So you wanna get into NCT eh?

Let's do this.

NCT - Neo Culture Technology - is naturally an intimidating group to get into - there's twenty members but there have been members added and people have left and there's another group set to debut and there's subgroups and everything seems all over the place all the time, but if you're willing to jump into it all it's so absolutely incredibly worth it and less complicated than it seems at first! Let me walk you through some basics- I'll do more posts to get deeper into each group later, but this will be a primer for getting you started.

Where to start? NCT officially debuted in April 2016 with fifteen members after promoting for a while as trainees and with other trainees (including future members of Red Velvet) under the SM Rookies banner. Part of the original plan for NCT as announced at their debut was to continuously add members with no end in sight, and to expand into a group with members from all over the world who could promote in different areas at the same time. This... didn't really come to fruition ultimately, tho they do have members from seven(ish) countries. (Taiwan is a free country y'all, that makes seven. Macau is a "special administrative region of China", that's the ish.) There will be one more unit added to NCT soon, the final new set of members, but this post is going to proceed with only the current groups and subunits since The Babies (as I like to call them) aren't officially debuted yet and I don't feel like explaining them here since this is already going to be long enough. Either way, NCT's unlimited expansion has officially ended which hopefully removes that bit of intimidation.

Now on to some music!

The first song and MV that NCT released was under the broad NCT U umbrella, and started with The 7th Sense. (Wait what the heck is NCT U, you ask? I'll get there, trust me, keep reading)

The 7th Sense unit was comprised of Taeyong, Mark, Jaehyun, Doyoung, and Ten, five of the fifteen debut members.

The next day, NCT U released Without You, sung by Doyoung, Taeil, and Jaehyun, so two boys we saw already plus a new one.

The full list of members (that I and no one else expects you to remember at this point) at debut were Taeil, Taeyong, Johnny, Yuta, Ten, Doyoung, Jaehyun, Winwin, Mark, Haechan, Jaemin, Jeno, Renjun, Chenle, and Jisung.

Since debut, members have been added, growing NCT to 23, and then a few left, dropping it back to 20. In 2018, Kun, Jungwoo and Lucas were added; in 2019, Xiaojun, Hendery, and Yangyang were added; in 2020, Shotaro and Sungchan were added. In 2023, Lucas was removed after being on hiatus for almost two years because of a scandal, and then Shotaro and Sungchan were pulled from NCT and re-debuted in SM's new boy group, RIIZE. (No, we're not going to get into my opinions or emotions about any of this right now, yes, I have a lot of opinions about both things and a lot of emotions about SungTaro. Maybe in a different post if people really wanna know.)

So what do I mean when I call NCT U an umbrella? Is that what the U stands for? No, not really, tho it's a handy way to think of things! U stands for United (or Unlimited, depending on who you ask) and is a flexible title that allows them to release songs using any members of the whole group. This lets them pick from a pool of currently 20 different members with different skills to best fit the concept of a song, and has allowed them to do things like release songs with multiple lead vocalists, songs with a collection of rappers, etc. It's super flexible- some U songs have only two members performing, some have nine, etc. (Once you become familiar with all of the members, the U songs become a lot of fun when it comes to seeing who gets mixed and matched for projects!)

Overall, don't worry too much about NCT U yet. Having the basic knowledge that it could be anyone is really enough to get you going and you can come back to all of the NCT U releases later. NCT has released four albums now as a full group (Empathy, Resonance, Universe, and Golden Age) that have both fixed subunit songs and NCT U songs with mixed members so there's a bunch of fun with all that later once you've gotten more of the basics down.

The key to getting into NCT is splitting it into the sub-units, of which there are currently four, including U.

NCT U - flexible subunit of varying combined members

NCT 127 - 9 member fixed unit, concept being that they're focused on Seoul (127 is the longitude of Seoul)

NCT Dream - 7 member fixed unit, original concept involving the fact that they were the seven youngest members at debut

WayV - 6 member fixed unit, releasing music primarily in Mandarin with a focus on promotion in China

The easiest thing to do if you want to take on learning all 20 members (plus the 3 former members which are at least in past MVs and content so you'll come across them either way) is to pick one of the three fixed units (NCT 127, NCT Dream, or WayV) and learn the members of that group before moving on to the next. NCT 127 and NCT Dream also share two members, which gives you a little leg up when you get to going from one to the other!

I'll make posts getting into each group more in depth soon to talk about members and with my fave songs and recommendations etc, so for each of the fixed units, I'll put in here their debut plus a recent song so you can get a grasp of how each group has grown and changed.

NCT 127 was the first of the subunits to debut, releasing Firetruck in July 2016.

127 debuted with Taeil, Taeyong, Yuta, Jaehyun, Winwin, Mark and Haechan. The fashion and hair in this MV is uhhhhhh wild? Yeah we'll go with wild.

127 has gone through some lineup changes over the years as they've changed and grown- they added Johnny, Doyoung, and Jungwoo, and then Winwin went on indefinite 127-hiatus when he joined WayV in 2019.

Their most recent release was in October of this year and is so good that it managed to make it into my top 5 songs of this year on Spotify in slightly over a month so uhhhhh yeah here's Fact Check-

NCT 127 is known for having music that's a little more experimental and sometimes just straight up weird, so you'll see a lot of mixed opinions of them on the internet (I've seen people calling some/all of their songs just noise music) but they're ultimately like most kpop groups and have released stuff in all kinds of styles with different mixed influences, so it's worth listening to at least a few things before forming any kinds of opinions about their music if you don't like the first song or two you hear. I mean. It's worth it EXTRA if you do like thier music obviously. Anyway.

