutes ago. Why?” Danny runs a hand through his hair as he anxiously paces. I jump up and grab his shoulders, “Danny! Snap out of it, you’re going to make me sick, what happened?”
He stops pacing and takes a deep breath, “It’s Steve.” I let go of Danny as if he burned me and I feel the anxiety that’s been in my stomach since he left turn into dread, “What do you mean? Danny, what’s wrong with Steve?” He sighs and shakes his head and I grab his arm and shake him slightly, “Danny! What the hell is wrong with Steve?!”
“He’s missing.” I step backwards slightly as Danny continues, “We found out that Jenna Kaye was lying to us and we’ve lost all contact with Steve. We think Jenna has been working with Wofat, which means Wofat has Steve.” I feel the blood drain from my face as I dart for the trash can. I retch as the last of my lunch leaves my body and Danny rushes towards me. “Y/N?! Are you okay?!”
At his words I fully process what he says and feel tears start to overflow no matter how hard I tried to hold them back. I try and fail to hold back a sob as I shake my head, “No, no, this isn’t happening. This can’t be happening. He promised.” Danny furrows his eyebrows before taking a step back, “What are you talking about?” My eyes search his face debating if I should tell him our secret and remember that Steve trusts him with his life, so I know he can be trusted. “We- Steve and I- we’re together. Like together together.”
Danny shakes his head confused, “What?” I wipe my tears as I run and grab my purse remembering that I took Steve’s advice and squirreled the pregnancy test in my purse. I willed the tears away as I dug through my purse before finding the little white and blue stick that I had tucked away in a pocket. I shakily hand it to Danny and watch as the confusion morphed into surprise, “You’re? And he’s?” I nod knowing what he’s trying and failing to say, “Yes, I'm pregnant and the baby is his.”
His eyes widen before his facial features soften, “How long have you two?” He trails off and I wipe the remaining tears from cheeks, “A little over a year.” His mouth drops and for a second I thought he was frozen but he snaps out of it and whisper shouts, “A year?! And neither of you said anything?!” I nod, “We were going to, and then Wofat started targeting people close to Steve and he got scared and made me promise to keep it a secret, at least until you guys caught Wofat.”
He nods following along before asking, “Are you going to tell the others?” My eyes widen and I shake my head frantically, “No! Absolutely not, I’m not going to tell anyone anything until Steve is back and we decide if we want to or not, it’s not just my life I’m considering, I’m thinking for three now because god knows Steve doesn’t do much of that.” Danny chuckles and I continue, “Danny, you have to promise me, you can’t tell anyone about this, about the pregnancy or me and Steve.” He nods but I want a verbal response, “Promise me.”
He hands me the pregnancy test before nodding, “I promise Y/N. It stays between us, but I better be the godfather.” I sniffle and nod as I put the test back in my purse, “Deal, now, I’m going with you, I want to know everything you do, he’s my boyfriend and my child’s father, I think I’ve earned that right.” He nods before gesturing me to follow, “Okay, I’ll drive.”
————————————————————
I tap my foot anxiously as the team decides what they want to do. When they finally come to a decision I breathe a sigh of relief knowing that if anyone can find Steve it’s this team (and Joe). As they’re leaving I run to grab Danny’s arm, “Promise you’ll keep me updated.” He squeezes my arm and nods, “I promise, stay here with Lori and I’ll call as soon as we touchdown.” I nod and silently thank him.
—————————————————-
I fiddle with a pen that had been laying on Steve’s desk before jumping when Lori speaks, “I wouldn’t mess with his stuff.” I spin around and nod putting his pen back where he had it, “Oh, yeah, sorry I’m a fiddler when I’m nervous.” She nods before sitting on the couch and putting her feet on the coffee table, “Mind me asking you why you’re so concerned about Steve.”
I manage to not blush before sitting in one of the chairs and turning to face Lori, “Well, we’ve known each other for over a year and he has a way of working his way into your life, even if you don’t want him to.” I narrow my eyes as she sighs wistfully, “Yeah, I understand that.” I clear my throat and stand up from the chair, “Um, I’m going to run to the bathroom really quick. Do you want anything from one of the vending machines?” She shakes her head with a small smile and I spin around on my heal and rush towards the bathroom.
It’s not surprising to know someone else likes Steve but it’s awkward when someone outwardly shows it and it fills me with jealousy knowing that Lori works with him all day everyday and I only get him a few hours every few days. I splash my face with cold water hoping to quell my nausea before pulling out my phone and smiling at the lock screen. It was a picture of Steve and I sharing a quick kiss that I had managed to get a selfie of. I tilt my head back and blink, willing the tears away knowing that if I start crying now I’m not going to stop.
Once I’ve calmed myself down I grabbed some M&M’s from the vending machine and head back to Steve’s office. When I step into the office Lori is on the phone and I rush forward, “Are they there?” She smiles and nods before pulling the phone away from her ear and putting it on speaker. I sit beside her on the couch and listen as Danny rants about the poor excuse of a helicopter they call Tangerine and that when they opened the door chickens jumped out. He continues relaying the plan before asking, “Hey, Lori, is Y/N there?” I lean forward before answering, “Yeah, Danny I’m here, you’re on speaker.”
“Can I talk to you privately for a minute?” I bite my lip and grab the phone before turning it off speaker and walking across the room, “Yeah Danny, it’s just me now.” I hear him clear his throat before he asks, “How are you holding up?” I let out a noise of discontent and he sighs, “Yeah I figured, probably still dealing with morning sickness. Has that bothered you anymore since our conversation yesterday?” I shrug as I answer, “Yes but no, mostly just nerves, that’s what yesterday was about too. It’s honestly not all that bad.”
I hear him chuckle before he seems to sense the underlying anxiety and stress because his voice gets a little quieter and worried, “Hey, Y/N, listen. I know you’re worried and I can only imagine how you must feel right now but it’s not good for you right now. Just, try and relax, drink a cup of tea or do sudoku.” I snort, “That’ll just stress me out more, I don’t have the patience for sudoku I don’t understand the fun of it either.” I can all but hear the eye roll before he sighs, “Okay but seriously babes, you have to calm down. You worrying and stressing isn’t going to change anything. Look we’re 98% sure we have a lock on his location and I will call you as soon as we get him and I have a chance. I’ll bring him home to you Y/N/N, I promise.”
I bite my lip to hold back tears as I nod, “Thank you, I’ll try and drink some tea, maybe it’ll help.” He lets out a sigh of relief as he says his goodbyes. When I hand Lori the phone she lifts an eyebrow, “What was that about?” I blush slightly before smiling sheepishly, “I’ve been a little sick lately and I threw up yesterday when Danny told me and he was just checking to make sure I was relaxing.” She nods before standing from the couch, “Here lay down, take a nap, I’ll even go get you some tea if you want.” I smile and sit on the couch as Lori leaves the office to presumably get tea.
————————————————————
I sip my eighth cup of tea as Lori and I walk to her car to go to the military airport that the team would be landing at before I groan when my phone hits the ground. Lori spins around as I bend down to pick it up and check to make sure the screen isn’t broken. “Y/N/N, that’s like the third time you’ve dropped that thing today.” I tuck my phone ‘securely’ in the waistband of my leggings again before responding to Lori, “Yeah I know, I have a love hate relationship with these leggings. They don’t have pockets so my phone is constantly falling out but they’re so comfy. Literally feels like I’m not wearing pants.” She chuckles before motioning me to continue, “Come on they should be landing soon.”
I quickly catch up as excitement pumps through my bloodstream. We got the call about thirteen hours ago that they have Steve and would be home in about thirteen hours. I lean my head against the window and close my eyes as my stomach churns. I take slow breaths before opening an eye to glance at Lori, “Do you have any gum, a mint flavor preferably?” She hums before shaking her head, “No sorry, why?” I sigh before closing my eyes again, “Helps with nausea.”
When we pull into the airport I jump out of the car before leaning on the hood waiting for the plane to come into sight. I gag slightly before taking another sip of my tea hoping it’ll calm my stomach but all it does is stir it up more. I heave as I double over and groan when all that comes out is spit since there was nothing in my stomach to come out. Lori rushes over and lays a hand on my back between my shoulder blades, “You okay?” I take a sip of my tea once my stomach has decided to calm down and nod my head, “Yeah, yeah I’m okay.” She looks at me skeptically before nodding and then pointing to the ground, “You dropped something again.” I furrow my eyebrows and look down to see my phone, on the ground, again. “For fucks sake!”
———————————————-——-
I all but shake as the plane lands and oh so slowly the team starts to exit and there he was. He seemed okay, a little beaten and bruised but other than that nothing life threatening. I go to run forward but I’m beaten to it when Lori takes off and embraces him in a hug that is far from a friendly hug. I scowl but blush when Danny comes over, “You’re girlfriendness is showing. How’s the baby SEAL?” I smile and shrug, “I guess okay, making me sick every now and then though.” He chuckles and nods, “I remember those days, Rachel was sicker than a dog for her first trimester.”
I grimace thinking about how she must have felt before purking up as Steve starts walking towards me again. Danny senses my excitement and excuses himself and goes to stand by Joe. When Steve gets about ten feet in front of me I take off running and slow down slightly when I get to him so I’m not colliding too hard into his obviously sore body. I wrap my arms around his upper torso and bury my face in his neck as tears I’ve been holding back for two days start to fall. “I was so scared, Stevie.” He pulls me close and buries his face in my hair as he rocks us slightly, “I know baby, I know. I’m so sorry. I never meant for this to happen.”
I sniffle and nod slightly as I smile, “But you still came home, just like you promised.” I feel him pull back when we hear Kono, “Oh. My. God.” I spin around to face her when I feel the blood drain from my face as I process what she’s holding…my phone. I look at Steve wide eyed and his eyes immediately widen when he realizes what my lock screen is. I scramble forward quickly before grabbing my phone from her hands and making eye contact with her silently begging her to not say anything.
She must not interpret my look or she completely ignored my silent pleas, “You two are dating?!” My mouth opens and closes looking for an answer and glancing at Steve who looks just as helpless as me. I look back at Kono and say the only thing I can think of, “It’s not what it looks like!” She crosses her arms and raises an eyebrow, “Really? And how exactly do you explain why you and boss are locking lips?” My eyes dart between everybody and notice the surprised look on everyone’s face, except Danny, even Joe looks surprised. I feel Steve’s hand on my lower back before he speaks, “Okay, you’re right, there’s really no explanation for that other than the obvious.”
This time Lori steps forward and has the decency to look guilty and slightly horrified, “So, you guys are dating?” I glance at Steve and he gives a subtle nod that says he’s okay that we tell them. I sigh before nodding, “Yes. We’ve been together for a little over a year.” Everyone gapes at us as I smile finally relieved that I can show up when he’s at work to visit and that I can show him affection without worrying if some is watching.
————————————————————
After explaining everything and why we kept it a secret Danny is driving Steve and I back to Steve’s place after I promised him I would stay with Steve and make sure he was okay…and to call if we needed anything. His words to be exact were, ‘Call me if you need anything, and I mean anything, even if you can’t find a toothpick, call me.’ I lean forward resting my head on the side of the passenger seat before grabbing Steve’s hand, “I missed you.” Before Steve can answer Danny gags, “Alright love birds no PDA in my car.” Even though Danny seems perturbed at our fingers being interlaced on the center console I can see the faint smile threatening to curl it’s way onto his lips.
