The goal of feminism is not to reverse the gender hierarchy. The goal of feminism is not to eradicate half the population.

The goal of feminism is gender equality.

If you legitimately believe that men, as a group, are uniformly and unequivocally bad just on the basis of their identity, something they cannot control, and that, due to that, they cannot be trusted, ever? If you believe that only women are trustworthy or good and men and inherently bad, then you do not believe in some of the very basic foundations of gender equality.

And like. The belief that women are inherently trustworthy and good is also bad. Like, I kinda thought it was common sense that putting somebody up on a pedestal is bad because it has one of two possibilities: a) the possibility to set them up for failure (because no person is perfect, always good and pure, and everyone makes mistakes), and b) the possibility to provide abusers with shields; if you believe women don’t abuse people, even if it’s not an explicit belief, guess what you’re more vulnerable for?

And these thought patterns aren’t just anti-feminist. They’re pretty bad for multigender people, too. I’m genderfluid, but on average I am usually somewhat a man and somewhat a woman, just in varying degrees. So when you say that all men are evil, am I to assume you think people like me are, too? If yes, that seems pretty cold-hearted. I am not benefiting from the patriarchy; I am intersex and transfemasc. I am androgynous in a visibly trans way. In a misogynists’ mind, I’m not a man or a woman, I’m a thing. If no… why make an exception for me? It feels like you’re erasing my identity as a man— just because I am a woman does mean I am not a man.

If what you mean when you talk about these things is that men have to be aware of their societal position with respect to the patriarchy and vigilant for unconstructed misogyny? Then say that. Don’t say you wish men would die, don’t make fun of gay men and bi women’s attraction to men, don’t say vile shit about trans men just because you think it’s ‘punching down.’

the thing that makes me so annoyed about pinterest is that its made up mostly of kids who were regarded as so funny in kindergarten for whatever reason and internalized that as their only personality trait and later saw tumblr screenshots and because they didn't have any actual natural humor they decided the real way to be funny is just to be insanely hostile and #random to complete strangers. if I have to see one more kid repeating the "theres a headless corpse in the dumpster behind payless" joke on random comments from people who don't care, i'm gonna explode. please. please just look into how to develop social skills. there are worksheets free online I promise its okay to use them.

part 2 of what makes pinterest annoying is that nobody on that website knows what bait is and takes everything completely seriously and at face value and has absolutely no critical thinking skills and doesn't know how to absorb information and create their own opinions based off of that, they just believe everything they're told as long as it makes a little bit of sense to them. it doesn't have to make sense in the real world (ex: people identifying as animesexual or furries demanding litter boxes in school bathrooms), it just has to be ridiculous so they can react strongly to the idea rather than the actual reality of it. its also a dangerous mindset when you get real deep into it because it means they take whatever bait they can - and that's a tactic. there's tons of people who comment stuff on tiktoks like "fat women can't pull off short skirts or crop tops" or "you can't dance i bet you can't do this provocative dance" and they take the bait so easily because they've been taught that its funny to #own bigots and idiots online, and being funny is more important being safe. its genuinely horrifying.

omg the bait thing is so real. like people just farm outrage clicks and comments to get more traction and views, you see this a lot on facebook and twitter too, like someone saying something very obviously egregious and millions of people flood the comments in a huff. or they do that thing where they're like "omg people are so stupid how do you not know that miami is the capital of florida", which is just BEGGING for people to go into the comments to correct them like "ummm actually the capital of florida is tallahassee so actually you're stupid", falling into the OP's engagement trap hook, line, and sinker. its very competitive, people don't know how to let things go, they HAVE TO correct and one-up others and feel smarter than them, even when other people have commented the same thing already. they have to let their voice be known, even if its saying the exact same thing as thousands of others. individualism at its finest.

I will only be addressing this anon as to help other people identify when someone is posting inflammatory, transmisogynistic bullshit. Lets make it a little fun though, shall we?

I have a wonderful volunteer clown for today's lesson! They were so eager to wear a mask, I thought I'd give them something a bit more colorful.

Here we have a clear classification of Baitax Indo Silentium - Bait into Silence. A real and not at all humorous latin term that I just made up to illustrate a point. This asks serves to be Bait, Harassment to both me and Avery (though largely Avery), and to shut down my own voice on what happened to her. Here are the main elements to the clown's bait. 1 - Framing. This is more circumstantial, but the clown used whatever name would paint Avery in the worst light. Literally shortening her old blog title 'Predstrogen' to 'Pred' to make her sound. Well. More predatory. It immediately soured the taste of the seltzer this sad little comedian sprayed in my face.

2 - Misgendering. Plain and simple. Dehumanizing trans women is a common tactic for terfs and bigots everywhere. Our clown was not very subtle in hiding the true colors painted boldly on their tiny car.

3 - Callout Culture. Tries to make the conversation about a list of 'crimes' to accuse Avery of. This is a particularly popular tool in the ongoing harassment campaign against Avery and trans women online at large. 'She's a sexual deviant', the clown honks. This is made to put the targeted woman and anyone who stands with her on the defensive, and to isolate her by punishing anyone who would try to stand up for her.