NCT Dream debuted not long after NCT 127 in August 2016 as a bunch of ACTUAL BABIES, aged between 14-17 at debut. Yeah that's right, Chenle and Jisung were both 14. They debuted with the now iconic Chewing Gum, that involves some wild hoverboard choreography that isn't shown as much in the MV but was probably more dangerous than a bunch of kids should have been doing on stages all the time (especially one time outdoors in the rain???), but they all survived so I guess it's fine?

WHAT A BUNCH OF ADORABLE BABIES.

NCT Dream debuted with Mark, Haechan, Renjun, Jeno, Jaemin, Chenle, and Jisung. Yes, Mark and Haechan are also in the NCT 127 list! They are workaholics who can't stop won't stop basically. (Yes, we also all worry about their health. It's A Thing.)

The original concept behind Dream was that it would be the youngest members of NCT, and when members grew old enough they would graduate out, and new younger members of NCT would be added in turn as members were added to NCT. The only element of this that was ever put into practice was graduating out Mark in December 2018 as he was the eldest member; no new members were added however, and eventually the whole plan was scrapped and Mark was re-added to Dream in 2020 (back where he BELONGS) and Dream officially became a fixed unit like 127 and WayV.

The boys are now between the ages of 21-24, and their music has grown a lot as they've grown out of their cute concepts and into more mature looks and sounds. Their most recent release was in July of this year, ISTJ.

They're still known for having a more youthful, optimistic vibe, and there's something incredibly uplifting and exuberant about them in general at basically all times. These boys have been together for half of their lives at this point and really grown up together and- yeah I have a lot of emotions about Dream that I'll save for later.

Moving on!

WayV time! WayV officially debuted in 2019 with the Mandarin version of Regular.

(NCT 127 released both Korean and English versions of Regular as well, and they are the last NCT 127 MVs that feature Winwin before he became 127-inactive and became fully active with WayV instead.)

WayV debuted with Winwin, Kun, Ten, Xiaojun, Hendery, Yangyang, and Lucas. Lucas has since been removed from NCT and WayV and the other six members have continued to promote as a six member group.

WayV has hit some snags, especially with things out of their control like the pandemic- they live in Seoul when they're not promoting or touring, and travel into and out of China has been difficult for obvious reasons for the past few years, which has made it harder for them to be pushing into the Chinese music industry when they haven't been able to travel in China as freely as they could have under other circumstances and couldn't do things like concerts or fanmeets. They have started touring and promoting more heavily in Southeast Asia more recently, and some of the members like Winwin and Ten have spent time in China over the past few years working on things like acting in dramas, participating in variety shows, or judging on Chinese dance competition shows as well. Xiaojun is also currently a host on one of the the Korean weekly music shows, SBS's The Show.

WayV's most recent comeback was actually last month but I'm gonna use their comeback from the VERY end of last year (Dec 28) in this post because I'm still obsessed with this song-

WayV mix a lot of different elements into their music and are the most multilingual of the groups- since they're based in Seoul, they've often performed on the weekly Korean music shows with English versions of their songs, and they have the NCT member who speaks the most languages in Ten, who is Thai, and speaks Thai, Mandarin, Korean, English, and Japanese, as well as multiple members who speak four (Hendery and Xiaojun both speak Cantonese, Mandarin, Korean, and English; Yangyang speaks Mandarin, English, Korean and German). They also have Kun, who is both a licensed airplane pilot and licensed sky diver (who promoted Phantom by skydiving with a banner for it) as well as being a music producer AND the only member of NCT to have a university degree. Basically WayV is a bunch of overachievers who deserve the whole world.

So..... that's all the subunits! I hope this breakdown gave you a place to start with. Feel free to use this as a base to go look up more information about each subunit, or watch the videos I included here and the ones I linked throughout in the text in various places to get started. I will also make some more posts about each subunit to get into more about the members and more songs by each so you can hang out and wait for those too!

I've talked to a few people about how to get into NCT in basics, and this post is dedicated to @catatonicrainbow most specifically as being the most recent internet pal to want to get into NCT and being the one who finally got me to make some kind of thing like this. Meanwhile, @poetry-protest-pornography and I have been discussing starting a kpop podcast where I teach her about different groups as my knowledge is vast and deep and has been accumulating in my brain since around 2008 and she's MUCH newer to kpop than me, and I often infodump at her already about various groups. So like. Now that we're both talking about that publicly I guess we really gotta do it. Maybe I'll make companion posts on here to go with the podcast? Or something. We'll see. “WAS HE DROPPED on the head when he was a kid?” 

You can’t help the snort that passes your lips, making a satisfying slap to Jeno’s arm. “Don’t be mean.” 

“You didn’t answer my question.” Jeno raises an eyebrow.

“Eh… maybe like once or twice. Not that I would know, I was the same age as him but I’m just guessing.” 

You two continue to watch the disaster in front of you befold. Hyuck was currently bothering Yeri. Apparently, he didn’t know the limits as to when to stop because the older senior’s ears are burning red. You’re sure if you were in a cartoon right now, Yeri would have smoke coming out of them, nostrils flaring. 

“Should we intervene?” You side-eye Jeno and he’s the least bit concerned, eyes blearily watching the soon-to-be wreck happen in slow motion, cheek smushed against his palm. 

“Nah. This is way more entertaining than continuing my stats homework.” 

You peer over his notebook and he has the word problem and equation written down. Humming, you bring your attention back to the stars of the show and see Yeri grip her notebook tighter, knuckles going white. 