I see Steve roll his eyes before holding my hand a little tighter as if he’s scared I’ll pull away. I hum slightly as Steve finally speaks, “I missed you too, baby. How are you doing?” I rub circles into the back of his hand with my thumb as I answer, “Pretty good, I get a little sick every now and then but it’s not as bad as it could be.” He nods before relaxing into the seat, “That’s good.” I nod and place a kiss to his shoulder before shifting to lean on the drivers seat but maintain a grip on Steve’s hand scared that if I let go he’ll be gone.
———————————————————
When Steve and I are curled up in his bed finally settling down to get some much needed sleep I curl myself around him and he runs a hand through my hair while placing a kiss on the palm of my hand. I glance up at him from my position knowing he wants to talk and smile as I meet clear blue eyes filled with love. “I thought about you the whole time. I remembered my promise to come home to you and it gave me the energy to keep going.” I smile and place a kiss on his chest before snuggling further into him, “I know baby, you kept your promise and I believe you will for the rest of our lives and I’m making a promise to you.” He raises an eyebrow as he glances down, “What’s that momma?” I chuckle and roll my eyes at the nickname before answering, “As long as you keep coming home to me, I promise to always be here waiting, no matter what.”
He squeezes me a little tighter, “Promise?” I push myself up on my forearm before brushing away some stray hairs that had fallen into his face as I study his features that are illuminated by the moon before leaning down and kissing him. When I pull away with my lips still brushing his I whisper, “I promise, you just keep coming home and you’ll see I’m telling the truth.”

After a long day at work, you and Steve are finally getting home at around midnight. This last case had been hard on everyone. All of you were working day and night for the last few days, which translates into not much sleep for anyone. Once the two of you were in bed, you felt sleep taking over your senses. Unfortunately, it was taken from you almost as fast as it had come.
“Y/n, are you awake? Y/n?” You felt a hand nudging you. You tried to ignore him with all your might, but if he is anything, he is persistent. “Sweetheart?”
“Steve. I love you but leave me alone please.” You reached your hand up to where his hand is on your shoulder, and you just put your hand on top of his.
“Y/n…” he moved his head to your shoulder and whispered into your ear. “Y/nn…”
You turn your head to the side to look at him. “Whaaaat?” you whined like a child.
“Can you please go get me water?”
“Are you serious right now?” you rubbed your eyes, before looking to the clock on your nightstand, to see it was 1:55 a.m. “It is almost 2 in the morning Steve.”
“I know but I am too tired to move, I feel like if I try to get up, I will just fall to the ground.”
“You are so dramatic.” You fully turn to look at him, only to see a pout on his face. “Ugh, fine.”
You move to get out of bed, but before you actually get up you sit on the edge of the bed. You rub your eyes before getting up and heading downstairs. When you were halfway down the stairs you hear Steve yell “I LOVE YOU!”
“Yeah, yeah.” You mumbled to yourself.
You walked down the rest of the stairs to the kitchen, going to the fridge to grab a few water bottles. The thing is that once you opened that door… Your stomach was starting to growl. That’s when you realize that you and Steve didn’t eat dinner. So, you decided to get a small snack. You grabbed some crackers out of the pantry. Then you made your way towards the doorway. Only to be stop once you saw the cookies on the counter, you grabbed one on your way back up the stairs.
When you came back into the room Steve was laying on his stomach, facing away from the door. You placed your snack and the extra waters on your night table. You sat down with your back up against the headboard. You started rubbing your hand over Steve’s shoulder to his upper back. He turned his head to you with a smile on his face. You handed him his water, he mumbled out a thank you, then you turned to pick up your crackers.
When you had your crackers open on the bed in front of you, you felt Steve move closer to you.
“What do you have?” He was slowly stretching his neck back to see.
“A snack. I realized when I was down there that we haven’t eaten since lunch, but I didn’t want a full meal since it’s almost two in the morning.”
He reached over to grab at your crackers when you moved your leg to block him.
“Hey.”
“What are you doing?”
“I was going to grab a cracker, my loving wife just denied me.”
“Didn’t they teach you manners in your seal training?”
“Not exactly…”
“Well, I know that your parents must have.”
“I guess…”
“Then use them Mr. Grabby Hands.”
“I’m about to show you grabby hands if you don’t share.”
“What happened to “I’m too tired to move”.” You used your most whiny voice and placed the back of your hand on your forehead as you leaned back for dramatic effect.
What you didn’t expect was him to pull you to him and lay over you, pining you down.
“Get off of me.”
He wasn’t paying attention to you; he was currently pulling crackers out of the box. Once he had a sufficient amount, he rolled off of you.
“You’re a brat you know that.” He looked at you with a smirk on his face, as he chewed on one of the stolen crackers.
“Says the one who went full gorilla to get a few crackers, instead of asking nicely.”
The two of you just laughed at each other for a little bit. Once the laughter died down, you put the crackers on the nightstand and picked up the cookie. Then you looked over to Steve. He was smiling at you.
“What?”
“Can I please have some of your cookie? It looks amazing.” Now he was looking at you with puppy-dog eyes.
“Oh, now you know how to use your manners.”
You took the cookie and tried your best to break it in half. Unfortunately, one side was bigger than the other. You tried to hand the bigger portion to Steve, but he reached for the smaller one. You looked over at him with a smile on your face.
The two of you silently ate your cookie, once you both were done you laid down next to Steve. He pulled you closer to him, resting his head in the crook of you neck.
“What’s wrong?”
“Nothing.”
“Obviously, there’s something.” You start running your hand over his head, causing him to relax.
“I was just thinking.”
“About…” You waved your hand in a prompting motion.
“How lucky I am.”
You just rolled your eyes and giggled at him.
“How so?”
“I have an amazing life. I have a wonderful job, even though sometimes the hours are terrible it’s still great. I have an amazing team that makes it worth going into work. And last but certainly not least, I have a beautiful wife, who even though she denied me crackers, is still willing to share her cookie with me.”
He shifted so that he could look at you.
“You have made my life a hundred times better the day you bumped into me.”
“You bumped into me.”
“No, I’m pretty sure you bumped into me.”
“Nope, you bumped into me. I wasn’t even moving. How can I bump into if I wasn’t moving?”
“Well…” He took a few seconds to think about it. “Huh… you were just standing there.”
“You’re such a dork.” You just laughed at him.
“Yeah, but you still married me anyway.”
“I did… To be completely honest, it was because I knew you were the one after you gave me the biggest piece of cake at your birthday party.”
“Oh, so the cake sealed the deal for you.”
“Yes.” You said it with no hesitation.
“Wow, and here I thought it was my devilish good looks and my charming personality.”
“Nah, I’m more of a cake and sarcasm kind of gal.”
You just smiled at him. He on the other hand had a smirk on his face. He moved his hand to the side of your face.
“You’re lucky I love you.” Then he lowered himself to kiss you.
“I love you too.” You pulled him back into another kiss.
“We should go to bed; we only have a few hours before we need to be back at work.” He was still hovering over you.
“Well then you need to get off of me.”
He wrapped his arms around your waist, rolling over slightly binging you with him.
“Goodnight brat.”
“Goodnight gorilla.”
Not long after this, the both of you were asleep only to be woken up by the annoying noise of your alarm clocks hours later.

“Why on this beautiful earth are you leaving me?” I questioned Steve sleepy as he moved off the bed. He chuckled lightly before answering. “Well, beautiful it's 3:30 PM and I'm hungry.”
“Mmm, okay. Make me something? I'll love you forever if you do.” I said blowing him a kiss. “You wouldn't know what to do if I wasn't here.” he laughed walking out the door. I might have started at his bad, but hey, who wouldn't?
I tried to go back to sleep but I couldn’t I was hungry now. I moved Eddie’s big head off of my stomach and got up. I walked down the hall that's when I heard Steve talking to someone.
“Hi, love,” I said to Steve as I kissed his cheek. I turned to see it was Danny, Steve’s partner. He looked at me as if I was a ghost. I couldn't blame him.
“You are Danny, right?” I asked grabbing my cut of morning juice, Steve fixed it for me.
“Yeah, yeah I am. Who are you?” he said confused.
“I'm Steve’s partner, Y/n,” I said shaking his hand. “Nice to meet you,” he said smiling.
“So, the big bad no-lover Steve McGarrett has a lover!?” Danny practically screamed. Steve passed him an annoyed look.
“Yes. Now shut it.” He said kissing my head. “So, what are you doing here Danny?” I question as Steve handed me my favorite breakfast, Danny looked down. “I’m sorry to break up y’all’s Saturday, but we have a case.”
Steve let out an annoyed huff. “Sorry love.” He said kissing me. “But I promise I’ll make it up to you.” He hugged me.
“I’ll be okay. Me and Eddie will watch some tv. Don’t worry.” I said kissing his cheek. He walked to his room to change.
“Sorry to mess your day up,” Danny said. I shook my head. “It’s okay, I knew what I was getting into. Just try not to let him do stupid stuff,” I said laughing.
Danny laughed and shook his head. “I’ll try,” Steve yelled for Danny to get his ass up and a quick I love you to me.

Redemption
Shock to the System
Los Angeles, California
Monday, September 20th, 2010
The day had been long.  Inordinately long.  A hostage situation went sideways, SWAT was called in and LAPD’s finest had to do whatever was necessary to save the day.
And they did.  Just like always.
Now, as the sun began to set over the Los Angeles skyline, SWAT Lieutenant Samantha Devereaux was happy to be on her way home where she planned on curling up with her beloved pit bull, Red, and indulging in her guilty pleasure – reality TV.
Sam eased her Kawasaki Ninja into the driveway.  Waving across the street to Mrs. Miller, Sam removed her helmet, releasing her long, dark auburn ponytail.  She grabbed her mail and made her way up the front walk to her porch, where a package from Aunt Mae was waiting.  Sam smiled, wondering what Hawaiian goodies Mae had stuffed into the box this time.
Sam disengaged the security alarm as she was toppled sideways by her big baby, Red.  “How’s my big boy?  Did you behave today, huh?  Didn’t eat any more of my shoes, did you?”
Dropping her backpack by the front door, Sam began stripping the day off her 5’ 8” frame as she walked towards the kitchen to get Red his cookie.  Jacket thrown haphazardly on the coat rack, boots kicked off one by one by the couch, gun and badge deposited on the kitchen island.  As she reached up on top of the refrigerator to grab Red’s cookie jar, the house phone rang.
Sam furrowed her brow.  The only time the house phone rang was if her commander couldn’t wake her up at 2am with a SWAT call out.  Sam checked the caller ID and saw it was Mae.
“Hey, Mae!  I literally just walked in the door with your package.  I haven’t even had time to pop open my knife to open it,” Sam said jovially.
Silence.
“Mae?  You there?”  Butt dial, maybe, Sam thought.
Sobbing.  Sam could hear her aunt sobbing on the other end of the line and her blood ran cold.
“Mae!  What is it?  Are you alright?”
“Oh, Sam.  I can’t…I don’t know…I can’t under….” Mae choked.
“Aunt Mae, are you okay?  What’s going on?” Sam prodded.  “Talk to me.”
“Sweetie, it’s…. it’s John,” Mae blurted out.  “Sweetie, he’s, oh God, honey, he’s gone.  John’s dead.”
Sam’s knees buckled and as if in slow motion, she hit the floor, hard.  Time stopped.  No.  It couldn’t be John.  There had to be a mistake.
Struggling to find her voice, she asked, “How Mae?  When?”  She tried to will it to be a mistake but in her heart, she just…knew.  Too many years in the field taught her better.
