I need Sam Winchester ten inches deep in Gabriel sucking on his throat and making that guy whimper and moan because it’s so good and Sam gets a little power high from having an archangel fall apart under him and his eyes shimmer yellow with a long dormant power, or maybe it’s just a trick of the light dancing off the hazel of his eyes, and the last horrifying thought racing through Gabriel’s head before Sam makes him cum is Asmodeus

This is a scene for a little angst oneshot I've tilted as Heaven's Cost. It would take place in the same universe as Chain On Your Neck. It came about because, thinking logically about it, I couldn't imagine Heaven agreeing to allow Charlie to speak with Sera, let alone go to Heaven, without their being some kind of payment out of Lucifer. So this is a post episode tag to Dad Beat Dad.
I also refuse to believe this walking piece of trauma does not in fact have any sort of feelings about his once home, or his once family.
It does feature 'Azreal' as an OC, because familial / brotherly angst and betrayal is the good shit and since this is Lucifer Morningstar...I wanted to drag in something that could potentially tie to his past. I know its popular to include the main three -- Raphael, Gabriel, and Michael -- but I went with Azreal in this for a few reasons.
One: the exterminations deal with a permanent end to souls, so any an angel of death whose existence is about the placement of souls seemed to fit.
Two: I doubt Lucifer would actually want to talk to Michael, Raphael, or Gabriel if they were at any way involved in his being cast out, as I can see them as potentially having been closest before his fall. Whereas Azreal would be more of a fringe sibling.
Yes, Azreal is a bit insensitive. Yes, Azreal is an asshole. I have done this on purpose.
There is nothing about this that is otherwise religiously accurate and I don't want it to be. I'm not in this for the bible fanfiction, thank you. Not sure how many scenes this will ultimately be, but for now I have at least 3 planned.
As always, scene below cut.
--
The minute he was back within his palace Lucifer slumped over and pressed his hands into his face with a loud and frustrated groan. He can’t believe he said he would get Charlie a meeting with Heaven. What had he been thinking? He knows, he knows that Heaven was not going to be amenable to this. They won’t want to listen to Charlie, to what she wanted, to what she had to propose. They never wanted to listen, before. They weren’t going to listen, now. Lucifer dug his fingers into his hair and tried to breathe. He had promised Charlie that he would get her an audience with Heaven, which meant Lucifer had to get her an audience with Heaven. His hands shook as he stumbled his way to the nearest armchair and worked to fish out his phone from his pocket. He would have to make the call, have to reach out to someone in Heaven. His first thought had been Sera, but he knew the Head Seraphim refused to listen to him on a good day, he’d doubted she’d listen now. He ruled Adam out by sheer principle that Adam never listened, and Lucifer didn’t want to have an argument with that bag of arrogant dicks again. He’d gotten enough of that to last him more than his lifetime. With the faintest tremble to his hands Lucifer pulled out his phone from his pocket and began to thumb through his contacts. He muttered a short, “Skip, skip, oh fuck no I am not calling Michael,” as he went through his various contacts in Heaven. He wasn’t even sure why he had half these numbers, he never talked to any of them really aside from Sera. He couldn’t remember when he put them in his phone, but he had an idea on who had. He stopped of a contact labeled ‘whiny bitchface’ and grimaced. He would be his best chance. He was the only one out of all his brothers that Lucifer bothered to actually talk to. Not that Lucifer actually had a choice in talking to this brother. He sighed heavily and hit the call button, and then tapped the speaker button and tossed the phone onto the coffee table. As it rang he summoned some cider and a glass and poured himself more than a healthy glass full. Lucifer knocked it back and waited for the phone to pick up. He wasn’t disappointed, even if it did take far too many rings for his comfort. “Lucy! Baby bro! You never call, you never write--how ya been?” Lucifer sighed heavily and grumbled, “Shut up Azreal,” as he massaged between his eyes. “Ahaha, make me, bitch.” “Try me, pissbaby,” Lucifer drawled back. Azreal burst out into laughter of the phone, complete mad cackling interspaced with the occasional wheeze and goose honking that Lucifer long expected.
“Ah, baby brother, you never cease to entertain!” Azreal cackled lightly. “But seriously, you don’t call Lucy. What’s up? Miss me already? It’s only been a few months!” Lucifer groaned and pressed his glass against his forehead as he closed his eyes. “I don’t miss you. I’d rather never see your face again if I’m going to be honest.” “You always were so serious about that, just like a heart attack, weren’t you brother?” “Azreal, can you listen please?” Lucifer couldn’t keep the faint whine from his voice as he just held the glass against his head and hoped the building migraine that always came from talking to Azreal of all angels would just stop brewing. For a long moment Azreal went silent on the other end of the line. His voice was much softer when he finally did speak up. “You are serious.” “Yes, Azreal. Can I speak, now?” Lucifer groaned heavily and bowed himself almost completely in half. He tapped the glass against his head and waited for Azreal to agree to let him talk. Once he heard Azreal agree, he sighed heavily. “I need you to set up a meet with Sera.” Azreal laughed, and Lucifer gnashed his teeth at the burning anger that swept through him. “I’m not joking, Azreal!” The laughter cut off. “Why didn’t you just call Sera, then? I’m sure she’d be sooooo happy to talk to you at the Embassy.” “Not here. Heaven.” “Haha! No.” Lucifer sucked in a breath at the sharp cut off. “You know you are not allowed back here, Lucy. You are bound there for the rest of eternity, a prison of your own making just as Father ordered.” Lucifer breathed deep to calm himself as he said, “I know.” “Then why bother even asking when you know the answer already?” Lucifer thought to Charlie, and her begging, pleading that he do this for her. He thought to her dream and the way she steadfastly defended it. He thought to the half-truths he had spoken when he promised to get her the meeting in to Heaven. He set the glass down on the table next to his phone. “It’s not for me, Azreal.”