If you see accusations like this and find yourself reflexively assuming guilt, or even that there is something to defend, that's the little clown in your ear whispering to you. Swat it off your shoulder. Callout culture has done so much to target and wipe trans women off the internet.

4 - Puritan Behavior. Not only is our beloved clown clumsy, unfunny, and tells some horribly bigoted jokes, they also want to add sex work to the callout post. I make this its own specific point because our fool clearly stole their material from terfs/swerfs. Demonizing Avery for her sex work is nothing new. It never has been- not for any woman.

5- Appeal to Authority. I am woefully underread on logical fallacies, but this one sticks out brighter than the fake flower on their suit. 'If she broke the TOS, she deserves whatever happens to her'.

Not only does this attempt to make okay the previous and ongoing sexual harassment Avery endured, it also tries to limit the conversation by what tumblr does or doesn't think is okay. Don't let people box you in like this! Especially not Mx. Banana Cream Pie over here.

That's about all I really feel I have to teach about our volunteer today. They are a terf and a swerf- if not in name then certainly in action. I doubt I will be answering or addressing any other hate mail I get.

The Rundown:

  Hiya, I’m Void / Aki! This blog is a remade version of an older one...as well as reworked from what it used to be. I am constantly learning to understand myself better, learn new things, and make friends.

   Feelings of being nonhuman have persisted since I was young, and... This is me putting it to a semi-active blog, to stretch those sides of me out, and be in a community that knows what it’s like [to have had similar experiences].

   There’s still more to say, but I'd rather keep this short. I’ll put a bit of extra information under the cut- the stuff I feel like sharing- and... Yeah, hope you enjoy being around here!

TL;DR of Rules: Don’t be an asshole. No discourse, at all, no exceptions. TERFs and queerphobes, bigots, anti-kin, stay off my blog. I unfollow/block to my tastes; it’s not that deep if it happens. I’m not consistently on this blog nor have much spoons, pls be patient with me. (I’m not ignoring you.) Please don’t assume things about me; ask if curious, sure, but I’ll (system included) bring up if I need advice on anything.   So the short of it... Always had alterhuman-like experiences, starting with Pokemon when I was in elementary school. A persistent, but subtle connection to wolves...and a connection to felines that has never stopped. If anything, only got more active with time.

    I found the fickin community first, through OFFkin, but eventually that made its way to finding therians and otherkin. Kinda been at home ever since, if very quietly; lurking for years, on and off.

   As of July 2022 (the time of me originally writing this), I’ve been self-Dx’ing as plural. To keep it short, I’ve already taken the MID with my current therapist, and we’re both working on getting me to a specialist. In the meantime, I continue to research, read other peoples’ experiences, and speak with my therapist about my experiences, but I’m unsure of when/if a professional diagnosis will happen.

   For now, I, again, use plural terms to describe my mental experiences and those I communicate with in there, but... Only time and a professional can tell, I suppose.

[ There’s still quite a lot of denial in here, but I’m working to accept it. Doubt has only created further damage, and I function better utilizing system-based tips. ]

People generally understand that toxic behavior isn’t ok just because it has its origins in trauma. Like being a misogynist or a terf isn’t ok because you had bad experiences with members of the opposite gender for example. And generally we get that if you treat people like shit, they’re allowed to be mad at you.

But as soon as you say hating on a religion because of religious trauma isn’t ok, suddenly that’s insensitive somehow. Like, I’m supposed just grin and bear it while people talk shit about my most cherished beliefs and customs because people from my faith have been horrible to them.

Fuck that shit.

Look, I’m genuinely sorry for what happened to you and disgusted with the people responsible but that doesn’t mean I’m gonna take that shit lying down. You’re not exempt from judgement for your shitty behavior because of trauma. You’re no better than the people you claim to hate because you assume that everyone similar to them because of other factors. No form of bigotry is intrinsic to any group that isn’t explicitly founded on said bigotry. And no, whatever religion you’re thinking about right now was not founded on bigotry as a major tenet. Not Islam, not Christianity, not Judaism, not Hinduism, not Buddhism, not Zoroastrianism, none of them.

The antitheists I’ve encountered tend to come in two forms. One type hates all religions and paints them with the same brush, one type only opposes specific religions. They hate each other.

Type one is your typical militant atheist who reads Richard Dawkins and thinks some stuffy old British guy understands every culture enough that if he paints them all with the same brush, they don’t need to look any further. The irony of these people claiming to stand for equality and understanding and tearing down the oppressive institutions of the past is truly astonishing. It’s literally just good old fashioned European colonialism except that you’re saying your religion is bad too. Just ignore the fact that all of the traditions you hold dear and the majority of ideas considered foundational to your “secular” society were developed by Christians in a predominantly Christian culture with Christian ideas ingrained in their way of life who cited Christian scripture in their writings.

Of course it just so happens that every idea from another that sounds strange or superstitious or pointless to you, any holiday with odd sounding festivities who’s significance you don’t get, any common social customs that seem “restrictive” even if it’s fully egalitarian, any lack of interest in common foodstuffs traditionally not within their dietary laws, any ideas that are extremely in line with ideas like tolerance and liberty and egalitarianism, even any ideas that are exactly like yours but that people took the time to justify with their faith, just as the people who introduced it to you did, is the product of religious indoctrination. A relic of the past they’d be better off without. You just need to enlighten them. Never mind that these are cherished customs hurt no one and may even help them in the same way yours help you. They not like us, they’re not “enlightened”.