“I don’t know the details, but from what the police officers who questioned me said, it sounds as though he may have surprised someone who broke into the house this afternoon.  They asked if I had heard or seen anything out of the ordinary over the past few days.  He was…he was shot.”  The last words came out in a whisper.
Sam fought to suppress the bile that rose in her throat when she heard the last word.
Shot.
John McGarrett was shot.
No.  That wasn’t possible.  How in the hell did John McGarrett, a decorated Vietnam veteran and cop, wind up shot and killed in his own home in broad day light?  This couldn’t be real.
And just like that, Sam went on autopilot and her training kicked in.  Not the SWAT training.  Her other training.  The training that told her that there was something far bigger going on than just a random break in.  The training that had her already running strategy and scenarios for Mae’s safety, intel to be gathered, calls to be made, favors to cash in.
“Mae?  I need you to listen to me, okay?”  Sam said, trying to keep the fear out of her voice.
“What?  That I need to pack a bag and go stay with Jim & Paula?  I know how your mind works, sweetie.”  Sam marveled at how in tune she and Mae remained, despite the miles between them.  “I already worked out what you would be thinking.  Sam, please, come home.  Be careful, but come home.”  The pleading in her aunt’s voice broke what was left of Sam’s heart.
“Don’t worry about me, Mae.  I’ll be fine, too.  I’ll send you my flight info as soon as I have it.  And Mae?”
“Yes, sweetie?”
“I love you.  You know that, right?” Sam asked.
“And I love you right back, my sweet girl,” Mae responded.
Sam hung up the phone and placed it on the floor.  Leaning against the refrigerator where she landed, dozens of thoughts and memories flooded Sam’s brain as she tried to process the fact that John McGarrett, her beloved mentor and surrogate father, was dead.
Despite sensing his person needed him, Red walked up to Sam and started to whimper to go outside.  She absently patted his head as she tried to work her way through what needed to be done.    Compartmentalization.  That was all Sam could focus on.
Shaking her head out of the fog, Sam got up, grabbed her gun and badge from the island and her phone and keys out of her backpack and hooked Red up to his leash.  She set the alarm and locked the door behind her as she took Red out for a quick walk.  As she did, she remained cognizant of her surroundings.  She kept an eye out for anything out of the ordinary.  For a day that seemed normal – as if a crazy day at LAPD SWAT was considered normal – Sam felt a shift of some sort.  She felt like, all of a sudden, she was back to her hypervigilant days as a CIA operative, constantly looking over her shoulder, assessing any impending threat, looking for strange cars or people between her house and the park down the street where Red liked to people watch.
As they completed their walk and made their way back to the house, Sam checked her phone for the first time since leaving headquarters.  There were several missed calls from Mae, two texts from Javi asking if she wanted company tonight, and one from Jazz, checking in before her date tonight.  Jazz.  That’s the priority call.  She typed out a quick response to Javi that she was tied up.  She didn’t feel like she owed him a full blown explanation.  Wickes would fill the team in tomorrow anyways.  She just couldn’t deal with him tonight.
After locking up and resetting her alarm, Sam made a beeline for the back of the house.  While her family room looked like any other family room, no one noticed that the room was shorter on the inside than it was on the outside.  A sliding bookshelf blocked off a small, secure space where Sam kept what could only be described as a small arsenal of weaponry, as well as multiple cell phones, laptops, tablets and boxes of paperwork – her own personal case notes that she kept on every CIA op, mission and case she ever worked on.  There was even a secure drawer full of passports, driver’s licenses and social security cards for a set of aliases she had set up for herself over the years, should the need to disappear ever arise.  She set herself up in her own personal SCIF – Secure Compartmented Information Facility.  And once Sam was comfortable, she pulled up a secure link and set up a video conference with her darling Jazz.
Within seconds the beautiful Amazonian was on her screen.
“Hey girl!”  Jazz’s larger than life personality filled the screen.  Barely paying attention to what was happening, Jazz started going on and on about her upcoming date for the evening.  Regaling Sam with information on her latest Mr. Possible Right, it took her a full minute to come up for air and really looked at Sam for the first time.  Jazz stopped dead in her tracks.
“Samantha?”
“Jasmine,” Sam said quietly, once again fighting the urge to break down.
“Honey girl, what happened?  What do you need?”  Jazz asked.
“I’m sorry to put you in this position, given that I’m no longer with the Company, but you and Matty are the only two people I can trust with this.” Sam said.
“Sam, you know I am here for you, no matter what.  Just hit me with it.”
Sam took a halting breath.  “John McGarrett was murdered in his home today.”
“Oh my God!” Jazz said quietly.  She knew how much John McGarrett meant to her dear friend.  The man had been a second father to her her entire life, especially after her parents died.  Jazz had always thought John saved Sam after her world crashed down on her in Munich.  This was going to tear Sam apart.  “I will get you everything, you know I will.”  Jazz began furiously working her technical magic.
“I know.  HPD would more than likely have had the scene.  Mae called me.  Jazz, you should have heard her.”  Sam rambled on for several minutes until…
“Fuck me sideways.”  Jazz mumbled.
“What?” Sam said cautiously as Jazz stared back at her through the screen.  “Jazz, what?”
“According to a Naval intelligence report, John McGarrett was on the phone with his son when he was shot and killed.”  Jazz’s eyes were watering as she was reading whatever file she had tapped into.
“You’re telling me that Steve heard his father…?”  The bile once again began to rise in Sam’s throat.  Oh God.  Wait, if Steve and John were on the phone…Sam’s mind was spinning.  “Does that mean they know who shot and killed John?” Sam asked.
“Yes,” Jazz said, pausing a moment too long, as she once again gazed at her friend through the screen.  Sam prompted her.
“Jazz, who killed John?”  Sam demanded.
Visibly choking on the words as a tear rolled down her cheek, Jazz said the one name Sam never expected to hear fall from her lips.
“Victor Hesse.”

Pairing: Steve McGarrett x Reader
Summary: Someone from Steve's past shows up unannounced needing his help.
Warnings: mentions of death and blood
MASTERLIST
-----
Steve jumped out of his sleep upon hearing the sound of his phone ringing on his nightstand. Y/N merely groaned in annoyance and rolled onto her stomach, pulling the duvet up to her chin.
"McGarrett." He hadn't bothered to check the caller ID before answering, his voice thick with sleep but all the sleepiness quickly vanished at the sound of her voice.
"Steve, I need your help. Do you mind letting me in, I'm on your front step?" He carefully threw the covers off of him and pulled up his pants and slipped on his t-shirt from the night before. Steve made sure not to make any loud sounds to wake his fiancé as he left the room and headed down to the front door.
"Catherine, what's going on?" He opened the door wider for his ex-girlfriend to enter and she immediately jumped to what brought her here.
“Three days ago I was doing surveillance on Akari Yen, he’s a member of the Yakuza here in Honolulu. He has his hands in sex trafficking, arms and ammunition, the full works.” Catherine was on edge, that much was obvious to Steve.
“I don’t know how my cover was blown but when I got home my entire place was turned upside down and those responsible left a message.” She tapped on her phone and showed him the photo of the message plastered on her wall.
Consider this a warning visit
“He knows that I’ve been looking into him and I’m close to busting his operation but I’m not backing down which is why I’m here Steve, I need your help.”
“Alright, let me get dressed first and then we could get going.”
“Who’s going where?” Y/N rubbed the sleep out of her eyes on her way down the steps, oblivious to the fact that they weren’t alone. Catherine felt part of her heart sank to her stomach at the fact that he had moved on despite the fact that she was the one that let him go.
“Y/N this is Catherine, Catherine, Y/N.” All traces of sleep left her body at the mention of his ex-girlfriend’s name. Catherine stuck her hand out to shake, to which Y/N awkwardly took a hold of.
“Nice to meet you.”
“Likewise.” Steve’s phone rang yet again breaking the silence that settled in the room.
“McGarrett….When?....Alright, Y/N will be there in a bit. No Danny, I’m taking a personal day, I’d love to tell you why but this is much better.” He hung up the phone and turned to face his fiance.
“Two bodies were found on Waimanalo Beach, Danny’s already on the scene.” Taking that as her cue, Y/N rushed up to their room to get ready to start the long day ahead. Catherine observed the way Steve followed after her; she didn’t consider him possibly having someone to keep his bed warm.
“Personal day, that’s what you’re calling it?”  Y/N hopped into the shower while he was brushing his teeth, Steve did talk about Catherine a couple times with Danny and Y/N did overhear bits and pieces of the woman during the earlier stages of their relationship; now flash forward two years she’s finally able to put a face to the name.
“She just needs my help with something, that’s all.”
“With what?”
“That I can’t say.”
“Mhmm.” Y/N left the conversation at that and finished up her shower.
Steve watched as she actively tried to keep her distance from him as they both got dressed for their day. Y/N clipped her badge onto the waistband of her jeans, holstered her weapon and slipped her phone into her pocket.
“See you later.” Steve managed to block her from walking out the door to give her a kiss, one that she didn’t respond to until Steve pulled her flush against him with his hand on the small of her back. He didn’t want either of them to leave the house like this.
“I love you and I’ll tell you everything when it’s finished.”
“Love you too, be safe.” Steve let her walk past him to get going.
While the pair were upstairs, Catherine took the time to look over at the many photos of the couple and the rest of the task force with a small smile etched onto her features but then her eyes landed on the sonogram in a frame.
Is she pregnant?
Y/N merely waved at the brunette on her way out the door and Catherine watched as she drove off.
“Let’s go.”
—---
“Alright, what do we know so far?”
“Lisa Henry, thirty five and Zack Humphries, forty were found by the lady over there. She said that she was on her morning jog on the beach when she came across the bodies.” Y/N walked alongside Danny to where the bodies were being processed. By the looks of it their throats were slit but there wasn’t any indication that they bled out on the beach.
“Their bodies were placed here, there would’ve been a large pool of blood.”
“Exactly my thought, Jerry gave us the couple’s last whereabouts, Chin and Kono are on their way there as we speak.”
“Okay, hopefully they find something that helps this case.”  The morning sun shone down on them but thanks to the sea breeze, it was bearable. Danny could tell that something was off about his friend.
“You uh want to talk about what’s bothering you?”
“Nothing’s bothering me Danny.”
“Okay, then could you tell me why my husband isn’t coming in today?”
“He’s helping his ex with a secretive operation today apparently.” Danny thought he misheard her but she went on.
“I finally met Catherine.”
“That must have been fun.”
—----
Steve and Catherine were currently sitting in his truck on the docks, watching the movements of Yen’s men.
“Y/N seems nice.”
“Yeah, let’s not do this.”
“I’m just saying, I’m happy for you.” Steve dropped his binoculars in his lap and looked over at her to gauge her facial expression but she was genuinely happy for him.
“Thank you and yes, she’s incredible.”
“I don’t mean to pry but I saw the uh- sonogram in the picture frame.” Steve’s face fell at the mention of the baby that they didn’t have the opportunity to meet.
“I’m sorry, I shouldn’t have brought it up to begin with.”
“No, no, it’s okay. That was the first and last scan that we ever got of the baby before…” Steve swallowed the lump in his throat as he went on.
“Long story short, she got shot on a case we were working and the stress her body went through led to a miscarriage.”
“Sorry to hear that. Well now you know not to have her in the field next time.”
“Tried that, she fought me on it.” There was movement again on the docks that gained his attention.