“Well we can’t let a sinner step up in Heaven either!” Azreal pointed out. “It is not a sinner either.” “So one of the Hellborn?” Azreal questioned, skeptical. “The council won’t allow one of them in Heaven. You know the Ars Goetia would be turned away immediately, as well as any Incubus, Succubus, or Deep One. Imps would be pushing it, but I also know Hell’s hierarchy Lucy.” “It is not--” Lucifer grimaced and shook his head. “It’s for my daughter, Azreal.” “Say what now?” Lucifer didn’t bother to respond to Azreal being obtuse. The angel had been in his home, he’d seen his family portraits. Lucifer looked to one in this very room that depicted himself, Lilith, and his daughter when she’d been nothing more than a round cheeked tot. Azreal was being obtuse. “Morningstar answer me. What do you mean daughter?! You should not even--you cannot--we bound you to Hell alone to prevent this!” With a heavy sigh Lucifer rolled his eyes. “I have not slept with a human, Azreal.” “Why the fuck would you sleep with a Hellborn?” “I have not slept with a Hellborn, either,” Lucifer said shortly. It was a lie. He’d slept with plenty of Hellborn. He’s been alive for ten thousand plus years, he had time to develop his tastes. There was only one child that he’s ever had, however. Lucifer had been careful to ensure he’d created no other. “Then how?!” “I was married, Azreal,” Lucifer groaned. “I am married,” Lucifer corrected softly as he fiddled with the ring on his finger. Just because they agreed to a separation did not mean that they weren’t still tied by marriage. Lilith didn’t want a divorce, not if she’d lose all her power in Hell. There was a long, long moment of silence. Then, “Ew. With her? Father, Lucy, you could do so much better.”
“Azreal…” Lucifer growled, and on the phone Azreal sighed heavily. “Fine, fine. What does your daughter want? And what’s her name? And have you told Mikey?” “Fuck Michael and fuck you if you think I’m telling him shit,” Lucifer ground out. “O-kay then, still pissy about that, got it.” Azreal let out another tinny sigh. “Right, so why the meeting then Lucy?” “Charlie--” “You named your daughter Charlie? Oh you are so stupid!” “No, I named my daughter Charlotte, you ass! She chose Charlie!” “Ooh. So she’s a dyke.” “Azreal, so help me Father….” Lucifer let the threat hang, useless as it was as he stared at his phone with red eyes and hellfire licking at his forehead. “Got it, got it! I’ll be quiet now!” Lucifer waited, and when Azreal kept his word he laid out the situation as cautiously as he could. “She’s got this…Hotel. It’s a--a safe haven for sinner’s.” A soft lie, but Lucifer doubted Azreal would care about that. “Those who want to better themselves. To get out of their vices and sins.”
“…redemption,” Azreal said, words soft. “You are talking about redemption, aren’t you?” Lucifer breathed out, heavy and tired. “I know, Azreal. I know it is a foolish dream, and one not bound in reality, but….” “Why, then? Why are you still like this?!” Azreal demanded. “Lucy!” “…but the Hotel could be a safe haven for sinner’s who aren’t--I mean, Azreal, you know there is a disproportionate amount--” “Lucifer, little bro, she won’t care.” Azreal’s words were soft as he spoke them. They were the words of a long suffering older brother who has had to watch his younger brother falter, and falter, again and again. “She won’t care.” Lucifer sighed. “…I know.” “Then why?” “…Charlie asked,” Lucifer said. “She’s…never asked me for anything, really, and she’s stubborn. She won’t learn unless she sees it for herself.” “…on a scale of an attempted rebellion to just heartbreak how bad should I anticipate the fall out of this to be?” Azreal deadpanned. Lucifer could hear the gritted teeth on the other end. “I doubt Charlie would try to rebel,” Lucifer said dryly. “She’s got more smarts in her than to pull a stunt like her old man.” “…you and I both know that rebellion was Lilith’s plot, not yours.” Lucifer dragged his hands across his face and deigned not to respond to the accusation. Azreal wasn’t wrong either way, Lilith was the one who planned the original uprising. Lucifer hadn’t wanted to bother, really. He’d made himself a home here. He’d found peace with his Father’s decision, or at least he liked to believe he had. Sure he cried himself to sleep at night, sometimes. Sure he ended up in a panic at the mention of Heaven, most days, but he’d made his peace with it. He had.
Lucifer brushed the tears out of his eyes and cursed his inability to lie to himself. “Alright,” Azreal said softly. “Alright. I’ll talk to Sera and get your little girl a meeting.” “If she proves redemption is real, Azreal…” Lucifer breathed out slowly, “I need you to ensure the Hotel will remain protected, as well as any within it who honestly seek to better themselves, from any attempt at Extermination or retaliation from Heaven.” “Lucy…you know it’s not.” “But if it was--” “I will make sure there are protections in the agreement if it proves to be true,” Azreal agreed. “You know there will be a cost, though. A major one for an agreement like this.” Lucifer closed his eyes. “I know.” “You know what she will ask.” “I do.” “Are you prepared to pay it?” Lucifer swallowed heavily. He said, weakly, “I am.” Azreal went silent. Lucifer held his breath. Then, “I will text you the time and day once I have it,” and then Azreal hung up. Lucifer wrapped his arms around himself in the silence, followed shortly by his wings, as he took in a deep and shuddering breath. He did not cry. He held himself and told himself that this was for Charlie, and he would not cry. He wouldn’t. Lucifer hated that he could not lie to himself.

you’re catholic and pro-abortion? please tell me where in the bible does it say its ok to be pro-abortion??? why am I not surprised to see an anti-life male defend abortion just to avoid responsibility.......