One laughable thing that I’ve seen countless antitheists like say if you take offense to their rhetoric is “well it’s not just YOUR religion. I make fun of/hate ALL religions!” Even without the biases above, how is you hating other religions supposed to make you BETTER? You’re just an even bigger bigot. You suck even more!

Type two tends to say that while they don’t hate religion in general, they hate ONE in particular. Now, you may be asking, how is that any different from plain old discrimination? How is that any different than your conservative uncle who hates Muslims?

That’s a good question! And I’d love to hear an answer from them that makes some fucking sense!

See these people aren’t any different from the Trump supporters who wanted a Muslim ban in the States, but they SAY they are because THIS religion is the bad one! No for real, it’s totally legit! Bro trust me!

These people fancy themselves progressives. Usually they target whatever religion is dominant in their region. Whichever one they hear cited when people justify reactionary beliefs. That’s obviously The Bad One. All the others are just misunderstood. No other religion has these issues.

And then when you point out that other cultures with different religions totally have a lot of the same issues, and all of them have several unique ones that other religions don’t have, just like The Bad One, suddenly you’re deflecting! How dare you bring up problems other cultures have when our culture also has problems! Ignore that pertinent information or you’re a xenophobic bigot!

These antithesists unsurprisingly often find themselves allying with reactionaries from other religions that hate the same one. Hate Christianity? Side with far right extremists and governments in the Middle East! They HATE Christianity! And also a lot of other religions that face just as harsh persecution but you know, details. They’re over there, Christianity affects ME PERSONALLY. Yeah I saw Hamas flying Swastikas and establishing ties with Neo Nazis, but they oppose Israel! Which is mainly Jewish, not Christian, but I never bothered to learn the difference!

It goes the other way too. There are indeed a lot of ex-Muslims, for example, who back reactionary politicians in non-Muslim nations because they hate the religion for similar reasons people hate Christianity. We don’t look fondly on them here in the West because the horrors of Islamophobia are well known. The idea of Christianity facing the same issues abroad is treated as absurd despite countless cases of it world wide. But that’s what they think of Islam too.

The ultimate paradox of antitheism is that it nearly universally claims to support progress and the breaking down of barriers between peoples and an end to ethnic discrimination, while also being a fundamentally colonialist and ethnocentric mindset. They wish to aggressively spread non-religion just as the colonialists of the past did with their own faiths. After all, why not? Our way is the better way, shouldn’t everyone else be like us?

Dave Chappelle LIED About Daphne Dorman

Well damn. This is interesting. It's almost as if we shouldn't take the word of an aging aggrieved comedian who tokens a trans woman to hide behind to make transphobic "jokes" then complains being criticized for what they say contributing to that transphobia.

Oh but we triggered trannies are just too sensitive and don't understand the complex nuance of Dave's craft... Give me a fucking break. I watched the whole special and it didn't impress me much, in fact it made Dave C. seem more ignorant of trans people and trans issues.

So in the wake of the backlash "team TERF" Dave tries to play like a canceled victim when people got upset over what he said in his special. Why are edgy comedians these untouchable people that dare not be criticized or its the end of free speech or whatever? I never wanna see a free speech absolutist type comedian get offended by anything lol! Wouldn't that be funny if they did? Does irony beget irony?

Dave didn't get canceled, a black queer Netflix employee was fired though. Very BLM of Netflix by the way. Of course that Netflix employee "deserved" to be fired as they "leaked" info which didn't happen as Netflix said it did so naturally everyone believes the white cishet Netflix heads over black queer people; people that Dave Chappelle refused to address the existence of in his special framing the LGBTQ+ community as this white-owned and white controlled group which is just beyond irresponsible and intellectually lazy.

Nobody is ever held accountable for their shitty behavior at Netflix regarding transphobia and then gaslight us into oblivion, fire people who disagreed with Dave's stand-up special all in hopes to silence the naysayers and trans people in general.

Trying to cancel Dave's special (which I don't agree with) only emboldens the rightwingers fears who hate trans people with a passion already, claiming that the big mean left or evil LGBTQ community loves to cancel people for no reason or cancel anyone over trans/gay jokes... Again, more evidence that we're not allowed to have mild disagreements, criticize, or be angry at cisgender heterosexuals even if we might be wrong on something so the bigots just paint us all as some mindless angry liberal mob to justify their bigotry disguised as free speech.

But isn't it interesting that Dave Chappelle misled people and/or exaggerated about Daphne being "dragged" on twitter (ya know, that non-real place Dave calls it unless it's someone praising him) to be one of the sole reasons that led to Daphne's suicide despite there being no actual proof of this? Makes you wonder what else Dave doesn't actually know or has misled people to believe because he's such a defenseless victim with a massive platform after all. Very unfair you see. Dave Chappelle is an attention seeking moron to my mind raking in the Netflix cash cuz controversy sells.