Steve and Y/N spent the rest of the day working their respective cases, every now and then he’d call to check in with her and the team. During one of the calls, Danny swiped the phone from her to dig in on his partner, asking him if he’s crazy for even agreeing to go ‘spread joy’ with Catherine for the day.
The homicide case was solved and it turns out the couple wasn’t who they appeared to be as they got caught up in something much bigger than them. Steve and Catherine were able to catch their guy once they followed the men from the docks to where he was staying up on the north coast.
Y/N’s phone pinged with a text from Steve asking her to meet him at home once she was done at the HQ. She quickly finished her report and bid her team goodnight on her way out; the drive home wasn’t a long one.
“Steve?” She didn’t receive a response but her eyes focused out the glass doors that lead to the ocean. Steve was standing by the chairs with two long boards in his hands. The cold air made her shiver as she walked towards him.
“Glad to see you in one piece.”
“I could say the same.” Steve planted a kiss on her lips and passed her a bottle of beer.
“You know you didn’t have to be so jealous this morning.”
“Me, jealous? I don’t get jealous, Steven.”
“Whatever you say.”
Steve sat down on his chair and pulled her down on his lap to talk about their day under the night stars with the crashing waves filling the short periods of silence in the background.

Danny tries to set Steve and you up on a date, but it doesn’t go exactly as planned.

Author’s note:  Idk about this, but I love Danno & his irritable good heart.
2.8k words | ♫ Playlist: maybe you (good night remix) - say lou lou
______________________
Danny Williams contorted his face in the way that was reserved for his disgust with some aspect of current humanity and it made you burst out laughing. You had agreed with the sentiment, but you could never take your sudden emotions and outwardly form them to be so entertaining. He turned to you with that look on his face that said ‘What is so amusing, babe? It’s the truth.’
The air was sweet in your lungs. It was a really lovely evening. The music playing was a great playlist, the karaoke goers weren't annoying, and the overall energy and ambiance in the place was sparkling, like a pretty firework you wanted to watch float down. You were having a good time, free from the things you still had to do, and anything else that could distract you from the present moment. Something still felt missing, though. Because someone was... McGarrett.
A faint vacantness was always around when he wasn’t. You tried not to think about it much, because you knew that overthinking things never yielded much of anything good. The longer his presence infiltrated and somehow contaminated your life, though, every time you happened to re-check in on that vague idea you avoided, it had managed to become more detailed and more difficult to push away. It was practically a sinkhole now, waiting to collapse and pull you in.
You saw the tiger man’s gait, through the crowd of people casually chatting and meandering about. It stuck out, it always did, like a predator in a forrest’s clearing. McGarrett always had a tenacity with each step. Like he had the most efficient path, straight to you and no one could stop or deviate him from getting there. If you were a bad guy, it was very bad news. But if you weren’t, it was reassuring in a way. Relief was filling in those dug out places in your heart. Suddenly, however, the safety you found burst like a C-4 charge just detonated. There was another person walking beside him. She had glowing skin, a cool dress that fit well, and openly gazed at the commander in a way that made you feel sick to witness.
It stung, the pain surprising even you. It was if you unexpectedly ran into a wall and got multiple fractures. But bones weren't the thing that were broken in this case. You swallowed the ache running up from your ribcage, realizing that you had fallen into what you purposefully had cordoned off. You couldn’t get out of the idea-- the idea that you could’ve been the one beside Steve, dressed all nice together, some picture perfect scene from a romcom. You couldn’t deny it anymore, acceptance had beaten you and won. This newfound understanding wasn’t freeing, though, it had trapped you. These feelings were stuck pulling at you with other new ones sprouting up, like quick climbing vines with thorns. There was nothing you could do about it. You cut open yourself, and hollowed everything out, shifting into damage control, as you plastered on a fake smile.
“What took you so long, brah?” Kamekona asked, “Being on time demonstrates to all those around you, you value theirs.”
“There was traffic, and I was meeting up with someone beforehand,” Steve explained as he gestured an introduction, working hard for the audience who hadn’t expected this part of the show, “Everyone, this is Lynn.”
The table gave a general welcome, with supervised yet still kind hellos and smiles. You didn’t think anyone else was as bothered by this surprise guest as you had been. But little did you know...
Danny had arranged this get together at the Sheraton, his second favored locale for controlled social settings aside from the Hilton. But, there was no new girlfriend for him, or new "friend" of Grace's, or anyone else that required mingling in a group. This was just supposed to be drinks, dinner, and maybe some karaoke. For the detective, this was merely subterfuge to finally get two of his friends to admit what they refused to ever address out loud. Though, the subtext in both of your staring said plenty, Danny was trying to enact some good will in lieu of his standard complaining. Annoyance took up a lot of minutes in William’s typical day, but tonight, he was aggravated. Aggravated because his idiot of a best friend brought a date. A date?! The schmuck who ignored him every other time he had suggested getting back out there before. A suggestion, Danny had stopped suggesting, ever since you joined the team. The detective knew him long enough to know how past derailed hurts left a deep wound despite Steve not talking about it. But Danny noticed how that wound slowly started to close up and heal after you entered the picture. Steven, however, was being a moron about this or in total denial. Probably both, Daniel ascertained to himself as he smoothed his hair back, hoping it’d magically work on his nerves too.
“Why don’t I get everyone some drinks, huh? Steve, come help me.” Danny ordered, giving McGarrett a look that on the surface seemed innocent enough, as he got up from the table.
“Steven, please,” the Jersey cop warned, and when he specifically started using formalities and manners, it was well known that underneath the pinstriped dress shirt, the detective 's heart was pumping enough oxygen to effectively yet calmly disfigure someone if they disobeyed.
Steve got up slowly, and a few steps away, Williams started pulling at the man’s rolled shirt sleeves, encouraging the SEAL to pick up the pace to chat in a less busy area of the bar, like an impatient parent embarrassed by their kid acting out in public.
“I,” the blonde man said, pointing to himself for emphasis, “Invited you to this outing– solely you,” then there was another now reversed point, “Why did you bring a plus one?”
McGarrett eyed him, forming a confused reply with his own expression lines, as to why Danny was immediately giving him a hard time doing exactly what he harped on for so long.
“You’re being serious right now? This isn't some fancy RSVP'd dinner reception, Danny. It's drinks at Rumfire. What's the big deal?”
“Actually, it was an RSVP, because I asked you earlier this week, and you responded. And you responded without telling me that you were bringing a date. Then I re-asked, and you didn’t tell me then either.”
“And you think I have control issues?”
“You do have control issues,” Danny calmly and instantly retorted, but his friend was now busy ordering at the bar.
Steve turned back around, “Just relax. Don’t make this a big deal,” he reassured, as his eyes darted away from your silhouette he found first at the table. McGarrett distracted himself again by gathering most of the beers. He nudged the ornery shorter man on the shoulder, “Get the other drinks you wanted me to help you with, alright?”
Danny sighed fairly loudly through his teeth, chomping down on the inside of his own lip, before ushering himself back to the table. When he sat down his face grew concerned at how easily the mai tai was flowing from your glass less than a minute later.
The strong liquid was just a distraction, a consolation prize for you being pissed off. You took a heavy swig of the drink again, bordering on some non-assuming villain plotting and stewing as things went on. Soon Lynn joyfully got up to try some karaoke alone, unbothered at her failed attempt to get Steve to join her. She seemed genuinely nice, which made it all the more worse. There wasn’t even an excuse to dislike her.
“So, am I supposed to be leaving still or what?” Kamekona asked Danny, trying to be subtle but failing to be.
Your eyebrow arched, at the same time Steve’s raised. Danny had a mild aneurysm, mumbling, “What? No, no,” over and over.
“Nah, hoalohas, I think I’m still gonna leave.”
Danny jumped up and left the table, trying to reel back the shrimp truck magnate of the North Shore to save face. Now, it was only you and McGarrett… watching Lynn pick her song on stage to sing. Except, Steven’s eyes were somewhere else.
You heard his voice, undeviating, cutting through everything, “How’s the mai tai?,” his tone resembling when he egged Danny about something.
“Good.” You said curtly, still not looking at Steve.
He was surprised at your reaction, “You okay?”
“Why wouldn’t I be?” You immediately replied again, finishing off what was left in your glass.
McGarrett didn’t answer, taking a sip of his own beer.
“This your first date with her?” You nodded in the direction of Lynn, who was now starting to sing, pretty well too, some old song you knew but you couldn't remember the title of.
“Second.” Steve corrected, quickly shifting his gaze back to you again.
You barely held back the sharp laugh that escaped your lips, mocking the reality you stupidly never asked about or thought could exist, “Cool,” you deadpanned.
“Are you jealous?” McGarrett abruptly asked, a smug smile faintly forming on his lips.
You scoffed, trying to overtly paralyze the nerve he hit, and the pain that went with it, as you went back to your drink forgetting it was now empty, “Why are you even asking me that?”
“Why don’t you just answer the question?” You could hear the stubborn amusement in his pauses, like he found a hold of something and wouldn’t let it go unless he won.
“Why don’t you?” You pushed back, turning to face him, a milder form of rage rising in your throat.
The hot air froze between you, everything else echoing out and away from the epicenter of you two. Your pairs of eyes were deadlocked, their dimly lit hues burning bright into one another's, setting off a fuse and the dejected unanswered what ifs behind them. Fears were smoldering, alongside the tension and boldness. The aggravation quickly melted away on your end. The anger and fading tipsiness unable to hide all the sadness you gathered in the loss you had now learned. Steve’s own eyes suddenly softened at the afflictions he saw surfacing in yours. You and McGarrett were still this weakening standoff, oblivious to what was happening around you. A certain bystander, however, couldn’t completely disregard the sight of your stares boring into each other's souls as she returned.
“How’d I do?” Lynn asked out loud.
“Huh, what?” Steve asked, confused, re-remembering his surroundings.
“You weren’t watching were you?” She gently questioned, already knowing the truth.
Steve awkwardly shifted in his seat, “I was, you uh, were really good! That’s a great song to pick!”
“What song was it?”
You got up from your seat, murmuring about grabbing another drink, your face hot from secondhand embarrassment as Lynn reluctantly sat back down next to McGarrett. On the way to the bar you ran into Danny who had been observing the whole exchange, and was now currently on route to intervene, more anxiousness flooding his hand movements.
“Where-- where are you going, Y/N?” Danny asked as you passed him. He turned on his heel to catch up to you.
“Daniel, don’t.” You sternly warned, trying to find a space in the crowding line at the bar.
“Hold on, wait,” Danny pleaded, catching your arm, “Talk to me, babe, please.”
You stopped and looked at your friend’s sincere eyes, and fretting forehead lines. You knew you didn’t need another drink. The onslaught of emotions was messing with you. Everything was brewing inside your head, like a rainstorm off the coast during monsoon season. You didn’t want to get stuck in the flood. You sighed, letting Danny be the voice of reason and pull you away to the outside patio.
You felt the cool breeze flow through your hair, tonight’s air no longer sweet, your throat still slightly burning. You didn’t say anything, crossing your arms, as you selected words in your head to prepare for the argument that stated you were fine.
“I can tell this surprise guest was sort of a shock to you too.” Danny quietly commented, fingers fidgeting against the railing as he spoke, “You wanna talk about it? I mean not that there’s something to talk about, but--”
“Danny,” you interrupted him, defeated, “I know you only wanted everyone to have a good time. I appreciate that. I appreciate you care. I’m just being weird about it.”
“Someone else is being stupid about it,” Danny blurted out under his breath, the irked truth disappearing into his sigh. He shook his head to himself.
