Things I've seen tumblr memeing about James Somerton doing à la "How did no one see how bigoted he was!" as if those things haven't been a significant part of tumblr culture for over a decade :
Presenting untrue and bordering on conspiratorial versions of (queer or otherwise marginalised) history without any sources
Completely disregarding and disrespecting any expertise on socio-cultural topics/humanities and distrusting academics and historians (incl. acting as if no academics or historians could be queer or marginalised)
Downplaying the role misogyny played in the historical oppression of queer women and concluding that queer men must have been more oppressed than queer women
Bi women are, at best, not as queer as "real" queer ppl, and at worst, simply equivalent to straight women
Despite nominal trans inclusivity, transmasculine ppl are functionally women when convenient (combined with the above, bi transmascs are functionally straight women)
Despite nominal trans inclusivity (bis), shamelessly attacking, threatening and actively endangering any trans woman who questions them or smth they find important (often by unfairly presenting her as violent or as a threat)
Having absolutely fucking wild and reductive takes about ace ppl, the oppression they face and their place in the queer community
Stating that marriage equality is an assimilationist fight while completely ignoring its direct roots in the horrifying consequences of the AIDS crisis for partners of ppl who died of AIDS
Praising western media creators from the past for queer coding even under censure and in the same breath condemning current non western media creators for being homophobic bc their representation isn't explicit enough
Blaming China for all existing homophobic censoring in western media
Assuming all queer media would be better told by western creators and by western standards
Only out queer ppl get to tell queer stories
Heavily criticising almost all queer media created by women or ppl they see as such (see above points about trans ppl) or involving/starring a significant amount of women for any perceived or real amount of "problematicness", but fawning over and praising and negating criticism of queer media created by and starring mostly or even functionally exclusively men (even when it could be argued that, you know, not involving/seriously sidelining women is a pretty clear example of misogyny which should probably be considered "problematic")
And I'm probably forgetting stuff or there's stuff I have internalised myself and don't recognise as an issue
Like idk but I feel like the takeaway from Hbomberguy and Toddintheshadow's videos should maybe be "be aware of such patterns in your communities bc they definitely exist" and not "this guy is uniquely awful" and I feel like a lot of the discussion I've seen surrounding this has been severely failing at that. Most ppl who've spent any significant amount of time on tumblr prob either have internalised at least one of those thought patterns, have had to de-internalise them, or have had to be extremely vigilant to not internalise them (which is done by, you know, seeking out other sources, which also seemed like an important takeaway from the videos)