Thank you, my friend! I’m so glad you like my blog, and that it’s finding all the right people.

Here are some tips for you, you lovely transformer:

1. Remember they are in the wrong. I know that seems super obvious, but if you hear something enough times, no matter how wrong it is, it might make just enough sense to fool you into thinking that you’re the one being foolish or ignorant. But the LGBTQ+ community and the scientific community are both on your side (despite what some bullshit articles may say).

2. Do something that makes you feel good about yourself. For me, a shower does the trick, but I know that seeing your own body in its entirety may not be an option for you. In that case, try putting your body in action. See yourself as a tool of creation rather than ornament for others or yourself to look at. Make yourself a moving art form by working out, drawing, sculpting, playing a game, cosplaying, or whatever you like to do!

3. Put something comfortable on. This may mean a dress, or a suit, or a hoodie, or a large t-shirt, or anything else you love having in your closet. Depending on how you feel, you may prefer comfort over looking fancy, so do whichever is right for you!

4. Go to your safe space. This doesn’t just mean physically and mentally - it also applies to your presence online. I know it may seem tempting to constantly advocate against people who hate your very existence, because you think that not doing so means you’re not willing to fight for your values. WRONG. The internet simply isn’t a great place for terf/bigot education. I do it because I just like doing debates and showing the holes in their logic and making them red in the face. It’s not an obligation, nor is it their right to get a response from you.

5. Consume comfort content. YouTube videos, movies, shows, books, plays, games…whatever makes you happy. There’s so much pain and strife in the real world that we can’t control or fix. Sometimes stepping into a fictional world for a while not only calms one down enough to look at our issues more clearly, but it can also provide a world for us to work things out through fictional scenarios. And this isn’t even mentioning the many communities you can join surrounding your favorite content!

6. Take a break from bigotry. Take a step back, no matter where the hate is coming from. I know the holidays can be difficult, especially with visiting in-laws and extended family. You may have to conform for a while, either to keep yourself safe or because you were pressured to. Before that happens, or among the chaos of any current hate, make sure to take time for yourself. Go out with friends, listen to music, go to your room, or even spend some time outside. Don’t spend your off-time pretending to be someone your not, if at all possible.

7. Call someone. If things start to get really, really bad, and you don’t know what to do, call a friend, parent, grandparent, or whoever is included in your support system. If your support system isn’t possible (or is nonexistent), calling the Trevor Project (212-695-8650), who you can text or call, depending on how safe it is to talk about your struggles. I am also available to talk or answer questions, but I might not get to you as fast, so I may not be the best choice for a crisis.

Hot Take of the Day

A lot of activism on Tumblr is highly performative and invests its energy in the wrong places.

Now, I'm saying this as someone who has yet to receive mass waves of cancelation (that I know of anyway), as I try to tread lightly; this take is coming from an outsider-looking-in perspective. I caution to add this because I know this is probably going to bait a lot of people into coming at this post in hostility, thinking I'm just here to vaguely whine about facing consequences.

But I have observed particular behaviors on Tumblr. I'll see people commenting on whatever post crosses my dash or sending anons lambasting someone for, say, expressing confusion over someone's gender identity or sexuality, or writing an ambiguous "he/she/they" statement but leaving out "ze" or a dozen others, or reclaiming a slur towards their own identity on their own blog. The crowd goes completely apeshit with arming themselves over Nonbinary or Bisexual or Asexual Erasure, etc.

But then you go over to an actual personal blog for, say, a trans individual, and 90% of the comments on their recent selfies or the asks they respond to are from TERFs accusing them of invading women's spaces or preying on gay men, while the Tumblr Activist crowd is radio silent.

Now, on the one hand you could argue that the activist crowd can't reasonably be everywhere at once. On the other though, how do these TERFs keep finding them so quick?

Disproportionate energy is invested in attacking people who want to be educated, compared to combating actual bigotry.

Which is extremely terrible optics for several reasons: not only can bigots brush off criticism as "these SJWs just want to cancel anyone and my card happened to be up" or even point to the foaming-at-the-mouth hostility as reason to refute activism ("They'll come for you too!"), but it also wins no allies from fence-sitters who may not be aware how deep the pool is that they're dipping their toes into. We're in an era where open hostility from bigots is phasing out in favor of backhanded acceptance ("Call yourself and wear whatever you want!"), concern trolling ("I'm just really worried about all the lesbians disappearing!"), loaded truisms ("All I said is that sex is real!") and other dogwhistles, all more palatable to laymen and uninformed audiences who only see the surface level of an issue or don't make efforts to digest them on their own. Eventually those little things can start to seem like common sense to the masses, which can make it a lot easier to push back when addressed, no matter how correct you actually are.

There's an adage called Hanlon's Razor: "Attribute not to malice that which can be adequately explained by ignorance." If we make a genuine effort to educate people first, we can better gauge who is coming from a place of malice should they push back.