Firstly, I fucking love it.  I so rarely get attacked for my faith that it’s a-mazing that some idiot thinks to do so.  I actually get to use my Bible for this one!
Numbers 5:20-22, 27-28, “God performs abortions”
(20) But if you have gone astray while married to your husband and you have made yourself impure by having sexual relations with a man other than your husband”— (21) here the priest is to put the woman under this curse—“may the LORD cause you to become a curse among your people when he makes your womb miscarry and your abdomen swell. (22) May this water that brings a curse enter your body so that your abdomen swells or your womb miscarries.” “ ‘Then the woman is to say, “Amen. So be it.”
(27)If she has made herself impure and been unfaithful to her husband, this will be the result: When she is made to drink the water that brings a curse and causes bitter suffering, it will enter her, her abdomen will swell and her womb will miscarry, and she will become a curse. (28) If, however, the woman has not made herself impure, but is clean, she will be cleared of guilt and will be able to have children.
Exodus 21:22-25 “Killing an unborn is not the same as killing a person, and the punishment is akin to property damage”
(22) If men strive, and hurt a woman with child, so that her fruit depart from her, and yet no mischief follow: he shall be surely punished, according as the woman's husband will lay upon him; and he shall pay as the judges determine. (23)And if any mischief follow, then thou shalt give life for life, (24) Eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot, (25) Burning for burning, wound for wound, stripe for stripe.
Psalm 33:6 “Life begins at first breath”
By the word of the LORD the heavens were made, And by the breath of His mouth all their host.
Genesis 2:7 “Life begins at breath, Vol 2.”
And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.
Isaiah 42:5 “Vol 3.”
Thus says God, the Lord, who created the heavens and stretched them out, who spread out the earth and what comes from it, who gives breath to the people on it and spirit to those who walk in it:
Job 34: 14-15 “God’s breath is what separates us from dust, a.k.a. Vol 4″
(14) If he should set his heart to it and gather to himself his spirit and his breath, (15) all flesh would perish together, and man would return to dust.
Job 33:4 “Vol 5″
The spirit of God has made me, and the breath of the Almighty gives me life.
In the Bible, you are not a person until you’re halfway outside of your mother.  Then you’re only partially a person until you’re all the way out
You might notice that these are all old-testament quotes. Which is because the New Testament, you know,
The New and Everlasting Covenant, which shall be shed for You and for All so that sin may be forgiven
Doesn’t really talk about abortion or life in the same way, and to the extent that it does the different apostles step on each other all the fucking time.
It would be better for the unholy to never have been born (Matthew 26:24)
Jesus Christ was a “thing” until He was born, as per Gabriel’s words (Luke 1:35)
John the Baptist being special explicitly because God made him Holy while a fetus (Luke 1:15).  That word simultaneously means “after birth” and also “third trimester”, because ancient languages were Like That.
The Apostles’ Creed (4th Century) and Didache (Which I can promise that you haven’t read) expand more considerations to the young, and to the unborn to varying degrees.
“How can you possibly be pro-abortion and Catholic at the same time!?” is a reflection on how little of the Bible you’ve read.  It’s a reflection on your own ignorance in regards to your own religious teachings and the writings of God Himself.
But nah.  You didn’t want to actually figure out what the religious underpinnings of my belief were.  You’ve a log in your eye, and you keep it there with pride.
Secondly, “to avoid responsibility” is a funny phrase to use to describe someone who has never pushed anyone to ever get an abortion in my personal life and is ecstatic at the potential chance to be a father.  “Avoiding responsibility” is just...that’s now how I work.

I honestly told myself I wasn’t going to write another part today, but I can’t stay away from this story so here’s another Just for Tonight drabble.
Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, Part 4:
22 Years before Just for Tonight
Gabriel watched Nino cower under the short awning of Adrien’s playhouse as the toddler ran around the yard, chasing bubbles popping out of a small machine.
“You’re being harsh,” Adele said, coming up behind her husband. “He’s going to be sick if you make him stay out in the sun much longer. He’s just a baby vamp, Gabriel.”
“He’s got enough shade not to burn. He’ll be weak but I’m sure he’ll find the motivation to keep going. He was created to watch Adrien and that’s what he’s doing,” Gabriel replied, catching Adele’s reflection in the window.
“We have plenty of people who can watch Adrien during the day. You’re punishing him. Why?”
“Apparently he’s been spending his nights in Felix’s room.”
Adele blinked. “Oh. Well. I don’t suppose there’s anything wrong with that, is there?”
Gabriel turned to her. “You can’t be serious.”
“And if I am?” she challenged. “Why shouldn’t Felix have a friend?”
“He can have all the friends he wants, just not the one vampire I turned to be by his brother’s side.”
“Has Nino been neglecting his duty to Adrien?”
Gabriel frowned. “Not that I’m aware of. Pierce has been keeping an eye on it and Nino goes to Felix’s room every night after Adrien has been settled in.”
“I see.”
“Still.”
“Yes?” Adele smirked.
“It isn’t right. I won’t allow it.”
“Just so I understand, dear, is it their friendship you won’t allow or something more? I would like to remind you that this is the first person I’ve known for Felix to willingly interact with.”
Gabriel glanced around the empty room. “And if he is more than a friend?”
“Would you deny your son love for ridiculous antiquated politics?” Adele pressed. “He won’t be king. What could it hurt?”
The king hung his head. “I had them bonded,” he muttered.
Adele’s eyes sharpened. “You said you wouldn’t.”
“I did what I thought was best.” He stiffened his spine. “And I still believe I did what was right.”
“Gabriel.”
“Adele, it’s done. There’s nothing that can change that.” Gabriel turned to see Adrien tugging on Nino’s arm and the older vampire staying firmly crouched in the shadow of the playhouse, shaking his head. “Even if I allow whatever is going on between them to continue, Nino belongs to Adrien. He will never be able to leave his side. Wouldn’t it be better to curb,” he paused, grimacing, “any possibilities between them now?”