“Hey, what happened to you guys?” Steve’s voice finding where you were.
“So, are we gonna order dinner now?” Steve asked as he approached, gesturing back towards inside. His nonchalant demeanor, especially in this case, was grating to both you and Daniel.
“Yeah, yeah, don’t start gnawing on the table legs. We’ll be there in a second,” Danny said with another parentified hand wave. He turned and knowingly shrugged to you when Steve turned back around to leave. You nodded to Danny and he placed a reassuring hand on your shoulder, waiting for you to move first. After a deep breath, you gave in, and headed back inside, Danny following beside you.
“Wait, what happened to Lynn?” Danny asked, processing the shift, and his increased blood pressure again, certain some blood vessel going to burst at this point.
“She, uh,” McGarrett scratched his chin, “decided to head home early,” he gradually admitted, his hand awkwardly illustrating the direction of her exit, before he crossed his own arms, inhaling a loud sniff through his nose.
“You’re a complete idiot, you know that right?,” Danny retorted after a quick beat, reaching his limit of exasperation at human interactions and having overall concern.
“For what?” McGarrett innocently questioned.
“Everything,” Danny said and shook his head again, hands gripping the back of the empty chair in front of him for some form of strength. He leaned forward and took a breath.
His voice was calm as he focused back to you and Steve, “I’m tired and done with this. Thank God everyone didn’t show up tonight or already left. And you, you’re paying the bill,” he pointed to McGarrett, before giving you a brief side hug, “I need to get away from here. Maybe I’ll run out into traffic. I don’t know. Goodnight to you insufferable people.”
“Aww, come on Danny,” Steve called out as the man left, “There’s still appetizers!”
His arms fell to his sides, before turning back to face you. You, like Danny, were still in some mode of processing everything that happened, just in a less dramatic or vocal way than the detective. You eyed Steve in his dark shirt, and jeans, how the fiery orange indoor lighting made his eyes a deeper green and his skin an even warmer shade. The next words from his lips as distinct as the five o’clock shadow on his jawline,
“I’m sorry.”
His voice was soft as he spoke the sentence, yet it maintained its brutality of honesty. You waited for him to continue.
“And, it’s not like I’d tell Danny this, but he’s right. I am an idiot.”
“For what?” You mirrored his prior phrase, your own voice uncertain with the feelings you were still trying to tie down.
“Well for starters, tonight,” he paused, before adding, “And for not asking this sooner, would you like to have dinner with me?” His lips formed a cautious smile.
“Yes,” you replied, your lips unable to hide your own grin, before continuing, “What else?”
Steve chuckled as he pulled out a chair for you to sit down. You took a seat, then he sat next to you. His body was more relaxed, no longer concerned with any camouflage. You two ordered your dinner, but you weren't going to let it go that easily.
“I’m still waiting for an answer.” You noted, intrigued, propping your elbows atop the table to rest your chin. You tilted your head at Steve, as you waited for his response, confidently and earnestly looking at the commander without hesitation or pretense.
A dorky yet completely charming smile spread across Steve’s face, as he raised his eyebrows, thinking, the warrior man’s eyes glinting in a way you hadn’t seen all night.
“For not doing this a long time ago,” he said, before he swiftly ducked his head and gently pressed his lips to yours. An unanticipated dreamy haze hitting you like a wave, despite the simple kiss. The restaurant busyness and room noise drifted away. You slowly opened your eyes, McGarrett’s ardent and proud expression encircling you. Reality filling in for what a related idea’s gaping hole had left you with. You could care less who was even around. The previous mess inside your chest was gone. Damn that tenacity, it carried through everything.

A little McGarrett imagine bc that one scene in ep 8.6 makes me giggle every time…
—————
“So, uh,” Steve starts, reaching around you to snag a grape off of the bunch you’re running under the water, “I had a visitor at work today. Well, a shadow, really.”
You pop a grape into your mouth and busy yourself with chewing, managing to get out a, “Mm?”
“Yeah,” Steve affirms your understated question, wrapping his arms around your waist and resting his chin against your shoulder. His hulking form dwarfs yours and you instantly melt into his chest. “A stress management consultant,” he clarifies further. “Evidently our friends think I’m gonna stress myself to death.”
You level him with a glare before returning your attention to the fruit, shuffling your connected bodies to the cabinets and pulling down a bowl before tossing them in. “Not funny, Steven. They’re right to be worried.”
“I knew you were in on it,” he murmurs into your neck, pressing gentle kisses along your rapidly heating skin.
With a hum, you respond, “I plead the fifth, Commander.” You hold a grape up over your shoulder and feel Steve’s lips draw it from your grip.
“She actually gave me some great info,” he admits after chewing and swallowing your offer. His hands shift to your hips and slip between the fabric of your T-shirt and shorts, his fingers kneading random patterns into your skin.
Distracted by his touch, you let your head fall back against his shoulder and entertain, “Oh yeah?”
“Yeah,” he replies, his husky voice right by your ear sending an excited thrill down your spine, his lips still firmly attached to your neck. “Did you know that sex is a great stress relief?”
“Steve,” you growl playfully, turning in his arms and pushing on his chest. “I told you I’ve got work to finish tonight! I just came in here ‘cause I was hungry.”
“Oh, me too, baby,” he counters suggestively, one eyebrow raised as he fixes you with a predatory grin.
With one finger pointed in an utterly non-threatening fashion, you retreat towards the stairs and warn, “Don’t you dare, McGarrett.”
“Woah,” Steve feints holding his heart, a look of pain contorting his annoyingly handsome features. “I can feel it getting to me.”
“Babe!”
“So stressed,” he fake coughs, taking lumbering steps toward you with a gleam in his eyes. “Can’t- hold on- much-” He catches up to you with one more long stride, tossing you over his shoulder as you squeal in protest.
“You’re a menace, Steven Jack McGarrett,” you howl, giving his backside a firm smack as he runs up the stairs with his precious cargo.
“You’re doing a public service,” your smartass declares, returning the favor with the palm of one of his much larger hands. “This is for the good of Hawaii!”

You make me happy
Pairing: Steve Mcgarrett x Latina!reader
Summary: Meeting your mom would be the last piece to complete the happiness you were currently feeling. You knew you mom was going to love Steve, even if he was worried about how the interaction would go. However, seeing it happen made you find a sense of comfort you needed.
Tumblr media
As you lovingly placed a hand on your baby bump, Steve stayed close by, gently supporting you with a comforting touch on your lower back. In the midst of the bustling crowd, a hint of nervousness fluttered in your stomach as you eagerly searched for the two cherished faces, long absent from your life. "Mija!" As you heard the loving Spanish accent, you couldn't help but turn away from Steve and divert your attention towards the older woman. Her black hair, now showing hints of gray, framed her face in soft curls. With a sweet smile that brought back fond memories, she hurried over to you, followed closely by your brother, whose face was also beaming with happiness. With enthusiasm, she hurried towards you. Your brother effortlessly rolled the luggage behind him while your mother wasted no time in enveloping you in a warm embrace. You couldn't help but smile as her arms wrapped around your neck and she showered your face with kisses. As her lips touched your face, you couldn't help but scrunch your nose, knowing how much she had longed for this moment.
"Mama," You wrapped your arms around her, rubbing her back as you kissed her cheek. "¿Cómo estás? ¿Cómo estuvo tu vuelo? (how are you? how was your flight?)" As you shifted your gaze, a subtle movement at the edge of your vision captured your attention. Your eyes landed on your brother. To your surprise, he warmly embraced Steve, and you couldn't help but smile. It was evident that a unique bond existed between them, forged through their shared experiences as Navy SEALs.
"Estoy bien, chula. El vuelo no estuvo mal. (I'm fine, beautiful. The flight wasn't bad.)" She couldn't help but shift her gaze towards the bump between you, and gently placed her hand over it. A small smile formed on her face, and a glimmer of excitement sparkled in her eyes. Deep down, she was aware of your pregnancy, but witnessing it firsthand served as a gentle reminder of the beautiful reality unfolding before her. "¡Voy a ser abuela! (I'm gonna be a grandma!)" She gushed with excitement. "¡Mijo, ven mira! (Son, come look.)" As she guided your brother over, he playfully rolled his eyes, but there was a glimmer of excitement in his gaze as he quickly planted a kiss on your cheek.
"Hey, short stack." As your mom gently placed his hand over your baby bump, he gave you a warm greeting. His eyes briefly glanced down at his hand before meeting yours once again. "Five months, right?"
"Right." You placed a hand on his arm. Your brother knew how excited you were to have this baby. How life in Hawai'i was everything you wished and how his best man helped you adjust to life. You knew your brother wasn't happy about your relationship with Steve the first time he came to see your after a year and half of living here. In fact, he almost fought Steve when he saw you come outside in one of Steve's shirts that fitted you like a dress. It took a lot of convincing before your brother to warm up to the idea. "Mami," You reached out for your boyfriend. "I want to introduce to you my boyfriend." Your mom followed your gaze to the man who stood next to you. You watched as she took him in. "This is Steve Mcgarrett."
"Ma'am, it's an honor having you here." Steve held a hand out to her. Your mom-- on the other hand-- just pulled him into a hug that caught him off guard. You and your brother shared a laugh.
"¿Mija, cómo digo, es un placer conocerte? (daughter, how do i say it is nice to meet you?)" She pulled back from the hug as she looked at you. She moved her hands to grab him and Steve glanced over at you.
"Nice to meet you." You responded back. A thing about your mother was that she could understand English perfectly, her issue was speaking it. She struggled with certain works and she had a very thick accent when she spoke English. Something you did warn Steve about.
"Eh," She turned to look at him. "Nice to meet you," My brother and I gave each other a look. "Ehteben. (steven)" And then there it was. You smiled as you brother did his best not to laugh. Steve just smiled at your mom but you could see it in his eyes that he found her accent endearing. "¿Lo dije bien?" She looked over at you and your brother and you guys just nodded.
"This is for you." Steve placed the lei around your mom and she gasped. She commented on how the flowers were pretty and how he didn't have to. Steve just nodded but glanced over at you for help, unsure what your mom had said. You just mouthed thank you in which he replied with, "It's no issue at all."
``````
Your mom insisted on cooking and having the rest of Steve's team over. She was in the kitchen, your brother forced to help her since she refused to let you do anything. Steve sat next to you. His arm over your shoulder as you snuggled into his side. "Your mom makes me question if I even learned anything during the three years we've dated." You let out an amused snort.
"Mi Amado, (my beloved)" You moved a bit to look up at him. "You have to remember that when I speak Spanish to you, I don't speak it as fast. My mom speaks it with a natural flow that makes it seem fast for you." You placed a hand on his thigh. "Besides, you're learning and that's all that matters." He was going to say more but the door opened and in came the team. "Hello!" You pushed yourself up, using the support of Steve, and hugged each person. "I'm sorry that this was last minute, my mom was very insistent that she cook for you all today." Danny waved you off. "La familia no es sólo quienes son de tu sangre, sino son los que nunca nos abandonan." A quote your mom lived by.
"Family is not only those who are of your blood but are those who never leave us." You said again but this time in English.
"I love your mom already." Danny handed Steve a case of beer.