“Here we go.” You sing, Hyuck’s screams of protest soon alerting everyone in the campus plaza of his pain. 

“He never learns his lesson, huh?” Renjun finally joins, his boots making the fall leaves on the ground crunch. Throwing his book bag on the table, it scrunches Jeno’s current page in his statistics work but the latter doesn’t care. 

The two of you nod simultaneously. You and Jeno halfheartedly discouraged Hyuck from going to poke at Yeri around five minutes ago, soon after the three of you had sat down at your usual spot under the only weeping willow tree on campus. It was honestly impressive how quickly your mutual friend could annoy someone so quickly. 

“We should time him. See how long it takes for Yeri to lash out at him next.” You mutter the idea, Jeno pursing his lips after the two shift left and right around Yeri and company’s picnic table, a textbook held high in Yeri’s nimble fingers. Wendy and Seulgi are ducking as Irene begins trying to stop the madness, scolding Joy for cheering on their youngest.

“Not a bad idea to be honest. Wanna bet?” Jeno grins and you shake on his hand without looking at him. 

It was just getting good. Hyuck doesn’t have the endurance to continue but Yeri does. Pilates has done her well. 

Renjun quirks an eyebrow, pulling out his laptop as an apple slice is shoved into the corner of his mouth. “You don’t even know the conditions of the bet yet.” 

You shrug, thoroughly entertained as Hyuck sits on his knees, his hands rubbing together furiously as he begs for mercy. “Next time, he gets Yeri to go after him under two minutes.” 

“I say three.” Jeno nods and he offers a hand again which you shake. 

“You underestimate that little lady’s body. She can hold a lot of anger.” 

Jeno hums in response, ending the conversation quickly as Hyuck stumbles his way over, a pout sat on his lips. The well-beaten idiot rubs at his forearms, mumbling curses under his breath as he plops down beside Renjun. 

“Didn’t end well, did it bud?”

At the smug expression you have plastered on, Hyuck’s pout deepens. “It’s not funny. I need her to partner with me in Psych. I’ll go fucking crazy if I actually have to work with Felix.” 

“Felix’s a sweetheart. I don’t know why you have it out for him.” 

Hyuck rolls his eyes, running his hands through the ruffled brown strands. Yeri managed to grab a bunch of pine needles and aim correctly enough, even with the air resistance the leaves have. 

Renjun beside him plucks a long green one out the battered boy who’s seated beside him, slouched over on the picnic table. “You can’t have two eggheads who don’t pay attention in class paired together. Isn’t that so, Hyuck?” Renjun baby-voices, the latter placing his chin on his stacked wrists to glare. 

“Somebody’s cranky.” Chenle swings by, a childish smirk gracing everybody’s presence. 

“It’s justified.” Hyuck huffs, turning away from the new arrival. You scoot over, bumping into Jeno’s large body to allow Chenle to sit. 

“Why are you so meaty nowadays? Take a break from the gym, will you? We can barely fit eight people at this table as it is.” There’s playful malice in your voice but a little truth in there. The asshole was getting too bulky for your liking. 

“Oh please. Mark hardly swings by for lunch with us anymore. And why by chance are you bothered by me bulking up?” Jeno leans closer, eyes impossibly close to yours, “Are you swooning yet?” 

Ignoring your heart racing faster, you slap a palm to his forehead, pushing Jeno further away from your face. “No, I’m sick of these freshies asking me for your number, that’s why. You want to know how many asked for your digits indirectly through me this entire week?” 

Chenle and Renjun have suddenly started bickering about something and you have to raise your voice a little. 

“Five. Five people. Four girls and one guy. I’d be proud of you if it weren’t for the annoyance starting to kick in.” Jeno raises his eyebrows at the number, finally flattening down his stats paper. 

“And what’d you tell ‘em?” Jeno bites distractedly at the cap of his pen, seeming to hit the realization his work has to get done by midnight. 

“That they should ask you themselves,” You’re rolling your eyes, nudging at Chenle to back off on his squishing, practically half his body across the table to try and snatch at Renjun’s sliced apples, “I’m kind of sick of your posse trying to scour me for your personal information.” 

“Get your own, dingus! We get our rations per month at the commons!”

“I’m not giving up a precious coupon just to get one apple slice, come on!” 

“Tell them to stop then.” Jeno tries to solve.

You laugh incredulously, watching Jeno’s concentrated (confused more like) side profile. “You think that deters them? They regenerate into different people every week. The message is not passed on from generation to generation apparently.” 

Jeno makes that endearing ‘huH?’ sound and you grab at the notebook yourself, having taken Statistics 101 before. He thanks you under his breath, which you nod at before Jeno slumps onto your shoulder, sighing heavily. 

“Sorry. I know it bothers you. I would go around and tell them to back off of you and me personally but I don’t know all their names.”

Glancing at Jeno, it irritates you helplessly that you know he’s not even trying to sound dickish. He’s just that sweet and kind of a guy that makes other people not want to want to talk to him and ask those types of questions themselves. You know those people that seem too perfect to want to approach? Yeah, that’s Lee Jeno in a nutshell. If you looked up the definition of that type of person in a book, Jeno would be grinning that Samoyed smile of his from on that cursed page. 

“I should tape a sign to my back that says, ‘Ask Lee Jeno himself. I’m not his personal owl,’” You peek at his face, “What do you think?” 

He slightly smiles, eyes crinkling almost shut even at such a small gesture of amusement. “Okay. I’ll add my signature to it so that they know it’s signed by yours truly.” He looks up to your face and you’re glad the cold can disguise your flustered face easily with this type of weather. 