“I could slap you,” Adele murmured. “I’m tempted to.”
“That wouldn’t be wise. You would be punished.”
“I’ve never been known for my wisdom,” she snapped. “Gabriel, look what you’ve done to your sons.”
“Nothing has happened. I will tell Felix he is not to spend time with Nino. That will be it.”
Adele crossed her arms. “That easy, is it?”
“Yes,” he nodded.
“So where are you sending Felix off to then?”
Gabriel’s brows knitted together. “Why would I send him anywhere?”
“Well, Adrien has to stay here and Nino has to stay with Adrien. Did you have another plan on keeping Felix and Nino apart for the next few decades?”
Gabriel floundered and Adele pressed on, stepping into his space.
“Have you even spoken to Felix about the nature of their relationship?”
“No, but--”
“But I’m sure you’ve spoken to Nino, haven’t you? I feel certain you became your calm and cool self and spoke down to him until he felt worthless and then threatened him with some kind of torture you thought up on a whim to be the most frightening. So even if Felix says they are only friends and he enjoys having someone to talk to, you have most likely terrified that poor hunter into avoiding him at all costs. Are you proud of yourself, your majesty?” Adele poked a finger into his chest, eyes blazing. “Fix this, Gabriel. For your son’s sake.”
“You will not speak to me like this,” he glowered.
“I will and you’ll listen because you know I’m right,” she huffed. “Now, I’m going to bring my son inside for his bath and let that poor boy take a break and try to gather his energy back after you forced him to be outside during the day.” She gave him a challenging look but Gabriel only nodded.
“As you wish,” he murmured.
“And speak to Felix. Today.”
__________________________________
Gabriel nodded to the guard outside the library as he stepped inside. Felix was at the table, a stack of books beside him and one open in front of him. His head was bowed as he furiously scribbled in a notebook, a cup of coffee cooling to the side.
“I would like to speak to you if you have a moment,” Gabriel said, moving towards the table.
Felix slapped the book and notebook closed and looked up at his father with a blank expression. “Yes?”
“What are you working on?”
Felix moved his arm over the cover of the book. “Is that what you came here to speak with me about, Father?”
Gabriel eyed the stack of books on the table. “Are you studying magic?”
“Reading about it. I’ve read most of the books in here. You know that. What did you need?”
Gabriel shifted uneasily and then cleared his throat, straightening. “I would like to know the nature of your relationship with the turned hunter.”
“He has interesting stories and I was curious. I’ve never met a hunter before so the first-hand knowledge was nice.”
“Was he sleeping in your room?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Felix picked up his coffee and slowly took a sip.
“Felix?”
“Yes, Father?”
Gabriel opened his mouth and then shut it, rethinking his words. “Do you consider him a friend?”
Felix looked up at him. “Is it safe to admit that?”
“I’m not a monster.”
The younger man took another slow sip of coffee.
Gabriel growled under his breath. “I will not ask the details of your...friendship as long as those details stay behind your door. You must realize that whatever this is can’t last. He is bonded to Adrien.”
“I’m well aware of that, Father.”
“Perhaps I should’ve let you go to Italy when my father wanted to send you. You may have been happier.”
“Instead you kept me here. Will that be all?”
“Yes, I suppose for now, it will be,” he frowned. “You’ve gotten new clothes.”
“Not new,” Felix corrected. “I’m just trying something different with clothes I already owned.”
“The turtleneck and vest are a bit much with the tie.”
“I’ll take your opinion with the due consideration it deserves.”
“Felix,” Gabriel warned.
Felix stood and began to gather the books from the table. “I think I’ll turn in early. I’m rather tired.”
“It’s still daylight.”
“A nap then.”
Gabriel watched his son balance the stack of books and back into the door, nudging it open to be caught by the guard outside. He looked towards the large library windows to see that Adele had already gathered Adrien and Nino was no longer hiding in the playhouse.
__________________________________
Nino was curled on his side, shivering under the thin blanket he had been given. He heard the door to his small room open but didn’t turn around. His last visitor had been his sire, the King of France, and had successfully scared him into never wanting to leave Adrien’s side for more than a few designated hours so he wasn’t keen on knowing who was visiting him currently.
“Is it okay if I stay with you for a bit?” Felix asked, standing in the doorway.
Nino rolled over warily. “I’m not supposed to talk to you.”
“I know,” he nodded. “But my father is also under a ‘what he doesn’t see, he’ll pretend he doesn’t know’ policy at the moment, it seems.” He frowned, holding a book and notebook to his chest. “But if you would rather I stay away, I understand.”
Nino sat up, glancing around the small room. “I don’t really have much here.”
“I’m not here for the amenities,” Felix shrugged, pulling the door closed behind him. “But we can go to my room if you would be more comfortable.”
The other man worried his bottom lip. “He said he would cut me open and make me stay awake and watch as he pulled different pieces out of me if I continued to spend time with you.”
“Fuck,” Felix breathed. “Asshole, shit-brained, power-mad dick.”
Nino blinked in surprise. “Wow, tell me how you really feel.”
Felix clenched his jaw, lifting the books in his arms a bit. “I’m going to fix it.”
“What?”
“The blood bond. I’m going to figure out how to break it so you can go live whatever life you want away from here.”
“Is that even possible?”
Felix frowned. “I’m not sure yet, but I’m working on it.”
“I won’t have anywhere to go.”
“We’ll figure something out.”
Nino tried not to smile. “We will?”
Felix sat down on the edge of the bed and set his books on the floor, grabbing the notebook off the top and opening it in his lap. He took Nino’s hand in his but didn’t meet his eyes. “Yeah, we will.”