And also, practice what you preach y'all. Spend less time complaining about "contributing to erasure" on someone else's behalf, and more of it elevating the voices of people being erased. If the conversation about, for instance, Nonbinary Representation is being led largely by Binary activists, it becomes disingenuous.

a summary of the whole contrapoints thing from someone who has been spending most of her time on twitter and seen it first-hand throughout

(im using screenshots, some ive downloaded from trusted twitter mutuals and some ive made myself. since i have the shinigami eyes extension and many of my twitter mutuals dont, some scs will be inconsistent. i have checked each downloaded sced tweet to make sure theyre real.)

please dont try to start an argument on this post, im just summarising whats happened. ive already argued myself out over on my twitter and whatever point youre trying to make has literally already been said 20 times before.

Basically in late august/september natalie said some inflammatory shit about pronouns and nbs and “binary transes” which she’d said stuff along the lines of in the past. both nb and binary trans folks have criticised her lightly for this kind of attitude in the past as well. she has a pattern of behaviour (including being very...lenient towards terfs) but the stuff she was saying and the bad takes were tolerable, if incorrect and a little ignorant. what she said this time was basically “asking for pronouns in trans spaces is good i guess but it hurts passing/semi-passing transes like me” which is a take that makes no goddamn sense and is extremely ignorant towards both nb folks and trans folks who do not have the luxury of even trying to pass. she exaggerates the actual effect it has on her as well. basically the entire tweet reads really badly (the discussion was about asking for pronouns in trans spaces):

peter coffin made some batshit crazy takes (as usual) including inventing the term “enby cultural capital” which he refused to actually evaluate on past asking people to read a book (if you cant clarify your point on your own then you have an issue). he started tweeting like a madman and making it painfully clear how hard he will go to bats for natalie despite him being nb himself (many people joked/suspected  that its because he wants to fuck her, same with philosophytube, and honestly looking at how they see her that isnt hard to believe).

natalie went off twitter for a while, eventually leaving an apology that was actually alright and made me and several others believe she would return a little more understanding of trans intra-community issues, especially in terms of class because she has always had an issue with ignorance from that angle. she said she had a friend called gwen taking over (nobody knows who this is nor had they ever heard of this friend, leaving some people suspicious that she may have made her up. im not going to confirm or deny this because i have no clue.)

idk what peter coffin was up to because at this point i and most ppl had officially stopped listening to him but i believe he was angrily tweeting about cancel culture. a lot of people were as well, even though the bulk of the criticisms of natalie had been written and expressed in a mature, appropriate way. some of my twitter mutuals who had been involved in discussing natalie’s past trends with these issues as well as her lack of class consciousness and (probably) accidental antisemitism began to get messages from what was very clearly alt-right trolls trying to doxx natalie. it was real information, which is extremely concerning, but no person published it and her criticisers that got those dms were vocal about not bullying or doxxing natalie. natalie wasn’t pushed away because of “cancel culture”, and “cancel culture” really isnt a real thing and many contra fans believed this too until she came under criticism, which highlights a pretty weird mentality but whatever.

anyway, she came back this week with a new video titled “opulence” which i dont care for watching so i just read about it from my twitter mutuals who did. since i didnt watch it ill only summarise its criticisms very basically. 

to put it simply the main criticisms of the video were that she conflated trans aesthetic with literal opulence and class again, which people weren’t a fan of. she talked about her experience over the last few weeks, spinning it her way because how else would she spin it, thats to be expected. it was mostly just the usual contra, flawed takes and a bit of class ignorance...except for one blaring massive issue which is absolutely undeniable proof for where she’s heading with her politics and her content.

on that video, natalie invited infamous transmed, the guy who outed lana wachowski for money, buck angel, to collab with her. this guy is infamous in the trans community for being a cis bootlicking bigot. he makes kalvin garrah look like a lovely guy. he’s been around for a very long time and he’s very famous for being a massive asshole. heres just a taste of the kind of attitude he carries:

contra has previously spoken up about why you shouldn’t platform bigots. so her platforming a bigot has some very very obvious implications.

needless to say, people were and are pretty mad and very disappointed. a large majority of her fans have been against this.

 when oliver (philosophytube) promoted the video on his twitter many replies to his quote tweet were his fans begging him to be even mildly critical of contra. 

on contra’s subreddit (for clarification, natalie isnt a mod there and im not sure about how involved she is on the sub) there was even a thread created in which MANY of her fans on there expressed criticism of contra’s views. the mods then locked the post, deleted comments, and banned the use of the word “truscum” because it was offensive i guess? it was a move very close to “terf is a slur” territory

furthermore, some pretty infamous transphobes have been in support of her and buck angel in the past, including ian miles cheong which is...wow. some of these are scs from a twitter mutual, but the ones with red names are from me - i have the shinigami eyes extension, so basically any person with a red name is a known transphobe (im surprised buck isnt marked yet lol).

A Little About Me

As a rule of thumb, whenever I make an account for debating reasons, I like to make my opinions and some personal information clear and for all to see.

I am a pansexual woman. 

It is the LGBTQIA+ Community not the LGB community. The T is for Trans[sexual/gender/vestite]. The Q is for Queer/Questioning. The I is for Intersex. The A is for Ace or Aro, etc. You don’t get to forget about them just because you’re a bigot. I thought we were past this already. 

Individual communities can exist. And they do. But if your community is purposefully hateful (e.g. it supports eugenics, racism, etc.) then its a toxic one. Someone is bound to criticize it. I know I’m going to. 