"Well let me go a head and introduce you guys to my mom and brother." You motioned for them to follow behind you. "Also, I hope you guys are ready to try authentic Mexican food and take gain a couple pounds in the process." You teased but actually meant the part of gaining some weight. You already knew your mom was going to feed them to the point where they might end up in a food coma. "Mami. Mateo." Your mom and brother turned around. "I would like you guys to meet the rest of the team." As you introduced them, you weren't surprised that they had remembered your brother Mateo. Your mom on the other hand made sure to greet them all with a hug and a kiss on each cheek. She also insisted that they call her mom. None of them argued with her as she did her best to talk to them.
``````
Just like that dinner was a hit. Everyone loved the food, Steve and a few others almost died on the salsa your mom made. You-- on the other hand-- didn't realize how much you had missed and craved her food. It had hit a spot and satisfied all the cravings you had. You sat out on the beach with everyone, your eyes looked around and landed on Steve who stood on the deck with your mom. Your eyes met, and he playfully winked at you, adding a delightful touch to the evening. Just as you were lost in that moment, Kono called out your name, capturing your attention once again.
Steve had gone in to get some more beers when your mom stopped him. "Mijo," Steve hummed in response as he looked at your mom. "Yo sé que no me vas entender, pero gracias por amar a mi hija. Por ser su roca y apoyo. Puedo ver en tus ojos la forma en que la amas tanto. (I know you won't understand me, but thank you for loving my daughter. For being your rock and support. I can see in your eyes the way you love her so much.)" She gently reached up and tenderly cupped his face, as Steve kindly bent his knees to make it more convenient for her. Confusion furrowed his brow as he struggled to comprehend every word she was saying. Despite the language barrier, he sensed an unmistakable warmth in her words. Tears welled up in her eyes, yet she continued to smile at him, displaying a tender expression in her gaze. "Puedo estar en paz sabiendo que ella está con un hombre que haría cualquier cosa por ella. Gracias. (I can be at peace knowing that she is with a man who would do anything for her. Thank you.)" He nodded, not knowing what else to do.
"Mami," Your voice caused Steve to glance at you. He could see your amusement as you neared. "¿Qué haces con mi novio? (What are you doing to my boyfriend?)" With a playful smirk in your voice, you stood by his side. Your mom affectionately planted a quick kiss on Steve's forehead before allowing him to stand tall. You affectionately placed an arm around him, looking at your mom. There was a happiness in her eyes, and you sensed that it was because she saw you at your happiest, especially since your dad passed away a decade ago.
"Nada, mija. (Nothing, daughter)" She grabbed your free hand in one of hers and took Steve's in her other one before bring them both together. "Estoy muy feliz por ti y agradecida. Agradecida de que me hayas bendecido con la oportunidad de ser abuela. (I am just happy for you and grateful. Grateful that you have given me this opputonity to be a grandma.)" She kisses the back of both your hands as she holds it with such care. "Le pido a dios que te mantenga en buenas manos y te bendiga con lo mejor. (I pray to God that he keeps you in good hands and blesses you with the best.)" You smiled softly at her, the stinging sensation of tears in your eyes as you tried your best not to cry.
"Gracias Mami. (thank you mom)" As you leaned in to kiss her cheek, she graced you with a final smile before joining the rest of the group. Your gaze shifted upward towards Steve, who gently brushed your cheeks. In that moment, tears had already welled up and begun to trickle down from your eyes.
"What she say?" He asked softly as you hugged him. You chin resting on his chest as you look up at him.
"She is thankful that you knocked me up." You playfully teased, eliciting a gentle chuckle from Steve that reverberated warmly in his chest. Affectionately, he brushed a few strands of hair behind your ear, and then tenderly rested his hand underneath it. "But she is glad that she knowns I am in good hands and that I'm happy." His thumb gently rubs your the apple of your cheeks. "That you make me happy and prays for the best to come and that we stay safe."
"Guess it's safe to say she likes me." He lowered his lips on to yours. Deep down, he felt a subtle nervousness creep in as he thought about meeting your mom for the first time. Despite his efforts to appear calm, you could tell how much he cared by the way he eagerly assisted you in preparing for the meeting. He simply wanted to make a great first impression and ensure that everything went smoothly.
"She adores you." You closed the space between you, kissing him softly. His lips moved against yours, and you felt him pull you closer. Or as close as he could with your baby bump between you. "You make me happy and that's all she truly cares about." You gave him another kiss. "But if she found out how reckless you are, she might have a heart attack," You felt him smirk against your lips.
"Well, I guess it'll be our little secret then." As his lips gently met yours, a playful spark flickered in his eyes. His hand tenderly brushed down your neck, applying a hint of pressure. It caused you to bite your lower lip in delight, a soft hum of pleasure escaping your lips. The mischievous glint in his eyes made the moment all the more exciting.

In celebration of closing a hard case the team decided to go out and celebrate at any place that Kono picks since she’s the one that fired the final shot. Kono picked a nice club not far from where Steve and I live. Now I’m not part of the team but as Steve’s girlfriend of three years I’m considered ohana, so I was automatically invited. Danny claimed it was so he didn’t have to listen to Steve bitching about how much better it would be with me there, but everyone knew it was because he hadn’t seen me in a couple weeks due to the case and a visit to the mainland to take care of my sick parents.
Now that the case was closed and my parents were healthy I was ready to spend time with my friends but more specifically my boyfriend. Due to my parents and the case, mostly the case, Steve and I have had little to no alone time in the last month. As a couple that went from having sex at least six times a week to having absolutely no contact beyond cuddling and kissing was absolute torture, for both of us. So, I’ve got a plan and I know just how to get what I want, especially since we’re going to be at a nightclub, I had some time to get ready since I was meeting everyone there and what’s better than being fashionably late.
Steve’s POV
I sat at the booth in the corner at the nightclub taking a sip of my whiskey before Danny looked at me and asked, “Hey, Steve, where’s you better half?”
I checked my watch and shrugged before replying, “No idea, but knowing Y/N she’s going to be fashionably late to ‘make an entrance’” as I said make an entrance I lifted my hands and made quotation marks earning a laugh from everybody.
A couple minutes later I look up as I hear Grover whistle I looked at him confused, “What?”
He looked at me with a sly grin, “She did more than make an entrance.”
With that I turn around to see Y/N walking towards us. Dear God is she trying to kill me? She was wearing a skin tight red dress that dipped down just enough to show her breasts and high enough to leave nothing to the imagination paired with a pair of black thigh high laced heels, the ones she knew drove me crazy.
When she reached us she slid into my lap and started talking to Danny all the while she kept shifting on my lap causing me to grab her thigh to try and stop her and to keep me from groaning. After a couple minutes she met eyes with Kono who was at the bar and slid off my lap and kissing my cheek before walking to Kono swaying her hips the whole way.
When she was out of earshot, which wasn’t very far in this club, Danny looked at me before saying, “If I didn’t know any better I would think she want’s something from you.” At that Lou laughed before saying, “Oh yeah, she definitely want’s something.”
I tried to hide how flustered I was but Danny spoke up, “Be honest Steve when was the last time you two…well….ya know….did the dirty?”
I rolled my eyes before answering, “Sex Danny just say sex we aren’t in middles school and why the hell do you think I’d tell you that?”
Him, Lou, and Chin shared a look before Lou said, “Steve buddy no offense but that woman wants you in a bad way and you best believe she’s gonna get it, but with the way she’s dressed, you are in for a whole lot of suffering and keep an eye on her because something tells me she has got a plan. Woman always have a plan.”
Chin and Danny nodded in agreement as I watched Kono pull Y/N on the dance floor as Y/N smirked at me and winked over her shoulder and I knew Lou was right, and I had a suspicion this was only the beginning.
Y/N’s POV
When I got there I could already see it was working, his eyes said it all. To further my plan I sat in his lap and talked to the guys of the team while shifting on Steve’s lap to find a comfortable position when in reality I was comfortable I just wanted to make him more turned on than he already is, and I can tell it’s working. A couple minutes later I look up and see Kono motioning me over so I excuse myself leaving a kiss on Steve’s cheek before swaying my hips the whole way to Kono.
I get to Kono and she smiles before saying, “Girl you look hot as hell but I have a feeling it’s for a certain man’s attention. So, spill what’s the plan and how can I help?”
I laugh before answering, “You know me too well. The plan is simple, turn Steve on and get railed. It’s working but he’s not as worked up as I want him to be.”
She chuckles before smirking as she got an idea, “I have an idea, dance.”
I look at her confused before asking, “What on earth does dancing have to do with this?”
“No, Y/N/N when I say dance I mean dance. Dance like a horny single at a club looking for a hookup, get the guys swarming you and Prince Charming over there will be swooping you away and giving you exactly what you want, you know he’s got a jealous streak the size of Texas.”
I laugh nodding my head and agreeing before she’s pulling me to the dance floor. On the way to the dance floor I throw a smirk and a wink at my boyfriend.
Once on the dance floor I start dancing, I’m running my hands up me body, swaying my hips, and running my hands through my hair. I’m pretty much dancing like I imagine a stripper would. I look towards Steve to see him watching me like a hawk watching its prey.
Steve’s POV
As I watched Y/N dance I was getting turned on more and more by the second and the jealousy was bubbling over as I watched 98% of the males there staring at her hips and chest.
I was startled out of my glaring by Danny, “So, when exactly are you going to stop her? Because the more she dances the more the guys are going to move in.”
I closed my eyes and looked at Danny before saying, “I’m not going to. She wants to play a game and she wants me to cave first so I’m going to sit here until she caves and as for the guys she’ll kick them to the curb before they get any ideas.”
I took a sip of my drink when Danny sat up straighter, “You sure about that?”
I furrowed my eyebrows in anger and jealousy as I followed Danny’s gaze to see that Y/N had moved to the bar to get a drink and she was laughing and talking to a guy that was making very obvious advances. I slammed my glass down with a loud thud before clenching my jaw.
Danny’s POV
When I saw Y/N walk in I knew exactly what she was after. It didn’t take a genius, they’ve been so busy for the last month that they didn’t have time for each other and her attitude and body language said she wanted Steve’s undivided attention and by god she was putting him through hell to get it.
I watched as Steve clenched his jaw and I leaned over to whisper to Chin and Lou, “He is definitely going to cave first.”
They nodded in agreement before Chin spoke up, “Oh yeah, she knows exactly what she’s doing and it’s driving him nuts, not to mention his stubbornness making him suffer more.”
We all nodded again before Lou spoke up this time, “I have never seen a woman that determined to get a man’s attention that was already there’s. Heck Renee hasn’t looked at me like that in years.”
We all chuckled but stopped as we watched the last straw of Steve’s sanity get blown to the wind. Instead of shutting the guy down Y/N kept up the act throwing glances our way to make sure Steve was paying attention, when she was sure he was watching she put her arm on the guys bicep and threw her head back in laughter.
I glanced at Steve and jumped when he slammed his drink down harder than before with his gaze locked on Y/N before pushing himself up and walking towards her making it clear he was done with it.
We all laughed before I said, “He definitely caved.”
Chin and Lou laughed before Chin said, “And he definitely isn’t coming back over here tonight.”
Y/N’s POV
When I stopped dancing and went to get a drink a man with dirty blonde hair and brown eyes walked up and started flirting with me. I was getting ready to tell him to back off but I glanced at Steve and realized this would be what broke his resolve so I flirted back and sure enough Steve’s making his way through the crowded room heading straight for us, and he looks pissed.
When he got to us he grabbed my waist and pulled me into his front possessively. As he did so I could feel the prominent bulge poking into my lower back causing me to bite my lip to prevent myself from moaning. When I focused back on the conversation between my boyfriend and the stranger I had learned was named, Brad, I could tell Brad was terrified of Steve and Steve was pissed at Brad…and me.