Vision and the Price of Repeating the Past
Disclaimer: This post has spoilers for the recent Vision solo series, won’t make much sense if you haven’t read said series, and gives away the ending. If you haven’t read it, you should get on that. Now onto the 2 A.M. meta...
Tom King and Gabriel Hernandez Walta’s Vision series is about a lot of things. It's about the constraints of Suburbia, the pain of being Other in that environment, and the sacrifices of parents to make that life for their children. But it's also about repeating the past, and by extension, it's a metacommentary on being stuck in the superhero loop. There are plenty of stories about what it means to be a superhero in the archetypal sense, what it means to be a superhero in the broader culture, but Vision stays closer to home, to what it means to be a superhero in cyclical Big Two comic books.
There is a saying about superheroes, that they always return to the status quo. This means Steve Rogers can be a werewolf one month and then go back to being just Captain America the next, his fundamental nature unchanged. It also means characters tend to repeat the same kind of stories. No matter how far they go, they can't escape their origin stories. King shines a different light on this truism of superhero comics by framing it as a form of repetition compulsion. He turns it into a coping mechanism for Vision's unprocessed trauma. Vision returns to an old story, but something feels sinister about it this time.
Vision starts with its title character having recreated a very specific scenario: that of Vision & the Scarlet Witch volume 2. That of a wife and two kids in East Coast Suburbia. This is the site of Vision's trauma, both as a person and a character. The story goes like this: Vision and Wanda had two kids. They lived in Suburban New Jersey. Everyone was very happy. Except for Marvel writer John Byrne who hated Vision, so he deconstructed Vision, literally and figuratively, and got rid of the kids. Then Vision's original creator Roy Thomas showed up to do damage control, but it was Too Little Too Late. Then Vision got stuck in a loop of "idk, maybe this?" where writers weren't sure what to do with him so they made him a detective or killed him off or had him be weirdly self-confident for no reason. He was still technically the same character -- even Byrne's all-encompassing deconstruction couldn't fight the power of the status quo -- but he was never really the same.
So why go back to the situation that created all that trauma and inadvertently caused Times He Was a Detective? Well, because people are weird, and no matter what Quicksilver thinks, Vision is a person.
It would be easy to say Vision just wants to go back to the point where he was happiest, but there is something darker underlying the decision to create a new family with a new Wanda and new twins: Vision wants to reshape the origin of his trauma into something he can control, and by controlling it, prove his power over said trauma. This is repetition compulsion. It's an attempt to find safety and power in the very place that made him feel unsafe and powerless, but like I said the last time I talked in depth about this book, "healing doesn’t come from returning to a poisoned well and repeating the past will only hurt you more."
And all of this does hurt Vision more. It goes horribly wrong. His old life comes barging in in the form of Simon Williams' brother Eric and the end result is disaster. The attempts to cover up that disaster by Vision's wife Virginia only make things worse and worse. She and Vision are both invested in maintaining a facade of normality and happiness, and the decisions they make in order to do that cause their problems to metastasize. There are a lot of messages and lessons you can take from Vision, but I think this is the best one: Trying to cover up or deny your problems only makes them grow. They become more and more unruly, requiring more and more effort to keep them hidden, until they finally explode.
Deal with your shit or it will deal with you. Mafia style.
The price of Vision's attempt to recreate the past is the life of his wife and son. It would have meant consequences for Vision too, if Virginia and Wanda hadn't protected him from his choices. The price of their decisions is that Vision ends up right back where he started: making a new NEW wife.

Vision Vol. 3 #12 by Tom King & Gabriel Hernandez Walta
Like much of this book, the ending is creepy. It proves Vision didn't really learn anything from this horrific experience, but that isn't a surprise. Vision says he doesn't want to learn anything from it, and Virginia and Wanda's love for him protects him from having to.
Tumblr media
Wanda: Vision, you have to know. We – you and I, we’re different than all of them. I know you. You know me. Only we understand that. Everyone – they just stay the same. But we – we are constantly finding the new. We are forever being redone. Reborn. Redeemed, V. But this. If you do this – Agatha has tasted the flower. She’s seen what’s coming. This – You kill him, you can’t come back. You’ll be like everyone else. You’ll just get worse. Everything will just get worse.
Vision: I’m so sorry, Wanda. I do not think that you understand. That you ever understood. I want to be like everyone else.
Vision Vol. 3 #11 by Tom King & Gabriel Hernandez Walta
As perceptive as Wanda is, she's projecting here. We all see ourselves when we look out at the world -- how can we not? -- and Wanda is seeing herself in Vision. She's trying to convince Vision that he is as fluid in nature as she is, but Vizh is made of more rigid stuff. He may have been a detective for a while, but he didn’t go the Wanda Maximoff School of Never Being the Same Character Twice. He is a Virgo, after all.
Part of the reason characters always return to the status quo is that that's how fans want them, but no one wanted Vision to return to Vision & the Scarlet Witch volume 2 sans Scarlet Witch... except for Vision. Vision can't have Wanda anymore. She is long gone, done moved on. But he'll settle for someone like her. He'll definitely settle for someone who is both like her and like him.
[This is the part where I digress to talk about Virginia and the fact that she has Wanda's brain patterns. Here's the thing: I didn't like the idea of Wanda giving Vision a copy of her brain so that he could make a person out of it, any person, but especially a lover. Now that the book is over and I've had some time to think about it though, I feel differently. I think the key to understanding Wanda's thought process here is realizing a few things:
Wanda is one of the few people who can fully appreciate the Simon/Vision divide. She knows both of them intimately and understands they are not the same person. Therefore, she knows that whoever Vision makes with her brain patterns will not be her either. The same way that liking chess and jazz music doesn't make Vision Simon, Virginia may like riding horses and listening to Shukar Collective, but that doesn't make her Wanda.
Wanda knows Vision has trouble connecting with others, and having someone who is both like him and like her would make that easier.