Somewhere Inside, by Laura and Lisa Ling; The World is Bigger Now, by Euna Lee
*This was written about two weeks before the current news about someone crossing the North Korean border broke.*
Awhile back, I watched a Nat Geo documentary about North Korea, where the journalist was Lisa Ling. I found the documentary interesting. I didn't know that she and her sister had written a book about the time that Laura spent in captivity. I was trying to find something to read to put between the entries of the No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency, just so I don’t end up with three weeks straight of writing about the sane books, and I found Somewhere Inside on the random page in Libby.
I find most unknown things to be fascinating and North Korea is no exception. I often find myself thinking, as I do mundane things, that most people, all around the world do the same things, no matter the culture.
I get up in the morning, get dressed and star my day. People all over do variations on the samething
The experience in North Korea is so different from anything I know, but so similar too. Their political system is different, their freedoms much reduced to my western mindset, but there are still people doing the same things we all do.
Connections can still be made.
Somewhere Inside is interesting because the situation the girls found themselves in was so odd. While on a trip to China for a documentary about North Korean defectors, they follow a guide to the frozen river that served as the best crossing. While walking on this river, they briefly cross over into North Korea. Border Gaurds chase down Laura and Euna and drag them into North Korea.
That begins the five month captivity, much of it in the capital city of Pyongyang. During captivity they were subjected to daily interrogations and threatened with long prison sentences, eventually culminating in a trial where both woman were sentenced to 12 years hard labor. This was in part due to the fact that they were coheresed into a confession of wanting to harm the Democatic People's Republic of North Korea.
Eventually, they were released when Bill Clinton was allowed to come and apologize and take them home.
The World is Bigger Now is Euna Lee, the documentary's editor's side of the story. Through most of the captivity, the two woman were held separately. It almost feels as if Euna, originally from South Korea, was treated more harshly, or that could have been her mindset. Laura never thought that they were going to be killed. Euna, however, frequently wondered if they were going to simply kill her.
Somewhere Inside's narritive is split between Laura in her captivity and Lisa doing everything she could in the US, to get her and Euna home.
Both books are inspirational stories Laura and Euna did endure a frightening and traumatizing time in a country whose people are taught that Americans are enemies and want to make their lives worse. During this captivity, both able to make connections with their guards, and their interrogato, and in Laura's case, her interpreter. The young woman who gaurd them like music, and tv, have families, and act silly. Laura's interrogator is a feeling man who doesn't like sending people to prison, and when he feels like he can, is almost brotherly to Laura.
It is important to say, that besides their being held prisoner, and the beating they recived upon being drug nack over the border, (Which I get the feeling was not looked kindly on by people who were tasked to care for them),all the physical hardships that the girls suffer, are suffered by the citizens of the DPRK. The frequent power outages, the cold. They were likely fed better than the average citizen could afford.
This is not to defend the mental torment that was afflicted on to them, its just true.
It shouldn't have happened. They should not have been lead to that area to film, they shouldn't have *asked* to be taken to that area to film, they shouldn't have crossed over, the guards shouldn't have chased them down and they should not have been held. My feeling is that the guide double crossed them.
They showed amazing fortitude during their captivity, even if they, out of fear and not knowing any better, did some not too smart things.
Now, I have to say that what struck me most is the fact that Laura's story in particular shows the amazing privilege of people in the media.
I think that Laura and Euna got out as fast as they did, entirely because of Lisa Ling's connections. Not only did Laura and Euna work for Al Gore's TV network, but Lisa has contacts high up in CNN and other media (Anderson Cooper and Oprah). I mean, shit, she knew someone who knew then sitting President Obama's sister and was able to get a letter to the man himself through that contact.
Now, I don't blame her in the slightest for utilizing those contacts. If it were someone in my family, and I had a way to get the ear of people in the Whitehouse or Hollywood, you better believe I would do it! The point is, if this naive and reckless film crew would have been a group of independent documentarians without connections to the who's who of government and media, would they have been able to get Bill Clinton to fly over there amid nuclear tests and government officials sniping at each other?
I don't know the answer to that, but the cynical side of me has its doubts.
There of course, is a flipside here, if they had. Not been working for a former vice president, and Laura had not been related to someone who was known in North Korea an an enemy, would they have been held held as political bargaining chips? Again, I don't know.
They are interesting books, that made me think.

HAPPY 16TH BIRTHDAY!!! To this elderly bapy boye!!! he...!!!
#cats#ghhbbb this is the first time I've genuinely considered tumblr blazing a post lol but no.. i shant.. I feel too weird putting financial#information into tumblr or whatever unless I made like a seperate bank account or something not associated with anyhting else lol#but I gave it serious contemplation which is really sayng something (the evil magical spell that all cats cast over u by their perfection)#ANYWAY.................... old man!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!#it's technically like march 8th but I did his party a little early. I have other pictures to post later maybe too..hrmm#The '1' candle is actually a '4' candle with the side part cut off because they didn't have any 1s#I went all out (like under $15 still lol) and got new birthday decorations for him instead of using the same old#ones from the past like 5 birthdays that I've done for the cats lol..#His theme was rainbows mostly in as light of colors as I could find#The legal age to drive a car in the US is 16 so.... honk honk beep beep.. I shall go out and buy him the most expensive car on the market#as soon as March 8th comes. then he can run little errands (probably mostly getting kibbles or chicken somewhere)#stealing the rotisserie chickens from walmart or something lol#AND they would let him have them. He would drive up and walk inside and they'd call the manager to come over#and they would be so moved by his presence and his big goofy stare that they would just be like..... okey.. have all the chicken in the#entire store. Actually. have the store. it's yours now. And This would continue all the way up the chain until he was handed#the entire walmart company. And every other company. a boy who owns everything. probably wouldnt use it for evil. he'd just abolish#everything and then focus on eating chickens.. ........ chibken son...