After Brad ran away scared for his life Steve spun me around to face him and I rubbed my legs together when his angry and horny eyes glare into mine as he said lowly, “What the hell do you think you were doing?”
I looked at him innocently before smoothing out his button up shirt and fixing his color while saying, “I don’t know what you’re talking about, commander.”
I heard a low groan and felt his hands dig into my hips before pulling me impossibly closer before whispering in my ear rather aggressively, “I swear to God Y/N if you ever do something like this again I’ll make sure you can’t walk for a week.”
I stand on my tiptoes and pull his head down a little so I could whisper in his ear, “Baby, that’s the whole point.” He growled lowly before I continued, “How about you take me home and I’ll give you something for your troubles. Would you like that?” Instead of answering he grabbed my arm and pulled me out the door while I all but pranced behind him.
When we got to Steve’s truck he opened my door and all but threw me in before slamming the door and getting in the drivers seat and speeding to our house.
The whole five minute drive to the house neither one of us made a single sound both of us thinking about what was to come.
As soon as we got home I ran upstairs to our en suite to complete phase two of my plan. Steve was fast to follow and I heard him pacing the floor before asking in a low gravelly voice, “What the hell are you doing now?”
I smirked as I adjusted the last piece of lace to keep my boobs in place before swinging the bathroom door open, “Just preparing you a little gift, you know, for all your troubles.”
I watched as his eyes raked up and down my body before he met my eyes with an expression I can only describe as turned on and surprised as his pupils were so blown they were black. He sat on the foot of the bed as walked towards him.
When I got in front of him I did a little twirl before asking, “Do you like it? I bought it on the mainland when my aunt and I went shopping. I saw it and thought you would like it.”
It was a wine red lingerie set with a strapless lace push up bra with lace going down my abdomen before ending right before my belly button and it was paired with a pair of underwear that was mostly straps except for the part covering my mound. I know red is his favorite on me so when I saw it I went right in the store and bought it….and a few other sets but he gets to see those at a later date.
He stared for a few more minutes before nodding and groaning out a yes. I smirked before walking up to him and standing between his legs, he grabbed my hips and looked me in the eyes while I straddled his lap. Once I was situated on his lap I put one hand on his shoulder while the other one carded it’s way through his hair before playing with his hair in the back all the while he stared at me intently trying to guess my next move. After a couple seconds I tilted my head up a little to meet his lips and pulling him into a kiss. Before he got a chance to deepen it I pulled away a little to kiss along his jaw before leaving a hickey on the corner of his jaw before kissing my way down his neck leaving three more hickeys that he would be displaying for all to see tomorrow. When I was happy with my marks I kissed my way up his neck until I got to his ear where I whispered, “I’m ready whenever you are commander.”
As soon as the words left my mouth he stood up taking me with him. When I stood in front of him I grabbed his shirt before looking at him with eager eyes he nodded his head telling me it was okay before I untucked the dark blue material before running my hands up his torso until I reached the first button that was buttoned. As each new piece of skin was revealed I got more excited, when I finally unbuttoned the last button I pushed his shirt off before stepping back, “Damn it’s not fair.” He looked at me and smiled before asking, “What’s not baby?” I threw him a look before answering, “You, you’re so goddamn sexy and you don’t even try. I mean, you have an eight back and biceps that are so big I can’t wrap my hand around and don’t get me started on what you have going on below the belt.”
He smirked again before pulling my in by the hips, “I’m sorry, what was the last part you said?”
I blushed bright red as I realized what I said, I looked away so I didn’t look in to his teasing eyes. That didn’t last long as he grabbed my jaw and turned my head but he must have take pity on me as he said, “It’s alright baby you don’t have to repeat it and as for the sexy thing. You have no room to talk,” he took a step back before using the hand that had been cupping my face to motion at my body before continuing, “you’re so damn beautiful and sexy that no one could even try and compare to you and I’m lucky enough to call you mine.”
I blushed and shrugged my shoulders in disagreement at his statement but appreciative to say the least. He pulled me closer before whispering in my ear, “And when I say mine I mean mine, no one else’s. I’ve never been good at sharing and it’ll be over my dead body that another man lays his hands on you, and if I ever see you flirting with someone again I’ll fuck you so hard you won’t even remember your name. I don’t care what game you were playing but I can assure you if you try it again I won’t be as nice to the poor soul that flirts with you.”
I blush and rub my legs together at his possessiveness. Yes there’s a fine line between being possessive and being overly possessive but Steve is only possessive with guys that he doesn’t know or trust and that’s okay with me because Steve’s instincts on people are almost never wrong.
He steps away from me before motioning to the bed with his head without another thought I crawl into bed and lay on my back in the middle of the bed. Before he comes to me he walks to his side of the bed to the right of me before grabbing something out of his nightstand. I let out a whimper when I realize it’s his handcuffs. Shit. When he turns to me with a smirk I go to say something but he talks first, “Don’t even try to sweet talk your way out of it. It’s not going to work, I’m immune to it by now sweetheart.”
I groan before throwing my head back in the pillows as he gets on the bed and straddles my hips. When he’s steady above me he grabs my hands and raises them up to the bed frame and I feel the all too familiar cold metal circle my wrists as I hear the click of the handcuffs locking. I moan as he stretches out above me to reach the headboard and his belt clad waist is in front of my face. I don’t know what it is but seeing him in black cargo pants with a belt and no shirt just does something to me, and he knows it.
When he’s done and sitting back up he looks down at me smirking, “Babe, I didn’t even touch you.” I glare at him as he continues, “Ohhhh, never mind I forgot about what I have going on below the belt.”
I stick my tongue out before saying, “You suck.”
He smirks before saying, “Actually princess that’s what you do.” I blush as my eyes widen. Okay not gonna lie that was smooth as fuck and hot as fuck.
He chuckles a he gets off the bed to get rid of the rest of his clothes. He had already discarded his shoes and socks before getting on the bed respecting my threat of what happens when someone gets on my bed with shoes on.
I bite my lip as I watch him throw his belt to the side and unbutton and unzip his pants before throwing them to the side with his belt before making eye contact with me as he dropped his underwear. I pull my arms hearing the metal clink as he smirks at me. Dear god not being able to touch him is going to kill me, and he knows it. He knows how much I hate not being able to touch him it’s like my own personal hell.
When he resumes his position of straddling my hips he rubs his hands down my arms causing a shiver to run down my spine. When he reaches my arm pits he stops and I squirm before saying, “Steven, I swear to god, if you tickle me I’ll knee you in the balls.” And with that his hands resume their journey down my body. As he runs his hands down my body I moan as he runs his hands down my sides before slipping them under the hem of the red lace. When he brings his hands back out I arch my back as he goes to take it off. After a couple of minutes he curses before looking at me helplessly, asking, “How the hell do you get this thing off?” I chuckle as I instruct him on how to take it off. When the offensive material is off he chucks it across the room with a frustrated huff.
He looks back down at me before sliding down my legs to slip my underwear off when he had discarded them he leaned down and started kissing his way up leaving a few hickeys along the way causing me to moan. When he reached my neck he transitioned back and forth from sucking deep red marks into my neck and leaving sweet feather like kisses. When finished he pulled back and connected our lips into a heated kiss while his tongue fought for dominance easily winning. When he pulled back he smiled and muttered, “I love you so much.” I smile and rub my nose against his causing him to chuckle before I said, “I love you too, and I could show you just how much if you took the damned cuffs off.” He looked at me unimpressed before I sighed, “I didn’t figure that would work.” He cocked his head to the side as he pecked my before licking his way down my chest and nipping at my nipples before continuing down towards my core. I let out a surprised and pleasure filled scream and arched my back while pulling on the cuffs when his mouth latches onto my clit. I can feel him smirk against me as I continue to moan his name and pull at the damn cuffs. When he adds his fingers I squeeze my legs around his head as I moaned, “Steve! God please take these damn cuffs off!”
In response he nipped my clit before pulling away while still using his fingers, “Say you won’t flirt with another man again.” I moan out a no and then arch my back with a scream again as he bit my clit blurring the line on pain and pleasure before I screeched, “Okay! Okay! I promise!”
He smirks yet again while making eye contact before asking, “Promise what?”
I let out a pornographic moan as he hits my g-spot before panting, “Flirting, I promise I won’t flirt with another guy! I swear! Just please, take these off.” I pulled on the cuffs to emphasize what I meant and with a quick good girl and smooth moves the cuffs were quickly placed on the bedside table. As soon as my hands were free I grabbed his face and pulled him down into a heated kiss as he let out a surprised noise. I slide my right hand down to grab his shoulder while my left hand cups the back of his head and I wrap my legs around his waist and pulling his hips down with a whimper against his lips as I beg, “Please Steve, I need you.” He pulled himself out of my hold before ordering, “Hands and knees.” I quickly role onto my stomach before propping myself up on my hands and knees while shaking my ass. He slaps my butt before thrusting in with no warning causing my arms to give out and I moan into the pillow my face was squished in. As he went faster I moaned louder into the pillow before he pulled me up by my hair, “I want to hear you princess.” As if my body knew what he said another moan ripped through my throat as I threw my head back to rest on his shoulder. His left arm snaked around my front to hold me up while his right hand traveled down to play with my clit. I moaned out his name as my legs shook and I dug my nails into his arms successfully scratching him. He nipped my ear before saying, “Cum for me Y/N/N.” Seconds later I let out a pleasure filled scream and dug my nails in deeper as I hit my climax and I would have collapsed if it wasn’t for his arms holding me in place. Instead of slowing down he went faster as he chases his high. When he fell over the edge he effectively pushed me over again as a broken moan escapes my raw throat.
Once out highs have been ridden out he pulls out before laying me gently on the bed and then got a rag to clean us up. When he came back he cleaned me up before kissing the bruises forming on my wrists from pulling on the cuffs too hard. When he discarded the rag in the hamper he crawled in bed beside me and looked at me before smiling and saying, “You know, I meant it earlier, when I said I was lucky to have you.” I blush and snort as he tucks some of my hair behind my ear before pulling me closer, “I mean it Y/N. I don’t know how I got you but I want to spend the rest of my life with you. You’re the one for me, whether you believe it or not and I’m never going to let you go.”
I smiled before nuzzling his nose and saying, “That almost sounds like a proposal McGarrett.”
“It might be.”
I propped myself up on my elbow and looked down at him, “Really?”
He smiled before saying, “Well, that depends on the answer.”
I bent down and kissed him before whispering against his lip, “Yes. That’s my answer whether you ask now or next year. My answer will always be yes.”
He pulled me down into a hug before flipping us over so he was straddling my hips and reached over to his nightstand before pulling a wooden box out of his draw. I watched with wide eyes as he looked at it and then looked at me, “I was planning a romantic evening with wine and a nice dinner with a lot of candles for next week, but I think now might be a better time.”
I watch him open the box with my mouth agape as I see the beautiful diamond ring sitting on a simple silver band. I slid backwards just enough to sit up and looked closer at the ring, yes it was simple, but it was beautiful, exactly what I wanted. My heart was overflowing with a lot of different emotions as I looked at his happy yet nervous eyes with my tear filled eyes. I sniffle and grab his face, “I love it, and I would have said yes even if there was no ring.”
He smiled as I pulled back and handed him my left hand. When he slid the ring on my finger I shivered from both my emotions and the chill of the ring against my skin. Once the ring was in place he put the box back on the nightstand and before he fully turned around I threw myself onto him with a hug. With his unsteady position he fell backwards with me on top of him and moaned when I kissed him with love and passion. He held my hips as he watched me.