Guess it’s time to actually settle this officially since it’s been clued at a little, but yes: You do have a crush on Jeno. And no, he does not know because when does telling one of your best friends’ that you’ve been crushing on them ever worked out? 

No, not in the Wattpad story kind of way, you mean truly worked out. Because personally, you’ve never heard of it working out ever, especially since you’re practically in the you’ve-seen-him-in-his-boxers and he’s-seen-you-shirtless stage of friendship. Don’t ask, it’s a long story that’s already too long for this kind of boring read. 

So, no, you will not take your chances, thank you very much. There were many signs flashing neon that told you Jeno didn’t see you in a romantic or sexual kind of way but the glaringly obvious sign was actually the one you two are discussing currently. 

What’s the appropriate way of acting if your crush is being berated by other peers on campus to give them your number? You’re not confident in what it actually looks like because for one, you’re not on the receiving end in this imaginary scenario, and two, it’s exactly that; an imaginary scenario. You can’t even seriously dream Jeno liking you if you could. It was just that bizarre. 

In the two years you've known the boy, he’s never even once mentioned another human being that he could potentially be interested in on campus. It’s not a problem of him not being comfortable telling you either because he’s told you upright that he’s not interested in anybody here (including you who’s enrolled in this stupid university). You’ve even nonchalantly asked Jaemin before and he’s confirmed that even in high school, this kid did not have wandering eyes. 

You had wondered if Jeno was asexual, aromantic, or something along that line in the spectrum, eventually having the courage to ask him one day and he shook his head no quite confidently, a small smile laid on his lips. 

You don't know what Jeno's deal was but the risks in finding out really didn’t lean in your favor. And that’s fine, considering how many fish are available of Earth’s wide sea of potential mates. You’ve killed off even the chance of dating Jeno and that’s all good in your book. You’ve been attracted to your guy friends once and twice and they faded away with time exploring their weird quirks or horrible habits. And even if Jeno was a strange case where you’ve even seen the dude have beer drip from his nostrils from a shitty keg stand and you still manage to harbor feelings for him… eh. 

Time brushes away a lot of problems if you’re desperate and willing enough. Luckily for you, you checked off both boxes easily with this special instance.

You open your laptop and scour your documents for your old stats notes on chi-square tests. Bleh.

Pretending to gag in your mouth at the sight, Jeno smothers a laugh that shakes your shoulder and you share the document his way before scrolling and finding the right topic. You do the problem with few difficulties and write a quick message in the corner of his notebook page. 

‘Actually study this because Y/N did the example and took time from her day to do so, thank you.’

“Thanks,” Jeno chirps as he takes his notebook back, removing himself from your shoulder (to your well-hidden disappointment), “I owe you one.” 

“You’re right. A coffee works just fine, thank you.” You pipe back, folding your hands on the table cheerily. Jeno is shaking his head in mock annoyance but you knew the next time you two meet, you would not be disheartened, a warm cup pressed in hand. 

“A four-dollar coffee is worth one solved problem in your book?” Jeno argues. 

You fire back without hesitation. “It’s statistics. And I just sent two semesters’ worth of notes to you. You’re very welcome.” 

“You’re right,” Jeno turns, stowing his notebook away, “That’s like seven coffees then.” 

“And a scone if you’re feeling nice. A croissant works too.” You beam. 

“Now you’re pushing it. Those things are stupidly overpriced.” 

“Even for me?” You playfully place your chin in your cupped hands, blinking slowly and looking through your lashes. 

Jeno sighs, placing a hand on your head of hair. “Fine. You win, you spoiled princess.” 

In times like these, you knew you really asked to be put in these types of situations. And you’re not one to start being a saint and stop being hypocritical but… you deserved what you were putting yourself through, saying these types of things and teasing like this. Trying to get a stir and playact with being more. 

Maybe it was a little cruel, somewhat tricking Jeno into saying sweet things to you, just to let your mind wander for a second. Call it… taking advantage of his friendship to pretend a little. Harmless but still adds into your ledger of sins for Judgement Day right?

11. Beatbox-NCT Dream

Unfortunately this repackage wasn’t as good as the original album for me. I like Glitch Mode a lot more than Beatbox, it just doesn’t stand out to me. Maybe it’ll grow on me but I doubt it.

10. Do You Wanna Get Down-Lunarsolar

So sad to see their disbandment announcement but I’m glad we got one more song. I didn’t like it as much as Oh Ya Ya Ya or Dadada but it was still fun.

9. Bring It On-Oneus

I keep on going back and forth on my opinions of Oneus songs lol. They’ll release a couple songs I really love and that I find interesting but then they release a song that doesn’t stand out to me at all. This was one of those songs. Just not my vibe

8. Deep-Hyo

A comeback full of ups and downs. While I’m so happy she got an actual EP instead of just another single, I’m not happy that it’s basically all her previous singles. Deep itself is also a hit or miss song and that changes everytime I listen to it. One minute I love it but the next I just don’t want to listen to it.

7. The Greatest-BoA

She truly is the greatest, no one is doing it like her. I haven’t listened to the album because I’m not a huge fan of this kind of remaster/greatest hits album but the single is great and a bop.

6. Aria-Yerin

Another Gfriend solo debut! I think this suits her so well and it’s so fun. I love light and airy pop like this.