Suck and Blow
Written for the prompt ‘suck’ for @steddiemicrofic
480 words / rated T / another first kiss
Someone yells, “Let’s play suck and blow,” and someone else titters, saying, “I didn’t know it was that kind of party,” and Steve finds himself jostled into a circle. A girl with a shaved head is on his left and Eddie’s to his right.
“Uh…” Steve’s eyes dart between the girl and Eddie. “Isn’t this game meant to be boy girl boy girl?”
“Aw, Robin,” Robin’s cool new gay college friend says, “your token heterosexual is so cute,” and everyone laughs and it’s not like he’s being mean, but his words sit uneasily. Tangle in Steve’s chest in a way he can only describe as wrong.
Robin must take his squirming as discomfort at playing the game because she catches his eye from across the circle, mouthing, “You don’t have to play,” but he waves her off.
Steve Harrington is no party pooper.
The card is passed from person to person, sucking and blowing in turn, lips pressed together, the charade of a kiss. The girl with the shaved head smells faintly of weed and her hand is hot on Steve’s neck as she passes the card to him. She winks as they part and then Steve turns to Eddie.
Electricity crackles between them, inexplicable and confusing, but maybe not new. Definitely not bad, which is more confusing, and Steve is thinking about that, and how Eddie’s eyes are pretty in this light, not the game, and, at the last second, the card falls. Their lips brush and the electricity shoots through Steve, gathering in his lips, fizzing in his blood.
And it’s… Oh, it’s…
Eddie jerks back and grabs the card from the floor, barely looking at Steve as he says, “Guess I forgot to suck,” before turning to the guy next to him. Everyone laughs again, and the game goes on, but Steve’s lips don’t stop tingling.
Later, when the party is winding down, Steve finds Eddie smoking out on the balcony, leaning on the rail. Steve steps up beside him. “Hey.”
“Hey.”
Steve produces a card from the back pocket of his jeans. “Do over?”
Eddie eyes the card for a moment, then shakes his head. “It’s fine, man, we can forget all about it.” The end of his cigarette glows brightly as he inhales, smoke drifting up into the night as he breathes out again. “No big deal.”
“Right, yeah…” The card gets tucked back into Steve’s pocket with a sigh. “No big deal.” Except… Taking a chance, Steve adds, “Or maybe we don’t need the card?” Because he’s pretty sure he knows why his lips haven’t stopped tingling since he almost kissed Eddie earlier.
Moonlight dances in Eddie’s wide eyes as he looks over Steve’s face. Then, seemingly satisfied, he crushes his cigarette and slowly nods. “Yeah. Maybe we don’t.”
Steve smiles and leans in, heart beating fast as he closes the distance between them.

(I screwed up the text placement on the last page, read from professor membrane top left, down to zim bottom left, then dib top right)
Poor Dib lol
Btw i headcanon that zim has an internship at membrane labs when they're in high school. Zim talks to Membrane about Dib and them hanging out (he thinks the boys are dating and just not telling him yet) and the professor is hoping zim's "real science" attitude rubs off on Dib lmao

this line in the description for Yellowjackets really gets to me. "25 years later, they discover that what began in the wild is far from over." time and time again im just struck by how effective this show is at saying exactly what it feels like to go through life as a woman. you still have this girl inside you who is wild and childish and scared. she doesn't know how to move her body she doesn't know how to ask for what she wants she's a freak she's an idol she's a mess she's a messiah she's a witch and a wicked little beast she's the best friend a girl could have. but it's time to be an Adult Woman now! congratulations, you're out of the woods! we know that was confusing and traumatic for you but rest assured thats all done. maybe you'll have a husband and a teenager of your own maybe you'll be a politician maybe you're going to run a mlm. it doesnt matter, just make sure you're unrecognizable from the wild animal you were. you're supposed to be unrecognizable. you're supposed to have it together, you're supposed to be boring. strawberry lube is for bisexuals and goths. and teenagers. Please be more boring. this Whole Thing this whole charade of adulthood doesn't work if you don't keep it together. grow up! so you do. for a while it sticks. your family is doing fine, your career is doing fine, your meds are working fine, maybe you've been to a few rehabs but this last one was going fine. and 25 years later you look around at the not-real life you're supposed to want to be a part of, the one you put together exactly as per the instructions, and you realize... it doesnt end. you aren't out of the woods you're just stranded in a different part of them. you probably have another 25 years to go, minimum. "I think shit is gonna get a lot worse out here." your life is far from over but you can't keep living it like this. numbing yourself with substances to make it tolerable, or going full speed ahead toward something you don't even really want just to prove you're Doing It you're Assimilating, or feeling insane for still being haunted by 'ancient' history that really didn't happen that long ago, or cooking a fucking meatloaf for the husband that doesn't get you and the daughter that doesn't want to. if you're going to survive the monotony of adulthood the way you survived the chaos of adolescence, you're going to have to get wild again. you're going to have to go back. because the wilderness can be terrifying with its harsh elements its cruel indifference its lurking predators and blah blah blah but do you want to know what's even scarier? that endless stretch in all directions of sameness. stump, tree, stream, moss. stump, tree, stream, moss. have we passed this way already, have we taken this route before? tree tree tree tree tree for miles and miles and miles. that is the wild, too. unending. repetitive. barren. where it ends, so do you. it lasts your whole life, and it's far from over. you've got to find a way to survive it. again.