Simon refused to offer up his brain patterns to fix Vision after he was dismantled, and that was A Big Deal to Wanda.
Wanda believes in Vision's fundamental goodness and knows he understands what it's like to be a synthetic human better than anyone.
Also, she, like, loves him. That's a thing too.
So it makes sense that she would trust him with this, but I think she's missing how damaged his trauma and the decision to erase his previous feelings, which she couldn't have predicted when she copied her brain, have left him. Because Vision is not a good husband to Virginia, and that's a big part of why everything goes so wrong.
/digression]
Returning to Vision's previous situation in a way he wants but the audience doesn't helps highlight how uncomfortable and unnatural this return to the status quo really is. Because you can go back, but it's not the same. That's not Wanda, and this isn't a happy scenario. Vision must, on some level, know it's not a happy scenario, but the pain of the past is, at least, familiar. You know what you're getting.
Not moving on is cowardice, but it's also essential to superhero comics. That tension comes out in Wanda's confrontation with Vision. We – you and I, we’re different than all of them. /  I do not think that you understand. That you ever understood. I want to be like everyone else.
I have a theory that superheroes exist on a continuum between specificity and fluidity. On the one end, you have characters who tell the same story over and over again. Those characters have a clear-cut, obvious, simple premise. They are easy to explain, but they are limited. On the other end, you have someone like Wanda, whose nature is constantly in flux, who sort of has a status quo but not in the same way as the others, who is hard to pin down and with whom you can tell a myriad of different stories.
The middle point is the sweet spot. It's the Batman spot. It's the place where you can tell the maximum number of stories and still have the character be recognizably themselves. That's (a big part of) why Batman is the world's biggest superhero. And also because Batman has Catwoman and Catwoman is the fucking best.
What the ending of Vision represents is the power of The Loop and the tendency to get stuck in one story and never get out. But this is superhero comics where anything can happen and Magneto once fell in love with a robot version of Wanda. The ending from this one creative team won't necessarily reverberate forever and ever, amen. And King has read enough comics to know that, in the context of the broader universe and Vision's history as a whole, this ending doesn't mean what it means within his individual story. But as a commentary on The Loop? It's eerie perfection.

KESHA FT. BIG FREEDIA - RAISING HELL
[6.38]
Kesha with Big Freedia Energy
Leah Isobel: Kesha has been saddled with one of the heaviest narratives of 2010s pop music, which combines uneasily with her career-long interest in more grounded country and rock signifiers. Now when she works with those impulses, as she did on Rainbow, the effect is one of refutation; Animal becomes an outlier that she made against her will, one that doesn't represent the Real Kesha. To work her way back to the party music that made her reputation, she has to adapt it to the new narrative frame that surrounds everything she does. If she's having fun, she's having fun in spite of what she experienced; partying is no longer an end into itself, but an escape from something else. Hence, "Raising Hell" deploys one of the hackiest pop tropes - gospel choirs used as a shortcut for sincere emotion - married to a pretty decent Big Freedia drop. It's not awful, but I miss the actual, honest-to-god trashiness that she made her stock in trade. In 2019, I guess I'm the only one. [6]
Thomas Inskeep: Finally, an uptempo Kesha record that a) isn't touched by the evil Dr. Luke, and b) doesn't sound like the result of a three-day vodka-and-Red Bull bender, and c) is actually fun. I'm not a fan of the EDM horns in the chorus, but apart from those, this works. I'm a bigger fan of Big Freedia in theory than practice, and accordingly prefer her in small doses; she's quite effective here as a kind of DJ Khaled-esque hype-person. And Kesha sounds free and happy, which makes me happy. [7]
Kayla Beardslee: I'm glad Kesha got her balls back and all, but I'm not enthused that that means a return to honking 2012 pop-drops. I will admit, though -- the combined Kesha/Freedia "drop it down low" hook grows on me with every listen. The rest of the song is fine: it invites singing along and is fun in a hedonistic Ke$ha way, but it's also very, very noisy (lots of erratic shouts and claps in the background that, to me, lean more messy than energetic). My favorite part is the final chorus ("Can I get an amen"), which is a pleasantly melodic contrast to the rest of the track, a close second being the thrilling "aaugh!" Kesha does right before the second chorus. [6]
Alex Clifton: High Road appears to take the party-all-day spirit from Kesha's earlier work but mixed with the rawer, more down-to-earth material from Rainbow. In theory this is a dream come true, and there's so much about "Raising Hell" that makes it a joy to experience. The post-chorus is godawful, though. Tonally it doesn't fit and stalls the song from its natural flow. I'm also longing for the day that Big Freedia gets the feature she deserves: her appearance is mostly limited to drop-it-drop-it-drop-it-drop-it which is delivered well but also literally one-note. Kesha's trying to have it all ways she can--country and gospel and dance and bounce--which, as someone who likes a good genreproof song, I really respect. Unfortunately the whole package doesn't come together as fully as it could. [6]
Stephen Eisermann: "The best possible Andy Grammer single" is not what Kesha and Big Freedia should be collaborating on. This is a waste of time and talent and no amount of conviction from either participant can convince me otherwise. [4]
Alfred Soto: This sounds sacrilegious: instead of defiling a religion, it defiles my idea of Kesha. After proving herself up to thumbing her nose at any genre she experimented with, she acquiesces to gospel cliches. She's earned the right to want salvation in them, lord knows, but she needn't sound as if Julia Michaels was her pastor. [4]