Trans people are not a “new invention” and neither are pronouns. Please, if not anything else, when speaking to or debating with me, respect trans people and other people’s pronouns. Even if they are being an ass. They can be an ass with pronouns. You are can be an ass with pronouns. We are can all be assholes with pronouns. Its an easy concept. Low blows are low blows. 

I like to learn stuff. Either teach me with respect to our differing opinions, or fuck off. Source your stuff, or I am not going to believe you. Same goes for me. If I don’t source my own stuff right away, there will be a [source] on the bottom of the post. Please be patient with me.

I am an anarchist. As such, I am left leaning. I think that being an anarcho-capitalist is a bit of an oxymoron in of itself, but whatever.

I think gun control laws and working within your community to discourage gun violence are not mutually exclusive and can happen at the same time in the same place.

Has gatekeeping ever affected which comics you read?  If so, how so?  If not, do you think it could in the future?

You know, I usually don't care about the person behind the work, although there is an exception. During the Twitter Pride Month event if a webcomic creator I'm following says asexuals/pansexuals/non-binary people aren't allowed/can't follow them either due to not being oppressed enough, or not being real LGBT+ people, I will stop reading their work. Afterall, it wouldn't be right since I'm not queer enough to read their work. -coughsarcasmcough- There are instances where I'll still read their comic, but with a feeling of mischievous excitement for doing something "against the rules". Although there will always be this understanding of that person hates me, coupled with a slight feeling of 'yikes' whenever I see their work. Lol It's about the same with any other type of gatekeeping, although admittedly I'm more lax about unfollowing someone if I'm not being targeted since I'm narcissistic like that.

Thats ridiculous to think an author would try to control which demographics can read their work. Artists shoudn't discriminate against certain groups in who can access their art.

It does happen a lot though as all my gatekeeping experiences are about that as well, creators kind of directly shunning a specific demographic (granted not exactly @DanitheCarutor 's experience)

@DanitheCarutor Man I've never seen anything like that. I thought this post was about "only true gamers will understand" comics and such. I guess I'm lucky I've never stumbled into that side of the internet. If someone holds such views and expouses them so loudly i probably wouldn't like what they write, anyways.

To answer the question more thoroughly, there have been plenty of incidents of gatekeeping that have affected how and if I read certain webcomics. However, generally speaking, they come in two specific flavors. Flavor 1: Creators basically pushing for their target audience too aggressively to the point they're either: A) insulting anyone who is not in that target audience or B) dismissing anyone not in that target audience and treating them as someone who isn't a "true" fan. which usually means their opinions are basically treated as auto invalid and not worth anything. B is more the experience I see for this flavor on my end, though honestly I don't think a lot of the creators I see do it on purpose. This particular flavor usually just effects my engagement because I generally just don't want to engage with the work at all if my opinion is going to be auto invalidated anyway. Flavor 2: Creators basically saying "Don't read my comic if you don't 100% agree with my political view(s)." This is a nope for me. A guarantee I will never read that comic again and will immediately mute said creator on my social media - even if I do 100% agree with their specific view. I cannot stand it when people literally cannot tolerate the fact that people who may think the opposite of them (or even have nuanced opinions that aren't full agreement) can still enjoy their work. Out of principle, I will not support this, and out of practicality, the audience that stays after that will probably be equally closed minded and probably not people I want to hang out with on a regular basis anyway.

Who knows, maybe they've actually had weirdos making political comments in their comment sections and they finally had enough one day.

I do know at least one person whose (very non-political) comic has attracted a lot of politically vocal readers, and it has been a source of headache for them for a long time.

Yeah I mean I don't doubt there's some comics. Usually in the little research I've done it wasn't really the comic that was getting view. THey just saw something on social media that made them angry thus had to comment on it.

In the case I'm thinking of, it wasn't that the fans got angry at the creator's views. The fans were just openly talking about that stuff? They didn't seem to understand, nor care, that the creator didn't share their views. It's..... weird is all I can say.

My only guess is the comic got shared in a politically oriented space (forum, a FB group, whatever) and attracted some vocal readers from that space. Maybe.

Possibly, although in my experience it's pretty easy for comment sections to devolve into some random political discussion. People tend to be very passionate about their viewpoints, so it really only takes one person being mad

Though yeah, I have seen it happen too, political wars in some completely non-political comic's comment section

There was a semi-infamous case

The Tiny Hippo comic in which the hippo knifes a raven that stole its toy got littered with Koreans arguing with others about the Korean-Japanese political tension. The comic... has absolutely NOTHING to do with Korea, Japan, or even Asia.

@Eightfish (Puppeteer) Yeah, be prepared if you ever dive into the LGBT+ artist/comic side of Twitter during the Pride Month events. There are far more nice, inclusive people, but the exclusive ones are very loud and make long rant threads. Also you may get someone responding to your promos with nasty shit if you use the hashtag. This has never happened to me personally, but has happened to webcomic creators and illustration artists I follow who are very open about being asexual/non-binary/pansexual.