5. Fearless-Le Sserafim

So many solid debuts this year! I was hyped for Sakura and Chaewons re debut and it was even better when Yunjin was added. She was one of my favorites on Produce 48. I enjoy Fearless but it does sound like an intro song to me and not the main single. But it’s a good intro song so it’s higher up on this list lol. I wish we got a Yunjin high note but eh what can you do.

4. Alive-Lightsum

I’m glad that they’re continuing to get attention from Cube and with an EP this time. I feel like the b sides are a bit generic but it’s still early on, they’ve got time to find a niche. Alive is probably my least favorite title track but it’s still so good, I love their energy.

3. Hot-Seventeen

We finally got more sexy concept seventeen. I thought that they were making a concept change back with Fear but it didn’t happen. Hot is so good I like it a lot.

2. How Come-Brave Girls

I wasn’t expecting to like this as much as I did. I only just became a fan of Brave Girls because of Queendom 2 and How Come is one of my favorite Brown Eyed Girls songs so this remake came at the best time. It’s got a great mix of the original songs charm and their own twist on it. So good.

Emo kings TXT are back and they’re really leaning into the emo vibes. I hope they stick with this kind of concept for a while, they do it really well.

hi! I just wanna tell you that DEAR M IS LOSER JAEHYUN'S ERA. Lol kidding aside. I noticed that he was kinda stiff (idk if thats the right word) and that his actions are kind of awkward. The little twitch over here and there... some quirks i do when i feel awkward. He does that when he's not even at the center. Like you'll notice how awkward he felt at that moment. But dont get me wrong i love jaehyun sm. I just feel like he can do more if he's given a chance to star in another drama. ALSO he's a good kisser (on screen). improvisation makes me think is something that might be good for jaehyun during those “i’m not the main focus” moments. i think lots of people well known or beginning should take improve classes every now and then to learn/refresh their skills! plus i think it would be super fun! sorta like what they did when they were the college students he’s pretty quick on his feet when people give him a chance to get his thoughts together; and witty too 😊

i'm like terrified for winwin and yuta's acting debuts. people who are fans of yuta seem to have all these high expectations but from the trailer i'm like "eh, reminds me of Gokusen but edgier" lol i love yuta but i'm expecting it's going to be him glaring daggers (which he's amazing at doing already), the typical japanese tough school boy/tough guy growl (idk how they do this when they talk but i secretly love it), then proceed into a fight scene where the camera work is about about a C+ where you can clearly see no actual physical contact happened 🤣 but this is such a great opportunity for yuta and it’s like FINALLY he gets a chance to shine on his own and for winwin...like winwin is secretly my spirit animal 😊 but i'm not expecting much from him. he doesn't really "emote/react" that much when around the nct members and with wayv (though i did see laughing, talking, etc. more) it doesn't make me think like 'yeah he's going to be a decent actor" but he looks like he's having so much fun and that's all i care about ^^ when you do something you love and have fun doing it you’re not actually “working” so winwin fighting!

There are general accounts for NCT on most of the big social media services such as Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram. There are also accounts for all of the subgroups, so NCT 127 does have their own accounts on all of those as well. I feel like the Youtube content deserves its own post so I'll get to that but 127 does have a Youtube channel as well.

The individual members share things like the Twitter and Instagram accounts on and off, taking turns sometimes to post on there, tho most posts are from the company. Facebook gets posts from the company and not from individuals very often. The boys do all have their own Instagram accounts tho, and they also all use Bubble to varying degrees, which is an app which a lot of kpop groups use where fans can pay to access special posts from idols that include text posts, pictures, voice recordings, etc. I have never been a Bubble user, but I follow everyone on Instagram so here's all of those:

You can use those to become more familiar with the members and see some of the nonsense they get up to. Some of them post often and some post almost never so your mileage may vary with them as a tool, but I'm a sucker for personal social media accounts so I'm clearly following those all.

It's also worth throwing out there since I skipped talking about positions last time that Taeyong is the leader of both NCT 127 and also of NCT in general. He's also a main rapper, main dancer, visual, center, helps write and produce music and has since The 7th Sense was released, etc etc, you name it, he's probably done the thing. He's ridiculously talented, basically. (They all are.) I could list everyone's positions but there's tons of wiki pages and etc with those kinds of lists and I find them to be less helpful when you have a group like NCT where everyone kinda does everything a lot of the time and has multiple talents and jobs since the rappers might be singing or the vocalists might be rapping depending on the song and literally everyone is a visual etc. But that's part of why you might be noticing that Taeyong is front and center like... a lot. Very often. He's recognisable and has a distinctive voice and being the leader is a good extra excuse to focus on him.

Anyway, let's get back to the music! I somehow managed to come up with ten more videos to link to hit the max per post so you're getting another full variety tasting of 127's style and range with a special treat at the end.

Favorite (Oct 25, 2021) was the lead single from the repackage of Sticker and was not quite as divisive as Sticker but still a bit weird. Released right before Halloween, there's a whole vampire concept going on (GREAT) and the MV and live stage performances all have a weird electronic dance break 2 1/2 minutes in (BAD) that I am PLEASED TO TELL YOU is not part of the song on the actual album. The first time I watched the MV it threw me for such a hard loop that I almost hated disliked the song but when I listened to the album later on spotify I was like "wait it's gone!!!! it was all just a bad dream!!!" and I try to forget it until I do something like watch the MV to make a post like this.