Josh Buck: How do you have a hook like "I don't wanna go to heaven without raising hell" and video centered around prosperity gospel preachers and NOT make it a country song?? At this point, Kesha has proven that she can tackle a variety of genres, but this bounce effort just feels scattered instead of celebratory. I realize this a loaded statement and not at all meant to be a defense or endorsement of the man, but judging by Kim Petras' endless recent string of bangers, Dr. Luke may have been an irreplaceable ingredient in Kesha's more crowd pleasing, debauched pop efforts. In recent years, she's sound much stronger on her Struts and Eagles of Death Metal rock cuts, and i'd love to see her spend more time in that arena. This one reminds me a bit of the final album by The Donnas in terms of we-might-be-too-old-for-this vibes. [3]
Katherine St Asaph: The narrative, inevitable and damning, around Kesha was that in severing her ties to Dr. Luke, she lost her source of a signature sound. Rainbow, with its grabs at musical styles and Kesha's required-for-optics but personality-dampening show of penitence, didn't do much to dislodge it. Which is why "Raising Hell" is such a triumph: it's evidence that she was the source of her signature sound. The song feels massive; if sound alone determines a hit, this would be No. 1 everywhere. The hook is recognizably hers: a melody that's kin to "We R Who We R" and also to hymns. The drops r what they r; the interpolations are canny and nostalgia: an interlude of "My Neck, My Back" filtered through "Hollaback Girl," an interlude of preaching filtered through Prince. Freedia is incapable of sounding like she's phoning it in even when she is (I'm sure she'll do a lot of that in the next few years), and unlike Iggy Pop or the Eagles of Death Metal, she's an actually exciting guest pick, rather than one mostly exciting on paper to boomers. And throughout, Kesha recaptures the anarchic glee that made her career. [8]
Jonathan Bogart: Maybe it was my naïveté in 2010 that made her sound so recklessly out of step with the rest of pop; but her post-Luke music, however much better it has been for her soul, still sounds faintly like capitulation. The secular-gospel structure and chantalong melody followed by jump around breakdowns sound like every pseudo-celebration on the market: the saving grace is Freedia's booming authoritativeness (surely the angel Gabriel, when he tells the roll up yonder to drop it down low, sounds like her) and Kesha's impish use of language, dancing on the borders between sacrilege and piety, hooks it up to the great stream of American song, where there is no Sunday morning without a Saturday night. [8]
Kylo Nocom: Of all things, this reminds me of Vacation Bible School theme songs and the "Cheerleader" remix. I have scored this accordingly. [7]
Michael Hong: The bombast of early 2010s Ke$ha meets the soulful Kesha of Rainbow racing down that same road to self-empowerment. Ke$ha's talk-singing, a choir that makes a line like "bitch, I'm blessed" all the more enjoyable, drops mixed with the gospel influences, and Big Freedia's bounce make for a hell of a maximalist fantasy. [7]
Jackie Powell: When "Raising Hell" begins, it fools the listener. When the piano chords and Kesha's introductory vocalization grace my ears during the song's first five seconds, I'm convinced that a power ballad or at best a mid-tempo track is in store. But Kesha quickly changes direction. An explosion of camp from collaborator Big Freedia, a blaring saxophone in the chorus, the return of talk-singing in the verses and an epic build in the pre-chorus: it sounds very familiar. That's what Kesha wants. She wants us to feel like we are once again at a 21-century hoedown. (But without Pitbull this time.) On this track, Kesha proves that both she and her fans can be "animals" while simultaneously being people with "fantastic souls", which might have been something missing from the pre-Rainbow eras. Here, however, Kesha desires fun and a rebellion that are a rejection of evil behavior and suffocating authority figures. She's not just sticking it to the man without a purpose. That's the difference between Kesha of 2019 and Ke$ha of 2009. "Kesha got her balls back and they're bigger than ever," she said in the album trailer for High Road. But I don't agree with that. She's had them since her inception. Her evolution has been honest, which is something that not all artists can say. [7]
Isabel Cole: MY! GIRL! Having proven herself an actual musician to every idiot man in the country, Kesha (perhaps sick of being so serious) gleefully returns to her favorite stomping ground of, well, glee. Raising Hell makes text what has always been the implicit mission of the Kesha project: a commitment to the fundamental sacredness of joy. It's hard to imagine a more succinct encapsulation of her ethos than "I'm all fucked up in my Sunday best / no walk of shame cuz I love this dress": it's not that she takes no pleasure in the transgression of elevating ass-shaking to the level of the divine, but it's a gentle mischief born of the deep belief in the holiness of enjoying our corporeal gifts while we still can. Feeling good is a form of worship, and a killer beat is no less legitimate an access point than a hymn. When she combines markers of religiosity with artifacts of base delights (my favorite is "Solo cup full of holy spirits," although I also adore the the vulgarity of "bounce it up and down where the good Lord split it"), the point is not to revel in contradiction but to toast to the fact that there is no contradiction; and when she opens her scope in the coda, dedicating her preaching or perhaps this round of shots to the misfits of creation, there's a (frankly Piscean) generosity to it. Also, (1) it slaps (2) biiiiiiiiiiiiiitch I'm blessed (3) her voice sounds just wonderful, as dextrous with an implicit smirk as ever and with a thrilling power on the places she gets to soar; I love the bit of grit we get in the chorus, like she's singing this after a night out (4) it FUCKING slaps (5) "I'm still here still, still bringing it to ya": ten years since TiK ToK this month, and the party still don't start till she walks in. No read more because I'm on mobile and my fucks ran out 3 hours ago.
Gather ‘round children. I have a story to tell about the shitshown that has been on my Punta Cana trip thus far (less than 8 hours).
Got to the airport in the US no problem. It’s a big travel day so we didn’t have to take our shoes off or our electronics out in security. My sister evidently got her bottle of mace through they were so lax. There was a good good doggo sniffing bags tho. He worked so hard.
Next, the plane. I slept a lot, got through a third of the first of one of my books I brought. I sat next to a lady that was a nervous flyer, so I did my best to be nonchalant to calm her.