To be honest, I am usually the one LGBT+ creators keep from reading their work in those scenarios. It has happened before where a creator has said something similar about ace people or hetero people not being allowed to read because "they wouldn't get it." Or sometimes even more offensive. Even if I wasn't both of those things, hearing someone be so exclusive of any group just makes me not want to support them. So yes, haha, I have definitely been affected by gatekeeping.

Theoretically, I can see where gatekeeping can be done in good faith, and possibly even respectfully. Like, there's a reason why support groups for a specific thing only allows people who are directly affected by that specific thing. Trying to educate other people on that issue, and including the allies, those things are extremely important, but a gated safe space is also incredibly valuable. You can do BOTH of those things (just not in the same place at the same time). It can definitely go wrong, though. It really can.

like "we need a safe space for lesbians to talk about their struggles" is not the same thing as "if you're not a lesbian, you don't count as lgbt" (which would be... no???)

I think there is definitely a difference between gatekeeping against bigotry and blanketsweep gatekeeping against a specific group of people that you've stereotyped as bigots

sometimes you need a safe space specifically for that group, and not the supporters of that group. That serves very specific purposes.

@Cronaj (Whispers of the Past) Oh gosh, there is this one artist who's words I remember to this day. During Pride Month they made this looooong thread about how they didn't want ace people following them, how they are not allowed to use the hashtag or even be part of the LGBT+ community, then went on about how they were all just heterosexuals. The they talked about how non-binary people are damaging the trans community with their "fake gender". Very ignorant, very weird, I totally unfollowed them after that even though I really liked their art.

I'm kind of glad about that too. Readers gatekeeping is even worse sometimes in mainstream. So to a degree it makes me glad that the only people hurting a creators work is the creator themself, if that makes sense.

I think when it hits webcomics (cause I won't pretend it won't someday), I think it's gonna be in the same regard where I see it more. In that readers will be saying "If you don't agree this webcomic/ship/something is the best, you're not really a true participant in the webcomic community!"

@Cronaj (Whispers of the Past) It's absolutely important. But one can support both education and gated safe spaces! Like I can totally imagine the same people moderating a gated safe space, and holding educational seminars where everyone is welcome. Those two things serve different functions.

I imagine if it happens with webcomic it will be an extremely popular comic that will have the readerbase size of something mainstream. I've stumbled across a couple small instances where webcomic fans have been gatekeepy about fanart and such, but not real big, crazy instances.

Yeah, a couple of the popular Webtoon webcomics I've followed like Gourmet Hound have had big ship wars in the comments. Actually if you want to see a good example of ship gatekeeping, you can look at any popular romance comic on Weboons, the comment section will probably be insane.

@RebelVampire That's definitely the crappiest part about being on the internet. You can never tell just from reading words, especially if they type in a super anal way like myself most of the time. Personally if I have no idea if a reader is serious I default to responding with a dad joke or a meme... which has caused a few upset responses.

I've learned if I don't know if the person is serious or not to just ask. Sometimes make them grumpy and you get "well obviously i was joking/being serious", but at least saves the headaches of assumptions.

A comic creator I really respected, someone I thought was super supportive of the community at large, made a blanket statement forbidding cishets from joining their big new webcomic server. The server wasn't meant for LGBTQ+ webcomics only - all comics were allowed to be discussed - so it wasn't incredibly stringent on its content, just its membership. I know it's small beans compared to other bits of gatekeeping, but it definitely made some people feel left out, and it made me feel really sad. Made me feel like... even if I somehow became friends with the creator someday, I would always be considered an other/outsider, so... why bother, you know? I haven't really felt like keeping up with their work since. It doesn't quite feel the same. I don't know if had the 'right' reaction, but the experience definitely took off my rose-tinted glasses.

We have been made aware that our latest commentary has elicited a rant.

We would like begin by saying the first half of this rant is not only a misdirect but a lot of personal stuff that is outside our targeted topics of commentary so we shall be skipping that.

I’ve read very little on liminal spaces, magical theory, mythic time, or Dionysus; and yet I’m sitting here, trying to tell my own story and no one else’s, and finding myself describing something that I somehow, recognize as being intimately connected to all of these things at once. “

We must inform you this is very doubtful.  As someone who has crusaded against actual knowledge and those who teach it, study it, and understand it, you suddenly valuing any knowledge you are adamant against giving any sense of importance, this is a contradiction.  We would like to remind you, you have spent years demonizing those who are academically minded, who would possess the best supply of these topics of information.  We need to remind you, you have chased, and guided newcomers away from these very informed and academic individuals with a very glib and dismissive expressions that they are somehow morally and emotionally defective.

We need to remind you, you have spent more posts declaring how unimportant and meaningless academic resources, information, and knowledgeable people who covet such information, that it boggles the mind how you can sit here now and suddenly have an appreciation for information and knowledge.  We must say that is highly convenient, almost like you are a bag of contradictions and hyperbole.

We would like to mention that in every occurrence that knowledge is passed on from a deity it is made obvious that it is given by them.  We would like to remind you, this would be conferred as a minor miracle and the god that granted it would not do so with a cloak and dagger delivery.