We're gonna mix in some of 127's Japanese releases today starting with their first one, Chain (May 8, 2018) off their first Japanese mini album. Despite NCT's initial plan to have groups based in different countries and markets, they are still now in early 2024 only ABOUT to have their first Japan-centric subunit debut, which means that they've just been having 127 (and Dream) release some stuff in Japanese in the meantime. It helps that they have a Japanese member. Anyway Chain is just a great song so here it is.

gimme gimme (Feb 15, 2021) suffers a little from the eternal problem of kpop songs even in primarily Japanese having some.... wild? English lyrics (spicy disease? dead clowns? who wrote these lyrics? why did their native English speakers go along with this?) but despite the nonsense it's a catchy, mesmerizing earworm of a song with a tight MV with a lot of neat cuts and transitions and I have watched it VERY MANY times. I love it. Spicy disease and all.

In the first main NCT intro post I included WayV's version of Regular (October 8, 2018) and linked both this and the Korean version. I was going to include the Korean version and just link the English here since the Korean one is the one that I personally listen to the most, but then I noticed that the English version has like 66 million more views so I decided to reverse that and you get the English one. Anyway. All versions of Regular are great and the English version has some great weird lyrics too ("I be walking with the cheese that's the queso" is like... ultimate. Incredible. A+. How did Jaehyun record that without laughing? Legendary.). It's also, with Simon Says, one of the only MVs that has all ten members of NCT 127. It also has a CGI tiger, shiny cars, rockets going off, Winwin jumping off a building, there's just a lot going on.

Sliding back to Japan for a minute, I feel like I should include Wakey Wakey (March 18, 2019). I almost forget this song exists sometimes and I think it's because I just want to block out having seen the absolutely terrible wig they put on Johnny for this MV. Seriously why? The song itself is solidly in the weird but also very catchy lane that 127 does so well but I just keep thinking about the wig. Johnny had some long extensions for NCT 2020 that looked great on him, but this wig was just not it. My eyes are drawn to it every time he's on screen. I need to put this into my regular listening-only playlists and let my brain block that wig out the way I forget the dance break in Favorite exists.

127 started 2023 off with Ay-Yo (Jan 30, 2023) which was the (somewhat delayed) repackage of 2 Baddies, which we'll get to in a moment. I wasn't sure what to think of Ay-Yo at first but it has definitely grown on me despite having veered back into some questionable hair territory mainly for Taeyong (and I say that as a grown up late 90s punk kid who thought giant hair spikes were cool). The MV has some absolutely wild visuals mixed in, and the song is definitely outside of the realm of standard kpop releases even if it's not as weird as some others like Sticker. It's solid.

Okay so. Like. I honestly didn't really pay enough attention to the general reactions to 2 Baddies (Sep 15, 2022) to tell you how divisive this song was to most people, but it split one of my group chats VERY strongly and one of my friends has refused to listen to any 127 releases since then because she hates this song so much. I tried to get her with Fact Check at the very least and she's so anti this song that she still refused and I may have lost her on 127 altogether 🤣 It's mainly the chorus that she dislikes, and I'm a little back and forth on it myself sometimes honestly but also I have absolutely BLASTED this song while driving down the highway so it feels kinda like a guilty pleasure song sometimes. If you ignore the chorus the other parts of the song are so goooooooood and no one can deny that the last part of the bridge slaps. Plus there's a whole lot of shirtless Johnny and Yuta which you can never go wrong with.

Touch (Mar 13, 2018) is a little off from the style of kpop that I listen to regularly since it's a bit more in the bubbly poppy side of things that I don't always go for but the vibes are immaculate and everyone looks so happy in the MV and there's fuzzy sweaters and everyone smiles so much? It's hard to not love it. It's fluff and cheery and delightful.

I don't know if SM actually started the "track video" trend (short MVs that have an edited, cut down version of a song so they cost less to produce than a full MV- Lemonade is 3:10 on the Sticker/Favorite album, but this track video is 2:01 for instance) but they love doing them with NCT, and despite Lemonade (Sep 9, 2021) definitely deserving a full MV, since it wasn't the lead single it didn't get one but it did at least get a track video and was performed a lot on the music shows when they were promoting Sticker. It's catchy and has some clever work in the full version lyrics that involve titles of other NCT 127 songs and I've listened to it as much as or possibly more than Sticker.

I've covered all of the lead singles and there ARE some other track videos or special release songs like the recent Be There For Me that I could be using the last slot for but you know what? We're gonna go fully off the expected path and include Let's Shut Up & Dance (Feb 21, 2019) instead because it's wild and fun. 127 doesn't do much besides sing part of the chorus and do a bunch of dancing in this (on the ceiling? on the walls? in an alley?) but like. Lay is here too and the song is SO fun and an absolute bop so that's what we're closing this post out with.

So that wraps the NCT 127 music videos! I'm thinking the next post and the last of the 127 centric ones will be a guide to some of their Youtube content, since there's a whole lot, and that'll kinda set up expectations for the posts about Dream and WayV as well when we get to them. I think after I get through the main posts of MVs and content for all of the sub-units that I might do some special posts of performance videos for songs that don't have MVs just to get some of those out there, or I might just post a bunch of links to them. We'll see how I'm feeling and if my audience of like two or three people has any kind of preference (that's you, hey, yeah you, lemme know what you want from me).

Taeyong:

The two were cuddling on the couch in Jasmine apartment as the rail poured outside. Warm in her embrace, Taeyong was slowly falling asleep, head rising up and down as it rests on her chest. Jasmine's fingers combing his hair as her attention was on the show playing on the television. It was peaceful as the TV was background noise in their small bubble. What interrupts the two is Jasmine's phone as her best friend calls. Taeyong was tempted to snatch it up and press the red button as he was slightly irritated by the interruption. She reached over not too far to the coffee table to grab it and answered the FaceTime call.