Steve’s POV
I smiled as I watched her look at the ring in the light of the lamp. The diamond wasn’t anything grand in fact it wasn’t much at all but the way she was looking at it made it look like she was holding the most priceless ring on her finger. When she broke her gaze from her ring her excited eyes looked at me with mischief surfacing to the top, “I still get the dinner right? Because I’ll give the ring back and wait until next week.”
I laughed as I went to take her ring off saying, “Alright well in that case…” I didn’t have time to finish as she slapped my hand away while glaring at me. I met her scowl with a smile earning a smile from her before she started laughing.
When we laid back down to go to sleep her laying on my left side all but laying on me with her head on my chest she looked up at me with innocent doe eyes, “We still get to have dinner right?” I tried not to laugh but she looked so hopeful I couldn’t help it I looked at her pouting lips before kissing her, “Yes baby, I’ll still make you dinner.” She smiled before snuggling closer into me and saying okay and before I know it I’m drifting off to sleep.
*In the Morning*
I woke up to a loud noise from downstairs followed by Y/N, “Gosh darn it Eddie look what you made me do!” I chuckled at her reluctance to cuss at Eddie claiming he could tell and she didn’t want to hurt his feelings. As I made my way downstairs and into the kitchen I see Y/N kneeling on the floor with her hair thrown up in a bun wearing the shirt I had been wearing last night. I leaned against the doorframe before asking, “So, what did he do this time?” She jumped a little before glaring at the floor and then back at me and I laughed realizing what happened. Through my laughing I spoke, “He knocked the cake on the floor and you’re this upset?”
She stood up to look at me before saying, “It wasn’t just a piece of cake Steve, it was the last piece of cake that Aunt Edna made! And now I have to wait until thanksgiving to get another one.” I tried not to laugh when she turned around and screeched at Eddie again, “EDDIE! STOP EATING MY CAKE!”
I watched as she stomped her foot, glaring at Eddie who was still licking the icing off the floor. I walked up to her and hugged her from behind placing my chin on her shoulder, “As much as I love watching my fiancé pout over cake I have to leave for work in half an hour.”
At my words she spun around forgetting about her precious cake with a beaming smile, “I like that.”
“Like what?”
She smiled again, “Being you fiancé and be called as such.”
I smile and hum as I pull her in before saying, “Yeah I do to but you know what I think sounds better?”
She tilted her head in question as I said, “Wife. I very much like that title on you better. How does that sound? Y/N McGarrett.”
She stood on her tiptoes and pulled me down to kiss me and then bounced back before giggling, “I like that too. Now my dearest husband you should get ready you have work in a little bit and your hair is a mess.”
I chuckled, “Darling even if my hair is a mess they’re going to be more focused on my neck and my arms than my hair.”
I watched as a blush spread across her cheeks and she apologized, “I’m sorry Steve.” I nuzzle my nose into her neck causing her to giggle and I kiss her neck before pulling back, “I don’t mind babe, it shows everyone I am happily taken. I just have to deal with Danny’s nagging all day but as long as I’m allowed to tell them about this,” as I say the last part of the sentence I run my finger over her engagement ring before continuing, “it will take the heat off of my marks.” She laughs before saying, “You can tell whoever you want on one condition.” I raise an eyebrow in question, “What’s that?” She turns to Eddie before a smile crawls on her face and I know what she wants, “No, babe, we’ve talked about this.”
“Come on Steve, pleaseeeee.” As she begs me she wraps her arms around my waist and rests her chin on my chest looking up at me with puppy eyes. I groan, “Okay, I’ll think about it,” she huffs hearing this response for the thousandth time both by me and her parents but I continue, “and I mean I’ll actually think about, I promise.” She smiles and bounces up and down in excitement at the thought of me saying yes and I know that she’s won, she’s going to get what she wants.
I peck her lips one more time before pulling away and heading back upstairs, “I gotta get ready for work and I promise I’ll have an answer by tonight.”
When I come back downstairs she’s kneeling on the floor talking to Eddie about personal boundaries using the time he interrupted us during a passionate night in our room as an example. I bend down and kiss her on the forehead before grabbing my keys and heading out the door, “Bye Y/N/N, love you!” I’m answered by a joyful, “Love you too, Stevie!”
*Time Skip* As I walk into headquarters and Danny, being the only one there, looks up and his jaw drops, “Holy shit!” I shrug my shoulders and walk into my office and log onto my laptop when my door is thrown open revealing a wide eyes Danny. I look up and roll my eyes, “Yes?”
“What the hell happened!?”
I smile, “What she wanted to happen, kind of.” I roll my sleeves up and start typing when Danny interrupts me, “OH MY GOD! IS SHE PART LION!?”
I smirk, “You should see her.”
“Yeahhh, no thanks I like my life.”
I laugh and smile as I continue typing until I look up and see Danny looking at me with narrowed eyes causing me to laugh, “What now Danny?”
“You’re both overly happy, more than any man after a night full of passionate sex, but also very deep in thought. So, please do enlighten me on what exactly happened last night.”
By this point he’s sitting in the chair across from my desk leaning forward eagerly waiting for me to give him details. I sigh before leaning back in my chair crossing my arms trying to look ticked off but I couldn’t fight the smile off of my face. Now Danny was really intrigued, “Oh come on Steve, spill it. God I’m spending to much time with Grace and her friends.” I lean forward, “I’d tell you Danno but there’s no fun in that.”
I watched as he purses his lips and thought about it and after about three minutes his eyes light up and he jumps up excitedly, “No! You didn’t! You did! Oh my God you did! And she said yes! OH MY GOD! YOU’RE GETTING MARRIED!”
I laugh before nodding, “Yes, Danny, I asked her to marry me and she said yes.”
“How did you ask her? Because if I recall you guys were at the verge of a war last night.”
“Well I didn’t really ask her, I told her how much she meant to me, she said it sounded like a proposal, I said it might be depending on her answer, she said yes and that she would say yes no matter when I asked, so I got the ring and gave it to her.”
“Wow real romantic what the hell were you thinking?”
“I don’t know Danny. Honestly it just felt right, it felt like all the pieces were in place and that it was the right time, I don’t know how to explain it.”
He smiled and said, “No, I do understand, I proposed to Rachel with a soda can so I know what it’s like for the time to be right.”
When he was done talking his smile slowly disappeared before he asked, “Then why were you staring at your laptop like you’re debating the pros and cons of murder?”
I sighed rubbing my face before turning my laptop around so Danny could see it and he burst out laughing, “You're finally caving. You’re finally going to get her a puppy.”
“No.”
He looked at me confused as I said, “I already bought him, two weeks ago, he was supposed to be picked up next week but I’m messaging the breeder about picking him up today.”
At that moment my laptop pinged as I looked at it I smiled before looking at Danny, “She said I can pick him up now, sooo, can I take your car?”
He groaned before saying, “I don’t have a say in it so yeah whatever let’s go pick up Leo.”
I laughed at the fact he used the name Y/N has had picked out for a puppy since she was five as I took the keys out of his hand and walked out the door with him close behind.

Leaving Breadcrumbs behind [11/?]
Author’s Note: Hello all, after ages I have come back to writing. I feel like my brain fog is lifting slowly but surely. I have made some life changes, like working out more but also I stopped taking my contraception. And holy shit, my mind and my body are changing. I cannot describe it another way than my brain fog lifting. And suddenly there are words flying out of my fingers again.
And while rereading this story I have realized that I switched the perspective at some point without realizing :D But it feels more natural like this. And let’s not talk about time lapses and where everyone ends up and if its realistic. I am in too deep to make it right :D
I hope the tag list is still up to date and I haven’t missed anyone. If so, please send me message.
It feels good and relaxing to write again. And I am in desperate need of a hobby again.
Anyway…
Enjoy.
Love,
Lis

“You stupid thing. What did you do?” he asks as he cups your face in his hands smiling at you and you immediately tear up.
“A lot. And it cost me a lot as well.” You cry, as he embraces you in his arms and you just cry.
You two stayed like that for a while. On the one side you are relieved that you have reached your brother and that he is alive. And he can walk, so he is not as bad in shape as you thought. On the other hand you cry even more about how you reached him in the first place.
He pulls back and cups your face in his hands again, wiping away the tears with his thumb.
“I can’t believe you are here.” He says and smiles at you. You smile back and also raise your hands to his head. You go through his hair and look into the eyes you have missed so much.
“I can’t believe you are alive.” You say, going over the beard that grew, indicating just how long he must be captured. But the mention of his being alive makes his face form a confused look.
“What do you mean alive?” he asks as he helps you stand up to your feet. You dust yourself off and take a look around the room. A small window and sand everywhere, but nothing else. Thick concrete walls surround you and a heavy and rusty metal door behind you. You focus on the person in front of you again and look him up and down. He still looks beaten and has aged a lot. He is thin and completely out of his SEAL shape. But he can stand and walk and talk and that is important.
“I thought you were dead. We all did. After we split on that mission… Even the Nacy pronounced you dead. We couldn’t find you, and believe me I tried everything I could. But there was no trace from you.” You say and send him a sad smile, suppressing the urge to cry again and fall in his arms. You need to focus. There will be enough time later to catch up…maybe.
“Really? That’s why I have been stuck all this time here?” he asks, realizing the impact of your words.
“Yes, I’m so sorry JJ. If I would have known you were still alive… I would have never stopped looking.” You answer, taking his hands into yours. He grabs them and looks at them.
“Were you married?” he asks, raising his eyebrows at you. You heart stops a beat at the word married.
“No…” you gulp, taking a deep, shaky breath. “But I was engaged until yesterday.” You whisper, looking at your hand and realizing what he saw…
The tan line where your ring used to be.
Back on Hawaii…
Whenever there is nothing to discuss and everyone is going after hints and trying to get information, all Steve does in look at the dot on the screen. The dot that resembles you. Somewhere deep in a jungle. Kono is scanning the area right now, trying to get pictures that are up to date. Joe is still trying to get someone from the Navy to HQ, getting more and more pissed and irritated. Chin, Danny and Lou left a while ago to check all relevant houses for more clues. Steve has a feeling though, that there is nothing more to find. What else could there be? He would love to be on his way there now, but the 48h are not over yet.
He took your engagement ring and put it on a necklace to wear. He wants to have it with him, to give it back to you, as soon as he can. All the clues you left and the fake death certificate are scattered on his desk. He can’t imagine, what you might be feeling, thinking that he is dead. Or maybe he can? He has basically lost you, too. Has not certainty if you survive and if he gets to you in time.
Steve is pulled out of his thoughts when his phone rings.
“McGarrett.”
“Steve, hi, here is Hawkeye.” Dr. Pierce answer.
“Hi Hawkeye, what can I do for you?” Steve asks, hoping there is anything helpful for your case.
“I remembered something. (Y/N) left me a password.”
“A password? For what?” Steve sits up straight in his chair.
“I don’t know. She just wrote down a word in her file. I have no idea what it is for.”
“What’s the word?”
“Waterloo.”
As Steve hears that word, there is slight twitch on his lips to a smile. Waterloo is an insider between the two of you. It’s not about the word or history, but actually about the song from ABBA. You always called Steve your waterloo.
“Thank you, Hawkeye.” Steve says softly,
“Do you know what it could be for?”
“No, but we will figure it out.”
“Okay, good luck then.” Hawkeye says and both say their goodbyes.