We can not believe you, as you complain constantly about how you are incredibly oppressed and put-upon by the evil capitalist misogynistic patriarchy, holding you in a death grip of poverty...strange and fantastic is not the picture you spent years painting.  If you’d like to recant those lies and give a more accurate depiction of your life, feel free, no need to keep up the pretense.

We must inform you this is not gaslighting, and none of this is true.  You’re so buried helplessly in the twisted murky interior of your own ideology that you have bought into all the lies and fables it has generated.  Snap out of it!

We must inform you, you are confused.  These are your actions which you committed upon every community you attempted to infect like herpes.  Anyone who didn’t bow down to every word of your vapid ideology was to be summarily purged.  You created an entire callout blog (which we parody), to bully, harrass and purge people you deem morally corrupt and a heretic to your divinely sanctioned and holy edicts of social justice that must be obeyed to the letter.  You terrorized this community for years with it, dividing it, polarizing it and demonizing our gods, twisting them into these token puppets you can make spit out any words you want to give yourself the squishy feels. 

The only ones who act like southern Baptists or medieval catholic inquisitors, are you and your friends.  Don’t try to backpedal that YOU are the victim here, you are the bully, the aggressor, the one causing harm. 

Some sects of polytheism have actual ancient records detailing proper practices to how their religion is followed.  While following them in personal practice is largely voluntary, they are the methods espoused to have been prescribed by the gods of their own religion.  It’s just respectful to those gods to follow such practices.

”Because of all this, polytheists are perfectly willing to bully, threaten, gaslight, and otherwise abuse young, vulnerable people in their midst who even for one minute threaten their perceived “respectability” in the eyes of the mainstream and of their favorite Big Name Pagans. More about us.  You must love us dearly.  We must inform you, again you are entirely wrong.  You literally told Set in that interview post, you would start a cult.  You adhere to a collectivist ideology that operates on the concept of original sin and so everyone of that group must atone for the sins of the group for every instance in history.  You follow an ideology that abhors individual worth and thought over the group opinion and the group’s collective thought, in which any dissent and the individual will be sacrificed to ensure purity of the group.  You operate like a wanna-be cult leader who wants a cult.

You have done alot of evil in this community and you called it righteous because your ideology decrees it must be.  Your every action is dictated by it, your every thought is shaped by it to the point you declared that a god who historically always supported a theocratic monarchy...suddenly fell in love with socialism/communism...an inherently destructive and genocidal form of government and philosophy.  One that has claimed over 100 million lives, and more?!  That is alot ot buy, smarmy, a LOT to buy.  We didn’t even mention how he just outright confirms all your political points, thoughts, beliefs, and heralds them as divinely sanctioned?!  We don’t have to know how the stove top makes the coil red hot to understand touching it will burn.--Memphis

We see you have again mistaken UPG for something provable.  If you had written that interview and stated that you wrote Set’s dialogue intuitively, or you interpreted them, rather then composed the transcript verbatim...we’d have been more lenient with our criticisms.  We point out, every word of his dialogue was verbatim your own, that you have ranted about for the years.  Every bit, from his diction, to his syntax, from tone to word choices was entirely from your own and not from an external source.  The fact it entirely vindicates every word of your political tripe, your beliefs and ideology, to the decimal place, is evidence that it’s not from any external source, or external spiritual entity but from you.  This was a complete fiction.

My colleagues have added much to these particular points of your diatribe, but I’ll add my bit here. While it seems like you may be in a better place physically (despite claiming you know more about psychology and medicine than your previous doctors do), you seem to be going down a dark, dangerous road mentally. You might just find yourself in jail yet, or worse if you don’t reevaluate your thinking.

I would also recommend you be very, very careful using THC. I don’t know what medications you’re taking, but THC can interact with several different drugs, including Prozac. High levels of THC can cause paranoia and psychosis as well. 

You’re trying to act as a leader and activist when you’re still dealing with some very serious conditions. This is why so many people recommend to not use magic or occultic practices when dealing with mental health. People are not being elitist or ableist when they do this. The whole purpose is to encourage others to first attain treatment for their conditions. You’ve been claiming your own voice as Set’s, threatening violence to attain your desires in regards to politics, and using magic to harm your political enemies. You refuse to understand the motivations of people who don’t hold the same political opinions - even “centrists”, so that even the politically moderate are your enemies. This is even a symptom of borderline personality disorder, which you say you’re diagnosed with. Clearly, your symptoms aren’t completely managed.

You have a long way to go in terms of healing. You can blame the outside world all you like for not getting treatment or for a lack of progress, but your mental health is YOUR responsibility and you need to take responsibility and fix yourself before you’re in any position to try and “fix” the world with your ideology.

I highly encourage you to take a break and get some further professional help; wherever you are and however you can get it. Your writings are extremely troubling to us here. The last thing you need is to get arrested or committed trying to “punch a Nazi” or “take down the system”. You’re going to really screw up any chances of getting on your feet, getting treatment, and doing something actually meaningful with your life if you continue down this road.

See what’s happening in the world and what the trans movement is doing to women, then come talk to me. One real-life example: Vancouver Rape Relief lost its city funding because of its women-only policy, so trans activists lobbied politicians to no end to strip women of this very important resource even though there are other rape crisis centers that accepted them.