“TELL ME IT'S TRUE!”

Jasmine quickly lowered the volume as the loud voice of her friend shook her.

“What are you talking about?”

“YOU AND TAEYONG, THE TAEYONG FROM NCT, ARE DATING??”

Jasmine and Taeyong looked at each other in confusion. How did that even get out? The two were sure that their relationship was a secret as they wanted to keep a private life. Well, the secret’s out and Jasmine was sure her best friend would keep bothering until she confessed. Jasmine sighed and Taeyong caressed her side with his thumb to calm her anxiety.

“How did you find out,” she asked, hoping that they got their information from a shitty blog or something.

“Don’t worry about where, tell me! Is it true?”

“I mean yeah, that’s my nigga.”

Taeyong went back to watching the TV but froze and looked up with wide eyes. He’s never heard his girl say that word. This was new to him. Of course, he’s heard the n word before as he listens to a lot of rap and R&B (R&B credited to Jasmine). But from Jasmine? From Jas's mouth? He never would have thought this would be the day he’d hear her say it. He’s not even listening to the conversation that’s ending as he keeps staring at his girlfriend with a look of surprise.

“Yeah I’ll talk to you later… Bye.”

As she hung up, she look down to see Taeyong with the look still on his face.

“What?”

“...I’m your what?” It took a moment to realize… he’s never heard her say nigga.

“You my nigga,” Jasmine chuckled.

“What… I’m your-“

“EH! You can’t say it,” she hit the top of his head.

“Ow! I wasn’t gonna say it,” Taeyong pouted.

“Mhm yeah… better not.” She kissed his forehead and went back to watching the show, Taeyong still pouting.

Johnny:

Johnny and Nia were casually out and about, doing whatever as Johnny was free from schedule today. Nia wanted to take this opportunity to spend some time as the week’s been hectic with photoshoots, studio time, and NCT 127 prepping for their comeback next month.

“And so when I told her that I couldn’t make it, she wanna argue and say that I do nothing for her, like are you serious?”

“Now that’s disrespectful,” Johnny replied as he listened to her rant about her co-worker.

“It’s really the fact that we barely talk and she always gives me looks but always expects me to do things for her. Like ma’am… you’re not my boss!”

Johnny nods along as Nia got out all of her frustrations, trying to refrain from telling a joke. He’s not trying to get cursed out.

“Ugh, I just wanna quit this job!”

“Do it then, duh.”

“Nigga shut up,” Nia laughed.

Johnny stopped walking and had to take in what she just said to him. She's never said the n word in front of him. Things are changing now. Are they more comfortable with him now? Have to be. The privilege that he has… this is a real game-changer. I mean he’s not new to it, but still, the word coming from Nia for the first time in front of him changes their relationship.

Oh, how will the other members feel, because he’s sure that since Nia is starting to say the n word in front of him then she probably started saying it in front of the boys. Or has she already been saying it in front of them? Hmmmm…

It took a second for him to shrug it off and catch up to her as she didn’t even notice he stopped.

“So anyway, what we eating later?”

Yuta:

“YUUUUUTAAAAA”

Victoria ran into Yuta and Taeil's shared room with a pout on her face. Yuta looked up from his phone to see her in the doorway. He was alone in his room as Taeil was hanging out with the other members on the lower floor. Victoria went towards his bed and belly-flopped on it.

“What’s wrong now?”

“Nothing…”

Yuta shook his head and went back to whatever he was doing on his phone. She started to drag her body over to his and cling onto him. He paid no mind to her behavior as this isn’t something new in the two’s relationship. They sat in silence for a while, Victoria listening to his breathing and Yuta going to different apps to entertain himself. For a moment, he thought that she fell asleep until she started to make weird noises.

“I’m hungry. Feed me.”

“What do you want?”

“It doesn’t matter to me.”

This made Yuta roll his eyes. Of course Victoria didn’t know what she wanted to eat. He ignored her and went back to what he was doing. Victoria waited for a moment, thinking that he would at least text the group chat if there was something quick that she could eat, but alas he just sat on Instagram. Victoria huffed and waited for a reaction. Nope, he’s still ignoring her. She huffed again, hoping that he’d eventually get annoyed and get up to the kitchen. It worked last time so why not do it again. But again, Yuta ignored her existence. She started to pat his arm to a random beat, but instead of annoying Yuta, he wrapped an arm around her and patted her butt with the same beat. Victoria pout turned into a frown, brows furrowed.

“Yuuutaaaaa!”

“Hmmm?”

“FEE-”

Before she could get the rest of her demand out, he covered Victoria's mouth and started to laugh at the girl's misery. She licked his hand but he still kept it on her mouth.

“YUTTAAAA,” Victoria's voice was muffled. She tried to push his hand off and eventually she succeeded.

“Clearly you’re not hungry if you don’t know what you want to eat.”

“Are you serious nigga?”

Yuta looked down at Victoria. Did she just….

“What did you call me?”

“I called you a nigga, nigga!”

“A nig-“

“STOP!”

“A ni-“

“YUTA,” Victoria hit him on his arm. “I swear to God if you say it, I’m leaving you and getting you cancelled.”

Yuta looked at her for a moment with a mischievous look. She glared at him. Is he about to… nah he’s not that bold. Oh wait, yes he is.

“NIG-“ and before he could finish, Victoria went to hit him but he started to run out of the room.

“YUTA, GET BACK HERE BITCH!”

‘Mimi,’ you call out to Amelia using her sort of pet name you and Jaehyun had subconsciously given her.