Finally, we land. I was a pretty quick flight when you compare it to going to China so it seemed like nothing. This is when the trouble starts….
They must have had a short luggage pickup line because they had a lot of guys who worked at the airport pick up the bags and just set them around… and when you went to go grab your bag they would try to get you to pay to use their trolley (they didn’t say this up front, but I’ve travelled enough to know). Myself and the daughter from the other family grabbed all the bags while the rest of the chucklefucks shopped in the duty free shop for booze. They wouldn’t let us take the bag out of that area if they weren't ours. We waiting for a HALF HOUR for the assholes to come claim their bags. The lady who was actually checking passports LEFT because they were taking so long. (FYI, our party is nine people. Imagine two girls in a seat of suitcases for a half hour) My dad actually got pissed at ME when I got frustrated they were taking so long. (All everyone else wants to do on this trip is get blackout wasted every day sooooo booze come first always)
Dad: “WELL what do you want me to do????”
Me: “I want you assholes to come get your bags since we’ve been standing here waiting for you for HOW LONG??”
Dad: “Well we’re finishing up in the duty free store. I don’t know what you want us to do. We’re checking out now.”
Me: “It would have been nice if we could have gotten our bags BEFORE you guys decided alcohol was the most important thing. You know, get our bags, THEN go to duty free, like I SAID.”
He threw up his hands and walked away. But this is just the beginning dea people.
I had nothing to do with booking this trip. It’s something I had no interest in doing and yet here we are because it’s a “family” trip. Anyway, my dad and the mother of the other family that came with us booked cars for us WEEKS in advance. They got two minivans, one for each family. Spoiler alert: they didn’t have the cars. Apparently, their “system was down” so despite us reserving those cars they couldn’t see it and thus gave away the cars we were supposed to use. We spent AN HOUR trying to get shit sorted out. First, they wanted to give us a 12 person van and a car, upcharge us on them AND refused to give us a quote until we gave them our credit card. Wtf???
Needless to say, we went to another place. We rented a 12 person van, got a quote and went out to wait FOR ANOTHER HOUR. Eventually a few representatives came to meet us which introduces us to the shining angel of this story (no pun indened), Gabriel. He saved us sooooo many times. My family is taking him out to dinner currently. But even Gabriel can’t save everything.
We asked the reps SIX TIMES if all of use and our luggage would all fit in the van. They told us yes SIX TIMES. I think you can guess how that went. The “12 person” van could 100% fit 12 people…. If they had no luggage. With luggage we literally had no leg room with how close the seats had to be. I’m talking sitting cross-legged on the seats. And holding our carry-ons in our laps. For obvious reasons this didn’t work for us. May I remind you, we have been at this airport for 2.5 hours. It’s approaching 5 o’clock and we haven’t eaten since breakfast.
So our final HOUR at the airport is spent making a deal with the people that run the car service. One guy kept saying, “It’s not the van that’s the problem, it’s the luggage. If it was just you guys there would be no problem.”
.
.
.
WE ARE AT AN AIRPORT.
[Note: at this point all the daughters are in the van and I say, “Hey, should we turn the van off? The AC is on and the gas gauge looks a little low.”
“Nah, this isn’t our car and we’re not paying for the gas.” This will be important later]
Next, we FINALLY make a deal, since they screwed us over with the vans they will bring another van out just for our luggage. One of our group will ride in there with that. THEN there is a whole argument because they won’t accept a credit card unless we drive 30 mins out of our way to go to their offices. They want us to pay upward of $1000 in pesos/cash. Eventually EVENTUALLY, we leave.
We drive 10 mins from the airport and the low gas light comes on. Remember what I mentioned before? Yeah. We call Gabriel (in the other car), the two cars pull over to the side of the road and you know what Gabrial says???
“Oh shit.”
He tells us we should turn back but my dad (driving) insists they can make it to a rest stop. We make it…. With 5km of gas left in the tank.
This whole time, we’re trying to get in contact with the owner of the AirBNB we rented to let her know we were coming. We learn not long after we get to the resort her property is on that the phone number she gave us was disconnected. We tried desperately to contact her because we don’t have the keys???
Eventually we get to the resort and while checking in they tell our family that we must pay EXTRA for the resort amenities. Cue another HOUR of arguing because and extra $600 per family??? Yeah, no. Our BNB host was supposed to have already paid for that. The kids, minus me, start to do shots in the parking lot.
Finally that gets ‘solved’ and we start to drive to the lot. We have to turn around at one point because the leading car went the wrong way. Eventually I just ripped the map away and guided us, 100% correct may I say, to the right house.
We have a maid??? Which I feel super uncomfortable with. She doesn’t speak English but she was still so so so sweet. I think the shitshow is almost over. There was a kitty on our deck so I took quite time to just pet him. I love him.
Next, apparently the guy who drove Gabriel and the father from the other family was demanding more money for “wasting so much of his time.” Gabriel told him no because that wasn’t in the deal. The guy drove off and left Gabriel. Gabriel insisted he could have his cousin come pick him up but we told him to wait and we’d take him out to dinner.
There was one thing I specified needing this trip; reliable WiFi. I only work part time and thus, do not actually get vacation hours. The only way I could come on this trip was with the promise I’d be available for meetings over the phone and to answer emails. Guess what didn’t work at first and works slow as balls when I’m the only one here??? THE WIFI. Again, Gabriel was our savior because his actually job is installing illegal internet so he saved our bacon.
So yeah, that was my first 5-6 hours in the Dominican Republic. I’m going to be looking at the prices for early flights home… just in case.

We form the jury ranking (but this one is for the moment suspended as experimentation). And we count now the ranking of minutes of views of our weekly playlist of the previous week. The Gay Music Chart is the addition of the five charts. In case of equality, the number of votes and the dates of votes will count.
7 ) The votes will close on Thursday, 8 PM, European time.