Amelia tears her eyes away from her toy, the kind where you match up the plastic shapes with the holes. She stares at you blankly, annoyed at how you’d interrupted her playtime.

‘Mama is just going into the kitchen, okay?’

‘You’ve got to stop trying to force her to speak,’ a low voice came from behind you, ‘she will do it when she’s ready.’

Amelia’s head perks up at the sound of her father, and she immediately drops the green plastic square on the floor, quickly crawling over to him, holding her arms up.

Jaehyun scoops her up, kissing her head and sort of resting his nose against it. You knew he liked the smell of their heads, so this wasn’t a rare sight.

‘I’m impatient though,’ you whined, ‘and I want her to say mama and not dada.’

Jaehyun chuckles lowly, ‘Mimi is a daddy’s girl. I’m sure she’ll say dada first.’

‘Yeah right.’

‘You wanna bet?’ Jaehyun raises his eyebrows, just as Amelia starts squirming around in his arms, ‘okay, okay, fine, let’s go have dinner, alright?’

You follow them both into the kitchen where Alissa is already in her high chair, bouncing and kicking her legs in anticipation for her food. She takes notice of her sister, getting even more excited.

‘See, Lissa, Mimi is here now! So food won’t be 2 minutes,’ Jaehyun puts Amelia into her own chair, where she slides in perfectly.

‘Muh,’ Alissa yells.

‘Calm down Liss,’ you gently scold.

Jaehyun turns around, holding two plates with cheese and crackers on them.

‘There you go angels,’ the plastic plates make a a small clanging noise when Jaehyun places them down, both girls grabbing the cheese with their chubby little hands.

‘Is that nice, Mimi?’ You grin as she shoves the cheese into her mouth, drool leaking down onto her My Melody bib.

‘They go so quiet when we give them food,’ Jaehyun laughs, ‘so fickle.’

Alissa decides to go for the crackers first, chomping down on them, crumbs exploding down her own bib.

‘More for us to vacuum up when they’re done,’ Jaehyun complains with a smirk, ‘its like they do it on purpose.’

You yawn loudly, head lolling onto Jaehyun’s shoulder. You feel like a bit of a mess, hair unwashed and unbrushed, your t-shirt covered in random stains from the girls. Jaehyun of course always looks stunning, although slightly disheveled with messy hair. His arms are warm around you, and you yawn again, just watching your two girls eat their food.

‘You go have a nap baby,’ Jaehyun hums, kissing the side of your head.

‘I can’t just leave you to look after them alone,’ you protest, wiping away the tears that come from your eyes with the yawning.

‘Hey, you spend enough time taking care of them by yourself. Even if it’s just for an hour, go and lie down.’

At that moment, Amelia drops a block of cheese onto the floor.

‘Eh-‘ she tries to peer over the tray to locate it, but when she realises it’s out of reach, her face twists up, and you know she’s about to cry.

‘No, Amelia, it’s ok, see look,’ without picking up the now inedible cheese, you take another piece from her plate and hold it out to her. While she’s distracted, Jaehyun picks up the other bit from the floor and tosses it into the bin.

Amelia calms down after being given the replacement, her red face slowly going back to normal as she takes deep breaths.

’See, Mimi, everything is fine! have a drink sweetheart,’ you hold out her sippy cup, which she takes.

‘Mimi,’ a small voice echos, prompting you and Jaehyun to stop in your tracks.

‘Huh?’

‘What did she just say?’

‘Mimi,’ Alissa repeats, staring dead at her older sister.

‘Oh my god-‘ you gasp, ‘Jae, that counts as a word right?’

Jaehyun seems ironically completely lost for words, a proud smile spreading across his face.

‘Mimi, eh, me. me.’

‘Well done Lissa!’ You exclaim, clapping and jumping up and down.

‘Good job baby girl,’ Jaehyun lifts her out of the chair, spinning her around gently while smothering her in kisses. Alissa, forever a daddy’s girl shrieks happily.

Amelia whines in jealousy, and you respond by picking her up as well.

‘It’s ok that you haven’t said your first word yet, I’m so proud of you too.’

like i mentioned earlier my biases are gyuvin and taerae! it's funny because i was battling between the two trying to figure out which one i wanted to bias. whenever i decided on gyuvin, id get so many taerae edits on my fyp, then when i switched to taerae id get a bunch of gyuvin edits. but hey, the more the merrier right? can never have too many biases hehe. but through zb1 i definitely gained so much more love for yujin, as i didn't follow him too closely on bp.

jaemin: rarely smokes weed but when he does it has to be in a big circle with all his friends, calls it "bonding time" and uses the excuse of being stoned to kiss and cuddle everyone despite their refusal, makes up really weird topics to talk about, at one point will just zone out and stare at the ceiling for 10 mins

yangyang: haechan 2.0, everyone thinks he's a stoner but he isn't, peer pressured into it every time but doesn't mind 'cause he thinks it fits his street cred

shotaro & sungchan: can't tell, i don't know much about them

chenle: johnny's number one student and you can't tell me otherwise. has like 7 "guys" around town he's on first name basis with. fucking weed connoisseur, can roll a perfect blunt in less than a minute. fuck i wanna smoke with him sooo bad, he'd be so much fun. wants to do stupid shit when high, not allowed access to the kitchen or the balcony for that reason. prefers tobacco over industrial cigs 'cause he's the main character

jisung: wants to try smoking weed but too anxious to actually do it. loves watching everyone else get stoned though, thinks it's hilarious
